Oh we were supposed to discuss the Island’s

Summer Art, Literature And Mewsic Inspurration Purroject (SALAMI)

Petra:

The Catgirl Island Island Summer Art & Literature Appurreciation Purroject started as a little tradition of the The Mew, in which each of us would make a point to explore mew books, comix & art, nya! The later spin was that each purrticipant would place an admired name in the pot for another purrticipant to randomly draw, while we enjoyed the Crab Hot Pot Suppurr, nya! This caught on with the rest of Catgirl Island, and became an event organized betwixt the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art and the Public Library, nya!

This year the Purrforming Arts Center joined in on the purrmotion, and the event expanded to include different ages and the purrforming arts cattygories, nya! Thusly it was re-named the Summer Art, Literature And Mewsic Inspurration Purroject, or just SALAMI for short, nya! Each of us submitted the papurr slips bearing suggested authors, visual & purrforming artists to appurreciate, made the random drawings at last night’s our Mew Crab Meat Meet, and nyow we will reveal whose names we drew from the pot, nya!

Nyanko:

It was the tasty crab!

Yvonne:

Hai it was the fresh Blue crab from the cape, nya!

Trini-chan:

Tara-chan:

Onee-chan, this is making me hungry again, nya!

Well we have to wait until the break, although the salami sammich would be good, nya!

Lizzy:

Speaking of the entertaining & inspurrational artists & authors, in late June there was the huge annual gathering of many greats on the mainland in Charlotte, and nyow here is Mike to start our

Convention Reports

with his report on Heroes Con 2012!

Mike:

Thanks Lizzy! Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC is the biggest and one of the most fun conventions in North Carolina! I’ve been going there since the early 80’s with friends from the Carolina Comic Book Club  and we were especially looking forward to this year’s 30th Anniversary Con! It has been wonderfully run by Shelton Drum, the owner of the comic book store Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find, and it seemed like this year had the biggest crowd ever, and as usual there was such a happy spirit over the festive event!

I am not sure how many thousands of fell fans of all ages & genders were there to meet over 315 guest artists, writers & editors, plus approximately 150 more in the artist alley, 5 podcasters, various organizations and about 100 dealers selling comics from the 1930’s to the present, books, cards, figures, statues, plushies, props, shirts, jewelry, costume accessories, original art, art supplies, DVDs, anime goods, movie posters & memorabilia For a complete list off all the guests & exhibitors, please see the Heroes Con site http://www.heroesonline.com/heroescon!

The con was Friday – Saturday on sunny June 22-24th, at the Charlotte Convention Center with guest & dealer set up starting on Thursday night. All of the guests, artists, publishers, fan groups, small press & exhibitors were together in one huge bay on the lower level, with the main entry & ticketing on the main floor, food court & conferences rooms also upstairs, where there were the discussion panels & presentations about super heroes, indy & small press topics, fantasy & horror genres, comics history & critique, art demonstrations, tutorials & contests!

The activities were not confined to the convention center, what with Saturday’s 7 am downtown fun run, and the big 8 pm art auction in the Westin hotel across the street! I was not able to attend for the entire weekend this year and went there on Saturday with 5 other friends in a nice comfy van. We arrived a little after 10 am, managed to park nearby, and did not have to wait too long to get the badges. It is a huge crowd, but the police, parking, hotel & convention center staff, and Shelton’s team all do such a great friendly & efficient job to make it a fun & safe event!

The comic book sized program book had the cute Love & Rockets front cover art by Jamie Hernandez!  is always well done, and it is an invaluable help with an alphabetical list of the guests, artist alley & dealers, the map of the main hall, the schedule of activities, and plots of great art! I was so lucky in that I rarely had to wait in line a long time to chat with the guests and get autographs, starting with Jill Thompson & Evan Dorkin who signed the Beasts of Burden hardcover, then I got to chat with Christos Gage who wonderfully writes Avengers Academy and Angel & Faith!

It was so nice to see Loston & Caroline Wallace again, who were not able to be there last year! I got to chat a while with Frank Cho, my old friend Jim Amash, and I got a sketch by Wayne Vansant which we will discuss more later! Others I briefly chatted with included Richard Case, Cliff Chiang, Sean Chen, Karl Story, Billy Tucci, Bill Willingham and Berni Wrightson! Neal Adams, George Perez & Adam Hughes were back! I think the longest line I saw there was probably for Stan Lee, although the longest line I waited in was for Walt Simonson, who signed the Alien graphic novel!

Chatting with Paty Cockrum and seeing the late Dave Cockrum’s art there is always poignant, and one of the special highlights for me was getting to do lunch with our friend Andrew Pepoy! I definitely spent more time meeting the guests and spending time with old friends than I did shopping, although my final purchases of the day were a sketchbook by Sarah ‘Pickles” Dill http://www.distillum.com, and Kerry Lynn Thompson’s http://www.skyscrapersoup.com urban fantasy comic This Is The Worst Idea You’ve Ever Had, which co-stars a catgirl named Cynthia!

Speaking of catgirls, there were many nekomimi at the con, including those wearing the new robot cat ears which the Discover Place museum store was selling! There are always a lot of great costumes at Heroes Con, mostly of the super hero sort, but plenty representing other characters of comics, animation, games & movies! The fans & cosplayers are of all ages, genders & races including cross-play (portraying a character of the opposite gender, which was mostly girls cosplaying as male characters. In various quantities, the characters cosplayed at Heroes Con 30 included:

a Rocketeer Girl, Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Super Woman, Super Girl, Batgirl, Black Canary, Raven, Miss Martian Artemis, Death, Cat Woman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Death, Promethia, The Black Cat (Marvel), Elektra, Storm, Kitty, Rogue, Phoenix, Dark Phoenix, Ms. Marvel, X-23, Pixy, Lightspeed, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Miss Liberty, Valkyrie, Thor Girl, Thor, Loki, Hulk, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Captain America, Bucky, Nick Fury, Wolverine, Gambit, Havok, Black Bolt, Spider-Man, Deadpool, The Punisher, The Joker, Bane, Commissioner Gordon, Batman, Robin, Kid Flash, Green Arrow,

Green Lantern (Guy Gardner), Captain Marvel (Shazam), The Baroness, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, The Green Hornet, Indiana Jones, Princess Leia & various jedi, Stormtroopers, Imperial Officers, Starfleet Officers, Klingons, an Andorian, Homestuck troll girls, folks in various goth & fantasy apparel- and that was just on Saturday! Organizations included the 501st, Carolina Ghostbusters, the Klingon Assault Group, Savannah College of Art & Design, Comic book Legal Defense Fund, Hero initiative and various other charitable organizations with strong ties to the comics community!

We met a couple of other members of the Carolina Comic Book Club there, and later rode Charlotte’s light rail train a few city blocks to our supper destination, and the during the pleasant late night drive home we ate cinnamon buns and listened to B52’s songs and various Japanese sentai & dai kaiju soundtracks. It was wonderful time as usual, and I am hoping to attend again next year, when Heroes Con 31 will take place on June 7-8, 2013! Next year I that hope we can–

Yvonne:

zzz… suppurr nya… zzz…

Tara-chan:

Jeannie

Nyanko:

Well, we has noted that it is the family purredilection, nya!

Petra:

Elizabeth

Becca:

(Becca activates the Cat Nap App which jingles them to wake)

Mielikki:

Yvonne:

Nyawn nyawn I’m awake, nya!

Tara-chan:

Nyawn nyawn me too, nya!

Bun:

(her bunny ears purrked) Me three!

Ilyana:

Oh I hope my report will not induce the catnap! Mike did you have more?

Mike:

Ah well I was about done anyway, and now it is time for Ilyana’s

G.I.Joe Convention 2012 Report!

Ilyana:

The Official G.I. Joe Convention http://www.gijoecon.com convened on the sunny warm weekend of June 28- July 1st 2012 in the Hilton Hotel by the river, just a few blocks from the World War II mewseum in New Orleans! We went there with our friend Ob1 the Action Figurologist who was our special guest in October 2007! It was the long road trip to and from the con, going through a few states on the journey to and from North Carolina to Louisiana, but it was the safe, sunny smooth road trip with plenty of stops along the way!

