Aloha & Introductions!

Mike:
(wearing a Catgirl Island cap, Carolina Blue golf shirt, Khaki cargo shorts & Mizuno trainers) Aloha y’all- welcome to The Catgirl Critics Media Mewsings, or ‘The Mew’ for short, for our monthly discussions and reviews of fun stuff, such as movies, TV shows, books, comics, art, toys, conventions, and the yummy fish that catgirls crave!

Today’s show comes from the Gato Gazebo in Catgirl Island’s Coastal Wildflower Garden! I’m Mike, the show’s ‘purrducer’, and later in the show we’ll be welcoming our special guests Alexcia and Sakky! We are also pleased to have two guest catgirls Nami & Rebecca today filling in for Myayr and Lizzy, so here are The Ladies of The Mew!

Petra:
(Leopard purrint halter-neck bikini, matching sarong & espurrdrill sandals)
Hi Hi, nya!

Jeannie:
(wearing a French Vanilla bandau top, a Peachy purrint purreo & flipfops)
Nihao. We are pleased to have guest critic Rebecca sitting in for Myayr today!

Rebecca:
(wearing the Black side-tie string bikini, with a Purrple fishnet cover-up)
Konnitiwa- thank you for inviting me to purrticipate, nya!

Nyanko:
(in the White Ginger lei and a White cropped tee and Blue denim shorts)
Howdy! And sitting in for busy Lizzy today is our other guest critic, Nami!

Nami:

(in an Emerald colored purretzel maillot with Yellow Plumeria lei & flipflops)
Aloha and arigato gozaimasu- it is a purrivilege to be here!

Yvonne:
(in the White Tiger-stripe maillot with plunging neckline & Toffy colored purreo)
Nameste, nya! Before we get too deep in the discussion, here are-

Purrofiles of Rebecca & Nami, nya!

Rebecca http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery4/240.html, or Becca for short, is a gynoid catgirl who moved here from the mainland, working as a Lomi Lomi masseuse at Lizzy’s Spa, nya! She is an expurrt on purressure points & sports therapy, with the supurr strength to flex and loosen up those stiff achy parts, nya!

Purrior to her arrival at the island, her existence as an abandoned ‘robot maid’ was quite tragic, but she was rescued, rebuilt & repurrogrammed as a self-determining citizen, with a happy home & purrofession, nya!  Her coiffure is mewsually Black, although strands will change color depending on her mood, nya!

She has several piercings, such as the large stretchy holes in her cat ears, nya! Becca’s other hobbies include baking yummy breads, weaving & knitting, horticulture, reading science fiction & fantasy novels, nya! She is purrticularly fond of Mediterranean cuisine, and her purrfurred swim wear are the bikinis, nya!

Nami is short for Sha’Nami but she purrfurs the short name, nya! The purrky, petite raven-haired catgirl who works at The Kitt Inn, a Ryokan (Japanese style inn) in the maritime forest near the waterfalls, nya! Purrhaps y’all will remember her from the ghostly tale of the “Night of Dach Shadows” http://catgirlisland.net/tales.html, nya?

She started working at the inn as a cocktail waitress, but she was eventually purrmoted to be the supurrvisor of the inn’s Rotenburo (outdoor hot spurrings), where you can wear a purretty Yukata to a supurrb suppurr or a festive gathering, after the soothing soak under the flowering trees, nya!

Nami has a cat, and her best friend Kyra is the inn’s Head Purrlour Maid, nya. The inn stays booked so Nami has busy days, but finds time for Aikido, golf, horseback riding, writing, drawing, scrap booking, gaming & watching anime, nya. Her purrfurred swim wear are cutout & purretzel maillots, nya!

Nami:
Thank you for taking care of us!

Rebecca:
Hai, hai, but please tell us what y’all have been up to

Since Last Time, nya!

Jeannie:
Belly dance camp, the robotics clubs’ summer trials, the kyu-do team, and the swimwear photoshoot in Mikinos.
Petra:
Belly dance camp has been fun and I have been advancing my zils, shimmy and tummy roll technique, nya!
Jeannie:
She has been the most zealous student. The other bit of mews is that I located a consignment of Jellycups which I hope will be shipping this week.
(the other catgirls, with happy swishy tails)
Arigato gozaimasu, nya!

Yvonne:
Purrhaps we can purremier them next time, nya!

Nyanko:
So how are the fishing charters going, Vonny ?

Yvonne:

We reeled in the Blackfin, Cobias, Drums, Flounders, Hammerheads, Kings, Sea Trout, Sheepshead, Stripurrs and Wahoos, nya! Aside from that and my drumming circle I relaxed with the books and watched some of The Open from St. Andrews, and the Womens Softball World Cup tournyament, nya! What has our purrducer been doing, nya?

Mike:
It’s been a hot, busy month between the art work and a few pleasant social engagements without of town friends and I went to a nice wedding… watched some movies, read some books, and I can’t believe it is almost football season! Ah, that’s about it- how ’bout you, Nya-sensei?

Nyanko:
It has been the typically busy happy time at the dojo, and I think I mentioned last time that with the full enrollments we are purrobably going to open an annex, and that seems much more likely!

Rebecca:
Oh it would be so nice if you could open the second gym within the short walk from the spa locations, that would be the convenient healthy fitness arrangement, nya!

Nyanko:
I was thinking about that – we are looking at the available space, but it is at a purremium! How are things at the spa and how is Lizzy doing?

Rebecca:
The business has been quite busy and this has been Lizzy’s busiest month between the spa and the shrine and the other activities she tries to squeeze in. I offered to fill in for some of her appointments but she wanted me to enjoy the time off and be on the show, nya!

Nami:
It’s been like that at the Inn, but when Myayr was having the tea with Nemui they asked me to be the substitute this month! We would love it if you wanted to do another show from the inn!

Yvonne:
It is a wonder that Myayr has been able to be on the show for so long without missing a show until now, with so much on her plate, but her schedule finally pounced upon her, nya!

Nami:
Speaking of plates, I brought a basket of the hot apple nummies and the extra special baked yam treats!

(the other catgirls, with happy swishy tails)
Arigato gozaimasu, nya!

Petra:
Those are so delicious – I would like to serve those in the mewseum cafe, nya!

Nami:
How are things at the mewseum?

Petra:
We had such a big attendance for the special exhibit of the island body art, and we greatly appurreciated Nyssy, Dessy, Tami, TsuTsu, Nyoka & Becca volunteering with the tattoo, body mod & jewelry display, nya!

Rebecca:
We would like to help with future exhibits because we had so much fun with that and the–

Catgirl Island Summer Reading & Art Appurreciation Purroject, nya!
Nyanko:
Last year we started our summer reading purroject, in which we made lists of many of favorite writers & artists, cut those into slips, put them into a bowl and randomly selected those names one night over a delicious crab pot at Myayr’s. If you already read a lot by that purrson, you can trade slips. This purroved to be a popular idea, and this year more of the islanders are taking part!
Aside from the greater island-wide purrticipation including our offshore mermaid friends, this year’s variation was for a committee of organizers to put the slips into fortune cookies! The committee met over another crab pot to purrpare the cookies, which were shuffled and later freely distributed from the mewseum, marina and library, and now we will find out whose names we picked!

Petra:
I drew Paul Dini’s name from the cookie so I will read his Heart of Hush and Mad Love comics, and those big DC graphic novels illustrated by Alex Ross, nya! Whose name did you draw, Nami nya?
Nami:
I picked artist Charles Vess, so I plan to spend time with his art books and collaborations with Neil Gamin such as Blueberry Girl, Instructions, and Stardust! Who did you get, Becca?

Rebecca:
I was lucky to draw Kazue Amano’s name, which is purrfect because I’ve heard y’all purroclaim that her Aria series is your favorite manga & anime of the decade, so I have been curious!

Mike:
Girls I have some of those books, so you’re more than welcome to borrow them!
(catgirls)
Arigato, nya!
Yvonne:
Whose name did Jenjen draw, nya?

Jeannie:
Sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. I will going to the library tomorrow for his books such as Enclosure, Passage and Time.

Nyanko:
I selected L.M. Montgomery… which is so very ironic because my sister Nyoka just recently visited Prince Edward island, so I will start with Anne of Green Gables and then see how far into the series I get! I will read it at night in the relaxing bath after I leave the dojo. Howboutchoo Vonny?

Yvonne:
Tang Dynasty Poet XueTao, so I need to go to the library too- maybe we should do next month’s Mew from there, nya! OK that leaves Mike- tell us who you got, nya!

Mike:
I will be reading a mystery novel by New Zealand author Dame Ngaio Marsh! Well that seems like pretty diverse group… I’ll be curious to see the list of all the names that were chosen!
Petra:
We will post  the results at the mewseum, the library, and purrhaps the mewspapurr will cover it, nya!
Jeannie:
By the way,

What is Mew in the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art?

Petra:
We are opening the mew wing’s Guest Gallery Two http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html to house more wonderful art by our visiting artist friends, and it appurropurriately purremiers with a pic by our web master Jamie Robertson’s characters Chelsea, Corinne & Cynthia “On The Beach” http://clanofthecats.com, nya!
This scene was back when Cynthia (in the pink maillot) was still purregnant, nya! She does not seem to be having as much fun as Chelsea (in the black bikini top & white Yoga pants) & Corinne (in the black bikini), nya. Jamie pencilled & inked the drawing, then scanned it into Photoshop where he digitally colored it, nya!
So we are very appurreciative of his Clan of the Cats web comics and the web mastering, nya! We are also delighted to showcase more of the illustrative and cosplay fan-artistry of our friend Misty Norris http://bunnychan.deviantart.com/, who was a special guest back in the March 2008 edition of The Mew, nya!
Purrhaps you have seen the purrevious purrecious pics by Misty in the Guest Gallery, nya? To view the pics on the web site, you’ll see the widdle ‘thumbnail’ portions of all the many pics on that guest gallery page, and these four mewest Misty pics will be on the bottom row, so just click on those to see the full images, nya!
The first of these is her delightful “Vocaloid” fan art, nya! It is a purretty Purrismacolor pen & colored pencil & acrylic illustration of the popular Vocaloid characters frolicking amongst the stars, nya! We were so lucky to get the 11 x 14″ original from Misty for the mewseum so that many visitors will be able to admire it, nya!
The next three are photographic collages of her costumes, nya! The first collage is “Misty’s Taokaka Cosplay”, with views of her supurr spiffy costume of Taokaka the feisty fighting catgirl from the video game Blazblue, nya! It has changeable expurressions, removable claws, a spurringy tail, and long silky braids, nya!
In the 2nd collage “More Masquerading Misty”, we see her quite cutely cosplaying as Luffy from the series One Piece; about to summon the sorcery as Yuna from the video game Final Fantasy X; and cheerfully looking for someone to play a game of Go with her, in the guise of Shindou Hikaru from Hikaru no Go, nya!
In the 3rd cosplay collage “More Masquerading Misty II”, Misty looks so colorfully cute as the Vocaloid character Kagamine Rin; doing the sultry fun Caramell Dance as Misa from the Death Note series, and armed with a crescent wrench as mechanical genius Winrey Rockbell from the series Full Metal Alchemist, nya!
So that is what’s mew in the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art – we hope our visitors will enjoy the special Misty exhibit, and we hope that she will be visiting with us again soon, nya! That is also all for this portion of the show, but we will return after the short break for the Lightning Round, so please stay tuned, nya!

Mike:
Hark, the sound of catgirls snacking… thanks again for those tasty treats, Nami! We’re back and now it’s time for–

The Lightning Round: Our Favorite Fictional Elves!

