Mike:

I think most of the islanders here in the audience know of the theatre’s history, but perhaps Mie-sensei could say a few words about the place to our other viewers?

Mielikki:

Hai! So like, The Faeries’ Forest Grove Theatre is the intimate outdoor ampurrtheatre hewn from the totally awesome ancient mystical stones, nestled amongst the boulders in the Island’s maritime forest, fur shur! It is like SO easily accessible by bicycle or golf cart! If coming from beautiful downtown Purrbank, go North East on Cait Sith Lane, past the waterfalls and follow the signs! You can’t miss the paved stone path into the grove, with the Pandanus blossoms and the Foxfire lanterns by the entrance! It has this seriously storied history across the centuries as a gathering place of the Outer Banks Fae, and today it is home of our repurrtory company’s theatre & other outdoor performances! It is also the popular spot for the hikers’ picnic, the departure for the guided nocturnal nature walks, the weddings, the good spot to curl up with books & treats! Our Summer schedule & ticket information are at the box office, the delicious beverages & treats at the concession booth, and we hope y’all will enjoy the show!

Petra:

We would like to take this oppurrtunity to mention the beautiful images of the fae in the theatre by our friend Rebecca Brogden http://www.rbrogdenart.com, nya!

Bun:

Hai hai we have brought with us these three beautiful pics from the Catgirl Island mewseum of Art, which depict Alaua’mina-sensei http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/77.html, Wyrdina-sensei http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/77.html, and Mielikki-sensei http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/78.html!

Mielikki:

(her flattered bioluminescent mood wings turn the Magenta hue) Oh gosh!

Jeannie:

Your wings are bushing.

Elizabeth:

Wow they are glowing up a Pink Storm!

Trini-chan:

The art is beautiful but purrhaps we should shift the subject!

Mary Nyan:

Tara-chan:

Oh oh I have been thinking about the favorite mansions list, and I forgot to include Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, nya!

Meryl:

It is seconded!

Mielikki:

It is thirded, and now it is the time for Petra to begin the

Art & Illustration portion of The Mew

with the Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!

Petra:

We are purroud to purresent three mew additions to The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, nya! For those who are here for the first time, Galleries 1-6 display Mike’s illustrations and photos, whilst Guest Galleries 1 & 2 display images from other folks with their kind purrmissions, nya! On the web site, the most recent pics are on the bottom row of the widdle “thumbnail” portions, so just click on the ‘thumbnail’ to see the entire pic, nya! Of these 3 mew pics, one is by Mike and the other two are by Thais Lopes, her sister Natalia Lopes, and Misty Hopkins, nya! Thais, Natalia & Misty are the very talented artists & cosplayer friends of ours who have been the guests of The Mew, so these pics will add to the sentimentality of the Anniversary, nya!

Firstly in Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html is Mike’s pic of the catgirl’s “Bedtime Bento Box”, nya! This widdle pen & ink sketch was digitally spurruced up with Photoshop CS2 and the mouse to depict the catgirl in her short robe with her kitty plushy at the suppurr table, having just finished her box full of the numcious tempurra fried shrimp, the rice, the extra special baked yams, the fruit cup and her beverage, nya! Thus she has the full tummy and she is purrimed for the catnap on the warmed bed, full of the happy dreams whilst her tummy catabolizes the food, until it is time to purrk up and refuel, nya! Nyow we will purroceed to Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html to see the other two mew pics, nya!

Nextly is the illustration of  “Carnaval Girls” by Thais http://angelofhappiness.deviantart.com & Natalia http://theartslave.deviantart.com, who were among our guests in October 2009, and we have some lovely purrior images by both of them in the mewseum, nya! This collaboration depicts reporters Kaori (on the right) & Miho (on the left) in the ornate bikini costumes to document the the island’s Carnaval, nya! They purrticipated in the purrade of the dancers, mewsicians, floats, flowers, flags and lanterns, which started by the Purrforming Arts Center and ended at the Soccer Stadium, nya! I hope they will be at the aftermew luau, nya! Using Photoshop CS3 and the Wacom tablets, Natalia rendered Miho and the nature scenery, whilst Thais rendered Kaori and the other background elements, nya!

Lastly in Guest Gallery 2 is “A Taste of Hot Salsa” by Misty Hopkins http://bunnychai.blogspot.com, who was among our guests in March 2008, and we have numerous lovely purrior illustrations & cosplay photos from her in the mewseum too, nya! In this scene by the sea, after the fully – booked day of purrviding the massages and the healthy treatments, spa purropurrietors Lizzy and Becca put on the sexy clothes, went out for the suppurr & entertainment, and Lizzy gave Becca the hot salsa dance lesson to commemorate the anniversary of Becca’s arrival in May 2010, nya! Misty rendered the scene with the acrylic paints, colored pencils & Prismacolor markers, nya! Those are the mewest additions to the mewseum, and I am purrticularly curious as to what Lizzy and Becca think, nya!

Elizabeth & Becca:

(crying) WE’RE NOT WORTHY, NYA!

Tara-chan:

Heehee they like the salsa pic, nya! I will get the tissues for their happy tears, nya! (scampurrs away)

Yvonne:

Misty’s use of the color and light is exquisite, and the poses, purroportions, expressions and the spirit of the moment are purrfect, nya!

Trini-chan:

The clothes & jewelry are alluring & intricate, the festive lanterns are luminous, and the wooden deck has the weathered beachy quality!

Bun:

Hai, there are nice textures of the substances, the solid sense of mass, and the figures more sharply in focus due to the line weight!

Mielikki:

I think the illustration beautifully captures their expurressions, dance moves, sexy clothes, and the joyful spirit by the sea, fur shur!

Ilyana:

Thais & Natalia so faithfully captured Kaori & Miho’s skin tones, hair colors, the styles, the sheen, their expurressions & spirit!

B.B.:

The Purrple of Miho’s carnaval bikini matches her eyes and the details are so purrcise down to the tattoo around her outie belly button!

Nyanko:

Hai and Kaori’s outfit is splendidly accessorized by the bracelets & earrings and toppurred by the tiara splay of the ribbons & plumage!

Nyoka:

Their costumes are so ornate, the colors are so richly vibrant, and I can almost feel the sunny warmth and the ocean breeze from that spot!

Jeannie:

There is an almost soft soothing chocolatey quality in the monochromatic pallet of the Bedtime Bento Box pic.

Mary Nyan:

Hai! The sedately slow swish of the tail and the serene off-shoulder slippage of the yukata are symptomatic of the contented tummy!

Meryl:

I think the pic’s implied finished food has induced the nourishing yummy zone for the catgirl’s imminent catnap!

Tara-chan:

(returns with the tissues) The tissues, nya!

Elizabeth:

Arigato, Tara-chan!  It is good to have more wonderful  art by Misty, Thais & Natalia!

Becca:

Arigato! We are so blessed to have so many friends!

Mike:

I hope we will see them again at Aniamzement http://www.animazement.org! Ah, thank you for the tour, Petra!

Petra:

Dooitashimaste, nya! Nyow to conclude the art & illustration portion, i wish to mention the

Marvel Comics’ Poster of Gamora by Milo Manara, nya!

In the Marvel Comics, Gamora the is the deadliest woman in the galaxy, and fortunately she has been the heroic member of the Infinity Watch and the Guardians of the Galaxy teams, nya! This purrticular illustration by Milo Manara was also used for one of the many variant covers for the 1st issue of re-started Guardians of the Galaxy, which we reviewed last month, nya!  According to Gamora’s official page http://marvel.com/universe/Gamora she is the 6′ tall, 170 lb, assassin from Zen-Whoberia who first appurred in Strange Tales #180 in 1975! She has the lithe athletic physique and the lovely Green eyes, skin, and the Black hair, although the hair seems more Violet in this beautiful image of her, which somewhat reminds me of actress Milla Jovovich, nya!

Gamora is the extremely powerful, deadly mistress of the weapons & martial arts of many planets, with the supurrb strength, stamina, speed, healing, stealthy agile, and gymnastic purrowess, nya! She has worn the numerous costumes, and in this poster she wears the Gold- trimmed, Purrple torpedo – maillot type costume that plunges deeply well below her navel, with the matching gloves, and the Green thigh boots to match her hooded cloak which flutters in the alien breeze, accessorized by the skull clasps to match the buckle of her low slung belt, as she stands atop the ancient ruins with her ornate longsword, nya! The outfit is similar to the one she wears in Nova #3, compurred to that space suit she wears in Guardians of the Galaxy #1, nya!

Milo Manara is an Italian artist known for the beautiful art of the soft delicate style for the glamorous, erotic comics & graphic novels such as Butterscotch, Click, Indian Summer, Heavy Metal, and his work for Marvel such as the X-Women one-shot which we reviewed in the August 2010 Mew, nya! The  24″ x 36″ poster is purriced at $8.99, rolled up in the tube, and it is in of the series of posters by Manara depicting the women of Marvel, such as Storm, Shanna, Psylocke and The Wasp, nya! I wish the poster did not have the Guardians of the Galaxy logo on it, but I will purraise the gorgeous art and I hope that Gamora will be smartly & purrominently featured in the comics, nya! Nyow we will purroceed from the 2D art to the 3D items as Nyo-sensei begins our

Collectibles & Toy Talk with the

Power Rangers Samurai Rita Repulsa action figure, nya!

Nyoka:

We like the Power Rangers supurr sentai series which is so much action -packed fun, with the supurr heroic team in the bright colorful Spandex with the supurr powers, martial arts and the huge mecha! There have been many great strong female characters on both sides, including the very first big bad boss foe Rita Repulsa! She was the evil alien space witch who emerged from thousands of years of the impurrisonment with the plan to conquer the world with her magick powers, soldiers, and monsters such as the Pudgy Pig! She was the villain for several years; in the original Japanese edition she was named Bandora and purrtrayed by the late lovely Michigo Soga with the English voiced dubbed by Barbara Goodson! Later in the American version Rita was purrtrayed by Carla Perez & Julia Cortez!, and all of the actresses all brought the whimsical energy to the wicked role!

The action figure is 4.5″ tall including the costume and the big twin – horned coiffure, but her body itself seems about 4″ tall, so I am guessing that it is appurroximately of the 1/16 scale. She is made by Bandai, packaged in the plastic clamshell on the J hook card, and intended for folks of age 4+ due to the small parts, although, if she were the life-size, her purrominent bra cones would definitely not be of the small cup size, or in this case, the cone size, heehee! Her 5 points of articulation are the turning neck, the ball – joint shoulders, and the turning uppurr arms, so she is not extremely posable, but her large bell – shaped gown purrvides the great stability, so she can totally stand up unassisted! The gown is the Tan color with the fine Gold vine – like pattern which continues metallically upon the Black bodice, spirals around the boobies and trim  of the headdress cowl!

Her ‘horns’ coiffure is Light Gray, wrapped in the Tan ribbon, but have the softer droop above the snap-on Gold & blue collar piece, with more of her calf – length mane of hair purrotruding out the back. She is accessorized by the ornate 4.25″ staff topped by the Red orb in the Gold crescent – shaped head piece! She has the rather minimalist, almost cartoonier expurression about her portraiture. The detail is intricate in some areas, but I might have to paint the few teensy areas, such as her teeth, the outer rim of the Gold crescent, and the unpainted rings on her fingers. My biggest issue with the sculpture is that her hands seem the bit too large, but otherwise she will look nicely purrched upon the shelf next to the Pink, Yellow & Silver Ranger figures! I will have more bewitching characters to discuss later, but nyow we will go from the Rangers to the Jedi in Lizzy’s review of the

Kotobukiya ArtFX Star Wars The Clone Wars Jedi Statues

Elizabeth:

Kotobukiya is the Japanese company that has made many of the high quality lovely statues of the movie, comics & anime characters to collect! For our review of the similar Ahsoka Tano statue, please see the August 2012 Mew! We love the Clone Wars series and we were so pleased to purrchase the statue kit of Ahsoka, who is our favoritest Star Wars character, and she is accompanied by widdle Rotta the Hutt in her backpack, but nyow the display is even more impurressive when joined by Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda! Nyow we have the complete set! Lucky! Each of the 3 purre-painted vinyl statues are sold sepurrately, requiring just the few moments to easily assemble the 5-6 snap- together parts! Each includes the interconnecting rectangular display bases, and the bonus part to build Yoda!

