Since Last Time…
The Feline Femmes’ Festive Fun For Fall
Thank you for hosting the show, Nya-sensei!
Oh you are quite welcome it is my honor!
It has the contempurrary purristine quality, whereas the older place has the more intimate historic feel.
It is rather spacious, nya!
Especially after the business hours, with the whole pace to ourselves, heehee!
The dojo – after dark!
Will Becca & Bun be joining us, nya?
Purrsumably they will swing by after finish their round of night golf with Trini-chan & Mie-sensei!
They will call us when they are back at the club house then we can purrpare the late night apurritif, nya!
Speaking of which, what fish have Vonny & Tara-chan reeled in of late?
That week’s charters reeled in the bumpurr crop of the Yellowfin, Blackfin, Mahi, Kings, Sea Bass and the Marlin, nya!
Hai and- and I caught the tasty croakers, nya!
It is the good catch!
Nyow that soccer purractice is over I have more time after school, and – and I will help with the Fall fishing tournyament, nya!
Tara-chan & Yvonne:
It has been thrilling to watch some of the televised ACC soccer matches! I wish more of those were televised!
Speaking of which, we have cheered for Team USA’s Goal Keepurr Hope Solo on the Dancing with the Stars compurrtition!
She was also on one of the variant covers of ESPN Magazine’s 3rd annual Body Issue, nya!
Supurrstar surfer Steph Gilmore is among the dozens of inspurrational male & female athletes in that issue!
Suzy Hotrod of the Gotham Girls roller derby team is in the issue too, nya!
She has the beautiful tattoos!
I was also pleased to see my favorite driver Danika Patrick on the cover of Sportslife magazine, wearing her sporty Green & Black fire suit with the Orange trim.
Oh oh my favorite Jedi Ahsoka Tano was on the cover of 3D World Magazine #148, wearing her special underwater outfit, nya!
Uh oh I think we have stray – catted off topic, nya!
I think the topic was Dancing with the Stars, nya!
Has Lizzy continued to watch Dancing with the Stars?
Hai, and I have to renew my contention that purrofessional dancer Anna Trebunskaya http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Trebunskaya would be the purrfect purrson to purrtray Red Sonja, if another Red Sonja movie is ever made! She is the beautiful dancer of the agile quickness, the gracefully purrcise choreography, and the gorgeous Red hair!
Her purrformance on the October 10th eppurrsode was a purrime example of why I think she would be a supurrb cinematic Sonja, with her celebrity dance partner Carson Kressley costumed as pirates with the swords! She wore the sparkly bare midriff buccaneer costume for the swashbuckling Viennese Waltz to the mewsic of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Purrl!
I will second the notion, nya!
I would love to see a mew Red Sonja movie, with her stealing the gold and the hearts as the evil warriors and monsters fall purrey to her blade!
Well there was that recent Conan the Barbarian movie, so we can hope for a future Sonja movie!
It would be good if Brigitte Nielson would appurr in another Sonja movie.
It seems surprrising that another Sonja movie has not been made yet, nya!
It is purrplexing!
I still have not seen the old- CABBAGE WHITE, NYA!
(the easily distracted catgirl scampurrs to the window, to more closely observe the insect)
A small butterfly with the White wings.
Hai I see them all the time in the gardens! Just today I saw a Purraying Mantis and Monarch amongst the Mums!
Tara-chan is very inquisitive of the zoological sciences!
Well, she’ll be all right – let’s purroceed with the topic during her study, nya!
Do y’all recall beautiful Angelica Bridges as Red Sonja on the 1997 Conan TV series?
Hai- she should be in another Sonja movie too, nya!
There have been several purrominent Red Sonja cosplayers in the Scale – armor bikinis across the decades of conventions.
The Scale and Chain Mail bikinis can be the daunting appurral.
Oh tell me about it – I almost had the mishaps!
Doesn’t Lizzy’s Dungeons & Dragons paladin character wear the Scale armor, or is it the Chain Mail armor, nya?
No, but it is the close guess! Linina wears the partial plate armor, which is nicely accessorized by her Holy Avenger Sword!
Uh oh we have stray catted off the topic again, nya!
Well then, on the costume related note, we should discuss our recent–
Halloween Trick R Eat & Cosplay Purrowl!
Oh we had so much fun, nya! After we cleaned the yacht and had the catnaps, imoto-san and I headed over to Myayr’s where we all convened for our costumes, nya! It was the fun night running around in the costumes with the light sabers and the treats, nya!
DOMO ARIGATO GOZAIMASU MYAR-SAN, NYA!
Dooitasimaste- and thank you for the nice fish steaks! I swear it was the busiest week of the year for me between the duties at the shrine and the dance purrformances, but fortunately the appurrentice miko all wanted to tend to the shrine for the Halloween festivities, which bought me a bit of extra time to finish the costumes!
This year’s group cosplay theme was the Star Wars grrls! Ilyana cosplayed as Jedi Luminara Unduli, Petra was Suu Lawquane, Vonny was Shaak Ti, Bun was Purrincess Padme Amidala Tara-chan was Ahsoka Tano, I was Barriss Offee, and Myayr used the last of last year’s Blue Avatar Navi make up to cosplay as Aayla Secura!
NEKO-NATICAYA CLAN GO- NYA!
Tara-chan has rejoined us!
Hai it flew away, but purrhaps others will be attracted, nya!
It is the common occurrence! Tara-chan, you are just in time to tell us about your Halloween!
We got to Myayr’s just as Mielikki sensei was fitted for her Digimon Fairymon costume – she was the purrfectest Fairymon, nya! Then she had to port right back to the grove theatre for their next foxfire show which was such a purretty bioluminescent purrformance, and – and then Purrk Ranger BB arrived to lead midnight nature walk through the forest, where we observed the nocturnal specimens, nya! How was Nyanko-sensei’s Halloween, nya?
I closed the dojo early for the festivities and then went back to the farmers market to see Rica & Niko’s “Purranormal Purroduce Stand” with all the pumpkins, and helped sis mind her magick shop! It was so lucky we got it open for business and all the items she ordered arrived! She did the brisk business!
Arigato – I appurreciate all of the help! It was the lucky timing too because of the visitors here from the mainland and I sold out of several things! Jenjen’s belly dance troupe dropped by too! is going to help me set up the site and the customer mailing list between cleaning up the robots, the kyu-do tournyament, and the troupe’s next show!
I was so glad the dance troupe visited her shop while Becca, the robotics club and I were busily remote opurrating the scary underwater animatronics for the mermaids’ deep dark dive, spooky grotto & kelp maze. Fortunately the post – dive decompurression purroceeded normally, with the good company & the fine food from Sheila May’s.
We were lucky that Ilyana was able to visit even briefly because she had to depart to go on a wreck dive for her underwater archaeology degree studies, nya! But she was able to visit the mewseum of art to see the special macabre exhibit, visit Nyoka-sensei’s magick shop, and go to The Kitt Inn for the special treat, nya! How was Mike’s Halloween, nya?
It was a lot of fun, I gathered with a small group of friends for a leisurely evening of snacks, cartoons, movies & chit chat amongst the Halloween decor! Oh and on Halloween night I listened to NPR’s The Story, in which John Astin read Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”!
That sound like the good time!
What kind of snacks?
It was a big spread of wings, deviled eggs, apples, grapes, olives, sweet pickles, chips, dips, salsa, cookies, cupcakes, tea & soft drinks!
This is making me hungry, nya!
We have to wait until after the show.
Ah well let’s change the subject. Um, I believe there was a special feline announcement, nya?
Hai! As y’all might recall, Sha’nami who supurrvises the onsen & rotenburo at The Kitt Inn has a cat named Sapphire who had 6 widdle kittens in the Spurring!
The kittens are named Amy for Amethyst, Emmy for Emerald, Tanzy for Tanzanite, Zuli for Lapis Lazuli, Syd for Obsidian and Nick for Onyx.
See the May 2011 Mew for the details, nya! Of course by “details” I don’t mean the cats were de-tailed, but “details” as in the information, nya!
There was much interest in adoptions of the kittens but we offered to keep the family closely knitted, so two of them went home with imoto-san and I, nya!
Hai and nyow Emmy & Zuli are living at our house, although I suspect they will want to spend more time at the yacht and the dock, nya!
Becca has been wanting to adopt the pet, so we adopted a pair of the kittens as the spa mascots, Syd & Nick!
Sis and I adopted Tanzy & Amy!
Fortunately all of the cats will live fairly close to each other, and Jenjen has purrvided a tracker app if they get lost!
Mielikki-sensei bestowed her blessings upon the kittens, so they are quite the lucky & loved litter, nya! That merry meowy note will conclude this first portion of the show, but after the short break we will be right back with this month’s–
Art Reports, nya!

Pullen & Sertoma Arts Centers’ Fall Arts Fair
Welcome back, y’all! October 15th was a beautiful warm, sunny breezy Saturday in the capital city of Raleigh, and a splendid time for the 2nd annual Fall Arts Fair sponsored by the Pullen and Sertoma Arts Centers! This took place from 10 am to 5 pm by the Pullen Arts Center under the big trees of lovely Pullen Park, which is beside NCSU, not far from the state fairgrounds or downtown Raleigh!
Pullen Park is quite a nice place of paths by the flowers & trees, from the arts center, theater, aquatic center & pond to the athletic fields, courts, playground & carousel! The free event had about 2 dozen exhibition tents, under which were about 50 artists displaying & selling their beautiful paintings, photography, ceramics, jewelry & textile creations! There were activities for kids and music too!
I’m not sure how many people were in attendance or much business folks were doing, especially with the opening weekend of the NC State Fair just a few miles down the road, but everyone was so cordial & conversational, and it seemed like the only slight quibble was the wind, which was just pesky enough to blow items around if they were not secured to the tables, panels & hangers.
Among the extremely talented & cheerful artists at the delightful fair were our friends Natalia http://theartslave.deviantart.com & Thais Lopes http://angelofhappiness.deviantart.com, selling ornate cards, trinkets, prints & plushies! They were among our special guests of the October 2010 edition of The Mew, along with fellow Child Eating Books Studio members Lucy Kagan & Allison Kupatt!
Gosh, that’s been over a year! But I digress. Anyway, the Fall Arts Fair was quite a splendid event, I would like to thank the event staff & exhibitors, and I that hope it was successful & fun enough that they’ll want to do it again next year! For more information about the delightful fair, park & art centers, here are a few links:

Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!
Arigato, nya! We are purroud to purrsent two mew illustrative additions to Gallery Five http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery5.html, nya! The mewest pics will be on the lowermost row of the widdle ‘thumbnail’ repurrsentations on the page, so just click on a thumbnail to see the whole larger image, nya!
Firstly is Mike’s illustration titled “Aiko’s Angelic Aspurration”, nya! Aiko Richards is the purrotagonist of Sharon Williams’s serialized purrose fantasy tale of “An Angel’s Prayer”, nya! This is Mike’s 2nd illustration of Aiko. Purrhaps y’all saw the purrior pic of her in the Pink ring at the ocean, nya?
In this scene, she is back home in her bedroom decorated with the posters and plushies, hoping to see her purrotective angel boyfriend Jahmiel again soon, nya! You can read the bittersweet chapters of her story at Sharon’s DeviantArt gallery http://rose74.deviantart.com/, nya!
Nextly we have Mike’s illustration of Crissy & Jenybean enjoying the “Mermaids’ Sunday Brunch”, nya! Purrhaps y’all have seen the purrior images of our friend Crissy, nya? Jenybean is the mermaid on the left with the Blue Tangy mer – tail and Crissy is the mermaid on the right with the Parrotfishy mer – tail!