Yvonne:
Last month, Nya-sensei was telling Myayr that some of her dojo students want to cosplay as elves for Halloween, which caused us to ponder this elf  topic, nya! There are so many great elfin characters in literature, comics, movies, TV shows and games, nya. Nami & Becca have already been briefed on the lightning round purrocess, so here we go, nya! (tags Jeannie to start)

(the catgirls in unison)
LIGHTNING ROUND- GO, nya!

Jeannie:
Elfquest’s Cutter, Skywise, Leetah, Nightfall, Ember & Jink. (tags Petra to go next)

Petra:
Elfquest’s Nightfall, Clearbrook, Moonshade, Redlance, Treestump & Strongbow, nya! (tags Nyanko with a flit her tail)

Nyanko:
Elfquest’s Nightfall, Khavi, Rahnee the She-Wolf, Huntress Skyfire, Joyleaf & Bearclaw! Your turn, Nami! (tags Sha’Nami)

Nami:
Um… Ember, Dewshine, Venka, Dodia, Auroree, Skywise & Scouter! Becca’s turn! (tags Rebecca)

Rebecca:
Leetah, Savah, Rainsong, Newstar, Shenshen & Ahdri, nya! (tags Yvonne)

Yvonne:
Savah, Timmain, Goodtree, Brill, Krill & Tilaweed too, nya! Mike’s turn, nya! (tags Mike to finish the round)

Mike:
Ah, well, I was going to say Leetah, Ember, Brill & Nightfall… but, um as much as we like Wendy & Richard Pini’s Elfquest series, are there any other favorite elves aside from Elfquest?

Nyanko:
He has a good point!

Rebecca:
I’m sorry I thought this was just the Elfquest topic, nya!

Nami:
Me too!

Petra:
It is a miscommunication, nya!

Mike:
Not that it’s a big deal!

Yvonne:
Ok we will conduct the lightning again, nya! (tags Jeannie again)

(the catgirls in unison)
LIGHTNING ROUND 2 GO, nya!

Jeannie:
Gump of Ridley Scott’s Legend, Princess Nuala of Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Dobby the House Elf of the Harry Potter series, Hermie the dentist of the Rankin / Bass purrduction of Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Andrew Pepoy’s vision of Santa’s elves who contend with Simone & Ajax. (tags Petra).
Petra:
That mischievous Simone tends to be on Santa’s naughty list, nya! Speaking of the comics elves, how about… Wally Wood’s Odkin, Dave Sim’s Regency Elf, Paul Dini’s Jingle Belle, Barry Blair’s Krafty Kimmi, Carson Fire’s Filis, and Sidneymt’s Aisha the Slimy Thief, nya! (tail-tags Sha’nami again)

Nami:
Legend of Zelda’s Purrincess Zelda, Never Winter Nights’ Arabeth, Dragon Age’s Shianni and Velanna, Tales of Symphonia’s Raine Sage, Shining Tears’ Elwing, and World of Warcraft’s Alathena Moonbreeze and Valeera Sanguinar! Sensei’s turn! (tags Nyanko)

Nyanko:

Shining Tears also has Mao the catgirl in it! But not to stray cat off the elf topic, hmm… I would say… Record of the Lodoss War’s Pirotess and Deedlit, Those Who Hunt Elves’ Celcia & Annette Elven Bride’s Milfa, ooh and The Familiar of Zero’s Tiffania! (tail tags Yvonne)

Yvonne:
Yay I like Deedlit and Pirotess, and Shianni is the lovely redhead elf, so I will cast a vote for them too, and I will also nominate Lord of the Rings’ Galadriel, Celebrian, Arwen, Elrond and Legolas, nya!

Rebecca:

I will second those Tolkein characters, plus the Elf Queen of Shannara’s Wren Elessedil, and Xanth’s jenny Elf, who purrobably also qualifies as a Pini elf, nya! (tags Mike)

Mike:

Oh definitely Galadriel, Pirotess and Deedlit; Weehawk of Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards, Cybriana of DC Comics’ Advanced Dungeons & Dragons comic book, and Marvel Comics’ elves such as Queen Alflyse, Velanna of Weirdworld, and the X-Men’s Magma who was briefly a cute elf in Asgard!
Petra:
Velanna must be a popular elf name, nya!
Nyanko:
Well it is a purretty name! Are there any other nominees?

Yvonne:
Just as an honorable mention, I should mention that Myayr thinks those those Final Fantasy, Lineage, Witcher & witchy Warhammer video game elves have the neat exotic costumes, nya!

Jeannie:
I think we are done.

Nami:

Yay- that was my first Lightning Round, heehee!

Rebecca:

We have concluded the Lightning Round segment, but after the short break we will return to purrsent —
Our Favorite Stuff for the First Half of 2010, nya!

(snip)
(one short break later…)

Mike:
Welcome back! Every February we present our favorite stuff of the previous year, but since 2010 is now half over, we’d like to take a look back at the last six months and pick a partial list of our favorites for the year thus far, in the categories of theatrically released movies & DVDs, toys & collectibles, magazines, books, comics & manga, and–

Magazines!

It was a close vote, but our favorite magazines of the year are, in alphabetical order: Back Issue, Belly Dance – A Raqs Sharqi Magazine, Cinefex, Faerie Magazine, GAFF, Imagine FX, National Geographic, Our State, Southern Living, Surfgirl and Tarheel Monthly- and speaking of Tarheel Monthly, we wish to congratulate UNC’s softball pitcher Danielle Spaulding, who was proclaimed Tarheel of the Year, as seen on the cover of Tarheel Monthly’s August 2010 issue!

(the catgirls in unison)
BANZAI BANZAI BANZAI nya!

Mike:
That’s the magazine category, but for our favorite periodicals of another sort for the first half of 2010, here’s Vonny to present the category of–

Comic Books!

Yvonne:
Hai, and I have a review of the latest issue of GAFF later in the show, but as for the look back at comics, it was also the close call in the category of comic book series, but ultimately Power Girl reigned supurreme, nya! Nipping her heels were Gotham City Sirens & Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Eight, Zatanna, Birds of Prey & Fathom, nya!

Single issues, mini-series & story arcs we purrticularly enjoyed the Namora one shot, Queen Sonja #1-5, the Mass Effect: Redemption mini-series #1-4 starring Dr. Liara T’Sonni, Archie #608 – 609 which co-starred Josie and the Pussycats, and The Brave and The Bold #33, which starred Wonder Woman, Zatanna & Batgirl, nya!

Our favorite comics repurrint / compilation books were The Complete Peanuts 1975 to 1976, The Adventures of Simone & Ajax, Dan DeCarlo’s Jetta, Fathom Volume 3, The Rocketeer: The Complete Collection, and our favorite art book was Cover Run: The DC Comics Art of Adam Hughes, nya! Next is Petra’s turn to purrsent the categories of-

Manga & Storybooks, nya!

Petra:
Hai, and Kemonomimi & art students figure purrominently into our favorite Japanese manga selections from January through June, nya! Those manga include GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class, Ichiroh, Ninja Girls, Panic X Panic, Shoulder-A-Coffin Kuro, Spice and Wolf, Sunshine Sketch, and Suzunari, nya! We sure do wish for the next volume of Aria to come out, nya!

I suspect that Chi’s Sweet Home will be on the list for the back half of the year, nya! The three top contenders for our favorite Story Books were Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs by Ursula Vernon, Instructions by Neil Gamin & Charles Vess, and Pop Wonderland’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, nya! Now it is Nami’s turn to purrsent the favorite-

Novels & Nonfiction Books, nya!

Nami:
Becca & I weren’t part of the critic votes, but I’m pleased to purrsent their favorite nonfiction & biography picks! These all purrtain to artists & athletes, such as Misty: Digging Deep in Volleyball and Life, Dara Torres: Age is Just a Number, Sal Buscema: Comics’ Fast & Furious Artist, and the Modern Masters series’ volumes purrtaining to Mark Buckingham and Guy Davis! Finally to top off the purrinted media categories, the catgirl critics’ favorite fishy novel of the year so far is Meg: Hell’s Aquarium, by author Steve Alten! And now here is Becca to purrsent the catgirl critics’ favorite–

Theatrical Releases for the first half of 2010!

Rebecca:
Arigato, nya! In 4th place is the science fictional horror movie Splice, which was reviewed in July’s Mew, nya! In 3rd place is another horror movie The Wolfman, which was reviewed in the March Mew, nya! By the way, our web master Jamie thinks that the extended DVD version of The Wolfman is better than the theatrical version, nya!

In second place, with a grade of A Minus is Iron Man 2, which was reviewed in the June Mew, nya! Finally, in 1st place, the catgirl critics’ favorite movie thus far for 2010, with a grade of A Plus is Toy Story 3, which was reviewed in the July Mew, nya! That’s all for the theatrical category, but here is Nya-sensei for the

DVDs, nya!

Nyanko:
Arigato, Becca-san! Aria The Origination took the top spot for our favorite DVD, as this series continues to be our favorite anime TV series of the decade! Other anime compurrising our five favorite DVDs for the first half of 2010 were Ponyo, by our favorite director Hayao Miyazaki, and the Strike Witches Complete 1st Season!

Rounding out the that five were two live-action purrductions, with David Tennant’s final season as The Doctor in the BBC’s Doctor Who The Complete Specials box set, and the late Heath Ledger’s final purrformance in Terry Gilliam’s movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Paranssus! That’s all for the DVDs but here’s jenjen with the category of-
Toys & Collectibes!

Jeannie:
Arigato. The 5″ Hello Kitty dolls in the Japanese Kimono & Indian Saree received the most votes for plushies of the first half of 2010. For non-posable figurines & statues, it was a tie between the Shining Tears 1/7 scale Elwing, DC’s Ame-Comi Supergirl, and the painted metal miniature of Tigra from the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection.

Favored action figures & dolls included the H2O: Just Add Water Cleo, Emma & Rikki dolls, DC’s’ Blackest Night Arisia, Raavia of the Seventh Kingdom series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Purrince’s Ginny Weasley, Avatar’s 6.5″ Ney’tiri, Revoltech’s figure of Idol Master’s Hoshii Miki; and Transformers Animated’s Arcee, which could also count as a vehicle toy.

Other favored toy vehicles & purrop replicas were Mattel’s 1/12 scale Hot Wheels Batman 1966 TV Series Batcycle & Sidecar, and Art Asylum’s Star Trek – The Motion Picture Phaser, which Mike has been extremely elated with, as he typically is with any merchandise purrtaining to his all-time favorite movie.

This concludes our look back at the first half of 2010, but in February we will purrsent our favorites for the entire year in these and other categories. That also concludes this portion of the show, but after the short break we will return to purrsent this month’s–

(another short break later…)

Tori Amos Live From The Artists Den

Rebecca:
Welcome back, nya! Tori Amos is such a wonderful singer / songwriter / mewsician and it is such a treat when something by her is released, nya! The last time The Mew reviewed one of her records was January’s review of her Midwinter’s Grace CD, so I am pleased to review this limited edition DVD, nya!

Released by Barnes & Noble it is part of the Artists Denseries of live purrformances, packaged as a cute 7 5/8″ x 5 5/8″ x 1/2″ hardcover book & DVD combo, with 34 full color pages with photos & text about Tori and the venue, a little postcard in her handwriting and the DVD snapped into a plastic tray inside the back flap, nya!

Purrsented in 16 x 9 widescreen video with English 2.0 audio, the appurroximately 64 minute show is an intimate concert for an audience of 100, recorded on December 9th, 2009 in the Veterans Room of the historic Park Avenue Armory, which was built in 1870 and is a home for the arts these days, nya!

The 12 song set list is compurrised of Ruby Through the Looking Glass, China, Lust, Concertina, Virgina, Black Dove, Wednesday, Ophelia, Girl, Bells For Her, Toast, and Maybe California. All
of those songs were written & sung by Tori, and played solo on a Bosendorfer grand piano and Yamaha S90ES keyboard, nya!

