The Catgirl Critics’ Media Mewsings for December, 2007!

Mike (their producer):

The catgirls have reconvened today on the lanai at Yvonne’s Catgirl Island beach house, taking time from their busy days on the beach to sip tasty cran-apple nummy berry drinks and discuss science fiction, fantasy & horror movies, TV, comic books, anime, toys & stuff.

For those of y’all joining today us for the first time, allow me to introduce those four catgirls Mary Nyan, Yvonne, Jeannie, and Elizabeth!

Aside from her duties as a Miko at the shrine, Myayr’s many hobbies include hula, surfing, cricket, aerial dancing, gymnastics and fishing. She likes to cosplay at conventions & fairs, and collects drumsticks & guitar picks at the hard rock & heavy metal concerts she attends.

When she isn’t busy with her yacht charters, Vonny’s hobbies include golf, taiko drumming, sailing, beach volleyball, cliff diving, ice skating, roller blading, rock climbing, card & board games and painting miniatures. Her worldy musical tastes include Celtic, Indian and J-pop.

Miss Tales of Catgirl island 2007, Jenjen is into belly dancing, yoga, kyu-do, scuba diving, soccer, surfing, cycling and running when she is not modeling for a living. She also enjoys Japanese anime & manga, role play games, and science fiction & fantasy books & movies.

When she and Myayr aren’t busy greeting folks at the shrine, among Lizzy’s purr-suits are salsa dance, tai chi, sporting clays, tennis, flying stunt kites, parkour, lomi lomi, gardening and free diving. She occasionally plays electronic games, and collects comic books & toys.

Here they are, so let’s start a holiday edition of The Mew!

Mary Nyan:

Hello everyone!

Yvonne:

Namaste, nya!

Jeannie:

Aloha Y’all!

Elizabeth:

Hi hi! Welcome back!

Mike:

So Did y’all have a pleasant Thanksgiving?

(All four catgirls in unison)

Hai!

Yvonne:

We had lots to eat, nya!

Jeannie:

Mike, I heard you recently interviewed Corrine Elizabeth Melepomene Chattan, of Clan of the Cats, for Jamie Robertson’s newest Clan of the Cats Mel e-book!

Mike:

Yep. She’s rather peculiar about certain things, but I assured her the interview was sincere & not a hatchet job. She insisted I use the pen name Bob, though. Beats me, but I got in 25 questions and she was in a pleasant, chatty mood.

Elizabeth:

You think Corrine’s hot, don’t you? hee hee!

Mike:

Well kinda… so, um… what’s the first topic for this month. Whatcha think Myayr?

Mary Nyan:

I think you’re trying to purr-suade us to dodge that Melepomene topic! That aside-

What We’re Watching Weekly!

Yvonne:

We should discuss our current favorite TV shows, nya!

Jeannie:

I like Namaste Yoga and Shimmy on Fit TV! I would like to be on those shows.

Yvonne:

um-

Mary Nyan:

Did you see the numciously huge gar they caught on that National Geographic special?

Yvonne:

nya…

Elizabeth:

Oh I saw it- that fish was huge! MM-mm! Oh, she meant we should discuss current science fiction / fantasy genre TV shows!

Yvonne:

Hai! Otherwise I would have said The Golf Channel, nya!

Jeannie:

Oh I’m sorry… say… I think this has happened before!

Mary Nyan:

Really? Maybe… maybe we’re in a time loop! Oh, just kidding! Actually, Doctor Who is still my current favorite such genre show.

Elizabeth:

That’s a good show. I like the new season of Legion of Super Heroes!

Yvonne:

What about you Mike, nya?

Mike:

Yeah… Doctor Who for sure… and the re-mastered Star Trek is still a treat to watch, though heavily edited it may be!

Mary Nyan:

I’d like to cut up that big gar into a sushi platter!

Yvonne:

NOW I’M HUNGRY, NYA!

Mike:

Oh all right… (goes to get them a snack tray)

(All four catgirls in unison)

THANK YOU MIKE!

Elizabeth:

Nummy fish! So… what is your favorite show then, Vonny?

Yvonne:

Same as y’all- Doctor Who, Star Trek and Legion.

Jeannie:

Those are all as old as Mike!

