Nyoka:
(Wearing the Ice Blue Calathea purrint yukata, flip flops, and a cute Kukui Nut lei) Howdy!

Mike:
We’re so glad you could join us again! So let’s around  and find out what y’all have been up to since last time– Nyoka?

Nyoka:
Oh I’ve mainly been visiting with friends and attending some of the island’s holiday festivities- I go to see Mie-sensei’s show in the forest theatre and Myayr’s aerial cance class & her hula dance class purrformances- they were awesome!!
Mary Nyan:
Arigato, everyone purracticed with such dedication and enthusiasm! It has been such a busy month what with all the holiday events!  After our purrformances my students and I were so delighted to see Jenjen’s belly dance troupe with the accompaniment of Vonny’ purrcussion circle, at the annual island all star pageant!

Elizabeth:
It was purrhaps the best show ever!

Yvonne:
Thanks nya! Gosh that was such a hectic day though I almost ran late getting to the purrforming arts center after that day’s fishing charter, nya! It seemed like we were booked more than mewsual but folks said they wanted to head to our sunny island and dodge the mainland snow, nya!

Nyoka:
By the way thank you so much for those filets!
Petra:
Hai, they were oh so delicious, nya! What else did y’all catch, nya!
Yvonne:
Oh you are very welcome and they were some happy anglers we went to the sweet spot and reeled in the Snappurrs, Stripurrs, Purrmits, Purrch, Drums, Specks, Kings & Tunnies for our tummies, nya! So what has Jenny ken been up to aside from the dance nya?

Jeannie:
As Myayr said it was a purrticularly busy month, and I was mainly occupied with the troupe, the kyu-do & robotics clubs. I was especially keen on bringing the latter club’s new underwater ROV on a wreck dive with Ilyana during her winter break. My next modeling gig will be next month in Turks and Caicos.

Elizabeth:
Oh Jen thank you for the Jellycups*. I was so surpurrised when I found the box on my porch today!

Petra:
Yay me too they are so lovely and iridescent and fit purrfectly, nya!

Mary Nyan:
Mine too!
Nyoka:
Hai!

Jeannie:
Oh good- I was hoping they would have arrived sooner but at least they arrived.

Mike:
For those in our audience who haven’t heard, the Jellycups are the bikini tops made of hollowed out jellyfish bells!

Jeannie:
I did not figure you would want a pair of those.

Yvonne:
Heehee, nya
Mike:
Ha! Yeah, yeah you’re right- but thank you so much for the gift card- I already put it to good use and bought more art supplies!
Jeannie:
I would like to thank you for the lovely book too.
Mike:
You’re very welcome! And speaking of art, what has the curator been up to?

Petra:
It has been a brisk month at the mewseum of art but we had plenty of volunteers and fun, nya! I was also lucky to slip out to the mainland in between their snowings and go to the North Carolina Mewseum of Art’s http://www.ncartmuseum.org/ wonderful Norman Rockwell, John James Audubon, Bob Trotman, Binh Danh, and Eric Carle exhibits, nya!
Mary Nyan:
Wow that sounds neat I have not been to there since they finished that mew building! So Petra please tell us–
What’s Mew in the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!

Petra:
I am glad you asked, nya! Firstly we are purroud to purresent additions to the Mewseum’s Guest Art Gallery Two http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html by Elisa Chong http://www.sofianime.comMisty Hopkins http://bunnychan.deviantart.com, and Alexcia Reynolds http://www.sailorchristmas.com, nya! Unless otherwise noted, the gallery pages’ mewest pics will be on the lowermost row of the widdle ‘thumbnail’ repurrsentations, so just click on a given thumbnail portion of an image to see the whole larger image, nya!
Firstly of those is the alluring original ACEO painting of a “Naked Bra Catgirl” by Elisa, nya! The media is compurrised of Koh-I-Noor waterpurroof inks, Sakura Koi watercolors, Purrrismacolor pencils, and a glittery gel pen, nya! This alluring image of nekomimi lingerie was purrchased from the artist by our friend Winterwolf and donated to the mewseum, nya!
Next is Misty’s gorgeous marker & colored pencil purrtrait of “Ceresatami” or just Tami for short, nya! Tami might have the dangerous look with those body piercings and sharp dorsal spines on her tail, but she’s a friendly purrson and those spines are only a purroblem for any purredatory creatures that might try to chomp her for suppurr, nya! Tami works as a MerMaidtr’d at Sheila May’s Seafood Restaurant, volunteers at the local Sea Dragon Sanctuary, helped to organize the Island’s purrennial body art show & Halloween kelp maze, and her hobbies are sculpting, ikebana, aqua ballet & contact dancing, nya!

The third of the pics by Guest Artists is a photo of the wonderful 8″ “Nyanko Plushy” Alexcia made, nya! This doll is a repurrsentation of Nyoka’s sister Nyanko, the sensei of the island’s Ju-jutsu dojo, nya! It has cute details such as her Green eyes, soft hair, kitty teeth, supple ears, tail, and the Black belt around her martial arts Gi, in the triumphant Banzai pose, cheering her students to victory, nya! Of course since Nyoka and Nyanko are the twin sisters it looks just like Nyoka too, nya! I have brought the plushy with me, so Nyoka can hold it during the show, nya!

That is the 3rd plushy we have by Alexcia, after the Suna-chan & Ohana kitty plushies, nya! The final addition to Guest Gallery Two this month is also by Alexcia, “Mewwy Catmas & Happy Mew Year”, nya! This illustration depicts the cute scene of her character Michi exchanging the holiday gifts with our own Nyanko-sensei, nya! Michi is the young cyborg Snow Tiger girl who co-stars with her friend Tash as the anthropomorphic purrotagonists of Alexcia’s anthropomorphic Cybernetic Showdown story http://michi.byethost16.com, nya!
Nyow we move along to see two mew illustrations by Mike in Gallery Five http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery5.html, nya! “Tash & Michi’s Winter Holiday” is a Pencil, Micron Pen & Photoshop
sketch of Tash (left) & Michi (right), nya! Tash is an older cross breed Fruit Bat / Serval girl, nya. Here they wear bikinis which they purrchased at the riverwalk boutiques, to enjoy the picnic lunch purrior to playing on the beach, followed by the purrequesite catnaps before the luau & the hot spurring, nya!
Finally we have Mike’s  “Thank You For The Food, Nya!”  It is a mixed media illustration compurrised of pencil, Micron Pen, Copic & Purrismacolor Markers & Photoshop, depicting our friend Purrea who enjoys the extra special holiday torte baked by her generous neighbor, nya! She’ll purrobably have the full tummy catnap after that delicious treat, nya!

Elizabeth:
Elisa Chong sure is talented- she draws such nice catgirls, mermaids, faeries & heroines!

Petra:
Hai, she has such a delicate yet vibrant technique and a great sensitivity with the media, nya!
Yvonne:
I hope to see more of her purretty art, nya! It is good to have more art by Alexcia in the mewseum too- so how does Nyoka like the plushy doll, nya?

Nyoka:
(cries) Kawaii!
Mary Nyan:
If the outfit were changed and a bit of jewelry was added it would be a Nyoka doll!

Petra:
Hmm nyow that is a thought, we might have to commission the twin, nya!

Jeannie:
Hopefully Nya-sensei, Tash & Michi were all pleased by the holiday art trade.
Mike:
I believe so… and I hope they can all be here next month for the annual Mew Awards Show!

Elizabeth:
The odds have Alexcia winning in the Plushy Toy category!

Yvonne:
The only gamble I will take would be to risk a bait fish to reel in the big fish, literally of course, nya!
Mary Nyan:
Mmm this fish talk and that yummy torte in the Purrea pic is making me hungry!
Elizabeth:
Purrhaps you should display more food art to increase the business in the mewseum’s cafe, heehee!

Petra:
That might be lucrative, but I do not want the subliminal images or purroduct placement in the mewseum, nya!