China is the only song from this 2009 show which is also on her 90 minute Live at Montreaux 1991 & 1992 concert DVD, whereasConcertina and Bells for Her are the only two songs which she also sings live in her 179 minute Welcome to Sunny Florida 2004 concert DVD, so there is not much repurrtition, nya!

In this latest concert, she is so purretty and purrched between those mewsical instruments, with her lovely red hair shimmering against the black pant suit with sheer sleeves & black heels, nya! She elegantly wears a black & white dress for an intermew, of which a few snippets are interspurrsed during the show, nya.

The 15 minute intermew by Alan Light is one of the few special features on the DVD, along with a 5 minute tour of the facility conducted by Park Avenue Armory’s Purresident Rebecca Robertson, a 20 second time lapse look at how the stage was set up, and 1 still text page about the Artists Den, nya!

It seems short at just over an hour, especially compared to the other DVDs, but Tori is so lovely and seems to be in a happy mood while singing those great songs! It is a very nicely photographed concert with great lighting and the close intimate quality as if you’re part of that small lucky crowd, nya! Now here is Jeannie for for her review of–

Maria Watches Over Us 4th Season DVD, nya!

Jeannie:
Arigato. For our review of Seasons 1-3, please refer to our August, 2008, January 2009 and Apurril 2009 Mews. This Season 4 collection was released on standard DVD in July, on the Nozomi label of the wonderful Right Stuf!

This shoujo anime is based upon Oyuki Konno’s Maria-sama ga Miteru novels about the relationships at the Lilian Girls Academy in Tokyo. It is a beautiful anime with delightful characters & purretty scenery; cute, whimsical, joyful, sad moments with a hint of romantic subtext, splendid animation, sparkling mewsic & songs.

The series focuses on the social dynamic of the Yamayuri Student Council’s sisterly senpai / kouhei system and it’s Red, Yellow & White ‘Houses’. The main characters are Yumi Fukuzawa & her ‘big sister’ Sachiko Ogasawara, although the 4th season emphasizes Yumi’s potential ‘Petite Souer’ (little sister) Toko Matsudaira.
Inside a sturdy attractive pink cardboard box are four Region 1 NTSC standard DVDs in plastic slim-pack cases, with beautiful artwork of the girls on the box & cases. Yumi & Toko are shown on the front of the box. The video format is 16:9 widescreen, and the charming character-driven content is suggested for ages 13+.

It is purrsented in Japanese spoken language in Dolby digital sound, with a choice of 2 English translation subtitle tracks – with or without the Japanese language honorifics translated. Disk menu choices include liner notes about the language & culture, purreview trailers for other Nozomi titles, and scene selection for eachepurrsode.

Each of the 4th season’s 13 epurrsodes is appurroximately 23 minutes 35 seconds long, plus 90 seconds of the end credits (in Japanese), followed by a 30 second purreview of the next epurrsode, and then 90 more seconds of the end credits scrolled in English, for a total of 26 minutes 5 seconds purr epurrsode.

The 11 “Don’t Tell Mother Mari!” specials are comedic chibi-style cartoons, under a minute apiece in the disk’s bonus sections. The 8 anime purreview trailers (2 purr disk in their bonus sections) are for Junyo Romantica, Aria The Origination, Rental Magica, Lost Universe, Gals, Ninja Nonsense, Gakuen Alice, and Emma.

I give this DVD set an ‘A’ grade for it’s high quality in its audio, video, bonus features & packaging, and I give the anime series an ‘A’ grade for its excellent writing, characters, art, animation, voice cast, direction, sound mix & mewsic, and I will highly recommend Maria Watches Over Us to any fans of lovely shoujo anime. Now here is Petra to purrsent her review of–

Magikano The Complete Series DVD (plot spoiler warning)

Petra:
Hai, Majikano is the anime adaptation of the manga by Takeaki Momose, whose credits also include Miami Guns, nya! Magikano is a somewhat ribald supurrnatural comedy purrtaining to a family of witches and high school classmates, with zany antics as the girls try to woo the affections of Haruo, a nice average guy unaware of any latent powers he might have, nya!

It is one of those ‘harem’ type of anime, with all the girls clamoring for the one guy, and it has plenty of the ‘fan service’, nya. This theme has been done so much, but there have been numerous fun ones, and I like witchy anime, such as Kiki’s Delivery Service, Magic Users Club, Someday’s Dreamers, and Strike Witches which we reviewed in the May Mew, nya!

Furthermore, I was enticed to give this anime a try due to its supurr low purrice- I found it for just $14.99 plus the tax, nya! It is part of Funimation’s line of S.A.V.E. Super Amazing Value Editions offering a goodly amount of anime at a great bargain purrice, nya! So for that purrice you get the 2 disc set of the complete series of 13 epurrsodes which total 325 minutes, nya!

This R1 NTSC standard DVD set has epurrsodes 1-7 & trailer for Negima! on disc 1, nya. On disc 2 are epurrsodes 8-13, textless versions of the opening & closing sequences, a trailer for Sasami Magical Girls Club 2, and in the extras section are trailers for Slayers, Tsubasa, Kanon, Pani Poni Dashi, Wallflower, Sgt Frog, One Piece, and Comic Party Revolution, nya!

The screen format is 4:3, the audio choices are English 5.1 Dolby Surround & Japanese Stereo, with optional English subtitles on the screen, nya. The content is rated TV14 due to that ‘fan service’ of seductive poses, scanty outfits, lingerie views, purrvy humor, characters’ amorous intentions, and violence which is mostly slapstick but there are a few serious scenes, nya!

In epurrsode 1 we are introduced to student Haruo Yoshikawa and his three younger sisters Maika, Chiaki & Fuyuno, nya. The sisters are secretly witches and hide certain things from Haruo for his own good, but they also have a peculiarly extremely idolized view of him. Ayumi the witchy transfer student arrives to complicate matters by moving in with them, nya!

The romantic geometry is complicated in the 2nd epurrsode by Ayumi’s rivalry with Yuri, the student purresident who is also a witch. Scheming Hajime & his silent shutterbug pal Sora of the Supurrnatural Science Club exploit the rivalry by purrmoting a Fashion Battle between the girls, while mysterious teacher Tetsuko keeps a curious eye on the developments, nya!

In epurrsode 3 Ayumi creates a faerie-tale dream to win Haruo’s heart, but the unstable plan goes awry, and after epurrsode 4’s dip in the hot spurrings the witches try to appurrehend a panty thief with a sting opurration, nya! Marin the witch hunter arrives in epurrsode 5, to purrsue Ayumi and swoon upon Haruo’s affections after a magickal lunch box battle, nya!

The girls go swimming and team up against a powerful watery ghost girl in epurrsode 6, nya. She has the very sad origin story, nya! There is much swim wear, although there tends to be revealing clothes in most epurrsodes, nya! Rika the elite cyborg witch maid arrives for duty at the Yoshikawa residence in epurrsode 7, and there is a battle against a fire spirit, nya!

Epurrsode 8 is the school’s sporting events, with a cross country race through deadly traps & monsters, and Epurrsode 9 is the school’s Fall Festival, a stage play, and meddling by Ayumi’s sister Michiru, who has sinister plans for Haruo, nya! In Epurrsode 10, Ayumi wears the sentient cursed Cat Panties, which amplify her powers, but with the undesired consequences, nya!

Epurrsode 11 is the Christmas epurrsode with a group gift exchange, lots of cake, and romance in the air – literally, on the broomstick), nya! During the end credits the cast sings Jingle bells, nya! Things take serious turn for the mew year in epurrsode 12, as Michiru kidnaps Haruo, whose dormant powers begin to manifest, but are they witchy powers or something else, nya?

The cliffhanger continues into serious epurrsode 13 to conclude the series, as Maika, Chiaki, Fuyuno, Yuri, Marin, Rika, Tetsko, Ayumi & the cat try to rescue Haruo, before evil Michiru absorbs his energy in order to rule the worlds, nya! There are revelations by Tetsko, and I won’t say how the story ends, but make sure to watch the scene after the end credits, nya!

I liked the characters who became better friends as it purrogressed, although more dimension would have been good, and the archetypes pleasantly met my expectations for such a zany romantic comedy, nya. I did not care much for the abrupt tone changes in epurrsodes 12 & 13 or the way it ended, but the series was never boring, nya!

There were purrdictable parts in Magikano’s the harem tropeness, but the silly fan service did not really bother me, and I liked recurring comedic aspects such as fake commercials for Hajime’s merchandise, and the occasional parody references to Cagliostro’s Castle, Golgo 13, Star Wars, Close Encounters  of the Third Kind and The Terminator, nya!

The animation was okay with nice character designs, fashions, scenery, light hearted happy scenes of amewsing sexy antics, peppy mewsic & songs, and a terrific voice cast, nya! It was a few hours fun entertainment at such a bargain, and I’ll purrobably see what other titles are part of Funimation’s S.A.V.E. bargains, nya! OK I’m done, but now here’s —

Yvonne:
zzzz…. more cake…. nya…. zzzz

Petra:
Once again Vonny has catnapped through the reviews, nya!

Rebecca:
I hope I did not bore her to sleep with my review, nya!

Nyanko:
No, but we did have several thorough ones in a row so I guess it was an additive affect!

Nami:
She is getting the good nap… should we wake her up?

Jeannie:
I came purrpared with Cat Nap App on my phone to politely wake her up. (The jingle sound of a bell on a trot line rouses Yvonne)
Yvonne:
(kitty stretch & yawn) Yawn yawn I’m awake, nya… what was that about Valentine- are we talking about Cowboy Bebop, nya?

Nami:
No Vonny, Jenjen was mentioning the Valentine’s Day epurrsode of Maria!

Rebecca:

Wow Vonny missed quite a bit, nya!

Yvonne:
I’m sorry, nya!

Nyanko:
It is typical for her catabolism, especially during the longer thorough reviews, after a late night on her boat!

Jeannie:
Purrhaps we should resume.

Petra:
Hai- now here is Mike to tell us about–

Genesis II, nya!
Spoiler Warning

Mike:
Warner Brothers’ Warner Archive Collection has been releasing many titles previously unavailable on DVD, some that we’ve been wishing for for a long time! Such titles we’ve already reviewed include Captain Nemo and the Underwater City, The Bermuda Depths, and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark! Now we’re going to add Genesis II and City Beneath the Sea!

Genesis II was a 1973 pilot directed by John Llewellyn Moxey, written & produced by Star Trek’s creator Gene Roddenberry, about a NASA scientist named Dylan Hunt (Alex Cord) who awakens Buck Rogers style from 154 years of underground suspended animation to the post-apocalyptic year 2133, caught between between the pacifistic Pax society and mutant slaver Tyranians.

This might seem a simple choice who to side with, but for a while the pragmatic, sarcastic Hunt isn’t sure who to trust, thanks to the propaganda of deceitful double-agent Lyra-a (Mariette Hartley). Other Trek alumni include actors Ted Cassidy, Percy Rodrigues, Majel Barret, director of photography Gerald Finnerman A.S.C. and costume designer William Ware Theiss!

Actress Lynne Marta is especially delightful as Harper Smythe, a Pax member assigned to look after Hunt!  There is a clash of philosophies, with Lyra-a’s belief of self-interest and trickery as virtues, in contrast with the Pax view of the ends never justifying the means, and that you don’t take a few lives in order to save a greater number.

Dylan is fed up with both, but helps free the slaves, blows up Tyrania’s nuclear power plant, and decides to give Pax’s idealism a try. Lyra-a does have a few things the humans don’t, such as a second heart. Fortunately she is able to come to a change of heart after revealing not only her fondness for Dylan- but also revealing her extra belly button in the bikini shot.