It was the multicultural gathering with fans of all ages & genders & races there from all over the world, including a lot of the military veterans who we are very purroud of nya! Among the special guests of the con were the purrolific voice actors Will Ryan & Neil Ross, masterful artists Larry Selman & Rod Whigham, toy expurrt author Mark Bellomo, Kirk Bozigan who was the original purroduct manager for the GI Joe: A Real American Hero, and several repurrsentatives from IDW and Hasbro who brought displays of art, toy purrototypes & sneak purreviews!

The artistry of the fans was on display too, in the amazing customized figures, the diorama scenes of various scales, and the costumes! among the characters repurrsented by the cosplayers of all ages & genders were Daina, Lady Jaye, Snow White, Jinx, Zarana, Zaranya, The Baroness, Sgt Slaughter, Flint, Hawk, Short Fuse, Beach Head, Stormavik, Stormshadow, Cobra Commander, the Yeti, Vipurr & Steel Brigade, and the Dreadnocks in their Cold Slither band purrsonas! Supurrb cosplayer Rosemary Ward conducted a great panel on making costumes!

Daina & Stormavik are members of the elite Soviet Oktober Guard team, which was the special theme of the convention exclusive action figures boxed set, and the neat comic book story in the convention purrogram! The terrific comic book story of the Oktober Guard fighting Cobra was written by David S Lane, & Forest Lee, pencilled by Sheldon Goh & inked by Josh Warner, colored by Thomos Deer & Lettered by Jesse Wittenrich! The con purrogramming of the panels & purresentations included the autograph sessions, toy workshops, movie & comics topics!

Of course the toys are the major aspect of the con, and the dealers room was full of recent & vintage toys, from the older 12″ figures of the 1960’s to the latest 3.75″ size figures based upon the forthcoming movie! You could find them in all purrice ranges, from the less expensive loose figures who have seen the battles, to the purristine toys still sealed in the package! While it was vastly of the GI Joe figures & vehicles, there were also others to be found, such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Transformers, Marvel, DC, Masters of the Universe, Thundercats, Major Matt Mason!

Saturday night in the grand ballrooms was the fun casino night with food, games, costume contest & the auction for the charity! Sunday was the more leisurely day of the con and it was over before we knew it because we were so busy having such a fun time!  It is was the fun event for fans of the GI Joe toys, comics & cartoons, in the very festive city full of the flavorful food! I purrticularly liked the gumbo, the jambalaya, the crawtaters, the sammiches, the pudding and the gator meat. Everyone we met at the convention or in the city were so very friendly & cordial!

They say there are lots of the haunted spots in New Orleans but I did not see any appurritions as far as I know. I would definitely like to attend another G.I. Joe Con, and I would certainly like to revisit the city because there is still so much that we did not get to do this time! I would like to heartily thank Ob1 and all of the delightful people who contributed to the fun! That will conclude this month’s con report portion of The Mew, because nyow it is time for this month’s–

Mary Nyan:

Hai, and nyow to continue the art topic here are Petra & Bun to tell us about this month’s

Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!

Bun:

Hai we are proud to announce the opening of Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html at the Catgirl Island mewseum of Art, and we wish to thank web master Jamie for making that happen! if you are mew to the mewseum, Galleries 1-6 display Mike’s illustrations & photography, whilst Guest Galleries 1 & 2 display images by other artists with their permissions,! The most recent pics are on the bottom row of the widdle thumbnail portions, so just click on one to see the whole image! Firstly of this month’s pics is the Photoshopped photo of

Crissy as Star Trek’s Lt. M’ress!

Petra:

Our cosplayer / artist friend Crissy Teverni http://www.crimsonskycreations.com was among the special guests of The Mew in March of 2008, and we were so happy that she could visit us again this past May, as one of the returning friends for our 5th Anniversary Mew, nya! Among her costumes is the licensed Star Trek original series Starfleet Red women’s uniform which she purrchased from Rubies Costumes, accessorized with the pair of the Black boots, and wore purrched upon the couch, for the photo by Louis, nya!

With the purrmission, Mike transformed Louis’s original photo http://www.crimsonskycreations.com/bloodsweatandglitter into this image of her as Lt. M’Ress, the Caitian communications officer catgirl voiced by Majel Barret in the animated Star Trek series, nya! Mike changed Crissy’s collar, hair, skin, skin, ears & facial features & kept her basic human physiology instead of the felinoid paws & legs, but added the tail and removed the boots, since M’Ress was the barefoot catgirl, nya! Appurrently Capt. Kirk did not mind, nya!

Mike altered the room’s furnishings, decor & lighting to a bit more resemble the starship quarters, nya! The purretty afghan across the couch was made by Crissy’s mom, to which Mike digitally added the widdle Starfleet pattern; the art on her wall is the detail from one of his acrylic paintings; the foreground items are the photos he took of the 11′ USS Enterprise model at the Smithsonian in Washington DC, and the water lilly at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens, with the Purrple glow added for the cosmic effect, nya! Next is

Lt. M’ress illustrated by Mike, nya!

Petra:

Also in Gallery 6 is Mike’s illustration of M’Ress, based upon that pose of Crissy purrched upon the couch, nya! Lt. M’ress is a part of Star Trek, which is a trademark of Paramount Pictures, but Mike does not sell the fan art, and this was a free widdle pic to purrk up Crissy who was in sickbay, but fortunately she is feeling better nyow, nya! This was a pencil drawing inked with Micron pens, colored with the Copic & Purrismacolor markers & colored pencils, then scanned into the computer, where Mike used the mouse & Photoshop to spurruce it up a bit, nya!

After the neat animated series, which is supposedly considered by Paramount to not be part of the official Star Trek cannocity, M’Ress later appurred in some of the also non-canonical Star Trek novels & comic books, nya! Y’all can learn more about the wonderful character from her purrofile page at the Official Star Trek Site http://www.startrek.com/database_article/mress, her page at the online Star Trek encyclopedia Memory Alpha http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/M%27Ress, and her entry at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M’Ress, nya! Thirdly we have

Strawberry & Blueberry illustrated by Mike, nya!

Petra:

Nextly in Gallery 6 is Mike’s illustration of our artist / cosplayer friend Misty Hopkins’s http://bunnychan.deviantart.com fan- characters “Strawberry & Blueberry”, who are based on the fun anime series Saber Marionette! nya! The original character designs of the anime were by Hidekazu Sekishima, based on the works by Satoru Akahori, nya! Strawberry on the left is the more cheerfully vivaciously carefree of the gynoid siblings, whereas Blueberry on the right is the more conservative, responsible, easily embarrassed older sister type, nya!

Similar in technique to the M’Ress pic, Mike’s original image of those Berry sisters started out as the pencil drawing, which was inked with the Micron pens, colored with the Copic & Purrismacolor markers and colored pencils, embellished with the bit of White acrylic paint, scanned and spurruced up with Photoshop & the mouse, nya. Mmm lookit that numcious spurread of food for their rooftop picnic, nya! Purrhaps y’all have seen the purrior pics we have of Strawberry illustrated by Misty and by Mike, nya? Nyow here is Bun to tell us about

Himari illustrated by Misty Hopkins, nya!

Bun:

Hai! Now we will proceed to Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html where the catgirl art continues with the two mew pics by Misty She was also among the special guests of The Mew in March of 2008! We got to see her again recently at the 5th Anniversary Mew and at the anime con Animazement! Firstly of the two pics by Misty is the lovely fan art portrait “Himari”, the demon – fighting voluptuous catgirl purrotagonist of Milan Matra’s Omamori Himari manga! The marker & colored pencil technique captures Himari’s shimmering eyes & supple ears, the swirling pony tail, and the yukata with the cherry blossom print which reveals the busty decolletage!

Tara-chan and Trini-chan illustrated by Misty!

Trini-chan:

Nya!!!

Tara-chan:

Oh my stars!

