June 2011 Catgirl Critics Media Mewsings

by

The cats & crew of The Mew were sad to hear of the passing of :

actor / director Jackie Cooper (15 September, 1922 – 3 May, 2001) who already had one of the most storied careers in Hollywood from child to adult star, long before he helped us believe a man could fly, as Perry White in Superman – The Movie;

master painter, comics & fantasy artist Jeffrey Catherine Jones (10, January 10, 1944 – 19 May, 2011) who passed away at the young age of 67, but whose works will forever continue to fill the world with more beauty;

actor / mewsician Jeff Conaway (5 October, 1950 – 27 May, 2011) who went on to that great big gig in the sky at the younger age of 61, whose impurressive credits already included Grease and Taxi, purrior to thrilling us as heroic Security Chief Zack Allan on the TV series Babylon 5;

and of one of history’s greatest purrofessional wrestlers, the astonishing Randy ‘The Macho Man’ Savage (15, November 1952 – 20 May, 2011) who left the ring and this world at an even younger age of just 58.

Since Last Time…

Mike:

So quickly what have y’all been up to since the last time?

Mielikki:

I am taking time off of the gold tour to spend more time here with my putting & chipping clinic and the faerie theatre is rehearsing As You Like It! Petra, I understand that the body art show at the Mewseum was a big hit!

Petra:

Hai hai we had the good crowd nya for the Spurring ink show! Nyoka-sensei, Beccabot, Nyssy & Tara-chan did a good job of organizing the event, nya!

Nyoka:

Arigato- we thank you for hosting the event! Tara-chan did not want to remove her tempurrary tiger stripes afterwards, hee!

Tara-chan:

I want the purrmanent stripe, nya!

Yvonne:

Not until you are older, nya!

Tara-chan:

OK how about… how about the ocelot spots, nya?

Yvonne:

That amounts to the same, nya! But if you want the make-up to cosplay then you-

Tara-chan:

Heron, nya! (the curious catgirl scampurrs off to view the arriving ducks on the lake)

Mary Nyan:

There she goes again! Um, so Nyoka-sensei how is your sister?

Nyoka:

She is supurr busy getting ready for the martial arts tournyament and then she has another modeling shoot!

Elizabeth:

Wow this is the busy month for that- Jenjen is away modeling the swim wear this weekend! She barely had time to go there right after the robot battle tournyament!

Mielikki:

Oh I wish I’d known, I could have flown or portaled here there myself!

Petra:

I know she would appurreciate that but she loves the aircraft, nya!

Nyoka:

So how are things at the shrine, the spa, and the cosplays?

Elizabeth:

Oh things are busy but fine with the vernal matsuris & purrades, and even with Becca becoming a full purrtner at the spa we stay booked up! She say Hi, by the way!

Yvonne:

Gosh it is hard to believe she has been here about a year nyow, nya!

Elizabeth:

Hai she is very happy! Other than the shrine and the spa it has been the beach volleyball purractice.

Petra:

Hai and I will see you on the sand tomorrow, nya! So how is the costume business Myayr, nya?

Mary Nyan:

It is the busy time for that due to the Summertime conventions but it is fun, and you should see the gorgeous Emerald brocade fabric I am making into the cape!

Mielikki:

Is that costume for you or a customer?

Mary Nyan:

That is the customer cape. I have been asked to make a Star Sapphire costume and I have a Queensblade costume in mind for myself!

Nyoka:

Sugoi!

Mary Nyan:

I still think you would be the purrfect Kazemon / Fairymon cosplay, Mie-sensei?

Mielikki:

heehee- I am shur!

Elizabeth:

Howboutchoo, Vonny?

Yvonne:

Oh my time is largely split between the purrcussion circle, purrticularly since we are purrforming more often with Jenjen’s belly dance troupe, especially with the dance festival coming up, and on my boat where the charters have been reeling in the big fish, nya! It is the Cobia time, nya! This week we the lines were taut at sweet spots with those nice Cobias, Mahi, Macs, Specs, Pigfish and Red Drums, nya! Tara-chan caught a some too- oh where is she… IMOTO-SAN, NYA!!!

Tara-chan:

(returns from her nature purrtoll) Hai, nya! I have made a note in my wildlife list of the ducks- and I saw the Box Turtle too, nya!

Yvonne:

The study is good but nyow you need to stay here for the show, nya!

Mike:

Your sister says that you caught some fish,

Tara-chan:

Hai I caught the Croakers and-and a Bluefish almost stole the jig but he wound up on the supurr table, nya!

Mary Nyan:

That is a good fish.

Petra:

So has Ilyana gone back to the mainland to resume her studies, nya?

Elizabeth:

Hai, although I doubt she is actually spending much time on land since she got that underwater ROV from JenJen, hee!

Nyoka:

This time next year she will have the masters degree!

Mary Nyan:

It will be the big party but we have a while to purrpare. What has Mike been up to?

Mike:

I’ve had a pretty busy social schedule between friends’ & relatives’ weddings, and the conventions!

Petra:

We’re sorry that you did not get into the artist alley at Animazement this year, nya.

Mike:

Yeah… that kinda sucked, but I was not the only one- a LOT of others did not get in this year since they dramatically reduced the number of tables, but I’ll have more about Animazement later in my con report. Of course, the weekend after Animazement is Heroes Con, which I always look forward too, and hopefully I’ll have a report on that next month! This year is Heroes Con 30!

the catgirls:

(snip)(one short break later…)

Tara-chan:

Aloha and welcome back to The Mew, nya! Nyow it is time for our–

Special Announcement: A Mew Tale of Catgirl Island, nya!

Yvonne:

We are pleased to announce a new Tale of Catgirl Island http://catgirlisland.net/tales.html added to the Catgirl Island Public Library titled “Anniversary” written by our friend Alexcia Reynolds http://www.sailorchristmas.com/, nya! She was a special guest who we intermewed back in the August 2010 Mew, nya! Purrhaps y’all have seen some of her creations in our Mewseum of Art, nya? She is a purrolific purrson who writes original and fan fiction, and her artistic purrowess includes drawing, photography, making plushies and other cute items, nya!

She is the renaissance girl, nya. Among Alexcia’s sites are Sailor Tiger’s Grotto http://mau.sailorchristmas.com (a Sailor Moon fan-senshi site), Cybernetic Showdown http://michi.byethost16.com/ (her original anthropomorphic characers & stories), her gallery at DeviantArt http://professoroak.deviantart.com/, and her Pokemon Amber http://pkmn.is-great.org/site which has fan-fics & art purrtaining to the Pokemon http://www.pokemon.com/ purrotagonist Ash Ketchum’s purrents Delia and Tony, because so little is officially known about Ash’s father, nya!

Alexcia determined that Catgirl Island would be the destination for Delia & Tony Ketchum’s romantic 20th Anniversary getaway, nya! Of course we think our little coastal carolina purradise filled with the southern hospurrtality & aloha spurrit would be the purrfect destination for the romantic vacation, nya! So nyow y’all can read about their week here, the tale is purrobably rated PG-ish for a comedic drunk flasher, heroic weener dog combat, the married couple’s romantic smooching, mew la la, nya!

the catgirls:

YATTAHHH, NYA!

Mielikki:

Seriously! But I hear that’s not all of the awesome new creations by Alexcia and other friends! Now here’s Petra to tell us about the latest

Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, fur shur!

Petra:

Arigato sensei, nya! Fortunately Jenjen was able to see this next pic purrior to her trip, because it is a pic of “Belly Dancing JenJen” by our friend and purrevious guest Crissy http://www.crimsonskycreations.com/, nya! Purrhaps you have seen Crissy’s other images in the mewseum, nya? When Jenjen is not busy as the model, she is the Belly Dance instructor at the island’s Purrforming Arts Center, nya! She’d better get back soon for the rehearsals, nya! In the mean time this gorgeous pic will captivate the visitors to the mewseum, nya!

Speaking of Crissy, Mike compiled a Crissy Cosplay Collage Quartet compurrised of photos by several terrific photographers who snapped the pics of her in the lovely costumes, nya! The first of the collages is the Green Yukata series, with 6 pics taken by PopeCerebus http://www.acparadise.com/acs/display.php?a=4782 of Crissy wearing the purretty Green yukata at the annual Sakura Matsuri in the beautiful Brooklyn Botanic Garden http:// www.bbg.org, nya!

The 2nd collage is the Crissy’s Cosplay Blues with the Blue theme in 4 photos: Tony K’s http://www.tyrusflynn.com/ pic of Crissy stunning as Streetfighter II’s Chun Li awaiting her next challenger, Reinii’ http://www.myspace.com/artchick848 pic of her as Magic Knights Rayearth’s Umi in her Goddess gown, Eurobeat King’s http://www.acparadise.com/loves/ebk, pic of her cute Otherworld Umi; and he also snapped the pic of Crissy as Final Fantasy VIII’s Rinoah Hartilly, nya!

The  Crimson Crissy Costume Collage has the Red theme! This includes David NG’s http://www.ng pics of Crissy in the kimono & miku shozoku, Louis’s http://www.refractorproductions.net/ pics of her in the Star Trek uniform, as the sleepy Fire Faerie, and as Sailor Moon’s Purrincess Mars; Usagi Seion’s http://users.livejournal.com/__sailormoon__/ pic of Crissy as the formal Purrincess Mars with fiery Red hair; and Jamie Golden’s http://community.livejournal.com/xgoldeniconsx/ pic of her Masked Sailor Mars concept, nya!

The 4th Crissy Collage depicts her as comics, anime & game characters: enchanting as Zatanna in a pic by LJInto http://www.flickr.com/photos/ljinto/, gorgeous as Gotham’s Harley Quinn in a pic by Jesse Angelop http://www.jesseangelo.com/, nothing can touch her as Rogue in a pic by a friend, nya; elegantly cute as Silver Millennium Purrincess Mars in a pic by Etaru http://etaru.com/, having a divine day as Ah My Goddess’s Urd in a pic by David NG, and she is the knockout as Final Fantasy VII’s Tifa Lockhart in a pic by Terry http://say.whatchulookingat.com/, nya!

Lastly but not leastly of the delightful mew pics is the “Kawaii Convention Catgirl” sketch by Nyaa! Kawaii Goods x3 http://nekowakusei.wordpress.com/, nya! They are a trio of lovely ladies who make cute anime & kitty themed purroducts such as plushies, hats & magnets which you can see at their Cat Planet blog about crafts, cats, & con appurrances, with mews and links to the members’ individual sites, nya!  Mike commissioned this sketch when he met them in the artist alley at Animazement, nya!

Nyoka:

Alexcia is such a multi talented author & artist! that is such a cute plushy doll!

Tara-chan:

I can’t wait to read her Poke-story, nya! I hope she and Michi & Tash can visit again soon, nya!

Petra:

That would be good! It is a good treat that Elisa can be our guest today, nya!

Mielikki:

Oh my stars, Elisa’s catgirl, mermaid & fey pics are so festive, sensual & pretty!

Yvonne:

Hai hai her watercolor technique is as delicate as petals yet it blooms with vibrant vernal passion, nya!

Mary Nyan:

Crissy is such a beautiful, purrolific and kind cosplayer, and she knows so many great photographers!

Elizabeth:

Crissy’s pic of Jen purrfectly captures the jingle of the jeweled tassels, swish of the tail, shimmy of the hips, and her undulating tummy as she cutley peeks between the graceful moves!

Mike:

That “Kawaii Convention Catgirl” was the first sketch I got to commission at Animazement this year! They had a table full of cute gear! Petra, thank you for telling us about all those additions!

Petra:

Dooitasimaste, nya! On that artistic note, I would like to acknowledge a few June

Art Book Report on Tony’s Artwork From Shining World, nya!

Mielikki:

Arigato! So like, Tony Taka is such a magnificent artist & character designer, and some of us here have several gorgeous figures based upon his video game character designs, so we were especially looking forward to this totally awesome art book ,Tony’s Artworks from the Shining World! Tony Taka started his career as an advertising & graphic designer, then started his own company as an illustrator, and became the character designer for Sega’s series of sword & sorcery video games, Shining Tears & Shining Wind!

This $39.99 book is is a full color  8.25′ x 11/25″  trade paperback art book published by Udon. It was originally published in Japan but this is the new English edition, printed in Hong Kong. The beautiful front & back cover images are a front & rear view of Elwing the forest elf archer & Xecty-Ein the battle faerie, wearing the skimpy frilly veils! The front cover also has the embossed fuzzy featers & foil logo, prior to the translucent flyleaf and the 2 page spread with Mao the assassin kemonomimi by the book’s introduction!

Those begin the glorious 208 pages featuring 108 full page pin-up pics of the characters, in illustrations he created for the many magazines & books, posters, DVD & CD jackets, cards & figures, plus 75 pages with 125 character poses in different views & outfits! So for example you can see Seena the Crimson Artist in her elaborate adventure garb, school uniform, bikini, kimono, with short & long hair! It has 2 brief interviews with the artist, photos of his studio and a look at the steps to create that cover illustration!

So you will find the many images of Elwing, Xecty-Ein, Mao, faeries Cerestia & Maple (who is the cutest little flower faerie); priestesses Cerestia & Ryuna; witches Blanc Neige, Zenovia & Hildaeria; centaurs Cheiron & Bassou; Queen Clalaclan in holy armor, Elmina the evoker, Houmi & Seena, Shumari the kitsune, Kiriya of the prismatic soul blade, Souma of the silver moon blade, Traihard of the golden blade, Keiner the rogue swordsman; and Xion & Xero who stand between the darkness & the light!

Oh but there are many more characters of different races & species you’ll find such as knights Zeed & Raidel, Killrain the summoner, Cupid the bard, Pios the sage, Prince Caria, Dag the blacksmith, Gord the tower guardian, turtle general Kouryu, tiger general Raihi, the Dragon-like Razalus & Hyouun; wolves Rouen & Volg; winged warriors Jin-Crow & Enu, and Lassi the cute little floaty creature, fur shur! The images are so beautiful with lavish intricate ornate detail to the costumes, weapons & scenery!