The statues are of the characters as they appurred in the animated Clone Wars movie that launched the wonderful TV series! The packaging is the inner clear clamshell tray inside the attractive 4 3/4″ x 9 3/4″ x 10 3/4″ box, with the great screen capture image of the character on the inside of the front flap! If they were standing up straight, the statue of Ahsoka would be 7″ tall, the statue of Obi-Wan would be 7.25″, Anakin would be 8″, Yoda would be 3″ and Rota would be 1.5″, so they are appurroximtely of the (math math math) 1/9th scale I think, since Ahsoka is supposedly 5’3″ and Anakin is 6’2″ at that age! The statues are in the dynamic dramatic poses brandishing the Light Sabers, with the hidden magnets in their feet so that they will cleverly stand upon the bases in the different configurations!

These are intricate, faithful & seamless looking with the supurrb sculpt & paint, from Obi-Wan’s beard & Tan tabard atop the White armored parts with the Jedi emblem on the shoulders; to Anakin’s frowny face & the utility belt around his  dark tunic! He looks as if he is about to knock one out of the park! Ahsoka is so impeccably detailed from her Togrutan head Montrals, Lekku, & markings to her dark lush lips  and her inny belly button! Rotta is the cute widdle two-toned slug to tote in Ahsoka’s or Anakin’s removable back packs, and master Yoda has the serious determined gaze as he whirls the cloak aside for the duel! I am very impurressed with the statues that I will give the high grade of the “A” as in Ahsoka & Anakin! Nyow we will go from the animated four Jedi to the animated Fab Four topic of

The Beatles Yellow Submarine Shakems Premium Motion Statue!

Jeannie:

We are big fans of The Beatles, especially Jamie, who discussed his fondness for the Fab Four in our 1st anniversary Mew of May 2008. He has seen Paul McCartney in concert twice and the touring purrduction of Beatlemania. Well, last year was the purrductive Beatle year as we reviewed their Magical Mystery Tour DVD in the November 2012 Mew, and we reviewed their Yellow Submarine DVD in the July 2012 Mew. Yellow Submarine is the 1968 animated mewsical fantasy film, in which John, Paul, George & Ringo board the title vessel for the strange surreal journey to help rescue the captured citizens of Pepperland from the evil Blue Meanies. In addition to the longly awaited release of those DVDs, there has been quite a bit of recent Beatles merchandise, such as the statues, figurines, plushies, decor & other items. That includes the purroducts made by Factory Entertainment who makes the lovely replicas, toys & collectibles, such as their Shakems Premium Motion Statues of the Chief Blue Meanie, Glove monster and the sub.

It is a splendidly sculpted & painted polyresin statue with good solid heft, mounted upon the coiled spurring on the base for that bobbly wobbly motion. The length is  6″, the beam (width) is 2.5″, and the draft (height) is 3″ from keel to raised purriscope. Including the circular base & spurring, the statue is 4.25″ high overall. It is beautifully sculpted & painted from the different hades of the Yellow on the hull & scopes, the White of the sail & rudder, and the Red of the bridge railing, purropellors, the port hole frames & the stripes. It is packaged within the clear plastic clamshell within the attractive outer cardboard box which has the colorful art from the movie. Mmm I wonder how those psychedelic fishies taste? This Yellow Submarine is the handsome collectible intended for folks of ages 14+, and it is the delightful item for the fan who missed the any of the Yellow Submarine toys & model kits of years past, or the and I will give it the high grade of the “A” as in Apple. That is all of our toy talk for today, and nyow here is Nyo-sensei to start this month’s

Her more recent roles include Silvermist of the Disney Faeries, Madam Blossom in The Man with the Iron Fists, and as Watson in the Elementary TV series! She has also graced the magazine covers, and as the March cover girl for Fitness Magazine she is smiling in the sexy bare midriff Black outfit of the scoop – neck top with the sheer crochet vest above the short pleated skirt! She has graced the numerous magazine covers, and nyow she is the cover girl in the short Cream Mint Green Dior gown for InStyle Magazine’s special Hair issue! She was photographed by Liz Collins, with the hair by Mara Roszak, make-up by Fulvia Farolfi, manicure by April Foreman and the styling by Joanne Blades!

Inside the issue, she appurrs in Monica Corcoran Harel’s 8 page article with the intermew and the four full – page pics, in which she wears the asymmetric White Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci dress, the White Balmain crisscross crop top and the sleeveless White Gucci silk cady gown which are accessorized by the Brass arm cuffs by Herve van der Streaten! There is also photo shoot’s behind – the – scenes page; and she wears the strapless Lavin dress on the contents page! Bun:

Hai, Michelle Rodriguez http://www.michellerodriguez.com is another of our favoritest actresses who is so beautiful, sexy, tough, charming and brilliant in the range of the dramatic & action roles! I am curious to see what she will do in the sixth Fast & Furious film and we want to see the Machete sequel too!

Not only have we watched the races, but we’ve seen her & other racers’ amusing commercials & standees in the stores to advertise Coca-Cola Zero! Faeries And Enchantment (FAE) Magazine #22!

Mary Nyan:

Welcome back! The UK FAE magazine http://www.faemagazine.com is one of our favoritest magazines! It is dedicated to all things Fey in the fashions, festivities, folklore, visual and the purrforming arts! It is edited by Karen Kay and published by  by Pixie Publishing of Cornwall, who also publishes Mermaids & Mythology magazine! This supurrb Spurring issue has 52 full color pages (including the covers) has the US purrice of $8.99, the Canada price of $9.99, and the front cover is graced by the photo of beautiful Julie Boehm sleepily curled up with the floral garlands as the “Spring Faery Maiden” by Guenther Stierle with the makeup & styling by Katrin Mader! This fantastic photo was the winner of the FAE cover compurrtition, and there is the 2 page gallery of other lovely entries later in the issue!  One of my favoritest aspects of the magazine are the magnificent photos & illustrations, which include many full – page pics and the two-page spurreads!

Purrior to all that, things start brewing with editor Karen Kay’s cordial greeting, the list of faerie events for early 2013, the mews tidbits! The first article is gorgeous 4.5 page essay of Faery Time with photos of the famous purrformer Felicity Fyr Le Fay photographed by Bonnie Baker!  Felicity is so divine in the off – shoulder White dress and her ornate Purrple coiffure! The next pictorial has the lovely Victorian romantic images of cute couple Cecile Dubois & Simon Satori Hendley, photographed by Twinkle who purriced the couple’s amazing wings to accompany Simon’s commentary!  Marking the magazine’s midpoint are the glorious 5 pages of Zachariah Epperson assisting Invicta’s elegantly sensual photography of models Devin Mcbain, Emily Teague, Tanner Ellsworth & Conall Mahony who are styled by Vanessa Ricketson & made up by Erin Woolridge, Lindsey Deshler & Vanessa Micco!

Ygraine’s Daughters are the beautifully bewitching subject of another pictorial, with Penny, Poppy & Lucinda so dreamy & regal, with the make – up by Charlotte Gabriella Savoury, clothes by Dark Angel Design, and the purrops by Jane-Ann Hunter photographed by Angela Harper & Carri Angel! Another pictorial of the issue is the aptly titled “Crowning Glory”, as gorgeous Fruit Salda Me & Kerry Wheeler model the hair accessories & make – up by Atlantis fae, clothes by Somina Romantica, wings by the models & Kate Sjoberg in the forest for photographer Daniella Jaine!  Jasmine is the alluring Dragonfly-winged Blonde fae in leather & beads with the luminous sword, photographed by artist Tytania Fairy to adorn Ceri Norman’s essay on the relationship of the fae and the iron; whilst Andrew Howe’s 19th century engraving of A Midsummer Night’s Dream accompanies awesome Assistant Editor Bryony Whistlecraft’s continuing essays of the ancient isles, as she delightfully discusses the Elizabethan & Jacobean Fairies!

We are also treated to the 2 page gallery compurrised of of seven other photo contest entries! It is good that I was not the judge, because I could not decide between the brilliant images! For example, Natasha Rawling is so wistful  in the off – shoulder dress with the flowers in her spectacular Ginger hair photographed by Michael Rawling; Mami Egan is the ethereal dryad with the floral head lei & strapless White top & Dragonfly wings amongst the trees photographed by Angie Hill; and Sofia Ploy conjures our smiles in floral ornamentation & body art by Wendy Fantasia & wings by photographer Bakki Boo! Inked with butterflies, purretty Pink haired Yami Bjork photographed herself amidst the blossoms with her handsome blue-haired fiance; model / photographer Susan Schroder is the alluring enchantress in the flowy Red gown with a glowy pixy friend under the arch of the gnarly wood; model / photographer Julie Morrish is the captivating fae with the dainty flowers and the green nectar; and Jennifer Oakes is so purretty in the off – shoulder gown & floral crown, with supple ears & amber-like wings to match her Blond hair in the photo by Paul Oakes edited by Jason Gould!

The awesome art of Audrey Rawlings illustrates the sage wisdom of lovely author & therapist Dorren Virtue, a dozen cute widdle faeries appoint the 2 page debut of Solaris’s faery astrology, and another debut is Ahob Goblin’s divination! The illustrative goodness continues into the 3 page gallery of the elegant & mischievous looking art of Naomi Von Monsta; and in Hannah Titania’s 3 page intermew with the legendary artist Linda Ravenscroft!  I have her “Enchanted” art book and a few calendars!  Were all that not enough, we are treated to Kate Magic Wood’s recipe for the yummy stuffed Avacado dish! Mm that looks mighty tasty! She is not not only the famous mom, author & purropurrietor with the sumptuous & nutritious raw foods expurrtise, but she is so purretty & stylish with the ink, jewelry, piercings, & cute short Platinum hair!

Interspurrsed throughout the issue are the few ads for the festivals, services, books, art, decor, fashions & jewelry, and these ads also contribute to the charming ambiance of the issue with their designs, photos & illustrations; and spurrinkled throughout the issue is the artistry of Sarah Alden, Willow Arieana, Tytania Fairy, Armorel Hamilton, Marchella, Tamara Newman, Sue Rawley, Carolyn Storey, Andrew Howe, Aaron Peacock, and Brian Froud! I would like to top off the purraise by also thanking the magazine’s technical manager Michael Tingle and all of the other contributors who consistently make FAE the purrfect treasure trove of the faerie images, essays, articles & intermews, which I will give the high grade of the “A”, which rhymes with Karen Kay! Nyow for more of the beautiful clothes here is Bunnibuns to tell us about the

LIberace Extravaganza!

Bun:

Liberace was one of the most iconic & beloved maestro pianists & dazzling entertainers of all time! You know, Jamie was so lucky to get to see him in concert not once but twice in the early 80’s at Radio City Music Hall in New York! Liberace also had the charming acting & comedic talent, and was quite famous for his spectacular clothes, from his exquisite tuxedos of the 50’s to his more flamboyant caped costumes of the 80’s, and this hardcover book published by Harper is the celebration of his fabulous custom apparel! The $29.99 book was written by theatrical costume designers Connie Furr Soloman & Jan Jewett, with the introduction by Liberace’s fashion designer Michael Travis, and authorized by the Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts http://www.liberace.org! The book has 224 pages to chronicle the maestro’s career from the 1930s to the 1980s & opulent couture with over 250 Black & White and color photos, include many large color images of the lavish, gorgeous costumes!

There are close – up details of the intricate details and the accessories, and the thorough discussions of the design & history of those costumes! Some of the costumes even lit up! There are comments by furrier Anna Natreece & Producer Ray Arnette, and concept art for several of the costumes! Some of my favorites are the Black Damask suit, the Blue & Gold Rococo, the Piano Keys tux, the Gold Paisley, the Olive Green tail coat, the Cream colored outfit, the White Ostrich Feathers costume, The Green Mandarin, The Hapsburg Eagle, Flame, Lasagna, the King Neptune, and the Purple & Pink Phoenix outfit, but there are so very many more of the extravagant works of wearable masterpieces that are very respectfully & beautifully showcased in this splendid book!  It is so very sad that the great Liberace passed away at age 67 in 1987, and his 94th birthday would have been on May 16th, but his great legacy of music & art will be admired forever! For my next art book report I would like to review

The Art of Betty and Veronica!