Yvonne:

Happy Birthday, nya!

Bun:

Heehee we thoughtcha would be surprised! Of course, Tara-chan is the kitsune on the left and Tara-chan is the catgirl on the right in this delightful pretty scene of the best friends sharing the nummy fruity drink which brings the happy swish to one’s tail in the maritime park after the fun time at the beach! Mmm that sure looks like the tasty treat! This pic was Misty’s half of the art trade with Mike, in exchange for the pic of Strawberry & Blueberry! The bright vivid colors of the colored pencil technique convey the happy island spirit! Lastly but not leastly for today is–

Katusha illustrated by Wayne Vansant!

Bun:

Wayne Vansant http://www.myspace.com/48161809 is such a friendly gentleman artist, author & historian who specializes in the historical & military comics! He has written & drawn comics about the American Civil War, World War II, and the war in Vietnam! We are so pleased to present this commissioned pencil sketch of his own character “Katusha, Girl Soldier of the Great Patriotic War!” She is a pretty & brave soldier of the Russian Army in World War II, posing with the triangularly folded letter and the framed family picture by her T-34 tank! That will do it for this months additions to the galleries!

Trini-chan:

Arigato gozaimasu!

Tara-chan:

We must thank Misty for the wonderful art, nya!

Nyoka:

Congratulations on the new gallery!

Bun:

Arigato! There will be a grand opening, with the cakes!

Petra:

We will have the birthday cake tonight at the AfterMew Luau too, nya!

Jeannie:

Wayne is quite adept at rendering the mecha.

Elizabeth:

That is a lovely pic of Himari The Crimson Blade!

Ilyana:

Crissy would be the supurrb M’Ress cosplayer!

Nyanko:

Mike has definitely convinced me to watch the animated Trek!

Yvonne:

It is the purrade of catgirl, warrior girl & gynoid art in the meweum, nya!

Mielikki:

I hope Misty liked the berries pic!

Mike:

I think so! Fortunately I’ve drawn Strawberry before, and Misty provided plenty of notes & reference pics!

Becca:

Yattah! More gynoid art!

Mary Nyan:

hat is all of the art portion of The Mew, but after the short break we will discuss

Toys & Collectibles!

(snip) (one short break later…)

Mary Nyan:

Welcome back! Nyow here is Trini-chan to discuss the

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Aayla Secura action figure!

Trini-chan

The heroic Jedi Master & General Aayla Secura is one of our favoritest Star Wars characters! She is of the Twi’lek race from the planet Ryloth, with the supple Lekku “head tails” and her beautiful Blue skin!

She was portrayed by Amy Allen in the movies Sta Wars Episodes II & III, and has been voiced by Jennifer Hale in the animated Clone Wars series!

Between us we already had a few figures of Aayla, but the animated Clone Wars figure of her was the elusive one, so we were very happy when Hasbro reissued the figure CW14 this year! Since Aayla is supposedly 5’10” tall, that would make his 3 1/2″ action figure of 1/20th scale! It is not intended for children under age 3 due to the small parts. Her points of the articulation are her neck, waist, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, & ankles, so she is very posable, and she can stand up unassisted, but the widdle rectangular display base is included!

The paint & sculpting of the figure are very good from the serious expression on her face & the Brown lacings around her lekku to match her Brown eyes to the inny belly button on her bare tummy & the patterns, seams & straps of her clothes! She wears the asymmetrical low cut dark Brown cropped top which matches the tight pants worn low on her lovely hips, and the leathery Tan belt to match her knee length boots! She is accessorized by the 2 3/4″ long silvery hilt light saber with the translucent Blue blade, and the 4 pieces of her flying rocket pack!

It is very easy to assemble the rocket pack & oxygen mask with the goggles, but to put it on her shoulders you will need to temporarily pop her head off of the neck’s ball joint, but it is designed with that in mind and it easily snaps back on! Also enclosed are the quick simple instructions and her character card for the Galactic Battle Game which you can play with the action figures! The card has the nice spic of her on the front and her stats on the back!

Her stats are the force ability of 11, battle skill of 12, intelligence of 11, mechanical skill of 10, leadership of 9 & the luck of 10! Those seem like pretty high stats! I am very pleased with the action figure, and I will find the good spot to display Aayla next to her fellow lady Jedi! You can read more about at her official Star Wars page http://www.starwars.com/explore/encyclopedia/characters/aaylasecura and her thorough page at Wookieepedia http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Aayla_Secura! Now here is Jenjen to tell us about the

Batman: Arkham City Catwoman action figure!

Jeannie

This is the Catwoman figure from the Mattel’s Legacy Edition set of Batman & Catwoman as depicted in the Arkham City video game. The pack of 2 figures is also available in a variant ashen gray paint finish, whereas I am reviewing the version of the more standard colors, in which Selina Kyle alias Catwoman is in the Black costume.

In the video game her voice is purrvided by the purrolific Grey DeLisle, who is one of our favoritest voice actors. Catwoman & Batman figures are bundled in the 12″ x 11.5″ x 2 .75″ packaging of the clear plastic ‘clamshell’ on the card, with the Gotham City rooftop scene on the front of the card and the photos of the figures on the back.

She is 6.75″ tall including the high heels & ears, but flatfooted without the mask she would be 6.25″. Since Selina is purrsumably 5’7″ tall, that would make this figure of appurroximately 1:10.72 scale.

She is accessorized by the flexible whip which is 10.25″ long plus the handle’s loop strap, which if real would be appurroximately 9′ long.

Except for the exposed bits of her face, neck and unzipped cleavage, from ears to toes she is fully dressed in the sexy tight leathery costume, with the silvery buckles, zippurrs, kitty tag in the choker & opaque Red goggle lenses. You cannot see her eyes, but her light Pink lips purrtray the slight smile as if she is pleased with the situation.

The purroportions,  sculpting and painting are quite purrcise and meticulous, from the subtle yet intricate seams, straps, patterns, textures of the costume, the different shinier sheen of the boots, and her sexy supple curves. She has quite the lithe figure of very faithful resemblance, and her right hand is clenched to snugly wield that whip.

Not only is she the beautiful figure but she is highly posable too! Her 17 points of articulation are the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, sternum, waist, hips, thighs, knees and the ankles. There are no display bases included with the figures, but she is the agile graceful cat who can be posed in the balanced stance to stand unassisted.

I am very pleased with this excellent figure, which will be purrched upon the shelf beside the Golden Age Catwoman, which we reviewed in May. It is the bountiful time for Selina’s figure, with the figures of The Dark Knight Rises Catwoman (resembling Anne Hathaway) and different Arkham City Catwoman sold individually from DC Direct.

The DC Direct Arkham City Catwoman figure differs from the Mattel Arkham City Catwoman figure in that her goggles are off to reveal her face, the finish of her costume is slightly lighter, the whip is coiled upon her right hip, a bola weapon is also included, and she has the more purractical  flat soled boot treads instead of the high heels.

We hope to review that movie for next month’s Mew. Selina is still extremely spurry for the nekomimi who debuted in 1940, and I purrsume that she must still have more of her 9 lives. Speaking of which, here is Nyoka-sensei to tell us about another catgirl in Black of many years who stalks her purrey and likes the jewels, in this month’s

Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight

Nyoka:

Since 2012 is the the 70th anniversary of the 1942 Cat People movie starring Simone Simon as Irina and the 30th anniversary of the 1982 remake starring Nastassja Kinski, it is only appopurriate that for this month we shine the Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight on yet another famous were-panther grrl this month!

There have been numerous girls of cinema, TV, comix & manga who transform into the black cats large & small such as Irina, Ophelia, Isis, Shakira, Kei, Chelsea, Leonora, Koma, Rosabelle, Maya, Shuri, Yoruichi, and Force Captain Catra. Please see the July 20i1 Mew for our Panther Special Spotlight!

This month’s honoree is Pantha! Not to be confused with Pantha of the Teen Titans or Purrincess Pantha the jungle girl, she is the incarnation of the Egyptian Goddess Sekhmet, who first appurred in the tale by Rafael Auraleon and Steve Skeates in Vampirella #30, published by Warren in January 1974!