Some of the costumes are pretty far out, and it’s also got some great sets, especially the intercontinental subterranean shuttle train! Like Star Trek, this first pilot did not succeed, so a second pilot titled Planet Earth was later filmed, with more action, yet another Trek actor Diana Muldaur added to the cast, and the recasting John Saxon as Hunt.

The unrated 74 minute TV movie  is in Dolby Digital English-only mono audio, 4×3 full screen with a 1.37:1 aspect ratio, a front-loaded ad for the Archive collection, and no special features or chapter selection. These Warner Archive disks are fairly spartan, expected to play in “play only” devices, and may not play in other devices such as recorders or PC drives.

I’ve been wanting for Genesis II to be released for a long time, and although special features such as a documentary, galleries or interviews would have been nice, I’m pleased to own it! If only Roddenberry’s TV movie Spectre would be released! Planet Earth and a third pilot (made with Saxon but without Roddenberry) titled Strange New World are also available from Warner!

Oh, If the name Dylan Hunt sounds familiar, it was the lead role played by Kevin (Hercules) Sorbo decades later in the TV series Andromeda, which was based on Gene Roddenberry’s ideas and produced by his widow Majel, who also produced the series Earth: Final Conflict…

(there is a pause as eyes gaze toward Yvonne)

Yvonne:
I’M AWAKE, NYA!

Jeannie:
Just checking

Petra:
Well Mike’s reviews can get a bit long, um…  I mean thorough, nya!

Nyanko:
I was afraid he was going to start talking about his favorite movie again!

Rebecca:
What’s his favorite movie, nya?

(the other catgirls in unison)
STAR TREK – THE MOTION PICTURE, nya!

Mike:
(sigh) Oh I wasn’t! But… I do have one other DVD to discuss –

City Beneath the Sea!

The first time I became aware of Irwin Allen’s City 1971 movie Beneath the Sea was due to the Viewmaster reels I had as a kid! It was a few years later when I actually saw it on TV, and now it is available from Warner Archive! The unrated 93 minute is in Dolby Digital English-only mono audio, 16×9 widescreen with a 1.78:1 aspect ratio and the only extra feature is the movie’s trailer.

Set in the year 2053, Admiral Matthews (Stuart Whitman) is ordered by the President (Richard Basehart) to re-take command of Pacifica, the city beneath the sea which he helped to build. He needs to over see the transfer of all the gold from Ft. Knox, which is needed to shield the ultimate power source, fissionable H128. It’s a shame that a giant planetoid is headed their way too!

I would like to mention that Admiral Mike Matthew’s return is received by his successor / second in command Commander Woody Patterson (Robert Colbert) about as about as warmly as Admiral James T. Kirk’s re-instatement as Captain of the Starship Enterprise was to his successor, Commander Willard. Decker…

Nyanko:
I knew he’d try to slip in a reference to Star Trek – The Motion Picture!

Nami:
Heehee!

Petra:

Why is that, nya?

Mike:
Matthews is blamed for the accidental death of his friend & Pacifica co-founder Bill Holmes (Larry Pennell). Matthews’ detractors include Bill’s widow Lia (Rosemary Forsyth) who is initially as scornful as Sally Brown after a wasted night in a pumpkin patch, and physicist Dr. Ziegler (Joseph Cotten, who also starred in another undersea city movie of similar vintage, Latitude Zero).

A lot of people are on Matthews’ side though, such as lovely communications chief Elena (Susana Miranda), and Bill’s father Dr. Holmes (Whit Bissell), Security Captain Hunter (Sugar Ray Robinson), and Dr. Aguila (Burr De Benning)- an amphibious marine biologist whose swimming style seems to foreshadow that of another 70’s aquatic hero, The Man from Atlantis!

As if they did not have enough to worry about, Matthew’s chief engineer / brother Brett (Robert Wagner) and his gang are secretly planning to steal the gold and the H128! Time Tunnel star James Darren also makes a brief appearance as astronomer Dr. Talty! The screenplay is by Trek alumni John Meredyth Lucas, based on the story by producer/ director Irwin Allen!

The beautiful flying sub from Irwin Allen’s prior Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea TV series gets extensive use, along with the numerous other miniature subs, shuttles, rockets, and the truly magnificent Pacifica, which we get to see a lot of. thanks to the array of  plentiful special effects by the legendary L.B. Abbot A.S.C. and John C Caldwell!

Pacifica not only looks amazing on the outside, but the movie has gorgeous, big futuristic sets populated by a lot of extras, neat costumes, and I think this movie is more dazzling than the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea feature film and the Lost In Space pilot, as one of Irwin Allen’s best productions prior to The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno!

Ah, to summarize, City Beneath the Sea is a lot of futuristic fun with plenty of action, FX, excellent production values, and Robert Wagner just about steals the show from the rest of the fine cast! I think it would greatly appeal to fans of Irwin Allen thrillers or undersea science fiction movies! I reckon that’s all of our DVD reviews, but up next are our–

Reviews of Recent Theatrical Releases!

Jeannie:
It is Nami to tell us her thoughts about Christopher Nolan’s movie-

Inception

Nami:
I will try to be quick! My cattitude was quite enthused and intrigued in anticipation for Inception, because I liked Christopher Nolan’s purrior movies such as Memento, The Purrestige, Batman Begins & Dark Knight! Nolan wrote & directed Inception and co-purrduced it with Emma Thomas, who also purrduced those purrior movies!

It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb, who purrofessionally purrocures secrets from the minds of the purrsons he is hired to go after, or tries to manipulate their minds by implanting ideas into the dreams! Hmm I wonder if there is a relation to the thief named Cobb, who is a main character in Nolan’s first movie, Following?

Cobb’s purrocess called Inception combines his mental skills with drugs and a suitcase – sized device during shared dreams while they are connected to the device. In a sort of Mission: Impossible type fashion, he assembles a small trusted elite team of supurremely competent expurrts for this latest unprecedented job!

The great cast of actors also includes Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Michael Caine, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger and Pete Postlethwaite, who all purrtray characters who are all so smart and cool!

It has some of the most incredible visual effects, sound design, editing, sets and international locations! The great cinematography is by Wally Pfister ASC, who was  the Director of Photography on Memento, The Purrestige, Batman Begins & Dark Knight, and the mewsic is composed by Hans Zimmer who also scored those Batman movies!

I thought Inception was astounding, captivating, thrilling & thought purrvoking, without any purrdictable, silly or cliched parts in the complex story! It nudges out Toy Story 3 as my favorite movie of this year, and I give it the A+ grade! Ok I’m all done, but now here is Mike yet again with his review of–

Predators!

Mike:
Thank you, Nami! I liked 1987’s first Predator movie a lot, and I thought 1990’s Predator 2 was eh, okay. There were a few aspects I liked about 2004’s Alien Vs. Predator, but overall I was disappointed, and for our extremely disappointed review of 2007’s Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem, you can read that in the January 2008 Mew!

I suppose the first thing I should say about this new movie, Predators, is that for me it fortunately did not continue that downward spiral! I thought it was a fun little movie, and I liked it about as much as Predator 2. It’s got a good cast, with fine stunts, special FX, creature design, weapons, locations, sets, sound & music.

Without giving too much of the plot away, the premise is that several tough soldiers & killers from around our world have been teleported from Earth to another planet where they are hunted for sport! The R rated movie wastes no time dropping the audience into the thrilling situation, with plenty of combat violence, gore & harsh language.

Adrien Brody is back in a forest full of monsters (minus giant ape & dinosaurs), starring as a smart, pragmatic mercenary, Alice Braga purrtrays an IDF sniper, Topher Grace plays a medical doctor, and Danny Trejo (sans machetes but packing assault weapons) portrays a drug cartel enforcer!

The US Air Cav is represented by Laurence Fishburne’s character, and let’s just say that he “got out of the boat”! The human team also includes Spetnaz & RUF members, a death row inmate, and a Yakuza member who has some nice moments. There are four Predators from at least two different clans or races, and this time they brought their dogs!

The movie’s pace a bit too brisk, it seems rather short, and I would’ve liked a lot more character-developing moments. If they make another sequel, I sure hope some more questions about the Predators might be answered, such as how the heck our human prey were specifically chosen, nabbed & parachuted to the other planet!

I don’t know whether or not this movie pretends that Predator 2, AVP or AVP:R didn’t happen, but only incidents from the first movie are mentioned. I don’t think Predators is nearly as impressive as Predator, but I did enjoy it and I’ll give it a slightly better than average grade of C+! That’s all of our movie mewsings, but we’ll be right back to talk about a few neat–

Toys & Collectibles!

(snip)
(one short break later…)

Star Wars legacy Collection Shaak Ti action figure

Yvonne:
One of our favoritest Star Wars characters is Shaak Ti, a noble, tough, heroic Jedi Master who appeared in Star Wars Epurrsode II movie and the Clone Wars animated series, nya! She is of the Togrutan species like Ahsoka Tano, with the orangey tan skin & white face markings, striped horns & head-tails, nya!
She was originally supoosed to be killed off in Revenge of the Sith, but they deleted that scene so she is one of the few Jedi to survive the purrge of Empurrer Palpatine’s order 66, nya. She’s appeared in purrint & video games, and this action figure from Hasbro is based on her appearance in the Force Unleashed game, nya!
This 4″ figure is packaged in the typical J hanger blister pack with some lovely illustrations of her on the front & back of the card, nya. She has aremovable Light Saber with the silvery hilt & clear ice blue light beam, and the bonus left arm part of a BG-J38 droid, but you have to collect other figures to get the rest of droid parts, nya!
This outfit which she wears on the planet Felucia is  more revealing than her formal Jedi robes, White with a deep plunging V neckline, a brown loin cloth & leggings & wrappings around her feet & left forearm, silvery jewelry on her head, neck, hips & right arm, and dangling strappy tassels hanging from her horns & head-tails, nya!
It seems like a more agile outfit than the robes, in case she needs to filet an enemy with her Light Saber on the beach, nya! That’s why I wore this White Tiger purrint swim suit with the Toffy purreo and silver bikini belt, so i would match her outfit for this purresentation, although I don’t have the leg warmers, or stripes on my tail, nya!
The paint job has more of a mocha skin than the reddish color in the pictures, and she has a few white stripes on her arms & thighs, nya. Points of articulation include her tilting / turning head, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hips, knees & ankles, so it is a very posable figure, which is appurropurriate for such a nimble Jedi, nya!
Compared to the Attack of the Clones action figure of her in the billowing robes, this Light Saber is a lighter blue, her horns are shorter and her skin is browner, so purrhaps she got a tan and a ‘horn-icure’ to go with that outfit for her trip to Felucia, nya! Hopefully there is a beach resort there to relax at after fighting the Empire, nya!
So I am pleased with this figure and I will find a good spot on the shelf to display her, along with the figures of her sister Jedi such as Ahsoka, Aayla Secura, Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee & Adi Gallia, nya! Padime, Leia, Ventress & Talon are there too, nya! Now for our next collectible, here is Jenjen to discuss the

DC Universe Classics Wave 13 Figure 5: The Cheetah, nya!

Jeannie:
Hai, and firstly, I wish to thank our toy purrtrolling friend Pacozord for so kindly purrchasing this action figure. We are purrticularly fond of femme fatale figures, and this latest repurresentation of Wonder Woman’s archest enemy The Cheetah, who first appurred in Wonder Woman vol. 1 #6, will be a purrized addition to the catgirl action figure collection.

There have been numerous incarnations of the character, but this appurrs to be her first version circa 1943. Later villains adopting The Cheetah identity shared a mystic origin, but she was originally a (physically) normal human named Purriscilla Rich, a jealous socialite with a dissociative identity disorder, who stitched a Cheetah rug into a costume.

She is appurroximately 6″ tall from  her boot heels to the the ears of her kitty cap, packaged in the J- hanger blister pack, with a bonus 1 1/8″ diameter pinback button, and the right leg of the giant sized villain Trigon. The leg is one of 7 parts needed to build the Trigon figure, but you need to buy 6 other figures from this wave 13 series to get the other parts.