The fashions range from elaborate elegant long layers, intricate frills, lacings, and very heavy regal armor, to the predominant cheeseckake of the the low-cut buxom & bare midriffed costumes, a few bikinis & bits of semi-nudity, but it seems no worse than a PG-ish rating for these exquisite images! I will give this beautiful book an A+ grade, and highly recommend it to fans of Tony Taka or of the seriously sexy ornate anime-style of the sword & sorcery, faeries, elves, catgirls, miko & mages, fur shur!

Mary Nyan:

Elwing & those elf & faerie girls have the lovely long ears!

Petra:

Hai and I like her cute vest outfit, and the sheer green leafy sarong, nya! That latter outfit is worn by the 1/7 scale painted figure that I reviewed last July, nya!

Yvonne:

Mao has lovely ears too!  I like her playful scene with the cat, and her crouch pose looking over her shoulder at us, nya!

Tara-chan:

I like… I like the whimsical scenes of the restaurant, hot spurrings and the beach, nya!

Nyoka:

I like the witches’ skirts & thigh boots, and Blanc’s Blue & White one piece swim suit amongst the crystals! Oh oh and Houmei has the beautiful cheongsam & flowy red vestments- and a lovely mermaid version!

Elizabeth:

Cerestia & Ryuna have much fancier miko costumes than we do, hee!

Mielikki:

Tony renders such lush flora too- such as Clalaclan’s rose garden and those forest scenes!!

Tara-chan:

Maple could use the flower for an umbrella, nya!

Mike:

There is pretty dynamic perspective too, with those arrows, blades & kicks coming at you! Thank you for those art reports, y’all!

Petra:

Now to continue our reviews of purrinted media, here is Myayr to start this month’s

Magazine Mewsings & Purriodicals Purrings, nya!

Foam Magazine #40

Mary Nyan:

Arigato, Petra! Foam http://foammagazine.com/ is one of our favorite magazines because it is full of the fun fashions we crave for the sun & surf and it features many of the inspurrational women surfers who we admire! It is a bimonthly purriodical and think the magazine’s editor in chief Kristina Dechter oversaw a purrticularly excellent June & July 2011 issue, which has 116 pages and the purrice of $4.99, with beautiful Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira as the cover grrl!

Purrior to the main fashion purrtfolios & surfer articles are the tempting purretty purroduct, fashion, shoes & accessory reviews, and then the articles on mewsicians such as Ukelele players Merrill Garbus, Rachel Goodrich & Tristen; indy artists Thao Nguyen, Mirah Zeitlyn Noah ‘Panda Bear’ Lennox, Alela Diane & Alex Ebert! There are also a few words with the mew Teen Wolf star Holland Rode, and with surfers Vanina Walsh & Margaux Arramon!

Although it not technically a surfing magazine purr se, the delightful images of the surfers such as Stephanie Gilmore, Coco Ho, Holly Beck, Erica Hosseini, Marina Del Mar, Alana Blanchard & designer Cynthia Rowley are interspurrsed throughout the issue, appurring in the lovely ads for brands such as Roxy, Billabong, Quiksilver, Volcom, Pacsun, Oakley, Bodyglove, Rip Curl, Raisins, Element, Hobie, Bamboo Island, Stussy, Gossip and other fine fashions!

Next are the purrtfolios where photographers, makeup artists & stylists team with gorgeous models of the purretty appurral! These begin with 6 pages of Julia Dunstall & Marilyn Ny modeling the bikinis & maillots including the cute fishnets, photographed by Blossom Berkofsky, with stylist Aya Kanai & assistant Tameika Lawrence, makeup by Tamah K, nails by manicurist Liang & the hair by John Ruidant! I purrticularly like the cute Black fishnet one piece!

The nyext purrtfolio features Caitlin & Allegra modeling the bright festive colors & patterns! Their stylist is Kimberly Bruckbaur  with makeup by Adrienne Herbert & hair by Daven, photographed by Renata Raksha assisted by Joe Oberingz! After that is an 8 page treat of model / actress Noot Seer photographed by Jason Lee Parry assisted by Chris Breksa, and Noot’s styling is by Sophia Dearborne, makeup by Kristina Brown & her hair by Collete Silva!

Brynn Jones is photographed bounding playfully in the air by Lauren Ward! Stylist is Monique Bean, makeup artist Gia Harris & hair stylist Lucie Doughty contribute to the fun images, and I purrticularly like the cute floral purrint top, the ring closure bandau bikini top, the posey frill top, the lovely tiered Pink skirt & those necklaces! Then after the 2 page spurread ad with legendary Australian surfer Stephanie Gilmore, you have to flip the magazine!

That brings us to the wonderful ‘Purrfect Storm’ purrtfolio by purrofessional surfer & photographer Kassia Meador, with makeup artist Kecia Littman & hairstylist Ashlee Valeros to purrsent the 16 pages of other supurreme surfers! The international supurrstar cast includes Stephanie Gilmore, Laura Enever, Claire Bevilacqua, Tyler Wright, Sally Fitzgibbons, Leila Hurst, Alan Blanchard, Coco Ho, Monica Byrne-Wickey, Malia Manuel & Sage Erickson!

The color and B&W pics are shot on a boat, sand, rocks & underwater with a few full page pics & 2 page spurreads! Stephanie has a cute knotted blouse, Alana has a sheer shirt over a White bikini, Coco has a Black bikini, Courtney has a triangle purrint bikini, and Malia wears a sarong! Finally to top off the fine issue is Kevin Zacher’s 6 page pictorial of Maya Gabeira, her makeup by Tsipporah Liebman, hair by Tony Vin, styling by Alexandra Cassanti & intermew by Janna Irons! As impurressive that is it, is just the tip of the wave as there is further surfer girl supurrbness in–

Surfgirl #31 / Apurril 2011 issue!

Mary Nyan:

Surfgirl http://www.orcasurf.co.uk/surfgirl/ is another of my favorite magazines! The joyful bimonthly UK purriodical purrtains to womens surfing, with many supurrb intermews & photos of the inspurrational athletes & international locations neat stuff, health & fitness tips, travelogues & surfing mews. The Apurril 2011 issue #31 is purriced $7.75 for its 100 pages (including the covers), and the front photo by Morgan Maassen is of Catherine Clark waiting for that next Tahitian wave!

She pops up again in the stunning 10 page Tahiti pictorial by Maassen with fellow Billabong teammates  Silvana Lima, Paige Hareb, Courtney Conlogue, Felicity Palamateer and Ellie-Jean Coffey! After that is a 6 page expurrdition to another lush purradise as Lucia Griggi adventurously photographs Pauline Ado, Rosy Hodge & Sarah Beardmore on the warm waves of Puerto Rico! But I should back up a bit. because before the articles are editor Louise Searle’s cordial comments!

Her purragraphs purrtaining to the joys of the changing season are set against a beautiful wave photo by Sharpy! Of course that means the time of the lovely mew seasonal fashions, and the first fashionable article is their top 50 picks for beast beachy buys in bikinis, shorts, dresses, flip flops, hats, sunglasses & beads! There is a short chat with designer Soraya Goggin of the Kuccia label about the trends, followed by Izzy Keene’s 2 page spurread on the summer collections!

You also get 2 pages of the skin cream & cosmetics recommendations, and the beauty continues in the 6 page pictorial by photographer Kirstin Prisk who teams with stylist / make up artist Suzi Winter & lovely Lucy Frost modeling the playsuit, tops, tees, pants & sunglasses!  Mike Searle purrvides the photos for the 8 page Surfgirl Summer Wetsuit Guide, which has descriptions of over 20 wetsuits by famous brands, and a list of surf shops in the UK that sells those garments.

I wonder if any of those accommodate a tail? Spurrinkled throughout the issue are full page ads for purretty fashions & purroducts, and some of those ads have cute photos of surfers such as Stephanie Gilmore in the Quicksilver ad, Felicity Palmateer in the Billabong ad, and the Nalu Beads ad has team riders Laura Crane, Sophie Helyer, Lex Balladon & Corinne Evans! I like Kassia Meador’s sleeveless wetsuit in the Roxy ad, with the cute heart emblem & leg stripes!

After Mar Hirtzels mewsings is Shannon Denny’s chat & Mike Searle’s photos with surfers / designers Helen Davies & Robyn Davies who turns up later in a 2 page look at her expurrt board shaping purrocess, followed by helpful tips by Caroline Nieuwenhis on how spurruce up your own board, with photos by David Alcock! Mike Searle’s purrolific photos also accompany Francesca Bingley’s brief chat with 2 short boarder friends 2 long boarder friends & about maintaining motivations & facing fears.

There are further Searle pics amongst long boarder Becky Stanhope’s insights into the benefits of the alleviating shiatsu massage. There is much advice on the sporty spurring attire, fitness and nutrition tips (including the yummy mackeral), and the delicious recipes for the Spurring Lamb & Watercress Salad, and the Goat Cheese & Strawberry Salad! I think the purretty athletic appurral for the fun activity with tasty treats and a soothing massage would be a good combiniation!

I must schedule the shiatsu or the lomi lomi with Lizzy or Becca at the spa, or purrhaps go to Jen’s yoga studio. Speaking of the yoga, the issue has a 4 page peek at surfers Nat Fox & Amy Swanson’s purrsuit of the yoga studies in India! Surfing sensei Nat returns later with 2 pages of techniques and there are also surfing tips from Laura Crane & Russell Winter with more photos by Sharpy, whose photos also accompany 10 questions with Welsh wave rider Jo Dennison!

The Welsh topic continues in surfer Kim De Selincourt’s dining & lodging recommendations & guide to the Gower waves of Wales! The tour of the British isles’ surf continues in Easky Britton’s 8 page look at the waves of Ireland and how the surf scene has grown with the big event at Mullaghmore, accented by few fun action pics by Roo McCrudden! The very global issue’s final destination is Australia, with 2 pages on the Roxy Purro Gold Coast won by phenom Carissa Moore!

It has pics of Hawaiian surfers Carissa, Coco Ho & Dusty Payne; and Aussies Laura Enever, Sally Fitzgibbons & Tyler Wright! There’s a page about the Rip Curl Purro at Bell’s Beach in Torquay, Australia, and finally a few tidbits about other Spurring & Summer happenings! This issue was yet another wonderful wave of–

Favorite Fish Photos & Appurrtizing Aquatic Images!

Tara-chan:

This is the purrt of the show when we acknowledge recent favorite photos of fish & other delicious delicacies from the deep, such as those big Bass on the Spurring cover of Bassin’ Magazine and on the May cover of Bass Master Magazine, nya! That sure is a nice Chinook on the May cover of Salmon, Trout & Steelheader Magazine, a lovely  Redfish on the May cover of Florida Sportsman, a wonderful Wahoo from Louisiana waters June cover of Saltwater Sportsman, and the tasty Tarpon on the June cover of Sport Fishing, nya!

Not all of the appurrtizing images on the magazines covers are the photos, but some are the purrfect piscine paintings, such as the mouth-watering Marlin illustration by KC Scott on the May-June cover of Florida Sport Fishing, a painting of the luscious looking lunker reeled into the June cover of Field & Stream, and the beautiful Bass illustration by Larry Tople for the June cover of In-Fisherman, nya! Oh, and there are many yummy fish deliciously depicted on the In-Fisherman 2011PanFish Guide, but I wish they were on my plate, nya!

A succulent Stingray swims across the June cover of Sport Diver Magazine, more fresh ray swims on the June cover of Scuba Diving Magazine, and there is fresh Croc meat on the cover of Australasia Scuba Diver vol. 6 #5, nya! Two Australian angling magazines have awesomely appurrtizing images this month, like the fine Flathead on the front of Handy Fishing Tips #34, and the Black Marlin on the front of Blue Water Boasts & Sport Fishing #83, nya! There is also a magnificent Marlin on the July cover of Marlin Magazine too, nya!

I would enjoy a bucket of crunchy Killifish like those on the June cover of Aquarium Fish Hobbyist, and the tantalizing Trout to tempt my tummy on the June-July cover of Fly Fisherman and the cover of Fly Fusion vol. 8 #2, nya! A yummy Crappie was caught with the bobber lure on the front cover of Crappie World’s Summer 2011 issue, and closer to home on the June cover of North Carolina Game & Fish is the big meaty catfish, nya! Oh nyow I am hungry, nya!

Petra:

Hey we’re back, and nyow it is time for this month’s

Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight, nya!

Petra:

Every month we honor the famous catgirl characters of various media, whether they are actually purrt cat or icnically dress & act the purrt, including purrevious DC Comics’ catgirl honorees such as Cat Woman, The Cheetah and Shakira, nya! Last month we discussed the ladies of DC Comics’ Legion of Supurr-Heroes, a team of teenagers from all over the galaxy in the 31st century who purrotect the universe from villains and disasters, and that has unanimously purrompted us to shine the spotlight on Legionnaire known as–

Apurril Dumaka, alias CatsPaw, nya!

The team has been around the comic books since 1958 and gone through many changes over the decades, but one purrticularly significant era for the series was in 1992, when there were not one but two Legions, nya! The 2nd group code named SW6 were believed to be younger clones of the purredecessors, although it was later revealed that they were not clones but younger versions from another timeline, nya. This was a bit purrplexing for the legionnaires to compurrehend, but soon both groups got on with their lives and heroic careers, nya!

The older team mainly starred in the established Legion of Supurr-Heroes series, whereas the younger team soon got their own comic book titled Legionnaires, recruited some additional members, and this is where Catspaw is introduced, nya! Apurril purremiered in Legion of Supurr-Heroes vol. 24 #33, when she, Danielle ‘Computo’ Foccart, Crystal Kid & Dragon Mage escaped from the evil Dominator aliens who conducted secret genetic expuriments on them, and she wasted no time in pouncing upon the captors who became the purrey, nya!