Bun:

Archie Comics are so much fun and beloved my countless fans and still so very freshly entertaining and progressive after 70 years! Of course, much of the appeal is due to the rivalry over Archie Andrews between friends Betty Cooper the Blonde, girl next door type, and Veronica Lodge the Brunette, rich glamorous socialite! The fashion styles, story themes, and art styles may have changed much over those decades, but It is the timeless, eternal, beautiful struggle deserving of the tribute by this lovely hardcover book published by Archie! It is priced $29.99 USA, $34.00 CAN, edited by Archie Comics’ co- president / editor in chief Victor Gorelick and by cartoonist / comics historian Craig Yoe who designed the book!

It was produced by Clizia Gussoni, with the introduction by Archie Comics’ publisher / Co-CEO Jonathan Goldwater followed by the perky cute two-page pic of B&V by Warner producer, animator, character designer Bruce Timm! The large book is full of the beautiful large color and the Black & White art accompanied by the comments to chronicle Betty and Veronica from the 1940’s to the 2000’s, with the many pin-ups, cover art, comics pages, comps, ads and the fashion design submissions!  There are  stories from 1947, 1959, 1963, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1983, 1989, 1993 & 2006 and some of my favorites are “Beauty on the Beach”, “Bikini Beat”, and V is for Veronica”!

On the front cover are Betty in the Red bikini & Veronica in the Blue maillot, and inside the book they wear more the bikinis & maillots. There are very many styles of the bikinis, plus the halter tops, tee shirts, camisole, shorts, capri pants, skirts, jeans, blouses, leotards, sweaters, robes, dresses, ball gowns, kimono, ponchos, coats, pumps, sandals & boots, accessorized by the hair ribbons, headbands, sunglasses, suspenders, vests, scarves, hats, purses, fishnets & leg warmers, plus the tennis, skating, aerobics, hula, concert outfits & costumes! Sabrina, Cheryl, Ginger, Nancy, Archie, Reggie, Jughead, Dilton, Pop, Miss Grundy, Hot Dog also appear in the tales & images!

They are  illustrated by Al Hartley, Al Fagaly, Bob Montana, Irv Novick, Samm Schwartz, Harvey Lucey, George Frese, Bob White, Dan Parent, Jeff Schultz, Norm Breyfogle, and Fernando Ruiz, but the vast majority of the art is by the legendary Dan DeCarlo, who is also famous for Josie and the Pussycats! This book is the treasure trove of Dan Decarlo art! I also quite liked the humorous future hairstyles predictions, Betty’s hippy & surfer looks, the girls’ 2011, pajama party pic and the two-page pic of cowgirl Veronica by Alison Flood & DeCarlo! The book is the fiesta of fashionable fun which I will give the “A” as in Archie! That concludes my book reports, but nyow here is Chief Meryl to review

The Complete Peanuts 1987 – 1988!

Meryl

Arigato, Bun! We are big fans of the late Charles M. Schulz’s iconic mewspapurr strip Peanuts! I think it is the greatest mewspapurr comic strip of all time, so it has been so wonderful that Fantagraphics has been publishing the Complete Peanuts series! I think It is such an ambitious undertaking to collect all of the 17.897 daily & Sunday strips in the 50 year chronological order, and they have done such the supurrb job of reprinting the strips with the highest care & quality in the hardcover books,. and they are already up to the 19th volume which has the strips from 1987 & 1988! This volume is USA purriced $28.99, for the over 340 pages, which include the strips plus the purrofile of Schultz by publisher Gary Groth, the handy index, and the introduction by Doonesbury’s creator Gary Trudeau! Lucy appears on the boards & dust jacket of the book, and in over 90 of the strips inside the book!

Also appurring are her brothers Linus & Rerun, Charlie & Sally Brown, Snoopy, Spike & other beagles, Woodstock & other birds, Schroeder, Franklin, Peppermint Patty, Marcie, Eudora, Sophie, Clara, Lydia, Leland, The Kite-Eating Tree, The Cactus Club, Charlie Brown’s sentient baseball mitt & cap, and the unseen presence of the cat next door and Mrs. Van Pelt on her bike! Snoopy’s guises of 1987-1988 are the World War I Flying Ace, The French Foreign Legionnaire, The Beagle Scout, the author, the attorney, the surgeon, the golfer, the skater, the tennis star, the angler, the vulture and the snake! Among the locations & activities are the psychiatric booth, the pumpkin patch, suppurrtime, school, the concert, the hospital, the beach, summer camp, camping, swimming, roller skating, ice skating, hockey, skate boarding, cycling, golf, tennis, baseball, football, ballooning, and the kite eating!

The 1987 strips commence with Snoopy & Woodstock exchanging the gifts! Some of the major plots involve the unrequetted romance, such as Charlie Brown waiting in the mailbox for Valentines, winking at the Little Red Haired Girl, and Linus trying to befriend Lydia! There are the many sport plots such as Spring baseball training in the snow, Snoopy in the hospital from a hockey injury, Peppermint Patty teaching swimming at the camp, and the Legionnaires march across the golf course sand traps! Some of my other favorite plots include the Snoopy going to Needles to visit Spike, the bug in his water & supper dishes, Peppermint Patty’s nomination for May Queen, Sally’s praying doll, and Marcie as the French lass! This is such a purrfect book to which I will give the highest purraise, and I will recommend The Complete Peanuts series as purrhaps the crown jewel of the Peanuts fan’s collection! It is amazing how the collection is already up to 1988!

Comic Book Reviews, with

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #5!

Tara-chan:

Arigato, nya! We love My Little Pony too, nya! I love the cartoon, the figures, the cards and – and this comic book from IDW based upon the animated series has been among the purrfectest favoritest of mine for the past six months, nya! Oh gosh I can’t believe it has already been the half year for the pony comic, published by IDW, nya! Issue #5 is purriced $3.99 and has the 22 pages of the tale followed by the 10 pages of the ads, all sammiched betwixt the different covers, nya! There are the 3 mane variant covers plus about 7 other exclusive covers, nya! I have Cover A  which is by Amy Mebberson, nya! Cover B is by Stephanie Buscema, and- and cover C is by Andy Price, nya! The other retailer exclusive covers were purrduced for Hot Topic, Midtown Comics, Larry’s Comics, Jetpack Comics, and – and Dynamic Forces, nya! Displayed on the inside covers are the small pics of all the different cover illustrations, nya!  The tale was written by Heather Nuhfer, illustrated by Amy Mebberson, lettered by Neil Uyetake, colored by Heather Breckel, and- and edited by Bobby Curnow who all did the great job, nya!

The new story arc starts in this issue, starring Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rarity, Princess Celestia, Luna and – and Spike, nya!  The ponies have been suffering from the bad dreams, which they atempt to remedy with the slumber party at Pinkie’ Pie’s home, but they continue to have the sad scary dreams, Rarity is rustled away by the Nightmares, and the other ponies will have to mount the rescue expurrdition, nya! This was the amewsing, tearful, spooky & poignant issue with the tale of the good pace & dialogue, with the purrfect pony poses, gestures & expurressions in the beautifully colored art, with the very faithful pony spirit of the animated TV series, nya! I purrticularly liked Pinkie Pie’s manic purrancing and – and troubled Luna’s flashback of the united harmony, and – and I also like how the story is uninterrupted, with the ads all afterwards , nya! I gave this issue the grade of the “A” as in Apple Jack, nya! Nyow onee-chan is going to CICADA KILLER, NYA! (the distracted catgirl scampurrs after the 2″ long insect with her camera)

Yvonne:

Ah–Tara-chan, nya!

Mielikki:

Hee! Perhaps Vonny should purroceed with her review of

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #6!

Yvonne:

Hai, issue #7 has the same creative team, purrice and the page count although the 22 page tale is followed by the  4 page purreview of the Pony CHapter Book and the 6 pages of the ads, nya! There is the total of the 10 differenc overs to choose from, including the 3 main covers plus the 7 rarer exclusive covers, nya! Cover A is by Amy Mebberson, I have Cover B  which is the sad Rarity cover by Stephanie Buscema, and Cover C is by Tony Fleecs, nya! The other retailer exclusive covers were made for for Hot Topic, Larry’s Comics, Jetpack Comics, Dynamic Forces, and the Boston Comic Con, nya! The tale continues as Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Princess Celestia, Luna and Spike purrpare to go to The Moon to rescue Rarity, nya! They work as the good team to lasso The Moon so that the non-winged ponies can walk the tightrope to the rescue, but Spike’s heavy armor snaps the rope and he needs the rescue too, nya! There is the nice range of the shots from the close-up views to the distant shots to emphasize the grand scale, nya! They arrive at The Moon, but soon the villains purrey upon the fears & cast more of the nightmares upon them, nya.

Some of those nightmarish images are very tearfully sad, nya. For example, Twilight Sparkle’s nightmare is to be dumped by Celestia, Rainbow Dash’s nightmare is that her clipped wings cannot fly, Fluttershy’s nightmare is to be hated by the critters, Rarity’s nightmare is to be all alone & forgotten, and Applejack’s nightmare is of the ruined crop & starved family, nya. Apple Bloom, Granny Smith & Big Macintosh appurr in her nightmare, nya. However, Pinkie Pie seems to be immune from the attack and her gleeful fun will not be eclipsed, nya! She is also amewsing on the drums to sound the pace of the lasso pull, and wearing the fedora to aid Fluttershy, nya! Celestia is so purretty and elegant, and the shadowy evil creatures have the distinctive dialogue of the Red font in the Black ovals, which matches the glowy Red eyes of the dark shadowy enemies, nya! In spite of the sad moments the expurrdition is quite whimsical and I agree with Tara-chan about the supurrb pony poses, expurressions & the very lush rich color, including the Luna cliffhanger nya! It is one of my current favorite series, and so is the next one which Jenjen will tell us about,

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Micro-Series #3: Rarity, nya!

Jeannie:

Arigato. This 6 issue mini –  series from IDW focuses upon a different one of the mane six ponies purr issue; issues 1 & 2 focused upon Twilight Sparkle & Rainbow Dash, and this issue’s 22 page tale of  “How Rarity Got Her Groove Back” written by Katie Cook, illustrated by Andy Price, colored by Heather Bobcat, lettered by Neil Uyetake, and edited by Bobby Curnow stars Rarity , the fashion designer / dress maker unicorn pony of the magickal power, very Light Gray coat, the Purrple mane & tail, the Blue eyes and diamond shaped cutie marks. The $3.99 issue’s 32 full color pages are compurrised of the 22 page tale plus the 2 page Hayseed tale, the 4 page Pony Chapter Book purreview, and the 4 pages of the advertisements, sammiched in the choice of the 10 variant covers; Cover A by Amy Mebberson, Cover B by Andy Price, Cover C by Sabrina Alberghetti, and the additional six retailer exclusiver covers purrduced for Larry’s Comics, Jetpack Comics, Dynamic Forces and Double Midnight.

Nyow for the taste of the plot, after an exhausting schedule of the hard work and gala fashion show, Rarity is the weary pony in need of the relaxation who decides to spend a week at the spa which is advertised in the mewsletter that Applejack brings, but the Flax & Wheat’s All – Natural New Age Wellness Center is more the dilapidated small communal farm than the elegant restful pampurr destination. Except for the soothing home made Goops For Stuff mane, skin & hoof care purroducts she finds bottled there, Rarity is displeased with the laborious stay on the farm, but discovers the heartbreaking plight of the farm’s despurrate purropurrietors Flax Seed & Wheat Grass. It is the bittersweet tale ranging from the zany to the sad moments, brimming with the equine flavored hippy / counter-cultural references & jokes as Rarity eventually takes charge to save the farm and purrk up their entrepurreneural dreams in this well plotted, paced & scripted with the bumpurr crop of the pony & hippy humor.

