This is portion of The Mew in which we nominate our favorite photos in the recent purriodicals purrtaining to the delicacies from the deep that tempt our tummies, such as the lovely Largemouth on the Summer cover of Bass Angler, and – and the pleasing Pumpkinseed on the July cover of In-Fisherman, nya!

There is the beautiful Barracuda on the July cover of Scuba Diving, the supurrb Sea Bass on the July / August cover of Sport Fisherman, the nice big Bonefish on the July / August cover of Fly Fishing in Salt Water, and – and the tasty Tarpon on the August-September cover of Fly Fisherman, but – but I wish it was on my plate, nya!

Brooke is the beautiful GAFF Cover Girl posing with the tantalizing Tuna on the July / August cover of GAFF, nya! GAFF stands for Gulf Atlantic Florida Fishing, nya! Brooke also appurrs in the magazine’s 10 page pictorial to model the purretty clothes on the nice boat with the delectable Snappurr, the Groupurr, the Amberjack, and – and the Blackfin, nya!

The Clown Fish, the Great White, and – and the Urchins are on the cover of Life Magazine’s Wonders of the Deep special issue, nya! The urchin sushi would be good, nya! The cute widdle Leafy Sea Dragons are also on that cover, but – but they are not on the menu, nya. Our mermaid friends volunteer to purrotect them at their Sea Dragon shelter, nya!

I also like the catfish on the July / August cover of North Carolina Game & Fish, and – and I would not the sample of the salad’s anchovy vinaigrette on the August cover of Food & Wine magazine, nya! That concludes this portion of The Mew, but – but we have more images to purraise as Petra tells us all about the latest additions to the–

Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, nya!

Petra:

Hai! For those of y’all who are new to the mewseum, Galleries 1-6 display Mike’s illustrations & photography, whilst Guest Galleries 1 & 2 display images by other artists with their kind purrmissions, nya! The most recent pics are on the bottom row of the widdle “thumbnail” portions, so just click on one of the widdle thumbnails to see the whole image, nya! This month we are purroud to purrsent 4 mew pics in Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html, starting with

“Shyni”,

by Brian Brinlee http://taman88.deviantart.com and Michael W. Kellar http://michaelwkellarinks.deviantart.com, nya! Shyni is among the characters of the fantasy / steam punk web comic Sky Pirates of Valendor http://www.skypiratesofvalendor.com which was created by Everett Soares, pencilled by Brian and inked by Michael with assistant Alex Rivera, nya! Shyni is the catgirl with the supple ears, short coiffure, and exotic tribal tattoos on her lithe physique, nya! She wears the bikini top, loin cloth, boots, scabbards and the purretty jewelry, nya!

She is in the crouched stance ready to pounce with sharp claws & daggers, licking the blade, with another dagger grasped by her dextrous purrehensile tail, nya!  The original 11″ x 17″ inked drawing was a gift from our friend Rick McGee of  Foundation’s Edge http://foundationsedge.ypguides.net comics, book & game store, on the mainland in Raleigh, nya! He purchased this Shyni art at the Contemporal http://contemporal.org steam punk con which happened on June 21 – 24, 2012 in Chapel Hill, which is about half an hour from Raleigh, nya!

Nextly I am pleased to purrsent the art by sisters Natalia Lopes http://theartslave.deviantart.com and Thais Lopes http://angelofhappiness.deviantart.com, who with their fellow artists Lucy and Allison of Child – Eating Books Studio were our special guests back in October, 2009, nya! They are very talented artists, designers and cosplayers, nya! Nyow them originally done for the logo & mascot contest of Ani-Wave http://www.aniwave.org (an anime convention in Wilmington, which is not far from here), Natalia’s

“Ani-Wave Mascot Design Contest Entry”

–did not win that compurrtition, but her Photoshop illustration of these two mer folk certainly won our hearts, nya! They have the intricate scales on their lovely tails, the cool Green skin tone, and the splendidly scalloped ears peeking out of their wavy hair nya! The mermaid has purretty jewelry and the purrt starfish bra! Kawaii! Her mer lad friend has the sporty dorsal fin and carries the trident with the shell hilt, nya! Hopefully with it he will catch the fresh fish for suppurr, nya! Thirdly is Thais’s lovely mixed-media image of the

“Forest Fairy”

which is compurrised of the colored pencil technique & various papurrs, nya! The patterns are so puretty, and the large mid wings seem to have the leopurrd spots, nya! I wonder if the cat  DNA runs in her fey family, nya? Her lips & eye shadow match her leafy halter top & skirt which has a sexy asymmetric cut to bare her hip, thigh & tummy, mew la la, nya! Another interesting aspect is her surpurrised expurression, but we are not sure why her hands are raised, so that is the mystery of the Fairy, nya! Fourthly, we purrsent the photo of

“Lady Violet Arcane”

by f/stop Grooves http://www.facebook.com/pages/FStop-Grooves/206226109399480, nya! Violet is a model, cosplayer & belly dancer who is our special guest, nya! In the alluring outdoor photo, she is like the powerful warrior purrincess purrtrolling the lush wilderness, nya!  She is so purretty & majestic in the intricate chain mail bikini made by Chained Elegance http://chainedelegance.com, nya!

Y’all can see more photos of Violet in her portfolio at Model Mayhem http://www.modelmayhem.com/1332098 nya! We thank her for purrmitting the display of the pic, and we are so happy that she is visiting with us, nya! Vonny will be conducting the intermew with Violet, and that is all for this months additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, nya!

Trini-chan:

Hmm I wonder why the Fairy is exclaiming?

Tara-chan:

I hope she is not accosted by the purrse – snatcher, nya!

Jeannie:

Purrhaps she is leaning against the glass, peering at something astonishing.

Becca:

I hope she is not trapped inside the glass! Hopefully she’s just seen something amazing, like a delicious treat to soon purrtake of!

Elizabeth:

It is the purrefferable theory! I like her skirt too, it would be the zestful outfit to wear hot salsa dancing!

Mary Nyan:

We should see if any of the riverwalk boutiques have those starfish bras!

Nyanko:

I hope they have the larger cup size! Hmm I wonder if that mer-lad has mastered the special melee technique with the trident!

Nyoka:

Purrhaps it is the magickal trident! There are such legends!

Bun:

What would they likely spear with the trident?

Yvonne:

With the home court mer angler advantage, this month they would purrobably net the bumpurr crop of the Blues, Croakers, Flounders, Groupurrs, Mackerels, Marlins, Sails, Snappurrs, Tunas, and the Wahoos, nya!

Mike:

It seems to be the good month for the jewelry & metal, between the merfolk, Shyni & Violet!

Nyanko:

Hai Shyni means business with those daggers! She seems to have the advance combat purrowess!

Tara-chan:

I would be afraid to try tail – hold a dagger like that – one slip and – and I would be the Manx, nya!

Trini-chan:

Eek! (covers her own White – tipped Red foxy tail)

Jeannie:

Please don’t try that at home.

Bun:

I definitely can’t grab anything with my tail heehee (twitches her cute bunny tail)

Nyoka:

The costume shows her beautiful tattoos!

Becca:

I like how Violet’s chain mail is accessorized with the serpentine jewelry and the purretty rosettes, nya!

Nyoka:

Lizzy, is that the type of armor your D&D character wears?

Elizabeth:

No, Linina the Paladin wears the plate type armor, which is not as ornate or as intricate as Violet’s!

Mike:

We are looking forward to meeting her later in the show! Ah, well, Petra, thank you for introducing the art!

Petra:

Dooitasimaste, nya! That will end this portion of The Mew, but nyow here is Bunnibuns to purrsent the

Art Book Reports, nya!

