(The White dinner jacket / Black tie outfit) ) Aloha y’all- welcome to The Mew, for our monthly reviews & recommendations of books, comics, visual & performing arts, toys & other fun stuff! Today’s special show comes from the Dhalia Deck of the Catgirl Island Purrforming Arts Center! Every January, we reflect on the movies, TV, books, comics, music, toys, games etc of the previous year, and then announce our favorites in each category during our February ‘awards show’! That ceremony will start a bit later, when we’ll be joined by several guest correspondents & ‘purrsenters’ and hopefully see lots of friends in the audience! But first we’re here for our usual monthly reviews & discussions, and now here are the Ladies of the Mew!
(wearing the delightful Dogwood purrint kimono) Whassup!
(wearing the Green Midori Anthurium purrint kimono) Aloha!
(wearing the Golden Beehive Ginger purrint kimono and a Yellow Kahili Ginger tail corsage) Hi Hi, nya!
(wearing the peachy Apurricot purrint kimono and a strand of purrls) Nihao.
(her faerie wings purrotrude from the back of a Pink Cherry Tree purrint kimono) Mellow greetings!
(wearing the Magenta Ornamental Pineapple purrint kimono and Purrple Bougainvillea lei) Konnitiwa!
(Wearing the Ice Blue Calathea purrint kimono and a White Carnation in her hair) Howdy! Look who followed me here today!
(Wearing the Blue Hydrangea purrint kimono and a Plumeria tail corsage) Howdy- it is good to be back!
(wearing the Red & Gold Chrysanthemum purrint kimono and a Lotus blossom tail corsage) Nameste, nya! Nyot only are both those sisters here here is my sister Tara-chan, making her Mew debut, nya!
(wearing the Crimson Lobster Claw Heliconia purrint kimono and a Lotus blossom tail corsage) Hai please take care of me, nya!
Welcome aboard Tara-chan! This time let’s breeze through the “Been Up2” kind of quickly, as we have a lot to cover in the tight schedule before the ceremony! So, let’s start with Nya-sensei and then go clockwise!
It’s been ironic of late that Nyoka has been spending more time on the island and I’ve been away a lot at the tournyaments, so it is good that we are both here for a change! My students brought home lots of trophies, and I can discuss that in more detail later at the party! Otherwise I plan to spend a bit more time here, especially with the new dojo annex about to open!
I have mostly been relaxing and reading, doing more of the mystical research and taking basic Speaking Faerie 101, the Faerie Writing lab, and Mermaid 202 at the school, so hopefully I can soon start reading some of their ancient texts, and Lizzy wants be to join the recreation league beach volleyball!
I will be glad to help! We will have you talking to the trees in no time! Oh you should come by the theatre too- we’re rehearsing As You Like It! I’m doing that and giving the golf instruction!
I have been occupied the yoga studio, kyu-do club and my belly dance troupe which is purrforming at the East entrance before & after the ceremony tonight, and next week I will be bikini modeling in the Turks and Caicos, but I am hoping to have enough free time there to make some modifications to the underwater ROV the robotics club built for Ilyana.
Things slowed down a bit at the shrine after the mew year and our mew appurrentice miko are taking on more of the responsibilities, and Beccabot has been taking a more active role in running the spa so I’ve been spending more time with the volleyball, the hot salsa dancing and planting the Pansies in the garden!
My Hula dance classes are performing at the Cala Lilly Lobby & West Entrance and for some of my students this is their first public purrformance! I had a good time at Ichibancon 2 and I might be making more costumes this month! Ah aside from the teaching & the shrine I’ve been hitting the waves, and looking forward to tonight’s ceremony!
Oh this month has mostly been the limit of Bluefun, Blackfin & Stripurrs, but we’ve caught the nice Amberjacks, Mako, Groupurr and a Sword, nya! Fortunately we did not get hit with the snow that some of the coast got, nya!
I was hoping we might actually get some snow here but it missed us, nya! I have been been busy with school, basketball, helping my sister with the boat, and I caught a tasty Trigger Fish, nya!
We’re so glad you could be here, nya! My life has been bouncing between the volleyball and the mewseum, nya! It was crowded there today, with visitors here for the awards ceremony, nya! Oh and we have a few mew additions to the Guest Art Gallery which I would like to mention, nya!
Oh as soon as the ceremony is over I’ll be heading back to the mainland to resume my thesis purroject! Your turn, Mike!
Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!
We are purroud to purresent additions to the Mewseum’s Guest Art Gallery Two http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html by
Kittyhawk & Misty Hopkins
, nya! Unless otherwise noted, the gallery pages’ mewest pics will be on the lowermost row of the widdle ‘thumbnail’ repurrsentations, so just click on a given thumbnail portion of an image to see the whole larger image, nya!
Firstly is the cute “Catgirl Valkyrie” pencil sketch by Kittyhawk, which was commissioned at Ichiban Con 2, nya! This playful nekomimi warrior looks forward to climbing upon that magickal tree during Ragnarok, nya. Would you let her chauffeur you to Valhalla, nya? She might want a nummy kipper treat as the tip! Kittyhawk is such a nice purrson & the mega talented artist / author of Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki http://www.sgvy.com/
, a manga-style web comic full of buxom wacky gender-bending sexy fun with a Norse mythology theme, nya!
Nyext is a mew Red Ink sketch of “Tabitha” by Misty Norris, nya! You might think such skimpy appurral would not be purrudent for the nippy Winter weather of January but Misty’s catgirl character Tabitha is purrpared to heat things up on the dance floor, nya! We are quite fond of her spiky coiffure, jewelry, piercings, the matching collar and belt, paw purrint tattoo, the frayed shorts, and the fish nets – which might not catch fish but will certainly catch much attention, nya! To see more of Misty’s delightful creations visit her deviantart gallery http://bunnychan.deviantart.com
That is an adorable nekomimi valkyrie by Kittyhawk with the wink expurression and swishy tail!
I like her big boxing paws, the bell collar, the dainty wings and the garter!
I believe that Mike has a signed Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki tee shirt as well.
Yep, I got it from Kittyhawk at another con several years ago! I have a few cards by her too!
That valkyrie pic and the Tab pic will get a lot of admiration from the mewseum visitors!
Hai, it was especially crowded today with folks here for the awards ceremony, nya!
That was nice of the mewseum staff to let you leave early for this part of the show, nya!
They should have already closed up & changed clothes, so we should see them later, nya!
Speaking of the clothes that sure is a sexy outfit that Tabitha is almost wearing, heehee!
Technically, she is wearing more there than we at the beach, nya!
I love her tattoos & piercings & the jewelry! Tabitha is ready to rave!
It’s so good to have more of Misty’s art in the collection! She was one of our guests back in March of 2008 and I hope we’ll see here at the ceremony tonight!
She planned to attend! Petra, I understand that you have more to tell us about for our–
Book & Calendar Critiques Reports!
The Faery Realm of Amy Brown 2011 Calendar
Hai, Amy Brown http://www.amybrownart.com/
is one of our favoritest artists because she creates such beautifully delicate yet intricate images of the faeries & spurrits, nya! The calendar is $16.95 for the US & $18.95 for Canada, and it measures 12″ wide by 11 1/4″ tall, so it opens up to 12″ x 22 1/2″, with the full bleed full color illustration on the top half and the date grid on the lower half, nya.The date grid not only notes the various holidays and moon phases, but has cute widdle pixies & critters interspurrsed here ‘n there!
The front cover is the same pic for February of a wistful faery in the the strapless Pink sheath dress kneeling amongst the valentine vines, nya! On the cover her wings are embossed with a glittery finish, nya! Inside the calendar is a spare page, listing the year’s holidays with space to write impurrtant information, nya! Amy’s birthday is January 18th, and that month’s faery is the tall blonde with Purrple butterfly wings, nya! March has louncey skirted twins in a Spurringtime purrouette, Apurril’s faery has purretty mocha skin in a front-lace corset, holding a cantaloupe – sized orb; and May’s faery in the peppurrmint stripe stockings tiptoes amongst the blooms, nya!