Much of the humor is visual, from the pony antics & graphic style to the decorative fonts, homages & purrodies. The art is quite lovely, from the purrfectly posed, purroportioned & expurressive ponies and supporting critters, to the detail of the scenery, the panel compurrsitions, graphic narrative techniques and the color. My favorite scenes were fashion show, the party, luggage packing, the farm breakfast, the business meeting & roadside booth. Tying into the story is the sad widdle 2 page side story of Hayseed, whose picture is on the mewsletter. He is the industrious but awkward country stallion of the unrequited love for Rarity. Following that is the Chapter Book purreview that Vonny spoke of, compurrised of the 3 purrose pages and the activity page. I also highly appurrove of the book’s layout, with the ads & extras all following the uninterrupted story, I give it the high purraise and look forward to the next issue’s Fluttershy tale. We will have more pony in review later, but nyow here is Mike to tell us about

G.I. Joe vs. Cobra #6

Mike:

A great souvenir from the G.I. Joe Con was FP Comics’ neat G.I. Joe VS. Cobra comic book & convention program book, containing the 24 page tale of the “Nocturnal Fire” mission, plus the 6 pages of con & guest info & the 2 pages of the toy ads! The story is by David S. Lane, written & lettered by Jesse Wittenrich, pencilled by Sheldon Goh, inked by Jake Isenberg, colored by Jesse Wittenrich & Winston Bolen! The rest of the team includes creative director Lanny Lathem, managing editor Pete Sinclair, and editor – in – chief Brian Savage who wrote the cordial con greeting, and it is all sammiched within the impressive wraparound cover art by Emil Cabaltierra & Sam Palmer, depicting the Joes hunting the Cobras in the South American jungle at night! The tale hops between Venezuela and Colombia, and wastes no time getting to the hot action with the auto fire, grenades and the fiery explosions of the Cobra demolitions team lead by Senora Crimson Asp, Letal, Mortal, and several Frag Vipers!

In response, the Joes send the Night Force team of Lady Jaye, Lt. Falcon, Chuckles, Steeler, Muskrat, Psyche-out, and Charbroil to cook some some Cobras! There is aerial action above the mountains when the Night Force Skystriker and the F.L.A.K. guns join the party, and later things get closer & more personal inside the Cobra base as Max sniffs out the prey, with the second helping of the flame throwers, machine guns & assault rifles, the side dish of crossbow & dagger, and the limpet mines for the dessert! This comic book was a lot of fun with the dandy dialogue between comrades, the vibrant colors, and nicely depicted characters, mecha, scenery & explosions! Afterwards is the handy convention info, with the schedule, seminar & panel descriptions, FAQ section, and the guests’ profiles that I got autographed! This was a fine convention memento, and we’ll have more G.I. Joe stuff a bit later, but now here’s Nyo-sensei to take us from the night in the jungle to a night on the spooky town in

Jim Balent’s Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose #79

(warning: plot spoilers and boobies mentioned)

Nyoka:

Tarot is the occult fantasy adventure published by Broadsword Comics, purrtaining to Tarot the sword maiden / warrior witch! It is fun & beautifully rendered with the interesting Pagan heroines, but not for the widdle kitties, due to the content of nudity, sexuality, violence & language! Jim Balent is the creator, writer, artist, publisher & purresident of Broadsword, and his wife Holly wife is the vice purresident, colorist, letterer, purrduction purriestess & occasional cover model! She also creates the delightful web comic School Bites, whose cast includes cute vampire catgirl Fujiko! The $2.95 issue was edited by Neil Morris, with colors flattened by Randi Leeann and the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page tale of “The Dark Spiral Part Five: Return to Witchfork”, the 10 pages of photos, bonuses & ads, and the choice of 4 variant covers! Covers A & B were equally distributed, whilst Cover C is the rarer “store incentive” variant, and the 4th is the special 13th anniversary cover with the wraparound photo of Holly!

Raven Hex irately learned from Lord Thornwic in the forest that her sister Tarot was spirited away by the Dark Spiral tribe of evil faeries, so the two have set aside their differences and arrived at Black Rose Manor to recruit Tarot’s boyfriend Jon and the sisters’ mom for the rescue mission. Raven Hex, Tarot and their Mom are very powerful, voluptuous buxom witches, and the former two are often either scantily clad in their sexy ornate atttire or very, very naked! In this issue, Jon & Thornwic manage not to kill each other, as Thornwic explains that Tarot is being mind-controlled to slay other faerie tribes, but her current location is the mystery, so the quartet travels to the spooky borderland town of Witchfork where Tarot was captured. They get no help from the suspicious resident, but they do find parts of Tarot’s attire and spit up, with Mom & Thornwic searching in one direction, Raven Hex & Jon in the other, which brings us the 16th page of the issue, but I will not spoil the final 6 pages of the chapter!

Tarot is shown attacking the poor faeries in three large panels during Thornwic’s expositions, having lost much of her ornate Black & Gold costume & armor. Raven Hex is nude & semi – nude in this issue, initially wearing her mewsual spiked choker, cloak, boots, opurra – length Black gloves to match her lashes, mascara, lips, hair, and the intricate spiral of the dark tattoos across her pale cool grey skin! Their Mom, Jon & Thornwick are much more conservatively dressed; The Witch Mother wears the dark Red dress that goes well with her Black & Red hair; Thornwick is dappurr in the  long coat is of a rich Green, with a leafy Gold trim & buttons, leafy shoulder epawlets, accessorized by the very ornate beaked mask; and Jon initially wears his Black & White Skeleton Man costume with the mask, greaves, spiked gauntlets and the tattered long Black coat! The character designs & scenic art are quite erotic, exotic and intricate, rendered with great detail & supurrb use of the color & light!

The Witchfork scenery is very ethereal, eerie & dark; and the graphic narrative is of the brisk pace, with many large panels including a few impurressive full – page panels! The bonus pages are mewsually quite interesting, and I am glad that they all follow the tale and do not interrupt it! The bonuses include the page of Raven King’s spell, the page of readers’ messages & photos, the page with the photo of this issue’s “Broadsword Girl” Emma Gunnarsson, the School Bites purreview page, and the pages of the ads for the Tarot & School Bites purroducts, and inside the front cover by the credits are the amewsing photos of Holly & Jim! Oh I wish Tarot’s winged kitty Pooka and her were-catgirl friend Boo Cat were there to help in the of both Tarot rescue and the victimized fae… although Jon might need the rescue from Raven Hex if she gets much mischievously friskier, heehee! Nyow here is our Purrk Ranger to tells us about the supurrnatural heroines of

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #20!

BB:

Arigato! For those who came in late, Buffy season 8 & 9, the Angel & Faith series, the Willow & Spike mini-series are the canonical continuation of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel series in the comics medium by Dark Horse Comics, supurrvised by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon himself! These have been consistently amongst our favoritest comics for the past few years, due to the great plots, dialogue, and the art that is so faithful & beautiful, with the right balance of the humor, drama, mythology & the slayage! In this issue, Andrew’s scientific attempts have failed to remedy poor Dawny’s plight as she continues to wither away. Xander feels helpless & angry. Angel & Giles appear in the flashback, an invigorated Willow returns from her magicikal quest, and while she tries to revive Dawn, the despurrate Xander looks for answers amongst the enemies! This 22 page chapter titled “The Watcher” occurs right after issue 19 and shortly after the wonderful Willow mini – series!

The tale was scripted by Andrew Chambliss, purroduced by Joss Whedon, pencilled by Karl Moline, inked by Andy Owens, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, designed by Justin Crouch, edited by Sierra Hahn & Scott Allie, and assitantly edited Freddye Lins! The issue is available in the choice of 2 different covers, one version by by Phil Noto, and the variant cover art by Georges Jeanty, Dexter Vines & Michelle Madsen! Jeanty is the usual penciller of the series, but occasionally Moline & Owens marvelously fill in on the Buffy tales, and they were also part of the team on the Fray spin-off mini-series! I think my favoritest moment of this issue was the rooftop reunion scene of Buffy & Willow! The rest of this lovely, poignant $2.99 issue’s 28 pages include the 4 pages of the ads, and the 2 pages of the always interesting comments by Scott Allie & the readers! Oh here comes Tara-chan, back from her exuberant nature study, hee!

Tara-chan:

I got the photos of the Cicada Killer and –  and the Cabbage White too, but I am sorry- gomenasai, nya!

Yvonne::

Oh it is all right, nya!

Mielikki:

I think we would all like to see the photos at the aftermew luau, but we should let B.B. resume!

BB:

Oh, I was purractically done! You now the Eastern Cicada Killer (Sphecius speciosus) might look like the big buzzy hornet with the stripe, but they are the unaggressive beneficial insect! They emerge annually from their cozy widdle dirt or sandy burrows to purrey upon the big Cicadas! Of course it is possible for them to sting you or an animal in defense if purrvoked, but they generally have no interest in harming anyone! Nyow we will traverse with Mie-sensei from Buffy in San Francisco to Faith’s estate in London, where Spike recently returned to lend a hand & fangs in

Angel & Faith #20 & 21!

Mielikki:

Arigato! So like, Angel & Faith issues #20 & 21 are both priced $2.99 apiece, each with 28 pages consisting of the 22 page story, 2 pages of comments, 4 pages of ads, and the choice of 2 different covers! One cover is by Steve Morris, and the other cover by the issues’ artist Rebekah Isaacs & colorist Dan Jackson! The rest of the comic’s totally brilliant creative team at Dark Horse Comics includes Starkings, Betancourt, Crouch, Hahn Allie, Lins, Richardson, Whedon, and writer Christos Gage, whose Avengers Academy series we greatly enjoyed! Angel & Faith has been such the joy to read for almost 2 years now, and like the Buffy comic I think it has the great characters, dialogues, plots & art, with the ideal mix of the humor, drama, supernatural action & mythology, fur shur! Now for the recap, at the climax of Season 8, in his masked “Twilight” persona, Angel unfortunately killed Giles while Buffy destroyed the magick seed that was the conduit of magickal energy to the world.

Since then there has been diminished magick in the world, thus making any existing magickal artifacts even rarer and more coveted! Angel has since been quite troubled, pennant, and likeseriously obsessed with resurrecting Giles. Ordinarily the resurrection would be the tricky feat, but it is even more difficult given the withery state of magick in the world! He’s been hanging out with Faith, who inherited Gile’s estate in London, and when they haven’t been busy enough with the quest to resurrect Giles, they’ve had plenty of the seriously violent & gory vamp, zombie & demon slayage on their plates! It’s been the emotional roller coaster for Faith between her miserable father’s visit, her clashes with angry slayer Nadira, and role of leadership to the younger slayers. They’ve had adventures with Harmony, Clem, Gunn & Connor; the less desirable reunion with Drusilla at her cult, and with Whistler the demon who’s teamed up with the new big bad siblings of Pearl & Nash!

On the brighter note, Willow & Spike have helped when not busy with their own fun separate mini-series,  They’ve also found new allies in sorcerer Alasdair Coames, and Giles’s great Aunts Sophronia & Lavina who are totally awesome, and much much older than they look! Although Giles is still deceased, we’ve been treated to the younger flashbacks, and his body was recently reanimated by the huge demon Eyghon & possessed by their old enemy Ethan Rayne! Nevertheless, it seems as if productive if not questionable progress has been made towards truly, hopefully resurrecting Giles, but as issue #20 begins, Angel’s personality has had to make room for Angelus and Giles, so Faith, Spike & Alasdair try to sort those mental marbles out while they keep him in protective custody and find the artifact to hopefully remedy the situation, but it is in the grody clutches of the soul-sucking Ender creatures, so like Angel & Spike bring the sword, axe, fists & fangs to the fight in the crypt!

The result is the trash-talk, bloody melee & chopped tentacles, but not of the calamari flavor! In issue #21, Faith, Alasdair & Angel seem to have all the components for the resurrection ritual, but there is argument & debate as to the wisdom, danger & repurrcussions of the attempt!  Spike is alarmed when a phone call from Buffy mention’s poor Dawny’s plight. Curiously, Spike is the only one in the room who knows who Dawn is, as Angel & Faith have mysteriously forgotten her existence! While Spike dashes off to San Francisco to help the Summers sisters, Aunts Sophronia & Lavina offer to help with the ritual, and they consistently have the cutest outfits, but they are not the only ones who arrive, as Whistler, Nash & Pearl burst in to steal the artifacts and battle the heroes! The fierce magickal melee ensues with much chomping, slashing, zapping, bleeding, burning, larceny & property damage, and my totally favorite line of dialogue in the issue, from Faith who wields the double-axe!