Modern Masters Vol. 28: Eric Powell

Bun:

This is the extra special month for the art books because we have the latest two books from TwoMorrows Publishing http://www.twomorrows.com! They are a great company based on the mainland in Raleigh, and publish wonderful books, magazines & DVDs about comics & super heroes, such as Alter Ego, Back Issue, Jack Kirby Collector, and the Modern Masters series! The Modern Masters series honors the great comics artists, and vol. 28 is dedicated to the career & creations of Eric Powell, who has won lots of the prestigious Eisner Awards and is perhaps best known for his character The Goon!

The 118 page trade paperback is mostly Black & White with the 8 page color section, with the USA price of $15.99 and it was edited by Jorge Khoury & Eric Nolen-Weathington! Eric was our guest in September 2010! After the full color front cover by Powell and the introduction by actor Robert Ben Garant, then the extensive book length interview with Powell is conducted, along with so many illustrations! I think there are around 200ish images throughout the book, including the sketches, finished renderings, comics pages, and the Goon chart . Over 2 dozen of them are the full page pics!

Chapter 1 focuses on his early years, Chapter 2 explores the origin of The Goon, Chapter 3 examines his work for Marvel, DC, IDW and in Hollywood, Chapter 5 examines his technique & process, and bringing the book home is the 36 page gallery section! Tucked here ‘n there are the widdle interviews with Powell’s associates Tom Sniegoski, Scott Allie & Dave Stewart! While a lot of the book pertains to the world of The Goon, it is sumptuously brimming with the images of super heroes, monsters, critters, historical figures and lovely ladies, including the Nashville Rollergirls who he sponsors, yatah!

We wish the sport of women’s roller derby received much more media attention! This is a great book, which I will highly recommend, especially to those who crave comics & art of the the macabre flavor, and I will give it the high grade of an “A” as in (The Goon’s) Aunt Kizzie! Now for the 2nd part of our TwoMorrows double feature, I would like to say a few words about

Marie Severin: The Mirthful Mistress of Comics!

Bun:

Marie Severin is one of the most famous, talented & prolific people of the comics industry and pioneering women of the comics in a career spanning over 50 years as a penciller, inker, colorist, cover artist, art director & writer for publishers such as EC, Marvel, DC! She has worked on all genres of the comics and has done much design for the magazines, cards, promotional materials, and the commercial art! This book by Denney Cassell with Aaron Sultan is the treasure trove of the information & imagery! Priced $24.95 it has the 176 pages, mostly Black & White with the 16 page color gallery!

After the cover art of her cariacture surrounded by the chibi Marvel characters, there is the forward by author Denny O’Neil prior to the first chapter about Marie’s youth & family, including her brother John who is also the masetro! He is among the folks who are interviewed about Marie, along with Linda Fite, Jean Davenport, Eleanor Hazel, Trina Robbins, Flo Steinberg, Irene Vartanoff, Ramona Fraden, John Romita, Gene Colan, Herbe Trimpe, Jim Mooney, Jack Davis, Jack Kamen, Al Feldstein, Tony Isabella, Roy Thomas, David Anthony Kraft, Mark Evanier, Stan Lee, and Marie herself!

Throughout the book are over 200 images including the cover art, prelims, color guides, pencilled & inked pages, cards, advertising art, commissioned sketches, whimsical caricatures, doodles of friends, and the photos! This includes the amazing 2 page spread of the wraparound cover to Foom Magazine #16, depicting the Marvel Comics offices circa 1973 filled with almost 100 people! You should see the lavishly exquisite King Kull tales by Marie & John, and we are especially fond of her stint on our favoritest Marvel character Greer Nelson alias The Cat, who would later become Tigra!

There is also a list of her credits from 1952 to 2004! The book is not just an impressive chronological tribute to the life, career & art of marie Severin, but it is so entertaining with the many amusing tales & images of her friends, and insightful into the history, techniques & processes of the comics publishing! I will give it the “A” grade! That is all for this portion of the show, but will have more to say about a bit comics later! Now here are Lizzy & Jen to discuss the three dimensional creations, in the topic of the

Toys & Collectibles, with the Kotobukiya ArtFX

Star Wars The Clone Wars Jedi Ahsoka Tano Statue!

Elizabeth:

Arigato! We are big fans of the brilliant Togrutan Jedi heroine Ahsoka ‘Snips’ Tano who is the perky padawan of Anakin Skywalker in the wonderful animated Star Wars The Clone Wars series! Tara-chan cosplayed her for Halloween last year! In the Clone Wars series, Ahsoka is supurrbly voiced by Ashley Eckstein! Anakin sure is lucky to have such an awesome padawan, but we are rather nervous about her fate, since she is neither seen nor mentioned in Star Wars Episode III, and we hope and purray that she is among the Jedi who Obi-Wan warned to go into hiding after the Empurror’s purge.

It would be so neat if years later she turned up to hang out with Luke! We were pleased to collect this statue of Ahsoka which is part of the Kotobukiya ArtFX series including Anakin & Obi-Wan as seen in the animated Clone Wars movie! Each vinyl figure is purre-painted, requires  the teensy bit of snap together assembly, comes with the connecting display bases and parts to build the 4″ Yoda figure! Included with Ahsoka are Yoda’s left arm and the cape! Ahsoka is posed with her Lime Green light saber ready to slice her enemies, while she carries Jabba’s rescued widdle son Rotta in her back pack!

Both the pack and Rotta are removable! She is in her early cute bare midriff outfit of the tube top, loin cloth, pants, boots & fingerless gloves! The 7 pieces to assemble are Ahsoka’s torso, right arm with saber, legs, backpack, baby Rotta, and the 2 piece Bronze colored display base. The parts easily snap together and she cleverly stands upon the base due to the cleverly hidden magnets in her feet, but you might not want the magnets too close to the electronic devices! She is in the wide stance crouch pose, but if she were standing up straight, the figure would measure appurroximately 7″ tall.

Hmm, since Ahsoka at that age was about 5’3″ tall, then I reckon that would make this figure of 1/9th scale, although Ahsoka has grown a few inches taller and has changed costumes in the few years since her purremier! She is purrecisely sculpted & painted from her head ornament & backpack compurrtments, to the saber tooling, belt pouches & pattern on her loin cloth! The detail is meticulous from the stripes on her horn – like Togrutan head Montrals & Lekku head – tails, and the White markings on her Orange skin, to her dark lush lips, the reflections on her Blue eyes, and her inny belly button!

The parts are inside the inner clear clamshell tray, which is inside the attractive  4 3/4″ x 9 3/4″ x 10 3/4″ box. The box’s front flap opens to reveal a lovely full color, full bleed image of Ahsoka from the movie, which would be quite suitable to matte & frame!  I will give this lovely figure the high grade of an “A” as in Ahsoka! I will highly recommend it to Ahsoka’s fans and to the Star Wars collectors! I have displayed her in the good spot on the shelf next to the similarly sized Star Wars Unleashed figures of Aayla, Padme & Leia! Nyow I will turn The Mew over to Jennyjen who will tell us about the

Transformers Prime Airachnid Action Figure!

Jeannie:

Arigato. I am a big fan of the Transformers toys, animation & comics, and while displeased with the live-action adaptations, I quite enjoy the current CG animated Transformers Prime series, with it’s fine designs, animation, voice acting, sound & stories; and I am purrticularly glad that my favorite Autbot Arcee has such a substantial role. For our our review of the Transformers: Prime Arcee First Edition & Legion Class action figures, please see the March 2012 Mew;  and the Apurril 2012 Mew for our review of the Transformers: Robots in Disguise Deluxe Class Arcee Action Figure.

