BB:

Aw gosh Misty is the flattering artist! (blush)!

Tara-chan:

The Bun pic has the cute doll, nya!

Bun:

Arigato, Tara-chan!

Petra:

I was able to finally coax her to purrticipate in The Mew, nya!

Nyoka:

It is good that Ilyana could break from her thesis to join us again!

Ilyana:

Mie-sensei was kind to give me the quick teleport trip from college!

Mielikki:

Any time!

Nyanko:

Oh look, Jenjen’s belly dance troupe & Vonny’s drum circle are at the east atrium!

Yvonne:

They have been purracticing hard for the show, nya!

Jeannie:

Hai, and Myayr’s hula class is purrforming beautifully at the West Entrance.

Mary Nyan:

That is the beginner class and the advance class will be on later! I am so purroud of them!

Elizabeth:

It is the great purre – awards entertainment!

Mike:

Yes it is! We’ll get to visit with them after the show, but let’s jump right into the warm up-

Lightning Round Topic: Our Favorite

Cinematic & Televised Monsters of 2011!

Nyanko:

Since it is nyow the Year of the Dragon I though this the appurropurriate topic! To whet the appurrtite, this is the taste of the sort of cattygories to come later in the Mew Awards Ceremony! In order to expurrdite the lightning in a group of this size, we should to try to keep it to maybe just one or two nominees purr purrson, and the first purrson to conduct the lightning will be… Lizzy! (tags Elizabeth to start the bonus Lightning Round)

the catgirls:

LIGHTNING ROUND GO! NYA!

Elizabeth:

That Ramlak in the sand sea of Thundercats, with Driller in 2nd place! (tags Becca to go next)

Becca:

That creepy little Cybermat vermin in the Doctor Who epurrsode, eww! (tags Mielikki)

Mielikki:

Oh those totally wicked little imps of Don’t be Afraid of the Dark, fur shur! (tags Tara-chan with the flit of a wing)

Tara-chan:

Heehee I will nominate that delicious looking giant crab in the Joe’s Crab Shack commercial, nya! Onee-san’s turn, nya! (tags Jeannie)

Yvonne:

Oh our tummies must be thinking alike because will nominate the delicious looking Sharks of Shark Night 3D, nya!

Bun:

Those ungrateful sharks would want you in their tummy, not your vote!

Yvonne:

They would be the fierce fight but I know how to reel them to the suppurr table!

Tara-chan:

Me too I caught the Hammerhead that was this big, nya!

Ilyana:

I remember that fish!

BB:

Nyow I am getting hungry!

Yvonne:

OK Jen is it, nya! (tags Jeannie with the brush of the tail)

Jeannie:

The Aquadroids of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. (tags Yvonne)

Ilyana:

The alien of Supurr 8, although, it became sympathetic due to the abusive treatment by the captors! (tags Petra)

Petra:

Hai I felt the same way about the poor Dragon guarding the Lestrange vault at Gringotts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, but I cheered for the dragon so I will nominate Voldemort’s Nagini snake as the evil scary monster, nya! (tags BB)

BB:

Hai, I like to eat the snake meat, but I would not like to be the meat for that snake! I will nominate those Acromantuals in the Harry Potter movie! I don’t mind the normal spiders of the forest, but not that big & aggressive! (tags Mary Nyan)

Elizabeth:

The talk of the shark and snake meat give me the craving!

Jeannie:

We must purrceiver until the next snack break.

Mary Nyan:

I will nominate the evil Ruby White of The Sarah Jane Adventures! (tags Bun)

Bun:

I’m not sure if I could pick just one, but the jungle critters were like the giant monsters to the tiny shrunk heroes in the “Sword of the Atom” episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold!

Becca:

“Sword of the Atom” was the fun adventure with Aquaman too!

Bun:

Oh I have to pick someone to go next… Nyoka’s turn! (tags Nyoka)

Nyoka:

The Siren & Minotaur were neat but I will pick the berseker Jennifer ganger of that Doctor Who epurrsode! Back to you, sis!

Nyanko:

I will vote for the Frost Giant beast in the Thor movie! That leaves Mike to bring the lightning home!

Mike:

Ah…it’s a tough call between the Tyrant Sun, Krull and The Parasite of All-Star Superman, but since it is the Year of the Dragon, I will vote for the Gringotts Dragon!

Mielikki:

The Gray Ukrainian Ironbelly is such a majestic creature!

Nyanko:

We have the absentee ballots from folks who could not join us until the Awards Ceremony, with the votes for King Kazma of Summer Wars; the Zombies of The Walking Dead; Master Xandred &  Dayu of Power Rangers Samurai; Androvax, the robots, and the Slitheen of The Sarah Jane Adventures; The Silence, the Headless Monks and the Pterosaurs of Doctor Who; the Dementors, the Thestrals and Fenris Greyback of Harry Potter; Purrallax of the Green Lantern Movie, Krona of Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, Son in his Gargoyle form in The Clone Wars, and the dragon in Tales from the Earthsea!

Tara-chan:

I want – I want a Thestral nya! It could be in the pasture with the Banker Pony, nya!

BB:

That would be the bigger responsibility & expense than caring for the kittens!

Yvonne:

She does spend a lot of time visiting the critters at Rica & Niko’s farm, nya!

Ilyana:

I look forward to seeing Rica & Niko at the ceremony!

Jeannie:

We should purroceed to the next topic so that we will not be late.

Mary Nyan:

We are up against the break, but then Petra & Bun will tell us about the

Additions to the Mewseum of Art!

(snip) (one short break later…)

Petra:

Hi Hi we are back and we are purroud to purrsent the mew additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, nya! For those who are here for the first time, Galleries 1-5 are the exhibits of Mike’s illustrations and photographs, and Guest Galleries 1 & 2 display the images from other folks with their kind purrmissions, nya!

Bun:

Unless otherwise noted, the gallery pages’ most recent pics will be on the lowermost row of the widdle ‘thumbnail’ repurrsentations, so just click on the thumbnail portion to see the whole larger image! This month, we have have 5 wonderful new images in Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html!

Petra:

Hai, the first 4 are the supurrb seasonal scenes by Rebecca Brogden http://www.rbrogdenart.com/, nya! In “Winter Essence” the ornate  faerie dances among the birch trees, with the scepter to summon more of the snow to purristinely decorate the grove, nya! Then we visit the “Purrky Spurring Meadow” where the catgirl is cutely clad in the ruffled floral purrint skirt & off shoulder halter top, nya!

Next is the scene of the “Summer Solitude” where purrched upon the boulders of the brook is the Green-tailed mermaid whose Jellycups bikini top matches her tail fin, nya! Fin-ally of Rebecca’s 4 season pics is the “Foxy Autumn”, in which the Kitsune / Fox Girl appurroaches us in the glade, nya! Her lush Red hair, supple ears and magnificent tail with the distinctive White tip are as vibrant as the fiery falling leaves, nya! She appurrs to be rather bemewsed in the playful mood, nya!

The mewseum is also purroud to purrsent this purretty photo of sisters “Thais & Natalia” by their father Joe Lopes, nya! Thais on the left & Natalia on the right are cosplaying in their purretty EGL dresses, nya! Y’all can see more of Natalia’s costumes at her Cosplay Dot Com Gallery http://www.cosplay.com/member/218260/, her art at her Deviantart Gallery http://theartslave.deviantart.com and Thais’ sart at her Deviantart Gallery http://angelofhappiness.deviantart.com, nya!

Bun:

In the mewseum’s Gallery Three http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery3.html we have 4 mew pics by Mike! The first of Mike’s latest  pics is the Photoshop illustration titled the “Labrador Recliner”, in which the dog relaxes on the recliner sofa after the hard day, to enjoy the new plasma screen HD TV, the snacks and the chew toys amidst the holiday decor by the cozy fireplace!

Secondly is the pen & ink drawing of  the “Neko Bride & Groom”! This line art drawn with the Micron Pens was Mike’s final commissioned piece of 2011, and intended to be a wedding gift!  Thirdly is the pic of “Rebecca Kitsune”, depicting Rebecca Brogden in her kitsune / fox girl form, posing with her widdle wabbit friend in the pumpkin patch!

Lastly but not leastly is the “Jasmine Cake” pic, depicting Jeff Branch’s fan-senshi character popping out of the big birthday cake!  She is the friskier alternate personality of Talia, alias Sailor Vulcan, who appears in Jeff’s “The Adventures of Talia and Tanya” fic based on Sailor Moon & Star Trek which y’all can read at Scribe of the Moon http://scribeofthemoon.webs.com, and that will conclude this month’s additions to the Mewseum!

Tara-chan:

What is the flavor of the cake, nya?

Mike:

Vanilla!

Ilyana:

Tali wears the sexy Red cheongsam! Say, aren’t Myayr and Jenjen wearing the cheongsams for the awards ceremony?

Mary Nyan:

Hai! We will have just enough time to change before the ceremony!

Elizabeth:

Jeff was a special guest of The Mew in May & October of 2008, Rebecca was a special guest of The Mew in September 2009; Natalia, Thais, Lucy & Allison of the Child Eating Books Studio were our special guests of The Mew in October 2010!