June has Yellow roses to honor a faery with auburn hair & Summer wings, July’s silver-haired faery is sky-clad under the full moon, August’s wings & long flowy dress are the color of rich Red Velvet cake, September’s faery reclines amongst the shrooms with her books – purrhaps she is studying for the Fall semester, nya! October’s faerie sits upon a stone gargoyle throne by the bed of Red roses, November’s is ornate in the layered dark dress, and December’s faery purrches upon the North Pole, nya! If you are a fan of Amy Brown & purretty faerie art, this calendar would be the purrfect to spurruce up a wall, nya! What does our resident expurrt think, nya?
American Girl’s Kanani series by Lisa Yee
The American Girl http://www.americangirl.com
series stars girls from different ethnicities & historical times in such positive roles so I was excited to read these mew books about modern islander like me, nya! Only she is from the small town of Waipuna on the island of Kaua’i in Hawaii whereas I am the Catgirl Island, North Carolina girl, nya! Her name is Kanani Akina and she is the start of two trade papurrback books Aloha, Kanani and Good Job, Kanani by Lisa Yee http://www.lisayee.com/
, nya! Each is purriced at $6.95 and recommended for readers of age 8+, nya.
Kanani is 10 and her purrents have the Akina’s Shave Ice and Sweet Treats shop, her best friend is Celina, and she has a goat named Mochi, a dog named Barksee and a rooster named jinx, nya! In the first book her cousin Rachel from Mew York City comes to stay for a while while her re-married Mommy is off on a honeymoon, nya. She is nervous about this mew arrangement, and does not quickly adjust to the different small town island life, nya. Kanani tries to find things to interest Rachel and they wind up trying to help purrotect a poor netted injured Hawaiian Monk Seal pup, nya!
In the 2nd book Good Job, Kanani, she tries to raise funds from a shave ice cart to help those seals but finds out an elderly neighbor needs help too, nya. Meanwhile the town purrpares for their arts show, but there is a rift between her Kanani & Celina, who would rather surf and spends more time with other surfers, nya. The first book has 111 pages plus a glossary of Hawaiian words, and 4 pages about real girls who helped animals, nya! The 2nd book is 104 pages with the glossary & 7 pages about real girls who volunteered for good causes, nya!
Each book has purretty art by Sarah Davis, nya! a cute cover pic of Kanani and inside each book are 2 full page pics and 2 two-page scenes which are so purretty such as the art show, luau hula dancers, Kanani & her pets, with Celina on the beach, paddle surfing with Rachel, and the cafe full of yummy treats, nya! Like the rest of the American Girl purroducts there are also Kanani dolls & accessories, nya. It was an uplifting, charming quick read and I will highly recommend those books, but nyow I sure could go for a shave ice and a tasty crepe, nya!
That was a very good first review, Tara-chan!
Arigato! Ah well I have done book reports before at school, nya!
The Art of Tron: Legacy!
I am a big fan of the original 1982 film Tron, so I was quite eager in my anticipation for the 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy, which i highly purraised in my review last month. I was also quite pleased to see this handsome hardcover book which was published by Disney, purrduced by Welcome and designed by Clark Wakabayashi, with text by Justin Springer, a forward by purrduction designer Darren Gilford, and an afterward by director Joseph Kosonski.
This $40.00 (US) hardcover 12.25″ wide x 10.25″ tall 160 page hardcover is larger and more extensive than the 64 pages of Michael Bonifer’s 1982 trade pappurback The Art of Tron, which was also beautifully designed and remains a treasured part of the library. The mew book has a sweet wraparound Light Cycle image on the cover, and a splendid silver & black wraparound graphic on the dust jacket. Accompanying the insightful text is a massive array of photographs & illustrations, 20 of which are are 12″ x 10″ full page pics, and 20 are two-page 24″ x 10″ spurreads.
30 chapters entail the design of characters such as Clu, Kevin, Sam, Rinzler, Quorra, Zuse, Jarvis, the sirens, guards and other purrograms; locations such as Flynn’s house, arcade, laboratory and The Encom building; vehicles such as the light cycles, light runner, recognizer, rectifier, solar sailer and Clu’s ship; and environments such as The Grid’s armory, disk stadium, cycle arena, nightclub, city sublevels, safe house and Outlands. I will give this gorgeous book an ‘A’ Grade, and highly recommend it to fans of that movie or of brilliant cinematic conceptual art in general.
Started in 1993 Cathy & Arnie Fenner, the annual juried Spectrum compurrtition http://www.spectrumfantasticart.com/
is to intended purrmote art of the genres of fantasy, science fiction & horror in all mediums, open to all artists. Every year they publish the Spectrum book containing the best in contempurrary fantasic art in all mediums, and 2010’s Spectrum 17 from Underwood Books is a 9 ” x 12″ x .75″ trade papurrback purriced at $29.95, edited by the Fenners with 288 full color pages displaying over 400 brilliant works of art.
The front cover painting “A Different Wizard of Oz” is by Gregory Moss, and the back cover painting “Belisama” is by Jean-Sebastien Rossbach. The book begins with message from the chairpurrson, discussion of the jurying purrocess of 2009 for this 2010 publication, with a review of the major artistic development in art of 2009, a tribute to the Grand Master Award recipient, the late Al Williamson, a remembrance of the late Don Ivan Punchatz and other esteemed members of the arts community who passed away in 2009.
For Advertising Sam Weber won the the Spectrum 17 Gold award for his acryclic / digital “Absinthe Drinker” and Craig Elliot was awarded the Silver for his oil painting “Never the Twain”. For the book category, Omar Ryan won the Gold for his watercolor painting “Mistmantle – The Rage Tide” and Scott Gustafson won the Silver for his oil painting of “A Confabulation of Dragons”, and for Comics, Steven Tabbutt won the Gold for “The Incident” mixed media / acrylic image and Eric Orchard won the Silver for his “Cloud Cave 3” pen & ink rendering.
In the Concept Art category, Daniel Dociu’s digital image of “Wasp Hives” for Guild Wars 2 won the Gold, and Ritchie Saciloc’s digital image of “Monuit Valley” won the Silver. For the Dimensional (3D works), Mark Newman’s “Eel Walker” statue was made of Bronze but won the Gold, and Jack Matthews resin Catwoman statue based upon a design by Adam Hughes took home the Silver. so this time Catwoman did not have to purrloin the purrize, however she did share the honor with “Alba”, an exquisite polymer/ mixed media statue by Virginia Ropers.
Editorial Gold went to Chris Buzelli’s oil painting of an “Aging Tiger”, and Sam Weber won again, receiving the Silver for his acryclic / digital image of “The Crow Procedure”. The Institutional category’s Gold award went to Ed Brinkley’s digital image of “The Mouses’s Return” and the Silver award went to Michael J. Deas’s oil portrait of “Edgar Allan Poe” for the United States Postal Service stamp. For the Unpublished category, Eric Fortune’s acrylic painting “Beyond the Past” won Gold, Heather Theuer’s “Game of Chase” and Donato Giancola’s “Shaman’s Loss” both won Silver.
