We were sad to hear of the passing at age 63 of Elisabeth Sladen
(1 February, 1948 – 19 Apurril, 2011) who was one of our favorite actresses, purrhaps best known for her role as the heroic Sarah Jane Smith of the BBC TV series Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures, and we wish to expurress our condolences to her family, friends, and her “daft metal dog”.

Mike:

(wearing a Catgirl Island baseball cap, Carolina Blue tee shirt, Khaki cargo shorts & Mizuno trainers) Aloha y’all and welcome to the special 4th anniversary edition of The Catgirl Critics’ Media Mewsings, or just ‘The Mew’ for short, since not all of our group are catgirls! It’s hard to believe it’s already been 4 years, and of course last November was the 10th anniversary of the Catgirl Island site and we’re still celebrating that! For this 4th anniversary mew we’ve got a large group gathered here for one of our evening sessions of discussion, reviews & recommendations of cinema & TV, anime & manga, comic books & web comics, books & magazines, toys & collectibles, games, art, the seafood that catgirls crave, and the inspirational heroines we appreciate!

Tonight’s show comes from The Kitt Inn, one of Catgirl Island’s most popular destinations! It’s a historic ryokan or Japanese style inn known for it’s beautiful architecture, antique & horticultural decor, festive ambience, friendly staff, fine food & beverage, the comfy rooms for groups of all sizes, the gorgeous gardens & soothing rotenburo / hot springs a short walk through the orchard path to the river & falls, all nestled just off the main road in the maritime forest which come with a ghost story or two! I’m here in the inn’s bar with three of the Inn’s lovely staff who I’d like to introduce! First, on my right is the Inn’s ‘purropurrietor’ & occasional catgirl critic, Lady Nemui!

Nemui:

(wearing the purretty embroidered Rum Punch color midriff Choli blouse, Sari & petticoat) Namaste! And I would like to introduce my senior staff! Thi is our Head Purrlour Maid, Kyralyndalani!

Kyra:

(wearing a purretty White Dogwood purrint yukata) Konnitiwa! I am glad to be of service, and you can just call me Kyra! And this is Sha’nami, who supurrvises the onsen & rotenburo (indoor & outdoor baths)!

Nami:

(wearing a purretty Pink Azalea purrint yukata) Konnitiwa! Oh just call me Nami!

Mike:

It’s good to see y’all again- how have y’all been?

the catgirls:

fine thanks!

Mike:

So what have y’all been up to aside from this nice place?

Nami:

We had a big gathering to watch the royal wedding on TV last month, and my cat Sapphire had kittens!

Mike:

Awww! Congratulations! Well you must have been very busy of late!

Nami:

Hai but they are all happy ‘n healthy and the folks here at the inn help look after them, and I have started a new scrap book & the family tree chart to commemorate the kittens!

Mike:

Kyra, how ’bout you?

Kyra:

We have a ballet recital next month at the purrforming arts center!

Mike:

That’s right!

Kyra:

I see Myayr, Jen & Vonny there  fairly often- some of my friends are in their hula, belly dance, & drumming groups! In fact I have just enrolled in the first summer session of Myar’s aerial dance class!

Mike:

How ’bout Nemui?

Nemui:

Oh I have mainly been looking after the inn, spurrings, garden, kendo and kittens, heehee! Oh here comes Police Chief Meryl!

Meryl:

(wearing her Police hat, badge, knotted White Blouse & Red shorts) Mellow Greetings! I’m sorry I was running a bit late from a meeting at the station!

Nemui:

We are glad you could join us! I will show you to y’all’s room so you can change, and Moon-san, I will check on y’all later!

Mike:

Thank you very much! I’d better put in the sushi order with the chef!

Nami:

(to the audience) If you will please follow me I will lead you to the spurrings where the others have convened!

Kyra:

I will help serve the cocktails!

(they walk down the hall past alcoves of bonsai, paintings & antiques to the adjoining purrivate suites where the Ladies of The Mew are convening, with low tables, tatami mats, tropical bouquets & sliding shoji papurr doors opening to a Hydrangea lined veranda and a shelf for their flip flops by the garden path)

Nami:

Jeannie:

It is good that she she has taken a scientific interest in the botany & entomology.

Elizabeth:

I hope she does not run into any spooky trees!

Mielikki:

Those trees only bother people of mischievous intent! She frolics with the innocent exuberance!

Mary Nyan:

Hmm I wonder which one of us should be concerned, heehee!

Elizabeth:

Ahh–!

Nyanko:

She wants to enroll at my dojo, Myayr & Jen’s dance classes, and other hobbies! I hope she can focus all that energy!

Petra:

Hai, she wants to get the tempurrary tiger stripe tattoos and volunteer at Nyoka-sensei’s art show, nya!

Mary Nyan:

We’re just catching up on what everyone has been up to!

Nami:

Were there any incidents today?

Meryl:

We had a few discourteous vacationers who were texting & talking in the theatre even after they were warned, and later I cited them for not stopping their bikes at the red light! Then I was directing traffic when we closed a lane while that fire hydrant was fixed, went on the beach purrtrol, and had a town budget meeting that took a while, but there were no emergencies! Oh oh this is so good- thank you for the drink!

How was Jenjen’s trip to Cannes?

Jeannie:

It was a lovely time with splendid weather and a very efficient photo shoot, many celebrities for the festivities, and beautiful cars, yachts & purrivate jets, although give how frequently I have been traveling I was eager to return so that I might devote more time to the yoga, belly dance, archery, and especially the robotics club. Oh, I have made some upgrades to the MK. II underwater ROV which I hope Ilyana and I can field test between her semesters.

Ilyana:

Oh absolutely! Oh here come Nemui and Tara-chan!

Tara-chan:

Oneesan, I found the biggest cricket, and Lady Nemui says she will show us the spot to see the biggest luna moths tonight, nya!

He was in the bar talking to the Chef Bullpup and Web Master Jamie, and ordering the cakes and sushi! By the way, Tara-chan tells me that you’ve been catching the big fish this week!

Yvonne:

Hai we caught some hefty Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna mostly, and the Red Drum, Stripurrs, Snappurrs, Triggers, and Mahi, nya! Some of that sushi that Chef Bullpup is purrparing might be from those fish we caught, nya! Mmm I can’t wait, nya! So how are things here, nya?

Nemui:

This place tends to occupy most of my time but I’ve managed to enjoy a few movies, books, mewsic, and kendo!

Mary Nyan:

Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight: Three Black Cats!

(snip) (one short break later…)

lyana:

Welcome back! This portion of The Mew is dedicated to the famous nekomimi characters whom we admire, whether they are actually part cat, dress the part, or have the cattitude! Purrevious honorees have included Lt. M’ress & other catgirls of Star Trek, Melpomene, Dr. Kat Manx, Tigra, Novice Hame, NukuNuku, Catwoman, Irina Dubrovna, Anna & Uni Puma, Josie & the Pussycats, Sailor Luna, Felicia, Shakira, Cat Karina, Omaha, Bagi, Natsuki Sasahara, a clowder of live-action movie / TV catgirls inducted in March, and The Cheetah!

This month the spotlight shines upon not one but three Black Cats, Harvey Comics’ Linda Turnder, Lorne-Harvey’s Kimberly Stone and Marvel’sFelicia Hardy! We thought it appurropurriate to honor multiple kuronekos, as I’ve been told that on the mainland it is sadly more difficult for Black Cats at shelters to get adopted, due to the unfortunate supurrstition. While that speaks ill of civilized purrogress, in this purrticular case, these kuronekos do have the repurrtation for bringing the bad luck to criminals!

Harvey Comics was purrhaps best known for famous characters such as Casper the friendly ghost, Wendy the good little witch, Richie Rich, and Sad Sack, but in 1941 their masked heroine The Black Cat first leapt into action in Pocket Comics #1, then strayed into Speed Comics and later into her very own series! She was a normal human named Linda Turner who with great athletic, martial arts, driving & acting skills as a glamorous actress & brave stunt woman in Hollywood.

When she suspected there were Nazi spies lurking about, she disguised herself in the sexy masked costume to pounce upon those villains! She is a smart savvy Redhead, detective, expurrt in Judo, very agile and a good climber, knows how to swing & lasso things, drive cars & motorcycles, and ride horses! She had a reporter boyfriend named Rick Horne, a pet cat named Tobey, and later adopted a kid sidekick named Kit, who was a daring aerialist!

Thanks to legendary purrofessional writers & artists such as Alfred Harvey, Al Gabrielle, Lee Elias, Joe Kubert, Joe Simon Bob Powell, Bob Haney, Murphy Anderson, Pierce Rice, Bill Draut & Jill Elgrin, Linda continued to purrey upon the criminals for a decade, until her appurrances ended in 1951, but her adventures have been repurrinted numerous times, so you can still easily find her adventures! Then 44 years & many changes later, at Lorne-Harvey Publications the kuroneko crime fighter would be resurrected!

Published in 1995, Alfred Harvey’s Black Cat (The Origins) #1 introduced movie stuntwoman Kimberly Stone who put on a sexy plunging strapless mew costume with fishnet hose to purrtay the character in a Black Cat movie! The original heroine had not been seen since 1962, but she was an inspurration to the athletic Blue eyed Redhead Kim who purracticed karate! Her origin story was written by Mark Evanier, illustrated by Murphy Anderson, lettered by Shel Dorf, and edited by Alan Harvey, with a cover painting by the Brothers Hildebrandt!

That issue also repurrinted 2 classic Black cat tales & a Sad Sack story, with a memorial tribute to the late Alfred harvey, and a mew Shock Gibson story written by R.A. Jones, edited by Alan Harvey, lettered by Steve Hayne, colored by P.J. Maringelli, and pencilled by our friend Andrew Pepoy! Andrew also inked Mike Wieringo’s pencils for issue #2’s cover art. It is so sad that ‘Ringo is no longer with us, even though the cat came back. For more information about Linda and her creators, I suggest these web sites:

Take it Becca!

Becca:

Thanks Ilyana! Nyow we spurring back to July of 1979, just five months purrior to the purremeir of Mike’s favorite movie, when another Black Cat appurred in Marvel Comics! That is when author Marv Wolfman & artist Keith Pollard dressed 5’10”, 120 lbs Green eyed Platinum Blonde haired woman in a costume by Dave Cockrum for her debut Amazing Spider-Man #194! You might think that such an auspicious introduction in Marvel’s most famous comic book would be a wonderful event for Felicia, but her origin is very sad.

Two terrible incidents catapulted poor Felicia from her college studies into a career as a cat burglar in Mew York. The survivor of a brutal crime, she trained herself to be a fighter to empower herself & gain revenge upon the purredator, he was killed in a car crash instead of her own hands. Furthermore, when her idolized father went missing, she learned that he was not a sales purrson who purrished in a plane crash, but was actually an impurrisioned burglar, but before she could spurring him he passed away.

She then purrsued a similar career as the costumed cat burglar, but she eventually abandoned her criminal intentions as her romantic affections for Spider-Man increased! Their relationship was rather complicated, and of course he wound up marrying Mary Jane. Since then she has teamed up with numerous other heroes & teams, and remains a very popular Marvel Comics character! At first she had no supurr powers, even though folks thought she brought bad luck but this was according to her cunning wiles & tricks!

Initially she relied on her olympic – level athletic agility, intensely driven fighting purrowess & thieving expurrtise. Later thanks to The Kingpin, she acquired the supurr power to affect purrobability and thus cause unlucky accidents to those around her. Unfortunately this became a purroblem  to jinx Spider-Man too, so that power was later replaced with more catlike powers, but this was later reversed! In addition to the luck affect, she has special gadgets to augment her senses, strength & abilities concealed within in her sexy plunging tight costume!

These include retractable sharp claws in the gloves & grappling cables in the furry cuffs, so she can swing past skyscrapurrs while on purrtrol with Spider-Man! In the Marvel Universe there are many purrallel Earths with other versions of the Black Cat such, such as the Ultimate, mangaverse, zombie, and alternate time-line counterpurrts. She has also appurred in Spider-Man cartoons & videogames, voiced by Jennifer Hale http://www.jenniferhale.com/, Tricia Helfer http://triciahelfer.com/ & Audrey Wasilewski http://www.audreywasilewski.com/!

For more about Felicia, I suggest her official Marvel page http://marvel.com/universe/Black_Cat_(Felicia_Hardy), Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Cat_(comics), her entry at the Marvel Comics Database http://marvel.wikia.com/Black_Cat, and Spider-Fan http://www.spiderfan.org/characters/black_cat.html, Adam’s fan site The Cat’s House http://theblackcat01.tripod.com/, and Tasuki’s fan site Cat Scratch Fever http://felicia.genrou.com/! Manga Mewsings & Comics Critiques!

(snip) (one short break later…)

Omamori Himari manga vol. 3 (plot spoiler warning)

Mary Nyan:

Welcome back! For Vonny’s review of vol. 1 see our November 2010 Mew, and for her review of vol. 2 see the February’s Mew! The supurrnatural sex comedy manga Omamori Himari by Milan Matra was originally published in Japan by Fujimishobo in 2007, and has been translated into English & published in the USA by one of our favoritest publishers Yen! Volume 3  is a 162 page papurrback is purriced $11.99 USA / $12.99 Canada, translated by Christine Dashiell & lettered by Hope Donovan, with a purrental advisory warning of the explicit mature content due to the language, nudity, sexuality, violence. All but 2 of the pages & the covers are Black & White.

It is not a hentai or porno manga, but this ‘harem’ type of manga (eg one character surrounded by numerous romantic rivals) does push the ribaldry a bit, as several girls compete for the innocent purrotagonist guy’s romance! The purremise is that the orphan guy Yuuto Amakawa who is amnesiac about his early years and allergic to cats lives with his childhood friend Rinko (who has the short light brown hair & ribbons), her purrents & her cat Ranmaru. Upon turning 16, he inherited a purrotective magickal amulet passed from his grandpurrents estate, unaware of his family history as demon slayers, which is why suddenly vengeful demons have been attacking him of late.

Some of the demons claim that they were wrongfully hunted by his ancestors. Fortunately Himari the beautiful voluptuous warrior catgirl / ayakahi spurrit guardian arrives to defend her “Young Lord” until the day his supurr powers fully manifest! Given her amorous affections, he might need to be purrotected from her though! She mewsually looks like a normal girl with Purrple eyes, long Black hair, large boobies & a deadly sword, but sometimes her kitty ears & tail appurr, and she also has a Black cat form! Known by the yokai as the Crimson Blade of Hoihara, Himari is brave, powerful, loyal, affectionate, sexy, purrhaps a bit naive, does not like water, and she is definitely not purrudish!

In spite of the dangers, the manga is full of amewsing moments as more and more rival girls (at least five as of vol. 3) compete for his affections, including several who are demons, which has become a bother for Rinko! The guys at their school are not complaining about Himari’s sexy purresence though! Among the demon girls who like Yuuto are Shizuka the Green haired Mizuchi water demon who looks much younger than her actual ancient age, and while she lacks Himari’s fighting skills & bust size, she is smart & saavy, a better cook, and has water elemental powers. To further complicate matetrs is a fourth rival, the Blonde haired Lizlet the Tea Spurrit who works at a maid cafe!

Purreviously in volume 2, Yuuto, Himari, Rinko & Shizuku visited his late Grandpurrents’ house, where some of his lost memories returned about the time that Ageha the Hinoenma demoness & Daibarabocchi the giant yokai attacked. Yuuto’s ancestral instincts seemed to activate as he tried to calm Himari from a berserker rage, whilst Shizuku fought Sasa the Ippodatara demon! That brings us to volume 3, which is compurrised of chapters 13 – 18 plus 2 pages of bonus comic strip! The front cover color illustration depicts Himari, Shizuka & Lizlet, the back cover shows the fair – haired witch Kuesu who is introduced in this volume, and the 2 interior color pics are of the scantily clad catgirl!