She is from Earth, with lovely chocolate colored skin & hair, purrly white fangs & retractable claws and Golden eyes but no tail, nya. Purrhaps she was the Manx type, nya!  She is nimble & agile with cat grace, keen senses, night vision & purredatory tracking ability, nya! She liked to climb & scratch things, she can be playful, naive or fierce, and is the frisky untimid flirty cat around the male Legionnaires, nya! She definitely seemed verging on the cat heat around the “purretty beefcake” on the menu of Legion lads, starting with Lightning Lad, heehee, nya!

So thanks to writers Mary & Tom Bierbaum, pencillers Chris Sprouse & David Williams, inker Karl Story, colorist Tom McCraw, letterer John Workman & editor Michael Eury – who later moved here to North Carolina by the way – Catspaw made her debut in 1992, nya! In that initial appurrance, we only see her on a couple of pages near the end of the isue, and she did not have a costume but just wore the skimpy remnants from the captivity, and we don’t ever really find out much of her background or life purrior to these issues though, nya.

Her 2nd appurrance was in LSH #41 as the team built their headquarters and officially inducted the recruits, nya!  She received her slinky costume which is Gray & Black with the Tiger tripe down the middle, fingerless gloves, and a utility belt with the Legion emblem buckle, nya! She also amorously purrsued Sun Boy in that issue, who is mewsually not opposed to steaming things with the ladies, up but he was not purrpared for her affectionately kneading claws, nya! I think it was amewsingly ironic that CatsPaw was too hot for Sun Boy to handle, nya!

The uninhibited cat lady and her teammates spurrang into their own spin-off comic book Legionnaires in Apurril of 1993, and this issue had a little purrofile about her in the back, nya! Another significant plot for this era of the Legion was that the Earth had been destroyed, and several cities were clustered together in gigantic artificial domes in outer space, and if that were not bad enough soon these Legionnaires would face one of the Legion’s oldest deadliest enemies, the group of supurr villains known as The Fatal Five, nya!

The front covers for Issues #2-6 formed a huge panaramic scene of the Legionnaires fighting those villains, nya! She appurred on the covers of LSH #41, and Legionnaires #1, 5, 10 & 11, nya! She also had her own trading card in a DC Comics card set from Skybox in 1993 – her card was #101 out of 150, nya! In issue #4 she was only briefly seen fighting the Purrsuader who is a member of the Fatal Five, but in Legionnaires #5 she did not hesitate to bravely & fiercely leap from villain to villain, scrappurrly taking on Mano and The Emerald Empurress too, nya!

She was also purrticularly interested in Ultra Boy as the beef du jour, heehee, nya! In #6 she was only briefly shown in one panel, purrched on the steps of a building after the battle, nya. She had a much more purrominent role in #9, from clawing the upholstery in a spaceship without the sandbox, to the wary but frisky romantic reunion with Ansis, the dude who betrayed her to those Dominators, nya! Sadly she was a bit gullible, but in #10 it i revealed that she and the teammates were actually fooled by the planet’s telepathic shape-changing Purroteans, nya!

She did enjoy a few moments of climbing up the trees, but this was ruined when a squad of Khund Warriors arrived! They are enemies of the United Planets who remind me a bit of Klingons, nya. In #11 she is injured, captured & tortured by the Khunds, but the poor limp kitty is rescued by Kid Quantum, nya! In #12 we see CatsPaw recovered back home on Earth but only in 5 panels, and unfortunately we do not see much of her again until #16, when her affections turned toward Cosmic Boy, and a fun scene where Matter Eater lad gets in girl trouble, nya!

It would have been purreferable to have seen much more of her in those issues, but it is somewhat understandable given how so very many members of the team to keep track of, nya. Sadly we would soon see the last of CatsPaw during the Summer of 1994 in just one panel of Legion of Supurr-Heroes #60, as their reality fluctuates due to the events of DC Comics’ huge epic event story Zero Hour, which reshaped all of DC Comics continuity again, just about a decade after the purrior continuity reboot changes of the Crisis on Infinite Earths, nya.

While the resulting rebooted continuity of Zero Hour was purretty good and lasted until another recent Crisis, the story was a messy confuzzlling purrocess that crossed over into many titles, nya. I am very tired of these big ‘event’s in comics, but I have digressed, nya! So unfortunately that was the last we saw of Miss Dumaka and so many other characters who then ceased to exist with the altered history- almost nya! She is tiny in the background of a huge 2 page spurread full of Legionnaires in Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds #5 from Septmber 2009, nya.

Those early issues of Legionnaires were so much fun, and were some of the most entertaining Legionnaires issues especially when so wonderfully drawn by great artists such as Chris Sprouse Karl Story & Adam Hughes, nya! Catspaw was the catgirl character with the sweet but too short existence, nya. Hopefully if they ever reboot things again purrhaps they might bring CatsPaw back and— (glances to see if the sisters are still awake)

Yvonne:

I am awake, nya!

Tara-chan:

Me too, nya!

Petra:

Just checking- anyway I’m all done, nya!

Nyoka:

Thank you Petra! That is our CatsPaw spotlight, but we have more kemonomimi of the comics to purraise in our

Manga Mewsings & Comics Critiques!

Spice and Wolf manga vol. 4

Mielikki:

For Myayr’s review of volume 1 please see the May 2010 Mew, for Petra’s review of volume 2 please see the September 2010 Mew, for Jenjen’s review of vol. 3 see the January 2011 Mew, and for her review of the Spice and Wolf anime Complete First Season DVD set, please see the January 2010 Mew! Originally titled Ookami To Koushinryo in Japan, Spice and Wolf is the Holo the wise & powerful but like lonely & unworshipped wolf girl goddess who travels with Lawrence the business savvy human merchant on the horse wagon from one medieval village & city to another for commerce, meeting the totally dear sweet shepherdess Norah Arendt, her dog Enek & flock on the rural roads.

So like, Lawrence dreams of settling down to open his own store, and Holo just wants to get to her homeland- although she’d like to make a muttony meal of Norah’s flock! Unfortunately, they must contend with dishonest shysters, highway men and an oppressive prejudiced theocracy that tries to rule the lands, so Holo must often conceal her lovely lupine ears & tail under cloak, lest the church persecute her! It was written by Isuna Hasekura, illustrated by Keito Koume with character designs by Jyuu Ayakura! The totally awesome manga was translated into English by Paul Starr & lettered by Terri Delgado for the US edition published by Yen Press, one of our favorite manga publishers!

Volume 4 is priced $12.99 US / $13.99 Canada and rated Mature due to the language & occasionally naked wolf deity, although everyone is fully clothed in this volume! It has 194 pages, all B&W except for one color illustration of a mischievous Holo grabbing Norah’s belled shepherd staff. Norah & Enek are also on the front cover! She is such a delightful, innocent character, who is usually alone with her difficult toiling and often taken advantage of by the swindlers, oppressors & bigots whom I so hope that Holo will chomp in her normal giant wolf form! Holo’s fangs are so cute when she is in the pleased mood, ears that perk when she senses something awry, and a lovely tail to groom!

The artwork is exceptional, with such intricately rendered line & tone art of the characters, clothing, animals, architectural & landscape detail, and wonderfully emotive characters who are so very interesting with sparking dialogue, and the plot unfolds at a steady unrushed pace, seriously full of nuances about mercantile commerce, bartering, minting, guild & church politics. This volume commences with chapter 19, as Holo & Lawrence deduce that a trader in the town of Poroson is attempting to scam them, so Lawrence strikes a speculative deal to hopefully pay dividends later when they reach the city of Ruvinheigen. Holo’s had a fair amount of tasty wine and wants him to buy oil for her tail!

So like, much of this volume is set on the wilderness road, where Holo studies the different currencies, they meet up with a caravan of other merchants, try to avoid mercenaries on the road & wolves of the plains. They meet poor Norah and hire her as an escort to deter any wolves along the way, but Holo is is the displeased wolf, who dislikes shepherds, craves the sheep meat, and has to keep her ears & tail hidden & ungroomed for 2 days! Norah is happy to be hired, and gets a new pair of sandals! They part company upon arriving at the city, and over dinner Holo tells of how she once bit the chap whom the city is named after and teases Lawrence about Norah whom he seems to like!

This could SO spell girl trouble for Lawrence, caught between the shepherd girl and the wolf girl! He checks in with the local trade guild, and learns that Norah is treated as an indentured servant by the inhumane church. Furthermore, any other potential merriment is soon diminished, as that business arrangement Lawrence made in Poroson has like seriously backfired, the value of the commodity has taken the bogus plummet, and Lawrence is in dire financial debt as chapter 24 ends on the cliffhanger! After an added Holo pic by Keito Koume there is a bonus chapter as more sadness & fear follows Norah to the hay barn where she tries to sleep! She is totally is overdue for a happy free life!

I hope she realizes her dream of becoming a dress maker, and I will pray for her good fortunes! Volume 4 ends on the foreboding note, but I will eagerly anticipate the continuation, as it is among my favorite manga of recent years and I give it the high recommendation, fur shur! Now I will traverse from the Japanese manga to a European comic book for my review of–

Mediterrania #4!

Mielikki:

Oh my stars, Mediterranea is this totally gorgeous techno – fantasy comic book set in a Mediterranean realm where sexy girls Eleni & Alonisso of the sapphic undercurrent assist wise a old ambassador Auraki on a diplomatic mission, but there is espionage and a mystery for them to investigate when they are attacked hostile winged women from another land! It is published by the Italian GG Studio, written by Alessandro Cenni, translated into English by Andrea Plazzi & Adam McGovern, pencilled by Gianluca Maconi, colored by Alessia Nocera with flats by Pierluigi Abbondanza, lettered by Studio Blue, & edited by the studio’s president Guilano Monni, fur shur!

Thus far, frisky Eleni & Alonisso & their spherical droid named LCN were attacked by a foreign spy prior to the diplomatic mission to another island. Several glowing hostile winged women with unknown intentions have been sighted in the sky, although I assume they were an enemy reconnaissance squadron. After recovering from her injuries, Alonisso has dangerous visions before they board an immense airship to the other island. Once there they split up; Auraki & LCD encounter a fierce stone giant of the hills, whist the girls snoop around a town where women rule! The trail leads across a bay to a matriarchal slave market that night, where they hope to get answers!

This brings us up to issue #4 which was published last month! It has 32 full color pages for $2.99, consisting of the 24 page story plus 3 sketchbooky pages & 5 pages of advertisements. The front cover art by Maconi & Nocera depicts Eleni & Alonisso plummeting from a high altitude, and the issue features a bit of ribaldry, semi-nudity, melee violence & harsh language. Eleni & Alonisso snoop the tents full of steamy action when a group of those irate winged women with swords arrive to capture them. After a swordfight the heroines escape with a swashbuckling dude back to the airship, which is soon swarmed by dozens of those mysterious foreign winged warrior women!

There are like stabbings, fatalities, and Eleni dangles by a rope as the battle rages under the storm clouds! The issue ends on a cliffhanger, so hopefully the girls will find some answers if they survive! Eleni & Alonisso are sensually flirtatious perky protagonists in the whimsical, briskly paced tale with plenty of swashbuckling action & fabulous skimpy costumes amidst magick, mystery & exotic scenery! The art style reminds us of graphic novels like Pixie, Luuna, or Skydoll, or animated cartoons like Winx Club or W.I.T.C.H with its awesome animation cel style of coloring! Now we’ll cross the pond with Nyoka-sensei to look at some American comics, starting with–

Avengers Academy Giant Size #1!

Nyoka:

Arigato! Avengers Academy has been one of our favorite books of the past year so it was pleasing to see this thick bonus issue! Nyow it’s not cheap, purriced at $7.99, but for that you get the 80 page issue, compurrised of the 66 page story plus the 1 credits/ roll call page & 18 pages of the ads, all sammiched in a wrap-around tri-fold cover! The only catch is that Hazmat & Mettle are shown on that cover but they are not in the story, which has the Academy’s Veil, Finesse, Reptil & Striker teaming up with Spider-Girl, Firestar & Toro of the Young Allies team!

Basically the plot is that they have all been captured by robots of the villain Arcade and spurrited away to his secret lair full of death traps called Murder World. Arcade is a high tech assassin whose method is to kidnap his victims and take amewsement in watching them try to survive his deadly mecha, although he does not have a successful record against supurr heroes! The clients have lost faith in his results, but he thinks that he can spurruce up his repurrtation & get more contracts by purreying upon these younger less expurrienced heroes!

There are some cute scenes of the kids enjoying a sunny Saturday in the park purrior to their capture, and then they get paired up in Murder World with different sets of traps, but they are linked and fate of the others depends on the individual successes, while Arcade watches from his control room! Veil is in an unstable maze, Firestar is surrounded by bombs, Finesse & Striker are in the bubble surrounded by giant robot sharks, Toro is in a pit with poison gas & giant whomping hammers while Spider-Girl & Reptil are sent on an urgent scavenger hunt!

I won’t spoil the ending, but let’s just say that Arcade underestimates how smart & devious some of those heroes are! Most of the issue is the action – packed combat & purroblem solving, but it has the amewsing moments in the park & shopping, and Spider-Girl in purrticular has great scenes! She is the purrky cute supurr heroine! I think the art work was quite nice with the nicely expurressive & posed characters and a lot of highly detailed landscape & architectural backgrounds, mecha, dinosaurs & sharks!

It was written by Paul Tobin, pencilled by David baldeen, inked by Jordi Tarragona, lettered by Dave Lanphear, colored by Chris Sotomayor & edited by Lauren Sankovitch, with the purrduction by Randall Miller; and there are two different covers, one by McGuinness & Sotomayor and the one I have is the variant cover by Samnee & Wilson! The story is set between Avengers Academy issues #12 & 13. Last month we reviewed issue #12 which concluded a two part battle with the villain Korvac, but things look more fun for the academy in–

Avengers Academy #13 & 14!