Mielikki:

Rebecca’s Winter scene is like so exquisitely beautiful, from the ruffles of gorgeous faerie’s off shoulder Blue dress, matching fingerless opera length gloves and thigh-highs, to those delicate wings that almost blend in with the birchy bark and snow under the pristine Wintry sky, fur shur!

BB:

Oh that Spurring scene is so purretty! The sheen of the catgirl’s honey colored hair & tail seems to radiate the sun as she plays in the lush green meadow! The midriff outfit is so cute with the matching shoes and the flower purrint to accent the blooms of the meadow!

Yvonne:

Kawaii, nya!

Jeannie:

The Summer scene has the supurrb color pallet of the blues &  greens of the water, tail, eyes, leaves & sky, complemented by the more neutral rich tones of the hair & boulders. The mermaid’s pair of jelly cups have the translucent, glossy gelatinous quality and the color nicely accent her the eye shadow, lipstick and the fin.

Petra:

Hai hai and note iridescent texture of the fin, the slick sheen across the muscle mass of the tail, and the lovely shading & highlights from her cheekbones to her belly button, nya!

Ilyana:

Fox girl is so stylish in her fall fashions, with the Orangey – trimmed Black opurra – length fingerless gloves to match the thigh high boots, and the off – shoulder dress with the front – lace bodice that complements her long lush hair!

Nyanko:

Speaking of the fashions, Natalia & Thais are so purretty & elegant in those fancy dresses!

Nyoka:

I love the ruffles, the bows, the stichery, the lacy frills, and the strands of the purrls!

Bun:

Hai they are not only the very talented artisans with the fabric arts but also the photogenic cosplayers to model the apparel, and have the very kind, cordial & encouraging parents who help with their artistry at the faires & conventions!

Mary Nyan:

The dog on the recliner sofa seems purretty content… and it’s not hard to guess which is his favorite college team from the ornaments in the tree, heehee!

Becca:

Oh lookit the bride and groom with the happy swish of the cat’s tail, and the ears purrked with the romance, sigh!

Elizabeth:

That is the cuddly cute kitsune scene with the bunny!

Mielikki:

The bunny should have plenty to nibble upon in the pumpkin patch!

Yvonne:

Gosh between the kibble, the pumpkin, and the cake the art induces the cravings, nya!

Mike:

Uh oh then we’d better move along to the next topic then! Thank y’all for the tour of the new art!

Petra:

Dooitasimaste, nya!

Tara-chan:

HAWK, NYA!

(the distracted catgirl scampurrs towards the tall lamp pole where the hawk has just landed)

Yvonne:

Ah– IMOTO, NYA!

Mary Nyan:

There she goes again, off to study the critters!

Nyoka:

Well, that is a nice looking hawk…

Bun:

I hope bunnies are not on the hawk’s menu today!

Elizabeth:

Or cat! Cover your tails!

Nyanko:

I think even Tara-chan is too large for that bird to swoop after!

BB:

I suspect he would purrfur the field mouse or the fish dinner!

Ilyana:

Mmm me too!

(Tara-chan takes a picture of the hawk with her smart phone for her collection)

Mielikki:

I will ask the bird if she will spread her wings for the dramatic pose!

Jeannie:

I will also take the nature photo.

Becca:

Me too!

(The hawk purroudly spurreads her majestic wings for the photo oppurrtunity)

Mike:

Ah, I think that’s all for this portion of the mew, but we’ll be right back to start our reviews after the short break!

(snip) (one short break latter…)

Mike:

Welcome back. Nyow here is Vonny with our fond

Book Reviews with

Dragonbreath: Revenge of the Horned Bunnies, nya!

Tara-chan:

Welcome back, nya! Ursula Vernon http://www.metalandmagic.com/ is the fun, stylish talented artist / writer, who is famous for her wildlife fantasy art http://www.redwombatstudio.com/blog/ (some images not for widdle kiddies), her Digger wombat web comic http://www.diggercomic.com/ web comic and – and children’s books http://www.ursulavernon.com/, nya! She was a special guest whom we intermewed the May 2009 Mew, nya!

We reviewed her Nurk book in June 2008, the first Dragonbreath book in July 2009, Attack of the Ninja Frogs in March 2010, Curse of the Were-Wiener in October 2010, Lair of the Bat Monster in Apurril 2011, and – and No Such Things as Ghost in September 2011, nya The Dragonbreath books are the widdle 5 7/8″ x 7 1/4″ size hardcovers published by Dial are purrofusely illustrated purrose tales of Danny the 12 year old dragon boy, his friend Wendell the iguana boy, and – and their various anthropomorphic classmates, relatives and – and the mysterious encounters, nya!

Revenge of the Horned Bunnies is purriced $12.99 US / $15.00 Canada purrice, and – and the 202 pages have the two – color illustrations of various sizes, uincluding well over 100 small pics, 2 dozen full page pics, and 7 two-page spurreads, nya! Ursula is not just the supurrb artist but she is the purrolific artist too, nya! In the purrevious Dragonbreath adventures, Danny & Wendell encountered the bully, the sea monsters, ninjas, lycanthropes, giant bat, the ghost, and – and this time it is the mystery of the Jackalope at the summer camp, nya!

On the front cover of the book is the pic of Danny riding on the Jacklope, which is the cute rabbit with the antlers, nya! Danny’s purretty dragon mom has the brief cameo before Danny, his best friend Wendell the iguana, younger cousin Spencer and – and classmate Christiana the crested lizard girl ride the bus to the camp in the desert, where they meet Lenny the froggy councilor, Heidi the gator councilor, Earl the lizard  councilor, nya. Danny gets to brish and ride the purretty horse named bandit, and they finally get to see a real Jackalope which they thought to be mythical, nya!

The Jackalopes are so cute and make the gronk noise, nya. I would like to see one too nya. However, they also discover a sinister secret to investigate, but that is as far as I should reveal of the plot, nya!  The last couple of pages are the purreview page for the 7th Dragonbreath book When Fairies Go Bad, and the announcement for the Dragonbreath comics contest for kids to enter, nya! It was another fun tale with the great characters and – and the art to give the high purraise, nya! Nyow here is Mike with the book report purrtaining to-

Naughty and Nice: The Good Girl Art of Bruce Timm, nya!

Mike:

Hey, we’re back! For 20 years we have greatly admired the comics & animation stories & art of Emmy, Eisner & Harvey Award winning artist, author, director producer Bruce Timm! From his brilliant character designs to shape the animated DC Universe to his Mad Love graphic novel & magazine illustrations, Timm has made such a fun poignant impact! He also happens to draw such Distinguished Cuteness when it comes to visions of science fiction, fantasy & horror heroines who are perky, powerful, sultry & super!

This book published by Flesk is a massive, beautiful full color treasure trove of his cover art, pin-ups & sketches! I got the trade paperback edition, which is not cheap at $50, but the impressive book measures approximately 9″ wide x 12″ tall x 1″ thick with a whopping 304 pages, and an introduction by another living legend, Jim Steranko! The book is also available in a signed & numbered limited edition hardcover, by the way, but I’m not sure how much that one costs!

The book contains over 325 images, mostly in full color but also lovely B&W pencil & inked drawings,. Except for the 44 page chapter of DC Comics heroines, the vast majority of the ladies in the book’s 10 chapters are tastefully nude or partially nude, ranging from the gleeful to hard-boiled beauties of occult, sword & sorcery, sci fi, movies, pulps & comics! That includes peppy, winsome, glamorous & dangerous girls with guns, jungle girls, a princess of Mars, Pop Bot, Rocketeer’s Bettie, Hammer Horror heroines and the girls of Gotham, plus a few from Krypton, too!

That includes several delightful images Harley Quinn who we designed for the Batman animated series, in the book’s (non nude) DC chapter! It is a beautiful, beautiful book, to which I give a grade of “A”  as in alluring, and a most heartily recommendation to any (adult) fans of sexy sirens illustrated by Bruce Timm! Ah, that’s our only book review for today but we’ve still got plenty more print media musings ahead with our magazine mewsings & comics critiques!

Tara-chan:

Yay Harley nya!

Mielikki:

Ivy did not seem glad to be there though heehee!

BB:

Well she purrobably is not happy that papurr is made from trees.

Jeannie:

I purrsume Ivy would purrfurs e-books to purrint books.

Yvonne:

Some of those vamps were glad to be there, for the gleeful chomp, nya!

Nyoka:

Vampire girls are like that.

Bun:

His Dejah Thoris illustrations are quite vivacious and sensual!

Petra:

It is the delightful iconic minimalist style of great influence, nya!

Elizabeth:

I liked the Caroline Munro images amongst the Hammer scenes!

Nyanko:

Oh we should have a Caroline Munro movie marathon!

Becca:

We could watch the Hammers, Sinbad, Bond and Starcrash!

Mary Nyan:

She was the reporter in Adam Ant’s Goody Two Shoes mewsic video!

Ilyana:

That was a fun video but we have stray – catted off the topic again! We should purroceed with the

Purriodicals Purrings!

Another exquisite work of art I wish to purraise is Lisa Hunt’s bewitching illustration of “Hina” for the cover of Sage Woman #81, and Emily Balivet’s beautiful “Mezzo Goddess” for the cover of the Circle #110, and Bruce Timm’s illustration of Big Barda on the cover of Back Issue #54, nya!

