Mike:

(the guy wearing the white Aria Anime T shirt, Khaki shorts, Mizuno trainers, & Catgirl island baseball cap) Aloha and welcome to the “Tides of March” edition of The Mew for our monthly discussions, reviews & recommendations! Today’s show comes from aboard Captain Vonny’s yacht off the coast of the Island!

Some of our regular critics could not be with us today; Myar, Lizzy & Becca are busy between the shrine and the health spa; Nyoka, Rica & Nico are busy with their shops at the farmers’ market; Ilyana had to return to the mainland for her thesis studies, and Mielikki is in the Himalayas competing in a golf tournament!

We certainly wish them luck with those activities! We are so fortunate that several of our regulars could be with us today despite their own hectic schedules, and we’re also joined by four of the mermaids from Sheila May’s Restaurant! I’m Mike, the show’s ‘Purrducer’, and here are The Ladies of The Mew!

Jeannie:

Kianalani:

Guten Tag!

Mike:

So what has everyone been up to since last month’s show?

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Gosh it is hard to believe it has already been a month since the big awards show! Since then I have been mainly devoting the times to the restaurant, my camera club and helping at the sea dragon shelter. I have been putting in the extra hours to teach the the junior Sommeleir course. However, speaking of the awards, Lani here won a Barista award!

the catgirls cheer:

Banzai Banzai Banzai, nya!

Kianalani:

Arigato! It was the big honor against such steep competition! Aside from that it has been the time with the restaurant, the camera club, the ikebana club and the shelter!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Oh y’all should dive down sometime soon and see the expanded shelter where we care for the widdle sea dragons – they are so cute!

Petra:

Kawaii, nya! They have the kind sanctuary, nya! So tell us what else you have been doing, nya!

Melanakeami:

Oh gosh I am so excited, because we finally found a balloonist with the basket that could be filled with the water so I am going on the hot air balloon ride for my birthday! Squee!

the catgirls cheer:

yatahhh, nya!

Yvonne:

So how difficult is it to fill the basket, nya?

Melanakeami:

Oh gosh there is already the weight of the envelope, the basket, the burners, the tanks, the other equipment, and the people! It is the large AX capacity balloon!

Jeannie:

The robotics club can send a drone along to photograph the occasion.

Melanakeami:

Sugoi!

Yvonne:

Since the awards show it has been the more normal time for my drumming circle and the fishing charters, nya! Lately we have caught the nice Groupurrs, Snappurrs, Stripurrs, Wahoos, Blues, Drums, Kings, Yellowfins, Sea Bass, and imoto here caught the big Croakers yesterday, nya!

Tara-chan:

Hai they were yummy for suppurr, nya! I have been caring for the kittens, helping with the yacht, keeping up with the studies, the purractice at the dojo, and – and my nature journal, nya! Onee-san gave more packs of the Thundercats trading cards, so nyow I am closer to the full set, nya! I got another Cheetara foil card and – and I completed another of the card puzzles, nya!

Nyanko:

Good luck with the collection!

Tara-chan:

Arigato, nya! What have Nya-sensei & Jenjen been up to, nya?

Jeannie:

It is the busy time for the kyudo club and my belly dance troupe, but I have continued the yoga, the mewsings and the modeling. Nya-sensei and I will have the swim wear photo shoot at Ilha Grande Island. Then I will need to hurry back for the robotics club derby, and to upgrade the sensors on Ilyana’s ROV for her next wreck dive.

Nyanko:

Hai I am looking forward to the Rio trip! Oh not much else new with me aside from the dojo, the kittens, and helping my sister with her magick shop, although I am often mistaken for her when I am there, heehee! By the way, she is very enthusiastically purrparing for the next tattoo art show at the mewseum!

Petra:

Hai I anticipate the biggest crowd! She and Bun are mainly in charge of that even but I understand that Nyssy is assisting with the event too!

Nyssy:

Hai, Nela & Lani are going to photograph it, and Tara-chan will be volunteering at the show too!

Tara-chan:

Yatahh I am going to have the tempurrary tattoos of the stripes, nya!

Nyssy:

I have already asked off work for some of those days! Aside from the show & the restaurant & the shelter we just had our scrap booking circle! Nella & Lani are going to photograph the show!

Kianalani:

We still have to hear from Petra and Mike!

Mike:

The biggest thing of the past month for me was WhatTheHell?! Con, which I’ll expound upon shortly, but otherwise it’s been the usual art, writing, reading, watching movies, anime, Tarheel hoops and time with dear friends!

Nyssy:

What anime did you watch?

Mike:

Oh there was The Secret World of Arrietty at the theater, and the DVDs have included Gunbuster and Bamboo Blade!

the catgirls:

(Bamboo Blade inspired Kendo yell) MENNNN, NYA!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

We have been re-watching My Hime in preparation for the spotlight portion of the show!

Melanakeami:

Next in the queue will be K-On!

Yvonne:

That is a recent favorite manga, nya! Oh I’m sorry we need to let Petra reveal her recent events, nya!

Petra:

Bun and I have been busy curating those mew exhibits and tending to the island art council meetings, and soon we report to the rec league beach volleyball sprurring training, nya! Then we plan to settle down for the regular anime night too! We have the agenda narrowed down to Kiddy Grade, The Third, Moon Phase, and Please teacher, nya!

Kianalani:

Please tell us about the latest art display!

Petra:

OK here are the latest

Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, nya!

In Art Gallery Four http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery4.html are the pics of the “TARDIS File Cabinet”, nya! For those who might be unfamiliar with the TARDIS, in the wonderful BBC science fiction TV series Doctor Who, the hero’s space / time vehicle is called the TARDIS which was disguised to look like a British Police Box in 1963, but it got stuck in that form, nya!

By the way, Doctor Who is copyright by The British Broadcasting Corporation, nya. When a friend of ours wanted a file cabinet for his birthday purresent, so our friend ob1 – who was a special guest of The Mew in October 2007 – purchased the nice sturdy 5′ tall metal cabinet, which Mike then surpurrise customized to resemble the TARDIS, nya!

So it is the fan gift creation and certainly not for the purrchase, nya. The non – functional TARDIS lamp on the top was made of a glass jar and bits of hardware, and it is removable so that our friend could stack things on top or so that his cats will not knock it over, nya. Hopefully the cats will not try to get inside and pilot it through the time vortex, nya!

There are cat people in the TV series, such as Novice Hame who we commemorated in the February 2010 Mew, nya! The photos of the cabinet were taken by ob1 and Pacozord, composited against the Photoshopped planet background illustration by Mike, nya! Pacozord was also a special guest in October 2007, nya!

Nextly is Mike’s “Convention Catgirl Collage” which is the assortment compurrised of the re-creations of the sketches Mike drew at the recent conventions, nya! They are the re-creations because the clients got the art before it could be scanned, so Mike re-created the pics based upon the notes & widdle purreliminary doodles, nya!

From Left to Right: the Stringy Bikini Catgirl sketch, the jeweled Purrple Catgirl Cosplayer at WhatTheHell?! Con, the gift of fan art of Nepeta the Troll Cat Girl from Andrew Hussie’s web comic Homestuck http://www.mspaintadventures.com (a gift because Mike will not sell fan art); the nekomimi version of the cosplayer in leather at WhatTheHell?! Con, and the commissioned catgirl faerie sketch from NC Comicon, nya!

Finally of Mike’s mew art is this widdle sketch of the “Coastal Cafe Catgirl”, nya! She is serving the nummy muffins and the tasty fresh beverages, nya! Mmm the specials on the menu board sure sound yummy, nya! Oh nyow I have the craving for the cran apple nummy berry cocktail, and the extra special baked yams, which are the signature dish, nya!

That is all of Mike’s mew art but nyow we will purroceed to the art by other folks in Guest Gallery Two http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html, nya! The Guest galleries contain the lovely art by other artists, with their kind purrmissions of course, and nyow we are purroud to purrsent this pic of “Natalie & Amanda” by Niki Lemonade, nya!

She was a special guest here in November 2008, nya! Mike commissioned this cute sketch of Niki’s characters wearing the colorful yukatas for the festival, nya! Natalie is on the left and Amanda is on the right, nya. They are the purrotagonists of Niki’s wonderful web comic My Fake Heart http://myfakeheart.smackjeeves.com/, nya!

Next we have the trio assortments by Neesa & Doug Chapman of Dragons Entwined Studio http://freetezomea.com, nya! The first trio are the anthropomorphic characters of “Spindle, Merla & Kokuhaku” by Doug, nya! Spindle is the cyborg catgirl, Merla is purrpared for the adventures in the deep, and Kokuhaku is the foxy kitsune, mew la-la, nya!

The 2nd trio are “Yara, Callie & Boiler” by Doug, nya! These girls are among the crew of the pirate airship pirates Heaven’s Blessing, in Neesa & Doug Chapman’s serialized purrose steam punk fantasy adventure Pirates of Tezomea, nya! Yara is the savage feral 1st mate, Callie is the actress who recently joined the crew, and Boiler is the chief engineer, nya!

The 3rd trio are the cute pics of “Callie, Collin & Veronica” by Neesa, nya! Veronica Silversong is the actress for whom Calliope Winters was the understudy purrior to joining the pirates, and Collin is the dashing debonaire crewman, nya! You can read Pirates of Tezomea and see more of Neesa & Doug’s art, photography & the purroducts at their fun site, nya!

Melanakeami:

I will be reviewing Pirates of Tezomea later in the show, nya!

Tara-chan:

Keami likes the airships, nya!

Melanakeami:

Hai!

Nyanko:

Yara has the powerful physique!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

I bet Boiler would like Jen’s work shop!

Jeannie:

Indeed. I would like to examine the charming antique steam punk tech as well.

Kianalani:

Merla has the graceful tail!

Yvonne:

Spindle & Kokuhaku have the sexy fishnets, mew la la, nya!

Nyssy:

Kokuhaku has the lovely piercings too!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Callie has the nice opera gloves too!

Tara-chan:

Natalie has the cute freckles, nya!

Kianalani:

She and Amanda have the good grassy spot for the festivities!

Jeannie:

The catgirl faerie with the sheer wings & tiered tutu is very purretty.

Yvonne:

Oh I like the purrple catgirl’s shiny jewel belt, nya!

Tara-chan:

I like the hanging Heliconias in the cafe! They are fragrant and – and fun to paw at, nya!

Melanakeami:

The waitress has the cute off shoulder halter top!

Petra:

Purrhaps that pic will send folks to the mewseum’s cafe heehee nya!

Nyanko:

How did you make the caged lamp atop the TARDIS cabinet?

Mike:

Oh I just found the glass, the circular parts are from an outdoor light, plastic tubes for the vertical posts, and then just painted them to match the cabinet!

Nyssy:

So is that TARDIS cabinet bigger on the inside? Heehee!

Mike:

It wasn’t when we opened the file drawers! Well Petra, thank you for telling us about the art!

Petra:

Dooitasimaste, nya! That concludes the mewseum portion but nyow it is time for the

Event Reports:

WhatTheHell?! Con 2012, nya!

Mike:

WhatTheHellCon?! http://wthcon.guilcoyachting.org/! The 11th annual convention was a free event on the mainland in Greensboro NC, at the pretty Guilford College on the weekend of February 10- 12,  sponsored by the great folks of the Guilford College Yachting Club!

The staff & volunteers were so extremely friendly, attentive, gracious, communicative, smart, talented, industrious, and their excellent team work created such a joyful ambiance! The handy program booklet was quite concise, with the complete schedule grid, campus map, guest, vender & event information!

The con convened on the campus in the Duke & Dana buildings and the outdoor area between them. Dana housed the info / registration desk, artist alley room, silent auction in the lobby for the charity Child’s Play, and the auditorium for main events. Duke housed the dealers, gaming & video rooms, and another auditorium for discussion panels.

The Dana building is said to be haunted and I got to hear the tales, but I am yet to see any ghosts. The con started late that Friday afternoon, with guests & venders setting up their wares around 4 pm, the opening ceremony at 5:30, with the gaming & videos underway shortly thereafter!

Among the dealers were Buzzy Multimedia (shirts & books), Cardboard Stash (games & shirts), Chained Elegance (chainmail garments & jewelry), Clockwork Jungles (steampunk jewelry), Dragons Entwined Studios (their original books & art prints), Gorgious Chain (chain & scale mail), and Heroes Haven (various stuff)!

The special entertainment included the Knights of the European Medieval Arts of Arms (medieval sword fighting), Flaming Fairies (fire dance & juggling) performing outdoors, and The Blithering Humdingers, and Hawthorn & Holly (‘wizard rock’ Harry Potter mewsic & filk songs) performing in the Dana Auditorium.

I was very honored to be among the con’s guests again, which included other the artists & authors such as: The Devil’s Panties’ Jennie Breeden, My Fake Heart’s Niki Lemonade, Sorcery 101’s Kel McDonald, Finders Keepers’s Garth Graham, Furmentation’s Phillip Wright, Ubersoft’s Christopher B. Wright…

…Daytime Ghost Hunter’s Scott Smith, author / mythologist Theresa Bane, Glen Bane of Scaldcrow Games, author Davey Beauchamp, and comics writer / journalist Dan Johnson! Everyone was so talented and friendly! Jennie & Niki were guests of The Mew in November 2008, and Dan was our guest in December 2008!

The guests had tables in the artist alley room, which is normally a music room the rest of the year, selling their books, comics, cards, prints, original art, buttons, and various other trinkets! That’s where I spent much of my time at the con, at my table where I got a few sketches done and got to chat with so many nice folks!