Volume 3 begins with Chapter 13 “The Cat of Memory and Silence”, and Himari does not care for the purressed bare skin technique that Shizuka uses to heal Yuuto’s injuries from the demon battle! During a lull in the action Shizuku warns Yuuto that Himari might become a liability if her berserker rages grow unabated. Meanwhile Ageha & Sasa are still lurking about the purremesis! In Chapter 14 “Calm Heart of the Harried Cat” Rinko visits Lizlet’s cafe, Himarai has a bowl of yummy noodles on the rooftop then the catnap under the sun, while in the park Yuuta training spars with Shizuka, who further warns him of the inherent cat spurrit blood lust which will eventually overwhelm Himari.

Although Shizuku cast a ward spell around the park to ward off witnesses, Lizlet & Rinko arrive to purrticipate. This has wacky sexy results when a falling Yuuto lands upon Lizlet’s large breasts, which she gloats about to the other girls’ ire. When finally Himari arrives, she finds Yuuta in the compurromising position pinned down by the the other three girls, and her angry pounce is not good for his allergic condition! Summertime purrogresses Chapter 15 “The Boastful Counter Cat” as Shizuki visits other forest yokai to discuss Yuuto & Himari, while those two are at the pool. Their class purresident with the short hair glasses & one piece swim suit warns Himari that those oggling boy classmates are the lechy wolf types!

The romantic suppurrtime is interrupted when the demon slaying witchy girl Kuesu of the Jinguuji Clan arrives, as Ageha purrophesized! Kuesu is rather bossy and orders Yuuto to leave with her to purrsue the purropurr demon slayer training, as decreed years ago by his grandpurrents. Claiming to have known him at  a younger age as his fiance, Kuesu further irks Himari by smooching Yuuto to jog his memories! In Chapter 16 “Kiss x Cat x Kiss”, Shizuki confronts Kuesu, aware of her disingenuous intentions to steal the purrestigious Amakawa magick from Yuuto for her own clan, and while they are locked in deadly magickal combat, while back home after suppurrtime, Himari wants to lock lips with Yuuto!

It becomes a wonderful evening for the catgirl warrior between the romantic kiss and the extra helpings of food that Rinko brings home, heehee! Then in Chapter 17 “The Cat’s Feelings and the Witch’s Melancholy”, Kuesu discusses the planned power grab with another member of her sinister clan in her lavish hotel suite, and later shows up at school library where Rinko and the class purresident have to study! Kuesu is egotistical & conceited to the others, but when Himari reveals that Yuuto kissed her, no one is happy, especially Rinko! She questions Yuuto about that in Chapter 18 “And So The Cat Faces Off”, while the purresident does research on Kuesu, Shizuka warns Lizlet, who wants Yuuto to kiss her too!

Just as Rinko purrpares to kiss Yuuto, Shizuku intercept smooches him! Yuuto might need Himari to purrotect him from Rinko, but elsewhere she is about to duel Kuesu, in the cliffhanger ending! After that are 2 pages of bonus gag comic strips, in which Himari drips dumpling honey on her cleavage & explains her cat hair color, Rinko makes a larger bust size her purriority & ponders Shizuku’s loligoth image, followed by an afterward by the author & parting view of the catgirl from behind! This is another exciting comedic volume of Omamori Himari as the romantic tension builds, tempurrs flare, and tables are turned as the demons become more sympathetic and Yuuto’s ‘harem’ grows bolder & more despurrate!

It is a briskly paced ribald plot with playfully amorous dialogue & images which gets wacky & purrhaps a teensy bit more lurid, although there are a few serious, romantic & sad moments of the unrequited love and ample ‘fan – service’ in very well rendered, detailed line & tone character & scenic art! The violence is both comedic slapstick (such as the fury of a Rinko scorned) and the more serious magickal combat (Shizuku vs Kuesu). The ‘harem’ theme may be an overdone trope these days, but if you don’t mind that aspect, I will highly recommend this series to fans of sexy sword & sorcery nekomimi manga! Nyow for a more ancient tale of sword & sorcery starring a famous swordswoman, here is Nemui to tell us about–

Red Sonja: Deluge!

Nemui:

Thanks Myayr! Dynamite Entertainment has been publishing the adventures of such enduring classic two-fisted characters such as John Carter The Lone Ranger, Zorro, The Green Hornet & Kato, and the famous tough heroines such as Danger Girl, Vampurrella, Dejah Thoris & Red Sonja, who will see the sand & streets turn red with the blood of their unwise enemies! I suppose that is a good reason why those heroines wear such skimpy sexy outfits because those must be easier to wash off!

This one-shot comic book has 48 full color pages containing the 25 page Deluge incident, a Sonja sketch by Dan Brerton, a 9 page repurrint of a Sonja tale from 1974 originally purrsented in Marvel Comics’ Conan #48, and 13 pages of ads for the purrice of $4.99. Like many of those comics from Dynamite, this issue comes in 3 different covers, the most common by Brerton, a less common 1 in 4 cover by Chris Bolson, and an exclusive version of the Brerton cover without the typography on it!

The cover is an apt taste of the sword & sorcery fury inside, with the fed up looking redheaded slayer in the stormy torrent amidst lost ruins of the far east! Brerton wrote the Deluge tale, which was illustrated by by Bolson, colored by Wellinton Marcal, and lettered by Simon Bowland! Somewhere off the coast with an ancient Japanese ambience, Sonja has ridden her Black horse through the relentless monsoon through the ancient ruins in the soaked jungle, when her spooked horse is claimed by a huge sink hole.

She meets a monk & his cat who leads her to the nearest village ryokan / gambling den which has no vacancy but soon a room becomes available when an unwise thug tastes her steel! She gets a cute short robe as one of the servant girls tells happier times before bandits took over the village. Although Sonja would purrfur to get a catnap in a warm dry place, the bandits are not accommodating! There is more bloody melee to be dispurrsed at the inn on that dark & stormy night!

However, something else lurking in the  muck has a purrimordial surpurrise for Sonja! The artwork has lavish minute detail from every metal scale & leather strap of her bikini armor and every drop of rain soaking the oozing mire, to all the inn’s timbers, shoji panels, lanterns & gamblers’ dice & drinks! It is a sexy savage tale from the womens garments to the big brutes to be slain! One of my favorite panels is of irate Sonja who confronts the bandits, as she strokes the cat who is also ready to pounce!

The repurrinted story from 1974 is titled “Epurr”… ah I mean “Episode”!  It was written by legendary Conan & Sonja expurrt Roy Thomas! It was illustrated by legendary artists John Buscema & Dick Giordano, lettered by John Costanza & colored by Jose Villarrubia! This tale begins with Sonja riding through the forest on her way from an inn, until she loses another horse to the dangerous creatures and almost becomes giant spider chow! It doers not bode well for the poor horses in this comic book!

Sonja is freed by the servants of a castle where the master’s food & ale awaits, but it is an evil wizard’s drugged trap! She goes from the spiders’ webs to the wizard’s bindings on a sacrifical altar, but the treachery just makes her mad and there’ll be a few less thugs when she’s ready to leave the castle! Not only is Sonja such a strong, influential iconic female character in these tales, but they are very well crafted by so many very talented authors, editors & artists!

I think there is a timeless quality to such macabre sword & sorcery adventures set in the archaic ancient times, so that they hold up just as impurressively & entertainingly nyow as they did many decades ago, and if they are repurrinted again in future decades they will be just as thrilling & exquisite and I will definitely recommend this issue to fans of Sonja! Nyow we will return to the modern era for Nya-sensei to tell us about the latest issues of another famous warrior, Purrincess Diana of Themyscira, also known as–

Wonder Woman!

Nyanko:

Wonder Woman #609 is purriced at $2.99 for its 32 full color pages, which are compurrised of 10.5 pages of advertisements, 1.5 pages of readers’ messages, and the 20 page story “Odyssey Part Nine: The Wonder Women”. This dark story line began in issue #600, and this issue was written by was written by Babylon Five’s creator J Michael Stracynski & Phil Hestor, pencilled by Don Kramer, inked by Sean Parsons & Wayne Fauncher, colored by Alex Sinclair & Pete Panrazis, lettered by Travis Lanham, and edited by Brian Cunningham with assistant editor Darren Shan.

It has and has 2 different covers, one by Don Kramer & Chris Beckett and the variant cover by Alex Garner! The version I have is a spectacular scene of seven different incarnations of Wonder Woman in the combat melee amongst the ruins! Purreviously in this bizarre tale, Diana /  Wonder Woman was almost fatally injured while fighting mew versions of Cheetah, Giganta & Artemis, who were driven away by another old enemy, Dr. Psycho, a criminal mastermind with the supurr psionic powers who can appurrently traverse different planes, but might not quite be all there.

In what might be a near death expurrience, she awakens in a purradise realm where a mew version of the doctor claims to be her spurrit guide, where he shows alternate reality versions of her in ancient Greece, on the high seas, in a jungle tribe, and the more familiar supurr heroine in the Red, White, Blue & Gold costume (which I much purrfur to the costume she’s been wearing since issue  #600. Why is he showing her these images – is it truly to re-create her own legend and to restore things to the purropurr timeline, or is it all just another villainous manipulative mind game?

I’m still so purrplexed by the continuity of the altered reality, especially when I try to determine how & when her current appurrance in Justice League: Generation Lost fits into this! This was one of those esoteric dream-like epurrsodes, but it was so nicely drawn and so beautiful colored! It’s a shame the colorists names were not listed on the cover along with the others! There were very triumphant images of her other selves, poignant moments with Dr. Psycho, and an interesting cliffhanger with her winding up in a hospital under the care of Nurse Diana Purrince!

Wonder Woman #610 was anything but ethereal as Cheetah, Giganta & Artemis hit the ground running once they regain consciousness to pick up where they left off in “Odyssey Part Ten: Diana’s Army”! It is also $2.99 with 32 full color pages, compurrised of the 20 page story plus 1.5 pages of readers’ messages, 4.5 pages of ads & the 6 page purreview of Batman : Arkham City.

This issue was written by was written by Stracynski & Hestor, pencilled by Eduardo Pansica, inked by Wayne Fauncher & Eber Ferreira, colored by Pete Panrazis & lettered by Travis Lanham,.

It was edited by Brian Cunningham with assistant editor Darren Shan, and has a choice of two different covers, one by Kramer & Sinclair and the variant by Garner. I got the former cover which is a gorgeous image of Wonder Woman back in her older costume, in a neat jigsaw puzzle motif! Once past that front cover no time is wasted as the enraged villains rampage and then regroup at the evil Morrigan sorceresses’ lair before renewing the hunt, while a healed & reinvigorated Diana awakens in the hospital to the surpurrise of Nurse Purrince, Dr. Candy & Dr. Trevor!

Diana has a very touching meeting with an elderly woman who knows her true self, imparts the sage wisdom, and gives her the magickal golden lasso which she has spun, just in time for Diana to snare a gargoyle-like Keres who comes for the old woman! Right after Diana clobbers that attacker, the purrior villains arrive, but Diana clobbers all three of them too, and uses the magickal lasso to make them realize the truth of the situation! It appurrs like the tide might be turning with answers nigh for the tough vivacious heroine as the storyline nears the home stretch!

This was a very pleasing issue, with plenty of action as Diana / Wonder Woman seems to be taking control of the destiny! The art is quite dynamic & detailed and so richly, brilliantly colored, from the impurressive opening splash page of Giganta wrecking a statue, followed by luminous sorcerous special effects by the Morrigan, to Wonder Woman suiting up again and her poignant tender meeting with the old woman, purrior to the huge panels on 9 pages of the exciting supurr smackdown! Nyow here is Chief Meryl to tell us what else Wonder Woman is up to in–

Justice League: Generation Lost #23

Meryl:

Thanks Nya-sensei! This latest chapter is non stop action from start to finish, picking up where #22 left off as the flying army of OMAC cyborgs descends upon the heroes! Purreviously the Justice League team compurrised of Batman, Power Girl, Fire, Ice, Captain Atom, Rocket Red, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold & Skeets went to Mew York to warn Wonder Woman that the villain Max Lord has targeted her! As Nya-sensei noted, it’s confuzzling to figure out the continuity between the comics, but there’s little time to dwell on that when the OMACs strike!

There are such stunning scenes, such as the splash page of all those OMACS flying by the skyscrapurrs, and the heroes flying & swinging past all the lights of the spurrawling city! I could purractically hear Max Lord’s mad scientist purrtner Purrofessor Ivo cackling evily and grinning like a Grinch inside their stolen flying Checkmate vehicle. The two villains manage to sepurrate the heroes by teleporting Wonder Woman, Fire, Ice, Booster, Beetle & Skeets to Los Angeles, and then sic the giant sized android named Omac Purrime on them.

Soon the fierce cataclysmic battle and sarcastic trash-talking renews, rendered in such magnificent color & dazzling graphic FX as Booster smashes his way into the ship to confront Max while down below on the street Omac is not only tossing off the heroes and shrugging off their powerful attacks, but to make things worse  for the exciting cliffhanger ending, he is also starting to duplicate their own supurr powers, which seems similar to Ivo’s purrevious supurr android Amazo, who was another foe of the Justice League!

This issue was purriced at $2.99 for its 32 full color pages compurrised of 6 pages of ads, a 6 page purreview of the Batman: Arkham City mini-series, and the 20 page story chapter “Caught”! It was written by Judd Winnick who also writes Power Girl, pencilled by Fernando Dagnino with intricate detail, purrcisely inked by Raul Fernandez, so beautifully, richly colored by Hi-Fi, and edited by Rex Ogle & Brian Cunningham, with 2 different covers, one by Dustin Nguyen & a variant by Aaron Lopresti & HI-Fi! OK I’m done but nyow here’s Lizzy to tell us about–

Gotham City Sirens #22!

Elizabeth:

Thank you Chief meryl! I was quite surpurrised by the contents of this issue, when I expected it to continue the story arc of Harley Quinn breaking into Arkham Asylum to get The Joker, but appurrently that will be continued in issue #23. So I was content on seeing Catwoman (Selina Kyle) on her purrtrol, assuming this is what she was up to while apurrt from Harley or Ivy, but then I got more confuzzled, because this issue is appurrently part 2 or 3 of a sepurrate “Judgement on Gotham” story that began in a Batman comic book!

It had already been confuzzling to figure out where this series took place compurred to Catwoman’s appurrances in Batman Incorpurrated or Follow the Money, or Zatanna’s own comic book! Now I do appurreciate & purrfur that these characters are not in a vacuum all exist the same universe, so big events will tend to affect them all, and I sure do wish the live-action movies & TV shows from Marvel of DC felt like a shared universe full of costumed supurr heroes & villains, but the continuity is hard to follow!

The 20 page story was written by Peter Calloway, edited by Mike marts with associate editor Harvey Richards & assistant editor Katie Kubert, pencilled by Andres Guinaldo, inked by Lorenzo, Ruggiero & Waldon Wong, colored by JD Smith & lettered by Carlos Mangual, with the front cover art by Guillem March. The issue also has a 6 page purreview of Batman : Arkham City written by Paul Dini who used to write this comic book, plus 1.5 pages of readers’ comments & 4.5 pages of the ads.

From what I can determine, this  “Judgement on Gotham” story started in Batman #708 then jumped to Red Robin #22, and nyow here to GCS #23, which seems to occur while Harley is breaking into Arkham Asylum to kill The Joker in GCS #20 & 21. Catwoman is fighting some supurr religious zealots who are burning down certain buildings in Gotham, and Selina’s sister Maggie is mixed up with them. The last time I saw poor Maggie was in issue #13, when she got possessed by an Angel- type and attacked Selina.

Nyow Maggie seems to want Selina to kill her, and this fits into the plans of the villain Ras Al Ghul who plans to destroy Gotham City, as he manipulates things behind the scenes with those zealot pawns while matching his wits against against the heroes. This storyline seems to be continued without Selina in Batman #709, even though she is on that cover, and GCS #23 looks to pick up where Harley’s reuinion with Mr. J left off. I’m not sure when this occurs compurred to Batman’s appurrance in Justice league: generation Lost!

