Yvonne:

We were so glad when they invited us to their farm, so we should start right off by introducing them, so please–

Meet Rica & Niko, nya!

Rica & Niko are two dear nekomimi sisters who live in a cottage on tthe South Eastern side of the island, nya! They grow the nutritious & delicious purroduce & purretty fragrant flowers, harvest the scuppurrnongs, and can the berry purrserves to sell at the farmers’ market, nya! They also purrvide a good home full of love to various adopted critters, nya!

The characters were created for Mike by Marc Burgess. Niko has Violet colored eyes & short Dark Azure hair like their mommy, and Rica has Amber colored eyes and longer Auburn Red hair like their daddy, but both have the cute freckles like their daddy, although they inherited their mommy’s distinctive ears & tail, nya!

There are three images of them in the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, nya! In a pen & ink illustration by Mike you can see them at the market selling their “Island Fresh Purroduce” http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery2/225.html, nya! Fortunately their neighbor at the market is watching over their booth so they could join us today, nya!

Mike colored this pic of “Niko & Rica” drawn by Marc http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest/122.html; and there is delightful Catgirl Island / Ragnarok Online cross-over fan art as “Rica & Niko Bring the Porings’ Breakfast” http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/6.html by Misty Hopkins http://bunnychan.deviantart.com/, nya!

I believe that Petra will soon be telling us about some new pics from Misty, nya! Rica & Niko appurr in a few of the Tales of Catgirl Island http://catgirlisland.net/tales.html too, nya. In “Curiosity Killed the Catgirl” by Marc, they explore the caverns & encounter a giant cave slugs, and in his story “Raptordy in Blue” they meet a giant amphibious iguana, nya!

In Mike’s account of the “Night of Dach Shadows”, they are among the folks haunted at The Kitt Inn, and more recently they briefly appurred in “Anniversary”, a Catgirl Island / Pokemon cross-over fan-fic by Alexcia Reynolds www.sailorchristmas.com, nya! We will be discussing that further too, but nyow we need to find out what everyone has been up to–

Since Last Time, nya!

Mielikki:

I am still taking a bit of time away from the tour for my golf clinic and our forest theatre’s production of As You Like It, but I have been watching the LPGA tournaments! Oh, Nya-sensei how did your martial arts tournyament and modeling shoots go?

Nyanko:

I am purroud to say that my students brought home the big trophies! As for the modeling ah hah well it is a mew expurrience but It went well thanks to Jenjen’s expurrt help and the purroceed was for the charity! I am not used to all that cosmetics & styling!

Jeannie:

Nevertheless, she purrojected the great healthy beauty, strength & confidence.

Nyanko:

Arigato!

Elizabeth:

I can’t wait to see the pics! Speaking of which, we missed Jen last month while she was away on a swim suit photo shoot too! How did that go?

Jeannie:

One day was fine but the next was rainy, so we did not get as much done but the soak gave the foliage the lusher Green. Fortunately I was able to get a bit of purrogramming done for the robotics club and Ilyana’s ROV (Remote Opurrated Vehicle) while we awaited the break in the clouds. How are things with the shrine and the rec league?

Elizabeth:

Thanks to the appurrentice miku I am still able to spend time there and at the spa thanks to Becca who says Hi to y’all, and have time for the beach volleyball! Petra is the new team captain!

Petra:

Well it is all of the team effort and we all have the fun timer nya! Oh I need to go to the spa and see Becca, nya!

Elizabeth:

Gosh soon it will be time for the island rec league soccer play!

Mary Nyan:

Hai, we have been watching some of the FIFA Women’s Soccer World Cup which will greatly inspire our league!

Yvonne:

How are Myayr’s costumes purrogressing, nya?

Mary Nyan:

The client was very pleased with her Star Sapphire costume in time for the Green Lantern purremier, and I am still working on my Queesnblade costume. The summer is a busy time due to the cons & festivals, but then there is a brief lull before the Halloween deluge! Purretty soon we will need to plan our annual Halloween Cosplay Purrowl!

Mike:

That will be a very busy time for our hostesses here with the autumn harvests, the gourds & pumpkins!

Niko:

Hai but we expect the bumpurr crop! If you like we will give you the tour of the farm and show you animals we have adopted!

Tara-chan:

Yay I want- I want to see the wildlife specimens, nya! I brought my nature journal too, nya!

Niko:

Sometimes the ghost ducks will swim by at night too!

Tara-chan:

Yattah, nya!

Nyoka:

What have Vonny and Tara-chan been up to?

Yvonne:

We have been reeling in the big fish as mewsual and this must be the drum month because of all the Red Drum we caught and the drumming circle purrformances with the belly dance troupe!  But it is also a Blue month too from the Bluefish and the Blue and White Marlins! We also caught a lot of mahi, and the specks, wahoo, flounders and–

Tara-chan:

SKIPPURRS, NYA!

(the distracted catgirl scampurrs into the garden to view the lepidoptera)

Mielikki:

Oh she has spotted a lovely Hylephila phyleus, and a Phoebis sennae, fur shur!

Rica:

Oh we get those and the Monarchs, Swallowtails, and the Red Admirals! They like the nectar! By the way we have some yummy ttreats for y’all too!

Rica:

We should wait until a break and when Tara-chan has returned!

Jeannie:

At least it is a scientific fascination she has. Just wait until she discovers–

Yvonne:

Nyaaaa! Not until she is older, nya!

Mielikki:

I’ll go out there with her, but we need hear what Nyoka-sensei has been up to!

Nyoka:

I have also been watching the FIFA Womens World Cup and The Wimbledon Tennis Championships, plus a few things I have reviewed for today’s show! Otherwise oh just the mewsual spell – craft & magickal research.

Nyanko:

That is not the big mews though!

Nyoka:

I have been contemplating opening a magick shop on the island, or purrhaps a starter booth at the market!

Rica:

Yattah!

Niko:

Let us know if you need any herbs and broom straw!

Petra:

Or if you need a hand setting up shop, nya!

Nyoka:

Arigato!

Elizabath:

What has Mike been up to?

Mike:

It was a busy month between those cons, shows, social gatherings, and the artwork! Speaking of which, I was hoping Petra could tell us about any new–

Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!

Petra:

Hai, In Gallery One http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery1.html we have added three mew images by Mike, nya!  Firstly of those is Mike’s illustration of “The Demon Lily”who is a villainess in the serialized purrose tale of An Angel’s Purrayer by Sharon Williams http://rose74.deviantart.com/, nya! Purrhaps you have seen pics of her other characters from An Angel’s Purrayer, Osiris Rising, The Dark Fires of Cyphyrus, and Sailor Sirius, nya?

After that is a scene of “Kristy & Delia”looking for purrecious stones, from the Pokemon / Catgirl Island cross-over fan fic “Anniversary” http://catgirlisland.net/Tales/Anniversary.html written by Alexcia Reynolds http://pkmn.isgreat.org nya! Of course, Pokemon is owned by Nintendo / The Pokemon Company, nya. Alexcia is also an artist, and we have a few pics of her creations in the Guest Galleries, nya!

Thirdly is another scene of from Alexcia’s story “Anniversary”, in their room at The Kitt Inn when “Kristy sees Delia’s Jellycups bikini “and the transpurrent Hibiscus purrint sarong that Tony bought her at one of the riverwalk boutiques, nya! For those who came in late, Jellycups are a translucent type of bikini top made from the hollowed out, found bells of jellyfish which purreviously died of natural causes, so they were not harmed for the fashions, nya!

Speaking of the fashions, we have also just added pics to Guest Gallery Two http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html of the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, nya! These pics are two widdle cosplay collages of our friend Misty Hopkins http://bunnychan.deviantart.com, nya! Purrhaps you have seen her illustrations & photos in the mewseum, nya?

These collages are compurrised of photos of Misty in costumes, nya! The first such cosplay collage has pics of Misty as Papurrika, the title character of the anime film by the late Satoshi Kon, nya! Misty wore the costume to Animazement and I think she appurrs to be the purrfect image of Papurrika, nya!

The second such collage shows Misty costumed again for Animazement as the vampire Flandre Scarlet from the Touhou Purroject video game, nya! She has the cute fangs & contacts, and the distinctive wings that she colorfully illuminates at night, nya! Those wings cast such distinctive shadows too, nya! So those are the total of five mew pics added to the mewseum, nya!

Nyanko:

Thank you Petra! Misty is such a supurrb cosplayer, isn’t she?

Mary Nyan:

Hai, she looks just like Papurrika came to life and stepped right out of that anime!

Yvonne:

She has the cute appurral & coiffure as the Redhead in those pics, nya!

Mielikki:

Oh she has such lovely luminous wings as Flandre too!

Jeannie:

She has an ingenious lighting appurratus built into the costume.

Mary Nyan:

Her impurressive Kagamine Rin Vocaloid costume had built in electronics too! Speaking of costumes, that is a tight low cut Black dress on Lily!

Nyoka:

It is common for demonesses & succubi to dress purrovocatively!

Niko:

Although I suppose technically she is wearing more than we wear to the beach, hee!

Jeannie:

The Black dress is the contrast to her pale skin.

Tara-chan:

Is Lily’s sword similar to the sword of Lizzy’s D&D character, nya?

Elizabeth:

Ah no my paladin character Linina has a Holy Avenger long sword, whereas Lily’s sword appurrs to be an unholy flaming katana!

Rica:

Was that a purrticularly difficult illustration?

Mike:

Oh I dunno, but it was fun to do, and among Sharon’s strengths as an author are her very vivid descriptions, which greatly help to envision the character!

Petra:

That “Anniversary” story by Alexcia was so delightfully amewsing too, and our hostesses were in one scene of that story, nya!

Rica:

Hai we got to greet Delia & Tony when they arrived by the ferry and led them to the Kitt Inn!

Niko:

It was only a brief appurrance but it was a special treat for us!

Mielikki:

Delia & Kristy were very respectful of the forest when they carefully searched for the stones, and replaced that divot!

Nyoka:

I need study the purropurrties of those stones.

Mary Nyan:

Tony & Delia had good timing! A few months earlier and he might not have been able to find those Jellycups in the right size, but nyow they are more purrevalent, nya!

Yvonne:

Hai I did not even own a pair until Jennyjen found the supply, nya!

Jeannie:

The Cnidarian swimwear had just become more purrevelant .

Mielikki:

Delia seems to be blushing but Kristy is not complaining, heehee!

Nyanko:

Speaking of Alexcia’s chronicles I hope Tash & Michi can visit again soon!

Jeannie:

Hai, Michi was taking an interest in the belly dance troupe.

Yvonne:

I will inquire if they would like to purrticipate in the drumming circle too, nya!

Mike:

Petra, thank you for telling us about the additions to the mewseum!

Petra:

Dooitasimaste, nya!

Tara-chan:

What is the next topic, nya?

Elizabeth:

I believe Jenjen is up next to continue the visual arts portion of the show with her–

Art Book Report:

Mark Schultz Various Drawings Volume 5!