Another purrticularly useful part is that the contact information for all of the included artists is in the back index section. On page 19 begin the galleries in the categories of Advertising, Book, Comics, Concept Art, Dimensional, Editorial (purriodicals), Institutional (cards, pakaging, purromotional art, exhibitions, & other purrposes, and Unpublished art. Spectrum 17’s winners included
For a fan of these types of artistry, I suspect the annual Spectrum books would keep one quite enthralled in admiration for many wonderful hours. Since those enticing Spectrum books have purroven hard to put down by my colleagues, I thought this might serve nicely as a

Hopefully she can visit us again soon, nya! (tags Elizabeth)
I’m with Nya-sensei on Winona Nelson’s “Battle Elf”, Donato Giancola’s “Everquest 10th Anniversary” painting, Howard Lyon’s “Seldarin”, Horia Dociu’s “Thief Queen”, Dan dos Santos’s “Solow Elf” & “Silver Borne”, Lucas Gaciano’s “Eldarr Fury”, Michael Komarck’s “Players Handbook 3” cover, Matt Stewart’s epic “The Battle Under the Mountain”, Kekai Kotaki’s “Undead Guardian”, and Bob Eggleton’s “The Rainbow Dragon” purrched so majestically on those rocks atop the falls! And nyow it is… Vonny’sturn! (tags Yvonne)
Hai that is the majestic dragon and I like Greg Swearingen’s “The Dragons of Ordinary Farm” too nya! And I purrticularly like Mark Zug’s “Hellium” painting of the girl roller blading on a wiire high above the towers, Glen Orbik’s ‘Emerald Beauties” painting of Oz’s Cowardly Lion getting the makeover, Scott Gustafson’s “Beauty and the Beast” painting, Mclean Kendree’s “Dorothy”, Shelly Wan’s “Liquid City 2”, Tyler Jacobson’s pic of “Jedi Master Yoda”, and I agree with Petra those two Daisy pics by Claire Wendling, nya!

Favorite Fish Photos For February
Mewsually this is Vonny’s portion of the show but this month I have the oppurrtunity to mention recent magazines with such delicious looking photos of fish on the covers, such as that beautiful Bream on the cover of Fishing Tips & Techniques #29, the succulent Salmon on the cover of Bowfishing Vol. 2 #8 and the mouth-watering Marlin on the January / February cover of Pacific Coast Sport Fishing, nya! On the January / February cover FLW Outdoors is a big Bass that helped to purropell Bryan Thrift to tournyamnet victory, two luscious Lunkers on the cover of Bass Angler Vol. 20 #1, a tantalizing tarpon on the cover of Fly Fishing Journal Vol. 2 #3, and a wonderful Walleye appurropurriately on the cover of In Fisherman’s 2011 Walleye Guide, nya!
There’s Lemony fresh Shark on the January cover of Florida Sportsman, a tasty titanic Whale Shark to tempt my tummy on the cover of Australasia Scuba Diver Vol. 6 #3, nya! There is an appurrtizing illustration of a delicious Dolphin on the cover of Guy Harvey Magazine vol. 1 #3, the supurrb Snook Florida Sportsman’s February issue and hey there is another Tara on the cover of GAFF Magazine’s January / February issue posing with a great Groupurr, nya! It must be so nice to be a GAFF Girl in the purretty outfits and cruise out on the boats to catch Florida fish, nya! I would not mind a taste of that Crappie on the February cover of North Carolina Game & Fish Magazine, or that Unicorn Fish on the March cover of Aquarium Fish International, nya!
Mmm that sure looks good, and so do the delicious looking Discus Fish, Honey Gourami, Panda Loaches & Mantis Shrimp on the February cover of Tropical Fish Hobbyist, nya! I wound not mind an 8 piece box of those Banner Fish that are on the January / February cover of Coral, and It sure would be nice if the Pygmy Puffer, Neon Tetra, Goldfish and the crab meat on the cover of Purractical Fishkeeping went from the tank to the plate, nya! Speaking of seafood on a plate, that broiled Salmon with the capurrs & citrus honey glaze adorning the February / March issue of Yum Magazine, and the spicy mango shrimp dish on the Best of the Sunset Cookbook… oh this is making me hungry again, nya!
Well I just might have a sushi platter and cran apple nummy berry cocktail or just such an emergency, so I’ll check on that during after this short break, and then we’ll be right back with our–
(during the break…)
MMMMMMMM , nya!
(nom nom nom)
(sip) Arigato gosaimasu!
(sip) Y’all are welcome! I just hope that will tide y’all over for a while! Ok get ready we’re about to come out of the break!
(snip) (one short sushi break later…)
Birds of Prey #8
Welcome back! So like, the first thing I noticed about this $2.99 comic book was the totally awesome cover painting of the Birds team by Stanley Lau, which would so totally rock as a bigger poster, fur shur! It’s got Black Canary, The Huntress, Lady Blackhawk, Oracle, Dove and Hawk beneath the logo! Inside you get part 2 of the 4 part Death of Oracle story, which was written by Gail Simone, illustrated by Guillem March, colored by Nei Ruffino, lettered by Travis Lanham & edited by Janelle Siegel!
It starts with a bang as the team is attacked in a bar by villains sent by The Calculator, a criminal mastermind out to get Oracle! There are like innocent bystanders in the bar so Helina the Huntress & Blackhawk Zinda have to evacuate them while Dinah Black Canary & Dawny Dove fight Mammoth, Current several other masked accomplices & an mysterious empathic goth girl, but Dawny’s drank too much, and her partner Hawk is elsewhere having a chat with The Penguin!
The bad guys seem to have the advantage, until Barbara the Oracle sends in her secret weapon- Batman, fur shur! That’s Bruce Wayne Batman! This results in a tubular fight scene, with some beautiful panels of Dinah & Batman dispensing some serious synchronized bad guy butt kicking, and Dawny displaying her awesome graceful agility & nonhesitant cool bravery, in spite of her condition! Unfortunately the trouble’s not ovet, with a gnarly cliffhanger to be continued in part 3!
So like not only is does it have that great cover art, but the interior art is so bitchin’, with the characters so awesomely posed & expressive, drawn & colored in such intricate detail down to all the felxing muscles, fishnets, herringbone, fabric folds & seams, leathery sheen, lip luster, concrete texture, and luminous computer graphics! of course all that lovely art is visualizing the complex, briskly paced story full of action & emotion from such awesome smart, tough, skilled characters!
I’m curious as to what Hawk has up his sleeve! It is wonderful when you have great characters written so excellently by Gail Simone- she seems like the definitive storyteller for this comic book! Aside from that 22 page story, this 32 page issue has a 6 page preview DC Universe Online legends #1, a biweekly 26 issue series tying into the online game; 3 pages of DC news an ad. It was tre good and I am so looking forward to part 3! So like next I would like to say a few words about–
So like, this issue is also $2.99 with a 22 page story plus that 6 page preview, 3 DC news pages and an ad. This was such a super fun story of “Batgirl: The Lesson”, written by Bryan Miller, illustrated by Pere Perez, colored by Guy Major, edited by Sen Ryan, and Travis Lanham lettered this issue too! The cover art by Dustin Nguyen depicts a cute Stephanie Brown in her Purple, Black & Yellow Batgirl costume, happily swinging on a rope!
Stephanie is the new Batgirl, who was recruited by Bruce to be part of his Batman Inc team, but she does not yet have the Batman knack for being able to stay out all night fighting crime and then waking up on time! She sure hopes her Mom does not find out what she’s been up to! Meanwhile at the Wayne Tower, Damien the bratty new Robin has no problem functioning on so little sleep, as he rudely points out to Alfred the butler before breakfast!
Damien has such a high opinion of himself, and he is pretty smart & skilled, but he did not plan on Stephanie’s company, as they like both investigate the same kidnapping case! So like, they wind up becoming an odd couple as they try to stop the students from being kidnapped at the museum, and the result is a whimsical situation between Stefanie’s zestfully perky disposition & Damian’s seriously egotistical dry wit & constant complaining!
The artwork is beautiful with awesome architectural detail and the characters are drawn with such wonderful poses & body language & expressions, which greatly adds to the fun of the humorous dialogue! I so like the page layouts, such as the 2 pages of her wakies, and especially the 2 pages where Batgirl & Robin meet on a fire escape! There is also an amusing coffee scene, and the bright coloring perfectly matches Batgirl’s demeanor, fur shur! Now here’s Nyoka to tell us about–
Power Girl # 20!