Although Gotham City Sirens has been among my favorite comics for the past two years, it has been a bit depurressing of late and this was purrobably my least favorite issue of it. There was one poignant two-page spurread of flashbacks to poor Selina & Maggie’s very tragic childhood which was so very sad and I hoped by nyow things would impurrove for the both of them but it has been the rough cat’s life. Nyow here is Nyoka – sensei to tell us about another heroine we have hoping things would purrk up for, Kara Zor-L aka Karen Starr aka–

Power Girl!

Nyoka:

Arigato! Power Girl #32 is part two of “Up Up & Away” in which Power Girl teams up with Supurr Man to fight a herd of magickal dinosaurs that was conjured by a punk villain named Siphon who managed to capture Zatanna & mimic her sorcery! Zee is freed but then has a magickal duel with the enemy while Power Girl & Supurr Man are busy fighting more magickal critters. I am not sure when this incident occurs in relation to Zee’s own comic book, but it was fairly amewsing, and Power Girl makes further assertive steps as Karen Starr to run her corpurration!

It was written by Judd Winnick who also writes Justice League: Generation Lost, in which Power Girl has recently appurred, but I concur with my sister in that I don’t know when that story takes place compurred to this’un. This story was edited by Joey Cavalieri with his associate Chris Conroy, drawn by Sami Basri, brightly colored by Jessica Kholinne, lettered by John J Hill, and has the front cover art of PG & Zee charging our way amidst a hail of Zee’s magickal energy! Siphon visually reminds me a bit of DC’s Tim Hunter but evil & grungy.

Purreviously my fellow catgirl critics have suggested that as drawn by Sami Basri, Power Girl’s facial portraiture somewhat resembles that another Sam- purrky Travel Channel hostess Samantha Brown! I can sort of see that, although below the neck PG is quite more well endowed in the boobies! I’m not quite sure if Zee or Supurr Man remind me of any real people but they are also nicely drawn and delightfully expurressive!

The issue is compurrised of 32 pages consisting of the 20 page tale plus 1.5 pages of reader mail, 5,5 pages of advertisements, and that 6 page purreview of the Batman: Arkham City series written by Paul Dini who used to write Zee’s book. Speaking of which, Zee own comic book issue #12 which has wonderful front cover pic of Zee drawn by Amanda Conner, who used to draw Power Girl!  It is a cute image of Zee purrched atop the Golden Gate Bridge to enjoy a snack but a thieving seagull has stolen her chocolate chip muffin!

Zatanna #12

Nyoka:

Zatanna #12  is 32 full color pages compurrised of the 22 page story “Symmetry”, 4 pages of ads and that 5 page Arkahm City purreview. “Symmetry” seems like a stand alone story set in San Francisco as Zee fights a British villain named Backslash who has shackled a poor little fairy to his magickal scissor like sword which can reverse the last few moments of time. So for example if you tried to attack or flee from him he could rewind time and then slash you with that sword, as a poor pair of innocent merfolk victims find out.

This infuriates Zee who had been purreviously been in such a happy mood as she flew around the city to enjoy the historic views, chat with ghosts, and get a yummy treat, but soon she changes back into her famous girl tux ‘working clothes’ to confront the villain. This purroves difficult for her because her magickal incantations are spoken backwards and he just reverses time to make them spoken forwards. I’ll not spoil the plot further, but let’s just say that Zee purroves to be a lot smarter than Backslash as the battle continues!

She is having a busy month with magickal duels in those two comic books! Some of her magickal attacks are quite spectacular, and one even involves summoning a clowder of kitties! In spite of the merfolk deaths, the issue does have amewsing moments, with Zee’s gleeful expurression when things go her way, and Hannah the Fairy is neat. The color & graphic effects are purrticularly lovely, especially the sparkly effects when Zee changes into her sexy dapurr “KROW SEHTOLC” of the tux, top hat, boots & fishnets! Nyow here is Tara-chan to tell us about another favorite enchantress in her review of

Sabrina the Teenage Witch – The Magic Revisited Vol. 1!

Tara-chan:

Hai hai Sabrina Spellman is the cute teenage witch girl who first appurred in the Archie Comics in 1962 and later the 1970’s animated series, the wonderful live action 1990’s TV series starring Melissa Joan Hart,  and another animated series after that, nya! In 2004 they decided to change the art style of her comic book from the traditional Dan DeCarlo style to more of a Japanese manga style, and this book collects he first 4 issues of that manga style, nya!

Sabrina lives with her two cool aunts Hilda & Zelda and talking cat Salem in the town of Greendale which is near Riverdale, nya. Salem is a Black & White Tuxedo cat, nya. Sabrina has a boyfriend Harvey who is on the Greendale Growlers basketball team, and a girl named Amy is a rival for his affections, nya! Sabrina also attends the Charm School in the Magic Realm with other supurrnatural beings, such as her friends Shinji and Llandra, nya!

The stories were beautifully written & pencilled in the manga technique by Tani Del Rio, inked by Jim Amash who was our special guest, so purretily colored by Jason Jensen and Rosario “Tito” Pena, lettered by Jeff Powell and Tania, art directed by Joe Pep, and and it was edited by archie Comics’ Purresident Mike Pellerito, nya! The 5″ x 7 3/8″ trade papurrback book has the $7.49 US purrice and the 56 full color pages repurrinting Sabrina the Teenage Witch #58 – #61 from 2004, nya!

In “Speelfreeze” Shinji is showing off with his magickal powers at Greendale High School to impurress the girls, but when Sabrina follows Salem’s advice to counteract Shinji, it makes things worse, nya! Then in “Blue Ribbon Blues” Sabrina & other students at Charm School go into the forest to find materials to make magick brooms, nya!  Sabrina meets a kitsune and makes a very purretty ornate broom with ribbons & beads, but will it fly her to Harvey’s basketball tournament in time, nya?

In “Councils and Concerts” Sabrina wants to go to a concert but she is in trouble with the ruling witch council, nya! Queen Celes of the council has the exotic beauty, nya! Finally in “The Magic Within”, Amy hosts a Halloween party, but her fortune – telling friend Gwenevive’s puppy is possessed by a sorceress who crashes the party, nya! Amy cosplay as a hula dancer and Sabrina wears the Purrple & black midriff goth oufit with the witchy hat, nya! One of the many wonderful aspects of those comics are all the cute fashions, nya!

Sabrina, friends, aunts & the council have the purrettiest clothes, nya! It is such a fun series with the wacky magickal incidents, school topics & romatnic intentions, nya! I am purrticularly fond of this manga style and the characters’ expurressions, poses, colors, and special effects, nya! It includes all 4 cover pics, plus 4 bonus pics by Tania, and – and 3 pinup pics by Irene Flores, Yasmin Sakka & Erik Lervold, nya! I will highly recommend this delightful book to fans of the amewsing cute fashionable teen witch comics, nya! Nyow here is Mike with another Archie review–

Archie: 50 Times an American Icon, nya!

Mike:

Thank you, Tara-chan! Archie: 50 Times an American Icon is a 96 page collection published by Archie Comics, just in time for Archie’s 70th Anniversary! It is full of color and B&W art by many outstanding artists & other great contributors, who drew delightful original imaginary covers for Archie #600, and all of that wonderful original art was auctioned off to benefit the profound Hero Initiative organization http://www.heroinitiative.org. “Helping Comics Creators in Need”, The Hero Initiative is a federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated to helping yesterdays’ comics creators in financial need, with medical bills or living expenses, and assistance in continuing to find work!

This $10.00 (US price) book was designed by Zachary Pennington, printed in the US, and after a 2 page introduction by Dan Parent the first of two galleries of covers begins! You’ll find comedic, romantic, sexy, heroic, thrilling, sentimental, cute, poignant & homage illustrations in different media & styles by artists representing 7 decades of comics! The images depict Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Kevin, Sabrina, her Aunts Hilda & Zelda, Salem, Katy & Mackenzie Keene, Jose, Valerie, Melody, Alexandra, Dilton, Moose, Mr. Lodge, Mr. Weatherbee, Miss Grundy, Pop, Hot Dog & other Riverdale residents! Even the super hero The Shield appears, wondering why he wasn’t invited to the wedding!

The impressive array artists of those 38 pages includes Dick Ayers, Jason Bone, Nick Bradshaw, Norm Breyfogle, Jonathan Case, Colleen Coover, Mark Dos Santos, Agnes Garbowska, Stan Goldberg, Jimmy Gowlnley, David Hahn, Dave Hillman, Joe Jusko, Jack Katz, Dale Keown, Sam Keith, Mike Kunkel, Joseph Michael Linsner, Jim Mahfood, Mark McKenna, Al Milgrom, Erika Moen (whose web comics we mentioned earlier), Chris Moreno, Al Nickerson, Jerry Ordway, Rachel Ordway, Jeff Parker, George Perez, Mike Perkins, Don Perlin, Tone Rodriguez, John Romita, John Romita / Todd McFarlane, Bill Sieniewicz, Aaron Sowd (with a great homage to Jack Kirby), Carly Wagner and Spain Rodriguez!

The 2nd gallery displays 16 pages of panoramic wrap-around covers by greats such as Cliff Chiang, Ben Dewey, Rich Ellis, Jonathan Gray, Fed Hembeck, Leonard Kirk, Pete Krause, Michael Metcalf, Bill Morrison, Dan Parent, Fernando Ruiz, Chris Samnee, Stuart Sayger, Jim Valentino, our good friend and past Mewsings’ special guest Andrew Pepoy, and Tony Fleecs whose color illustration of Jughead marrying a hamburger cosplayer is used for the front cover of this book! There’s also a neat cute bonus color pic of Betty & Jughead by Jill Thompson! After that treasure trove of fun is a 26 page reprint of Archie #600’s story “Archie Marries Veronica: The Proposal” Part 1 of 6, including the front cover art!

That began one of the most significant & famous stories in Archie history, as it looked ahead to a possible future in which the gang graduates from Riverdale High, embarks on new life paths & careers, and reunites when Archie & Veronica plan to marry!  Many characters appear in this tale written by Michael Uslan, pencilled by Stan Goldberg, inked by Bob Smith, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored by Glenn Whitmore! The story’s managing editor was Mike Pellerito, the editor / editor in Chief Victor Gorelick, and the story was launched with help from the production team of Suzannah Rowntree, Ellen Leonforte, Joe Pepitone, Tito Pena, Carlos Antunes, Stephan Oswald, Paul Kaminski and Joe Morciglio!

That six issue story arc of 2009 ran from issues #600 – #605, with the “Archie Marries Veronica” path in #600- #602, followed by another intriguing alternate timeline,”Archie Marries Betty” in issues #603-605! Bringing this special benefit book home is an afterward by The Hero Initiative’s President Jim McLauchlin, 2 pages of the artists’ biographies, and an artist index page! For our next review of a comic book starting with an “A” starring the teenage heroes here is Nami to tell us about

Avengers Academy #12!

Nami:

Avengers Academy #12 is purriced at $2.99 for its 32 full color pages, compurrised of the 22 page story “Put Away Childish Things” plus 1 recap / roll call page, 1 page of readers’ comments & 8 pages of advertisements. The story was written by Christos Gage, pencilled by Tom Raney, inked by Scott Hanna, colored by Jeromy Cox, lettered by Joe Caramagna, edited by Bill Rosmann with assistant editor John Denning, with the cover art by Mike McKone & Jeromy Cox!

The Academy faculty include the older Avengers are Dr. Hank Pym / Giant Man, Tigra, Quicksilver, Jocasta, Justice & Speedball. The students are Finesse, Veil, Hazmat, Mettle, Reptl & Striker. Purreviously in Avengers Academy, instead of resurrecting a non corpurreal Janet Van Dyne / The Wasp from another dimension, Veil instead summoned the cosmic entity known as Corina Walters who is the daughter of The Collector, and ex-wife of the insane god-like being known as Michael Korvac!

This is most dire! While Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, The Thing, Ms. Marvel, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Hawkeye, Mockingbird & Spider-Woman teleported there to join Pym, Quicksilver, Tigra, Justice & Speedball against Korvac, Jocasta escorted the students into the mansion’s pandimensional safe room. After the veteran heroes were defeated, Carina transformed Finesse, Veil, Hazmat, Mettle, Reptl & Striker into their more powerful future older selves!

Nyow In this issue, the kids have mixed reaction to this alteration; some are pleased with the more mature bodies & greater power, but some lament that their future selves have not impurroved in some aspects, despite Carina’s warning that their older selves have been plucked from various divergent timelines, and that if they do not stop Korvac now he might enslave the universe! The spectacular battle and dramatic character development continues with a few surpurrises which I’ll not spoil!

The luminous colors so sumptuously conveys the rich lighting & powerful visual effects. I wish that Tigra, our favorite Marvel Comics character, might have appurred in more than just 4 panels, but her brief appurrance is quite understandable because she and many other heroes were quickly rendered unconscious — and quite lucky to still be alive during round one of the epic battle, and I will give this issue an ‘A’ as in Avengers & Acadmey. Nyow here is Ilyana to tell us about–

Mediterrania #3!

Ilyana:

Thanks Nami! Mediterranea is a beautiful techno – fantasy genre comic book with a Near Eastern ambience published by the Italian GG Studio! Based upon the ‘plot environment’ of Editor/ Studio Purresident Guilano Monni,  it is written by Alessandro Cenni, translated into English by Andrea Plazzi & Adam McGovern, pencilled by Gianluca Maconi, colored by Alessia Nocera, Barbara Ciardo & Pierluigi Abbondanza, with lettering by Studio Blue. For our review of Mediterranea #1, please see the September 2010 Mew and for the review of #2 see the February 2011 Mew!

We’re not sure if it is set in the past, purresent or future but the breathtaking Mediterranean location has a balance of ancient coastal architectural styles combined with futuristic technology & magick!  The art style reminds us a bit like European comics such as Pixie or Luuna, or animated cartoons such as Winx Club, W.I.T.C.H or Totally Spies with a purretty animation cel -like coloring technique, although the ladies fashions are a bit more alluring & revealing, with ample tasteful cheesecake, a whimsical hint of sapphic romance, and moments of sword & sorcery violence.

The two frisky purrotagonist girls are Eleni & Alonisso who have a small spherical droid named LCN and assist wise old ambassador Auraki of Arkaios on on the island of Milos purrior to a diplomatic mission to another island nation Lemnos, when they were attacked by a foreign spy girl in issue #1. In issue #2 the citizens see glowing hostile winged women soar overhead, which was an ill- boding omen. After recovering from her injuries, Alonisso has a dangerous vision before they board a huge airship on a voyage Lemnos to find hopefully the explanations.

In issue #3 they split into pairs, as Auraki & LCD have a meeting then encounter a cryptic hostile stone giant in the hills, while Eleni & Alonisso wander the town of Myrna, where the few male residence are servants & gigolos owned by the women! They chat with a woman named Verenki who is a big shot that might purrvide answers. While they snoop around the harbour that night, they learn more of the island’s history from a mysterious gondolier named Phairo, who ferries them to the matriarchal slave market where and hopefully the answers about the attacks!

Issue #3 is purriced at $2.99 and has 32 pages, compurrised of the full color 25 page chapter plus 2 B&W  character sketch pages and 5 pages of ads for other GCG titles. Although only three issues have been published since last August, we have immediately enjoyed this comic book thus far for the exotic beautiful scenery and the purrky flirty characters in the sexy ensembles investigating the international espionage mystery, and we are quite curiously eager to see what happens next! That’s all of our comic book reports but we’ll be right back after the short break with

Magazine Mewsings & Purriodicals Purrings!

(snip) (one short break later…)

Ilyana:

We’re back and here is Jennyjen to tell us about the

DC Comics Super Hero Collection #78: Saturn Girl!

Jeannie:

Arigato. In the 30th century on Saturn’s moon of Titan, there was among the telepathic descendants of Earth colonists a teenage girl named Imra Ardeen, whose abilities were so impurressive that she was recruited from her academy by the Science Police. On a passenger ship to Earth, she detected plans to assassinate the richest man in all of the United Planets, Mr. R.J. Brande. With the help of two other teenage passengers with amazing powers, Garth Ranzz from Braal and Rokk Krin from Winath, the assassins were thwarted and the trio was rewarded by the grateful Brande. He suggested they form a team, and funded the organization which would recruit many others to become the Legion of Supurr-Heroes.