By 10 am that brisk nippy clear Saturday morning the con resumed, as the EMAA knights commenced their exciting melee demonstrations, while in Duke’s Leak Room auditorium the discussion panels ensued. Topics included anime, medieval instruments, Doctor Who, Geek Skills, and the panel with all of the guests!

It was such a merry & festive day. with the wizard rock concert on the stage in the Dana auditorium, lots of gaming, videos, neat stuff for sale, lots of beautiful art, and the cosplayers! The costumes ranged from the medieval, gothy, steampunk & belly dance to Doctor Who, Star Wars, Harry Potter & comics characters!

It was quite the fashionable scene with folks in the awesome boots, kilts, corsets, chain mail, lovely dresses, and the cat ears! It was good to see model / cosplayer Chainmail Chick who was our special guest in May 2010, and met model / belly dancer Violet Arcane who we saw at Pagan Pride in September!

They have both modeled for the art prints & calendars of our friend Alan Welch, who was our guest in September 2009! Other familiar friendly faces included the prior years’ attendees, and several staff members of other regional conventions such as Stellar Con and Illogicon!

There was a fun lacrosse match going on at the athletic field near Dana, although that was not actually part of the con! After a delicious supper at a nearby Thai restaurant, we headed back for the con’s biggest event, the zany Geek Auction! It was tasteful jolly fun for a good cause to benefit the Child’s Play charity!

Among the talents were the catgirl’s nyan dance, and Jennie stalking the kilts with the leaf blower! After that dance started at 10 pm in the lobby, but I don’t tend to stick around for that. The brief stroll to my car was quite chilling, not from any ghosts but because the night’s windy temperature got below 20!

I returned around 9:30 am on Sunday morning with doughnuts and fruit to share, and it was a much more relaxed day with not quite as many in attendance, but quite pleasant nonetheless! If it were not quite so windy it would have felt like a sunny clear early Spring day!

Before I knew it, it was already the afternoon, and time for the Harry Potter Trivia, which was followed by the Closing Ceremonies at 3:30. A lot of folks had already left, and the con staff was quite diligent in tidying up the place. I hope the college administration knows just how awesome the Guilford College Yachting Club is!

They are the nicest, cheerful, industrious folks, and I could not have had a better time…  well, except for maybe Saturday night’s windy low temperature… and I would like to heartily thank all of the staff, volunteers, venders, attendees, and fellow guests who made WhatTheHellCon?! yet another wonderful, special, fun time!

Jeannie:

That is all for our event reports and for this portion of the The mew, but after the short break we’ll be right back with–

This Month’s Lightning Round Topic:

Favorite Female Comics Characters of the Aquatic Purrsuasion or Purrofession

(snip) (one short break later…)

Jeannie:

Welcome back. The Comics Buyer’s Guide http://www.cbgxtra.com/ is one of the oldest, most purrominent  publications about comic books! It is one of our all time favorites because it so informative & entertaining, neither too shallow nor too snobby, repurrsenting all facets of the comics industry with contributions by the creators, publishers, retailers, historians & fans.

It is edited with great enthusiasm & expurrtise by Maggie Thompson. In the January Mew we reviewed their special book, Comics Buyer’s Guide Purrsents 100 Sexiest Women in Comics. That in turn later sparked the discussion, but of course, as with any lists of popular opinions, there will be the surpurrises as to who was included and who was not.

Petra:

There were a few aspects of the interesting book that we were rather curious about, nya! For example, We don’t know what the eligibility criteria was for their top 100 list, although we did notice that it was compurrised of only characters from US comic books, so none of the manga, manwha or the European graphic novels were repurrsented, nya!

Also, we noticed that here were not even any “manga style” nor anthropomorphic characters from American comics, nor any women from comics based on movies, TV, games or toys, nya! After discussing the fascinating book, were inspired to make our own lists, nya!

Mike:

We wound up with a several hundred nominees, which needless to say would be too lengthy for Lightning Round purposes, which is supposed to go fast with the quick responses! However, upon further analysis, we did notice several tendencies amongst the nominations!

Tara-chan:

Hai for example, we noticed how some of them were grouped by the vote, nya! There were sorceresses, purrincesses, martial artists, goddesses, supurr heroines, gynoids, swordswomen, elves, faerie girls, archer girls, jungle girls, purrehistoric girls, demon girls, anthropurrmorphic girls… and – and the aquatic girls, nya! Given how much of the surface of this planet is watery, and – and the however other many other watery alien worlds there are, we were surpurrised how few aquatic girls made the CBG Top 100 list, nya!

Yvonne:

Of course there were not that many catgirls on the list either, aside from Tigra / Greer Garson, Cat Woman / Selina Kyle, Black Cat / Linda Turner & Black Cat / Felicia Hardy…but of the aquatic girls, there were only four on that list: Fathom’s Dr. Aspen Matthews at #46, DC Comics’ mermaid Lori Lemaris at #71, Marvel Comics’ Namora at #76, & DC Comics’ Mera at #81… if you don’t count Storm who who could purrobably create the tsunami, nya!

Nyanko:

Therefore, in honor of our mermaid guest critics, today’s Lightning Round topic purrtains to our favorite aquatic themed female characters who did not make that CBG list! However for our own list, we are allowing such characters of comics from any country, whether it is the comic book, the comic strip or the web comic, and allow for the comics based upon other media! So without the further expurrsition, ‘Lani will conduct the lightning first! (tags Kianalani to start the Lightning Round)

the catgirls:

LIGHTNING ROUND GO, NYA!

Kianalani:

Ah well I might be impartial but I really liked the comics based upon Disney’s The Little Mermaid with Ariel & her sisters & friends; and the mermaid princesses of the Mermaid Pichy Pichy Pich manga! Ariel just got a new cute little colt named Beau in the March issue of the Disney Princesses Magazine! (tags Petra)

Petra:

My aqua pics are Junko Mizuno’s Mermaid Purrincess, Erica Reis’ Sea Princess Azuri, and Minuee from Thierry Cailleteau’s AquaBlue, nya! (tags Ne’ellakaliomi)

Ne’ellakaliomi:

I will vote for Soap & Lia of the Mermaid Hostel http://www.mermaidhostel.com/ web comic by Jen Vaughn; Gold & Kalua of the Namaka Hamou http://www.sailorenergy.net/ web comic by Jeffry Anderson, and Shizuku of the Omamori Himari manga! I’ll be discussing her a bit later in the review! (tags Yvonne)

Tara-chan:

Yatah nya! I like… I like Sailor Mercury Ami Mizuno, of Lettuce of Tokyo Mew Mew; and – and Tillaweed, Brill & Krill of Elfquest’s Wave Dancers, but I like all of the Wave Dancers, nya! (tags Melanakeami)

Melanakeami:

I think my top five would be…  DC Comics’ Tsunami, Deep Blue, Dolphin…and Aqua Girls Tula & Loren! (tail tags Nyssy)

Nyssy:

Don’t forget DCs’ Ulla Paske, Queen Clea, Tethys, Naiad, and Keiki! (tags Jeannie)

Tara-chan:

Which one is Keiki, nya?

Nyssy:

Oh she was the cute mermaid on the date with Dirk in Legionnaires!

Tara-chan:

Arigato nya! Who will Jen nominate, nya?

Jeannie

Kiani, Anya and Eliah of Michael Turner’s Fathom, and I am curious to see what develops with Dr. Padma Singh. Your turn, Vonny. (tags Yvonne)

Yvonne:

I will nominate Marvel Comics’ Lady Dorma, Andromeda, Nia Noble, Marrina Smallwood, Alani ‘Loa’ Ryan, and Namorita, nya! I liked ‘Nita when she was in her Kymaera purrsona too nya! Your turn, Mike, nya (tags Mike)

Mike:

Ah… The Futurians’ Tracy ‘Silkie’ Winters created by Dave Cockrum, The Elementals’ Rebecca ‘Fathom’ Golden created by Bill Willingham, and Idol’s Rachel Ahmed by Gerard Jones, Ron Randall, Rick Magyar, Steve Mattsson & Joe Costanza! Ah, back to you Nya-sensei!

Nyanko:

Hai! I would like to add to the impurressive list Maya ‘Nautika’ Royko of Stormwatch, Lady Ruliyah of Yukito Kishiro’s Aqua Knight, and I kinda liked that exotic tough mermaid in Jim Balent’s Tarot #70 & 71, which we reviewed a few months ago!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Nya-sensei, We were curious about the eligibility! What if the water aspect is specifically ice?

Kianalani:

And what about the shape – changers who are only aquatic on the occasions?

Nyanko:

As long as the ice is the frozen water and not another substance, I don’t see why not… and as for the shape – changer, they could be the honorary candidate!

Melanakeami:

So then we could include DC heroines Tora ‘Ice’ Olafsdotter & Sigrid ‘Ice maiden Nansen!

Nyssy:

And the evil Killer Frosts Crystal Frost & Louise Lincoln!

Petra:

Oh then I wish to nominate the Yuki Onna snow women, such as Urusei Yatsura’s Purrincess Oyuki, Rosario + Vampire’s Mizore, and Kanokon’s Yukihana, nya!

Yvonne:

And Clamp’s Shirahime Sho Snow Goddess Tales, nya!

Tara-chan:

Who are the shape – changers, nya?

Kianalani:

I was considering Scenturus, the changeling star of Fred Diana’s Night Realm Comics! She became the mermaid, the naga and the winged centaur!

Tara-chan:

Can Nyoka – sensei do that, nya?

Nyanko:

Ah hah well you would have to ask her about that!

Jeannie:

I would also like the ruling on the eligibility. What of the terrestrial humans of the nautical purrofession?

Nyanko:

It is allowed!

Jeannie:

Ami of Shiki Satoshi’s Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, and the undines Akari, Alicia, Aika, Akira, Alice & Athena of Kozue Amano’s Aria.

Melanakeami:

Aria!!!

Nyssy:

I do sure wish volume 7 of Aria would be published!

Petra:

Hai we picked Aria as our favoritest manga & anime series of the past decade, nya!

Yvonne:

Ah, are there any other amendments, nya?

Nyanko:

Oh I will like to include Belit the pirate of the Conan series, and Serra the pirate of Tellos! OK I’m done!

Mike:

Well I think that was a fine list! Thank you for conducting the lightning, Nya-sensei!

the mermaids:

Arigato gozaimasu!

Nyanko:

Dooitasimaste! That will conclude the Lightning Round, and up next it is time for Vonny to start this months

Purriodicals Purrings:

Yonne:

Hai, this is the portion of The Mew in which we mention our favorite recent photos of the delicious looking fish & other seafoods adorning the front covers o the various magazines, such as the wonderful Walleye on the cover of West Virginia Game & Fish vol. 2012 #1, and the beautiful Bonefish on the Winter cover of Fly Rod & Reel, nya!

Comics Critiques & Manga Mewsings

…with Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi #0 & 1, nya!

Tara-chan:

Hai, this will be the double portion, nya! We are fans of Star Wars too, and – and I am purrticularly fond of The Clone Wars series, nya! For last year’s Halloween Trick R Eat & Cosplay Purrowl our group cosplay was of the Star Wars theme, so I have been looking forward to this Star Wars mew mini – series, nya!

This will be the purrequel story set a lot earlier than the Clone Wars; it is 36,000 years purrior to Star Wars Epurrsode IV, nya! It is the mythic era before the Old Republic and even before the hypurr space travel or before the Jedi or the Sith were figured out, and this issue is the handy widdle purrimer guide to the era, nya!

It has the purrice of $3.50, 28 pages including the 6 pages of the ads, it was written by John Ostrander and illustrated by Jan Duursema who is one of our favoritest artists,  and – and it has the lovely cover art by Rodolfo Miglari, nya! The interior art is compurrised of the sketches, and – and the colorful CG renderings, nya!

Among this handy widdle guide are the pics of the characters such as the purrecursor Jedi types called the Je’daii, Je’daii Rangers Rori Fenn and – and Hawk Ryo; Temple Masters Kora Ryo, Quan – Jang, Thok Rath, and – and Tem Madog; Tash Ryo and- and Shae Koda the adventurers in their purretty outfits, nya!

The issue also includes the Sithy types, the Rakaton Empire; Trill and – and Xesh the Force hunters; the pyramid shaped Tho Yor space ships, the various other air ships, the planet Tython and – and the other settled worlds, nya! These are such amazing designed images, so I was eager for the story to start in #1, nya!

Issuei #1 has 36 full color pages are compurrised of the 22 page tale “Force Storm Part One of Five” plus the 9 ads, the 1 Dark Horse Comics mews page, and – and the 4 page purreview of the Conan story of the Queen of the Black Coast, nya! That looks like it might be the good nautical pirates adventure, nya!

The story by Jan Duursema and – and John Ostrander was scripted by Ostrander, penciled by Durrsema, inked by Dan Parsons, colored by Wes Dzioba, lettered by Michael Heisler, edited by Randy Stradley with Freddye Lins, nya! There are 2 different covers, one by Durrsema and – and one by Gonzalo Flores, nya!

The first 15 pages are the centuries of the historical narrative told by the Je’daii master of how the Tho Yor ships took races of different planets to the planet Tython, nya! They trained to become one with The Force and – and over the centuries built the temples, but those who could not use The Force left the planet, nya.

More of the centuries passed but the Je’daii were not always welcome on the other planets, nya! This lead to a war with Queen Hadiya  the purretty Twilek with the fabulous costume and – and the Orange stripes, but she was the despot warlord, nya! That brings us up to the “purresent” day of the tale 12 years later, nya!