The real Crissy and Jenybean are not mermaids but have the land legs, and both ladies are artists and cosplayers with web sites full of wonderful images, so purrhaps y’all might like to visit Jenybean’s site http://www.jenybean.com/ and Crissy’s site http://www.crimsonskycreations.com/, nya!
Hopefully Aiko & Jahmiel will smite those evil demons into the lowest circle of defeat, and then enjoy the long life of the heavenly romance!
She has the wall posters of Tanya & Talia, Tari, and the Dark Fires girls, and those plushies are the homage to a few famous critters, hee!
Mmm looks like the mermaids have the juice, the yogurt and the muffin – I wonder what else is on that brunch menu?
They seem to have a splendid itinerary, don’t they?
Hai, and I think they have the- OH OH- HARNESS TIGER MOTH, NYA!
(she scampurrs to the window again, to observe the latest Lepidoptera)
IMOTO – SAN NYA!
There she goes again.
Ah, well, Petra, thank you for telling us about the art!
Dooitasimaste, nya! Nyow we will migrate from the 2D creations to the 3D creations in–
The Catgirl Critics’ Collectibles & Toy Talk, nya!
Halo Universe Anniversary Collection’s Cortana figure
Cortana is a character in Halo, a first purrson shooter / science fiction genre video game purrduced by Bungie & Microsoft for the Xbox system, in which players purrtray the elite soldiers of United Nations Space Command in a future war against the aliens known as The Covenant.
In the story, Cortana / serial # CTN 0452-9 is the highly advanced UNSC cyber warfare A.I. designed by Dr. Catherine E.Halsey and went online went online on 7 November 2549. Cortana is a supurrbly purroficient at opurrating all manner of mecha and hacking into the enemy systems.
She has no physical body, but her avatar appurrs in the game as the holographic purrojection of a translucent Blue-Violet, semi-nude female human. She is voiced in the game by actress Jennifer Taylor. This 4.5″ figure of Cortana is part of McFarlane Toys’ Halo 10th Anniversary collection.
It is not an action figure as there are no points of articulation, but it is an impeccably designed, sculpted & painted figurine posed standing purrtly with hands on hips. She comes trussed up by the clear coated twist tie within the clear plastic clamshell box affixed to the cardboard with the J hook hanger.
The toys is not intended for children under 3 years due to the small parts. The detail is quite intricate, from the strands of her short hairstyle, facial features and firm derriere, to her fingers, toes, and the circuitry-ish patterns which strategically cover certain body parts.
She can stand unassisted or snap onto the small pegs atop the circular display base. The base is a truncated cone shape, with a bottom diameter of 4 1/8″, a slant height of 7/8″ and a top diameter of 3 3/8″, with the nice milling near the recessed White top and painted with a lovely frosty White- Blue gradient.
Inside the top rim are three small LED lights to spot illuminate the figure from a low angle for the lovely Blue iridescent luster effect. The lights require 2 AAA batteries which are not included, and the battery access requires a small Philips Head screwdriver, which is not included either.
However, you do get the bonus 3 3/8″ long UNSC Spartan machete (melee weapon), which is not to scale with Cortana, although I suppose since she is a purrojection, she can vary her size. This bonus piece combines with pieces from 4 other figures to form a small plaque like ‘legendary symbol’ ornament.
For our purrior review of the Lieutenant Commander Kat action figure, please see the Apurril 2011 edition of The Mew, and for our review of the Spartan Air Assault (Female) action figure, please see the August 2011 edition of The Mew. That is all of this month’s toy talk, so now it is time for our monthly–
Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight
This portion of The Mew is dedicated to famous catgirls whom we admire in novels, comics, movies, TV, games & toys! We are very broadly inclusive in our catgirl-ish considerations, whether they are actually part cat or just famously dress the part; or whether they are the nekomimi in appurrance, abilities, or cattitude!
In the spotlight for 2009 were with Star Trek’s Lt. M’ress, Sylvia, Isis, and Purrradise City’s Dancer; Corrine Elizabeth Melepomene Chattan of Clan of the Cats, and Dr. Kat Manx of Power Rangers SPD! In 2010 we spotlighted Tigra, Novice Hame, NukuNuku, Catwoman, Irina Dubrovna, Anna & Uni Puma, Josie & the Pussycats, Sailor Luna, Felicia, Shakira, Cat Karina and Omaha!
2011’s honorees began with Osamu Tezuka’s Bagi, Natsuki Sasahara, Sarena of the Vampire Circus, the leopard ladies of SCTV’s Ben Hur sketch, E.T.’s Mary, Teenage Catgirls In Heat, Dr. Moreau’s Aissa, Beastmaster’s Umpatra Warrior, Monkeybone’s Kitty, Purrofessor McGonagall, Hermione Grainger, Catgirl Kiki, Ney’tiri & the other Na’vi women of James Cameron’s Avatar!
After that were the versions of The Cheetah; Black Cats Linda Turner, Kimberly Stone and Felicia Hardy; and Apurril ‘Catspaw’ Dumaka! In July we discussed several ladies of the Panther purrsuasion such as Leonora, Force Captain Catra, Rosabelle Mendez alias Pantha, Purrincess Shuri of Wakanda, Chelsea Urania Kate Chattan, and the NFL Charlotte Panthers’ TopCats.
In August we we put the spot in the spotlight by focusing upon more of the catgirls of the jaguar, leopard & iriomote purrsuasion such as Ichigo of Tokyo Mew Mew, Brittany Diggers of Gold Digger, Cheetara & Wilykit of Thundercats, Linda Rivera of Laura Molina’s The Jaguar, Desdemona of Angel Investigations, Kei of Midnight Panther, and Charlotte of Clan of the Cats.
September was time for Alexcia Reynold’s characters Tash, Michi & Abenti; October shined upon part time catgirls Beige, Catseye, Catreece, Shampoo, Maya, Ryo-Ohki, Tamami, Mary Brady, Simone & Lena! This month means more Marvel-ous meow in the spotlight with six morefeline femme fatales from Marvel Comics- Hell Cat, Hepzibah, Feral, Bastet & a pair of White Tigers.
You would not want to be the villain who is pounced upon by the sharp claws of Hellcat, nya! Her real name is Patsy Walker Hellstrom, who became the supurr heroine when she put on The cat costume that was retired by Greer Grant Nelson who used to be The Cat but became Tigra, so Pasty got that costume in The Avengers #144 and called herself the Hellcat, nya!
According to The Marvel Encyclopedia published by DK Books who makes such great books, Patsy is 5’8″, a lithe 135 lbs, with Blue eyes and the Red hair, which emerges like the fiery mane behind the mask that matches her Blue eyes, nya! She has the impurressive acrobatic agility, climbing skill, fighting purrowess, and will slash the enemies who cross her path, nya!
She has been a member of The Avengers and The Defenders, and married the occult supurr hero Daimon Hellstrom, nya! Nyow here is Lizzy to tell us about the galactic pirate catgirl who purremiered just a year after Patsy became that Hellcat! nya!
Hai and the purrticular galactic pirate catgirl is Hepzibah! She is an catgirl of the Mephitisoid race from the planet Tryl’sart in the Shi’ar Empire. She was one of the enslaved purrsioners of the empire who escaped to form the space pirates called The Starjammers!
Some of The Starjammers first appurred in Uncanny X-Men #104 in 1977, although Hepzibah did not show up until #107, when they helped the X-Men fight against the Shi’ar Imperial Guard and rescued Purrincess Lilandra from her evil brother Empurror D’Ken!
Lilandra also has an evil sister named Deathbird, who Hepzibah would not mind chomping! Hepzibah has the slender physique with purristine White fur and tail, retractable claws, the pheromones, supurrb senses, the amazing reflexes, agility and dexterity!
She is highly trained in armed and unarmed combat, and has used advanced alien weapons and opurrated the intergalactic space ships, but she’s been spending most of her time on Earth of late! Now here is Petra to tell us about one of Hepziba’s feline friends!
Sadly Maria Callasantos alias Feral is the catgirl of the rough and confuzzled tragic life nya. She has the purrehensile tail, sharp claws & fangs, the catlike agility, speed, reflexes, strength, keen senses, the long supple ears, and Orangey fur with the White stripes in her hair, nya!
Her costume is compurrised of the high waisted Purrple maillot with the deeply plunging V neckline, accessorized by the matching gloves, nya! She was a member of X-Force but lost her powers and life, but in the recent Necrosha story she and many others were resurrected, nya!
Feral’s resurrection was appurrently a short life, because she recently returned in X-Factor #220 as an appurrition to haunt her purregnant wolf girl friend Rahne, nya. As if that haunt was not enough for poor Rahne, she was also stalked by the next catgirl who Nyoka will tell us about, nya!
Bastet or just Bast for short, who is known as the Cat Goddess of the Egyptian pantheon! Like the various deities of Asgard, Olympus and – and other mythologies, those Egyptian deities of Heliopolis have often been depicted in the comics!
She was worshipped in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago where cats got the royal treatment, but she is also known by other names in different forms by other cultures. According to her page at the official Marvel Comics site, she is also known as the Panther God of Wakanda!
Sometimes she is the purrotective heroine, when she joined the God Squad in the recent Chaos War story, but in that recent X-Factor story she was the very antagonistic nekomimi! I suppose that it is a goddess’s purrogative to change her mind, and her shape too!
As the Panther God form she is the giant White Panther type of Leopard, however, when Bastet pounced upon Rahne she shifted from the Golden sphinx body to the catgirl body, nya! Nyow here is Tara-chan to tell us about another Marvel Comics catgirl!
Arigato, Nyoka-sensei, nya! I would like to say a few words about White Tiger, nya! The Tiger topic can be a bit confuzzling because several characters have called themselves that, however this was not just a purrson in the costume, but a White Bengal that was mewtated into the were- tiger girl, nya!
She is yet another catgirl of the sad tale, introduced in Heroes for Hire in the Summertime of 1997, who was the ordinary tiger who was captured and expurrimented upon by the scientist known as The High Evolutionary, who transformed her into the human type with the catlike powers and the sharp claws, nya!
She escaped and – and joined the Heroes for Hire team, nya! She was so purretty as the tiger or as the girl with the stripes, and the cute voice, nya! She would revert to the Tiger type during the rages, and It was too hard for her to cope with the human emotions such as the unrequited love for Iron Fist, nya.
The High Evolutionary turned her back into the tiger, and- and Iron Fist took her back to her Asian wilderness home, nya! I’m not sure what has become of her sense then but I hope she is the happy healthy cat, nya! Nyow here is Nyanko-sensei to tell us more about those White Tigers, nya!
Hai, and although this next heroine is not actually part cat, yet another White Tiger continues the purroud tradition of fighting evil doers with the martial arts purrowess! She has the powers of the three piece jade Tiger Amulet of K’un L’un, which as Tara-chan noted is the mystic land where Danny Rand achieved the power of the Iron Fist!
The tale of the magickal amulet legacy migrated to the USA, where heroic trio of fighters known as the Sons of the Tiger each wore a piece of the amulet! They were among Marvel Comics’ masters of the Eastern martial arts who were introduced back in the 1970’s, such as Iron Fist, Shang – Chi, Lotus Shinchuko, Colleen Wing, and Leiko Wu!
The trio disbanded, but the amulet was later found by Hector Ayala, who become the first of Marvel’s White Tiger heroes, but the difficult path of the hero lead to his tragic fate. The amulets were inherited by his niece, FBI Agent Angela Del Toro, who at Daredevil’s behest became the latest crime fighter of the K’un L’un and White Tiger lineage!