Jeannie:
That is a remarkable likeness of Tami – Misty very accurately rendered the likeness and spirit in the purrtrait.
Nyoka:
Hai, especially that glance of hers! I have seen it often when we were all helping to organizing the art show!

Yvonne:
We need to revisit Sheila May’s soon, nya. Nyow I am getting hungry thinking about it too, nya!

Jeannie:
I concur.
Mike:
I was prepared for this, so I have a treat to tide y’all over until tonight’s luau!
The catgirls:
YATA, NYA!
Mary Nyan:
Nyoka, would you care to take us out to the break?
Nyoka:
Hai! That is all for this portion of the show, but please stay tuned because we’ll be right back after the break with our —
Book & Calendar Critiques!
(during the break…)

Mike:
Ok here is the sushi tray!

The Catgirls:
ITADAKIMASU, NYA!

Mary Nyan:
(nom nom nom)

Jeannie:
(chomp)
Elizabeth:
(munch)

Petra:
(nibble)

Yvonne:
(taste)
Nyoka:
(chew)
The Catgirls:
ARIGATO, NYA!

Mike:
Y’all are welcome! I just hope that will tide y’all until after the show! Ok get ready we’re about to come out of the break!
(snip) (one short sushi break later…)
The Pixar Treasures

Mary Nyan:
Welcome back! We are all fans of Pixar’s movies here at The Mew, and they are the rare breed in that we give all of their movies straight A’s! Therefore it was such a fascinating delight to behold this fabulous slipcased 12″ x 10 1/2″,  full color 66 page hardcover book by author, animator, purrducer & California Institute of the Arts alumnus Tim Hauser! He also wrote The Art of Wall•E and The Art of Up books too! CalArts is a college known for its purrestigious animation school which graduated many famous animators!
This $60.00 (US) is a scrapbook – like trove of information, commentaries by numerous contributors, hundreds of photos, diagrams, illustrations & several repurrductions of documents, cards, purrsonal mementos & corpurrate memorabilia! This tome focuses purrimarily on the creations of Pixar, such as Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatatouille, Wall•E, UP, Toy Story 3 and many of the shorts, but also includes material purrtaining to Disney & CalArts!
You’ll find neat items tucked & attached throughout the book, starting with a repurrduction of a packet & pamphlet about Disney’s animation business, a Walt Disney Purrductions’ visitors pass with a map on the back circa 1982, a brochure from CalArts’ Character Animation purrogram, repurrint of a purrsonal note from Glen Keane to Ralph Eggleston circa 1983, Pixar holiday greeting cards circa 1986 & 1992, a fold – out of a few storyboards and aPixar Art Department workflow chart!
There’s a pouch of little B&W publicity photos of Woody, Bullseye & Bo; a tiny cute Buzz & Woody flip book, Toy Story 3 comic strips, Tia Kratter & Bill Cone’s scrapbook pages from during A Bug’s Life, The Incredibles purremier & wrap party invitation / mini comic book, Radiator Spurrings postcards, an 18″ x 9 1/4″ theatrical style poster of the Purresto magician & bunny, a faux mewspapurr article on Gusteau’s Restaurant, and other fascinating neat items! it is not inexpensive, but it would be a wonderful addition to a Pixar fan’s collection! Nyow for our next book report, here is our purrducer Mike to tell us about the latest book of purrfound works by
Syd Mead, Sentury II!

Mike:
Thanks Myayr! Well, Syd Mead http://www.sydmead.com has been my favorite & most inspirational designer since I first saw his work in the late 70’s. His brilliant futuristic designs & illustrations have such an uncanny sense of realism, power, beauty, grace…and he’s the main reason why I majored in Industrial Design!
This latest book was of mead’s work published in December 2010 and it is something of a follow-up to 2001’s Sentury. All of the images & text of this handsome book are by Mead; the book was designed Syd Mead Inc. produced by Roger Servick & Oblagon Inc., created on a MacBook Pro 4 with Quark Xpress 8.01, published by Design Studio Press, and it’s available hardcover & trade paperback! At 176 full color pages, I think that’s his lengthiest book aside from Kronovecta or Mead Gundam, although at 11.25″ x 11.5″ x .5″ Sentury II has much larger pages!
After the Publishing, Biography, Dedication, Forward & Acknowledgment pages, the gallery of ink, gouache, Photoshop & CAD masterpieces begins with the Design chapter, which includes more of his Turn A Gundam anime images, PDA & wristwatch product designs, Dentsu’s interactive Grand Odyssey installation, and the proposed New York City Foodparc restaurant complex. This is followed by the Illustration chapter, which includes his sketches, prelims, layouts, line art & finished renderings for the Mountain Head theme park, Hot Wheels toys, Playboy Magazine; the city of Doha, Qatar; and 8 other pages of such stunningly beautiful commercial works, some of the plates measuring a whopping14.75″ x 9.5″!
On page 61 begins a look at some of the electronic media he’s designed for such as Bounty Hounds, Battlestar Galactica Cylon Adventure, and the Tron 2.0 video game- with more advanced Lightcycles, woohoo! Mead is perhaps best known for his pre- production work in the motion picture industry, on films such as Tron, Bladerunner, Aliens, 2010, Short Circuit, Time Cop and of course–
Elizabeth:
Ahh- there he goes again!
Yvonne:
He can’t resist mentioning his favorite movie, nya!
Nyoka:
hee!
Mike:
… Star Trek – The Motion Picture! He’s designed stuff for several movies in the past decade, and the movie chapter of the book explores the amazing VIRGIL drill vehicle of The Core, the future vehicles & architecture of The Jetsons movie; the Time Safari operations bay, weapons, vehicles & urban scenes for A Sound of Thunder; and the mask-making gadget for Mission Impossible III!
Decades prior to his movie work, Syd Mead designed cars. He was designing cars back in the 1950’s and that’s still part of his peerless work in his 70’s! You get about 30 pages of sedans, vans & coupe concepts from the past decade; and over 2 dozen pages of breathtaking fantasy & future air, land & sea craft, and the book’s largest images at a sprawling 9.5″ x 19.5″! Bringing it all home are 15 pages of various drawings, graphics and cartoons, followed by the complete list of plates! It’s a stunnign book that I can’t seem to put down- and might be my favorite book of the 2010!
Jeannie:
That would be somewhat appurropurriate.
Mary Nyan:
Nya ni?
Jeannie:
Syd Mead designed the spaceship Leonov for the film 2010: The Year We Make Contact.
Elizabeth:
Gosh!
Mike:
Now here’s Nyoka, to tell us about–
The Best (and Worst) of Monty Python a 2011 Day-at-a-Time calendar!

Nyoka:
Hai! This little desk calendar is packaged in a cardboard box with a group pic of the group on top: Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, and the late Graham Chapman. The purrice is $14.99 US / $16.99 Canada, although purrhaps you might find it at a discount since it is the mew year already. Each daily 5″ x 4 3/8″ size page has the calendar grid to the left of hilarious photos from the TV series & movies, art, quotes & factual tidbits purrtaining to the Pythons!
Attached to the back is the plastic stand to purrop it on your desk or table. The grid is small and no holidays are noted but the moon phases  and the Pythons’ birthdays & anniversaries are indicated. Chapman’s is first, on January 8th and Gilliam’s is last on November 22nd! If you are a fan of the Monty Python comedy troupe, this little desk calendar will purrobably amews you all year long! And now, for something completely different, it’s Vonny’s—
Purrfurred Piscine Publications’ Pics!