The Rakata Empire conquers planets and- and hunts down the people who are sensitive to The Force, nya. The Empire has the inner treacherous rivalries, such as Xesh’s boss Tul’kar and – and Trill’s boss Skal’nas, nya! The hunters get into the fight but agree to have detect the planet that is strong in The Force, nya!

Nyow they have to grudgingly work together to search for the planet to plunder, nya! Those villains might try to bite off more than they can chew if it is the planet of the Jed’aii masters they have their appurrtites on, nya! A lot of the issue was the back story for the set up, but you get to see the rich history, nya!

There are the familiar races of the Wookiees, the Twileks, the Andosians, the Darthomirs on the Rancors, and – and it was all so beautifully drawn, so I will be back for more to see what happens next, nya! Nyow for another Dawn in the Dark Horse Comics, here is oneesan again to tell us what the Summers sisters are up to in —

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #6, nya!

Yvonne:

Arigato, nya! This was another issue of Buffy that has all of the ingredients, such as the poignant character moments between Dawn & Buffy who is purregnant, the flashback purrallel with the purrior slayer Nikki & her Watcher Crowley in 1971; Spike & Detective Dowling on the purrtrol for the vamps, and Buffy’s chat with her son Robin who was the Purrincipal at Sunnydale High School, nya!

Interspurrsed amongst the poignant moments & the mythology insights are the action scenes of the slayage, and some other bits near the end which I should not reveal, nya! So I think it is the mewsual wonderful writing with the great plot, dialogue & pace, complemented by the supurrb art, with the great portraiture & the expurressions, the poses, the scenery & the scene transitions, nya!

I must also purraise the sumptuous color and lighting, nya! Most of the tale is set at night time so you get the great illuminations of the cities, the diner &  the pool interiors, and Spike’s airship nya! Such is the story “On Your Own Part One”, which was purrduced by Joss Whedon, written by Andrew Chambliss, pencilled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Karl Story & colored by Michelle Madsen, nya!

We met Georges Jeanty & Karl Story at Heroes Con, nya! They are both so nice, nya! We got the widdle Willow head sketch on the sketch book from Jeanty, and Karl Story signe dour Catspaw card, nya! I wish DC would bring Catspaw back to the Legion comics, nya! Uh oh I have stray – catted off the Buffy topic so to resume the credits, #6 was lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt,

it was deigned by Justin Couch, edited by Scott Allie & Sierra Hahn with the assistance of Freddye Lins, and published by Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Comics, nya! There are 2 different covers, one of Buffy & Spike by Phil Noto, and the “Marvel Tomb of Dracula” comics homage version by Georges Jeanty, Dexter Vines & Michelle Madsen, nya! Speaking of the Marvel here is ‘Keami to tell us about-

Avengers Academy #25, nya!

Melanakeami:

Arigato! Avengers Academy #25 is off to the spectacular start, with the two page spread battle scene between Giant Man, Hawkeye, Mettle, Hazmat & Finesse against Reptil, White Tiger & X-23 who are mind controlled by Hybrid while Tigra, Lyrra, Lightspeed, Quicksilver, Striker & Butterball are incapacitated!

Hybrid is quite the disgusting evil creature! It is already such a fierce fight, and then the Sentinel joins the fight! I have never been so happy to see a Sentinel show up! Reptil transforms from the dinosaur form to his human form, with the change of heart about his secret time travel mission from the future!

He is the future Reptil trying to change history, and we glimpse the bit of his future in which he has a cute daughter named Maria! She has super powers too! There is the bit of emotional character drama between him & future Finesse, while back in the present he reverts to the dino form to chomp Hybrid!

Once again Dr. Pym demonstrates how ingenious he is, there a revelation into the Jocasta murder case, and other surprises & dramatic moments, but I should not spoil more of the thrilling plot! This comic book has wonderful art, great characters, the balance of humor drama & action, and the gorgeous color!

This story titled “Class Reunion” was written by Christos Gage, drawn by Tom Grummett, inked by Cory Hamscher, colored by Chris Sotomayor, lettered by Joe Caramagna, edited by Bill Rosemann with assistant Jake Thomas, and has the great cover art by Rodin Esquejo of Giant Man fighting the dinosaur!

Elsewhere in this issue are the interesting comments from the readers & author, the tribute page with Captain America & Bucky to the late comics artist / writer Joe Simon, and the 2 page spread of the preview for the upcoming meeting between Avengers Academy & The Runaways in issues #27 & 28!

It is easy to see why this is the Catgirl Critics’ current favorite Marvel comic! If there was any quibble it was unfortunate that Tigra is just barely seen in the background of about five panels! Speaking of the catgirls lurking about the panels, I believe there was a catgirl sighting in the comic book that Mike will discuss,

Star Trek / Legion of Supurr – Heroes #5!

Mike:

Yep! Ah, In this IDW / DC crossover, 6 Legionnaires & 6 Enterprise Officers strayed from their own universes to a parallel Earth’s capital of an evil galactic empire! This dimension is similar to Trek’s Mirror Universe, but it is an amalgam of both Star Trek & DC universes with the immortal Flint, also known as Vandal Savage and many other historical identities as the Emperor!

It was written of Chris Roberson, edited by Chris Ryall, pencilled by Jeffrey Moy, inked by Philip Moy, colored by Romulo Fajardo Jr and lettered by Chris Mowry! The 28 page issue is priced $3.99, including the uninterrupted 22 page story, which is followed by the preview art for the next issue’s cover, the IDW news page, and 4 pages of advertisements.

To nicely maximizing the space and value of the #3.99 issue, the inside front cover has the character roll-call and the issue’s credits; and the inside back cover has the gallery of the issue’s 3 variant covers! I chose cover A by Phil Jiminez & Romulo Fajardo Jr, which depicts Captain Kirk with phaser rifle surrounded by the lovely ladies of the Legion!

Cover B by Mike & Laura Allred is a neat scene of the heroes floating amongst the asteroids and cover C by Mario Alberti & Gabriel Rodriguez is one of the heroic team covers with Sulu & Chameleon Boy! Chameleon Boy’s humorous mockery and appetite somewhat reminds me of another DC shape changer, Beast Boy of the animated Teen Titans!

That is part of the great fun of this adventure. Like many great episodes of Star Trek, it is a very dangerous situation with the heroes captured, but not without the amusing moments, such as the sarcastic banter amongst the heroes while they are in the jail, Jim Kirk trying to flirt with Shadow Lass! There are Caitian catgirls too, amongst the Emperor’s waitresses!

I hope they are well fed too. Like a big Bond villain, the Emperor can’t resist telling his story & secrets to the worthy adversaries over dinner, which leads to the 2 page trophy room scene of famous time machines he’s captured! There were about a dozen I could identify from comics, movies & TV! There are other familiar sights, but I’ll not further spoil the plot!

The pace of this mini- series is a tad rushed, but gosh it’s fun, with so many trivial bits to please the Trek & Legion fans, humor that is genuinely funny and not silly buffoonery at a hero’s expense, nice portraiture, poses & fashion details of the characters, good detail in the all the mecha & scenic art, and splendid bright rich color befitting a Trek or Legion story! Now for the latest on what DC’s top cat girl Selina has been up to, here is Nya-sensei to tell us about–

Catwoman #6!

Nyanko:

Catwoman #6 includes the 20 page story titled “Welcome to the hard Way” written by Judd Winnick, drawn by Guillem March, colored by Tomeu Morey, lettered by Dezi Sienty, and edited by Rachel Gluckstern with Rickey Purdin. Marche’s front cover art depicts Catwoman (Selina Kyle) in the tussle with the Batman, which happens later in the tale, but first she is busy in Gotham Police custody!

She is cutely sassy with the crooked cops who want their money back, so the interrogation gets violent as they sic the hired supurr powered thug named Reach rough Selina up, but it becomes the bloody maimful catfight until the good cop Detective Alvarez intervenes! He frees the cat but then she has the tough bat fight with The Batman with the very emotional result! They are too much alike!

The combat is intensely brutal and each opponent has the different style & motivation. Reach has the bullying supurr power, whose mercenary loyalties can be purrchased; Batman has the finesse of the fighting skills & the technology; Catwoman has the quick agility of the cat and the savage claws & teeth fueled by the rage of her tragic life.

The art is highly detailed & colored from the sheen, crinkles & reflections of her tight leather costume and the luster of her red lips, the weave of Reach’s fishnets, the boot treads, the seams & folds of the bat suit, her friend Gwen’s hair, and all of the intricate architectural & furniture details! I hope things purrk up for Selina soon! Nyow for the next comics catgirl critique, we will migrate from Gotham to Tokyo for–

Omamori Himari vol. 6

(warning: plot spoilers & mention of boobies)!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Hai this has been a delightful manga to read, about the fella named Yuuto who does not realize he is of the demon slayer lineage until his latent powers manifest, like a beacon drawing the vengeful demons his way! Fortunately the powers also come with the flirtatious voluptuous catgirl bodyguard Himari who is the mistress of the sword, however that does not please his childhood girl friend Rinku!

Making his life more complicated are the further female spirits such as Shizuku, Lizlet and others who are the romantic rivals for his affections, thus resulting in the ribald harem type of modern sword & sorcery fantasy manga, Omamori Himari by Milan Matra! The North American verison is published by Yen, and this volume was translated by Christine Dashiell & lettered by Hope Donovan!

Recently another adversary, Kuesu the slayer witch of a rival family set aside her duels when more powerful opponents arrived, Tama the fox & Shuten- douji! Although Kuesu is an ally now, she is still the rival of the other girls with the lustful thoughts for Yuuto! That is part of the reason the manga is rated mature along with the language, nudity, sexuality & violence that is not for the widdlie kitties!

In addition to the boobies & combat, the manga also has the cute & zany comedic elements and the poignant dramatic aspects. The characters, their elegant & sexy fashions, the landscapes, architectural details, and the action FX are excellently drawn in the B&W line & tone art of the 160 pages; with the color covers, plus 2 bonus color pages for the Aperitif! Now I will serve the taste of the plot!

This volume includes Chapters 29 – 35. Kueseu decides she needs to spend more time around Yuuto, so that she can both seduce and protect him! Himari has started him on the training program to better defend himself & hone his powers, and advises Rinko to start the training too lest she become the weak link target whenever Tama & Shuten- douji return to strike back at their full strength!

It seems like it would be unannounced! Lizlet the tea spirit tends to her cafe & tempting ample buxom wiles, while the water elemental Shizuku departs for a while. Despite her interest in Yuuto, she still craves the vengeance for her deceased family who were slain by the slayers, and Kuesu has offered to to lure another latent slayer named Mikari into her clutches- but what is Kuesu’s motive?

Poor Mikari has no clue what is going on! This leads to the complex five – way fight, but will Yuuto’s good nature that regards her as the part of his extended family overcome Shizuku’s vendetta? The cast continues to grow as we are introduced Hitsugi and miku priestess sisters Kasuri & Hisuzu of the slayer council, and their official inquest is quite displeased with how Kuesu treated Mikari!

Kuesu goes back to the cafe for the tea, which might not help but it can’t hurt before she and Lizlet decide to drop in on Yuuto, who has come down with the cold. Himari and Shizuku decided to keep him warm in the bed, but when Rinko gets home from school she will probably not be amused by the arrangement! Elsewhere, Tama & Shuten-douji are having a few Ogres over for dinner, heehee!

It must be the acquired eclectic taste, but don’t think i would want to prepare the dish of the Ogre at Sheila May’s! That appetizing interlude bridges us to chapter 35 – and Christmas time! Rinko’s classmate the Class President joins the gang as they don their lovely apparel for the special party with the catered feast & games! Hmm I wonder if the Class President will be joining the harem too, heehee!

I also wonder about the perceived villains. We see one panel of Tama & Shuten-douji by themselves dressed up for the holiday too, but I can’t help but wonder if they are sad & lonely, or if they are really the villains, especially given the aggressions & changes of loyalties amongst both of the sides, while Yuuto tries to break the vicious cycle between the demons & the slayers.

That sums up the 7 courses served in volume 6, but for the Digestif are the bit of cultural notes, the author’s afterward & the bonus pic of Himari sprawled in the kimono! Some of my favorite scenes were the nimble training session, Himari’s sly rules taunts to Kuesu, Yuuto’s pure heartful hug for Shizuku, the Christmas party, and all of the beautiful bikinis, yukatas, kimonos, and the party dresses!

It is not all just the action, friskiness, fashions & boobies! Among the more somber moments are Himari’s fatalistic mewsings of the cat’s burden, and the sadder incidents were Mikari’s situation, and the flashback of the frightened young Shizuku witnessing her family’s demise was especially emotional!

Melanakeami:

I liked the triangular necklace that Shizuku wore to the party!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Rinko, Kusue & Lizlet have the ribbons!

Petra:

Rinko wore the off – shoulder ruffled dress and & Himari wore the detached sleeves dress to the party, nya!

Tara-chan:

What did Class Purresident wear to the party, nya?

Petra:

The cute criss – cross cocktail dress!

Nyssy:

Kawaii!

Nyanko:

Himari also wore the ring closure bikini!

Kianalani:

Tama the fair nine tail fox has the very purretty Pink & White Onna- Bakama outfit with the Red obi!

Jeannie:

It is indeed the stylish manga.

Ne’ellakaliomi:

The next stop of the journey takes us from Japan to the Arabian Sea for ‘Lani’s review of

Sinbad The Legacy!

Kianalani:

This is another treasure that Mike brought us from the convention! It is a comic book written by Dan Johnson and published in India by Campfire Comics who make the top quality comics of the original fiction, biographical, mythological & adaptations of classic literature! This is an original tale of Sinbad the heroic mariner from ancient Barash with adventure upon the mysterious islands & high seas!