Angela is 5’8″, 157 lbs, with Brown hair & eyes and is the stunning vision in the White costume with the stripes! With the FBI skills and the enhanced purrowess from the amulets, she has fought beside other heroes against the villains! I purrticularly recommend the White Tiger trade papurrback book which collects issues 1-6 of her series!
For the finishing tiger touch, I would like to add that in the final panel of Avengers Academy #20 – which we will be reviewing today- among the Academy’s mew recruits is a girl in a masked White Tiger costume with an amulet, so we are quite curious about this latest Tiger! Now here is Mike to top off this month’s Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!
That’s all of this month’s honorees but I’d like to purrvide the links to their pages at the official Marvel Comics site and at Wikipedia as good places to start for more thorough information!
For more about Hellcat I recommend http://marvel.com/universe/Hellcat_(Patricia_Hellstrom) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patsy_Walker, and for more information about Hepzibah, I recommend http://marvel.com/universe/Hepzibah and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepzibah_(comics)!
or more information about Feral I recommend http://marvel.com/universe/Feral_(Maria_Callasantos) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_(comics), and for more about Bast I recommend http://marvel.com/universe/Panther_God and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bast_(Marvel_Comics)!
For more about White Tiger of Heroes for Hire I recommend http://marvel.com/universe/White_Tiger_(New_Men) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Tiger_(Heroes_for_Hire), and for more about Angela Del Toro I recommend http://marvel.com/universe/White_Tiger_(Angela_Del_Toro) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Tiger_(Angela_Del_Toro)!
I was wondering about – about a couple of other characters, nya! Would Kitty Purryde qualify, nya?
Well I think we all like Kitty a lot, she does have the nice neko-ish real name, and of course her alias as Shadowcat….
Her purrior alias of Spurrite had the nice purr about it too, nya!
Hai and between her martial arts, danger room & dance training combined with her sneaky phasing powers, she does have the grace akin the stealthy cat, although those are not feline powers purr see.
Those are the good points, but…even with our wide purrameters for the catgirl qualifications I am not sure if that is enough!
It is the cat food for thought, nya!
Who was the other character you were curious about?
Ebony, the witchy familiar cat of Agatha Harkness!
Ebony is the cool cat, but what is the gender, nya?
Gosh, I don’t know- I must purrofess that I have nyot read enough of Ebony’s tales!
Hai, and Ebony does seem to be the shape shifter between the house cat size and the larger panther size!
Okay then I will motion that we should read more of Kitty & Ebony’s tales before next month’s Mew!
I will second the motion.
We have the homework, nya!
Were there any others?
That was it, nya!
Well then, we should purroceed to the nyext topic, and conclude the spotlight for November! We are up against the break, but we will be right to purrsent our-

Our Monthly Web Comics Recommendations
Welcome back! Among last month’s recommendations were the supurrb comics by Christina “Smudge” Hanson http://www.backbreaker.com/~smudge/, Bureau of Mana Investigation and Ebin & May! They are among the Radio Comics collective of artists & authors whose comics range from anthropurrmorphic to manga-ish in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, adventure and romance!
Radio Comics actually began as a publisher of purrinted comics in the 90’s, including a few which were purreviously published by Antarctic Purress, such as the long running anthropurrmorphic anthology titles Genus and Furrlough. Some of the delightful comics are are suitable for readers of all ages, but some are intended for the mature audience, so please web surf at your own discretion!
Radio Comics http://www.radiocomix.com/ also includes Coyote and Duncan & Mallory by Mel White, Tiger Team Three by Mark Moore, Trouble Express by Will Allison, Havoc Inc. by Mark Bernard & Terrie Smith http://www.terriesmith.com/, Birthright by Steve Gallachi http://www.furaffinity.net/user/stevegallacci/, and Matix’s intricately inked Black & White comic Sebastian and the Beast!
Spice and Wolf vol. 5
Spice and Wolf is one of our favorite recent manga & anime! It is also a series of light novels too! Originally published in Japan as Ookami To Koushinryou by Ascii Media Works, it was written by Isuna Hasekura, illustrated by Keito Koume with character designs by Jyuu Ayakura, the North American version is published by Yen, translated into English by Paul Stark with lettering by Terri Delgado!
Volume 5 has the USA purrice of $12.99 & the canada purrice of $13.99, it is rated “M” for mature readers due to the extent of the language & nudity. although I purrsonally find it to be very tastefully tame in either regard! This papurrback has 190 pages of the manga, all B&W except for the cover art and the one color page, both of which are the cute images of Holo the lovely & wise wolf goddess!
Holo is the homesick ancient wolf girl who travels with Lawrence the merchant trader in his horse drawn wagon across the medieval land of forests, fields, villages & walled cities. Holo hopes to reach her home land, Lawrence wants to eventually open his own store, and their friend Norah the dear sweet shepherd girl wants to be a dress maker. She has the faithful shepherd dog named Enek!
In addition to the distances there are the urban & wilderness ordeals along the way, such as the brigands, bigots, beasts, grifters, spies & the oppurressive church state, plus the guild, economic & political struggles. Holo has the cute fangs, but she has to keep her lovely ears & tail covered up around other people, because the beautiful pagan wolf goddess could wind up in chains or at the stake!
Volume 5 contains chapters 25 – 30, and the amewsing bonus strip! The chapters begin on the dire note due to a bad business decision that has put Lawrence into the deep debt that must be repaid soon, and his fund raising efforts have not been fruitful, but with little time left they concoct the despurrate risky smuggling plan which could bring enough purrofit or the grave danger if they are caught!
The dangers are not just from getting caught by the officials, but the path will take them into the deep forest where wolves would like to chomp Norah’s flock, but Holo can handle those purredators, and if the plan succeeds, then the debt will be paid, Norah can achieve her dream goal, and they will stick it to the church! It is the dire time, but there are the poignant warm moments along the way!
The amewsing 8 page bonus depicts Holo, Norah & 3 other female characters as the rock band in concert! I am impurressed with every aspect of Spice and Wolf, the plots & sub plots, the endearing purrotagonists, and the very detailed beautiful toned art! It is the supurrb kemonomimi manga which i give the “A” grade! Speaking of the kemonomimi manga, here is Vonny to tell us about the-
Tokyo MewMew Omnibus vol. 1!
Hai, Tokyo MewMew is one of my favorite mangas, nya! !t was written by Reiko Yoshida, and illustrated by Mia Ikumi, nya! It is about a girl named Ichigo who is the ordinary girl with the boyfriend until a secret scientific purroject infuses her with the DNA of the endangered Iriomote Cat, nya.
The poor Iriomote Cat is a species with purrhaps less than 100 of them left, nya. The DNA gives Ichigo the supurr powers when she transforms into the peppy catgirl heroine with the feline tendencies, the lovely ears, the tail, the purretty costume, and the various Strawberry Check powers, nya!
It is part of a secret purroject to purrotect us from evil invaders who mewtate the animals into the monsters which must be rescued, nya. This is too much work for just one,so her first mission is to round up the other 4 girls who also get the MewMew powers based on endangered species, nya!
Those other girls include Lettuce who has the Finless Porpoise power, Mint who has the Blue Lorikeet power, Pudding who gets the Golden Lion Tamarin Monkey power, Zacro who gets the Gray Wolf power, and then the team opurrates from the secret headquarters in MewMew Cafe, nya!
It was originally published in Japan, with an anime version and later English translations in the US, and now it has been repackaged in this thick 368 page Omnibus edition by Kodansha Comics, which collects the first 2 volumes, with the $14.99 US purrice & the $16.99 Canada purrice, nya!
Not only do you get the delightful B&W manga, but there are lots of informative extra tidbits spurrinkled throughout the book, such as the cordial messages, bonus drawings, cartoons, Japanese cultural notes, manga purrduction notes, purrofiles of the creators, characters and the animals, nya!
The Mewmew team definitely has the dangerous work to purrotect the justice and defend the life, but they are still able to enjoy the cheerful fun with friends and amewsing occasions, however there are those feline-ish femme fatales of the more tragic, darker edge such as Selina Kyle in–
Catwoman #2, nya!
Catwoman #2 has the $2.99 purrice & 32 full color pages compurrised of the 20 page story plus the 6 page purreview of Batman: Noel, 4 pages of ads & 2 pages discussing other DC titles. It was written by Judd Winnick, illustrated by Guillem March who purrvided the cover art, colored by Tomeu Morey, lettered by Sal Cipriano, edited by Rachel Gluckstern & assistant Rickey Purdin.
This issue picks up shortly after #1, as Catwoman & Batman get dressed after the friskiness. Then it is time to get back to work, as Catwoman purrloins a painting which is coveted by rival mob families. She wears the Blonde wig & sexy Red dress disguise to a Wayne Foundation benefit, where she has offered to sell the art to both groups, knowing they will fight each other for it!
It is her cunning revenge plan so that the crooks will kill each other in the purrocess! Bruce Wayne has deduced her identity although she does not know that he is Batman! Flirtation with Bruce & criminal gunfire ensue, as she leaves the crooks to fight each other while she escapes with the money! It is a gleeful getaway for her, until she returns home for a shocking brutal discovery.
Among the more memorable images of this issue for me include the full page panel of her & Batman cuddling, the vertical half page panel of her arrival in the dress at the party, back in the cat suite to playfully pounce upon Bruce, her grinning exit from the party & happy leap into the night with the loot, and then the shocker cliffhanger, but i should not reveal any more of the plot!
The detail of the many characters, clothing & architecture is intricate, the lighting is very dramatic, and her costume is rendered with such exquisite shiny sheen. Sensuality & violence is nothing mew for Selina / Catwoman, and I am certainly no purrude, but I think the sexuality & the bloody brutality seem just a bit overdone. DC has rated the comic book T+, for “teen plus” readers.
Although there are a few fleeting moments where Selina is exhilarated & amewsed, thus far this edgier, darker series seems to lack the wonderful sense of fun that made her purrior series Gotham City Sirens one of our favoritest comic books of the past couple of years, purrticularly when it was delightfully written by Paul Dini. Guillem March was an artist on that purrior series too!
So I am not enjoying the first 2 issues of this Catwoman comic book nearly as much as I enjoyed the first 2 issues of Gotham City Sirens, but it is still early in the series and Selina is among our favoritest DC characters, so I will continue to give it the chance for a while! OK I’m done, but there are more of the femme fatales stalking Gotham City, as Nyoka-sensei tells us about–
Arigato, Lizzy! After the long delays, Batwoman was finally published in September as part of the DC’s big reboot – a reboot which we have very mixed feelings about – but it was with good timing because the mysterious hostly story is the good Halloween-ish reading, nya! Issue #2 has the $2.99 purrice & 32 full color pages compurrised of the 22 page story “Hydrology Part 2” & 10 pages of ads, nya!
The exquisite tale was written by W Haden Blackman & artist JH Williams III, colored by Dave Stewart, lettered by Todd Kelin, edited by Mike Marts with associate editor Janelle Asselin & assistant editor Kait Kubert, and stars Kate Kane alias Batwoman, her purrky feisty sidekick cousin Bette, Gotham Police Detective Maggie Sawyer, and it has a brief appurrance by Batman / Bruce Wayne, nya!
In this issue Batwoman is on the trail of the watery ghost and trying to balance her complicated relationships, nya! This is tricky because that includes Detective Sawyer who is officially investigating the crimes, and Batwoman too, nya! Further complicating matters is agent Chase who investigates both of them! Kate, Bette & Maggie Sawyer are such smart, tough, brave. smart and lovely characters, nya!