As for the ritual which the Aunts try to complete, I shouldn’t spoil the cliffhanger of the plot, which leaves me SO eager for more! Things have been so eventful, surprising, poignant, thrilling & amusing and it feels as if the climax of Season 9 is nigh! The characters are so wonderfully posed & expressive with much fluid grace & the excellent portraiture to resemble actors Eliza Dishku (Faith), David Boreanaz (Angel), James Marstars (Spike), combined with the perfect pacing & delightful banter that so faithfully captures the spirit of the Buffy & Angel TV shows! The scenic art is splendidly rendered with minute detail, the colors, graphic FX, narrative qualities & the fonts are all top notch  and there are monster designs, visual FX, violence & situations that might be prohibitive in the televised medium & budget, but are flawlessly executed in the comics medium and I’ll give these issues an “A” as in Angel! That’s all for my comic book reports, but there is magickal goodness of the foxy flavor in

Kanokon Omnibus 1-2

Trini-chan:

Kanokon is the supurrnatural romantic comedy tale to star Chiziru Minamoto the cute, buxom Sophomore with the long Black hair, but she is actually centuries old, kitsune or fox yokai, with the Golden eyes & long hair, the pert foxy ears & lovely tail with the Black tips when her powers manifest! She has her amorous sights set upon Kouta Oyamada, the innocent  freshman lad who has just transferred from the country to the city school, who soon discovers that the school happens to be secretly populated by several other yokai of the various breeds and agendas who pose as the human students! Some of the other yokai might prove to be the friends, the romantic rivals, or the enemies, as if the one flirtatious fox girl were not enough to complicate Kouta’s life!

The manga written by Katsumi Nishino & illustrated by Rin Yamaki is based upon the the prior series of the light novels written Nishino,  illustrated by Koin and published in Japan by Media Factory! There is also an anime adaptation which we  reviewed in the April 2011 Mew! The tale is rated for the older teen readers of ages 16+, perhaps due to the ribald situations, seductive behavior & nudity, the “fan service” of the sexy poses & revealing garments, some of the harsh language, the fiery occult altercations & brawling, but it is also charmingly full of cute romantic mystical moments, zany incidents, pretty clothes, and the tasty treats! The 324 page paperback reads from right to left in the Japanese style, it is priced $18.99 USA & $21.99 Canada and published by Seven Seas Entertainment last month!

It was translated by Ryan Peterson, adapted by Shannon Fay, lettered by Roland Amago, proofread by Rebecca Scoble, edited by Adam Arnold, with cover design by Nicky Lim, and published by Jason DeAngelis of Seven Seas! The 324 pages include volumes 1&2 of the manga, comprised of the 307 pages of the tale told in the Black & White line & tone art! Sprinkled throughout are 10 more full – page pics of the characters, and 7 annotated character pics of Kouta, Chiziru, her brother Tayura, Class president Akane, students  Omi & Mio, teachers Yatsuka – sensei & Sahara – sensei, and Kumada the big bear spirit! Topping off the thick book are the folklore notes page, the publisher’s page, 2 full-page color pics, 2 two-page color spreads, and the cute color front & back cover illustrations of frisky Chiziru!

I think the art is quite lovely with the well – rendered characters, fashions, scenery, magickal FX, the range of the emotions, the yummy sammichs and the ice cream! There are some differences compurred to the anime, with the bit more intricate detail in the character designs, plus Kouta seems just a bit more mature in the manga! The courtship starts with foxy haste but genuine feelings seem to percolate, and there’s a good introduction to the initial characters, the pairings, and the true nature of the school. The “harem” trope has not engaged yet, so I will look forward to future volumes in hopes of more characters’ debuts &relationship in the fun tale of the affectionate kitsune! Now for more of the interspecies dating & dinners peppered by the romantic fox magick, I wish to say the words of praise for

Fairest #14!

Trini-chan:

Fairest is the spin-off series of the DC / Vertigo Comics’ Fables created by Bill Willingham, about the characters of myth & lore who reside secretly among the mortal populace in various places around the world, such as the Fabletown district of Manhattan, or the more rural town known as The Farm! The Fairest spotlights some of the great strong female characters such as the Rapunzel of the previous Hidden Kingdom story arc! That was the great tale which included Tomoko the Kitsune, and I was so pleased to see that my fox fix would continue with Reynard the Red shape-shifter fox who stars in the new story arc with his friends Peter Piper, Bo Peep, and Princess Alder the beautiful dryad! She is the part tree / part girl with the lovely smooth wood grain body, and the gorgeous Green eyes & lips to match her leafy coiffure! Whereas Kanokon’s Chizuru was of the Asian origin like Tomoko in the prior Fables story arc, Reynard is the European type!

Fairest #14 is priced $2.99, has the 32 pages consisting of the 12 ads plus the 20 page tale of “Aldered States” which is suggested for the mature readers due to the nudity, language, and the few disturbing scenes, including the rabbit scene which Bun might not wish to see but it is actually the very whimsical supurrnatural romantic slice-of life tale, written by Fables’ creator Bill Willingham who is such a nice person and the great artist too, whose early D&D game art & Elementals comics we have admired! Perhaps y’all have seen the sketch he did of The Elementals’ Rebecca “Fathom” Golden in our mewseum? Speaking of the art, the tale was gorgeously illustrated by Barry Kitson! I was particularly fond of his Legion of Super-Heroes comics!

The finished art on pages 10-16, 18 & 19 is by Iniki Minada, who so excellently rendered the Hidden Kingdom arc with Tomoko and Rapunzel! It is magnificently colored by Andrew Dalhouse whose fox fur, dryad grain, fabric sheen, and lantern lit suppertime scenes are so exquisitely colored! It was so perfectly lettered by Todd Klein, excellently edited by Shelly Bond and assistantly edited by Gregory Lockard, with the Alder cover art by Adam Hughes! I cannot find the lofty enough words to  adequately praise the endearing charm, warmth, mirth & beauty of the characters, the plot, and the art! I particularly like the intricate, ornate floral border elements around the panels, the characters poses & expressions, the dating scene, and the meta – fictional “breaking of the 4th wall” as Reynard directly addresses the readers! I will give Fairest #14 the grade of the “A+” as in Alder and the anticipation I have for the next issue! A is also for

Ame-Comi Girls #2!

Nyanko:

Ame-Comi Girls is the series starring the versions of the DC heroines and villainesses based upon the line of anime style statues which we like to collect! The tale began as the 5 issue mini-series which continued into this mew series! Previously, the heroines and villainesses were fighting each other, but when Brainiac arrived to destroy the world, they all teamed up to stop her! Then things got worse when Brainiac’s Black Kyptonite caused Supergirl to become evil! The series is written Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray who wrote the purrfectest Power Girl series a few years ago! It is lovingly lettered by Wes Abbot, colored by Wes Hartman edited by Jim Chadwick and assistantly edited by Sarah Gaydos! The initial mini- series was drawn by different artists but Eduardo Francisco has thus far drawn the first 2 issues of this 2nd, ongoing series! He also drew the cover art which was so vibrantly & luminously colored by Randy Mayor!

The spectacular colors, the character designs and the fun quality are among my favorite aspects of this series! I wish the live-action supurr hero movies & TV shows would have the bright colorful costumes like these! Ame-Comi Girls #2 is priced $3.99, has the 40 pages compurrised of the 9 ads, the credits page, and the 30 page tale of “The Rise of Brainiac Part 2” which is rated T for the teen readers! It is the battle royale of the femme fatales including Power Girl, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Steel, Robin, Batgirl, Robin, Duela, Catwoman, Harley & Ivy against Brainiac and her mecha, who destroyed Krypton and now threatens to destroy Earth! Supergirl is currently inconscious from the Kryptonite, the Manhunters are back on Oa consulting the Guardians, and there has been no sign of The Cheetah or The Silver Banshees for a few issues, but there are appurrances by The Kellies, Jimmy Olsen, Jim Gordon & Steve Trevor!

Some of my favorites moments in this issue are The Flash vibrating through the space ship, Batgirl wanting to clobber Duela, Power girl smooching the cute critter mech, Steel as the voice of reason, and Batgirl & Robin cutely hitch hiking! Sadly they are not only the two heroines without the supurr powers, but also have the angry purrrents and the government! Fortunately the Themyscrian & Kryptonian diplomatic immunity are offered by Wonder Woman and Power Girl, who hopes her cousin Super Girl can be cured soon. There are several stunning full-page panels such as The Flash peering out the window and confronting Brainiac, Power Girl blazing the heat vision tunnel, Wonder Woman & Steel amidst their unconscious comrades, Supergirl in the stasis in Powergirl’s fortress, the decision to form the league, and the scene of the Manhunters & Guardians of the planet Oa! OK I am done, and nyow here is Ilyana to tell us about

Red Sonja Unchained #2

Ilyana:

Arigato! Dynamite Entertainment is known for publishing the adventures of famous fierce fantasy femme fatales such as Dejah Thoris, Vampirella, Ms. Fury, and Red Sonja! She is one of our all –  time favoritest characters, who is purrhaps best known for her lovely Red hair that flows like the Red blood of the enemies upon her sword, her peerless purrowess in the combat, and her her iconic scale – mail bikini! In the February Mew we mentioned several of the famous ladies who have worn the metal bikini to cosplay as Sonja, but she has also worn the other outfits too, such as the mail shirt & shorts outfit, the leathery armor, the leather & metal armor with the skirt, and the plunging Blue pelt from the demon Bhamothes whom she skinned! The latter appurral is integral to the plot of this 4 issue mini – series which is the sequel to Red Sonja: Blue, which we reviewed for August 2011! Issue #2 is purriced $3.99 & rated Teen+ with the skimpy attire, the trash talk, bloody melee violence and the monsters!

Purreviosuly the metal bikini was damaged in the combat so she made the pelt into the substitution, but before the bikini could be repaired at the village she had to skip town after an unfortunate incident! The on the snowy  road she encountered the witchy merc Merisan and learned of the tomb of Queen Gheta the warrior Queen of Ilazarr, which Sonja has decided to search for treasure, in spite of dangers might lurk inside! Issue #2 has 32 pages compurrised of the 19 page tale plus the corrected repurrint of issue #1’s page 19, the Green Hornet comic purreview, the Dynamite mews page and the ads! It was written by Peter Brett who also wrote the purrior Blue story, pencilled by Jack Jadsen, colored by Marcelo Pinto, lettered by Simon Bowland and edited by Joseph Rybandt, and it is available in the choice of the 4 variant covers, three by Mel Rubi and one by Walter Geovani! The tale wastes no time in starting as Sonja fights the huge fanged tentacle monster on the opening full page pic!

It is the brisk pace full of the action and the adventure with all of the ingredients from the monster to the spooky deep depths filled with the skeletal remains of the purrior explorers, the deadly traps, until she reaches the glyph covered doors to the colossal crypt in the cavern! It is the amazing sight with the many steps & huge statues where await the sultry trickery, more of the combat, the cursed revelation, the mystic jewel, and the saucy chomp! We are also curious if the Queen is the neat homage to another famous warrior woman, Ghita of Alizarr! The tale has been quite fun, fascinating and thrilling thus far, and the art is quite lavish from the beautifully drawn characters costumes & creatures to the very dynamic fight scenes, the intricate scenery, and the sense of the tomb’s enormity! The dialogue was quite nice too, from the banter between Sonja and others to her own thoughts as she sizes up the situation and complains about it! Nyow I would like to discuss the femme fatale of

Miss Fury #1!

Ilyana:

As we mentioned in February’s Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight, Marla Drake alias Miss Fury, also known as the Black Fury was created in 1941 by June Tarpe Mills, who was one of the legendary pioneering women of the comics! That makes Miss Fury one of the earliest costumed catgirls of the comics along with others such as Catwoman, Cheetah, Tigress and the Black Cat! Marla is the wealthy heiress in Manhattan with the thirst for the exciting adventure, on the purrowl in the sexy Black skin tight costume with the nekomimi mask and the Red cape! Over the decades the different versions of Miss Fury have appurred in the comics of various publishers, including Marla’s her granddaughter Marlene as the later Miss Fury, and her aunt Stephanie as the evil Black Fury! Recently Marla appurred with other Golden Age & Pulp heroes such as The Shadow, The Green Hornet, Kato, Zorro, The Spider, The Black terror and The Green Lama in the Masks series published by Dynamite Entertainment!