Mike:

I heard that! Oh well, I guess this old man will need to take a long time to fix your snacks…!

Jeannie:

I’m sorry!

Elizabeth:

Actually, the Legion of Super Heroes first appeared in 1958, so they are older than Mike.

Mike:

Thank you!

Mary Nyan:

Metal Mania on VH1 Classic is fun too!

Jeannie:

Myayr, we’re supposed to be sticking to the science fiction, fantasy & horror genres!

Mary Nyan:

Hey, you should see some of those 80’s metal videos- they’re great! With barbarians, road warriors, ninjas, robots, monsters, demons…

Jeannie:

Good point!

Mary Nyan:

OK, here we go- here’s a topic for–

The Catgirls’ favorite mewsic videos that have

elements of science fiction, fantasy, or horror

Yvonne:

Myayr, you’re the expert so you go first, plus the rest of us might need to think about it nya…

Mary Nyan:

It is very a tough call, as I am rather fond of certain videos by Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, KISS, Meatloaf, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Dio, The Scorpions, Dokken, Rob Zombie-

Yvonne:

She’s getting long-winded again, nya!

Mary Nyan:

– and although “Hall of the Mountain King” by Savatage might be my favorite metal videoKate Bush’s “Hammer Horror” might be my all time favorite mewsic video of any cat-egory. That wasn’t so long, was it? (sticks her catgirl tongue out at Yvonne) Nyaa!

Yvonne:

You’re right I’m sorry, nya!

Elizabeth:

I think Michael Jackson’s Thriller is one of the best the mewsic videos of all time!

Jeannie:

My favorite would be Hayao Miyazaki’s animated mewsic video for the song On Your Mark -next to that would be the Leiji Matsumoto designed anime for Daft Punk’s Interstella 5555! That anime video for Clamp’s “X” by X Japan was pretty neat too. What are yours, Vonny?

Yvonne:

Duran Duran’s A View to a Kill, nya! Not my favorite Bond film, but I do like that song, nya! And there’s “Take on Me” by A-Ha in which the girl falls into a comic book, Bananarama’s “Venus” with all those Goddesses, oh and I like Britney Spears video for “Toxic” too, nya!

Elizabeth:

I liked the jacket that Simon Le Bon was wearing in “The Reflex” mewsic video.

Jeannie:

I would like to have been that body painted girl on the boat in their “Rio” mewsic video.

Mike:

OK girls here is a sushi plate- and just in time because it sounds like the topic is astray!

(All four catgirls in unison)

ARIGATOO GOZAIMASU!

Mary Nyan:

(chomp!)

Yvonne:

Mike needs to pick a video too, nya!

Mike:

The claymation music video for Frank Zappa’s “Inca Roads”- a great song and great video!

Mary Nyan:

“Turbo Lover” by Judas Priest has stop-motion creatures on motorcycles! And… how about the animated one for Queen’s “Innuendo”? Oh I almost forgot about Queen’s “Radio GaGa” video that incorporated scenes from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.

Elizabeth:

If we are including fan films, that “Star Wars Gangsta Rap” video was neat.

(All four catgirls in unison)

“We got Death Star!”

Jeannie:

How about Matt Bagshaw’s charming Star Wars fan film “Christmas Tauntauns”!

Yvonne:

I want a tauntaun, nya!

Mary Nyan:

I don’t know if Tauntauns would like the climate on Catgirl Island, it’s a bit warmer here than on Hoth.

Jeannie:

How about an Outer Banks Pony instead?

(All four catgirls in unison)

BANKER PONY BANKER PONY MEOW MEOW MEOW!

Yvonne:

Mi-ike…?

Mike:

Ah, we’ll have to see about that. Y’know, right after this year’s Trinoc*coN, some of the Carolina Garrison of the 501st Stormtroopers got to be on stage with Weird Al Yankovic during his “The Saga Begins” when he was in concert in Raleigh.

Mary Nyan:

The 501st is such an wonderful group! But back to the mewsic videos, I was so sure that Mike was gonna pick a video by YES or ELO because he listens to them while he draws!