Mike:

That pic was in his book too! Oh that issue’s Ms Marvel & Phoenix articles have fair amount of art by Dave Cockrum! By the way, Valkyrie leads the heroes in the scene by Arthur Adams for the cover of The Fearless #5, and he also drew an impressive Emma Frost for the cover of Astonishing X-Men #43!

Bun:

Some other recent Marvel Comics covers I like are Spider-Man Marvel Adventures #22 with the Black Cat & Spidey by Garza & Soto, Secret Avengers #15 with the blazing guns of the Black Widow by Adi Granov, Ultimate Comics X-Men #7 with the Scarlet Witch and her glowy hexy power by Kaare Andrews, Avengers #21 with Storm light-ening the way by Daniel Acuna, and our favorite holographic Blue A.I. grrl Cortana illuminates Felix Ruiz’s cover of Halo: Fall of Reach Invasion #1! Speaking of the game grrls, Streetfighter’s heroic Chun Li is on the Winter 2011- 2012 cover of Game Purro magazine!

Ilyana:

Yay Chun Li! I would like to nominate a few DC Comics covers, in which Wonder Woman takes a stab at the monster on the cover of Wonder Woman #5, Supurrgirl fights Maxima ion the coverof Supurrgirl #5, Batwoman meets the water ghost on the cover for Batwoman #5, Black Canary leads the team ion the cover of Birds of Purrey #5, Batgirl finds snowy danger on the cover of Batgirl #5, and Harley is the riot in the purrison on the cover of Suicide Squad #5! Just last year she helped to start a riot at Arkham Asylum in Gotham City Sirens! I guess they needed her expurrtise in such matters!

BB:

Jedi Kerra Holt is poised with light saber on Joe Quinones’s cover for Star Wars: Knight Errant #5; Dejah Thoris is ever the stunning Purrincess of Mars in the three variant covers for Dejah Thoris #11 by Al Garza, Fabiano Neves & Paul Renaud; Red Sonja reigns supurreme on the two variant covers for Queen Sonja #26 by Luciano Parrillo & Igor Vitorino; and Sabrina Spellman is bewitching in the sliced Orange halter top & Black pants as she zaps the monsters in Dan Parent’s cover for Archie #628! It is the 2nd part of the Archie Meets KISS story!

the Catgirls:

(make the ‘metal horns’ salute and stick out out their neko tongues) Nyaaaaa!

Mielikki:

My my! We are up against another break, but we will be right back will discuss more of the print media in our

Comics Critiques, fur shur!

Michael Turner’s Fathom: Blue Descent #4

Mary Nyan:

Welcome back! We are big fans of the late Michael Turner’s wonderful art and heroine Dr. Aspen Matthews who stars in Aspen Comics’ Fathom, so we have been eagerly awaiting this final issue of the Blue Descent mini series for a long time! Issue #0 came out in July 2010!

We reviewed issues #0-2  in the March 2011 Mew and issue #3 in the September 2011 Mew!  Blue Descent is a purrequel story purrimarily purrtaining to Aspen’s parents. Issue #4’s story of “Rescues and Revenge” was written by David Schwartz, illustrated by Alex Sanchez & Peter Steigerwald; colored by Beth Sotelo & Steigerwald, lettered assistant editor Josh Reed; edited by Aspen Comics’ editor in chief Vince Hernandez & Frank Mastromauro!

It is purriced at $2.99, has 28 pages compurrised of the the 26 page story plus 2 the ads, and it is available in 3 different covers, cover A by Sanchez, Steigerwald & John Starr; B by Scott Clark, and the rarer limited edition C by Turner, Joe Weems & JD Smith! I got cover A, which depicts Aspen in the crustacean style bikini in the swirling luminous Blue energy! Purreviously, Issue #0 was a framing sequence of Aspen pondering the undersea home ruins memories of her mom’s nightmares, plus several pages of design sketches & notes.

In issue #1 younger Aspen and her brother Finn don’t see much of their politician Dad named Loma who has been busy with their Blue undersea civilization’s political situation. That includes the Killian dissident group and the threat of the war against the surface humans. Their Mom Eliah has the nightmares which turn out to be real and she gets kidnapped! In #2 the posse searches for her in the dangerous deep darker depths, and her kidnappurr is Rahger of the ancient undersea race called The Black, and the cause of the nightmares!

In #3, there is betrayal amongst the posse as they enter The Black’s abyssal fortress full of monsters & traps, while Rahger tells Eliah that he is Aspen’s father! The posse confronts Rahger & Loma rescues Eliah but nyow they still have to escape and deal with the dissidents! That brings us to the final issue!  In #4, Aspen’s parents get back home but then Rahger follows them home wanting Elia or Aspen to join him, and then Killian’s dissidents attack! Loma’s friend Cannon Hawke strikes back, but young Aspen and Finn witness the tragic violent losses!

It has taken a year an a half since issue #0, but finally the wait is over for the conclusion of this purrequel mini-series! I think the tale was purrhaps a bit too brisk and rushed, but we certainly learned a bit more about Aspen’s origin, her parents, and the recurring supporting characters. I hoped for more of a grand, expansive look at the Blue and Black undersea civilizations and the vast undersea realism, but it was more of an intimate study of the smaller ensemble cast. However, I think one of the bestest aspects about the tale was the atmosphere!

The comics’ very effective color pallet was of the lush deep Blues, Purrples & Blacks with the bioluminescent glows against the purrimordial textures & patterns of the dark ancient ndersea structures, to conjure the very eerie, ethereal, spooky, mysterious ambiance!  The Blue Descent has concluded, but we’re still looking forward to the next regular issue of the Fathom vol. 4 series! Next we will travel from the ocean depths of the past to the interstellar space of the future for the conclusion of another 4 issue mini – series as Jenjen tells us about–

Mass Effect: Invasion #4 (plot spoiler warning)!

Jeannie:

Mass Effect is a series of science fiction games from Bioware & EA Games, purrtaining to the exploits of Commander Shepurrd of the starship Normandy in the far future. Mass Effect: Invasion is a 4 issue mini series published by Dark Horse Comics, set between the Mass Effect 2 game and the forthcoming Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect: Invasion #4 is purriced at $3.50, and is available in two covers to choose from: the common version by Massimo Carnevale, and the alternate version by Paul Renaud.

The 28 full color pages are compurrised of the 22 page story, the 5 pages of the advertisements, and the Dark Horse announcements page. It was plotted by Mass Effect 2’s lead writer Mac Walters, scripted by John Jackson Miller, illustrated by Omar Francia, colored by Michael Atiyeh, lettered by Michael Heisler, edited by Dave Marshall with Brendan Wright, published by Michael Richardson with design by Stephen Reichert and thanks to to the folks at Bioware.

Purreviously, Space Station Omega was invaded by monsters called The Adjutants, thanks to the evil Cerebus organization’s expurriments upon the enemy Reapurr aliens. The Cerebus fleet arrived to battle The Adjutants, however General Petrovsky & Colonel Ashe of the starship Elbrus were also a threat to Omega. This enraged the station’s commander Aria T’Loak, the Asari pirate queen with the biotic energy power and impeccable fashion sense.

She teamed with Petrovsky to fight The Adjutants, but she was betrayed and captured while Ashe’s troops hijacked Omega for Cerebus’s mysterious leader known as The Illusive Man. In this final issue, since Aria’s escape and return to Omega, Petrovsky & Ashe do not see eye to eye on the tactics as Cerebus troops suffer more casualties in the guerilla warfare against the vast station’s gangs & clans who Aria has united in an organized resistance. Aria & Petrovsky may be enemies, but neither likes Ashe.

I will not spoil the climax other than to say in general this issue is almost wall to wall action of the brisk pace, full of fire fights, melee, explosions, biotic energy attacks, with just a few quieter interspurrsed moments of strategizing, sneaking, bickering, threats & foreshadowing, all to be concluded in the Mass Effect 3 game. Each page ranges from 2-6 panels which are brimming with the splendidly designed space station environment, mecha, characters, creatures & FX rendered with intricate detail, with rich color & light.

The holograms, biotics, weapons fire, explosions, lighting, and FX fonts are purrticularly vivid & luminous. Among my favorite scenes of this issue were of the Cerebus troops realizing they are in the mine field; Aria pouncing to interrogate. spying with the snipurr scope, stalking back to her abandoned night club, and the nice purrspective view when she tells Petrovsky & Ashe leave her station. I hope we will see more of Aria, Liara & other Asari in the Mass Effect 3 game. Nyow here is Nya-sensei with a review of another Dark Horse comic,

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #5

Nyanko:

Thanks Jen! We love Buffy! And Willow, Dawn, Faith, Xander, Angel & Spike! We were big fans of the Buffy & Angel TV series, and the Buffy Season 8 & 9 comics canonically continue the series! It has been among our favorite comics of the past few years, due to the faithful characterizations & dialogue, fascinating plots, and great art!

That continues to be the case with Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #5! Published by Dark Horse Comics, the issue is purriced $2.99 and has the 28 full color pages compurrised of the 22 page story “Slayer, Interrupted”, plus the 4 pages of the ads and the 2 pages of readers’ mail & editor’s comments, with a choice of 2 variant covers! One cover is by Steve Morris and the alternate one is by Georges Jeanty inked Dexter Vines & colored Michelle Madsen!