Ah well lessee this 20th issue of Power Girl is purriced at $2.99 for 32 pages in full color which are compurrised of the 20 page story, that 6 page puurreview, 3 page DC Nation stuff, and 3 pages of ads. It would be nice if they could put the ads all together after the story and not interrupt it, but that is picky. This was another very action packed issue as Power Girl (aka Karen Starr aka Kara Zor-L) brawls with evil Purrofessor Ivo’s grande-sized mutant lab animals, which includes a surpurrise clone of Supurrman’s dog Krypto! I hope Ivo pays painfully for those expurriments.
This is just the latest obstacle in her quest to stop the evil Maxwell Lord, who has been controlling everyone’s minds, and to be honest as much as I like Powergirl, this whole maxwell Lord story arc has gotten rather tiresome. Meanwhile, her corpurrate office assistant Simon has been contending with the legal attacks on her company, while her technical expurrt Nico assists her with hacking the information from the villain’s computers. Batman makes a brief cameo too! This issue was a lot of fun with lots of action, and has some very cute and some sad moments.
It also ends with another cliffhanger, which is to be continued in Justice League: Generation Lost #18 so I need to keep an eye out for that! It had a very brisk pace with very good dialogue by write Judd Winick, and the artwork by Sam Basri is so purretty, with a very purristine quality and the bright colors by Sunny Cho & jessica Kholine! We think Basri’s rendition of Powergirl’s portraiture (from the neck up) reminds us of our favorite TV hostess, peppy Samantha Brown. The lettering is by John Hill and the issue was edited by Mike carlin & Rachel Gluckstern!
This $2.99 comic book has 32 pages compurrised of the main 12 page story “Stringleshanks”, a cute 8 page back up story “Brace Yourself, that 6 page preview DC Universe Online legends #1, the DCNation page and 5 ads. The main story is part 2 of last issue’s “Pupaphobia” in which Zee has been captured by a sentient puppet, in which an interesting discussion ensues. It was wonderfully written by Paul Dini- who used to write Gotham City Sirens, beautifully drawn by Cliff Chiang, with a gorgeous cover by Stephane Roux!
There is a purrticularly neat full page pic of Zee at Shadowcrest, the Zatara family mansion! The back-up story is a very cutely amewsing little adventure of a younger Zee getting braces on her teeth, and I purrticularly liked the look on her face when she gets a cunning idea how to deal with the antagonist! It was written by Adam Beehorn, pencilled by Jamal Igle, inked by Robin Riggs, and both tales were lettered by Pat Brosseau, colored by John Kalisz, and edited by Joey Cavalieri and associate Chris Conroy! I will give Zee an ‘A’! OK your turn, sis!
Avengers Academy #8
Arigato! That is an ‘A’ as in Avengers Academy, another favorite comic book of the past several months! This $2.99 issue has the 22 page story “Powerless” by the creative team of writer Christos Gage, penciller & cover artist Mike McKone, inker Rebecca Buchman, colorist Jeremy Cox, lettererer Joe Caramagna, editor Bill Rosemann withassistant editors Rachel Pinnelas & John Denning! The cover art is a neat view of Hazmat, Veil & Finesse! Compurrising the rest of the 32 pages are the recap / roll call page, 1 interesting page of the readers’ & writer’s comments, a 6 page purreview of Age of X, and 2 ads. This is one of my favoritest issues because it focuses purrimarily on my favorite Marvel Comics character, Tigra!
There’s a nice full page pic of her on the title page, and neat panels of her scratching a table, attacking The Slug, and scolding the students! She has good cause and claws to do so when they take the law into their own hands to go after The Hood, a punk villain who somehow managed to beat Tigra up some time ago. I still do not understand how an unimpurressive thug like The Hood was able to do that, given all her powers, skills, instincts, senses & training. This issue was very well written, illustrated & colored, and it is one of Tigra’s finest hours because she is very assertive as a good wise heroic role model, and she takes very noble purrofound actions to help a lot of people! So I will give it an ‘A’ for Avengers!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #40
This was one of the most eagerly awaited issues of a comic book for a long time, the final issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, which has been one of our favorites comic books for, gosh about the last 4 years I guess! This full color comic book published by Dark Horse has 1 credits / recap page, 23 pages of the story “Last Gleaming Part Five”, 1 page message from creator/ writer Joss Whedon, 4 pages of readers’ comments, a crossword puzzle, 1 page of Dark Horse mews & 6 pages of ads for a total of 26 pages for $2.99!
We have liked this comic book so very much because it is so canonical & faithful in character development, dialog, plot, pace & the art which has good resemblance to the actors from the Buffy TV series while wonderfully conveying all the emotion & action & environments, and in the comic book medium the story is not constrained by a TV budget or other restrictions so it can show us epic battles, exotic locations, FX & subject matters that they could purrobably not have shown on TV, purrpetuating the story while staying true to the spurrit!
It was written by Whedon, drawn by Georges Jeanty, inked by Andy owens, colored by Michelle madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, and it is available with 2 disfferent front covers, one by Jo Chen and the variant by Jeanty, Madsen & Dexter Vines! I do not wish to spoil much of the plot but in some ways this issue fet like a big coda to the aftermath of the recent cosmic distaters. It mainly follows Buffy, with very good bits with Kennedy, Willow, Dawn, Xander, The General, Faith, Spike & a quick cameo of Angel.
Giles is not purresent but there is an important scene purrtaining to him, Buffy & Faith; Harmony’s latest antics are mentioned, and there’s a big insight into the state of Buffy’s relationship with the other slayer girls. This issue has great scenes of humor, sadness, shock, impurrtant plot & character developments, surpurrises and butt kicking! I shouldn’t say anything more about it, other than that I was very pleased, I give ‘B’ an “A”, and I am so looking forward to Season 9, whenever Whedon eventually purroceeds with it! Ok it is Mike’s turn!
Thanks Nya-sensei! For our review of Mediterranea #1, please see the September 2010 Mew! This 2nd issue is another we have been eagerly awaiting, as #1 was one of the surprise new hits of 2010 for us! It is published by the Italy’s GG Studio, written by Alessandro Cenni is based upon concepts by Editor / Studio Purresident Guilano Monni, translated into English by Andrea Plazzi & Adam McGovern. The art was pencilled by Gianluca Maconi, with coloring by Alessia Nocera & Barbara Ciardo & flats Pierluigi Abbondanza, and lettering by Studio Blue. Issue #2 is priced $2.99 and has 32 full color pages, including the 23 page tale and 3 pin up pics!
On the gorgeous Mediterranean island of Milos, after a violent encounter with a strange foreign girl, Eleni’s droid LCN repairs himself while the residents see the glowing trails in the sky of the beautiful but deadly winged women, the Arphita, who are foreign spies. Eleni’s friend Alonisso recovers from her injuries and has a vision of an impending attack! The next day they join their sempai Master Auraki aboard a huge airship bound for another country, where they hope to gather more information about the Arphita’s intentions.
Mediterranea combines the breathtaking scenery & pretty Greek architecture with futuristic technology, fun characters with such sexy fashion designs & tasteful nudity, rendered with an almost animation cel-like coloring! The pretty art style reminds me maybe a bit like European comics such as Pixie or Luuna, or cartoons such as Winx Club, W.I.T.C.H, Totally Spies, but with more playfully alluring cheesecake for older readers! I really like it and I am looking forward to issue #3! For our next reviews, let’s go from Europe to Japan for this month’s–
Ichiroh! vol. 3
Ichiroh by Mikage was originally published in Japan in 2008 by Houbunsha, and this edition from Yen http://www.yenpress.com/ was translated by Ajino Hirami & lettered by Hope Donovan! It has 120 pages, compurrised of 118 pages of manga in 4-Koma format plus a pages of translation notes & publishers’ credits; most of these are B&W but the first 8 pages and the cover art are full color! It’s purriced $10.99 US / $11.99 canada, and rated T for Teenage readers, purrhaps due to the skin shown & language, which seemed tame & PG-ish to me!