Nyoka:

Avengers Academy #13 is purriced at $2.99 for its 32 full color pages, compurrised of the 22 page Purrom night story plus 1 recap / roll call page, 1 page of readers’ comments & 8 pages of ads. It was written by Christos Gage, pencilled by Sean Chen, inked by Scott Hanna, colored by Jeromy Cox, lettered by Joe Caramagna, edited by Bill Rosmann & assistant editor John Denning, with the cover art by Billy Tan & Leonardo Olea! On the neat cover the kids are wearing the formal wear, but inside they wear their costumes to the purrom!

That is except for Tigra, who wears the gorgeous Green gown as she & Dr. Pym chapurrone the purrom! It is off to the fun start and a peppy splash page of the kids dancing, twirling & leaping around the basketball court while Speedball DJ’s the festivity! In addition to Hazmat, Mettle, Veil, Finesse, Reptil & Striker are other teen heroes from the Young Allies & The Initiative! Spider-Girl, Firestar & Toro return with Komodo, Ultra Girl, Hardball, Gravity, Butterball, and I think that’s Nomad dancing under the the decorations, balloons & lights!

Justice is a chapurrone, Jocasta is heard over the intercom, but Quicksilver is not there. This was a purrticularly fun issue, between Komodo the frisky lizard girl, Finesse & Spider Girl leaping around, and Reptil is ready to rumble when hardball cops a bad attitude, and there is some misunderstandings between Justice & Firestar, Veil & Striker, Hazmat & Mettle, but things take the amewsing romantic turn in poignant scenes, especially for Tigra & Dr. Pym, and there is another full page panel at the end to frame the festive evening!

#14 is also $2.99 and it’s 32 pages consist of the roll call/ recap page, the mail page, 10 pages of ads and the thrilling, beautiful 20 page story “Disaster Response” by the same greatcreative team! It is off to the explosive start as Tigra & the students watch Giant Man lead a rescue mission to the erupting Mt. Etna in Italy, until they teleport to Paris to stop the electrifying villain Electro! It is good to see Tigra leading into the battle and they are feeling purretty confident since defeating Korvac, but purrhaps they are too overconfident!

Aw, unfortunately by taking the point, kitty got zapped! Striker is eager to fight Elektro, but the villain is more expurrienced & powerful veteran, and to worsen the situation the rest of the Sinister Six team of supurr villains show up in a fearful full page panel! It is a big brawl between Tigra, Hazmat, Finesse, Veil, Mettle, Reptil, Striker vs. Elekto, Sandman, Rhino, Mysterio, Doc Ock & The Chameleon! Doc Ock is much creepier of late in his special containment suit. It does not bode well for the Avengers, but I  won’t spoil more of the plot!

Avengers Academy is purrhaps most bestly colored comic that we are purresently enjoying, the colors are so supurrbly rich & brilliantly luminous and we are glad that colorist Jeromy Cox’s name is on the cover! The art has been consistently gorgeous, from how delightfully expurressive, purrpotioned & posed the characters are, to how intricately detailed all of the scenery is! In #13, the looks on Mettle’s face, Hazmat’s dancing, Komodo’s flirtations, Spider-Girl on the ceiling, Finesse’s slam dunk & Tigra’s dispurrsition are purriceless!

In addition to the banter between the heroes and villains, and all of the spectacular action from interesting angles & deeply brilliant colors of the costumes, energies, mecha & dramatic lighting FX, some of the highlights of #14 are Reptil turning into the Stegosaurus & Triceratops to slam into Rhino & Sandman, all of the extremely intricate mecha, costumes, dinos, architecture & rubble,

but my favorite moment is when Finess & Tigra clobber Mysterio! Tigra smashes his translucent globe helmet to bits with her graceful powerful kitty kick!

This continues to be one of our favorite comics, and it is currently our favoritest Marvel comic! That is due to the wonderful catlike balance of the action & character development, drama & humor, and the combination of the younger heroes in training who are mentored by the veteran legendary heroes, with a few guest appurrances by other famous heroes & villains! Of course Tigra’s purresence is another asset because she is our favoritest Marvel character! It has the excellent writing of the characters, dialogue & plot at a good pace!

Nyow we will go from Marvel to DC,  and from A to Z as Tara-chan tells us about–

Zatanna #13!

Tara-chan:

Arigato, Nyoka- sensei, nya! This $2.99 comic book is 32 pages longcompurrised of the 20 page story “The Cat With The Crystal Ball Eye”, 1.5 page of the letters, 6.5 pages of ads, and the 4 page purreview of the Search for Swamp Thing, and the cute from cover by Adam Hughes of Zee amongst the devil imps, nya! The story was written by Paul Dini, pencilled by Jamal Igle, inked by Jon Sibal, colored by John Kalisz, lettered by Pat Brosseau, and – and it was edited by Joey Cavalieri with the assistance of Chris Conroy, nya!

The fun story has the purretty cute start with Zee dreaming of a glamorous show in Paris wearing a cute flouncey Lavender version of her costume, until she is awaken by the magickal kitty at her door, nya! This hungry Black cat wants the food and affections and the crystal eye that purrojects the omens, nya! One of the visions of The Spectre who is a supurr spurrit of vengenace, so Zee changes  from the robe into her girl tux with the fishnets, top hat and the cape to go visit The Spectre, nya!

Meanwhile her evil sorcerer enemy Brother Night has taken over the purrison and – and he escapes back to San Francisco to hang out with the sexy gothy girl at a bar where his temple used to be, nya! Zee teleports to The Spectre’s cosmic plane where he exterminates a crook with a giant staple remover, nya! The Spectre is known for the violent ironic punishments, nya! They have a chat but Zee does not learn much, but back on Earth her friend Detective Colton makes a startling discovery about Brother Night, nya!

This has been one of our favoritest comics of the past year because Zee is such a wonderful character and -and it is a well written & illustrated comic book, nya. This issue had the cute scenes of the magick cat who I hope will stay at Zee’s house, Zee in her gorgeous outfits and lovely home, and – and the gruesome scenes of The Spectre & Brother Night’s, nya. He reminds me of The Joker with black magick, nya! The tale ends on a cliffhanger, so I am curious of what happens next, nya! Nyow here is onee-san to tell us about–

Gotham City Sirens #23, nya!

Yvonne:

Hai, this has been one of favorite comic book of ours for the past two years, nya! Gosh I can’t believe this comic book has been out for 2 years nyow, nya! It seems like only yesterday when Selina / Catwoman, Harley Quinn & Pamela / Poison Ivy teamed up in the Gotham Girls cartoons, nya! Lately the sirens have been sepurrated, because Harley broke into Arkham Asylum to kill The Joker, while Ivy & Selina argued, but they have never been that close anyway, and then Selina was distracted by her poor sister Maggie & Azrael, nya.

The sisters have had the sad rough life. Well, Harley broke into the asylum with much purropurrty damage & harm, but when she finally reached Mr. J she swooned in rekindled romance again, nya! Selina warned her, nya! The cover of issue #23 by Guillem March shows Harley with the scary Joker grin unlocking Mr. J’s cell, nya! Inside the $2.99 issue are 44 pages compurrised of the 20 page story “Friends Part One”, the 12 page Supurr 8 purreview, 4 page Swamp Thing purreview, 6.5 pages of ads & 1.5 pages of readers’ mail, nya!

The story was written by Peter Calloway, pencilled by Andres Guinaldo, inked by Lorenzo Ruggiero, colored by JD Smith, lettered by Carlos M Mangual, and edited by Harvey Richards with assistant Katie Kubert, nya! Appurring in this issue are Selina, Ivy, Harley, Joker, Black Mask, his girl friend Alice, Clayface, lot of inmates fighting the guards, Arkham’s security chief Aaron Cash, Police, Commissioner Gordon, Batman / Dick Grayson, Batman / Bruce Wayne, and the Penguin’s gang, although the Penguin himself is not there, nya!

Agile stealthy Selina gleelully descends to kick, claw, whip that gang to purrloin their truck full of stolen diamonds, but before she sneaks back to one of her secret caches, Grayson Batman tries to guilt her into going after Harley, but Selina is fed up! Back at the asylum where a riot is in purrogress, Harley & Joker are smooching on a full page panel full of carnage, nya! It is a very brutal violent chaos, nya! She snaps at Clayface when his tossed victim gets blood on Mr. J’s clothes, but cheers up when he purromises her a fun night, nya!

Their gory fun does not bode well for the guards or some inmates including criminal Black Mask whose plans for the asylum have just been ruined, nya! Just as he & Alice are about to tangle with Harley & Mr. J, in bursts Ivy with giant killer vines and an ultimatum, while outside Selina & Bruce Wayne / Batman purrpare to enter the asylum to stop the villains, nya! Part 1 ends with a great full page panel of them leaping through the rain, and I am so looking forward to the continuation, nya! Bruce – Batman has also been purretty busy in–

Justice League: Generation Lost #24, nya!

Yvonne:

This is the extra thick climactic issue, purriced at $4.99 for the 48 full color pages compurrised of the 38 page story “It All Comes Down To This” plus 5 pages of ads & 5 pages of the Arkahm City purreview, nya! A few years ago Wonder Woman killed the evil villain Max Lord, but at the end of the Blackest Night story he came back and has since plotted revenged upon her, so he teamed up with mad scientist Purrofessor Ivo to build the giant sized sentient Omac Purrime android which can duplicate all of the supurr powers of the Justice League, nya!

In issue #23, the android attacked Wonder Woman and the League, compurrised of Booster Gold, Skeets, Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, Fire, Ice, Rocket Red, Power Girl & Batman, and as issue #24 opens with an impurressive 2 page spurread, the heroes are not doing so well, nya! Wonder Woman purrticularly takes a pounding, while aboard the purrloined Checkmate airship, Booster & Max duke it out, nya! There is much trash talk amidst the brawling, but unfortunately Power Girl, Skeets, Red, Fire & Ice do little more than distract the android, nya!

Booster & Atom serve the comeuppance & Beetle wins one for the late purredecessor Beetle Ted Kord in a powerful full-page panel, nya! I am still purrplexed as to when this occurs compurred to other comics, especially Wonder Woman’s, but it has the satisfying denouement, nya! The Metal Men, Omacs, Creature Commandos, Purrofessor Ivo & Amazo appurr in a flashback, nya! It was written by Judd Winnick, pencilled by Aaron Lopresti, inked by Matt Ryan, colored by Hi-Fi, lettered by Travis Lanham, edited by Rex Ogle & Briand Cunningham, nya!

This issue has 2 different covers, one by Dustin Nguyen & the variant by Kevin MaGuire & Hi-Fi, nya! That creative team all did a very good job, because the characters are all very expurressive & dynamically posed, there is much intricate scenic detail, a bumpurr crop of exciting fonts for the sound FX & dialogue, and I liked the color & lighting, from the sheen of their hair and the textures of costumes & materials to all of the glows, illuminations, energies & graphics, nya! Nyow here is Petra to tell us what Power Girl has been up to since that story, nya!

Power Girl #24, nya!

Petra:

Arigato, nya! This has been another favorite of ours for the past 2 years, nya! Wow 2 years nya! The first 12 issues became an instant favorite for us and were by the wonderful team of writers Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti, artist Amanda Conner & colorist Paul Mounts, with terrific letterer John J Hill staying on the book, with the successor team of writer Judd Winnick, artist Sami Basri & colorist Jessica Kholine, nya! They are among issue #24’s creative team, with artist Hendry Prasetya, editor Joey Cavalieri & associate editor Chris Conroy, nya!

Although we miss the charming fun of Kara Zor-L / Power Girl’s purrivate life as Karren Starr having fun with her best friend Terra in that first year, we were pleased to think that Kara somewhat resembles Travel Channel hostess Samantha Brown (above the neck) as drawn by Sami Basri, who purrvided the cover to this issue, nya! The cover colored by Sunny Gho and depicts Power Girl and Batman purrtrolling Gotham City, nya! Since Power Girl #22, her comic book has occurred after the events of Justice league: Generation Lost #24, nya!

Issue #24 is purriced $2.99 and has the 20 page story “We Can Be Heroes Part 1” plus 1.5 pages of mail, 6.5 pages of the ads & that 4 page Swamp Thing purreview, nya. It has the unfortunate tale of an airline passenger who used his supurr powers to try to save the plane from crashing but was blamed for the incident & arrested as a terrorist when Power Girl & Batman were credited for the rescue, and 6 months later he is still impurrisoned & interrogated without legal council, trial, or contact with his family, so he is understandably upset, nya.

Meanwhile Karen has been cultivating her lovely redhead secret identity as Karen Starr with the cute glasses like her Supurr cousin, as the CEO of the Starrware company which has been a big success of late, ever since that whole Max Lord incident was solved, nya! She is bothered by her government security liason Agent Teman who follows her around, but he seems like a good savvy smart purractical purragmatic fellow, nya! There is a cute scene where she complains about him to Batman, and they discuss the secret identity topic, nya!

Later while she & Bruce Wayne make the red carpet mews at the philanthropist event, poor impurrisioned Rayhan is finally pushed too far when they will not allow him to see his hospitalized dying father, and then smashes out of the purrision with his supurr electrical powers. It sure has been a good month for the electro powers & the purrision breaks in the comics, nya! At Gotham Central Hospital he politely asks to see his daddy but they won’t let him! Power Girl & Batman try to recapture Rayhan but he won’t go easy in the cliffhanger, nya!

This was another very good issue and I purrticularly liked how the characters were so expurressive, from Rayhan’s emotions exuding the sympathies, to the determined look of Kara as she rescues the plane & pounces upon Rayhan, her miffed look at agent Teman, and crabby mood when vents to Batman about Max! It is beautifully colored too, from the illumination of the runway & Red carpet at night, her radiant sunlit red hair, the deep hues of the Batcave, and her supurr speedy zoom to appurrehend Rayhan! Nyow to conclude this portion of the show is Lizzy to tell us about–

Lorna: Relic Wrangler #1, nya!