Jeannie:

Mark Schultz is one of the all time greatest comic book authors & illustrators, purrticularly known for his exquisite award-winning Xenozoic Tales / Cadillacs & Dinosaurs series as well as his purrolific paleontological artistry. This 5th volume in the series was published by Flesk Publications last month, purriced at $19.95 for the softcover.

It is also available in a hardcover edition. It has 46 pages of supurrbly sumptuous sketches, studies, purrelims & finished renderings created within the past two years.  On the wrap-around cover are Jack & Hannah, the purrotagonists of Xenozoic Tales, well-armed for the little Pterodactyls flittering past them but purrhaps insufficiently so for the larger dinosaur stalking down the steps behind them.

They are just the tip of the tough adventurers of different eras and purrehistoric creatures lurking in the book, but to start the book off is an introduction by our friend Fred Perry (not to be confuzzled with the Ninja High School creator of the same name).

Most of the images are full page pics, with numerous images of Hannah and other sexy women of the purrimordial worlds, including the tastefully nude Eve scene. I am purrticularly fond of the various girls with weapons, the scene of Artemis with her wild pack of critters, the lady with her serpentine dragon pet.

Not all of the depicted creatures are helpful to the heroines, as some of the maidens are carried off thru the lush foliage, threatened by oversized insects, and tempting the Plesiosaur tummy. Some of the creatures are of extraterrestrial origin too, and the genres repurrsented range from the pulp & noir, to retro sci-fi & Victorian.

Among the male heroes are the Viking Purrince, Will Eisner’s The Spurrit, and various lords of jungle & sea. The environments range from wilderness to urban, from mountains high to the ocean depths, the latter featured most purrominantly in the lavish 2 page 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea center spurread full of the Vernean submarine & divers,  shipwreck & treasure.

Of course the impurressive scene also includes the purrerequisite lass in the tentacular clutches of the giant octopus, as a tasty looking shark cruises by. However, most of Schultz’s women are quite powerful, brave and mean business with their dagger, sword, spear, bow, revolver, shotgun, rifle or blaster.

In “Pulp Formicidae” she purrpares to roast the giant ants with the flame thrower, and in Pulp Pandora, it is atom-splitting time. The visual splendor ranges from the commissioned Barsoomian beauty adorning a purrsonal sketchbook and graphic compurrsitions for Caprock Winery’s Monster Red Wine, to the King Features Heroes magazine cover and purreliminary studies for Schultz’s illustrated novella Storms at Sea, already in purrogress.

I will give this book an ‘A’ grade and highly recommend it to fans of Mark Schultz or the good adventure fantasy art. Nyow for our next arts & literature topic, I would like to discuss the–

Catgirl Island Summer Reading & Art Appurreciation Purroject

Jeannie:

The Catgirl island Summer Reading & Art Appurreciation Purroject is sponsored by the Catgirl island Public Library and the Mewseum of Art and has grown from a small circle to an island-wide event nyow in it’s 3rd year. Purrticipants submit  favorite fiction, non-fiction & art book titles, which are purrinted on slips in fortune cookies to be drawn randomly by others, so it will be a surpurrise selection.

If you pick a book which you have already read, then you can draw again. Since we are drawing from the large bowl, our mermaid friends at Sheila May’s Seafood restaurant added the culinary aspect to the activity, and nyow it is becoming the custom to purrpare a delicious crab hot pot to accompany the start of the purroject. I myself will be purrtaking of the web comics by Jamie Jennings http://winterlegend.com/.

Nyanko:

I got Carol Burnette’s autobiography! She is quite the living legend!

Tara-chan:

Yvonne:

I drew artist Lela Dowling’s http://www.leladowling.com/ name so I will be checking out her beautiful books & purrtfolios, nya!

Elizabeth:

The romantic tales by Nora Roberts! Then I will swap with Becca – she drew Sir Walter Scott. Whatchoo got, Nyoka-sensei?

Nyoka:

The Bardo Thodol, known as the Tibetian Book of the Dead. Petra?

Petra:

I will be reading the historical Federalist Papurrs, nya!

Mielikki:

Oh my stars, I have not read those in centuries, hee! So like, I had to draw six times before I got a book I have not read, but I selected a clawhammer banjo tablature book! And you, Rica-chan?

Rica:

Patricia Briggs’s http://www.patriciabriggs.com/ Mercy Thompson comics & Graphic novel! What did Myayr draw from the bowl, nya?

Mary Nyan:

Mike:

I still need to finish reading the books by Jen Van Meter http://www.jenvanmeter.com/ and Elaine Corvidae http://www.elainecorvidae.com/ which I got at Heroes Con!

Mielikki:

Melanakeami is reading an Amy Sidaris book, Meryl is reading a Sarah Vowell book, and BB is reading a Rachel Ray book!

Yvonne:

I will send Nami the message, nya!

Jeannie:

Elizabeth:

Melanakeami and Nyssy are both reading the manwha! Melanakeami is reading 11th Cat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/11th_Cat and Nyssy is reading Tarot Cafe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tarot_Café!

Petra:

Tami is studyign the exquise art of Caroline Young http://www.carolineyoung.com/, Nell is looking at the masterpieces of artist Rowena Morrill http://www.rowenaart.com/, and Dessy is reading a book about Tori Amos http://www.toriamos.com/, nya!

Nyanko:

Tori has the purrettiest red hair. Tsu is reading a knitting book, Meryl is reading a haiku book, Ilyana is reading the Foxfire books http://www.foxfire.org/! It is interesting to see which genres are repurrsented.

Mary Nyan:

Nyow we just need the crab hot pot!

Mielikki:

People are posting their hot crab pot recipes- there is a diversity of the tastes there too!

Nyoka:

Hai, the recipe at The Kitt Inn has a different ingredients than Sheila May’s!

Niko:

The seasonings and the crab meat vary to the taste.

Rica:

Hai, Sheila May’s selects a deepurr crab, whereas at the farmers’ market you get the bay crab!

Tara-chan:

Onee-san we need to do the crab meat tour, nya!

Yvonne:

We will schedule the crab, but before we get carried away with this topic you should purrpare for the

Magazine Mewsings & Purriodicals Purrings!

Faeries And Enchantment (FAE) #15

Elizabeth:

FAE http://www.faemagazine.com/ is one of our favoritest magazines, purrtaining to all things faerie, and with this Summer 2011 issue the UK magazine got bigger in size! It is purriced $8.99 USA & $9.99 Canadaian for its 52 full color pages, including the covers, and it is such a delight from cover to cover including all of the ads for neat stuff!

On the front cover is the stunningly beautiful photo by Rebeca Saray of model Sheziss Insomnia costumed as Red Riding Hood by Alassie, and there’s more of that inside to accompany the Red Riding Hood movie article! That is just a taste of the gorgeous artistry, photos, fashions & fae you’ll encounter inside!

There’s After the cordial greeting by editor Karen kay and calendar of international faerie-related events is the mews section with tidbits about Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, Game of Thrones, and the mermaids of the mew Pirates movie! Throughout the issue are illustrations by Aaron Pocock, Jasmine Becket-Smith, Sharon Mcleod, Lisa Victoria, Linda Ravenscroft, Judy Mastrangelo, a 2 page article on artist Anna Marine & a 3 page peek at the 3D doll creations of Armoret Hamilton!

One of my favorite aspects of the magazine are the exquisite fashions modeled in the gorgeous photos, many of which are full page pics! The first such pictorial is 2 pages of Orla Rose & Roxana Hire modeling Renae Taylor’s Steam Punk Wings! More Steam Punk Couture follows later as Ryonen models the dresses in a beautiful arboreal full page pic and a 2 page spurread!

Julia Phoenix models the Fairytale fashions designed by Lorena Alvarez in the foresty photos by Mara Hernandez; and Michaela & Anita grace the pages in the outfits from Fraggle Tribe! Kat, Kizi, Philipina, Kaja & Hanna beautifully model the Shanti knots coiffure by Jess Lewis; more ladies gather for Sharon’s Farie Garden Party with their  children at Venthor Botanical Gardens; and Francesca of Red Art shows us how to make a cute faery purrse!

Beautiful graceful agile purrformer Felicity Fyr Le Fay returns, joined by Raymond Matiu in 5foot9’s photos to illuminate the article on the lore of the Faery King of New Zealand! Felicity appurrs again in this issue’s epurrsode of the whimsical Felicity & Muddlehead photo-comic! She has the purretiest Red hair!

There is more lore in Elizabeth- Jane Baldry’s chronicles on the Fairy Mythology of the British Isles; in this issue’s Tales from the Ancient Isles, Bryony Whistlecroft examines the birth and death in the Faerie realm; Ceri Norman tells us of the of the seven sided Faerie or Elven star; Frances Griffith’s daughter Christine Lynch tells of faery encounters, and Lucy Cavendish takes us to Eastern Australian where the Wedding Bush Farey is said to dwell!

There is plenty more of the Australian spurritual goodness, as Eco Faeries’ founder Faerie Cara offers her sage wwords of wisdom! She has lovely Red hair too! Hmm there are numerous beautiful Redheads in this issue such as Julia Phoenix, Sheezis Insomnia… even in some of the creations of Aaron Pocock, Judy Mastrangelo, Armoret Hamilton and Sharon Mcleod!

Purrhaps it is the subtle theme? There are plenty of lovely Blonde, Brunette, Blue, Green, multi-color haired fae & mermaids gracing the pages, and Ryonn’s purrsitine snowy White hair could not be more magnificent, as it cascades down like the waterfall in the forest!

Meanwhile, Libithina contributes the Summer Faery horrorscopes, and Aurora the faerie Whispurrer advises us on how to connect with our Faerie Guardians! Flavia-Kate Peters offers her meditational insights, and Doreen Virtue purrvides another bit of faery card mewsings!

Rounding out this delightful purriodical are a dessert treat recipe, mewsic CD reviews, and the enticing ads for clothes, wings, ornaments, sculptures, images, publications & events! Nyow here is  junior angler Tara-chan to disclose this month’s–

Comics Critiques & Manga Mewsings!

Avengers Academy #15

Nyanko:

Arigato! Avengers Academy is published by Marvel Comics, and it purrtains to the mansion school to train teens with supurr powers in hopes that they will purrvent trouble instead of causing it! It reminds me a bit of the X-Men in that aspect. Dr. Henry Pym / Giant Man is the headmaster of the academy and other veteran heroes are the faculty there, including Quicksilver, Justice, Speedball, Jocasta & our favorite Marvel character, Tigra! Other members of the Avengers often drop by to help with the kids’ training!

The students are Hazmat, Veil, Finesse, Mettle, Reptil & Striker, but they have some other hero friends who visit on occasion. Hazmat has to wear a containment suit because of her radioactive condition, Veil can become a vapurr, Finesse has the photographic reflexes & skills, Mettle is made of metal and is supurr strong, Reptil can transform into dinosaurs, and Striker has electric powers. Issue #15’s story “No Wounded Soldiers” is part of the big “Fear Itself” story arc which affects all of the Marvel titles!