Mike:

While it’s true that I mainly draw to music by Yes or ELO, it isn’t so much their videos I think of, although come to think of it I do like the video for Anderson Bruford Wakeman & Howe’s “Brother of Mine”… and y’know, there were a couple of early videos by Asia that I liked too. By the way, I was almost going to predict that Myayr would have picked Ozzy’s Jeckyll and Hyde-ish “Bark at the Moon” as her favorite video!

Mary Nyan:

Like I said, it was a very tough call, especially when trying to pick out a favorite video by Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, KISS, Meatloaf, Dio, Rob Zombie- they’ve made many  spectacular mewsic videos that include elements of fantasy, horror or science fiction.

Yvonne:

I’m telling y’all, she wants to list every one of them, nya!

Jeannie:

So shall we stick with this mewsic cat-egory a bit  longer, or move on to another topic?

Elizabeth:

Let’s not forget The Beastie Boys “Intergalactic” with the giant robot, monster ‘n sentai stuff – or their “Ch- Check it Out” video, with the Star Trek bits!

Yvonne:

(peers into empty bucket) Aw this shrimp tub is empty- ‘cept for a bit of dipping sauce, nya…

Mike:

OK I’m on it, sigh! Well then why don’t you girls change the topic while I get another round?

(All four catgirls in unison with big grins and swishing tails)

Hai!

(snip)

Mike:

OK we’re back. And for a special treat, the catgirls will now sing for their supper!

Mike:

annnd we’re back! Their tummies full (for the moment), it’s time for

The Catgirls’ DVD Purrchases

Yvonne:

So who’ll go first- how ’bout you Myayr, nya?

Mary Nyan:

I have the single disk edition of Spider-Man 3. In addition to the 2.40:1 anamorphic wide -screen edition of the movie, this edition of the DVD includes bloopers, 5 image galleries (sketches, paintings, sculptures, effects, the director & actors). There are video game and movie previews, Snow Patrol’s Signal Fire mewsic video, and 2 audio commentary tracks.

The 1st commentary track is by director Sam Raimi & actors Kirsten Dunst, Bryce Howard, Tobie Maguire, James Franco, Topher Grace and Thomas Haden Church. The 2nd audio commentary is by producers Laurie Ziskin, Avi Arad, Grant Curtis; visual effects supervisor Scott Stokdyk and film editor Bob Murawski. Also included in the package was a set of five color postcards with photos of the actors.

Different retail stores might sell the DVD with different store exclusive bonus items; mine was from Best Buy, which had a limited number of black or red Spider-Man masks. I got a red one! They were also giving away free Spider-Man 3 trick-or-treat bags while supplies lasted. So although this wasn’t the 2-disk edition (which includes various documentaries about the movie) I got a lot for my money and I am very pleased with the purr-chase!

Yvonne:

Wow that was quick for you, Myayr, nya!

Mary Nyan:

And y’all thought I was long-winded! OK Lizzy- your turn!

Elizabeth:

My review is of the Ratatouille DVD! Along with my favorite movie of 2007 there are two animated shorts, “Lifted” which was shown in theaters before Ratatouille, and the fun new “Your Friend the Rat”! Among the bonus features are 3 deleted scenes with comments by Brad Bird, producer Brad Lewis, and writer Jim Capobianco explaining why those scenes were cut, and “Fine Food and Film”, an almost 14 minute conversation with director Brad Bird & chef Thomas Keller. It is most mouth-watering, and I purr-ticularly liked the salmon- cleaning segment! I also found 2 ‘Easter Eggs’on the DVD’s main menu! So in summary,  I thought the DVD was full of wonderfully numcious tidbits! OK now it’s Vonny’s turn!

Yvonne:

My DVD review for this month is Paprika, nya! For our review of the movie itself, please refer to our August 2007 Mewsings, nya! Based upon the novel by Yasutaki Tsutsui, this 90 minute Japanese anime feature film was directed by Satoshi Kon, who also directed Perfect Blue, Millinium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers. My favorite voice actress Megumi Hayashibara purr-vides the voice for the title character, nya!