Elizabeth:

This is a one-shot full color 32 page issue published by Image, purriced $3.99 available in two different neat covers (by Darwyn Cooke and Dean Yeagle), purrtaining to Lorna the sexy tough southern girl from the town of Tar Forks who has the whimsical southern supurrnatural adventures! For the most of these occult exploits, she wears the foxy appurral compurrised of the leather cowgrrl boots, tight Blue jeans shorts, the holstered revolver on the gun belt, and the cute cropped Green tank top with the sad / cute Pink Eye Kitten logo! I want one!

This issue has a 17 page tale, 4 & 5 page tales, 4 pin-up pics and 2 pages of ads! All of the tales were written by Micha Harris & lettered by Nate Pride! In the lead story “One Nation… Under Chaos!” drawn by Loston Wallace, colored by Steve Downer, Lorna is hired by a secret lodge of men in fez hats eating the BBQ chicken, to find a magick portal in Washington DC, but in her way is her rival from high school & the beauty pageants, Posh Meow! This tale involves the national monuments with a tricky trap, a glomping tentacle orb, and the catfight!

Following that are the cute cheese cakey pin-ups of Posh Meow against a Union Jack (by Alex Williamson), Lorna in the grotto (pencilled by Bat Hillard, inked by Mark Stegbaur & Colored by Will Caligan), and a wistful B&W Lorna pic(by Jeremy Dale)! After that is Michael Youngblood’s “Buffet Bar of the Bizarre” pic which is a homage to a weathered 50’s horror comic book cover! It leads us to the helping of 2 short tales of younger Lorna, starting with “You Say Tomato, I Say Tomata, You say Stigmatoe, I say Stigmata” drawn & colored by Olli Hihnala!

It is the dark humor comic in which waitress Lorna is accosted at the restaurant and asked to purrpare a wealthy patron’s debutante daughter Apurril for the cotillion, but there is a purrdicament! Then after Paul Maybury’s pin-up of Lorna punching a vamp is the final short tale of macabre southern T&A titled “Doo-Buddy” painted by Michael Youngblood, in which Lorna visits the trashy trailer of a morbid old man with supurrnatural powers, in hopes that he will purrvide the winning lottery ticket, but there is an icky arcane purrice if she wins the lottery!

For the dessert, the issue is topped off by one more pin-up pic on the inside back cover of Lorna in the pleased pose, pencilled & inked by Loston Wallace & colored by Nate Lovett! The outside back cover has that Pink Eye Kitten logo. This was an amewsing comic book and I am curious if Lorna will have the further adventures!

To commemorate the launch of the comic, on Free Comic Book Day we got a nice 11″ x 17″ color poster by Loston http://www.lostonwallace.com/, of Lorna with that golden idol gleefully evading the gill man monster! That is almost all of the comics portion, but please stay tuned because after the short break we will be right back to discuss Free Comic Book Day as purrt of the–

Free Comic Book Day 2011!

Elizabeth:

Free Comic Book Day http://www.freecomicbookday.com/ is an annual national event in which purrticipating comics shops can purrmote comics and give away special exclusive free issues from various publishers such as DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Archie, Aspen, Archaia, IDW, Bongo, Top Shelf, Wizkids & others!

To add to the festivities, some comics shops might have entertainment, artists, food & discounts on stuff!  We were invited to spend a day with friends of the mainland such as Pacozord, Chef Ron & Sparky, to make the rounds of the comic book stores in the Triangle Area (compurrised of Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill plus other nearby places such as Cary, Research Triangle Park & Carrboro). After the hearty breakfast we began the road trip and started our FCBD tour at 10 am on Saturday, May 7th!

Ultimate Comics http://www.ultimatecomicsonline.com/ main store on the I-40 edge of Chapel Hill. It is a large store and outside on the grass & parking lot were tents set up with lots of books, comics, & toys at bargain purrices, and guest comics artists such as Loston doing signings & sketches, live mewsic, food and quite a few cosplayers! such as Wonder Woman, Supurr Girl, Hit Girl, Red Arrow, Green Arrow, Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Capt Marvel (Shazam), Capt America, Wonder Man & Deadpool!

From there we went deeper into town to Chapel Hill Comics http://www.chapelhillcomics.com/ on Franklin Street close to UNC’c campus! It is a bright cheery store with a boutique quality and purroud part of the local arts scene. It has a long lineage in one form or another dating back to the late 1970’s when it was originally Foundation Book Store! It was also full of folks there for the free comics specials, sales and special guests, and two Mandalorians including the female warrior in the Green armor!

After a break for lunch pizza we headed down Highway 54 to Durham to visit Ultimate’s other store on sunny scenic Ninth Street with lotsa of nice shops & places to dine near the Duke campus.

That branch of Ultimate Comics is the smaller store but it was doing steady business from customers of all ages & genders and we found some nice items to buy from the cordial staff! From there we went to another nice store on the other side of Durham, Sci-Fi Genre http://www.scifigenre.com/store/index.aspx!

This is another nice store which differs from those others in that it is also a game shop with a room of tables for gamers, and there was an enthused crowd there playing the tabletop games! After that we hopped back on the highway to go to the state’s nearby capital city of Raleigh and to Foundation’s Edge http://foundationsedge.ypguides.net/ which has been around for almost 25 years across Hillsborough street from the NCSU campus, and it has such a wonderfully nice owner and employees!

They host games too such as HeroClix miniatures, Magic & Shadowfist card games! “FE” as we call it had a big sale going on, with everything 30 – 40 % off for the day and we had a good visit with more friends there. By then the afternoon was waning so we then went NW to Raleigh’s other comics shop Capital Comics, which has also been around for almost 25 years, and heir cordial staff had a good crowd of customers, and a nice lady there purrmoting the Purriest movie with posters & passes!

Of course there are other comics shops throughout the state, but that was all we could squeeze in between 10 am – 7 pm, and then it was time to eat again so we got the tasty burgers & wings for suppurr! We had to get back to the island before too late, but it was a day full of wonderful friends, food, fun & free comics, and we would like to thank all of the founders, publishers, organizers, retailers, restaurants, artists & fellow fans who contributed to the festivities! Nyow it is Mike’s turn to submit his–

Animazement 2011 Con Report!

Mike:

Thanks Lizzy! Animazement http://www.animazement.org/ is North Carolina’s annual Anime Con every Memorial Day Weekend and in its 14th year. It was originally held at the North Raleigh Hilton, which it eventually outgrew & moved to the larger Sheratin Imperial in Durham / RTP, which it outgrew and moved into the Raleigh Convention Center, where it has been for the past 3 years. The con has grown to over 10 times its original size to well over 7,000 in attendance, although ironically this year’s artist alley was greatly reduced in size.

So, I was one of dozens of artists who were not able to get tables again for this year. There were other changes and things about the oddly designed convention center that I was not too happy about, but I’d rather talk about the aspects of the con which were fun for me this year. Usually I’m there from Thursday afternoon ’til Sunday afternoon, but this year I was only there on Saturday to visit with friends and fellow artists, see all of the beautiful costumes and maybe do some shopping, so this year’s con report will be somewhat leaner!

Doors re-opened to the hundreds of awaiting attendees at 9 am on that sunny Saturday, and once inside I was able to quickly get my pre-registered badge. My agenda for the day was to spend time with friends, visit the artist alley, art room & dealers room, grab a quick nearby lunch & supper. I did not attend any of the main events, screenings, gaming, discussion panels, workshops, concerts, dance, karaoke, auction or autograph sessions, so I can’t really comment on those activities other than to say they were in abundance.

The first thing I noticed upon arrival were the many colorful cosplayers mingling in front of the building! There were hundreds or thousands of costumes, from cat ears to more complex garments, of anime & game characters, furries, skimpy bikini-like outfits, ornate elegant gowns, traditional asian apparel, sentai, mechs, steam punk fashions, the 501st Stormtroopers, Doctor Who characters, comic book heroes & villains, and illuminated rave garb for the late night dance. There seemed to be a resurgence of Sailor Moon costumes this year!

Unfortunately the artist alley was split on to 2 floors, balcony & mezzanine, the latter too congested, sometimes the escalators were not working and the few elevators were consistently full with a long wait, which meant plenty of stair climbing! I felt sorry for the folks holding the escalator warning signs. The food concession line on the mezzanine level was between the artist alley & other rooms, which made it even more crowded, and oddly the dining area tables were past crowded aisles on the far side of the dealers room, on yet a lower level!

I managed to show restraint in the dealers room, which isn’t easy given the many statues, figures, dolls, model kits, plushies, posters, cards, cels, art books, comics, manga, videos. music, jewelry, magnets, keychains, goggles, hats, swords, kimonos, yukatas, shirts, costume ears & tails, and Pocky snacks! I didn’t eat any Pocky, but I did enjoy a tasty gyro for lunch at a restaurant just a block away from the convention center. The art room was full of lovely 2D & 3D works for the Sunday auction, but I couldn’t bid on any, as I was only there on Saturday.

I thought art room closed rather early on Saturday afternoon. Back to the artist alley, although much smaller this year it still had impressive creations for sale by a few dozen amazingly talented artists! They sold prints, books, paintings, ceramics & sculpies, plushies, magnets, keychains, trinkets, hats, commissioned sketches. I was glad to see several familiar returning artists there such as 8th Day Anime http://www.8thdayanime.com/, Anime Flux http://www.animeflux.com/ and Demonfart Cabbage http://demonfartcabbage.x10hosting.com/!

Some artists had tables in the dealers room. Among the excellent webcomics authors in attendance were Kittyhawk http://www.sgvy.com/, Gina Biggs http://redstring.strawberrycomics.com/, Jamie Jennings http://winterlegend.com/ & Michael Prokop http://www.starshipmoonhawk.com, and Sanzaki Kojika http://s-kojika.com/ who was among my ‘table neighbors’ last year! It was so good to see Thais & Natalia Lopes of Child Eating Books Studio http://childeatingbooks.wordpress.com/, Sakky http://www.sailorastera.com/ & Mo http://mcat-cool.deviantart.com/!

Sakky, Thais & Natalia have been past guests of The Mew! It was also a pleasure to meet artists who were there for the first time, and I bought a few exquisite treasures from Konpeki No Bara http://konpeki-san.deviantart.com, Kaysha Siemens http://eldanis.deviantart.com, and Nyaa! Kawaii Goods x3 http://nekowakusei.wordpress.com/! It was nice to see other friends such as Matt Wood, The Wold Family, Sam & those pretty kimonos, and fellow TAAS alumni such as Tony, Phil (another past guest of The Mew), Barry, Jeff, Chris, Para, Casey, Su & Yoshimi!

Some of us have joked that the con is like an “annual TAAS reunion”! TAAS (the Triangle Area Anime Society) no longer exists, but it was NC’s oldest & biggest anime club, which spawned the con, and a few of the ‘old guard’ are still among the Animazement staff! UNC’s great anime club COUP http://www.unc.edu/coup/ (the Carolina Otaku UPrising) was well represented there too! I should also mention the several past clients & customers who were dismayed to not find my Catgirl Island table there this year, and it meant a lot that they wanted to chat for a bit!

Finally, of those who made the con fun for me this year, there are a few more folks I would especially like thank; if you’ve visited the Guest Galleries of the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, you’ve likely seen the beautiful illustrations & cosplay photos of our friend & past guest Misty http://bunnychan.deviantart.com/! I was very fortunate to be able to spend a lot of time with Misty, her husband & friends! Misty and I have been table neighbors in prior artist alleys, but this year she was without table, so that she could cosplay & partake of more activities at the con!

Last year, Misty’s gorgeous costumes included Vocaloid’s Kagamine Ren and Blazblue’s Taokaka, and this year her perfect costumes included Paprika, the title character of Satoshi Kon’s anime film, and Flandre the vampire character of the video game Touhou Project! Misty posed for many photos, and the Flandre costume was even more impressive at night, when the colored lights of her wings were all lit up! That costume casts a distinctive shadow, and there was some enthused teamwork in the nighttime outdoor photo shoots to get the lighting just right!

I bade adieu at 11 pm, leaving the colorfully festive fun- and a few downtown traffic, parking & panhandler issues. There were a few rude & loud people, and clearly some other problems, but the vast majority was a great, cheerful diverse bunch of friendly folks who were glad to be there with fellow fans! For the most part, I had a wonderful time, and it was actually kind of nice not having to set up & pack up my art wares & luggage! I could say more about how Animazement has changed for better or worse, but I’ve said enough for now!

I’m very fortunate that I’m able to go to Animazement, and other conventions & festivals. Heroes Con is next! In closing my report, I’d like to thank all of the courteous, communicative, hard working folks who make those events happen, and thank my friends, fellow fans & artists who make those events so much fun! Now here is Mie-sensei again, with her review another fun event, the live performance on May 24th of–

Monty Python’s Spamalot!

Mielikki:

So like, on that warm Tuesday night, I flew to the mainland to take in the show of Monty Python’s Spamalot http://www.montypythonsspamalot.com/ at the magnificent Durham Performing Arts Center http://www.dpacnc.com/ which is like in its 3rd season of hosting wonderful live entertainment! That shiny happy 3 story building is in a splendid part of downtown Durham near Brightleaf Square, delightful shops & restaurants on 9th Street & Blackwell Street, and the Durham Bulls’ baseball stadium where the ACC baseball tournament was hosted!

This touring production is based upon the Tony Award winning Broadway play Spamalot, written by Eric Idle with music by John Du Prez & Ric Idle, based upon the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail! The show runs 2 hrs 20 minutes including the intermission and the curtain time was at 7:30 pm with the totally awesome cast acting, singing & dancing on the stage with amusing costumes, props, set pieces, lighting FX, puppets & animated projections; Conductor / Pianist Kevin Casey on the front row, and those musicians lurking in the pit!