It was illustrated Naresh Kumar, colored by Anjo Kurian, lettered by Laxmi Chand Gupta, edited by Sukanya Mehta, with the production by Vishal Sharma and the cover art by Naresh Kumar, Pradeep Sherawat & Jaya Krishnan KP!  The full color issue has the 84 page story plus the 2 credits pages, 3 pages about nautical celestial navigation and the 3 pages of ads for other Campfire titles.

I want to get their Jungle book adaptation too! In this story he is hired by King Haakim of Hasis for a mercantile journey, but he also wants his selfish, snooty rude son Prince Habib to tag along so that he might learn the mature manners. The young prince cops the bad attitude, which almost gets him beaten up by the crew! Unfortunately the weather is stormy too and the ship is blown off the course!

Along the way, Sinbad tells Habib of his first voyages, when he was the brash unseasoned sailor, so there are the flashback scenes of Sinbad’s younger days to parallel the current adventure. They wind up exploring the islands to find food, water, gems & alluring island girls, but it is the violent visit because they also run into the giant killer snakes, the giant Roc birds, and the seductive cannibals!

They eventually escape to the Kingdom of Kandopolis where King Ando greets them, and introduces his princess daughter to Habib, but there is a sinister sorcerous plot, underground tunnels with the giant rats, and the sexy assassin Catia who Sinbad has encountered before! Will Habib survive to return home as the better mannered gent? Y’all will have to read the comic book to find out!

It is the rousing adventure full of the sword & sorcery for the dashing, wise, brave heroic sea captain! It unfolds at the brisk pace but it is not too brisk with the melee & chomping violence and the macabre incidents, and the exquisite artistry is loaded with the fabulous costumes, the lush scenery & palatial architecture where the horrors dwell, and the coloring of the book is quite sumptuous!

Melanakeami:

Sinbad adventures are fun, I rather liked The 7th Voyage of inbad with the great FX by Ray Harryhausen!

Nyanko:

Hai and I purrticularly liked The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, which starred Caroline Munro!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

And Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger starred Jane Seymour!

Mike:

Oh that’ right- they were both Bond girls and Sinbad girls!

Nyssy:

Bond girls?

Mike:

Yep! Jane Seymour was in Live and Let Die and Caroline Munro was in The Spy Who Loved Me!

Nyssy:

That is right.

Kianalani:

Who was the beautiful witch in the Sinbad TV series?

Tara-chan:

There was a Sinbad TV series, nya?

Yvonne:

Hai it was in the late 90’s, nya!

Jeannie:

That was Maeve, who was purrtrayed by Jacqueline Collen-Tarrolly.

Petra:

She is not only the purrforming artist of the fantasy series, but she is also the visual artist who creates the beautiful fantasy art, nya! Her web site is Toadstool Farm and she paints the mermaids too, nya!

Melanakeami:

Sugoi!

Nyanko:

Ah that is the good mews, but I think we have stray catted off the topic again!

Tara-chan:

Nya!

Yvonne:

Well then we should purroceed with the next review, because there is more of the ancient sword & sorcery & the kitty cats as we travel from the ancient Arabia Sea to ancient Luxor in Nyssy’s review of

Red Sonja #63, nya!

Nyssy:

Hai! Sonja is one of our favoritest heroines although for the past several issues she been out in the desert sand adventure. I don’t mind the sand bar or the beachy shore for the brief periods but I would not last long in the desert! Previously she was helping to guard the merchant caravan, but when they reached the Egyptian-like city of Luxor she was arrested & encountered the sorceress Azbenath!

Published by Dynamite Entertainment, Red Sonja #63 is priced $3.99 US and has 32 full color pages, which include the 9 pages of the ads, the IDW announcements page, and the 22 page story “The Dark Heart (Echoes of War, Part 3)”, which was written by Eric Trautmann, pencilled by Walter Geovani, edited by Joseph Rybandt, colored by Adriano Lucas, and lettered by Simon Rowland!

There are 2 different covers; Cover A by Walter Geovani depicts Sonja her weary after the combat atop the mound of the skulls, and cover B by Wagner Reis depicts her amidst of the melee with the gleaming armor of the enemy! Both depict her in her famous scale mail bikini, although in the story at fist she she continues to wear the outfit of the cropped mail shirt, leather skirt & shin greaves!

Azbenath has a temple to the Goddess Bast which is full of kitty cats! She is the sexy witch in the skimpy purretty green gown with the long Black hair, dangling jewels & exotic ink, and she wants to make a deal with Sonja to obtain a magickal relic, but Sonja is fed up with her tricks! Unfortunately out in the dark city streets, the witchy cat minions become the giant werecats that stalk Sonja’s comrades!

Sonja is not pleased but takes the bargain to save her friends’ lives, so they leave the city on the quest for the relic horn, which leads them to the immense dark walled city of Kheshatta which has the very sinister dangerous reputation! Among my favorite images of the issue are the opening panel of Sonja against the map, the 2 page spreads of the cityscapes, the full page pic of the giant werecats!

I guess that explains why the city guards fear the cats! I liked the scene of Azbenath slying toying with Sonja only to get smacked, and Sonja riding on the camel, having changed into the metal scale mail bikini with the hooded cloak! I would think that the metal scale mail bikini would get quite hot though, and I think she is tanning under the sun, so I hope she does not mind getting the tan lines!

So this story arc has all the trimmings, of the ancient cities full of mystery & dangers, the scheming sorceress, the magickal monsters, and Sonja riding to the quest! The eerie confrontation of the mysterious cliffhanger, has me curious as to what will happen next! We will linger in the Middle East for the next review, but return to the modern times in

Michael Turner’s Fathom Vol. 4 #4!

Nyssy:

We are also big fans of the art & stories of late Michael Turner, and purrticularly the scientist / supurr heroine Dr. Aspen Matthews he created for his Fathom series published by Aspen Comics! This issue has 28 pages compurrised of the 20 page story “Grasping For Air Not There” plus the 8 pages of ads! It was written by Scott Lobdell, pencilled by Alex Konat & Cory Smith!

It was colored Beth Sotelo, lettered by Josh Reed, edited by Vince Hernandez & Frank Mastromauro, with design & purrduction by Mark Roslan & Peter Steigerwald. It is available in the choice of 3 covers: cover A by Konat & Steigerwald, cover B by Tony Parker & Sotelo; and the rarer ‘retailer incentive’ version C by Konat! Now I will dive into the plot, but this requires the recap of prior issues!

Thus far in issues # 1-3 of volume 4, after a rescuing hostages from pirates and lecturing at the university in Miami, Aspen visited the magnificent Pan-National Sovereign Scientific Research Center off the Florida coast, only to discover the secret plot by group of deep sea parasites who are impersonating humans in high places, intent on assassinating the human leaders of the surface world!

She raced at supurr speed to the United Nations building, saved the lives and discovered more alarming tidbits, but those villains escaped into the ocean! Sometime later, Aspen Judith & Dr. Woreth from the Research Center went to to Saudi Arabia at a Sheik’s behest, where they boarded the small futuristic submarine to explore the recently discovered subterranean sea!

The Sheik believes it to promise a vast new source of petroleum. Among the amazing marine life there was a beautiful but hostile aquatic humanoid who was once Dr. Padma Singh before her surgical alteration. Sadly her mind is not right and she is strikes at Aspen, but then both of them were attacked by dozens of armored undersea commandos who overpowered Aspen by surprise!

The nonlinear story was continued in issue #0 which was published prior to issue #1, in which Aspen awoke restrained in a castle one week later. She easily defeated the guards and escaped into the eerie sea, where the story continues in #4! As the action resumes, Aspen defeats more commandos, studies the bizarre undersea structures, and tumbles inside to encounter Dr. Nakamura!

He is the vengeful enemy believed to have perished, but has been secretly conducting the deep expurriments, and neither are happy to see each other amidst his expository monologuing & cliffhanger ending. The plot does not advance much further due to the flashbacks, but there are stunning images of the technology, the bio-mechanical structures, and Aspen crushing her enemies!

There are several impurressive full page pics, and the rich use of the color & light. Also in the issue are the lovely full page portrait of Aspen to advertise the next issue, and the two – page spurread to purmote issue #0 of the forthcoming spin-off series of Kiani Volume 2, which I am eager to see! It is time for another break but then our reviews of the purrinted media will continue with our–

Book Reviews!

(snip) (one short break later…)

Freedom From Tyranny: Pirates of Tezomea vol. 1

Melanakeami:

I was not able to swim to WhatTheHell?! Con because it was too far inland but Mike brought us some special gifts from the artists, venders & auction such as this wonderful book! This book was written by Neesa & Doug Chapman whose artistry we mentioned earlier! It is an 80 page trade paperback prose adventure of the steam punk / fantasy genre!

It is about a young actress named Calliope Winters or just Callie for short, who is the understudy for the play’s leading lady Veronica, until she is mistaken for Veronica and kidnapped by airship pirates! The pirates are the crew of the airship Heaven’s Blessing and they consider themselves the freedom fighters against the tyranny of the king, who Veronica has been seeing!

Since Callie is not Veronica, the ransom is not paid, so she joins the crew which includes Captain Ashtail, Hamster, Collin, Yureg, Boiler the engineer grrl & Yara the big powerful catlike first mate grrl from the savage Pard tribe! Callie, Yara & the captain are on the book’s cover art by Doug! Yara has the impurressive muscles, tattoos, sharp teeth & claws and doesn’t wear much!

Boiler is the petite smart scientific inventive grrl who used be on the merchant ship but a tragic incident of the blockade claimed her husband’s life so she joined the pirates to strike the bow against the oppressors. Callie starts out in the elegant Emerald hoot skirt gown & the corset but soon she trades that for the shorter leather pirate grrl outfit with the dagger and the pistol!

She is very smart, brave, quick thinking & talented. She becomes acquainted with the crew who are pursued by the royal airships, which leads out to the desert wilderness and the encounters with the King’s soldiers, the spy, the bounty hunter, giant centipede monsters, and the rival pirates! It is a fun light hearted adventure with the brisk pace and plenty of swashbuckling!

I will recommend to fans of the air pirates, the steam punk, and the strong heroic female characters! You can purchase the printed book or read the story at the web site, including several chapters of Pirates of Tezomea Volume 2: Machines, Magic, and Mayhem! The next stop on the tour goes from the Victorian age back to the modern mean streets of Gotham for Nya-sensei’s analysis of

The Batman Files!

Nyanko:

Gosh this is one of the most impurressive books about The Batman I have ever seen! It is not the inexpensive book, but it is of the huge 10.25″ x 13 25″ x 1.25″ hard bound size in the silvery magnetic closure Black leatherette cover! It is of over 300 pages which were written by comics historian Matthew K. Manning and published by Andrews McMeel in 2011!

This huge massive handsome book is the collection of writings, files, pics & documents of Bruce Wayne as a record of The Batman!  It has so many illustrations, maps, bluepurrints, diagrams, including the full page & two page spurreads, first hand purrsonal accounts & observations, and such a vast wealth of facts ‘n figures ‘n insights covering his entire career!

There are so many images of the many heroes & villains, Gotham city, and all of his equipment & vehicles! It even reveals a typical work out regime & daily menu, and for each character there are the recommended stories of the comic books. This might be the ultimate book about The Batman & his world and I will give it the highest purraise of the “A+” grade!

There are numerous full page pics, plenty of gorgeous poster illustrations by the legendary Tom Chantrell, and there is the bit of nudity in some of the photos & art, purrticularly as they purrogressed into the more purrovocative films of the later 1960’s and the early 1970’s, nya!

There are beautiful images of the actresses such as Ursula Andress, Raquel Welch, Caroline Munro, Martine Beswick, Ingrid Pitt, Yutte Stensgaard, and future catgirl Nastassia Kinski, nya! I purrticularly liked the photo of Valerie Leon in the Egyptian costume with the Black cat from Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb, nya!

There is an amewsing photo of Christopher Lee as Dracula, grinning with the movie purrducer, and the Mummy’s Shroud mummy with the tasty glass of the milk, nya! It is quite an informative, entertaining, handsome book which I will highly recommend to fans of those great movies and artists, nya! Ok I am done but the next book purrtaining to a movie will be reviewed appurropurriatly by Vonny, as it involves the hunt for the shark in-

JAWS: Memories From Martha’s Vineyard, nya!

Yvonne:

I think JAWS is one of the best movies ever made because of the combination of the great story by Peter Benchley, the beautiful location & cinematography , the balance of the humor & drama, the thrilling shark & boat scenes, the excellent pace, the iconic music by John Williams, and the supreme direction by Steven Speilberg, but then course I might be a bit biased given my angler purrofession, nya!

However, it is not just the thrill of the shark fight & the scares that make the movie so great, but the fascinating characters portrayed by the great actors, and the captivating character moments between The Brodys, the Mayor, Hooper, Quint, and the other islanders! Why I still get the chills down my tail when I watch them investigate the boat at night, or when Quint tells the tale of the USS Indianapolis, nya!

It had such a huge impact, not just as the huge blockbuster movie or the inspiration for many subsequent documentaries & movies about man – eating marine life, but it had the profound influence on the ocean ecology & safety and the scientific study of the sharks. There was a lot of merchandise including the two papurrback books purrtaining to the movie, The Making of Jaws and The Jaws Log, nya!

