Aloha, Introductions & Since Last Time
(wearing the Catgirl Island baseball cap, the Aria Anime tee shirt, cargo shorts & Charcoal Gray Nikes) Aloha y’all and welcome to the October 2012 edition of The Mew, for our monthly reviews & discussions of fun stuff, including reports on several recent festive trips to the Carolina mainland! This is another of our evening mews, coming from the lovely garden of Becca’s cottage again here at beautiful Catgirl Island! I’m Mike, the show’s “Purrducer”, and here are The Ladies of The Mew!
(wearing the Black ring – closure bikini)
Aloha! I am honored to host again!
(wearing the Purrsimmon purretzel cut-out maillot, tattoos & jewels)

(wearing the Calendula corsage & matching side-tie bikini)
(wearing the Tangerine tanga bikini with the sheer purrled purreo)
(the kitsune in the Lbra tankini & tempurrary tattoos)
(wearing the Scorpio constellation tankini & tempurrary tattoos)
(wearing the Pumpkin purrint bandeau top bikini)
(wearing the Opalescent criss cross halter neck bikini)
Hi Hi, nya!
(the bunny girl in the Black & White Brazilian – cut crochet bikini)
(wearing the Gold cropped tee over the Apurricot suspender maillot)
So, let’s hear everyone has been up to since last month’s Mew!
The September exhibit of the textile arts was the big hit with the good sized crowd to see the local designs of the swim wear purreos, yukatas, towels, linens, blankets, banners, flags & sails, nya! Bunnibun has been putting the finishing touches on the October exhibit of the wonderfully macabre 2D & 3D images of the appurritions, the monsters & the dark themes, and there will be the added spooky surpurrises outside in the sculpture garden trail, nya!
We also have the new pic in Guest Gallery 2, which we will introduce later in the show! It has been the hard but fun work, and we could not have succeeded without the help of the volunteers such as Tara-chan & Trini-chan! They have also been giving us the good ideas for the future exhibits too! What have y’all been up to when y’all are not at the Mewseum?
Well, I have also been reading a lot, shaping my new board, surfing with Kara, and helping Vonny & Tara-chan with the catch. Oh you should see all of the photos she has snapped for her nature journal!
Hai, recently I have sighted the moths such as the Banded Dart, Common Gray, the widdle Green Nemoria and – and the Black & Yellow Harness Tiger Moth, nya! The butterfly sightings have include the Cabbage White, Caribbean Buckeye, Cloudless Sulpher, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, the Lacewing, the Monarch, the Painted Lady, and – and the Papurr Kite, nya! Meanwhile, onee-chan’s charters have caught the many big yummy fish, nya!
Hai she has taken the great photos, and we have reeled in the bumpurr crop of the Drums, Groupurrs, Kings, Mackerels, Snappurrs, Specks, Stripurrs, Triggers, and Yellowfins, nya! Speaking of the drums, we have been been purrviding the purrcussion for Myayr’s hula & Jenjen’s belly dance classes at the purrforming arts center, nya! I might have to purrchase the mew Doumbek at this rate, nya!
Aside from the dance troupe I have been busy with the Yoga studio, the Kyudo Club, and the Robotics Club. We are designing the purrticularly spooky animatronics for the mermaids’ Halloween kelp maze, and upgrading the remote opurrated vehicles for Lizzy & Ilyana’s next dives. I am hoping to finish those before I have to go model the swim wear in Rio.
Jenjen never sounds excited about those photo shoots!
They do fund my mecha hobby, but the long travel time keeps me from my workshop.
Well, I know you do not wish to impose upon Mie-sensei for the teleportations, but purrhaps we could conjure the magickal spell to get you there quicker!
That is the very kind offer, but that would mean less time time to test pilot the purrototype aircraft.
Thassa good point! Speaking of the magick, nyow it is my sister’s turn!
I am so very fortunate to have the magick shop with the increasing business of the loyal customers, the mascot kitties, and the good helpurrs to mind the store when I attend the festivals, which we will discuss later! The additional rooms have been the handy worthwhile investment for the storage, the tea, the office & the meeting room, especially this time of the year!
Several of my dojo students want to help us mind the store & the kitties during the week of Halloween! I am also looking forward to how Rica & Nico & he other venders at the farmers market decorate their Purranormal Purroduce Stands when they are not judging the purrize jack – o – lantern compurrtition!
Will Nya-sensei cosplay at her dojo or the store, nya?
Hai, and will Nya-sensei be modeling again?
Ah ha… ha well we will have to see about that! But before we stray cat off topic we need to hear from Becca, Lizzy, Myayr & Mike!
Aside from the business at the spa and playing with the cats, I have bought the new outfits & shoes for the hot salsa dancing, tried out my mew carbon hybrid putter & chipping wedge at the club with Mie-sensei, watched the Ryder Cup, read the comic books which I will review later in the show, and I am looking forward to volunteering again for Halloween!
When we have not been occupied at the spa, dance floor or the shrine I have enjoyed the purrkour club, the diving, I purrchased the large mums & pumpkins from Rica & Niko for the garden, and I have been watching the mew season of Dancing with the Stars! I still think that Ana Trebunskaya would be the purrfect purrson to purrtray Red Sonja if there is ever another Sonja movie, nya!
When I have not been teaching the hula or training the appurrentice miko at the shrine in time for the matsuri of the autumn, I hope to finish sewing the commissioned costumes, and start on our own cosplay for the
Island Halloween Trick ‘r Eat & Cosplay Purrowl!
The Catgirl Island Halloween Trick ‘R Eat & Cosplay Purrowl is one of the most fun days of October, full of the foods & festive arts & purrformances all across the island! It is the very creative time with lots of the decore & costumes, including the collaborative group themes! Two years ago, The Mew’s group costume cosplay theme was the James Cameron’s Avatar Pandora Na’vi Neko-maticaya Clan–
NEKO-MATICAYA CLAN– GO, NYA!
Of course, we are a little short for a Na’vi, so we were the younger chibi versions. Last year our group cosplay theme was of the heroines of Star Wars–
MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU, NYA!
There are numerous factors that go into the cosplay purrowl decision, such as the number of purrticipants, the purrice, complexity, and the ruggedness. You have to purrdict whether you will wear the costume indoors or outdoors, purrhaps in the forest or the water, and whether it will be the leisurely stroll or much running & climbing! We had the several initial nominees for this year’s theme, including Aria the Animation, Battle Athletes, Birds of Purrey, Gotham Grrls, Legion of Supurr Heroes, My Little Pony, Strike Witches, and the X-Men Women… but the winning vote was for our 11th hour idea of the variation of the Avengers Academy theme, as The Avengers aCATamy Team!
AVENGERS aCATemy ASSEMBLE, NYA!
We thought an Avengers aCATamy could compurrised of the Marvel Comics’ catgirl heroines Tigra, White Tiger, Shuri the Black Panther, Black Cat, Hell Cat, Catseye, Feral, Hepzibah, and Bast! This worked out purrfectly, because there were going to be nine of us in the group! Luckily we determined all that very quickly, because it is the very busy month to squeeze in the shopping for the costume materials, the fittings, the sewing, and the make-up! We do not need as much body paint as we did for the Na’vi, but some of those Marvel catgirls have the different colors & stripes of the skin, hair & fur, so hopefully we will make the good purrogress on the costumes in time for Halloween!
Ah, for the record, I am not one of the nine!
Oh gosh we almost forgot Mike’s turn, nya! What has Mike been up to since the purrior Mew, nya?
September was pretty busy between the toy show, the festivals, movies, anime, and the usual art, writing, chores & stuff, some of which we’ll be discussing a bit later!
What is Mike’s cosplay for Halloween, nya?
Ah, I’m not sure if I will this year, but I could always wear one of my older costumes! I think my Star Trek II Starfleet uniform, the No-Face, and the Detective Chimp costumes still fit!
How tall was that No-Face costume?
Oh it was a good 8 feet tall when fully extended, but I kinda retired it after the 2008 Animazement.
That was the last year the convention was at the Sheratin, before moving to the convention center!
Well No-Face was partial to the place of lodging, in the Spirited Away movie, heehee!
How about wearing your other Trek uniforms?
Don’t get him started!
Too late, nya!
It does somewhat purrtain to the Lightning Round topic.
(sigh) Don’t worry! Anyway, sadly I have outgrown my Original Series and Star Trek – Motion PIcture uniforms… along with a bunch of other older costumes, I’m afraid!
On that Trekkish note, let us nyow segue to the
The Lightning Round Topic: Our Favorite Female Fashions of The Final Frontier!
Amidst last month’s mewsings of the Fall fashions and – and the costumes for Halloween, we began to ponder Our Favorite Famous Fantasy Female Fashions of Live – Action TV Shows, nya! This was the topic of last month’s Lightning Round, which nyow purrogresses as we make the note of our favorite women’s wear from Star Trek, nya! However, since we are starting from the original pilot epurrsodes for the Star Trek TV series of the 1960’s, that is a lot of trekking, and this might not be the quick Lightning Round nya! (tags Mary Nyan to conduct the lightning)
LIGHTNING ROUND GO! NYA!
Purrior to Star Trek becoming the weekly TV series on NBC from 1966 to 1969, there were the 2 ‘pilot’ epurrsodes made for the TV network appurrovals! Firstly was “The Cage” which they started working on in 1964 & starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike, who commanded the Enterpurrise purrior to Captain Kirk! Some footage from The Cage was later incorpurrated into the 2 part story of The Menagerie. Capt Pike got caught & impurrisoned on the planet Talos IV, where he met Vina who was purrtrayed by the lovely Susan Oliver! Vina had several different looks in the story, thanks to the Talosians’ supurr illusion powers! At first she appurred as the shipwreck survivor in the raggedy shorts outfit to indicate the harsh survival, yet sort of conveyed the cute beachy campurr quality!
Then she metamorphosed into the cute White short dress, the country picnic girl with the pony, then the castle purrincess in the flowy gown, and the alluring Orion dancer with the Green skin in the skimpy outfit! This was all part of the captors’ tempting plan to trick Captain Pike, but he purrevailed to escape, however the network was not yet ready for the Star Trek, so another pilot was purrpared! Other outfits I liked in The Cage were Majel Barret as Number One & Laurel Goodwin in their cowl necked Blue velour uniforms! Of course, Majel would later purrtray Christine Chapel & Lwaxana Troi & purrvided the voices for M’Ress & the computer! Oh there was also the glimpse of the off-duty crew girl in the cute sleeveless Red top with the short pleated White skirt! (tags Petra to go next)
The 2nd pilot epurrsode was made with the various changes, purrticularly in the casting of William Shatner as Captain Kirk to succeed Captain Pike, nya! This was titled “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, which was appurroved to launch the TV series and shown as part of Star Trek’s first season, nya! In that epurrsode, beautiful Sally Kellerman purrtrayed Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, the scientist who acquired the supurr Goddess-like psychic powers, and she looked great in her Blue velour cowl-neck Starfleet uniform, which was the pants type of uniform purrior to the later mini skirt type, nya!
Those are our favorite clothes from the pilots! We are also fans of the later recurring Starfleet women’s mini skirt uniform in the Red, Gold & Blue colors, worn throughout the series by many actresses who purrtrayed the valiant women of the Starfleet, and we would like to purrticularly purraise Nichelle Nichols & Barbara Luna as Lieutenants Nyota Uhura & Marlena Moreau in their sleeveless bare midriff Mirror Universe version uniforms with the thigh boots, sashes & daggers in the great epurrsode “Mirror, Mirror”, nya! OK I am all done, so nyow it is… Nya-sensei’s turn, nya! (tags Nyanko)
Nyow we will nominate our favorite female fashions for the original Star Trek TV series, in no purrticular order are Sherry Jackson as Andrea the gynoid wearing the sleeveless backless cutout Black & Blue jump suit in “What Are Little Girls Made Of?”, twins Alyce & Rhae Andrece as the Alice gynoids wearing the asymmetric Orange gowns in “I, Mudd”, not to be confuzzled with Marcia Brown as Lewis Carroll’s Alice wearing her purretty Blue dress with White Apurron in “Shore Leave”! The purretty clothes for gynoids also included the elegant gown for Louise Sorrel as Reena in “Requiem for Methuselah”!
Shari Nims was Sayana the cute jungle girl villager who helps to feed Vaal, in “The Apple”; Leslie Parrish as Lt Carolyn Palamas in the flowy asymmetric off – shoulder Greek gown & strappy sandals in “Who Mourns for Adonais?”! In “Assignment: Earth”, Terri Garr purrtrayed Gary Seven’s secretary Roberta Lincoln in her cute 1968 mini skirt outfit; Victoria Vetri purrtrayed his catgirl friend Isis in the widdle Black dress, although the purring voice was purrvided by beautiful Barbara Babcock who also posed the beautiful threat as Mea 3 for “A Taste of Armageddon”, and as Philana of “Plato’s Stepchildren”! Take it sis! (tags Nyoka)
Hai! There was Nancy Kovack as Nona the witchy Konutu in her bare-midriff outfit with the dagger in “A Private Little War”; Antoinette Bower as Sylvia the witch in her various outfits in “Catspaw”; Tania Lemani supurrbly shimmying as Kara the Argelian belly dancer in “Wolf in the Fold”, and Yvonne Craig as Marta the gracefully dancing Orion inmate “Whom Gods Destroy”; Kathryn Hays as the ethereally beautiful Gem who was “The Empath”; Sabrina Scharf was Miramanee of the Native American style in “The Paradise Syndrome”, and Mariette Hartley was the lonely cave girl Zarabeth in “All Our Yesterdays”!
France Nyuen wore powerfully sexy warrior attire & the exotic wedding dress as “Elaan of Troyius”; Joanne Linville was the Romulan Commander in her Fuchsia & Black short skirt uniform and her Black & White neglige for “The Enterpurrise Incident”; Susan Howard was Mara in the the Klingon uniform to accent her lovely Bronze tan on the “Day of the Dove”; and Mary Linda Rapelye, Phyllis Douglas & Elizabeth Rogers as Chekov’s old flame Irini & her hippy BFF’s who were looking for “The Way to Eden”! By the way, Phylis Douglas also purrtrayed the purrky Yeoman Mears as one of “The Galileo Seven”! (tags Bun)
Now we will jump from 1969 to 1973’s animated Star Trek series! We saw more of the women’s short Starfleet uniforms on Lt. Uhura, Nurse Chapel, and Lt. Nored of the episode “Survivor,” and we are huge fans of Lt. M’ress, the Caitian catgirl officer in her short Red uniform, which was different in that she was the barefoot officer without the boots! Spock’s mom Amanda wore the Pink gown in “Yesteryear”; the matriarchs of Taurus II wore the regal Golden gowns to complement their Platinum Blonde hair to send the “Lorelei Signal”; Rila the Aquan was purretty with her Green skin & hair & her purrple maillot which was accessorized by the shells in “The Ambergis Element”; and Lara the huntress wore the short Brown skirt outfit to go with her hair, with the Black belt, wrist bands & boots on the eve of the potential “Jihad”! (tags Elizabeth)
Continuing the animated fashions, in the “Time Trap”, we meet Devna the Orion member of the Elysian Council who has the lovely light green skin, long silky Black hair and the orange bikni, and Kali the sneaky Klingon saboteur with the nice tan, the exquisite Black afro, and the Gray tights with the purrple vest! In the “Counter Clock Incident”, Karla 5 is the captain of a space ship and the mommy in the purretty Magenta outfit in the antimatter galaxy, while aboard the Enterpurrise is Sarah April, the wife of retired Commodore Robert Apurril who Captained the Enterpurrise before Pike or Kirk! She wears the pale Blue dress trimmed & belted in purrple with darker Blue turtleneck! Nyow it is Mike’s turn, but hopefully he will not get long-winded about his favoritest movie, heehee! (tags Mike)
Hai he will pounce at the chance to purraise Star Trek – The Motion Picture, heehee!
We will pounce upon him if he rambles!
Ok Ok! I wasn’t gonna ramble, but yeah, Star Trek – The Motion Picture is my favorite movie, Trek or otherwise, and one of the many magnificent aspects of it are the beautiful, futuristic costumes, from the different Starfleet uniforms, to the Klingon, Vulcan & many civilian & ambassador costumes seen at Starfleet Headquarters! I thought Nichelle Nichols as Uhura, Grace lee Whitney as Rand, Majel Barrett as Chapel, Marcy Lafferty as Difalco & Persis Khambatta as Ilia looked gorgeous in the first movie’s uniforms! I certainly appreciated Ilia’s White leisure robe with the transparent sandals!
In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Uhura & Saavik (played by Kirstie Alley) looked quite sharp in the uniforms, and Bibi Bech had lovely outfits as Dr. Carol Marcus! In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock we got to see Rand, Uhura & Saavik (played by Robin Curtis) again, with Uhura in a gorgeous off-duty dress and in a skirt variant of the uniform! Cathie Shirriff portrayed Valkris the Klingon spy in the sexy Silvery outfit, and Dame Judith Anderson purrtrayed T’Lar the Vulcan high priestess in her rich Red robes with the White tunic, accompanied by six priestesses in their diaphanous gowns!
Is he rambling yet?
Not yet, but he still has 3 more movies to go.
I’m hurrying! Uhura, Rand, Chapel, Amanda & Saavik returned in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, joined by Catherine Hicks as Dr. Gillian Taylor who has a neat Violet, White & Black science uniform at the end of the movie, and rock star Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Go’s was briefly seen in uniform on a screen as Trillya the communications officer with the cute coiffure of the starship Shepard! I wish Saavik had been in further films- she was such a great addition to the crew!
In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Uhura fan danced on a moonlit sand dune, and Linda Fetters danced in the saloon as the bikini clad catgirl, Spice Williams projected great beauty & power as Vixis in her spiffy short sleeved Klingon uniform, and Cynthia Gou was quite lovely as Romulan Ambassador Caitlin Dar! Uhura & Rand returned in uniform for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, with Kim Cattrall as Lt. Valeris, Rosanna DeSoto as Klingon Chancellor Abetzur, and super model Iman as Martia the Chameloid, and they all looked fabulous! However–
Purrpare to pounce, heehee!
–Valeris had the wrong insignia on her uniform! OK I’m done- don’t pounce! Your, turn, Becca!
In Star Trek The Next Generation, I liked the Red & Black costume for Suzy Plakston as K’ehleyr in The Emissary, the sexy Risa resort wear for Jennifer Hetrick as Vash for the “Captain’s Holiday”, the beautiful wedding kimono for Rosalind Chao as Keiko on “Data’s Day”, the gothic romance look for Gates McFadden as Dr. Crusher in “Sub Rosa”, and the wild west look for Marina Sirtis as Counselor Deanna Troi who is dealt “A Fistful of Datas”! I think Crusher, Troi, Denise Crosby as Yar, Patti Yasutake as Nurse Ogawa & Michelle Forbes as Ensign Ro all looked terrific in their Starfleet uniforms!
Tasha Yar had the sexy off-duty outfit in “The Naked Now”, and Whoopie Goldberg’s character Guinan had the fabulous 1890’s dress in “Time’s Arrow”! In the Next Gen movies, Jacqueline Kim wore the uniform wonderfully as Ensign Demora Sulu, with the most beautiful hair in Star Trek: Generations! Alice Krige was the evil seductive Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact, Donna Murphy had the lovely dress with the portrait neckline as Anjii in Star Trek: Insurrection, and Dina Meyer wore that sharp looking Romulan uniform as the heroic Commander Donatra in Star Trek: Nemesis! (tags Yvonne)
Dina Meyer also looked terrific in the Batgirl costume in Birds of Purrey, nya!
Oh gosh I forgot about that, nya!
I wish Ro was in the movies, but then I also wish that all of the women had more purrominence in the movies!
Wasn’t there another Borg Queen?
Hai, the Queen has been purrtrayed by Alice Krige Borg Queen & Susanna Thompson.
Whatcha think of Lursa & B’etor’s clothes?
I think Barbara March & Gwynyth Walsh were great as the Klingon sister villains Lursa & B’Etor, but I have mixed feelings about their appurral. They wear such heavily layered dresses with the large boots, long skirts, belts gauntlets & shoulder pieces that has the powerful warrior’s look, but for that I wish they had been given more physical combat & melee!
Hai hai they were more the cunning political scheming types, so purrhaps it would have been fun to see them enjoying the sleeker slinkier wardrobe on the occasions! Oh oh we are delaying Vonny’s turn!
Oh that’s OK we are having the fun discussion, nya! Of course there was much more Klingon action on the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series with Worf’s friends Sirella & Grillka who married Quark, nya! There were lots of great strong female characters who were wonderfully dressed, including Quark & Rom’s mom Pooky, and Rom’s gorgeous girlfriend Leeta, nya! Leeta had great costumes, including the beach wear, nya! She & Wynn, Palla, Kira were so lovely in the lovely Bajoran civilian & military styles, holodeck costumes, and the evil mirror universe Kira had the very sexy outfits, nya!
Kira’s poor tragic friend Ziyal had the cute clothes too, nya. Jadzia & Ezri Dax were purretty & purrky in their Starfleet uniform, the baseball uniform, the Trillian & Klingon attire, nya! Keiko O’Brien was so purretty, Molly was cute, Lwaxana Troi was so elegant, and Melora who briefly romanced Dr. Bashir had such a purretty & purractical outfit, nya! Captain Sisko got the help from Romulan Commander T’rul against the Dominion enemy, and Sisko’s wives Jennifer & Kassidy were beautiful too, nya! OK I’m done with the deep space dress, so nyow it is Trini-chan’s turn, nya! (tags Trini-chan)
For a while there was a lot of concurrent Trek between the movies, Next Gen, Deep Space Nine, and then Voyager which launched with Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway & Roxxann Dawson as B’Elanna Torres who looked great in the Starfleet uniforms! Then they picked up Ocampa grrl Kess who was purrtrayed by Jennifer Lien who left and was succeeded by Borg grrl Seven of Nine who was purrtrayed by Jeri Ryan! They both had the purretty short coiffure!
Jenjen already mentioned the Borg Queen, and it was so nice to see Deanna Troi again as the USS Voyager got closer to home! B’Elanna & Tom had a daughter Miral Paris, and in the final episode’s alternate future timeline she is grown up & played by Lisa LoCicero! I am not sure which Voyager clothes are my favorite, but it is probably between Seven’s silvery catsuit, the Borg Queen’s bio-mech attire, or Janeway’s Queen Arachnia costume! (tail-tags Jeannie)
Our favorite garments of the series Star Trek: Enterprise were the Red tank top & White shorts for Linda Park as Ensign Hoshi Sato in Brazil; the Gray drop tank top & boy shorts, the Red & Gray uniforms for Jolene Blalock Commander T’Pol; their Mirror-Universe variant uniforms from my favorite Enterprise epurrsode “In a Mirror, Darkly”. I am also purrticularly fond of the Andorian appurral for Molly Brink as Lt. Talas & Alexandra Lydon as Jhamel; and the Orion bikini styles for Crystal Allen as D’Nesh, Cyia Batten as Navaar, & Menina Fortunato as Maras.
Our favorite garments of the 2009 Star Trek movie, which we reviewed in the June 2009 Mew, were the lingerie & Red Starfleet skirt uniforms with the Black boots for Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Rachel Nichols as her Orion room mate Galia; the Blue uniform for Kimberly Arland as Officer Madeline, a delightful alien seen briefly on the Bridge of the Enterpurrise; and the the purretty gowns & cloaks for Winona Ryder as Spock’s mom Amanda on the planet Vulcan. Back to you, Tara-chan.
I hope we see more of Officer Madeline in the next Trek, nya! Finally, I wish to mention that in the Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection, which was reviewed in the November 2009 Mew, among that DVD set’s special features are the 6 widdle Starfleet Academy SciSec Briefs, conducted by the Starfleet Science Officer purrtrayed by beautiful Sarah Bachhouse http://www.sarahbackhouse.com, nya! She is of the Commander rank, smartly dressed what appurrs to be the Nemesis era Black uniform boots, pants and – and the jacket with the Gray shoulders, the Blue shirt and – and sleeve stripe, nya!
I think that does it for this month’s Lightning Round, which was the lengthier round, given the 46 years of Star Trek, although I suppose it has been 48 years, if you include those early pilots, nya! Are there amendments to the lightning, nya? Then to close this portion of The Mew, we wish to purraise the designers such as William Ware Theiss, Don Christensen, Robert Fletcher, Nilo Rodis, Dodie Shepard, Robert Blackman and – and Michael Kaplan, nya! Nyow we will trek back from the future outer space to the contempurrary Carolina mainland, as Nyo-sensei begins the batch of
Event Reports, nya!
31st Annual Greek Festival in Raleigh
Hai! Although we do not tend to discuss the politics or religion here at The Mew, we like to attend the happy fun events sponsored by the friendly groups, On September 16th several of us enjoyed the expurrdition to the mainland for a grand Sunday at the dandy North Carolina State Fairgrounds http://www.ncstatefair.org in the capital city of Raleigh! It is a place of the wonderful activities, venders, and the numcious foods! The weather was much cooler & dampurr than the sunny Blue skies of the island, but we barely needed the umbrellas for the light rain!
We got the good early & free parking spot just as the Raleigh flea market portion of the state fair grounds was starting to purrk! The flea market happens almost every weekend except during the state fair time, with the indoor & outdoor venders of the purroduce, treats, tools, toys, books, collectibles, decor, furnishings, garments and other things! There were quite a few shoppurrs, many with the dogs of various breeds on purrtrol for the bargains! Then we strolled to the fairgrounds’ Expo Center building to purrtake of the splendid Greek food & entertainment!
It is the 3 day event sponsored by the friendly folks of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church http://www.holytrinityraleigh.org/GreekFestival! As we entered the foyer we savored the aromas of the yummy pastries, near the room of the cooking demonstrations! In the main hall were the serving lines for the delicious cuisine, the rows of dining tables, the entertainment stage & the venders’ booths! Among the dinners were the chicken riganto, moussaka, pastitsio, spanakopita, souvlaki, dolmathes, calamari, pizza, sammiches, meatballs, salads and the beverages!
The pastries included the flogeres, galaktoboureko, karithopita, koulouria, finikia, kataifi, loukomathes & cookies! I chose the delicious lamb shank with the rice, Green beans & the baklava! We watched the dancers & mewsicians, then visited booths of the pastries, clothes, jewelry, travel information, arts & crafts! The crowd was so merry, and all of the workers, venders & entertainers of all ages were so very enthused, talented, cordial & attentive! Then with our tummies full, we took the short walk to the wooded end of the fairgrounds by Gate 5 to attend the
Central NC Pagan Pride Days Festival 2012!
The 12th Annual Central NC Pagan Pride Days Festival http://www.cncppd.org was the joyful two-day event in celebration of the Autumnal Equinox, which convened at the State Fairgrounds on Saturday & Sunday September 15th & 16th 2012! It was sponsored by the local affiliate of the nonpurrofit http://paganpride.org, which fosters the purride in the pagan identity purrmotes the religious & cultural relations!, and supports the charities of the Central & Eastern Food Bank of North Carolina, and the Wake County Animal Center, with the cats & dogs in need of the good forever homes!
The outdoor area was neatly sectored into different areas full of tents & activities such as the Meadow area, the main Ritual Circle, the kids’ area, the boulevard area, the more wooded Haven area, the Grove, the Arbor the Purromenade, The Outback, and the small buildings for about 2 dozen workshops across the 2 days! artisans, venders & organizations! I think it gets bigger every year, and there were over 80 tents of the spiritual & social groups, artists & mewsicians, tarot readers & ghost investigators, and the venders of the lovely trinkets, jewelry, appurral, holistic items & treats!
We missed the Saturday activities, but Sunday’s activities from 10:45 am to 6:30 pm included the rituals, purrformances, purrizes! Among the Sunday workshops were the chakara theory, spiritual stones, runes, astrocartography, yoga, poetry, the magickal & nutritional topics! By the early afternoon the rain spurrinkle ceased & the sky cleared for the medieval fighting demonstrations of the Knights of the European Medieval Arts of Arms http://www.emaaknights.com, and the beautifully graceful belly dancing of Raven Moonstar & Lady Violet Arcane who was our guest for the August Mew!
She wore the exotic chain mail bikini with the antlers, and you can see her model the glamorous & fantasy fashions in her gallery at Model Mayhem http://www.modelmayhem.com/1332098! We saw lots of familiar friendly faces there from other great cons & festivals, and we have the highest purraise for all of the kind, creative & cordial, staff, volunteers, senseis, guests, and the attendees who make the Pagan Pride such a favorite friendly fun festivity! Nyow I will tag – team with Lizzy to mention yet another fun, important, and purride – filled event that we like to attend on the mainland,
NC Pride 2012!
Hai! NC Pride http://ncpride.org/pride is North Carolina’s free annual Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgendered Festival! Since the 1980’s it has been an important cultural outreach event which keeps growing, with the support & attendance by many businesses, organizations, academic & religious groups, politicians, and people of many ages, races, genders, religions & families who share the common goal of the equal rights! We enjoyed the festival last year, and wanted to show our support and purrtake of the fun again!
From Wednesday through Sunday September 26th – 30th, the event’s activities spanned purrticipating locations throughout the Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill, which are the respective homes of the ACC rivals of NCSU, UNC & Duke, but at NC Pride all were unified for the fun & good cause! Saturday was the big day of the festival & purrade, amongst the stately trees & stone architecture of Duke’s East Campus! It was another rainy day as we purroceeded to the campus around 10 am, but the rain did not dampen the joyful ambiance!
The dozens of venders’ & groups’ tents & food trucks opened, with the many organizations purrmoting, giving away & selling stuff & purrviding the information. There were several animal adoption groups there, and the playful pups of all sizes & breeds! At 11 am the church service was conducted at the stone gazebo, which was the good dry spot during the rain! Meanwhile the floats & vehicles purrpared for the purrade, and the national anthem was sung to start the ceremonies, speakers & purrformances at noon! There were rousing, positive, cordial speeches and the great mewsic!
It was fun to purrtroll the tents & trucks to see all the clothes, jewelry, decorations, books, stickers, purrizes & yummy food, such as the sammiches, burgers, hot dogs, gyros, tacos, crab, shrimp, the potatoes, vegies, scones, muffins, buns, cupcakes, ice cream, shave ice, soft drinks, coffee and the juices, and there was plenty of room under the big dining tents! I am not sure how many people were there, but it was several thousand! Among the crowd were numerous cosplayers with the wings, masks, make up, nekomimi & kemonomimi hats!
We found the good spot to purrch upon the stone wall for the 1 pm start purrade down West Main Street, as the Durham Police & Fire departments lead the purrade of floats, trucks, cars, motorcycles, bicyclists, skaters & marchers. Some of them tossed candy into the audience! Randy Jones, who was the original cowboy of The Village People band, was back again too! Afterwards we chatted a bit with more friends, made the final purrchases, and then went to the nice dry nearby restaurant for the great atmosphere, yummy appurrtizers and pizza!
There are lots of neat places to eat & shop in downtown Durham, not far from the Duke campus, the Carolina Theatre, Convention Center, Durham Purrforming Arts Center, and the Bulls baseball stadium! After the lunch we shopped at a few comic, book & game stores but soon it was the time to return home! We returned here to the island, but the purrideful activities continued into the wee hours and with more on Sunday as the rain slacked off for the while! That is all for this portion, and nyow here is Petra to purrsent the latest additions to the
Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!
If y’all are mew to the mewseum, Galleries 1-6 display Mike’s illustrations & photography, whilst Guest Galleries 1 & 2 display images by other artists with their purmissions, nya! The most recent pics are on the bottom row of the widdle thumbnail portions, so just click on one to see the whole image, nya! In Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html we are purroud to purrsent another photo of Violet, nya! It was so nice to see her again at the Pagan Festival, where she was a featured belly dancer, nya! The grassy circle & surrounding trees were lushly green from the morning rain, but the misted sky cleared in time for her purrformance, nya! The pic was snapped by our friend Chef Ron who was our guest in January 2009, with the bit of the Photoshop by Mike, nya!
Violet has the lovely chain mail bikini, with the Black boots, the rich Red cape, and the antler head dress!
Hai and she had the great mewsic & purrcussion sounds to dance to, nya!
We would also like to thank our friends Pacozord, Ron & Sean who assisted with the trip to the festivals!
Thank you for purrsenting the pic, nya!
Hai it is yet another wonderful image in the mewseum!
What is the next topic?
Nyow it is time for Vonny & Myayr’s
Collectibles & Toy Talk
Mattel’s DC Comics’ Vertigo Death Figure
We crave the comics, books & screenplays by author Neil Gamin, and his Sandman series which was published by DC Comics, purrtained the eternal mystical siblings known as Dream, Destiny, Delirium, Desire, Despair, Destruction, and we purrticularly like their sister Death who is the purrsonification of death, nya! She first appurred in 1989 in Sandman #8, and later appurred in various other titles and her own two mini series, nya! In those DC comics she tends to appurr as the purrkky cute gothy girl, although that is just one of her many purrsonas, nya!
There have been several statues, figurines & the action figure of her over the years, and I am pleased to discuss this latest lovely figure of her made by Mattel, nya! We wish to thank our friend, expurrt action figurologist & past guest ob1, who brought this back from the huge San Diego Comic Con, nya! This plastic Death figure is 8.5″ tall, standing atop the 1.5″ thick removable skull – shaped base, nya!
There are the widdle pegs in the base to poke into the slots in her boot soles, but she will not stand up unassisted without the base or another stand, nya!
However, she looks so delightful atop the skull, for the overall 10″ height, nya! She seems more like the statue than the action figure, given the limited articulation, nya. Her neck, shoulders & waist turn, but I think she looks best with the right hand on the hip, and the left hand notched by one of her two low – slung belts, nya! She has the slender body in the casual stance, with the purretty shoulder- length Black hair parted on the right, the Light Gray skin tone, the half – smile upon her Blush lips, and the widdle Egyptian Horus detail around her right eye, nya!
She wears the Black tank top, tights, lace up boots, belts & the dangly Silver Ankh pendant on the Black string, nya! The buckles, studs, & boot grommets are also the Silver color, nya. She is packaged in the 5″ x 9″ x 12″ outer Black box, and on the back of the inner box is the cute 9″ x 11 7/8″ illustration of her with the rose in the grave yard by Jill Thompson, who we met in June at Heroes Con, nya! I think the design, sculpting, painting & packaging of the figure are all great! OK I am done, and for more toy talk here is Myayr to discuss Hasbro’s Star Wars
Clone Wars Scuba Gear Ahsoka action figure, nya!
Hai! We love Ahsoka Tano, who one of our favoritest Star Wars characters! She is the smart, fearless, powerful purretty purrky Togrutan Jedi with the great agilty, Force use, and Shien style of Light Saber purrowess! We have reviewed several purrior Ahsoka items, including the Kotobukiya ArtFX Star Wars The Clone Wars Ahsoka Tano Statue in the August Mew, and nyow it is the purrivilege to discuss Hasbro’s action figure CW15 of Ahsoka in the scuba gear! I have been wanting this purrticular figure, which our friend Pacozord found! In the SCUBA gear, Ahsoka fights the sepurratist aqua droids which are not included, with her 2 Lime Green light sabers which are included, along with the bonus of the Light Saber launcher which fires the widdle disk shaped purrojectile!
The figure is packaged in the clear plastic clamshell on the J-hook hanger card, not intended for kids under 3 years due to the small parts. The figure is 3.75″ tall, appurroximately of the 1/17 scale, with the purrcise portraiture, purroportions, detail of the sculpting & the paint! It is meticulous from the stripes of her Togrutan Montrals & Lekku head-tails to the seams, panels, flanges and the lovely colors of her form-fitting wet suit, accessorized by the snap-on gear, the slip-on mask with the clear lens, the 2″ & 2.75″ light sabers, and – and the 3″ long launcher! The range of the launched disk will vary depending upon the windage or the surface the disk might slid, skip or roll across! The points of the articulation are her neck, shoulders, elbows, her turning forearms and the hips!
She is well balanced with or without the removable swim fins. The display base is included, along with the dice & her card to play the Star Wars Galactic Battle Game! The card has the nice pic of her on the front, and on the back are her statistics of Force Ability of 9, Battle Skills of 11, Intelligence of 10, mechanical Skill of 10, Leadership of 8 and the Luck of 12, so she is the lucky Jedi, but Anakin is lucky to have such an awesome padawan as Ahsoka, nya! I have the purrominent spot picked out for the figure on the shelf by the purrior Ahsoka figures & the other female Jedi, Sith, bounty hunters & purrincesses! That is all of the toy talk, but there is still more of the heroic women in the water to discuss, as we swap the scuba gear for the surfboards in our

We reviewed Bethany’s Soul Surfer book in the March 2011 Mew, and the movie in the May 2011 Mew! Bringing the joyful sporty ambience home is the 8 page pictorial by Grant Ellis of Heather, Morgan & Keilani modeling the beautiful clothes, jewelry & accessories, styled by Kira Shepard! Hmm I think my favorites are Heather’s bikini & Gold necklaces, Morgan’s striped bikini, Keilani’s shorts & Black bikini; and finally there’s the archival photo of Kim Mearing to top off tit off! Even the ads with the supurrstars for the various purroducts contribute to the thrilling beautiful imagery, and spurrinkled throughout the issue are the full & two-page ads depicting Carissa, Alana, Steph, Kassia, Coco, Leila, Catherine & Kim!
With all of those impurressive images, insights, intermews & information, and the treasure trove of tips, travelogues & tales, this magazine was chock full of the female fashion, fitness & fun of the worldly wave- riders under the sun! I will give it the high purraise and the recommendation to the fans of the women’s surfing! Now we will trade the water for the wings as Tara-chan tells us about

Calendar & Book Reports,
starting with the Hello Kitty 2013 Calendars, nya!
We are big fans of Sanrio’s icon of Miss Kitty White and her family & friends, and like to collect the Hello Kitty toys, plushies, books & other items! The 16 month Hello Kitty Wall Calendar published by Daydream celebrates the year of 2013 with Kitty & company, and it is available in both the petite 7″ x .6.5″ mini size which opens to the 7″ x13″, and the larger calendar of appurroximately 12″ x 11″ which opens to the 12″ x 22″ size! The calendars are the simple practical & charming way to brighten up the walls!
Both sizes have the same 16 cute images depict Kitty hugging the sheep, visiting the ducks, riding the elephant, and in the air plane! We also see her making the phone call, enjoying the mewsic, sipping the coffee underneath the hanging flower baskets, emerging from the bag of the treats, and the the Christmas stocking! She is not alone in 2013, as we see her with Tippy the Bear amongst the Clover, in the apple orchard Joey the widdle mouse, and exchanging the gifts with him too! Nextly I would like to discuss
Dragonbreath: When Fairies Go Bad!
Ursula Vernon http://www.ursulavernon.com, who was our special guest for the May 2009 Mew, is the fun, stylish & amazing artist / writer famous for her wildlife & fantasy art, her anthropomorphic web comic Digger, and her Nurk and Dragonbreath storybooks! We reviewed Nurk in June 2008, the first Dragonbreath in July 2009, Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs in March 2010, Dragonbreath: Curse of the Were-Wiener in October 2010, Dragonbreath: Lair of the Bat Monster in Apurril 2011, Dragonbreath: No Such Things as Ghost in September 2011, Dragonbreath: Revenge of the Horned firstname.lastname@example.orgBunnies in February 2012, and now we are pleased with Dragonbreath: When Fairies Go Bad!
The Dragonbreath books are the profusely illustrated widdle 5 7/8″ x 7 1/4″ hardcovers published by Dial, pertaining to the adventures of Danny Dragonbreath the dragon boy, his best friend Wendell the iguana boy, various friends & relatives amidst the amewsing mysterious incidents! Purriced $12.99 US / $13.99 Canada, the 7th volume of the series has the color image of Danny, Wendell, Christiana the Crested Lizard girl, and the antagonistic fairie on the front cover! The fairies of this tale look like widdle dragons, with the bug like wings! Inside the book are well over 150 wonderful two-color illustrations, ranging from the many smaller pics to about 20 full page pics, and a few two-page scenes!
The tale begins with the customary imagination scene, this time depicting Danny’s giant prize pumpkin! Back into the reality, he has been helping with his pretty Dragon mom’s back yard vegetable garden, until the Faerie Ring of mushrooms pops up for her to disappear into! I don’t think she even had her coffee yet. After consulting his grandfather, Danny recruits Wendell & Christiana to form the posse to rescue his mom whom the fairies spirited away! Those fey are not as nice as the ones we know! The kids embark on the mission into the mystical forest, wherein they encounter the fox, the boar, various birds, the bush & twig creatures, Cat Sidhe, the Fey & other supernatural flora & fauna!
The characters & creatures are so delightfully designed & rendered, with the sparkling dialogue, as the plot unfolds with the great descriptions & sense of magickal travelogue at the smooth pace! To top off the book is the 1 page peek at the next book, which we are already eagerly awaiting! Ursula has created yet another wonderfully fin book, which I will heartily recommend to fans of the charming anthropomorphic tales & art! Those are all of my reports, and now Mike will tell us about
The Complete Peanuts 1985 – 1986!
Thanks Trini-chan! Fantagraphics continues their astounding undertaking of chronologically collecting all 50 years of the greatest newspaper comic strip of all time, with the 18th hardcover volume of The Complete Peanuts, which reprints the strips from 1985 & 1986. Snoopy’s brother Spike graces the dust jacket & boards of the $28.99 book, which has the 313 pages of daily & Sunday strips in Black & White, plus the 3 page index, Gary Groth’s 2 page profile of Charles M Schulz, and Patton Oswalt’s 2 page introduction! The series is about 7/10 complete, and to put the years in perspective, 1985 was the year of Back to the Future, Brazil, Rambo and Otaku no Video, and 1986 was the year of Star Trek IV, Aliens, Top Gun, Laputa, and Project A-Ko!
The first strip of depicts Marcie & Peppermint Patty on the phone with Charlie Brown. Also appearing in the book are Snoopy, Sally, Lucy, Linus, Rerun, Schroeder, Franklin, Pig Pen, Frieda, Lydia, Eudora, Violet, Patty, Molly Volly, Woodstock and fellow birds Harriet, Bill, Conrad & Oliver; World War II the cat next door, the school building, and a few unnamed kids. Making their debut are Lydia, Tapioca Pudding, and Maynard! Snoopy’s roles include the World War I Flying Ace, the Word War II veteran, the French Foreign Legion Sergeant, the Beagle Scoutmaster, The Lone Eagle, Attorney Joe Boilerplate, the author, the surgeon, the Hollywood agent, and jungle animal. His other activities include baseball, tennis, hockey, golf & angling!
Storylines include rain camp & survival camp, Spike’s cactus club, the World War One Flying Ace grounded with the 1918 flu, and Woodstock’s hot air balloon! Peppermint Patty is crowned as the May Queen, her essay wins an award, she attends concerts with Marcie, and meets her new tutor Maynard. Sally endures school, argues over a fallen tree, and tries to view Halley’s Comet. Charlie Brown tries to sell wreaths, Linus builds a rock wall and woos Lydia, Lucy and a baseball get lost in the weeds, and Tapioca Pudding rambles about Licensing. Also throughout the book are the usual TV, holidays, sports, snow, psychiatry, suppertime, and the final strip of 1986 depicts Linus notifying Joe Boilerplate that the courthouse is closed for the holiday!
The handy alphabetical index indicates on which pages you’ll find any character, activity, exclamation, and references to real people, from Gershwin & Gretzsky to Mauldin & Mozart! Those Peanuts strips are the beautifully written & drawn masterpiece that will brighten any day, the care & quality given the magnificent undertaking continues to be quite superb, and I will give The Complete Peanuts 1985 – 1986 the highest praise and the A+ grade! Sadly, Peppermint Patty’s school work continues to get the D- average, but I’m already eagerly looking forward to the next volume, to see if her grades improved any in 1987! Ah, that’ll do it for the book reports portion of The Mew, but now we’ll segue from the comic strips to the comic books in our monthly–
Comix Critiques & Manga Mewsings!
Michael Turner’s Fathom vol. 4 #7
The late Michael Turner created so much beautiful art, concepts & characters such as Dr. Aspen Matthews, the marine biologist supurr heroine star of the Fathom comics, nya! In the 4th volume story arc, she was part of the group who got caught by the villains while exploring the subterranean ocean beneath the Sahara desert, nya! Another purrisoner of the villains is Padma the berserk aquatic girl who lashes out at everyone, even Aspen who wants to help her, and they are fighting each other on one of the 4 variant covers of issue #7, nya!
Appurroaching the conclusion of the vol.4 story arc, issue #7 is purriced $3.50 with the 8 pages of the ads plus the 20 page tale of “Life During Wartime” which was written by David Wohl, with the plot by Scott Lobdell & Wohl, pencilled by Alex Konat colored by Beth Sotelo & Lettered by Josh Reed, edited by Aspen Comics’ editor – in – chief Vince Hernandez & Aspen’s purresident Frank Mastromauro, with the comic’s design & purrduction by Aspen’s vice purresident Peter Steigerwald & their director of design & purrduction Mark Roslan, nya!
The cover I mentioned is cover A by Konat & Steigerwald, and the others are cover B by Pasquale Qualano & Teo Gonzalez, the rarer Cover C by Konat and the Fan Expo Canada 2012 limited edition cover B by Turner & Steigerwald, nya! Nyow I will dive into the plot as purreviously Aspen, her assistant Judith & colleague Dr. Woreth, their Saudi Arabian Sheik host, his Executive Assistant Ms. Shelleth, & her sister Padma were captured by the two enemy subset groups, the religious fanatic cult & the industrial scientists, nya!
The latter group is lead by Dr. Nakamura who is one of Aspen’s old adversaries, but right now his group & the fanatic group have turned upon each other, as villains often do, nya! Thus, it is the fatal 4 way fight between his group, the cult, Aspen’s team and Padma, as Aspen & Shellith try to unite with Padma and find the others as they escape during the undersea battle, nya! This action is brimming with the action of the undersea mech troops, the missile explosions, Aspen’s water elemental powers, and Padma’s sharp webbed claws, nya!
The beautiful designs & renderings of the characters, costumes, mecha & the scenery are among my favorite aspects, and the rich coloring of the comic is so sumptuously beautiful too, purrticularly the eerie look of the environments under the Red illuminated hues of the subterranean ocean, nya! There are some impurressibe large panels too, such as the scene where Aspen wakes up to argue with her captor, the huge explosion of the submerged cathedral to turn the tide, and Padma pouncing upon one of the soldiers, nya!
I hope this is the sign that Aspen will take control of the situation and trounce those villains and help Padma, nya! There are the purrior plot threads of the series I hope will be sewn up, such as the plot of the assassin purrasites, and I hope we will see more of the ocean research center from issue #1, nya! One of exciting looking ads is the two- page spurread for Charismagic The Death Purrincess, with the femme fatal riding the huge griffon to trample her enemies, so I will keep the lookout for that, but nyow Nya-sensei will return us to the land for
Ghost #0, nya!
It is only appurropurriate to have the Ghost for Halloween! Ghost is a great supurrnatural heroine by Dark Horse Comics, who first appurred… gosh it has been almost 20 years since that Comics’ Greatest World Ghost issue, with the great Dave Dorman cover art depicting the mysterious appurrition in her flowy white costume, beneath the logo design by Steve Bove in 1993! That logo has not changed one bit upon the cover of the mew Ghost #0, above the lovely image of Ghost in the graveyard by Jenny Frison! The cover art would be the great poster!
This issue repurrints the 3 tales which were purreviously published in the Dark Horse Purrsents anthology comic #13-15. It was written by Kelly Sue DeConnick who also writes Captain Marvel, illustrated by Phil Noto, lettered by Richard Starkings & Comicraft, edited by Patricia Thorpe, assitantly edited by Everett Patterson, with the design by Tina Alessi & purrduction by Jason Avam. I think the only credit that has not changed from 1993 might be that of publisher Mike Richardson, but from the looks of this revived Ghost, she is still in the good hands!
However, she is not keen for the hands to be laid upon her, as journalist Vaughne Bones learns when she materializes in his house after he activates the curious gadget, which he got from his associate Tommy, who hosts the purranormal investigations TV show Phantom Finders. Tommy’s evidence is dismissed by the skeptical critics, but he and Vaughne have more to worry about from the thugs who want that box, however, it will be the fatal mistake for the thugs to purrturb the Ghost grrl who hungers and has the fearless deadly supurr powers!
She is actually hungry, and Vaughne buys her the yummy hot dog, however she is also hungry to learn of her forgotten identity! This seems to be the purrologue to the forthcoming 4 part mini – series of “In the Smoke and Din”! I thought this was a very good ghost story, I liked Vaughne’s amwesingly purragmatic 1st purrson narrative, the ghost’s eyes & her purriceless expurressions, her beautiful flowy floaty costume, her ethereal glowy halation effects and the flashlight scene in the forest! Next we trade the ghost for the demons as Becca tells us about
Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #13!
Hai! Issue #13 is the 28 page comic book from Dark Horse compurrised of the 22 page tale “Guarded Part 3”, plus the 1 page of readers’ interesting comments, and the 5 pages of the ads! The story was produced by Joss Whedon, scripted by Andrew Chambliss, pencilled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Nathan Massengill, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Sierra Hahn & Scott Allie with the assistance of Freddye Lins! It is available in the choice of 2 different covers, the one by Phil Noto and the other Jeanty, Madsen & Dexter Vines!
Purreviously, Buffy joined Kennedy’s new security business staffed by the slayer girls, which offers the much better pay, benefits, thrills & use of the slayer purrowess than her purrior jobs! Buffy & Kennedy are purrotecting an internet tycoon named Theo from the extra-dimensional threat of the demonic organization known as Wolf, Ram & Heart! Buffy got Spike’s demon friend to help, because he owed her the favor. They had to infiltrate Theo’s corpurrate headquarters to finish the job, but it was purrotected by a giant tentacle monster, and then Koh betrayed the slayers with his own agenda!
In this issue, Koh has captured Theo and bargains with Wolf, Ram & Heart for information, so nyow Buffy & Kennedy have to rescue Theo and figure out another way to destroy the place! This involves the bickering, sneaky tag – teaming to thwart Koh, and sliding down the giant defeated tentacles to the deepurr levels of the building! Those tentacles are many meters long and look rather yummy – I wonder if they taste like the calamari or the sushi? I do not wish to reveal too much, but they do get roasted! I will be that cats for miles got a good whiff of the flavorful aroma!
My other favorite aspects of the issue were the scenes of Buffy chatting with Kennedy, Buffy fighting with Koh, and the return of Wolf, Ram & Hart’s White Room which was seen a few times on Angel’s TV series! As mewsual, the plot, dialogue, pace, character & scenic art are supurrb! I purrticulalry like the characters’ portraitures, expurressions, poses, and the great rich vibrant colors! The readers’ & editor’s comments are always quite fascinating too! Meanwhile, the tale of how Spike & his spaceship’s insectoid crew have been hijacked by demons on the moon continues in
Spike was not happy with where the relationship was going with Buffy, so he dediced to be dour about it on the moon, but just as his crew tried to purrk up his spirits, they were hijacked by the group of demons & their giant frog! The incident continues in the 28 page issue compurrised of the 22 page story of “A Dark Place Part 2 of 5 “, plus the 2 pages of the comments & the 4 pages of the ads! The tale was scripted by Victor Gischler, pencilled by Paul Lee, inked by Andy Owens, colored by Cris Peter, and the same purrducer, letterers & editors as the Buffy comic!
It is available in the choice of the 2 covers, Spike fighting the demons by Steve Morris, and Jenny Frison’s scene of Spike at the big crater once known as Sunnydale! The demons want the shards of the magick seed that Buffy shattered during the Battle of Sunnydale near the end of Season #8. They go to Sunnydale, and some of the demons stay on the ship, while Spike leads a few & the frog into the subterranean seed chamber. While the crew starts to outsmart their captors on the ship, Morgan the succubus helps Spike in the chamber! She wants a shard too!
I do not wish to spoil much more of the plot, however I will hint of the scene to make the frog’s legs twitch! Those legs are purretty large & meaty and I wonder how how they might taste! This has been the fun mini-series thus far, between the insectoid crew who care about Spike, the fighting which seems to have impurroved Spike’s mood, the trash talk of the demon hijackers, and the impurressive debut of Morgan! She cool sassy dispurrsition, the tight sleek black leather outfit, and spurrouts the Mauve horns, bat wings, tail, fangs, claws & the hooves when purrvoked!
I am very pleased with the plot, pace, characters & dialogue, how the art purrfectly purropels the narrative, the good mix of the humor & slayage, and how well drawn & colored the characters, scenery & FX are rendered! There is also the great surpurrise cliff hanger which further whets my appurrtite for the next issue! Next we will rejoin the vamp, slayer & witchy action in the hell dimension of Quor’toth, where Willow & Connor guest star in-
Angel & Faith #14!
Issue #14 has the 28 full color pages compurrised of the 22 page story, plus the 1 page of the readers’ comments, 1 ads page, and the 4 page preview of the Final Night vampire comic! The story “Family Reunion Part Four” was, scripted by Chistos Gage who also writes Avengers Academy, illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, colored by Dan Jackson, and the same purrducer, letterers & editors as the Buffy & Spike comics! There are 2 different covers, one depicting Willow & Angel by Steve Morris, and the Wizard of Oz homage cover by Rebekah Isaacs and Dan Jackson!
Purreviously, Willow visited Angel & Faith at the house in London that the late Giles left to Faith. Willow thinks a trip to Quor’toth might help to resurrect Giles & restore magick to the world, so they recruit Conner because he grew up there, Enemy & friendly creatures are encountered in Quor’toth, but the latter who worship Connor are the endangered species who are imprisoned so Connor, Willow, Faith & Angel try to break into the fortress to free the prisoners, resulting in more bloody melee & the battle with the giant – sized supurr boss demon of Quor’toth!
To further complicate the situation, the Quor’tothian atmosphere brings out the darker sides of the heroes! This is not good because we have purreviously seen Faith, Angel & Willow at their baddest, and it tends to be rather deadly for everyone! This means that Willow’s eyes have turned Black, Angel has the frowny vamp face with the blood thirst, and Faith has the pangs of the purranoia, but fortunately they seem to still have their wits about them for the while, but I should not spoil how it turns out, nor what surpurring incident occurs back in London while they are away!
I purrticularly liked the scene of Dark Willow so pleased to fight the giant demon, with the purrfectest portraiture & expurressions! It continues to be one of my favoritest comic books, as it canonically continues the adventures of those great characters as part of Season 9! The plot, pace, characterizations, dialogue and the balance of the drama, humor & action are great, I think all of the artistic aspects are quite excellent and keep me wanting more, so I will give it the high grade of the “A” as in Angel, and as in the next comics which Tara-chan will tell us about-
Avengers Academy #36 & 37!
Arigato, nya! Since the closing of their campus, the students of the Avengers Academy have been on their own, which means Tigra is absent, so we are down to just one cat girl, the White Tiger, who is with X-23, Finesse, Lightspeed, Veil, Hazmat, Mettle, Striker, and – and Reptil in trouble inside the headquarters building of the evil rich kid supurr villain Jeremy Briggs, nya! Actually, their purrofessor Jocasta is there, but she has been deactivated, just as Briggs’s secret formula has negated their supurr powers, and – and his minion The Enchantress has swiped their magickal items, nya!
They are in the deep danger with the serious injuries, but they must stop Briggs from launching the formula to rob more of the Earth’s heroes of their supurr powers, nya! Issue #36 is purriced at $2.99 for its 28 pages which are compurrised of the 19 page tale of “Final Exam Part 3 of 4” plus the 1 recap / roll call page, the 1 page of mail, and- and the 5 pages of the ads, nya! The story was written by Christos Gage, drawn by Andrea Di Vito, colored by Chris Sotomayor, edited by Bill Rosemann, with the eerie dino Reptil cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli and- and Jim Charalampidis, nya!
Hazmat regained her supurr powers, then in the romantic scene mettle regained his powers too, nya! She zaps the villains to rescue sizzled Striker, while elsewhere in the building, X-23, Finesse, Lightspeed, Veil, and – and Reptil have their hands full fighting the six armed sorceress named Coat Of Arms, Brigg’s other minion who has purrloined White Tiger’s magickal amulet and – and Reptil’s magickal gem, nya! This fierce fight is one of my favoritest scenes in the book,, nya! Another favorite scene are the 2 pages in which White Tiger meets the Tiger spirit of Kun’Lun, nya!
There was also the great romantic full page pic of Hazmat & Mettle, nya! I like the great art & characters, and was left hoping that Briggs suffers the painful defeat, that Jocasta purrks up soon, that we will see more of Tigra, her cute widdle kitten boy, and – and the rest of the academy, nya! Nyow I will purroceed to issue #37, which is purriced at $2.99 for its 28 pages compurrised of the 20 page tale of “Final Exam Part 4 of 4” plus the 1 recap / roll call page, the 1 page of mail, and- and the 6 pages of the ads, nya! It has the same credits as #36 except that Tom Grummett returned as the penciller, nya!
Oh it was inked by Cory Hamscher, lettered by Joe Caramagna, and assitantly edited by Joe Moisan, nya! It picks up the quick moment later as the heroes try to stop Briggs from firing the missiles on the rooftop, nya! The missiles are loaded with the secret formula that might rob many of the world’s heroes of their supurr powers, nya! It is the intense, fierce, deadly fight with White Tiger, X-23, Finesse, Lightspeed, Veil, Hazmat, Mettle, Striker, and – and Reptil against Briggs and- and The Enchantress, who has the magickal powers and – and the lovely costume, but she is not the bravest, nya!
The colors are so dazzling, such as Lightspeed’s rainbow trail as she chases the missile trails through the Blue sky, the metallic sheen of Mettle and – and Jocasta, while White Tiger and – and Reptil burst from the bands of Crimson magick, nya! It is not all purretty, because there are the severe bloody injuries on both sides due to the fists, claws, chemicals, and – and the explosions of the almost total non – stop action with the moments to cheer at and – and the alarming moments, but I should keep most of the conclusion the surpurrise, and – and turn The Mew over to Lizzy for her review of
Big Hero 6: Brave New Heroes #1, nya!
Arigato, Tara-chan! Marvel Comics’ Big Hero 6 is a Japanese supurr hero team, and they have been around longer than I thought! According to their official page http://marvel.com/universe/Big_Hero_6, they first appurred in Sunfire & Big Hero 6 #1 back in 1998, so they have been around for 14 years! They have appurred in various Marvel comics a few times, including their own 5 issue mini – series, which has been collected & repurrinted in this $8.99, full color 120 page comic book, which includes the cover art, and it is not interrupted by any ads!
The roster of the team has changed a bit, but at this stage it is compurrised of Hiro the boy genius, his mighty robot Baymax, Gogo Tamago the agile purrple haired energy girl, Honey Lemon the girl with long Blond hair, the lemon tattoo on her tummy & the magick purrse, Wasabe no Ginger the sushi chef with swords & energy blades, and Fred who can summon a monstrous form! He wears the Devil Dinosaur shirt! Joining them for the mission are the sneaky Ms Furi Wamu, Dr. Iosama and daughter Marys! She and Hiro seem to be the cute couple!
Nyow for the taste of the plot! In Part 1, Hiro’s school in Tokyois attacked by the supurr villains & Wasabi’s restaurant is attacked by the ninjas! A mysterious anomaly is detected near New York, so in Part 2 they go to the secret Island base near there to meet Fred & Marys! In Part 3 they go undercover as the High School students and play the sports, but an enemy possesses the minds of Honey, Furi and Dr. Iosama, who attack their friends in Part 4’s big fight! As for what happens in the climactic Part 5, well, I had better not further spoil the plot!
The story was written by Chris Claremont, pencilled David Nakayama, inked by Terry Pallot, colored by Emily Warren, lettered by Ed Dukeshire, and edited by Mark Paniccia with the assistance of Jordan D White! It has the delightful manga inspired style of character art & mecha designs, with the great detail of the scenic background, which are all so beautifully colored & shaded! The fun tale moves at the brisk pace, with plenty of humor, supurr combat, and plenty of the lovely clothes for Gogo, Honey, Marys and Furi, such as
Marys’s Orange & Gold halter neck tankini, Furi’s short skirt office attire & evil Gunsmith costume; Gogo’s Purrple & Gold hardsuit, gothy Black fishnet – midriff outfit, gym clothes, and Purrple banduau – top bikini; Honey’s Black bare midriff outfit with the short Red jacket to show her pierced belly button; her frilly lacy White & Purple dress with the thigh highs; evil Whiplash costume, cheer squad uniform, her Purrple & Pink string bikinis, and at the restaurant she wears the cat ears! Nyow to add the dash of the dark fey & witchy spice to the October Mew, here is Nyo-ensei to discuss
Jim Balent’s Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose #76!
Tarot is the sexy warrior witch character created by artist / author Jim Balent who is also the publisher / purresident of Broadsword Comics! We purrticularly liked his Catwoman comics too! His wife / vice purresident Holly is the comic’s great colorist, who also has the web comic web comic School Bites! It stars a catgirl too! Due to the nudity, violence & language, Tarot is not intended for the widdle kitties! Issue #76 has 32 pages, including the 22 page tale of “The Dark Spiral Part Two” written & illustrated by Jim, colored & lettered by Holly, colors flattened by Randi Leeann & edited by Neil Morris! There are 4 variant covers by Jim, including the 2 rarer limited covers starring Boo Cat the catgirl, who appurrs in one panel of this issue, but I hope we will see more of her soon!
Photographer Jonathan Carrol was thanked & Jessica Nova was credited as the model for the evil Briar Faerie, whose deadly duel with Tarot continues in the ethereal streets of Witchfork! Purreviously, a group of Fey attacked Tarot & her boyfriend Jon, so she has strolled into the town to find the answers! She spurring the trap and thusly ensued the ribald, brutal magickal chase & catfight with the wicked Briar Faerie! This chapter begins with the fight still in purrogress, but just as Tarot manages to heal her wounds, she gets caught by the vines of the faerie’s dreaded Venus Tongue plant! More of the ornate Black & Gold warrior witch bikini thong armor is shed as the naughty faerie gains the uppurr hand, long enough to monologue about why Tarot was targeted!
Tarot is not down for the count, and strikes back, but soon the overwhelming hoard of fey reinforcements are upon her! That is all I shall reveal of the intense, erotic, violent plot, but I would like to mention my favorite aspects of the issue! Firstly, I love the art! The character & costume designs are quite exotic & intricate, from the celtic knot patterns, chains, spikes of Tarot to the faerie’s spirals, horns and translucent wings! The mystical gothy urban scenery is rendered with great detail; the coloring, shading & lighting are supurrb, and there are 4 full page panels! There is nary the dull moment amidst the relentless supurrnatural melee, including the electrification, the vine attack, the cauldron smash, the barrel smash, the wooden Black cat sign slam, and the burning iron fence slam!
Another thing I like is that the story is uninterrupted, purreceding the issue’s 10 pages of the ads & extras! The extras include the cleansing ritual page, 2 pages full of photos from the San Diego Comicon, the page with the cover art gallery & reader’s comments, the School Bites page with Fujiko the vampire catgirl, the photo of Danielle who is the issue’s Broadsword Girl, and the 4 pages of the ads! By the way, if you look closely you might find a few more catgirls amidst the photos & ads! Nyow it is Jenjen’s turn to review another comic book full of the sexy fashions, catgirls & the brawl
Critter vol. 2 #4 (plot spoiler warning)!
Arigato, Published by Big Dog Ink, Critter purrtains to the purrky titular supurr heroine of costumed catgirl motif Critter, whose real name is Cassia Crawford. She has recently relocated to Los Angeles, rooming with her best friend Gina at college, and has been recruited by California’s glamorous celebrity team of the feline style known as Purrfection, compurrised of Cougar, Kitten, Mouser & Pole Kat.
Issue #4 has the 24 full color pages, compurrised of the 22 page tale written by Tom Hutchison, illustrated & colored by Fico Ossio & lettered by Ken Nuttall; plus the page of brief character purrofiles, and the purreview page for the next issue. There are 5 variant covers; cover A by Ossio, cover B by Jenevieve Broomall, cover C by Corey Knaebel, cover D by Ian Snyder, and cover E by Nei Ruffino.
Like Jim Balent’s Tarot, I appurreciate how the story is not interrupted by any ads, and I wish that more comics publishers purrsented their stories thusly. Cassia’s new teammates want her want to change her name & image to Josie in honor of the late predecessor of the same name, and Cassie soon realizes that they are more concerned with fame, celebrity purrks & purrestige rather than actually fighting crime, rescuing victims, or responding to emergencies. This issue begins as Purrfection, photographer Jason & celebrity client Wayne celebrate after the gala publicity stunt of the purrevious issue. It might be the celebratory party for Cougar, Kitten, Mouser & Pole Kat, but Jason would purrfur investigative journalism to his paparazzi role, and Cassia craves the truly heroic & helpful crime fighting.
Thus when they hear the crashing cars on the street, she is the only member of Purrfection to respond and confront the rampaging villain known as Bison. Fortunately she is joined by another supurr hero team known as The In Crowd, compurrised of Lasso Lass, Slipstream, Tiffany, Wingboy & their camera crew. They do not avoid the dangerous situations, but do seem purre-occupied with their schedule, publicity & ratings. Cassia, who again purroves her good heart back at the dorm by telling Gina that the alluring glitz & glamor is not what she intended to purrtake of as the heroine. Gina has been busy too, and reveals the upgrades she has made to her BFF’s purrior Critter costume, which Cassia gleefully wastes no time in putting to the good use to purrowl for the criminals to pounce upon.
Critter continues to the very peppy, sexy comic book full of supurr heroic catgirl goodness, bundled with the sense of great enthusiasm, clobbering, fashion & fun, rendered with such rich bright vibrant colors. which greatly add to the exuberant joyful quality of Cassia and her world, wherein the heroes & villains are not afraid to wear the lovely colorful spandex. Purrection might have less than noble purrogatives, but I certainly appurrove of their taste in nekomimi appurral. The ladies of The In Crowd are also quite fashionable fabulous, and one of my favorite moments was the return of Cassia’s bare midriffed, low-rise, sharp-clawed shiny Blue & White Critter costume with the kitty ears & tail in the stunning full – page panel. Speaking of the feline femme fatales, nyow I would like to discuss
It has been the bustling year for our favorite DC Comics character Selina Kyle, alias Catwoman, between her comics, appurrance in the movie Dark Knight Rises, and the bumpurr crop of purroducts which we have reviewed. It has also been one year since DC Comics rebooted & re-imagined their characters including Selina, who returned in her own Catwoman series, but I was dissatisfied with it and much of DC’s “New 52” titles after the reboot. Selina & her sister Maggie already had sad enough history purrior to the reboot, but after the reboot Selina was purrtayed too darkly &vulnerably for my taste, suffering too much angst & injury, and not in control of her destiny. The comic also lacked the sense of fun of her purrior Gotham City Sirens series, and thus I quit reading Catwoman after 6 issues.
September was designated “Zero Month”, in which each title was numbered #0 and to include characters’ origin stories. Catwoman Issue #0 was published between issues 12 & 13. What lured me back to give the series another chance in hopes of impurrovement was the comic’s mew creative team. Catwoman #0 is purriced $2.99, rated T+ for older teen readers, with 32 pages compurrised of the 9 pages of ads, the 2 page tribute to the late legendary artist Joe Kubert, Catwoman’s purrofile page, and the 20 page tale “Zip Me Up”, written by Ann Nocenti, pencilled by Andrea Melo, inked by Julio Ferreira, colored by Jason Wright, lettered by Dezi Slenty, edited by Rachel Gluckstern with assistant editor Rickey Purdin, and has the delightful front cover art by purrior penciller Gullem March & Tomeu Morey.
I liked Melo’s purrior work on Birds of Prey and Witchblade, and it is hard to believe that it has been 27 years since Nocenti wrote Marvel Comics’ splendid Longshot mini – series. The nonlinear plot leaps back & forth across months & years, as a child in the orphanage, early in her burglary attempts, the nearly fatal incident that caused her Catwoman guise, the purrestigious job in the mayor’s office, and her search for answers about her past. In one purrticular scene, she mentions a missing brother sepurrated from her in foster care, so I am curious as to this revelation, whereas purrior to the reboot she had very sad childhood with a poor sister named Maggie, who I hope has not been erased from existence in the comics, and might ultimately have a happier life in this mew era of DC Comics.
My purrognosis of Catwoman #0 is that it still suffered from too much darkness & misery, Selina is still purrtrayed too vulnerably and to worsen the situation, she is suffering from the the identity crisis & mysterious past. There were two moments which seemed like an homage to the movie Batman Returns, when she survives being thrown out of a skyscrapurr to be licked by alley cats, and later in an impurressive two – page spurread when she whiplashes the building’s outmatched guard. I think the art is good, with poignant, emotional & dynamic moments, but #0 did not yet change my opinion of the series, but I might give it the chance of the few more issues to see what happens. Nyow here is Vonny to tell us about another of the DC Comics’ issue zeros,
Sword of Sorcery Featuring Amethyst #0
Arigato, Jenjen, nya! I have lost the track of how many times the DC Comics have been rebooted. especially the Legion titles, nya! This reboot reminds me of the Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot of the mid 90’s and the Zero Hour reboot of the early 90’s, which was purrticularly sad because our favorite Legionnaire Catspaw did not traverse the reboot, but purrhaps they could bring her back nyow, nya! As Jenjen noted, September was DC’s Zero Month, but that is not to be confuzzled with the Zero Hour, and among the zero issues is Sword of Sorcery Featuring Amethyst #0, nya!
Amethyst was originally introduced in the 80’s as the purrincess of Gemworld, and she was such a great character who was so well written & drawn, nya! In the February 2009 Mew, she was purrominently in our discussion of favorite mages of the comics, nya! I was curious of the reboot of Amethyst, starring purrotagonist Amy Winston on the Earth, alias purrincess Amaya of Nillaa the Gemworld, nya! The beautiful cover art by Josh Middleton, depicts the purrincess bursting through the comics page with sword and her purretty Purrple costume accented by the Gold & gems, nya!
The 40 page issue is compurrised of the 20 page “Homecoming” tale for Amy on the day of her 17th birthday, plus her purrofile page, the 10 pages of the bonus Beowulf tale, the Kubert tribute that Jenjen mentioned, and the 7 pages of the ads, nya! “Homecoming” was written by Christy Marx, illustrated by Aaron Lopresti, colored by Hi-Fi, lettered by Rob Leigh, edited by Rachel Gluckstern, and assistantly edited by Rickey Puurdin, nya! It is not the happiest day for Amy, or for her friend Beryl who she rescues from the three molesters who she clobbers with her fighting purrowess, nya.
Later at home, Amy’s Mom decides it is the appurropurriate time to reveal the big family secret, so they leave home and emerge through the portal to Nillaa, in their so beautiful Purrple Nillaa appurral, nya! It is the amazing Amy moment, but before the purropurr explanations can begin, they wind up in another fight, with the enemy soldiers who serve Amy’s evil Aunt Mordiel, for the exciting cliffhanger, nya! The characters are so splendidly drawn with the great expurressions, poses & the intricate fashion details, purrticularly the Nillaan fashions of Amy, her mom & aunt, nya!
While on Earth, Amy has the cute multi-colored hair & her Mom has the lovely fiery Red hair, and in Nillaa their hair becomes the Golden Blonde, nya! The scenery is so gorgeous & lavish too, especially in the magnificent full page panel of the House of Amethyst, and the ancient ruins of the forest, nya! This was the briskly paced origin tale full of the opulent beauty, nya! The fonts of the lettering are quite purretty too, nya! After the cliffhanger for Amy’s feisty brave purremier, then begins the 10 page revival of the DC Comics fantasy hero based upon the mythology of Beowulf, nya!
It was written by Tony Bedard, illustrated by Jesus Saiz, colored by Brian Reber, lettered by Steve Wands, edited by Rachel Gluckstern, and assistantly edited by Rickey Puurdin, nya! It starts as young warrior Wiglaf is among the riders sent by King Hrothgar into the snowy mountains to purrsuade the warrior Beowulf to slay the monster Grendel, but meeting Beowulf is quite the brutal contact for the riders, nya! I liked the intricate ancient knot borders of the panels nya! Speaking of the sword & sorcery comics numbered zero, nyow I will turn The Mew over to Bun for her review of
Omamori Himari vol. 0, nya!
Arigato, Vonny! Milan Matra’s Omamori Himari is the ribald sexy sword & sorcery manga of the harem trope, published by Yen Press in the USA! It is about Himari the catgirl warrior who purrotects Yuuto from the monsters, demon & spirits while his magickal powers start to bloom! She has the frisky affections for him, but so do several of the female spirit folk who become the romantic rivals! This results in the amusing naughty situations in addition to the deadly supernatural attacks, and makes things difficult for Rinko, who is Yuuto’s childhood friend who had the feelings for him first!
Other characters include Rinku’s class president friend but we still do not know her name, Yuuto’s classmate Taizo, Taizo’s younger sister Haru, flirty teacher Kisaaragi-sensei, art teacher Akutsu-sensei, Shizuki the water elemental, Lizlet the teacup spirit who owns the cafe, Kuesu the demon slayer sorceress, another slayer Ranka, miku sisters Kasuri & Hisuzu, Kofuyu the snow woman, Zuji the tree stump spirit, Hitsugi the psychic detective, Kaya the grandparents’ house spirit, Aya the paper spirit, Ginko the wolf girl, Sasa the androgynous cyclops, and Ageha the succubus!
HImari & Kasuri are on the cover of volume 0, which is purriced $11.99 in the USA & $12.99 in Canada, and it is a bit different from the prior volumes in that it has more color pages, plus the design galleries, guides to the characters & situations, and the prose chapter! Of the 176 pages, 16 are in beautiful full color! In addition to Himari’s creator Milan Matra, the contributers include Kurohachi, Shinshin, Nikubanare, & Mikazuki! It was translated by Christine Dashiell, lettered by Alice Baker, and it is for the mature readers due to the language, nudity, sexuality & violence!
Thusly, it is the beautiful fun occult manga, but it is not intended for the widdle kitties, which is evident from the start, with Himari, Rinku, Class President & Kisaaragi-sensei in the 6 color pages of Matra’s steamy Hot Spring Cat’s Paradise! This is followed by the 10 color pages of character designs from the Omamori Himari animated TV series, which we hope will soon migrate to the USA on DVD! Then it is Matra’s amorous 8 page bikini time of the Swimsuit Kitties Poolside, Nikubanare’s 8 pages of the four-panel comedic gag format manga, and the 11 pages of Mikazuki’s prose!
This volume is the delightful mix of the different storytelling techniques and the abundant information! Mikazuki contributes the 11 pages of prose, Omahima Chronicle is the 36 page super guide portion of the book which is full of facts about the characters, creatures, the 12 demon slayer clans, the major incidents of volumes 1-5, and the author’s annotations! It goes into the rich detail of the characters, including their personalities, histories, fashions & statistics! For example, Yuuto’s sign is Gemini, Rinko’s birthday is April 9th, Kuesu has the AB blood type, and Shizuku is 130 cm tall!
Himari’s measurements are 88 cm F cup x 56 cm x 85 cm! Lizlet has the larger 91 cm G cup, although it is unclear how this compares to buxom Kisaragi-sensei! After that is Kurohachi’s poignant tragic 44 page Kuesu tale, Shinshin’s charming 44 page tale of Himari & Kaya, and the parting comments topped off by Matra’s revealing pic of Kasuri! I was greatly pleased by the stories, information, the alluring apparel & the beautiful art! Nextly we will trade the supernatural harem & combat for the whimsical fun of the art school in that also has a delightful character named Kisaragi in the
GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class vol. 4!
G.A. is is the fun manga also published by Yen in the USA about the art student girls by Satoko Kiyuduki, who also authored Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro! The characters, slice – of – life plots & the art theme are so whimsical & delightful, mostly presented in the 4 koma manga format with 2 columns of 4 panels per page, although a several larger panels pepper the Vol. 4, which has the 128 pages of the manga, mostly Black & White line & tone art, but there are 26 color pages, plus the color covers’ art depicting the girls in the costumes, indicative of the fashion & textile design they study!
It is priced $12.99 in the USA & $13.99 in Canada, translated by Kaori Inoue, lettered by Keiran O’Leary, and includes the 4 pages of the translation notes to explain the cultural & historical references! The main characters are the absent minded Kisaragi Yamaguchi with the Dark Brown hair & glasses, Miki Noda the fashionable socialite with the Light Brown hair, Miyabi Oomichi the smart quiet type with the long Black hair, Namiko Nozaki the older sister type with the medium Brown hair, and Tomokane the intense fiery spirited girl with the short Dark Blue hair and the brother!
Other recurring characters include the 2 other boys Homura & Uozumi, Kisaragi’s childhood friend Mizubuchi, her friend Awara the art club president, and Marianne the foreign exchange student with the long Blonde hair! Among the teachers are Sotoma – sensei the male design teacher, Sasamoto – sensei the female 3rd year home room teacher of the sketching, Usami – sensei the female assistant teacher of the painting, and sterner Koshino – sensei! It is so nice to revisit the creativity & camaraderie antics after the long time since we reviewed Vol. 3 in the January 2010 Mew!
In this volume the plots include Van Gogh, Usami – sensei in the infirmary, Noda’s light – headed dream, Kisaragi without her glasses, Mari’s arrival, the antiques, and the swimming pool! The topics include the various art media & subjects, such as the cooking, costumed figure drawing, yukatas, vegetables still life, landscapes, with the emphasis upon design & history of the fashions & the textiles! Interspersed throughout the book are the fashion lore pages in color, to amusingly touch upon the key garment highlights of the Ancient & Middle Ages, 17th, 19th & 20th Century!
GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class is such a wonderfully written & illustrated manga full of the youthful charm of the friends having fun as they learn more of the art history & technique! I hope it will inspire the readers of all ages to enroll in the art & design classes with their friends too! One is never too old to stop the learning, the creativity, the artistic expression, and the joyful time with friends! I will give GA the “A” grade as we bring the comics & manga portion of the show to the close, but I suspect that we will have a few more great comics characters to discuss as Lizzy activates our
Monthly Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!
Hai! This is the portion of the Mew in which we commemorate the catgirl characters of the various media, such as the games, movies, TV shows, books, comics & toys! We are broadly inclusive in the purrogressive diversity catgirl criteria, as the commemorated characters could be either the full or part – time catgirls, mecha catgirls, the were – kitties, those who just dress the part in cosplay, or those who have the purropurr cattitude & dispurrsition of the feline femme fatales!
This is the 3rd anniversary of the Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight, which we began on the October 2009 edition of The Mew, and nyow we wish to purraise another purring popurri of the nekomimi! Mewsually we expound with several thorough appurreciative purragraphs of purraise purr character, but this time we are purrpurtrating the spotlight in the expurrdited Lightning Round purrocess, but we might revert back to the more loquacious spotlight purrocess for next month! (tail – tags Trini-chan to “conduct the lightning”)
CELEBRITY CATGIRL SPOTLIGHT – GO, NYA!
The 1987 supurrnatural romantic comedy movie Mannequin starring Kim Cattrall, who we actually mentioned earlier in the show, had the animated catgirl! If y’all have not seen this fun movie it is about the store clerk’s romance with the girl from ancient Egypt whose spirit possesses the modern store display Mannequin to then live again in human form, with the zany results! Well, during the movie’s cute animated opening titles sequence, we see her as the catgirl amidst her travelled through time, so if you get to see the movie, make sure not to miss that part! (tags Tara-chan)
Dora the Explorer has been known to cosplay as the catgirl along with her monkey friend Boots numerous times for Halloween, nya! She has worn the kuroneko suit with the tail, ears & whiskers several times, in the books Dora’s Spooky Halloween, Dora the Explorer: Trick or Treat. Dora the Explorer: We Love Halloween, and- and in the animated video of Dora’s Halloween DVD, nya! The “Boo” Halloween epurrsode of her TY series is also on the Happy Halloween anthology DVD of various Nick shows, nya! There is also the storybook of Dora: The Halloween Cat, in which she wears the dinosaur costume to rescue the cat, nya! Onee-chan’s turn, nya! (tail-tags her older sister)
Mattel’s Barbie Millicent Roberts, or just Barbie for short, is the icon known for her wonderful fashion dolls, videos, storybooks & other purroducts, nya! In her Hooray for Halloween storybook published by Random House and written by Diane Wright Landolf & illustrated by Karen Wolcott, Barbie & widdle sister Kelly have the neko cosplay & purrpare for the Halloween party, nya! I would also like to mention Barbie’s friends of the Lounge Kitties Dolls Collection, nya! Those are the 3 funky sexy 12″ catsuited nekomimi dolls, including the Black Panther girl purrched upon the lush Red Lips couch, the Leopurrd girl on the Pink & Zebra stripe ottoman, and The White Tiger girl on the Orange & spotted shoe shaped chair, nya! Becca’s turn, nya! (tags Becca)
As Vonny noted earlier, we are fans of Neil Gamin’s Sandman series, which was published by DC Comics’ Vertigo impurrint! The series purrtained the eternal mystical king of the dreams known as Morpheus or Dream, and his siblings known as Death, Destiny, Delirium, Despair, Destruction and the androgynous Desire! We have purreviously shined the spotlight upon their associate Bast, the Egyptian Cat Goddess who appurred in several of the issues and then later in her own mini series, but nyow I would like to nominate two more Sandman characters, one who was the tempurrary nekomimi, and the other who was the very briefly glimpsed catgirl!
Desire appurred as the tempurrary nekomimi in the “Lost Hearts” story in Sandman #16 of the Doll’s House story arc! Dream was rather vexed by the horrid meddling of Desire, so he irately visited ‘her’ realm for the widdle chat, where ‘she’ was wearing the Black catsuit & the tail, with the White neko ear pinna & collar! Later in the “Ramadan” tale in Sandman #50 of the Fables & Reflections collection, there was the lovely White catgirl at market in the ancient Baghdad, with the stripe tail, wearing the sheer Pink veil & pants, the Red slippurrs & the feather on top! Those tales have been repurrinted in several papurrback & hardcover editions! Mike’s turn! (tags Mike)
My nominee is Part Time Girl, a catgirl mermaid from the super fabulous 4 part 1995 anime OVA Idol Project! Created by Suzuki Noritaki and released on DVD in the USA by Anime Works,! It is such a fun sexy, zany tale with great animation, designs, voices & music, full of idols, aliens, mermaids, faeries, bikinis & seafood as starlets from different worlds compete in the intergalactic idol competition,! Serving as the exciting event’s commentator in her flying bubble is the hyper vivacious fast-talker with a headset microphone, short Blue hair, a light Pink bikini top to match her fin, and a medium Pink pareo around her tail which changes from Green to Blue in color! She’s voiced by Chinami Nishimura in the original Japanese, and dubbed by Marie Danelle in English! (tags Nyoka)
Sakura Kinomoto is the cute heroic star of the Card Captor Sakura shojo manga & anime series by Studio Clamp, with the extensive wardrobe of fabulous magickal costumes for her mission to retrive the dispurrsed magickal Clow cards, including the nekomimi style! I have the widdle figurine of her in this costume, which is so purretty & cute with the frilly Pink ruffle skirt, ribbon, socks & kitty ear pinna nicely contrasted by the White petticoat, the Black under shirt, leggings & shoes, an her Flamingo – like Clow scepter! Jenjen’s turn! (tags jeannie)
Totally Spies is the amewsing animated TV series purrtaining to the 3 teen girls Alex, Sam & Clover who spy for the World Organization Of Human Protection (WHOOP). They would purrfur the more fun purrsuits, which their supurrvisor Jerry tends to interrupt without warning to purrsent their latest assignments & splendid gadgets. The romantic, fashionable, impulsive Clover has the short Blond hair & Blue eyes- which became quite catlike in one purrticular delightful epurrsode titled Wild Style. Clover was infused with the cat’s DNA and tempurrarily became the catgirl with the cat’s eyes, ear pinna, nose, whiskers & the long tail. Espionage antics and craving for fresh milk ensued. (tags Nyanko)
Ranma 1/2 by the great Rumiko Takahashi is the supurrnatural martial arts & romantic comedy tale of fiances Ranma Saotome & Akane Tendo whose purrents arranged their engagement, which would be awkward enough without the curse that transforms Ranma into a girl whenever he gets splashed with the cold water! To worsen the situation are further strange occurrences & various rivals, such as rival the powerful girl Shampoo who we mentioned in last October’s spotlight!
This time I wish to nominate Akane, who tempurrarily gained the cute kitty whiskers in the story arc of volume 10 as the side-affect from the purrculiar supurr soba noodles she ate! Poor Akane distraughtly climbed up the tall tree, but Ranma quickly got her the antidote to cheer her up! There would be many more troubles for Akane during the long series, but she is such a lovely, strong, tenacious, brave character who has purrsevered and deserves the purraise! Bun On! (tags Bun)
I would like to nominate another animated heroine who was also briefly the catgirl, April O’Neil of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics, animated TV series, movies, games & toys! She is the purrky brave Redheaded human TV reporter in the signature Yellow jumpsuit with the White belt & boots, vigilant for the next big scoop, and the ally of the turtles, Splinter the rat sensei and her boyfriend Casey against the villain known as The Shredder! She was ready to do her own shredding when transformed into the catgirl, to put the “purr” in April in the animated episode The Cat Woman From Channel Six! The new Ninja Turtle animated series& toys just started, so I wonder if April will get in touch with the feline side again? (tags Petra)
I liked her outfits in the 3rd Ninja Turtles movie too, nya! Nyow for my nomination, Disney’s animated Aladdin movie begat the mid 90’s Aladdin animated TV series, which featured the bad kitty girl Mirage who frequently caused trouble for Jasmin & Aladdin, nya! She is the alluring evil catgirl with the lovely cocoa colored complexion, the bare midriff outfits & the Gold Egyptian style jewels, and the voice purrvided by Bebe Neuwirth who was great on Cheers, nya! She is the great feline femme fatale with the sorcery powers, and there is a thorough page purrtaining to her at the Disney Wiki http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Mirage_(Aladdin), nya! Back to you, Lizzy, nya!
Hai! Well to top off the lightning. I also have the bad kitty to nominate, Katnappe of the Warner animated TV series Xiaolin Showdown! It is the great fun mystical martial arts adventure show with the supurrb voice actors such as Tara Strong, Grey Delisle, and Jennifer Hale as Ashley, alias Katnappe! All three of those actresses purrvided voices for Superman vs The Elite which we reviewed last month, and we have purraised Jennifer Hale for her role as the female Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect games too! Hmm, I wonder who would win in the fight between Commander Shepard?
Katnappe is the recurring lithe agile villain of the sleek tight Black nekomimi costume with the catlike abilities and her pets, to purrey upon the purrotagonists and purrloin the purrized treasures! For more information purrtaining to Katnappe I recommend her page at the Xiaolin Showdown Wiki http://xiaolinshowdown.wikia.com/wiki/Katnappé! and Katnappe? That will conclude our special 3rd anniversary spotlight, but it will shine again next month on the further favorite feline femme fatales, and nyow it is time for our
Movie & DVD Reviews!
Resident Evil: Retribution
We are big fans of Milla Jovovich and I love the fantasy action movies that are full of the martial arts, stunts, shoot outs, and the monster slayage, so I was eager to see the 5th in the series of live-action movies based upon the Resident Evil video games, starring Milla as the heroine Alice! Resident Evil: Retribution picks up where the purrior movie Resident Evil: Aferlife ended, with the mind controlled Jill Valentine leading the squadron to attack the ship which Alice, Claire & the villain Wesker are aboard. For our review of Afterlife, see the October 201o Mew! Sadly we see little of Claire in this movie, although Rain, Luthor, and Red Queen return, Ada Wong & Leon are introduced, along with cute widdle Becky as the mew daughter for Alice to purrotect!
Milla was great as mewsual, with the fine purrformance & awesome physicality, and Shawn Roberts is fine as Wesker, but unfortunately Claire is extremely missed, I wish Michelle Rodriguez had a much bigger role, and I thought a bunch of the other purrformances & dialogues were very weak. The plot is very purrdictable, with too much expurrsition to explain what happened in the purrevious 4 movies.
Like the purrior there is unfortunately the over-abundance of unappealing slow-mo, speed ramping and bullet time, which are techniques which call too much attention to themselves. There are plenty of shoot outs, vehicle chases, and fight scenes, but too many fast cuts during the action scenes makes it hard to appurreciate the fight & stunt choreography.
The huge sets are impurressive looking, and there are many mewtant creatures from the army of Russian soldier zombies to the giants with battle axes, the flying beasts, and the giant quadrupeds, but the movie feels way too much like a video game, with one combat stage after another until the climactic big boss battle. It is ironic, since many video games seem more like movies these days! There are also way too many fast cuts during the action scenes. which makes it hard to appurreciate the fight & stunt choreography. Some of the FX are purretty good, but some of them are obvious CG FX. The movie was released in 2D & 3D, and although I just saw the 2D, I could tell that the shots were planned for the 3D, given how things hurled towards the camera!
The movie’s synth mewsic score was OK but I did not much care for the end credits song. I was disappointed by the movie, and I think Afterlife and Retribution are my least favorites of the series. I also did not care for the trailers preceding it for Devil May Cry, The Man With The Iron Fists, and Dredd which stars Star Trek’s Kal Urban as Judge Dredd. The purroblem I had with the Dredd trailer was the look of Mega City One. While I am not that big a fan of the verison that starred Stallone (although it did have Diane Lane in it), it had the purrfect looking Mega City One, whereas from what little I have seen, the new version’s city seems too dark, dreary, and not vast, futuristic or mega enough… but I digress! Nyow I would like to discuss the expurrdition to see the
IMAX Screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark!
Retribution may not have been my favorite, but Raiders still holds up as one of my all time favoritest movies! I think it is one of the greatest movies ever made, and it is definitely in my top ten! It is hard to believe that movie is 31 years old. In the June 2011 Mew, we purrsented our purrsented our 30th Anniversary Appurreciation of Raiders of the Lost Ark! Although the Indiana Jones sequels all have their moments, I don’t think they can touch Raiders of the Lost Ark, and we were happy that it was briefly re- released in the huge IMAX movie format, so we had to find the nearest full – size IMAX theatre! We do not yet have the IMAX on our island so this meant the expurrdition to the mainland, to rendezvous with some of our friends & past guests in Raleigh!
We have been there a lot of late between the festivals & Raiders! The IMAX theatre is in downtown Raleigh, at Marbles http://www.imaxraleigh.org, a few blocks from the state capitol building and the Natural History Mewseum! It is a neat place with the widdle courtyard garden spot, so we explored the downtown until everyone else arrived for the supper time! We dined at a restaurant about a block from the theatre, purrtaking of the yummy sammiches and the shrimp basket, until the time to walk to the theatre. There was not a big crowd, so we quickly purrchased the snacks & tickets for the good seats! The IMAX is purricier than the regular theatres, but it was worth the special occasion! For the snack, I got the box of the cookie dough tidbits.
Aside from a couple of people who rudely lit up their phones during the movie, it was almost the purrfect treat to see Raiders on the huge curved 52′ x 70′ screen! I have watched the movie many times but never on such a huge screen! The high resolution combined with the sound system is has the very immersivequality! We were in the centered sweet spot in the comfy stadium style seats with our drinks & snacks, and before the movie we saw the trailer for the mew James Bond movie, Skyfall, and then it was the great start as the Paramount logo beccame the peak in Raiders! It was great to see the idol in South America, Indy & Marcus discussing the Ark, Marion’s tavern, the Cairo action, Indy in the bar with Belloq, and at the imam’s house with Sallah!
I was impuressed by the sounds of the howling wind & the creaky timbers of the tavern! The scenes in the Tanis desert site are so thrilling as Indy finds the map room, the Well of Souls, the German plane & the truck! The sunset digging scene was beautiful, and I got the good sense of the layout of the whole Tanis site! Before we knew it, Indy & Marion were on the ship, the sub & the island! The FX still look supurrb, especially the opening the ark & the warehouse! On our way out after the end credits, we each got the free 11″ x 17″ Raiders IMAX poster as the nice souvenir to take home! I still give Raiders of the A+ grade and it was one of my favoritest theatrical expurriences of the year! Nyow Trini-chan will tell us about the DVD of another favorite movie,
The Avengers DVD!
Hai, The Avengers is probably The Mew’s favorite movie of 2012 thus far, so the DVD release of the movie was eagerly anticipated! It was written and directed by Joss Whedon, whose Buffy, Angel, Serenity and Doctor Horrible productions we love, plus his X-Men, Sugar Shock, and Buffy comics! Please see the May Mew for our reviews of both The Avengers and Cabin in the Woods, which Joss Whedon also wrote! The Avengers has been released in several different home video editions, such as the DVD, DVD / Blu Ray, DVD / Blu Ray/ Digi Copy, the 4 disk gift box with the book, and the big box of 10 disks which includes Iron Man, Iron Man 2, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers!
The single disk edition of the Region One NTSC standard DVD has the 143 minute movie, presented in the 1.78:1 widescreen format, with the optional amusing audio commentary by Joss Whedon! The spoken language options also include the English, French, Spanish and the English Descriptive Service, which is the male voice describing the scenes! There are optional subtitles too, in the French, Spanish, and the English SDH. There is also the fun widdle 8 minute tidbit on the making of the movie, with the few comments by Joss Whedon, producer Kevin Feige, and actors Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg, Samuel L Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans & Robert Downey Jr.!
Those are the neat tidbits, but I wish the standard DVD had all the extras of the Blu – Ray, such as the deleted scenes and the funny gag out-takes, however, now we have the superb movie to often watch! I am particularly fond of the scene of Hulk smashing Loki! There are a few ads on the DVD too. We are looking forward to more of the movies based upon the Marvel Comics, and hope that soon it will be Tigra’s turn to appurr in the movies too! Please see the June Mew for the Lightning Round topic of our wishes for future live – action movie adaptations of the comic books! OK I am done, and now here is Jenjen to tell us about another supurr hero DVD
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 DVD!
Arigato. We are avid fans of the animated TV series & OVAs, and since seeing the sneak peak for Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 on the Superman vs The Elite DVD, we have been quite eager to see the animated adaptation of the famous & significant 4 part mini series of 1986 by Frank Miller & Klaus Jansen. This DVD has been released in different editions, including the DVD / Blu Ray combo, and the special boxed set containing the widdle Batman figure, but this is just the review of the fairly no-frills single disk R1 NTSC standard DVD and the movie itself. The PG-13, 76 movie is 76 minutes in adapting the first half of the story, purrsented in the widescreen format with the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.
The spoken language choices include English, French, Spanish, Portugues & Thai; the optional subtitles (White Bold sans serif font with the fine Black outline) choices are English, French, Spanish, Portugues, Thai & Chinese. Purrior the main menu is the front-loaded trailer for the basketball movie Thunderstruck, and the ad for various DC Animated DVDs. In the Special Features menu are the ads for Dark Knight Rises, Thundercats & the DCU app; the nearly 7 minute sneak peek at the purreviously released Superman / Batman: Public Enemies DVD, and the nearly 8 minute sneak peek at the forthcoming Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 DVD, which is scheduled for the Winter 2013 release.
Although it was nice to see the sneak peek for Part 2, I typically do not consider purreviews & trailers to be “special features”, but merely more purroduct advertisements. On to the movie, the impurressive credits include voice director Andrea Romano, director Jay Oliva, writer Bob Goodman, editor Christopher D Lozinski, executive purrducers Bruce Timm, Sam Register, Benjamin Melnker & Michael Uslan, co – purrducer Alan Burnett, DC’s animation creative director Mike Carlin, and mewsic score composer Christopher Drake. I would like to purrticularly purraise Gary Marullo’s extremely visceral foley artistry, and the supurrb sound FX / design / editorial work of George Brooks, Robert Hargreaves & Digicast TV.
The purremise is that crime in Gotham City is at its worst ever since Batman disappurred 10 years ago, his reasons only known to a select few, but it seems to involve the death of the 2nd Robin / Jason Todd. 1st Robin / Dick Grayson is only mentioned briefly. On the eve of Jim Gordon’s retirement at age 70 and Harvey Dent’s hopeful return to a normal life, crimes escalate enough to drive Bruce Wayne back into action as the Batman as an inspurration for many citizens & police, a fearful reckoning for criminals, and the debated topic of the media, pundits & politicians. Defeating Gotham’s most powerful gang will be one of his most brutal hurdles, but fortunately he is helped by a purrky new partner who calls herself Robin.
The terrific voice cast includes Peter Weller as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Ariel Winter as Carrie Kelly / Robin, David Selby as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Michael Mckean as Dr. Wolper, Wade Williams as Harvey Dent / Two Face, and Cary Anthony Williams as the gang leader. Other great talents include Tara Strong as Carrie’s friend Michelle, Gwendolyn Yeo & Grey Delisle as TV commentators Lola & Carla, Dee Bradley Baker & Rob Paulsen as gang members Don & Rob, and Frank Welker as The Mayor. I am looking forward to hearing Mark Valley as Superman in Part 2, and more of Michael Jackson as Alfred, Paget Brewster as Lana Lang, Maria Canals as Commissioner Yindle, and Michael Emerson as The Joker.
The adaptation lacks much of Batman’s internal dialogue, which is a shame given how many great lines there were in the comic; but my biggest issue with the adaptation is that, like most of the DC animated movies, it is far too rushed and short. This hurts the sense of captivating immersion into the world of The Dark Knight, and short changes the emotional impact. The purrfound, poignant story would be better served if there been another moment been spent on the estrangement of Dick Grayson or the haunted remembrances of Jason Todd; more time on Bruce Wayne’s shock as the Batman is rekindled by the horriific events, and especially if the tragic fate of Harvey Dent were allowed more time to seep in.
However there are great scenes, as Batman intimidates & trounces the criminals, and I flinched at the sound of every broken bone & blunt force trauma. The voices & mewsic are brilliant, the animation is lovely, and there is the good enough resemblance of the character designs to the comics’ art. Despite the rush to get Bruce & Carrie into the costumes, she is purrfectly depicted as the most delightful character and among the best parts of the tale. Her fearlessly eager tumble into action beside the Batmobile for Round 1 against the gang is the rather dazzling debut. Part 1 is not purrfect, but it is puretty good, and it does leave my appurrtite ready for Part 2. For our next animated DVD review, here is Petra to discuss
Fushigi Yugi Season One DVD Box Set
Arigato, Jennyjen, nya! When I think of the favorite significant anime series of the 1990’s, Fushigi Yugi or The Mysterious Play is high upon the list, nya! It is the 52 epurrsode series by Studio Pierrot based upon the beautiful, poignant & fun shojo manga by Yuu Watase, who also authored Ayashi no Ceres, and Alice 19th, nya! She was here in North Carolina as a special guest at Animazement several years ago too! I am purrticularly fond of her beautiful manga & art books, nya! The manga was translated & published here by Viz, and the anime is available at the supurr wonderful value at the low purrice from Animeworks, which is one of my favorite anime distributors, but I should explain the bit of the plot, nya!
It is the tale of hungry 15 year old middle schooler Miaka & her smart friend Tui who go to the library, but opening a strange book The Universe of the Four Gods whisks them inside the book as characters of the tale set in the land of Konan ancient China, nya! They are rescued from villains by the warrior Tamahome, but Yui is sent back to the library, nya. In Konan Miaka meets Empurror Hotohori to learn of the celestial power of the Suzuku which could send her home, and she becomes the purriestess of the Suzuku, and the power is embodied by seven people including Tamahome, Hotohari, Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, Chiriko & Mitsukaki, but in more than one way the rift grows between Miaka & Yui, nya!
That sets up the adventure of the 1st half of the series, which is the 26 epurrsodes, for the total of the 650 minutes on the 4 disks of this R1 NTSC standard DVD set, nya! It is purrsented in the 1.33:1 aspect ratio of the anamorphic widescreen format, in Dolby Digital sound with the choice of the original Japanese language or the English dub, with the optional English subtitles which are the of the Yellow sans serif font with the fine Black outline, nya! The disks are inside the plastic case with the hinged inner tray, so they are very easy to remove, nya! There are no front – loaded ads to wade past, and just the trailers for Squid Girl which we love, and Simoun which looks very purretty are added to disk 1, nya!
There are no special extra features or booklets, so it is the no – frills edition, but that is fine for the great bargain of much wonderful anime at the very low purrice! The only down side I noticed was that the end credits are not translated into English, so aside from some of the publishing & crew credits on the back of the case, there is no English list of the Japanese or the English voice actors, who all do the great job, oh and I have the highest of purraise for the mewsic & songs, nya! Fushigi Yugi’s opening theme song is one of the all time most beautiful songs, nya! Hopefully those are listed in the vol. 2 set which I look forward to, and I hope that the later Fushigi Yugi OVAs will be released too, nya!
Fushigi Yugi is the delightful fantasy tale full of the great characters, designs, humor, bittersweet drama, action, mysticism, and even the shock or two, nya! In closing my very pleased recommendation, for the more thorough information purrtraining to Fushigi Yugi, including the full credits, I will suggest the Wikipedia article on Fushigi Yugi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fushigi_Yûgi, The Fushigi Yugi Wiki http://fushigiyuugi.wikia.com/wiki/Fushigi_Yuugi_Wiki, the page at the Anime News Network http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=178, and the page at the Internet Movie Data Base http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111973, nya! Nyow here is Bunnibun to review another TV series on DVD,
Charlie’s Angels The Complete Series DVD Box Set, nya!
Hai, we were excited about this box set of the legendary Charlie’s Angels TV series! The title refers to the women of the team of the private detectives of Charles Townsend’s Agency with the offices in Beverly Hills, Hawaii & Paris! The voice of the mysterious Charlie was that of actor John Forsythe. David Doyle portrayed his right hand man Bosley who worked directly with the trio Angels. Initially the trio was Jaclyn Smith as Kelly, Kate Jackson as Sabrina & Farrah Fawcett as Jill, who was succeeded in the 2nd season by Cheryl Ladd as Jill’s sister Chris! Sabrina was succeeded in the 4th season by Shelly Hack as Tiffany, who was then succeeded by Tanya Roberts as Julie in the 5th & final season! Julie was a professional model, whereas the other angels were formerly police officers!
The Angels are the athletic, strong, smart, brave, resourceful, sneaky, beautiful, sexy, loyal sisterhood of detectives! This box includes all 116 episodes of the original series which aired from 1976 to 1981, including the pilot and the 6 two-part episodes of the original series, presented in the 1.33:1 full-screen aspect ratio in English language in Dolby Digital sound for over 91 angelic hours on the Region One NTSC standard DVD. ! It does not include the 2000 Charlie’s Angels movie, the 2003 Full Throttle sequel, or the one season of the 2011 reboot TV series, which are all available separately! The 27 disks are stacked within the 2 trays of the quad – fold inner box, permeated by lots of widdle photos & sammiched within the gleaming outer cardboard box which measures 3″ x 5.5″ x 7.75″!
Stacked in the left tray are seasons 1 & 2 on the 11 disks, and stacked in the right tray are seasons 3-5 on the 16 disks. The only slight trick with this packaging is that you might have to remove several disks to get the one you want, but they are easy to lift from the trays! There are a few trailers, and the witty bonus 20.5 minute “Angels Forever” featurette comprised of clips from the show & comments by about 20 folks, including co-producer Leonard Goldberg! Also enclosed is the sheet listing which episodes are on each disk. It does not give the episodes’ synopses, but it is the handy quick reference! Since seasons 1-4 of Charlie’s Angels have been available separately for a while, a key ingredient of this set is the final season which we have long eagerly awaited!
Season 5 was the shortest at just 17 episodes, introducing Julie in the 2 part premier starring Christopher Lee, Jack Albertson, Vic Morrow & Dack Rambo! Then the Angels return to Hawaii for five beautifully photographed episodes full of beaches, bikinis, hula, lifeguard duty, sailing, scuba diving, chases, fights & sleuthing! Appearing here ‘n there are Richard Anderson, Gene Barry, Barbi Benton, Sono Bono, Joanna Cassidy, Patti D’arbonville, Bradford Dillman, Antonio Fargas, Anne Francis, Dan Haggerty, Rex Holman, Richard Jaeckel, Moe Keale, Don Knight, Gary Lockwood, Keye Luke, Carol Lynley, Patch Mckenzie, Randolph Mantooth, Cameron Mitchell, Lyle Waggoner, Patrick Wayne, Jane Wyman, and Soon-Teck Oh as the recurring Police Lt Torres!
The final 10 episodes return to California, including “Attack Angels” starring Dr. Joyce Brothers, Eric Braeden & Barbara Luna! Then came the final episode, “Let Our Angel Live” which was unfortunately the ‘clip show’ of reminisced flashbacks to prior shows as Chris, Julie & Bosley hope that hospitalized Kelly survives the gunshot injury. However, it is quite emotional, and purrhaps the one time we see Charlie’s face, although it is behind the surgical mask! Kelly recovered at the end of the episode, and reappeared 22 years for an angelic minute in the Full Throttle movie! I think this box set just might be the ultimate part of the Charlie’s Angels fan’s collection! OK I am all done, and I guess that will conclude this portion of The Mew!