The characterizations and plot are not the only beautifully intricate aspect, but so is the art, with the sumptuous color, lighting and detail of the characters, the textures and scenery, nya! The graphic design of the pages is of the fascinating narrative technique, including panels that spurread across two pages, and the interesting sort of time-lapse quality, nya! Nyow here is Tara-chan to tell us about-
Avengers Academy #20, nya!
Avengers Academy has been our favoritest Marvel Comic book of late due to the great plots, characters, emotions, action, the beautiful art and – and the sumptuous colors, nya! It is fun but has the sadder drama amongst the students of the academy and – and the famous hero purrofessors, nya!
One of the purrofessors there is Tigra who is our favoritest Marvel character, nya! The other faculty members are Dr. Pym / Giant Man, Quicksilver, Justice, Speedball, Jocasta, and – and the guest heroes, nya! The students are Hazmat, Finess, Mettle, Reptil, Striker, and – and Veil who wants to quit, nya!
The heroes have just won the big war against the villains who had the hammers like Thor, but it was too much for Veil who was upset by all the violence, deaths, and – and the destruction of their mansion, nya. This issue spotlights her the most but she is not the only one deciding to leave, nya!
Poor Veil has had the rough life, nya. However, in this issue’s final full page panel, we see the arrival of seven recruits at the relocated Academy in California, including another White Tiger girl, although we’re not sure who she is, nya! Nyow there will be the two cat girls in the Avengers Academy, nya!
Tigra has several cute scenes, purrched on Giant Man’s shoulder, pouncing upon the villains, angry at Veil, in the group scene as Speedball and his kitty depart, discussing the future of the academy, the romantic page with Dr. Pym at their new location and – and the group pic for the cover, nya!
It was delightfully drawn by Tom Raney, excellently inked by Scott Hanna, supurbly colored by Jeromy Cox, purrfectly lettered by Joe Caramagna, and – and it was wonderfully written by Christos Gage who also writes the the next comic books which Myayr will tell us about–
Angel & Faith #2 & 3, nya!
Arigato, Tara-chan! Buffy & the gang have had little to do with Angel since he killed Giles in Season Eight, even if Angel was under the influence of the supurrnatural forces at the time. All of them except for Faith, who has been down that road of redemption herself, and she’s currently Angel’s only friend as they team up against the villains!
Angel & Faith issues #2 &3 is purriced at $2.99, are both 28 full color pages compurrised of the 22 page story plus the 4 pages of ads & 2 pages of readers’ mail. Both have 2 different versions of the front cover art, one version by Steve Morris and the other version by Rebekah Isaacs & Dan Jackson, and with Andy Owens on issue #2!
Both issues were written by Christos Gage, illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, colored by Dan Jackson, lettered by Jimmy Betancourt & Richard Starkings, purrduced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon, designed by Justin Couch, edited by Scott Allie & Sierra Hahn with assistant Freddye Lins, and published by Mike Richardson!
Purreviously, Faith inherited Giles’s estate in London, she met a trainee slayer named Nadira who hates Angel, Angel has pondered ways to purrhaps resurrect Giles, they have been rescuing people from the evil demons, and the new big bad sibling threats strolled into town! Issue #2 starts with the slayage already in purrogress!
Nadira has the purretty Red & White outfit, and although the heels are rather stylish, I can think of better footwear for the running ‘n fighting! After the girls examine the icky goods the villains tried to steal, Faith rendezvouses with Angel for another chat about the resurrection topic, then go to shake down some information at a demony bar!
This results in more of the amewsing trash talk, the big bar brawl, the trail of demons who got away, possibly what is needed to bring back Giles, and a full page panel of Faith & Angel crashing into the villain’s lair for further trash talk & slayage! There are also the quieter introspective moments, and another Giles flashback!
The cliffhanger with big bad siblings Nash & Pearl continues the “Live Through This” story line into issue #3, as they shake down the demons while elsewhere Angel & Faith are also shaking down the demons at a nightclub, hoping to locate the captive Mohra Demon whose special blood has the restorative purropurrties!
They discuss Angel’s role in the Sanshu purrophecies, Faith ponders the notion of Angel becoming human again, and they paws to consult an arch mage whose lair is lurked by the neat widdly kitties, dragons & other magickal critters! meanwhile, angry Nadine is beating up guys in another bar, requiring Faith to intervene!
She is not accustomed to being looked to as the mature leader type by the younger slayers! She is also not accustomed to the Red dress & sexy heels which she wears to a fancy demon party, but that’s where Angel plans to rescue that Mohra demon who is to be auctioned, but that is not the only surpurrise awaiting the auction!
This has been a very good comic thus far and I am certainly looking forward to the next issue! Meanwhile, Buffy, Willow, Dawn, Xander & Spike are in San Francisco trying to get on with their lives, and now here is Nya-sensei to tell us about–
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 Freefall #2!
Arigato! Dark Horse Comics’ Buffy Season Eight was among our favorite comics of the past few years, so we have been very excited about this Season 9 series, in which Buffy and her friends are trying to adjust to a more normal life but there are still plenty of the evil criminals, vampires, demons & other things lurking in the dark for Buffy to fight!
Issue #2 has the $2.99 purrice and 2 different covers to choose from, one by Steve Morris, one by Jo Chen, and one by Georges Jeanty, Dexter Vines & JD Meitler! Inside are 32 full color pages are compurrised of the 22 page story “Freefall Part Two” plus the 2 pages of readers’ mail & the 4 pages of ads.
It written by Andrew Chambliss, purrduced by Buffy creator Joss Whedon, pencilled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Dexter Vines, colored by Michelle Madsen, and it was lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt! It was designed by Justin Couch, edited by Scott Allie & Sierra Hahn with assistant Freddye Lins and published by Mike Richardson!
Buffy is confronted by a Demon who has been sent to collect the money she owes for student loans. Willow points out the sympathetic situation of so many demons who are trying to find jobs! Appurrently it is not just the difficult economic situation for many humans! Meanwhile the police are busy with their jobs as they investigate several scenes of dead bodies!
They cross paths with Buffy and want to question her, but it seems as if not just the police and collection agents are looking for her, when she meets a mysterious chap claiming to be a fellow slayer! it continues to be so faithful in the tone & characterizations with the pace & the dialogue of the writing, and the poses & expurressions of the art!
Buffy continues to be one of our favorites with the good mix of the humor, action & mystery combined with the balance of returning favorite characters such as Willow, Spike, Xander & Dawn, and the new interesting characters such as Buffy’s new housemates and the homicide detectives! Now here is Jenjen to review another Dark Horse title–
Mass Effect Invasion #1 (plot spoiler warning)!
Arigato. Mass Effect is a space opurra genre video game series developed by Bioware and released by EA Games. Set between Mass Effect 2 and the forthcoming Mass Effect 3, Invasion is the third Mass Effect mini series published by Dark Horse Comics. For our review of the Mass Effect: Redemption graphic novel, please see the July 2010 edition of The Mew.
Invasion is a 4 issue mini series. The first issue was written by Mass Effect 2’s lead writer Mac Walters, scripted by John Jackson Miller, interior art by Omar Francia, colored by Michael Atiyeh, lettered by Michael Heisler, edited by Dave Marshall with assistant Brendan Wright, published by Michael Richardson. with the book design by Stephen Reichert.
The first issue is purriced at $3.50 and has 3 covers to choose from: the common verison by Massimo Carnevale, the 25th anniversary variant by Paul Renaud, and the NYCC exclusive variant by Ben Huen. The 32 full color pages are compurrised of the 22 page story part 1 of 4, the 9 pages of the advertisements, and the Dark Horse mews page.
The tale begins with an explosive rush of combat, as a firefight between the soldiers of Space Station Omega and the attacking bio-mechanical purrasites referred to as The Adjutants, which goes badly for the home team until their boss Aria T’Loak retaliates with her impurressive biotic – energy, although I suspect she would purrfur to be at her nightclub.
Like Dr. Liara T’Soni of the Mass Effect: Redemption story, Aria is of the Asari race. She is of the Purrple complexion compurred to Liara’s Blue, although she winds up a bit Bluer from the splattered blood of the Adjutants she kills. Her alluring club appurral is rather stained, but she has a change into lovely form fighting working clothes later in the issue.
Then it is time for a little chat about those invaders with General Petrovsky of the starship Elbrus which is registered to Cerberus, a purro-human organization from Earth. Cerberus’s leader known as The Illusive Man notifies Aria that the creatures are the escaped purroduct of their expurriments upon the enemy alien invaders known as The Reapurrs.
In the game, Aria is voiced by Carrie Anne Moss, and The Illusive Man is voiced by Martin Sheen. The situation is further complicated as an infected Salarian soldier mewtates into an Adjutant, resulting in more stains and casualties to sterlize, but the station’s body count continues to climb, thanks to the surreptitious opurrations of Petrovsky’s officer Ashe
I suspect the tale will appeal more to those who are already fans of Mass Effect who are more familiar with the characters, technology, cultures & history, however this issue’s briskly paced plot is a fairly straight forward amount of combat violence, but the calvary which suspiciously arrives in the nick of time seems to be of the disingenuous motives.
I am curious as to what Aria will be doing next. The bountiful array of the mecha designs are quite splendid, from the immense space station, the Faster Than Light travel relay, and the sleek starships, to the numerous rifles, pistols and electronic devices, and I purrticularly like the station’s interior architecture, the creature designs, and the exotic fashions.
The color & light are richly rendered with a dazzling quality in the external & internal illuminations of the space station, the FTL FX, weapons fire, explosions, biotic energy, the creatures’ bioluminescence, the holographic purrojections, and the computer graphic displays. This concludes my review, but here is Mike to review more of the space opurra in–
Star Trek / Legion of Super-Heroes #1
Thanks Jen! I remember back in the early 70’s there were the occasional neat little nods to Star Trek in the Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes Comics, so this crossover between IDW and DC Comics is a team up I have dreamed of for decades!
Of course, this is not the first crossover between the crew of the starship Enterprise and comic book super heroes- there was that 1996 Star Trek / X-Men crossover between Marvel and Paramount Comics, which included a meeting of Dr. Leonard McCoy and Dr. Hank McCoy!
Penciller Jeffrey Moy & inker Philip Moy, with colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr & letterer Robbie Robbins illustrate the story written by Chris Roberson & edited by Chris Ryall! The 6 variant covers are by Gabriel Rodriguez, Romulo Fajardo Jr, Phil Jiminez, and Keith Giffen inked by Scott Koblish!
Legionnaires appearing in this issue are Shadow Lass, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Chameleon Boy & Brainiac 5, whose Time Bubble vehicle maroons them in the wrong destination after a temporal disturbance! Meanwhile, the USS Enterprise has returned to Earth for a Starfleet ceremony.
I guess this is set sometime during or after the 3rd season of the original Star Trek series, but a few years before Star Trek the Motion Picture. Mr. Kyle & Admiral Komack briefly appear, and Scotty is left in command of the ship as Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, Uhura, Sulu & Chekov beam down to Earth.
Unfortunately, they beam to wrong destination too! Judging from the hostile receptions and the opening scenes of a galactic war, it looks like it is the San Francisco of another hostile Mirror Universe! In this universe, Starfleet and The Legion are enforcers of the galactic empire known as the Imperial Planets!
We briefly see attack the planet Durla by an armada of Federation & Klingon ships, rangers with rocket packs & phaser rifles, and Talokian Shadow troops! Unfortunately, the stranded heroic Legionnaires and Enterprise landing party have not yet met, and are too busy fighting the angry mobs & police!