It is a year and a half until her 40th anniversary! She is lithe immortal brunette exotic beauty of the Egyptian heritage, with the lush long hair, wearing the Black bikini with the spots, the gold jewels, and occasionally the matching thigh boots & opurra- length gloves, when she is in human form!

She can still talk when she is on the purrowl as the ferocious Panther! She is a friend of Vampirella, having appurred in Vampirella’s comics, her own magazine in 1980, and issues of Harris Comics in the 90’s. A few of tales have been collected in the Vampirella vs Pantha trade papurrback!

She has been drawn by numerous great artists over the years, and purrtrayed by the costumed models too! Pantha’s mew comic book just purremiered from Dynamite Entertainment, so on that note we will nyow segue from the spotlight portion of The Mew and into our

Comics Critiques & Manga Mewsings!

Pantha #1

Nyoka:

We were excited to see the return of pantha! This purremier is purriced $3.99, rated T+  and has the 32 full color pages compurrised of the 4 page Spider purreview, the 3 pages of the ads, the 2 pages of Dynamite mews, the 1 page dedication to the late Arthur Lieberman, and the 22 page tale of “Dangerous Game”!

It was written by Brandon Jerwa, drawn by Pow Rodrix, colored by Thiago Dal Bello, lettered by Marshall Dillon & edited by Joe Rybandt! The variant covers include the more common cover A by Sean Chen & cover B by Mark Texeira, and three retailer incentive variant covers! Chen & Texeira were both at Heroes Con!

It is already off to the good start with the good signs, because Texeira is the veteran Pantha artist, and Sean Chen is no stranger to the catgirls as he used to awesomely drew Tigra for Avengers Academy, and Dynamite seems to have the flare for the femme fatales’ comic books such as Vampirella, Red Sonja & Dejah Thoris!

I selected the Sean Chen cover A which is the beautiful pose of Pantha in her bikini, boots, gloves & jewels as the Panther’s eyes peer from the darkness! The tale starts with the ancient Egypt flashback which is the handy origin for those unfamiliar with Pantha, but it also sets up a monstrous threat from those days!

Pantha is busy rescuing the kidnaped victims, but those kidnappurrs do not only face her claws, but the fangs of another immortal shape changer, Mamba! She is becomes the giant deadly snake much to the criminals’ much deserved bloody agony, but Pantha and Mamba are not pleased to see each other again!

Mamba also has the bikini costume, of the shimmering Golden snake skin style, with the matching serpentine bracelets & boots! Although she is there to rescue poor victim Maya from the criminals, it seems to be for her own schemes, so I am rather curious to see what happens in the next issue! Nyow here is Lizzy to review

Before Watchmen: Silk Specter #1!

Elizabeth:

We were so surpurrised to hear of these purrequel comics! based upon Alan Moore & Dave Giobbons’s Watchmen! We were not even imagining the notion of such things, but we thought the Watchmen movie turned out purretty good, and when we saw the roster of the top talent on these purrequels, we had the optimistic outlook!

Darwyn Cooke is at the helm of the Minutemen comic, and he is also co-writing this Silk Spectre comic with Amanda Conner who is one of our all – time favoritest artists! Her issues of Power Girl was one of our favoritest comics from DC in recent years, so we were eagerly quick to pounce upon this comic!

It was beautifully colored by Paul Mounts who has often collaborated with Conner, lettered by Carlos M Mangual, and edited by Mark Chiarello with associate Chris Conroy & assistant Camilla Zhang! It has the spiffy cover by Conner & Mounts, plus the other variant covers by Dave Johnson, and Jim Lee with Scot Williams & Alex Sinclair!

The issue is rated “M” so it is not for the widdle kitties, purriced at $3.99 and it has the 32 full color pages compurrised of the 23 page tale plus the 6 pages of the ads, the 1 page discussion of the comic, and because it is the Watchmen comic it includes the bonus 2 page pirate tale by Len Wein, John Higgins & Sal Cipriano!

You have to get The Comedian #1 for the continuation of the gritty high seas adventure. Nyow this Silk Spectre comic is set in the mid 1960’s as Laurel tries to go about the mewsual teenage high school activities, which would already be burdensome enough if she were not the daughter of the celebrity original Silk Spectre!

As such, Laurel benefits from the tough training so that she is extremely athletic and can beat up the jerks, but she feels too hemmed in by the rules of the house and her mom’s intentions! Highlights of this first issue include the catfight scene, track & field fun, the soda shop date interrupted by the mean girls, and the VW Microbus!

Everything is so beautifully rendered and the storytelling technique is supurrb! Conner is one of the bestest masters of the characters’ expurressions, poses, gestures & body language, and the added widdle cartoonier panels to emphasize certain emotional moments are so wonderfully purriceless!

This is purrobably my favoritest comic since DC reboot all of their comics last year, and I will give this issue the high grade of “A” as in Archimides! Nyow I would like to say a few words of purraise for another comic of the mother & daughter heroic legacy, but with the nekomimi purrsuasion–

Critter vol. 2 #1!

Elizabeth:

When I saw the front cover art depicting purrky cute catgirl Cassie alias Critter smiling & waving to us as she hangs upside down from the tree branch, I could not resist the closer peek! Published by Big Dog Ink, Critter was created & written by Tom Hutchison, illustrated & colored by Fico Ossio & lettered by Kel Nuttall!

The $3.50 issue has the 28 full color pages compurrised of the 22 page tale followed by the 6 pages of the ads! This is the format I purrfur, with any ads & extras sepurrate from the uninterrupted story! It is available in the 3 variant covers, cover A by Fico Ossio cover B by Owen Gieni, and C by Carlos Reno. I got cover B!

The tale purrtains to Cassia Crawford, allias Critter the supurr heroine from Michigan, whose telekinetic mom was also the nekomimi supurr heroine! She was a member of the hero team CORE and nyow Cassie has roamed to Los Angeles to join the Purrfection team compurrised of Tabitha, Kitten, Mouser & Pole Kat!

Cassie has the lovely Red hair & Blue eyes, wearing the Yellow midriff top, hip hugger jeans, Blue boots & stetson by day, and the darker outfit with the jacket, garters, striped hose, buccaneer boots & sharp claws to purrey upon the criminals by night, however her Purrfection friends have the costume make  –  over in mind!

She is invited to join the team with the nice posh place and the $10k purr month, plus the potential deals as the celebrity and the attraction of the Hollywood stardom! This is quite tempting compurred to her college goals, so she makes her purremier in the tight shiny Blue & White bare midriff costume with the ears & tail!

They want to rename her as Josie. Purrfection costumes are similar but each has the different color: giddy Kitten’s is the Green with the skirt,, Mouser’s is the Purrple & Fuchsia, and Pole Kat’s is Gold & Orange with the fishnets!  Tabitha has the flowy skirt with the strapless top, fingerless fishnet gloves & the cat pendant!

They might not catch the fish with those nets but they catch the attention, which is be part of their agenda! It is working too, because they are the media darlings whose image sells the mewspapurrs, which is why Jason the papurrazzi photographer wants to get the scoop when she confidently pounces upon a winged villain!

She is also being watched by the mysterious costumed time traveller known as Paradox! This comic book was full of the peppy frisky fun of the feline femme fatales, and I am curious to see what they do next! That will do it for my comic boo reports, but nyow here is Vonny to tell us what Tigra and White Tiger are up to in–

Avengers Academy #31

Yvonne:

Arigato, nya! Issue #31 continues the plot from issue #29, in which is part of the big cross-over story spanning various Marvel comics as The Avengers & X-Men fight each other and try to purrvent the Phoenix Force from attacking the Earth, nya! The older heroes don’t think the younger heroes are ready for the battle, so the latter bunch is unhappy to be told they can’t leave the academy, nya!