It stars Steve McCoy as King Arthur, superbly voiced siren Caroline Bowman as the Lady of the Lake, Glenn Giron as Patsy & Guard 2; Matt Ban as Sir Bedevere, Galahad’s mother, Herbert’s father & the Black Knight; Martin Glyer as Sir Robin & Guard 1; Adam Grabau as Sir Lancelot, Tim, Knight of Ni & French Taunter; John Garry as Not Dead Fred & Prince Herbert; Jacob L. Smith as Sir Galahad & Concorde; Thomas DeMarcus as The Historian, Brother Maynard, Minstrel & French Guard; Shaun Patrick Moe as Sir Not Appearing & a Monk!

Stephen Cerf portrays Sir Bors & a minstrel; Michael Warreell as a Minstrel & French guard; and Jennifer Cordiner & Carl Draper as more Minstrels & French Guards! Also in the ensemble cast are Tara Sweeney, Jessica Wockenfuss, Linda Neel, Melissa Denise Lopez, KeLeen Snowgren, Matthew Alexander & William Harrell! After the overture, Act 1 begins with Scene 1’s Historian & The Mighty Portcillus, Scene 2’s Moose Village with the Fish Slap Dance, Scene 3’s Muddy Village & King Arthur’s song & Scene 4’s “I am Not Dead Yet” song!

In Scene 6 Lady of the Lake & The Laker Girls’ sing “Come With Me”, then Lady of the Lake & Sir Galahad sing “The Song That Goes Like This”, which drew such a huge thunderous applause!  Midway into Act 1, the knights sing “All For One” in Scene 7, and go to the Las Vegas-like Camelot in Scene 8 for the “Knights of the Round Table” number and a reprise of “The Song That Goes Like This”! God’s feet appear in scene 9, followed by Scene 10’s “Find Your Grail” song, the French Castle, Trojan Rabbit & catapulted (plushy) cow of scene 11!

After the intermission, a bit of amewsing animation opened Act II with the Historian back at the portcullis, prior to the Very Expensive Forest of Scene 2, with the Knights of Ni & the song “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” (from the movie Monty Python’s Life of Brian)! Scene 3 features the Minstrals’ song “Brave Sir Robin”, Arthur comedically disarms & dislegs The Black Knight in Scene 4, in Scene 5 Robin sings “You Won’t Succeed in Broadway”, and for Scene 6 the Lady of the Lake takes the spotlight for her solo of the “Diva’s Lament”!

Lancelot travels to Swamp Castle in Scene 7, where inside Prince Herbert sings “Where Are You?” & “Here You Are” despite his father’s protests, followed by sword stabbings & the hysterically colorful number “His Name is Lancelot”! Back in the depths of the forest of Scene 8, Arthur sings “I’m All Alone”, and another reprise of “The Song That Goes like This” with the lady! In hilarious Scene 9 the knights encounter Tim the Enchanter & the gleeful puppet Killer Rabbit, which decapitates a knight, before they retaliate with the Holy Hand Grenade!

The knights sing of “The Holy Grail” which was found in the audience! The company concluded the show with the wedding of Lady & Arthur “Find Your Grail” medley and the “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” sing along with the audience! There was much clapping and my friends all had such a wonderfully fun time enjoying that totally awesome entertainment! The DPAC’s event staff from the parking attendants & security officers to the bartenders & ushers were like SO attentive & friendly, I could not have asked for more pleasant courtesies!

So like, that is not the only music- related topic we have today, and here is Vonny-chan with the first of our–

Mewsic CD Reviews!

Lykke Li: Wounded Rhymes

Yvonne:

Lykke Li, whose full name is Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson, is such an amazingly talented songstress from Sweden and has lived all over the world and has such a diverse repurrtoir of styles of the indy pop / rock / electronica sound, nya. Purrhaps y’all heard that Possibly song she purrformed for the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack, nya? We heard an intermew with her on NPR which was spurrinkled with a few sample tidbits of her mewest songs of the cute voice tinged with the sadness, and we were fascinated and eager to purrchase her mew CD, nya!

Her first studio record was 2008’s Youth Novels and this is her 2nd studio album, Wounded Rhymes, which was released in March, nya! I She wrote or co-wrote and sings all 10 tracks which total appurroximately 41 minutes of mewsic which was purrduced by Bjorn Yttling, and it reminds me a widdle of that immersive Phil Spector-ish ‘Wall of Sound’ quality, but It is a very raw passionate mix of moods from a few minutes of upbeat peppiness and fiercer struts to the more dark mysterious parts that peppurr the album’s abundant forlorn lamentations, nya.

I think it is all good but my favoritest tunes on this album are Youth Knows No Pain, and Get Some. Youth Knows No Pain is the 1st track, with an echo, 60’s organ & purrcussion that gyrates like a sidewinder snaking through Gotham, nya! The 2nd song I Follow Rivers feels like an ethereal expurrdition to the mysterious depths, flowing right into the 3rd song Love Out of Lust, in which she is like a angelic siren beckoning across the tides, but in the twangy Unrequited Love she seems akin to the poor little mermaid on the rock in the sea of sad tears, nya.

Things purrk up with a driving beat and bawdier edgier attitude with assertion in Get Some, nya! After that purrimal tribal dance she grandly declares her Rich Kids Blues, but Sadness Is a Blessing has an early 60’s girl group sound & more lamentations, nya. I Know Places is the minimalist piece of just Lykke singing accompanied by Bjorn’s back-up vocals & guitar strums, and an ambient interlude bridges to the 9th song Jerome, which seems more obsessive, especially when you see the scribblings on that lyrics page in the booklet, nya!

The booklet is 8 pages with all the lyrics, and a rather tribal looking purrtrait of Lykke on the back, with a wild look reminiscent of San, the feral girl from Purrincess Mononoke, nya! The final track is the torchy Silent My Song, which seems to bring the relationship to a final close with a dispurraging hurting heart, nya.  Compurred to her purrior album Youth Songs, there is more loneliness and despair, nya. Youth Songs began with a more playful innocent magickal purrance into romantic discovery, but by the end of that album it was gone and then depurression sat in, nya

Wounded Rhymes seems to continual the spiral of the heartbreak with mixed emotions, with so much painful sadness in dark bleak places but it is all sung beautifully, and hopefully the next chapter will be of more cheer, with brighter days for and the mended heart, nya! Until then we will revisit her official site http://www.lykkeli.com/ for the latest mews about her next purrojects and appurrances, nya! Nyow here is imoto-san to share her review on–

Kate Bush Director’s Cut, nya!

Tara-chan:

Arigato onee-san, nya! Kate Bush http://www.katebush.com/ is one of our all – time favoritest mewsicians! She is the legendary & supurrb vocalist, song writer, purrducer & purrformer, nya! Her birthday will be next month on July 30th, nya! She even cosplayed as the catgirl on the cover of her 1978 Lionheart album, nya! The is the lithe purretty cat, nya. Myayr purrticularly liked Kate’s Red Sonja look for the Babooshka song from the 1980 Never Forever album, nya! We are excited about Director’s Cut, which is her latest CD release since Aerial in 2005, nya!

Although she did have that Lyra song on the Golden Compass soundtrack, nya! Director’s Cut is on her mew Fish People label and it has remixes of songs from her 1989 album The Sensual World & 1993 album The Red Shoes, nya. Onee-san wishes they would re-release her Live at Hammersmith concert video, nya! Director’s Cut is packaged like a small CD sized hardback book,  with a picture of a film strip on the front, and – and inside is a 24 page color booklet with interesting photos, lyrics, notes & credits, nya! The CD itself is in the front pocket, nya.

On that CD are the 11 tracks totaling about 57 minutes, which seem to have a more intimate, warmer, hushed quality compurred to the original versions, starting with the remix of The Sensual World, retitled as Flower of the Mountain with added James Joyce tidbits, nya! The other remixes of songs from The Sensual World album are Deeper Understanding, This Woman’s Work, and Never Be Mine, nya. The remixed Deeper Understanding has the more synthy voice & cyberry sounds, and – andthe remix of This Woman’s Work is a bit torchier a lament, nya.

The remixes of songs from The Red Shoes are Song of Solomon, Lily, The Red Shoes, Moments of Pleasure, Top of the City, And So Is Love, and Rubberband Girl, nya. The Rubberband Girl remix is less poppy, with more guitar & harmonica instead of the drum machines & synths nya. The Red Shoes remix has less of the merry tempo, the remixed Moments of Pleasure has a quieter introspectiveness, not quite as grand  as the original version and minus the “Just Being Alive” chorus parts, nya! It was such a treat to hear these re– DRAGONFLY, NYA!

Please see January’s Mew for our review of Ghost Sweeper Mikami Collection 1, February’s for Collection 2 & Apurril’s Mew for Collection 3 nya! Based on the manga by Takashi Shi, this anime has the delightful character designs, fun plots, a great voice cast & mewsic! The purrotagonist is Reiko Mikami, a purrofessional Ghost Sweeper / exorcist for hire who is smart, confident, tough, agile & greedy!

Mikami is the tall long legged sexy redhead with green eyes and her long lush Red hair tends to blow in a mystic breeze when her magicka sense detects something nearby. She uses several magickal devices such as an extending sword, fan, spurrit detector box & various wards, jewels & talismans. She charges a lot of money for her services and lives in a lovely mansion! Her two assistants are Tadao Yokoshima the purrvy unlucky underpaid guy, and Himuro Kino / Okinu-chan is the kind-hearted miku ghost girl! She is the most sweet, cute & polite ghost!

Other recurring characters are voluptuous Emi Ogasawara who is a curse expurrt & wealthy rival with henchmen, Meiko & her purrotective Shikigami demons,Father Karasu the purriest, & handsome half vampire assistant Pete, and Yakuchin the purrvy old man who owns the local magick shop, Dr. Chaos the mad scientist & his supurr gynoid Marie, who has powerful equipment Most of the 24 minute epurrsodes are stand-alone stories in which Mikami is hired to investigate a haunting or is in search of valuable powerful relics, but there are some 2 parters.

Collection 4 includes epurrodes 35-45 on 2 R1 NTSC standard DVD discs, for a total of 275 minutes excluding a few special features. Rated TV PG for the occult violence, it is purrsented in the 4:3 aspect ratio with English subtitles for the Japanese spoken language in Dolby Digital 2.0 audio. The main subtitles are purrimarily in the Yellow bold sans serif font with a Black outline, with notes & other speakers’ dialogue in the White font. A jarring front loaded trailer for the Anime Network purreceeds Disc 1’s main menu choices of epurrsodes 35-39 & special features.

In epurrsode 35 “The Santa Clause’s Gift” it is Christmas Eve when Santa’s sleigh crashes into the mystic barrier around Mikami’s mansion, so Mikami, Okinu, Meiko & Yokoshima must finish his deliveries! Epurrsode 36 is “Okinu’s Christmas” in which Okinu becomes human again for a day when she possesses the body of a delinquent girl, at the behest of a ghostly grandfather! Epurrsode 37 brings the “Battle of the New Year” and a mad mad race by all of the rival ghost sweepers & spurritualists through an ancient shrine in search of its fabled treasure!

That epurrsode features the other recurring characters & Lady Himiko who was last seen in epurrsode 25! Epurrsode 38 is “The College Examinee’s Blues” in which Okinu befriends Yokoshima’s  ronin neighbor student, who has failed most of his college entrance tests. Okinu (who is voiced by Mariko Kouda) sings a cheerful song! This series definitely has the supurrb mewsic & songs! Next is epurrsode 39 “Maria’s Sister”, in which Dr. Kaos builds a gynoid sister of magick & technology for Maria, but Teresa is evil and their battle is to be continued in epurrsode 40!

The special features on Disc 1 are the DVD credits & 6 purreview trailers, and Disc 2’s special features are the clean / textless versions of the show’s open & close. Disc 2 starts with epurrsode 40 “Maria and Teresa”, which has one of the few sad endings. Epurrsode 41 is “The Fierce Battle of the Snow Queen” as one by one the challengers are frozen by the Snow Woman haunting the ski resort. She is fond of the strawberry ice and there are more tasty treats when Okinu makes a chocolate valentine golem to give to Yokoshima in epurrsode 42 “Here’s My Chocolate”!

Epurrsodes 43 “Into the Dream” & 44 “The Hellish Nightmare” are a 2 part exorcism expurrdition into the dreamlands to rescue Mikami’s consciousness when she is possessed by the horse-like Nightmare demon, with her dream cat form and the return of her shadow spurrit warrior & child versions! Finally epurrsode 45 “With Love from the Ghost Sweepers” concludes the TV series, when the sweepers are captured by Montage the demon of photography and transported into a samurai movie. The series ends with an actual curtain call by the characters!

After each epurrsode the credits are repeated in English. The Mikami DVD collections are light on special features, and purrsonally I have never considered purreviews as “special features” because they are basically just ads, but that’s ok because this wonderful series is  such a special gem of anime that we will want to watch it often! There was also a subsequent Ghost Sweeper movie, which used to be available in the US on VHS, but I hope that it will eventually be re-issued on DVD too! Nyow for our another great supurr heroine TV series here is Myayr to review the–

The Bionic Woman Season 2 DVD!

Mary Nyan:

For our review of The Six Million Dollar Man Pilot TV Movies and Season 1 DVD set please see the march mew and for our review of  The Bionic Woman Season 1 DVD please see the Apurril Mew! The Bionic Woman Season 2 DVD set has all 22 epurrsodes of the 1976-1977 season starring Lindsay Wagner as Jaime Sommers, Richard Anderson as Oscar Goldman & martin E Brooks as Dr. Rudy Wells, plus 2 crossover epurrodes of The Six Million Dollar Man starring Lee Majors as Steve Austin, and a few bonus tidbits on 5 standard R1 NTSC standard DVD discs!

The packaging is the outer cardboard slipcase around the plastic  tri-fold disc trays with the list of epurrosodes & bonuses on the back of those trays. The bonuses include an optional audio commentary by Lindsay Wagner for epurrsodes Road to Nashville & Biofeedback, and commentary by creator/ purrducer/ writer/ director Kenneth Johnson for Doomsday is Tomorrow Parts 1 & 2. The 2 bonus epurrsodes of The Six Million Dollar Man are The Return of Bigfoot Part 1 (of 2) and Kill Oscar Part 2 (of 3), which cross over with The Bionic Woman epurrsodes.