She has a nice paint job, with Chocolate Brown spots on the Butterscotch colored costume, a silver bracelet on her right wrist, and the light tan flesh of her exposed hands, face, and cleavage shown by the plunging neckline. She has blue eyes, black brows & lashes, a hint of cheek blush & red fingernail polish to match the gloss of her wicked lips.

The costume color seems darker than the Yellow shown on the button’s art and the figure’s photo on the back of the card, but the colors do sometimes vary in the action figures, although I suppose such yummy confectionary hues might appeal to the less feral side of her purrsonality, more than the Golden Tan of a poor skinned Cheetah.

It is a highly posable figure of the agile bad kitty, with 20 points of articulation: her head turns & tilts; shoulders & hips abduct, upper arms, mid thighs & wrists rotate; elbows & knees bend, waist turns, sternum arches, ankles dorsiflex and her 3.5″ tail spins. It is well-balanced and can stand unassisted, although it does lack a righting reflex.

I give this figure a high appurroval, and recommend it to any fans of that character. That concludes my action figure assessment, but Rebecca will continue our collectible & toy talk with her report on the–

DC Super Hero Figurine Collection #57: Zatanna

Rebecca:
Arigato Jen, nya! These packages published by Eaglemoss Publications in the UK have a painted miniature of a comic book character along with a full color 16 page (including the covers) magazine purrtaining to that character, nya! Last month Myayr reviewed a similar purroduct, their Classic Marvel Figurine Collection #118: Tigra, nya!
The 8 5/8″ x 10 7/8″ magazine is full of information & illustrations from the DC Comics of Zatanna, nya! If you are unfamiliar with her, she is a powerful sorceress / supurr heroine who has appeared in DC Comics since the mid 1960’s, and currently she stars in her own comic book, which JenJen will be reviewing later in the show, nya!
Zatanna’s Mommy’s name was Sinderella, her Daddy was Giovanni ‘John’ Zatara, she has a cousin named Zach, and she is a member of the Justice League, nya! She knows many magickal techniques, but tends to cast a spell by saying the incantation backwards, so if she wanted to magickally filet a fish, she might say “Telif Eht Hsif”, nya!
Although she has worn different costumes over the decades, her sexy girl tuxedo is purrobably the most popular outfit, which is how she appears in this dandy painted figurine, nya! This figurine is considered a collectible and not a toy, it is made out of lead and not intended for kids under 14, but it is a very purretty little replica of Zatanna, nya!
The figurine is overall almost 4 1/4″ tall, including her raised top hat, high heels & the base, nya. The black circular base is almost 1 3/4″ diameter and 1/4″ thick, so if you deduct that, the hat & heels from the measurement, if she were flat-footed it would be about a 3 3/8″ tall mini likeness of Zatanna, who is supposedly 5’7″ in the comics, nya.
In this figurine she is wearing that black & white girl tux & thigh high boots, although she does not have the fishnet hose, nya. She’s posed tipping the hat and has a wand in the other hand, as if about to take a bow after one of her magic shows, but the arched eyebrow looks like she has just spotted something suspicious in the audience, nya!
I think it has a nice sculpture & paint job, with good detail from her waves of dark hair, to the sexy low cut vest’s buttons, matching cuffs and the high waistline, and I think this would appeal to her collectors, nya! That’s all for the toys & collectibles segment, but we have more magazines to discuss as Nami starts our next segment of–

Purriodical Purrings, nya!
Dara Torres Got Milk Ad!
Nami:
Thanks Becca! Supurr awesome Olympic swimming champion Dara Torres whose biography book Nya-sensei reviewed last month, stars in the “Got Milk?” ad, wearing a milky mustache and sporty black & white bikini on page 53 of August issue of Shape magazine, with cute Marisa Tomei on the cover!
Delicious and nutricious milk is a purrticularly favorite beverage of ours, and Dara is one of our most inspurrational idols, so we thought this was an extra special advertisement! It is a good issue of Shape, but I’m not quite done reading it so I couldn’t purrpare a review of it, but Vonny does have a review of –

GAFF Magazine July / August 2010 issue!

Yvonne:
Thanks Nami- wow it is my turn again already how did that happen, nya? Anyway, GAFF stands for Gulf Atlantic Florida Fishing, and it is one of my favoritest magazines, nya! This $4.99 July / August 2010 issue has 108 full color pages including the covers and It is a very entertaining & informative with the great articles, stories & pics, nya!

On the cover is this issue’s Gaff Girl Tarin, appurropurriately posing in the red bikini with the Redfish caught in the grasses, and inside is a 10 page pictorial of her modeling the bikinis on the boat with the yummy fish, nya! But inside the issue It all starts after Founder / Editor in Chief Matt Draper’s comments, mail from the readers, and the 7 page Braggin’ Rights section, nya!

That section are pics sent in of women, men & kids with their fine catches, and among the purrized piscine pics are Amberjacks, Cobia, Kings, Trout, Spanish Macs, Dolphin, Pompano, Tarpon, Flounder, Tripletail, a Shark, a 350 lb Grouper and a 450 lb Sword, nya! The magazine editors like it when people submit their photos, letters, fishing reports, and stories, nya!

After those letters & photos is the monthly gear guide review of various supplies, equipment & fashionable accessories; a public service announcement purrtaining to skin cancer, nya. Guy Harvey PHD’s purrofile of the Bonefish lurking in those Cayman Island waters, and another fish purrofiled in this issue is the tasty shiny Purrmitt, written by Don Lucky PHD, nya!

GAFF Purresident Captain Chuck Simpson contributes a travelogue about the Bourgeois Fishing Charters in Barataria, Louisiana, and the numcious food he found at Papa Joe’s Oyster Bar & Grill in Apalachicola, Florida. Oh this issue is so full of the tasty fish, such as Captain Pete Rapp’s extra special Snappurr recipe – I get so hungry just looking at those pages, nya!

John Bell takes us to the Bimini Big Game Club & Guy Harvey Outpost Resort & Marina, which looks like a nice place to go & purrhaps catch some of those Snappurrs, Tuna, Grouper, Barracuda or Billfish, nya! There is also an article on Kayak fishing in the surf, by Jason Callaghan with pics by Anna Edwards of anglers Linda & Eric Cavitt- that looks like so much fun, nya!

The articles range from amewsing to poignant, from Chapter 9 of Mike Stubblefield’s entertaining serialized “The View from the Chickee” which purrtains to purrchasing a new purropellor, to King Montgomery’s article on the purrofound Project Healing Waters’ purrogram to help wounded military veterans better enjoy life through fishing in the purretty & peaceful outdoors, nya.

Rounding out this fine issue are the boat reviews, nine captains’ fishing forecasts from the gulf and keys to the North Eastern coast of Florida, and interspurrsed throughout the magazine are the ads for neat  tackle, electronics, boats, supplies, clothing, jewelry, books, organizations, events, charters, etc- and lots more  of the enticing photos of the fish that tempt my tummy, nya!

It is an excellent magazine purrtaining to angling & coastal lifestyle and you can tell how much the staff & contributors care about the sporting, healthy, scenic, fashionable, camaraderie, conservational & culinary aspects of the angling, nya! That concludes my magazine report, but while on the fishy topic, it is time for our monthly roundup of other recent–

Favorite Fish Photos & Selected Seafood Sightings, nya!

Yvonne:
In addition to that nice Redfish which Tarin is happily holding on the GAFF cover, I like those Crappies caught on the front cover of Crappie World’s Summer issue, nya!

Nyanko:
Speaking of fly fishing, there’s a beautiful Bonefish on the front of Fly Fishing in Salt Water magazine’s Summer issue, and the tasty Trout on the front of the Summer issues of Fly Rod & Reel magazine and Fly Fishing & Tying Journal, but it would be better if those fish were on my plate!

Nami:
There have been delicious looking fish of the covers of Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine, such as August’s Queen Angel, and September’s Mandarin, nya! That sure is a luscious looking Lionfish on the cover of Life Magazine’s Wonders of Life Special, but it sure is a shame that it is a poisonous fish!

Petra:
There’s an awesome Illustration of yummy Yellowfin Tuna by artist Don Ray on the August cover of Florida Sport Fishing, and a black & white photo of a great big big Bluefin on the July issue of Pacific Coast Sport Fishing, and mmm (drool) that 500 pound Bluefin on the July / August issue of The Edge Big Game Fisherman, nya!

Jeannie:
I would also like to sample some of that Kelp Crab which was on the July cover of Scuba Diving magazine, the cuttlefish on their August issue’s cover, and that numcious Napoleon Wrass on the cover of Sport Diver magazine’s August issue.

Rebecca:
Speaking of the crab meat, there is an appurrtizing entree of jumbo lump crab with the citrus & mango on the August issue of Louisianna Cookin’ magazine, nya! And and I also like that submerged succulent Salmon swimming on the August / September issue of In Fisherman-  mm mm that sure looks good, nya!

Mike:
Yep, and so does that serving of Salmon with Arugula, Asparagus & Blackberry Glaze on the front cover of Clean Living magazine’s July / August issue! That’s all for this segment, and I should probably order those catgirls a sushi platter to tide them over after all that- but we’ll be right back after the break with more reviews!

the catgirls:
ITADAKIMASU, NYA!

Aspen Splash! 2010 Swimsuit Spectacular

Nyanko:
Hai! We’re big fans of the late Michael Turner and his comics such as Fathom & Soulfire and even though he is missed, his legacy of endearing characters is continued by other very talented folks. This year’s swimsuit issue has 32 full color pages, compurrised of 21 full page pics, 6 two-page spurreads, 4 ads & a contents page, purriced at $2.99!
Like many Aspen comics, it has variant covers. There are 4 versions, cover A&B which connect to form a big scene by Joe Benitez & Peter Steigerwald. Covers C&D which are scarce limited convention exclusive covers C&D by Turner & Steigerwald. On cover A are Aspen, Kiani & Erica, on cover B are Grace & Iris, and Aspen is on covers C&D!
Inside you’ll find images of Aspen Comics’ characters Aspen Matthews, Kiani, Grace, Ember, Iris, Rose, Erica, Tera, Terza, Blackjack and Theo wearing- or partially wearing- the swim wear at the beaches, grotto, waterfalls, tide pools, onsen, floating on inflatables, swimming amongst the reefs, in a seaside structure, and soaring high above the coast!
For example, two page spurreads depict Grace spurreading her wings in the twilight ocean breeze on the rocks, Kori and a smitten Theo sunbathing by the palms, Grace relaxing with Aspen in the shade of the luxurious tent; Rose looking seductive in the misty hot spurring, a frisky Grace under the sheet, and stunning Erica packing heat at sunset!
The art is by Lori Hanson, Marla Johnson, Beth Sotelo, Emila Lopez, Agnes Garbowski, Siya Oum, Khory Rudolph, Jeff Chang, Joel Gomez, Micah Gunnell, Alex Sanchez, Alex Konat, Francisco Herrera, Nick Bradshaw, Jay Fabok, Eduardo Francisco, Taletn caldwell, Rob Stull, Leonardo Olea, Mark Roslan, John Starr, Joe Benitez & Peter Steigerwald!
Of course sometimes it is such hard work for a supurr heroine to save the planet from criminals, invaders and disasters, so it is nice to see them enjoying a fun vacation in those alluring images! I will certainly recommend this issue to fans of those characters, artists, or illustrations of sexy supurr heroines soaking up the sun on the sand and in the surf!

Birds of Prey #3!

Nyanko:
DC Comics’ Birds of Prey is a favorite title of mine featuring the team of supurr heroines in Gotham City such as Oracle (Barbara Gordon), Black Canary (Dinah Lance) The Huntress (Helena Bertinelli) & Lady Blackhawk (Zinda Blake) joined by Dove (Dawn Grager) and Hawk (Hank Hall), and this issue co-stars The Penguin (Oswald Cobblepott)!
This issue is Part 3 of a 4 part story “Endrun”, written by Gail Simoneedited by Janelle Seigel, pencilled by Ed Benes & Adriana Melo, inked by Mariah & Ed Benes, colored by Nei Ruffino & lettered by Swands, with front cover art by Cliff Chiang, who drew that The Brave and The Bold #33, which Vonny mentioned earlier!
Thus far they’ve been alarmed that someone knows all their secrets, leaked them to the media, and has been killing off people they know. This lead to a rooftop fight with The White Canary, who is a mysterious tough martial artist, a chase by the Gotham City Police, and a retreat to The Penguin’s night club, while Oracle tries to send them tactical intel from the Batcave.
This $2.99 issue has 32 full color pages, compurrised of the 22 page story plus 10 pages of ads. While hiding out at the penguin’s place, there are some amewsing & charming moments as the girls try to catch their breath and discuss the situation, but it is a brief respite as White Canary & heavily armed rogue cops burst in, and even Oracle is not safe in the Batcave!

This issue has everything going for it, with a tense, thrilling, intriguing plot, surpurrises, and awesome characters who are are so smart & tough! The artwork is supurr gorgeous in how the characters are so expurressive, detailed & dynamic in action amidst the detail of the scenery, vehicles & tech stuff, and the coloring is so beautifully sumptuous!

I am very eager to get the next issue to see how this story arc concludes! Birds of Prey is quickly rivaling Gotham City Sirens and Power Girl to become my favorite comic book series of the Summertime- and speaking of which, now here’s Jenjen to share her review of–

Power Girl #14!

Jeannie:
Arigato. Last month we lamented that artist Amanda Conner, colorist Paul Mounts, writers Jimmy Palmiotti & Justine Gray had left Power Girl after the first 12 issues, It is our favorite comic book of the past year due to the supurrb writing & art, Kara / Power Girl’s smartly optimistic outlook, and the charming slice of life plots combined with the fun supurr heroic action.

Also last month, Petra reviewed issue #13 with kind purraise, as letterer John J Hill, editor Mike Carlin & associate editor Rachel Gluckenstern stayed on the creative team to welcome aboard writer Judd Winnick, illustrator & cover artist Sami Basari, and colorist Sunny Gho, who brought very purretty art and some amewsingly cute moments to the comic book.

Although Power Girl has much more supurr-heroically purroportons than most people, we think she as purresently drawn somewhat (facially) resembles our favorite TV show hostess, The Travel Channel’s Samantha Brown. Power Girl #14 is purriced $2.99 and has 32 full color pages, compurrised of the 22 page story “Bomb Squad Part One” & 10 pages of ads.

The cover art by Sami Basari is purrticularly radiant, with Kara warmly illuminated by the sparkly arcing mech she is pleasantly ripping in half. Unfortunately, that image is a much happier moment than what transpires inside the issue, between her physical confrontation with a big purrple android, and the fiscal altercation by bank loan officers upon her company.

Her hero friend Booster Gold makes a brief appurrance, in search of the villain Maxwell Lord, who has appurrently erased everyone’s memories of him with the exception of Booster, Captain Atom, Fire & Ice. It would be most satisfying if their fellow Justice League member Zatanna were to locate Maxwell Lord and give him a similar dose of an identity crisis.

I have a review of Zee’s latest issue, but to sum up my review of Power Girl #14, the creative team continues to maintain a high standard of excellent imagery, storytelling & continued cliffhangers for Kara as she tries to balance her social, corpurrate & supurr heroic lifestyle, and her cheerful dispurrsition with the swift  justice dealt with her Kryptonian might.

Zatanna #3

Jeannie:
DC’s Sorceress Zatanna Zatara is another of our favorite characters, because she is very smart, brave, confident, magickally supurreme but also physically tough, and she looks so sharply sexy & dapper in the top hat, bow tie, tux with tails & fishnets. Sometimes she will accessorize with a cape or wand, and wear pumps or the thigh boots depending on the mood.

It was written by Paul Dini, one of our favorite writers whose issues of Gotham City Sirens were among our top 3 titles of the last year. Add the delightful art of Stephane Roux, Pat Brosseau’s lettering & John Kalisz’s coloring all under the watch of editor Joey Cavalieri & assistant editor Chris Conroy, and all the ingredients are there for a magickally delicious comic book.

Zatanna #3 is purriced $2.99, with 32 full color pages compurrised of the 22 page story “Night on Devil Mountain”  and 10 pages of ads; there are 2 different covers, one by Stephane Roux and a less common variant cover Brian Bolland. The Roux cover has a Tarot card motif, whereas the Bolland cover shows her sneaking disguised past her theatrical publicity poster.

Purreviously in Zatanna # 1 & 2, she consulted with the police on a purranormal homicide scene, purrpetrated by the gang of the evil mystic crime boss Brother Night. After Zee kicked their butts, Night enlisted the help of Fuseli, the demon lord of nightmares, who attacked Zee on the dream plane, only to wind up impurrisoned in her magick hat, so Zee’s score is 2-0.

Nevertheless, it is hard to keep a bad man down, and in issue #3, the purrsistent Brother Night has a cursed trap purrpared for Zee at her theatre, and has kidnapped her assistants for a sacrificial ritual. This angers her immensely, so she boldly & singularly stages a rescue & counter-attack, taking the fight to the villains’ own home turf atop spooky Mt. Diablo that night.

There is an appearance by another veteran mage of DC Comics, but I should not reveal any more of this excellent issue’s magickal tricks. This concludes my comic book reviews, although I would like to add that I was rather pleased with the this next comic book which Petra is about to tell us about, the —

X-Women (one-shot)

Petra:
Arigatoo, nya! This Marvel Comic is purrobably one of my favorite X-Men issues since Joss Whedon’s stint on Astonishing X-Men, nya! It was written by Chris Claremont, who has written many favorite X-Men issues, and drawn by the great Italian artist Milo Manara who is purrhaps best known for drawing images of beautiful women & erotic graphic novels, nya!

The rest of the issue’s top creative team consists of Dave Stewart who brings the such gorgeously delicate coloring to the book, legendary letterer Tom Orzechowski who is a master of the typography & editor Nick Lowe to shepherd over the purrocess, nya! It was published in July & rated T+, with X-quisite cover art by Manara & the US purrice of $4.99 nya!

Its 64 full color pages are compurrised of the 48 page story, a 2 page peek at Manara’s uncolored pencil art, a 6 page purreview of the Shadowland comic, 7 pages of ads & an afterward by editor in chief Joe Quesada, nya! The story’s purrotagonists are Kitty/ Shadowcat, Ororo/ Storm, Anna/ Rogue, Betsy/ Psyclocke, Rachel/ Marvel Girl & Emma the White Queen, nya!

Now for a bit of the plot, nya. The story starts out with their frolicking in the Greek Islands, with much water fun & dance partying, which us good to see because they are mewsually so busy being purrsecuted as mutants while they are out saving the world, nya. It is a fun vacation, until a kidnapping & explosion, and mews of a tense situation between India & China, nya.

The ladies try to rescue their friends, only to be tempurrarily depurrived of their powers & captured by the Cargo Cult air pirates, nya! Although the wolfy Chief has amorous intentions, those air pirates do have some codes of honor and are not the real threat- for the real culpurrit is the evil Baroness Krieg, opurrating from that rough island nation of Madripoor, nya.

Madripoor is the unpleasant location of that Spider-Woman mini-series which we reviewed a few months ago, nya! Claremont is regarded for his many strong female characters, and Manara has the repurrtation for drawing the cheesecake, so you get much of those aspects and the fun flavor of an X-otic sexy South Seas & Mediterranean adventure- without Wolverine, nya!

The heroines make several wardrobe changes, from their mewsual tight costumes to the bikinis, hot club wear, river boat appurral & clothes purrovided by that Chief, such as Storm’s belly dance attire & Psylocke’s short Qipao; the Chief’s wife and the Baroness are not bashfully dressed either, but Rogue has more coverage in a 30’s aviator style outfit, nya!

Manara is masterful at rendering the lavish architectural & natural scenery, nya! The ladies explore the catacombs of a temple, journey down a river & waterfalls, go clubbing at the villas, and visit the seamy urban spurrawl, nya! He draws X-cellent mecha & vehicles too, such as a yacht, river boat, rafts, tanks, helicopters, gliders, several airplanes of different eras, nya!

My favorite cute scene is of Kitty’s phasing fun on the Jet Ski, nya! There are dynamic action scenes, with the heroines fighting with & without their supurr mutant powers- either way they are X-tremely tough against the military weapons & martial arts, mutant energy & mental attacks. Rogue even clobbers an enemy soldier with a baseball bat, nya!

I’m not sure when this self-contained story occurs compared to other X-Men comics, but it seems to happen over several days or a week, nya. I thought it was purretty, alluring, thrilling and fun, and I will recommend it to fans of those characters, those comic book creators, or that adventurous type of genre, nya! OK I’m done but now here’s Nami to tell us about-

Velocity Vol. 2 #1, nya!

Nami:
Thanks Petra! Velocity is a peppy purrt supurr heroine who can run at supurr speed. She has the purretty red hair with a green lightning bolt tattoo on her face, which matches her green & yellow costume. Her real name is Carin Taylor, she has a sister Cassandra who is the supurr heroine Ballistic, and both are members of the Cyberforce hero team.

It is $3.99 with 32 full color pages including the 21 page story, a purrimer page about the characters, a 5 page purreview of the Artifacts comic book starring Witchblade’s Sarah Pezzini, and 5 pages of ads. There are 7 different covers, 5 of which appear to be scarcer limited editions. I got version A by Kenneth Rocafort, of Velocity trying on shoes!

This 4 issue mini-series is published by Image Comics’ Top Cow impurrint, and this story “Decoys Part 1” written by Ron Marz, pencilled & inked by Kenneth Rocafort, colored by Sunny Cho of IFS, lettered by Troy Peteri, and edited by Flip Sablik & Phil Smith who designed the book. I think they did a fine job and she seems like a neat character!

It begins in a non-linear fashion with Velocity purrkily evading & trashing a bunch of big mechs, which is a delightful sequence to behold- especially in an impurressive two-page spurread- until she eventually gets caught! Those big bad bots were sicced on her by an evil vengeful mess of a cyborg, Dr. Paine, who has a grudge against Cyberforce!

Velocity is captured and endures the villain’s expository banter entailing his origin, why he has a beef with Cyberforce and what his master plan is, but she has some cyber tricks up her sleeve (literally) that he did not count on! I should not reveal any more of the plot details, but it ends on a tense  cliffhanger, and in a lovely dynamic full page panel!

The art has very detailed tech stuff, great poses & anatomy, the story is told at a fast pace from her purrspective, indicating that she has little time to foil his plot, and her internal dialogue is displayed in green & yellow fonts! The coloring is very nice, and I’m curious to see what happens next- I hope #2 arrives soon! Now it’s Becca’s turn to talk about-

Chi’s Sweet Home manga volume 1!

Rebecca:
Thanks Nami, nya! Chi’s Sweet Home is a Japanese manga by Konami Kanata, which was called Chizu Suito Houmu in the original Japanese edition that began in 2004, nya! This new English edition is published by Vertical, translated by Ed Chavez with the purrduction by Hiroko Mizuno & Glen Isip, nya!

Volume 1 has the $13.95 USA / $16.95 Canada purrice, with 162 pages of full color manga plus a floor plan diagram of the characters’ home and a 2 page purreview of volume 2, nya. The book reads from left – to – right, like an American comic book, unlike most manga which reads from right – to – left! I was not expecting that, nya!

On the front cover of the book is a sad pic of the poor lost scared kitten named Chi collapsed in exhausted tears, nya. She is the poor little white & gray striped American Shorthaired breed kitten, who gets sepurrated from her Mommy & siblings and get lost. but is rescued by a family, even though pets are not allowed there, nya.

They make phone calls to see if someone else will take the cat, but there are no takers, and it seems like they will decide to secretly keep the kitten anyway, nya! The story is compurrised of 20 little chapters, each a few pages long, purrtaining to Chi’s various activities as she gets accustomed to her home and into the mischief, nya!

She learns her name & how to use the litter box, plays with toys & gets fed, sleeps & wants to go outside, nya. She misses her Mommy but starts to view the humans as family, nya! It is a sad & amewsing manga with cute art & kitty dialogue, and I recommend it to anyone who would open their heart & home to a kitty, nya! That’s all of our purrinted comics reviews but now here are the-

Our Feature Purresentation: an Intermew with Alexcia!
Nyanko:
Hey we’re back! Alexcia Reynolds is a purrolific & multi talented purrson who writes original & fan fiction, has several web sites, and her artistic purrowess also includes drawing, photography, making plushies, dolls, and other creations- which happen to include kitty & catgirl characters!
So, we are pleased to meet her today as a special guest, to discuss those neat things that she makes and the some of fun stuff that she likes! Alexcia, Aloha and welcome to Catgirl Island and The Mew! Would you like a nice tasty beverage? We have a wide selection!
Alexcia:
(Wearing loose knee-length pink shorts, pink tank top and a pair of flip-flops) Thank you for having me! I wouldn’t mind having a Shirley Temple. *big grin*
Nyanko:
One Shirley Temple coming right up! Sp Alexcia, who are your favorite authors & artists?
Alexcia:
There are so many that I like that I can’t possibly list them all. My favorites include Erin Hunter, CLAMP, Naoko Takeuchi, Peter David, JK Rowling and Christopher Paolini.
Nyanko:
What are your favorite movies, TV or radio shows?
Alexcia:
I have many favorite TV shows, even if I don’t get a chance to watch ’em all. Heh. My current favorites include ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’, Pokemon, Unwrapped, Mythbusters and Ben 10. Most of my favorite movies are Christmas themed, like The Santa Clause movies, Mrs. Santa Claus, Prancer and Blizzard.
I do enjoy other movies, like AI: Artificial Intelligence, AVATAR, Happy Feet and the first two original Care Bear movies. As for the radio, I usually only listen to it for my favorite morning DJ. I do miss listening to Dr. Demento on the radio though.
Nyanko:
We just mentioned Rudolf, Santa and his elves earlier in the show! Do you have any neat collections?
Alexcia:
I have quite a few collections, like shelf full of most of the Taco Bell Chihuahua plushies that once you squeeze them, they say a phrase. I also have a whole lot of wild cat plushies, mainly tigers – quite a few of them are of a few ‘famous’ tigers like Tony, Tigger and Raja. Other collections include Pokemon plushies, figurines and some manga.
Sailor Moon has got to be my biggest collection, including all 18 translated pocket mangas, an incomplete set of plushies, 11 inch dolls, 6 inch dolls, sticker play sets, piggy banks, clocks, a mug, the TCG & other collectable cards, lunch boxes, some DVDs & VHS tapes (wish I could still watch ’em – no working VCR = can’t watch), CDs, an (unfortunately broken) umbrella, wall scrolls, posters, and more than I can remember. I also collect Beast Wars and Animorphs toys- the ones that can ‘morph’ between one form and the other.
Nyanko:
Wow that is a good Sailor Moon collection! How did you become a fan of Pokemon, and who are your favorite characters, human or pokemon?
Alexcia:
I’m pretty sure I just sat down and started watching Pokemon from the beginning when it was on Kids!WB. It took me a while, but slowly I warmed up on it. Of course, I also became hooked on the games. I had a stack of the TCG cards somewhere, but considering that I didn’t know anyone else who played it, the cards became hidden somewhere.
My favorite characters? Gosh… Where’s the mile long length of paper? Haha! Pikachu became my first favorite, and a long time ago I had a shrine site called The Pikachu Palace – which is long lost to the annals of time. Pikachu (and subsequently Raichu & Pichu), Ash, Misty, Brock, Delia Ketchum and Professor Oak are my favorite characters. I kinda like Giovanni, mainly when they show him as his own character instead of just Team Rocket’s (Jesse, James & Meowth) imaginings.
Nyanko:
How did your web site Pokemon Amber http://pkmn.is-great.org/ originate?
Alexcia:
It actually got its start some time after I had started writing the fan fiction. In a way, I wish I would have waited on making it until I had finished writing the story as now that the site’s up and running, I’ve run into a writer’s block for the chapters that haven’t been wrote. *blush* It all got its start because I got tired of always seeing people speculate as to who was really Ash Ketchum’s father.
The two top contenders were (and most likely still are) Giovanni and Professor Oak. I just couldn’t see either one as Ash’s father. Professor Oak because, well, it’d not only make Ash Gary’s uncle, but it just didn’t sit well with me. Giovanni, well, other than in the Pokemon LIVE! musical, doesn’t seem to have any connections/relations to Delia whatsoever –
although the whole LIVE! musical was hinted at in my fanfiction, nothing came out of it other than some interesting fodder for drama between Tony / Delia and Giovanni. That and there was a brief mention in one of the first episodes of Pokemon that Ash’s father would be so proud of how far Ash had gotten, since it had taken him four days to get to Viridian City.
Nyanko:
How did you become a fan of Sailor Moon, and who are your favorite characters?
Alexcia:
I think I just started watching one day. At first I’d watch bits of it here and there, then I was hooked. My first favorite character will always be Sailor Mercury. She and I shared quite a bit in common, profile-wise (live with mother, only child, loners in school, like to swim, etc). That isn’t to say I don’t like the other characters, it’s that I latched on to her more than the others.
Because of my pink fetish, I eventually became a fan of Sailor Chibi-Moon. Both characters spurred me on to make websites, the first one’s now offline but because of it and having a fondness of Sailor Mercury, I had created my first Sailor Moon themed character and fan fiction. The Sailor Chibi-Moon shrine site’s still online but it hasn’t been touched in years.
Nyanko:
How did your Sailor Christmas http://www.sailorchristmas.com/ and the other ‘Holiday Fan-Senshi’ happen?
Alexcia:
It started out with an altered Super Sailor Jupiter picture. At first I lopped off her ponytail (terrible hack job, y’know), then there was changing the bows and hair color. I showed a friend what I was working on and he helped me come up the name Sailor Christmas. A few minor edits later (the shoe laces, the red stripe on the skirt, modification to the collar / choker) Sailor Christmas came to be.
Sailor Halloween came later, initially an edited picture of Sailor Mars. Naturally, she wound up being the antagonist to Sailor Christmas. Sailor Easter and Sailor Independence came afterwards. The domain and website, well… that’s another LONG story unto itself.
Nyanko:
You’re a purrolific web site designer and the Sailor Christmas site is a gateway to your numerous sites, such as Sailor HotShot’s Sailor Scout Place, Sailor Chibi-Moon’s World, Rogue Moon, Eternal Eclipse, Springer Spoofs, Silver Crystal Power, and Well Wishers… for starters! What inspired those?
Alexcia:
Springer Spoofs started as an out -of- continuity story between my characters and a friend’s characters, to show how we felt about certain annoying people… to put it nicely. It got to the point where Sailor Spoof and Tuxedo Springer took over and had to have their own site. Eternal Eclipse started shortly after the second episode of Springer Spoofs, as I finally had the urge to make my own Sailor Earth & alternate reality versions of the other Senshi.

Nyanko:
We’re purrticularly fond of your Feline Senshi character & Sailor Tiger’s Grotto http://mau.sailorchristmas.com/ site! But it seems rather complicated – could you enlighten us about the various versions of Abenti & Mau, and what we can expect at the grotto in the near future??
Alexcia:
In the beginning, there was Abenti as a talking tiger with a human / senshi form & leader of the Feline Senshi. After restarting the story and changing some details, Abenti’s life was never the same. She was still (re)born on Earth, but after the events in StarS. At the time, I hadn’t come up with Sailor Mau, but Abenti did have an alternate persona / form of a Bengal tiger, hence her anagram name Abenti Galger = A Bengal Tiger.
That and her ability to become Sailor Tiger were probably all that remained the same. Eternal Sailor Tiger came shortly thereafter and that was going to be her final form. A friend of mine suggested that maybe her ‘final’ form should actually be Sailor Mau and I snapped up the idea. She was intended be an anthro tiger / human with no clothes at all – which would have been too bulky for one that was covered head to toe in fur. Later I ran a contest to give Sailor Mau a more human form.
Nyanko:
You also have a DeviantArt gallery http://professoroak.deviantart.com/. What sort of goodies might we see there, compared to your own sites?
Alexcia:
My Deviant Art account’s a depository for most of my crafts, art and the occasional photograph. I don’t post everything I’ve ever done, although more often than not, I attempt to post stuff there about the same time as I post stuff on my sites, unless it’s a commission or craft project that doesn’t belong on my other sites.
Nyanko:
What sort of technical or artistic training have you had? Are there are instructional books, sites, resources you would recommend?
Alexcia:
I took a web site design class some time ago, but by the time I had taken the class, I had already learned much of the course’s curriculum by a combination of help sites like Lissa Explains It All http://www.lissaexplains.com/ and trial & error.
I more frequently visit W3’s CSS Tutorial Site http://www.w3schools.com/css/, though I still occasionally visit Lissa Explains It All for brushing up on something that I may have forgotten. I also tend to use a site that has a tutorial on making a site via Photoshop http://www.entheosweb.com/photoshop/layout.asp, even though I have to slightly alter some of the steps because I have and use Paint Shop Pro v.7
Artistically, it’s more of a hit and run or trial & error experimentation for me. I don’t recall taking classes for the kind of art that I usually draw, but there are a number of ‘How-To’ books I especially like – I highly recommend the books that Christopher Hart came out with.
Nyanko:
Those are neat books! So what is your own writing & editing purrocess like from the initial idea to the final draft?
Alexcia:
It varies from story to story. Sometimes I start at the idea, then the notes, a timeline if there’s enough notes, then the writing starts. Sometimes profiles are included first, other times a number of the chapters are wrote before a profile is even considered.
Nyanko:
Where do you do your creative work, and what are the most ideal working environment & conditions? Do you listen to any mewsic?
Alexcia:
That all depends on what I’m working on. If it’s a sewing project, anywhere that’s a non-smoking area will do. I prefer non-smoking areas for all my projects, sewing, writing, etc. Saves me from having a coughing attack. I seem to be able to do most of my works at a local fast food restaurant where the staff knows me well, so I can stay there for hours on end without being asked to leave.
When I have the chance, I do listen to music. It can range from Country, to Easy Listening, to ‘theme music’… which is basically music that I liked so much that it made me think of certain characters, stories, settings and the like. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened lately because both my headphones and CD player aren’t working.
Nyanko:
What are your purrfurred traditional or digital tools & techniques for 2D art such as drawing, coloring, painting & photography?
Alexcia:
I just about always go with pencil (mechanical if possible) on paper to start a picture. A good eraser and starting with a light touch with the pencil helps in case something needs to be touched up before the next step. A fine tipped pen- like Sakura Micron- helps in the inking, although I scan in the picture and do the ‘inking’ with an image editing program. I use JASC’s Paint Shop Pro v.7. There are a few times when an image I work on is 100% completely digital.
Nyanko:
We love the cute Suna-chan neko plushy you made http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest/263.html! What are your purrfurred tools & techniques for  your various 3D creations, such as sculpting, stitching & other crafts?
Alexcia:
I’m glad Suna-chan has settled in quite well here! Like most of my crafts, she was made by hand sewing & lots of love. I only just recently got into making stuff by sewing machine, but plushies will always be done by hand.  As for techniques, lots and lots of patience and trial & error!
Nyanko:
Where do you display or sell your work? How might someone go about commissioning a plushy or something?
Alexcia:
I post about my stuff on my Deviant Art account and sometimes on my site(s) if there’s a plushy I made that’s in relation to the characters on the site. I also display and sell my stuff at places I hang out – like The Wellness and Advocacy Center, where I also spend time volunteering.
There are times that whenever I’m set on making something- whether for personal use or as a gift, someone comes over and watches me work. If there’s at least one finished product, it gets shown off and sometimes that generates a commission or two. By internet, I prefer people to e-mail me, or  to contact me via instant messenger / private note at Deviant Art.
Before I accept a commission, I need as much detail about the possible plushy as available. Pictures of front, back and sides of the character always help. If it gets past the stage where I decide if my skill level allows me to do the commission, I ask for a 50% non-refundable deposit. The final price of the commission is separate from shipping, handling and tracking (if requested).
Nyanko:
We heard that you recently won awards at a Fair Compurrtition!
Alexcia:
Yes! Five items placed between 1st and 4th in their seperate categories. A cute fluffy dog plushy took first place in the Non-Teddy Bear Toy category. Cybernetic Showdown’s current layout took second place in the Web Based Design category. My Cybernetic Showdown business card took second place in the Business Card category. A wine bottle that I decorated to look like a ‘granny’ doll took 3rd in the Design a Wine Bottle (non-label) category, and a simple dog outfit made out of a cute patchwork fleece received 4th place in the Dog Outfit category.