Released on R1 DVD by Sony, with various language and subtitle options, including filmmaker commentary, there are several extra features on this DVD, which I think can be best summed up as ‘charming’, nya! These include “Tsutsui and Kon’s Paprika”, a 30 minute documentary on the making of the film, featuring the author and director, nya. Next is the 29 minute “Conversation about the Dream” with Tsutsui, Kon, Hayashibara, and fellow voice actor Toru Furuya. Then there is the 15 minute “The Dream CG World”, with Director of Photography Michiya Kato showing how the computer animation for the film was done, and “The Art of fantasy”, a 12 minute short on the color theory and scenic art with Art Director Nobutaka Ike, nya!

Mary Nyan:

You know, Paprika’s synth mewsic  by Susumu Hirasawa reminds me a bit of Walt Disney World’s main street electrical parade.

Jeannie:

That would seem appropriate! So, do you have a review, Mike?

Mike:

My review is of The Wild Wild West Season 3! Although the 1967-68’s season’s 24 full-color episodes are purr-haps not quite as iconic and fantastic as the 2nd, it is nonetheless as dazzling with highest production values. The astounding team of Robert Conrad and Ross Martin continue to deliver brilliant purr-formances and thrills galore amidst lavishly decorated and beautifully lit sets, rugged western locations, gorgeous costumes and gadgets, all set to some of the finest music score and stunt scenes to ever grace television.

Some of my purr-ticularly favorite episodes of this season include “Night of the Bubbling Death”, “The Night Dr. Loveless Died”, “Night of the Falcon”,  “Night of the Firebrand”, “Night of the Jack o’ Diamonds”, “Night of the Legion of Death”, Night of the Samurai”,  “Night of the Turncoat”, “Night of the Undead”, and “Night of the Underground Terror”.

The 3rd season’s guest stars include Nick Adams, Richard Anderson, Ed Asner, Jackie Coogan, Khigh Dhiegh, Bradford Dilman, Michael Dunn, Paul Fix, Mark Lenard, Robert Loggia, John McGiver, Arlene Martel, Susan Oliver, William Schallert, Ray Walston, Dawn Wells, and Anthony Zerbe!  The DVD does not seem to have any extra features aside from the episodes, but the episodes are so much fun to watch, and I would heartily recommend it, and I look forward to the future release of the final, 4th season.

Elizabeth:

Jennyjen’s turn!

Jeannie:

I bought the regular edition DVD of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya vol. 4, the final volume of the first series. This includes episodes 12-14 in chronological order, totaling 75 minutes long, which can be viewed with either Japanese or English audio, and with English subtitles. The episodes are purr-ticularly amewsing; in Episode 12 Haruhi dons a bunnygirl costume to front a rock band on stage at the school festival. Episode 13 is the exciting space battle computer game duel against the computer club.  Episode 14 ends the series on a somewhat quiet note, with Kyon going out on a dreary day to get a heater for their club room.

Among the delightful DVD extras are various TV spots, a Nekoman gallery, video clips of voice actress Aya Hirano visiting the animation studio and promoting her mewsic CD, a Lucky Star anime preview, a special ending version of the end-credits “Sunny Sunny Happiness” dance, and more of the live-action SOS Brigade segments. You get to see the live-action Brigade lead by Patricia Ja Lee do the dance! I’m very pleased with this DVD, and the entire series has become one of my favorite anime!

Yvonne:

Speaking of which, after our next snack break will be the-

Catgirls’ List of Best Japanese Anime of All Time, nya!

(snip)

Mike:

OK girls you’re on again!

Mary Nyan:

Thanks for all the fish sandwiches- that was a good snack break!

Yvonne:

I’m so full I feel like I will pop out of my bikini, nya!

Jeannie:

That would be a ratings boost.

Elizabeth:

Good thing ‘The Mew’ is work-safe text with no visuals of what we are or aren’t wearing.

Mike:

Well, let’s not digress any further and stray back to this anime topic! Let’s start with y’all’s picks for OVA (Original Video Animation), or direct-to-home-video releases, and for the sake of brevity let’s limit the responses to maybe 5 apiece. Who would like to start?

Yvonne:

Wait- you forgot to tell us the criteria besides the cat-egories, nya!

Jeannie:

Hai! By ‘Best Anime’, do you mean titles that we think have the most cultural or industry importance… or the ones we purrsonally find most entertaining?