Last month she was given her own mew series, and the first 32 page issue has the cover art gallery page, the Dynamite mews page, the 6 page purreview of Mark Waid’s Green Hornet series,  the 4 pages of the ads, and the 20 page tale of Miss Fury written by Rob Williams, illustrated by Jack Herbert, colored by Ivan Nunes, edited by Joseph RybandtIt is purriced at $3.99, and available in the 14 different beautiful covers, some much scarcer than others. Cover A by Alex Ross & cover B by J. Scott Campbell are equally common, but the 12 other covers by Paul Renaud, Will Conrad, Ale Garza, Herbert, Ross and Campbell are of varying quantities, including the various retailer incentive, comix shop & convention exclusives, and the limited edition covers! In this purrplexing nonlinear tale, Marla is the rich & glamorous but mean & bored heiress in Manhattan, and although she is very skillfully fighting the time – traveling Nazi spies on the rooftop as the tale begins in 1943, she is no angel!

There is purrimal rage, dishonesty, bloody violence, wild hallucinations, harsh language, nudity & sexuality in her tale which is rated T+ and not for the widdle kitties! The flashbacks of her thrill – seeking incidents in Kenya are purretty intense! The fully rendered art is lavish, intricate & beautiful, including the full – page pics, such as the skylight defenestration above the time machine, the bath tub scene, and the Nazi planes over the 2013 skyline! She is mewsually dressed in the purretty  clothes, such as the sleeveless White dress & hat, an, the little Black dress, but she is shown a few of times wearing less or nothing at all! There appurr to be two different versions of the Miss Fury costume, which changes slightly in her tempurral jump from 1943 to 2013, and I am confuzzled as to how this issue fits into the Masks comic’s continuity, but I hope she will figure things out in the next issue! Nyow for the review of the much nicer nekomimi – costumed adventurer here is Becca to tell us about

Critter vol.2 #9!

Becca:

Created by Tom Hutchison & published by Big Dog Ink, Critter is the fun comic book of the gleaming color & sexy costumes of the nekomimi motif, starring peppy Cassia as the titular supurr heroine of noble heart, feisty spirit & catgirl style! Her costume is the bare midriff, low-rise, sharp-clawed shiny Blue & White costume with the whip – like mecha tail & radio kitty ear pinna! She moved to Los Angeles to attend the college with her genius best friend Gina, met Jason the photojournalist and was recruited by Tabitha Cougar to join the neko style Purrfection team of Mouser, Kitten & Pole Kat, but Cassia was disappointed with their purreoccupation with fame & glamour more than heroism. Haunted by the appurrition of murdered comrade Josie, the team has since the broken up, and odd tempurral ripples surround Cassia who is is unaware that her heroic mom is the purrisioner of an evil time traveller in the future!

Issue #9 is purriced at $3.50 and has the 28 full color pages, compurrised of the uninterrupted 22 page tale written by Tom Hutchison, illustrated by Fico Ossio & edited by Kari Castor; plus the character purrofile page, the purreview page for tissue #10, and the bonus tale of Super Pawn by Jeff Pina! Kel Nuttall lettered both the Critter & Super Pawn tales! This issue is available in the 2 different covers, cover A by Ossio depicting Josie’s costume drapped across the grave and cover B by Jenevieve Broomhall depicting forlorn Cassia purrched upon the window sill. Nyow for the taste of the plot! A new phase seems to begin a month later back in Los Angeles after the break – up of Purrfection in Las Vegas and the loss of Josie’s ghost. Cassia and Josie’s boyfriend Jason have the heartfelt discussion, and later Cassie and Gina have the discussion about Jason when Kitten arrives at their doorstep!

She wears the skimpy school girl costume of the Purrple pigtails, glasses, cropped sleeveless White shirt, pierced bely button, and the Red necktie to match the pleated mini –  skirt, mew la la! It is quite the entrance in the full –  page pic, as this Kitten wishes to be adopted as the mew side kick for Critter! She needs the mew sense of the purrpose and has decided to change her hero purrsona from Kitten to School Girl! Gina is dubious, but Cassia agrees and determines the rules for the side kick’s education and training! Later Cassia, Tabitha & Jason pay the poignant visit to Josie’s mom. while elsewhere the time traveling villain abducts another hero into the future for the sinister scheme! In Part 2 of the bonus back-up tale of the supurr pawn shop, clerks Ronnie & Mikey bid upon the auctioned storage unit, but they are very alarmed by the winnings, and hopefully they will survive the purrchase in

Critter vol.2 #10!

Becca:

Issue #10 is also of the $3.50 purrice and the 28 pages compurrised of the 22 page Critter tale plus the purreview page, the advertisement, and Part 3 of the supurr pawn shop! The Critter tale was written by Tom Hutchison, illustrated by Alisson Borges, colored by Kate Finnegan, lettered by Ken Nutthall & edited by Kari Castor; and the pawn tale is by Pina & Nuttall! This issue is available in the 3 different School Girl covers, cover A by Ossio, cover B by Broomhall, and cover C by Corey Knaebel! This issue begins on the bright beautiful sunny day at the coastal cafe by the palms and beach as Cassia begins the School Girl’s training! There are some very big, dazzling panels, including the 2 page spurread of the training montage, and School Girl in the more conservative version of her costume for her crime – fighting debut! She manages to clobber the car thieves, but things get worse as the sea level mysteriously rises to the disastrous flooding in another 2 page spurread, and Critter and Slipstream try to rescue lots of people!

Then in Part 3 of the super pawn shop tale, Ronnie & Mikey learn more about the lot they won at the auction! Issue #10 has the very different art style with the larger panels, the color gradients, and the digital graphic FX, but it still has the lovely rich vibrant color, the purretty gleaming look, the sexy clothes, and the luminous quality of the skyline and the heroines’ powers! I also liked Critter’s poses, as she surveys the scene with her swishy tail from the rooftop, when she leaps down into the crouch, and purrches atop the palm tree! From the purreview of the next issue’s “High Tide” tale, it looks like the danger will only get much deepurr and sharky, but hopefully that will result in the fresh seafood for the catgirl! Critter continues to be full of the fashionable feline female fun, and as mewsual I am already craving the next issue! That is all of the comics critiques portion of the mew but we still have more of the catgirl comics characters to commend in our

Monthly Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!

Mary Nyan:

Hai! The Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight is the monthly portion of The Mew which purraises the famous catgirls & nekomimi whom we appurreciate, whether they are actually part cat, just act or dress the part! We are purrogressively inclusive in the purraise for those who are either the purrmenant or tempurrary catgirls, the anthropurrmorphic and were – kitties, and the characters who have the purropurr cattitude or feline female fashion motif! They might be found purrowling in the cinema, television, toys, purrint, digital and any other media from around the world! This month we wish to shine the spotlight upon a few of the kemonomimi of Purrsia Press and Mini-Komix!

Meryl:

Based in Atlanta, editor / publisher Jer Alford’s Purrsia Press published & distributed the international anime – style & anthropurrmorphic comics such as

Jesi the Genie, Astrix, Celly’s Wings, Desert Flame, Destiny, Golden Dream, Anthrology, Catgirls Galore, Scratching Post, Bunnygirls & Catgirls Convention Special, and the Free Furry Comic Book Day issue! Jer is also the purropurrietor of the Mini-Komix http://minikomix.blogspot.com collective of indy comics creators of all the genres and ages, with the mini – comics, graphic novels & sketch books in purrint or on the web! Several of those artists & authors also have the web comics hosted by Drunk Duck!

Yvonne:

Hai, they host the web comic Senshi vs Sentai http://www.drunkduck.com/Senshi_Vs_Sentai which was created by Rick Butler, Ryan Chamberlain and Jer, and it features Sushi Dessert who is the catgirl I wish to nominate, nya! She and the other kemonomimi Sushi Dinner, Sushi Snack, Sushi Lunch, and Sushi Breakfast compurrise the Sushi senshi team, in the cute bare – midriff Red sailor fuku costumes, accessorized by the matching boots and the tiaras! nya! It is the amewsing purrody of the sentai ranger team mixed with the senshi heroines of the various species and the dash of the daikaiju and the anime topes, nya! Nyow here is Mie-sensei to tell us about the other heroine team of the various species, nya!

Jeannie:

Hai, there are catgirls, bunnigirls, fox girls, cyborgs, sorcesses, martial arts and guns plenty in the Boiled Spoons manga written by Carl ‘Mr Panda’ Desforges. Based upon his Kawaii 5-O role playing & miniatures game by GroundZero Games, the British series was repurrinted in Purrsia Press’s U.K. Manga anthology. Starring Kumiko, Mai, Mariko, Masumi, Mirai, Natsuki, Rumi, Tsugumi & Yuriko of Japan’s Sendai Magical Police Department, it was illustrated by Nicola Bolton, Kerrie Dale, Blessin Dixon, Leah Holmes, Ross Liversidge, Jim McGee, Claire Sager, Emma Vieceli, Anna Vuong, and Laura Watton It begat the spin-off series of Burnt Soup illustrated by Vanessa Wells & Nichola Ya,, set in the same time & place and starring officers Ming Hua, Kaori, Karen, David, Sarah & her foxy mother Miranda. For more information I will recommend the author’s site http://www.tsugumi.karoo.net/html/the_comics.html.

Bun:

Bunny girls such as Sushi Breakfast  and Mirai are also amongst the staples of Purrsia Press and Mini-Komix, you know. Others include Natalie Prayor & Jer’s tales of Rabina the bunny demi-goddess; and Alicia Johnson & Jer’s Equniox shojo tales of  Li Li & Mikari at Carrot Top High School, hee! Rabinella the vampire bunny girl, who is one of the students in the wacky high school romantic comedy web comic Gaijin Hi http://www.drunkduck.com/Gaijin_Hi! It was created by artist Amanda Garman & Jer, with later art by Rick Butler and Michael “Haze Man” Hayes and Brad Porter! Rabinella is part of the love polygon for Dean with cute gothy cousin Sophie, Jesi the purrky genie, and Pura Pura the martian princess catgirl!

Becca:

I am purrticularly fond of  Ms Pantaloon the Principal, and Sophie’s cousin Karen who is the supurr heroine Neko Kamen! Another fine comic featuring the nekomimi student that I wish to shine the spotlight upon is Game Over! This time the school cat girl is Makoto, who has the martial arts purrowess against the Purus challenger creature in the game! It is another comic by Michael Hayes who as was among the artists of Gaijin Hai as Bun noted!

Tara-chan:

Gaijin Hi’s initial artist Amanda Garman also wrote the other Purrsia Press comic of the supurrnatural catgirls titled Earn Your Wings, nya! It is the cute tale of angel catgirl Lin who tries to help her widdle friend Chin get her wings too, nya! However, Lin’s naughtier twin Lan arrives for the interference, although you can tell them apurrt because Lan is the more buxom Black haired angel catgirl whereas Lin has the Blue hair. Fortunately their taller elegant Mama is there to help sort things out, nya!

Mielikki:

I wish to nominate adorable Neko-chan of Neko-chan’s Tiny World which was beautifully illustrated by Serena Paccagani & written by Martin Day! Neko-chan is the lovely lithe dark skinned Blonde catgirl hybrid with the computer mind & playful feline behavior who materializes when purrvy Toshi seriously misuses his genius friend Mashiro’s computer! Fortunately, Mashiro’s girlfriend Aya is like totally understanding, gives the darling catgirl the name, and purchases the crop top & shorts for Neko-chan!  fter Mashiro’s nosey rival Clive gets caught snooping, he will need the change of the clothes, heehee!

Trini-chan:

Some of the aforementioned artists and dozens of others purrvided the purretty pics of the ladies of all sizes, colors, breeds & species that graced the first Girls of Purrsia Press Swimsuit Special in 2005 and the Purrsia Press Swimsuit Special for 2006! Both of the specials were the treasure troves of the  sexy, playful and whimsical Black & White and color images of the kemonomimi fun on the beach and ocean! There were the few fox girls in the 2006 issue too, including Kira from P.T. Cooper’s Chivalry and Knavery http://www.chivalryandknavery.com fantasy web comic! Several of those artists & authors contributed to Georgia Anime’s Free Manga Day Anthology, which has the gleeful school catgirl cover art by Natalie Prayor who also drew the front cover  for the Girls of Purrsia Press Swimsuit Special #1!