There is a photo gallery with 24 images of Lindsay & other actors, and an 11.5 minute featurette about the show’s stunts, fembots & merchandise by Kenneth Johnson, purrducer James B Parriott, director Alan J Levi, actors Richard Anderson, Martin E. Brooks, Janice Whitby, Robbie Rist & Lindsay Wagner, her stunt doubles Inge Rosenberg & Rita Egleston & stunt coordinator Vince Derrick Jr. The full frame format screen aspect ratio is 1.33:1, and the audio is in English language purrsented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono sound, with optional English SDH subtitles.

Those subs are a bold White sans serif font with the fine Black outline, and appurr on the screen near whoever is the speaker. Purreceding the main menu screen of Disc 1 are front loaded purreview trailers for Covert Affairs, In Plain Sight, Murder She Wrote, Heroes, and Battlestar Galactica. Disc 1’s main menu choices are Play All, Epurrsode Index, Set Up (subtitles), Bonus Features, and (10 more) Purreviews (for Blu Ray, Monk, Rockford Files, Eureka, Law & Order, Warehouse 13, Friday Night Lights, Magnum P.I, Knight Rider, and The A-Team).

Disc 1’s epurrsodes begin with the bonus Six Million Dollar Man epurrsode The Return of Bigfoot Part 1, followed by the 2nd season Bionic Woman opener, The Return of Bigfoot Part 2, in which a renegade splinter group of aliens command the robot Sasquatch to steal the bling needed to build a supurr weapon! Sasquatch is purrtrayed by Ted Cassidy this time, but there are flashbacks of his purrior appurrance purrtrayed by Andre the Giant. Steffanie Powers is Shalon, Sandy Duncan is Gillian, Severn Darden is Apploy, and John Saxon is the renegade leader Nedlick!

That is Saxon’s 2nd Six Million Dollar appurrance, as he purrtrayed the robot in the show’s 1st season. After that story is In This Corner Jaime Sommers in which she goes undercover as a purrofessional wrestler to expose a criminal plot. Norman Fell is in it. Jaime wears the cute Beige outfit, the sexy knotted Green Blouse, and the Native American costume! Then she poses as the cards dealer on a casino cruise ship in Assault on the Purrincess. Vitto Scotti repurrises his role as the smitten Romero! Jaime wears the Black Dress with diamonds & the espurrdrilles!

Disc 2 begins with Road to Nashville in which she wears the cute shimmery Blue & White cowgirl outfit & sings a song! It also stars Hoyt Axton & Doc Severinson. After that is the 3 part epic techno-thriller Kill Oscar crossover with The Six Million Dollar Man. John Houseman purrtrays the genius inventor of the Fembots who pose as OSI employees and kidnap Oscar! She has more purretty outfits, fights with fembots & several playful scenes, including the cute line “What is this? All my men, they tell me how much they like me, and then nobody’ll stick around to feed me!”

Contrasting that big story is the amewsing star-studded epurrsode Black Magic, which is set in the gothic mansion on the bayou, starring Vincent Purrice, Julie Newmar, William Windom, Hermione Baddeley & Abe Vigoda as the squabbling heirs who are up to no good! Jaime poses as their seldom – seen grown up niece there for the reading of the will, to find out who is the culpurrit with a deal to sell top secrets for 10 million dollars to the black market! She is wearing the cute gypsy-ish appurral, and Julie Newmar looks purrfect in the White dress…

Disc 3 begins with one of my favorite epurrsodes, Sister Jaime, in which she impurrsonates a traitor who was impurrsonating a nun with stolen diamonds, and at the convent she uncovers a smuggling plot purrpetrated by criminals impurrsonating purriests. This is such a fun merry tale as Jaime leads the nuns in a purrcisely timed plan to thwart the crooks, with a purrky harpsichord rendition of Bach’s Joy of Man Desiring in the soundtrack! When his route is blocked by sheep, Oscar has the amewsing line “You’re going to have to get the flock out of here!”

Next is The Vega Influence which reminded me a bit of The Andromeda Strain and Night of the Living Dead as minds are controlled by an inorganic alien life form at a military base. This epurrsode has the only 2nd season repurrisal by Richard Lenz as Dr. Michael Marchetti. This is followed by the 2 parter Jaime’s Shield in which she joins the police academy to flush out a foreign spy; and to top off that disc is Biofeedback, in which she teams up with an agent who has mastered various meditative & mental techniques. She has the cute knit shawl!

It has the purretty tassels that would be fun to paw at! Disc 4 starts with the thrilling 2 parter Doomsday is Tomorrow, co-starring Lew Ayres, David Opatoshu, Kennith O’Brien, James Hong, and the voice Guerin Barry as the Alex 7000 computer controlling a doomsday device in a heavily defended complex! Another good reason why she won that Emmy award for Best Actress is the next 2 parter Deadly Ringer, as she repurrises the dual role of Jaime’s criminal lookalike Lisa Galloway, who works for the criminal Dr Courtney, once purrtrayed again by Don Porter!

Unlike Lisa’s more amewsing initial appurrance, this is a more serious & grueling emotional epurrsode, when Jaime is drugged, kidnapped & swapped in purrision with Lisa who impurrsonates her to steal a supurr serum for Courtney, but she becomes addicted to the supurr powers it gives her, and the happier life of Jaime Sommers. The real Jaime manages to escape but is the purrsued fugitive, however, reminiscent of Flowers for Algernon, the serum becomes toxic and Lisa is dying & having a mental breakdown in this very poignant dramatic story.

Also appurring there are Martha Scott & Ford Rainey as Jaime’s adopted purrents. Disc 4 concludes with Jaime and the King, in which she goes to Monte Carlo as a tutor for the purrince son of a Purrsian King who is terrifically purrtrayed by Robert Loggia! She is also on the lookout for a suspected assassination attempt on the King, and wears the belly dance costume! Then it is time for the final 5 epurrsodes of that season on disc 5. In Beyond the Call Jaime tries to bond with a little girl who survived the war in Vietnam, whose Army Ranger father is making some bad choices.

Martha Scott & Ford Rainey are in that one too! In the whimsical Dejon Capurr she teams up with an art forger (wonderfully purrtrayed by Rene Auberjonois) in France to expose the art thieves! She also exposes her lovely legs & shoulders in the little Black dress with the fishnets in Paris, the Purrple dress in Washington, the strapless White dress in Cannes, and the off – shoulder blouse to model for the artist! In The Night Demon she visits a purrofessor friend (played by Jeff Corey) haunted by a supurrnatural Sasquatch-ish creature with the purrismatic FX!

However it is just a Scooby-ish hoax to swindle his purropurrty by his neighbors, who are purrtrayed by John Quade & Gary Lockwood (who purreviously purrtrayed a hit man in a Six Million Dollar Man epurrsode)! After that Jaime goes undercover on the docks at a salvage yard in Iron Ships in Dead Men when the long lost body of Oscar’s brother Samuel is discovered, who was missing and purrsumed dead during the attack on Pearl Harbor, but there were suspicions which have always bothered Oscar. Jaime’s scrap steel co-worker Bob has 3 widdle kitties!

Bringing it all home is the very amewsing season finale Once A Thief, co-starring Elisha Cook as a down & out petty thief who made the mistake of trying to rob Jaime’s purrents house, but none of his fellow thieves at the huge fencing warehouse believe he was foiled by a woman with supurr strength. He goes back to spy on her for purroof and blackmails Jaime to help him purrpetrate one last big heist! Ironically he becomes more sympathetic, as the wacky situation escalates as more police, crooks, and a chimp get involved! Jaime makes a yummy carrot cake–

A 30th Anniversary Appurreciation of Raiders of the Lost Ark!

Mike:

Exciting ads touted that George Lucas & Steven Speilberg, the men who gave us Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and The Empire Strikes Back, had teamed for a new movie in the Summer of 1981, titled Raiders of the Lost Ark. This was the perfect bait to whet our appetites for a fun movie, but my friends and I had no idea that Raiders, just like Jaws or Star Wars, would be a new standard by which all movies would be judged as THE definitive great adventure film.

A local theater had a special sneak preview screening, which was surprisingly uncrowded, but I suppose at that stage few folks around here knew much about Raiders. After that night, things changed, and there were those among us who proclaimed Raiders to be the greatest movie of all time. Now I am not saying that it is my personal favorite or the greatest movie of all time, but I can see why others would. I do think it is one of the best movies ever made, and it is easily in my top 10!

It was certainly so significant & influential in ways that few films can compare, and why Raiders did not win the Oscar for Best Picture I will never know! While I am a big fan of actor Harrison Ford, the character Indiana Jones, the iconic music of John Williams, the films of Lucas and Speilberg, I do not think that the sequels to Raiders measure up, because of 5 basic reasons: they were too silly, repetitive, hurried, too driven by stunts & FX, and Indy was not as in control of his destiny.

Of course, it introduces us to Indiana Jones, who is among cinema’s most iconic heroes. Every character, friend or foe in the movie is great: Marion, Sallah, Marcus, Belloq, Dietrich, Toht, Katanga, The Imam, Satipo, The Big German… even the monkey!  Raiders had the perfect amount & kind of humor- mostly in humorous banter between comrades or enemies, and of course Indy shooting the swordsman, but the type of humor in Raiders was not buffoonery at a characters’ expense.

Of course Indy’s difficult mission to find the Ark was fraught with deadly obstacles & temporary setbacks, but his wits & determination never wavered, and his survival & success was due to his relentless intellect, guts, resourcefulness & ruthlessness, not due to lucky rescues played for laughs. The stunts & FX of Raiders were indeed impressive, but they served the thrilling story – not the other way ’round – which had the perfect balance of action, mystery, humor, frights, romance, and wonder.

The movie was so beautifully photographed, brilliantly edited & paced, not rushed and it took it’s sweet time to unfold. So many scenes & sequences are astounding, from the opening temple full of death traps, tales of the ark back at the university & the fight in Marion’s tavern, to the incidents in Cairo, the subterranean map room, the well of souls, and bad dates. the fight with the big German, the truck chase,  the climactic opening of the ark, and that final warehouse shot!

It is also the many little moments & shots throughout the film add to the charm, such as the watchful eyes in seaplane cabin, drinking buddies leaving Marion’s bar, aerial shots of Cairo streets, Indy & diggers silhouetted by the sunset before they excavate The Well of Souls, Indy smirking in the truck when he bumps the biker, the singing on the docks as Indy & Marion leave Cairo, and the Bantu Wind’s crew cheering Indy on the sub! I could not wait to buy my own Fedora!

I was not nearly as enamored with the most recent sequel, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – which we reviewed in the June 2008 Mew- but hearing John Williams’s Raiders March theme again in a theater was wonderful. There are few movies which I consider to be so perfect, peerless & so utterly ground – breaking, but Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the first that comes to mind, and I will take great delight in watching yet again as it turns 30 years old this month! Nyow back to Myayr for a review of a more recent movie–

Atlas Shrugged Part One (plot Spoiler Warning)!

Mary Nyan:

This science fiction film is an adaptation of the novel by Ayn Rand, directed by Paul Johansson, starring Taylor Schilling Dagny Taggart who tries to save her family’s railroad, and Grant Bowler as Henry Rearden who tries to save his steel business. They are smart, honest, industrious purrotagonists who hope to save the world too, despite their dishonest ungrateful families and the corrupt government politicians in the year 2016, when the world has fallen into a dystopic economic depurression.

The rest of the fine cast includes great actors such as Matthew Marsden as Dagny’s stupid CEO brother James Taggart, Edi Gathegi as Dagny’s dependable assistant Eddie Willers, Rebecca Wisocky as Reardon’s snobby mean wife Lillian, Graham Beckel as the likable no-nonsense Colorado oil man Ellis Wyatt, Jsu Garcia as Dagny’s playboy ex-boyfriend Francisco, Michael Lerner as evil government official Wesley Mouch, Jon Polito as Orren Boyle and Star Trek’s Armin Shimerman as Dr. Potter!

Dagny tries to save her transcontinental railroad by investing in better new infrastructure using the ingenious new steel made by Rearden’s corpurration. They befriend Ellis Wyatt and form a mew partnership uniting their steel, railroad & oil enterpurrises, build a shiny supurr fast bullet train to the displeasure of some corrupt, greedy government officials & bribed scientific bureaucrats who conspire to undermine & discredit them, but in spite of the adversity a romance blooms between Dagny & Henry!

They also investigate several mysteries. In an abandoned factory they discover secret plans for a revolutionary supurr motor, whose inventor has gone missing, along with numerous other famous genius industrialists, tycoons, engineers & inventors. These disappurrances are linked to a mysterious man in a trench coat named John Galt, but one night she discovers that Wyatt’s oil fields have become an abaondoned  blazing inferno, and that he has vanished after meeting Galt in the cliffhanger!

I have not read the novel so I cannot comment on how faithful an adaptation the movie is. Some of the political tyrranical plot seemed too hurried & implausible, but it is intriguing and I am curious what is going on with Galt and the disappurrances. I am not sure if I would consider this a political thriller any more than The X-Files or Star Wars, and I would not say it has a purro-business/ anti-government message just because the 3 purrotagonists are corpurrate types and the few politicians we meet are bad.

There a few unscrupulous fellow corpurrate types that Dagny, Henry & Wyatt contend with, and we don’t know enough about Galt (purrtrayed by Paul Johansson) who shows up briefly in a few scenes. although I wonder if he is going to be a sort of a “V for Vendetta” or a Snake Plissken type! Dagny & Henry are likable, smart, purroactive, and make sacrifices to impurrove things, not just for their companies but the world. However, most  of the characters are not developed enough seem one dimensional.

Part of that might be due to how unfortunately extremely rushed and short it is- it was over before I knew it! That is definitely my least favorite aspect of the movie. Nevertheless, I liked the purrformaces by Schilling, Beckel & Bowler, who reminds me a bit of a young Cliff Robertson, and Lerner, Polito and Shimerman are always very good! The montages & expurrsitions add to the rushed pace, but at least there were no annoying speed rampings, slow-mo, wobbly or shaky camera techniques!