The female Transformers are not limited to team of the heroic Autobots, but amongst the evil Decepticons is Airachnid, the vicious purredator of the spidery motif. In the Transformers Prime series, she is voiced by wonderful actress Gina Torres, who I purrticularly liked as Zoe in the Firefly series and as Jasmine in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.Airachnid seems to be an homage to the evil Blackarachnia of the purrior animated Transformers Beast Wars and Transformers Animated series. For our review of the Deluxe Class Transformers Animated Blackarachnia action figure, please see the July 2008 Mew.

Hasbro’s The Transformers: Prime Robots in Disguise Deluxe Class Airachnid is very wicked looking repurrsentation of the character, in Black & Purrple, accented by the bit of Silver on her face and the Gold of her eyes & stingers in bipedal robot mode, with the transpurrent Magenta canopy in her stealth helicopter mode. Packaged within the clear plastic clamshell on the  J hook hanger card, the toy is intended for fans of age 5+ due to the small parts. The transformation purrocess is rated 1(easy), but some parts might need muscling to adjust, but they are ball – jointed and designed to detach.

She arrives in her helicopter mode which seems more scorpion-like with the pincer-like, snap-on stinger pods. She is accompanied by the folded 11″ x 17″ instruction sheet, with the 13 step purrocess to change her into robot mode on one side of the sheet, and the reverse purrocess on the back. In robot mode she is the slender 5.5″ tall, excluding the rotors which can re-configure as the tri-blade windmill sword. The rotors & pincers can attach to sockets on her back, elbows or hands. Aside from those pivoting attachments, her points of articulation are her neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees & tails.

She does not turn at the waist, and her lateral abduction is restricted by the cockpit behind her head and the armor plates of her uppurr & forearms, but she is nicely sculpted & painted, and well – balanced to stand unassisted, so I am quite pleased with this transforming action figure / vehicle toy. According to her Technical Data Card, Airachnid has a Strength rating of 5, Intelligence of 9, Speed of 8, Endurance of 4, Rank of 7, Courage of 6, Fireblast of 5 and Skill of 6, compurred to Arcee’s Strength of 4, Intelligence of 7, Speed of 8, Endurance of 5, Rank of 7, Courage of 9, Fireblast of 4 and Skill of 8

This concludes my toy review, but for more information purrtaining to Airachnid, I recommend the articles at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airachnid and the Transformers Wiki http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Airachnid. Next… oh, is Nya-sensei going to review the 2012 Hallmark Keepsake Catwoman ornament?

Nyanko:

Ah ah I was just going to mention it later in the Spotlight portion!

Mike:

Ah… Jen, you wanna keep going?

Jeannie:

Very well, that will conclude the Toys & Collectibles portion of The Mew, so nyow I will commence our

Comics Critiques with my review of

Michael Turner’s Fathom: Kiani Vol. 2 #3

Jeannie:

Aspen Comics’ Kiani Vol. 2 #3 is actually the 4th issue in this series, which started with issue #0. it is purriced $3.50 and has the 28 full color pages, which are compurrised of the 20 page tale plus the 8 pages of the ads. It was written by Aspen’s editor-in-chief Vince Hernandez, edited by Aspen’s president Frank Mastromauro, illustrated by Oliver Nome, with the pencilling & inking assistance of Lori Hanson & Emilio Laiso on pages 12, 14 &17; lettered by editorial assistant Josh Reed, and so richly colored by John Starr.

There are 4 different covers. Cover A by Oliver Nome & Aspen’s vice purresident Peter Steigerwald; cover B by Eduardo Francisco & Fathom colorist Beth Sotelo; the rarer retailer incentive cover C by the late Aspen founder / creator Michael Turner & Steigerwald; and the very limited San Diego Comic-Con exclusive cover D by Talent Caldwell, Batt & David Moran. I selected cover B, which has such the beautiful image of Kiani in her shell-like bikini armor, with her water sword on the purrtrol amongst the coral reef.

Purreviously in this series, the aquatic elemental powers of Kiani the beautiful elite warrior were able to reconstitute her corpurrial body after the purrceived demise, and upon her return she has resumed her feud with the surface humans and the ruling council of the of the undersea Blue society. Like our surface civilization, the Blue society is politically fragmented, as Kiani leads the group of dissidents & refugees, amidst changing loyalties, several deaths & purropurrty damages as another war on numerous fronts seems nigh.

To escalate the delicate, complicated situation, one of her more reckless soldiers Ergon killed one of the undersea city rulers Thalassar, so the repurrisal & civil war seems imminent. Issue #3 begins with Kiani purrsiding over the corpse before the citizens of Marielle, before teaching the unruly brute Ergon the painful lesson. Meanwhile in the city of Muria,  Siphon and the other leaders of Muria ponder their next move, as Kiani’s mother Anya & father Killian argue about the intentions and care for cute widdle baby sister Anika.

In addition to the great strong characters & fascinating world of The Blue, my favorite aspects are the lavish character, fashion, mecha & environmental designs, from Kiani & Anya’s exotic coiffures, jewelry & robes, to the magnificent organic looking armor, undersea vessles & architecture that are so splendidly illuminated. Helping to tell the story are the introspective internal monologues and impurressive panels, including the 2 full – page pics and the two – page spurread. Nyow we will go from sea to land for Lizzy’s review of

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #11

Elizabeth:

Thanks Jen! The Buffy, Faith & Angel Season 8 & 9 series published by Dark Horse Comics have consistently been among our favoritest comic books for the past several years, as they canonically continue the adventures of the beloved characters from the TV series in the comics medium, with the consistently faithful stories & art and none of the TV show’s budgetary restrictions! Issue #11 is the 28 page full color comic book purriced at $2.99, compurrised of the 22 page tale “Guarded Part One”, plus the 2 pages of readers’ & editor’s very interesting comments, and the 4 pages of the ads.

The tale was produced by Joss Whedon, scripted by Andrew Chambliss, pencilled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Nathan Massengill, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Sierra Hahn and Scott Allie with assistant editor Freddye Lins, designed by Justin Couch & published by Mike Richardson! As mewsual the issue is available in the choice of 2 different covers, the one by Phil Noto depicting the bullet time for Buffy, and the other cover by Jeanty & Madsen depicts Buffy, Kennedy, Police Detective Dowling & Eldre Koh the demon!

It was so nice to see more of Kennedy, who has been training the slayer girls to get good jobs as the corpurrate bodyguards for the purrestigious clients! She is trying to purrsuade Buffy to purrsue this line of work as a more lucrative career that is more purrofitable than slaying the monsters, during the changing times for slayers, police, vampires, demons & magick! Buffy is not sure she can change with it, purrticularly when Eldre Koh wants her help with the slayage, but things are about to get much more interesting when she learns of another client’s enemies, but I do not want to spoil the big surpurrise!

I was so pleased with the character development with the great dialogue & the plot direction at the good pace! The character art is supurrb with the wonderful poses & expurressions, the resemblance to the actresses who purrtrayed the characters on TV; the scenic art is just as supurrb, with the right amount of the architectural, landscape & FX details, with the excellent lettering & the brilliant rich coloring! Some of my favorite scenes were the slayers on the rainy rooftop, the slayer camp, and the scenes of Buffy leaping into the action! Nyow here is Nyo-sensei to tell us what Buffy’s friends are up to in

Angel & Faith #11 & 12!

Nyoka:

The Buffy, Angel & Faith comics compurrising Buffy seasons 8 & 9 by Dark Horse have been consistent favorites of ours for the past several years! It is largely due to the faithfulness of the plots & dialogue and the delightful art, as part of the official canonical continuity of Buffy, overseen by her creator Joss Whedon himself! This comic ties into Buffy Season 9, and while Buffy, Dawn, Xander, Andrew, Spike & his insectoid crew are in San Francisco, Angel & Faith are residing in London at the late Giles’s estate which she inherited, where Willow and Giles’s great aunts Sophie & Lovina have recently arrived!