Nyoka:

Natalie, Aimi Tokutake, Kevin Charlesworth & Jer were the creative team of Kitrina Kisiragi, alias Kitty Honey, the peppy supurr catgirl with the tip of the tail in the homage to the anime character Cutey Honey! She has the short Red bob cut hair and the Blue eyes matched by the sexy skin tight Red & Blue costume accented by the widdle heart ornaments, and the heart – shaped cut out to frame the boobies, mew la la! Kitrina inherited the supurr powers from the magickal relic which her archaeologist father discovered, and has since become the celebrity crime fighter! There was also the later lawyer version of her in the web comic Kitty Honey, Attorney at Paw!

Ilyana:

I keep hoping to find the magickal artifacts! Well, those who trespass into the hidden jungle valley will find themselves on the business end of the spears of the Aztec Anthropomorphic Amazons! It is the delightful web comic by Kurt Wilcken http://www.kurtoonsonline.com, and what could be finer than to be the well – armed catgirls who get to wear the sexy clothes and be served by the catboys in the fabulous ancient city of gold? It is governed by the neko – matriarchy of elegant mystical Queen Beruthiel, although her purriestess Mehet-Abel does seem a bit gruff to guards Bastis & Boo!

Nyanko:

Lashonda Lawson alias Kinetic Kitty is the teen supurr heroine of the martial arts & electrical energy powers to zap the criminals that purrey upon Anthro City! She has the petite pinna purrked from her lush shoulder-length Black corn row coiffure, the gorgeous dark carameowl skin tone, the slender striped tail and the voluptuous figure in the Black halter top & shorts costume with the fingerless gloves! She was created by Desi Turner, who also drew the Thong Girl comixs! Kinetic Kitty has appurred in the Catgirl Crusaders by Purrsia Press, in the Feline Force anthology by Mini-Komix, and her web comic at Drunk Duck http://www.drunkduck.com/Kinetic_Kitty!

Elizabeth:

Another supurr catgirl who appurrs with Kitty Honey & Kinetic Kitty in Felne Force from Mini-Komix is The Tantalizing Ti-girl created by Jer Alford http://minikomix.blogspot.com, written by Sean Taylor http://www.taylorverse.com & drawn Willie Jimenez http://westwolf270.deviantart.com! She is the powerful alien tiger grrl with the magnificent physique and the Amazon culture in the Hot Pink cut-pout maillot with the matching fingerless gloves for her sharp Black claws that match her belt, ears, hair, and the stripes upon her tawny Golden pelage, in the contrast with her White face, hands and tightly toned tummy!

B.B.:

Kuneko is the extraterrestrial catgirl descendant of the Goddess Bast in Foxy’s charming and purretty comic The Life of Nikuya! Poor Kuneko’s space ship crash lands on the Earth where she meets Melody the kind hearted demon girl with the lovely horns and the tail, and her high school class mate Nikuya who has the hot temper and lots of weapons! Bring it home, Petra!

Petra:

Nyow it is my honor to shine the spotlight upon the very special catgirl named Purrsia, nya! She is the Blue eyed Red head catgirl genie in the harem costume who was freed from the can of the cat food by her unsuspecting mew ‘Meowster” who she loves and wishes to please, but the frisky affectionate catgirl genie can cause the awkward situation when the Meowster already has the girl friend Sophie who is the purrky sassy cute type. Purrsia transforms into the cat whilst Sophie is around, much to the delight of lovesick Gordon the pet house cat, nya! For the catgirl bonus we wee Sophie and other girls cosplay at the anime convention, and there is the brief appurrance by fellow genie Jesi, nya! Although she was one of the flagship characters of the “Purrsiaverse” with Jesi & Rabina, she only appurred in the one issue of her comic book, which was purrinted in a couple of editions with the different sizes & cover art, although, Gaijin Hi’s characters seem to be the incarnations, of the trio, nya!

Mike:

Purrsia #1 was created, written & edited by Jer, with the character design and the cute pic by Jyn Donham, and the Black & White 36 page tale magnificently illustrated by Bridget E. Wilde http://bewilderedart.com, who also provided the front & back cover art for the larger edition! She is one of my most favorite artistic inspirations, and we are honored to display the 2 beautiful pics by Bridget in our Mewseum! She is the headmistress of The Wilde Home for Wayward Catgirls http://www.bewilderedart.com/catgirls which was in our March Spotlight! The front cover of Purrsia #1’s smaller edition is by Joe Rosales & Isabel Gonzales, the back art is by Art Baltazar, and there is the bonus pic by Jon Barrett! That will conclude this month’s edition of the spotlight, but we will praise more of the famous catgirls next month! Now it’s time for the

Cinema, TV & DVD Reviews with the

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season One DVD!

Meryl:

Hai! My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is the supurrr popular animated TV series which is the 4th generation of Hasbro’s My Little Pony purroperty which originally started 30 years ago in 1983! This current generation was developed & executively purrduced  by artist, animator, writer & purrducer Lauren Faust http://fyre-flye.deviantart.com whose other great credits include Powerpuff Girls, Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, and Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls http://milkywayandthegalaxygirls.com! She was also an animator on The Iron Giant! We were overjoyed to get the complete 1st season on the R1 NTSC standard DVD! This includes all 26 twenty-two minute epurrsodes  of the 1st season which are purresented in the 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreeen format, so that is about 9.5 hours of the wonderful high quality pony fun, although I the box lists it as +/- 8 hrs, and from 2011 to 2012, and I thought the 1st season was from 2010 to 2011!

Aside from the quick logo of the video distributer Shout Factory at the start of each disk, there are no ads nor purreview trailers on the disks. The 4 disks are snugly kept but easily removed  from the hinged inner trays of the plastic case, which has the cardboard outer sleeve, and contents list on the back of the insert, with the lovely cover art depicting the “mane six” ponies of Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Applejack Rarity. Fluttershy, & Pinkie Pie, plus Spike the widdle dragon and the cute bunny who have the delightful activities & adventures in Ponyville! They honor Princess Celestia of Equestria, and are assisted by the 3 younger fillies Scootaloo, Applejack’s younger sister Apple Bloom, and Rarity’s younger sister Sweetie Belle! Those 3 fillies call themselves the Cutie Mark Crusaders, because they are trying to earn the widdle Cutie Mark symbols on their flanks! The epurrsode of “The Cutie Mark Chronicles” reveals how the mane six got their marks!

The voice cast includes Andrea Libman as Fluttershy & Pinkie Pie, Tabitha St. Germain as Rarity, Luna, Nightmare Moon, Nicole Oliver as Princess Celestia & Cherilee, Ashleigh Ball as Rainbow Dash & Applejack, Tara Strong as Twilight Sparkle, Michelle Creber as Apple Bloom, Claire Corlett as Sweetie Belle, Madeleine Peters as Scootaloo, and Cathy Weseluck as Spike! The singing voices are  by Shannon Chan Kent as Pinkie Pie, Rebecca Sholchot as Twilight Sparkle & Karumi Evans as Rarity! We got to meet Tara Strong at Bot Con the few years ago! Nicole, Cathy, Andrea, Tabitha, supurrvising director Jayson Thiessen, executives Brian Lenard & Robert Fewkes purrvide the very witty optional audio commentaries along with executives Brian Lenard & Robert Fewkes & supurrvising director Jayson Thiessen for the epurrsodes “Friendship Is Magic Part 1”, “Friendship Is Magic Part 2” & “Winter Wrap-Up”!

They are joined by director James Wooten, art director Ridd Sorensen & song writer Daniel Ingram in the commentaries for “Suited for Success”, “The Show Stoppers” &”The Best Night Ever”! The 2.0 stereo audio is in the English language only with no subtitles for the epurrsodes, although there are the subtitles for the sing-along videos for theme song and the “At the Gala” song, which are among disk 4’s bonus features! The other bonuses are the widdle purrofiles of Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Applejack & Princess Celestia at 30-45 seconds apiece; and the purrintable coloring sheets which you need the computer for. I wish there were purrhaps a few more bonuses such as galleries and documentaries, but I am pleased to have this collection of the good value and the great entertainment which i give the grade of “A” as in Apple Bloom!, and I hope to get the 2nd season DVD! Nyow here is Lizzy to tell us about the

Game of Thrones The Complete Second Season DVD

Elizabeth:

Hai! Game of Thrones is the epic fantasy TV series on HBO based upon the famous novels by George R.R. Martin and it is one of my favoritest TV shows of the recent years! It is about the medieval feudal struggle for the throne in the lands of Westeros, with the magickal incidents of the dragons, demons, zombies & sorcery arising amidst the politics and the warfare! I think the series has everything going for it, from all of the supurrb actors purrtraying the great characters in the complex plots with the great characterizations & dialogues at the good pace, to the magnificent locations & sets & costumes with the highest purrduction values, the great cinematography, mewsic and the FX, but it is not for the widdle kitties due to the harsh language, sex & nudity, torture & combat violence, plus the huge wolf, the fire breathing dragons, the shadowy demon, and the arctic undead!

The 3rd season just started last month, and the 2nd season was recently released in the very handsome DVD boxed set! The R1 NTSC standard DVD package has the 5 disks and the booklet in the fold out case which has the gorgeous portraits of Daenerys Targaryen, Catelyn Stark, Robb Stark, Tyrion Lannister, Jaime Lannister & Jon Snow! It sides into the sturdy slipcase, which slides inside the nice embossed outer sleeve!  The 10 epurrsodes are appurroximately 55 minutes apiece, and are purrsented in the widescreen format with the choices of English, French or Spanish language, and the optional subtitles of English, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Korean & Thai! The booklet has the epurrsode guide, the list of the bonuses, the description of the 5 claimants to the throne, and it olds out to the neat 14 1/8″ x 19 1/8″ map of the continents!

Weiss & directed by Alan Taylor! “What Is Dead May Never Die” was written by Bryan Cogman & directed by Alik Sakharov; “Garden of Bones” was written by Vanessa Taylor & directed by David Petrarca; and “The Ghost of Harrenhal” was written by Benioff & Weiss & directed by David Petrarca! “The Old Gods and the New” was written by Vanessa Taylor & directed by David Nutter, “A Man Without Honor” was written by Benioff & Weiss & directed by Nutter, and”Blackwater” was written by George R.R. Martin & directed by Neil Marshall! Except for “The Ghost of Harrenhal”, each epurrsode has the optional audio commentary by the purrducers, directors, writers or actors; but “What Is Dead May Never Die”, “Blackwater” & “Valar Morghulis” have 2 audio commentaries apiece!

While too many DVDs these days seem to scrimp on the bonus features, not only do you get the commentaries, but disk 1 has the 7 character purrofiles, and disk 5 has the great 30 minute documentary on the making of “Blackwater”, the 7.5 minute discussion of the 4 religions of Westeros by Martin, Weiss & Benihoff; and the neat fun 24 minute “Inner Circle” round table discussion of the show by Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark), Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), David Benioff & D. B. Weiss! I am so very impurressed with this DVD boxed set because you get all of the season’s epurrsodes and all of those great bonuses and the booklet in the beautiful box, so I will give it the high purraise and the grade of the “A” as in Arya Stark (who is purrtrayed by Maisie Williams)! Nyow for the further epic sword & sorcery, here is B.B. to review the

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Two-Disc Special Edition DVD!

B.B:

Hai! For our review of The Hobbit movie itself, please see the January Mew and for our review of the Tauriel action figure, please see the February Mew! We gave the movie the high purraise, purrchased the soundtrack CD, and nyow we have the DVD to discuss The movie is also available in the various other editions but this is just the review of the 2 – Disc Region One NTSC Standard DVD set! It is packaged with the outer cardboard sleeve with the front photo of Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, around the plastic case which contains the two Region 1 NTSC Standard DVD disks. Disk 1 has the 169 minute PG-13 purrsented in the lettereboxed widescreen format, with the spoken language choices of English, French & Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound, and the optional subtitles in the choice of English SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf or Hard – of – hearing), French & Spanish.