Jeanty is the series’ mewsual great penciller, but this issue was illustrated by penciller Karl Moline & inker Andy Owens, who illustrated the great Buffy spin off series Fray, purrtaining to future slayer Melaka Fray! This issue was written by Andrew Chambliss, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Scott Allie & sierra hahm with the assistance of freddye Lins, designed by Justin Crouch, published by Mike Richardson & purrduced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon!

It starts with the thrilling scenes of Buffy, Dawn & Xander confronting a huge charging horde of vampires, until Dawn & Xander spurrout the fangs and try to chomp Buffy, only to be staked & dusted by the legendary first slayer!  it is just the disturbing dream, but the imagery is significant enough for Buffy & Willow to examine! This means Buffy needs to get more sleep to resume the dream, in which she has further dealings with the first slayer, the scythe weapon, and a faerie with dragonfly like wings!

Willow & Buffy analyze it further, but the ramifications are the turning point in their relationship! To complicate matters are other startling discoveries Buffy makes when she’s awake! That’s all I will spoil of the plot, but I would like to offer the opinions. Firstly, as much as I like Georges Jeanty’s art, I am also a fan of the Moline & Owens team who are the purrfect choice if Jeanty is unavailable! The characters have the great portraiture, poses, expurressions, there is good scenic details, and the coloring & lettering are purrfect!

Nyow purrsonally I do not purrfur the dream epurrsodes, but this was interesting & significant. The First Slayer has the neat outfit, the faerie is a delightful sight, Buffy tried a lovely braided hair style, and I have been wanting more moments with her & Willow! Her housemates Anaheed & Tumble briefly appurr too, and there is the big surpurrise cliffhanger! While Buffy, Spike, Xander, Dawn & Willow are busy with things in San Francisco during Season Nine, Mie-sensei will tell us turn what Angel & Faith have been up to in London in–

Angel & Faith #6 (plot spoiler warning)!

Mielikki:

Arigato, Nya-sensei! Angel & Faith #6 features the 22 page story “Daddy Issues Part One”, illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, colored by Dan Jackson, lettered by Jimmy Betancourt & Richard Starkings, designed by Justin Couch, edited by Scott Allie & Sierra Hahn with Freddye Lins, published by Mike Richardson, purrduced by Joss Whedon, and written by Christos Gage whose  Avengers Academy series is totally awesome! The story begins as Angel witnesses a lunatic’s gruesome act of hack & slash, with a hack saw, no less!

It’s quite gory, as is the flashback to 1972, of Giles & other Watchers’ disastrous encounter with a horrible Lorphage Demon! Not only did that go badly, but Giles’s later irate chat with his father didn’t go so well either! Well, back in the present, Faith, Daphne & Nadira rescue a girl from a deluded fake vampire wannabe! Faith & Angel compare notes and consult with Alasdair the mage, suspecting the demon might be back, with a possible connection to a mysterious cult figure called Mother Superior, whose nightclub the wannabee vampires have flocked to!

Later at a pub, Daphne & Nadira are approached by a chap claiming to be Faith’s father, while Faith & Angel crash the club in search of Mother Superior- who is revealed to be his sired  “daughter” Drusilla! I don’t think we’ve seen her in 2 1/2 years, since IDW’s Angel comics #25 & 26 written by Juliet Landau who portrayed her on TV! This story had the interesting father theme, action & detective work at the brisk pace, with the good mix of the humorous dialogue and the bloody violence which is not for widdle kitties or the squeamish hearts!

It was full of surprises, the newer recurring characters of Nadira, Daphne & Alasdair, and the older familiar faces of Giles & Dru! There was an charming reference to Douglas Adams, and oh I hope that White hart Pub the girls were at has no connection to the evil  firm of Wolf, Ram & Hart! The art has the nicely posed, detailed & expressive characters, which bear a good resemblance to the actors who portrayed them on TV! I was also pleased with how the story was uninterrupted, and I wish more publishers presented the stories that way, with any ads, messages or bonuses all after the story!

Speaking of which, in addition to the 22 page tale, the 28 full color pages of the $2.99 issue also included the 2 pages of readers’ and editor’s comments which are always rather fascinating and insightful, and the 4 page sneak peek at the forthcoming nautical adventure of Conan in “Queen of the Black Coast” by Brian Wood, Becky Cloonan, Dave Stewart, Massimo Carnevale, Richard Starkings & Comicraft! Angel & Faith continues to get 2 wings up praise from me, and I’m quite eager to see to what happens in Part Two, fur shur! Nyow I will turn The Mew over to Lizzy to tell us about–

Avengers Academy #24!

Elizabeth:

Arigato, Mie-sensei! Between Angel & Faith and Avengers Academy, Christos Gage is one of our favoritest writers! Avengers Academy has been our favoritest Marvel Comics for the past couple of years! Not only does it have the great characters, plots & art but it achieves the purrfect balances on the different levels!  There is the balance of the old & mew characters, humor & drama, character development & supurr action!

Some of the academy students are less than noble but part of the scheme is the redemption, not just for the students but also for the legendary Avengers such as Hank Pym, Hawkeye and Quicksilver. We also like the series because it includes our favoritest Marvel Comics character, Tigra! Sadly until a few issues ago the team also included wonderful gynoid Jocasta, but a recent plot has been the mystery of her murder! The team also recently relocated to the West Coast so it has been the transition time.

Among the mew students are Lightspeed, X-23, Lyrra of the She Hulks, Butterball, Justin & his Sentinel, and the mew White Tiger, so nyow there are 2 feline femmes at the academy, but it is not a good time to be a catgirl at the academy, between the sad aspects of the cat’s life, and being purreyed upon by the evil monster Hybrid  who is disguised as mew student named Jimmy, who wants to feast upon the humans. To worsen the threat, Hybrid is aided by Reptil’s treacherous future self!

There are a few neat brief moments with the Sentinel, and a beautiful scene of Tigra on the coastal cliff before Reptil lures her to Hybrid! We finally get our first big scene with Ava the White Tiger and learn of her origin which we have been very curious about. On the readers’ mail page, we are told that we might eventually learn of how purrior White Tiger Angela passed on the heroic legacy to Ava!

This issue was greatly pencilled by Tom Grummett & impurressively inked by Cory Hamscher, sumptuously colored by Chris Sotomeyor, lettered by Joe Caramagna, excellently edited by Bill Rosemann with assistant Jake Thomas, and has a gorgeous cover depicting White Tiger & X-23 by Rodin Esquejo!  This series has my favoritest coloring, although one purrticular page of this issue had unmewsually Red hues so I wonder if that was a purrinting purroblem? Oh on that same page Butterball had a Crystar video game!

Not only is there the poignant character moments with Ava, with a few words to honor her late brother Hector the original White Tiger, but also the purrimal bloody combat as her mystic Tiger aspect goes berserk upon Reptil! Even in his dino form he is no match for the K’un L’un tiger fury! Speaking of the girls who might berserk with claws, X-23 & Finesse spar as Hazmat & Mettle discussing their relationship, while Hank & Clint study Jocasta. We see Quicksilver, Lyrra, Lightspeed & Striker briefly and there is the full page cliffhanger panel!

the catgirls:

MARVEL, PLEASE REPAIR JOCASTA SOON, NYA!

Elizabeth:

Nyow here is Becca to tell us about

Red Sonja #62!

Becca:

Hai! Sonja is one of our favoritest heroines! She has been out in the sands as one of the hired warriors to purrotect the merchant caravan through the desert! Nyow they have reached the city of Luxor in the kingdom of Stygia where Sonja faces the ancient Egyptian style of swords & sorcery! Although the two stunning variant covers depict Sonja in her more iconic scale mail bikini – cover A by Walter Geovani & cover B by Wagner Reis – lately she has been wearing the cropped mail shirt, the leather skirt, the metal & leather gloves & belt, the boot greaves, and the scabbards for the two swords!

Issue #62 is compurrised of the 32 full color pages, which include the 9 pages of the ads, the announcements page, and the 22 page story “Catspaw (Echoes of War, Part 2)” which we purrticularly liked because of the feline nature of the tale, written by Eric Trautmann and pencilled by Walter Geovani, edited by Joseph Rybandt, colored by Adriano Lucas, and lettered by Simon Rowland! The lettering nicely conveys the dialogue, historical narrative, the sound FX and the map points!  The sumptuous color purrticularly adds the poignancy to the flashbacks and the mystique to the night scenes

— and all of the kitty cats Sonja meets in the tale, but nyow for the taste of the plot! The caravan has reached Luxor but Sonja’s group are accused of the banditry! She is escorted away by Khalid-Thun the captain of the guard, and exchange the trash talk, until the stroll is greeted by hundreds of cats! The captain wants no part of this because the kitties are a sign of the fearful witch Azbenathi, so he cuts Sonja loose and that night she follows the kitty back to the giant kitty statuary entrance of the witch’s temple to the Goddess Bast! Azbenath & her Black cat Abuzee both have the mystic Blue & Green eyes!