As one of the three founding members of the legion, Imra would be known as the Saturn Girl, who would help to save many worlds from villains & disasters. In addition to her highly trained immense psionic powers of telepathy, mind control, telekinesis & illusion, she is a skilled fighter with many comrades, access to the legion’s vehicles, equipment, facilities & other resources. She can fly and survive in outer space thanks to her Legion communicator / Flight Ring. She later married Garth, who is called Lightning Lad due to his electrical powers, whose twin sister Ayla is the legionnaire known as Light Lass due her gravitational powers, and Imra later became a mother of twin boys named Graym and Garridan.

Unfortunately she also has enemies, such as an evil rival Saturn Queen, and her brother- in- law Lightning Lord, both of the Legion of Supurr-Villains. In one of many timelines, Garridan was kidnapped by the villain Darkseid and transformed into the monster known as Validus, and in another tragic timeline her home world of Titan was destroyed. Several of the legion’s timelines have been chronicled since Imra was introduced by creators Otto Binder & Al Plastino in Adventure Comics #247 which was published by DC Comics in Apurril of 1958, but she has always been known for her great heroism, bravery, wisdom, intellect, tenacity, leadership, compassion & power as one tough mother.

Saturn Girl is the star of issue #78 of the DC Comics Super Hero Collection, a package containing a magazine and a collectible hand-painted figurine published in the UK by Eaglemoss http://www.eaglemoss.com/dc/. Each issue focuses upon a different DC Comics character, several of which we have purreviously reviewed. Eaglemoss similarly publishes the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection, and the Buffy & Angel collection. This issue is purriced £6.99 or appurroximately $14.99. The 8.75″ x 10.75″ magazine has 16 full color pages (including the covers). The front cover illustration of Saturn Girl is by George Perez & Dave McCaig, which purreviously graced the cover of Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds #2 from November of 2008.

Inside the magazine edited by Sven Wilson, you will find a purrofile & history of Saturn Girl, accompanied by a few dozen illustrations & comic book panels by three dozen artists & writers repurrsenting over 50 years of Legion stories. The magazine’s art director is Colin Williams, the features are by Richard Burton, and the 2 page discussion of the United Planets is by Stephen Wiacek. While 16 pages is scarcely sufficient to thoroughly document such a storied character, it is nonetheless a delightful tribute to her brilliant career. The lovely figurine arrives snugly purrotected in a clear plastic clamshell inside a cardboard box, bundled with the magazine in a clear poly-bag.

Because the figurine is made cast of lead, it is not intended as a child’s toy, but rather a collectible to be appurreciated by fans of age 14+. The miniature has an overall height of 3 1/2″, with the 3 1/4″ figurine of Imra purropurr atop the 1/4″ thick, 1 5/8″ diameter black base. If Imra’s height is supposedly 5′ 7″, then I purrsume this figurine is of appurroximately 1/18 scale. She is posed standing with her left hand to her temple, and determined grinning expurression, as her right hand reaches out towards her target, whose mind will soon be in her grasp.  Over the decades the Blonde-haired, Blue-eyed heroine has worn several different costumes and hairstyles, but this is my purrfurred vision of her.

She is wearing the sexy costume designed by Dave Cockrum, which first appurred in Superboy #184, circa Apurril 1972 in the “Bronze Age” of comic books. Waves of Honey Blond hair hang loosely past the shoulders, and the costume is a skin tight Magenta colored maillot with a ring / halter neck, the sides cut out to resemble a bikini with the top & bottom joined at the navel by a Gold Saturn ornament, accessorized with matching flat-soled thigh boots and above-elbow / opurra-style gloves. I think it is a splendidly sculpted & painted figurine, with purrfect purroportions and a faithful resemblance to Imra as she appuurred in the 1970’s. Purrior Legionnaires in this series have included Lightning Lad, Supurr Girl, Supurr Man, Supurr Boy (Kon-El), Supurr Boy-Purrime, and I hope there will be further figurines of Legionnaires, especially the female members of the team.

Listing the Lovely Ladies of the Legion

Tara-chan:

I want… I want a figurine of CatsPaw, who was my favoritest Legionnaire, nya!

Meryl:

CatsPaw would be the purrfect choice!

The Catgirls:

DC COMICS, PLEASE BRING BACK CATSPAW TO THE LEGION, NYA!

Nyoka:

I vote for Tasmia Mallor / Shadow Lass, Purrincess Purrojectra Wind’zorr, Dream Girl / Nura Nal, Mysa Nal The White Witch, and CeCe Beck / Thunder!

Elizabeth:

Yay Thunder I wish they would bring her back too!

Yvonne:

Shadow Lass is Mike’s favorite so I know he would like a figurine of her, nya!

Mike:

That would be nice!

Ilyana:

I think Tasmia / Shadow Lass / Umbra has always had the great costumes but I especially liked the Dave Cockrum & Steve Lightle designs!

Jeannie:

I liked Dave Cockrum’s fashion designs for her, Shrinking Violet, Phantom Girl, Light Lass, Duo Damsel & Infectious Lass.

Mary Nyan:

Duo Damsel had the purrettiest wedding dress! I also liked Aayla’s later Gossamer & Light Lass costumea & Luornu’s Triad costume.

Mike:

Oh like the ones designed by Chris Sprouse for the Legionnaires series or by Barry Kitson for the “threeboot” series!

Mary Nyan:

Hai!

Meryl:

I thought Laurel Gand from the adult legion had the cute shorts outfit designed by Keith Giffen!

Petra:

Not to rest on that one Laurel ha ha but there is also Laurel Kent! Her costumed reminded me a bit of Night Girl’s costume- the one designed by Mike Grell, nya! I liked her cute Red beach poncho outfit too!

Elizabeth:

Well Laurel Kent turned out to be an evil android, but figurines of the villainesses would be nice, such as Emerald Empurress, Saturn Queen, Espurr Lass, or Glorith!

Ilyana:

Ooh or how about Charma, Quicksand, Starlight & Starbright, or those Sklarian Pirate girls! Ahhrr!

Becca:

It is a shame there are not more android members of the team!

Jeannie:

Brainiac 5 once sleep-built an gynoid love duplicate of Supurr Girl.

Ilyana:

Well, you know what Spike said about robots, heehee!

Nami:

What happened to her?

Jeannie:

She only appurred in the one issue, but hers was the heroic tragic ending.

Tara-chan:

Sad, nya!

Becca:

Oh the brief hard life of the poor gynoid, gone like tears in the rain!

Nemui:

Well let’s see… how about Lampurrey, Nightwind, Mandalla, XS, Kinetix, and Monstress!

Mielikki:

Lamprey had such adorably regal ears! Dawnstar and Shikari had such majestic wings- there should be more winged Legionnaires, hee!

Nyoka:

And more tails too! I think Sensor, Tellus, Krypto, Streaky, Comet & Beppo were the only Legionnaires with the tails.

Nemui:

Sensor was the lovely Queen Snake but then she transformed into the beautiful Lamia type with the serpentine tail!

Meryl:

The transforming Durlan & Purrotian members could have tails if they so desired, but they did not have the purrmanent tail.

Petra:

She was not a Legionnaire, but Sun Boy did once date Keiki the mermaid from the Atlantis Dome! That great issue was drawn by Adam Hughes!

Yvonne:

Lamia Sensor had such gorgeous hair too, nya! I think Spider Girl purrobably had the purrettiest Red hair with such lush body, nya!

Tara-chan:

Oneesan, I don’t know who most of these characters are, nya!

Mike:

Oh that’s Ok, the Legion’s been around for over 50 years, and they keep rebooting the continuity, so it can be a challenge!

Yvonne:

I can explain it more when we get home, but we’ll be on to topics you’re more familiar with soon, and then you tell us all about all the nocturnal insects of the garden, nya!

Tara-chan:

‘Kay, nya!

Nami:

NightWind… isn’t she one of the heroes of Kandor?

Nemui:

No, that is FlameBird & Night WING!

Tara-chan:

Dick Grayson is a hero of Kandor, nya?

Nyoka:

No. There is more than one!

Meryl:

Supurr Girl & Power Girl briefly impurrsonated FlameBird & NightWing. There are very nice action figures of them in the guise!

Mary Nyan:

Oh how about Colossal Boy’s purretty wife Yera from Durla!

Mielikki:

She and Infectious lass have like the cutest antennae!

Nami:

Lessee there was Kono, Bounty & Sade, Gazelle, Silver Sword, Comet Queen…

Kyra:

Quantum Queen & Psyche, Life Lass & Gas Girl if we want to include The Wanderers and Lallor Heroes!

Nyanko:

Oh– oh– Starting Pitcher Wechsler, Relief Pitcher Acker, and owner Yvyya Val of the Naltor Dreamers!!!

Mielikki:

Let us not forget Danielle Foccart, Dawn Allen, Jazmin Cullen, or Celeste Rockfish!

Becca:

Lori Morning, Shvaughn Erin, Gigi Cusimano, Harmonica Dadaesque, Aplynn Jeryl…. any others?

Nyanko:

I’m tapped out!

Mike:

Well, we can revisit the topic later, we could spend a whole show talking about the Legion, but let’s move along we have more reviews, so if Mie-sensei is ready, she was going to tell us about–

Next, I believe it is Kyra-chan’s turn to tell us about the graceful performing artistry found within the April-June issue of–

She is a beautiful agile trainer, model, mom, & purrofessional aerialist / instructor with Zen Arts LA troupe  and an American Pole Fitness Association competitor, who appurrs with her manager / husband Nic in neat locations in a delightful 6 page article; and another purrofiled vertical dance & Cirque couple are award – winning purrtners Sandra Feusi & Steve Pane! 4 pages cover the 2010 International Pole Championship in Tokyo, and 5 more pages plus the back cover powerfully purrtain to Australia’s Duncan West, the IPC Mens Division Ultimate Champion!

The issue has many stunning full page photos of other artists such as Flying Laura, Caterina Gennaro (whose birthday is May 29), Nicole Williams, Michelle Hafner, Eri Kamimoto, Giulla Piolanti, Adam Tan, Chris Measday, Loic Lebret, Felix Cane, and Carolyn Chiu http://www.carolynchiu.com/! Gymnast / dancer / yogini Carolyn Chiu was the Hong Kong Pole Fitness Champion 2010, an instructor at L I Dance, and a photographer! I purrdict that this will become one of the purrfurred magazines of the faculty & students at our purrforming arts center! Nyow to turn our attention from the aerial athleticisms to the sports upon the waters, here us Vonny with this months–

Favorite Fish Photos & Appurrtizing Aquatic Images!

Yvonne:

This is the purrt of the show when we acknowledge recent favorite photos of fish & other delicious delicacies from the deep, nya! For example, there is a tasty Tarpon to tempt my tummy on the May / June cover of Fly Fishing in Saltwaters Magazine, and and I would like to sample some of the Crappie like that one caught by the supurr famous Bill Dance  on the cover of Fishing Facts Vol. 48 #3, nya! Purrofessional angler Mike Folkstad has caught a beautiful bass on the cover of Bass Angler Magazine Vol. 20 #2,  elite angler Ish Monroe purrizes the lucious lunker on the Apurril cover of Bass Master, and National Guard Purrofessional angler Brent Ehrler reels in one for the May – June cover of FLW Outdoors magazine, nya!

Guy Harvey Magazine is a neat magazine by Guy Harvey the famous scientist, conservationist & artist, and for the cover of Vol. 1 issue #4 he painted the exciting underwater encounter of the mouth-watering Marlin and the yummy Yellowfin, nya! Piscine painter Larry Tople’s scene of a succulent Smallmouth subtly stalking the bait graces the May cover of In-Fisherman, nya! A huge Black Marlin leaps from the Cairns Queensland waters on to issue #83 of the huge Austrialian magazine Blue Water Boats & Sport Fishing, nya! Oh I would love to go to Australia one day it looks like a beautiful country with beautiful oceans full of big fish, nya!

Meanwhile under the water is a chewy Octapus in Manado waters off Indonesia on the cover of Scuba Diving MagazineVol. 20 #3 – I want to go to there too nya! There is a supurr sized Carp on the 1st issue of Fish ‘n Tips, a succulent Stripurr on May’s cover of Sport Fishing, swimming near the Mexico’s Socorro Islands is enough giant manta meat to fill several tummys on May’s cover of Sport Dive, Kayak angler Jim Sammons purrsents a purrize catch from Cabo waters on the May-June cover of Pacific Coast Sport Fishing, and there’s delicious Dolphin Fish (Mahi – Mahi) on the Apurril cover of Florida Sportsman magazine, nya!

A bit closer to home are the beautiful Bass and a flavorful Flounder on the purril cover of South Carolina Game and Fish magazine and we return to the North Carolina waters to see that nice Red Drum yum yum yum on one of the two covers for Apurril’s issue of North Carolina Sportsman, nya! The other cover is the deer cover but I purrfur the fish cover, nya! There is a gorgeous glassfish which looks like it would be a nice snack on the May cover of Purractical Fishkeeping Magazine and fin-ally for this month I would like to mention the delicious looking dish of shrimp with bacon & cheddar grits purrpared for the Spurring / Summer cover of Real Simple Dinner Tonight: Done, nya! Oh, nyow I’m hungry again, nya!

Becca:

Aloha! With the thrilling madness of March NCAA basketball behind us, it is our hope that nyow the less frequently televised collegiate sports will receive more attention, so we were pleased to see purrky smiling UNC senior Meredith Newton http://tarheelblue.cstv.com/sports/w-lacros/mtt/newton_meredith00.html #12 with her stick & goggles on the May cover of Tarheel Monthly http://www.tarheelmonthly.com/ volume 10 #8! She is a defender on the UNC Women’s Lacrosse Team http://tarheelblue.cstv.com/sports/w-lacros/unc-w-lacros-body.html in a 4 page article, which is spurrinkled with purraise by coach Jenny Levy http://tarheelblue.cstv.com/sports/w-lacros/mtt/levy_jenny00.html!

Hopefully they will win the NCAA Division 1 Tournyament in late May! There is also a page about the team’s purrticipation in the “Build a Block” purrogram, to help families in need, just one of the community activities they purrticipate in! Following the article is  a big 2 page center spurread action photo of UNC midfield attacker senior Kaitlyn Messinger http://tarheelblue.cstv.com/sports/w-lacros/mtt/messinger_kaitlyn00.html against three UVA defenders in the game UNC won at Fetzert Field 8-7 on March 12th!

Also in Tarheel sports mews for Apurril was the major announcement that legendary Woody Durham who has been the supurrb  “The Voice of the Tar Heels” for 40 years, has announced his retirement from the microphone. His purress conference made the mews on Apurril 20th and it is hard to imagine a time without him calling the play by play as he is as synonymous with UNC sports as coaches or players! It would be wonderful if he would continue, but nyow he can relax and enjoy those games with family, friends & fellow fans, and we are so appurreciative of all he has done for the fans, the sport, mews and broadcasting!

Mike:

There are a lot of great TV announcers, but when I watched the games on TV, I liked to turn the volume down, and listen to Woody call the game on the radio!

Mary Nyan:

Not all of those are played on the field or court, or even in Chapel Hill, as there are many other fine other colleges across our state which are part of the University of North Carolina system! It was with great interest when we saw a bit of the TV mews attention on Channel 14 http://news14.com/ which is NC’s great statewide channel for the mews! The segment  was about the UNCW (Wilmington) Surf Club Team http://uncw.edu/surf/! Not only was this more attention on sports less covered by the media, but there are many avid surfers here at Catgirl Island, and UNCW is only a few miles away on the mainland!