Mike:

However you wish to define it. It could even be significant for sentimental reasons. So maybe your nominees are personal favorites, maybe they are what you deem to be great artistic achievements. But whether any given anime title is or isn’t popular with anyone else shouldn’t be a factor. So, anime OVAs, 5 or so each- who’ll start?

Mary Nyan:

I’ll go! Some of my favorite anime OVA include Bubblegum Crisis, Gunsmith Cats, Gall Force, Sol Bianca, and the original Gunbuster- but NOT that newer Gunbuster. Vonny?

Yvonne:

My turn my turn! Catgirl Nuku Nuku, 3×3 Eyes, Devil Hunter Yohko, Iria the Animation, & Galaxy Fraulein Yuna, nya! Nuku Nuku is my most favorite of those, nya (tags Jen)!

Jeannie:

Gosh…  I like the ones they’ve already mentioned… but I’ll also say Idol Project, Geobreeders, Dirty Pair Flash, Tenchi Muyo, and Mermaid’s Forest!

Elizabeth:

Well, Ah My Goddess and You’re Under Arrest  have always been among of my favorite anime, that’s two of them. Doh! Vampire Princess Miyu, fur sure! Annndd… Magic Users Club, and… I think Elcia was pretty good. What about you Mike? You should join in this!

Mike:

Macross Plus, Giant Robo and Area 88 was quite thrilling, Gundam: War in the Pocket is my favorite Gundam story; Blue Submarine Number Six is one of Gonzo’s better efforts, and Dominion Tank Police is I think one of the best adaptations of Masamune  Shirow’s work! OK, let’s move on to feature films- Jenjen, care to go first?

Jeannie:

Kiki’s Delivery Service, The Cat Returns, Project A-Ko, Dirty Pair: Project Eden, and Ranma Movie 2: Nihao My Concubine!

Elizabeth:

Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Whisper of the Heart, and Millennium Actress!

Mary Nyan:

Nausicaa, Grave of the Fireflies, Akira, Wings of Honneamise, Weathering Continent, and Silent Mobius the Movie.

Yvonne:

Laputa, My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso, Pom Poko, and Only Yesterday, nya! (tags Mike) Mi-ike, what are yours, nya?

Jeannie:

Yamato, Yamato, Yamato… heh!

Mike:

Yeah, pretty much- Arrivederci Yamato, Be Forever Yamato, Final Yamato, Spirited Away, and Cagliostro’s Castle- which is definitely the first thing that I would ever show to anyone who was unfamiliar with Japanese anime, but had an interest in seeing a prime example  of it. OK, that’ll it for feature films- let’s finish with TV series. Vonny or Lizzy care to go first?

Yvonne:

I’m still thinkin’ so Lizzy should go first, nya!

Elizabeth:

All righty… ahh… this is even tougher to narrow down because there are so many! Hmm, Azumanga Daioh, Kami Chu, Blue Seed, Sailor Moon, and Magical Meow Meow Taruto!

Yvonne:

OK I’m ready nya! Yawara, Battle Athletes, Stratos 4, Princess Nine, and Last Exile, nya!

Jeannie:

Maison Ikkoku, followed by Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Inu Yasha, and or my fifth one either Kimagure Orange Road or Fushigi Yuugi… no wait maybe Sherlock Hound… aw this is too difficult…

Yvonne:

Earlier you said Melancholy of Haruhiu Suzumiya was one of your favorite series too, nya!

Jeannie:

I know! Sigh… what about you. Myayr?

Mary Nyan:

Patlabor, Hyper Police, Silent Mobius, Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, and Dirty Pair!

Yvonne:

After Mike goes then we’ll be all done, nya!

Mike:

Space Cruiser Yamato, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Nadia- Secret of Blue Water -which is in my opinion the last good anime by Gainax; The Mysterious Cities of Gol – which is apparently finally coming out on R1 DVD in 2008, according to an article at TVshowsonDVD.com, and I think Cowboy Bebop should also be on our list!

Elizabeth:

What about Macross?

Mary Nyan:

That should be on the list.

Jeannie:

Well there’s so much good anime but we tried to cap the number, otherwise we’d keep going and going…

Yvonne:

Like one of Myayr’s crits, nya!