Nyow those were the nifty books – which our wonderful Catgirl island Public Library has in their circulations – but this mew great big thick wide trade papurrback book Jaws: Memories From Martha’s Vineyard written by Matt Taylor seems like the ultimate book about Jaws, nya! At appurroximately 10.5″ x 12″ x 1″ & 296 pages, it is about 8 times larger than both of those older books combined, nya!

If you are not familiar with Martha’s Vineyard, that is the delightful island off of the Massachusetts coast where they filmed most of the movie starting back in 1974, nya! One of the special qualities of this great big book is that not only do a bunch of the filmmakers and the actors contribute to it, but you also get the purrticipation of islanders who were there, with their first – hand tales of the shark, nya!

Published by Moonrise Media, the $49.95 US purrice book has hundreds of photographs many of which have never been seen before, plus all sorts of documents, script pages, repurrints of the mewspapurr articles, diagrams and the illustrations, including some that were newly created, nya! The photos were compiled by Jim Beller and the author, and many are the full page pics, nya!

Beller, Taylor & Speilberg get things started with the purreface, introduction & forward, the long list of the key contributers, the island map, and the purrologue, nya! Following that are the extensive 6 chapters to chronicle the making of Jaws from the scouting of the locations, to the premier of the movie in the theaters, nya! Gosh I forgot how young Steven Speilberg was when he directed Jaws, nya!

The book wonderfully sets the tone of what it was like there in the mid 1970’s, with an almost travelogue detail of the buildings, beaches, boats & bites, nya! You even get to see how purrduction designer Joe Alves envisioned certain incidents of the story that we did not actually see in the movie, nya! There are great pics of the tasty tiger shark they caught, and the 25′ Great White they built, nya!

There are even the details of Quint’s fishing rig, barrels & the harpoon gun, nya! Although most of the movie was filmed at the island, some of the underwater scenes were filmed at the movie studio in the water tank, so you get to see that purrocess too, which is followed by the coda of the reminiscing about the movie’s purremier at the island’s theater on the night of Friday June 20th, 1975, nya!

We were thrilled with the expurrdition of Quint’s boat The Orca in search for that Great White shark in 1975, but 2 years later in 1977, we were thrilled by another ship that was being hunted by the great white Stardestroyers. so nyow here is Jenjen to tell us all about the-

Haynes Star Wars Millennium Falcon Owner’s Manual, nya!

Jeannie:

Arigato. I am quite the mecha enthusiast and in my opinion this $28.00 hardcover book by Chris Reiff, Chris Trevas & Ryder Windham discloses about all we we would need to know about Han Solo’s – and formerly Lando Calrissian’s – famous refitted YT-1300 Corellian Freighter, The Millennium Falcon.

The Millennium Falcon is one of my favorite stars of the Star Wars films, purrticularly in Epurrsode IV: A Mew Hope and Epurrsode V: The Empire Strikes Back. The technical text, purrofuse photos & illustrations of the book examine the not just the history of the Falcon but also the other YT class ships.

It is quite thorough & beautifully rendered with color images, photos, plan, elevation & cutaway views. It has purrofiles of han Solo, Chewbacca & Lando Calrissian, details of the helm, navigation, computer, purropulsion, sensors, armor, landing & docking gear, the elevator platforms & escape pods.

It is purrcise and thorough down to the close –  ups and schematics of the various consoles, the holographic chess board, oxygen masks, space suits, special maneuvers, the guns and missiles, including the targeting display for the deadly surpurrise the Falcon has for those pesky Imperial Snow Troopurrs.

I much purrfur this Millennium Falcon Owner’s manual to the Haynes Star Trek USS Enterprise Owner’s Manual, because the Enterpurrise book was rather lacking in that it just barely touched upon a few parts of the various ships named Enterpurrise and I wish they had devoted a whole book purr Enterpurrise.

Bringing this fine book home is the size compurrison chart, compurring the Falcon to the various Rebel & Imperial fighters, shuttle, cruisers, frigate & Stardestroyer. Between this book and the layer – by – layer Millennium Falcon 3-D Owner’s Guide board book, these are delightful days for fans of the Falcon.

Two years after the Falcon first soared across the screen and into our hearts, in 1979 another famous space ship was just as amazing but not nearly as lucky, when the M Class starcruiser Nostromo investigated an alien signal from the inhospitable planetoid LV426, so here is Nyssy to tell us about–

The ALIEN Vault

Nyssy:

Our library also has the neat books about the Ridley Scott’s movie Alien, such as The Book of Alien by Paul Scanlon & Michael Gross, the Alien Movie Novel edited by Richard J Anobile, Alien: The Illustrated Story graphic novel by Walt Simonson & Archie Goodwin and HR Giger’s Alien book, and now there is the new addition of The Alien Vault by Ian Nathan!

The Alien Vault is the full color 176 page hardcover book in the slipcase published by Voyageur Books, with the USA purrice of $35.00, and has the neat items tucked inside, so it is similar to those other scrapbook – like box sets of books & mementos such as the UNC Tarheels, NASA, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Star Trek, Star Wars, Transformers, Marvel, and Pixar sets!

The slipcase has the alien egg image, and the book’s boards feature Ripley in the space suit on one board and the alien on the other board! It has such excellent visual style, fonts & colors to support the abundant text information and the many images! There are many photos, conceptual art, graphic designs, diagrams & notes, a lot of which I have never seen before!

It examines the characters, props, sets & FX, covering the design & filming of the space ship Nostromo, Ripley & the rest of the crew, the shuttle, the planet, the alien ship, the eggs, the face hugger, the chest burster & the full grown xenomorph. It briefly touches upon the deleted scenes, the director’s cut, logo designs & publicity media, the merchandise & sequels.

It was neat to see the various poster ideas for the movie! A bit is revealed about the actors & characters, but none of them are covered in depth as much as Sygourney Weaver / Ripley who gets her own chapter! There are intermews with the cat & crew, which seem to be compiled form across the years by Nathan who was the executive editor for Empire magazine!

Enclosed in the book’s pockets are the few tidbits such as the two widdle posters, two widdle Giger art purrints, the Nostromo emblem sticker, a sheet of the ship Blueprints, small script pages, and storyboards! They are neat but I kind of wish there were more of those such items, such as perhaps more of the ship insignia, emblems, art purrints & movie posters! Now I will turn The Mew over to N’ell who has another book of full of the wonderful aliens, space ships & planet designs,

The Art of the Mass Effect Universe!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Mass Effect is the very popular “space opera” type of science fiction genre video game series about the galactic adventures in the future of Commander Shepard and the crew of the starship Normandy as they rescue people, encounter the various planetary beings, investigate the strange plots and fight against the villains & monsters!

Since the long awaited 3rd game in the series is due out this month, which involves the invasion of the Earth by the horrible creatures, this special art book was just recently published to showcase all of the beautiful & amazing conceptual art & designs of the characters, creatures, costumes mecha & the exotic locations of the story!

The $39.99 US / $43 Canada priced full color hardcover book from Dark Horse Books is taller, wider & thickerer than the original Art of Mass Effect book which was published in 2007, which was a gorgeous book too but it just pertained to the first Mass Effect game and this this bigger book pertains to Mass Effect games 1-3!

Dark Horse also published those Mass Effect comic books which we recently reviewed! To compare the books, the first Mass Effect art book was 176 pages & measured about 8.25″ x 10.75″, whereas this new book has the 184 pages & measures about 9.25″ x 12.25″, and finally features images of the female version of Shepard!

That is already a plus for this book! You see, in the game the player can play Shepard as either the male or the female type, but the male type has usually gotten more attention. You know, our friend & web master Jamie is the web master of a dandy fan site devoted to the female Shepard called Femshep http://femshep.ning.com/!

The book starts with the full page pics of the Shepards followed by the introductions by the executive purrducer Casey Hudson & art director Derek Watts, and has the captions by writer Chris Hepler throughout the book! The book is organized into the 3 chapters, one per game, from widdle sketches to the larger renderings!

Most of those were not in the first book! It is lavish with the character designs such as Shepard, Benezia, Saren, Tali, Miranda, Jacob, Garrus, Grunt, Thane, Mordin, Legion, Jack, Samara, Kasumi, Zaeed, Ashley, Kaidan,Vega, Liara, Jack, Edi, Prothean, Kai, The Illusive Man, The Shadow Broker, The Scion, and The Praetorian!

There are the concepts for the races & groups  such as the Collectors, the Cerebus soldiers, other humans, Asari, Turians, Krogans, Salarians, Quarians, Elcor, Volus, Geth, Thorian, Rachni, the Reaper invaders; vehicles such as The Normandy, The Mako, and many many other vehicles, weapons, equipment and graphics!

It is the bumper crop of the lavish scenes of the many locations such as the Earth, Mars, Citadel, Therum, Virmire, Noveria, Eden Prime, Ilos, Sur’kesh, Rannoch, Thessia, Space Station Omega, Illium, Tuchanka, Horizon, Pragia, Purgatory, Korllus, Lazarus Station, 2175 AEIA, Cerebus Headquarters, the Mass Relays, and so forth!

Throughout the book are half page pics, several full page pics, a few two-page spreads, and hundreds of smaller images! It is such a big gorgeous book and I think it would be the great part of the Mass Effect fan’s collection or the library of the conceptual art & design! Now I will turn The Mew over to Tara-chan who will tell us about–

The Hugo Movie Companion!

Tara- chan:

Arigato, nya! This is such a neat book by author Brian Selznick about how his book The Inventions of Hugo Cabret became the screenplay by John Logan for the Hugo movie directed by Martin Scorsese, nya that won several Oscar awards, nya! ! It is the lovely , purrofusely illustrated hardcover book published by Scholastic Purress, has the fascinating thoroughly expurrt first hand accounts, nya!

This 236 page book has the USA purrice of $19.99, the Canada purrice of $21.99, the UK purrice of £12.99, and – and the cover has the shiny Golden font with the photo of Asa Butterfiled who purrtrays Hugo who is the purrotagonist boy of the tale set in Paris in 1931, nya! This book tells how the author got the ideas, how the book compurrs to the movie, and how the movie was made, nya!

It is full of so many book illustrations, movie concept art, the story boards, scenes from the movie, photos of the historical people, the places, the movie cast and – and the crew, including a lot of full page pics and – and the two- page spurread pics, nya! There are sections purrtaining to such Paris, Georges Melies, and – and the automatons which is purrobably Jenjen’s favorite part of the book, nya!

There are comments by the author, the screenwriter, the director, the purrducer, the casting director, the 1st assistant director, set decorator, the purrops master, the purrduction designer, the costume designer, the hair designer, the make-up designer, the FX supurrvisors, the magic supurrvisor, the stunts supurrvisor, the animal supurrvisor, the mewsic composer, and – and others of the crew, nya!

There are also the comments by the great actors such as Sir Ben Kingsley, Sir Christopher Lee, Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Helen McCrory, Frances De la Tour, Richard Griffiths, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jude law, Ray Winstone, and numerous others, nya! Helen McrCory, Frances De la Tour, Richard Griffifths, and – and magic supurrvisor Paul Kiev were in the Harry Potter movies too, nya!

Ironically, amongst the cast there are the few actors who have purreviously purrtrayed the vampires, such as Chloe Moretz, Helen McCrory and – and Christopher Lee, nya! There are quite the few  of The Lord of the Rings, James Bond, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Star Trek, Sweeny Todd, Baron Munchausen, and Martin Scorsese alumni amongst the movie’s cast and – and the crew too, nya!

There are the images compurring how the characters look in the book to how they look in the movie, and – and to top it off are the biographies of the cast and – and the crew, the author’s suggestions for places to visit in Paris, in New York, good web sites, and – and the author’s movie recommendations, nya! OK I am done  with my book report, but nyow here is Lani t with her book report on–

The Art of The Secret World of Arrietty, nya!

Kianalani:

Arigato, tara-chan! The Secret World of Arrietty is one of the movies we have been most eagerly anticipating this year! It is the japanese anime movie directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi & produced by Studio Ghibli and based upon the upon the award winning series of the children’s story of The Borrowers by Mary Norton!

It is about the tiny faerie like folk who live in the houses of the regular sized humans and tend to borrow items to use for their appliances, tools & furniture. The doll house would be like a regular-sized house for them. They try to go unnoticed but the teenage daughter named Arrietty befriends one of them!

Studio Ghibli is our favoritest animation studio, which gave us Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Nausicaa, Porco Rosso, Pom Poko, Castle in the Sky, Whisper of the Heart, The Cat Returns, Pom Poko, and Tales From Earthsea!

If you have seen any of the purrior art books of the Studio Ghibli Library series then you will know what lavish gorgeous quality to expect from this beautiful superb book! This is the English translated trade paperback edition, published by Viz with the price of $34.99 USA, $39.99 Canada, or £25.00 UK price!

It measures 8 1/4″ x 10 3/4″ and has the 248 pages with the dust jacket with the cover art of Arrietty amongst the ivy leaves! It is chock full of the magnificent sketches, character designs, concept art, background scenery art, the poster art, and stills from the movie, including some two – page spreads!

There are so many beautiful full color images of the forest, the meadow, the garden, the mansion, and Arrietty’s family’s secret home! It has the character sketches by Hayao Miyazaki & Hiromasa Yonebayashi, concept art supervised by the art directors Yoji Takeshige & Noboru Yoshida, and the character designs by Akihiko Yamashita & Ai Kagawa!

The book also has the interviews with the director & the art directors! The first 208 pages are all the art, but following that are the 34 pages of the complete translation of the voice-over script! The English language screenplay by Karey Kirkpatrick is based upon the screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki & Keiko Niwa!