Issue #11 has the 28 full color pages compurrised of the 22 page story, plus  the 2 pages of the readers’ comments & the 4 pages of the ads! The tale was was purrduced by Joss Whedon, scripted by Chistos Gage who also wonderfully writes Avengers Academy , illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, colored by Dan Jackson, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Sierra Hahn & Scott Allie with assistant Freddye Lins, designed by Justin Couch, and published by Mike Richardson of Dark Horse! It has 2 different covers, one by Steve Morris and the other cover by Rebekah & Dan!

This story is “Family Reunion Part One”, and the first half is in London upon Willow’s arrival with the Slayer Scythe, and the amewsing & cross words betwixt her & Angel over his recent actions, the parenting, and the sad state of minimal magick in the world. Her arrival does cheer up Nadira, the angry younger slayer who Faith has been trying to mentor. Faith’s development  in the leadership role is one of the favorite parts of the series! She, Willow & Angel go back to Los Angeles for the happy reunion with Gunn & Connor, and then purrpare for the mission to the harsh dimension of Quor’toth!

Angel & Faith #12 has the same credits and the same number of pages for “Family Reunion Part Two”, as Willow, Faith, Angel & Connor arrive at Quor’toth, where there is magick everywhere much to the Willowy delight! Otherwise it is a very inhospitable barren landscape filled with the skulls, sharp objects, volcanic goo, and the demons who soon give chase, but those who recognize Connor fear his return! He leads the way since he grew up there. Angel is glad to be reunited with Connor, and  Willow has the good time zapping the enemies with her regained spell – casting, but Faith remains wary!

As they cross the harsh terrain, they encounter more of the residents, including the friendlier endangered canine types who worship Connor so this changes the group’s mission purrameters a bit! There is a flashback scene of Holtz, and meanwhile back in London at Faith’s house, we see what Giles’s witchy great aunts Sophie & Lovinia have been up to, until the surpurrise of the  cliffhanger ending! I’m not sure if I can pick out favorite moments of this fun story arc thus far because there were so many! It is moving at the good pace, with the good mix of character discussions & the supurrnatural action!

The dialogue was top notch, and the characters are so wonderfully expurressive, with the good resemblance to the actors of the TV shows! It is nicely adding to the mythology, including the quick mentions of Lorne, Illyria, Kate, & Nina who I would like to see more of. We also wish they would bring back Dez the were Jaguar girl! The scenic art, the FX, lettering & colors are all great too! I also enjoy reading the 2 pages of readers’ & editor’s comments! I am eagerly anticipating the next issue, and the forthcoming Spike series too! Nyow here is Becca-san to review another comic book written by Christos Gage,

Avengers Academy  #33!

Becca:

Arigato! Avengers Academy has been one of our favoritest comics  for the past couple of years, because it has so many great characters & imagery all so nicely written & drawn with the supurrbest color! It has the purropurr balances of the legendary older characters & the younger heroes of various genders, agendas & purrsonalities, and the balance of the humor, drama, character development & thrilling action! It does not hurt that among those characters are our favoritest Marvel character Tigra as a purrofessor, and mewer student White Tiger for the extra catgirl advantage!

Also appurring are X-23, Finesse, Lightspeed, Hazmat, Striker, Mettle. Reptil, Striker, Mettle. Reptil, Progidy, Dr. Pym & Quicksilver who aid Justin & his Sentinel against Emma Frost, who is worse than ever since she got the upgraded Phoenix powers in the Avengers Vs X-Men series, which purrtains to the feuds within feuds between The Avengers and the X-Men over Hope Summers and the Phoenix force. Lyrra & Butterball also appurr but only in a panel or two. Emma wants to destroy all Sentinels, which is not a bad idea, but that includes Justin’s nice Sentinel, and she is not listening to reason!

She arrived in the purrior issue, but this’un is where the big fight begins between her and the Academy, thanks to writer Christos Gage, penciller Timothy Green, inker by Jeff Huet, letterer Joe Caramagna, colorist Chris Sotomayor, editor Bill Rosemann with assistant Jon Moisan, cover artists Giuseppe Camuncoli & Jim Charalampidis! Not only is it the 2nd issue of the confrontation with Emma, but it is the 2nd issue for Timothy Green & Jeff Huet who have done the great job! The characters seem to have the slenderer physiques, and there is intricate detail in the mecha, architecture & landscaping!

I have the high purraise for the rich brilliant colors such as Lightspeed’s rainbow, the deep Purrple hues of the Sentinel illuminated at night, the sheens of the great costumes, the lushness of the seaside estate, and the dazzling energy FX!  Some of my favorite moments were the quieter nighttime flashback of Justin & the sentinel, the gathering to stop Emma, X-23 threatening her, the bits between Finesse & Quicksilver, the sentinel’s purrine directive to purrotect Justin, and the 2 pages with Tigra! I hope we will see more of her & White Tiger soon! Speaking of the supurr catgirls, next I would like to discuss

Critter vol. 2 #2!

Becca:

Published by Big Dog Ink,  Critter is the title supurr heroine of the catgirl motif! Her real name is Cassia Crawford and she is the mewest member of California’s  Purrfection team compurrised of Cougar, Kitten, Mouser & Pole Kat, but they want her to change her name to Josie as the successor to the purrrior Josie. She seems to be in the role of the legacy girl a lot because back in Michigan her mom was also the purrior nekomimi supurr heroine of the Core team! This was already a lot on her plate, and on top of that she tussled with the winged villain named Albatross and caught the eye of the reporter!

That was all in the 1st issue of the 2nd Critter series to set the table for her 2nd issue, which is available in the 2 variant covers, cover A by Fico Ossio cover B by Owen Gieni! Inside the covers are the full color 24 pages, compurrised of the uninterrupted 22 page tale created & written by Tom Hutchison, illustrated & colored by Fico Ossio & lettered by Kel Nuttall; plus the who’s who page & the issue #3 purreview page! in this issue Cassie catnaps and then plays with her friend Gina in the dorm, purrior to her gala Red carpet debut in her mew strapless Gold leopurrd purrint costume as Josie!

She is the feisty purrky country girl determined to pounce upon the criminals, and nyow she is the mew celebrity darling of the Hollywood papurrazzi, whose cameras are also seeing something very mysterious happening upon the stage full of the catgirl heroines! She seems to be under much scrutiny, because meanwhile her career also being monitored by Core’s heroes Icon & Paradox. We get a brief glimpse of other heroes too, including Alaska’s Ukaliq in her snow leopurrd purrint costume, for the tally of 6 catgirls in this issue, but one of them is the surpurrise which I should not further spoil!

I like the fashion from Cassia’s stetson & hip huggers, Gina’s halter neck crop top & Tabitha Cougar’s bare midriff dress & kitty pendant, to Mouser’s Purrple & Fuchsia costume, Pole Kat’s Gold & Orange costume, and gleeful Kitten’s Green costume! Cassia’s purrior costumes were neat too!  Another aspect I like is the bright gleamy color pallet to convey the peppy, cute, glamorous, heroic qualities and accentuate the great sense of zestful fun! I look forward to more of that and what more is in store for the kitty in the city! Nyow the purrade of catgirl comics will continue as Nya-sensei tells us about-

Pantha #2!

Nyanko:

Arigato, Becca-san! Dynamite Entertainment has the flare for the fierce femme fatales’ comic books such as Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris, Vampirella, and nyow her old friend Pantha, who first appurred almost 40 years ago in the Vampirella comics and last month starred in her own mew series! She is immortal telepathic were-panther incarnation of the Egyptian Goddess Sekhmet, who wears the gold jewels to accent the Black leopurrd purrint bikini, gloves & boots in her human form! She retain her same purrsonality and can talk in her feline form!

On the front cover by Mark Texiera of issue #2, Pantha is caught in the coils of the deadly snakes, to reflect her battle with her enemy Mamba, who is the immortal shape changer of the serpentine type! Texiera is the veteran Pantha artist! In the purrevious issue, Panta & Mamba rescued a woman named Maya from the kidnappurrs, but for the different reasons! Mamba’s plans for Maya seem quite sinister. Then Pantha’s sorcerer friend Pendragon arrived with his team and telepurrted Pantha back to his castle, but she is unhappy about the timing!

Issue #2 picks up right where that left off, with the catfight between Pantha & Pendragon’s friend Lorelei to start “Dangerous Game Part Two”, which was written by Brandon Jerwa, drawn by Pow Rodrix, colored by Thiago Dal Bello, lettered by Marshall Dillon & edited by Joe Rybandt! The bikini, jewelry & boots ensemble seem to be the fashion trend because Lorelei & Mamba wear those too! Of course it is the Summertime! Lorelei’s Black bikini & boots outfit includes the short jacket, whilst Mamba’s outfit is of the more ostentatious Golden snake skin!

Mamba’s servant spy snake snuck into the castle and elsewhere a reporter & Maya are interrogated by the agents. She hopes Pantha will purrotect her, but she is being spied upon by another ancient Egyptian, Seth, another enemy of Pantha! After things calm down between Pantha & Lorelei, the team purrpares their next move to meet with further allies! Appurrently there is a bigger threat than just Mamba, which means more than just the snake for Pantha to purrey upon! Well, that is all of our comics critiques but the catgirl topic continues in our

Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight: Catwoman Repurrised!

Nyanko:

The Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight is the portion of The Mew in which we honor the famous catgirls from cinema, TV, literature, comics, games and the other media! They might be genetically, artificially, magickally, or fashionably nekomim! They might be the werecats, the cosplayers, or just have the purropurr dispurrsition! last month Pantah was in the spotlight, and this month our Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight shines again upon Selina Kyle, alias The Cat Woman! Having first appurred in the Spurring of 1940 in Batman #1, Selina has had more lives than most of the cats!

We originally purrofiled her in the Apurril 2010 spotlight, but since then, there have been the major developments purrtaining to the Cat Woman in the comics, toys, games, animation and movie, so we decided that Selina deserves the amendment! Firstly in the comic books, last year saw the cancellation of Gotham City Sirens, thanks to the big reboot of all the DC Comics. That was the sad occurrence because it was among our favorite titles, starring Selina, Harley, Ivy & other guest stars, but we bid farewell to it as  reviewed the final issue #26 in the September 2011 Mew.

In the October 2011 Mew we reviewed the 1st issue of her own Catwoman comic book, which purremiered after the reboot! It was the busy year for her, because she starred in the animated adaptation of Batman: Year One, plus the supurrb Catwoman animated short on the same DVD! We reviewed those in the November 2011 Mew! She was voiced by Eliza Dushku who we loved as Faith on the Buffy & Angel TV shows! After that came the eagerly awaited video game Batman: Arkham City, in which Selina was voiced by Grey DeLisle who is among our favoritest voice actresses!

This Spurring there was more Catwoman purroduct, such as the DC Universe Legacy Edition Catwoman Action Figure which resembled her 1940’s style!  We reviewed that in May, and in June we reviewed the Batman: Arkham City Catwoman action figure! Actually there is more than one Arkham City Catwoman action figure, the one by DC Direct, and the one by Mattel in the 2 pack with the Batman figure, but they are not the same figure! There is also the light ash gray painted version of the latter figure, which seems as if she slid down the chimney in search of the valuables to purrloin!

In July the first batch of the Hallmark Stores’ Keepsake Ornaments for 2012 went on sale, including the splendid Catwoman ornament! She is the comics Catwoman not the movie Catwoman, in the shiny Black tight leather with the nekomimi helmet with the goggles raised to reveal her face & Blue eyes! She is in the crouched spurringing pose, as if jumping through her whip which twirls in the figure 8 loop around her! If she were standing up straight she would be appurroximately 4 3/4″ tall, so I suppose that is the 1/14 scale ornament since Selina is supposedly 5’7″ in the comics!

As Tara-chan noted, Selina is also lurking upon the cover of the comic book purrice guide and all of those magazine covers, leading to her big event of the year, the Dark Knight Rises in which she is purrfectly purrtrayed by Anne Hathaway! There are all sorts of  Dark Knight Rises Catwoman purroducts too, such as the miniatures, action figures, statues, the Hot Wheels car, the stand – ups, and her appurrances in various books, so it is like the Catwo-mania! That is all for this month’s spotlight, but nyow here is Mike to review the Dark Knight Rises our batch of

Movie & DVD Reviews!

Dark Knight Rises (plot spoiler warning!)

Mike:

Thank you Nya-sensei! I was very pleased with the first two  Batman movies starring Christian Bale directed by Christopher Nolan, and the 2nd movie in the trilogy is one of our all time favorite movies and favorite live-action film of 2008 (see our August 2008 Mew for our review of Dark Knight)! I also liked Nolan’s subsequent film Inception a lot, so I was I went into Dark Knight Rises with pragmatic optimism, in hopes that it would be as good as or better than Dark Knight, but I was a bit disappointed.

It certainly has a wonderful cast, sets, locations, cinematography, FX, sound & music, and while Dark Knight Rises is a much bigger. grander, longer movie than its predecessors, I don’t think it is a better movie. Even at over 160 minutes long, it felt way too rushed & short, with more emphasis on action & spectacle and not enough on the character development and conversational scenes, and I just don’t accept the premise of Batman hanging up the cowl for 8 years after the death of Harvey Dent.

Dramatically it could not touch the Batman’s prior movie’s tour de force climactic scene between Batman, Gordon & Dent, and Dark Knight Rises needs at least another half hour’s worth of such powerful character driven drama. The roles of Gordon & Alfred were not as extensive as I’d hoped, which is a shame since Gary Oldman as Gordon might be my favorite character. I wanted more of Alfred & Bruce, Lucius & Bruce, and Gordon & Batman together as friends, and as more proactive heroes.

Sadly, Jim Gordon’s family was unceremoniously written out of the picture. There were many references to Harvey Dent & Ras Al Ghul, but no mention of The Joker. Yet again we get the “villain’s master plan to destroy Gotham” plot which is common to the past 7 live-action Batman movies. Anne Hathaway is brilliant as Catwoman, and I liked how her goggles flip up to look like kitty ears, but regrettably she did not get the same screen time that Michelle Pfeiffer did as the kitty in Batman Returns.

Tom Hardy is fine as Bane, and he was much better than the one in the Batman and Robin movie. Unfortunately neither Catwoman nor Bane were nearly as developed as Harvey Dent or The Joker, not given enough time to shine like Heath Ledger or Aaron Eckhart did as those characters. Catwoman confronting Bane was nice, but it was not as fun as The Hulk beating up Loki, which is to say that The Avengers is still my favorite movie of 2012, while Dark Knight Rises is cold, bleak and not much fun.

Wayne Manor becoming an orphanage was one bright moment of the movie. I liked Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Detective Blake, and it was great to see more of Morgan Freeman as Fox, Cillian Murphy as Crane & Liam Neeson as Ras Al Gul; Marion Cotillard was OK as Talia and June Temple was OK as Selina’s accomplice who reminded me of Holly Robinson… but there just was not enough of ANY of them, and there also didn’t seem to be enough passage of time during Bruce’s stay in the prison pit.

At least Batman did not say “Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb” when he flew the nuke into the bay, but I’m guessing what’s left of any fish there are gonna be radioactive for a long time. By the way, that’s not a slight at the fun 1966 Batman movie! Compared to other trilogies’ conclusions, I think Dark Knight Rises is better than Return of the Jedi, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and X-Men 3. but I don’t think it’s as good as Return of the King, Back to the Future 3 or Mothra 3, and I’m not sure if I like it more or less than Spider-Man 3. Speaking of Spider-Man, here’s Trini-chan to review

The Amazing Spider-Man!

Trini-chan:

Hai! We thought the prior three Spider-man movies were pretty good, especially the 2nd one with Dr. Octopus, but were a bit surprised that the series was to be rebooted so soon! The early preview trailer did not leave us optimistic, but the more we saw of Spider-Man in the later trailers the optimism increased! Reboots make me nervous, especially regarding comic book material, but there have been the movie reboots we have liked, such as the James Bond, the Batman, the X-Men… and I must say that I thought this new Spider-Man movie was pretty good!

In several aspects I think it feels a lot more like the comics books, with Spider-Man’s webs, super powers, fights, high school incidents and humorous quips to his enemies! In this movie his origin tale is retold and he fights Dr. Conners alias The Lizard, who is a sympathetic character whose good intentions and super Lizard powers get out of control to harm innocent people. I thought the movie was well directed with very nice scenes of New York, plenty of the good character development & the super action, and not a lot of the annoying cinema techniques!

The mewsic score by James Horner was good, although I did not care for the songs in the movie. The special FX were very good, although I did not care for some of the graphics & sounds of some of the devices in the movie, such as Peter’s police radio scanner, Dr. Conners’s computer or the chemical sprayer. I liked the entire cast, including Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker / Spider – Man, Sally Field as his Aunt May, Martin Sheen as his Uncle Ben & Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy! She was so perfect and looked like she stepped right out of the comic books!

I also liked Denis Leary as her dad Police Captain Stacy, Chris Zylka as classmate Flash Thompson, and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Conners / The Lizard. He portrayed Xenophyllius Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies! Stan Lee appears in the brief scene! We see a copy of the Daily Bugle newspaper, but sadly there are no references to the other heroes of the Marvel Universe. Make sure to watch for the bonus scene during the end credits! Now I would like to say a few words about–

Moonrise Kingdom!

Trini-chan:

Moonrise Kingdom is the latest delightful movie directed, co – written & co- produced by Wes Anderson whose previous credits include Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Fantastic Mr. Fox! The tale is set in 1965 on the beautiful island in the New England region, and the plot pertains to two kids Sam & Suzy who run away to the other end of the beautiful island to escape their purroblems for a few days, and the other kids & adults who search for them before the big stormy weather arrives!

Sam has decided to quit his scout troop camp and Suzy is getting away from her family’s house, bringing along her pet kitty in the basket & plenty of the cat food while they hike through the maritime forests, rocks, brooks & meadows to camp along the shore of the romantic cove which they call the Moonrise Kingdom, inspired by Suzy’s favorite wonderful juvenile fantasy novels! Suzy & Sam might be the protagonists fleeing the unhappy situations, but many of the pursuers become the sympathetic fun characters too!

From the lead roles to the extras, the rest of the family, scouts & islanders are all wonderful too! The entire cast is brilliant, including Kara Hayward as Suzy, Jared Gilman as Sam, Frances McDormand & Bill Murray portray Suzy’s lawyer parents, Bruce Willis is the island’s police chief, Tilda Swinton is the children’s social services representative, Sam’s scoutmasters are portrayed by Edward Norton, Jason Schwartzman & Harvey Keitel, and Bob Balaban purrtrays the movie’s narrator!

The movie has the superb mix of the whimsical comedy, the poignant character development, the great dialogue, and the unpredictable plot twists that move at the purrfect pace! The costumes and the wardrobe are particularly nice, including the delightful costumes of the kids’ theatre production; the sets & locations are so very pretty with the superb cinematography! The songs & symphonic music are wonderful, including the orchestral music right up to the very end of the credits! I will give Moonrise Kingdom the high “A” grade! Now here is Myayr to tell us about

The Six Million Dollar Man Season 2 DVD!

Mary Nyan:

Arigato, Trini-chan! We were so happy when The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman TV series were finally released here on standard DVD! For those who came in late, The Six Million Dollar Man is Colonel Steve Austin purrtrayed by Lee majors , the astronaut & test pilot who survived the crash thanks to the opurration purrformed by the genius Dr. Rudy Wells, that replaced an eye, arm & legs with the bionic parts which give him the supurr powers as a US government secret agent working for his boss Oscar Goldman, who is purrtrayed by Richard Anderson!

We have purreviously reviewed all 3 seasons of The Bionic Woman & the 1st season of The Six Million Dollar Man, so this 2nd season set has been eagerly anticipated! This 6 disk set is compurrised of the 22 epurrsodes from 1974 – 1975  total 18 hours & 37 minutes, purrsented in the full frame screen aspect ratio of 1.33:1 in English language digital 2.0 audio, with the optional SDH subtitles of the very legible White bold font! The disks are easy to remove from the plastic case inside the cardboard outer sleeve!

Nyow I will expound upon the 2nd season epurrsodes! Steve drives some nice cars in the 2nd season such as the Corvette, the Jaguar X-J6, the Mercedes and the AMC Matador!

On disk 2, Steve befriends & fights Barney, a troubled fellow cyborg known as “The Seven Million Dollar Man”, Steve meets an alien purrtrayed by Meg Foster who is stranded on the Earth in “Straight On ‘Til Morning”, although in that’un the stock footage of the Saturn I rocket changes to that of the Saturn V rocket! Then he investigates the criminal activity at the gold mine in “The Midas Touch”; and Clifton James stars in the “Deadly Replay” in which Steve flies the rebuilt HL-10 plane that crashed before, so not only was Steve rebuilt, but so was his beloved HL-10!

On disk 3, Steve and Sharon the marine biologist are among the captives of pirates in the “Act of Piracy”. She has the cute Blue sleeveless outfit! The aircraft carrier USS Ranger also stars in that’un! Then Steve gets the amnesia as the “Stranger of Broken Fork”, and Farrah Fawcett Majors stars as the troublesome determined reporter out for the big scoop as “The Peeping Blonde”! It is so sad that Farrah passed away. Donna Mills & Tab Hunter star in “The Cross – Country Capurr”, which was the very fun epurrsode in which Steve must purrotect the horse jumpurr!

On disk 4, Steve is reunited with the “Lost Love”; and while searching the island for the lost missile, he encounters “The Last Kamikaze” who does not know that World War II is over! Henry Jones repurrises the role as the evil scientist who replaces Oscar with the android twin in “The Return of the Robot Maker”; and Steve teams up with the feisty tracker E.J. in the mountains to capture the endangered fierce Golden Cougar named “Taneha”, whom the ranchers hunt! E.J. is of my favoritest characters of the season, and she is purrtayed by Jess Walton!

She purrtrays Jill Abbot on the Young & The Restless! Nyow on to disk 5! George Foreman assists Steve who is impurrsonated by a “Look Alike” after a bionic fishing trip; Dick Van Patten purrtrays the scientist who is psychically purrsued by “The E.S.P. Spy”; and the disk is topped off by the most significant story of the entire series, “The Bionic Woman” Parts 1& 2, starring Lyndsay Wagner in the title role, as Jaime Sommers, Steve’s girlfriend who gets the bionic parts after the accident, and later her own wonderful spin – off series!

Those 2 epurrsodes have the optional audio commentary by writer Kennith Johnson and were  included in The Bionic Woman Season 1 DVD set. Finally, on disk 6, the glamorous Martine Bestwick stars in the exciting tale of international political kidnapping titled “Outrage in Balinderry”, and Gary Lockwood returns to purrtray a vengeful assassin who frames Steve for murder in “Steve Austin, Fugitive”! It is the 2nd season finale, co – starring Bernie Hamilton, Reb Brown, and introduces Jennifer Darling as Oscar’s recurring secretary Ms. Callahan!

Reb Brown purrtrayed Captain American in 2 TV movies a few years later! See if you can tell who purrtrays the electronics store clerk in that epurrsode! Also on disk 6 are the few special features, compurrised of the the 15 minute discussion of the 2nd season’s guest stars, and the amewsed 11 minute discussion & imitations of the bionic sound FX! We hope that the remaining 3 seasons plus the 3 reunion movies will also soon be released! That will conclude our movie & DVD reviews, but nyow I will turn The Mew over to Vonny to purrside over

Our Main Event: An Intermew with

Special Guest Lady Violet Arcane!

Yvonne:

Arigato, nya! Lady Violet Arcane is the beautiful & graceful purrforming artist, as the model, dancer & cosplayer who specializes in the sexy alternative, cyber, fetish, glamorous pin up, goth, industrial, and the sword & sorcery styles, nya! You can see her modeling the dresses, bikini, body paint, chain mail & leathery fashions in her gallery at Model Mayhem http://www.modelmayhem.com/1332098, nya!

She has worked with many photographers, purrmoters, mewsicians & other artists; with photo shoots & intermews for the numerous magazines & web sites, nya! She was the cover girl for our friend & past guest Alan Welch’s http://www.reverierealm.com Reverie Realms 2011 Calendar, and posed as the dangerous winged demon girl for several of his fantasy images, nya!

We had the pleasure of meeting her at wonderful What The Hell Con http://wthcon.guilcoyachting.org, and seeing her dazzle the outdoor audience at the Central NC Pagan Pride http://www.cncppd.org where she supurrbly belly danced as part of the Succubus Sorority troupe http://succubussorority.com, nya!

Those are both such joyful events attended by such friendly, talented multi cultural folks, nya! They are on Facebook too; Succubus Sorority http://www.facebook.com/succubussorority and Lady Violet Arcane http://www.facebook.com/theladyvioletarcane, nya!

She has purrformed at the catwalks, clubs, cons, shows & festivals in the numerous cities, not just here in North Carolina, but also in Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana, Colorado and Washington D.C., nya! Nyow she is here at Catgirl Island, so let us please welcome our special guest Violet, nya! Aloha and welcome to The Mew, nya! May we get you a tasty beverage, nya?

Violet:

(wearing the cute little Black bikini with the White skulls and the dark Purrple wrap) Yes please- I love fruity drinks!

Yvonne:

Coming right up! We hope you will purrtake of tonight’s luau suppurr after the show, nya! So, what are your favorite treats to eat, nya?

Violet:

I am a big fan of cheese, cracker, and meat plates to snack on. I also love good cook-out food, but I’ll eat just about anything offered!

Yvonne:

Hopefully you will enjoy the spurread of the luau we have planned, nya! You are so multi talented, nya! Does that run in the family, nya?

Violet:

My mother is very crafty, and my brothers have many talents, from writing to computer skills to mechanic abilities.

Yvonne:

So how did y’all wind up here in North Carolina, nya?

Violet:

I moved to NC from Atlanta for a change of pace. It is peaceful here, but sometimes boring, so I like to spice things up a bit in my own way.

Yvonne:

I read that you enjoy the Horseback riding, nya! Is it the English, Western or other style, nya?

Violet:

English is what I am most comfortable with, though I can stand bareback for a while!

Yvonne:

Do you y’all have any horses or other pets, nya?

Violet:

I am a huuuge animal lover. I’ve had many pets throughout my life, from the exotic to the domesticated. I currently have a few dogs and am hoping to bring a cat or rabbit into my life soon.

Yvonne:

Yattah, nya! Aside from the riding are there other sports have you enjoyed, nya?

Violet:

I swam in high school- it was certainly my strongest sport. I also enjoy tennis and obstacle running.

Yvonne:

Oh you might like to purrtake of the ocean and the Purrkour during your visit, nya! So when did you first aspire to be purrform on the stage or in front of the camera, nya?

Violet:

I was about 18 when I was introduced to the stage. At first I wasn’t too keen, but I soon became comfortable with exploring it as a creative outlet.

Yvonne:

What sort of education & training have you had?

Violet:

I was lucky enough to attend a very fine arts school in Florida which provided me with a great background in writing and creative arts. I have trained myself in almost all of my performance abilities.

Yvonne:

What were the first times you modeled, acted, danced or cosplayed, nya?

Violet:

I took the stage at 18 with a variety performance troupe in Jacksonville, Fl. With that came aspect of modeling, then dressing up and costuming and cosplay.

Yvonne:

Do you dance for the fun, fitness, spirituality, compurrtition, or the purrofessional career, nya?

Violet:

All of the above! Dance is a great way to express yourself and relieve stress, not to mention the great health benefits, from cardio to balance to stamina training.

Yvonne:

Is your belly dance style of the cabaret, tribal, gypsy, Egyptian, Turkish or others, nya?

Violet:

I practice Gothic belly dance, which merges Gothic dramatics and visuals with mainly cabaret and tribal formats.

Yvonne:

Oh you might wish to see Jenjen’s troupe too, nya! So how did the Succubus Sorority troupe get started, nya?

Violet:

It started in early 2010- I had some girlfriends who wanted to bring a new kind of performance to the stage. We merged our various skills to come up with something fresh and new, and the Succubus Sorority emerged.

Yvonne:

How often do y’all meet to purractice, rehearse or choreograph the dances, nya?

Violet:

It depends on what shows we have coming up. We almost never perform the same acts twice, but girls doing solo acts do not necessarily to meet other for rehearsals. We do try to meet regularly though- at least once every few weeks.

Yvonne:

Belly dancing is healthy festive fun for people of all sizes, genders & ethnicities, nya! If someone wants to try it for the first time, where would you recommend they start, nya?

Violet:

There are some great tutorials on youtube, and google search will yield several results for classes offered at fitness spots in your area.

Yvonne:

I understand that you also purrform the fire dancing, with the flaming whips & hoops, and even the fire breathing, nya? How did that start, nya?

Violet:

I wasn’t very smart about starting to play with fire- I taught myself to do it on my own after reading several tutorials. I am lucky enough that I have not hurt myself (knock on wood), and have even trained others in doing it successfully, but you should never play with fire without an experienced professional on hand!

Yvonne:

How far can you breath the fire, nya?

Violet:

You know, I have never really measured my breaths. 10 ft up, maybe 3 or so feet across? I will have to try to measure in the future and get back to you!

Yvonne:

You can walk on the stilts too, nya? How tall are those, nya?

Violet:

I’m a clumsy stilt walker, having only done it a handful of times. I am on the look out for a good pair of drywall stilts to purchase. I am comfortable walking on a 4 ft stilt, but would like to go higher!

Yvonne:

What are the safety purrcaustions for the fire & stilt stunts, and what advice do you have for anyone interested in attempting such dangerous feats, nya?

Violet:

I always have a fire safety on hand. A wet blanket or fire blanket, a fire extinguisher, and kitty litter to clean up fuel spills are the bare minimum safety equipment- but there is much more to it than that. Learning from someone who has experience is the ONLY safe way to go.

Yvonne:

We’ve seen you wielding the blade weapons as the demoness in several of Alan’s illustrations, nya! How did that collaboration transpire, nya?

Violet:

Alan and I met through my chainmailer, Chained Elegance. He liked my look, and we batted some ideas around. Since I lead The Succubus Sorority, he decided to illustrate me as a Succubus!

Yvonne:

Well I thought it was the supurrb result, nya! What was that purrocess like, with the make-up, costumes, purrops, other models, and the FX, nya?

Violet:

I actually never met the other models- Alan is handy at splicing together pictures. An awesome make-up artist came in and did me up, and we used costuming from Chained Elegance, Organic Armor, and my own closet to piece together the look.

Yvonne:

How did your initial imagining of those scenes compurr to the finished images, nya?

Violet:

I was surprised at how great everything looked. Alan is a photo wizard!

Yvonne:

Does that succubus you purrtrayed have a name or a story, nya?

Violet:

Not really- she was created almost as my evil alter ego.

Yvonne:

Will you be purrtraying her or other characters again soon, nya?

Violet:

I hope so!

Yvonne:

What are your favorite genres of the modeling, nya?

Violet:

My roots are in Goth, and it is a look I feel natural pulling off.

Yvonne:

Do you purrfur the studio shoots or the location shoots, nya?

Violet:

Studio shoots are easier to manipulate, both pre- and post-production. However, there is a certain character to location shoots. I suppose in the end, it depends on the look you want to create.

Yvonne:

Any underwater work, nya?

Violet:

It’s been a long time- I really want to get recent ones done for my port!

Yvonne:

Can you share any amewsing or scary tales of the location shoots, nya?

Violet:

Luckily, I haven’t had any scares. Most of my shoots are amusing simply because I have a very laid back personality and I joke a lot. I feel like the more relaxed you feel, the better you project an emotion.

Yvonne:

What is the most fun part & the toughest part about the catwalk/ runaway fashion modeling, nya?

Violet:

Fun part? Dressing up. Toughest part? Learning to move gracefully within a few seconds of putting on an outfit you have never worn before. It is harder than it sounds- especially for certain shoes!

Yvonne:

Oh gosh I assumed you would get to rehearse, nya! Do you tend to do your own hair & make-up, or work with the stylists, nya?

Violet:

Either. I’m pretty handy, but I know there is better out there!

Yvonne:

You have also appurred in the body paint & metal costume parts as the metallic cyber girls in some amazing pics by Living Brush Bodypaint /  Bonnie Stanley Photography and by Dragon’s Lair Photography, nya! Could you tell the story behind the character & pics, nya?

Violet:

Well, I needed a character to fit the style and theme behind my grinder girl top. The top is metal and outrageous, and when I hit it with the angle grinder, sparks go everywhere. So I thought a sexy android girl would do well. I started playing with silver body paint, made a big wig with metal conduit and electronics wires in it, and my sexy android was born. My friend Aeryun Suin made me a track just for that performance piece called ‘Sexy Robotica”.

Yvonne:

Well it turned out great, nya! What are the important tips for the body paint, nya?

Violet:

Stay. Very. Very. Still. And no scratching until everything is dry. Even then, light scratching.

Yvonne:

We could not help but notice your lovely ear, nose & lip piercings, nya! What purrompted those purrticular piercings, nya?

Violet:

Purely aesthetic choices, though I am very fond of them all.

Yvonne:

What advice do you have for folks purrtaining to the purrocurement of the piercings, nya?

Violet:

Make sure you know what you want, and go to a reputable piercer. Be sure to follow aftercare instructions carefully!

Yvonne:

Would you like a drink refill, nya?

Violet:

Oh yes please. I hadn’t realized how dry my mouth had gotten!

Yvonne:

Do you make, borrow or purrchase your lovely costumes, jewels & purrops, nya?

Violet:

All of the above. I love flea markets and yard sales, and can alter just about anything to look the way I want it.

Yvonne:

How & where do you make, care for & store all of your costumes & purrops?

Violet:

In my house, I have a storage room just for props, and a station where I sew and construct!

Yvonne:

In addition to the dancing, posing & acting, does your purrforming artistry include vocal or instrumental mewsic, nya?

Violet:

Oh no. I have ZERO musical talent, though I do love music!

Yvonne:

What kinds of mewsic do you enjoy the most, and who are some of your favorite mewicians, nya?

Violet:

I like Gothic rock, industrial, classical, and opera. Lately I have been revisiting some old favorites such as Bauhaus and Echo & The Bunnymen, as well as some newer acts, like Bella Morte and Rotersand.

Yvonne:

Who are your favorite or most inspurrational models, dancers, actors & other purrformers, nya?

Violet:

I love Dita, of course. She shows that you can be a talented person and a good businesswoman. The entire cast of Cirque De Soleil is also on my worship list!

Yvonne:

Oh they are so colorful agile & graceful, nya! Are you ever behind the camera, and do your artistic talents include the visual arts too, nya?

Violet:

No, I have never tried my hand behind the camera. My visually artistic skills are limited to my prop and costume design.

Yvonne:

Who are your favorite visual artists, designers, photographers & filmmakers, nya?

Violet:

I love the work of Cornacchia, Giger, AMF Corsets, and Pretty Pervy, to name a few. As for movies, I like cult classics, such as films by David Fincher, Luc Besson, Quentin Tarentino, David Lynch, and Stanley Kubrick.

Yvonne:

Oh Giger worked on Prometheus which we reviewed last month, nya! What are your favorite movies, stage, radio or TV shows, nya?

Violet:

A Clockwork Orange, Fight Club, The Labyrinth, and Sleeping Beauty come to mind. Also a big fan of the Aliens franchise.

Yvonne:

Did you see Prometheus, nya?

Violet:

Yes! I went midnight, opening night, at IMAX. I am a huge fan of Ridley, Giger, and the Aliens universe. The movie left us with more questions than answers, but I enjoyed it immensely.

Yvonne:

We reviewed it in last month’s Mew, nya! How about you favorite authors, books & comix, nya?

Violet:

I’m a big Neil Gaiman fan. I love everything he does.

Yvonne:

Oh I loved his Doctor Who, Sandman & Death tales, nya!

Violet:

I’m also partial to Jhonen Vasquez, Richard Adams, and Michael Swanwick (his book The Iron Dragon’s Daughter is one of my favorites). I also read Enid Blyton growing up- I loved her Adventure series.

Yvonne:

How many cons, shows & festivals do you attend,

Violet:

A BUNCH! 15 or more a year.

Yvonne:

Wow what are your favorites, nya?

Violet:

I love Dragoncon and Fetishcon. I can also be found wandering random Ren Faires.

Yvonne:

What are your upcoming appurrances & gigs we can look forward to, by yourself or with the Succubus Sorority, nya?

Violet:

I always have something in the works- I’m hoping to perform at Dragoncon this year and do a repeat performance at Fetishcon.

Yvonne:

What are your long range goals for your life & career, nya?

Violet:

When I get too old to appear on stage, I want to manage glamorous performers such as myself and help them realize their dreams! Getting married will happen when the time is right and with the right person, but I am not going to have children. Happiness and good fortune are the things I am hoping for!

Yvonne:

What health & fitness advice do you have for the aspiring models, purrformers & artisans, nya?

Violet:

I work out 4 days a week, eat right, and maintain happy, non-stressful, drama-free relationships with those around me. Mental health is important! Physical health is not just about how you look, but how you feel and how you portray yourself.

Yvonne:

What creative & business do you have for folks, nya?

Violet:

Put aside a block of time each week and dedicate it to learning a new craft or perfecting one you already know. As for business, at all times, professionalism is key!

Yvonne:

Violet, thank you so very much for being our special guest, nya! We hope you enjoy your visit, and we will see you after the show at the luau, nya!

Violet:

Thank you for having me!

The Cat Lady Sings…