This results in further bickering amongst the heroes, nya! The adults appurring in this issue are Tigra, Hercules, Dr. Kavita Rao & Madison Jeffries from the X-Men’s Utopia base, and to further complicate the situation is their purrisioner Sebastian Shaw, nya! Repurrsenting the X-Men there are Loa, Pixie, Dust, Transonic, Surge, Celeste, Phoebe, Mindee, Progidy, Primal, Crosta & Velocidad, nya!

Repurrsenting the Avengers Academy are White Tiger, X-32, Finesse, Lightspeed, Hazmat, Striker, Mettle. Reptil,  Lyrra, Ricochet, Justin and his Sentinel, nya! Lyrra, No-Girl, Whiz Kid, Quicksilver, Hawkeye, Captain America & Wolverine were in issue #29 but I did not see them in this issue, nya. In issue #31 there was much feuding, during which Shaw escaped to confront the kids, nya!

However, it is ironic that he has one of the cooler heads and the reasonable dispurrsition in “Protective Services Part 3” which was written by Christos Gage, pencilled by Tom Grummett, inked by Cory Hamscher, lettered by Joe Caramagna, colored by Chris Sotomayor, edited Bill Rosemann with assistant Jake Thomas, and has the cover art by Giuseppe Camuncoli & Jim Charalampidis, nya!

This issue starts with the impurressive full page pic as Shaw has his say, the great two page spurread as the teams start brawling again, and several nice panels with Tigra & White Tiger, in the action nya!

Tigra shows the combination of her ingenuity, her savage purrowess & her maternal instincts, nya! Mike was kind enough to tell Mr. Gage at Heroes Con how much we admire Tigra, nya!

It is the tough decision for X-23 who has the friends making the good points on both sides, nya. It has the good balance of the calmer discussions and the fight scenes, surfing and the serious moments & the amewsing moments, and I purrticularly liked the final page but I do not wish to spoil the plot, however nyow I will purroceed to

Avengers Academy #32, nya!

Yvonne:

This next issue continues the big Marvel- wide AVX crossover but begins the new phase! It is set a bit later as Justin continues to fix his Sentinel, much to the dislike of X-23 and Emma Frost who want to scrap the robot, nya! Of course this is understandable because Sentinels were designed to hunt the mewtants and sometimes he says the wrong thing, nya!

This is set after Avengers vs X-Men #5, in which Emma and several other X-Men were bestowed with the Phoenixy power & costumes so she has been destroying Sentinels & other weapons around the world, and Justin’s Sentinel is next on her list, nya! This results in the arguments and the philosophical discussions, but mostly the fighting as mewsual, nya!

It is nice that they want to make the world more peaceful, as mewsual I do not find Emma very sympathetic, although I peoplecan change and I was surpurrised with Shaw’s behavior, nya!  It is the fun & action packed issue with the sad poignant flashbacks as the situation reminds X-32 of the heartbreaking puppy choice she had to make as the widdle girl, nya.

This issue also had the different penciller Timothy Green II & inker Jeff Huet and I really liked their artistry, nya! The characters were so nicely expurressive & posed and seen from the interesting angles & distances, and the style has the more slender look, which purrfectly suits lithe X-23, Hazmat & White Tiger, who cutely swoops down for the girl talk, nya!

Also appurring in this issue are Giant Man, Mettle, Reptil, Striker, Prodigy, Lightspeed & Tigra, but Tigra is only seen in the 2 panels, nya. Magick, Colossus, & Namor who are also phoenixed are seen on the monitors, nya. The coloring continues to be so richly vibrant and one of the favorite aspects, and I purrticularly like Lightspeed’s rainbow trail effect, nya!

Avengers Academy has the interesting mail from the readers, to which Christos Gage thoroughly & polite responses, nya! The mail purrticularly interested us this time because one of the letters was from our friend Dan Foust, who also happens to be the editor of a small purress comic book made here in North Carolina, so nyow here is Mike to discuss–

The Rise #2, nya!

Mike

Yep, we wish to continue to congratulate David Trustman of Black Angus Comics on the mainland in Raleigh on the launch of his own comic book, which he wrote, illustrated & purrinted, with Dan’s editing help! We reviewed issue #1 in the May Mew! Issue #2 has the 26 page story in color, plus the 2 pics of  Olive the warrior woman who appears on the front cover!

She has the lovely Purple hair & eyes, although at the moment is drenched Red with the blood of her opponents, so I should probably mention that this action – packed comic book is not for the widdle kitties due to the extreme gory bloody violence of the super – powered street fights and the gladiatorial arena, plus the profanity of the trash – talking opponents!

While Helios Magnus fights Ultro at the bank, his associate Uri is pleased to sic his merciless grrl friend Olive & telepathic guard Maddie upon upon the prisoners! Olive & Maddie might be pretty with their Purple coiffures and Roman styled apparel, but it is not the pretty scene! Later we see Uri in more action against the sorcerous enemy on the battlefield!

The burly melee includes the graphic clobber, electrocution, decapitation, disembowelment, impalement, the head butt, the skull crush, the mental & magickal attacks, so it is not for the faint of heart to ponder what Uri’s ultimate political endgame is, or whether he is the ruthless anti-hero or the villain, as a new opponent Battlestar arrives to issue the threatening challenge!

Michael Turner’s Fathom vol. 4 #6

Becca:

We are big fans  of the late Michael Turner’s art and his wonderful marine biologist / supurr heroine Dr. Aspen Matthews of the Fathom comics published by her namesake Aspen Comics which Turner founded. Nyow I will dive right into Michael Turner’s Fathom Vol. 4 #6 , which is purriced at $3.50 and has the 28 pages compurrised of the 20 page story “The Deep End” plus the 8 pages of ads!

It was written by Scott Lobdell & David Wohl, pencilled by Alex Konat & Cory Smith, colored by Beth Sotelo & Lettered by Josh Reed, edited by Aspen’s editor – in – chief Vince Hernandez & Aspen’s purresident Frank Mastromauro, with design & purrduction by Aspen’s vice purresident Peter Steigerwald & Aspen’s director of design & purrduction Mark Roslan, with assistant Chaz Riggs.

Issue #6 is available in four different covers; cover ‘A’ by Konat & Steigerwald, cover ‘B’ Michah Gunnell is the one I have, the rarer retailer incentive exclusive cover ‘C’ is the uncolored line-art of ‘A’, and the rarer San Diego Comic Con exclusive cover by J Scott Campbell, Tim Townshen & Guy Major is limited to only 100 copies! I got  cover ‘B’  which depicts peppy Aspen rising from the sea!

Purreviously in this nonlinear tale, after rescuing hostages from pirates, visiting the spurrawling research center, battling murderous purrasites & thwarting an assassination attempt at the UN, Aspen was joined her assistant Judith Bayanaski & colleague Dr. Colin Woreth to visit the palace of the Sheik of Rytal in Saudi Arabia, to see the subterranean ocean discovered beneath the Sahara desert!

Along with the Sheik’s tough Executive Assistant Ms. Shelleth (there are numerous Executive Assistants in Aspen Comics), in a small bathysphere they explored the beautiful ocean teeming with strange fishies & vast riches, and the hostile aquatic humanoid who was once Shelleth’s associate Dr. Padma Singh, purrior to surgical alterations, but she does not seem to recognize them

Aspen left the sub and unsuccessfully tried to communicate with Padma, before they were all rudely ambushed by an army of undersea commandos, who damaged the bathysphere and captured Aspen & Padma. Juditth & Colin were also knocked out and captured, but Shelleth and the sheik managed to eject unnoticed, to safely elude & discreetly follow the mysterious soldiers to their base.

Colin awoke in one of the undersea structures to meet a woman named Sana, who explained their opurrations. She is the assistant to Dr. Nakamura, an enemy scientist thought to have purreviously perished, but nyow he works for the Japanese government’s secret undersea oil drilling and on the expurriments on the technology of the civilization known as The Blue, where Aspen is from.

Shelleth & the sheik snuck through a nearby submerged cathedral full of guards and a religious cult  who had Padma captive on a watery alter. Elsewhere in the cathedral, Aspen awoke, defeated the guards, and swam to a nearby bio-mechanical structure for the reunion with the monologuing vengeful Dr. Nakamura. Colin was brought there, but Judith’s condition & location are unknown.

In issue #6, Nakamura finally shuts up, and not only are Judith & Colin captive, but so is the Sheik, in the clutches of the cult’s guards who have a standoff with Shelleth, until Aspen trounces more  of the commandoes & guards. Some of them wisely surrender! She & Shelleth try to free Padma, who almost recognizes Shelleth but attacks Aspen again, until the cult  captures them all over again!

Padma is the raging threat, but we feel sorry for her. My favorite moments of this issue are when Aspen effortlessly trounces the enemy in the deep Red hues of the ocean illuminated under the magma layer, her full page panel upon returning to the cathedral, and Shelleth swooping down into the crouched action! The comic’s use of the coloring and lighting is quite sumptuous!

Unfortunately, the plot does not seem to have advanced very far, purrhaps due to the flashbacks & expositions since Fathom Vol. 4 #0 was published back in June 2011. Also, it seems like the villains are having too easy a time, and I don’t think the Aspen seems as powerful or as in control of the situation as she should be. I am curious if the plot of the assassin purrasites will be revisited!

The lettering of the sound FX, spoken & internal dialogue is well done, and the amazing futuristic & exotic designs of the mecha, architectural & natural scenery are one of the book’s strengths, along with the beautiful characters, fashions, creatures & FX!  We want to see more of the neat huge ocean research center from the earlier issues! I hope Aspen will soon show them who is the boss–

Yvonne & Tara-chan:

WE’RE AWAKE, NYA!

Bun:

Me Too!

Becca:

Well I did not wish to seem too long – winded in my thoroughness! Now here is Mie-sensei to tell us about another favorite heroine’s adventures in

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #10!

Mielikki:

So like, the Buffy & Angel comics have been consistently among our favoritest for quite some time! issue #10 has the 28 full color pages including the story “Apart of Me Part Three”, 2 pages of readers’ comments and the 4 pages of ads! The story was was produced by Joss Whedon, scripted by Andrew Chambliss & Scott Allie, pencilled by Cliff Richards, inked by Andy Owens, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Sierra Hahn and Scott Allie with assistant editor Freddye Lins, designed by Justin Couch & published by Mike Richardson!

Purreviously after she, Spike & detective Dowling battled the hoard of vamps, Buffy found out that Andrew had secretly transferred her mind into a Buffy Bot Body, while the Buffy Bot’s sentience is in her real body, residing at a nice suburban house! Buffy wishes that she had a normal life in a nice home like that, but she wanted the purrocess reverted too. Before Spike’s airship could take them there to make the switch, the other Buffy was kidnapped by the evil renegade slayer Simone, and to make matters worse, the other Buffy defected to Simone’s influence and helped capture the real Buffy!

You can tell them apart now because the real Buffy has the repaired mech arm and wears the Yellow shirt, whereas the other Buffy has added the cute Pink streaks in her hair and wears the Blue shirt! This issue ensues with other Buffy & Simone monologuing to the captive real Buffy, whose mind is still in the gynoid body. Dawny & Xander are briefly seen trying to contact Buffy who is subdued without her phone; Detective Dowling deals with the aftermath of the vampire attack on the police & demise of his vamped partner Mirada Cheung, while Andrew, Spike & his bug crew attempt to rescue Buffy!

There is the totally witty banter between and the action – packed scenes as Buffy vs Buffy while the heavily armed Simone vs Spike & his airship’s insectoid crew, but that is just the first 2/3 of the issue, to be followed by the dramatic resolution to conclude the story arc! There seems to be plenty more on tap for the slayers, scoobies, bugs, vamps & police, and I so definitely curious to see what they do next! As Vonny noted, the pages of the readers’ letters which Scott Allie responds to are so interesting to read, and the current batch have a lot to say about the purregnancy & Buffybot topics, fur shur!

So like as usual the two variant covers’ art is splendid, between the Phil Noto version depicting Buffy in a vertigo-ish spiral of of doubtful thoughts, and the other by Georges Jeanty, Dexter Vines & Michelle Madsen, which seems like the homage to Crisis on Infinite Earths #7’s iconic death of Supergirl cover! They have been having a lot of fun of late with some of the cover art homages to comics written by Marv Wolfman, as Issue #6 had the delightful “Tomb of Dracula” homage! Now for my next review of a delightful Dark Horse comic based upon a favorite property, I would like to discuss–

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi #5!

Mielikki:

So like, I have been a fan of Star Wars since 1977 and it is still totally fresh & exciting 35 years later thanks to the extremely talented & enthused animators, actors authors & artists who continue the saga with the books, comics, cartoons, games, toys, cosplay & fandom! We have been especially pleased with the animated Clone Wars series which has given us the wonderful characters such as Ahsoka Tano, and greater roles for more strong female characters of the Jedi, Darthomir, droid & bounty hunter persuasion, from the farmers & politicians to the performers & parents!

Thusly we were very enthused about this latest series from Dark Horse comics, who have a history of Star Wars goodness, especially due to the magnificent wizardry Jan Duursema who is one of my favoritest artists; the setting of this tale in the mysterious ancient past thousands of years before the adventures of Luke Skywalker, and the promise of great new characters such as Shae Koda, Tasha, Sek’nos, Hawk Ryo, Rori Fenn, Master Kora, Quan-Jang and Xesh! It seems like just a blink when they were introduced, and now their first story arc has already concluded!

issue #0 was the primer to introduce the characters, places and concepts with such glorious images; issue #1 told more of the long history, and issue #2 gathered the Jedaii heroes Shae Tasha & Sek’nos to investigate the situation! We also met Shae’s winged Rancor Dragon named Butch! In issue #3 they fought the villain Xesh who was on the mission to hunt down other wielders of The Force, and in issue #4 Hawk, Rori & Quan-Jang searched for Shae, Tasha & Sek’nos who purrsued Xesh deeper into the stormy chasm, where they were attacked by the giant Rift Worm!

The $3.50 issue has 28 pages compurrised of the 22 page story “Force Storm Part Five (of Five)”, the 4 pages of the ads, 1 page of Dark Horse news & the 1 page of the comments! The tale was co-written & pencilled by Jan Duursema, co-written & scripted by John Ostrander, inked by Dan Parsons, lettered by Michael Heisler, colored by Wes Dzioba,  edited by Randy Stradley with Freddye Lins, designed by David Nestell and published by Mike Richardson, with the lovely cover art of Xesh by Duursema and Dzioba! My, the character designs & renderings are totally awesome!

In the 5th chapter, poor Butch is exhausted & injured in the the deep foreboding stormy chasm as Hawk, Rori & Quan-Jang search for Shae, Tasha & Sek’nos, who battle the giant monster with the timely assistance of their enemy Xesh! This alliance might be for their mutual survival, but they are far from trusting of each other!

There is still much to be sorted out, while elsewhere there continues to be more of the darkness brewing! It is brimming with the character development, spiritual communing, monster battle, exquisite mecha, environments, hopeful signs & sinister omens! That will conclude my comic book reports, but now here is Tara-chan to tell us about

Sunshine Sketch manga vol. 6!

Tara-chan:

Sunshine Sketch was written and – and drawn by Ume Aoki, with vol. 6 translated by Satsuki Yamashita and – and lettered by Keiran O’Leary!, nya! This is such a delightful story about Yuno and – and her class mates who live at the Hidemari residence for the artistic students, nya! For our review of vol. 5, please see the August 2011 Mew, nya!

It is the 4 panel  or Koma type gag comic strip format, which was was originally published as Hidemari Sketch by Houbunsha in Japan, nya! The English version is by Yen, who has published some of our other favorite mangas such as Ichiroh, Suzunari, Shoulder-A-Coffin Kuro, SS Astro, GA, K-ON, Omamori Himari, Spice and – and Wolf, nya!

Vol. 6 has the 120 pages, compurrised of the 114 pages of the manga, 8 of which are in color, plus the 6 pages notes, information, drawings and – and the author’s comments, nya! The book reads from right to left, with Yuno and – and  Nazuna on the front cover, while Sae and – and Hiro are amongst the Sunflowers on the back cover, nya!

The light hearted slice of life situations start as Yuno and – and Miyako try to beat the heat of the Summertime, nya! Then the residential manager treats Yuno, Miyako, Sae, Nazuna, Hiro and – and Nori to the delicious all – you- can eat Asian style BBQ, which is different from either the Eastern or Western styles of the North Carolina BBQ, nya!

They work on the Summertime purrojects, go to the art mewseum, and – and the theme park, where Nazuna wears the bunny ears, nya! Ikezawa – sensei who wears he glasses and – and Yoshinoya-sensei who has the large boobies enlist the students to help with the art exhibit, and – and they look after Mami-chan’s dog Pome-chan, nya!

Other activities include the study, the movies and – and the swimming, but the Summer break is over by page 85 when the semester resumes, nya! They plan for the school festival, seniors Sae and – and Hiro ponder their post – high school plans, Yoshinoya-sensei and – and Kuwahara-sensei discuss the students who will graduate soon, nya!

I like everything about this wonderful series! The characters are all very likable, the art style, the light hearted slice of life situations of the plot are very entertaining, and – and the art is excellent, nya! Nyow here is Nya-sensei to tell us about

Archie #634, nya!

Nyanko:

Arigato, Tara-chan! Appurroximately a year ago the romance blossomed between Archie and Valerie, which continued 3 months ago in the 4 part tale of the possible future in which they got married, akin to the purrior other alternate timelines in which Archie married Betty or Veronica! Purreviously in the tale, Veronica succeeded Valerie in The Pussycats, while her brother Trev fell in love with Betty and succeeded Archie in The Archies band, while Valerie & Archie formed a new duo, became the mewsic teachers, and had a wonderful daughter named Star! Kawaii!

Star so cute & purrky & joyful, with the doubly  inherited mewsical talent, her mommy’s purretty skin tone, her daddy’s Red hair & the freckles! It seems the happy successful scenario for everyone, but the romance between Betty & Trev interferes with the mewsic, Veronica has the fame & fortune but her heart still yearns for Archie, and the public adoration for Star gets out of hand as the fans, media & papurrazzi become too invasive & demanding! Valerie also has visions of the other alternate realities, which I will not spoil but it is the overwhelming expurrience!

Also appurring in this issue are Archie’s purrents, Jughead, Reggie, Moose, Dilton, Cheryl, Sabrina, Zelda, Della, Midge, Ethyl, Alex, Melody & Josie! As mewsual it is not only the fun & dramatic story but it is quite the fashion statement, and The Pussycats’ costumes appurr on a few pages! The poignant 20 page tale  of the 32 page issue was written & drawn by Dan Parent, inked by Rich Koslowski, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored by Digikore Studios! Nyow to conclude the comics & manga portion of the show, but we have one last comment purrtaining to the Archie-

the catgirls:

WE WANT TO SEE MORE OF STAR, NYA!

We will be right back with the–

Ilyana:

Those Olympic signs, the cute Shark Bands ad with Sage Erickson, and the gorgeous theatrical movie posters for Brave! Speaking of the movies, nyow it is time for Trini-chan to start our

Movie & DVD Reviews

with her review of Brave!

Trini-chan:

We like Pixar movies a lot, and although Cars 2 was perhaps our least favorite, we were eagerly anticipating Brave with much enthusiasm! The plot focuses on the delightful tomboy Scottish princess Merida who would rather have fun at the archery, riding, climbing & exploring more than the traditional female domestic chores which her mom is grooming, so there is the mother- daughter struggle!

Meanwhile her father is hosting the gathering of the four clans at his castle, with the intention of marrying Merida to the top suitor, but she is not down with that and wants to chose her own lifestyle & pursuits! She flees from the clans’ competion & her mom’s arguments, and follows the will o’ wisps into the mystical forest where she meets the witch and barters for a magickal spell to change her fate!

That sets up the secondary plot for the latter half of the movie, in which she has to “bear” the responsibility for the trouble which is “bruin”! In fact, it almost feels like two different stories, and I preferred the earlier part of the movie which focused more on Merida’s normal lifestyle, more than the latter supernatural incidents. The climactic scenes also seemed a bit more intense than other Pixar stories!

The animation is superb and Merida is my favorite part of the movie! She is brilliantly voiced by Kelly MacDonald! The rest of the voice cast is outstanding too, including Emma Thompson as her Queen mom, Billy Connolly as her King dad, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coletrane & Kevin McKidd as the other lords, and Julie Walters as the witch! The movie has a great musical score by Patrick Doyle too!

The character designs & scenic art are gorgeous, and the story has the mix of the character development, intense action, zany comedy & poignant drama. Make sure to sit through to the very end of the credits for the bonus scene! Although it is not among my favoritest Pixar movies, I liked it more than Cars 2! I guess that will do it for my review, so I will turn The Mew over to Jenjen for her review of-

Prometheus!

Jeannie:

Arigato. We have been quite curious with the anticipation for years as we awaited director Ridley Scott’s return to the Alien series with this purrequel, hoping the series would get the great boost since the very disappointing Alien vs Predator: Requiem. I do not wish to spoil much of the plot, but this latest film is the purrequel set decades purrior to the 1979 Alien film, so the character of Ellen Ripley is not in this movie, as the title space ship travels to the planet in search of answers to great mysteries.

It purrvides information purrtaining to the origin of the xenomorphs and the large horseshoe shaped type of ships akin to the derelict in the first two films. The movie looks quite gorgeous, from the landscapes to the supurrbly designed ships. The purrduction values and the mecha designs are my favorite aspect of the movie. The cinematography & visual FX are grand, and fortunately the camera work & editing are free from the annoying crash zooms, shakey cams & speed rampings.

Unfortunately the film is so extremely rushed that too many magnificent shots, such as the ship in orbital appurroach and in atmospheric descent are far too fleeting glimpses, not lingering nearly long enough and thus diminish the sense of awe & wonder I’d hoped for. The cast is compurrised of fine actors, especially Noomi Rapace as scientist Elizabeth Shaw, Charlize Theron as the corpurrate mission commander Meredith Vickers, & Michael Fassbender as David the artificial human.

However, in my opinion another flaw of the film is that it is very weak on the character development, especially compurred to the first four films of the series. Shaw & Fassbender seem to have the only truly substantial roles in the film. While I appurreciate how certain aspects of the plot were still ambiguous, the film is not smart enough, too many unlikable characters do stupid things which add to the purrilous jeopurrdy, although the creature designs, the gore FX, make up and stunts are quite good.

The meteorological aspects of the plot, characters’ wilderness survival skills & tech, archaeological site purreservation, forensic analysis & contamination purrocedures were quitei nadequate to say the least. The mythology is certainly elaborated upon, yet too much was crammed into too short & rushed a film. Plenty of intergalactic mysteries remain to be explored though; given that the Prometheus lands on a moon designated as LV-233, but the moon visited in Alien and Aliens was LV-426.

There are purredictable plot points which seem recycled from the first film, although it was nice to hear cues from the late Jerry Goldsmith’s Alien score during a purrticular scene. The film’s score is fine, but not as impurressive as those of the first 3 films. Prometheus is not nearly as good as Alien or Aliens, and although nothing in this film angers me quite like the first 5 minutes of Alien 3 (eg the offing Newt, Hicks & Bishop), it lacks the powerful drama and the great character scenes of Alien 3.

Compurred to Alien: Ressurrection, Prometheus is not as fun and lacks the depth of the characters, but it is the more beautiful, fresher film. I think it is better movie than either of the Alien vs Predator movies, especially the regrettable Alien vs Predator: Requiem. I have only the 2D version of Prometheus, so I cannot comment upon the 3D version. To conclude my review, I will give Prometheus the grade of C, but nyow here is Bun to tell us about another woman’s alien encounters in the

Sarah Jane Adventures Complete Fifth Season DVD

Bun:

Arigato Jen! The Sarah Jane Adventures, was the spin-off of the BBC TV series Doctor Who, starring Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, the reporter who investigates the paranormal incidents. This was a favorite show of ours and we were quite sad when the actress passed away last year at the young age of 63.

Created by Russell T Davies, it was such  a wonderful TV show with a great cast, writing, sets, locations, photography, music, costumes & FX! Sarah Jane lives in a nice house on 13 Bannerman Road, Ealing, London, England; she drives a Green Nissan Figaro, and has several gadgets such as her sonic lipstick device.

Joining her adventures are the companions of  her adopted genius son Luke (Tommy Knight), his pal Clyde Langer (Daniel Anthony), neighbor Rani Chandra (Anjli Mohindra), the Xylok super computer named Mr. Smith (voiced by Alexander Armstrong), and the occasionally seen robot dog K-9 (voiced by John Leeson)

K-9 is mentioned & shown in a quick flashback, but does not appear in any new scenes for season 5. Other recurring characters include Rani’s mom Gita (Mina Anwar) & dad Haresh (Ace Bhatti), Clyde’s mom Carkla (Jocelyn Jee Esien), Professor Rivers (Floella Benjamin), and the mysterious man with the parrot!

Season 5 was also special because it introduced the wonderful recurring character Sky (Sinead Michael)! When she is introduced in the season opening episode “Sky” she is the alien baby with electrical powers pursued by other aliens, but she quickly ages to 12, and wants to stay with Sarah Jane, so she is adopted!

It also starred the Metalkind alien, Christine Stephan-Daly as his enemy Miss Myers, Gavin Brocker as Caleb, and Floella Benjamin returning as Professor Rivers! It was written by Phil Ford, directed by Ashley Way & produced by Brian Minchin, who were also responsible for the next episode “The Curse of Clyde Langer”

The catgirl critics were delighted with the opening rain of fish, heehee! However, that phenomenon was not a good omen for Clyde though, who was cursed by the sinister sentient totem pole in the museum! It also starred Sara Houghton as Dr. Madigan and Lily Loveless as the homeless girl Ellie who befriends Clyde.

With the unexpected passing of Elizabeth Sladen, it was the very short season of only 3 episodes. Luke returns home to visit from college to meet his sister Sky in the third and final episode “The Man Who Never Was” which was written by Gareth Roberts, directed by Joss Agnew and produced by Brian Minchin.

It stars Edyta Budnik as Adriana, Dan Starkey as Plark, Peter Bowles as Lionel, James Dreyfuss as Harrison & Mark Ailken as mysterious Mr. Serf, whose computer company is up to suspicious activities! The 10th Doctor & K-9 appear in the flashback montage. The 3 episodes total about 156 minutes on the single disk DVD.

The widescreen video aspect ratio is 16×9 enhanced, the audio is in English Dolby digital stereo, and the optional English subtitles are the bold White sans serif font, with the fine Black outline. Prior to the main menu are the front- loaded trailers for the Doctor Who Complete Sixth Season DVD and the Primeval Volume 2 DVD.

It was such a bittersweet emotional roller coaster for us crying the sad tears as we watched Sarah Jane’s monologues which opened & concluded the season, so we had to paws the video a couple of times. Also included on the DVD is the 19 minute special feature of “Return to Bannerman Road: Remembering Elisabeth Sladen.

The remembrances include Anjli, Daniel, script editor Gary Russell who revisit the house, and 11th Doctor Matt Smith who fondly chat about Sladen, along with clips from news shows that announced her passing, scenes from her show and a few of her Doctor Who appearances with the 3rd, 4th, 10th & 11th Doctors.

Elisabeth Sladen is not the only star from Liverpool, England who we wish to purraise today, as there is the certain famous fab four of John, Paul, George & Ringo whose characters also thwarted the bizarre invaders! Nyow here is Becca to tell all about that in her review of the

The Beatles Yellow Submarine DVD!

Becca:

Arigato, Jen! The iconic 1968 animated Beatles mewsical Yellow Submarine has been on our DVD wish list for a while but it was finally re-issued on NTSC Region 0 standard DVD in this nice slipcase edition, containing the single disk of the movie plus special features, and several purrinted treats!

For those who came in late, the psychedelic movie purrtains to the rock group The Beatles who are asked by the submarine captain to help save this homeland of Pepperland which has been conquered by the evil creatures called the Blue Meanies. The Beatles board the sub for the strange voyage!

The film’s soundtrack includes Beatles songs such as Yellow Submarine, Eleanor Rigby, When I’m 64, Nowhere Man, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, All You Need is Love, Northern Song, Hey Bulldog, It’s All Too Much, and All Together Now, and the magnificent orchestral score by Sir George Martin!

It is not included with the DVD, but I should mention that there are different versions of the soundtrack CD. The earlier editions featured The Beatles songs and the George Martin score, but later editions of the CD replaced the score with more Beatles songs, so be careful if you are shopping for the CD!

The 90 minute movie has been restored & purrsented in its original screen aspect ratio of 1.66:1. with quite a few choices of audio & subtitles. You can select the English language in the original mono, stereo, DTS 5.1 surround, or audio commentary by the film’s purrduction supurrvisor John Coates!

The other spoken language choices are German & Italian 5.1, and the optional subtitles are in English, English SDH, German, German SDH, French, Italian, Spanish , Portuguese, Swedish, Finnish, Polish, Danish & Norwegian! I must say that the restored movie looks and sounds quite fabulous!

The special features include the 7 min 40 sec “The Beatles Mod Odyssey” look at the making of the film, the 3 min 40 sec theatrical trailer, the gallery of 29 photos, pencil drawings for the “All You Need is Love” sequence, and storyboards for the Sea of Monsters, Battle of the Monsters, and Peppurrland!

Those storyboards are purrticularly interesting, because they depict alternate monster designs and an alternate ending! The unused monster designs look more like dinosaurs than the bizarre creature designs they settled upon! Topping off the special features are the 11.5 minutes of brief intermews!

Those are widdle chats by several of the film’s purrsonnel including actor Paul Angelis who voiced Ringo, John Clive who voiced John, co-animation director Jack Stokes, key animator David Livesay, co-screenwriter Erich Segal, and Milliscent McMillan who was the assistant to art director Heinze Edelmann!

The DVD packaging is quite attractive, in the slip case similar to the packaging of The Beatles Help DVD! The inner sleeve slides out and opens to reveal the disk on the right side, sturdily clenched in the clear plastic inner tray, and on the left side is the pocket containing the 7″ x 4.75″ purrinted materials!

Those include the sheet of 10 stickers, the 4 images of John, Paul, George & Ringo’s characters on the clear sheets, and the 16 page color booklet of widdle photos, illustrations, text! I wish the intermews were a bit longer, but I was so happy to get Yellow Submarine! That is all of our movie & DVD reviews, but after the break the DVD topic will continue in

Our Semi – Annual DVD Wish List!

(snip)(one final short break later…)

Elizabeth:

Welcome Back! Here is our semi-annual list for the titles that we hope will soon be commercially released in the USA on Region One, NTSC Standard DVD- not just the Blu Ray, nya! We would like these movies & TV shows to be intact with the original mewsic & songs, and the movies in anamorphic widescreen where applicable!

We purrfur foreign titles to be in their native language with English subtitles, but an English dubbed audio track would be fine as an additional option! Also, we would purrfur it if the DVD packaging is not too large or fancy as to raise the purrice, or not easily fit on the shelves with the rest of our regular sized DVD cases & boxes!

Becca:

It would also be nice if the standard DVDs had plenty of extra features like they used to, and are not scrimped compurred to the Blu Rays! This list doesn’t tend to include recent releases that we’re purretty sure will be released here on DVD, but it does include the TV shows & movies that we’ve been waiting for for a while!

In addition to animated & live – action TV shows and theatrical films, we have expanded the wish list to include the internet webisodes, and highly purraised famous amateur & fan films & shorts that we wish could come to the business arrangement to be officially licensed for the purrchase! Nyow here are Jenjen & Ilyana to start the list!