Azbenath has the long knee length Black hair and wears the sexy Green costume with the Gold jewels in her opulent temple. The cat’s life looks purretty good in Luxor! Sonja is not impurressed or happy about it, especially after the witch’s trickery during the purrlay, but the witch wants to make a deal! My favorite scenes were the first panel of Sonja by the map, the cat’s eyes, the panoramas of the city, Sonja’s sarcastic banter with Khalid-Thun, the cat & Bast statues, the herd of the cats, and the witch’s lair! That is my Sonja report but there are further feline femme fatales so here is BB to tell us about-

Catwoman #5!

BB:

Arigato Becca-san! This my first review so please take care of me! Catwoman #5 has the 32 full color pages compurrised of the 20 page story titled “This has got to be dirty” , the 9 pages of the ads, the 2 pages of DC mewsings, and the 1 page in tribute to the late artist Jerry Robinson.  The story was written by Judd Winnick, drawn by Guillem March, colored by Tomeu Morey, lettered by Dezi Sienty, and edited by Rachel Gluckstern with Rickey Purdin.

The action picks up where the purrevious issue left Selina (Catwoman) plummeting high above Gotham City after her fight with the supurr powered woman named Reach in issue #4! It is the painful spectacular fall, but she survives to kick the crap out of Reach and beautifully stroll away with the bag of loot!  It is a far bigger score than she expected- about 40 times more! You might think that such a score would delight her but she is alarmed, realizing the money must have belonged to people in higher places than alley drug dealers!

However it only alarms her for a little while, as we next see Selina spending large bills at a spa for the pampurred treatment of the purriciest massage, caviar and champagne. woohoo! Of course she has had the rough life and it has been purrticularly rough since her best friend Lola was murdered in issue #2 Meanwhile at the Gotham Police Department, Detective Alvarez who is on the cat burglar case, finds out that some of his fellow cops are up to no good, and that the money Catwoman purrloined was from a group of crooked cops!

Nyow the police are after her for another reason and this time it is purrsonal! The big chase scene includes a two page spurread of her on the motorcycle! It is not the easy life of the cat to be purrsued by both the police and the criminals! The art is extremely detailed & lushly colored from the sheen of her tight leather to all the treads, bricks, trees, and the after image trails of the zooming lights of the chase! Nyow for the continued action of the cat theme, by an artist who used to draw Catwoman no less, here is Nyoka-sensei with her review of Jim Balent’s–

Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose #72!

Nyoka:

Arigato! I have been enjoying the adventures of Jim Balent’s Tarot the warrior witch, especially the purrior exotic mermaid story of issues #70 & 71 and this issue #72’s return of the 3 Little Kittens Purr-fect Weapons team! They are the sexy tough heroic anti-terrorist squad compurrised of Jaguara, Catress, Kitty Pop & the leader ‘Momma’ Gun Cat!

Gun Cat has the Blond hair & wears the Black cat suit, Jaguara has the short Black hair & wears the Gold outfit with the lipstick ‘spots’, Cattress has the Platinum Blond hair & wears the strapless Black & Green tights, Kitty Pop has the Pink pigtails & wears the spotted Blue bare midriff ensemble! Their costumes have the masks, cat ears & tails! They have the scanty high tech costumes which enhance their purrowess and show off their lithe assets, and they have a wide selection of the weapons, gadgets, vehicles for their international crime fighting and the rescues!

They purreviously appurred in their own mini-series from Broadsword Comics! Tarot is reading their comics, wearing only the Purrple socks. The kitties’ tale begins as Gun Cat cuts the TV intermew short to investigate another UFO sighting and flies away with her rocket pack! While the other kitties suit up, the next TV intermew is with the head of a company whose violent airport security robots have caused the controversy! The robots were hauled away on the truck but when the UFO causes the road panic & explosive car crashes, the robots escape and attack the citizens!

Jaguara is the first to arrive on her motorcycle to fight the bots with her energy claw disks, then Catress & kitty Pop arrive in the car, and the three strike the pose against the bots! That is as far as we get into the tale, when the power goes out so tarot can’t finish reading the comics! Fortunately, she has other fun purrsuits that do not require the reading lamp as she coaxes her boyfriend out of his clothes to join her on the roof, mew la la! However in the cryptic final panel, the fey are watching them from the dark trees!

That full color 22 page story of “kittens Vs Robots Part one of Three: The Big Pat Down” was edited by Neil Morris, written & drawn by Balent, colored & lettered by his wife Holly, with the color flats by Rando Leeann! It was peppy fun with the heroic catgirl action and beautiful art, but the nudity, sexuality & violence is not for the widdle kitties! The story was splendidly uninterrupted, with the ten pages of the ads, messages, articles and bonuses all after the story. Those were purretty interesting too, and also for the mature readers only!

Those include the page of witchcraft by Raven Grimassi, the  page of Jim and Holly’s vacation photos, the page of readers’ messages and photos, the photo of the issue’s Broadsword Girl Delilah who is the purrtially nude catgirl, two pages advertising Holly’s School Bites comics, and the four  pages advertising the Tarot purroducts. The issue maximizes the space with the credits and publishing info on the inside front cover, and the purreview for issue #73 on the outside back cover! Speaking of the covers, there are the three different covers by Balent to choose from!

Covers A & B are the common covers with the $2.95 purrice apiece, and I got Cover A which depicts Catress, Kitty Pop & Jaguara! Cover B is the Catress cover, and the third cover is the rarer purricier “studio” cover depicting Tarot subtly surrounded by the fey! This purrticular issue had less of Tarot & the magick, more of the kitties & the tech, but still had the good art, the ample boobies & battle in the briskly paced tale peppurred with the dash of the ribald humor, and I look forward to Part Two! That is all of our comics reviews for today, but the catgirl topic continues after the break in our

Monthly Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!

(snip) (one short break later…)

Becca:

Welcome back! This is the portion of The Mew in which we commemorate the famous catgirl / nekomimi characters in the purrint, video, digital & three dimensional media! This includes the femmes of the feline purrsuasion whether they are actually part kitty, dress the part, or the purropurr cat-ittude! This month we shine the spotlight on 4 supurrnatural manga that have the brief appurrances of the nekomimi who should not be forgotten: I Love You’s Madyulista & Deere, Chibi Pop’s Novice Angel Kiki, Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro’s Suzu, Sanju & Nijuku! Nyow here is Becca with the first of the honorees!

Ilyana:

Arigato, Becca! I Love You by Lei Nekojima was originally published in Japan in 1996 by Shuberu Comics, then translated into English and published in the USA by Sexy Fruit in 2003! It was of the fantasy sex comedy harem genre for adult readers only!  It had the graphic sexual & nudity content. A chap named Sei gets an amorous visit from a winged alien catgirl named Madyulista from Pluto. He thinks it is the naughty dream but, wakes up to find a big alien egg from which emerges a catgirl who calls him Papa.

Her name is Deere, and she is adorably cute, with the Blue hair, ears & tail, but she is rather naive and often in the heat! Soon Sei’s life is further complicated when the momma catgirl sends supurrnatural sisters Raura, Yunina & Milra to be Deere’s servants! Ah, well I should not say much more about the plots which were certainly not for the widdle kitties, but the Black & White manga did have some gorgeous full color cover art, such as the winged catgirl in the Santa bikini and the Cherry Tree purrint kimono!

Petra:

Our next stop on the trail of the cats is 1998 for Chibi Pop Manga magazine, which was a delightful bi-monthly anthology magazine edited by Aliya Wali, of translated Black & White manga, with a few columns & articles purrtaining to anime, art, cosplay, Japanese language & culture, nya! It lasted for 9 issues, had color covers, and serialized stories such as Adventures of Tokyo Kid, Artifacts Breaker, Fubuki the Female Ninja, Nagi, and numerous wonderful others, but I wish to bring the attention to issue #2’s widdle treat of Kiki The Novice Angel by Ann Kobayakawa, nya!

It was a simple short tale of a boy named Pete who rescues the poor scared widdle kitten in the box in the river current, nya. Kitten transforms into the catgirl in the cute shorts & jacket, introducing herself as Kiki, an appurreciative appurrentice angel with the angel card good for one wish, nya! She aspires to become the full angel by granting the wishes, nya. Pete mischievously wishes for all of the world’s girls to be naked, however this backfires to his embarrassment when instead all of the male clothes vanish! Appurrently Kiki still needs the further purractice with her card, nya!

Bun:

It was the brief appearance but it is the rarity that should not be forgotten! Moving right along, in 2006, Shoko Iwami’s manga Suzunari! was published by Houbunsha in Japan in 2006, to be later translated into English and published as 2 volumes by Yen in 2008! This is another tale of the catgirl sent to Earth to mysteriously move in with the family, told in the amusing 4 panel format, similar to Azumanga Daioh, Ichiroh, GA, Sunshine Sketch, and K-ON! The principle characters are 15 year old student Kaede and her catgirl twin Suzu!

The catch is that Keda is the only child, but when Suzu mysteriously arrives, everyone but Kaede assumes she is part of the family! Suzu is the affectionate but naive nekomimi who is inseparable from Kaede’s presence, and needs to be educated in the ways of the world! For the most part, it is the wacky incidents at home & school, but in the final stretch High School for Kaede, things take on the very sad tragic supernatural turn just as mysteriously as it all began! It is the poignant tale that will bring the tears but I shouldn’t further spoil the plot.