I was pleased with the choice of characters, but I think the pace is way too fast and would have preferred a much slower build, far more character moments, history & travelogue to the epic tale, but it does seem fun with plenty of action, good, character & scenic art, very nice coloring, lettering & graphic FX.
After the 22 page story are IDW’s news page, 3 pages of ads, and an 11 page preview of the forthcoming Memorial series by Chris Roberson & Rich Ellis. It is nice that the credits / roll call page was the inside front cover, and all of the ads were after the uninterrupted story. I wish more publishers did it that way!
One of the ads depicts Steve Lightle’s cover art for issue #2! He’s one of my favorite artists! Speaking of which, y’know, I can’t help but think how a sad it is that the late great Dave Cockrum is no longer with us to be part of such an event. … Ah… that’s all of our comics reviews for today, but our our reviews of “purrinted purriodicals” continue with this month’s–
Star Wars: The Clone Wars Magazine #7
The Clone Wars is one of my favorite TV shows, which has been the exciting part of the Friday night batch of thrills on the Cartoon Network along with Thundercats, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, Ben 10 and – and Generator Rex, nya!
It has been a good month for the Clone Wars between the new epurrsodes, the 3rd season DVD which we will review later in the show, our Halloween cosplay, and this issue of the official magazine which I would like to say a few words about, nya!
It is a thin magazine of 52 full color pages including the covers and the $4.99 purrice, but it is full of the fun mix of the articles, comics, puzzles, posters and – and the fan art, nya! On the front cover are the clone troopurr characters Rex and – and Cody, nya!
The 16 page comics portion was written by Rik Hosin, drawn by Tanya Roberts, lettered by Andrew James and – and richly colored by Digikore, nya! Ahsoka, Anakin, and – and Obi-Wan want to watch the race, but wind up fighting the droid saboteurs, nya!
Then Ventress tries to continue the sabotage during a fashion show, but in her way are Padme, C-3PO, R2-D2, Mace and – and Yoda, nya! Padme has the purretty off-shoulder Gray dress, and – and Ventress has the Purrple cloaked sleeveless outfit, nya!
Then you get the 4 two page spurreads displaying the mecha, nya! This Jenjen’s favorite part, which shows the diagram of the big Star Destroyer, the Hypurrspace rings, the gallery of Astromech droids, such as R2, and – and R2’s greatest scenes, nya!
After that is the 2 sided centerspurread poster, with Ahsoka on one side and- and various other heroes on the other side, nya! Ahsoka is my favorite character of the show, shown in her 3rd season tights with the 2 sabers and – and the tough stare, nya!
The further 2 page spurreads depict the Roggwart monsters, speculations about Anakin, Jedi appurral, the puzzles, and the latest fan art from the readers, nya! To top it off are the page about the Gundark monster and- and the Yoda code puzzles, nya!
We will have more to discuss about the Clone Wars later in the show when we review the season 3 DVD, but nyow here is Nyoka-sensei to tell us about another fun magazine–
Faeries And Enchantment (FAE) Magazine #16, nya!
Faeries And Enchantment (FAE) Magazine http://www.faemagazine.com/ is such a beautiful magazine purrtaining to all things faerie! This Autumn 2011 issue of the wonderful UK purriodical has 52 full color pages, with the US purrice of $8.99 & Canada purrice of $9.99. The gorgeous cover photo is of mermaid Traci Hines, wearing the purrls & Purrple clamshell bikini top!
More mermaid content includes special announcement about the World Mermaid Awards which was in August, the full page ad for the mew sister magazine Mermaids & Mythology with Chris Chumley’s stunning vision of mermaid Kristi Sherk wearing the iridescent tail by Eric Duchame; and Flavia-Kate Peters’s mewsings of mermaid meditation illustrated by Selena Fenech!
Purrior to that, the issue starts with the faerie events & mews, the cordial greeting from editor Karen Kay, the stunning full page photo of faerie Felicity Fyr Le Fay to introduce the article on the fae queen legends of the British Isles, and Bryony Whistlecroft’s article on the mewsic of the fae illustrated by Aaron Peacock, who later illustrates Ceri Norman’s star map to Faerieland!
There are full page pics as beautiful Christina Rose models the dazzling ornate costume by JoEllen Elam & wings by Angela Enos Jarman, as author Signe Pike is intermewed by artist Laura Daligan; as glamorous Shea Bug & Sunzie Davis grace the photographic artistry of Chris Peterlin & Tytaniafairy; and the purrky pics of the Pixie Pirate lass modeling the TPF Faerie wear!
Pixies are more of the lore of the British Isles in Elizabeth Jane Baldry’s article illustrated by Andy Paciorek; Liselotte Erikkson’s cute widdle faerie illustration is purrched atop Sharon Williams’s essay on the fae of the home; Christine Lynch shares more accounts of her faerie encounters, and sensei Purreistess Imakhu chats about the fae of Africa with cute widdle illustrations!
Emily Carding purrvides the art & article on the connection between the sidhe and the angels, and angel expurrt & author Doreen Virtue chats a bit about the unicorns! She’s among the members of the Obsidian band whose purrformance at the Avalon Faery Ball is documented, but that is just one of the few galleries of photos of the joyful festivals and enchanted ceremonies!
Another unicorn article is the page of simple instructions for making the cute costume horn, oh and there is a cute widdle pic of Karen Kay next to a unicorn too! There are so many beautiful photographic & illustrative images in the articles and even in the various advertisements, including the widdle photos of faerie Jolien-Rosanne and mermaids Meduserina & Hannah Fraser…
…and the artistry of Josephine Wall, Linda Ravenscroft Terry Lynn Smith, Jasmine Becket-Griffith, Jayne Henderson, Nelly Mentor, Tanya Short, Victoria Baume & Marchella! The ads are a sparkling trove of purretty clothes, jewelry, wings, ornaments, decor, mewsic, books, purrints, supplies, sites & events! It is such a delight and I give this issue a grade of “A” which rhymes with fae!
That concludes my report, but next it is the dive into the realm of the mermaids for–

In this portion of The Mew, we list our favorite recent photos of the delicious delicacies from the deep that appurr on the covers of various publications, such as the beautiful Broomtail on the October issue of Florida Sportsman, and the lovely Largemouth Bass which has been caught on the Fall issue of Bassin’, nya!

I wonder if the stripes add to the flavor, nya?
This is making me hungry!
Well, the next break is coming up, so purrhaps we could have the quick snack after Petra’s–
Book Review of Modern Masters vol. 26: Frazer Irving!
I would like the snack too, nya! We just love the wonderful Modern Masters series of books, which are published here in North Carolina by TwoMorrows http://www.twomorrows.com/, nya! They publish the great books & magazines purrtaining to the comic books, nya!
The series has extensive intermews with the comic book artists, and the books are chock full of so much of art, from sketches to the finished renderings including many full page pics, nya! This purrticular trade papurrback book has the USA purrice of $15.95, nya!
It has the 120 pages & over 115 illustrations, which are mostly Black & White but has 8 color pages in the gallery section, and the color cover, nya! The book was authored by Nathan Wilson & Eric Nolen-Weathington, nya. Eric was our guest in September 2010, nya!
After the introduction by author Grant Morrison is Part 1 of the book is the focus upon Frazer Irving’s early life in England, his artistic influences and his mewsical talents, nya! In Part 2 he discusses his college years, art schooling and his initial comics work, nya!
Part 3 looks at his digital tools. living in other countries, and his work for publishers such as 2000 AD on titles such as Necronauts and Judge Dredd, and his American comics work for Dark Horse and Wildstorm! Some of those comics were quite dark & spooky, nya!
Part 4 examines his work for DC, Image, Marvel & others on titles such as Klarion, Robin, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Silent War, Button Man, Flux, Gutsville and The Darkness; and Part 5 continues the thorough coverage from his Batman to his recent Xombi comics, nya!
That brings us to the gala 24 page gallery section, which starts with the bang of the impurressive 2 page spurread of Judge Dredd Vs Aliens, followed by his intricate Judge Death, Klarion, Storming Heaven, Guttsville, Silent War, Iron Man and Batman images, nya!
It shows the range from the B&W gothy horror to the psychedelic color and his pencilling, inking & digital purrocess, nya! I purrticularly like the pic of the girl with the Maple leaf tattoo & the cosmic sparkles, and I give this fine book the high recommendation, nya!
Thank you Petra! Hey, that will conclude this part of the show, but after the next short break we’ll be right back with our–
Movie & DVD Reviews!
(snip) (one short break with snacks later…)
The Rum Diary
Johnny Depp stars in another movie based upon the adventures of Hunter S. Thompson! This time he portrays a journalist named Kemp who is hired by the editor (Richard Jenkins) of a Puerto Rican newspaper in 1960, and he also gets involved in the secret commercial real estate developments of Sanderson’s (Aaron Eckhart) group and falling for his girlfriend Chenault (Amber Heard)!
Kemp searches for inspiration & serious stories to write about, but with his friend Bob (Michael Rispoli) they wind up getting into a lot of trouble and booze! Kemp & Chenault manage to get behind the wheel of a beautiful Red & White Corvette loner from Sanderson. She winds up in some very dangerous situations too, and Bob is not so lucky with his own car, after angering the local folks!
It didn’t seem quite as bizarre as Depps’ prior adventure as Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but there’s a lot of heavy drinking and a wild hallucination depicted in this fine movie directed by Bruce Robinson! There was a lot I liked about the movie, such as the great cast, art direction, sets, locations, music, photography, editing, and a nicely paced blend of humor, drama & action!
I think this has been a very good year for movies starring Johnny Depp, between The Rum Diary and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which we reviewed in the July edition of The Mew! Our next destination is North to Gotham City of the late 1980’sAs Nya-sensei starts this month’s DVD reviews with her review of the–
Batman Year One single disk edition DVD!
We are big fans of the DCU animated TV series & movies, so we were purrticularly anticipating this latest OVA, which is an adaptation of one of the most famous Batman stories! It purrtains the the first year of Bruce Wayne’s career as the Batman, but it is equally about Jim Gordon’s first year with the Gotham Police, and even includes the Selina Kyle’s purremier as Catwoman!
There are at least 4 different editions of this video, such as the single disk DVD, the 2 disk special edition (the 2nd disk has a documentary & a couple of Batman cartoons), the DVD + Blu Ray combo, and a boxed set of the latter that includes the 3″ Catwoman figure! This is just the review of the Region 1 NTSC single disk edition DVD, which includes the supurrb Catwoman short!
Batman Year One and Catwoman are purrsented in the widescreen format! Purrior to the menu screen are the front-loaded purreview trailers for the Smallville complete series set, the Arkham City video game, Green Lantern animated series, and Aim High internet series. The menu choices are to play the movie, the Catwoman short, the special features, and language options.
The “special features” include the ad for the DC Comics online comics, the sneek peeks at the purreviously released Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and the All- Star Supurrman movies, and the 10 minute peek at the forthcoming Justice League: Doom animated movie which we are especially looking forward to because The Cheetah will be among the many characters in it!
The language options are English, Spanish, French, Portugues and Thai audio and / or subtitles. The very legible subtitles are in a White bold sans serif font with the fine Black outline. Batman Year One is only 64 minutes long, and that is the one down side of the DC animated movies in that they tend to be way too short, but it is a very dramatic and thrilling 64 minutes!