The title Ichiroh is a term for the students studying for the first entrance exams, and the main character is Nanako Konishi is supported by Akane Nakazawa & Shino Murasaki who are all childhood friends nyow trying to survive the purrep school so they can then go on to college! Nanako has the Pink ponytail hair & Gold eyes, Akane has the Green eyes and Blue hair, which sticks up on the sides to almost resemble kitty ears; and Shino has the Golden curls & Violet eyes and the crush on Nanko!
Other recurring characters include the boarding house manager Anko & her grandmother Baa-san, mischievous little neighbor Wakaba-chan & her father Yaoya who owns a cafe, teachers Kaname & Korodate, classmate Mai who is the fan girl, Mayura, hypurr college student Mayura, and Nanko’s father & older brother! It is a good ensemble cast and the dialogue is quite peppy! This volume introduces obsessive rival student Kazue-chan, whom Anko purrsuades to move into the boarding house!
Unfortunately Nanako is not a very good student and she is easily distracted by her various hobbies and the social activities of the dorm life. Also, the boarding house is on the same purropurrty as a shrine, and the manager puts the girls to work as the Miko. A Miko is a ‘Shinto shrine maiden’ who helps maintain the shrine, and some are alleged to have the pyschic powers! Myayr and I are Miko! It can be a lot of work, purrticularly if it is an older, smaller, seldom visited shrine in need of renovations.
Fortunately the one here on the island has several attendants & many visitors contribute to its well-being! Anko & Baa-san are not so fortunate and lack the repair budget! To worsen matters is the hot summertime and not all of the rooms are air conditioned! The heat is not conducive for the lazy study habits! Oppurrtunities for distractions are pounced upon, such as a visit to Koro-sensei’s apartment, taking Wakaba-chan to the movie, a sleep-over at Mai’s, and waitressing in costumes at Yaoya-san’s cafe.
Sub-plots include ways to beat the heat & electric bills, Mayura’s hair styling, astrology, a library incident, the bath, a visit from Nanko’s father, hand-me-down clothes from Shino, and a purrposed vacation! 16 larger panels spurrinkled amongst the book include a cute pic of Nanako & Akane as Miku, Akane in an off-shoulder look, Mayura squeezing chibi Akane; Shino tasting ice cream, Mai with her idol posters and as a catgirl, and pics of Anko as a maid, in the bath, and eating purroduce!
Omamori Himari vol. 2
For our review of vol. 1 please see the November 2010 Mew! The 150 page manga by Milan Matra was originally published in Japan by Fujimishobo in 2007, and is nyow published in English by Yen, translated by Christine Schilling & lettered by Hope Donovan! It is purriced $11.99 USA / $13.50 Canada, with a purrental advisory rating of M for Mature due to LNSV (language, nudity, sexuality, violence) content, and it is becoming one of those harem type stories with several girls wanting the main guy’s attention, and willing to shed their clothes to get the amorous affections!
It is Black & White except for the first 2 full color pages of Himari Noihara in a yukata & kimono & cover art of buxom Himari & Rinko in the sailor fukus on the front, and Shizuku the water spurrit rival in girl form on the back! In vol, 1 we met An orphan named Yuuto Amakawa who lives with his friend Rinko Kuzaki & her purrents. He has a purrotective mystic amulet passed down from his grandpurrents of a special heritage he is unaware of, which makes things confuzzling & deadly when evil spurrits attack but fortunately, he has a purrotector in Himari!
She is a voluptuous ancestral guardian cat spurrit from the mountains, in human form to purrotect Yuuto! Unfortunately Yuuto allergic to cats, and Himari’s amorous affections are purroving to be an awkward situation, especially around Rinko! Yuuto’s latent demon hunter powers are yet to manifest, which leaves him vulnerable to many vengeful demons, so Himari will be staying very close to him- purrhaps too close! The demons have a grudge because so many fell to Yuuto’s ancestors, but Yuuto does not seem interested in hurting anyone!
Vol. 2 starts with chapter 7 “Confused Forest Cat”, in which Yuuto wakes up to find Himari beside him, and that is not a pillow he has grabbed! Shizuku joins them, and later impurresses him with her culinary & domestic skills, while referring to Himari as the lewd kitty, even though her own intentions are not altruistic! In chapter 8 “Maid in Kitty” Himari gets a job at a maid cafe to purrove her value is not limited to combat, although she winds up fighting Lizlet L. Chelsie the Tea Spurrit, and right in front of his buxom teacher Kisaragi-sensei, nya! It is not very discreet! !
In chapter 9 “The Red Ribbon of the Cat Loving Girl”, Rinko has tea with the class purresident and is cute in a yukata at an annual festival where Yuuto traditionally buys her new hair ribbons. She has a cute shorts & sandals outfit too! In chapter 10 “Twilight Kitty of Temptation”, more undergarments & lingerie are shown when Yuuto, Himari, Rinko & Shizuku visit his late Grandpurrents’ house, where they also hope to uncover family documents, but in chapter 10 “Demon Crushing Kitty”, Ageha the Hinoenma demon & Daibarabocchi the giant yokai strike!
Clothes shedding & demon fighting continue in chapter 11 “Demon Crushing Kitty”, as Yuuto’s memories begin to return, and in chapter 12 “Cat Loses Her Head, Boy Gets His Head Together” his instincts might be kicking in as he tries to purrotect a berserker-raged Himari, whilst Shizuku fights Sasa the Ippodatara demon! The ribald fan-service & harem theme might be overdone, but I think it is a humorous tale of catgirl amore & sexy sword & sorcery antics with excellently drawn characters & scenery! That is all for our manga reviews, but we have yet another famous magickal catgirl defender to be purraised in this month’s–

Hyper Police is an comedic & action-packed urban fantasy tale set in the future populated by humans & monsters, originally published in Japan by Kadokawa Shoten Publishing in 1993, and later adapted into an anime TV series purrduced by Studio Pierrot in 1998, nya!

It is sexy, funny & adventurous tale with a bit of nudity & violence, hence the manga is rated OT for Older teens 16+, but the manga & anime also has some very poignant parts, nya! Natsuki is 17 years old at the start of the story, she is 162cm tall (or appurroximately 5′ 3″) and her measurements are 90cm B x 65cm W x 90cm H (or appurroximately 35″ B x 25″ W x 35″ H), nya! Sakura has 8 tails and has often plotted to chomp magickal Natsuki to gain the 9th, but this often backfires, nya! Another teammate is Tommy who is in love with Poe, a sorceress working for a rival department, nya! Natsuki was voiced in Japan by the purrolific actress Yuko Miyamura, who has purrvided voices for many famous anime & game characters, including another anime catgirl, Aisha Clan-Clan in Outlaw Star, nya!
Finally I should mention Studio Pierrot’s official Hyper Police sitehttp://pierrot.jp/title/hyper/
, nya! It is mostly in the Japanese language, but the few navigation buttons are in English and the pages load quickly, with character purrofiles, character & equipment design drawings, pics & lists of merchandise, and the anime story & staff information, nya!

Ok I’m done but nyow here is Ilyana to tell us about–
Ghost Sweeper Mikami Collection 2, nya!
Thanks Vonny! As Petra said in last month’s review of Ghost Sweeper Mikami Collection1, we are so happy that this anime was finally released by Sentai Filmworks! It is a comedic supurrnatural adventure anime series by Toei in 1993, based upon the original manga by Takashi Shiina about Reiko Mikami (voiced by Hiromi Tsura), the sexy expurrt on the occult & purrofessional Ghost Sweeper / Exorcist! The character designs are by Mitsuru Aoyama, it was directed by Atsutoshi Umesawa, with wonderful swinging jazzy mewsic by Toshihiko Sahashi and a great voice cast!