After that are the the credits & lyrics to three songs! It is one of the most beautiful books I have seen in a while, and I give it an “A” as in Arrietty! highly recommend it to any fan of the beautiful art or anime! I believe that N’ell will have a bit to say about the movie itself later in The Mew!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Hai!

Jeannie:

Emily got an Arrietty poster.

Mike:

For those who came in late, Jeannie is referring to our friend Emily!

Nyssy:

As in Catgirl Island’s Emily Grace Coin Soccer Stadium!

Nyanko:

Whose records in the island’s rec league soccer are unsurpassed!

the catgirls:

BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! NYA!

Tara-chan:

Onee-san has the same jersey number 9, nya!

Yvonne:

It was the luck, but we all have the lucky numbers, nya!

Melanakeami:

What is the poster like?

Jeannie:

27″ x 40″ two – sided theatrical one sheet, rolled.

Petra:

That is the lovely poster art of Arrietty borrowing the sugar, nya!

Kianalani:

Oh it is the break time again! That will conclude the book reports, but we will be right back as

Our Monthly Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight

Shines On Ten Animated Nekomimis!

(snip) (one short break later…)

Jeannie:

In this portion of the show, we  honor the famous catgirl characters of various media from around the world. That includes the nekomimi & anthropurrmorphic feline femmes of comics, books, games, movies, TV and so forth! We are broadly inclusive, and consider the those who are either purrmanently or tempurrarily part neko, those who just famously dress the part with the ears and tail, and those who have the purropurr cattitude.

Since we have 10 nekomimis of Japanese anime to shine the spotlight upon today, the individual commemorations will be a bit expurrdited, but nonetheless appurreciative.  I would like to start with Fam of  Ruin Explorers, an amewsing sword & sorcery genre miniseries of 4 epurrsodes released in 1995. Fam and her partner Ihrie are the sorcereress. Ihrie is the taller of the two, in the Red & White costume, the Blue eyes & longer darker hair.

Fam is the more petite with the tan skin, Green eyes, the long supple ears and the cat’s tail to match her short Blond hair. She wears the White short sleeve outfit with the high waisted loincloth, the short boots with the White & Blue spats to match her capelet & wristbands, and she carries the ornate crook staff. She is of the purrky peppy dispurrsition as the two friends search the ancient ruins for the fabled powerful magickal relics.

Nyssy:

For the next catgirl to commemorate, I will shift from the fantasy catgirl of the ancient past to the science fiction catgirl of the future to discuss Aisha Clanclan of the TV series Outlaw Star! It started as the manga in 1996 and was adapted into the fun 26 episode TV series in 1998! It is a sort of Western themed space opera genre anime about Gene Starwind and his crew of the Outlaw Star who take on the odd jobs in the interstellar frontier!

They have the rivals & the enemies, including Aisha Clanclan of the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire who purrsues them on the quest! She is the sexy, tough, strong catgirl with the tan skin, braided White hair, Green eyes, the long ears, and the tufted tail that swishes from her Green mini dress, topped by the strapless White bustier and the Gold cat bell collar. She has the super strength, stamina, keen senses, claws and the primal feline qualities!

She has the big appetite especially after the exertion and can be a bit greedy but eventually joins the crew! For more about Aisha & Outlaw Star, I recommend her articles at the Outlaw Star Wiki http://outlawstar.wikia.com/wiki/Aisha_Clanclan, Wikipedia  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlaw_Star, and the Anime News Network http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=423! Who will Tara-chan will tell us about?

Tara-chan:

I would like to say a few words of purraise for Haru of the wonderful manga and- and the movie The Cat Returns, made by my favoritest animation studio, Ghibli, nya! nya! Haru is the school girl going about her normal life until she rescues the cat from the street traffic, and- and she discovers that she can talk to the cats who later purrade by with offer her the grateful gifts and the royal visit to the Cat Kingdom, nya! However there is the misunderstanding and- and the wedding purroposal, nya!

Haru has the Brown hair, the Brown eyes, and- and her Blue school uniform, nya. In the Cat Kingdom, she gets the purretty gown and – and transforms into the catgirl with the ears, the pink nose, the whiskers, the paws and – and the tail, but if she does not escape she will become the full cat, nya! The King wants to keep her, but she is aided by the heroic Baron kitty, nya! The Baron also appurred in the purrior Ghibli movie Whispurrs of the Heart which is also the wonderful Ghibli movie, nya!

The manga was by Aoi Hiragi, Hayao Miyazaki worked on the anime concept, and – and it was directed by Hiroyuki Morita, nya! Haru was voiced by Chizuru Ikewaki in the original Japanese version, and- and by Anne Hathaway in the English dub, nya! I also recommend the 2 disk DVD The Art of The Cat Returns art book, and – and for more information, I recommend The Cat Returns pages at the great Studio Ghibli fan site The Hayao Miyazaki Web, http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/neko/, nya!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

I have also chosen a sword & sorcery catgirl, but she is of the modern day: Mikoto Minagi, of My Hime, My Otomoe, and My Otome Zwei! It starts in the 2004 My Hime TV series, in which the girls at the huge school discover they are the Hime, the chosen ones of a secret inner circle student council group to fight the demons called the Orphans and eventually each other!

Over the various incarnations of the series the girls & villains become more powerful! It is a wonderful saga with the balance of comedy, drama, relationships & battles, great designs, scenery & supernatural combat! Mikoto does not have the cat’s ears or the tail but she is very catlike, quick, strong, agile, hungry, and likes the catnaps!

She has the cute short black hair with the braids, the Golden eyes, the glowing pendant, and typically wears the sailor style school uniform. She carries the sword which is taller than her in the Black scabbard on her back. She has super strength, and in episode 7 she carried the giant Grouper out of the ocean!

Her best friend is her room mate Mai who also has the Hime powers! Mikoto has a brother too but i should not reveal much about him! As a Hime, she is very powerful with the huge magickal two handed sword named Miroku which causes the Red fiery sparks, can cut a ship in two or cause the ground to crack open!

Each Hime can summon a creature or construct called a Child, and hers is a spiked giant that erupts from the earth. She is voiced by Ai Shimizu in the original Japanese and by Caitlynne Medrek in the English dub. For more about Mikoto and My Hime, I recommend the Mai Universe Wiki http://mai.wikia.com/wiki/Mai-Universe! Petra’s turn!

Petra:

I wish to commemorate a sword & sorcery catgirl too, however hers is of the sad tale, nya. Unfortunately too many have the sad cat’s life of the abuse, and we have the great sympathy towards Pink, the poor catgirl slave of the Dragon Pink, nya. It was a 3 part OVA or direct – to – home video animation of the early 1990’s, and I will not go into detail of the plot, because it was the naughty erotic / hentai purrody of the sword & sorcery tale for the adult viewers only, nya!

All I will say of the plot is that Pink was one of the explorers of the dungeons, caves & forests, in search of the monsters to slay & the treasures to collect, fighting the big boss villain at the end of each lurid epurrsode, nya. The rest of the group was compurrised of Pearce the elven sorceress, Bobo the barbarian with the axe, and Santa the swordsman leader, who was unkind to Pink. He would not even let her sit at the suppurr table, but that was least of the cruelty, nya!

Pink was the purretty catgirl of the short height & buxom purroportion, with the golden eyes, the caramel skin, and the long lush Pink hair down past her hips, nya! Her ears had the distinctive Black tips and her tail had the lovely stripes, nya! She wore the low cut, short Black & White Zebra stripe tunic, the Red sash, and the cat bell choker, nya! Pink was a very tenacious survivor and we purray that she later left the group for the happier healthier life of freedom, nya!

Melanakeami:

We will pray for Pink’s liberation & Betterment too! Ah well I just had a few quick words about another Pink haired, striped catgirl in the cute dress of the fantasy realm, Merle of the wonderful anime TV series The Vision of Escaflowne! Merle is one of the characters who the main character Hitomi meets when she mystically winds up on the other world amidst the feudal conflict! Escaflowne was such a gorgeous series of the late 90’s, of the 26 episodes & later movie!

I suppose that it might qualify as the ‘Planetary Romance’ sub-genre of the science fiction or fantasy. Oh gosh, it has one of the most beautiful opening theme songs I have ever heard!  But I should not digress, and hurry back to Merle! She is the vivacious faithful young tiger stripe catgirl with the tufted tail and the cute breezy Golden sun dress! You can read much more about cute widdle Mere at her Escaflowne Wiki Page http://escaflowne.wikia.com/wiki/Merle!

Nyanko:

Oh I will try to hurry too! Well, one of my favoritest anime series is Battle Athlete! It started as the 6 part OVA mini-series in 1997 purrduced by AIC, which was soon retold in the 26 epurrsode TV series Battle Athletes Victory, which has the more light hearted tone than the OVAs! It is set in the year 4999 when the girls train for the interplanetary Cosmic Beauty olympic compurrtition!

The main character is Akari, the daughter of the legendary champion! At the university meets the coaches & other great athletes such as Kris, Anna, Jessie, Ichan, Mylandah, Lahrrie & Tanya! Tanya Natdhipytadd is the outrageously frisky teenager from Africa! She has the lovely mocha skin, the fiery Red hair, mewsually barefoot and wearing the shorts & the knotted shirt!

Although she is not physically part cat, she has the wild playfully purredatory behavior, zestful spirit, agile physicality, the running style, and her dialect! We meet her brother later in the series, and oh they nothing alike! Tanya is there to compete, but is not quite as intensely driven – or as unhappy as some others, and she repurrsents the joyful fun side of the athletic camaraderie!

Yvonne:

She is the honorary cat, nya!

Kianalani:

Does Nya-sensei have much Battle Athletes stuff?

Nyanko:

Oh I have a few things; the OVA & TV DVDs, cards, a poster, a couple of art books, a couple of figures, some magazine articles, and a lovely animation cel of Akari! So who have you chosen to, ‘Lani?

Kianalani:

Wow today sure is the mew for the sword & sorcery type catgirls, because I have selected Tabby from the Dot Hack anime & game! Dot Hack is one of those enduring anime titles that has had several different TV series! It is set in the virtual fantasy sword & sorcery world of the online massive multi-player role play game, and in the Dot Hack Roots series, Tabby is one of the player character’s avatar characters and the irresistible peppy and perky catgirl!

She has the long light Brown hair, which she can whip like the tail, and emerging from the top are the light Brown ears with the White tips! She has the exotic cheek markings, the collar & bracelets and the low cut short crop top that accentuates the cleavage and bare tummy, with the Green gem in her belly button framed by the Kusazuri or Fauld – like skirt armor worn low on the hips!

Coordinating the ensemble are the matching Brown Suneate or greaves – like shin guards above the boots! For the fight she will put on the large Yellow Kote – like Yellow paw gloves with the claws & more Green gems! For more about Tabby, I suggest her page at the Dot Hack Wiki http://dothack.wikia.com/wiki/Tabby! Your turn, Vonny!

Yvonne:

The catgirl I wish to discuss is the animated catgirl although she is of the Disney and not the Japanese anime, and that is Treasure Planet’s Captain Amelia, nya! That movie is a science fiction outer space version of Treasure island, nya! She is the beautiful, smart, agile sharp expurrt captain of the naval ship RLS Legacy on the quest to find the Treasure Planet, nya! You can see her smiling and clinging to the rigging on the cover of the DVD, nya! She is the quick & nimble climber, nya!

She has the beautiful short Red hair & the Green eyes, the creamy complexion, the purrt ears, the cute fangs, with the Green eye shadow, the tall graceful slender build, and looks so refined & regal in her Captain’s uniform, nya! It is the Royal Blue which is rimmed & lined in the Gold, with the White collar & tights, the Gold gloves, buttons & epawletts, and the thigh high Black boots, nya! Adding to her regal refinement is her voice purrvided by Emma Thompson, who we are the big fans of, nya!

Along the way there also sparks the romance between her and Dr. Doppler the scientist, but I should not spoil the plot further for those who might not have seen Treasure Planet, which turns 10 years old this year, however if y’all would like more information I will recommend the wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treasure_Planet, and Captain Amelia’s page at the Disney Wiki http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Captain_Amelia, nya! OK I’m done nyow,so it is back to Mike,  nya!

Mike:

Last but not least I would like to include Koma, of the anime Shrine of Morning Mist! The delightful supernatural anime  based upon the manga by Hiroki Ugawa is about the girls of the school’s miko club who wind up defending against the evil spirits! Not all of the spirits are evil though, such as Koma, a Bakeneko cat spirit who can assume the human girl form! She has fair skin, Golden eyes, and usually wears the Black dress to match her short Black hair and kitty ears.

She tends to be rather stoic, quiet and serious, although she does get excited by cake! In the original Japanese version she is voiced by Yui Hori, and in the American English dubbed version she is voiced by Vibe Jones! The series has one season of 26 twelve – minute episodes in the  3 disk DVD Shrine of the Morning Mist Perfect Collection from Anime Works! It was a lot of heroic miko anime fun at the great bargain price, with a few special features included!

For more thorough information about the series I will recommend the Anime News Network article http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1128 and the the wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrine_of_the_Morning_Mist! That will do it for this month’s spotlight, but another famous catgirl heroine’s figure figures quite “purr-ominently” in right now in our

Collectibles & Toy Talk:

James Cameron’s Avatar Neytiri mini-bust!