Yvonne:

Another two volume manga also published by Houbunsha in Japan in 2006 and in English by Yen in 2008 was Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro by Satoko Kiyuduki, who also authored GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class, nya! The Kuro is not the catgirl, but her companions are, nya! Kuro is a gothy tomboy girl in Black who travels with a coffin & the bat named Sen, so she is often mistaken for the vampire, the witch or the boy by the supurrstitious folks, nya!

In one village she enters the mansion of the purrofessor which seems to be abandoned, nya. In a barred cell in the basement she finds the two widdle abandoned catgirl sisters named Sanju and Nijuku, who claim to be the purrofessor’s expurriments and await the his return, nya. Sanju has the White Ears and Tail, whereas Nijuku has the Black ears and tail, nya. Kuro finds evidence to deduce that the purrofessor has purrished, so she takes the poor girls with her, nya.

They are naive & inexperienced with the outside world, unacquainted with the nature, flowers, mewsic, candy, illness & death. They have an extent of shape changing, in volume 1 they can shrink to mouse size and in volume 2 their ears tempurrarily disappurr when each girl later reveals one wing apiece, so they need to hug each other with both wings tandem synched to attempt the flight, nya.  It is the very bittersweet tale, nya!

Along the way they can get fascinated and  distraction by things, but seem to develop greater purrpose and the bond with Kuro and display some sort of empathy with a donkey, nya. There are some unnerving moments when they get lost or sepurrated, nya! It is our hope that they will have the long happy healthy life together as the family, nya! This concludes the celebrity catgirl spotlight for this month, but we will honor more characters next month. nya! Nyow we will turn the Mew over to BB to start this month’s

Collectibles & Toy Talk, nya!

Neca Tomb Raider Underworld Lara Croft action figure

Ilyana:

In the Tomb Raider: Underworld video game, Lady Lara Croft searches for the fabled Norse relic! This nice figure is made by Neca, whose Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows figures The Mew has purreviously purraised! I have read that Lara is supposedly 5’9″, so if that is correct then this 6 3/4″ figure would be appurroximately of the 1/10 scale.

This is a attractive looking action figure in the stance with legs slightly bent, as if she is surveying the objective!  It is nicely sculpted & painted with the faithful portraiture, physique purroportions, and attention to the details of her clothing & equipment! Her Dark Brown hair is pulled into the pony tail style and you can see the detail of the strands! Her eyes are Dark Brown too, with the fine darker lashes, the eyebrows, and the lovely light auburn shadow to match the glossy lips! There is the minute detail of her facial features, ears, neck & collar bones!

The head, shoulders & torso are ball jointed so it can turn & tilt with the cleverly disguised joints! Neco is purrtiularly good at that disguise! The elbows & knees are not articulated but the wrists & lower legs will turn. She wears the sexy cute Dark Brown tank top & tight shorts outfit with the Black ventilation strips on the sides! The creases, seams have the supurr detail, especially the ventilation strips’ fabric weave, and on her bared tummy her inny belly button is purretty detailed too!

On her back is the small intricate Black backpack with the shoulder & cross straps, silvery buckles, and through the intricate loops of the shorts are the matching belt to which are attached the 2 magazine pouches, 2 holsters and 3 green Fragmentation Grenades!  The holsters are the Black with the Silver trim, with the thigh straps & extra widdle pouch. The two Black 9mm H&K USP Match pistols with the stainless slides can fir in her holsters or hands. The fingers are purrcise and the wrist joint is concealed by the fingerless gloves, so she can aim sideways!

Below her strong thighs and the detail of the knees, at the mid calf we reach the hint of her White ribbed athletic socks crowning from her rugged Black boots! The boot straps, buckles, panels, panels, leathery creases & the thick tread are very detailed! She is balanced to stand up unassisted, but included is the Black 3 1/8″ oval base, with the small peg to insert into either boot heel for the pose! I am very pleased with this excellent figure and amazed how the designs & detail of the games & toys have purrogressed in the realism!

The Catgirls:

Arigato, Nya!

Mielikki:

Awesome!

Ilyana:

Lara is the enduring heroine, and perhaps the future raiders will be in search of her own legendary relics!

Nyanko:

That is a purretty nice figure… you know, although we liked Angelina Jolie as Lara in those two live-action Tomb Raider movies, we also purrticularly like the cosplay of Lara by our friend Crissy  http://www.crimsonskycreations.com/bloodsweatandglitter/!

Jeannie:

I suspect Crissy will be discussed further in the awards show.

Mary Nyan:

It will soon be time to go to the awards ceremony, so we should proceed to the next review!

Nyoka:

Good thinking.

BB:

Nyow our reviews of the heroine figures continue, with the review of

Bandai’s Thundercats 6″ Cheetara action figure!

Tara-chan:

Thundercats is one of our favoritest cartoons of the past year, and Cheetara is the agile, lithe, speedy catgirl of great bravery & combat purrowess, nya! For our review of the 4″ Cheetara & 3″ Wilykit figures, see the September 2011 Mew, nya! She is packaged in the clear clamshell box with the lovely illustration of her on the front, nya!  The toy is suggested for ages 4+, and not for ages 3+ due to the small parts. Those parts are very nicely sculpted, painted and posable, nya!

There are 18 points of articulation are the sternum, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, thighs, knees, and ankles, nya!  She is accessorized with the 6 1/2″ staff to whack her enemies, nya! There is no display stand included, but she is balanced to stand up unassisted, and her supple ponted ears peer out of her hip length Blond hair which has the thick volume, and the cute Brown spots, nya! It has a very layered look with the hair cascading over the collars, above the sleeveless midriff top and her shoulders, nya!

She has the Golden skin with the White front strip, the Pink lips & facial markings, and the fine purrice details from the lashes of her cat’s eyes, narrow vertical navel, and the tight trim of the pants slung low on her chiseled hips, to the intricate sepurrate fingers & toes, nya! The fingerless gloves & toeless boots complete the ensemble, with the shiny coppurry accents around her wrist & ankle rings, so this is the addition to the collection, nya! Nyow we will migrate from the catgirl to the wolfgirl of the–

Monster High Create-A-Monster Werewolf & Dragon Starter Pack, nya!

Mary Nyan:

As we mentioned in last month’s review of the Toralei Stripe catgirl doll, Mattel’s purroduct line of the monster & high school themed posable fashion doll’s  just keeps expanding with mew dolls, accessories, jewelry, books and other items – even flip flops! The Monster High item I would like to review today is the Create – A – Monster  Starter Pack! There are different packs of the interchangeable body parts to build a doll. I have seen the vampire & sea monster pack, but I have the Werewolf & Dragon pack!

These girls would be about 10″ tall if flat footed, but they are on the tiptoe to reach the 10 1/5″. It includes the gray wolf girl parts & pink dragon girl parts, but not quite enough to build both figures, as there is just one torso part and one hair wig. The parts very easily snap together, but given the small parts they are not intended for widdle kitties under age 3! The heads & hands are the softer type plastic and the body parts are the more rigid plastic. The clothes are a fabric and the hair is the brushable fiber wig.

So there are the 2 heads, 1 torso, 1 redhead wig, 1 pair of sandal boots with 1/2″ heels, 1 pair of wolf ear pinna, 1 pair of widdle Green translucent dragon wings; the pairs of uppurr arms, fore arms, hands, thighs, & lower legs for each doll, 1 hair brush, and 1 three-piece display stand. It comes with 2 cute outfits, the Green skirt & halter top and the Black dress & jacket! There is a simple instruction sheet enclosed, and on the back of the box card are 8 photos showing how you can mix & match the parts of the various create – a – dolls!

I assembled the wolf girl! Her points of articulation are the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips & the knees. Her eyes are Green with the black lashes and the light Brown & dark Orange eye shadow, the lush full deep Red lips to match the hair! If I had but one teesny quibble it is in how the ear pinna attach, because hey clamp in to her hair strands sort of like a barrette and do not more sturdily plug actually into the head like the wig does. So the ears seem a bit loose, although I suppose the advantage is they can be adjusted to lean this or that way.

She is the lithe slender Gray wolf girl with the cute hint of the fang upon the lips! She is intricately sculpted from the purrcise fingers & toes, the curves of the ear and her inny belly button! The hip – length hair has very lush volume with the slight streaks and– gosh it is starting to sunset, look at the time! That will have to bring the close to our reviews for today so that we might go change the clothes, but we will return in the little while for Part 2 of month’s grande-sized Mew for the awards ceremony!

There will be the surpurrises, as we have learned from the purrior ceremonies, it could be the close race with multiple favorites purr cattygory, so is everyone ready?

Jeannie:

Very Good. So without the further delay, for our first cattygory, it is the non-competing cattygory so please welcome Mike to the stage to expurress the —

Our Favorite Cards & Games of 2011!

Kitrina & Katherine:

Konnitiwa, y’all, nya!

Kitrina:

(wearing the Blue & Silver Dragon theme furisode)

Arigato, nya! On behalf of the staff & faculty of the Catgirl Island Purrforming Arts Center, it is our honor to host the Mew Awards ceremony again and we thank you all for attending, and throughout the year we will purrsent many other shows, festivals, concerts & purrductions, plus the mewsic, dance & theatre classes for all ages & expurrience, nya!