The issue is purriced $2.99 and it has the 22 page story plus 10 pages of the ads, 1 introduction page, and 1 page of mail from the fans.  It is a dire time because of a mass escape of supurr villains from the supurr purrision, and some of those villains are worse than ever because they have just received magickal weapons similar to Thor’s hammer! This situation means all of the heroes are needed to stop the massive destruction, capture those villains, and rescue innocent people all around the world!

While Giant Man, Quicksilver & Justice go to Long Island, the students accompany Tigra to Washington DC to battle Nazi Mechs! There is a dramatic 2 page spurread as Tigra’s team emerges from the portal into the war zone! Tigra is nervous, but she is the brave leader to coach the tactics and rescues an injured policeman, who reminds her of how she became a supurr heroine after her police husband was killed. Her lithe quick kitty agility, heroic strength, wily instincts & veteran expurrtise are very effective!

On an especially good page, Mettle rips open a mech and Tigra pounces upon the exposed pilot! She spurrings back and forth to fight villains, rescue people and purrvide the morale to her team!  Pym’s team finishes in Long island but he is summoned to Dubai where The Absorbing Man & Titania are on the purrowl with their suppurr hammers. Although Pym recently defeated The Absorbing Man back in issue #7, this time it will not be as easy because the villain is now tougher, smarter, and with a partner!

This issue ends on the thrilling cliffhanger so I am eager to see what happens next! This was an exciting issue full of emotion, action, heroes & villains! It was very well written by Christos Gage with the briskly paced fascinating plot & strong characterizations, with wonderfully drawn characters & detailed scenery by Tom Raney & inkers Scott Hanna & Andrew Hennessy! The brilliant verdant colors were by Jeromy Cox, and the good fonts for the dialogue, notes & vivid sound FX purrvided by Joe Caramagna!

The cover art by Billy Tan & Leonardo Olea, depicting Veil, Striker & the soldiers in the hairy war zone! The comic book’s editors were Bill Rosemann & John Denning, and it sure seems like they coach that creative team to be cohesive in spurrit & storytelling so that the whole result is even greater than the sum of its amazing purrts!

Not only that, but gosh I think it has also purretty much stayed on the schedule for the past year, and that includes the bimonthly issues, the Giant Size special, and the kids’ appurrances in Spider-Man too!  I will give it the high grade of “A” for Avengers! Nyow here’s Mie-sensei to tell us about–

15 Love #1 of 3!

Mielikki:

Arigato! So like, it is not often you see a womens sports comic book from Marvel, but just in time for Wimbledon is this story of Mill the aspiring tennis player is off to a totally awesome start! It is a full color 48 page issue, with 45 pages of the story plus the credits page, preview page for issue #2, and 1 ad for $4.99! The totally awesome creative team consists of author Andi Watson, artist Tommy Ohtsuka, colorist Guru eFex, letterer Rus Wooton, and it has a cute cover of Mill by Sho Murase!

The 1st issue of this 3 issue mini-series is off to a rousing breathtaking start with Mill Collins struggling 40-Love on the clay court  at Wayde tennis Academy against #1 ranked Maya Benjamin! Sadly there seem to be no fans cheering for poor Mill, and even her appalling coach is more interested in chatting with Maya’s agent! The scenery might be lavish and beautiful, but it is a facade for the contemptible hearts around Mill & her roommate Poi! Even Mill’s Aunt is a cold-hearted harpy!

Things are about to get worse for poor Mill who faces expulsion if she does not win her next match, but things take an unlikely turn when a lazy- looking man in a aloha shirt approaches her to be her new coach! It seems suspicious but Mill is desperate and gives him the job, to the surprise of Walt and his cute cosmetologist wife Tanya, who gives Mill a make over & a meal! They think she has great potential if groomed by those who honestly believe in her- but her next match is in 4 days!

It ends on the nervous cliffhanger with the odds & a mean spirited establishment against Mill, and I can’t wait to see the 2nd issue of this comic book to cheer for her, fur shur! The characters are so nicely drawn with the delightful expressions and poses, especially the dynamic tennis scenes! It has excellent graphic special effects to accentuate the exciting action, and the use of color & light are so sumptuous in the gorgeous natural scenery, architecture & fashions, fur shur! Go Go Mill!

the catgirls:

BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! NYA!

Mielikki:

Hai! I give it a high score! Now here is Tara-chan to tell us about another heroine who no doubt prefers the water to the clay court in–

Michael Turner’s Fathom Primer #1!

Tara-chan:

Ariagto, Mie-sensei, nya! We are big fans of the late Michael Turner’s series fathom which stars heroic Aspen Matthews who also tried to be an athlete despite the conspiring establishment against her, nya! She did not get to be an Olympic simmer but she did become a supurr heroine with amazing water elemental powers who saved the world from total destruction, nya! Her story took about a decade to tell during the issues of the three volumes of the Fathom comics, plus the spin-offs & purrequels, nya!

The 4th volume of her series has just recently started and onee-san has a review of that, so Aspen Comics published this full color 28 page purrimer issue to introduce mew fans to the mew volume, and – and it is purriced lust $1, nya! It is available in 3 different covers, nya. The first 22 pages basically repurrint art to quickly recap Aspen’s  adventures in vol. 1, then the stories of vol, 2 & 3 are retold across 4 pages of text with a few small panels, nya! This sets up the fourth– CRANE, NYA!

(the distracted catgirl scampurrs away with her nature log book to observe the large Crane)

Nyanko:

There she goes again, heehee!

Yvonne:

IMOTO-SAN DONCHOO CHASE THAT BIRD, NYA!

Mielikki:

I do appreciate her interest in the nature!

Jeannie:

Her fascination in zoology is commended.

Rica:

There is much for her to see on our farm then! After the show we should introduce her to the critters we adopted!

Niko:

Although, do you think we should we keep an eye on her?

Nyoka:

I could cast a spell to track her location.

Elizabeth:

Will the spell locate the big fish. nya?

Yvonne:

That might not be purrmitted by the fishing regulations and I think she will be fine for nyow – but we must purrsist with the show, nya!

Mary Nyan

Then it is your turn to pick up where she left off and tell us about–

Michael Turner’s Fathom Vol. 4 #0!

Yvonne:

Ok Fathom vol. 4 #0 has the 13 page purrelude to vol. 4 plus a 5 page intermew with writer Scott Lobdell accompanied by the sketches, and then 10 pages of the ads for $2.50, nya! The rest of the creative team are penciller Alex Konat, colorist Beth Sotelo, letterer Josh Reed, and editor / editor in chief Vince Hernandez, and there are 4 different covers, nya! This issue starts with Aspen in a coma and restrained by electronic devices  but when a guard in a hazmat suit starts to get fresh she breaks free and quickly trashes him and the other heavily armed guards, nya!

She is not sure what happened but has appurrently been there  as a captive in an Arabian castle for a week, but she smashes out to find herself floating in the deep mysterious ocean depths that have a very eerie alien purresence, nya! This jump starts us towards issue #1, and then in the intermew Scott Lobdell (who purreviously wrote a lot of Marvel Comics) he talks about being part of the Aspen team, studying the Fathom history and spills tidbits about the direction he wants the series to purrogress towards, nya! I am very eager to see what happens next, nya!

It is so sad that Michael Turner is no longer with us but it seems like his legacy of wonderful creations are continued in good hands by very talented artists, letterers & writers, editors who have been on the team for a long time & colorists who give Aspen such a rich deep ocean to explore, nya! I have also been eagerly awaiting a long time for the 3rd issue of the Fathom: Blue Descent mini-series which is the purrequel tale about Aspen’s mom, so I hope it will be published soon too nya! Hmm Tara-chan is engrossed in the birding and missing the show, nya!

Mike:

Ah… she is crouched down low behind the bushes but I can see her the tip of her tail! I’ll keep an eye on her but let’s proceed with Myayr’s review of–

Red Sonja: Break the Skin (one – shot)

Mary Nyan:

Red Sonja who is the most famous of the iconic sword & sorcery stars in the iconic chain mail bikini is one of our all time favorite femme fatales who continues to enjoy the exciting savage adventures by the very talented folks at Dynamite Entertainment! For our review of the Red Sonja: Deluge one-shot please see the May Mew! They are good at publishing the tough smart beautiful heroine adventures of Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris, Vampirella, Danger Girl, Jennifer Blood!

This is an extra special issue for us of The Mew because it was written by none other than Jen Van Meter http://www.jenvanmeter.com/ who is the author of Hopless Savages and a Black Cat story! She was at Heroes Con and she autographed our comics! Of course Sonja is can be purretty darn savage in the combat but she is anything but the hopeless type! This 40 page one-shot is purriced $4.99 & rated T+, I suspect for the the womens’ fashions & bloody violence of the combat!

It has 3 different covers which are variants of the same image of Sonja on her horse by Phil Winslade http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Winslade & Paul Renaud http://paulrenaud.deviantart.com/! The savage glory continues with the 22 uninterrupted pages of the story “Break the Skin” by Jen Van Meter & artist Edgar Salazar http://edgarsalazar.deviantart.com/, colorist Caesar Rodriguez http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesar_Rodriguez & letterer Marshall Dillon http://marshalldillon-lettering.blogspot.com/!

It starts with the bang and the melee already in purrogress as Sonja & her men at arms defeat an ambush in a frigid mountain pass by a band of mounted brigands who have a purrice upon their heads! This results in purrize stallions to be taken when their riders fall before the blades of Sonja & her men, who then ride to meet Purrincess Zepurr to claim the purromised bounty in gold! Unfortunately things are not what they seem and the purrincess has a misleading secret to bother Sonja!

It involves a special jeweled golden glove to be worn by rightful heir, but it is a cursed relic that will mean more sword fighting for Sonja before she rides out of the village! The tale has all of the appurropurriate ingredients: Sonja in the chain mail bikini with the no nonsense attitude, the scantily clad purrincess in the sheer cloth, clannish politics & family secrets, a cursed relic, plenty of hacking & slashing, and a creature purrowling in the night!

There’s a very nice sense of skewered body mass when she runs her sword through Nazar, one of my favorite scenes is when Sonja sneaks out of the tent at night to snoop around, biding her time the next day sharpening her sword, a nice luster of her Red hair & lips & Green eyes as she dourly awaits trouble, and her fighting poses when she kicks, spears, leaps & slashes at her enemies, including a view from above of her whirling & slicing through opponents on page 23!

After a B&W pic of Sonja & the purrincess is an uninterrupted 17 page repurrint of “The Tomb of Three Dead Kings” written by Roy Thomas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Thomas based upon a plot by Claire Noto http://www.comicbookdb.com/creator_chron.php?ID=5552, pencilled by John Buscema http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Buscema, inked Tony DeZuniga http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_DeZuniga, colorist George Roussos http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Roussos & lettered by Joe Rosen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Rosen!