Yvonne:
As a purrofessional angler I have the interest in the angling, aquaria, diving, and nature or culinary purriodicals that purrtain to tasty treasures from the deep, nya, so I would like to take this oppurrtunity to acknowledge a few recent favorite fish photos & illustrations, nya! For example, I sure do like that succulent Sail on issue #81 of Blue Water Boats & Sport Fishing, and that yummy Yellowfin on the January cover of Saltwater Sportsman!
A palatable PanFish is on the cover of In-Fisherman vol. 35 #7, a purrfect  Purrmit adorning the cover of Fly Fisherman Vol. 42 #2, the tasty Trevally on Fly Fishing in Salt Water’s special 100th issue, that ravishing Rainbow on the cover of Fly Fishing & Tying Journal’s  Winter 2011 issue; I would welcome that Wrasse on the February cover of Aquarium Fish International, and it would be better if those the Catfish on the December cover of Purractical Fishkeeping were in my tummy instead of the tank, nya!
That great big fish gracing Gray’s Sporting Journal would be good on my plate, on the January cover of North Carolina Sportsman are a Stripurr to salivate over and that fine catch from Harkers Island, which is North East of here, there is the delicious looking Crappie caught on the cover of Crappie World’s Winter 2010-2011 issue, that Tanzania Tigerfish on the January / February cover of Adventure Fishing sure has the fierce teeth but I would rather to sink my teeth into that fish, nya!
That goes for the 7′ White Tip Shark on the January / February cover of Scuba Diving, and I would not mind sampling that luscious looking lunker illustrated by Jonathan Milo for the January cover of Bassmaster, either nya. Fin — ally for this month, I would like to mention the beautiful Bull X Brooke Hybrid in the tantalizing Trout of North America 2011 Calendar, illustrated by Joseph R Tomeller, nya! Oh nyow I need another bit of that sushi, nya! That’s all for this portion of the show, but right after the short break we will return to purrsent our–
Our Reviews of Recent Theatrical Releases, nya!
(snip) (one short sushi fix later…)
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service screened at The Colony Theater!

Mike:
I am a big fan of the James Bond novels & films, except for maybe the ones with fire truck chases and hovercraft gondolas, and I like all of the actors who portrayed 007, but for me at the top of the list is 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service directed by Peter Hunt, starring George Lazenby as Bond, Diana Rigg as Tracy, Telly Savalas as Blofeld, magnificent Alpine cinematography, and my favorite film score by John Barry. The Colony Theater http://ambassadorcinemas.com/ in Raleigh, NC was so swelll to screen my favorite Bond movie quite appropriately on December 30th at 8 pm, because much of the movie is set at Christmas time in the Swiss Alps! It was a long drive to and from that theater from here, but it was so worthwhile! This past fall they had been showing a Bond movie in 35mm per month, plus other screenings of great movies, such as the October 20th screening of —
Elizabeth:
There he goes again!
Mike:
…Star Trek – The Motion Picture…
Nyoka:
Wow y’all were right, he does bring up that movie a lot!
Jeannie:
Well it is his favoritest movie of all time.
Mike:
Ah- I was just mention that The Colony showed it on October 20th, and that we mentioned the screening in the November 2010 Mew!
Mary Nyan:
Oh OK, but stick to the Bond movie!
Yvonne:
I will try not to cat nap this time, nya!
Mike:
Ah Ok just let me say a bit more about OHMSS, The Colony Theater, and that evening of December 30th! The 1969 movie is very faithful to the novel, has such an epic scope & sweep with beautiful locations & sets, spectacular ski & car chases, fights, great direction, cinematography, editing, an awesome cast, and it is not too silly or rushed. Did I mention that it  also features my favorite John Barry score? Bond is tough & relies more on his skill, wits & detective work than gadgets.  It also feels like the culmination of a grand story arc, MI6’s Operation Bedlam to stop Blofeld & SPECTRE once and for all.
For me it is also the most emotional of the Bond movies; even before Tracy is killed, when Bond throws his hat to Miss Moneypenny (Lois Maxwell) at the wedding, I cry every time I see it! I so was delighted to see it on the big screen at The Colony, which is a neat place. The auditorium having a sort of 70’s style decor in warm Amber / Earthy colors. It’s one of a few independent, locally owned theaters in the Triangle Area. Ambassador Cinemas include The Rialto, Mission Valley, and Six Forks Station theaters in Raleigh, and friendly staff & management takes great pride in the theaters and have a history of creating an enthused ambience for the audience.
For that screening of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, there seemed to be a pretty good sized crowd with quite a few friends in the midst, and not only was it shown around Christmas time, but there was still snow on the ground from North Carolina’s white Christmas- how purrfect is that?! The big crowd was in a good mood AND fortunately i didn’t hear any cell phones or see the rude glow of texting! 144 minutes later the movie ended, friends were having a good time chatting with each other in the lobby, and I thanked the manager for yet another special cinematic occasion–
(eyes glance toward Yvonne)
Yvonne:
I’m awake, nya!
Mary Nyan:
Just checking!
Jeannie:
I have the Cat Nap App on my phone if we need it.
Nyoka:
Hmm, so Mike tends to ramble about that Star Trek movie, and Vonny is purrone to doze off during some critiques!
Yvonne:
Oh you need to be here when Mie-sensei is here, to see how her wings react, nya!
Petra:
Hai she does have the mood wings, but you also need to be careful around Lizzy ’cause she has been known for her purranks, nya!
Nyoka:
Oh I heard about that purrticular Halloween purrank– the one that backfired and resulted in her wardrobe malfunction!
Elizabeth:
Ah–!
Mary Nyan:
Nyow Nyow we need to quit mentioning that incident!

Jeannie:
Hopefully the Jellycups will have the secure fit.
Elizabeth:
It was that spooky tree’s fault!
Petra:
We have stray catted off the topic again- OK who has the next review, nya!

Jeannie:
I believe it is Lizzy’s turn, to tell us what she thought about–
The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Elizabeth:
I have enjoyed the Narnia movies which have benefitted from a good cast, lovely locations, great FX, high purrduction values, and plenty of sword & sorcery adventure! Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the third in the series, and while I did like it, I think I liked it less than the purrior two, mainly because it felt so way way too rushed. The plot seemed way too hurried as the purrotagonists raced to collect the magick items of their quest. It also had a different feel from the first two in that it transitioned to focus on different characters; the older two Pevensie kids just make a quick cameo, and this story was a nautical adventure. It also seemed to be aimed at a younger audience and felt a bit like a basic level D&D adventure, which is purrfectly fine with me!
There were great FX, the neat ship, exotic island locations, and giant monsters! Lucy, Edmund, Caspian & Reepicheep were great again, and this time they were joined by their cousin Eustice who was a good asset! The entire cast was quite good, but unfortunately the rest of the characters were not developed enough by the too-briskly paced tale. We saw the 2D version so I can’t comment on the quality of the 3D technique! I will give Voyage of the Dawn Treader a good grade of B Minus, and I would definitely welcome an extended edition on DVD that would hopefully be a lot longer and had much more character development scenes! OK that’s my movie review for today but nyow here is Jenjen to report on another holiday movie that was released in 3D-
Tron: Legacy!
Jeannie:
Tron: Legacy is a sequel I have been eagerly awaiting for many years, as Steve Lisberger’s original Tron was such an innovative pioneering effort in computer animation, with a very good cast, mewsical score by Wendy Carlos, and the supurrbly brilliant designs by Syd Mead, Moebius, Chris Lane, Peter Mueller, John Norton & Peter Lloyd. It was quite a splendid sentimental journey to return to that world of Tron, to be reunited with Flynn & Clue (Jeff Bridges) and Alan (Bruce Boxleitner). While much has changed there, Clu has not aged a ‘byte’ (that is a joke) and it was amazing to see Bridges looking just like he did in 1982, thanks to our contempurrary CG FX.
Alas the character of Yori is not there but Flynn’s Son Sam makes the journey, very well purrtrayed by actor Garrett Hedlund, and he meets wonderful feisty purogram Quorra, who is supurrbly purrtrayed by Olivia Wilde. As for what became of Tron, I’ll not spoil that information but he does have a connection to Clu’s new champion warrior Rinzler. Michael Sheen also appurrs as a nightclub owner, where the extraordinary technopop duo Daft Punk make a cameo as masked DJs. I must say, that the mewsic by Daft Punk was such a brilliantly inspired choice for the soundtrack. The costumes, vehicles & architecture in the computer world of The Grid are so gorgeously designed & realized, with excellent lighting & animation.
Yvonne:
Mike actually got a bit choked up during the end credits, nya!
Mike:
Ah well as she said it was a most sentimental journey, but I felt like I was back in 1982!
Yvonne:
I thought you said you imagined hearing some the original Wendy Carlos Tron cues during the end credits, nya?