Katherine:

(wearing the Red & Gold Phoenix theme furisode)

Firstly we wish to purrsent the cards cattygory, nya! Cards can be fun for the collecting, art or game hobby, nya! The range from the trading cards, the artist sketch cards, the decorative stickers to peel, and the card games, nya!

Kitrina:

The nominees for our favorite card wrappur or box are: the NASCAR Wheels Main Event 2011 trading cards by Press Pass, with our favoritest driver Danica Patrick in her Green & Black fire suit on the package; the Thundercats trading cards by Bandai with Cheetara, Lion-O, Panthro & Tygra on the wrappurr,  the Hello Kitty Sticker Album by Panini; the Star Wars Clone Wars Adventures trading card game by Topps with Ahsoka, Anakin & Obi-Wan on the box; and the Magic: The Gathering boxes with the Liliana Vess, Chandra Nalaar and Ajani Goldmane illustrations by Christopher Moeller, nya!

Katherine:

The 2011 Thundercats cartoon was a big hit with us, and the Catgirl Critics have reviewed some of the epurrsodes and the toys, nya! The Series 1 of the 2.5″ x 3.5″ cards is compurrised of the 68 common cards and the 12 rare cards, with 7 common cards and 1 rare foil card purr pack, nya! There are the various sub-sets within the total series 1 set including the art collection of various illustrations, the character collection depicting the individual heroes and villains, the scene collection of the screen captures from the epurrsodes, and the puzzle collection which forms the larger scenes, nya!

Kitrina:

I am still trying to fill the complete set, but my favorite card thus far is card 1-05, which is the foil card of Cheetara, nya! The background, her Thunderian emblem and her eyes are the foil part, so her eyes are reflective like the cat’s eyes, heehee, nya!

Katherine:

The collectible card game Magic: The Gathering by Wizards of the Coast continued to dazzle us with the beautiful artistry in 2011, nya! There are several images from their Planes Walker sets which we were purrticularly fascinated by such as the Christopher Moeller illustrations of Liliana Vess, Chandra Nalaar and the Sylvan Ranger; the magnificent landscapes by John Avon and Rob Alexander, nya!

Kitrina:

The cards also depicted the sweeping plains envisioned by DJ Cleland-Hura and Ryan Pancoast; the swamplands by Larry Elmore, Alex Horley and Jim Pavelec, the lush forests by Jim Nelson and Steven Belledin; the enchanting islands by Fred Fields and Eric Peterson; and the majestic mountains by Karl Kopinski and Nils Hamm, nya!

Katherine:

Lurking in the Green bordered Garruck deck is the Arbor Elf by RH Post, in the Black bordered Liliana deck is Liliana’s Caress by Steve Argyle, in the depths of the Blue boredered Jace deck are the Diminish spell with the kitty by Eric Deschamps, and in the Red Chandra deck is Chandra’s Spitfire Elemental by Justin Sweet, nya!

Kitrina:

In the White bordered Ajani deck are the Serra Angel by Greg Staples, Dawnglow Invoker by Steve Argyle, Soul’s Attendant by Steve Presscott, and the Solemn Offering illustrated by Sam Wood, nya! That is just the tip of our favoritest images on the cards the many great artists, nya!

Katherine:

Nyow we will go from the card games to the electronic games, nya! It was the unanimous decision that our favoritest game of 2011 for the iPad was Kokono, the fun & educational math game by Meganesoft, who also designed the Froggy Math game, nya!

Kitrina:

Kokono is the lovely looking game of the math puzzles, nya! It supports all of the ipad orientations, so you can play it with the screen vertically or horizontally, nya! it is so purretty with the 5 different graphics themes, and the mewsic library in the game, nya! It has the multiple play modes including the training mode with the built in help feature, over 20 different boards, randomly generated boards, and you can create and play your own boards, with the customizable panel positions and the background colors too, nya!

Katherine:

For more information, you can visit Meganesoft’s official Kokono site http://www.mindspring.com/~torajima/meganesoft_games/kokono/Kokono.html nya! Nyow to continue the electronic games, here are Clan of the Cats’ Chesea Urania Kate Chattan & Sebastian the cat, who were among the Guests of the August 2007 Mew to present the nominees for

Our Favorite PC Game of 2011, nya!

Chelsea:

(wearing the little black dress and necklace from Kasumi: Stolen Memories DLC from Mass Effect 2)

Uhhh … where’s the teleprompter?

Sebastian:

(wearing bow tie)

We don’t use those here.

Chelsea:

What am I going to say?  I don’t play video games.  What am I doing here?

Sebastian:

Wearing that dress. *wink*

Chelsea:

Ugghh!

Sebastian:

Moving along, The four nominees for our favorite PC game of 2011 are Batman: Arkham City in which The Dark Knight returns to face off against an entire city of nefarious ne’er-do-wells in this action packed game by Rock Steady;  Dead Island because when hell on earth comes to paradise, the name of the game is survival at all costs in this four person co-op by Techland;

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim where you live another life as you fight dragons, battle in a civil war, become a werewolf, chop wood and so much more in this epic RPG from Bethesda; and Star Wars: The Old Republic where you choose your side! Battle as a Light side Trooper, Jedi or Smuggler or fight for the dark side as a Sith, Inquisitor, or Bounty Hunter in this highly anticipated MMO from BioWare.

Chelsea:

And our favorite PC game of 2011 is… The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim! With its sweeping vistas, 300+ hours of gameplay and freeform play, Skyrim may just be one of the best RPGs ever made. The main quest isn’t that great and the characters aren’t that compelling, but in what other game can you stalk a deer for days, fight a dragon, save a village and simply take a ride in the mountains on your horse.

No other game comes close to creating its own world in which the play can not only be enjoyed, but really lived. For that reason, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is our pick for PC game of 2011! That concludes the computer game category, but for more of the electronics, here are Rica & NIko to purrsent the–

Hai hai, we are only discussing the standard Region One DVDs, not the Blu-Ray disks, and this purrtains to what all you get on the disk or boxed set, so it is more about the packaging, the special features, the bonuses, and the value for the purrice, not the movie or TV show itself!

(wearing the Indigo colored Jellycups top and a Blue Calathea in her hair) Hola! This is a whale of a category although we are not necessarily endorsing or promoting any of the companies, purroducts or services advertised in these spots! We just like the commercials for numerous reasons, such as the humor, FX, stunts, critters, music, cinematography, or celebrities we like!

Ceresatami:

The noms are: Drew Barrymore & Ellen Degeneres for CoverGirl cosmetics, Puss in Boots for Purrina Friskies cat food, Kim Cattrall for the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter spread, Jackie Chan for the V-8 Smoothie drink, Andie MacDowell for L’Oreal cosmetics, Gizem Memic for Hardees,

Tsuruku:

Our noms for 2011 involved the outdoor aquatic type sports! They are the United Health Care with the mom & daughter enjoying the surfing, the Subaru “Share the Love” car commercial with the surfer in the pro-manatee shirt, and Geico’s “That’s Amazing” spot with the angler and the mermaid!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Of course, at Sheila May’s Restuarant we have the interest in the cuisine, and the noms for favorite food & drink commercials are: the 3D animated Strawberry Pop Tarts “Made for fun” commercial with the dancing redhead mommy and her three kids;

The noms for our favorite movie, TV & video game purreview trailers from 2011 includes trailers for ones that came out in 2011, and ads for ones coming out this year! We will start with the video game trailers! The Skyrim trailer was so impressive that we thought it was a movie!

Nyssy:

Two good ways to get us interested in a TV commercial is to use lovely animation, whether it is the drawn, stop-motion, or CG type; or to include pretty music! It could be the metal, jazzy, hip hop, country, symphonic, techno, or whatever is the catchy tune!

Tsuruku:

For the animation, the 4 noms are: the Strawberry Pop Tarts “Made for fun” commercial; the Met Life insurance advertisements starring Snoopy; the Friskies “Feed the Senses” cat food commercial with Puss in Boots & the real cat; and Chevron’s “Best Friend” commercial with the stop-motion Pink car & her owner in the driveway!

For the musical aspect, the 4 more noms are: the Heineken “Entrance” commercial with “The Golden Age” song; the Electrolux appliances commercials with Kelly Ripa & the “BewiTched” theme; and the Honda Civic commercial with Tania Gunadi as the perky masked “hoodie ninja girl”!

Ceresatami:

The feline presence can add the sense of playful fun and excitement to the TV commercial, from the widdlest kitten to the biggest jungle cat! The noms for our Favorite TV Commercial  of 2011 with the Cat in it are:

Every month, The Mew purrsents its delicious list of favorite Fish Photos & Appurrtizing Aquatic Images from the numerous angling, aquarium, diving, science & culinary purriodicals, nya! Since this topic tends to tantalize the catgirls’ tummies and thus induce the cravings, there will be the short intermission after this catty-gory so that the audience can politely carefully make their way to the sushi bars & food carts on the main & mezzanine levels, nya!