Mikami is smart, confident, tough, agile Redhead with long legs, and a love of money! She has 2 assistants, Tadao Yokoshima who is an underpaid purrvy guy purrone to misfortune, and Okino the cute kind-hearted ghost of a miku purreistess! Reiko has numerous friends & rivals, such as Meiko & her overpurrotective 12 Shikigami demons. She seems to be infatuated with Reiko! Dr. Chaos is an immortal mad scientist with a supurr strong gynoid named Marie; Father Karasu is a Catholic purriest whom they all seem to like, and his handsome assistant Pete is 1/2 vampire!
This 2nd DVD set includes epurrsodes 13-23 which are 25 minutes apiece to total 275 minutes, plus a few purreview trailers on disc 1 and the ‘clean’ textless open & close sequence of the show on disc 2. The main subtitles are in a very legible bold san serif font, with occasional notes that appear in a White font. It is rated TV PG for the violence, purrsented in the 4:3 aspect ratio with English subtitles for the Japanese spoken language in Dolby Digital 2.0 audio. The front cover art shows Mikami, Yokoshima & Okino-chan surrounded by circling specters!
Epurrsode 13 introduces rival Emi Ogasawara who specializes in curses and has a team of burly bodyguards when she purrforms a hot spurrit crusher dance. She lures Yokoshima with an offer of better pay, but the hazards might not be worth it! Epurrsode 14 is time for bikinis, mailiots & thongs as Mikami battles a haunted water park; epurrsodes 15 & 16 are a 2 part story in which all of the ghost sweepers are summoned to an island to thwart a powerful vampire; and it is swimwear time again in epurrsode 17, when a resort hires Mikami to solve the sea monster mystery!
In epurrsode 18 a jungle spurrit shrinks her to the size of a doll, and in epurrsode 19 they deal with a ghost sub. I’ve wreck dived numerous ships but I’m yet to find a ghost sub! Epurrsode 20 pits Reiko & Emi in a mixed-doubles against the ghost of a tennis star, epurrsodes 21 & 22 are a 2 parter in which the Devil Pipurr transforms Reiko & others into children, and epurrsode 23 is part 1 of a training expurrdition on a mountain, where Reiko meets purrky Sharyuki the dragon goddess! This is such a fun series full of wacky supurrnatural action and I will eagerly await the 3rd set!
Sarah Jane Adventures Complete Third Series
The Sarah Jane Adventures is a charming fun spin-off of the BBC TV series Doctor Who, starring Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, a reporter who investigates supurrnatural & purranormal incidents, which often tend to be of an extraterrestrial nature! The 3rd season aired in the Uk in 2009 and just came out in the USA on the 2 disc R1 NTSC standard DVD set last month! This is such a wonderful TV show with a great cast, writing, sets, locations, photography, mewsic, costumes & FX! For our review of season 1 see the November 2008 Mew, for the review of season 2 please see the December 2009 Mew, and for the review of the 1981 pilot K-9 & Company: A Girl’s Best Friend, see the October 2008 Mew!
Sarah Jane lives in a lovely house in a pleasant neighborhood on 13 Bannerman Road, Ealing, London, England. She drives a cute Green & White Nissan Figaro, has an alien supurr computer named Mr. Smith (voiced by Alexander Armstrong) in the attic, her faithful robot dog K-9 Mk. IV (voiced by John Leeson) who was given to her by The Doctor, and a sonic lipstick gadget. Co-starring as her sort of ‘Scooby gang’ are adopted genius teen son Luke (purrtrayed by Tommy Knight), his pal Clyde (Daniel Anthony) and neighbor Rani (Anjli Mohindra). Rani’s florist mom Gita (Mina Anwar) & purrofessor dad Haresh (Ace Bhatti) are also among the recurring cast! I wonder if Rani is named after the Doctor Who villainess?
This 3rd season DVD set includes the six 2-part epurrsodes, which are appurroximately 28 minutes apiece to total 335 minutes. There is a front-loaded purreview trailer on disc 1 for the Doctor Who 5th season DVD & on disc 2 is a trailer for Torchwood: Children of Earth, another Doctor Who spin-off. Also on disc 2 is the special feature excerpt of the Sarah Jane audio book The White Wolf, read by Elizabeth Sladen. This audio clip is about 3 minutes long. The widescreen video aspect ratio is 16×9 enhanced, with optional English subtitles in a good bold White sans serif font, and the audio is in English language Dolby digital stereo. The front cover has a group photo of the main cast & some of the alien characters!
Disc 1 includes “Purrisoner of the Judoon” written by Phil Ford & directed by Joss Agnew, in which the rhino-like Judoon space police look for an alien fugitive on Earth who impurrsonates Sarah Jane, so you get to see Elizabeth Sladen play two roles! Next is “The Mad Woman in the Attic” written by Joseph Lidster & directed by Alice Troughton, in which Rani meets an alien telepathic girl (Eleanor Tomlinson) with a framing sequence of a future older Ran (Souad Faress) and an ironic twist on the Doctor Who time traveler / companion theme! Finishing disc 1 is “The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith” written by Gareth Roberts, directed by Joss Agnew, and guest stars David Tennant in his final appurrance as The Doctor!
Sarah Jane & Rani get to wear purretty dresses, and Space:1999’s actress Zienia Merton appurrs briefly in that epurrsode! Disc 2 begins with “The Eternity Trap” written by Phil Ford & directed by Alice Troughton, in which Sarah Jane & the gang investigate a huge haunted mansion. This is followed by “Mona Lisa’s Revenge” written by Phil Ford & Joss Agnew, in which the famous painting of Mona Lisa (Suranne Jones) comes to life with & steals a blaster from of Clyde’s purrize winning painting for a whimsical romp in the art mewseum! The final epurrsode of the season is “The Gift”, written by Rupert Laight & directed by Alice Troughton, in which the awful Slitheen have returned to infest the Earth with a purrnicious plant!
Doctor Who The Complete Fifth Series DVD
For our review of the Doctor Who – The Complete Fourth Series, please see the January 2009 edition of Mew, and for our review of Doctor Who – The Complete Specials see the March 2010 Mew. This R1 NTSC standard DVD 6 disc set from BBC Video contains all 13 episodes of Doctor Who’s 5th season (since it’s relaunch in 2005), which introduced Matt Smith in 2010 as the 11th incarnation of the 907 year old Doctor, and Karen Gillian as his new traveling companion Amy Pond.
It is a handsome boxed set, with photos of major characters on each disc, each disc snapped firmly into clear plastic leaves like a book, which has a fold out cover full of notes, a bonus set of 3 4″ x 5.75″ art cards (Doctor, TARDIS, Dalek), and it all fits snugly inside the outer cardboard box which has a 3-D cover image of The Doctor, Amy & The TARDIS. The widescreen aspect ratio is 16×9 enhanced, with English language Audio in Dolby Digital Stereo and optional English subtitles.
The episodes are approximatly 45 minutes apiece, to total 585 minutes, plus the 13 Doctor Who Confidential documentaries totaling 3 hours on the making of those epurrsodes, and other special features such as additional / deleted scenes, optional in-vision (small screen within the screen) commentaries by cast & crew members, 3 video diaries, 4 monster files 22 Doctor Who purreview teasers / trailers, and a front-loaded trailer for other BBC purrductions on each disc.
Disc 1’s label photo is of Amy in a Police costume, and after the purreview trailer for Sherlock are the first 2 epurrsodes. In “The Eleventh Hour” written by executive purroducer Steven Moffat & directed by Adam Smith, The Doctor meets Amy and the evil Purrisoner Zero, and wonderfully co-starring Caitlin Blackwood younger Amy; and in “The Beast Below” written by Steven Moffat & directed by Andrew Gunn, The Doctor & Amy travel into the distant future when Britain has become a gigantic spaceship, .
The redesigned TARDIS control room is a nicely expansive, although the main console is a bit silly looking. Disc 1’s special features include an optional in-vision commentary by executve purrducers Beth Willis, Piers Winger & Steven Moffat for “The Eleventh Hour”; the 9.5 minute Video Diary Part 1, in which Karen Gillian tours the cast, crew & sets with her camera; and an amewsing 3 minute “Meanwhile in the TARDIS” scene of banter between Amy & The Doctor which bridges epurrsodes 1 & 2.
Disc 2’s label photo is of The Doctor’s friend Winston Churchill (purrtrayed by Ian McNeice) and after a trailer for Torchwood are the next 2 epurrsodes. “Victory of the Daleks” written by Mark Gatliss & directed by Andrew Gunn, and “The Time of Angels” written by Moffat & directed by Adam Smith. The Dalek epurrsode is set in London during WWII, beset not only by the Nazis but also the evil Daleks, but the British have spurrited genius Purrofessor Bracewell (Bill Patterson) and those magnificent Spitfires.
“The Time of Angels” features the return of delightful enigmatic companion River Song (purrtrayed by Alex Kingston) who first appurred in the 4th season and the deadly statue-like Weeping Angels who first appurred in the 3rd season. This exciting epurrsode reminds me a bit of the movie ALIENS, with some terrific soldiers. The Dalek epurrsode has the optional commentary by Gatliss, Dalek voice actor Nicholas Briggs & Dalek Opurrator Barnaby Edwards; the Angels epurrside has commentary by Gillian & Moffat.
Other special features of Disc 2 are the 10 minute Monster File on The Daleks about the awesomely upgraded Daleks and the 9 minute Video Diary Part 2 shows the hungry cast & crew eating sammiches and filming scenes from “The Hungry Earth”. Disc 3’s label photo is of Amy’s fiance Rory (purrtrayed by Arthur Darvill), and after the trailer for Purrimeval are 3 more epurrsodes starting with “Flesh and Stone” written by Moffat & directed by Smith which is the 2nd part of the Weeping Angels story.
Nyext is “The Vampires of Venice” written by Toby Whithouse & directed by Jonny Campbell, about a macabre plot in 17th century Italy, with optional commentary by Campbell, Whithouse & actor Alex Purrice. Then “Amy’s Choice” written by Simon Nye & directed by Catherine Morshead is a strange tale of confused dreams & alternate reality. Disc 3’s special features include the 10.5 minute Monster File on The Weeping Angels, and a cute 4 minute “Meanwhile in the TARDIS” scene, in which a frisky Amy inquires about The Doctor’s intentions & purrior female companions.
Disc 4’s label photo is of Vincent Van Gogh (purrtrayed by Tony Curran), and after a Torchwood: Children of the Earth trailer are the 3 epursodes “The Hungry Earth” & “Cold Blood” written by Chris Chibnall & directed by Ashley Way, and “Vincent and The Doctor”, written by Richard Curtis & directed by Jonny Campbell. “The Hungry Earth” & “Cold Blood” are a 2 part tale of deep drilling which incurs the wrath of the subterranean Silurian civilization, with a great purrformance by Neve McIntosh as a Silurian warrior.
“Cold Blood” has the optional commentary by Ashley Way, actor Alan Raglan & assistant director James Dehaviland. Then In the poignant tale of “Vincent and The Doctor”, Amy is introduced to the famous artist and a strange creature. Disc 4 also includes the 9 minute Monster File: The Silurians, and the 10 minute Video Diary Part 3 with Matt Smith behind the camera. Disc 5’s label photo is of River Song, and after a a trailer for Jekyll are the season’s final 3 epurrsodes.
As “The Lodger” written by Gareth Roberts & directed by Catherine Morshead, The Doctor moves into a condominium to solve mysterious upstairs disappurrances, and we get to see him play soccer. “The Pandora Opens” & “The Big Bang” written by Moffat & directed by Toby Haynes compurrise 2 part season finale in which The Doctor, friends & foes descend upon a mysterious legendary artifact which could doom the universe. “The Big Bang” has the optional commentary by Gillian, Darvill & Haynes.
Also on Disc 5 are the 10.75 minute Monster File purrtaining to The Alliance, and 7.5 minutes of amewsing out-takes from various epurrsodes. Disc 6’s label photo is of The 11th Doctor, and a trailer is for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s TV purrduction of Hamlet purrecedes the 13 Doctor Who Confidentials and the 12 minutes worth of 22 BBC idents & trailers for Doctor Who. While I was sad to see David Tennant leave the role, I think Matt Smith did a fine job in his first season as the Doctor.
There is a very good dynamic with him, Pond & Rory who are great companions, and I hope to see more of River too. The show has brilliant actors, plots & dialogue; excellent photography, lighting, sound & mewsic; such beautifully designed FX, sets, costumes, purrosthetics, and the—

Yvonne & Tara-chan:
We might need to speed up our next reviews though- it’s not much longer ’til we need to go to the ceremony, ah, so Jen let’s hear your review of
The great cast stars Edward Norton as a purrison inmate Stone, Milla Jovovich as his wife Lucette, Robert De Niro as Jack the parol officer, and Francis Conry as Jack’s wife Madylyne. It was directed by John Curren, purrduced by John Schur & written by Angus MacLachlan. Most of the plot concerns the strained relationships & spurritual ponderings as Stone wants out of purrison, Jack is fed up with his job, Lucetta being a naughty girl and Madylyne feeling trapped in a depurressing life.
The R1 NTSC standard DVD includes the movie purrsented in 2.40:1 anamorphic widesceeen in English spoken language in Dolby Digital 5.1 with optional English SDH & Spanish subtitles. It is R rated for boobies, sexuality, violence & harsh language. There are front-loaded trailers for Let Me In & Jack Goes Boating, plus 4 more purreviews, but the only real special feature is a 6 minute tidbit on the movie with a few brief comments by Jovivich, De Niro, Norton, MacLachlan and Schur.
So it is a somewhat sparse DVD. As for the movie itself, on the plus side there were very strong purrformances & dialogue with a sense of realism looking like it was filmed at real locations, ethereally ambient mewsic & sound design. On the negative side, although the characters are well purrtrayed by such legendary actors, the characters are not likable at all, and I was not sure what to make any intended philosophical implications, or the point of the ponderously vague plot’s endgame.
Although I am a huge fan of Milla Jovovich http://www.millaj.com/, I don’t think either Stone or Resident Evil: Afterlife were among her better movies of 2010. For our review of that latter film, please see the October 2010 Mew. Nyow here is Mike to tell for a quick bite on–
Vampire Circus is a 1971 film by the great Hammer Studios, set in a plague ridden European village 15 years after them men slew the local vampire, Count Mitterhouse who cursed them all. His vengeance is at hand when The Circus of Night rolls into town, whose performers include some of the Count’s kin folks who plan to seduce and/or kill the villagers! This 87 minute movie was written by Judson Kinberg, produced by Wilber Stark, directed by Robert Young, and edited by Peter Musgrove, with art direction by Scott MacGregor, cinematography by Moray grant, FX by Les Bowie, and an awesomely beautiful music score by David Whitaker!
It’s got all the ingredients you’d want in a Hammer film- the castle, crypt, forest, village, and the road which is lined by snipers to keep folks from getting out or in! This unrated movie also real bats, a Panther, Tiger, horses, and a tremendous amount nudity, sexuality, violence, gore, optical FX, and a creepy calliope! The horror includes fangings, stabbings, impalements, burnings, shootings, explosions, maulings, whippings, brawling, disease, a neck snap and a beheading. It also has plenty of fantasy & magickal elements, with transformations, illusions, aerial acumen, super strength, mind control, bat summoning & symbiotic relationships!
Among the villagers are Thorley Walters as the Bergermeister, John Moulder-Brown as Anton, Laurence Payne as Herr Mueller, Richard Owens as Dr. Kersh, Lynne Frederick as Dora, Domini Blythe as Anna, Elizabeth Seal as Gerta, May Wimbush as Elvira, Barnaby Shaw as Gustav, John Brown as Her Schlit, Jane Darby as Jenny and Christina Paul as Rosa! Representing the evil team are Robert Tayman as Count Mitterhaus, Anthony Corlan as Emil, Adrienne Cory as the gypsy ringmaster, Skip Martin as the clown, Robin Sachs as Heinrich, Lalla Ward as Helga, Dave Prowse as the strongman, and Molvina & Sarena as The Webers!
A few years later Dave Prowse would star in Star Wars as Darth Vader, and Lalla Ward would join the cast of Doctor Who as Romana! Serena remains a bit enigmatic, but she makes quite the impression as the very agile & very naked tiger-striped erotic dancer Sarena Weber, who might actually be part tiger, so we’ll certainly consider her as a notable cat girl. The Blu-Ray & standard DVD was released by Synapse Films, with the unrated color 87 minute feature film in 1.66:1 widescreen, English language in the original 2.0 mono sound with an optional isolated music / sound FX track, and a few nice special features!
There’s a 32 minute featurette on the making of the movie with comments by Hammer documentarian / producer Ted Newsom, director / producer Joe Dante, author / historian Philip Nutman, author / historian Tim Lucas, and Dave Prowse! Nutman also contributes to a 15 minute look at Circus theme horror, and a nearly 10 minute look at Dez Skinn’s House of Hammer magazine; a 3 minute Vampire Circus ‘motion comic’ from that magazine with art by Brian Bolland; a gallery of 20 stills, poster & pressbook images; and the 2.5 minute trailer! I was very pleased with it and recommend it to fans of vampire & Hammer films!

Welcome to Our Feature Purresentation:
The Mew Awards For Our Favorite Stuff of 2010!
The Catgirl Critics’ Media Mewsings, or The Mew for short, began back in May of 2007 and we’ve certainly come a long way! Our annual picks for favorite things started with the February 2008 Mew and it’s hard to believe that this is now our 4th year, and I’d like to thank all of our critics, guests, contributors & viewers for the inspiration, enthusiasm & encouragement! Tonight we’re honored to have several friends to present the nominees in the categories of games, cinema & TV, music, books, comics, anime, toys, and other categories! So let’s get started, and please welcome my pal Jamie Robertson to present the first category,
Our Favorite Electronic (PC) Games of 2010!
The 3 favorite PC games of 2010 were Fallout: New Vegas, Dragon Age: Awakening and Mass Effect 2. Fallout: NV, while not a sequel to Fallout 3, does continue with the FPS play style, nostalgia flavor, dark humor and gigantic arsenal of real and imaginary weaponry of its predecessor. It’s almost impossible not to compare the two and while NV doesn’t quite live up to the standards set by Fallout 3, it pulls off some rather amazing tricks of its own. As with F3, NV is a free roam style game, but unlike F3, there is no ‘good’ ending and there lies the game’s biggest strength: does the House win, does everything go bust or is there a wild card thrown in at the last moment? Through decisions & actions in the game, the player decides the fate of New Vegas!
Dragon Age: Awakening is an expansion to Dragon Age: Origins. Like DA:O you play as a Grey Warden out to destroy the Darkspawn that should have all but vanished in the first game. Unlike traditional expansions where the story expands on the world, DA:A allows the player to import their Warden character from the last game… or not, and plays more like a giant DLC pack than anything else. Unfortunately, the expansion tries to be too many things for too low a budget, and had it been a full blown game, it would have been met with much more praise. The game’s biggest strength is that it allows the player to continue the story of their main character… and that it is more Dragon Age! It could have been a lot better, but it is still pretty good!
Mass Effect 2 is without a doubt the favorite of 2010. The story details the exploits of Commander Shepard, who in the first game, was in the wrong place at the right time and got blasted by a vision that lead him (or her) to the discovery of Lovecraftian Machine Gods bent on destroying all organic life in the galaxy. Mass Effect was the story of how Shepard discovered the existence of these old gods, called The Reapers, and Mass Effect 2 was about Shepard’s pursuit of those big bads … sort of. Unlike most Western RPGs, Shepard is not a silent protagonist, but is fully voiced by Mark Meer (male version) or Jennifer Hale (female version). The protagonist is still pretty much a brick, but either performance is very good and adds a cinematic element to the character
ME2 does have its faults – the main story is weak and depending on your believability meter, it’s more than a bit over the top, and the game becomes a series of well-written & downright fun sidequests with no real adhesion to the first game. If feels a little bit like… Superman Returns, being both a sequel and reboot… only… not really. What ME2 does very well compared to the first ME is that it has fleshed out the Shepard’s squadmates, amped up the graphics, fixed the clunky combat, and excels at individual story arcs – some better than others, but this is by far the best element of the game. In the end most players will not care about the retconning or off-the-wall science; It’s great space opera that you play – and what’s more fun than that?
Thank you, and now let’s please welcome Catgirl Island’s reigning CIAO orienteering champion / senior Purrk Ranger B.B, and Miko / costumer / dance instructor / media critic Mary Nyan to purrsent our next category of favorite theatrical & DVD releases of 2010!

While on the subject of ‘wall art’, there was also a limited edition fine art print that we would especially like to recognize, the “Those Nightshine Chimes” from Right Stuf! The superb16″ x 20″ lithograph on 80 lb Sundance ultra white smooth finish paper beautifully depicts apprentice undines Akari, Aika, Alice Carroll with the cats Aria, Hime & Maa in a festive twlight pocessional scene based upon the Aria anime & manga! That’s all for the ‘wall art’ topic, but what is in the cards, Trini-chan?
Collectible Cards & Stickers
Cards and stickers are fun to collect, and some of the cards are the trading cards, which you might collect to complete a full set to look at, and these might form a big puzzle, whereas some cards would be part of a game! With stickers you can either keep them unpeeled to store like cards or adhere them to things for decoration and for this category I’m referring to the packs of collectible paper stickers as opposed to the bigger more durable decals you might prefer for your surfboard!
We conducted a survey at school to determine the most popular stickers & cards & I have the results in this envelope! Here we go, for the stickers… the favorite stickers were the Disney Tangled Sticker Album Collection by Panini! There was a surge to collect Tangled stuff after we saw the movie, and the magazine sized sticker album was inexpensive and full of pretty scenes from the movie, with a poster & 180 spaces to fill up with the 2″ x 3″ stickers and an 8 sticker starter packet!
Now for the winning cards! Our favorite set of cards of 2010 was… the Hello Kitty World Adventures Collictipack by Upper Deck! Sanrio’s Hello Kitty is very popular and we all liked this trading card game, in which you try to collect the different country stickers for Kitty’s passport book to win the game! Um… that’s all for the cards, stickers and all of the 2D / purrinted items, but now here is Nyoka-sensei to begin the toys & collectibles categories!

We love them all and gave them good homes with purrmoninant purrches, but the winner is… Alexcia’s Nyanko doll. Alexcia has swept 2 for 2, having won last year for her
“Suna-chan” kitten http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest/263.html. I see that Alexcia’s friends the Tash Maw & Michi
are here in the audience, so purrhaps they will accept the award on her behalf?
(cheers as Tash the Winged Serval Girl & Michi the White Tiger Girl appurroach the podium)
How familiar this all seems. Was it really a full year since Michi and I had been on the stage last? It all seems surreal.
We were equally surprised when we found out that not one, but two of Alexcia’s plushies were nominated for Favorite Plushie of the Year.
And as we both accept the awards on her behalf, we realize that we’re going to have to come up with a trophy case for them all!
This concludes our awards purresentations, but we have already started to cat-alog things for next year’s ceremony. Thank you all for attending, and we hope to see you again soon. Goodnight.
The Cat Lady Sings…