Nyanko:

Hai, we are big fans of Jame’s Cameron’s Avatar and the heroic purrincess Neytiri te Tskaha Mo’at’ite, or just Ney’tiri for short of the Navi Omaticaya Clan of the planet Pandora, purrtrayed by Zoe Saldana who is one of our favoritest actresses! We commemorated Ney’tiri in the celebrity catgirl spotlight portion of our March 2011 Mew! You know, for our annual Halloween Trick ‘R Eating & Cosplay Purrowl, in 2010 we were the hybrid Chibi Avatar Na’vi “Neko-maticaya Clan!”

The Catgirls:

NEKO-MATICAYA CLAN, GO!!! NYA!

We have reviewed quite a few purroducts purrtaining to Avatar, such as the figures, books, calendar, magazines, DVDs & CD and nyow we have this beautiful mini bust statue of Neytiri! It is the limited edition of 2750 mini busts, purriced at $75 by Gentle Giant Studios! It is packaged in the purrotective inner foam box inside the 9.5″ x 10.5″ x 6″ box! It was cast in the poly – stone from the movie’s 3D model data of the character! The mini – bust stands appurroximately 8″ tall including the lush jungle flora base, and 9″ wide given her outstretched bow arm, nocking the arrow aimed her purrey!

The bow string is actually made of the string. From the hips up she measures about 6″. She is the sexy powerful lean lithe Blue catgirl with the subtle stripes, the Golden eyes, the lovely long Black braided hair with the colorful bead! She has faithful portraiture to resemble the actress, the supple pierced ears, the bracelets, arm band, the strategically draped feathers from the necklace just barely covering her boobies! The straps of her loin cloth ride low on the hips to accentuate her firm butt & the catlike tail swishing in the anticipation of the kill, the bow curving as she pulls the taut string back!

She is intricately sculpted from the braids of her hair and the intent gaze of the  down to slender fingers, her inny belly button and the lush ferns & blooms of the circular base! The paint job is amazing, and as the added bonus is included the metal Blue UV flashlight to shine on her in the dark to reveal her beautiful bioluminescent freckles— kawaii! There is also the little numbered card enclosed to certify the authenticity. I am extremely impurressed with this beautiful repurrsentation of our favorite Na’vi Blue catgirl purrincess, and I will give it the high purraise and the grade of “A” as in Avatar!

Melanakeami:

What is the size scale of the figure?

Nyanko:

I am not sure… I did not see it on the box!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

purrhaps Jen could deduce the scale!

Jeannie:

Based upon the purroportions of the purrior Neytiri figures we have reviewed, since the bust measures 6″ from the hips up, given the character’s long legs I will theorize that a full figure of her at this scale would be purrhaps 13″ tall. Purrsuming the character is appurroximately 10′ tall, or 120″. 120 / 13 = 9.23, therefore I estimate the Neytiri bust is of about 1/9 scale, but my estimation might not be purrcise.

Kianalani:

Arigato Jen!

Jeannie:

Ney’tiri was shown briefly during the Oscars Ceremony “Let’s Go to the Movies” montage.

Tara-chan:

Yatahh nya!

Nyssy:

Sugoi!

Mike:

Oh yeah I noticed that! Ah.. thank you for that review, sensei! And now here is Tara-chan to tell us about the–

Transformers Prime Legion Class Arcee Action Figure

Tara-chan:

Transformers Purrime is the latest incarnation of the animated Transformers TV series purrtaining to the war between the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons her on Earth, nya! For our review of the Transformers Purrime: Darkness Rising DVD, see the January 2012 Mew, nya! Among the Autobots is Arcee, who our favorite of the Transformers, nya!

I certainly purrfur her design in this series and – and the  other animated series more than the live-action Transformers movies, and – and we have been very eagerly awaiting these purrticular figures, nya!

This is the petite widdle figure of Arcee, figure 003 in series 2 of the Legion Class of Transformera Purrime figures from Hasbro, nya!

She is similarly packaged in the plastic blister on the hangy card, starting out in her humanoid robot mode with the 10 points of articulation, but you can easily transform her into the motorcycle mode because this figure is of the easy Skill Level One, nya! Level Two is Intermediate Skill level and Level Three is the top most complicated level, nya!

This one is recommended for kids aged 5+, nya. She is 2.75″ tall as the dark Violet Blue, Black and – and Silver bot, with the translucent double barreled Red blaster gun that can snap on to her hand or on her motorcycle side, nya! Her wheels spin and- and she has the minute purrcise detail down to her emblems and- and Blue eyes at this teeny scale, nya!

The simple 8 step instruction sheet is included, nya! Also included is the widdle card that lists Arcee’s statistics, of the strength level of 4, Intelligence level of 7, Speed of 8, Endurance of 5, Rank of 7, Courage of 9, Fireblast power of 4, and – and skill level of 6, so she is the very fast, brave, stealthy purroficient leader, nya!

She might lack the tremendous strength and – and the fire power of the bigger bots, but she has the supurrb skills, nya! i am pleased with this widdle figure, I already have the spot for her on the shelf, and – and I am going to call her the Faerie Arcee, nya! That concludes my toy report, but we still have more of Arcee to talk about, so here is Jenjen to tell us all about the–

Transformers Purrime Deluxe First Edition Arcee Action Figure, nya!

Jeannie:

Arigato. For our review of the Revenge of the Fallen Arcee action figure see the September 2009 Mew’ for our review of the Gen One Arcee Mini Polystone Statue see the January 2010 Mew; and for our review of the Transformers Animated Arcee action figure see the March 2010 Mew. This import toy by Hasbro is part of the purroduct line including figures of Bumblebee & Starscream. It is intended for ages 5+ due to the small parts, with the skill rating of 2 of 3 indicating an intermediate level of difficulty in transforming the toy from the vehicle mode to robot mode.

Packaged in the clear plastic clamshell on the ‘J’ hook card with the beautiful illustration of her on the front and photos of the figures on the back, Arcee arrives in her stunning street racing motorcycle mode, accessorized by twin attachable arm blades, and a cardboard display stand. She is purrimarily Blue – Violet, Black & Satin Silvery Gray with Mauve stripes. The tires, spokes, fenders, forks, stanchions, suspension, seat, console, handlebars & hand grips are Black. The kickstand is Black with the Silvery bolt. The attachable blades are Blue -Violet & Satin Silvery Gray.

The brakes and exhaust pipes are the Satin Silvery Gray. The fairings, tail, rims, mirrors, gas tank and frame are Blue-Violet, and there is the Mauve stripe on the frame. The windscreen and head lamps are clear Blue. The bike turns, wheels spin and the kickstand flips down. The transformation purrocess is detailed on the sided instruction sheet, with appurroximately 2 dozen steps. The only awkward step I had was with her purrsnickity feet which required an extra bit of very careful effort to rotate into place. She stands appurroximately 5.75″ tall in robot mode.

She has a Blue – Violet head, collar, lower legs, lower abdomin, shoulder & Chest armor. Her face, torso & knees are the Satiny Silvery gray. She has Blue eyes & Red Autobot emblem. Her feet, thighs, arms, hands, tummy & neck are Black. She has the Mauve stripes on her calves & face. The points of articulation include her neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hips, knees, with ball joints the very fluid range of abductions & poses. The blades easily snap on to her forearms so that she might fearlessly slash at her enemies with great nimble agility, purrcision & quickness.

Her anthropomorphic features are fully disguised when she is in the motorcycle form, although unlike in the cartoon, many of her vehicle parts (eg windscreen & wheels) are quite visible on her back in robot mode, and thus the toy is a bit bulkier looking than in the cartoon. Nevertheless, she is a splendidly lithe combination of graceful curves & sharp angles, and has a far more pleasingly sleek, anthropomorphic design compurred to the live-action movie version which I thought did a disservice to her and the other Transformers characters.

The box – like Dark Blue cardboard display stand measures 6″ long x 2″ wide by 2 1/8″ tall. It has the show’s logo on the front, Autobot & Decepticon emblems on the sides. The stand is big enough to displayer Arcee in either mode, and the folded instruction sheet can easily be stored inside the stand.

Although, it seems more like a sort of a large “stage” compurred to the figure, and I think I’d purrfur a smaller sort of pedestal for Arcee but I can easily arrange that, and in summation, I am very pleased with the quality & intricacy of the figure’s sculpt, paint & articulation. That is all for the toy talk, but more mecha awaits when we return with our–

Movie & DVD Reviews

(snip) (one short break later…)

Real Steel single disk edition DVD!

Jeannie:

Welcome back. Real Steel was one of our favoritest movies of 2011. For our review of the movie, please see the December 2011 Mew. The single disk, R1 NTSC standard DVD is a fairly no frills package and actor Dakota Goyo unfortunately absent from the front cover image of Hugh Hackman flanked by robots Atom & Metro.  There are no interesting inserts or booklets inclosed in the plastic case, aside from the advertisement brochures. The PG-13 rated 127 minute feature film is purrsented in the widescreen format in the 2.35:1 screen aspect ratio.

Purrior to the DVD’s main menu screen are the audio set up choices, which also appurr on the main menu, and the front loaded green screen purreview trailers for The Avengers, War Horse, and The Help. The main menu selections are scene selection (scenes 1-20), set up (spoken languages, subtitles, DVD registration) & special features (bloopurrs, The Making of Metal Valley, Building the Bots, audio commentary, Sneak Peeks). The Language options are English, French Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital and the English DVS in 2.0 Dolby Digital.

The Sneak peek is merely an ad for the TV series Castle. The subtitle options are English Subtitled for Deaf or Hearing Impaired (SDH), French & Spanish, purrsented in the Yellow bold sans serif font with the fine black outline. The English Descriptive Video Service (DVS) is a female narrator’s voice describing what happens on the screen. Director / Purrducer Shawn Levy’s optional audio commentary is quite enthused, insightful & loquacious, The 2.5 minutes of bloopurrs include the flubbed dialogue, joking actors, and various mistakes on the set.

the 14.25 minute Making of Metal Valley examines how they created the sequence of the rainy scrap yard where Atom is discovered, with a look at the aggregate works location, set design, construction, purrevisulaization, equipment cranes, green screens, digital FX, rain FX, wirework, and the “digital pipeline” to the film editor. This featurette includes comments by Shawn Levy, purrducers Mary Mclagen & Eric Hedaynt, purrduction designer Tom Mayor, SFX supurrvisor Joe Digaetano, stunt coordinator Garrett Warren, Dakota’s stunt double Kelli Barksdale, 1st assistant director / purrducer Josh Mclagen, VFX supurrvisor Erik Nash and editor Dean Zimmerman.

The 5.5 minute Building the Bots focuses on the robots, which are the hybrid of full scale purractical mechanical, digital FX, puppeteers & motion-captured actors to create the movie’s robot purrize fighters Atom, Zeus, Midas, Twin Cities, Metro, Ambush, Noisy Boy and various other background bots. This featurette has comments by Shawn Levy, Tom Mayor, Steven Speilberg, writer John Gatkins, actors Dakota Goyo Hugh Jackman & Evangeline Lily; and robotics FX Supurrvisor John Rosengrant of Legacy Effects, who worked for the late mechanical FX genius Stan Winston for over 20 years.

There are no robots in the next movie in our DVD reviews, but there is the old school clockwork automaton, and another legendary cinematic mechanical FX genius, so nyow I will turn The Mew over to Kianalani for her discussion of the–

Hugo single disk edition DVD

Kianalani:

Arigato! Hugo is one of our favoritest movies of 2011! It is the wonderful charming beautiful movie! I think Tara – chan pretty much summed up the cast, the crew and the plot, so I’ll just comment on the DVD. It is available in several different editions, such as the DVD / Blu – Ray combo, the 3D edition, and this single disk standard DVD, which I am discussing!

The single disk Region one NTSC standard DVD is a fairly no frills package containing the movie in 2D only, the nearly 20 minute documentary on the making of the movie, the instructions on how to download a UV streaming copy, several previews, and no booklets. It is lot a lot of features, but if you just want the wonderful movie then it is the good bargain!

Prior to the main menu screen are the front – loaded ads for Titanic 3D, TinTin DVD, Footloose remake DVD, and an anti smoking announcement. The main menu choices are to play the movie, set up the audio & subtitles, select a certain scene, and the special features. The language options are English, French, Spanish & the English descriptive video service!

The PG rated movie lasts 126 minutes, and is in the widescreen format. The special features include the documentary & more ads for Titanic 3D, Tintin, Footloose, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s which turns 50 years old! Shoot The Moon: The Making Of Hugo is a neat widdle look behind the scenes of the movie, with comments by several of the movie’s cast & crew!

The commentors include actors Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, ben Kingsley, Christopher Lee, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Francis De la Tour; plus director Martin Scorsese, producer Graham King, author Brian Selznick, screen writer john Logan, Visual FX supervisor Robert Legato, and Mathiloe De Cachy who trained the weener dogs and the Doberman!

Oh by the way, if y’all are interested in seeing the restored original color version of Georges Melies’ short 1902 movie La Voyage Dans La Lune or A Trip to the Moon, which is integral to the plot of Hugo, I have to recommend the limited deluxe edition of the music CD La Voyage Dans la Lune by the great French techno group Air! It includes the movie on a DVD! Now here is ‘Keami with her review of the–

Justice League: Doom single disk edition DVD!

Melanakeami:

Hai, Justice League: Doom is the latest in the series of DC UNiverse OVAs! We tend to enjoy them very much even though they tend to seem way to rushed & short, but the quality of the story, designs, animation, voice acting, and music are great! It was produced & directed by lauren Montgomery, and written by the late Dwayne McDuffie (1962 – 2011) who was a top prolific comics & animation writer.