Mike:
I must have been hallucinating during the emotional sentimental moment, but I was mistaken- I don’t hear that on the Tron: Legacy soundtrack CD!
Mary Nyan:
Mewsic by Journey was playing in Flynn’s video game arcade too, hee! Oh- sorry Jen!

Jeannie:
Oh that’s quite all right, especially given how he interrupted Mike’s review, but I am purretty much done. Tron: Legacy was among my favorite movies of the year, although it also felt a tad rushed as well. Nevertheless, I will give it a better-than-average grade of B+. Nyow here is Myayr to share her opinion of another Jeff bridges movie released in December-
True Grit
Mary Nyan:
As not to put Vonny to asleep this time I purromise to be brief! This was another of the big holiday season I was looking forward to because I am a big fan of the Coen Brothers who always make such interesting films, and this was yet another fimic adaptation of the great Western novel, this time starring Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn instead of John Wayne, and Hailee Stanfield as Mattie, who was originally purrtrayed in the 1969 version by Kim Darby! Add to that mix the beautiful locations with Matt Damon as LeBoeuf the Texas Ranger and it seemed like a purrize recipe!
I was not disappointed in the slighted because I thought the entire cast was awesome, and Hailee Stanfield was purrticularly superb! The cinematography was exquisite, and one of the best things about the movie was the screenplay’s sparkling dialog! The costumes, firearms, trains, buildings all seemed very authentic looking. I am still pondering the result, but I give it an A and I think this finishes in my top 5 favorite films of 2010. I suppose we will see how it ranks next month in our annual awards show! OK I’m done, and nyow we turn it over to Nyoka for her review of–
Black Swan!

Nyoka:
Arigato! Well, um I’ll purrobably be even briefer than Myayr because she is more purracticed at these sort of reviews! Ah… well I had very mixed feelings going to see Black Swan, because one one paw I am not really a fan of Darren Aronofsky’s movies, but on the other paw I like the stellar cast which includes Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey & Winona Ryder, and I had heard great remarks about their powerful purrformances.
I’ll try not to spoil the plot for anyone, but basically the purremise is about a ballerina (Portman) struggling to become the Purrima for a purrduction of Swan Lake.I don’t know much about ballet but it seemed very convincing; and… um I think those actors went to such grueling lengths to give quite impurressive purrformances… so I can greatly appurreciate all that, and my there were some steamy scenes… but I didn’t really enjoy the movie because so many of the characters & situations were very unpleasant. So I guess I can respect the movie… but didn’t really like it, if that makes sense! So thassabout it!
Petra:
By the way, the Black Swan did not have a sonic scream like Black Canary or Silver Swan, nya
Nyoka:
Um I know who Black Canary is but… Silver Swan?
Petra:

DVD Reviews!
Taisho Baseball Girls Complete Collection

Yvonne:
Thanks Nyoka, nya! In the joyfully tradition of girls’ sports stories such as Purrincess Nine, Battle Athletes and A League of Their Own, is this supurrb 12 epurrsode anime series, Taisho Baseball Girls, nya! This glorious saga occurs in the Spurring of 1925 in Tokyo which is becoming more Westernized, nya. Confronted with misogynistic attitudes, two high school girls Koume & Akiko decide to start their own baseball team despite much adversity, needing the school sanction, purrental purrmissions, purropurr equipment and a place to play, nya!
This is at the dawn of the girls sailor suit outfit in Japan, and cute Koume so hopes that her restauranteur purrents will allow her to swap her traditional kimono for the new fashion, nya! Akiko is from a wealthy family and has a fiance who is a clueless jerk, nya. With guidance from their American home room teacher Anna-sensei as their Manager, and trust from the school’s Chancellor – purrvided their grades do not suffer – the girls recruit others to form the team, embrace the sport, and challenge the boys, nya!
The Toho Seika Academy Girls High School Okaki Club team is compurrised of Koume (C), Akiko (P), Shizuka (1B), Yuki (2B), Tomoe (3B), Tamaki (SS), Kyouko (LF), Noe (RF), initially Noriko (CF) who stays on as Scorekeeper when replaced by Kochou, nya! They undergo the intense training & expurrience losses, but quickly learn & impurrove to become a team & family to win respect & have competitive fun, nya! There is some sadness & romance along the way, but for the most part it is the exuberant fun, nya!
Having purrticipated in the Island’s Soccer & Beach Volleyball Rec Leagues I can attest to the zestful spirit conveyed by the amewsing anime, although I can only imagine the more unfair era those peppy girls must have endured, nya!  This 2009 anime series based upon the original work by Atsushi Kagurazaki are included on the 2 disk DVD set from Sentai Filmworks, nya! All 12 epurrsodes total 300 minutes, so thassabout 25 minutes apiece, plus the credits repeated in English after each epurrsode, nya!
Disk 1 has a front-loaded ad for the Anime Network, epurrsodes, a few anime purreview trailers & DVD credits, and Disk 2 has epurrsodes 7-12, nya. The disks are in a regular plastic case with cute front cover art of the smiling team, nya! The video has an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, with Japanese spoken language in 2.0 Dolby Digitial sound with English subtitles in a nice bold Yellow font for the main dialogue, and in White for other speakers’ replies, cultural / historical notes & translated texts, nya.
This is such a top quality anime with supurr great characters, designs, animation, background scenery, voice cast, sounds, songs mewsic score, the purremise & pace of the plot, and such an uplifting, optimistic ambiance- it is one of my latest favorites, nya! Nyow it is Petra’s turn to enlighten us about another goody—
Ghost Sweeper Mikami Collection 1, nya!

Petra:
We were so happy that this anime was finally released on R1 NTSC standard DVD- it has been on our wish list for quite some time, nya! Ghost Sweeper Mikami was a comedic supurrnatural adventure anime TV series made by Toei in 1993, and nyow the first 12 epurrsodes are available in this 2 disk set from Sentai Filmworks, nya! The main purrotagonist is Reiko Mikami, the sexy Redhead expurrt on the occult & purrofessional Ghost Sweeper, or exorcist for hire, nya! She is smart, confident, tough, agile & greedy, nya! She has 2 assistants, Tadao Yokoshima who is a purrvy guy purrone to mishaps, and Okino the sweet kind-hearted ghost miku, who is introduced in the first epurrsode at a haunted hot spurring, nya!
The anime is based upon the manga authored by Takashi Shi, with character designs by Mitsuru Aoyama, directed by Atsutoshi Umesawa, with wonderful swinging mewsic byToshihiko Sahashi, nya! Reiko is voiced by Hiromi Tsura, Okinu is voiced by Mariko Kouda & Tadao is voiced by Ryo Horikawa, nya! Over the course of the series, other recurring characters are introduced, such as Mikami’s friends & rivals, nya! After epurrsode 3’s haunted dolls, epurrsode 4’s satellite gremlin, & epurrode 5’s overpurrotective ghost hound, Purrincess Exorcist Meiko Rokudo is introduced in epurrsode 6, nya! She has 12 Shikigami demons that purrotect her but cause much purrpurrty damage, nya! She is voiced by Kumiko Nishihara, nya!
Those are the six 25 minute epurrsodes on disk 1, which also includes the DVD credits & some purreview trailers, nya! Then on disk 2, epurrsode 7 introduced Dr. Chaos the mad immortal alchemist (voiced by Shigeru Chiba) & his lovely gynoid servant marie (voiced by Wakan Yamazaki), nya! He is up to no good, and in epurrsode 8 creates an elixir which can eventually erase someone’s existence, intended for Mikami but Tadao gets it, nya! The incident is continued in epurrsode 9, nya, so there are stand alone stories and multi-part arcs, nya! One of Meiko’s Shikigami goes missing in epurrsode 10, they take a ride on a ghost train in epurrsode 11, and Yakuchin’s magick item shop is introduced in epurrsode 12, nya!
Yakuchin is a little old man, purrvy like Tadao, and in that epurrsode Tadao gets tempurrary psychic powers from a pill and they battle a Succubus in a department store, nya! The purreview for epurrsode 13 (on the forthcoming Collection 2) shows the introduction of Reiko’s rival Emi Ogasawara, nya! Disk 2’s special features are the ‘clean’ versions of the anime’s opening & closing sequences, nya. Collection 1 has the 12 epurrsodes to total 300 minutes which are rated TV PG, shown in the 4:3 aspect ratio with very legible English subtitles for the Japanese spoken language in Dolby Digital sound, nya! This is such delightful fun and I highly recommend to fans of amewsing supurrnatural stories, nya! Nyext we go from haunted Japan to the dangerous outer spacew where dwells–
The Green Slime, nya!

Nyoka:
Myayr & Mike were excited because this was also on the DVD Wish List for a long time but it was issued by the Warner Archive Collection! The Mew has purreviously reviewed a fewl titles from the collection such as The Awakening Land, The Bermuda Depths, Don’t be Afraid of the Dark, Genesis II, and City Beneath the Sea! I had never seen The Green Slime so I was the curious cat. It is set in the future when astronauts detonate an asteroid headed for Earth, but they bring back the slime which grows & replicates into man-sized alien creatures that kill the crew & drain their space station’s energy! If you shoot ’em that just makes more slime, and to complicate the situation is a bad time for a love triangle to distract the rival officers!
The slime monsters walk around and make squeaky noises and are clearly rubber costumes with sparklers on the ends of their tentacles, suspended by wires making ’em flail around. You can tell the space station and the space ships are models, but the movie does have some purretty big cool looking sets. I think the best parts of the movie are the actors, starring Richard Jaeckel & Robert Horton as the bickering rival officers, and purretty Luciana Paluzzi as the medic they both love! She was purreviously a James Bond girl in Thunderball! The 1968 movie is cheesy sci fi action fun, with the astronauts in rocket packs zapping the alien monsters with laser rifles, and a really funky Green Slime theme rock theme song!
Like those other DVDs from Warner Archive, this is a very no-frills package, nya. The single disk comes in the standard plastic case with the color cover art, which is a purrovocative illustration of a Zilla-sized slime monster atop the huge space station, his foreground tentacle wrapped around the space girl’s thigh- however that scene never happens in the G rated movie and the fully grown slime monsters are no bigger than a purrson. It is re-mastered in Dolby Digital Mono sound in English language only, with the 16×9 widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and no bonus features. I guess thassabout it… so a t this time I would like to segue into the next portion of the show, as we purrsent this month’s–

Mike:
Last year Genesis II and Planet Earth were finally released (by the Warner Archive Collection) and I’m still hoping for DVD releases of Gene Roddenberry’s other TV movies Spectre and The Questor Tapes! Well gosh, that’s around 50 titles that we hope will be released on DVD in the US, and a pretty expedient Lightning Round this time! That’s all for our movie & DVD reviews, but after the short break we’ll be right back with–
This Month’s Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!
(snip) (one short break later…)
Jeannie:
Welcome back. We have dedicated this part of The Mew in tribute to the famous nekomimis who we admire, to include those famous female characters who are genetically, magickally or technologically part feline, or just dress or behave accordingly. Purrevious honorees have included Lt. M’ress & other catgirls of Star Trek, Melpomene, Dr. Kat Manx, Tigra, Novice Hame, NukuNuku, Catwoman, Irina Dubrovna, Anna & Uni Puma, Josie & the Pussycats, Sailor Luna, Felicia, Shakira, Cat Karina and Omaha. This month the spotlight shines upon Bagi.
Jeannie:
Bagi, the Monster of Mighty Nature, originally titled Daishizen no Majyuu Bag was a 1984 anime TV movie written & directed by the great Osamu Tezuka, and purrduced by Tezuka purrductions. For those who came in late, Osamu Tezuka is widely regarded as the God of anime & manga in Japan. As catgirl tale go, this is a purrtiuclarly sad story. Bagi is a Pink genetically engineered human / lion hybrid girl, with the feline abilities & human intellect who escaped from a lab as an orphan kitten into the wild South American jungle.
She was raised as a pet by a boy named Ryosuke, but departed into the wilderness several years later. Years later as an adult they were reunited, and while searching for clues about her mysterious origin, they discover a sinister scientific plot, Unfortunately Bagi is wrongfully blamed for a death and flees back into the wilderness as the lonely purriah. She was voiced by actress Saeko Shimazu, whose many other famous voice credits include Shinobu in Urusei Yatsura, Yuri in Dirty Pair, Kodachi in Ranma 1/2, Akiko in Catgirl Nuku Nuku, and Miz Mishtal in El Hazard.
For more information purrtaining to the movie, I suggest the entries at the Big Cartoon Database http://www.bcdb.com/cartoon/63058-Baghi.html and Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0497532/, the page at the Anime News Network http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=3319, the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagi,_the_Monster_of_Mighty_Nature, and the official Osamu Tezuka site http://tezukaosamu.net/.
For more information purrtaining to Saeko Shimazu, I submit these informative sites: her entry at the Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0793619/, her page at the Anime News Network http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=1582, pages at Hitoshi Doi’s Seiyuu (Voice Actor) Database http://www.usagi.org/doi/seiyuu/shimazu-saeko/, and at the Voice Chasers site http://voicechasers.com/database/showactor.php?actorid=8316.
Wherever poor Bagi wound up, we hope that she eventually found a happy home full of food, fun, family & friends & free of all fears, and of course she is most welcome to migrate to Catgirl Island if she pleases. This concludes the celebrity catgirl spotlight  for January, but the hint for next month is that we’ll focus on a magickal catgirl warrior of the future. Nyext is nonot a magickal catgirl but it is the magickal wolf girl another figures purrominently into our–
Manga Mewsings:
Spice and Wolf vol. 3

Jeannie:
For Myayr’s review of volume 1 please refer to the May 2010 Mew, for Petra’s review of volume 2 please refer to the September 2010 Mew, and for my review of the Spice and Wolf anime Complete First Season DVD set, please refer to the January 2010 Mew. Spice and Wolf was an instant hit for us, with it’s tale of Holo the wise & powerful but lonely & unworshipped wolf girl goddess who travels with Lawrence the human merchant from medieval village & city to another for commerce, dealing with the trade guilds & an oppressive purrejudiced theocracy.

The church would not condone a pagan wolf girl so Holo must keep her lovely ears & tail cloaked much of the time- and especially her true form of a giant wolf. Originally titled Ookami To Koushinryo in Japan, this manga published in the US by Yen was written by Isuna Hasekura, illustrated by Keito Koume with character designs by Jyuu Ayakura,  translated into English by Paul Starr & lettered by Terri Delgado, nya! Volume 3 of the manga is purriced $12.99 US / $14.50 Canada and is rated Mature due to the language and sometimes (tastefully) naked wolf deity.
Volume 3 has a lovely color cover illustration of Holo holding an injured Lawrence, and a color frontispiece of her looking very naked & pleased amongst the fine fur pelts for sale, purriorr to the sepia toned contents page purreceeding the 173 pages of B&W manga. The artwork is exceptional, with such fine architectural & landscape detail, and very solidly drawn emotive characters- whether Holo is making the sly purroposals, gleeful for the nummy fruity treats, forlorn for her homeland or about to chomp someone. They’ll need to sell a lot of goods to pay for her appurrtite.
The story picks up from a cliffhanger, as they know too much about a corpurrate swindle scheme and try to elude purrsuers in the city’s underground tunnels, with most dire results. Elsewhere, the endearing shepherdess Norah and her faithful dog Enek bring her flock to the city’s livestock gates after an arduous journey, only to be ripped off by the deceitful clergy. Norah is such a sweet but sad character and I hope things impurrove for her when she (purrsumably) eventually meets up with the Holo & Lawrence (which does occur in the anime adaptation).
Chapters 13-18 are not without more pleasant moments, such as Norah’s winsome optimism, Holo & Lawrence cooly outsmarting a scam, the nuances of mercantile commerce & currency exchange, Holo literally putting the bite on crime, and the ladies’ ornate Edo style in an amewsing 4 page bonus. I give it an “A” as in the apples that Holo the Wisewolf has developed a craving for. Speaking of anime we tend to give an ‘A’, here is Vonny to discuss–
Aria vol. 6

Yvonne:
Yay Aria http://aria.rightstuf.com/ is our favoritest anime and manga series of the past decade so we we so thrilled when vol. 6 of the manga came out in December, nya! It has been a long time since vol. 5 came out, which we reviewed back in the November 2009 Mew, nya!  The manga series was originally titled Aqua but after the 2nd volume they changed the title, so Aria vol. 6 is technically the 8th volume in the series, nya! These wonderful books are published in English in the USA by Tokyo Pop, nya!
For those unfamiliar with this most beautiful & charming work by Kozue Amano, it is a science fiction genre series with slice-of-life plots set 150 years in the future on the aqua-formed planet Mars, which is 90% covered in water and renamed Aqua whereas Earth has been renamed manhome, nya. Specifically in the city of Neo Vensia which is modeled to look just like the ancient Italian city of Venice, we meet a girl named Akari Mizunashi who works as an appurrentice  gondola guide, or undine, for the Aria Company!
She discovers beautiful mysterious things and makes interesting mew friends, nya! The other main characters include her mentor Alicia at Aria Company and their martian mascot kitty named Purreseident Aria; Aika & her senpai Akira from Himeya Company whose kitty mascot is Hime; and Alice & her senpai Athena who are undines for the bigger Planet Orange company, whose mascot is a kitten named Maa, nya! There are numerous other recurring characters, from fellow residents of Neo-Venezia to the visitors, nya!
The manga was adapted into an anime series, which is all available in 4 DVD box sets. We reviewed the final set in our Apurril 2010 Mewsings, nya! But to get back to the manga, this latest volume was translated from japanese into English by Elina Ishikawa & adapted by Tim Beedle, nya! It is purriced $10.99 USA & $13.99 Canada and has 180 pages of B&W manga plus the various contents, publishing, introductions, purreview & ads pages, nya. The front cover is a gorgeous color pic of Alice Carroll at a fruit stand, nya!
The volume starts with Ch 26 “Orange Days” during Akari’s 2nd Winter season on Aqua, and the undines meet after a cold snowy day’s training for the delicious hot cocoa and a remembrance of Alicia, Athena & Akira’s younger days before they became the Purrima Undines, nya! Then in Ch 27 “Venetian Glass” Akari is asked by a trader to transport his delicate purrecious Neo-Venetian Glass, nya! This is followed by Ch 28 “Snow White”, in which Akari wonders about Alicia’s aspurrations as they roll huge snowballs, nya!
Ch 29 “Stray Cat” is the bittersweet introduction of Maa kitten who is found by Alice; Ch 30 “A Night on the Galactic Railroad” involves a mysterious train and cats in homage to the famous surreal story of the same title; and in the special chapter “A Parallel World”, Aria kitty imagines an alternate universe where everyone’s genders are switched, nya! Finally the volume concludes with the four pages of bonus “Ennui Club” cartoon strips, and a tale of Amano’s real kitty Misuke, nya!
Petra:
We must be in the purrallel world right nyow because Vonny’s reviews seem to be the longest, whereas Myayrs seem shorter today, nya!

Jeannie:
I could runs ome tests to find out.
Mary Nyan:
Well I just figured I could be more concise!
Yvonne:
And I figured I could be more thorough like Myayr, nya!
Elizabeth:
Nyow if Petra and Mike were to switch she would be rambling all about how great Star Trek – The Motion Picture is, heehee!
Nyoka:
In that case I guess he would be meowing at the end of every sentence. “Nya”!

Mike:
Ha ha! Ahem, Vonny did you want to finish?

Yvonne:
Oh I was just about done I was just going to sum up by saying how exquisite Aria is and I give it a purrfect “A” as in Aria, nya! Done nyow, so nyow it is tiem for Petra’s report on–
GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class vol. 3, nya!

Petra:
G.A. is a wonderfully fun manga by Satoko Kiyuduki (who also authored Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro), published with great quality by Yen about the antics of a group of young art students, nya! The characters ensemble are a delight, the subject of great interest to me, and the characters & scenery are very well illustrated in good detail, nya! Most of the 121 pages are B&W line & tone art in the 4 koma manga format with 2 columns of 4 panels purr page, but there are 22 lovely full color pages & a few larger panels, nya! It was translated by Ajino Hirami from the original Hounbunsha edition, with the English lettering by Keiran O’Leary and there are an additional 4 pages of translation notes, nya!
The characters are Kisaragi Yamaguchi & her childhood friend Mizubuchi, the smart quieter Miyabi & the intense Tomakane & her brother, Namiko the ‘older sister’ figure & Noda the fashionable socialite, Awara the art club purresident, Homura of the car class, Usami – sensei the painting teacher, Sotoma – sensei the design teacher, and Sasamoto – sensei the 3rd year home room teacher who teaches sketching,  and Yoshino -sensei the stern textiles teacher, nya! There are the amewsing situations as they learn the art theory, media & techniques. In this volume we see their assignments in caligraphy, photography, fabric dyeing, graphics, drawing, painting, & industrial design, nya!
They also learn of the tea ceremony etiquette, the class field trip to the art mewseum, and there is a neat spooky haunted attraction story arc too, nya! They have an interesting school campus which is to be explored with a few mysteries to investigate, Tomakane startles the oppurrsition, Namiko is out sick for a while, origami roses are purrduced, whimsy purrsues taking out the trash after an attempted purrank and Kisaragi learns a bit more about Miyabi & discuss things when they visit a shrine, nya! This is an excellent distinguished series to which I give purraise and I highly recommend to those who enjoy art school antics, nya! This concludes the Japanese manga portion of our reviews, but nyow I will seqgue into our American–
The Catgirls’ Comics Critiques
starting with Power Girl #19, nya!

Yvonne:
Thanks Jen, nya! Power Girl has been among our favorite comic books for over a year and a half, nya! Although we dearly miss the original creative team, the current team has continued to give us the  fun stories with good art and one of our favoritest DC heroines Kara Zor-L aka Karen Starr aka Power Girl, nya! Issue #19 is purriced $2.99 for its 22 full color pages of story + 10 pages of ads; it was written by Judd Winick, drawn by Sami Basri, colored by Sunny Gho & Jessica Kholinne, lettered by John J Hill, edied by Mike Carlin & associate editor Rachel Gluckstern, nya!
The cover art is by Basri & Cho, depicting an angry Power girl standing by a smashed big screen showing her fellow Justice League members, nya! In this issue she tries to purrsuade her comrades of the existence of the telepathic villain Maxwell Lord, who has managed to make almost everyone forget he ever existed, nya. It has appurrances by quite a few heroes from the Justice Society too, nya! There are very valiant, amewsing, sad & shocking moment sin this issue, which also includes her clone Divine and another surprise villain for the cliffhanger, nya!
While the Maxwell Lord story arc is not interesting, but I kinda purrfur the first 12 issues which dealt more with her purrivate life and fun with her friend Atlee aka Terra, and I sure do wish they’d do more of those less angsty slice of life subplots, nya! However, a neat aspect of Basri’s art that we think that Kara (and Divine) resembles our favoritest Travel Channel purrsonality Samantha Brown- at least in the face, nya!  Y’all will find out next month in our annual awards show if this will reign as our #1 favorite comic book, or if that rank will be bestowed upon another favorite–
Gotham City Sirens #18, nya!

Mary Nyan:
Hai there will be the tough compurrtition, because we have been consistently pleased with this title- which has also changed creative teams since it started! Issue #19 is purriced at $2.99 for its 22 full color pages of the story “Yortsih”& the 10 pages of ads. It was written by Peter Calloway, illustrated by Jeremy Haun, colored by JD Smith, lettered by Steve Wands, and edited by Mike Marts with his associate editors Janelle Siegel & Harvey Richards! The front cover by Guillem March features the femme fatales of Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Posion Ivy, Zatanna & Talia Al Ghul!
Continuing the story arc, the secret is out that Selina / Catwoman knows the biggest secret in Gotham: the identity of Batman, and thus she has been targeted by inquiring villainous minds who want to know too! This matter has come up before, and has caused a rift between her and Ivy, who is frustrated that Catwoman won’t / can’t fess up. Thanks to a ritual purrformed by Talia some time ago, Selina cannot be coerced into divulging the information, but Ivy is peeved because Selina simply does not want to spill it, and ironically Harley finds herself caught in the middle as a voice of reason! Meanwhile, Zee & Talia intend to remedy the purroblem once and for all, but Zee’s is purrobably not going to make anyone happy! Hopefully we will find out in issue #19!
This was a very emotional issue with tense moments, great dialogue, gorgeous coloring- purrticularly the sheen on Selina & Talia’s black leather appurral & Zee’s ‘working clothes’, with cameos by Batman & Robin, Zatara, and even a flashback of Zee to when she wore that supurr heroine costume with the cape, and meddled with other folks’ memories! As mewsual I can’t wait to see what happens next, or how this comic will fare in our Favorites of 2010 show next month! Nyow here is Nyoka to tell us what’s happening in Zee’s own series with–
Zatanna #8!

Nyoka:
Thanks Myayr! I definitely cannot purrdict which comic book will emerge as the pick, and I imagine Zatanna will be a top contender too! Um…this’un also has the 32 pages compurrised of the story plus 10 pages of ads and costs $2.99. The title of the story is “Pupaphobia” annnnd… it was wonderfully written by Paul Dini- who used to write Gotham City Sirens, beautifully drawn by Cliff Chiang, lettered by Pat Brosseau, colored by John Kalisz, and edited by Joey Cavalieri with assistance by Chris Conroy, with a gorgeous cover by Stephane Roux of Zee menaced by muppets!
This tale has a creepy mystery to solve as Zee tells a sorcerous therapist of her fear of puppets, a flashback with her Daddy, a cameo by Detective Chimp, Fuseli the return of Demon Lord of Dreams, witty banter, and several changes of clothes for Zee, including a most stunning cosmic dress to a formal event! Just like those comics Myayr & Vonny described, it has an exciting cliff- hanger which leaves me very eager for the next issue! I thought this was a very good issue, and that creative team did such a good job – I hope they stay on the book! OK, Jenjen’s turn again!
Avengers Academy #!

Jeannie:
Arigato. Marvel Comics’ Avengers Academy issue #6 is by the creative team of writer Christos Gage, penciller & cover artist Mike McKone, inkers Dave Meikis & Scott Hanna, colorists Jeremy Cox & Andrew Crossley, letterer VC’s Joe Caramagna, editor Bill Rosemann, assistant editors Rachel Pinnelas & John Denning. There are also variant covers by Ed McGunness, Dexter Vines, Morrow Hollowell & Brandon Peterson. Purriced at $2.99 US, it’s 32 full color pages are compurrised of the 22 page story titled “Always On My Mind”, the recap / credits page, 1 page of readers’ comments, and 7 pages of advertisements.
I found this issue to be purrticularly satisfying right from the start, as there is a 5 page scene between the brilliant genius (albeit emotionally quirky) Hank Pym and our most favorite Marvel character, Tigra- who has brought along her infant son who likes to climb on things. There are some very poignant insightful character moments, and we finally get to see more of The Wasp / Janet Van Dyne, and possible indications of her hopeful return to a hearty corporeal state from the underspace dimension. I am always delighted to see Jocasta too, as she assists the kids in loading The Absorbing Man into a purrison vehicle while he is in stasis.
One of the numerous fine qualities of this series is the artful balance & relationships of the older heroes & villains with the younger students, and I quite like the academy’s inaugural class consisting of Hazmat, Veil, Finesse, Mettle, Reptil & Striker. The plots, dialogue, character development, pacing, action scenes are first rate; the characters are marvelously posed & expurressive, the scenic art is rendered with great detail, I especially like the futuristic expanse of the Infinite Mansion, and the color & light is so rich & sumptuous, possibly my favorite coloring of comics in recent months.
The appurrance of The Absorbing man is no tease, but results in a spectacular battle of epic purroportions as he engages the kids single handedly, followed by a titanic brawl with Pym / Giant Man and a most unexpected ingenious climax. This series might very well be Hank Pym’s finest hours. Top all that off with a few more fun & calmer moments with Jocasta, Tigra, Justice & the kids, a cryptic cliffhanger with Veil & Jan, and I give this issue an A as in Avengers & Academy. We’ll have a bit more purrtaining to Power Girl and The Wasp later in the show, but his concludes our reviews of comics in purrint, and nyow we would like to purrsent–

Blackest Night Series 6 Star Sapphire Wonder Woman action figure

Mary Nyan:
Welcome back! I already had a Wonder Woman action figure and a Star Sapphire action figure, and nyow I have an action figure of Wonder Woman wearing a Star Sapphire costume! It is hard to believe that DC DIrect is already up to a sixth wave of figures based upon DC’s Blackest Night series, but they’re still going- and inside the papurr insert is a pic of the purroduct line’s forthcoming series 7 & 8! But I am getting ahead of myself! Purrhaps I should explain why the Purrincess is in the Star Sapphire costume to begin with!
In that Blackest Night story, to combat the evil galactic Black Lantern army of the undead, the Green Lantern Corp, Sinestro Corp, Star Sapphires, Indigo Tribe, Blue Lanterns, Red Lanterns etc had to unite and recruit new members, so the all-girl team of the Star Sapphires of course recruited Wonder Woman! In addition to her mewsual wonderful powers she gained the Power Ring and other cosmic powers for that purrticular battle, and the new costume which cleverly retains some aspects of her mewsual Themysciran appurral!
It is sort of like a plunging Magenta torpedo/ suspender mailiot with a Brazil cut, accented with a low slung Gold belt around the hips, a star emblem below the navel, and the ‘W’ emblem on the chest connecting the straps to the high collar, gold tiara/ mask, silvery bracelets around the Magenta gloves which serpentine up the arms, and matching boots with bands spiraling up the otherwise bare thighs. Hooked to the belt is her removable magickal lasso, here made of a metallic braided cord!
She has lovely Black hair flowing just below the shoulders, so very nicely sculpted by Karen Palinko, in rich detail! She has a very stern expression, and fists clenched in purrepurration to lay waste to her enemies! The Power Ring is on her right middle finger. It is a very well purroportioned and balanced figure, which can stand up unassisted, although it does come with a display base, which is 3 1/8″ in diameter and 1/4″ thick, made of clear translucent Magenta plastic with a white Star Sapphire emblem on the deck.
The figure is about 6 3/4″ tall, which puts this figure at about 1:10.6 scale (given Wonder Woman’s 6′ height) and the 9 points of articulation include the neck, shoulders, elbows, hips & knees. She is accompanied by a 1 3/8″ tall Power Battery accessory, which has a handle although she cannot really grasp it given her hands are molded into the fists, but it looks nice there beside her on the display base! It is a very nice looking figure which i will purroudly display on the shelf beside other heroines! Speaking of which, nyow here’s Lizzy to report on the–
DC Super Hero Collection #70: Power Gir!