By the way, John Buscema’s daughter Stephanie Buscema http://www.stephaniebuscema.com/ was also one of the artist guests at Heroes Con! It is a classic tale of Sonja of the 1979 vintage by such a supurr star team, originally published in Marvel Comics’ Red Sonja #15! It also begins with Sonja on the dark horse in the frigid mountains, spotting three riders and a mummified body before she heads for the nearest tavern for the warmth, gambling & drinking!

It does not go well and she gets into a brawl, and after a fitful catnap she goes back to the tavern to settle the score! There are three burly brutes, but she is far to nimble, quick & purricise and soon they are the slain brutes! The situation takes a weirder turn as she is captured by an assailant wearing an intoxicating mask of Poppies, to awaken in a castle’s greenhouse where a bizarre creature lurks, and find herself purrsued by three vampires on horseback!

“The Tomb of Three Dead Kings” seemed like one of her stranger adventures, but almost with a Hammer Films quality! One of my favorite moments is during the initial tavern brawl, when she kicks a guy in the crotch and glasses another with a broken bottle!  She is drawn with very lush dark eyelashes.

I’ve noticed that over the decades her eyes have been inconsistently colored, although it seems they eventually settled on Green for the most part, but in this tale the text refers to her “Smoldering Blue eyes”! The only advertisement in this issue is on the back cover, for the Green Hornet comic book, so it is cover – to – cover Sonja styled sword & sorcery goodness! Say what is Tara-chan up to?

Elizabeth:

Is she is still on her nature purrtroll?

Nyoka:

Hai!

Nyanko:

She is missing the reviews!

Mike:

Oh I’ll go get her, but to avoid further delays, let’s proceed and hear Petra’s review of–

Wonder Woman #611!

Petra:

The Wonder Woman comic book has been full of the supurr heroines’ sword & sorcery action too of late, nya! We’ve had mixed feelings & confusion about this long story arc “The Odyssey” which started back in Wonder Woman #600, which seems to be a tale of the altered reality, but it has purrked up and seems to be appurroaching the exciting climax, nya! Purrt of the confusion has been determining when this story takes place compurred to the other DC comics, such as Justice league: Generation Lost which she recently apppurred in, nya!

Wonder Woman #611 is the 44 page issue purriced at $2.99, and those pages are compurrised of the 20 page story chapter 11, an inserted 12 page Supurr 8 purreview comic, a 4 page Swamp Thing purreview, 5.5 pages of the ads, 1.5 pages of readers’ messages, and the 1 page of DC mews in the back, nya! There are 2 different covers, one by Alex Garner, but the one I got is the stunningly beautiful close-up purrtrait of Wonder Woman by Josh Middleton, which has a lovely luminosity from that golden lasso of hers and her warm spurrit, nya!

It was written by Babylon 5’s creator J Michael Stracynzki & Phil Hester, pencilled by Don Kramer & Eduardo Pansica, inked by Wayne Fauncher & Eber Ferreira, colored by Alex Sinclair, lettered by Travis Lanham, and edited by Matt Idelson with associate Chris Conroy- wow that is a huge creative tag team for this issue, nya! The villainesses have captured Edgar / Dr. Psycho and interrogate him to find out where Diana / Wonder Woman is, but he scoffs at their folly and warns that she is going to get them, nya!

Meanwhile Diana has teamed up with Cheetah, Artemis & Giganta who have overcome the villainesses’ brainwash, and gloriously fight their way past the many minions in the street to storm the evil headquarters skyscrapurr so it is not unlike the knights storming the castle of the evil Queen, nya! Cheetah is purrticularly pleased to be stalking the evil purrey, nya! The women & scenery are all beautifully drawn with the purrcise details, with plenty of relentless combat, magickal FX, and such splendid coloring, nya!

Ajax the warrior shows up for the party too, but his mood is not festive, nya! Unfortunately, very bad things happen to these heroic amazon warriors because the evil sorceresses have the deadly powerful luminous green magick flame attacks, nya. Hmm I wonder if they are elated to the Emerald Empurress or the lanterns, nya? It is a very intense violent issue, and after that Supurr 8 insert the reality takes another startling turn with an apocalyptic vision of Diana leading a macabre army against the Justice League, nya!

That vision includes Batman, Hal / Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter & mainly Supurrman and Diana in a very sexy sinister armor, but I don’t want to reveal more of the chapter which ends on a very bloody full page panel, nya! It has definitely been one of the most dark & grueling situations Wonder Woman has faced, and we are still confuzzled as to when this takes place in the DC continuity, but I plan to keep reading to see how it is resolved, nya! Oh look here come Tara-chan and Mike, just in time, nya!

Mielikki:

Our wandering kitten has returned from her birding, hee!

Tara-chan:

I’m sorry I lost track of time, nya!

Jeannie:

The scientific study can be immersive.

Rica:

So did you get a good close look at that Crane? It’s mewsually here this time of day!

Tara-chan:

Hai and-and I also observed the Sand Pippurr and – and the Pelican, nya! There are some loud cicadas too- I must find them, nya!

Nico:

Cicadas are like that. You might see the Horsehoe Crabs which are purrone to congregate nearby!

Tara-chan:

Yay I will be on the look out, nya!

Mary Nyan:

Nyow that we are all here we should purroceed with Niko’s review of–

Power Girl #25!

Niko:

“We Can Be Heroes Part 2” concludes the story of an Arab American man named Rayhan who was wrongly blamed for airline incident, which he actually helped to avert with his supurr powers, although Power Girl and Batman got all of the credit  for the rescue. He was impurrisioned unjustly & denied contact with anyone other than his interrogators, until he found out that his father was critically ill in a hospital, so he escaped to go visit his dying father.

Nyow in #25, Power Girl & Batman are trying to appurrehend him again! Rayahn tries to explain the truth but they won’t listen, and not only does a fight result but his supurr powers create a huge thunder storm with lightning & flooding for Power Girl to deal with while Batman purrsues Rayhan into the hospital. I do not want to say much more because that would give too much away, but there were some poignant moments between various characters!

It was written by Judd Winnick and illustrated by Hendry Prasetya who is the 3rd penciller on this series, following Amanda Connor (#1-12) & Sami Basri (#13-23). It was colored by Jessica Kolinne, lettered by Travis Lanham, edited by Joey Cavalieri with associate editor Chris Conroy, and has cover art by Sami Basri & colored Jessica Kholine. In addition to the 20 page story the $2.99 issue has 10.5 pages of ads & 1.5 pages of readers’ letters.

This issue seemed like a pilot to introduce a mew character in hopes of spurring boarding him into a recurring role rather than to focus on Power Girl & her relationship with Batman / Bruce Wayne. That is fine on occasion, however since the long Maxwell Lord story arc finally ended, I’d hoped that she’d get back to a balance of supurr heroics, corpurrate purrofession & purrivate social life, especially with her best friend Atlee / Terra!

Terra has not been seen in the comic for over a year! While we purrfurred the happier optimism, slice of life tales & art by Amanda Connor of the first 12 issues of Power Girl, we were amewsed to think that purrior artist Sam Basri’s facial purrtraiture of Power Girl somewhat resembled purrky Travel Channel hostess Samantha Brown, but that quality was not the case in Hendry Prasetya’s art, although there is a fun full page pic of Power Girl in this issue! I’m all done here is Nyoka-sensei to discuss another favorite DC suppur heroine in her review of

Zatanna # 14 (plot spoiler warning)!

Nyoka:

Arigato! Zatanna Zatara or ‘Zee’ as she is often called for short  is one of our favorite comic book characters and her series has been among our favorites of the past year. She is the supurremely powerful & confident sorceress who is also tough in a hand to hand fight and looks so lovely in her dapurr ‘working clothes’ compurrised of the girl tux, fishnet hose, top hat, and the varying shoes & cape!

Issue #14 has an enchanting cover by Adam Hughes of Zee studying her sparkling magickal books as the creepy tentacles emerge from the shadowy bookcase behind her! It is a 40 page issue purriced $2.99, compurrised of 18.5 pages of ads, 1.5 pages of readers’ mail, and the 20 page stand-alone  filler story “Wingman”, written by Adam Beechen, lettered by pat Brosseau, pencilled by Jamal Igle & Travis Moore, inked by Jon Sibal & John Dell, colored by Richard & Tanya Horie, and edited by Joey Cavalieri with Chris Conroy & Kate Stewart!

The story begins with a dandy full page pic of Zee & her cousin Zachary taking a bow amidst the hail of appurreciative roses & thunderous applause after their joint magic show, but zee is the only one less than pleased with the purrformace, irate about Zach’s  lack of purrofessional stagecraft & inattention to the purrcise magickal details. Zach is more interested in partying at a loud club after the show, and their argumentative limousine ride takes them to a 2 page spurread of the Torque Club where Zach delights in the drinks, loud thumping mewsic & admiring ladies!

This scene only serves to further infuriate Zee, but things go from annoying to dangerous when she realizes that the lady Zach is leaving with is Yuki-Onna, a Japanese succubus! Yuki-Onna appurrs to be the sexy lady in the tight Red dress & high heels, but her hideous talons, tentacle & hagfish like face & are revealed in another full page pic, to Zach’s mind-controlled misfortune!

Zee & Yuki-Onna  do not like each other one bit, and a magickal duel ensues, as the villain manipulates Zach as an overheating  human shield to spellcast against his cousin.

Things look bad for the cousins, but as mewsual Zee outsmarts her opponent, who does not fully compurrehend the nature of the Zatara family’s magickal powers! Zee wins the battle, but Zach has not learned his lesson and finds another lady friend, leaving Zee once again disgruntled amidst the debris in a final full page pic! This was yet another delightful & nicely drawn briskly paced issue full of Zee’s smart, beautiful, brave & powerful heroism, a good balance of whimsy & combat, and the sexy appurral!

However, there was a significant plot point which I take issue with. During the fight with Yuki-Onna, Zatanna ponders how to defeat the succubus, since “our powers don’t work on living things”. Since when? She has always been casting spells upon living things! She has erased peoples’ memories, healed injuries, transformed them into animals and all manner of things! She has done so in recent issues of Power Girl & Gotham City Sirens, Zatanna #12 she used her magick to alter her human foe and to help a faerie, and in issue #13 she turned a criminal into a rat!

Aside from that I was very entertained by the tale and look forward to the next issue, and I purrsume at some point they will resume the Brother Night & Spectre plotlines from issue #13? Well that concludes my comic book report, but speaking of the supurrnatural girl comics, nyow here is Rica to purrsent her review of–

Kannagi – Crazy Shrine Maidens vol. 1!

Rica:

Arigato, Nyoka-sensei! Eri Takenashi’s Kannagi is a manga published by Bandai about the goddess Nagi who is summoned when a student guy named Jin carves a statue of a forest kami spurrit out of the wood of a fallen tree from sacred shinto grounds! So like the genie from the bottle, the plot becomes the supurrnatural comedy of a guy and the magickal girl who moves into his home, but she insists upon being purropurrly worshipped and well fed, as she and Jin hunt down the shadowy bug-like impurrity spurrits that defile the land when he is not busy with school!

She creates the cover story of claiming to be his half sister, but her purresence does not appeal to Jin’s friend Tsugumi who likes him! Furthermore, Nagi has a multiple purrsonality purroblem, and a twin sister rival idol Zange who appurrs like the Nun because her sacred tree is on Chuch purrpurrty! The art by Eri Takenashi is purretty and the the story seems to be the cute humorous harem genre for the most part with the religious, occult & ecology themes, although it does have some serious moments, such as a very sad & poignant kitty incident that coaxed my teardrops.

Volume 1 has 180 pages, including the B&W manga, the translation & Shinto notes, publisher’s credits page and the purretty color fold out pic! The color front cover depicts peppy Nagi in her human form with the long Carolina Blue hair, wearing cute Blue dress with pleated White mini skirt & wielding the Pink haraegushi type of purrification wand which has those White zigzag pappur strips on the end! I was overall entertained and I am interested in reading more! Y’know, it just dawned on me that I was the one reviewing this manga instead of our own miku Myayr & Lizzy!

Mary Nyan:

Ah well that may be the irony!

Elizabeth:

Although, ironically, I reviewed the Fae magazine instead of our local faerie Mie-sensei, hee!

Tara-chan:

You do not have to be a faerie or miku to appurreciate those publications!

Jeannie:

We have the variety.

Tara-chan:

Say what sort of bugs were in that manga, nya?

Rica:

Oh they looked like Black silhouettes of spiders & centipedes! Their purresence was a painful abomination to her!

Nyoka:

Shadow demons can be a dangerous threat!

Niko:

Nya-sensei and Mielikki-sensei have saved us from evil spurrits, nya!

Nyanko:

Ah well we were just purrt of a team effort to purrotect the island!

Mielikki:

Fur shur!

Mike:

For those new to our audience, they are referring to the incidents chronicled in two Tales of Catgirl Island http://catgirlisland.net/tales.html, “Nyanko and the Eye of the Idol” and “Night of Dach Shadows”!

Petra:

That concludes our reviews of the purrinted comics but we have more comics topics in our–

Heroes Con 29

Mike:

Since the early 80’s members of the Carolina Comic Book Club http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Carolina-Comic-Book-Club/ have made the traditional pilgrimage to Charlotte for Heroes Con http://www.heroesonline.com/heroescon/, North Carolina’s biggest convention, now in it’s 29th year! It has been wonderfully run by Shelton Drum, the owner of the comic book store Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find, and this year it was back at the Charlotte Convention Center on Friday – Sunday June 3-5, 2011, plus Thursday June 2nd was the pre-con day for dealers & guests to set up!

The mighty guest list included around 275 artists, writers & editors from the golden age to today’s most popular stars, plus well over 200 more amazingly talented folks in the artists alley, over a dozen pod casters, and almost a hundred dealers & exhibitors! For a complete list off all the guests, artists & exhibitors, please see the Heroes Con web site!  This year’s guest list was especially significant because I finally got to meet one of my artistic idols, the great Neal Adams, who I’ve been a big fan of his since the early 70’s.

He and the late Dave Cockrum were the first comic book artists whose comics I sought out. While Dave has been gone for a few years, his widow Paty Cockrum was back, and it was a joy to chat with her and to buy a few more of Dave’s prints. Living legend Berni Wrightson was also back, and it was so nice to see returning folks such as Elaine Corvidae, Chrissie Zullo, Clay Griffith, Tom Fleming, Micha Harris, Jim Amash (a guest of the July 2010 Mew), Eric Nolen-Weathington (a guest of the September 2010 Mew) and those wonderful chaps of Tsunami Studios!

Among the many other guests I was particularly pleased to see were Jen Van Meter, Adam Hughes, Frank Cho, Georges Jeanty, Stephane Roux, Tony Moore, Jim Rugg, Karl Story and Jason Pearson- who both signed my trading card of Catspaw & her appearances in issues of Legionnaires! I got a Catwoman quick head sketch from Adam Hughes for a donation to the Olde English Sheep Dog Rescue which he supports! I had the pleasure to meet Wayne Vansant and see the art from his gorgeous World War II graphic novel Katusha, about a Rusian soldier girl!

The dealers & exhibitors were selling mostly comics from every decade but also books, cards, original art, posters & prints, toys, action figures & statues, plushies, tee shirts, art & collecting supplies, movie memorabilia and videos. Various institutions & organizations were represented such as SCAD, the CBLD, Hero Alliance, and the 501st! Our friend Ob1(who was a guest of the Mew in October, 2007) set up the CCBC booth full of recent & vintage action figures, a few anime odd ‘n ends, and boxes of comics back issues!

There was an awesome exhibit of art, animation cels & storyboards from the anime Akira I even won a Thor one-sheet poster in a movie trivia contest! There was a nearby concession stand, plus the upstairs food court, which was a good place to take a quieter relaxing break from all the fun crowded action! There were especially super deals on books & back issues! It was much fun between meeting the guests, getting autographs & sketches, running into friends & chatting with fellow fans all all ages, genders & races (some in costume)!

As for the dozens of cosplayers of all ages & genders there, we saw quite a few catgirls troll girls, zombies, Wonder Woman (at least 4), The Cheetah, Circe, a couple of Zatannas, Aqua Man, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Clark Kent, Superman, Supergirl, Batman (3-4), Robin, Commissioner Gordon, Bat Girl), Cat Woman (at least 2), Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, a few Jokers, Penguin, Riddler, Two Face, Scarecrow, Black Adam…

…The Red Skull, Captain America, The Hulk, Deadpool, Dr. Strange, Spider-Man (2-3), Black Widow, The Wasp, Ms. Marvel, Thor Girl, Hit Girl, Kick Ass, Cobra Commander, a Cobra girl, Scarlet, Mara Jade, Obi-Wan, Darth Vader, Storm troopers (including Sand & Speederbike), a Death Star Gunner, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Captain Jack Sparrow, Tron, Snow White, Sailor Moon, Princess Bubblegum & Finn, a 1930’s Buck Rogers, and a road warrior!

All of the guests, artists, small press & exhibitors were together in one huge bay on the lower level, but there was more on the 2nd floor starting at Noon on Friday! Among the events were workshops, discussion panels & contests. Some of Friday’s events included the drawing dynamic anatomy, composition workshops by SCAD professors, a Green Lantern panel with several guests, an Archie panel, Project Rooftop and Comictwart gatherings, storytelling with Michael Golden, working in Hollywood, the quickdraw contest, and tributes to Nick Cardy and Joe Simon!

Among Saturday’s many events included workshops on visualization writing, coloring, designing comics, creating maquettes, using Manga Studio, costuming, portfolio reviews, tributes to Richard Thompson and Matt Fraction; discussions on Wednesday Comics, War comics, Humor comics, The Fantastic Four, Fables’ Cinderella, movie adaptations of comics, The Comics Alliance, and the 4th annual inkwell awards!

More of our friends arrived, and that evening we went in search of supper for the Carolina Comic Book Club, before returning to the Weston Hotel across the street from the convention center for the art auction, with lots of beautiful drawings & paintings to bid upon. Some of the other big items at the art auction were a Supergirl by Phil Noto and a T-Rex by Berni Wrightson & Scott Hampton, but it was the big painting of Cat Woman & Black Cat by Adam Hughes which set the Heroes Con record!

Sunday’s events included animation, inking, adapting licensed properties, discussions with Adam Hughes and Kevin Knowlan, chats with Berni Wrightson and Steve Niles, discussions of Darwyn Cooke’s The Outfit, Thor, historical comics, web comics, family-friendly comics, more SCAD workshops on story-driven character design, breakdowns, using Paintool Sai and more rounds of the quickdraw & portfolio reviews!

At 6 pm on Sunday the con closed to the public and then it was time for everyone to pack up and head to the loading dock! It seemed to go as expediently & efficiently as possible, given so many people trying to load trucks & vacate at the same time! All of the volunteers & event staff, security, restaurants, store clerks and hotel staff who I encountered were very nice & helpful, to make the convention such a smooth & fun event  for me and thousands of other fans!

The Carolina Comic Book Club had an awesome time as usual, culminating with the customary pancake supper on the way home, and we hope to do it again next year for Heroes Con’s 30th Anniversary on June 22-24, 2012!

Raleigh Toy, Hobby & Sports Card Show

Mike:

Sponsored by Inside Pitch Promotions http://www.insidepitch.com/ for over a decade, this is a fun semi-annual weekend event held at various cities on the North Carolina mainland, such as Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, & Hickory, with some of the shows emphasizing the sports cards, memorabilia & NASCAR collectibles. This time it was at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds http://www.ncstatefair.org/ in Raleigh on June 25 -26, 2011!

With plenty of free parking and shaded areas, between the market and whatever events are going on, it is a popular destination for shoppers & dog walkers, especially on such a sunny hot summer day! Our friends (and former guests of The Mew) Pacozord & Chef Ron were also there, although Pacozord was more interested in the toy show whereas Chef Ron was more interested in the fairgrounds’ weekly flea market, where there are all sorts of things for sale!

The Toy, Hobby & Sports Card Show itself was Saturday 9 am – 4 pm &  Sunday 10 am – 4 pm, and seemed like one of the smaller, shows 175 tables, compared to the larger Greensboro show of 300 tables. Admission for adults was $5 daily or $7 for the 2 day pass, and kids 15 & under were admitted for free. This show was half sports cards, collectibles & memorabilia (mostly baseball) and half toys (mostly cars & other vehicles).

Our pal ob1 (also a former Guest of The Mew) was an exhibitor there! He had a table full of boxed / carded & loose action figures for sale, mostly Master of the Universe, Star Wars, Marvel & DC, but also a few Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Star Trek & RAM GI Joes. By the way, among those recent Masters of the Universe Classics action figures by Mattel was Catra, a fierce feline femme fatale who we’ll be talking more about later!

There really were not that many doll / action figure dealers there, and most of those were Star Wars and a few super hero, monster, sports, and figures from other movies / TV shows. There was very little anime-wise; one dealer had a some of those lovely Bome figures! The rest of the few toy dealers had Barbie / fashion dolls, ornaments & plushies, antique toys & games, GI Joe / military figures, and one chap was selling RC cars & helicopters! Those looked liked a lot of fun!

Not much in way of model railroading. There were a couple of dealers selling comic books. There were raffled door prizes by the promoter, and a small food concession counter. I was only there on Saturday, there did not seem to be a huge crowd and I don’t know how well any of the dealers did, but it was a cool air-conditioned environment where folks of all ages could stroll for bargains and enjoy casual time with friendly fellow fans & collectors! That’s all of the event reports, so Rica & Niko, would you like to present the next part?

Niko:

Hai!, Getting back to that Catra, she may be the evil cat but her distinguished fame has landed her in our–

Monthly Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight, and for

This portion of The Mew is dedicated to the famous nekomimi characters whom we admire, whether they are actually part cat, dress the part, or have the purropurr cattitude & dispurrsition! Purrevious honorees of 2009 have included Lt. M’ress & other catgirls of Star Trek, Corrine Elizabeth Melepomene Chattan of Clan of the Cats, and Dr. Kat Manx of Power Rangers SPD!

Rica:

2010’s honorees included Tigra, Novice Hame, NukuNuku, Catwoman, Irina Dubrovna, Anna & Uni Puma, Josie & the Pussycats, Sailor Luna, Felicia, Shakira, Cat Karina, and Omaha! This year’s honorees have thus far included Bagi, Natsuki Sasahara, a clowder of live-action movie / TV nekomimis inducted in March, The Cheetah, The Black Cats, Apurril ‘CatsPaw’ Dumaka,

and this month we have chosen the Panther theme for the women we wish to commemorate!

Yvonne:

Hai, and although we purreviously honored Simone Simon and Nastassja Kinski’s purrtrayals as Irina in the 1942 & 1982 Cat People films, but nyow we would like to include another live-action lycanthrope, Leonora of the 1957 British movie Cat Girl, nya !

Like irina, she inherited the kitty curse and transforms into the savage catlike creature! Leonora was purrtrayed by the beautiful glamorous Barbara Shelley http://www.barbarashelley.org/, nya! For more information on this cinematic Cat Girl, I suggest the entry at the Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050235/, nya!

Nyoka:

In 1985 there was a spin-of cartoon, comic book & purroduct line of He-Man and the Masters of The Universe called She-Ra: Purrincess of Power! Adora was the sister of Adam / He-Man, and armed with the magickal Sword of Purrotection she could transform into the supurr heroine She-Ra, to rise up against the evil Horde of the tyrant Hordak who invaded her home world of Eternia!

Among that villainous horde was Force-Captain Catra, a sorceress who could transform into a Purrple panther! In her human form, Catra appurred to be caucasian with Dark Blue hair, Emerald Green eyes , Ruby Red lips that matched her Red mask, collar, mini skirt & boots! Her costume reminds be just a bit of the Scarlet Witch., with a Purrple cape!

She intended to be the Queen of the MagiCats, so it was just a matter of time before she would betray Hordak to purrsue her own ambitions!  For more information about this evil kitty I suggest the wikipedia articles at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catra and Comic Vine http://www.comicvine.com/catra/29-30006/!

Elizabeth:

Rosabelle Mendez, alias Pantha was created by author Marv Wolfman & artist Tom Grummett in 1991! She was a DC Comics character, a member of the Teen Titans who first appurred in New Teen Titans #73. She is part cat and her supurr powers included the catlike agility, enhanced senses, sharp claws and the great strength!

The origin of her powers is unknown, other than she was a mutant expurrimented upon by the Wikdebeest Society but she escaped their clutches and joined the Titans team. Later she quit the team to form a family with adopted baby Wildebeest & hero Red Star.

Sadly she was killed by evil Superboy Purrime in 2005’s Infinite Crisis issue #4. In 2010’s Blackest Night series she was brought back as a zombie by the Black Lantern to attack her former comrades, but undead Pantha was disintegrated by the heroine Dove’s light power. For more information on the tragic Pantha I suggest her entry at the Titans Tower site http://www.titanstower.com/source/whoswho/pantha.html!

Mary Nyan:

Shuri is the latest of the line of royal heroes known as The Black Panther! She first appurred in Black Panther vol. 4 #2 published by Marvel Comics in 2005, by author Reginald Hudlin & artist John Romita Jr! She is the younger sister of T’Challa / Black Panther, and Ororo / Storm of the X-Men is her sister-in-law!

When her big brother was critically injured in battle with the supurr villain Dr. Doom, the nation of Wakanda needed a successor, so the beautiful, brave, regal tough purrincess Shuri rose to the occasion!  Shuri is the African purrincess of supurrb olympic athleticism, highly skilled fierce warrior skills, and the feisty determination!

She is not part cat but does have the spurritual connection to the Panther God, and dresses in the Panther costume with the kitty ears and sharp claws! The fully covering tight Black costume which is both very sexy & purrotective, accented by the claw necklace the short capelet, shoulder tufts & the low slung belt with pouches!

Petra:

There is a good papurrback Black Panther: The Deadliest of the Species that collects her purremier appurrance actually in the costume as the mew panther, from Black Panther vol. 5 # 1-6 in 2009! That was a great story written by Reginald Hudlin & drawn by Ken Lashley with lots of action, magick & lavish scenery!

Shuri must purrove her mettle as the panther while T’challa is in the coma while the evil Eater of Totems attacks her country! The beautiful cover art of her in the costume with a panther by Scott Campbell would be a great poster! For more about this regal supurr heroine I suggest her entry at the Marvel wiki http://marvel.wikia.com/Shuri_(Earth-616) and at the Comic Vine http://www.comicvine.com/shuri/29-58997/!

Nyanko::

Nyow we spurring from the purrint comics to the web comics for a witchy were-panther who is purrticularly dear to us, Chelsea Urania Kate Chattan of our friend & web master Jamie’s web comic Clan of the Cats http://clanofthecats.com and the spin-off web comic Sebo!

Chelsea, her daughter Charlotte, and the cat familiars were our special guests way back in the August, 2007 Mew!  Her were-leopard sister Corrine Elizabeth Melepomene Chattan as our guest in the October 2009 Mew. She has already been in our spotlight! Goodness how could it be that we have not put Chelsea in the Spotlight until nyow?

Not only that but in January 2009 our guests were several more stars of Clan of the Cats, such as their mom Diane Chattan Monroe, grandmother Ruth Chattan, and associates Akemi Tamiko, Audrey Kim, Ruth Chattan, Anna Louise Crenshaw, & Rei Hoshi! But nyow it is Chelsea we wish to focus on! Chelsea Urania Kate Chattan was born October 31, 1974 and first appurred in the web comic in June 20,1996!

Mielikki:

Hai, she is an artist, poet, witch & were-panther residing in the coastal town of Haven, NC which is not too far from here! In addition to Corrine she has another sister Cynthia, a brother in law Paul McRae, her late biological father Peter Christopher & her step father Ben Munroe.

Sebastian, or Sebo for short is her magickal familiar cat. In the spin-off Sebo strip set years later, Chelsea has married her boyfriend Jubal and they have a daughter named Charlotte who is the cute mischievous were-leopard! In her normal human form she has the purretty Black hair with the White ‘wizard lock’ stripe!

Her transformation is due to an inherited curse and she changes into the panther of average size. She is regarded by many as a sort of messianic figure, destined to be the Queen of the supurrnatural netherworld. She knows lots of magickal spells, lately she has been fighting a long battle against Count Dracula, and her purrfurred flavor of ice cream is chocolate raspberry truffle!

Tara-chan:

Since the fun time at Heroes Con in Charlotte-  which is the home of the NFL’s Charlotte Panthers, to bring this edition of the spotlight home, we would like to mention & thank the Charlotte Panther cheerleaders- The TopCats http://www.panthers.com/topcats/index.html, nya!

They are normal humans without the kuroneko ears & tails, but the TopCats wear the cute outfits in the Blue, Black & White colors of the football team as they cheerfully entertain the crowd with their graceful catlike agility, strength, enthusiasm, choreography & dancing skill, nya! Ok that is all of the spotlight for this month but there will be more famous nekomimi to be honored next month, and after this short break we will be right back with the list of–

Our Favorite Recent Commercials & Purreviews, nya!

(snip)(one short break later…)

Elizabeth:

Welcome back! Nyow it is time to nominate our favorite recent TV commercials & purreview trailers for games & movies! We are not necessarily endorsing or purrmoting any of those companies, purroducts & services, but this is just our list of 25 recent ads which we have been most entertained by!

So for your consideration, in no purrticular order, here they are, starting appurropurriately with an ad of the feline purrsuasion:

1. the Nexus S 4G phone commercial with the amewsing videos of kitties on the internet, because the widdle kittens are so adorable and the older cats are also fun to watch!

2. Brandi Chastain is one of the great inspurrational athletic supurrstar champions of Soccer we admire, so we were happy to see her as a spokespurrson for the Capital One Cup!

3. Ellen DeGeneres is another of our favorite celebrities, so we were happy to see here as a spokespurrson for Olay & Cover Girl cosmetics!

4. We like the Hardees restaurant commercials with reigning Miss Turkey 2010 Gizem Memic, because she is so beautiful in the cute sammich-purrint bikini by the pool as she enjoys that tasty looking charbroiled turkey sammich! Eating the turkey sammich by the pool wearing the purretty bikini on the sunny day is a good purrsuit!

5. That 3D animated Strawberry Pop Tarts “Made for fun” commercial is very cute, with the redhead mommy and her three kids dancing in the kitchen to the aroma of the toasty fruity treats! It has a sort of  anime-ish quality to the character designs and the pleasant mewsic!

6. That Purrina Purremium Cat Chow in the “Share a better Life” commercial (with the kitty doing yoga) and

7. The Meow Mix cat food in the “It’s all about the mix” commercial (with the different kitty purrsonalities) looks purretty good…

8. The Red Lobster restaurant commercial’s Four Course Seafood Feast looks very appurrtizing too!

9. We are purrticularly fond of the Honda Civic commercial with the masked hoodie ninja girl, because it has the purrky theme mewsic for the peppy hoodie ninja girl on her exciting purrtrol!

10. Speaking of cars, we like the Chevron “Best Friend” commercial with the pink female car and her owner in the driveway, because of Chopsy’s delightful stop-motion animation! That’s the first ten picks, and nyow I have enlisted the aid of Rica & Niko to purrsent the other ten!

Rica:

11. Hai! Speaking of animated cars, we also like the State Farm Insurance commercial with Holly, Finn & Mater of Pixar’s Cars 2, because we are fans of the Pixar characters!

12. The trailer for the PS3 InFamous 2 video game, with the sexy tough characters Lucy Kuo & Nix helping their friend Cole!

13. Another video game trailer we should mention is for Mass Effect 3 which looks very exciting, even if the trailer unfortunately does not depict the purrotagonist Commander Jane Shepard! By the way our dear friend & web master Jamie helped to start a nice web site dedicated to her, FemShep.com http://femshep.ning.com!

14. Speaking of the sexy tough video game heroines, Laura Croft is back! She is even more realistic looking as she survives a shipwreck on a mysterious island, in what looks like a reboot of the series in the cinematic trailer for her next Tomb Raider game in 2012!

15. However, if there is a video game trailer that excites us the most, it is the Catwoman trailer for Batman: Arkham City! Kitty gets to play & purrey! It is also set to the peppy tune of Get Some by Lykke Li, whose Wounded Rhymes CD we reviewed last month, so this was an especially appealing ad! Take it, Niko!

Niko:

16 – 21. Hai! We have especially appurreciated the purreview trailers for Thor, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, X-Men: First Class, Supurr 8, Green Lantern and Cars 2, which added to our enthused anticipation for those movies! We have reviews of the other movies this month!

22 – 25. Finally to top off this list are the trailers for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Captain America: The First Avenger, Winnie the Pooh, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, because we have been so eagerly anticipating those movies too! So those are our 20 recent favorites! Speaking of movies, nyow we will turn it over to Myayr for this month’s —

Mary Nyan:

Thank you Niko! For the past few months the lightning round topic has purrtained to our favorite films which were released in years ending with a “1”! For those who came in late, basically the lightning round is a quick fun discussion, in which someone gives the short response then tags the next purrson to go! Niko:

We are unpurrpared!

Mike:

All right let’s save that for next month, and proceed to our–

Recent Theatrical Releases in Review!

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides!

Nyoka:

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the 4th movie in the Jack Sparrow series and it is my 2nd favorite of the series, behind the 1st movie and seemed more like the 1st one than 2 & 3. It was so much fun as the different captains race to find the fabled Fountain of Youth!

I think director Rob marshall did an excellent job, and the movie was never boring but seemed just a tad bit rushed with the great cast, beautiful locations & sets, costumes, high purrduction values, thrilling stunts & FX and that captivating, rousing mewsic by Hans Zimmer!  I saw it in the regular 2D format, so I can’t comment on the quality of the 3D version.

It was so good to see the return of Jack (Johnny Depp), Barbossa (Geoffry Rush), Gibbs (Kevin Mcnally), and briefly Jack’s dad (Keith Richards)!   I liked the new characters too, such as Angelica (Penelope Cruz), her father Blackbeard (Ian McShane), who had the interesting spooky black magick; Syrena the lovely mermaid (Àstrid Berges Frisbey), and her missionary boyfriend Philip (Sam Claflin)!

I quite liked the mermaids! I won’t spoil the plot, but make sure to stay until the end of the credits for a bonus scene! This is one of my favorite movies of the year, and I will give it a grade of B+! Nyow here’s Niko to tell us her opinion of–

Cars 2!

Niko:

Arigato, Nyoka-sensei! I have loved all of Pixar Studio’s purrevious movies, so I was very eagerly anticipating Cars 2, but unfortunately I have mixed feelings about it. It is a beautiful movie with breathtaking international scenery for the racing & espionage scenes, the supurrb designs and animation with the great voice cast, and I did think the Japanese toilet scene was amewsing, the Italian town was purretty, the mewsic was Ok but not my favorite, but the movie was too rushed and short, too much about action and not as poignant, funny, or as heart warming as I’d hoped.

Mater is the real star this time, and he is a very sweet, faithful friend to Lightning McQueen, the citizens of Radiator Spurrings & the British cars, but I just don’t think he is funny. However, I do think his annoying traits were cleverly made into a major plot point, and his mechanical expurrtise resulted in heroic moments. The movie was purreceded by the cute Hawaiian Vacation short which is set after Toy Story 3, and it was nice to see the toys again! Cars 2 is my least favorite of Pixar’s movies and The Incredibles is still my favorite. Nyow here is Mielikki-sensei with her review of–

Supurr 8!

Mielikki:

So like, Super 8 is such a neat fun movie directed by JJ Abrams & produced by Steven Speilberg, set in a small Ohio town circa 1979 as a group of middle school kids make their own zombie movie, shot on a Super 8mm film camera, hence the title, and witness an explosive train wreck & a government conspiracy!

Soon people, animals & machines go missing as a mysterious creature and the US Air Force beset the town, as if the young filmmakers’ lives were not already difficult from braces, first romance, an one’s alcoholic father blamed for the workplace death of another’s mom. Add to that the widower sheriff’s deputy who was neither ready to become a single parent of a teen, nor the one whom thousands of citizens look to fort he answers & help during a mysterious disaster.

The totally awesome cast portrays very believable characters in strained relationships & tight friendships! It has action, humor, scares, intrigue, excellent FX, and it like SO authentically conveys the look, sounds & ambience of that place and era, fur shur! Some aspects remind me of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET, The Goonies, and Cloverfield!

The climactic ending did seem slightly abrupt, but it has a great emotional resolution, and you get to see the kids’ zombie movie during the end credits! I think it is among the year’s best movies, and I give it an A-, fur shur! So, that’s my recommendation, and now here is Nya-sensei to share her review of–

X-Men: First Class, fur shur!

Nyanko:

Arigato! I was impurressed by the purreviews  so I was looking forward to this latest X-Men movie, which was a good thing because I was a bit disappointed by X-Men 3 and the Wolverine movie, although those movies did have a few good scenes and the great actors!

Aside from this movie being a purrequel with mostly different actors purrtraying younger versions of the characters, I did not know much about the movie purrior to seeing it, but I was quite pleasantly surpurrised to discover that X-Men: First Class is not just a supurr hero movie but also a historical purriod piece!

It is set during 1962 so not only do you get those terrific fashions & style and the neat era of the technology — which Jenjen purrticularly drooled over, hee — but this purriod is signiciant due to the purranoia of the cold war, atomic fears, and the racial purrejudice countered by the civil rights movement, and all of these qualities are appurropurriate themes for the X-Men stories.

It is also a neat sort of homage I suppose, since the X-Men comic book was created in the early 1960’s! The movie also feels a bit like a 60’s spy movie. So was my optimistic outlook rewarded? Absolutely!

This movie is chock full of heroes & villains from the comics! There’s Xavier & Magneto shown at different ages and they have such a great bond & chemistry together. The heroes also include Mystique who is very sympathetic and shown at 3 ages. Little Mystique is so cute!

She is joined by Hank McCoy, Darwin, Havoc (although no mention of his brother Cyclops is made, but then no mention is made of Xavier’s Juggernaut brother either), Moira, Banshee, and Angel (not the bird winged Warren Worthington but a lovely insect winged girl), but she switches sides!

The Blackbird airplane does her wonderful heroic part too! The villains include Sebastian Shaw who is wonderfully purrtrayed by Kevin Bacon! . With him are Emma Frost, Riptide, and Azazel who is a lot like Nightcrawler. I much purrfurred Emma’s diamond FX in this movie to those in the Wolverine movie.

There are also the US and Russian governments amidst the Cuban Missile Crisis so we see a lot of the militaries & politicians. Oliver Platt is a CIA agent, Michael Ironside is a Navy Captain and ee do see a younger Stryker! There is also a quick cameo by Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and Rebecca Romjin who briefly appurrs as older Mystique!

Purresident Kennedy is in the movie too although I don’t recall the mewsial Marvel movie cameo by Stan Lee!  There are a lot of characters and sub plots including the origins. I thought the first two X-Men movies were fine but X-Men: First Class is my favorite of the series by far! I thought it was X-cellent!

I think the purrducers, writers, director, actors, designers and the whole movie crew did such a good job! There are certainly things in the movie that differ from the comics, but you can say that about the purrior X movies or just about any other movie based on a comic book.

I could quibble that Moira did not seem Scottish enough or that Banshee was not irish enough, or that Wolverine is too tall, but was so much about the movie felt right in the spurrit! The costumes, make up, sets, locations, lighting, photography, mecha, FX, stunts, sounds & mewsic were all very good, and the movie does have a big lavish look, with the global crisis and lots of supurr power combat!

One one paw the movie does seem a bit short & rushed, but it does not suffer from the “origin-itis” that can often plague a lot of these supurr hero introductions. It is never boring and so many of the scenes are fun, smart, warm, and thrilling!

I will give X-Men: First Class a high grade of ‘A-‘! This has been shaping up to be a good year for the supurr hero movies. Nyoka gave the Thor movie a high grade in last month’s Mew, we are hoping the Captain America movie will be good, and nyow here is Rica to purrsent her review of–

Green Lantern!

Rica:

I was also very much looking forward to this Green Lantern movie, which has a great cast of actors lead by Ryan Reynolds who visually looks like Hal stepped right out of the comics! Blake Lively is a lovely Carol Ferris who puts up with Hal and I hope if they make a sequel she will become the Star Sapphire!

Peter Sarsgaard was great as villain Dr. Hector Hammond- he and Hal have the good chemistry too. It is a stellar cast which is appurropurriate for such a galactic movie, including Angela Bassett as Dr Amanda Walker & Tim Robins as Hector’s dad Senator Hammond!

Taiki Waititi plays the part of Hal’s pal Tom, and Mark Strong purrtrays Sinestro of the Green Lantern Corps. We also meet lanterns Abin Sur, Tomar – Re, Killowog, the Guardians of Oa, and the main villain Purrallax. We see many other lanterns in some crowd scenes on Oa, which is fabulous looking although for soem reason it did not awe me quite as much as Asgard did in the Thor movie.

My favorite things about this movie are the costumed heroes, the best flying FX, lots of supurr powers & action, and so much intergalactic cosmic phenomenon in the gorgeous FX! The mewsic was purretty good too, the 3D was fine and at least there was none of the awful shakey cam, but unfortunately I had some purroblems with the movie.

The story felt extremely rushed & formulaic, purrdictable, oddly paced, and many of the scenes had a very disjointed connection. There was too much expurrsition about Oa & the Lanterns, which added to the rushed short feel. I would rather be shown and not told all that. I purrfurred it in Supurrman The Movie when we were actually shown all those scenes of Krypton & Smallville & Metropolis with much grandeur!

Although I could empathize with Hal’s delight over the new powers which would be so much fun to have, there was far too much emphasis on his fears, and yet for me there was not a good enough emotional attachment to the characters, although that is certainly not the fault of any of the actors.

For example, to further compurr it to Supurrman, when Hal makes his public costumed debut to rescue Carol from the crashing helicopter, it is not nearly as thrilling or emotional compurred to when Supurrman rescued Lois from the crashing helicopter in Supurrman The Movie.

I think this Green Lantern movie is better than Supurrman 2-4 & Returns, Supurrgirl, the Swamp Things and Joel Schumacher’s Batman movies, but it is not as good as Supurrman The Movie, Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies, or Red.

I enjoyed Thor and X-Men: First Class more, and I could compurr it to many other better or worse supurr hero movies but that could be a long chat! Oh oh and like Thor there is the tidbit after the end credits! Well thassabout it for my opinions, but we have more Green Lanterns coming right up as Jenjen starts this month’s–

DVD Reviews!

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights

Jeannie:

Arigato. Helping to whet our healthy appurrtites for the theatrical Green Lantern movie was this latest of the DC Universe original animated movie DVDs from Warner. It is an 84 minute animated anthology tale of the Green Lantern Corp available in several editions, but I have the single disk Region 1 NTSC standard DVD edition.

It is packaged in a no – frills package with just the disk in the plastic case.  The front cover art depicts heroic Hal Jordan before a Green collage of characters such as Laira, Sinestro, Killowog, Abin Sur, Tomar Re & the Guardians of Oa.

Purrceding the main menu are front – loaded purreview trailers for the live-action Green Lantern movie and All-Star Supurrman, and ads for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One DVD and for The Film Foundation. The main menu choices are Play, Languages, and Special Features, although much of those features are just ads & trailers, but there is a 10 min 45 sec sneak purreview for the forthcoming animated adaptation of Batman: Year One.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is rated PG due to the violence & language, purrsented in a widescreen dual- layer format with the spoken language & subtitle choices of English, French, Spanish, Portugues & Thai in Dolby Surround sound.

It was purrduced by Bruce Timm & Sam Register, Donald De Line, Greg Berlanti, Lauren Montgomery & co- purrducer Alan Burnett. It was written by Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim, Peter Tomasi, Dave Gibbons, Geoff Johns, Alan Burnett, Todd Casey & Eddie Berganza.

It was directed by Lauren Montgomery, Chris Berkeley & Jay Oliva; edited by Margaret Hou, with mewsic by Christopher Drake. Andrea Romano directs the voice cast starring Nathan Fillion as Hal, Jason Isaacs as Sinestro, Elisabeth Moss as Arisia, Henry Rollins as Killowog, Arnold Vosloo as Abin Sur and Kelly Hu as Laira, plus numerous others in the anthology’s five tales of the Green Lantern Corp and the framing sequence.

Unlike the Batman: Gotham Knight anthology DVD, all of these Green Lantern tales are in the same art style. The anthology is framed by the evacuation of Oa when Shadow Demons from an anti-matter universe attack through a rift in Oa’s sun.

They slay Green lantern Ardakian Trawl (who had such lovely ears & tail) and are feared to be a purrecursor  to the return of Krona, one of the universe’s most feared villains who created the anti-matter universe billions of years ago. As the Lanterns evacuate Oa, and monitor the sun from orbiting space stations, Hal tells purrky rookie Lantern Arisia a few tales of their fellow heroes.

The first tale is of the first Lanterns including Avra the scribe (voiced by Mitchell Whitfield), Wachet (voiced by Jane Singer) and Blu (voiced by Gwendoline Yeo) who try to stop a starship battle fleet. Blue had such purretty Blue skin & White hair.

The 2nd tale is of Deegan (voiced by Wade Williams) who was the drill sergeant who trained Killowog & Tomar Re (voiced by James Arnold Taylor), with a brief appurrance by Green Lantern Salaak.  Next is the tale of how Laira of a royal family became a Lantern and fought her brother Rubyn (David Kaufman) their father Kentor (Tony Amendola) & his mistress Ree’yu (Grey Delisle).

That tale has an appurrance by Green Lantern Galius Zed. Laira is a purrticularly fascinating character with lovely Red hair and numerous lovely fashions. The 4th tale is of how a cantankerous warrior Bolphuga the Unrelenting (Roddy Piper) sought to fight the Green Lantern named Mogo, which purroved rather futile as Mogo is a sentient planet.

There is time for one more tale, of Sinestro and Abin Sur’s battle with Atrocitus (Bruce Thomas) who purrophecized that Sinestro would one day betray the Corp. The horde of Shadow demons strikes again as their evil planet-sized master Krona emerges from the solar rift for a climactic cosmic battle with hundreds of Green Lanterns.

Briefly glimpsed are Lanterns Boodikka and Ch’p. This was a very entertaining collection of stories, with very good character & scenic designs, animation & FX, voice actors, sound & mewsic. The plots are interesting, but there is a fair amount of expurrsition, the pace seems a bit rushed, and like almost all of these DC animated movies, it seemed far too short.

However I would be interested in seeing more animated tales of the corp, because there are so many other great members of the Corp that could be purrofiled. I would especially like to see tales of Katma Tui, John, Kyle, Guy, Gnorrt, and related characters such as Jade, Alan Scott, Indigo-1 & the Star Sapphires. Nyow we shift the purrism from Green to Blue for Myayr’s review of–

Blue Crush 2

Mary Nyan:

Arigato, JennyJen! Aside from the dear topic of girls who aspire to surf, there’s not much of a connection to the purrior Blue Crush movie, and none of the characters or settings of that first movie are in this’un. This time the plot focuses on Dana (Sasha Jackson), a surfer girl from California growing up with her wealthy Daddy who misses her late surfer Mommy who passed away from Cancer, but had such wave riding hopes.

Dana grabs her Mommy’s journal and travels to beautiful South Africa to shred the waves of Jeffrey’s Bay. She quickly makes mew friends  and good times amongst a bohemian community of surfers including Tara (Sharni Vinson), Tim (Ben Milliken), Grant (Chris Fisher) and most importantly, the lovely delightful Pushy (Elizabeth Mathis).

It is not all righteous waves & good times though, because there is the drama of social class issues, crimes, an unfortunate home demolition, and her distraught Daddy’s frantic search. Nevertheless the movie has an abundance of surfing, sexy bodies & playful incidents in the beautiful wild locations!

Except for a few unpleasant bits of Hollywood drama and the techniques such as speed ramping, shakey cam, montages & too much slow-mo, this movie is a lot of fun with a fine cast, breathtaking wilderness & ocean scenes, cinematography, mewsic, a great sense of merry athletic camaraderie, and the surfing action.

Several real legendary surfers appurr in the movie either as themselves or as the surfing stunt doubles for the actors, such as Rosy Hodge, Tanika Hoffman, Laura Enever, and Sally Fitzgibbons just to name a few!

The DVD is available on standard DVD or Blu Ray, and in a combo pack with the first Blue Crush. I am reviewing the single disk R1 NTSC standard DVD edition, which is a no-frills package in the plastic case with a cardboard outer sleeve, but it has a good amount of special features on the disk! The PG-13 movie is 113 minutes long, purrsented in a 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio.

The language options are English, French & Spanish Dolby digital 5.1 audio with optional English SDH, French & Spanish subtitles. There is also an audio commentary track featuring director Greg Elliot, associate purrducer Greg Holstein, and actors Sasha Jackson, Elizabeth Mathis & Roger Halston!

Between that and the special features you can learn a great deal of how this movie was made. Those special features include an appurroximate 12.5 minute featurette on the making of the movie, an almost 6.5 minute featurette on filming in South Africa, and almost 7 minute featurette on the surfing scenes, each with over a dozen members of the cast & crew!

But wait- there’s more! There is a 3 minute gag reel full of flubbed lines, amewsing mishaps & silly moments; a 4 minute alternate version of the movie’s opening; a cute 2.5 minute Roxy purromo video with the neat La Femme song “Sur la Planche”; and 35 minutes worth of 10 deleted scenes, including the wacky “CG Crocodile Chase”!

This year has seen a good crop of surf girl movies between this and Soul Surfer – which as Niko mentioned we reviewed in May! I am looking forward to that on DVD too, and on that note, here is-

Our Mid – 2011 DVD Wish List!

Petra:

Here is our semi-annual list for titles we hope to be commercially released in the USA on Region One, NTSC Standard (not blu ray) DVD, nya!! We would like these movies & TV shows to be intact with the original music & songs, and the movies in anamorphic widescreen where applicable, nya. Foreign titles should be in their native language with English subtitles, but an English dubbed audio track would be fine as an additional option, nya!

Mielikki:

So like, the DVD packaging should not be too large, fancy or complicated as to drive up the price, damage the disks, or not easily fit on the shelves with the rest of our regular sized DVD cases & boxes! Although this list doesn’t tend to include recent theatrical releases that we’re pretty sure will be released, it does include foreign & domestic TV shows & movies that we’ve been waiting for!  Now here is Tara-chan to start the DVD wish list, with a few British & Australian titles!

Tara-chan:

Hai we are hoping for Doctor Who season 6, The Sarah Jane Chronicles Season 4, that new K-9 series, Ocean Girl, and more of H2O: Just Add Water, nya! There are also a few british mewsical & concerts we are hoping for, such as Kate Bush Live at Hammersmith Odeon, The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine and Let it Be, nya! Nyow here is onee-san to list American TV series we are hoping for, nya!

Yvonne:

The top 5 American TV series we want the most on standard DVD are Charlie’s Angels season 5, The 1966 Batman TV series, and WKRP in Cincinnati uncut with the original songs restored, nya!  We have been very happy thus far with the releases of The Bionic Woman seasons 1 & 2, and The Six Million Dollar Man season 1, so we hope that The Bionic Woman season 3, The Six Million Dollar Man seasons 2+ and the 3 bionic reunion movies will also be released, nya!

Nyanko:

Hai last year quite a few of the TV movies we craved were finally released on DVD so we hope the trend continues! We would like the two I Dream of Jeannie reunion movies, both of The Wild, Wild West reunion movies, and the Three Giilligan’s Island reunion movies! Other TV movies & specials we hope for include The Star Wars Holiday Special, Gene Roddenberry’s The Questor Tapes and Spectre, and that Hallmark version of Moby Dick starring Patrick Stewart!

Nyoka

Movies featuring the adventurous heroines we hope will be released on Region 1 DVD are The Touch (2002) starring Michelle Yeoh, T.A.G. The Assassination Game (1982) starring Linda Hamilton, the 1985 documentary Pumping Iron 2: The Women, and the 1977 animated Raggedy Anne and Andy movie! Nyow here is Myayr to list several Japanese animated movies we’d like!

Mary Nyan:

Arigato! The Japanese anime feature films we are most eager to get are Only Yesterday, I Can Hear the Ocean Waves, Flying Ghost Ship, Queen Millennia, Bagi, and Robot Carnival! We have been so happy with the release of the Ghost Sweeper Mikami TV series, and we hope that Ghost Sweeper Mikami movie will be issued on DVD too! Nyow here is Lizzy to continue our anime wishings, with a list of classic anime TV series OVA & mini series!

Elizabeth:

Hai, those include Campus Guardress, Rose of Versailles, Anne of Green Gables, Future Boy Conan, Hayao Miyazaki’s episodes of Lupin III, Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road, and the Space Cruiser Yamato TV series seasons 1-3 (in Japanese)!

Among the recent anime TV series we are hoping for include Magical Pokan (about a wolf girl, witch girl, robot girl & vamp girl), Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko (about an android girl minding a cafe in the future), Moyashimon (about an agriculture student who can see microbes), Chi’s Sweet Home (widdle kitty anime) and Sea Story (magickal girls from the ocean)! Take it Nico!

Nico:

Hai! We are also interested in Sketchbook, Blessing of the Campanella, Omamori Himari, Asobi Ni Iku Yo, Neko Mayoi Overrun, Yumekui Merry, and Stratos Four Advance! Nyow here is Jenjen with a list of live-action Japanese movies we want!

Jeannie:

The top three live-action Japanese feature films we crave the most for an R1 NTSC standard DVD release, hopefully in their original uncut versions in Japanese language with English subtitles are 1984’s Godzilla Returns (as opposed to the 1985 American version), 1989’s Godzilla Vs Biollante, and the 2010’s Space Battleship Yamato movie. Another live-action foreign film (European) we’re also keen on seeing is 2009’s Soloman Kane.

Mike:

Thanks Jen! Ah, finally to conclude the mid-2011 edition of our DVD wish list, there are a couple of outstanding fan film series on the internet that we greatly admire: the Star Trek The New Voyages / Phase II series, and the Star Wars Pink Five series! We wish there could be some sort of legal distribution arrangement for them to be sold on DVD!