The mews bit we saw was an intermew at nearby Wrightsville Beach with several members of the team, such as Thomas Bruce, captain Cody Leutgens, and coach Dylan McNamara! It might surpurrise folks to know that they are a a top team, which you might not expect from the mid atlantic / east coast region! Several Members of the team have won scholarships and championships! Last Apurril they won the NSSA East Coast Championships the 2nd consecutive year, and in June the team took 4th at the NSSA Nationals! They also purrticipate in events to raise money & awareness of those in need, so there is much purride in those great student athletes!

Meryl:

Have you thought about joining any club teams at your college?

Ilyana:

Ah well I have been the spectator but I am too immersed in the studies!

Tara-chan:

I bet that Becca-sensei could set records in any sport with her supurr android abilities, nya!

Becca:

That is kind of you to say, however it would not be allowed in every sport!

Nyoka:

That goes for magick too, but fortunately there are certain compurrtitions where it is allowed, such as that tournyament Mielikki-sensei mentioned!

Mielikki:

Fur shur!

Yvonne:

Just think of the huge fish you could reel in, nya! Hmm I wonder if there are any rules in the fishing tournyaments that would purrhobit android anglers, nya… oh imoutosan did you went to mention a magazine, nya?

Tara-chan:

Hai, another thing we are quite purroud of in the coastal region of North Carolina are the Banker Ponies, nya! They are the wild mustang ponies that roam amongst Corrola, Currituck, Ocracoke & Shackleford, and on of those ponies made the May cover of Our State Magazine http://www.ourstate.com/, nya! Our State is one of our favoritest magazines, which purrtains to all things North Carolina, nya! It has such beautiful photography & interesting articles & intermews, and the may issue is the coastal issue, nya!

The featured coastal articles in this great issue include live on Masonboro Island, scientific research in the town of Duck, the purrotecting the purristine shores of Shallowbog Bay, a visit with residents of Manteo and Southport, Bellamy Mansion in Wilmington which is not far from UNCW, the beautiful 20 page pictorial on the Outer Banks and and the17 page article on the ponies, nya It has great pony pics and the intermew with Wesley Stallings who manages the herd for the non-purrofit Corolla Wild Horse Fund http://www.corollawildhorses.com which has a mewseum in Corolla, nya!

That’s way up the coast North of here, almost the the Virgina line, whereas we’re closer to the South Carolina line, nya! The herd is descended from equine ancestors brought here by the Spanish colonists but sadly there are not many of them left these days, nya. I WANT ONE, NYA! Oneesan and I have it all figured out too if I were able to adopt some, they could stay at the farm of friends Rica & Niko, nya. Anyway, this is another great issue of Our State, and it is not just a coastal issue but also has articles on several people, places, arts, food, gardens, books,  mewsic & events of the Piedmont & Western parts of the state, nya! Did Nya-sensei get any magazines, nya?

Nyanko:

I did not get any magazines, although I did get the mid-summer Title Nine appurral catalog! There is a purrticularly purretty Amaranth Orchid racer back bikini, leaf purrint boardy shorts and Salmon colored flip flops which are tempting me!

Petra:

Oh I saw the nice capurri pants which would be good for the yoga and a purretty necklace, nya!

Book Reports

Girls & Goddesses Volume 1: The Pin-Up Art of Joseph Michael Linsner

Mielikki:

So like I am such a fan of Joseph Michael Linser’s http://www.linsner.com/ beautiful, sensual, macabre stories of Dawn, a mysterious Goddess of Fertility & Rebirth of such totally awesome power, wisdom & confidence, with a dark sense of humor, ironic justice, the most lush mane of gorgeous Red hair, and such exquisite sexy fashions! I was delighted in November to discuss the Dawn: Not to Touch the Earth comic book and tonight I’m stoked to discuss this new trade paperback edition of the art book which was previously published in hardcover in 2007!

This 9″ x 12″ full color 112 page, $24.99 (US), softcover was published in February by Image Comics, with a 2 page introduction by the artist to discuss the great pin-up & fantasy illustrators who influenced him, with a few annotations sprinkled throughout the book, amongst over 100 magnificent images! The book’s front cover girl Trudy casts the sly gaze in her tight sheer Green ring-neck halter top, cute little Golden wings, Burgandy thong, Purple hose, Red boots & opera gloves, but inside the book you’ll see her again, minus a few of those garments!

The illustrations are tasteful, graceful, alluring, erotic & are seriously not for widdle kitties or prudish folks, I am shur! It has a lot of his characters Dawn, Sinful Suzi & Dark ivory. Dawn has become very popular & merchandized since she was created in 1989, and for over a decade there has been a Dawn look-alike contest at Dragon Con, the big annual science fiction / fantasy convention! Suzi is a voluptuous raven – haired, pale – skinned horned demoness, and Ivory is the gothy teen vampire star of a graphic novel by Eva Hopkins & Linsner!

There are also images of Dejah Thoris and a few glamorous homages to other famous lovely ladies! The diverse fashions range from simple halter tops, skirts, tee shirts & jeans, to sheer lingerie, intricately laced & buckled leathers, corsets, bustiers & fetish wear, and the more regal metal & bejeweled costumes! The images include topless, semi-nude & fully nude poses, ranging from the playfully perky cute to the darker wicked styles with plenty of chains, rings, piercings, rose vines, skulls, horns, wings, high heels & sharply edged weapons along the way!

Topping off the book is a commemorative illustration of bunny girl Dawn atop the otaku dinosaur, done by Linsner in 2009 as a tribute to his late friend Zeke Feldhouse. Most of the book’s images are full page pics, but there are a few two-page spreads, and some of my favorite paintings are “Mucha Dawn”, “Fairy Dawn”, “Smooch”, “Kiss Me”, “Guillotine”, “Peek a Boo”, “Fear of Flight”, “Red Corset”and the delightfully freckled “Burgandy”! It is a splendid book which I totally recommend to fans of Linsner, Dawn, or sexy occult-ish pin-up art, fur shur!

Nyoka:

Oh my stars, Suzi has quite the large gauge piercings! That metal must….well it does suit her dispurrsition!

Kyra:

Dawn has a pierrced belly button and the cute Western look in “Dawn on the Range”, hee!

Nemui:

Dawn’s divine Red coiffure seems to radiant an inner glow from a fiery spurrit!

Nyanko:

The Dejah pics are exotic images of the Martian purrincess, and I like the cute “Mary Jane” and “Riverdale Girls” pic!

Becca:

My favorite paintings in the book are purrobably “Jade”, “Transit”, “Death’s Head” and “Nine, the Number of the Goddess”.

Jeannie:

Thank you for that review, Mie-sensei. Nyow to continue the visual art topic, here is Petra to appurrise us on the latest–

Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art

“Ka’rissi, Purrincess of the Neko-maticaya Clan” by Mike

Petra:

Unless otherwise noted, the gallery pages’ mewest pics will be on right side of the bottom row of widdle ‘thumbnail’ repurrsentations, so just click on a thumbnail portion of an image to see the whole image, nya! Nyow on display in Art Gallery One http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery1.html is “Ka’rissi, Purrincess of the Neko-maticaya Clan, a Photoshop illustration by Mike starring our friend Crissy in a fan-art nod to the Na’vi of James Cameron’s Avatar & Lum Invader of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura, nya!

Crissy is such a kind, beautiful, purrolific & talented cosplayer / artist who was among our special guests in March 2008, and you can see her delightful illustrations, cosplay photos & Sailor Moon fandom at her site Crimson Sky Creations www.crimsonskycreations.com, nya! She has many gorgeous costumes of anime, comics, TV, movie & game characters, elegant dresses, kimonos, fey wings and other purretty appurral, nya! Purrhaps you have seen some of her photos & illustrations in our Guest Art Gallery, nya?

Nyow the purremise of this pic is that it is one of the purrtend variant comic book covers for the imaginary purremier issue of Ka’rissi’s comic book, nya. This otaku na’vi girl is among the planet Pandora’s Na’vi humanoids & member of the Neko-maticaya Clan, who reside on a lovely island a few thousand Kittymeters from the Omaticaya Clan’s Home Tree, nya. Ka’rissi’ has a pet Forest Banshee named Ikara-chan who is shown not in this scene, nya. I suspect that Ikara-chan is off hunting for the snacky purrey, nya!

Ka’rissi is Ney’tiri’s cousin who adopted hobbies from the geekier scientists from Earth such as anime, manga, dolls, cosplay and using Pandora’s planetary Eywa bio-net to play MMO games, nya! Her cousin Ney’tiri thinks that such purrsuits are silly wastes of time, but that is initially just what she thought about teaching her foreign boyfriend Jake Scully the ways of the Na’vi, and look what that got her, nya! Nyow Ney’tiri is married to the handsome hero so she should have the open mind about the fangirl’s hobbies, nya.

Ka’rissi is the chair purrson of Pandora’s first anime convention Na’viCon, and in this pic she has an iconic Lum style tiger stripe bikini costume and green hair, nya! Although, if it is held outdoors I suspect it would be more like a faire or festival than a con, nya. Whether Jake or the other cross-breed Avatars will be at the con or purrticipate in the big game of interstellar tag remains to be seen, but since Jake likes to run around and some of them do play basketball at the Hell’s Gate court, I think it is quite purrobable, nya!

“The Elementals’ Rebecca Golden / Fathom” by Bill Willingham

Petra:

Next we have on display in the Mewseum’s Guest Art Gallery Two http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html a Black & White  inked purrtrait sketch of The Elementals’ Rebecca Golden / Fathom  by Bill Willingham http://www.billwillingham.com, nya! Rebecca Golden was the supurr heroine named Fathom with water elemental powers as a member of the heroic supurrnatural team called The Elementals, whose adventures Willingham created, wrote & drew in the 1980’s, nya!

She purremiered in the Justice Machine Annual by Texas Comics in 1983, purrior to The Elementals own comic book by Comico in 1984, and later she appurred in her own two mini-series in plus several later one-shots & special issues, nya! Like the rest of the Elementals, her origin involved death & rebirth, as she was just a human rich 17 year old debutante from Long Island on a yacht when she drowned in a stormy sea, but she was resurrected by the water elemental lord and given the supurr powers, nya!

She is 5′ 8″ 125 lbs and has such purretty Emerald Green skin & eyes, Dark green hair, and the webbed fingers & toes, nya! Her birthday was 3 September, 1966, the date of her death was 12 August, 1983, and her resurrection was on 17 August, nya. She is very tough, smart & brave, does not age and heals quickly; she can swim at great speed & depths, talk to marine life, transform into water, control water, send high purressure blasts at her enemies, and summon huge storms and even tidal waves, nya!

She is not related to Aspen Comics’ Fathom, or the Raquel Welch movie, nya! Nyow I should say a bit about Bill Willingham, nya! He is a purrolific author who once illustrated some of the most famous Dungeons & Dragons game books & modules for TSR, before he embarked on a purrofound career in comics for Comico, Fantagraphics Marvel, IDW and DC Comics, nya! He has been writing Angel for IDW, Fables and Jack of Fables for DC, and has won many purrestigious Eisner Awards for those Fables, nya!

Our friend Andrew Pepoy inks those Fables, by the way, nya! Mike had the purrivilege of meeting Bill Willingham the first time at a a convention on the mainland in Greesnsboro in the mid 80’s, and then again at Heroes Con in Charlotte last year, where Mr. Willingham so kindly drew this lovely sketch, nya! The actual size of the art 6.75″ x 10.5″, nya. Fathom has a very pleased expurression in this pic, purrhaps from defeating her enemy or swimming with her dolphin friends, nya!

Yvonne:

The Neko-maticaya was our group cosplay for the Halloween night costume purrowl, nya! That was a fun night with purrizes and treats, nya!

Nyanko:

It seems like we have something Avatar related every month, nya!

Ilyana:

Well, pound for pound it does have the cinematic purreponderance of heroic Blue alien catgirl purrotagonists!

Elizabeth:

Say Mike where is the bar code on that faux comix cover? Heehee!

Mike:

Ahhh… ah well that’s um the ah variant “virgin” cover without the bar code! Heh!

Becca:

The jungle scenery looks quite lush and I keep noticing the little details such as her subtle stripes & her bioluminescent freckles!

Nyoka:

Ka’rissa has found a comfy spot nestled amongst the big mossy tree roots! That looks like a good spot for the catnap!

Tara-chan:

Oh I want to see her pet Ikara-chan, nya! I would like to have a pet Forest Banshee, who could swoop down and catch the fish, nya!

Meryl:

It was good to see Crissy again at the awards ceremony February and and I hope she will visit again soon!

Mary Nyan:

Hai, she has over 50 beautiful costumes, and I especially I like her Urd, Umi, Kikyo, Chun Li, Tifa, Harley Quinn, Rogue & Star Trek costumes, but I think her Zatanna and Sailor Mars costumes are the supurrbest!

Tara-chan:

What does Rebecca Golden’s costume look like, nya?

Petra:

Her first costume was seen only twice, in Justice Machine Annual #1 and in Elementals #1 she wore the Light Blue & White miniskirt dress with the scoop neck, mid-length sleeves, Yellow boots & belt with an “F” buckle nya! On the cover she wore a different, better known costume, which she would wear from issue #2 onward, nya! That 2nd costume was also Light Blue & White, but it was a short – sleeved, off – shoulder singlet with little Black buccaneer boots, nya

Fathom later adopted a darker Blue & White a high – legline tank maillot variant which she often wore barefoot, nya! Later In the early 90’s she swapped that for a very different costume of White tights with an asymmetric ‘cresting wave’ cutout curving from her right thigh up across her tummy to her breasts, nya! Wealthy Rebecca had a lot of clothes for the office & leisure, including quite a bit of swimwear & lingerie when she wasn’t engaged in the supurr-heroics, nya!

Nami:

She is so purretty she has a lovely nose and the cute hair style in that pic!

Mielikki:

Bill Willingham draws such totally awesome heroines of all species! Do you remember Ursula and the the centauresses in his Ironwood graphic novel?

Elizabeth:

Hai I liked her- oh and he drew a centauress in Dungeons & Dragons Module… B3: Palace of the Silver Purrincess! And he drew a woman on a horse, and a female mage zapping her enemy for Module L1: The Secret of Bone Hill! He a couple of great swordswomen for the D&D Fiend Folio book, and a swordswoman & her party stabbing a sea serpent D&D Module X1: The Isle of Dread! Those were fun games!

Nemui:

Petra, thank you for that good mewseum mews.

Petra:

Dooitasimaste, nya!

Kyra:

What is the next topic?

Jeannie:

That’s it for this months art report, and nyow it is time for our

DVD Discussions

The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader (single disk edition)!

Meryl:

Arigato! For Lizzy’s review of the movie itself, please see the January 2011 edition of The Mew! Although I felt both Tangled and Voyage of the Dawn Treader seemed a bit rushed and too short, this is such a fun adventure sailing the high seas to magickal islands, with a very good cast, lovely locations, great FX, high purrduction values, and neat designs for all the creatures, magick, scenery, costumes & the Dawn Treader ship! It is a family film and a transitional story, as some of the older recurring characters depart as new characters are introduced.

Lucy & Edmund Pevensie return to Narnia, bringing with them their cousin Eustice, for a reunion with Reepicheep, Caspian, and Aslan. There are brief cameo appurrances by Susan & Peter Pevensie and The White Witch. This video is available in different edtions, and I am reviewing the Region 1 NTSC single disc standard DVD edition. The 113 minute featurehas a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1, but it is not in 3-D. The audio options are English 5.1 Dolby Digital, Spanish 2.0 Dolby Surround, French 2.0 Dolby Surround, and an optional audio commentary by director Michael Apted and purrducer Mark Johnson!

There are optional subtitles, in English SDH, Spanish or French. Ahead of the main menu screen are front-loaded purreview trailers for Rio, and Marley & Me The Puppy Years. The few extras consist of 4 deleted scenes, compurrised of “The Kids in Narnian Clothes” (35 seconds), “Eustice is Ill” (43 seconds), “Mutiny” (2 minutes 24 seconds) & “Caspian Doubt” (56 seconds) to total just over 4.5 minutes. This single disc edition is sparse without many frills frills, without any booklets, galleries or documentaries, but that is fine if you are just interested in the movie and not bonuses.