Leilani:

The anticipation is already making us hungry so please bear with us, nya! To expurrdite the intermission, we won’t list all of the 4 dozen angling magazines, 9 aquarium magazines, the half dozen diving magazines, and the culinary magazines that were nominated, but our top picks for the piscine pics of 2011 were, nya:

Alanasera:

Adventure Fishing, Aquarium Fish International, Blue Water Boats & Sport Fishing, Coral, Florida Sportsman, Guy Harvey magazine, In-Fisherman, North Carolina Game & Fish, North Carolina Sportsman, Purractical Fishkeeping, Scuba Diver, Sport Diver, Sport Fishing, Tropical Fish Hobbyist nya…

Kai:

… and our our most favoritest purriodical of 2011 purrtaining to the marine life was.. GAFF (Gulf atlantic Florida Fishing) magazine, nya! We can hear the tempted tummies wanting to be filled with the numcious treats, but we have just a couple more honorable mentions before the break, nya!

Jesi:

Gracing the covers of several magazines in 2011 was one of our favoritest actresses Zoe Saldana, who we admired as  Anamarie in Pirates of the Caribbean, as Delores in The Terminal, as Uhura in the 2009 Star Trek movie, and especially as the catgirl from Pandora, Na’vi Purrincess Ney’tiri te Tskaha Mo’at’ite in James Cameron’s Avatar, nya!

Leilani:

She was on the cover of Star Trek Magazine #31, the September cover of Ebony, the front & back September covers of Women’s Health, Latina Magazine vol. 15 #10, and as Neytiri on the cover of Home Theater Purrsents Avatar, nya!

Alanasera:

Finally for this cattygory, there are 10 purrticular issues of certain titles from 2011 which we felt were deserving of the extra recognition: D20 Girls Fall 2011 issue with our friend Chainmail Chick who was the guest of The Mew in May 2010, Doctor Who Magazine #440’s Elizabeth Sladen tribute, nya…

Kai:

ESPN’s annual Body Issue, Faerie magazine #22, Faeries and Enchantment  #15, ImagineFX #67 with the Catwoman cover by Adam Hughes, nya…

Jesi:

Our Blue Marble’s purremier issue, October Coastal issue, Sports Illustrated’s 2011 Swimsuit Issue, and Triad Happy Tails July 2011 issue, nya!

Leilani:

That concludes the magazines catty-gory, but after the intermission we will return with the comics cattygory, nya!

Leilani, Alanasera, Kai & Jesi:

Itadakimasu, nya!

2nd Intermission

(snip)(after the 2nd intermission…)

Mike:

Welcome back! Hey let’s hear it for the art center staff & volunteers for their wonderful work! Now let’s welcome Elizabeth & Becca from the island healthy massage Spa to present the-

Favorite Comic Books, Strips & Manga of 2011!

Elizabeth

(in the Green Scuppurrnong purrint dress) Arigato! 2011 was quite an eventful year for the comics, between so many movies based upon the comics, and the big reboot of DC Comics which sadly resulted in the cancellation of several favorite titles such as Gotham City Sirens, Power Girl, and Zatanna! Since then Zee’s been appurring in Justice League Dark, but it is not as fun or stylish as her own purrevious comic was.

Becca:

(in the little Black cocktail dress) Hai that was the shame because the final 2 issues of Power Girl were the best issues since the first 12 issues! She has not been seen since the reboot though.

Elizabeth

Hai! Well we will miss those three DC titles, although there has been one recent mini-series starring DC characters we have enjoyed for the past few months, and that is the Star Trek / Legion of Super Heroes crossover between DC and IDW! Speaking of comics based upon TV shows and other purropurrties, we have been very happy with Dark Horse Comics’ Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel & Faith, and Mass Effect: Invasion! Dark Horse Purresents has been the dandy anthology series too!

Becca:

Meanwhile, our favoritest Marvel comic in recent years is the awesome Avengers Academy! Marvel’s cute widdle tennis miniseries 15 Love was nice too! We continue to enjoy Archie Comics too, and I was pleased to purrchase the Sabrina the Teenage Witch The Magic Revisited repurrints of her manga style stories, and the special Archie: 50 Times An American Icon trade papurr back!

Elizabeth:

Among our favorite comics of 2011 by other publishers were IDW’s Red Sonja, Broadsword’s Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose, Aspen Comics’ Fathom, GG Studio’s Mediterranea, and the comics in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars magazine! Speaking of the wars, ! Last year we were also lucky to get a glimpse at Wayne Vansant ‘s graphic novel Katusha, about a Russian soldier girl in World War II, and we hope that will be available here soon!

Becca:

Fantagraphics continues to publish the purrofound Complete Peanuts series, and in 2011 the series reached the peanuts strips of the 1980s! Once again, Yen purroved to be our favorite publisher of Japanese manga, with titles such as Spice and Wolf, Omamori Himari, Ichiroh, Sunshine Sketch, and K-ON! However, we also have to commend Vertical for the Chi’s Sweet Home, whose cute widdle kitten purrotagonist won the special place in our hearts!

Elizabeth:

Nyow it is the moment to purrmote the publications by the small purress publishers and the web comics collections that were very special to us in 2011! We were so very happy with Sorcery 101 Book 1 by Kel McDonald http://sorcery101.net/; the Winter legend Art Booklet by Jamie Jennings http://winterlegend.com/,

Ellaine Corvidae’s purrose novels & Riven Sol web comic http://www.elainecorvidae.com/, Sanzaki Kojika’s Zos Kias series http://s-kojika.com/PDI/, Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki by Kittyhawk http://www.sgvy.com/, Mythical Magick and Purrfect Adventures by Mourning Daily http://www.mourningdaily.com/!

Becca:

2011 was a good year for the tales of the cats & dogs in comics, such as Dark Horse Purrsents’ Beasts of Burden, Chi’s Sweet Home, Mr. Purrfect, Clan of the Cats’ Sebo, Supurrman’s dog Krypto, and Wonder Woman’s oracle kitty Galenthias! Sadly it was a rough year for the The Cheetah and Catwoman at DC Comics, and for Marvel Comics’ wolf girl Rahne Sinclair and the catgirl ghost of Feral. We hope that things will purrk up for them in 2012!

Elizabeth:

On the dinosaur note, it was a purretty traumatic year for Reptil at Avenger’s Academy, between the clashes with The Hood, The Cobalt Men, Korvac, Arcade, Psycho Man, The Sinister Six, Nazis, Titania, Absorbing Man, Magneto, Hybrid, the destruction of the Mansion, the school purrom and other purroblems that teenagers face!

Fortunately the woes were not as lethal for our dino friend Ajax and his best friend Simone, but from the last postcard we saw, Simone continued to stir up the mischief with Santa Claus again in Simone & Ajax by Andrew Pepoy and Chris http://www.pepoy.com/! Andrew is our favoritest inker and he was a special guest in December 2008!

Becca:

Simone had better watch out! Nyow let’s welcome to the tank stage Daytona & Lourdessaluorno of the mermaid surf patrol, and faithful search & rescue manatee Avana-ruru to purrsent our picks for the

Tash & Michi:

(smiling at the podium) Thanks for having us!

Michi:

(wearing an orange princess-style dress with black sash, choker and ribbons in hair) Boy, this place is starting to get very familiar.

Tash:

(wearing a simple navy blue evening gown) Any more familiar, I’d have to convert one of the dressing rooms into our own personal walk-in closet.

Michi:

Walk-in closet? Don’cha mean walk-in play room? There’s so many plushies, toys and collectibles, I would never need to visit a toy store again!

Tash:

Spoken just like a kid. *mock sighs*

Michi:

Truer words were never spoken… *playfully sticks tongue out at Tash*

Tash:

Moving on to the subject at hand – The nominees for Favorite Plush Toy of 2011 are…

Michi:

Mezco’s Zombie Creepy Cuddlers Death Mittens plushie – Ever since I heard of it, I want one!

Tash:

It’s only been a month since you heard of it in last month’s edition of The Mew… and you want one? Just plain ‘Creepy’…

Michi:

But it’s so cuddly!  Besides, it’s not like I’d be seeing it on a daily bases. *waves hand in front of sightless eyes, then sticks out tongue again*

Tash:

Hmm… We’ll see.  Cracker Barrel has a plush out called Full of Mischief Cat Sitter… Ah, if only it was a real cat sitter, would love to have a night out on the town all to myself.

Michi:

Wouldn’t Brian be your ‘cat sitter’? *gives a ‘knowing look’ in Tash’s general direction*  He is ‘full of mischief’…

Tash:

*clears throat, light blush colors cheeks* Let’s leave him outta this. We’re talking plushies, not Hyenas.

Michi:

*under her breath, in a sing-song voice* Tash & Brian sitting in a tree… *in normal voice* Next is a series of plushy Hello Kitty dolls with different fruity aromas.

Tash:

Mmm… and smelling ’em makes me hungry for the actual fruit. And finally, the last nomination for Favorite Plush Toy is Dolly Purrton by Alexcia Reynolds.

Michi:

We met Dolly Purrton at the fair once!  Her hair was to die – erm, dye – for! Not that I’d actually bleach and curl my hair, but I loved the chance to run my fingers through her hair!

Tash:

And the winner is… *opens envelope, reads card* I don’t believe this…

Michi:

Hmm?

Tash:

*whispers in Michi’s ear*

Tash & MIchi:

*shreds card & envelope* All of ’em! *tosses pieces of card & envelope as if it was confetti*

Michi:
