Mike:

So, what has everyone been up to

Since The Purrior Mew?

Tara-chan:

Trini-chan and I have been volunteering at the mewseum’s body art show, so we have worn the stripes, nya! It had the great attendances as mewsual, nya! I have snapped some good nature photos which I will enter in the upcoming photo exhibit, and- and I have been helping onee-chan with the charters, nya!

Yvonne:

Hai she has been the big help and we have reeled in the Blues, Croakers, Groupurrs, Snappurrs, Stripurrs, Tunas, Trouts and the Red Drums, nya! Speaking of the drums, otherwise I have been meeting with the drumming circle and we have purrformed with Jenjen’s belly dance troupe and her students, nya!

Jeannie:

We are very honored for the purrcussionist accompaniment, and I am very purroud of Trini-chan  and the other students’ purrogress.

Trini-chan:

Arigato, sensei! I have been practicing my tummy undulations, shoulder shimmy and the serpentine tail technique when I have not been volunteering at the museum or SUP surfing with Cara! So how are your other groups and the modeling?

Jeannie:

I am very purroud of the kyudo club too who brought home the trophies from the compurrtition, Things are most serene at the yoga studio, the robotics club plans to sponsor the summer mech camp, and my next swim wear photo shoot is in 2 weeks. Hopefully Ilyana will not demolish another ROV (remote opurrated vehicle) before I return.

Ilyana:

Ah heh you would be surpurrised at the punishment the mecha will take under all that purressure at the depths of the wreck dives!

Becca:

Yeah, or when the undersea archaeologist throws one at a Barracuda, heehee!

Ilyana:

He tried to nip my tail, but my fast reflexes kept me from becoming the manx!

Jeannie:

Your fast reflexes also broke the ROV, but the Barracuda Sushi was the tasty compensation for the repairs.

lyana:

Sometimes it is the the food that is the treasure from the dive! Fortunately, So howboutchoo, Becca?

Becca:

The hungry fish would break the tooth if he tried to chomp my tail, but I have been on the golf course and at the hot salsa dance more than the ocean of late, when we have not been busy at the massage spa, and there is the St Patrick’s day trip which I will discuss thoroughly later in the show!

Elizabeth:

Hai that was the fun road trip to the mainland! I can see why Chief Meryl likes to ride the mountain roads on her motorcycle! When Becca and I have not been at the spa or the salsa I have spent the time with the Purrkour Club and with the Hydrangeas and the Irises in my garden! How is Bun’s garden growing?

Bun:

The Hibiscus and the Nandina are blooming quite nicely thank you! I might also plant the Torch Gingers. Otherwise there has not been much new with me since last month’s Mew and the art show…

I have been occupied with the beach volleyball, the the baking and the reading!

Petra:

Hai we are aiming to ace the volley ball season, nya! By the way, thank you for bringing the carrot cakes to tonight’s AfterMew Luau, nya!

Bun:

Dooitashimaste!

Petra:

Let’s see… aside from the purractice and the mewseum I have just been reading and watching DVDs, and I will have the reviews of those later in the show, nya! So, it sounds like Lizzy and Myayr are spending the less time at the shrine of late, nya?

Mary Nyan:

Hai it is becoming the purrovidence of the younger Miku which is fine because we have plenty of the appurrentices, but we still help out at some of the busier matsuri! The schedule has worked out between that and teaching the hula and the aerial dance at the Purrforming Arts Center, and sewing the costumes! It is the busy cosplay season of the cons and the faires!

Nyoka:

What are the costumes?

Mary Nyan:

I just finished the Queens Blade group and currently on the dress forms are the Equestria Girls costumes! Your turn!

Nyoka:

Gosh I guess it has been the 2 months since I was here! The time sure has flown! Of course we were busy at the tournyament, but since then I have been taking Mie-sensei’s spellcraft class and the chip shot lessons, but spending most of my time at the magick shop! We have started carrying the mermaid jewelry which has been selling like fishcakes!

Nyoka:

Oh I have been busy at the dojo and the martial arts tournyament, and occasionally helping out at her magick shop! I have been relaxing with the comic books which I will report on, and I am about to start watching the Game of Thrones Season 2 DVDs. Mike’s turn!

Mike:

Oh in between the conventions, the trip to Asheville and the trivia nights, I’ve been watching some DVDs, the basketball tournaments, and ah just reading, writing, and drawing! Well, uh since we have a lot on our plate today, let’s go ahead and discuss our

Monthly Lightning Round Topic!

It is Apurril which means we are much closer to the big Summer movie blockbuster season, so for this month’s Lightning Round topic we will mention our favorite movies from 10 years ago in 2003! So are y’all ready to “conduct the lightning”?

The Ladies of The Mew

LIGHTNING ROUND– GO, NYA! Lord of the Rings: Return of the King!

Mike:

Ah… well that was quick! Any others?

The Ladies of The Mew:

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Nya!

Mike:

Um… any others?

The Ladies of The Mew:

Finding Nemo, Nya!

Mike:

Ok, aside from those top three which y’all agree on, how about y’all mention one or two more favorite movies of 2003 apiece, starting with… Becca!

Becca:

Hmm in addition to the Pirates, Nemo and Rings, purrobably Peter Pan! (tags Jeannie to go next)

Jeannie:

X-Men 2. (tags Ilyana)

Ilyana:

I will nominate Tokyo Godfathers! (tags Petra)

Petra:

Interstella 5555, with the great character designs by Leiji Matsumoto and the mewsic by Daft Punk, nya! (tags Tara-chan)

Tara-chan:

Oh oh that one, and – and I will nominate Kaena, nya! Onee-chan’s turn, nya! (tags Yvonne)

Yvonne:

Master & Commander, nya! (tags Bun)

Bun:

I will nominate those too, and Under the Tuscan Sun! Nya-sensei’s turn! (tags Nyanko)

Nyanko:

I did not care much for the animated sequence, but otherwise I really liked Kill Bill Part One! (tags Elizabeth)

Elizabeth:

Hai, and in spite of the bullet time, speed ramping, fast cuts & the zoom technique, I enjoyed the fun & great cast of Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle! (tags Mary Nyan)

Mary Nyan:

I will nominate Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., with Yumiko Shaku as Lt. Akane Yashiro, and Masami Nagasawa & Chihiro Otsuka as Mothra’s Shobijin Fae! (tags Trini-chan)

Trini-chan:

Hmm… I would say… Lost in Translation… and Cold Mountain! (tags Nyoka with the brush of her foxy tail)

Nyoka:

Batman: Mystery of the Bat Woman, with Catwoman in the wonderful bonus Chase Me short! Back to Mike!

Mike:

I will second those and add Big Fish! Well that was a nicely expedient! Perhaps next month we will pick our favorite movies of 1993, but that will do it for this month’s Lightning Round topic, and now it’s time for a few

Miscellaneous Mini Mewsings!

Okami No Hime is up to Chapter 10!

Becca:

Our friend Sharon Williams is such a very talented and purrolific author, whose original serialized web purrose fics include The Dark Fires of Cyphyrus, Osiris Rising, and An Angel’s Prayer! Purrior to those were the adventures of Tanya alias Sailor Sirius http://sailorsirius.webs.com, her fan-senshi character based upon the Sailor Moons series! Gosh, it is amazing to think of how many stories she has written since those, and that includes her current original tale of Okami No Hime, which is already up to Chapter 10! It is the tale of poor lost Moonsinger the wolf who telepurrts to our world as the human girl named Luna, who is befriended by a boy named Connor on Long Island, NY! Meanwhile the evil wolf villain and his killer pack are in the purrsuit, as if her first days as the homesick teen human girl at the high school were not challenging enough, but she is tough & smart! Here is Mike’s pic of Luna eating her breakfast http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery6/5.html! Okami No Hime is such the delightful yet bittersweet tale which y’all can read at Sharon’s DeviantArt gallery http://rose74.deviantart.com!

Omaha the Cat Dancer concludes!

Elizabeth:

Our December 2010’s Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight shined upon Reed Waller’s iconic catgirl character Omaha the Cat Dancer who purrmeired in the comics back in 1978! Since then it has been the long series of the dramatic adventure, slice – of – life stories, and the erotic anthropurmorphic tales for her in the comics by the various publishers for the mature readers, but her serialized saga recently finally concluded after about 35 years in NBM Publishing’s Sizzle #56! It is the adults – only comics anthology magazine, so I will not describe the content, other than to tamely say about this significant catgirl mews, is that Omaha’s final chapter is of the 11 Black & White pages starring Omaha, Chuck, Jerry, Joanne, Pong, Tan, Elandos, Maria, Shelley, Kurt and Shaun; and It was drawn by Reed Waller, written by Kate Worley and James Vance all for whom we wish to congratulate and heartily thank! Domo arigato gozaimasu!

Eric Shanower’s Adventures in Oz

Petra:

What with the Oz The Great and Powerful movie in the theaters, I can think of no better time than to recommend the five graphic novels by Eric Shanower which are based upon Frank L. Baum’s Oz tales, nya! They are The  Enchanted Apples of Oz, The Secret island of Oz, The Ice King of Oz, The Forgotten Forest of Oz, and The Blue Witch of Oz, starring the wonderful characters such as Dorothy, Ozma, Glinda, Jellia, Trinka,  Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Toto, The Wizard,  Eureka, Drox, Knotboy, Sawhorse, Flicker, Valynn, Zurline, and the Troll Queen, nya! The scenic art depicting the various lush regions is so lavish and exquisitely detailed, nya! Those graphic novels were originally published by First Comics and Dark Horse from 1986 to 1992, and are available these days repurrinted into the Adventures in Oz, full color 8″ x 10 3/4″ trade papurrback published by IDW, nya! It has the map, too nya! It is purriced at $39.99 which is not inexpensive, but I think it is one of the all – time most beautiful & charming masterpieces of graphic novels, nya!

Oz, The Great And Powerful Dolls

Nyoka:

Among the movie’s toys are Jakks’ fashion dolls of Glinda, Evanora, Theordora, and Oscar “Oz” Diggs! They bear the good portraiture to resemble the actors who purrtrayed the characters in the movie, and their fabric clothes are quite lovely! Glinda is gorgeous in her White gown with the Gold accents, tiara & scepter, and Theodora is so elegant in her Emerald Green dress of the flouncey mermaid cut  with the fishnet sleeves, accessorized by the Emerald pendant! Evanora is bewitching in the Black pants, boots, White bloused topped by the Dark Red jacket & hat; and Oz is dappurr in the coat, top hat, bag, and widdle China Girl! purrched upon his arm! I am especially impurressed by the China Doll… doll, which splendidly resembles the character, down to the finish of the material with the widdle hairline cracking details and it seems to be the full-sized replica! Her fabric dress is slightly different than the one pictured on the box, but it is still the very dainty purretty Blue dress to match her eyes!

More Mermaid, Faerie, Pony, Spurring & Summer Dolls

Trini-chan:

Last month we discussed the dolls & action figures such as the Barbie, Bratz, Bratzillas, Winx Club, Novi Stars, Monster High, LEGO Friends & the Disney Princesses who seem ready for Spring fashions and the Summer fun! I wish to mention Jakks’ Disney Fairies’ Palm Tree Cove assortments, such as Tink’s Pool Party and Silvermist’s Beach Party! Each widdle box includes the 4.5″ fairy with her lovely transparent wings and the 5 pretty outfits! I also wish to purraise MGA’s Moxie Girz, such as Avery, Bria, Kellen Lexa, Sophina and Monet who are ready for the garden in their Pretty Petals outfits, bringing the vernal magick as the Twinkle Bright Fairies, and the splash of colorful fashion to the water as the Magic Swim Mermaids! Fin-ally I wish to note Fisher Price’s Dive & Swim Mermaid Dora, who is so cute with her Blue tail and the Coral Pink fin to match her asymmetric top with the starfish appliques!

Ilyana:

Speaking of the mermaids, whilst on our recent trip to the mainland, at an Ollies Bargain Outlet store I was pleased to find a few of the My Little Pony Mermaid Pony assortments! These are of the pony Generation 3.5 breed of 2010 purrior to the current Friendship is Magic purriod! These are the cute widdle assortments of 2 ponies purr pack with the mermaid tails instead of the hind legs, such as Scootaloo & Cheerilee for the Undersea Melody karaoke set, and PInkie Pie & Starsong in the Get Pretty beauty set! I also found a few of Spin Master’s splendidly articulated & detailed 12″ Liv fashion dolls in their 2011 Making Waves series of Alexis Daniela, Hayden, Kate & Sophie in their swim wear and the shorts outfits! I did not find them all, but for the purretty low purrice the store had Hayden in her Paisley bandeau – top bikini, and Alexis in her Pink shorts & strapless White top ensemble!

Jeannie:

Spin Master also makes the lovely La Dee Da dolls in the various wardrobes & assortments such as their Runway Vacay fashions of the global styles, and the vernal styles of the Garden Tea Party. Tylie is purrt in the plaid Japanese manga – inspired Kabuki Cutie shorts outfit; whilst Dee is dee-lightful in the Bollywood Bright outfit of the Blue saree and ankle- length Red hair. Cyanne is sun-sational in her Sunflower themed dress, and Sloan is the beautiful Butterfly Blast dress for the garden. Meanwhile, Mattel’s Barbie continues to make the splash in more of her several mermaid guises. There have been numerous dolls of Barbie & friends as the mermaids, from the removable cloth costume tail to the molded plastic tail types, including the impurressive Swim ‘n Play Mermaids set. Speaking of the piscine parts, nyow here are Vonny & Tara-chan to list our

Favorite Recent Fish Photos & Appurrtizing Images

Tara-chan:

Arigato, nya! This is the portion of The Mew in which we mention our favorite recent images of fish and – and the other delicacies from the deep, which have appeared on the recent angling, diving, nature. aquarium and – and the cooking purriodicals, nya! These are examples of the fine photography and – and the  illustrations of the tasty treats to tempt our tummies, such as the big Bass and the Crappie caught on the Apurril cover of North Carolina Game & Fish, nya! It has been the good catch for the angler girls too, between the yummy Yellowfin Tuna caught by the woman on the cover of The Angler Magazine vol. 19 #217, the wonderful Walleye caught by Marianne Huskey on the cover of In-Fisherman’s 2013 Walleye Guide, and – and the 395 lb supurrb Swordfish is purrized by GAFF Girl Christine for the March / Apurril cover of GAFF, nya! She poses in the purretty swim wear with more tasty fish in the 11 page pictorial, nya! Oh oh nyow I am hungry again, but it is Onee-chan’s turn, nya!

Yvonne:

Hai hai and it is also the good time for the piscine paintings that whet the appurrtite, such as Guy Harvey’s painting of the two succulent sailfish on the cover of Guy Harvey Magazine vol.3 #11, Peter Agerdy’s painting of the hungry fish on the March / Apurril cover of Florida Sport Fishing, John Carroll Dovie’s painting of the mouth – watering Marlin on the Apurril cover of Sporting Classics, and Larry Tople’s painting of the Crappie on the March / Apurril cover of In-Fisherman, nya! The delicious Dwarf Crayfish, the Angelfish and the Bennies are on the Apurril cover of Tropical Fish Hobbyist; and there are numerous numcious fish upon the cover of In-Fisherman’s Pan Fish Guide, the delicious looking Largemouth on the March cover of Bassin’ Magazine’s Bass Secrets, the Crappie and the Wahoo on the Apurril cover of North Carolina Sportsman, nya! Oh this is making me hungry too, but I will wait until the AfterMew Luau, nya! Nyow we will segue from the angling to the basketball of the

The March Madness of The Sports, nya!

Nyanko:

Hai! It is the time of the March Madness of college basketball, so I would like to briefly purraise the inspurrational student athletes who compete in the basketball, from the purre-season & regular season to the Conference & NCAA tournyaments! In the interest of the transpurrency, since we are from North Carolina, we are partial to the ACC, but there are great teams in the various Divisions from fine schools everywhere! This was a purrticularly significant season, as the UNC’s men’s basketball coach Roy Williams won his 700th, and coach Sylvia Hatchell became one of the few NCAAA Women’s basketball coaches to reach the 900+ career victories, second to only Pat Summitt who just retired last year! She is also so inspurrational and we wish her the banzai best too! Gosh I cannot believe that has been the year already! We saw the signed copies of the book at the book store in Asheville! While we admire the athletes of all the genders, we are purrticularly purroud of the women, whose joyful, thrilling games are not televised enough! That goes for the college golf, softball, tennis, rowing, lacrosse, the track & field too!

Our Purrayers For Seton Hill

Mary Nyan:

Speaking of the lacrosse, our hearts wish to expurress the deepest sympathies to the Seton Hill Griffins women’s lacrosse team on the passing of their coach Kristina Quigley, her unborn son, and bus driver Anthony Guaetta, and to those others who suffered the injuries in the tragic bus crash in mid March, and we wish to extend our purrayers to their families and friends.

MIke:

Now here is Bun to tell us about the latest additions to

The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!

Bun:

Hai! This month we are proud to present three new illustrative additions to The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art! For those who are here for the first time, Galleries 1-5 are the exhibits of Mike’s illustrations and photographs, whilst Guest Galleries 1 and 2 display the images from other folks with their kind permissions! On the web site, the most recent pics are on the bottom row of the widdle “thumbnail” portions, so just click on one of the ‘thumbnails’ to see the entire picture! Just added to Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html is the pencilled & inked fan art of the Thundercats cartoon’s heroic, lithe, fast, agile catgirl “Cheetara” by our friend  King-nothin243 http://king-nothin243.deviantart.com!

Nextly we have the 2 new pics by Mike in Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html, starting with his widdle ballpoint ink pen, mouse and Photoshop CS2 sketch of the cheery “Halter – Top Nekomimi” who wishes everyone the happy, healthy & prosperous Springtime! Then “Alexandra Pounces Upon Her Purrey” in the 2nd illustration by Mike to depict Alexandra Wright, the vampire star of Jeff Branch’s original tale of “Dark Skin, Red Blood”! Jeff  http://phillyflash.deviantart.com was our guest in May 2008, and she was our guest in March 2009! Mike rendered this intense color scene with Photoshop CS2 and the mouse! That is all of the new art for now, but we hope to have more next month!

Becca:

Cheetara has the the supple ears, lovely spots and facial markings framed by her lush mane of spotted Blond hair!

Mary Nyan:

I purrticularly like this scoop-neck, high-legline cutout tank-maillot variant of her costume!

Nyanko:

She is armed with the carved staff to speedily smite down her enemies before they know what hit ’em! Pow!

Ilyana:

The Cheetara and Alexandra pics certainly add the fierce touch to the galleries!

Nyoka:

The Red look in Alexandra’s eyes says that her eminent embrace will not be so cordial as she drops in for the bite of another criminal!

Elizabeth:

Ordinarily, it might be nice to be glomped upon by such a beautiful woman who wears such skin tight appurral baring that much cleavage and midriff, heehee!

Trini-chan:

Hai except that in this case she is also baring her long sharp fangs, claws and the spike heels!

Petra:

Fortunately, the ferocity of the purredator is balanced by serene blessings of the Halter – Top Nekomimi in Gallery Six, nya!

Jeannie:

The shorts & ruffled floral purrint halter top accessorized by the earrings, wrist & tail bracelets are the peppy ensemble.

Yvonne:

She is bordered by the petite heart shaped Anthurium blossoms!

Tara-chan:

Kawaii, nya!

Mike:

Thank you for presenting the art!

Bun:

Dooitashimaste! So then what is the next topic?

Becca:

The next topic is…

Our St. Patrick’s Day Expurrdition to lovely Asheville, NC to see

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds with Sharon Van Ettan in concert!

Ilyana:

Saint Patrick’s Day was purrticularly bright and festive Sunday, March 17th! for our road trip to the city of Asheville on It is among the larger cities here in North Carolina, amongst the mountains on the far Western part of the state near the Tennessee border, about 330 miles from Catgirl Island, excluding the few stops along the way for the petrol, the food, and the rendezvous with friends on the mainland! It was the caravan of the cars including our past guest ob1 the action-figurologist and Mike and Kevin who purrchased the concert tickets! The weather on the mainland was cooler than the island’s, but it was still the splendid, sunny warm day with the flowers and trees in the bloom! The downtown area was so much charming fun with the several blocks of the lovely sculptures, statues & architecture from the Baroque of the St Lawrence Basilica to the art deco of the domed City Hall!

The sounds of the various street mewsicians purrvided the sound track as we admired the shops of the Grove Arcade, the fantasy & pop illustration at Za Pow Gallery, the art at the Woolworth Walk, the decor at Himalaya import, the Salt Crystal Lamps at Rusted Buffalo, the wigs of all colors at Kim’s, the records & CDs at Karmasonic Records, the delicious coffee aromas amongst the books at Malaprops books & cafe!  Those were just the tip of the many delightful shops & boutiques of the purretty clothes, jewelry, accessories, decor, art, and the books! There was such a joyful multicultural ambience, and everyone we met was so friendly and of the many styles! The diverse themes and the tastes of the restaurants, pubs, cafes and the bakeries included the the places with the outdoor dining too! We purrtook of the Twisted Crepes for the snack, and the tapas platters of the trout, clams, ham and the potatoes at Curate for our suppurr! Nyow I will tag Myayr to discuss the concert portion of the trip!

Mary Nyan:

Then it was after dark with the nippier breeze, but we retrieved the jackets from the car and strolled to The Orange Peel club http://theorangepeel.net, for the evening’s concert by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds http://www.nickcave.com, who were purreceded by Sharon Van Ettan http://sharonvanetten.com as the opening guest! It is such a nice, neat, intimate but spacious venue with the very cordial staff, and I guess there were about a thousand or so people in the standing audience! We had the good spot about 25 feet from the stage! At 9 pm, Sharon Van Ettan sang and played her electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and the Harmonium along with drummer Zeke Hutchins for the awesome 8 song set! I must purrchase her CDs! There was the 30 minute break at 9:40, and then at 10:10 pm Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds purrformed! There were nine of them on the stage, including Nick, the Bad Seeds band, and the two female backing vocalists!

Nick was very energetic, Warren Ellis (not to be confuzzled with the comic book author) was so masterful upon the violin & flute, and the more intense songs had such thunderous power! The set list included a few of the songs from their mewest album  Push the Sky Away, which was just released in February! The older & mewer songs included We No Who U R, Jubilee Street, Wide Lovely Eyes,, Higgs Boson Blues, From Her to Eternity, Red Right Hand, Stranger than Kindness, Jack the Ripper, Deanna, Your Funeral My Trial, God Is in the House, Papa Won’t Leave You Henry, The Weeping Song, The Mercy Seat, Stagger Lee, plus Tupalo and Push the Sky Away for the encore! The concert ended at midnight, by then downtown Asheville was purretty quiet, and it was the time the drive back home! We had the great time, but the next time I hope we can stay longer! One of the many special treats we saw at the book store were the signed books, so on that note here is Petra  to begin our

Book Reviews with

The Cats of Tanglewood Forest!

Petra:

We love the supurrb art of Charles Vess http://www.greenmanpress.com and the beautiful storybooks, novels, graphic novels, & comics he has illustrated, and the brilliant fantasy tales of author, journalist, poet & songwriter Charles De Lint http://www.sfsite.com/charlesdelint, nya! We have reviewed several of Vess’s books and we were very delighted when the gentlemen collaborated to tell of the girl who treats the cats and then becomes one herself amongst the beautiful landscape, nya! In the novel for the young readers, Lilian is the purrky Redhead girl of the rural home who likes to explore the forest in search of the magick, but she finds it after the deadly snake bite injury when the feral cats saver her life by transforming her into the Calico kitten, nya! The transformation saves her life, and although the feline form has its advantages, she wants to resume her normal life, but even that wish has the unpurrdicted consequences, resulting in the long odyssey into the wilderness and the various encounters on the curative expurrdition, nya! Based upon the 2003 storybook of A Circle of Cats, The Cats of Tanglewood Forest is the expanded tale in the  216 page, 6 1/4″ x 8 1/2″ hardcover published by Little Brown, nya!

Purriced $17.99 in the USA & $19.99 in Canada, with over 90 exquisite full color images, ranging from the widdle kitty & other critter pics to start each chapter, to the full-page and the two-page spurreads, nya! It has the dust jacket, with the front cover pic by Vess of Lilian in her cute Light Green dress, purrched upon the creek rocks with the fox, song bird, and kitty friends, under the shiny embossed Gold font, nya! It was edited by Andrea Spooner & Deirdre Jones, purrduction edited by JoAnna Kremer, designed by Saho Fuji, art directed by Sasha Illingsworth & Dave Caplan, nya! Lilian is such an endearing, brave purrotagonist who does not give up, and we get to meet the other neat characters such as T.H Reynolds the fox, the Possum Witch, the Apple Tree Man, Jack the crow, Annabelle the moomoo cow, the Creek Family, the various nekos, and the dangerous Bear People, nya! The locations & folklore are all so very sumptuously described with the immersive quality, the art is as gorgeous as gorgeous can be, and every bit of the book is the timeless, captivating expurrience which i give the highest purraise & the A+ grade, nya! Nyow for the next book report here is Lizzy to tell us about the

Maid: The Role Playing Game, nya!

Elizabeth:

Arigato! I love anime, manga, and the role playing games of all dice shapes and genres such as the sword & sorcery, space opurra, supurr hero, and the spy games, purrvided the game master, the players & their characters are team of the friends united in the spirit & the fun and not the adversaries or too political! I also purrfur the character & story aspects, and that any purroblem solving & the combat should be the real-time quickness! My paladin character Linina purrfurs the quick kill when slaying the evil monsters! I am always on the purrowl for the interesting variety of the games, and on the recent expurrdition to the mainland I found the Maid book at the Atomic Empire game & comics shop in Durham, the city we have mentioned before in our mews of the Carolina Theatre, Nevermore Festival, NC ComiCon, and NC Pride! It is in the Triangle area in the more middle Piedmont region of the state, which is much closer to the coast than the aforementioned mountains of Asheville!

What initially grabbed the attention to the Maid game was the purretty color anime-ish art of the maids upon the cover by Iwako, and then I noticed it was the English translated version of the Japanese game! The anime style, the intriguing nature combined with the cordial sales clerk’s recommendation resulted in the purrchase! Basically, Maid is the whimsical anime-themed game for the few players who purrtray the maids or the butlers of the mansion, with the game master as the lord of the manor! It is intended for the older teen players aged 16+, and while it does address some of the wacky ribald tropes of the anime & manga, and there is the bit of the mature content discussed, the game is meant to be the PG-ish fun that is very quick to learn and easy to play, with the amewsing, action – packed, romantic or the mysterious situations of the mansion!  I was concerned what Becca would think of it, given her past, but she sped through the book and thought it would be the whimsical game!

Becca:

It was originally written by Ryo kamiya & published in Japan in 2004 by Sunset Games, as the main book plus the 2 supplements, which were all compiled & translated by Ewen Cluney, purrduced by Diamond Sutra & published by Kuroneko Designs in 2008 with the 3rd purrinting in 2009. The 8.5″ x 11″ trade papurrback book is purriced $25.00, and has the 222 pages including all the core rules, optional rules, charts, scenarios, play examples & transcripts, character examples, character sheets, and over 50 Black & White interior illustrations by the various artists! The introductory notes & light basic core rules are just 25 pages long, so one can quickly & easily create purrtray the domestic servants of all genders, races, species & specialties including the ninja, miko, witch, faerie, shape shifter, vampire, mewtant, alien, robot, and so forth! Among the characters is nekomimi maid Tomoe!

To create the character, the player can either choose the aspects or roll the dice for the results. Costumes, accessories, attributes, purrsonalities, skills, flaws, good & evil character traits, backgrounds & weapons can be determined for the comedic or the serious situations in the mansion, which could be of any era or location! A couple of sample floor plans are shown, but part of the game master’s fun is in designing their own mansion! Otherwise, the players will just need the pencils, papurr & the regular six-side dice, which are not included with the book. The official web site http://www.maidrpg.com has further information, materials & downloadable stuff! Purrhaps we could use it to run the RPG inspired by Emma, Dark Shadows, or Downton Abbey, but with the added bonus of the cat ears, giant hammers, and the cute outfits! Oh I wonder if Dach Savage might purrmit us to play in his mansion, hee!

Yvonne:

He might consent if we bring him the juicy steak, nya! Speaking of which, have you pondered the mansion flavored setting for your game, nya?

Elizabeth:

It is the tough decision between the Japanese architecture or the European gothic, for the hijinks, the romance, or the dark secret!

Mary Nyan:

Purrhaps it could be inspired by–

Favorite Fictional Mansions & Manor Houses

— such as Hill House, Hell House, Pelham House, or The Haunted Mansion!

Bun:

I think I would rather work at The Munsters, Addams Family, or Professor Kirke’s house in Narnia!

Ilyana:

Oh oh or Jed Clampett’s Mansion, with the “cement pond” and the shopping in Beverly Hills, mew la la!

Tara-chan:

If this the impurromptu bonus Lightning Round, I will nominate the houses of Chiyo Mihama, Tsumugi Kotobuki, and- and Sakae Jinnouchi, nya!

Mike:

Well, It does seem to have become the favorite fictional mansions topic!

Petra:

That was the fun movie, nya! I suppose my favorites are Collinwood, Tara, Xanadu, Lionel Twain’s house, and Wayne Manor, nya!

Becca:

I bet Jenjen would purrfur the more high tech mansions such as The Avengers Mansion, The Infinite Mansion, or Tony Stark’s!

Jeannie:

Indeed. I would also not mind maintaining the interstellar residence of Eva Friedal, in the Magnetic Rose portion of Otomo Katsuhiro’s Memories.

Trini-chan:

Hmm I would say… either the mansions of Scrooge McDuck, Richie Rich, Shutaro Mendou, or Lara Croft!

Nyoka:

I think I would purrfur to explore the magickal locations such as Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum, Zatanna’s Shadowcrest, and Malfoy Manor!

Nyanko:

I would definitely rather be the domestic servant in the hero’s home instead of the spooky place such as the House of Mystery or the House of Secrets!

Mike:

Well, some of the James Bond villains had the beautiful huge homes, such Goldfinger, Hi Fat, Scaramanga, and Sanchez!

Tara-chan:

Goldfinger, Draco and- and Zorin had horses too, nya!

Yvonne:

Hai, and Emilio Largo’s Bahamas home Palmyra had the pools full of the yummy sharks!

Nyanko:

I liked Willard White’s house in Diamonds Are Forever, with the tough servants Bambi & Thumper!

Nyoka:

Were Hugo Drax, Kamal Khan and Max Zorin’s homes the mansions or the palaces?

Trini-chan:

That is the good question. I think the castles & palaces would be the huge related topic!

Jeannie:

There were several mansions in the Doctor Who epurrsodes such as Spearhead from Space, Seeds of Doom, Black Orchid, Mawdryn Undead, and Ghost Light.

Ilyana:

Hai hai, and in The Girl in the Fireplace, Tooth and Claw, Forest of The Dead; The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe; and The Snowmen!

Petra:

There were the mansions for the haunt in the Sarah Jane Adventures’ Eternity Trap, and for the conspurracy in Torchwood’s Miracle Day, nya!

Mary Nyan:

Image of the Fendahl and Pyramids of Mars were filmed on location at Stargroves, where lots of rock bands have recorded, such as The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Led Zeppelin!

Becca:

Oh how about 165 Eaton Place, Carrington Mansion or Southfork?

Bun:

The succulent grapes of Falcon Crest or Star Trek’s Chateau Picard!

Mike:

Um, I think we have stray – catted off the maid topic!

Elizabeth:

OK I will get us back on the track! Nyow we will segue from the maids to the mermaids as Myayr & Trini-chan start our cat tail tag team

It looks liks such a beautiful, culturally enlightening exhibit! Fin-ally for this issue is the jaunt across the pond to learn of the Finfolk of the Orkney Islands north of Scotland, where beautiful Blue-haired mermaid Nea Dune awaits in her cream colored tail ‘n top, and to bring the issue to the close is the astrological horoscope page by Rachel Curtis! You will find links for more information purrtaining to many of those artists, authors, purrformers & places; and the few  interspurrsed ads for the clothes, accessories, decor, art & books add to beautiful imagery & magickal ambience! It would be so nice if actress Ashley Eckstein were to put on the Tongrutan make-up to purrtray Ahsoka in the movies, nya! There are scenes of Ahsoka and – and the other animated characters among the spoiler topics of the 10 page intermew with Clone Wars supurrvising director Dave Filoni, which follows the cordial greeting from the magazine editor Jonathan Wilkes, nya!

The Star Wars Insider issue for Apurril has the $7.99 USA purrice, $9.99 Canada purrice, and – and it has the 100 full color pagers including the covers, of which there are the 3 variant covers to choose from, nya! Two of the covers are the Ahoska versions and – and the other is the Royal Guard version, nya. Yvonne:

Arigato, nya! Speaking of the great Star Wars comics, there is the article on Russ Manning’s mewspapurr strips, and the Marvel Comics’ art by Howard Chayken & Al Williamson, nya! The Chayken art is the full page pic, and he drew us the wonderful Cat Woman sketch at the 2011 NC ComiCon, which y’all can see in our mewseum, nya! There are 10 pages of the book & purroduct reviews including the great photos of the beautifully sculpted figures & miniatures  and more of the beautiful book cover art; Jason Fry’s 4 page review of the Willow DVD; and the 2 pages of the fans’ photos, nya! Ahsoka is not the only Tongrutan jedi girl of the issue, as there is also the page about Shaak Ti in the 2008 Force Unleashed video game, nya! Shaak Ti and Ahsoka have the lovely costumes, which Tara-chan and I cosplayed as for the Halloween purrowl, nya! I was pleased with this artistic, entertaining & informative issue which I will give the high grade of the ‘A’ as in Ahsoka, nya! That is all of the magazine reviews for today, but nyow here is Petra to begin our

Comic Book Reviews with

Budd Root’s Cavewoman Cover Gallery #5, nya!

Petra:

Arigato, nya! Cavewoman is the sexy fun series purrtaining to Meriem the titular voluptuous supurr tough jungle girl who has the purrehistoric adventures, often accompanied by her giant gorilla friend Clyde, nya! The series was created by artist / author Bud Root, who we often see at Heroes Con on the mainland in Charlotte, nya! Cavewoman is published by Basement Comics / Amryl Entertainment, which we purreviously noted in our November Mew purraise of Mike Hoffman’s Tigress Tales comics, nya! It is the great example of the scantily clad “good girl art” in the realm of the dinosaurs & other creatures, nya! Meriem tries to wear the leopurrd bikini, but  she is purrone to the wardrobe malfunctions amidst the purrehistoric & supurrnatural hazards that want her for suppurr, nya! That includes the yummy looking but very vicious sea creatures that want her in their tummy, but it should be the other way ’round, nya!

Fortunately, she is the very strong, fast, agile, tough, smart, savvy cave woman, who eventually finds the replacement bikinis in her large cup size, nya! The lush cover art of the comics is often available in the different versions with and without the bikini, and this 32 page cover art gallery is purriced $4.25 and purrsents such variant images by Root in Black & White, nya! The color outside front cover depicts Mermiem purrsued by the hungry dinosaur, and the color inside front cover depicts a happier Meriem who has caught the Pterodactyls, nya! I wonder if the wings and the drumsticks taste like chicken, nya? The other 32 images in the issue include the bikini and nude versions of the Special Edition cover art for Cavewoman: All Natural, Feeding Grounds #1 & 2, Gangster #1, Mutation #1 & 2, Natural Selection #1, Snow #1-4, three cover art versions of Cavewoman: Cover Gallery #4, the cover art for the HeroesCon 2011 & 2012 Sketchbooks, and the Pittsburgh Con 2012 Sketchbook, nya!

The latter is the Black & White version of the purrior color Pterodactyl pic! Meriem is not only seen with the dinosaurs, but also with the giant furry monsters, and the cute giant bunny of the Cavewoman: Bunny Ranch, edition, nya! That is Bun’s favorite image of the lot, nya! There is also the non-Meriem pic of Lady Death: Secrets #1 from 2009, depicting Brian Pulido’s character Lady Death in her bikini with the tiger on the leash, nya! The interior & exterior of the back cover are the color ads for 35 other items, nya! I wish all of this gallery was in color, but It is such intricate gorgeous art of the characters, critters, and the landscapes, however, given the nudity, ribaldry, and some of the scary monsters, it is not for the widdle kitties, nya! Nyow we will travel from the purrimordial jungle to the alien world of

Dejah Thoris and the Green Men of Mars #1

(warning: plot spoilage), nya!

Nyanko:

Arigato! Dynamite Entertainment is quite adept at publishing the comic books starring  the famous fierce fantasy femme fatales such as Vampirella, Miss Fury, Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris and other feisty damsels! In the Warlord of Mars planetary romance tales by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Dejah is the brave, heroic purrincess & girl friend of the warrior John Carter of Earth, in the city-state named Helium on the planet we call Mars, which the locals call Barsoom! She is is the brave noble leader with the keen scientific mind, and she is actually several centuries older than her boyfriend John, but does not look it! She is also known for the very exotic, skimpy outfits of the ornate Gold and the royal jewels that barely cover her lovely Red skin and her long Black hair, but she is not the fashionable exception, as the alien couture of the Barsoomian heat tends to be of the minimalist style for everyone, including her boyfriend John, who is originally from Virginia of the late 1800’s!

Compurred to the books, the characters were the bit over – dressed in last year’s John Carter movie, which we reviewed in the Apurril 2012 Mew! Well, back to this comic book, the issue is purriced $3.99 and intended for the mature readers, I suspect due to those scantily clad characters, the brutal torment and the violent fighting scenes, so it is not for the widdle kitties! The 20 page tale plus the Dynamite mews page, the glimpse at the forthcoming Red Team comic, the 6 pages of the ads compurrise this full color 32 page issue. The tale was written by Mark Rahner, drawn by Lui Antonio, colored by Arison Aguier, lettered by Marshall Dillon, and edited by Joe Rytbandt! There are nine different covers for this issue, some rarer and more risque than others, including the 2 versions of Mel Rubi’s cover art, the 2 versions of Ale Garza’s cover art, the 2 versions of Lui Antonio’s cover art, and the 3 variants of Jay Anacleto’s exquisitely beautiful main cover image of Dejah!

Nyoka:

By the way, I am purrticularly fond of Jay Anacleto’s sumptuous Aria tales at Image comics, not to be confuzzled with the Belgium Aria graphic novels by Michel Weyland or the Japanese Aria manga by Kozue Amano! But I digress, and the Dejah tale begins with the very well – drawn but unkind montage of poor Dejah in the unpleasant purrdicament, tormented by the big burly Thark thugs, until they are slain by the sword of her boyfriend John. The Tharks are the titular four-armed Green Men! Dejah is the very capable, tough leader, but unfortunately over the centuries of the savage conflict, some of the incidents have not gone her way and she has needed the occasional rescue! Although the truce between Helium & Thark has ushered the somewhat more peaceful time, there is still much bitterness on both sides! Later Dejah and Voro the Thark stride the streets in purrepurration for the united festivial, but Voro’s feigned congeniality is the treacherous ruse to lure Dejah into the Thark kidnappurrs’ trap!

The pages’ panels seem purrdominantly of the medium & close up views of the characters, with much of the attention upon their bodies, blades, chains & pains. There are a few farther views of the groups in the fierce melee, riding across the desert, and strolling the urban scenes, although I wish there was more attention given to the opulent architecture and the alien landscapes! Sadly Dejah is the captive victim for much of the issue. Of course, even the best heroes get caught, but the distress seems to happen to her frequently! I hope that she will soon be in control  of the situation, to outsmart & overpower those thugs who want to serve her as the main course! I hope that the only thing they will get to taste will be the blades of sharp steel served by Dejah herself, without having to rely on John’s lucky rescue yet again! We do not want to spoil much more of the plot, so nyow we will migrate from the hot desert of Barsoom to the snowy forest of Robert E Howard’s ancient Hyboria for our review of

Red Sonja: Unchained #1

(warning: plot spoilage)

Nyanko:

Arigato! Sonja is the she-devil of the Hyrkanian Steppes is one of my favorite characters, not only known for her lovely Red hair and her peerless purrowess in the combat, but purrhaps more so for her iconic scale – mail bikini! However. she does wear the other outfits, such as the the chain mail shirt, the leather armor and the plunging Blue demon pelt outfit in this 1st of the the 4 issue mini – series sequel to the Red Sonja: Blue tale which we reviewed for August 2011! Unchained #1 is purriced $3.99 & rated Teen+ due to the gory violence & skimpy attire, although not quite as skimpy as Dejah’s! Sonja also differs from Dejah in that she is almost never the one in need of rescue, because she is typically in charge and her enemies are no match for her supurreme wits & combat purrowess!

The 32 pages are compurrised of the 22 page tale plus the mews page, the Red Team comics purreview, and the 4 pages of the ads! It was written by Peter Brett who wrote Unchained, pencilled by Jack Jadsen, colored by Marcelo Pinto, lettered by Simon Bowland and edited by Joseph Rybandt, nya! This comic is available in the choice of the 4 variant covers by Mel Rubi! It is set right after the Blue tale, with the handy flashbacks for those who might not have read the purrior tale in which Sonja rescued the sacrificial victim from the demon who tore off her bikini, so she killed & skinned the demon to wear its pelt until the metal bikini could be repaired! Later at the village tavern, she got into the deadly duel with the very lovesick, pestering fool whom he rescued, and purromplty decapurrtated him!

Nyoka:

Hai that was the regrettable incident, so at the start of this issue she needs to leave the town late at night even before her bikini can be repaired, and rides her Black horse on the frigid winter road into the wilderness to dispose of the corpse! Normally she would just leave her slain enemies wherever they fall, but in this case she cares for his circumstance and repurrtation! Purrhaps the demonic pelt has the affect? Down the road she finds more trouble from the camp of the quarreling mercenaries, who are harass one of the women! After the bloody melee, the rescued woman tells Sonja the legend of the nearby tomb of Queen Gheta the warrior Queen of Ilazarr, which Sonja decides to explore in search of treasure, even though there are likely to be the deadly traps & creatures in the tomb!

This adventure has all of the ingredients such as the tavern, monster, wilderness, the tomb legend, Sonja’s grumbling, and the sword fight! The art is quite detailed, including the full-page panel and the large panels of the remorse, burial, mercs, tomb entrance and the Gheta legend! There are great costumes for Sonja, the female mercs & Gheta who might be the homage to another famous warrior woman of the comics, Ghita of Alizarr, who was drawn by Frank Thorne, one of the top artists associated with Sonja! I think Red Sonja: Unchained was off to the fun start, I definitely purrfurred to see Sonja in charge of her destiny compurred to Dejah as the purrey, and I hope to read the rest of the mini – series! Nyow we will go from the ancient slayer to the modern slayer, as Jenjen tells us about

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 9 #18

(warning: plot spoilage)!

Jeannie:

Arigato. The officially canonical 9th season of Buffy brilliantly continues in the 28 page comic book purriced which is $2.99 from Dark Horse Comics, and compurrised of the 22 page tale “Welcome To The Team Part Four, plus the 2 pages of the readers’ & editor’s interesting comments and the 4 pages of the advertisements. The tale was scripted by Andrew Chambliss, purrduced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon, pencilled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Dexter Vines, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt, designed by Justin Crouch, edited by Sierra Hahn, Scott Allie, and assitantly edited Freddye Lins! The issue is available in the choice of 2 different covers, the Illyria cover art  by Phil Noto, and the variant Buffy covert art by Jeanty, Madsen and Vines. This is the very critical issue with the major turning points, revelations, the character developments, peppurred with the brief dashes of the slayage, as the Demon Council adjourns after Buffy and Koh arrive too late to defeat Severin and assist Illyria, who more resembles Winnifred Burkle after the villain absorbed her demon powers.

Severin nyow has Illyria’s hair color as he rendezvouses with evil co-conspurrator slayer Simone in her lair, as she conducts fiendish expurriments upon her own follower with the zompires. We learn more about Anaheed after she and Billy slay a few more zompires and then conduct the detective work with Dowling in the hospital. After Tumble tells Buffy to call Xander, she, Illyria and Koh rendezvous at the home of Andrew, who attempts to transfer her mind into the Buffy Bot’s body, in the despurrate move to save Dawn from the coma. They discover the cause of Dawn’s plight and the very emotional five page argument scene with Xander. The characters so expurressive & dynamically posed, with the faithful resemblance to the actors of the TV shows. The colors are so richly vibrant, from the Blue hues of the demon hair to the luminous Green of the vampire disintegration. The tale continues to have the supurrb balance of the drama, humor, action, mythology and character development at the good pace, which I will give the grade of the “A” as in Annaheed. Speaking of the names beginning with the A, nyow I wish to discuss

Angel & Faith #19

Jeannie:

Arigato. In the “Death and Consequences” story full of flashbacks to the late Rupert ‘Ripper’ Giles’s younger years, Angel & Faith have been trying resurrect him in London, but his body was been stolen from the grave & possessed by evil Ethan Rayne, who lead Nadira & other slayers into a demonic trap, in in Rayne’s mansion, full of zombies controlled by the giant, extremely powerful demon Eyghan. In the purrevious issue, Angel, Faith, Nadira and four other slayers barely escaped, leaving behind several possessed comrades, and retreated to the lair of Alasdair Coames the sorcerer, to mend the injuries, research the threat, and arm themselves with magickal hardware, when Spike arrived sometime after the events of his own recent mini-series. This brings us up to the conclusion of this 4 part arc of the series which is part of the canonical Buffy Season 9 continuity, scripted by Chistos Gage, produced by Joss Whedon, illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, colored by Dan Jackson, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, designed by Justin Crouch, edited by Sierra Hahn & Scott Allie with Freddye Lins.

The $2.99 purriced, 28 page issue is compurrised of the 22 page tale, 2 pages of the interesting comments by the readers’ & editor, and the 4 pages of the advertisements, all sammiched between choice of the 2 different exterior front cover illustrations  to choose from, one by Steve Morris and the other by Isaacs & Jackson. Nyow for the taste of issue #19’s plot, which begins with another flashback of younger Giles and his grandmother slaying the vampires at the disco, and then resumes the gathering at Comes residence with the amewsing banter & Nadira’s anger which are soon interrupted when Eyghan, the possessed Giles, and the minions arrive for more of the melee. The issue has the great plot, pace, continuity, mythology, characters, dialogue amongst much fierce combat of the slayers, vampires, demons & zombies; the humorous & dramatic moments, and the major turning point for Faith’s team & Angel. I thought Angel & Faith #19 was quite beautifully written, lettered, drawn & colored, and I give it the grade of the “A” as in Angel. Nyow I will turn The Mew over to Nyo-sensei who wishes to discuss

Willow #5

Nyoka:

Arigato! I have been extremely enjoying this brilliant 5 issue mini – series starring Willow, who is one of my favoritest characters! It occurs after her appurrance in Angel & Faith #14! Although I do wish all the friends were together, I was so delighted by this Willow – driven Wonderland which is part of Buffy Season 9, because not only does it focus on her and fit into the official continuity, but it is so supurrbly written and illustrated! In case anyone is not familiar with Willow Rosenberg, she is one of the original main characters of Buffy the vampire Slayer, as Buffy’s best friend the brave, powerful, genius witch! Willow has appurred in Dark Horse Comics’ Buffy Season 8 & Season 9 series, which canonically continue their adventures under the supurrvision of Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon!

At the end of Season 8, Buffy destroyed the special magick seed, and thusly disrupted the flow of magick to the Earth, so Willow has since been searching the other dimensions for the way to replenish the magick.Armed with the Slayer’s Scythe, this expurrdition has taken Willow to the different worlds such as the “Wonderland” realm of the monsters, fellow witches, and the reunion with her lover Aluwyn the Naga girl, but it might be the seductive purradise from which Willow might not wish to leave! However, there has been the other less desirable reunion too, because in the purrevious issue she discovered that Marrack the bestial mage was actually the evil magick – pusher named Rack from the TV series! That brings us up to the final issue of Wonderland, mini – series compurrised of the 22 page tale plus the 2 pages of interesting comments by the readers & editor, the 4 pages of the ads, and the choice of the 2 lovely variant covers, one by David Mack and the other by Megan Lara!

The tale was scripted by Jeff Parker & Christos Gage, drawn by Brian Ching, inked by Jason Gorder, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Sierra Hahn, Scott Allie, assitantly edited Freddye Lins, designed by Justin Crouch, published by Mike Richardson, and exexcutively purrduced by Joss Whedon! Much of this issue is the colossal magickal duel between Willow and Rack, accented by the arguing, the flashback,  more revelations, and the amazing cosmic imagery of the grande climax! I do not wish to further spoil the plot, so I will just comment on how beautiful the tale has been in every aspect! I love the he plot, pace & dialogue, the designs of the characters, creatures & scenery, the art style of the expurressions, poses & graphic narrative, and the dazzling colors, fonts & FX! I will give this Willow mini-series the grade of the “A” as in Aluwyn! Nyow to continue the reviews of the comics magick here is Tara-chan to tell us about

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #4!

Tara-chan:

Arigato, nya! We are fans of the My Little Pony animated TV series, and- and I like to collect the Pony cards and – and figurines,, nya! I want a Banker Pony too, but that might take the while, nya! In the meantime I have been excited about this supurrb comic book published by IDW, nya! Issue #4 is purriced at $3.99, it has the 22 page 4th chapter of the tale, plus the bonus Spike dragon tale, and- and the 8 pages of the ads, all sammiched betwixt the choices of the many variant covers, nya! Inside the covers is the gallery of the dozen different covers, so that you can see them all, nya. I got Pony cover A by the epic team of Amanda Connor and- and Paul Mounts, nya! The 22 page chapter was written by Katie Cook, drawn by Andy Price, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Robbie Robbins, and – and edited by Bobby Curnow, nya! Thus far the mane six ponies of Twliight Sparkle, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and – and Apple Jack traveled though the caves and – and forest filled with the dangerous monsters on their way to the kingdom of the wicked Queen Chrysalis who has kidnapped younger fillies Apple Bloom, Scootaloo and – and Sweetie Belle, nya!

In this 4th issue the heroines have arrived at the Queen’s spooky dark castle to rescue the fillies, but once inside the castle there are the many floors and doors they have to check, nya! The rescue mission is full of the amewsing dark humor and – and the cute purrody, until the big duel betwixt Twilight Sparkle and Queen Chrysalis, with the humorous, tense and- and the thrilling moments, nya! The wonderful characters, the scenery, and – and the FX are all so purrfectly rendered in the great style that is so faithful to the TV series, nya! The colors are so richy vibrant, and – and I purrticularly like all the poses, the gestures and- and the expurressions, nya! After the mane chapter is the 2 page peek at what widdle Spike the Dragon and – and elegant Purrincess Celestia were busy with Canterlot during the three day rescue mission, nya! I think it has been the purrfectest pony comic book, which I will give the grade of the A as in the apples, nya! Nyow I would like to report on

My Little Pony Micro Series #2, nya!

Tara-chan:

Nyow I would like to say the bit about the companion series from IDW, which focuses on a purrticular pony purr issue, nya! In the first issue the focus was upon Twilight Sparkle, and –  and the 2nd issue focuses upon Rainbow Dash, with the assistance of her friends Apple Jack and Tank the turtle, nya! This comic book is also of the $3.99 purrice, with the 22 page tale plus the 10 pages of the ads, and – and the numerous variant covers to choose from, nya. The pony’s tale was written by Ryan K Lindsay, illutrated by Tony Fleecs, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Bobby Curnow, and the mane 3 cover choices are by Amy Mebberson, Tony Fleecs, and – and Sabrina Alberghetti, but there are also more of the rarer retailer exclusive covers, nya! I have cover version A by Amy which is the beautiful image of the pony zooming through the sky with the multicolor trail, nya! The fun tale is literally off to the flying start as Rainbow Dash and – and the Wonderbolts aerobatics team soar above the festival, but soon the aerial show takes the darker turn when Rainbow gets stuck in the stormy cloud, nya!

The storm cloud with the lightning would be bad enough, but this purrticular cloud is especially threatening, not just in the meteorological aspect to ruin the festival, but it casts the dark aire of the dour depurression across the town, resulting in a very grim month for everypony! However, Rainbow does not relent in her spectacular aerial attempts to dissuade and – and to thwart the cloud, which hides the sinister secret, nya! Like the other pony comic, this one is so supurrb with the fun adventure plot, the faithful spirit of the TV series, the great characterizations, the dialogue, and the purrfect pony pace, nya! I purrticularly like the art style, the poses, expurressions, the gestures, and – and the action, nya! Rainbow is so cute in the air as she tries her various maneuvers with the dazzling FX in spite of her poor tired wings, nya! I also enjoyed the scenes on the ground, with Applejack’s cart full of the apple treats, nya! I will give it the A and eagerly await the next issue, which will focus upon Rarity, nya!  OK I am done, but there is still more of the magick to review, so here is Trini-chan to discuss

Fairest #13, nya!

Trini-chan:

Arigato! Fairest is the spin-off series of the DC / Vertigo Comics’ Fables created by Bill Willingham, about the characters of myth & lore who reside secretly among the mortal populace in the Fabletown district of New York and other certain places in the world! Fairest spotlights some of the female characters, and The Hidden Kingdom story arc which began in issue #8 focuses upon Rapunzel in her journey to Japan to find her long lost children! Joining her on the travel are hair stylist Joel the crow and Jack the naughty lad, with her witchy mother Frau Totenkinder & Fabletown’s Sheriff Bigby Wolf not far behind! Awaiting them in Japan are allies & enemies of the Japanese folklore such as Katagiri the Kappa Imp, Neko the magickal cat, Mayumi the Kuchisake-onna, Tomoko the Kitsune and numerous other Yokai! Tomoko is the enemy, but it is the sad tale of the mistaken betrayal, and she has the lovely Red hair, although it is not as long as Rapunzel’s magickal golden coiffure!

The tale hopes from the modern era to the ancient past as we see the tragic origin of the situation and the relationships! It was written by Lauren Beukes, illustrated by Iniki Minada, colored by Eva De la Cruz, lettered by Todd Klein, edited by Shelly Bond, and assistantly edited by Gregory Lockard, with the consultation by the Fables series creator Bill Willingham, and the cover art by Adam Hughes! This $2.99 issue has the 32 full color pages comprised of the 22 page tale of “The Hidden Kingdom Part Six: The Hundred Demons Night Parade”1”, the 6 page preview of Constantine #1, and the 4 pages of the ads. This issue picks up shortly after Part 5, on the eve of the battle between Rapunzel’s army and Tomoko’s army in modern Tokyo, as both sides respectively strategize. Mayumi barely escapes with her life after confronting angry Rapunzel and her commanded swarm of hairy bezoars, and retreats back to the kitsune’s lair, where tricky Jack defects to Tomoko’s side- or does he?

At the Sumo school, Katagiri, Neko, Totenkinder & Bigby summon the Yokai allies from across Japan! They are many different types of supurrnatural creatures with the claws, fangs, spells & firearms in the conflict as Rapunzel calls out Tomoko, but there are also the other very emotional, dramatic character developments as this story arc reaches the climax! It is such a captivating, poignant, bittersweet tale, with such lavishly rendered characters, sexy & pretty clothes, intricate landscape & architectural detail, but it is suggested for the mature readers due to the violence, harsh language and the other tidbits! My favorite moments of this issue are the hundred demons’ arrival, the full page of Rapunzel in the street, Bigby’s lupine transformation, Joel’s avian transformation, the six pages of the aftermath, and the cover art of Rapunzel on the huge wolf! “The Hidden Kingdom” story has concluded, but I will keep reading the series! Nyow here is Myayr to discuss our other current favorite DC Comic

Ame-Comi Girls #1!

Mary Nyan:

Ame-Comi Girls is another of our favoritest DC comics of the past few years! It is the series starring the versions of the DC heroines and villainesses based upon the line of anime style statues which we like to collect! The tale began as the 5 issue mini-series which continues into this mew series! Purreviously, the heroines and villainesses were fighting each other, but when Brainiac arrived to destroy the world, they all teamed up to stop her! Then things got worse when Brainiac’s Black Kyptonite caused Supergirl to become evil! The series is written Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray, lettered by Wes Abbot, colored by Randy Mayor, edited by Jim Chadwick, assistantly edited by Sarah Gaydos! Each issue thus far has been drawn by a different artist, and this issue’s art is by Eduardo Francisco!

He also did one of the cover illustrations, and the variant cover is the photo cover by DC Collectibles! The $3.99 issue has the 2 different covers and the 40 full color pages comprised of the 30 page tale of “The Rise of Brainiac Part 1”, the credits page, the 6 page purreview of Contantine #1, the 3 pages of the ads, and the intermew page with Greg Capullo. This issue picks up right where mini-series ended, as Wonder Woman confronts the corrupted Supergirl! It is the battle royale of the femme fatales including The Flash, Steel, Robin, Batgirl, Duela, Catwoman, Harley, Ivy, the Manhunters, and Brainiac’s flying gynoid army, with much focus upon Power Girl and Brainiac! I think everyone is in it except for The Cheetah and the Silver Banshees who purreviously appeared in the mini-series!

As the big battle royale rages above, Power Girl flies underground to confront Brainiac at the Earth’s core, as the villain’s huge mech spires erupt through the ground all around the world! She has the added purrsonal stake, because Brainiac is who destroyed her home world of Krypton! This issue is so very thrilling with much of the great characters in the combat & purroblem solving! The art is great, from all of the character designs & gorgeous costumes to the mecha designs and the rich luminous color and FX! Adding to the visual storytelling are the 7 impurressive full-page panels, depicting the girls witnessing the rise of Brainiac’s gigantic mecha structures, Wonder Woman charging at Supergirl, Brainiac approaching, and Power Girl caught by the glowing, arcing mecha tentacles!

My other favorite moments include Steel bursting from the ice, Batgirl using her gadget, Catwoman’s revival, Wonder Woman’s sword fighting, Power Girl’s flashback, and the alarming cliffhanger that leaves me eager for the next issue! I noticed that Ame-Comi Girls and Fairest are purrinted upon the different papurr stock; Fairest has the sort of matte finish with the rougher tooth, whereas Ame-Comi girls has the slicker glossy stock. This seems appurropurriate, given the ancient folklorish nature of the former, compared to the more gleaming sci – fi anime nature of the latter! It is the fun and gorgeous comic book and we have even considered the Ame-comi cosplay for Halloween! Speaking of the heroine teams of the great costumes, here is the triple tail – tag team to discuss the longly awaited

Fem Force #162!

Yvonne:

Hai, since our September 2012 Mew’s Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight on She-Cat, Kitten, we have been counting down the time until this special issue, nya! Few comics repurrsent the grrl – power as much as Fem Force, which has celebrated their 30th anniversary in the comics, having been published by AC Comics since 1984’s Femforce Special, nya! They are based in Florida! Created by Bill Black, Fem Force is the government sanctioned team of the alluring supurr heroines from across space and time, with the sexy costumes, numerous facilities & resources to respond to the emergencies! The team has been compurrised of Ms. Victory, Nightveil, Synn, Tara, Stardust, Colt, Rio Rita, the numerous others and the various other allied heroes they often coopurrate with, nya!

Edited by author / artists Bill Black & Mark Heike, issue #162 is Is the special anniversary issue purriced $9.95 for its 76 Black & White pages full of the wall – to – wall fun with 6 tales and no ads, nya! It is off to the rousing start with Brad Gorby’s full color front cover illustration of She – Cat, Nightveil & Synn against the teensy space men and the giant Pink Kitty, nya! She – Cat wears the strapless Red maillot with matching boots, gloves & mask; Synn wears the Carmine colored sleeveless dress with the chest & hip cut outs, the short skirt, knee boots, mask, gloves and hoop earrings; Nightveil wears the Dark Blue mask, maillot & thigh high boots, completed by the long flowy Purrple hooded cloak & opurra-length gloves, and the inside of the cloak is the beautiful star field, nya!

We have considered the notion of the Femforce costumes for our Halloween Trick R Eat & group cosplay purrowl too, so we have taken the notes and will mention the lovely appurral throughout the review, nya! On the inside of the front cover is the greeting by Black above the repurrinted Shade art by George Perez, nya! The first tale is the 16 pages of “The Commandos Are Coming”, written and lettered by Bill Black, pencilled by Eric Coile, Inked by Black with 2 pages inked by Scott Shriver, nya! It stars She – Cat, Ms. Victory, Synn, Stardust, Nightveil, Tara, Black Commando, Alizarin Crimson and Dr. Nikki Latimer, and it involves the treachery and the misunderstandings that will span between the Earth and the planet Zaltar, nya! (tags Bun with the swish of the cat tail)

Bun:

Dr. Mara / Stardust, has the tights outfit, cute bob coiffure & lovely pointed ears! She – Cat & Ms. Victory wear the maillot type costumes, Tara wears the tiger stripe bikini, Alizarin Crimson wears the shiny bikini & the helmet, Synn wears the cut – out mini skirt outfit; Dr. Latimer wears her knee – length dress with the pumps & lab coat; and we see Nightveil in both her mewsual costume and in her ruffled lingerie with the sheer camisole! The action then moves up the coast from Orlando, Florida to South Carolina in the 18 page tale of “Golden Years”, pencilled by Rock Baker & Mark Heike, written by Heike, inked by Jeff Austin, lettered by e.t. Dollman, and stars She – Cat, Tara, Dr. Myla Chang, Dr. Layton Forrester, Paragon, Scarlet Scorpion, D-Man, and Rad in the big brawl after the bad day!

Dr. Chang has the cute pert outfit of the turtleneck, the mini skirt, lab coat and pumps; and Rad is the rowdy one in the backless tight costume with the deeply plunging neckline, but they need her to calm down to learn the secret that involves Ms Victory, who appears briefly in the flashback, wearing the tight pants & blouse with the bolero cut  jacket! Nextly the location continues the move north, unfortunately skipping our state on the way to Virginia, and back in time to 1942 in the 14 pages pertaining to “The Evil That Time Forgot”! It was written, drawn & lettered by Andre St-Amour, and stars Nightveil, her prior self as the Blue Bulleteer, and the gigantic inter-dimensional monster of the multi-verse! The tale is cute, cosmic and of the curious continuity across the timeline!

Then the realities shift to Kent State University and Vietnam of 1970 in the 11 page tale of “Tin Soldiers And…” written by Erik Matthews, drawn by Eric Coile, inked by Scott Shriver, lettered by Bill Black! It stars She – Cat, Nightveil, Ms. Victory, Synn, Rita, Blonde Bomber, Captain Paragon, and the surprise historical person! It is the buxom incident pertaining to the war and the campus incident.  Rita wears the long pants, knee boots & short sleeve shirt; the Blonde Bomber wears the mask, thigh highs and the tights with the neckline that plunges below her belly button, not unlike Ms. Victory’s tattered torpedo maillot – like costume, which is not enough to soothe the hostilities, so Synn’s supernatural intervention is required, with the gory and surprising results! (tags Petra)

Petra:

Fourthly is the very trippy ten page tale of “Team Paragon” written & pencilled by Coile, inked & lettered by Black, starring the alternate earlier purre-AC versions of Synn, Stardust, Captain Paragon, Scarlet Scorpion, Iron Claw, Black Shroud, gigantic Proxima, Hesta the snake grrl, the shark-like Brotherhood of Purity, and the few devourings! In the hallucinations induced by the villain’s chemical weapon, gigantic Proxima hopes to sate her appurrtite with the hero, not the hero sammich but Stardust is what she craves, whilst the Pterodactyles are feeling peckish for the bite of the Paragon, nya! Stardust’s alternate costume is the unmasked outfit of the cape, the buccaneer boots, and the scooped – neck tights, Proxima wears the shiny cut-out maillot with the knee boots & helmet; and Hesta’s costume seems to be the tights, which would seem appropurriate for the constriction, nya!

We see Synn in both her mewsual costume and in the psychedelic cage dance costume compurrised of the tassels, earrings, panty & boots that is almost as skimpy as Dejah Thoris’s costume, nya! The skimp, the violence and the hallucinations are purrobably not for the widdle kitties, nya! Then we go from the Iron Claw’s ocean platform to the US Army Base in the Middle East for the 7 page finale of “Nosey”, written by Mark Holmes, illustrated & lettered by St-Amour, and starring She – Cat and US Army choppurr pilot Lt. Denise Jazz, who join in the attack upon the terrorist camp, nya! She – Cat shreds the jump suit to reveal her mewsual costume in the cat fight with Powerfist, who wears the Black burka until her mummy wrap and fez hat are exposed, whilst Jazz rocks the cropped tank top, shorts and the trainers to duel her opponent Steel Scimitar who wears the ninja garb, nya!

That brings us to the back half of the cover, which has the repurrint of Paul Gulacy’s mystical Nightveil pic on the interior, and the repurrint of Pat Broderick & Bill Black’s pic of Captain Paragon fighting the Pterodactyl on the exterior, nya! Nyow I am pondering the taste of the Pterodactyle wings and the drumsticks, nya! We have to amend our September 2012 list of favorite Fem Force tales to include this issue, and we wish to congratulate the folks at AC Comics for the 30 years of the delightful comics and the longevity of the lovely ladies, nya! For more information about Fem Force & other titles by AC Comics, I recommend their official site http://www.accomics.com Nyow we will go from the AC Comics’ team to the Marvel comics’ team, as Mike tells us what the supurr assassin Gamora and her team mates are up to, nya! She has such lovely Green skin & hair, and she is deadliest woman in the galaxy, as her opponents quickly learn in the

Guardians of the Galaxy #1, nya!

Mike:

The Guardians of the Galaxy is one of Marvel Comics’ great super hero teams, which has been fighting against the galactic threats for over 4 decades in various incarnations, rosters & series, relaunched again in March with a most stellar creative team! Guardians of the Galaxy #1 was written by Brian Michael Bendis, pencilled by Steve McNiven, inked by John Dell, colored by Justin Ponsor, lettered by Cory Petit, edited by Stephen Wacker with assistant editor Ellie Pyle, associate editor Sana Amanat, and the production by Manny Mederos! The comic book is priced $3.99, rated T+, and its 28 pages include the 20 page story, the credits page, mail page, the gallery page showing the 16 gorgeous variant covers by various artists, and the 5 pages of ads.

The cast icnludes Starlord, his father the King of Spartax, Gamora, Iron Man (Tony Stark), Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon & Groot the plant monster, plus a few other familiar faces, and the exciting extravehicular space combat as the Guardians battle a Badoon space ship that attacks the Earth! The Badoon are an empire of reptilian humanoids, who have tried to conquer the Earth several times. They don’t seem to be giving up that nasty habit any time soon, but fortunately the heroes have a lot of expertise at fighting the Badoon! I liked the the pace of the story from the opening incident in the bar to the big battle, and the witty repartee amongst the Guardians, between Tony & Pepper, and between Starlord, his Dad, and the Kree woman at the bar!

I am curious about how the fight was picked between Gamora and the royal guards, and while it is nice to see her appropriately clobbering them with ease, I hope she’ll be extremely smart, clever and not just an amusing violent warrior just looking for a fight. While her attire is nicely drawn futuristic apparel, unfortunately it almost looks too much like the sort of military space armor that I’d want to see in Gundam, Halo or Mass Effect, and sadly it seems less like a Marvel Comics cosmic super heroine in colorful spandex. Starlord’s costume and Stark’s armor are not my favorite designs either, but otherwise the character, mecha and scenic art are highly detailed and so vibrantly colored, with beautiful expressions & poses amidst the dazzling special FX!

The pages are composed with several lovely large & panoramic panels; such as the wide shots of the galaxy & the architecture; and the 4 full-page pics including the gathering of Kree, Shi’ar, Brood and other imperial emissaries; Gamora clobbering the royal guards, Iron Man in orbit, and the final cliffhanger page! There’s also an impressive 2 page spread of the Guardians charging into battle! Although I’d rather see the most of the characters using cosmic powers than guns, gadgets & melee weapons, and I wish Adam Warlock, Mantis & Moondragon were with them; the 1st issue was OK and one of the few Marvel comics to interest me since Avengers Academy. Well that’s all of our comic book reports, but there are more comics characters we wish to praise in our

Toy & Game Reviews, with the review of the

Monster High Dance Class Howleen Wolf Fashion Doll!

Ilyana:

If anyone is unfamiliar with Mattel’s Monster High, it is the whimsical, cute supurrnatural series starring the teenage daughters & sons of the monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Werewolf, The Mummy, The Phantom and the others! Some of the main characters are Draculaura, Frankie Stein, Lagoona Blue, Cleo de Nile, Ghoulia Yelps, Abby Bominable, Operetta, and Clawdeen Wolf! I am amazed how many Monster High products there are! It seems like only yesterday when Mattel released the first batch of the fashion dolls, but since then has arisen the many other dolls, different versions, accessories, play sets, vehicles, plushies, electronic toys, children’s costumes, other collectibles, magazines, books, and the cartoons! There are several of the kemomimi amongst the characters, including the recent catgirl of the build-a-Cat / Witch assortment!

We have reviewed several of the items, from the Clawdeen doll in the September 2010 Mew, to the Friday Night Frights /  Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love? DVD in last month’s Mew! Clawdeen has several siblings such as brother Clawd & peppy younger sister Howleen! She is shorter with the lighter tan skin than her siblings, with the lupine ear pinna, the the Golden eyes, and the cute widdle fangs! The right Ear pinna is perpetually flopped over! In the cartoons she is voiced by producer, director, actress & seiyou America Young who also purrovides the voices of the mischievous nekomimi Meowlody Purrsephone & Toralei! There are the few doll versions of Howleen from Mattel, including the 2 pack of her and Clawdeen, and the Dance Class series including Howleen, Operetta, Rebecca Steam, Lagoona Blue which are each sold sepurrately! (tags Trini-chan)

Trini-chan:

Hai, Dance Class Howleen is packaged in the cardboard box with the clear plastic window, with the purretty character art & her comments! This is one of the simpler packages, which just contains the clothed doll & her Black boom – box shaped hand bag, but there is no pet, booklet  or display stand, included in this edition. I wonder what her pet hedgehog Cushion is up to? The stand would be handy, because the doll is not balanced enough to stand unassisted, so I will recommend the purrchase of an inexpensive doll stand, or posing her seated, reclined, or leaning against something when she is not in the play! At 10″ tall, she is an inch shorter than her sister Clawdeen, however the height includes the 1/4″ pinna and the 3/4″ high heel soles of her removable Blue trainers with the purple laces, so if Howeleen was flat-footed & flat-eared, she would be the 9″ doll!

She is very nicely sculpted & painted, from the ears. large eyes & lush full Pink lips, to her fine intricate fingers, the toes and her inny belly button! Her very lithe, slender body wears the tight dark Blue cloth capri pants with the Blue trim, Blue & Purple paw print pattern, beneath the light Blue, Purple trimmed, asymmetric strapped dance singlet with the paw & arrow dance – step print, and the plastic Pink pod belt & headphones! She has the widdle plastic Yellow safety pin in her Right ear pinna, and the bright Pink  fiber hair is pulled into the pigtails which is the different style & color from her purrior Golden Mowhawk! The ball joints allow the great range of poses, with points of articulation in the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips & knees, and the outfit is removable, so she can be dressed in other outfits which are sold separately. Now we have a surprise as we turn The Mew over to our web master Jamie to review the video game

Mass Effect 3: Citadel DLC!

Jamie:

Citadel is the final DLC (downloadable content) for Mass Effect 3. For those hoping for three hours plus of killing Reapers, delving deeper into the ME universe or a better ending will be disappointed.  The DLC instead offers fans of the franchise more time to spend w/ squadmates, love interests and throw a party. That’s all after the main mission of Citadel, which takes place on the Citadel and offers one of the most clichéd plot lines in the series. As a trade off the DLC also offers the best final boss fight of the entire game. It’s fair to say that Citadel is about 95% fan service and adds many features fans had clamored for since the end of ME3.One of the highlights of the pack has female Shepard (femshep) and Garrus doing the tango.

Citadel is a bit of a compromise as it gives a very hopeful yet bittersweet conclusion to the content before launching the player back into the main game and to experience one of the worst levels of the game and it’s controversial ending. It’s as if BioWare had intended for players to stop playing after Citadel if they wanted a happy ending to Mass Effect 3 (or even a coherent one) Viewed as a goodbye to the beloved characters of the series and Shepard herself, Citadel is more than worth it. And if you still want to shoot Reapers you can in the Armarx arena (Shepard in her own multiplayer style combat sim adds an hour to the DLC itself. So if you want funny, sweet and an ME reunion before the ending, Citadel is worth $15.00 as there is so much to do in the pack it feels like a mini expansion.

Mike:

Thanks pal! Jamie is also the we bmaster for Femshep.com http://femshep.ning.com , the fan site devoted to Mass Effect’s female Commander Shepard, and for his review of Mass Effect 3 please see the April 2012 Mew! Now here is Bun to begin our

Cinema, TV & DVD Reviews

with her review of Oz, The Great And Powerful!

Bun:

Hai! We like the Oz tales in the books and movies, and we eagerly awaited this movie! Upon learning of the cast & crew of the movie, including director Sam Raimi, composer Danny Elfman, James Franco as Oz, Michelle Williams as Glinda, Rachel Weisz as Evanora and Mila Kunis as Theodora, this only sweetened the expectations! There is even the brief appearance by Bruce Campbell as the guard! Of course, Raimi, Elfman, Franco & Campbell previously collaborated upon the Spider-Man movies! For those who came in late, the plot is the pre-Dorothy purrequel to The Wizard of Oz, purrtaining to the circus stage magician & inventor who gets caught in the tornado and carried to Oz, where he is believed to be the prophecised heroic wizard king who will defeat the evil witches! However, his is not the only mistaken identity or the ruse masquerading for the wealth, as he meets the witches, the Munchins, the Quadlings, River Fae, Finley the flying monkey voiced by Zach Braff, and one of my favoritest characters of the movie, the widdle China Girl who is voiced by Joey King! The fabulous costumes are another beautiful aspect, especially the witches’ clothes & accessories!

There was very little to disappoint me, although I think the movie did feel a bit rushed and short, and there was an inappropriate inclusion of a pop song by Mariah Carey during the end credits, which did not fit in the rest of the movie’s soundtrack. Please do no get me wrong – I like Mariah Carey a lot, but I don’t think there should have been any pop song by any one during the credits, when the rest of the mewsic is orchestral, but that is the worst thing I can say about the Oz movie! There are the poignant sad moments, the humorous fun, the homages & references, the thrilling chases & fights, the extravaganza of the visual effects, the beautiful sets with the high production values! It has some of the most majestic & beautiful fantasy landscapes I have ever seen, full of the blooming flowers & crystals, plus the magnificent architecture of the Emerald City, the intricate ornate decor, and the spooky forest! However, Sam Raimi also reminds us of his horror genre roots, with a few scary scenes of the tornado, the flying baboons and angry witches! So I was very pleased with Oz, The Great and Powerful, and I will give it the grade of the B Plus or A Minus! Now here is Petra to tell us about the

LIfe of Pi DVD!

Petra

Arigato, nya! Life of Pi is the adventure tale about the teenage boy named Pi from India who survives the shipwreck along with the Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker for a long time in the lifeboat, in the Pacific Ocean, nya! The PG rated, 123 minute movie of 2012 is based upon the 2001 novel by Yann Martel, and the adaptation was directed & purroduced by Ang Lee, who is known for Hulk, Brokeback Mountain, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, nya! It stars Suraj Sharma as teenaged Pi, Irrfan Khan as older Pi, and I was amazed to find out how much of the movie is all visual FX including the Tiger, nya! It is the very spiritual, beautiful, captivating tale which was nominated for the many Oscars and won the four for Best Director, Cinematography, Original Score and Visual FX, nya! The photography, FX and mewsic really are astounding, and the digital animals & environments looked totally real, nya! There are a few amazing dream sequences too, and such beautiful scenes in India purrior to the shipwreck, with the pools, the candle light ceremony, the sarees and the dancing, nya!

The single disk edition of the Region 1 NTSC Standard DVD purresents the movie in the letterboxed widescreen format in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with optional Bold White sans serif subtitles in English SDH, French & Spanish, nya. The audio choices are the English Dolby Digital 5.1, The English Descriptive Audio 5.1 of the female voice, French Dolby Digital Surround 2.0 & Spanish Dolby Digital Surround 2.0, nya. The DVD is sparse in the special features, with just the 19 1/2 minute documentary on the making of the movie’s FX, but it is quite fascinating to watch, nya! It includes the comments by Ang Lee, Suraj Sharma, editor Tim Squires, visual FX supurrvisor Bill Westenhofer of Rhythm and Hues, visual FX supurrvisor Guillaume Rocheron of MPC, and senior animation supervisor Erik-Jan de Boer, nya! They show the purractical mechanical FX of the boat, the Blue – Screen process, the purre-visualizations of the animals, shipwreck, and the stormy ocean, nya! Also on the disk are the movie’s trailer and the ads for Blue-Ray tech, Hitchcock, and Safe Haven, which brings us to our

H2O: Just Add Water The Complete Season 1 DVD Set!

Elizabeth:

Hai, H2O: Just Add Water is the 2006 Australian mermaid TV series that was shown in the USA on Nickelodeon! Created & purrduced by Jonathan M Schiff, it stars Cariba Heine as Rikki Chadwick, Claire Holt as Emma Gilbert, and Phoebe Tonkin as Cleo Sertori who are the three teen girls who transform into mermaids when they get wet, ever since a visit to a mysterious island’s grotto pool under the full moon light! Not only do their legs become purretty Orangey colored mermaid tails, and whatever clothes they wear become the bikini top to match the tail, but they can stay underwater for a long time & each has a special supurr power over water- Emma can cause it to freeze, Rikki can heat it up & Cleo can telekinetically move it. These new abilities have advantages & disadvantages in addition to the mewsual teen girl concerns! The supurr powers can be fun & helpful in the emergencies, but they can also be the inconvenient curse with the tail that cannot be hidden when they get wet!

It is definitely the purroblem under the full moon, which has the hypnotic and the other effects upon the girls if the moonlight shines upon them! They try to hide indoors on such nights, but the trouble mewsually arises with the moon! The show has a generally amewsing tone, but there are some more serious epurrsodes too! Their brainy friend Lewis (Angus McLaren) and mystical kindred friend Ms Louise Chatham (Christine Amos) help to purrotect the mermaid secrets, but Cleo’s younger sister Kim (Cleo Massey) is the suspicious, arrogant wealthier classmate Zane (Burgess Abernathy) is obsessed with the purroving he saw the sea creature, and Meriam (Annabelle Stevenson) is the mean-spirited rival! Other recurring characters  of the first season include the girls’ purrents, their friend Byron (Christopher Poree) who might be interested in Emma, and the scientist Dr. Denmon (Lara Cox) who could be trouble for the mermaids if she makes the discovery! (tail-tags Trini-chan)

Trini–chan:

In addition to the great cast, H2O benefits from the terrific cinematography of such beautiful scenery on land & underwater at Australia’s Gold Coast & Sea World in Queensland! Most of the episodes are directed by Jeffrey Walker or Colin Bud, and it is the very well written, acted & directed family entertainment with great production values, pleasing mewsic, Dolphins, yummy fish, charming special effects & the girls’ lovely clothes and prosthetic mermaid tails, and plenty of the amewsing situations, magick and the romance! There has been the merchandise too, such as the Cleo, Emma & Rikki dolls which we reviewed in February 2010! In June 2010 we reviewed the H2O Just Add Water Season 1 Volume 1, which just included the first 13 episodes on the 3 DVD-R disks On that edition, the opening titles sequence was included only with  the first episode on each disk, but this new R1 NTSC Standard edition 4 disk set has all 26 episodes of the 1st season fully intact, plus the condensed TV movie version!

The packaging is similar to the purrior edition, with the photo of the mermaids smiling at us from the beach, and the 4 disks in the inner hinged tray. Otherwise it is the fairly no-frills package with no boklet, galleries, documentaries or commentaries, but you do get the delightful season that totals the 650 minutes plus the 91 minute movie, which are presented in the letterboxed widescreen format in the English language only, with no other audio tracks or the subtitles. The only menu choice is to either select each episode or to click to play them all. The label on Disk 4 indicates there is also the bonus behind – the – scenes special, but it is not to be found, so I guess it is the mispurrint, since the special is included with the season 3 set! I wish there were more bonus features such as the commentaries, documentaries, galleries  or the booklets, but I definitely prefer this 4 disk set to the purrior 3 disk set of the wonderful series, and nyow to continue the H20 here is Vonny to tell us about the!

H2O: Just Add Water The Complete Season 2 DVD Set!

Yvonne:

Hai, the mermaids return for the 2nd season of the 26 episodes which originally broadcasted in Australia from the Autumn of 2007 to the Spurring of 2008, nya! Cleo, Emma, Rikki & Lewis are back, along with  a much nicer Zane, Lewis’s annoying rival Nate (Jamie Timony), Cleo’s sister Kim & their dad (Alan David Lee) although their mom has left them, nya! Also absent in the 2nd season are Meriam, Byron, Zane’s dad and Christine Amos as Ms. Chatham, although we do see the flashbacks of her younger mer- self (Terri Haddy), along fellow mermaids Julia (Taryn Marler) & Gracie (Ashleigh Brewer), nya! The cast also includes more of Emma’s widdle brother Elliot (Trent Sullivan), their mom (Caroline Kennison), dad (Jared Robinsen), and Emma’s boss Wilfred (Ariu Lang Sio) at the Juicenet Cafe where the gang tends to congregate, nya! The romance continues between Zane & Rikki, we meet her dad (Andy McPhee) there is more romance in the air when Emma meets equestrian instructor Ash (Craig Horner), and the love triangle erupts when new student Charlotte (Brittany Byrnes) wants to date Lewis, much to Cleo’s displeasure, nya!

The Cleo / Lewis relationship has become strained, but there is further strain when the mermaid powers greatly increase and get out of control due to the lunar effect!, nya! The comedic, dramatic, romantic & dangerous situations do not help the trio’s desire to keep the tails the secret, but there are fascinating developments, revelations, and the big mer- surpurrise, nya! Season 2’s other recurring characters include Max (Martin Vaughan) who knows the secrets, his younger self (Matthew Scully) in the 1950’s flashbacks, and Charlotte’s mom (Tiffany Lamb)! I think the 2nd season of H20 keeps betting better and better, and most of my favorite epurrsodes of the 2nd season are in the latter portion such as “Fish Fever”, “Moonstruck”, “The Heat Is On”, the 2 part tale of “The Gracie Code”, and the story arc of the six final epurrsodes, nya! The 2nd season DVD set is very similar to the 1st season set, with the 26 epurrsodes plus the 93 minute abridged TV movie version on the 4 disks, nya! Although it is lacking in the frills or special features, it contains the many hours of the delightful & beautiful mermaid fun, nya! Nyow here are Petra & Bun to review the

H2O Just Add Water The Complete Season 3 DVD Set, nya!

Petra:

Hai, and there are further cast changes for the 3rd season of H20, which has the big differences from the first two seasons, nya! Cleo, Kim, their dad, Rikki, Zane, Lewis, Nate, and dolphin trainer Louie (Matthew Okine) are back, but the biggest change is the departure of Emma and her family, who are said to be away on the world tour, nya! Not only are Emma, Elliot, and their parents absent, but so is Ash, Charlotte, her mom, and Wilfred, nya! That is another big change, because now Zane & Ricki are the purroprietors of the juice cafe which has been renovated and renamed as Rikki’s! Succeeding Emma is mew mermaid Bella (Indiana Evans) and as her romantic interest is free diver Will (Luke Mitchell), nya! He has the feisty redhead sister Sophie purrtrayed by Taryn Marter, who purreviously purrtrayed mermaid Julia in the 50’s flashbacks, nya!

The ladies have such beautiful dresses, shorts outfits, and the swim wear, and Cleo starts to wear glasses, nya! She and Lewis are still the couple, but there is a big change for his plans this season, and the romance also springs for Cleo & Kim’s dad who starts dating lovely Sam (Penni Gray), nya! This initially bothers Kim, who certainly looks older & taller, nya! The season purremier episode introduces the changes at the lightning – pace, including the show’s brand new opening, closing and songs, and there seem to be more songs in the 3rd season too, nya!  Cleo & Rikki lament the missing Emma but immediately welcome Bella, who is the mew transfer student who got her mermaid powers when she was 9 years old exploring the similar moon pool cave in Ireland, nya! She can sing much more beautifully at the cafe than Nate can, nya! (tags Bun)

Bun:

Other differences are in the conditions of the Mako Island moon pool cave and the lunar affect, because the girls do not seem quite as bothered by the full moon fever as they begin their senior year of high school, but they are more concerned by the dangerous attacks by the mysterious water tentacles which originate from the strange new waterfall in the cave! The other plots include the romance & the business relationship between Rikki & Zane, the relationships between Bella, Will & Sophie, the romances for the Sertori family, and more worries about Mako Island as the graduations appurroach for Cleo, Rikki & Bella! The 4 disks 3rd season DVD set is similar to the 1st & 2nd season sets, with the 26 episodes & condensed TV movie version, but this set also includes the 25 minute Behind The Scenes featurette!

It is the insightful fun hosted by Caribe, Phoebe and Indiana, with the comments by Angus, Burgess, Jamie, Luke, Taryn, producer Jonathan M Schiff and director Jeffrey Walker! They examine the various aspects of the show, including the tails, swimming, stunts, underwater photography, the dolphins, Sea World, Gold coast locations, the sets, the schedules, clothes, make up, FX, music, and the bloopers!  I found out that the mer tails have over 5.000 hand- applied scales, and weigh over 40 kilograms when wet! This concludes the DVD portion of the show, but If y’all would like to know more about H20: Just Add Water, we recommend the H2O Wiki http://h2o.wikia.com/wiki/H2O:_Just_Add_Water_Wiki, the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H2O:_Just_Add_Water, the Internet movie database entry http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0491603, and the prorducer’s official H2O site http://www.jonathan-m-shiff.com.au/h2o!