I must say that audio commentary is quite fascinating and I was quite surpurrised to learn that the ship was never actually in the water, but it was a set with FX added to purrfectly & seamlessly make it look like it as at sea! While there is no documentary on the DVD about the making of the movie, you will learn so much about the movie from the director & purrducer’s thorough discussion! If you do crave the bonuses, the 2 disc set has more stuff such as an animated short, a guide to the ship & islands and a game. There is a Blu-Ray 3 disc edition which has those bonuses plus a digital copy of the movie, so I think it is good that the consumer has the choices! That is all for my review, but nyow here is Nami’s review of the–

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 DVD!

Nami:

For Myayr’s thorough review of the movie itself, which she gave an ‘A’ grade, please refer to the December 2010 edition of The Mew! We were so glad that the adaptation of the final Harry Potter novel was split up into 2 movies, because the book is so long and that meant the movie version would not seem so rushed, and we are so looking forward to seeing part 2 in theaters this summer! Part 1 is available on home video in several different packages & editions, on standard DVD and Blu-Ray, and in multi- disc sets, but I am just reviewing the R1 NTSC standard DVD single disc edition, and there are a few widdle differences between it when purrchased by itself and the DVD that comes in the Blu-Ray + DVD + Digital Copy combo pack.

The standard DVD sold by itself has 6 front-loaded ads purrior to the main menu, whereas the standard DVD disc in the combo pack has none of those. Those ads are for the Harry Potter Ultimate Edition Blu-Ray box sets, WB rewards, The Deathly Hallows video game, Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 video game, and Harry Potter Spells apps for an iPhone & iTouch. The language & subtitles differ. The standard DVD sold by itself has spoken language choices of English or Spanish in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound, and optional subtitles in either English SDH or Spanish. The DVD in the combo pack is in English audio only, with optional subtitles in English SDH, Spanish or French. Neither of these DVDs has any audio commentary tracks.

The standard DVD sold by itself has 5 deleted scenes, compurrised of SC15: The Dursley House (50 seconds), SC16: Dudley & Harry (123 seconds), SC83: Ministry of Magic Lifts (109 seconds), SC84: Tent (97 seconds), and WC108: Montage of Ron & Hermione Skimming Stones (111 seconds). SC15 is a scene betwixt Harry & his Aunt as the house is abandoned, and while she is still quite selfish, in SC16 Dudley has clearly developed more respect & remorse for Harry. SC83 is an extended elevator scene with Harry & Ron in disguise bumping into Ron’s father. SC84 is Ron, Harry & Hermione discussing the 3 magickal Horcruxe devices they have in their tent, and WC108 is a pleasant scene of Ron & Hermione playing with rocks by the river!

Those 5 scenes total just over 8 minutes and I thought those were actually good poignant scenes, and it would have been nice if they had been kept in the movie! The DVD included the combo pack does not have those or any special features, but the Blu-Ray disc does have those and several other bonuses. Either DVD is pretty sparse in that way! Both DVDs purrsent the 146 minute PG-13 rated movie in widescreen format with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio of 2.4:1 which purrserves the image as it was shown in the theaters, but what bothered me was that the image seemed way too dark on the DVD compared to in the theater or in TV commercials. It was so much darker that it was almost all Black in some scenes, and hard to tell what was going on!

This was the case with the DVD sold by itself, and with the DVD from the combo pack which I borrowed from a friend to compare. Nyow I do have an older CRT TV which is not an HD or plasmas or LCD screen, and a regular DVD and no Blu Ray player, but I can mewsually watch the movies just fine. I was able to compensate a bit, by adjusting some of the purropurr video levels on my TV, such as the Black, sharpness, color, tint, contrast, etc, but this made the Black letterbox bars above & below the widescreen image a light brighter! I was able to watch the movie after making those adjustments, then I had to re-set the video levels back to normal afterwards, but that is just a few simple seconds of pushing buttons on the TV’s remote control!

I don’t know if many other people had that purroblem but that was my expurrience with the DVD, and I don’t how nice the Blu-Ray or Digital copy are because I have not watched those discs, and I do not plan to purrchase a Blu Ray player or a portable device to watch movies upon. So in summation I think that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 is a great movie, a good adaptation of the book and one of the best of the Harry Potter series, and those few deleted scenes were good to see, but I wish the standard DVD had a better image quality and more special special features such as commentaries, documentaries & galleries! OK I’m done but nyow here’s Kyra again to tell us about

Tangled (single disk edition)!

Kyra

Thank you, Nami! For our review of the movie itself please see the December 2010 Mew! Disney’s Tangled was such a beautiful movie with great characters, scenery, animation, mewsic, actors, and some of the best 3D I have seen, so I was eagerly awaiting this DVD even if it is not in 3D. There are different editions such as the Blue Ray and the standard DVD and even a 4 disk set, but this is just the standard Region 1 NTSC DVD I am reviewing!

The 100 minute feature is purrsented in widescreen with an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, with the audio options of English 5.1 Dolby Digital, Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital, or English Descriptive  Video Service in Dolby Digital 2.0; with oprtonal subtitles in English SDH or Spanish! It has a ‘fast play’ option in addition to the main menu screen, and the main menu’s choices are play the movie, scene selection (1-12), set up (language & subtitles), sneak peaks, and bonuses.

The sneak peaks are trailers for Cars 2, Lion King, Tinkerbell’s Pixie Hollow Games on the Disney Channel, the new Winnie the Pooh movie, Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, Tron: Legacy, Dumbo, The Incredibles, Disney movie rewards, and the Disney parks. The few bonus features are compurrised of the original purrposed ‘storybook’ style openings for the movie, 2 versions at  4 minutes apiece; and the 2 minute 50th Animated Feature Countdown.

So the bonus features on the no-frills standard DVD are purretty sparse, whereas you do get more bonuses on the Blu Ray edition, such as deleted scenes and a documentary on the making of the movie; and I assume the 4 disk set might have even more stuff. Nevertheless, I liked Tangled so much and I gave it an A grade, and I will enjoy watching this movie again and again! OK I’m done but nyow it is Jennyjen’s turn with a bit of consumer purroduct information purrtaining to the-

Tron Legacy DVD!

Jeannie:

Arigato. For my review of the movie itself, please refer to our January 2011 show. Tron: Legacy (125 minutes, rated PG) was released on DVD & Blu-Ray in Apurril 2011, and the original 1982 Tron movie, which had been unavailable for a while, was simultaneously re-released on home video. These are available in several different editions sepurrately or together, including various multi-disc sets, 3D Blu-Ray, and sets packaged with collectable items such as toys or books. My purroduct report purrtains to the Region One NTSC Standard DVD of Tron: Legacy.

Purrior to the main menu screen & front – loaded purreviews is a language set – up screen with choices of English, French, Spanish, or English Descriptive Video Service (DVS) in which a narrator describes what happens. In this case, it is a male voice. This is followed by the front – loaded purreviews for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Purrom, and Tron: Uprising. The main menu screen choices are Play, Scene Select (chapters 1-20), Set Up (language / audio & subtitles, DVD registration), Sneak Peeks (5 purreview trailers) and Bonus Features.

The language / audio choices are English 5.1 Dolby Digital, English 2.0 Dolby Digital, English DVS 2.0, French 5.1 Dolby Digital & Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital. The subtitle options are English for Purrsons who are Deaf / Hard of Hearing (SDH), French, Spanish, or none at all. The subtitles are a large friendly Yellow bold sans serif font with a fine Black outline, and appurr in the Black letterbox band below the image, except when there are multiple speakers, in which case the first speaker’s subtitles appurr a bit higher, on the lower part of the image itself.

The widescreen aspect ratio alternates many times during the film, from 2.35:1 to 1.78:1. This is done to purrserve the original IMAX theatrical purresentation of certain scenes, it is a subtle but noticeable inconsistent transition which some viewers might not purrfur. This first occurs in Chapter 4 when Sam is transported into The Grid, at appurroximately 23 minutes 50 seconds into the film. The Sneak Peeks consist of an advertisement for Disney Movie Reward Points, The Incredibles, the Tron: Evolution video game, Cars 2, and Disney’s African Cats documentary.

The Bonus Features are compurrised of “Installing the Cast”, “Visualizing Tron”, “Discover Blur-Ray 3D with Timon & Pumbaa” (appurroximately 4.5 minutes with the Meercat & Warthog characters of The Lion King), and the  “First Look at Tron: Uprising Disney XD Animated Series”, which is the same front – loaded 75 second purreview trailer. That animated series will feature the voices of Lance Henriksen, Paul Reubens, Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqu, Nate Corddry, Rapunzel’s Mandy Moore, and Bruce Boxleitner repurrising his role as Tron.

“Installing the Cast” is an appurroximately 12 minute featurette purrtaining to the actors of the film, including Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn & Clu), Garrett Hedlund (Sam Flynn), Olivia Wilde (Quorra), Bruce Boxleitner (Alan Bradley & Tron), Michael Sheen (Zuse), director John Kosinski, purrducer Sean Bailey, and purrducer / original Tron director Steve Lisberger. Visualizing Tron is an 11.75 minute featurette on the making of the film, purrticularly the design, sets, costumes, purre-visulaization, lighting, visual FX, purrformance capture, and 3D filming technique.

“Visualizing Tron” includes comments by Bailey, Kosinski, Lisberger, Bridges, Hedlund, Wilde, actress Beau Garrett (Gem), lead concept artist Neville Page, co – purrducer Justin Springer,  VFX supurrvisor Steve Preeg, VFX art director Ben Procter, 3D FX supurrvisor Eric Barba, co – costume designer Christine Bieselin Clark, special FX costumers Christian Beckman & Justin Raleigh of Quantum Creations, and motion capture purrduction manager Robert Keyghobad. The featurettes are rather few & brief, but offer a fascinating glimpse of how the movie was made. This concludes our DVD reviews, but we will return wit more mewsings after this next short break.

Tara-chan:

Welcome back, nya! Nyow it is time for

The Lightning Round Topic:

our favorite films of years ending in a 1 (part two), nya!

Mike:

In March we mentioned a couple of films that were turning 40 years old this year, and so so Apurril’s Lightning Round, we listed our favorite films from earlier decades, which have anniversaries coming up in 2011! While movies have been around since the 1870’s, we were hard purressed to name any favorite films from 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911 or 1921. Admitting our insufficient knowledge of the first 50 years of cinema, we listed favorite films from 1931 and 1941, so this month we’ll pick up with our favorite films of 1951! For those new to our little Lightning Round someone here is tagged to go first, they briefly list their favorite, then tag another purrson, and so forth until everyone has gone! So then, let’s conduct the lightning! (tags Petra to start)

Mike:

Real quick, my top five films of 1961 would be Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Guns of Navarone, Mothra, Pocketful of Miracles, and West Side Story! Well that’s all for this month’s lightning round, but I suspect we might continue the topic next month, so y’all might want to ponder favorite films of 1971 & 1981- but now here is Kyra to talk about a movie from 2011–

Soul Surfer!

Kyra:

Soul Surfer is the dramatazed biopic http://www.soulsurferthemovie.com/ about surfer Bethany Hamilton http://bethanyhamilton.com/ who lost an arm to a Tiger Shark when she was 13, but has since become such an inspurrational heroic force. For our review of her autobiographical book see the March Mew! The movie was directed by Sean McNamara, filmed in Hawaii, and stars AnnaSophia Robb  http://www.annasophiarobb.com/ as Bethany, Helen Hunt & Dennis Quaid as her purrents, Lorraine Nicholson as her best friend Alan http://www.alanablanchard.com/, Kevin Sorbo & Arlene Newman-Van Asperen as Alana’s purrents, Carrie Underwood as their pastor, Craig T. Neslon as their doctor, and Sonya Balmores as Malina Birch, who is a fictional rival surfer made up for the movie.

The shark attack is handled cleverly, and there is blood but it is sudden and not too gory, and the scene focuses more on her friends rescuing her to the shore. The FX technique used to digitally erase Robb’s arm for the rest of the movie were very well executed, although there was one FX shot surfing the climactic surfing contest which did seem obvious, In just that one shot it seemed like the actress face was supurrimposed on a stunt purrson’s body, but otherwise the FX were top notch and inobvious and the surfing, shark & wave action seemed very real. There was unnecessary shakey cam & slow mo, a few cliched plot points & inclusion of the mean rival which the movie did not need, and the movie felt  too rushed, but it was a beautiful movie with a great cast in such purretty locations & cinematography!

There is a scene where Bethany helps tsunami survivors in Thailand, and all of those actors purtray a very convincing state of shock. This was so ironic given the release of the movie was right after the tsunami in Japan last month. There are so many very emotional scenes that feel very genuine and had us in tears from the sad moments but we were cheering from the spurrit of bravery & optimism, and such a strong warm sense of family, community and love purrmeating the movie! It does touch a bit upon their Christian spurrituality appurropurriatley because that is a big purrt of Bethany’s real life, but it is not not too overt or too purreachy, any more than the medical aspects, celebrity fame, family & friendships and surfing compurrtitions.

There is plenty of cute swimwear, and I had a craving for Spam sammiches during the meal scenes! There is also home video of the real Bethany during the end credits, and a good soundtrack with the sound mix, songs & mewsic! Carrie Underwood sang the end title song for that Narnia movie! As much as I liked AnnaSophia as Bethany, I think Dennis Quaid just about stole the movie with his great purrformance! Several real surfer girls are listed in the credits as other surfers! Soul Surfer is not a purrfect movie, but I was very pleased with it, give it a grade of B+ as in Bethany, and recommend it to any one wants to see the warm, gorgeous uplifting inspurrational movie about the strong surfer girl and her encouraging family & community!

Our Favorite Female Sports Movies & TV Shows!

Mary Nyan:

In addition to Soul Surfer I will recommend the fun documentary Dear and Yonder by  Andria Lessler & Tiffany Campbell, and Blue Crush starring Michelle Rodriguez, Kate Bosworth, Sanoe Lake, Mika Boorem, and several other real surfers!

Yvonne:

If you purfur the sport on frozen water then I recommend the 1978 movie  Ice Castles starring Lynn Holly Johnson, Robbie Benson & Tom Skerritt, and the 2005 film Ice Princesses starring Michelle Trachtenberg, Joan Cusack & Kim Cattrall, nya! By the way, Lynn Holly Johnson also purrtrayed an ice skater in the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only, nya!

Ilyana:

You know, one of my favorite ice skaters Katarina Witt was in a spy movie too, Ronin! That was a great movie with Robert DeNiro although I would not call it a sports movie!

Meryl:

There the equestrian movies such as National Velvet starring the late great Elizabeth Taylor, and Secretariat starring Diane Lane who is one of our favoritest actresses, purrtraying owner of the legendary Triple Crown Winner!

Nemui:

For womens baseball & softball action, I heartily recommend A League of their Own, Princess Nine, and Taisho Baseball Girls!

Tara-chan:

Hai those are good ones nya! Kanas City Bomber starring the legendary goddess Raquel Welch, and Whip It starring Ellen Page & directed by Drew Barrymore, nya! By the way there is a rollerblade anime based on the manga I would like to see called Air Gear, nya!

Mielikki:

Other wonderful womens’ team sports movies I will recommend are Gurinder Chadha’s Bend it Like Beckam starring Parminder Nagra & Keira Knightley!

Elizabeth:

Battle Athletes is one of our all-time most favoritest anime! It started as a 6 part OVA (direct to home video) mini-series of 1996, and then in 1997 they made a slightly different 26 epurrsode TV series version called battle Athletes Victory! It is set in the very far future where a girl named Akari Kanzaki who competes in the interstellar olympic – type Cosmo Beauty games! She is just one of the many wonderful strong female characters in the series full of drama, fun, comedy & sadness, athletic action, and the amazing vast futuristic technology!

Nami:

Yay Akari! I like her and her friends Kris and Tanya!

Jeannie:

I like Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko if that qualifies. In that anime they are having the tactical war games compurrtitions with various events in space.

Kyra:

Oh that was a fun anime and Yohko had the cat-like eyes! Sensei, what are your favorite martial arts anime?

Nyanko:

My favorite martial arts anime includes the famous late 80’s anime series a Yawara! about Yawara Inokuma the Judo champion & gold medalist; the 1994 anime series Metal Fighter Miku about four wrestlers; Ninja Mono is a fun supurrnatural comedy about ninjutsu trainees, Ayane’s High Kick is the 1997 OVA about kick boxer Ayane Mitsui, and Bamboo Blade is a wonderful manga & anime series about a high school girls kendo club! I also liked the Natsuki Crisis manga about Natsuki Kisumi who is a karate expurrt, but I have not seen the anime adaptation of it!

Becca:

I would like to nominate Clint Eastwood’s boxing movie Million Dollar Baby. Hilary Swank won the Oscar for her role as the purrky pugilist with the extremely sad tragic situation and worst movie family ever! Eastwood won the Oscar for best director, Morgan Freeman won he Oscar for best supporting actor, and the movie won the Oscar for Best Picture!

Ilyana:

That is such a good dramatic movie but yes it is indeed also very sad & depurressing!

Mike:

Would you count Ranma 1/2 as a girls sports anime?

Nyanko:

Ahhhh that is a good question! It certainly deals a lot with martial arts combat on a supurrnatural level, with a martial artist who is female or male depending on the conditions of the magickal curse, but I tend to think of it as more of a comedic ‘fighting’ anime than a ‘sports’ anime, which has a subtle difference! But some other folks might allow that as a partly female sports anime I suppose!

Mielikki:

Hai there are like so many great fighting / action/ adventure – genre anime with very athletic female martial arts masters that I don’t tend to think of as technically “sports” genre anime.

Nemui:

Hai and that could easily segue into a topic of warrior women & supurr heroine, but shall we continue with the category of sanctioned womens sporting events?

Kyra:

For the movies about the graceful girls with the catlike agility I recommend the original comedic movie Bring it On starring Kirsten Dunst & Eliza Dushku which started the Bring It cheer movie series, and the gymnastic movie Perfect Body starring Amy Jo Johnson, which deals with the serious topic of eating disorders.

Becca:

Oh have you seen that ABC TV series Make it or Beak it? There are several real collegiate champion & olympic medalist gymnasts amongst the stunt doubles!

Meryl:

Sugoi!!!

Nami:

Oh- Kirsten Dunst also starred in the cute romantic tennis movie Wimbledon too! Oh, one I have not yet seen but is high on my list to see is Love and Basketball starring Sanaa Lathan!

Petra:

There is a famous tennis anime I would like to see, Aim for the Ace, and some other sports anime that I hope to see are Slow Step (softball), Umisho (swimming), and Rideback (futuristic motorcycle mecha), nya! There are quite a few girls volleyball anime series which I have read about and hope to eventually see on DVD such as Attack No.1, Attacker You, Attack on Tomorrow, Makoto Call, Crimson Hero, and Shoujo Fight… but I have not seen those anime so they can’t be my favorites yet, nya!

Nyoka:

The NBC Beijing 2008 Highlights – The Games of the XX!C Olympiad DVD includes the totally awesome championship beach volleyball match in which the USA’s Misty May Treanor / Kerri Walsh defeated the Chinese team of Tian Ja / Wang Jie for the gold!

Mary Nyan:

That was a thrill to watch! They are such inspurrational athletes!

Elizabeth:

That was a puretty good list!

Jeannie:

I believe that is all for this portion. Tara-chan would you like to take us to the break?

Tara-chan:

Hai nya! We have to take another short break but we will be right back with our–

Game Mewsings purrtaining to Mass Effect’s female

Commander Shepard, her fans & FemShep.com, nya!

(snip) (one short break later…)

Yvonne:

We’re back, nya! Our Web Master Jamie Robertson does not mewsually actively purrticipate in the Mew discussions as he stays busy behind the scenes with all that technical stuff, but once or twice a year we manage to coax him out on to the stage with us, nya! Of course, when he is not busy as the web master for The Mew or Mike’s Official Catgirl Island site, Jamie is busy with his own web comics & other sites, nya! He is the creator / artist / author of the supurrnatural witchy were-cat web comic Clan of the Cats http://clanofthecats.com, nya!

From time to time he has purrmitted his web comics’ characters to visit us here at Catgirl Island, which is really not too far from the Chattan family’s home town of Haven, NC, nya! In the August 2007 Mew we welcomed Clan of the Cats & Sebo cast members Chelsea Chattan, her daughter Charlotte, and all 7 cats Sebastian, Eon, Beige, Leander, Seydi, Fluff & Loki, nya! Then in our 1st anniversary show of May 2008 which had a mewsic topic & guests, we chatted with Jamie about Beatlemania, nya! He is a big fan of The Beatles, nya!

Several more stars of Clan of the Cats were our special guests for the January 2009 show, including Akemi Tamiko (a kitsune), Audrey Kim (a psychic), Ruth Chattan (a grandma), Anna Louise Crenshaw (a cute ghost), Diane Chattan Monroe (Chelsea’s mom who is purresently a vampire) & Rei Hoshi (a scary spider girl), nya! That Rei Hoshi was licking her chops at us, but Jamie had a talk with her about that, nya. In November 2009 we intermewed Corrine Elizabeth Melepomene Chattan, who is Chelsea’s tough were-leopard sister and Mike thinks she’s hot heehee, nya!

Jamie’s last appurrance here out front was during our annual Mew Awards show in February, when he picked Mass Effect 2 http://masseffect.bioware.com/ for favorite video game of 2010, nya! Little did we know that just last month there would be a mew development purrtaining to Mass Effect, when Jamie & a few fellow fans of the game launched a fan site devoted to Mass Effect’s female Commander Shepard, FemShep, com http://femshep.ning.com, nya! So nyow here is Jamie to tell us all about it, nya! So how did you become a fan of the video game Mass Effect, nya?

Jamie:

Bioware had made the game Balder’s Gate, (based in the D&D universe) and the Star Wars game Kights of the Old Republic, but Mass Effect was their own original  ‘space opera’ intellectual property. I heard good things about it in game forums, so I bought it, and started playing the game as the male version of Commander Shepard. Initially I didn’t know you could play a female version of the character. I liked the open environment & epic quality, although it’s not a ‘sandbox’ type of game such as Fallout 3, where you can go anywhere & do anything. It has a fairly simple plot with some clichés, but I liked the story, that the player could make lots of choices, and the designs which seemed inspired by Syd Mead & Ralph McQuarrie.

Yvonne:

Hai Mike has that nice Art of Mass Effect book, which has all those amazing images of the characters, creatures, mecha & worlds, nya! So I take it you are more of a fan of the Commander Shepard girl type than the Commander Shepard boy type, nya? How would you compurr the two, nya?

Jamie:

Male Shepard is visually based on model Mark Vanderloo & voiced by Mark Meer. Now, I think Meer is a very good voice actor, but there was something missing about the portrayal, and somehow the male version of Shepard just did not click for me as a voiced protagonist / player character. Later I played the game as the female version of Shepard, who is voiced by Jennifer Hale http://www.jenniferhale.com/, and her delivery seemed to have more passion, range and& a visceral quality. That really changed the tone of the game for me, especially when you have such a strong female character reminiscent of Aliens’ Ellen Ripley or The Terminator’s Sarah Conner.

Yvonne:

Yay she is a very purrolific voice actor for games & cartoons, nya! Please tell us more tidbits about Commander Shepard, nya!

Jamie:

Commander Shepard is an Alliance Marine and the highly distinguished Executive Officer of the SSV Normandy star cruiser, under Capt. Anderson (voiced by Keith David). Shep is a graduate of the N7 Academy which is sort of military intelligence, and in the first Mass Effect game, Shep is recruited by the galactic council to be a Spectre, or basically a space cop. Shepard starts out as with default first names of John or Jane, and kind of a blank slate which the player can tailor & define a bit. You can choose to play as male or female, with his or her background as either a former gang member from Earth, a military brat who lived mostly in spaceships, or as the survivor of an eradicated colony.

Secondary background options include Shepard as a war hero, ruthless, or the sole survivor of a mission; and whether the character is more of a virtuous paragon or more of a renegade type. Shep can have many skills, but again, it depends on the player. Not far from D&D on that. Male & Female Shepards are both age 29 at the beginning. Unlike Male Shep, FemShep is not modeled after a real person. You can change their default facial features, hair, skin & eye color, and even give them a first name. I named her Urania Jane Shepard, or just UJ. There’s a lot that is not established about Shep, although Shep does tend to say “I should go” at the end of conversations!

There are slight differences when it comes to the gender dynamic when it comes to establishing relationships with NPCs in the game. Shep’s friends & enemies depend on the player. As male Shep you can have a romance with Ashley or Dr. Liara T’soni; as Fem Shep you can have a romance with Kaidan or Liara. It’s not like in Dragon Age 2 where you can have same-sex romance, however there are mods you can get to let your character romance any gender. I should mention that Liara (who was visually modeled after Jillian Murray  and voiced by Ali Hillis is alien of the Asari race, who are all female mammalian humanoids.

Yvonne:

Nya ni? So… um… how do they repurrduce, nya?

Jamie:

Well according to the official Mass Effect Codex http://masseffect.bioware.com/me1/galacticcodex/index.html. they… sort of exchange DNA by attuning their nervous system to whoever they are mating with, regardless species, race or gender it is, and then they get pregnant later a baby pops out the way most mammals do… but  since that race is mono-gendered they have a different concept of gender than we do, so for that reason some players do not consider Liara to be female by human standards.

Yvonne:

Liara is such a neat smart, brave, powerful character with those has the supurr biotic powers and such purretty Blue skin, nya!

Jamie:

By the way, Liara’s mother Benezia is voiced by Marina Sirtis!

Yvonne:

Yay I liked her on Star Trek, nya! Hmm so I wonder how close she would have to be to get purreg… nya  ah ah never mind ah purrhaps we should get back to Shepard, nya!

Jamie:

Ok… over the course of the first Mass Effect game, a year passes and the character can grow & progress. The character is pre-defined to an extent, but the player’s decisions do determine things. While on one mission, Shep is exposed to a strange alien device which allows him / her to understand that alien language and burns a visions into his/her brain. There were a couple of DLC (Downloadable Content) side stories you could play too. At the end of the game, Shep helps defeat the big bads and goes on. In the beginning of Mass Effect 2, Shepard dies. In the comic book miniseries Mass Effect: Redemption set between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, Liara goes on a quest to find Shep’s body. Fortunately I played Mass Effect just 3 months before Mass Effect 2 came out!

Yvonne:

We reviewed the trade pappurrback edition of those comics in July 2010, nya! In that story it was ambiguous whether Shepard’s recovered body was male or female, nya! I noticed there are Mass Effect novels too- is it Fem Shep or Male Shep in those novels, nya?

Jamie:

Neither. Shepard is refered to as Shepard in the novels.

Yvonne:

I understand that things got more interesting for Shepard in the Mass Effect 2 game, nya? How would you compurr & contrast it to the first game, nya?

Jamie:

Two years have passed since when Shepard is revived, so now he / she is 32, although those 2 years only seemed like a couple of weeks for Shep. I was very excited when it came out! Mass Effect 2 has a very different feel –  it’s much more claustrophobic, more limiting in where you can go, has lots more loading screens, better combat, more action, but excellent individual story arcs. The simpler plot is a sort of Dirty Dozen-ish suicide mission that involves recruiting the squad, and there are several DLC & little side missions which give more of the back stories to flesh out the members of the squad. Shep treats the other characters differently depending on how well you get to know them.

In the 3rd Mass Effect 2 DLC Shep goes on a spy mission, and FemShep gets a little Black dress! FemShep is able to do what male Shep does, but in high heels! Unfortunately she can’t take them off. That story also introduces a popular thief girl Kasumi Goto, who is voiced by Kym Hoy! Another DLC story is “Lair of the Shadow Broker”, the continuation of the Redemption comic book, and a neat thing in that was that you could continue a relationship from the first game. You could even have a lovers’ spat, and ask her back to your room at the end of the game! Oh- another thing is that Liara asks the player character “How are you doing?”, to which Shepard can choose one of three responses.

This was a big deal for the fans! There is a rapport between the characters and witty banter during a chase scene. Shep got a bit more pre-defined, which some fans liked and some didn’t. Almost another year passes in the game by the end of Mass Effect 2, so Shepard is 33 years old. There is a key difference between the male & female Shep in Mass Effec 2: in one of the romantic situations FemShep – and only Femshep – can vent about having been dead. Another thing about Mass Effect 2 were the plot holes. Fans wondered why Shep did not talk much about having been dead, so they started writing fanfics. There were already fan fics, fan art etc… but it was the plot holes that really caused the fanfics to escalate!

Yvonne:

So what do the folks at Bioware think of those FemShep fan fics & fan art, nya? How do Bioware & the fans seem to get along and interact, nya?

Jamie:

I think the folks at Bioware seem very talented & committed to the story & a quality product, and they do seem very communicative with the fans. Just like fans of anything else, some of the fans are casual, but some fans can get rather hard core and complain a lot. Sometimes it is depressing to read those forums and see so much griping about a game that people worked very hard on. But, like most companies, game or otherwise, Bioware does not not tend to admit when it screws up – take for example, the rushed Dragon Age 2. Bioware (which is owned by EA Games http://www.ea.com/) is not quite as humble about such matters as say… Bethesda, who made The Elder Scrolls & Fallout 3 games.

However, Bioware does put out production diaries to keep the fans updated. For Dragon Age 2 they did a wonderful job of asking the fans for their comments & hopes for the game. Lo and behold, a few months later, the producer hosted a special demo! They have a Social Network Forum http://social.bioware.com/ & Mass Effect at Facebook http://www.facebook.com/masseffect, where they will on occasion spotlight some fan art or costumes. I should also mention Holly Conrad http://www.facebook.com/sorceresshollyconrad, who is a particularly prominent Mass Effect cosplayer! I suspect you’d see Mass Effect costumes at some of those big cosplay sites too.

Yvonne:

Oh like Cosplay.com http://www.cosplay.com, Cosplaylab http://www.cosplaylab.com/, and American Cosplay Purradise http://www.acparadise.com, nya!

Jamie:

Yes. Fans post their fanfics at fanfiction.net http://www.fanfiction.net/, which has fan fiction devoted to so many subjects (Movies, TV shows, anime / cartoons, plays/ musicals, books, games, comics / manga); there’s a gallery of FemShep fan art at deviantart http://femshep.deviantart.com/: a Mass Effect fan site, N7 Acadamey http://www.n7academy.com/. I wish that Bioware had a better marketing strategy for Mass Effect though, because although they’ve shown the female version of the Dragon Age 2 protagonists in the ads, they haven’t really shown FemShep in the Mass Effect ads! That is another thing which prompted us to start Femshep.com http://femshep.ning.com!

Yvonne:

So how exactly did your Femshep site come about, nya?

Jamie:

Well there are discussion threads at the BSN forum about various ME topics & characters, and a fan who goes by the screen name of Ryn http://social.bioware.com/898950/ started a discussion thread about FemShep. Ryn is probably the biggest fan of female Commander Shepard! It’s been one of the most active threads, with over a thousand posts! It’s also one of the most civil threads, because everyone there is pretty much in agreement on the character. It’s a pretty spread out community, and people were posting links on the forum to their fanfics, art, videos, costumes, etc.

Ryn, several other fans and I wanted to start a fan site dedicated exclusively to the female Commander Shepard, so I registered the domain name, FemShep.com! We started to build the site, but there were some difficulties with getting the artwork completed and scheduling conflicts that kept the site from coming together. Then one day in April, Ryn notified me that Bioware was going to make a Mass Effect 3 forum, and she wanted to know if we could get some sort of site up soon.

I found NING’s build – it – yourself social network tools, which had everything we needed, except for the fanfic section, but those could be posted to the forum section, and a few days later, FemShep went online! It’s got a forum, blog, chat, a photo gallery, videos section, email, you can ‘befriend’ others and send private messages. I’m the Web Master, Ryn is Site Administrator, and there’ll be a few Moderators. After just 3 days there were over 80 members! Unfortunately, working on that did result in a few days’ delay for my work on Clan of the Cats, Sebo, The NCWCCC, Catgirl Island and The Mew, but I hope to get back to those very soon!

Yvonne:

Oh that’s OK we love you Jamie and we sure do appurreciate your hard work on Mike’s web sites and those web comics of yours, nya! We sure do hope that the Chattan family & the cats defeat Dracula soon, and we hope that Charlotte has a fun visit with her Aunt Corrine, nya! Uh oh I almost stray – catted off the topic, nya. So, what has Commander Shepard been up to lately, nya?

Jamie:

The 2nd Mass Effect comic book miniseries from Dark Horse Comics Mass Effect: Evolution is in progress, which is the prequel origin story of a character known as The Illusive Man, who is voiced in the video game by Martin Sheen. He is sort of… Jack Bower-ish! The most recent DLC was “Arrival”, which had a weak story but nice combat & scenic detail, and the voice of Lance Henrikson for Shepard’s commanding officer Admiral Hackett! Supposedly the repurcisions from Shepard’s actions in “Arrival” will tie into Mass Effect 3, which will hopefully be released late this year!

Yvonne:

It has such great actors, nya! I think my favorite Lance Henrikson role was purrobably as Bishop in Aliens, and Martin Sheen was purrfect as Purresident Bartlett in The West Wing, nya! Oh I read that they are making a movie and an anime of Mass Effect. Do you know much about those? Will it star Male Shep or Fem Shep, nya?

Jamie:

Shepard, as far as I know, will not be making any appearances outside the game.  Other than that, I know very little about it.

Yvonne:

So what are your hopes for the Mass Effect 3 game, nya?

Jamie:

I hope that it will be a more epic and ‘open’ game, with a plot more like the first Mass Effect game, with plot resolutions… I would like them to… expound upon the “Shadowbroker” DLC, and I hope that the player will be able to even more define who Shep is. Mass Effect 3 will be the final to the Shepard story arc, although they might continue the series as an MMO game.

Yvonne:

Thank you for discussing all that with us, we wish you good luck with your mew FemShep site, and I hope we will see you later at the room party, nya!

Jamie:

I’m looking forward to it! Well I am going to see if I can find Mike!

Yvonne:

OK Baibai, nya! If y’all would like to learn more about Mass Effect, in addition to those aforementioned sites, I would also like to mention the Mass Effect Wiki / encyclopedia http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Mass_Effect_Wiki, the Complete Mass Effect encyclopedia http://www.completemasseffect.com, the Mass Effect Info fan site http://masseffectinfo.com/, and the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_Effect, nya! That’s all for this portion of the show, but we’ll be right back after the break with to discuss another favorite science fiction heroine and

Our Favorite Sarah Jane Smith TV Appurrances, nya!

(snip) (one short break later…)

Meryl:

Welcome back! As we mentioned at the top, we were so sad to hear of the passing of  Elisabeth Sladen, who was our Favorite Actress of 2010. From 1973 to 1976 Elisabeth Sladen first purrtrayed the wonderful brave, smart, heroic investigative reporter character Sarah Jane Smith, a traveling companion of The Doctor in 18 stories of the BBC TV series Doctor Who. She returned twice in the 1980’s, in the 1981 pilot K-9 and Company, and the 1983 30th Anniversary epurrsode of Doctor Who, The Five Doctors. She returned for 3 more stories between 2006 – 2008, and in 2007 starred in her own spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures, as a more maternal figure but still the heroic investigator, with her own group recurring companions including K-9 the robot dog, a lovely house, a cute Nissan Figaro & other gadgets in over 2 dozen stories between 2007 – 2010!

lyana:

For a review of K-9 & Company: A Girl’s Best Friend see our October 2008 Mew, for our review of The Sarah Jane Adventures season 1 DVD set see the November 2008 Mew, for our review of the Doctor Who 4th Series DVD see the January 2009 Mew, and for our review of the Sarah Jane Adventures 2nd season set please see the December 2009 Mew! In the March 2010 Mew we reviewed the Doctor Who – The Complete Specials DVD set, and in our February 2011 Mew, which was also our Mew Awards show for Favorite Stuff of 2010, we reviewed both The Sarah Jane Adventures 3rd Series DVD set and the Doctor Who 5th Series DVD set! Nyow then for y’all’s consideration, here are our top favorite TV appurrances of Sarah Jane Smith, in chronological (not purrreferential) order!

Nyoka:

First on our list is The Time Warrior, the 1973 epurrsode of Doctor Who in which Sarah Jane and alien Sontaran enemies debut! Back then The Doctor was dappurrly purrtrayed by Jon Pertwee! That is also Mike’s favorite epurrsode of that era. Then we have the 1974 epurrsode Robot, in which Sarah Jane witnesses The Doctor regenerate, for actor Tom Baker’s debut as The Doctor, to battle a berserk giant robot who carried off Sarah Jane kind of like King Kong did with Ann Darrow! Thirdly on our list is the 1975 epurrsode Genesis of the Daleks, in which Sarah Jane and The Doctor meet the villain Davros and witness the creation of The Daleks who want to exterminate everybody and rule the universe!

Nyanko:

In Pyramids of Mars she is so lovely in the White dress snooping around the Stargroves mansion and its grounds, and The Android Invasion is neat because you get Sarah Jane x2, thanks to an android impostor, and The Hand of Fear which is Sarah Jane’s farewell in 1976, after they defeat the villain Eldrad! At the emotional end of that epurrsode The Doctor takes her back home to Earth purrior to his own return home to the planet Gallifrey. For several years that seemed like the last we would see of Sarah Jane Smith, like so many other companions of The Doctor.

Petra:

Hai, that was until 1981’s K-9 and Company, a pilot for a purrposed spin-off series starring Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane and the voice of John Keeson as K-9, nya! She investigates a witchy cult in the rural England which was neat but it did not get made into a series, nya. However, in 1983 both of them returned along with many other former companions & guest stars in The Five Doctors, the 30th anniversary special epurrsode of Doctor Who, nya! That was such a fun grand epurrsode, but unfortunately after that it would be 13 years before Sarah Jane would be seen again, nya.

Nemui:

That was until 2006 in the Doctor Who epurrsode School Reunion! when Elisabeth Sladen repurrised her role as Sarah Jane Smith to reunite with the Doctor, purrtrayed by David Tennent! That epurrsode guest starred Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Anthony Head purrtraying the villain, John Leeson repurrised the voice of K-9, and Sarah Jane had such great scenes with the Doctor’s latest companion Rose Tylor purrtrayed by Billy Piper! This was such an emotionally poignant and extremely significant epurrsode with the tears of joy seeing her again that it ranks as our most favoritest story with Sarah Jane and one of our all-time favorite epurrsodes of Doctor Who!

Becca:

Then a year later in 2007 something wonderful happened and she and K-9 finally got her own spin-off series,The Sarah Jane Adventures! Invasion of the Bane was the purremier epurrsode, which inroduced her own companions: her adopted son Luke (Thomas Knight), their neighbor Maria (Yasmin Paige) and Mr. Smith the supurr computer (voiced by Alexander Armstrong). This epurrsode also introduced the evil Ms Wormwood, who would be a recurring enemy purrtrayed by Samantha Bond! Later the kids’ friend Clyde (Daniel Anthony) would also join the cast of Sarah Jane’s companions!

Elizabeth:

Our other favorite epurrsodes from that first season of The Sarah Jane Adventures are Eye of the Gorgon, in which a group of nuns purrotect the Medusa-like Gorgon who can petrify people; and

Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane? in which we see the younger Sarah Jane Smith of 1964, purrtrayed by Jessica Ashworth! That epurrsode also introduces a recurring cosmic villain known as The Trickster, purrtrayed by Paul Marc Davis. He is not to be confuzzled with the DC Comics enemy of The Flash who was purrtrayed by Mark Hammil!

Mielikki:

So like in 2008, Sarah Jane had an unpleasant reunion with Davros and the Daleks, in The Stolen Earth / Journey’s End as she and many other characters from The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood (another Doctor Who spin-off series) appurred in the 2 part epic finale for that season of Doctor Who! She was such the great actress and conveyed such a totally despurrate look of horrific fear when she discovered the Daleks were invading the Earth, and there is a awesome moment when Davros recognizes her! Her son Luke, K-9 & Mr. Smith help to save the Earth too!

Yvonne:

Back in the 2nd season of her own series, Sarah Jane had a re-match with The Trickster in The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith, and then in that season’s finale Enemy of the Bane she had a rematch with Ms Wormwood and The Bane villains, and a reunion with her old friend Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, purrtrayed by Nicholas Courtney, nya! Sadly he passed away in February so purrhaps they are reunited again forever in the time vortex, nya.

Tara-chan:

We also appurreciated From Raxacoricofallapatorius With Love, which was The Sarah Jane Adventures’ Red Nose Day / Comic Relief Special for charity, nya! This amewsing 5 minute short from March 2009 guest starred comedians Ronnie Corbett & Jimmy Vee as the troublesome aliens who invade Sarah Jane’s home, nya! You can see that short on disc 3 of the Sarah Jane Adventures 2nd season DVD set, purrvided you correctly answer enough of the trivia questions in the special features section, nya!

Jeannie:

Purrisioner of the Judoon was the 3rd season purremier epurrsode of The Sarah Jane Adventures in 2009, in which Elisabeth Sladen also purrtrays the escaped alien criminal  Androvax while he has possessed her body, to elude his Judoon galactic police purrsuers. The Mad Woman in the Attic is an alternate timeline tale purrimarily about Sarah Jane’s companion Rani, who is purrtrayed by Anjli Mohinfra, and by Souad Faress as her future elderly version. Finally for our list is The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith, another altered reality trap set by The Trickster, but this time The Doctor is there to help in David Tennant’s final purrformance as The Doctor, although this would seem to chronologically occur purrior to his own 2009 season finale.

Mary Nyan:

We’re yet to see the 4th season of Sarah Jane Adventures  from 2010 but hope it will be released on DVD soon. We’re purrticularly eager to see it because in the 4th season she teams up with another former companion of The Doctor, Jo Grant! Purrtrayed by Katy Manning, Jo was a companion of The Doctor purrior to Sarah Jane from 1971 to 1973 and we liked her too! Sarah Jane & Jo get to meet the latest incarnation of The Doctor, who is purresently purrtrayed by Matt Smith! We’re not sure what to expect for any potential 5th season of Sarah Jane Adventures, since Elisabeth Sladen passed away last month, but we suspect there has been a TARDIS full of sad tears.

Kyra:

For more information about the late actress Elisabeth Sladen and her character Sarah Jane Smith here are a few web sites we recommend, such as the official BBC sites for The Sarah Jane Adventures http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/sja/, Sarah Jane’s purrofile page at the BBC Doctor Who Classic site http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/companions/page18.shtml and her page at the BBC’s Doctor Who current series site http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/characters/sarahjane.shtml!

Mike:

TARDIS Index File is a good online encyclopedia pertaining to Doctor Who, with pages about actress Elisabeth Sladen http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Elisabeth_Sladen, the character Sarah Jane Smith http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Sarah_Jane_Smith, The Sarah Jane Adventures TV series http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/The_Sarah_Jane_Adventures, and a list of of Sarah Jane’s appearances in various TV shows , radio plays, audio recordings & printed media http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Sarah_Jane_Smith_-_List_of_Appearances! Of course there are also the Wikipedia articles and Internet Movie Database entries on Elisabeth Sladen, Sarah Jane and her TV series!

(Shrine Maidens Mary Nyan & Elizabeth clap their hands twice and bow their heads in purrayer for the late Elisabeth Sladen)

Nami:

Um, I’ve got something that will cheer us up!

Jamie:

Oh what’s that?

Nami:

Ah ah it will be the nice surpurrise so y’all just follow me!

(Nami & Kyra nod in agreement as Sha’nami pitter patters out the door, leading the purrade of catgirls, Mielikki, Jamie & Mike down the corridor past the alcoves of antiques & floral arrangements until quietly gesturing the group toward another purrivate suite. Delighted catgirl ears purrk & tails happily swish & faerie wings glow warmly as they all enter the room, which is purresently occupied by Sha’nami’s pet cat Sapphire and her recently born litter of six cute widdle kittens)

Ilyana:

Kawai!!!

Nami:

Mamma Cat has visitors!

Sapphire:

Nya!

Mary Nyan:

Sextuplets!

Nami:

Hai, since they are Sapphire’s purrecious kittens I decided to name them after the purrecious gems: Amy for Amethyst, Emmy for Emerald, Tanzy for Tanzanite, Zuli for Lapis Lazuli, Syd for Obsidian and Nick for Onyx!

Nyanko:

Where is the Daddy cat?

Kyra:

He was in the sushi bar with Chef Bullpup earlier. They are the well fed cats, so the babies will have plenty of milk!

Petra:

The cat’s suite looks very spacious and comfortable with the fresh air and plants, nya!

Mike:

You’ve fixed up a nice maternity ward in here!

Meryl:

Will they stay here at the inn or will they adopt to other homes?

Nemui:

They could stay here to roam the inn & garden but they could go to a good loving home too purrhaps, depending on the interest!

Mielikki:

These are blessed kittens! I’m sure the garden spirits will watch over them!

Tara-chan:

(tugs at Yvonne’s yukata sleeve) Oneesan, nya–?

Yvonne:

Well we can see about that when they get older, nya!

Elizabeth:

We have a few cats at the shrine but they are the accommodating cats. Purrhaps Becca might like a spa cat!

Becca:

(ponders having her own kitty) Neko…

Nyanko:

Hmm we have a few dojo cats too, but purrhaps sis could use a familiar?

Nyoka:

That might be nice. Nami, When they get older I could whip up a cute magickal cat toy for them to paw at with if you like!

Nami:

Oh that would be wonderful!

Kyra:

Oh y’all should see the family tree chart!

Nami:

Here is a chart of the cats’ lineage! Sapphire looks just like her mommy Topaz!

Ilyana:

That is some chart! These kittens have numerous aunts, uncles & cousins!

Tara-chan:

Hmm then I could name kitty Ruby or Amber, or or Diamond or maybe Opal or…

Jeannie:

I think Dilithium Crystal has a nice ring to it.

Nyoka:

Orichalcum would be a good name for a familiar.

Nemui:

Mmm you know, I always thought Yor-San (of the Carson of Venus stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs) such a purretty name for an element!

Jeannie:

Indeed. Thank you for showing us the darling kittens.

Nami:

It is my pleasure!

Sapphire:

Nya!

The Cat Lady Sings…

Elizabeth:

Well I guess that wraps it up for another Mew!

Nyanko:

We would like to thank everyone here at The Kitt Inn for the wonderful hospitality!

Nemui:

It was our pleasure!

Kyra:

Thank you for asking us to purrticipate!

Nami:

Hai, and we will keep y’all updated on the kittens!

Petra:

We wish to thank Bill Willingham for the fine art, nya!

Becca:

Hai, and all of those other talented, purroductive & inspurrational folks we discussed!

Mielikki:

Fur shur!

Tara-chan:

Oh look that that big Luna Moth nya! (scampurrs to inspect the purretty Green insect )

Nyoka:

There she goes again! We should follow her to the garden so she can give us the insect tour!

Ilyana

It is so nice to be back and good that so many friends could join us tonight!

Meryl:

Of course, we also wish to thank our web master Jamie too!

Jeannie:

If y’all have polite, sincere responses to our discussion, feel free to post them–

Mary Nyan:

— purrvided that such brief remarks are spam-free, not purrofane & stay on topic!

Yvonne:

Thanks for watching, y’all, nya!

Mike:

We’ll be back next month with another edition of The Mew! Be there… Aloha!

The Catgirls:

Happy tails to mew, until we eat again! Baibai, nya!