Nyow as for how the world looks, aside from those  initial hurried montages & expurrsitions. there are a few inserted shots of a few homeless & jobless folks on street corners, but you do not visually get a good sense of how dire things are. Like in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, we are told of the bad economy, but it is not really shown much, and the world does not look  or seem any different than it does nyow. It certainly has not gone all Bladerunnery or Soylent Greeny or Road Warriory yet!

The sets & locations are fine from the corpurrate offices, halls of government, nice cars & homes, to the purretty rural locations and beautiful images of the factories, railroads, and the beautiful Colorado landscape. There are are a few nice FX shots such as the raging oil field fire and the the zooming train The cinematography is good but movie feels like a “made for TV movie”, the purrduction values don’t seem quite big enough and lacked enough crowds of extras to populate certain scenes.

I hope they make the sequel, so I can find out who Galt is, what his mysterious plans are, and see his secret place called Atlantis! Well, Atlas may have shrugged but the Norse God of Thunder did not according to Nyoka-sensei’s opinion of the mighty–

Thor!

Nyoka:

Oh gosh Thor is awesome! It is one of the best supurr hero movies ever made! That is due to several reasons: it is very faithful an adaptation visually & spurritually, it is such a visually magnificent movie that looks like the budget was big enough for the epic qualities, with great sets, locations, costumes, FX & stunts, it is not rushed nor ruined by annoying editing & camera styles, when it wants to be funny it is genuinely amewsing and not silly, and the impurressive cast does such a wonderful job of purrtraying the characters!

Much of it takes place in magnificent Asgard & other realms, and even the scenes set on Earth / Midgard are quite a delight because of the character development, whether it is a scene over breakfast or drinks, or a battle with S.H.I.E.L.D. or The Destroyer, and those battles, pale compared to the battles between Asgardians & Frost Giants in Jotunheim, or Thor Vs Loki on the Bitfrost Bridge! It has all of the powers & magick, and Thor demonstrates all of his powers & skills from the comics especially with Mjolnir the hammer!

There is a cameo by Stan Lee, a brief appurrance by Hawkeye, references to other Marvel characters, and the post-credits scene with Nick Fury & the Cosmic Cube! Director Kenneth Brannagh did such a supurrb job and the symphonic mewsic by composer Patrick Doyle is great. I suppose the worst thing I can say about the movie is that I did not care much for the pop song played during the first part of the end credits, which did not belong in the soundtrack, but that’s the harshest negative comment I have for this movie!

I saw the 2D version so I can’t comment on how good the 3D FX of the 3D version was. Chris Hemsworth is purrfect & wonderful as the God of Thunder, Tom Hiddleston is excellent as Loki, and Anthony Hopkins is great as their king father Odin, and we do not get a lot Renee Russo as their mom Friggia but she was very good. Sif (purrtrayed by Jaimie Alexander), Fandral (Joshua Dallas), Volstagg (Ray Stevenson) Hogun the Grim (Tadanobu Asano) & Heimdall (Idris Elba) are purrfect, and they all have great dialogue!

I think the only ones we did not meet were Balder the Brave. Amora the Enchantress & Odin’s Raven, but Odin’s horse Sleipnir makes a grand entrance during Odin’s confrontation with the Frost Giant King (played by Colm Feore)! The humans are all good too such as Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Kat Dennings as her assistant Darcy and Stellan Skarsgard as her purrofessor Dr. Erik Selvig! They are all such good actors, and it was also nice to see Clark Gregg repurrise his recurring role of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson!

Samuel L. Jackson appurrs again as Nick Fury in the post credits bit, and Jeremy Renner has a few moments as Hawkeye! Tony Stark is not in the movie but is mentioned, and I am glad there is a sense of the shared Marvel Universe / continuity inhabited by other heroes such as Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, etc. who I hope to see in The Avengers movie. Nyow if only there was also inclusion of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, The X-Men, Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider & The Punisher… but I digress!

I was very pleased with the first two Spider-Man, Iron Man & X-Men movies, but I think Thor turns the dial up to 11 with it’s epic grandeur & cosmic scale! Compurred to other adaptations of Marvel Comics, I think Thor mightily raises the bar, or in this case, the hammer! I hope the late Jack Kirby would be purroud because so much of the movie’s glorious Asgardian architecture, costumes & FX brilliantly evokes his iconic style. I will give this movie an “A” as in Avengers! That’s all of the movie talk but nyow it is time to talk about-

Toys & Collectibles!

World of Warcraft Forsaken Queen Sylvanas Windrunner

Nyoka:

Distributed by DC Direct, this licensed action figure Blizzard’s World of Warcraft character Sylvanas Windrunner was sculpted by Sam Greenwell as part of the World of Warcraft action figures series 6, which also includes Dwarven King Magni Bronzebeard, Goblin Tinker Gibzz Sparklighter, and Pandarian Brewmaster Chen Stormstout.  Sylvanas Windrunner was a  Blood High Elf Ranger General of the Silvermoon commanding the Farstriders of Quel’Thalas, until she was slain & ressurrected as an undead banshee to become the Queen of the Forsaken & the Horde of the Eastern Kingdoms. She is a great leader & master strategist purroficient in archery & demonic sorcery!

Packaged in the clear plastic clamshell box with a fold out brochure, this action figure stands appurroximately 7.5″ tall, including the 1/4″ thick terrain base with a couple of trampled skulls by her high heeled boots. Like other World of Warcraft figures, she is incredibly intricately detailed sculpture with purrcise meticulous painting. Her long supple ears extend from holes in the tattered Brown hooded cloak which ruffles & swirls around her. Her sexy lithe figure has pale Blue skin, Yellow eyes, dark lips & hair. On her upurr arms are layered spiked armor with embossed skulls & White feathers, on her forearms are heavy sharp gauntlets & fingerless gloves.

Her bared midriff is revealed by the tight leathery tasseled halter top & tight pants with layered thigh & shin armor. Her left arm is raised as if shielding her eyes from the sun, while down by her side in her left hand is the Longbow of Sunstrider. All of the tooling, engravings & appointments of the clothes & armor are quite exotic & ornate! She is quite stunning with the exquisite detail from the texture & stitching of the cloak & veins of the features, to her toned abs & inny belly button, down to the straps & layered parts of her boots. The colors are gorgeous with so many dark Blue, Bronze, Brown, Black pieces with a distressed antique finish!

As an action figure, it is not very articulated, and in my opinion barely qualifies as such, given that only her forearms can turn at the elbows, but I purrsonally tend to think of it more as a very gorgeous statuette (which is made of PVC plastic if I am not mistaken) that happens to be slightly posable!  Not only was I pleased to add this to the collection, but to sweeten the purrchase I happened to find her slightly damaged and thus I paid the supurr discount purrice! Poor Sylvanas was missing one of her lovely 3/4″ long ear pinnea, but I suppose that is a risk that an undead elven military leader takes on those battlefields.

We were able to do the plastic surgery to replace the missing pinnea with a custom handmade piece! We matched the concaved tapurr of her right ear, dabbed the glue in the hood slot, and matched the paint so it is not that noticeable! I am very pleased with this fine figure and recommend it to fans of sexy sword & sorcery femme fatales! For more information on Sylvanas I recommend her entry at the WOW Wiki http://www.wowwiki.com/Sylvanas_Windrunner and for more about the purroduct line I recommend the DC site http://www.dccomics.com/dcunlimited/wow/!

Nyow if we can regain her attention, purrhaps we can peek into–

Mielikki:

We’re up against another short break, but we’ll be right back with our special guest Elisa Chong!

(snip)(one short break later…)

Our Feature Purrsentation:

An intermew with artist Elisa Chong!

Elizabeth:

Welcome back! In December, our friend Lord Winterwolf who is a patron of the arts, generously donated a lovely painting of the “Naked Bra Catgirl” http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/14.html by Elisa Chong http://www.sofianime.com/ to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art! It is a much appurreciated pic and since then we have been so pleased to become more acquainted with Elisa’s delightful works of art! As Petra mentioned earlier, we nyow have a few more wonderful images by Elisa in the mewseum, and to commemorate the pics’ purremiere, we invited Elisa to visit the island as our special guest! So it is my honor to introduce Elisa and here she is! Aloha and welcome to the Mew- say, would you purrfur to be called Elisa or Sofi?

Sofi:

(wearing a pretty colorful bathing suit, a pretty short skirt and sandals)

Hi Lizzy! Fans and friends call me either Elisa or Sofi, which is short for my nickname, Sofianime. :)

Elizabeth:

Oh, may we get you a tasty beverage?

Sofi:

Iced green tea with cream. And iced coffee with milk. Yum!

Elizabeth:

Coming right up! Sofi, where are you from and what is life like there for you?

Sofi:

I am currently located in Arizona. It is filled with desserts, cactus and pretty birds, but I am always wishing I was relaxing by the beach. It is nice and sunny over here. Life is fun over here. There is so much to do, and yummy restaurants to check out! And the weather is so nice that I like to paint outdoors, as I get some sun and a tan! I was born in a city called Cartagena in South America, next to the beach. I miss the pretty beaches there! They have inspired me to paint so many mermaids!

Elizabeth:

My fellow critic Jenjen is in South America right now modeling for the swim wear photo shoot! So, when did you first realize your artistic talent?

Sofi:

I have been painting since I was five years old, and falling in love with animation and cartoons on TV, and later, being inspired by comic books, manga and fantasy art.

Elizabeth:

Oh I love those too! What kind of education & art training do you have?

Sofi:

I have been a self taught artist all my life. I did go to art school for computer animation as well as classical 2D animation.

Elizabeth:

Are there certain friends, family, purrofessors or other artists  who have purrticularly encouraged and advised your artistry?

Sofi:

Yes, many teachers, and friends who always support me in what I love to do! From some famous teachers who were Disney Animators to inspiration from too many artists and illustrators to mention.

Elizabeth:

That is so good that you get both the encouragement from friends and the expurrt wisdom from the sensei! Who are your favorite artists, designers & illustrators?

Sofi:

Sensei Masamune Shirow, Masami Obari, Naoko Takeuchi, Soroyama, Michael Turner and many international comic book artists and illustrators.

Elizabeth:

Oh those are all such supurrb artists and it is so sad that Michael Turner passed away. Who are your favorite writers & authors, or things to read?

Sofi:

I love reading manga, so many manga artists. I love collecting cookbooks, artbooks, international faerie tale books, metaphysics and success and inspirational books.

Elizabeth:

(the Iced green tea with cream. & iced coffee with milk arrives) Here you go! So what sort of mewsic do you enjoy?

Sofi:

I love classical music, techno music by Dj Sasha and Paul Van Dyk, anime and videogame music.

Elizabeth:

That is the diverse mix! How about your favorite movies, TV shows or games?

Sofi:

Sailor Moon, Utena, Read or Die, Macross series, Cowboy Bebop, Xxxholic, Vampire Knight, Ayashi no Ceres, Samurai Champloo and many more! I love watching anime! :) I love all types of action movies, and sci fi. I also love watching Fringe, NCIS series, and playing games by Namco, Capcom, I am a huge fan of the Tekken and Street Fighter series, Tetrisphere and many other games.

Elizabeth:

Oh we will have to discuss those fun anime & games later at the luau! What are your other hobbies & interests?

Sofi:

I am a hardcore anime and manga collector, been collecting many of my favorite series since 1994. Being an international chef, and experimenting with yummy recipes. I love making delicious foods with international recipes! From Japanese recipes to Latin American recipes and much more!  :) Growing roses, origami, writing, dancing, going to anime conventions, roller skating, Taekwondo, going out for movies, watching anime with friends and finding good sushi restaurants!

Elizabeth:

Sofi:

I love bellydancing, and all types of ball room dancing! It is so much fun! :)

Elizabeth:

JenJen teaches belly dance class, Myayr teaches hula and I like to hot salsa! Hopefully you will have a fun time here! Back to your visual arts. where do you usually create your art? What is your studio like?

Sofi:

In any quiet and relaxing place I can find. My studio is a very comfy and fun place to be. I have a lot of art supplies, a computer, a wacom tablet, and a big desk where I doodle and paint all fun things from my overactive imagination! I have my favorite music playing in my studio while I paint.

Elizabeth:

What are your purrfurred art tools & techniques?

Sofi:

Sakura Koi Watercolors, Koh-I-Noor ink pens, micron pens, bristol board, mechanical pencil, wacom tablet, scanner, photoshop. I like using watercolor techniques for my paintings. I also use color pencils, markers, glittery gel paints and experimenting with new techniques.

Elizabeth:

You have such a nice technique with the delicate yet rich qualities and a great sensitivity to those mediums! Is there a typical size of your illustrations?

Sofi:

I have worked from Aceo to large paintings, 16×24 inches in size. I can paint in any size, but I prefer to create small  paintings, up to 8×10. The larger paintings take me much longer to finish, but they also have lots more detail to them.

Elizabeth:

Could you please describe your creative purrocess? What are the steps from the initial idea to the final finished rendering?

Sofi:

I first do extensive research on the topic and idea of what I want to illustrate, depending on the project. Then I doodle an idea on paper, then I sketch it on bristol board, until I get the image I like.The I ink the entire image, then erase the pencil lines and start applying layers and layers of watercolors, until I am happy with the finished painting. Then I scan it into the computer and share it with all of my fans all over the world. I do all this while listening to fun techno or anime music. :) I can draw ten hours straight this way, nonstop. You can say I get lost in my paintings! It is so much fun! ^.^;;

Elizabeth:

What sort of purroducts do you sell?

Sofi:

Many types of cool products, from beautiful prints to t-shirts and magnets, to skateboards with my art on it! You can see them at http://www.zazzle.com/sofianime or just google: Sofianime or Elisa Chong to find all the products I have available in many online stores! Check them out! I hope you like them!