The executive producers were Bruce Timm & Sam Register, with co- producer Alan Burnett, voice director Andrea Romano, editor Christopher Lozinski, and composer Christopher Drake! The story is somewhat based upon the Justice League comic book story “Tower of Babel” and it is also an homage to the Challenge of the Superfriends cartoon, as the heroes fight the Legion of Doom!

The heroes of the Justice League include Batman / Bruce Wayne (voiced by Kevin Conroy), Superman (voiced by Tim Daly), Wonder Woman (Susan Eisenberg), Green Lantern / Hal Jordan (Nathan Fillian), The Flash / Barry Allen (Michael Rosenbaum), Martian Manhunter (Carl Lumbly), and Cyborg (Bumper Robinson) with help from Alfred (Robin Atkins Downes), and Lois Lane (Grey Delisle)!

The villains of the Legion of Doom include Vandal Savage (Phil Morris), The Cheetah (Claudia Black), Star Sapphire (Olivia D’abo), Bane (Carlos Alazraqui), Paul Blackthorn (Metallo), Alexis Denisof (Mirror Master) and Ma’alefa’ak the evil martian, However before the Justice League fights them, first they have to stop the evil Royal Flush gang of the criminals with the poker deck motif!

Robin & Lex Corp are mentioned but unseen. From his dome shaped Hall of Doom headquarters that rises from the swamp, Vandal Savage is an immortal criminal mastermind who recruits the villains to fight the heroes, using information hacked from Batman’s computer to exploit their weaknesses, and with the heroes out of the way, he can then proceed with his plan to destroy most of the world!

I thought the tale was a lot of fun and very thrilling with plenty of violent action, although it was way too rushed & short and there seemed to be a few unresolved plot holes or threads pertaining to secret identities and I was surprised that Wonder Woman did not use her magickal lasso in certain scenes, for example to discover the truth behind a perceived attack by her catgirl enemy, The Cheetah!

They have the fierce fight with the great choreography! In addition to her claws, her tail is prehensile. She has the neat costume with the Black cropped tank top, shorts, fingerless gloves & toeless socks! Star Sapphire has a pretty costume with the iridescent purple gem in her tummy! Another female villain is Ten of the Royal Flush Gang who throws the deadly razor sharp playing cards.

I suppose she reminds me a bit of the Marvel Comics villain, Bullseye. Ten is voiced by Juliet Landau, so there are several alumni of Buffy & Angel in the voice cast including Nathan Fillion & Alexis Denisof! The language choices  of the DVD are English, Spanish, French, Portugues & Thai, with the optional White bold san serif subtitles in English SDH, Spanish, Portugues & Thai.

The video is available in different editions, such as the no frills standard DVD, the 2 disk DVD / Blu – Ray combo which has more features, and a boxed set of the latter which includes a widdle figure of The Flash! I am just reviewing the standard DVD edition which is the single R1 NTSC standard DVD with the 77 minute, PG – 13 rated movie presented in the widescreen format and Dolby sound!

Before the menu screen are the front – loaded previews for the Batman Year One animated DVD, the Green Lantern animated TV series, and an odd looking video game called Gotham City Imposters. The special features on the DVD are just previews for Superman vs the Elite, Thundercats, Young Justice, Mad, and the DCU App…

…but we do not think of previews as special features, but more like ads. The other bonus are the instructions to download an “Ultraviolet” digital copy, just like in that Hugo DVD! Now here is N’ell again to tell us about another recent animated movie,

The Secret World of Arrietty!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

I will have to echo what Lani said earlier in how much we adore the anime by Studio Ghibli! I think their movies are about the best that animated movies get, so that is the high standard & expectation we had in anticipation for The Secret World of Arrietty and I am happy to say that it is the utterly superb movie!

Based upon the upon the The Borrowers story, by Mary Norton, the movie pertains to Arrietty who is one of the Borrowers, the 4″ tall people who secretly reside in certain homes and borrow things. She and her mom & Dad have the beautiful widdle home underneath the floors of a lovely regular sized mansion!

Residing in the mansion is a sickly boy named Shawn who is there to convalesce prior to his pending surgery. It is the lovely pace  with the gardens in the rural area by the pretty meadow & forest! After he catches a glimpse of Arrietty their friendship begins, against the fears of her parents who try to keep out of sight!

That is because of the dangers presented to Borrowers such as the birds, cats and other critters, plus the humans they fear would subjugate them, such as the housekeeper. Unfortunately Shawn means well but he is a bit annoying and puts the Borrowers in jeopardy, whereas the housekeeper is the real threat!

The main character Arrietty is quite cute, charming, and brave. It is amazing to see what our world looks like to those of her size, with the gardens like the jungle and the spaces within the house like the caverns! So to Arrietty the sugar cube is about the size of the cantaloupe, and the dress pin is like the sword!

It has the great sound mix especially when you hear the crickets in the night, great voice cast and the wonderful music by Cecile Corbel, although I do quibble with the “Summertime” song by Bridgit Mendler which is played during the end credits which feels like the lesser tacked – on song.

I hope the DVD will be released soon and I would like to see the movie with the subtitles and the original Japanese voices! I suppose the only other quibble I had was that the movie did seem slightly abrupt, but The Secret World of Arrietty has the magnificent animation, designs, FX & scenic art, and the story is full of the charm, wonder & beauty!

Tara-chan:

I want… I want to cosplay as Arrietty, nya!

Kianalani:

That is the good idea!

Yvonne:

We could use the block of the White foam for the sugar cube purrop, nya!

Nyssy

You could use the potato chip bag clip for the ponytail!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

That is all of our reviews of movies & DVDs, but the movie topic is far from over as we turn our attention to the–

TV Talk:

Mewsings About The 84th Annual Academy Awards Ceremony!

Mike:

The 84th Annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences Awards ceremony, or The Oscars, convened at the Kodak Theater on Sunday February 26th, so we gathered ’round the TV to cheer for our favorite films & filmmakers! It is that rare opportunity to see the films’ designers, writers & technicians in the spotlight, who don’t get as much media attention the rest of the year as other celebrities might.

Of course we are there to cheer for our favorite actors to, and The Ladies of the Mew here like to see all of the pretty, glamorous fashions too! The 90 minutes of pre-show fashion coverage started at 7 pm as the stars strolled the Red carpet into the theatre. Tom Hanks led the viewers on a peek of the back stage area where the winners proceed, and then Billy Crystal hosted the show for the 9th time!

Typically I think the ceremony is overladen with scripted humor, montages, and performances of skits, songs & dance, while many non-actor acceptance speeches often get rushed or cut short. The show should be there to honor the winners- and not just the actors! Of course there should be the categories of best songs and scores, but they should not take up any more time than any other category!

Nyssy:

Hai in spite of the scripted bits that were not amewsing, I think it was one of the better Oscars in many years!

Jeannie:

While I like the purretty fashions, sadly the Science & Technical Award cattygories continue to receive insufficient coverage in compurrison.

Nyanko:

I guess Jen has the point- they did spend a whole hour and a half on the red carpet focusing on the fashions!

Petra:

Jessica Chastain’s ornately embroidered Gold & Black dress, nya!

Nyanko:

Milla Jovovich was there too! She is one of my favorite actresses and she wore the alluring asymmetric dress!

Kianalani:

Yay Milla! I hope her next Resident Evil movie comes to the dive – in theater!

Nyanko:

She was one of our picks for favorite costumes of 2011, as M’ Lady of The Three Musketeers!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Oh oh Gwyneth Paltrow had the asymmetric dress too, with the coat and one bracelet which was so elegant!

Melanakeami:

Hai! I liked the strapless Green Vera Wang dress with the dangly earrings worn by Viola Davis!

Yvonne:

Roony Mata, Tina Fey, Melissa McCarthy & were among the beautiful favorites, nya!

Mike:

Roony Mata reminded me a bit of Audrey Hepburn!

Nyssy:

I can see that! Cameron Diaz was so glamorous in the strapless creamy color dress with the train!

Nyanko:

Sandra Bullock had the cute ponytail coiffure with the Silver, Black & White gown!

Kianalani:

I thought Meryl was so beautiful in the shiny Gold dress, almost off-shoulder with the deep neckline!

Yvonne:

The gold dress and the earrings match the trophy, nya!

Nyssy:

The couture seemed to embrace the strapless and the asymmetric style!

Tara-chan:

Hai I liked Angelina’s sexy strapless Black dress with the side slit, and – and Penelope Cruz’s off – shoulder Violet dress, nya!

Jeannie:

I think my pick would be the backless, deep V neckline dress that Jennifer Lopez wore.

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Natalie Portman was so beautiful in the strapless Red dress!

Petra:

Bun cosplayed in her Purrincess Padme Amidala Epurrsode III White costume for Halloween, nya!

Melanakeami:

I was busy with the kelp maze so I did not get to see her costume!

Petra:

Oh oh well we have the photos, nya!

Melanakeami:

Arigato!

Petra:

Francesca Lo Schiavo was so purretty in the strapless silvery dress to accept her award for the Hugo set decoration, nya!

Yvonne:

It was a good night for Hugo and The Artist, nya!

Kianalani:

It was the good haul!

Jeannie:

I hoped the robots of Real Steel would have won the FX, but it was good to see the old school automatons win.

Nyssy:

The Muppet song won too!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Ooh I hope Arietty might be nominated for next year’s Oscars!

Tara-chan:

Hai and we will serve more of the Oscar fish for the snacks, nya!

Jeannie:

The Astronotus ocellatus was purrticularly tasty.

Mike:

Y’all made short work of ’em! Well, ah let’s continue the TV Talk with

Our Favorite Recent Commercials & Purreview Trailers!

Yvonne:

We are not necessarily endorsing any of the advertised purroducts or services, but we just find the commercials entertaining, nya!

Nyanko:

I liked the spot with Ann LutzenKirchen of the Winthrope Women’s Soccer Team, and the spots for the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament! Yatahh!

Jeannie:

The Go Daddy commercials continue to be amewsing, with our favorite driver Danica Patrick getting the massage, and body painting the model with Gillian Michaels.

Kianalani:

The Superbowl Half – Time commercial with Clint Eastwood was quite poignant, the JC Penny commercial with Ellen DeGeneres in the wild west is cute, oh oh and the Honda CRV commercial with Matthew Broderick parodying his Ferris Bueller role was fun!

Mike:

Oh that was great! I also rather liked Volkswagon’s Star Wars commercials, with the Mos Eisley Cantina and with the dogs barking the Imperial March!

Melanakeami:

Speaking of the dogs, I like the “Dog Tested Dog Approved” commercials with the dogs going to the beach & camping in the Subaru SUV!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Ooh I liked the Google commercial with The Muppets singing Under Pressure, and the latest trailer for The Avengers movie, with Black Widow, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Loki & The Hulk! I hope we get that movie at the dive – in theatre!

Tara-chan:

I liked… I liked the trailers for Studio Ghibli’s The Secret World of Arrietty, Pixar’s Brave, Aardman Animation’s Pirates, and Laika’s ParaNorman!

Yvonne:

Speaking of the animation, I like the Met Life insurance commercial with all the cartoon characters, nya!

Nyssy:

I have mixed feelings about the The Direct TV “Don’t have a Grandson with a dog collar” ad, because on one hand the girl in the commercial is mean in the school, but she does have the cute piercings!

Petra:

I must purrofess that I would purrfur the cat’s bell collar to the dog collar, nya! Speaking of the cat, I like the the Hyundai ad with the Cheetah pounce, the Mentos UP2U chewing gum ad with the tiger in the office, and the “Mischief is in the Details” commercial for the Jason Wu line at Target, with the animated black cat, nya!

Nyanko:

Kuro neko!

Tara-chan:

Kawaii nya!

Yvonne:

A couple other favorite recent commercials are the Red Lobster Lobsterfest, the Arby’s and Wendy’s fish sammiches, and Verizon 4GLTE commercial with the guy wrestling the delicious looking gator, nya!

Jeannie

The gator meat has the good taste.

Melanakeami:

The snappy gator was trying to taste the guy with the phone, heehee!

Kianalani:

Speaking of the lizards, the commercial for the movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island looked so much fun with the dinosaurs, and the part with The Rock’s saying “They won’t stop until you feed them” as he flexes his pecs!

Nyssy:

He has the nice tattoos too! Oh speaking of the pecs flex, I was amewsed by the Old Spice “Smell the Power” commercial, in which the muscular chap crashes his Jet Ski into the laundry room, and then flies through the ceiling, heehee!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

I was delighted to see the long – awaited  “FemShep” version of the online trailer for the Mass Effect 3 video game! They finally decided to promote the female version of the game’s hero, Commander Shepard!

Petra:

Speaking of the forthcoming science fiction, trailer for Iron Sky looked purretty amewsing & thrilling, nya!

Yvonne:

I saw the ad for Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter but I have mixed feelings… I am all for the slayage and it looks like a hoot, but it also has all that displeasing slow mo speed ramping technique, nya.

Jeannie:

That is the shame.

Nyanko:

I have been seeing more ads for John Carter! It is the longly awaited movie!

Melanakeami:

I have seen an ad for it too, although I don’t think I have spotted Dejah Thoris in the ads yet!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Dejah would be hard to miss at the glance, unless the characters are overdressed in the movie!

Mike:

Ah, I’m not sure! So are there any others? Nope? Well then… I guess we’re done!

The Cat Lady Sings…

Tara-chan:

That will wrap it up for another edition of The Mew, and- and we wish to thank our friends from Sheila May’s for joining us, nya!

Ne’ellakaliomi:

Gosh that was quick!

Kianalani:

Oh it was a lot of fun and we thank you for inviting us!

Melanakeami:

Petra:

Mike:

the catgirls & mermaids sing:
