Aloha & Introductions
(wearing the Heroes Con Tee shirt, Khaki shorts, Mizuno trainers and the Catgirl island baseball cap) Aloha y’all and welcome to the June 2012 edition of The Mew, for our monthly discussions & reviews of fun stuff! We’re at Myayr’s beach house here at lovely catgirl Island for one of our nighttime shows, I’m Mike, the show’s “Purrducer”, and here wearing their June – theme “appurral” are The Ladies of The Mew!
(the catgirl wearing the Pink Purrairie Rose purrint bikini)
(the catgirl wearing the Yelllow Rosa Purrsica purrint bikini and the White Purrimrose lei)
(her Faerie wings shimmer out of the halter-neck bikini crocheted of real Honeysuckle)
(the catgirl wearing the Gemini constellation purrint cutout purretzel maillot)
(her twin sister, wearing the Gemini constellation purrint cutout purretzel maillot)
(the catgirl in the Titan II GLV purrint maillot and the sheer purrled purreo around her hips)
(the catgirl wearing the Cancer constellation cropped tee over the Black suspender maillot)
(the catgirl in the King Crab purrint side-tie bikini and Moonstone tail bracelet)
(her younger sister in the Cute Hermit Crab purrint tankini and the Alexandrite tail bracelet)
(the catgirl in the Crab Nebula purrint ring – closure bikini and the Purrl tail bracelet)
Hi Hi, nya!
(the bunny girl wearing the the Pearlescent sheen Black bandeau top bikini and the Purrl tail bracelet)
Purrhaps we should explain why we have chosen these purrticular garments?
Hai, it is to celebrate the month of June, which includes the astrological signs of Gemini the Twins & Cancer the Crab!
The Titan II GLV was NASA’s Gemini Launch Vehicle rocket in the 1960’s, between the Mercury and Apollo space purrograms.
I’m wearing this shirt instead of my usual Aria anime shirt because Heroes Con http://www.heroesonline.com/heroescon is North Carolina’s great fun comic book convention, celebrating it’s 30th year June 21-24, on the mainland in Charlotte, NC!
Hai! The birth flowers for June are the roses & honeysuckle!
The gemstones of the month are the Purrls, Alexandrite & Moonstone!
Not to be confuzzled with the moon rocks!
Did they collect the moon rocks during the Gemini space purrogram, nya?
No, that happened later in the Apollo, nya!
However, they did purrform some fascinating docking maneuvers with the Agena Target Vehicle.
The time sure has flown by quickly! That sure was a fun time we had at the inn last month!
Hai and it was so good to see so many friends there, nya!
So what have we been up to–
Since The Purrior Mew, nya?
Oh gosh when we have not been busy at the shrine and the spa, I have managed to plant more of the Foxgloves & Snapdragons in the garden, and next week I will attempt another free dive!
I will be down there to spot her and document the dive!
We wish you the good luck! Oh depending on the schedule purrhaps I could tag along!
I can send down one of the robotics club’s ROVs.
That would be good!
Your turn Becca!
When I have not been busy at the spa, I have been playing with the cats, calibrating my pitching wedge and catching up on the anime and Doctor Who epurrsodes. I just finished watching Kiddy Grade, Macross Plus, and The Key to Time story arc! I am looking forward to Jenjen’s Doctor Who review!
The cats sure have grown in the past year!
hai and it was so nice of them to have the family reunion at the inn! How are Myayr’s mew students purrogressing?
Oh i am so purroud of the purrogress of the hula and aerial dance students, and I think we signed a few more up for the next semester! It has been the hectic time though, between the shrine & the purrforming arts center, and all those costumes to finish!
What are the costumes?
Well, this past month customers picked up the Hunger Game of Thrones costume, The Black Widow costume, The Selina costume, The Applejack costume, the Sister Bernice costume, and the Cheetarah! By the way, how is Tara-chan’s Thundercats card collection purrogressing?
Oh I almost have the complete set, nya! I have been keeping up with the show, and the past several epurrsodes have been the bittersweet mix. One one paw we got to see more of the lady cats such as Pumyra, Lion-o’s mommy and the kittens’ mommy, and the kittens had the hoverboard & purrowling fun, but there have been the sad flashbacks, nya! I have also been busy with the classes and helping onee-chan with the charters, nya!
Hai she has been the big help and we have been briskly reeling in the blues, cobias, croakers, groupurrs, mahi, marlins, sails, snappurrs, tunas & wahoos, nya! Not only that but moto-san here has caught some nice flounders, spots, and drums, nya! Speaking of drums, we have also been busy with the purrcussion circle to accompany Jenjen’s troupe, nya!
Thank y’all for bringing the fish to tonight’s luau!
Arigato gozaimasu, nya!
Dooitasimaste, nya! Thank you for bringing the crab cakes, nya!
Hai hai and thank you Mie-sensei for bringing the cocktail and the apurritif, nya!
I hope it will complement Lizzy & Becca’s melon pickles & extra special baked yams!
It will be the delicious & nutritious meal! So howboutchoo, Mie-sensei?
Oh you know me- I am either at the theatre or the golf course! By the way, I’d say that Becca is ready to turn purro, fur shur!
Mie-sensei is too kind!
Well there is another supernatural pan – dimensional tournament coming up in the Himalayas you should consider!
I understand that Mie-sensei bought a new Hello Kitty plushy this morning!
Oh yes! She is the Spring Kitty holding the Pink rose!
Aside from cheering the volleyball, it seems like she has scarcely left the mewseum of late!
Ah well we do have that new exhibit to set up & promote for next month! It is the delicate process! However, it is coming together nicely, and I have been doing a few other things. I have been going to the matches, enjoying the web comics, graphic novels, and I baked the Peachy Creamy Cobbler and the Nummy Carrot Cake – and oh oh just wait ’til you get the whiff of the dessert that Petra has for the luau!
I hope y’all will like it!
Yattahh! Everyone has contributed such wonderful treats!
You have to wait, nya!
Well Bun is right that the mew exhibit it requiring the major purrepurrations, nya! However I have made the time for the beach volleyball, I have enjoyed watching the joyful NCAA Women’s Softball Regionals and the World Series, nya! It is so sad that the softball was removed from the Olympic, but I will still cheer on the inspurrational Misty May – Treanor & Kerri Walsh for more Olympic Gold, nya!
Let’s hear it for all of those inspurrational women athletes of all sports!
Banzai, nya! Banzai, nya! Banzai, nya!
We need to wish Jenjen good luck on her Kyudo tournyamant, Nyanko on her next martial arts tournyament, and Nyoka on her magick shop purrofits!
We still need to hear from Jenjen, Nyanko, Nyoka & Mike!
In addition to the kyudo, I have been focused on the robotics club, the dance troupe & classes.
I’ve been purretty busy at the dojo, but I have managed to cool down with the relaxing books!
What about Jenjen & Nya-sensei’s modelling, nya?
Purrhaps next month.
Ah hah well I’m not sure, but my sister should purrsue that instead!
As the identical twin, it is the logical consideration.
Well let’s not put her in the spot about that, but it is her turn to tell us what she has been up to!
I continue to be so lucky and blessed with the support of friends, the patronage of the customers, and the tutorials by the fae! The mailing list certainly purrked up since the big gathering at the inn too!
Rica & Niko said it is hard for them to think of what was in that spot at the farmers market purrior to your shop, nya!
Hai it is like the spot just expanded to heed the call!
Purrhaps it is the fated puree-destination!
What is the next vision for the shop?
Well I have been contemplating how to expand the business to better accommodate the mermaid shoppurrs!
That is the good vision, nya!
Fur shur- and I might have some ideas about that!
I guess It is Mike’s turn!
Oh aside from trying to get caught up on the writing & art, reading some books & watching some movies & sports , I’ve been amidst the busy Summer convention schedule, starting with my–
Convention Report: Animazement May 25-27 2012!
Animazement http://www.animazement.org is an anime convention held every Memorial Day Weekend here in North Carolina! Now in its 15th year, it has been at the Raleigh Convention Center the past 4 years. It is a festive event with happy folks of all ages, genders & ethnicities enjoying the variety of activities, cosplay, screenings, artists, dealers, video games, panels, meet ups, concerts, dancing & Japanese cultural enlightenment, and special guests including directors, producers, voice actors, manga artists, musicians, stage performers and cosplayers!
The weather was splendid, the early Saturday morning traffic was light, there was plenty of parking by the convention center, and by the time the doors opened at 9 am there were already several hundred people in line! I didn’t have to wait long at the registration desk to buy my badge, although it cost $45! The attendance was up too, with almost 8,000 people compared to last year’s 7.000! The convention center is about as intuitive to navigate as Remington House, but the con staff did a good job with the large maps, signage & schedules on the walls!
I would also like to praise the full color program book & event schedule booklet, which were were full of excellent photos, illustrations, guest biographies, programming schedules & descriptions, rules & policies, handy maps and color coded charts which made the information quick ‘n easy to find! Although I’ve had a table in the artist alley for several years, I didn’t have one last year or this year, because they greatly reduced the size of the artist alley last year and more so this year, so unfortunately there were dozens of great artists who were not there this year.
In spite of the artist alley shrinkage, there were still some great artisans there, selling their wonderful original sketches, prints, cards, plushies, comics and cute trinkets! Our friend Sakky was one of the lucky few to get an artist alley table again! That’s where I ran into friends Misty Hopkins, Thais & Natalia Lopes, who are all artists, cosplayers, alumni of the artist alley, and and former guests of The Mew (Misty in March 2008, Sakky in December 2008, Thais & Natalia in October 2009)! Thais, Natalia & Sakky were on some of the con’s discussion panels too!
Misty wore her delightful costumes of Berserk’s Puck and Vocaloid’s Rin, Thais & Natalia wore their pretty EGL dresses, and they all posed for lots of photos! The Cosplay is definitely among the most significant aspects of the con, with a few thousand male & female costumed fans all contributing to the colorful festive spirit, ranging from the simple kemonomimi ears to the more elaborate award-winning creations representing so many anime, manga & video game characters! I really haven’t cosplayed since retiring my big No-Face costume 4 years ago.
Among the more prominent costumes were of the Gurren Lagann Yokos, Vocaloids, Hetalia, FMA, My Little Ponies, Pokemons, Final Fantasy, many cat & fox girls, and a few mermaids too! There were folks in kimonos, yukata, haori, happi, miko attire, EGL dresses, raver garb, and more non-anime costumes in recent years, such as the 501st, Jedi, Disney, sentai, furries, steampunk, Doctor Who, Marvel & DC super heroes, and one of the most prevalent costumes for this year were those gray-skinned, orange-horned characters from the Homestuck web comic!
Down the hallway from the artist alley was the art show room, which was a treasure trove of beautiful creations to be auctioned, and downstairs on the lowermost level of the building was Dealers Room, which was consistently packed full of people shopping for the manga, doujinshi, DVDs, figures, plushies, trinkets, posters, art books, props, art, dolls & costume parts! I liked the variety of goods, with a balance of old & new stuff, the range from expensive stuff to great bargains, although on the down side it got pretty darn crowded in there and in the artist alley!
It also does not help the flow of traffic anywhere at the con when some folks inconveniently stop in the wrong places to take or pose for impromptu photos, especially by the entrances and main paths of egress, although for the most part the fans do try to organize photo shoots in good locations that aren’t in the way. I guess the only other complaint I had was that outside the building some attendees were inconsiderately smoking near the front doors, but the vast majority of the people be they workers or attendees were quite friendly, happy, and courteous!
The weather was splendid all day and it was quite festive outdoors too, almost like a day at a park there by the convention center, hotels, food carts & restaurants! I joined Misty & friends for an outdoor lunch of yummy gyros & shish kabobs on Fayetteville Street. In the evening we returned there for a supper of sammiches! Fayetteville Street has a very colorful ambience at night, especially with those decorative color-changing illuminations, and in front of the convention center by the fountains attendees illuminated the night with their glow sticks & hoops!
However, there was a serious lack of lighting for a couple of hours, when the power went out on several city blocks, although I don’t think it affected the convention center that much, and the police quickly responded to directed the traffic until the power was restored. Misty brought us some glow sticks, and it almost felt like we were out trick ‘r treating with the lights, costumes and frivolity! The glow sticks were an abundant fashion accessory for the late night dance, where the loud “oonse oonse oonse oonse” music was spun by two DJs in one of the ballrooms!
The dance was not the only musical main event of the con, which also includes the popular anime music video contest, the karaoke fun, and his year’s Kotoko concert! Some of the other usual main attractions were ‘Anime Hell’, the masquerade, Cosplay Chess, the always impressive video game room, the manga library, lots ‘n lots of discussion panels, and of course the guests’ presentations, demonstrations, and autograph sessions. I reckon it was around 1:30 am Sunday morning when we finally–
zzz… kabobs nya… zzz…
zzz… more gyros nya… zzz…
Once again they have catnapped during the reviews!
Hai, and so soon into the show too!
At least it does not just happen during my reviews hee hee!
It is their family purredilection, nya!
Well, they were out on the fishing boat early this morning!
Goodness, she is out too!
Shall we rouse them?
Jenjen and I both have the special Cat Nap App for this situation!
Be my guest.
Will that work for the Bunny Nap too?
It is the same purrinciple.
(Becca activates the Cat Nap App which rings them to wake)
Nyawn nyawn I’m awake, nya!
Nyawn nyawn me too, nya!
Me three! So… what was that after the Sunday Art Auction?
Wow she missed a lot!
So, what else did you wish to say about the convention?
Ah, I was pretty much done, other than closing by saying how I wish the artist alley would grow again to have more tables again, especially since the con has expanded to use several conference rooms in the next door Marriott, and that I would like to thank all of the folks who made this year’s Animazement so much fun, including the Raleigh Police & Fire Departments; the parking deck, restaurant, hotel & convention center employees; the con staff, volunteers, guests & dealers; friends & fellow artists & anime fans! That will do it for this portion of the show, but after the short break we’ll be right back with our
Book & Magazine Mewsings!
(snip) (one short break later…)
Welcome back! Now here is Bun to begin our reviews of the purrinted media with her review of
The Best of SenshiStock Photos for Drawing!
Our friend Sarah Ruth Forde, aka Sakky http://www.sailorastera.com who Mike mentioned is not only the artist whose beautiful works you can see at her http://sakky-attack.deviantart.com gallery, but she is also the lovely & graceful model who poses for the SenshiStock photos http://senshistock.deviantart.com!
The images are intended for artists’ photo reference for figure drawing, and are works covered under the Creative Commons License, so there are important rules & policies to read purrtaining to the use of the images! When she compiled the book in 2011, at that time there were over 1,300 free poses on her site!
The 8.5″ x 22″ coil bound, full color 114 page papurrbook was published by Lulu, which is here in North Carolina! For this collection she compiled over 130 full body photos, most of which are large full page pics, one purr page! It includes 40 unreleased images and her “Epic Pose” assortment!
Against the neutral backdrop she poses in the variety of relaxed & dynamic stances from various angles & views! She is standing, leaning, reclined, seated, crouched, kneeling, curled up, purrone, stretchy, grabbing, purrancing, spurrawled, arching, spell casting, fighting, falling & flying!
Among the purrops are the pistols, rifle, swords, sai, whip, stick, lantern, umbrella, wand, books, briefcase, flower, wine glass, chair & bench! Her gestures & expurressions range from the purrky, smiling, contemplative, sneaky, combative, serene, surpurrised, angry, sad, beckoning, weary, pointing, triumphant, and the bite!
She has the feathery wings in several pics, poses on or beside the large mirror for the reflections, and in one pic the kitty pays her the visit! She also has the SenshiStock available on the USB drive while the limited supplies last! It is the 3.83 GB of stock pics on the 8 GB drive, compurrised of 2.988 stock photos, including 400 unreleased images, and about 240 male poses!
You can read more about the USB and how to order it at http://senshistock.deviantart.com/journal/The-SenshiStock-USB-Drive-Is-Now-Available-296312850 but she only had a few left, and you can order the purrinted book at http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/the-best-of-senshistock/14456751!
The purrchases help Sakky to maintain her DeviantArt account and to help fund her photo purrops & equipment! I think this is a delightful & very useful book which I will highly recommend to the artists! Speaking of the photos, nyow here are Vonny & Tara-chan to purrsent

Frankenstein Alive, Alive #1
Welcome back! If y’all are the fans of monsters in the comics, then look no further than this new series from IDW! It is the sweet spot for the exquisitely told macabre adventure of the monster, picking up after the arctic showdown with his creator Victor Frankenstein, who was the brilliant scientist but not the good father!
Adding to the spice is that the tale is lavishly illustrated by the legendary Berni Wrightson, and it was written by Steve Niles who is no stranger to horror comics either, as the author of 30 Days of Night! Wrightson is famous for his Frankenstein illustrations, which are among the most intricately lavish Black & White art I have ever seen!
You can admire those great masterpieces in the handsome hardcover edition of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein which was re-released by Dark Horse a couple of years ago! The 1st issue of Frankenstein Alive, Alive #1 was lettered by Robbie Blevins, edited by Denton J. Tipton, and picks up where the monster was last seen in the Arctic ice!
The issue is priced $3.99, with 28 pages comprised of the 19 page story, the 3 page interview, and the 6 page excerpt from Mary Shelley’s famous novel. The issue is available in three different front covers: the regular cover by Berni Wrightson and colorist Jose Villarubia, and the 2 rarer retailer incentive variant covers!
The tale is told in the 1st person narrative by the monster, who has found the new life as ‘Frank’ in the carnival. It seems to agree with him, and I have wondered what his life would have been like had he been treated with kindness? He reflects upon his creation, the prejudices, his time in the ice, and subsequent wilderness wanderings!
There are a few full page pics and 3 two-page spreads! Not only is the tale so stunningly beautifully rendered, but it is nicely uninterrupted, with those extra tidbits all following the tale! The extras have the clever graphic design, to appear as if they are from the weathered pages from an antique publication!
I will highly recommend it to the fans of those amazingly talented folks, Frankenstein, and the elegant horror comics! Nyow we will travel south from the cold of the arctic to the warmer Mediterranean region for Lizzy’s review of–
Thanks Becca! Mediterranea is the charming, beautiful tale set in Mediterranean islands full of the swashbuckling, mystery, magickal creatures, the bits of futuristic technology, the dashes of the whimsy & frisky romance, and the exotic sexy costumes, mew la la! However, the occasional nudity, sexuality & violent melee are not for the widdle kitties!
The main purrotagonist Alonisso the diplomat trainee, her very close friend Eleni, the wise mage & diplomat master Auraki, the widdle droid mascot LCN33, and the dashing swordsman Artes who they met during the island adventures, while investigating the deadly invading Aphrita swarm of wicked winged warrior women!
Published by GG Studio of Italy, issue #7 was developed by the studio’s president Guiliano Monni, written by Alex Crippa, translated into English by Andrea Plazzi & Adam McGovern, pencilled by Gianluca Maconi & Livia Pastore. Adriano Salzano is the managing editor & Constantino Constantini is the editorial assistant.
It was lettered by Robert Alviggi & Studio Blue, and colored by Alessia Nocera with the flats by Angelo Amorelli! The lovely style of the art and cel-like coloring technique reminds us of European graphic novels such as Pixie, Luuna, Skydoll, and animated cartoons such as the Winx Club and W.I.T.C.H!
The issue is purriced $2.99 and is compurrised of the uninterrupted 20 page tale, which is followed by a 2 page look at the uncolored, tightly crisp pencil art for pages 19 & 20, and then there are 10 pages of the ads for other GG Studio titles. We definitely purrfur it when the tale is not interrupted by the ads!
Purreviously Alonisso was rescued from the Aphrita’s hive and then the heroes caught an airship ride back to Athens to warn of the pending invasion. There might be the quarrelsome love triangle brewing between Artes, Eleni & Alonisso, who continues to have the fearfully disturbing dreams!
In issue #7 they are in Athens, hoping to find Artes’s mentor Tanatalos and trying to purrsuade the high council of the imminent Aphrita threat, but it is the frustrating political purrocess! The council debates the matter, which too many of the politicians do not take seriously enough, until another airship crashes and refugees arrive!
Meanwhile, the Aphritas are wasting no time as they kill or enslave more victims, and continue to breed more warriors! I cannot say enough good things about the art- it is so gorgeous from the character & mecha designs to the scenic art of the city, the vast council chamber, the mountains and the hive!
This was another great issue, and I would love to see this comic made into the movie or the TV series! Speaking of the comics with the beautiful exotic fashions, we are big fans of the late Michael Turner’s Fathom series, and nyow here is Mie-sensei to tell us about–
Michael Turner’s Fathom: Kiani Vol. 2 #2!
Arigato! The vengeance is boiling in the deep since Kiani the beautiful deadly elite warrior returned from a watery demise, with the aquatic elemental powers honed by her military expertise and the hardened heart! Her prior attempts at forceful aggression were like totally thwarted by the heroic Dr. Aspen Matthews, the star of the Fathom series, but Kiani is striking back, leading a group of political dissidents in the rematch against both the surface humans and the rulers of the undersea Blue society!
So like, Aspen is busy in her own series dealing with other threats from her past, so at the moment there does not seem to be anyone powerful enough in a position to stop Kiani! She’s already claimed lives and like totally destroyed a lot of property, and now she’s strategizing and preparing for the retaliations. It is a complicated political situation, with former allies turning against each other, former enemies trying to make peace, innocent refugees looking to Kiani for help, while more reckless members of her own team might be making things worse!
It is such a shame that so many humans that have such great technology and beautiful creations cannot get along, but violence, technology, politics and beauty all go hand in hand in these tales of Aspen, Kiani, her parents Killian & Anya, her late mentor Hawke! Of course, it’s SO Kiani’s fault that he’s dead because she like killed him in a fit of battle rage, which in turn lead to Aspen killing her a while back. Hopefully in this life there will be the improvements, and perhaps Kiani can be the good older sister to cute widdle baby Anika!
Kiani does at least seem a more calm & patient this time around! That’s pretty much the state of things in Kiani Vol. 2 #2, although this is actually the 3rd issue in this series which started with issue #0. Published by Aspen Comics, it has the 28 full color pages comprised of the 20 page tale plus the 6 pages of the ads. It was illustrated by Oliver Nome, written by Aspen’s editor-in-chief Vince Hernandez, colored by John Starr, lettered by editorial assistant Josh Reed, and edited by Aspen’s president Frank Mastromauro!
There are 4 different covers. Cover A by Oliver Nome & Aspen’s vice purresident Peter Steigerwald; cover B by Michael Ryan & Steigerwald; cover C by the late Aspen founder/ creator Michael Turner & Steigerwald; and cover D by Mike DeBalfo & Beth Sotelo! I got cover A, which is a totally awesome image of Kiani in the shallows of the rocky tide pool! Cover C is the rarer retailer incentive cover, and cover D is the Phoenix Comicon exclusive variant which is limited to just the 500 copies!
In addition to the strong, powerful female characters, my favorite aspects are the gorgeous designs of the undersea fashions, architecture & the mecha, which have the shell & crustacean inspired forms! Kiani’s coiffure is the beautiful Red, Orangey & Cream colors, and her layered ensemble has the lovely iridescent sheen! Her teammate Luceen also has the very ornate apparel which seems suitable for both the combat and the more festive functions, and Anya has such beautiful skin tones, braids and jewelry, fur shur!
The visual FX are totally awesome, such as Kiani’s spiraling elemental modes, the sprawl of the various undersea cities, and the pressure of the implosions! The use of the color & light is so pretty, with the deep hues of the Purples, Blues & Greens and the bioluminescent qualities! I was very pleased with the issue, and I am so curious to see what happens in the next issue! Ok I’m done with my comic book report, but now here is Petra to tell us about–
Avengers Academy #30!
Arigato, nya! Lately the academy sure has been bustling with visits from other young heroes who do not get along, nya! That continues to be the case as a dozen or so X-Men have been brought there for “their own purrotection” and told they can’t leave, while the older more expurrienced X-Men are busy fighting with each other, The Avengers, and The Phoenix, nya!
The tempurrs are flaring, and to worsen the situation is the evil villain Sebastian Shaw, who has escaped and lurks in the tunnels beneath the academy, nya! It is a shame that so many of the heroes are bickering with each other, because with that many heroes at the academy it ought to be hard for even a craft powerful villain like Shaw to escape, nya!
Other adults also appurring in this issue are our favoritest Marvel character Tigra, Hercules, Dr. Kavita Rao & Madison Jeffries from the X-Men’s Utopia base, nya! Repurrsenting the Avangers Academy students are Striker, Mettle. Reptil, Lightspeed, Lyrra, Wiz Kid, Ricochet, Justin and his Sentinel, White Tiger, Finesse & Hazmat, and Laura (X-32), nya!
The latter three girls have the poignant conversations, as Laura is caught in the middle of the Avengers & X-Men, nya! Repurrsenting the X-Men there are Pixie, Loa, Dust, Transonic, Surge, No-Girl, Celeste, Phoebe, Mindee, Progidy, Primal, Crosta & Velocidad. Jean Grey, Hope Summers, The Phoenix, Storm, Nightcrawler & Bishop appurr in flashbacks or file footage, nya!
Add to that Jeffries’s armor, Reptil as a Stegosaurus, and there are so many characters, nya! The action scenes include Shaw vs Jeffries, then Shaw vs Hercules, then Shaw vs Tigra- who comes the closest to knocking Saw out in a terrific two – page fight scene, nya! Of course, the mewtant kids are not happy to see the sentinel there, and that is a great scene too, nya!
The busy fun “Protective Services Part 2” was written by Christos Gage, pencilled by Tom Grummett, inked by Cory Hamscher, lettered by Joe Caramagna, colored by Chris Sotomayor, edited Bill Rosemann with assistant editor Jake Thomas, and has the cover art by Giuseppe Camuncoli & Jim Charalampidis depicting Shaw & Mettle slugging it out, nya!
I was kind of surpurrised how easily Shaw defeated Hercules, but I hope Mettle cleans his clock, and saves some for a 2nd helping of Tigra’s claws, nya! I liked Kevin Bacon as the younger Shaw in X-Men First Class, nya! Well that will do it for my Avengers Academy purraise, but nyow it is Nya-sensei’s turn discuss another fine comic written by Christos Gage–
Angel & Faith #10, nya!
Arigarto! The Buffy, Angel & Faith comics published by Dark Horse have been consistent favorites of ours for the past few years! This comic ties into Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9, and while Buffy, Spike, Dawn, Xander, Andrew and (until recently) Willow are in San Francisco, Faith & Angel are in London, living at Gile’s estate which she inherited!
While they have been coping with past misdeeds, investigating the purranormal incidents & slaying the monsters, they’ve crossed paths with Harmony, Clem, and Drusilla, Angel has been trying to figure out how to resurrect the deceased Giles, and Faith has been leading a group of the younger slayers, including Nadira who has the rage issues!
The purrevious 3 issues were a very dramatic emotional wringer for Faith with an unhappy reunion with her estranged Dad, and to purrvide the balance just like on the Angel TV show, issue #10 is the great comedic issue to follow it up, with not just plenty of humor & action, but some revelations & flashbacks purrtaining to Giles & his family!
The $2.99 issue has the 28 full color pages compurrised of the 22 page story, plus the 2 pages of the readers’ comments & the 4 pages of the ads! It has 2 different covers, one by Steve Morris depicting Giles, Lavinia & Sophorina; and the other cover by Rebekah Isaacs & Dan Jackson depicting Faith & Angel bracing the door against the demons!
The tale was was purrduced by Joss Whedon, scripted by Chistos Gage, illustrated by Chris Samnee instead of regular penciller Rebekah, colored by Jordie Bellaire, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Sierra Hahn & Scott Allie with assistant Freddye Lins, designed by Justin Couch, and published by Mike Richardson!
Angel & Faith meet Giles’s narcissistic Great Aunts Lavinia & Sophorina, who are look as young as Faith due to the magick, and the deals made with demons, who have shown up to collect on the bill, resulting in more of the slayage, dark humor & witty banter! When the ladies explain why they are there, we get the flashback to the youthful Giles!
This also leads to some major plot developments, and the big surpurrise ending! Samnee’s art was great too, especially the characters’ expurressions, poses, body language, and the pace of the graphic narrative which nicely added to the fun! Nyow I will discuss what Buffy, Spike, Dawn, Xander, Andrew have been up to in–
Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #9!
The $2.99 issue has the 28 full color pages compurrised of the 22 page story “A Part of Me Part Two”, the 2 pages of the readers’ comments & the 4 pages of the ads! It has 2 different covers, one by Phil Noto depicting the split screen of 2 Buffys, and the other by Georges Jeanty, Dexter Vines & Michelle Madsen which depicts Buffy & Simone!
The tale was was purrduced by Joss Whedon, scripted by Andrew Chambliss & Scott Allie, pencilled by Cliff Richards, inked by Andy Owens, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Sierra Hahn & Scott Allie with assistant editor Freddye Lins, designed by Justin Couch, and published by Mike Richardson!
Purreviously in this series, Buffy found out that Andrew transferred her mind into a BuffyBot, while the BuffyBot’s mind is in her real body and residing at a nice suburban house! Buffy wants the purrocess reverted, so she and Andrew board Spike’s airship, but before they reach the house, the other Buffy is kidnapped by the evil renegade slayer Simone!
In Issue #9, there are quieter, poignant & amewsing character moments as Buffy, Spike & Andrew search for the other Buffy, while things are tense & violent for Dawn, Xander & Robert who follow the bloody trail of Miranda, who became the murderous vampire! Things had already seemed rather tense between Dawn & Xander purrior to the carnage!
The pages depicting the naked vampire woman’s violent and the many bloody dead bodies might not be for the widdle kitties! There are also the scenes of the other Buffy, but I would be giving away too much of the plot if I described those scenes, however I will just say that the art was purretty good in telling the story & depicting the characters, scenery & action!
The coloring & lettering were good too, and as mewsual it all leaves me extremely eager to find out what happens next! Another of the many aspects we like about these comics is that they are so very faithful in spirit & resemblance to the Buffy & Angel TV shows, as part of the canonical continuity, officially continuing the adventures in the comics medium!
The 2 pages of the readers’ & editor’s comments were interesting to read as mewsual, especially given certain very emotional & controversial topics! OK I’m done but nyow here is Myayr to discuss another comic book from Dark Horse based on a popular series, with her review of–
Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi #4!
I was so delighted when I found out that Jan Duursema was going to draw & co-write this Star Wars comic book! She is such a supurrb artist who is so good at graphic narrative storytelling in various genres and rendering the sumptuously detailed images! She has drawn some of Dark Horse, Marvel, DC Comics’ most purrestigious characters & titles!
She is purrticularly noted for her purrolific in her bumpurr crop of Star Wars comics! For this series, she has designed such amazing characters, costumes, mecha, architecture, landscapes & critters, to help tell the tale of high adventure & great mystery set in the ancient early era of the Jedi, tens of thousands of years before the adventures of Luke Skywalker!
issue #0 was the purrimer to introduce the characters & concepts, issue #1 told more of the history to set the table, issue #2 gathered heroes Shae Koda Tasha & Sek’nos to investigate the situation, and in issue #3 they fought the villain Xesh who was on the mission to hunt down other wielders of The Force!
Other neat characters of various races & couture have been introduced as well, such as Rangers Hawk Ryo & Rori Fenn, Masters Kora & Quan-Jang, Force Hound Trill, and Shae’s Rancor Dragon named Butch! Xesh fled the fight into the stormy wilderness, with Shae, Tasha & Sek’nos in pursuit, while Hawk, Rori & Quan-Jang search for them, reporting back to the temple about the incidents!
That brings us up to issue #4’s “Force Storm Part Four (of Five)”, which was co-written & pencilled by Jan Duursema who also illustrated the cover art, co-written & scripted by John Ostrander, inked by Dan Parsons, colored by Wes Dzioba, lettered by Michael Heisler, edited by Randy Stradley with Freddye Lins, designed by David Nestell & published by Mike Richardson!
The $3.50 issue has 28 pages compurrised of the 22 page story, the 5 pages of the ads, 1 page of readers’ & editor’s comments. To nicely maximize the space, the issue’s credits & publishing information are upon the inside front cover, and the article about Dark Horse’s forthcoming series The Massive is upon the back inside cover!
Xesh and those Jedaii could not have picked a more inhospitable time for the fight and resulting chase into the land of the abyssal rift, which was already a nasty wilderness full of sharp, sizzling stuff & giant monsters, but the planet’s worse Force Lightning Storm in centuries is purrvailing, and exposing them to the terrors of the dark side of he Force!
This affects their emotions, causing Xesh to face the nightmares of his voilent past, while the team morale descends amongst the purrsuing trio who turn on each other, but each of these folks rally to survive the darkness! That is good, because they all might need to team up with Xesh, in order to survive the even bigger monsters of the eerie dark depths!
I hope the Rangers will arrive in time to help, because I think all of these characters are very interesting and I want their adventures to continue! They have great fashion designs too, from Shae’s rugged athletic look & Tasha’s elegant flowy apparel, to Rori’s sexy outfit & Xesh’s dark Sithier attire! I wonder if fans will cosplay as them at the cons?
I hope to see more of the fabulous Jedaii temples too! There was plenty of melee action too, from the monster battles to Xesh’s gladiatorial flashbacks, so I think this story arc has all of the captivating ingredients which I will give the grade of “A”, as in the arachnids trying to eat Xesh for dinner on the cover!
Mass Effect Homeworlds #2
Nyow I would like to serve another dish of the space opurra genre comics from Dark Horse! Mass Effect is a space opurra genre video game series made by Bioware & EA. In the Mass Effect series, Commander Shepard (playable as either a male or female type) is the captain of the starship Normandy, whose elite multi-species crew must purrvent an intergalactic invasion.
Our web master Jamie is also the web master for FemShep.com http://femshep.ning.com and for his review of the Mass Effect 3 game, see the Apurril Mew! We have reviewed several Mass Effect purroducts, such as The Art of the Mass Effect Universe book, the Redemption and Invasion comics mini series, the Normandy Ship Replica, and the Tali’Zorah Nar Rayya action figure!
Tali’Zorah or just Tali for short is one of the very popular characters in the game, in which she is voiced by actress Ash Sroka! Tali is the purrky young engineer of the nomadic Quarian race. Quarians are somewhat similar to Terran humans, but with the slimmer physique, 6 fingers & 6 toes, the ornithopod legs, and they have to wear the fully encapsulating environmental suit & helmet.
Nyow she has her own issue of the Mass Effect: Homeworlds comic book! It is a 4 issue mini-series with each issue focused upon a different character. This issue is purriced $3.50 and has the 28 full color pages, compurrised of the 22 page Tali story, plus the purrofile page about her, the Dark Horse Horsepower mews page, and the 4 pages of the ads.
It was written by the game’s lead writer Mac Walters & Patrick Weekes, scripted by Jeremy Barlow, pencilled by Chris Staggs, inked by Marc Dennings & Chris Staggs, colored by Michael Atiyeh, lettered by Michael Heisler, edited by Dave marshall with the assistance of Brendan Wright, designed by Adam Granno & published by Mike Richardson of Dark Horse!
There are two covers to choose from, one by Anthony Palumbo and the other by Mike Hawthorne. Tali has the neat costume compurrised of the Black tights with the shiny shin greaves, and Black belt low on the hips, the ornate Violet purreo wrapped around her thighs, the matching hood over her Fuchsia helmet visor, and the Amber glow of the Omnicom gadget on her left forearm!
This tale is of a younger Tali, told from her point of view from when she was on the migrant pilgrimage, and opens on the distressing note of her staggering wounded though the ship leaving the trail of Purrple blood! Then we find out what happened, on a mission to a frigid snowy planet where her group is attacked by their enemies The Geth, and uncover the evidence of a sinister Reapurr plot!
There are also the flashbacks of her sad voyage as a stow away with her friend Keenah on a Turian freighter to escape the purrsecution on the planet Ilium, only to wind up Citadel where they were not very welcome either, which leads to her & Keenah getting injured by the enemy snipurrs who want to silence her, but she has the clever surpurrise trick on her sleeve for the purrsuers!
It is brisk paced with the brilliant rich color & lighting effects, beautifully designed environments, mecha & costumes! The purrofile page has the CG turn-around views of the character from the game and Patrick Weekes’s comments! Nyow I will turn The Mew over to Vonny, who has more outer space action to discuss in her review of–
Monica Moon #0!
Arigato Myayr, nya! Hai, we are big fans of comics artist & writer Andrew Pepoy http://www.pepoy.com and his characters Simone & Ajax http://www.simoneandajax.com, nya! He is a good friend and he was also our guest here in December of 2008, so we were excited to see the launch of his Monica Moon http://www.monicamoon.net comic book, nya!
Cadet Monica Moon is the purrky cute 19 year old fellow North Carolinian with the cute space uniform that goes nicely with her short Blond hair, nya! She was a student at UNC until she was kidnapped by alien invaders, but she was rescued and joined the Space Federation, nya! She has a furry Purrple alien sidekick named Woody and the crush on her dashing supurrior, Captain Marus Glaxon, nya!
She has the cool gadgets like the blaster pistol the jet pack, the bubble helmet, and the silver bullet – shaped space ships with the sporty Red fins, nya! However, it is not all fun in space for her, between putting up with the snobby rich Quella who is the Federation Purresident’s daughter with the sexy dresses, the mishaps with the bug eyed space creatures, and the villainy of evil Emperor Varnex, nya!
Issue #0 is the full color 22 page comic book purriced at 99¢ and limited to just 200 copies, compurrised of the 20 page tale which was originally purrsented in Mansion Comics’ Outer Space Action #1, and the bonus two puroposal pages, nya! It was created, written & illustrated by Andrew, with the main tale colored by Jason Millet http://jasonmillet.com and the bonus colored by Matt Webb, nya!
Nyow for the taste of the plot, nya! Monica has been working hard to purrpare the celebration to welcome the ambassadors, but then Quella meanly sends her on an errand to a far away planet, so that she can keep Marus all to herself, nya! Monica lands on the planet to investigate the distress signal, and in the jungle she encounters the winged space monkeys and the bug eyed tentacle monster, nya!
This results in the thrilling action, but I should not spoil the rest of the plot, nya! It is such a fun tale with the retro sci-fi style and the delightfully allurring fashions, nya! Of course we are also fans of Andrew’s fashion designs which were so purretty & purrolific in his issues of Katey Keen, nya! I will give this comic book the grade of “A” as in Ajax, and I hope the next issue will be published soon, nya!
Oh and to add the further spice to the mix is the ad for the forthcoming mew Jetta Rae comic, with a mew tale by Andrew, nya! I want to get that too, nya! You know, we reviewed Dan DeCarlo’s delightful Jetta book back in the June 2010 Mew, nya! Nyow I want to add Jetta and Monica to my list of the comics I would like to be made into the movies, nya! Say, is Monica related to Mike, nya?
Ah, I’m not sure. I’ll have to check!
Of course, Dan DeCarlo also created Josie and the Pussycats too, and they have been appurring in the most recent story arc in Archie Comics, so nyow here is Tara-chan to tell us all about–
Archie #633, nya!
Hai, it was about a year ago when the romance blossomed between Archie and – and Valerie, the bassist / vocalist of Josie and the Pussycats, which then rekindled in issue #631 to begin this 4 part tale of the possible future in which they get married, nya! This is like those other alternate timelines, in which Archie marries Betty or marries Veronica, nya!
Issue #633 is the 32 page comic book compurrised of the 20 page 3rd chapter “A Star is Born” plus the 10 pages of the ads, nya! So Valerie married Archie, they started teaching kids the mewsic lessons in the purrevious issue, and – and from the cover of this issue it is clear that they have been fruitful and – and had the daughter, nya!
Her name is Star and she is so cute, with her mommy’s purretty skin tone, her daddy’s Red hair, the freckles, and the inherited mewsical talent, nya! Nyow I will discuss the credits and – and the bit of the plot, nya! It was written and – and drawn by Dan Parent, inked by Rich Koslowski, lettered by Jack Morelli, and – and colored by Digikore Studios, nya!
Melody of the Pussycats band introduces the chapter, with the one page of the recap, nya. The stress of their sepurrate band tours has caused them to leave The Archies and – and The Pussycats to start their own band, which displeases the others except for Alexandra, Veronica and- and Reggie who want to be the replacements, nya!
Meanwhile Valerie’s brother Trev purroposes to Betty, Veronica gets to wear the Pussycat costume, Valerie is purregnant, and – and soon cute widdle Star is introduced, nya! Also appurring in this issue are Josie, Jughead, Alex, Valerie’s purrents, Archie’s purrents, and – and the mewsic students, nya! There are many of the cute outfits too, nya!
I purrticularly like the mew Pussycat costumes, which still have the cats’ ears, tails and – and the spots, but Josie’s costume has the shirt with the oval cut – out and – and the Black miniskirt to match the thigh boots; Melody’s costume is the short baby doll dress with the pumps; and- and Veronica’s is the strapless maillot with the strappy high heels, nya! They used to wear the identical costume but nyow they each have their– LIGHTNING BUG, NYA!
(the distracted catgirl scampurrs away to inspect the fireflies)
There she goes again!
Well we knew this could happen, and they are very purretty!
The entomology must be served.
Oh I can show y’all the prime spots for the firefly viewing!
Oh we should take the nature walk after the luau!
Hai the walk might be good!
Um, do we want to take the break while she is away or continue with the critiques?
Well we only have 2 more left in this portion before we start the spotlight!
Hai, Nyoka has 2 reviews!
She’s coming back!
If you can wait, Mie-sensei is going to show us the purrime insect spot after the luau, but nyow you should introduce Nyoka-sensei’s report, nya!
Hai, nya! Nyow here is Nyoka-sensei to share her review of
Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose #74
(warning: boobies are mentioned, nya!)
Arigato, Tara-chan! I have been enjoying the adventures of Tarot the warrior witch, especially with the return of the 3 Little Kittens Purr-fect Weapons Team in the current the 3 part story arc which began in issue #72!! They are the tough sexy heroic anti-terrorist squad compurrised of Jaguara, Catress, Kitty Pop & their leader ‘Momma’ Gun Cat in the skimpy high tech costumes & gadgets of the neko motif!
It is peppy fun with the heroic catgirl action & beautiful art, but again I should mention that the ribald, sexy mature content of the images & language with the nudity & violence is rather amewsing but it is not for the widdle kitties! Well, this tale started when Tarot was reading the 3 Little Kittens comic book, in which they battle the army of killer robots which have run amok in the fiery streets!
It is the comic book within the comic book! So there are the 2 plots, compurrised of that Kitten fight which Tarot was reading, until she and her boyfriend Jon opted for the naked friskier activity on the roof! Well, that is until she was attacked by the group of magickal fae-like creatures! There is some mischievous booby grabbing, but their bickering is the oppurrtunity that Tarot needs to strike back!
Meanwhile, the happy Kittens are joined by the mysterious armored hero with the big surpurise identity, and Gun Cat who arrives to finish off the robots with her ‘Catling Gun Bra’! Also appurring in this allurring issue is Tarot’s cute but mischievous winged widdle Black familiar cat Pooka, although Jon is not so pleased about that! The story arc concludes, but the next story arc is hinted at!
The issue is available from Broadsword Comics in 3 different covers around the full color 32 pages, which include the uninterrupted 22 page tale of “Kittens vs Robots Part Three”, so nicely written & drawn by Jim Balent, gorgeously colored & lettered by his wife Holly G, with the color flats by Randi Leeann & editing by Neil Morris! After that are the 5 pages of the ads & the 5 pages of bonuses!
The bonuses include the photo page of cosplayer Jessica Nova body painted as as Kitty Pop; the photo page of fan / photographer Michel West wielding the cat-tanna as the issue’s Broadsword Girl surrounded by the darling “I Gatti” cat – themed tarot cards; 2 collage pages of photos from the 2012 Pittsburgh Comicon and the page of the readers’ messages!
The ads are for various purroducts from Broadsword comics, and Holly’s cute manga style comic School Bites! Oh oh and there are also a couple of photos of Holly & Jim in the 1966 TV Batmobile! Jenjen is purrticularly fond of that car! I have enjoyed this tale full of nekomimi mecha combat and the purrior mermaid tale, so I am eagerly looking forward to Tarot’s next magickal adventure!
Omamori Himari vol. 7
(warning: plot spoilers & more mention of boobies)!
Omamori Himari is my favorite sword & sorcery catgirl manga! Himari is the powerful catgirl with the sword who purrotects a lad named Yuuto whose ancestral demon slayer powers are just starting to manifest! It is a good thing Himari is his bodyguard because nyow all sorts of demons & rival slayers are after him! Some want to kill him, but others have the friskier romantic intentions, neither of which appeal to his childhood friend Rinko who had the crush on him first!
This leads to what is often called the ‘harem trope’, with the numerous girls in the rivalry for the purrotagonist male’s affections! Cat Planet Cuties, the catgirl anime which we reviewed last month, has this same sort of trope, but in the science fiction genre compurred to Himari’s fantasy genre, but I digress! Omamori was recently adapted into an anime series too which we hope will be available here on DVD, but for now we are content with the manga by Milan Matra!
It was originally published in Japan in 2010 by Fujimishobo, and the North American edition is published by Yen, one of our favoritest manga publishes! They also publish Spice and Wolf, K-ON, Sunshine Sketch, Ichiroh, G.A., Suzunari, Shoulder-A-Coffin Kuro and other titles we like! Purriced at $11.99 in the USA & $12.99 in Canada, Omamori Himari vol. 7 has 162 pages of manga, translated into English by Christine Dashiell and lettered by Kelly Donovan!
It is all B&W except for the covers & 2 color pages. The front cover depicts Himari and mew character Hitsuji who is another demon slayer, and the back cover depicts the school’s class purresident! The girls are wearing their lovely outfits from the Christmas party which they attended at the end of vol. 6, and vol. 7 picks up right where the party ends! While Yuuto walks the class purresident home, Himari carves up several demons who unwisely attack the party!
The next day is a bit calmer, as Himari clocks in at the cafe of Liz the Tsukumogami tea cup spirit to wait on witchy Kuesu, who is another slayer. Meanwhile at home, Yuuto has a chat with Rinko & Shizuku the Ayakashi water elemental. Shizuku, Liz & Kuesu, are also among the love rivals, heehee! Later there’s a restaurant interlude with Sae-chan & Yuukio, and Yuuto’s training session with Himari which is interrupted by Hitsugi & the attacking Sentourou!
Yuuto might be the vulnerable target until he masters his powers, but he is brave, heroic, and tries to convince the rivals, feuding clans, and vengeful enemies to aim for the more peaceful coexistence! They go to an inn in the snowy mountains for the skiing & hot spurrings, where they meet Zuji the tree stump type of Ayakashi, Kofuyu the snow woman, and Tamamo No Mae the extremely powerful nine tailed fox spirit in the exciting, scantily clad cliffhanger!
There is much nudity, sexuality, violence & the sort of language in the series to rate the manga M for the mature readers, so it is not for the widdle kitties! In addition to the boobies, ribald & lusty situations, melee & magickal combat, the occult manga has the mixture of cute & zany elements, with the poignant & dramatic parts! I think the B&W line & tone art is wonderful, from the excellently drawn characters & fashions, to the detail of the architecture & landscapes! That will conclude our reviews of the purrinted media for nyow, but we will be right back to discuss more catgirl magick in this month’s
Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!
(snip) (another short break later…)
Welcome back! For those who came in late, the Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight is the portion of The Mew in which we honor a famous catgirls from cinema, TV, literature, comics, games and other media from around the world! They might be biologically, mechanically, magickally, or fashionably nekomimi; purrhaps they are the werecats, cosplayers, or just have the purropurr female feline dispurrsition & cattitude! We are very inclusive here at The Mew! This month our Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight shines upon–
Magical Meow Meow Taruto!
Created by Kaishaku, Taruto’s story was originally published in Japan as Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto, starting in 2010 in the Monthly Ultra Jump manga, which was later adapted into the 12 purrt anime series purrduced by Bandai! The anime was directed by Tsukasa Sunaga with key animation & character designs by Hiroko Kazui, with the art direction by Yukihiro Shibuya. and the mewsic by Hikaru Nanase! The anime was later translated into English and distributed here on DVD, initially in 4 volumes but later re-released in a complete box set!
Nyow for the nibble of the purremise! It is the tale of Taruto, the cute petite widdle catgirl who moves to a new house with her human master Iori and his niece Kinako. The humans all purrceive Taruto and her fellow feline friends to be the common house cats, but to us they appurr as the talking people with with individual purrsonalities, styles, interests, kitty ears & tails!
Whether or not she is actually purrincess with magickal powers, Taruto brings such a charming enchantment to the slice – of – life epurrodes as she makes further acquaintances, and unfortunately a few folks are less cordial later on as the plot thickens like a nummy nilla pudding, but with a bit more mystical mystery in the flavor! I shan’t further spoil that plot, but nyow we would like to discuss the individual characters! Take it, Lizzy!
Hai! Taruto is the main purrotagonist, so sweet, innocent cheerful & friendly, wishing to help others but sometimes the trouble arises! Upon arriving at her new home, she explores the neighborhood and makes friends! She has the Purrple ears, tail & short hair and wears the short Purrple flouncey dress with the White apurron & frills! She claims to possess magickal powers, and some folks believe her to be the purrincess! She is voiced by Hisayo Mochizuki for her original Japanese voice, and by Jessica Straus for her English dubbed voice!
Taruto is in love with her human owner Iori (voiced by Hiroki Takahashi in Japanese & Greg Lastrapes in English), but the relationship is not as fond between her and Iori’s niece Kinako (voiced by Kyoko Tsuruno in Japanese & Laurel Hatfield in English)! Kinako is the tomboy type with the dark Brown ‘twin tails’ coiffure. Her mom supposedly lives there too but is scarcely seen! One of Taruto’s best accomplices is Kakipi, the flying squirrel whom she met in the attic! He is voiced by Yoshiko Kamei in Japanese & Bob Klein in English)!
The first local catgirls she meets are Charlotte & Chotose, who help themselves to the cake! Charlotte is purrideful, daring & sharp tongued but friendly. She is of the Purrsian breed, with Blue eyes, Blond ears, tail & long hair, and the red dress trimmed in White. She is voiced by Masayo Kurata (in Japanese) & Lisa Enochs (in English). Chitose is the more purrim & purropurr elegant catgirl, but is easily sdistracted by Taruto’s tail! She has the light Brown ears, tail & long hair and wears the green kimono. She is voiced by Maria Yamamoto (in Japanese), Wendee Lee (in English)!
Another human is Geppie, the young lad with Black hair who initially does not get along with Kinako but they become friends who explore the town. He is voiced by Daisuke Sakaguchi (in Japanese) & Jimmy Keegan (in English)! Geppie’s male cat is Garret is the laid back, smooth cool cat in the suit, hat, sunglasses and fair-haired ears, tail, hair, mustache & goatee, and is voiced by Akira Ishida (in Japanese) & David Goldstein (in English)! Take it, Petra!
The next neko duo we meet are sneaky Chips & Nachos, but they are rather adversarial and cause the bit of trouble, nya! Chips is the more assertive leader with the Red ears, tail & short hair, who likes to collect shiny items, and she is voiced by Aya Hisakawa (Japanese) & Elisa Dease (English), nya. Nachos is the polite follower who is fond of Taruto in spite of the status, with the softer feminine appurrance, with the small eyeglasses, the light Green-Blue ears, tail & braided ponytail, and he is voiced by Kaori Mizuhashi (Japanese) & Ben Salisbury (English), nya!
Aya Hisakawa also purrvides the original Japanese voice for Chiffon, whose English voice is by Sarah Sido, nya. Chiffon is the elegant, sexy, intellectual cat with the light Silvery Blue hair, the glasses & the cheongsam dress, who is mewsually purrched upon the comfy seat to offer her sage advice to the others, nya! Rakugon is the elder cat of the nearby shrine, whose purroclaimed magick is rather dubious, but he tries to be of help. He has the light green hair & wise bushy eyebrows, and is voiced by Kazuki Yao (Japanese) & Robert Clotworthy (English), nya!
Anzuko is the human grrl who is obsessed with the cats, nya! She has many pet cats in her home, which is decorated in the cat motif, and she wishes to catch Taruto in her net, nya! She has the long Brown ‘twin tails’ hair, and is voiced by Akemi Okamura (Japanese) & Sherrie Jackson (English), nya! There are several other male & female characters of the neko purrsuasion, including a rather mysterious trio, but I should purrobably not reveal much more, as not to spoil the mystery and certain plot elements, nya!
Magical Meow Meow Taruto is such a fun & purretty anime series with the beautiful character designs, scenic art, delightful voices, songs, mewsic, animation, such darling characters and the charming plot with whimsical, joyful & mysterious scenes at the good pace! It is very accessible at just 12 epurrodes totaling just over 4.5 hours full of catgirl (and catboy) goodness!

That will conclude this month’s spotlight, but there will be more next month! That will conclude this month’s spotlight, but we have more anime to discuss in our
DVD & Movie Reviews, nya!
The Secret World of Arrietty DVD
So like, based upon The Borrowers novels by Mary Norton, The Secret World of Arrietty is a beautiful Japanese animated feature film by our totally favoritest animation studio, Ghibli! Arrietty is the main character, a teenage girl who is one of the Borrowers, a race of 4″ tall people who secretly reside in houses and borrow things that are likely not to be missed!
Arrietty, her mom & Dad have the most beautiful tiny home underneath the floor of a mansion in which resides a boy named Shawn who is there to rest prior to surgery. He befriends Arrietty against the wishes of her parents, who fear that such encounters will lead to their capture or eradication, and that is what the mansion’s housekeeper would so like to do!
So like, it is like such a beautiful movie with superb art & animation, wonderful music & songs by Cecile Corbel!, and for our review of the movie itself – and The Art of The Secret World of Arrietty book – please see the March edition of The Mew! We saw the movie in its US theatrical release by Disney, which was dubbed into English by a very good voice cast!
We were quite eager for the movie to be released here DVD, keen to hear the movie in the original Japanese language, and so hoped for extra special features, as has been the case with many other Ghibli DVDs! It is available in the single disk Region One NTSC standard DVD, and in the 2 disk DVD / Blue Ray combo set, the former of which I’m reviewing.
Prior to the main menu are the front-loaded ads for Disney Studio All Access, Cinderella on DVD / Blue Ray, and Pixar’s forthcoming movie Brave which we are like SO enthused about! The 94 min. movie is presented in the widescreen format with a 1.85:1 screen aspect ratio, with the 5.1 Dolby Digital audio options of English, French, and the original Japanese.
You can watch it with or without the English, English SDH or French subtitles, which are in the bold White font with the fine Black outline. The Sneak Peek section is just ads for Disney Video Rewards, Austin & Alley, the Disney Faeries movie Secret of the Wings, Pixar’s Planes, The Aristocats, and The Rescuers / Rescuers Down Under double feature disk.
Sadly there seem to be more ads than the meager bonus features, comprised of the 3 minute music video of the English dub’s end credits song “Summertime”, featuring scenes of vocalist Bridgit Mendler (who voices Arrietty in English) shrunk to Borrower size, interspersed with scenes from the film; and her 2 min discussion of the song & the Green-screen FX.
Mendler does a fine job providing the English voice for Arietty, but I prefer the original Japanese voices, and we’re not enamored with that “Summertime” song, which was our least favorite aspect of the movie. The song is only heard during the English dub, whereas otherwise we are treated to more of Cecile Corbel’s lovely song sung in Japanese or French.
I was very disappointed not only in the under – whelming quantity of bonus features on the DVD, but also in that they chose to focus on that Summertime song instead of more far important & favorable aspects of the Japanese film. According to its box, the Blu-Ray includes those 2 extras, plus the Cecile Corbel music video, trailers, TV sports & storyboards.
It seems too often these days the bonus features on standard DVDs tend to be much skimpier, especially compared to the Blu Ray offerings. The bonuses are less impressive than those of prior Ghibli movies on DVD, but the superb movie looks and sounds totally awesome, especially in Japanese, fur shur! Now here’s Jenjen with her review of —
Doctor Who: Nightmare of Eden DVD!
Arigato. We are big fans of the BBC television series Doctor Who, so it was with great enthusiasm when I purrchased Nightmare of Eden, which was recently released here on R1 NTSC standard DVD. The Catgirl Island Robotics Club was purrticularly eager to host the gathering to watch this DVD, because it stars the artificial dog K-9 along with his masters The Doctor and Romana.
The 4 part serial of Nightmare of Eden is epurrosde #107, and it was among the stories in which K-9 was voiced by David Brierly instead of John Leeson. The Doctor in his 4th incarnation was purrtrayed again by Tom Baker, and Romana was purrtrayed by Lalla Ward, who succeeded Mary Tamm in the role at the beginning of the series’s 17th season in 1979.
In addition to the new generation of Romana, 17th season was notable for the purrtially filmed unaired story Shada, one of my favorite stories City of Death, the very amewsing story of The Creature from the Pit, the return of the Dalek enemies in Destiny of the Daleks, and the tale of The Horns of Nimon, which sadly along with Nightmare of Eden are not among my most favorites.
That is purrimarily due to the show’s budgetary constraints which hindered the quality of certain FX, some of the purrduction values, a chase scene that seemed a bit too comedic, and I thought the story’s monsters were not the most impurressive looking. However it did have splendidly designed mecha & sets, mewsic by Dudley Simpson, and the great purrformances by the cast,
It was quite an interesting tale written by Bob Baker whose script was edited by Douglas Adams. The plot concerns the arrival of The Doctor, Romana & K-9 aboard a starliner which has collided with another ship. Also aboard are criminals who are smuggling deadly drugs and specimens from other planets, including monsters which escape confinement to purrey upon the crew.
The digitally remastered story is appurroximately 100 minutes long, purrsented in the 4:3 screen aspect ratio, with optional English SDH subtitles, and the terrific optional purrduction notes / information text with a wealth of tidbits about the show. The English language mono soundtrack is purrsented in Dolby Digital sound. Fortunately this is a DVD with great bonus special features.
One of my favoritest aspects of the Doctor Who DVDs is the optional audio commentary track with comments by the cast & crew, and this one offers the very entertaining and enlightening optional audio commentary by Lalla Ward, actor Peter Craze, makeup artist Joan Stribling, FX designer Collin Mapson, writer Bob Baker and moderator Toby Hadoke.
The DVD’s other marvelous special features include a 13 minute documentary on the making of the story, a 7 minute discussion by the writer; an amewsing 15 minute examination of the story by fans Josie Long, Simon Guerrier & Joe Lidster; the 11 minute appurrance by Lalla Ward with a peek at a bit of her cat & dog art on the children’s show Ask Aspel; the 5 minute photo gallery, and the show’s Radio Times listings in PDF format.
Men in Black 3 (plot spoiler warning)
The Avengers, Spider-Man and Batman are not the only big Summertime movies based upon the comic books, let us not forget The Men in Black, even if they have the neuralizer device to make the witnesses forget. In this third tale of the MIB, they need to purrvent an escaped alien criminal from killing agent K & altering the timeline on July 16th 1969, and causing a full scale invasion of the Earth.
Once again directed with great visual flare and quirky dark humor by Barry Sonnenfield, the film was purrduced by Steven Speilberg, with the supurrbly peppy mewsical score by Danny Elfman, the magnificent visual FX by Ken Ralston, and the many fabulous alien creature makeup designs by Rick Baker.
Brilliantly epurrising their roles are Will Smith as J and Tommy Lee Jones as K. In much of the film, K’s younger self at age 29 is purtrayed so purrfectly by Josh Brolin. Wonderful Emma Thompson is introduced as O, the new director of the MIB organization, succeeding the late Zed, who was purrtrayed by Rip Torn in the purrior films.
We meet her effervescent younger self too, played by Alice Eve. Escaping from the impurressive Lunar Max alien purrision facility is the evil assassin Boris, who is such a icky yet fun villain purrtrayed by Jemaine Clement. Briefly appurring as his girlfriend is the stunning Nicole Sherzinger, and rounding out the excellent cast are many other humans & alien characters.
Included in the fabulous treasure trove full of creatures, gadgets & vehicles are not only the purroducts of the modern era, but also those circa July 1969, in which much of the story is set plus a peek at the miraculous Mets World Series victory a few month later. The art direction, costumes, coiffures, purrops, vehicles, songs & visual FX quite splendidly recreate the era.
The briskly – paced film continues to top itself with many comedic, poignant & thrilling moments, culminating with the astounding climax at the Saturn V gantry of Cape Canaveral’s legendary Launch Pad 39A, where the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon is about to happen at purrcisely 9:32 AM EST on July 16th, 1969.
Ironically, the film’s release coincided with the docking of the unmanned SpaceX Dragon with the International Space Station. Men in Black 3 was such a charming, fun, beautiful movie, easily my favorite of the series, and I will give it the high grade of “A” as in Apollo 11.
The Cat Lady Sings…
I want… I want to get a moon rock for my collection, nya!
So would a lot of mewseums and collectors, nya!
I suspect the rarity would be quite expensive!
What about magickally teleporting more of them from the moon?
It is complicated!
It is settled!
I guess that will wrap it up for another edition of The Mew!