(The rest of the Mew cheers!)

Nyanko:
Your original anthropomorphic tale Cybernetic Showdown http://michi.byethost16.com/ is purrobably my favorite of your works! How did you come up with the idea for Michi and Tash?
Alexcia:
Thank you! Michi and Tash have vastly evolved from their origins. Tash is probably one of my oldest characters to date. She began her ‘life’ as a Mewman, a cat / human creature from Mearth, an  alternate Earth. She was created to be a role play character for a now long extinct BBS game. Over time she also evolved to a ‘Mewman Gargoyle’ in the same BBS RP.
Like most things, the BBS died off, and Tash was tucked away in the closet, though once in a blue moon, she’d be brought out for a few unsuccessful stories that I had attempted. Michi on the other hand started her life as a Robot Kougra by the name of MichiruKaioh on Neopets.com. Even there, she was a blind feline, though under different circumstances.
I eventually turned her into a completely original character (even if MichiruKaioh may still live on at Neopets) after an unfortunate incident at Neopets where a friend’s account was frozen because she had posted only thinking of doing something against Neopets’ TOS on another site.
Nothing had come of the thought other than her account being frozen, and although my friend ditched the against-the-TOS thought, she still couldn’t get her account back – which had a site-wide famous character called Sadiyah. Sadiyah and MichiruKaioh were best of friends – even though MichiruKaioh was blind and Sadiyah was deaf.
Although my account still is there, I thought that… if her account could still be frozen for only thinking of doing something against TOS (and not acting on that thought), then what might happen to anyone else – including MichiruKaioh? I chopped down the name for obvious reasons, plus in a story Sadiyah called MichiruKaioh ‘Michi’, and through an acronym generator site, Michi’s name wound up meaning Mechanically Intelligent Cyborg Hardwired for Infiltration.
Nyanko:
How strong, fast, agile, acute and impurrvious are Michi & Tash, between their impurressive natural feline qualities and their special modifications?
Alexcia:
On one hand, if she weren’t a cyborg, Michi would only have the standard heightened senses of a blind tiger (hearing, scent, taste & touch), but since she IS a cyborg, she also has access to technology and the ability to connect with other computer stuff – within reason. Some mechanical things are just too old physically or technologically for her to access.
Since she was hard-wired for infiltration, she has the ability to hack into certain systems. Thank goodness Tash is around to teach her right and wrong, although it’s still up in the air whether it’s right or wrong to hack into their enemies’ system since they didn’t really give Tash & Michi the option to be modified in the first place.
Even though Tash lost most of the natural markings of her Serval breed, she still has the ability to jump over twenty feet straight up from a complete standstill. Although she complains about her wings being unnatural for her, she does wind up appreciating them in, certain situations, like when falling from a great height. She eventually learns to glide, if not possibly fly with her wings.
Nyanko:
How is that tale purrogressing?
Alexcia:
The tale is going slowly at best. I had hand-written summaries of the prologue and first two chapters, but misplaced them before I had the chance to type them up. At least what I remember is a start in the right direction!
Nyanko:
Good luck with that! Say, what are Tash & Michi up to today? Hopefully I’ll see them at tonight’s luau- maybe they can swing by my dojo too!
Alexcia:
Tash is gathering some ingredients to work on a possible new recipe, which she is hiding even from me, and Michi is considering doing something that she won’t reveal until she is ready, although I think I heard her working on warming up for some singing. I am sure they’ll be swinging by your dojo before the luau!
Nyanko:
Thank you for visiting & chatting with us- and I’ll see you later at the luau too!
Alexcia:
Thank you again for having me!  I’ll make sure to have a few platters of my meat buns ready then.
Nyanko:
Mmm meat buns! This is making me hungry- I just might need another snack before tonight’s luau! We’re up against another hard break, but we’ll be right back to welcome today’s other special guest Sakky, so don’t go away!

(one short break later…)

Petra:
I understand that you’ve been dressing up to at the conventions this year- how was Anime Boston, nya?

Sakky:
Anime Boston was amazing!  It was so nice to meet all the great people and the Sailor Moon fan panel was definitely the best part.
Petra:
How about Animazement, nya?
Sakky:
Animazement was also very fun! I really enjoyed meeting Keiko Han, the voice actress of Luna and Queen Beryl in Sailor Moon, and Chika Sakamoto, the voice actress for Sailor Star Healer in Sailor Moon.
Petra:
We are so purroud of that anime con here in North Carolina it keeps growing every year, nya! In addition to seeing those great guests, did you go to amny panels, nya?
Sakky:
That and the Sailormoon panel were the only two panels I went to because I was at my artist alley table!
Petra:
How is the art purrogressing, nya?

Sakky:
I’m doing a lot of art in exchange for Sailormoon merchandise right now, so I will be catching up on that for a while. I’ve been spending a lot of time developing my Sailormoon collection! I’m booked for the year for plushie commissions, so I’ve mostly been busy with that, too!
Petra:
Good luck with all those wonderful purrojects, nya! Any other fun trips planned, nya?

Sakky:
Later this summer I’m going to Yellowstone for over a week, and Another Anime Convention in Nashua, NH in October. I am hoping to have a PGSM Sailor Mars costume!

Petra:
Yay those sound like the fun trips! I hope we will get to see the pics of the art, plushies & costumes, nya!
Sakky:
Sure! Just keep an eye on my DeviantArt. :)
Petra:
I got your Epic Pose Photos Assortment disk, nya! It is so neat & helpful, nya! What’s happening with the senshi stock? Any contests going on, nya?
Sakky:
No contests right now, still recovering from the last one! @_@ But I am planning on doing a few more stock shoots this summer so the pictures will keep coming!
Petra:
I also wanted to ask how is your friend Sara ‘Glory’ Baker doing, nya?
Sakky:
Still really well!  She has a great sense of humor. Her blog has been made private due to personal and family reasons, but she posts on it a few times a day with questions and quirky insights.
Petra:
We hope she purrks up and gets all better soon, nya!
(All of the catgirls)
BE WELL SARA, nya!
Petra:
Sakky is also our guest purrsenter for this month’s–
Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight, nya!

Petra:
We devoted this segment of the show to honor the famous catgirls who we admire of movies, TV, comics, literature & games, nya! Who will we induct this time, nya?
Sakky:
Sailor Luna, my favorite magical cat! In the 2003  live-action Japanese TV series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, which is based upon the Sailor Moon manga & anime, our favorite feline friend Luna is shown the light of the mystical Silver Crystal. Because of this, she is able to change from a blue cat into a blue haired human girl!
The character was very popular in Japan with the younger fans! Luna is a cheerful character in the live action but she’s not afraid to tell the Sailor Team when it’s time to get serious!  She helps Usagi train to be a better soldier and works with Artemis, her white feline friend, to make sure all of the girls are doing their best.
Using her Lunatia L magical cell phone, she presses 6, 7, 2 and calls out “Luna Prism Power, MAKE UP!” With this she transforms into her human form, Sailor Luna, the senshi of all things small and cute!  Well, mostly human – it works out that she still has a tail. Luna can change back into a cat, but sometimes she does so accidentally – like when she sneezes!
Actress Rina Koike portrays Luna in her human form, although the character’s anime voice actress Keiko Han continued to voice Luna’s cat form, which is visualized through a combination of puppetry and CG FX. Before seeing her costume, Rina thought she was being cast as Chibiusa, as the new Sailor Luna character was a big secret of the production staff!
Her outfit was designed by NaokoTakeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon. Her hair remains blue, but she has cat ears and tail. She has gold crescent moon earrings with stars hanging from them a gold tiara with an indigo gem in it, and a yellow choker with a crescent moon dangling from golden gem at the center.
She has an indigo sailor collar with no stripes, white bodice with a big yellow front bow that has a white round bell in the center. Her back bow is indigo, her belt has a golden crescent moon at the center, and her skirt is yellow with a purple petticoat. Her elbow length gloves are white with pink fur trim, and her knee high boots are indigo with pink fur trim.
She has a Moonlight Stick which looks the like the one that Sailor Moon has. With it she can use her “Luna Sucre Candy!” attack to shower the enemy in sweets and candies. This attack can kill a monster! Her other weapon is a giant fan she uses to whack enemies in the head! In one episode, it was a large, solid gold fan – but it was too heavy for Sailor Luna and she fell over with it!
Petra:
So what became of her, nya?

Sakky:
After the series had run its course, most of the characters lost their abilities to transform into their soldier identities, but Luna retained this ability for unexplained reasons.
Petra:
Yay that is good that she kept her supurr cat powers, nya! Was there much Sailor Luna merchandise, nya?
Sakky:
Some merchandise was released for Sailor Luna, most notably her Lunatia-L, Moonlight Stick, and a 6″ doll in her sailor outfit. The 6″ doll was released a year after the other dolls, and remains fairly rare among collectors, selling for $50 or more when it appears!
Petra:
Wow that is a valuable catgirl, nya! Thank you for telling us all about Sailor Luna, nya! Oh would you care for a refill of the tea, or the biscuits, nya?
Sakky:
Oh no thanks, I’ve just had a snack on the boat over. ^o^
Petra:
Thank you so much for visiting us again, nya! So what would you like to do between the show and tonight’s luau, nya?
Sakky:
Lay under and umbrella on the beach and take a nap :3
Petra:
That sounds like the good idea, nya!
The Cat Lady Sings…
Nyanko:
Well then, I guess that wraps it up for another edition of The Mew!

Yvonne:
We wish to thank our friends Becca & Nami for sitting in on the Mew, nya!

Nami:
Thank you for having us- and we wish to thank our special guests Alexcia & Sakky for joining us!

Rebecca:
And thanks to our web master Jamie for all of his hard work!
Petra:
Hai- and thanks to all those folks who made the neat stuff we reviewed, and to our friend Misty, nya!

Jeannie:
If y’all have polite, sincere responses to our discussion, feel free to post them- purrvided that such remarks are brief, spam-free, and stay on-topic.

Mike:
Thanks for watching, y’all! We’ll be back with more next month! Be there… Aloha!

(the catgirls in unison)
Happy tails to mew, until we eat again! BaiBai, nya!