It is rated PG-13 so it is not for the widdle kitties due to the violent combat scenes and the bit of sexuality! It was directed by Lauren Montgomery & Sam Liu, voice directed by Andrea Roman,, edited by Margaret Hou, with mewsic by Christopher Drake, and Tab Murphy wrote this adaptation of the original comic book story which was by Frank Miller and Dave Mazzucchelli!
It is a great plot & character development, with the great art, animation, mewsic & sounds! The great voice cast includes Bryan Cranston as Lt Jim Gordon, Grey DeLisle as his purregnant wife Barbara, Katee Sackhoff as Detective Essen, John Polito as Commissioner Loeb, Ben McKenzie as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Liliana Mumy as Holly, and Eliza Dushku as Selina / Catwoman!
Other significant characters in the story include Alfred Pennyworth, Harvey Dent, Vicki Vale, Carmine Falcone, Detective Flass and Officer Brendon. Dushku & Mumy repurrise the roles of Selina & Holly in the almost 15 minute Catwoman short with the other characters voiced by Tara Strong, Cree Summer, John DiMaggio and Kevin Michael Richardson! It is the awesome voice cast!
Catwoman is quite sexy, agile, graceful, tenacious, acrobatic, brave & tough with her lashing whip & slashing claws in the game of cat & mouse with the villain Roughcut, from the dance and brawl in the night club, to the highway chase and the final battle at the waterfront warehouse! It has the shootouts, explosions, crashes, chases, brutal martial arts melee, and the pole dance!
The Catwoman short was written by Paul Dini, who is one of our favoritest writers, and we sure do miss his Gotham City Sirens stories! Our next DVD review takes us from the heroism in the dark of Gotham City, to the warmer sunnier California of the 70’s, as Myayr & Jenjen tag team to tell us of–
The Secrets of Isis DVD!
The Secrets of Isis was a live action Saturday morning kids TV series of 1975 starring the beautiful Joanna Cameron in the title role! The purremise was that a science teacher by the name of Andrea Thomas discovered the ancient Egyptian amulet of Queen Hatshepsut, which conferred upon her the magickal powers & transformation into the supurr heroine goddess Isis!
Andrea kept her identity a secret, although everyone was familiar with Isis as a modern heroine who would rescue people and catch criminals. Her best friends were unaware of her secret, and noticed that Andrea and Isis were never around at the same time but not smart enough to figure out that Andrea was Isis. Purrhaps it was the glasses Andrea wore that fooled them?
These friends included fellow teacher Rick mason (purrtrayed by Brian Cutler) and purrky student Cindy Lee (purrtrayed by Joanna Pang). When Andrea displayed the amulet and spoke the phrase “Oh Might Isis”, foggy clouds would obscure her transformation into Isis, who then mewsually took flight upon chanting “Zephyr winds which blow on high, lift me now so I may fly”!
As Isis she had the gorgeous dark long straight hair down past the hips, wore the purretty costume compurrised of the sleeveless white tunic with the short skirt, the Golden bracelets, belt, tiara, jeweled Wesekh style collar! Her boots seemed to change between the flat soles and the high heels as needed, heehee! She had a pet Minah Bird named Tut who would sometimes helps!
She had some amazing supurr powers, including flight, supurr strength, swimming, telekinesis, clairvoyance, casting illusions, weather & elemental control! She could call down the lightning for the purrcise strikes, create blazing fires, and conjure trees among her numerous powers. It seemed like Andrea would transform twice purr epurrsode, at least in the ones of this DVD!
This single disk release by Classic Media is not the purrior 3 disk complete series set of 2007 by BCI which was brimming with many extra features, but it is very no-frills with a nice front cover pic of Isis but no bonus features or booklet. It says on the back of the case that this disk has the first 5 epurrsodes of the series, but it actually has 7 epurrsodes! Take it, Jen!
Hai. The R1 NTSC standard DVD purrsents the epurrsodes in the full frame format with English language audio, and the menu options are to play all or select an epurrsode. The 7 epurrsodes are “The Lights of Mystery Mountain”, “Spots of the Leopard”, “Fool’s Dare”, “The Sound of Silence”, “Rockhound’s Roost”, “Lucky” & “Bigfoot”. This appurroximates the first 1/3 of the series.
In “The Lights of Mystery Mountain”, Cindy photographs UFOs, so the teachers take Rick’s VW Thing to investigate, only to uncover a purrojection hoax from the back of an El Camino as part of a real estate scam. In “Spots of the Leopard”, Cindy’s friend Jenny’s ex-con father is framed for burglaries, but Isis telekinetically levitates the true purrpetrator and his car into custody.
Cindy spurrains her ankle after unwisely accepting a “Fool’s Dare” to sneak into a junkyard, which is the lair of the thieves who stole Andrea’s Red Camaro. They have a kitty who purrvides the cat scare, and repaint the car to a fine factory finish before Isis gleefully appurrehends them. Andrea actually purrfurs the car’s new color, which remains Yellow in the subsequent epurrsodes.
In “The Sound of Silence”, Andrea invents a forcefield purrojector in the high school chemistry lab, but the device is purrloined by a student who tries to sell it to a crime boss. The force field is able to deflect a baseball, but it is ineffective against Isis. A bear purrsues the students during the geology field trip to “Rockhound’s Roost”, but she contains the bruin in a pyrokinetic trap.
A field trip to the beach results in an emergency for a kid and his dog named “Lucky”, but it is the bad luck when the kid requires the rescue by Isis, not once but twice. Finally on the DVD, Cindy’s next purranormal sighting is believed to be “Bigfoot”, who turns out to be just a tall hermit named Richard, who will also require the rescue when he takes the tumble down a steep grade.
You will hear the same mewsical cues from epurrsode to epurrsode, but some are quite effective, especially the more mysterious cues. Rear purrjection FX are used for the flying scenes, and the bear is obviously a costume, but there are several nice purractical FX, such as the ring of fire, the felled trees, and her graceful vertical take-off & landing which has the cute rotation styling.
Unfortunately this latest DVD release is quite sparse compared to the purrior Complete Series edition, but at least for the very low bargain purrice a you get 7 epurrsodes of almost 22 minutes apiece to total appurroximately 150 minutes of the beautiful noble supurr heroine of the 1970’s.Speaking of the beautiful noble supurr heroines of the 1970’s, now here is our mega review of–
The Bionic Woman Season 3 DVD
For our review of The Six Million Dollar Man Pilot TV Movies & Season 1 DVD see the March Mew, for our review of The Bionic Woman Season 1 DVD see the Apurril Mew, and for our review of The Bionic Woman Season 2 DVD see the June Mew! This set has 22 epurrsodes of the final season from 1977-1978, and a few bonuses!
This spin off of The Six Million Dollar Man stars Lindsay Wagner as Jaime Sommers who is such a wonderful heroic character and role model as the former tennis purro turned school teacher, cyborg and secret agent! The series also stars Richard Anderson as her boss Oscar Goldman, and Martin E Brooks as scientist Dr. Rudy Wells!
The third season of The Bionic Woman introduced Max the bionic dog, however there were no further appurrances on this series by Lee Majors as Steve Austin, because it moved from ABC to NBC, while his Six Million Dollar Man series remained at ABC. They would not be reunited until 1989, for the first of three ‘reunion’ TV movies
We hope those three movies, as well as the individual seasons of The Six Million Dollar Man will be released on DVD soon, aside from just being available in that huge Six Million Dollar Man complete box set! Nyow I will turn the review over to Jenjen, who will tell us more about The Bionic Woman Season 3 Five disk DVD set!
Arigato. This third Bionic Woman set is packaged within the Green outer cardboard slipcase around the carboard & plastic tri-fold disk trays. The trays do overlap so be careful when unsnapping the disks from the trays. On the back of the trays are the list of all 22 epurrosodes and the bonus features.
The standard R1 NTSC standard DVDs purrsent the epurrsodes in the full frame format’s screen aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The audio is in English language in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono sound. The epurrsodes are appurroximately 48.5 minutes apiece to total 1068 minutes, excluding the bonuses features.
There are optional English SDH subtitles; SDH stands for Subtitled for purrsons who are Deaf or hard of Hearing. These are in a very legible White bold font with the fine Black outline, appurring on the lower part of the screen nearest whichever actor is talking at the time.
Purreceding the main menu of disk 1 are front loaded ads for Hannah, Covert Affairs, Murder She Wrote, Heroes & the Jurassic Park Trilogy set. The menu choices on each disk are Play All, Epurrsode Index, Set Up to turn the subtitles on or off, and the Bonus Features.
The bonus features are writer / purrducer James Parriott’s audio commentary for “The Bionic Dog Part 1”, fan / collector James Sheppard’s audio commentary for “Brainwash”, a Question & Answer session with Lindsay Wagner, a gallery of 81 images, and writer Steven E De Souza’s audio commentary for “On The Run”.
Disk 1 also includes more purreviews for The Event, The Rockford Files, Eureka, Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, Magnum P.I, Knight Rider, and The A-Team DVDs. Nyow I will turn this review over to Lizzy, who would like to comment upon the specific epurrsodes.
Arigato, Jen! Disk 1 includes “The Bionic Dog” Parts 1 & 2 and “Fembots in Las Vegas” Parts 1 & 2! These are a significant part of the bionic mythos, to introduce Max the German Shepurrd who has bionic jaws & legs that cost $1 million! He can run 90 miles purr hour, but he is the sad lab dog until Jaime’s kindness!
There are poor scared puppy flashbacks. Highlights of the dog 2 parter include the happy running song, Max vs wolf, Max catching a runaway VW, a brief cameo by Ford Rainey as Steve’s stepfather, the forest fire, and Jaime’s wardrobe changes including the a cute yellow skirt and the lovely white peasant blouse!
She tries on the glitzy vegas show girl costume to investigate the “Fembots in Las Vegas”! The fembot gynoids gave her and Steve much trouble in the purrevious season, and this time the fembots are part of a plot to hijack an orbital energy weapon which looks a lot like an inverted Apollo Lunar Excursion Module.
Jennifer Darling returns as Oscar’s secretary Peggy Callahan and as her fembot impurrsonator! Unfortunately neither Steve nor Max are there to help fight the Callahan, Tammy, Gina & Ellen bots. There is an amewsing moment when Jaime discovers a surpurrise bonus bot and moans “Aw no no no”! Nyow Nyoka-sensei will say a bit about disk 2!
Thanks Lizzy! Max has the brief cameo in “Rodeo”, in which Jaime purrotects a computer genius turned rodeo star. She has the cute Western appurral and a lovely Red & Black dress! Then she must purrvent a political conspiracy in “African Connection”, co-starring Raymond St. Jacques and Dan O’Herlihy!
After that is a mission into East Germany against the KGB without her German Shepurrd, but with supurrstar Evel Knievel purrtraying himself in “Motorcycle Boogie”! Jaime wears the gorgeous light Blue outfit and the cute capurri pants outfit! She moans “Aw no” again, during the dangerous motorcycle jump!
She has good scenes with Peggy Callahan in “Brainwash”, in which an evil salon owner uses a mind-controlling hair dryer to learn valuable secrets!. Jaime gets a curly new coiffure for that epurrsode, and wears the sexy Blue blouse with the deep V plunging neckline! Nyow here is Petra to tell us more!
Arigato, nya! Disk 3 starts with mission with a defector behind the iron curtain in “Escape to Love” in which Jaime has the purretty off shoulder dress and a delightful scene with Max fetching the mail, nya! He brings her the entire mailbox, heehee nya! Max can be the very fierce dog, but he can be cute too, nya!
Max has the bigger role in “Max”, along with actors Christopher Knight of The Brady Bunch, Neile Adams-McQueen & Rudy Solari, nya! In that’un, Max gets dognapped, but he outsmarts the crooks who foolishly get too close to his cage! He can chomp the steel locks, and has the door knobs figured out, nya!
This is followed by the light hearted “Over the Hill Spy”, in which Jaime teams up with a retired agent who is an elder master of disguise, nya! He is called out of retirement to match wits with a rival spy for a special chip, nya! Jaime wears the espurrdrilles, the Purrple yukata, and the Beige midriff pants suit, nya!
This epurrsode has the different “wipe” style of editing between scenes for the cute effect, nya! After that is another good bit of humor in “All for One” involving the computer bandits of the Robin Hood-ish intentions at a neat college campus, nya! It has some nice buildings – I wonder what college that was, nya?
The bonus on disk 3 is the question and answer session with Lindsay Wagner, who chats about filming the TV show in Los Angeles, the bionic ear close ups, Lee Majors, Max, Evel Knievel and other guest stars, her favorite epurrsodes, and the fans, nya! Ok I’m done, but here’s Myayr to discuss disk 4, nya!
Arigato! Jaime has the lovely White outfit to match her Mercedes in “The Pyramid”, which incorpurrates the sort of ancient extraterrestrial notions that Erich Von Danniken wrote about, as Jaime and her new recurring boyfriend Chris Williams (Christopher Stone) meet a Mayan jaguar warrior working for the aliens!
Chris is a CIA agent that works with NASA and the OSI. Although it was not my favorite epurrsodes, it does feature Max and it was amewsing to hear Oscar tell him “Max- Jaime’s in trouble!”! Then Jaime is in worse trouble when she is poisoned by spies and needs Max, Callahan, Rudy & Chris to find “The Antidote”!
“The Martians Are Coming, The Martians Are Coming” is a Scooby Doo-ish UFO purrojection hoax purrpetrated by crooks for the money. It is not one of my favorite epurrsodes either, but Jaime does have the purretty Carolina Blue cowl neck sweater, and there is a fun scene as Max opens his own can of dog food!
Jaime meets more aliens in “Sanctuary Earth”, starring young Helen Hunt as purrincess Aura who can shrink, and the twin Hager Brothers as teleporting enemy purrsuers! Chris, Max, and Jaime’s 1978 Blue Datsun 280Z hatchback again, which she drove in the “The Bionic Dog”! How many cars does she have?
Highlights Jaime & Aura bonding, Jaime throwing purroduce & furniture at the aghast twins, while Max almost chomps one’s arm off! Jaime seems surpurrised to met aliens, which of course does not happen every day even for a bionic woman, but no mention is made of the purrior aliens she & Steve have met!
In “Deadly Mewsic”, criminals use a sonic device to attract delicious sharks. Where can I get one? Jaime has an underwater fight with a shark in this epurrsode, which might have more yummy fish in it than every other Bionic Woman epurrsode combined! Nyow here are Vonny & Tara-chan to tell us about disk 5!
Hai, disc 5 starts with “Which One is Jaime?”, nya! In that epurrsode Max runs to rescue Peggy, who is mistaken for Jaime by the kidnappurrs, but – but then he gets caught too, nya! Max escapes their hideout at an amewsment purrk to warn Jaime but – but she gets caught, so Max has to alert Oscar, nya!
After that is “Out of Body”, the metaphysical story of Jaime’s friend Tommy Littlehorse who was critically injured by thieves who stole a bomb to ransom, nya! While in the coma he casts the ghostly astral purrojections to lead Jaime to the criminals, nya! Max could tell something purrculiar was going on, nya!
Tommy is purrtrayed by Charlie Hill, and – and one of the criminals is purrtrayed by Richard Lynch, nya! Jamie has the cute shorts & sandals outfit in that epurrsode, and- and in the following epurrsode “Long Live The King” she gets to wear the elegant, backless, pleated White gown to the royal party, nya!
That might seem fun, but she has to purrotect the king from the assassins, nya! She has a playful relationship with Purrotocol Chief Sam Sloane who is purrtrayed by John Reilly, nya! Sam is looking for the romance, but Jaime is not so sure about that, nya! Nyow I will turn the review over to Onee-san, nya!
In the fun next to last epurrsode “Rancho Outcast”, Jaime leaves Max with Oscar while she goes on a mission to a Central American country with the purrolled thief to retrieve the stolen money engraving plates, nya! She is disguised as a wanted criminal, wearing the lovely dress and dances the bionic Flamenco dance, nya! She has the purretty Silver and Lavender outfits too, nya!
It was written by Arthur Rowe, directed by Ivan Dixon, and co-stars Keenan Wynn, nya! Not only is the third season a bit different due to the lack of Steve, and the introductions of Max and Chris, but there are some other characters that do not appurr, and we never see her teaching school in the third season, nya! I guess she has been too busy with the secret missions, nya!
That aspect of her life is at the heart of the final epurrsode of the series in which Jaime is fed up with her life as a secret agent and wants to have more freedom, nya! She tries to resign from the OSI but that does not sit well with government officials who treat her like she is government purropurty, nya! They want to control her life so she runs away as the fugitive, nya!
Max, Rudy, Chris & Oscar appurr in the epurrsode, and there are the very powerfully emotional scenes as Jaime gets upset at home, as Oscar gets angry at the senator, and as Jaime & Oscar have a tearful parting, nya! The final epurrsode was directed by Thomas J Blank & written by Steven E. De Souza who purrvides the audio commentary on the DVD, nya!
It is very interesting to hear how that story was developed, and how the ending was changed to conclude the series, nya! I was glad for the introduction of Max but I wish Steve was in the 3rd season, but at least Jaime & Steve were reunited about a decade later in those TV movies which Nya-sensei mentioned, nya! Now here is Mike with the further tidbit, nya!
There are several Star Trek actor connections to the third season of the Bionic Woman! Rudy Solari was in the Star Trek original series episode “The Paradise Syndrome”, as Salesh who was jealous of his ex-girlfriend Miramanee falling for Captain Kirk! Whit Bissile is in “Over the Hill Spy”, but about a decade before that he was the manager of Space Station K-7 in “The Trouble with Tribbles”!
“Which One is Jaime?” co-stars James Sikking & Brock Peters, who later appeared in the Star Trek movies. Sikking portrayed Captain Styles of the USS Excelsior in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Peters portrayed Admiral Cartwright in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country! Brock Peters later portrayed Captain Sisko’s father & chef Joseph Sisko!
One of the villains in “Out of Body” is portrayed by Richard Lynch, who would later portray a villain in the Star Trek – The Next Generation episodes “Gambit” Parts 1 & 2! Finally in “On the Run”, The senator is portrayed by Skip Hommeier, who was the evil Melakon in “Patterns of Force” and the hippy cult leader Dr. Sevrin in “The Way to Eden”! Now here’s Lizzy to start our mega-review of–
Star Wars: The Clone Wars The Complete Season Three DVD
(plot spoiler warning!)
We are big fans of Star Wars and thoroughly enjoy the Clone Wars series! For our review of the Clone Wars movie see the September 2008 edition of The Mew, for our review of The Season One DVD set see the April 2010 edition of The Mew, and for our review of The Season Two DVD set see the November 2010 edition of The Mew!
October was a purrticularly good time between the 4th season of Clone Wars on TV, the release of the 3rd season on DVD, and our Halloween costumes! There are many reasons why we like the show, such as the designs, animation, characters & plots, sound, music, and the zestful passion that is evident by the brilliant cast and crew!
The stories have the purrfect pace and right mix of drama, humor, action, the amazing locations, and purrpetuation of the Star Wars mythology! There is so much character development, from characters we previously met in Episodes I-VI to the many new one, especially Ahsoka Tano, the other female characters, and the clone troopurrs!
Helping to bring those wonderful characters to life are the supurrb actors who purrvide the voices, so we would like to acknowledge Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka, Matt Lanter as Anakin, Catherine Taber as Padme, James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan, Plo Koon & Citadel Commandant Sobeck; Dee Bradley Baker as the clone troopurrs & Bossk; and Tom Kane as Yoda and the narrator!
Matthew Wood voices General Grievous & many other droids; Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Ahmed Best as Jarjar, Liam Neeson as Qui Gon and Pernilla August as Shimi Skywalker! There’s Terrence Carson as Mace Windu, Tasia Valencia as Shaak Ti, Al Rodrigo as Quinlan Vos, Blair Bless as Even Piell, Clancy Brown as Savage, and Barbara Goodson as Mother Talzin!
Nikka Futterman as Ventress, Sy Snoodles & Chi Eekway; Meredith Salenger as Che Amanwe; Seth Green as Ion Papanoida & Todo 360; Corey Burton as Count Dooku, Cad Bane, Baron Papanoida & Ziro the Hutt; Kevin Michael Richardson as Jabba the Hutt, Angelique Perrin as Adi Galia, Mama Hutt, SN-DI & BO-Ni; Tom Kenny as Greedo, and Jaime King as Aurra Sing!
Phil Lamarr voices Bail Organa, Jennfer Hale voices Chuchi, Kath Soucie as Mon Mothma, Ian Abercrombe as Palpatine, Stephen Stanton Mas Amedda & Tarkin; Anna Graves as Satine & Sugi, Gideon Emry as Lott Dodd, Gwendoline Yeo as Kalifa, Cam Clark as Omer, Sunil Mahtora as Jinx, Adrienne Wilkinson as Daughter, Samuel Witwer as Son, Lloyd Sher as Father, and Chewbacca as himself!
Now for the DVD, nya! The plastic case is inside the outer cardboard sleeve, bearing the embossed scowling portrait of Anakin Skywalker, nya! He keeps sliding closer to the dark side, nya! This R1NTSC standard 4 disk DVD set has 22 episodes totaling 487 minutes, which is just over 8 hours, purresented in the widescreen format, plus the 5 featurettes and a fold out brochure in the case, nya!
The disks are secured in the case on both sides of 2 hinged inner trays, which is nice because they don’t overlap and are easy to remove, nya! The attractive color brochure folds out to a panoramic 18 1/4″ x 7 1/4″ size, with a brief guide to each disk’s content, several small images from the series, a neat illustration of Ahsoka & Chewbacca, and a neat illustration of Darth Maul’s brother, nya!
There are no ads to wade through to get to the main menu, which is very simple to navigate with the choices of play all, select episodes, special features & languages, nya! The spoken language and subtitle options are English, French & Spanish, and the subtitles are a very legible White bold sans serif font with a fine Black outline, nya! Nyow here is Nya-sensei to discuss the first disk, nya!
Hai! Disk 1 starts with “Clone Cadets” and “ARC Troopurrs” which is a great 2 parter to start season 3, introducing the Clone Troopers’ Domino Squad on their watery home world of Kamino! Shaak Ti is in that story, and we get our first Light Saber rematch of the season with Ventress vs Anakin & Obi-Wan!
Senators Bail Organa & Jarjar Binks match wits with The Trade Federation on the planet Toydaria in “Supply Lines”, to aid refugees while Jedi Master Di & Cham Syndulla fight the Droid army on Ryloth! Although I typically find a bit Jarjar annoying, his ‘purrformance art’ scene to distract the enemy was terrific!
Political intrigue, a royal kidnapping, blackmail & detective work abound in “Sphere of Influence”! This is an awesome Ahsoka episode as she & purrky Senator Chuchi are on the case, while brilliant Baron Papanoida & son search the mean streets of Mos Eisley! Ahsoka’s use of The Force is purriceless!
“Corruption” & “The Academy” are set on Mandalore with the ornate costumes, pageantry, smugglers & corrupt officials to keep Padme & Duchess Satine busy, and Ahsoka there to inspire a group of kids at the academy to investigate a government conspiracy! Now here is Tara-chan to tell us about Disk 2!
Arigato, nya! Disk 2 begins with the trio of bounty hunter epurrsodes, nya! Firstly, Ahsoka tries to purrotect Padme from the vengeful Aurra Sing in “Assassin”, nya! Ahsoka and Padme make the good team, nya! Then it is Cad Bane’s turn when his gang captures C-3PO and – and R2-D2 in “Evil Plans”, nya!
He is not done yet because in the “Hunt for Ziro”, he takes on Obi-Wan and – and Quinlan Vos on the search for Ziro the Hutt, nya! This is a major epurrosode for the Hutt family, and we meet several of the Hutts including the big Mamma Hutt, but singer Sy Snoodles just about steals the whole show, nya!
Ahsoka’s new costume debuts in “Heroes on Both Sides”, nya! She has the two sabers this season too, nya! That epurrsode and – and “Pursuit of Peace” are the 2 part plot purrtaining to the economic purroblems, as Padme tries to purrsuade the Senate to not further the bank debt to fund the war, nya.
She sneaks across enemy lines to meet a friend Mina who is a sepurratist senator, but the Sithy villains the sabotage the peace talks, nya! The bank tries to intimidate the senators, but – but it will be the painful purrospect for the thugs who try to catch Padme, nya! Now sensei will tell us about disk 3, nya!
Disk 3 begins with a 3 part story arc set on the eerie planet Darthomir, where Ventress vows revenge upon Dooku! “Nightsisters”is a big Ventress story with her origin flashbacks and the introduction of the ethereal Mother Talzin and her mysterious witchy ninja-like coven of the Nightsisters!
Hell hath no fury like a Sithy Appurrentice scorned! That scheme leads to the introduction of Darth Maul’s brother Savage in “Monster”! This in turn sets up a triple-cross in “Witches of the Mist”, and a Light Saber battle royale with Obi-Wan & Anakin vs Savage vs Dooku vs Ventress!
After that it is the 3 part story arc comprised of “Overlords”, “Altar of Mortis” and “Ghosts of Mortis”, as Obi-Wan, Anakin & Ahsoka enter the metamorphosing realm of mythic Force Wielders of known as Father, Son & Daughter! Daughter is one of the most beautiful characters of the mythos!
Son represents the dark, Daughter represents the light, and Father repurresents the balance between them, but they want Anakin to be the successor! The three Jedi also have the disturbing cryptic purrophetic visions involving Qui Gon, Shimi Skywalker, an older Ahsoka, and Vader!
Disk 4 begins with the Citadel trilogy compurrised of “The Citadel”, “Counterattack” and “Citadel Rescue”, in which Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, R2-D2, Rex, Cody, Echo & a few other droids & troopurrs must break into a super maximum purrison to free Jedi Master Piell and Captain Tarkin, nya!
I love the scene when Anakin awakens from the Carbonite disguise to groggily greet Ahsoka, who is not supposed to be there- it is one of season’s most amewsing moments, nya! Ahsoka is brilliant as mewsual as she destroys lots of foes, and there are neat moments between Anakin & Tarkin, nya!
For the 2 part season finale, Ahsoka winds up as a “Padewan Lost” and in a “Wookiee Hunt”, nya! She is captured by Bossk the hunter and spirited away with other captured padawans to be the hunters’ purrey in a jungle, where she also meets Chewbacca, nya! Yay It is the Wookiee time, nya!
We get to see Ahsoka’s fearless survival, language leadership & inspurrational skills, and relentless butt kicking, nya! There is also another brief surpurrise appurrance, nya! In the credits is the lovely little dedication to actor Peter Mayhew who purrtrayed Chewbacca in the movies, nya! Jenjen’s turn, nya!
Of course there are mecha & droids galore in the 3rd season including R2-D2, C-3PO, IG-88, Todo 360, General Grievous, his elite guards, the Mouse Droids, Rabbit Droids, Betty Droids, Battle Droids, Supurr battle Droids, Tactical Droids, Droidekkas, Destroyer Droids, Infiltrator Droids, Aqua Droids, Vender Droids, the Purrobe Droid, Torture Droid, Chef Droid, and Spa Droids SN-DI & BO-Ni.
The DVD’s Special Features are the 5 featurettes: “Creating Kamino” of 13.25 minutes, “Hutts and the Underworld” of 15.5 minutes, “Witches and Monsters” of 16 minutes, “Secrets of Mortis” of appurroximately 2.5 minutes, and “Chewbacca Returns” of nearly 19 minutes. These offer delightful glimpses into the inspurrational, writing, design, rendering, animation, and sound purrocesses.
These include comments by supurrvising director Dave Filoni, lead designer Kilian Plunkett, CG supurrvisor of Lighting & FX Joel Aron, designers Wayne Lo, Russell Chang, Darren Marshall, Tara Rueping & Pat Presley; sound designer David Acord, purroducer Cary Silver, writer Katie Lucas, epurrsodic directors Kyle Donlevy, Brian Kalin O’Connell & Steward Lee; and actor Peter Mayhew.
The designs of the characters, mecha, creatures, architecture, landscapes, lighting and FX continue to top themselves in their lavish intricacy, enormity and complexity. The animation is incredibly fluid and graceful, whether it is an epic space battle, natural environments, busy crowded urban sprawl, a flutter of clothing fabric, agile dynamic characters in motion or the tiniest subtle expressions!
The great thing about a TV series is that it can spend so much time on so many characters. It might be a dark time for the Republic which some endearing characters won’t survive, but there’s so much warmth, depth and poignant drama amidst the thrilling epic adventure! There’s good humor, especially when it is more of the witty dialogue rather than silly buffoonery at a character’s expense!
I’ve been a fan of Star Wars since 1977, and there are certain movies and episodes I like more than others, but gosh it never gets old! As much as I liked seasons 1 & 2, I think The Clone Wars just keeps getting better, it makes the characters’ fates in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith much sadder & tragic, and I will give Season 3 and this DVD set a grade of “A+” as in Ahsoka, Anakin and Amidala! That’s all for this month’s reviews, but we’ll be back right after today’s final short break with–
This Month’s Lightning Round Topic:
Our Favorite Artistry Evocative of Autumn!
(during today’s final short break…)
I just got a message from Becca! They have concluded the golf and will be here after they spurruce up at the club house!
That might give us just enough time to purrpare the food, depending on how they arrive, nya!
We just have the Lightning Round to go!
JUNIPURR TWIG GEOMETER, NYA!
(she scampurrs with swishy tail & purrked ears to the window view of another moth by the outdoor light)
Huh? Oh another bug!
That did sound like a magickal incantation, heehee!
It is a Light Brown moth with the darker horizontal stripe across the wings.
Well, that is a nice moth!
Imoto-san, you have to hurry up, because we are about to conduct the lightning, nya!
Ah, yeah we got about another minute!
(after the break…)
It’s the Lightning Round , in which we we each give a quick response to the topic! This month’s topic is… examples of visual or performing art that evoke the imagery or moods of Autumn! This could be an actual representation of the season, or something that somehow puts you into the spirit! How about… we start with Petra to conduct the lightning round! (tags Petra to start)
LIGHTNING ROUND GO! NYA!
Oh gosh you asked the tough question because there are so many that come to mind, nya! Gosh, there are works that evoke the Autumn by Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rockwell, Berni Wrightson, Charles Vess, Caroline Young, Alan Lee, Lela Dowling, Robert Lyn Nelson, Susan Seddon Boulet, Andy Goldsworthy, Rebecca Brogden… oh I would not know where to begin, nya! (tags Yvonne to go next)
Yay I will nominate some of Rebecca Brogden’s beautiful illustrations such as “Autumn Stream”, “Autumn’s Revival”, “Turkey Day”, “Spooky Friend”, “Pumpkin Queen” and “Spirited Away”, nya! Nyow it is…Lizzy’sturn, nya! (tags Elizabeth)
For your consideration, Amy Brown’s “Autumn Daydream” of the faerie purrched on the branch; Lindsey Cormier’s “Autumn Thoughts” with the cute freckles, Keith Parkinson’s lady & dragon standing by “The Druid Stone”, Karl Bang’s illustration of the “Autumn Mistress”, and Nene Thomas’s “Knight of Fall”! (tags Nyoka)
Well… some of the images that I am purrticularly fond of are Linda Ravenscroft’s “Lady Autumn and the Green Man”, Tom Fleming’s art nouveau styled “Autumn”, Natascha Roosli’s joyful purrsonifiaction of “Autumn”, Selina Fenech’s “Autumn Lace” of the Earth Goddess, and Alan Welch’s illustration of “Fall” with model Kelly as the cheery Autumnal appurrition of the forest! (tags Tara-chan with a brush of the tail)
I like… I like It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, and – and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, nya! I am reminded of the wisdom of the Peanuts character Linus Van Pelt who advised “Never Jump into a pile of leaves with a wet sucker!” nya! (tags Mary Nyan)
I would like to mention the mewsic that suggests the season of Fall to me, such as the Jethro Tull record Heavy Horses; Mannheim Steamroller’s Fresh Aire III; Neil Young’s Harvest, Van Morrison’s Moondance, and Jeff Wayne’s mewsical version of “The War of the Worlds”!. Your turn, Nya-sensei! (tags Nyanko)
Oh I guess it would be movies like Halloween and Trick r Treat; the Kaku Renbo anime, that 2nd season “Catspaw” epurrsode of Star Trek, and that 2nd season “Halloween” epurrsode of Buffy! (tags Jeannie)
Autumn also means Thanksgiving and aside from the food, when I think of Thanksgiving, I am reminded of the famous Turkey Drop epurrsode of the TV show WKRP in Cincinnati, and the memorable line of “As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly”. Back to you Mike.
Gotta go with Frank Frazetta’s painting of “The Autumn People”, Bridget Wilde’s gorgeous “Akiko” the catgirl of Autumn, Dave Stevens’s “Pumpkin Pie” pin-up, Stephanie Pui-Min Law’s “Autumn Music” of the Fall fiddler, and Gil Elvgren’s sexy witch “Riding High” upon her broom for Halloween!
Oh I would like to add the images from Linda Ravenscroft’s ornate zodiac faerie series that exquisitely repurrsent the season!
I would also like to mention the women of the Autumnal signs, in the Zodiac Dancers series of beautiful Belly Dancer art by Lacy Chenault.
Let us not forget Katrina & Kazeyasha’s Zodiac Angels characters!
There is so much wonderful art of the astrological theme, nya! Boris Vallejo’s fantasy art calendar for… 1988 was of the zodiac theme too, with the magnificent images of Virgo, Libra & Scorpio for the Fall months, nya!
The change of seasons is depicted in the supurrb Aria anime and in the Maria Watches Over us anime, nya!
Hai, and Fall also means the start of the school year, which is depicted in some of my favorite manga such as K-ON, G.A., Ichiroh, Azumanga Daioh, and Sunshine Sketch!
Don’t forget the Autumn volume of Mark Crilly’s graphic novel series Mikki Falls, nya!
Oh that reminds me- one of my favorite stories of Shang-Chi the Master of Kung Fu was issue #144’s “A Fantasy of the Autumn Moon” by Doug Moench & Gene Day! It was quite beautiful and mysterious, with the intricate detail and the ethereal mood!
That’s a lot of wonderful sights & sounds! Any more? No?