Mary Nyan:

Ah–! I think I’ve been rather succinct today!

Mike:

Now now, let’s all behave. Actually, there’s one more question for y’all to conclude this discussion thread. Are there any other recent anime titles you think are destined to be regarded as classics? This could be a movie, OVA or TV series. Vonny, it’s your honor!

Yvonne:

I bet Aria will if it ever gets licensed for US distribution, nya! (tags Mary Nyan)

Mary Nyan:

But… haven’t you only read the manga that Aria is based upon?

Yvonne:

Hai! But we must convince some company to get it, nya! (tags Mary Nyan again)

Mary Nyan:

Oh, I think Genshiken definitely has that potential! (tags Elizabeth)

Elizabeth:

Gotta go with The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya! (tags Jeannie)

Jeannie:

You know, when we all reviewed Paprika back in August, we thought it was good, but we were not exactly raving about it compared to Satoshi Kon’s prior films. It only got a limited theatrical release here- but I’m thinking purrhaps when it’s eventually released on DVD here, it might gain a much wider audience, and might grow on us even more.

Yvonne:

That was hard work- I think we need more delicious food to replenish our energy, nya!

Mary Nyan:

I… sure could use a drink refill …(grin)!

Mike:

Oh Ok! (goes into the kitchen to get  the catgirls dessert)

(All four catgirls in unison)

ARIGATOO GOZAIMASU!

Mary Nyan:

He is a good Producer.

Elizabeth:

Hai hai.

Yvonne:

We should purrobably start a new topic, nya

Jeannie:

Ok, how about our first movie review of the holiday season!

Beowulf Review (warning: possible plot spoilers ahead)

Elizabeth:

I was eager to see this because of so much top talent involved such as Robert Zemickis, Ken Ralston, Alan Silvestri, Neil Gamin, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Wistone & Angelina Jolie, etc. However I think I would have preferred a live action movie by them instead of the mo-cap animation technique, and I hate to say this but ironically for a 3-D movie the characters were very two dimensional. Also, the 3-D effect was a bit annoying in a regular theater- it was just too obtrusive, but the battle scenes were quite thrilling, scary, and intense.

Mary Nyan:

Any given single frame of this beautifully designed film would be a stunning work of art, but the technique just seemed odd, as if the characters were all moving, talking waxwork mannequins. It would have been one magnificently lavishly illustrated book! The design & detail of the characters, the costumes, scenery and creatures are quite splendid, but the characters just did not seem totally lifelike to me- a similar issue I had with, oh, other

such animated films like Polar Express, Final Fantasy Spirits Within, and Kaena. I think Mo-cap is a goof FX technique for live action films, as used in Lord of the Rings and King Kong, but as animation, thus far the technology seems more suited for video games than films. But purr-haps as visionaries such as Robert Zemickis continue to develop this tool, it will be purrfected, but it should still be used to serve the story, not the other way round.

Jeannie:

Grendle was very much like Frankenstien’s Monster too me, in that he is a misshapen murderous creature, yet had he received the proper guidance and love from his parents purr-haps all parties would’ve enjoyed a better life with fewer severed limbs. His mommy was a deceitful, manipulative evil demon, his royal daddy seemed to have shamelessly abandoned him. Bewulf repeats this, and although in the end tries to heroically end the cycle by slaying the dragon with his last dying strength, his best friend does not want to know the truth and we are left wondering if he as the new kingwill succumb to the hag’s continued deceit. Grendle might be the most sympathetic and well developed character in the film, if he had not slain a lot of people that purr-obly did not deserve it.

Yvonne:

I bet most folks are gonna comment on the 3-D, animation, sex & violence, but this movie had great sounds, nya! The actors’ voices are all so rich, powerful & exotic, the mewsic score & songs were terrific, and the sound effects were excellent, nya. I bet the sound editor had such a tough job trying to balance all of those important elements, but the result was a magnificent soundscape, nya!

Mike:

(returns with a beverage pitcher & a huge Ice Cream Moondae with 5 spoons) OK dig in!

(All four catgirls in unison)

THANK YOU FOR FEEDING US!

Elizabeth:

yum yum! (tail swishing happily)

Yvonne:

A Moondae is like a Sundae but better, nya!

Jeannie:

(chomp)

Mary Nyan:

Any other Beowulf comments? Mike?

Mike:

The nudity though… came off as just silly. Beowulf’s nide fight scene seemed like it wanted to that episode of M*A*S*H in which Hawkeye walks around naked, with various objects around the 4077th conveniently obscuring his privates-which was funny then, but in Beowulf it is more tedious and silly than actually funny. It’s no M*A*S*H. Also, a gratuitous shot of a barmaid’s cleavage bouncing all over the place as she scrubbed a table was also overboard, done just for a 3D effect I assume. Although there ample views of bare male viking buttocks, they seemed a bit timid in depicting Grendel’s Mother’s nudity, covering her with some sort of odd gold slime. It’s like the movie either went too far or not far enough… I’m not sure which.

Ah well. So… what is the next movie y’all want to see?

Elizabeth:

I am Legend and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem are the two I’m most interested in seeing next!

Mary Nyan:

Tim Burton & Johhny Depp re-teaming for Sweeny Todd!

Jeannie:

Those, and National Treasure: Book of Secrets!

Yvonne:

Can you take us to see The Golden Compass, nya?

Mike:

Oh I think that can be arranged! Say catgirls, with 2008 just a month away, what are your

Coming Cat-tractions: Cinematic Anticipations for 2008

Elizabeth:

The films I am most looking forward to are… Batman The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Hellboy 2, The Incredible Hulk 2, The Punisher 2, Sin City 2, and Watchmen! How about you Vonny?

Yvonne:

Oh gosh… I’m purr-obably most looking forward to… the new Indiana Jones, James Bond, Rambo, Jurassic Park and Mummy movies, Speed Racer and Get Smart, nya! JennyJen?

Jeannie:

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Tinkerbell,  Pixar’s Wall-E, The Power of the Dark Crystal, The Little Mermaid 3, Ponyo on a Cliff, and it would sure be nice if Tales from Earthsea were to be finally released! Your turn, Myayr!

Mary Nyan:

Okay… um… that I also wanna Cloverfields, Day of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, Doomsday, Godzilla 3D to the Max, Machete, and Meg.

Jeannie:

What movies do you want to see in 2008, Mike?

Mary Nyan:

Oh it’s not hard to figure out which one he’s most interested in, heh!

Mike:

Ye-ah, that’d be Star Trek, provided that it fits into officially established cannon / continuity and that it’s no more comedic that the first three Star Trek films. I do hope that Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov and Uhura are not only NOT all serving aboard the Starship Enterprise together at that time given what’s been established about their career histories.

Elizabeth:

Don’t mince words Mike- what do you really think? Hee!

Mike:

It’d be nice if it was as epic, elegant and as grand as Star Trek the Motion Picture too, and doesn’t feel like it’s just a 2 hour TV episode. I hope that these smart, heroic, highly trained Starfleet characters are treated seriously, the supporting characters are not just regulated to buffoonery at their expense; let this crew be in firm control of their destiny, and not like a small fish in a big pond… and please for Trek’s sake, no more time travel or dune buggies, and I hope there’s no annoying jerky handheld camera, crash zooms, bullet time or speed ramping in the next Trek movie. Or any other movie for that matter.

Jeannie:

He is very purr-ticular about Star Trek.

Yvonne:

I know bullet time from The Matrix and Charlie’s Angels movies, but what’s a crash zoom or a speed ramp, nya?

Elizabeth:

Ah, you know those shots that we dislike on Galactica or Firefly, where they track a spaceship then zoom into it? That’s a crash zoom, if I am not mistaken. Speed ramping is when a scene in the movie switches from normal speed to slow motion or fast forward- as in Gladiator, Die  Another Day, and 300.

Yvonne:

And the jerky handheld camera is like in the Bourne movies, nya?

Elizabeth:

Purr-cisely. And in way too many horror movies these days.

Mary Nyan:

I liked Firefly in spite of those zooms, not because of them, and it’s one of the reasons I don’t care much for the new Battlestar Galactica.

Mike:

Ah, heck I’m sorry I rambled on so long about that and got us off topic!  Well then, let’s proceed to… how about things we’ve read of late?

Any particular comic books stand out?