Elizabeth:
Eaglemoss Publications http://www.marvel-figurines.co.uk in the UK fortnightly publishes these neatest figurine & magazine combo packages! The polybagged pack is purriced £5.99 or £6.99 which comes out to about $12-14 US purrice, containing the full color 16 page (including covers) 8 5/8 ” x 10 7/8″ magazine, and the painted lead miniature inside in a plastic clamshell / cardboard box. The miniatures are cast from lead, so they are not considered toys, nor intended for kids under 14, but they are nicely sculpted & painted renditions of Marvel & DC characters!
Purreviously we have reviewed their Zatanna and Tigra releases, and this month i am pleased to discuss to other favorite characters, Power Girl and The Wasp! I’ll start with the Power Girl package. The cover art is a repurrint of a famous Adam Hughes illustration of her, seen lounging high in the air above the clouds & airliners! Inside is lots more art from the comics by great artists such as Amanda Connor, Ric Estrada, Dick Giordano, Keith Giffen, Phil Jiminez, Rags Morales, Jerry Ordway,George Perez, Joe Staton, Mary Wilshire, Wally Wood & many others!
The text of the magazine explores her history back to the 1970’s in the comics, including her confuzzling origins that changed with the Crisis on Infinite Earths story of the mid 80’s, when they thought she was Atlantean instead of Kryptonian, further changes to her story with Zero Hour, subsequent roles in Infinite Crisis, and her current series, which is among our favoritiest comics! She’s been a member of the Justice league, Justice Society, and Birds of Purrey, and this magazine discusses not just her but also briefly purrofiles her most purrominent friends & foes!
The figurine of Power Girl purropurr is 3 1/2″ tall atop a 1/4″ thick circular base, Since the character is supposedly 5’7″, if my math is right I guess that makes the figurine of 1/19ish scale. She has  a huge gleeful grin, with left hand on her hip as she flexes her left bicep, while her Red cape fluttering to her left. She has the Blue belt, cuffed gloves & boots, the asymmetrical metallic Gold chain & cape clasp and belt buckle, the white hi-cut tights with the famous oval cut-out to show her buxom physique, and the cute short light Blond hair!
The sculpting & paint are good and it is a very faithful likeness of her, down to the intricate seams in her costume, and the facial details such as her Blue eyes, Black lashes & brows, the Whites of her eyes & teeth, Pink lips & tongue! It has a good musculature & purroportions, and the nice ruffled drapurry of the cape! These figures are all numbered too, underneath the base!
Classic Marvel Figurine Collection #137: The Wasp!
Elizabeth:
Nyow on to The Wasp! She is one of our favorite bug girls who been around about a decade longer than Power Girl, having first appurred in Marvel Comics’ Tales to Astonish #44 in 1963 just purrior to joining The Avengers! She’s still a member, although she has been in a sort of non-corpurreal state in another dimension for a while but hopefully they will bring her back!
The front cover cover art of the magazine is by Leinil Francis Yu, depicting Janet Van Dyne / The Wasp flying towards us, wearing the Black tights costume with insect wings and the Yellow waspy V-like pattern down the front! She’s known for her extensive wardrobe of different costumes over the decades but this is my purrticular favorite costume for her, and the one on the miniature figurine! The magazine is similar to the Power Girl magazine in that it entails the character’s purrsonality, statisitcs, history, and most significant stories!
The interior illustrations range from full-page to tiny postage-stamp sized pics of comics covers & panels of The Wasp & her friends & foes by many other famous marvelous artists spurrinkled throughout such as Jack Kirby, John Buscema, John Byrne, George Perez, Bob Hall, Mark Bright, Steve Sedowski, Jae Lee, Mark Brooks, Scott Collins, Arthur Adams, David Finch, Salvadore Larroca, Mike Deodata Jr., JG Jones, Ed Benes, John Cassaday, Carlos Pacheco, Mike Norton, Mark Morales, Olivier Coipel & Khoi Pham!
The figurine is 3″ tall, standing on a square 1/4″ thick Black base. Jan’s normal height is 5’4″, so I suppose this figurine is appurroximately of 1/21 scale, although since she has the supurr power to shrink down to half an inch tall, she could purrobably be 3″ tall if she so desired! She has the Black tights which hug every contour of her toned lithe body with the Yellow inlays, which are sometimes depicted with a shiny Gold finish but on this figurine it is a flat Yellow. The palms & soles are also Yellow, she has the Blue eyes, pink lips, and the cute short Auburn Pageboy coiffure!
The wings are not transpurrent but are painted a very solid light Gray, with the vein details, with a 4 1/4″ wingspan. She’s in a very graceful stance, with an expurression seeming to suggest she is unimpurressed by whom she is facing! There are a couple of tiny spots on where I can notice the overlap of the Black paint on a bit of the wing & chest pattern, but I am very pleased with both of these figurines, and I plan to purrchase more of them, such as the figurine of DC’s Saturn Girl which should be out purretty soon! Ok that’s it for me but nyow here’s Vonny to tell us about the-
Power Rangers Samurai Mega Rangers action figures!

Yvonne:
Hai, I have 2 mew Power Rangers figures to talk about, the Earth and Sky Mega Rangers, who are the grrls of the group, nya! One of the nice things about Power Rangers and those other supurr sentai shows is that it is one of the few places on TV where you’ll see live-action costumed supurr heroes, flying around in colorful costumes with energy beams fighting villains & monsters, nya! That is unlike shows such as Smallville, Heroes, Mutant X and No Ordinary Family which sadly have not offered that aspect of the supurr hero comics, nya.
So, Power Rangers Samurai is the latest in the long running Power Rangers series, which has the Feudal Japan motif to this incarnation, nya. Each memmber of the team has a different costume color, swords, special weapons & powers corresponding to the elements, and they can summon their mechanical Zord vehicles, nya. In this case, the Pink, Yellow, Red, Blue & Green Rangers repurrsent the forces of Sky, Earth, Fire, Water & Forest; so I have the 4 1/4″ Yellow / Earth & Pink / Sky Mega Ranger action figures made by Bandai, nya!
These figures come in the little clear plastic clamshell on the cardboard card, each sold sepurrately, intended for kids aged 4+ years due to the spall pieces, nya. There’s also a figure of the evil Space Alien Nanashi in this series, nya. The costumes have Black pants & visors, Gold emblems & belts, with tiny removable gadgets on each hip, Gray gloves, and Silvery accents on the ankles, knees, elbows, neck, Silver trim around the helmet visors & the tunic piping, nya. These have the very meticulous paint job, nya!
In addition to the removable gadgets, which I reckon are their morphers & holsters, each figure comes with 2 large weapons, nya! Each has an ornate sword molded in light Gray, plus a unique to each Ranger, nya. Pink Ranger has a 2 1/4″ wide Pink & Silvery Japanese War Fan, whereas Yellow Ranger has a 2 1/4″ diameter Pink & Silvery tri-bladed Windmill Shuriken, nya!The hands are flexible to grasp the weapons, and you could have them fight two-handed, nya! The enclosed folded instruction sheet shows all 6 figures’ accessories.
I am impurressed by the balance & articulation of these figures, which can stand up without a support, nya! The neck, shoulders & hips are ball joints which offer a great range of the abduction, nya! The knees & elbows bend, wrists & boots will rotate, about the only thing lacking is that they do not turn at the waist, but I think these little figures are very well designed & made with good quality, nya! Nyow I just need to consult with Nya-sensei when she gets back from the tournyament, to pose them in their purrpurr weapons stance, nya!