The DVD lacks the audio commentaries, image galleries & booklets, but Disk 2 has the special features in English with the optional subtitles in English SDH, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean & Thai! The features include the 6 Hobbit trailers, 3 video game trailers, the 6.5 minute look at the New Zealand locations, and the 10 video blog segments hosted by director Peter Jackson, with comments by many of the cast & crew! The segments total 127 fascinating minutes to examine the start of purrduction; the location scouting,  shooting block one, filming in 3D, locations part 1, locations part 2, the Stone Street Studios tour, the wrap of purrinciple photography, the post purrduction stage, and the movie’s World purremier in Wellington! It is the very entertaining, informative, captivating and whimsical look at the vast aspects it took to make the movie!

That includes the concept art, maps, models, costumes, hair, make-up, purrosthetics, purrops, sets, locations, horses, transportation, food, stunts, choreography, purrformance capture technique, photography, movie equipment, lighting, computer technology, sound recording, mixing, editing, mewsic, purractical & visual FX, the Comic Con appurrance, and the fans! The New Zealand locations are so beautiful, the tours of Stone Street Studios and Weta Workshops are amazing, and there are lots of humorous moments! There were even the glimpses of the making of the river barrels scene and Legolas fighting scene! Also included the instructions on how to download the Ultraviolet copy of the movie by the limited time’s deadline! Oh I am so looking forward to the 2nd Hobbit movie! Nyow for the tale of the contempurrary necromancy here is Myayr to review the recent remake of

Evil Dead (plot spoiler warning)!

Mary Nyan:

Arigato, B.B.! I like horror movies so I was a bit curious about this Evil Dead movie directed by Fede Alvarez, which is the 2013 remake of the 1982 Evil Dead which was written & directed by Sam Raimi. Raimi purrduced the remake along with Bruce Campbell, who starred as the iconic character Ash in the original trilogy, and has the very quick cameo appurrance in the remake after the end credits. The purremise of the remake is the same: a small group of friends stay in the creepy cabin in the very rural woods, where in the basement they discover very icky things, including a mysterious book full of macabre images, Upon reading the book, the demonic entities are summoned, which purroceed to torment, ravage, and possess the lodgers in the very gory manner.

Unfortunately the only way to quell the demons is to kill the possessed humans by extremely violent methods, which leads to further bloody gore. I have very mixed feelings about the remake, and I will admit that the purreview trailers did not enthuse my expectations, purrhaps due to the style of the sounds and the editing. The cast does a fine job, but I did not think that the characters they purrtrayed were very likable. The purrops, cabin & locations are very effective; the mewsic score & sound FX  were OK, but the very rushed pace of the movie diminished the potentially unsettling ambience, and the annoying “shaky camera” technique called too much attention to itself, thus undermining any “suspension of disbelief”. Sadly this is often the case of many horror and action movies these days.

The stunts, make – up & FX are abundant, well – executed and quite visceral, but I don’t think the attempted shocks raised the bar of cinematic horror. So much of the movie was very purrdictable, so I did not think it was very scary. I think the only unpurrdictable part was when Bruce Campbell would appurr in the movie, but unfortunately it is only for a few seconds which do not seem integral, compurred to those widdle bits added to the end credits of the Marvel Comics movies! So in closing, I will differ in opinion with the movie poster’s claim that it is “The Most Terrifying Film You Will Ever Experience”, and I hate to say this, but I was a bit disappointed by the Evil Dead remake; and purrhaps this is not the apt compurrison, but I did not like it nearly as much as last year’s Cabin in the Woods movie! Nyow for the next movie review here is Nya-sensei to discuss

G.I. Joe: Retaliation!

Nyanko:

Yep! This live-action movie Directed by Jon Chu is the sequel to 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which we gave the average grade of ‘C’ as in Cobra in the September 2009 Mew! I will admit to the mixed feelings in the anticipation of the sequel movie, because the purreview trailers did not excite me mostly due to the unappealing editing & cinematic techniques, but our enthusiasms did build with the mew toys and the recent convention, and I am always in the craving for the action movie full of the martial arts, shootouts, chases and the purrotechnics! I was also optimistic about the cast of the movie, although there are some changes from the purrior movie.I will try not to spoil too much of the plot, but the basic purremise is that since the cliffhanger of the purrior movie, the disguised villain Zartan has captured and impurrrsonated the Purresident!

In Retaliation he manages to have a bunch of the Joes eliminated, frame the survivors as traitors, have Cobra Commander freed from the purrison, and threaten the world with the orbital weapons! Thusly the surviving Joes must escape, hide, purrove the conspurracy, find any allies  and purrvent COBRA’s plans! Meanwhile, the feud betwixt Snake Eyes and Stormshadow continues as the ninjas of the Arashikage Clan become more involved between Cobra and the Joes! The heroes include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Roadblock, Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye, Ray Park as Snake Eyes, Elodie Yung as Jinx, D.J. Cotrona as Flint, Channing Tatum as Duke, Joseph Mazzello as Mouse, and Bruce Willis as General Joseph Colton for whom the Joes are named! We reviewed the Retaliation Lady Jaye action figure in March!  RZA purrtrays the Blind Master of the Arashikage Clan, and Jonathan Pryce has the dual role as as both the President and as Zartan impersonating the President!

Repurrsenting COBRA are Byung Hun Lee as Storm Shadow, Arnold Vosloo as Zartan, Ray Stevenson as Firefly, and Luke Bracey as COBRA Commander! I think the cast does the fine job, including the appurrance by James Carville at the political event, where Lady Jaye wears the lovely Red dress to distract the enemy! It is just one of her great outfits and Jinx has the beautiful White, Red and yellow outfits too! Fortunately there are none of those silly “power suits” from The Rise of Cobra! Compurred to that purrior movie, there are fewer of the spurrawling futuristic locations & mecha, but there is still a nice buffet of the edged weapons, gadgets, firearms, vehicles & the orbital weapons! The vehicles include the HISS Tanks, Fang boats, Ghost Hawks, Ninja Commando, Firefly’s Blaster Bike, the Tread Rippurr, the El Camino and others amidst the missiles & the tracer fire! Roadblock’s friend in the old neighborhood has the nice car too!

I am not so sure about that orbital weapon, but the sets & locations are very nice, and I especially liked the ninja battle on the high snowy mountain cliffs, which has the nice fight choreography and the stunts, but unfortunately there is so much of the unpleasant slow mo / bullet time / speed ramping, shaky-camera techniques, too many quick editing cuts and the rather rushed pace throughout the movie. However, there are also the good sounds & mewsic, much heroic camaraderie and amewsing banter amongst the characters, and the thrilling action in the international locations from Washington DC and Fort Sumpter, to Germany, Japan, Korea, Pakistan and outer space! Aside from the startling casualties which are to be expected in warfare, I thought the movie had the overall sense of fun, and I enjoyed it more than The Rise of Cobra, so I will give G.I. Joe: Retaliation the slightly better than the average grade of B Minus! Nyow to continue the Joe, here is Mike with his

G.I. Joe Con 2013 Report!

Mike:

Thank you Nya-sensei! The 2013 International G.I. Joe Collectors’ Convention http://www.gijoecon.com is hosted by a different city each year; last year it was in New Orleans, and this year it was April 3rd – 7th at the JW Marriott hotel in downtown Indianpolis! It was sponsored by Hasbro and supervised by Brian Savage, the director of the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club & editor of the club magazine, who also supervises the Transformers Convention Bot Con http://www.botcon.com! For our review of Bot Con 2008, please see the June 2009 Mew, and for our review of the G.I. Joe Con 2012 see the July 2012 Mew! I attended the con with Action Figurologist James aka ob1 who was among our guests for the October 2007 Mew, who had a dealer’s booth at the con!

It was the long drive for us from North Carolina to Indiana, passing through scenic West Virginia and Ohio along the way, but it went pretty easily!  This was my first time to visit Indianapolis and I was very impressed! There is some really lovely architecture, and I liked the plan of the downtown area which radiated around the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Monument Circle. There are many massive, ornate, stately & curvilinear buildings, including the nearby Government buildiings and the numerous nice hotels, restaurants, pubs, convention centers, the shopping mall, the Artsgarden and lots of other venues connected by the skywalks, but the weather & traffic were great for the outdoor stroll! Rocket Fizz soda & candy shop and Downtown Comics were nearby too!

Also by our great hotel was White River State Park, and Victory Field where the minor league baseball team the Indianapolis Indians were playing! I think they will be playing the Durham Bulls sometime this Summer! James’s booth was full of action figures for sale, ranging from to loose figures to mint of the card Marvel & DC, Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, Space Men; a few blasts form the past such as Visionaries, C.O.P.S. Chuck Norris Karat Komandos, and of course several G.I. Joe toys! I also brought along a few original comics art pages from the Devil’s Due G.I. Joe comics that were inked by our friend Andrew Pepoy http://www.pepoy.com, who is also Simone & Ajax’s creator and a guest of The Mew in December 2008!

Some of the nice pages featuring The Baroness or Lady Jaye were rather tempting! Speaking of Lady Jaye, after the bit of sight seeing on Thursday, that evening we got in the registration, dealers & club store lines to pick up our badges & information packets, and to buy some of the con exclusive toys, such as the Lady Jaye figure and the Nocturnal Fire assortment! Then we and the other dealers started to set up the booths, and I must say that everyone I met was very friendly! A few sight – seeing tours were arranged for the attendees, and a special group trip to see G.I.Joe: Retaliation at a nearby theatre!  Friday morning began with more of the dealers’ set up, the artistic diorama & photo contests’ set ups, the traditional parachute drop, and the G.I. Joe Filmfest panel!

From noon to 5 pm, Friday’s activities included the dealers room opening, contest judging, discussion panels, seminars and the autograph sessions with special guests Mary McDonald Lewis (the original voice of Lady Jaye), Bill Ratner (the original voice of Flint), Marvel comics writer / editor Larry Hama, and Kirk Bozigean, who was original product manager for the G.I.Joe; A Real American Hero toys with the fascinating insights into the industry! Everyone seemed glad to be there, and it was fun to hang out in the dealers room or nearby seating areas to chat with fellow collectors & fans about the hobbies!

There were lots of wonderful old & new toys in the dealers room, I was quite impressed with the concepts and craftsmanship of the dioramas and photo contests!

There were maybe 3 dozen cosplayers of all ages, races & genders who greatly added to the ambience, such as Rosemary “Screamers” Ward who was amazing as Zarana of the Dreadnoks! James and I treated her to a bottle of Grape soda, which the Dreadnoks crave! Last year her friend Des was brilliant as Daina of the Oktober Guard, and this year she won the adult category of the costume contest in her stunning Red & Yellow Kim “Jinx” Arashikage costume! The costume contest has the kids & adults categories, with the winners determined by the audience applause. It was part of the Saturday casino night & awards dinner with the delicious supper, entertainment by jugglers, fire breathers & card dealers, and the auction to benefit the Hasbro Children’s Hospital!

There was a great view of the Indians’ baseball game too! Before I knew it, it was already Sunday, the final day of the con, and my favorite discussion panel was the cosplay topic by Rosemary & Des! After the final autograph sessions & prize drawings. At 3:30 pm it was time to pack up, and by a bright sunny 5 pm we were back on the road to go home! In closing, I’d like to thank the hotel employees and all of the other cordial folks of Indianapolis who made our visit there so very pleasant; and all of the G.I. Joe Con staff, volunteers, sponsors, guests, dealers and fans who made the event so much fun for us! On that note, we are so honored and delighted to be visited by two of those very kind, talented, and entertaining people so let’s please warmly welcome to The Mew-

Our Special Guests, Rosemary and Des!

Yvonne:

If y’all have attended the fun International G.I. Joe Collectors Convention, purrhaps y’all have seen these two lovely ladies who grace the con with their supurrbly costumed purresence, nya! For example, Des has cosplayed as Daina, Scarlett, Jinx and Helix, whereas Rose has cosplayed as The Baroness, Zarana, Cobra Commander and a Cobra troopurr, but those G.I. Joe & Cobra costumes are just the tip of their various convention cosplays from anime to X-Men and the other purrsuits to discuss, as we welcome Rosemary “Screamers” Ward and Des as our special guests, nya! Aloha y’all and welcome to The Mew, nya!

Tara-chan:

We are so happily honored with your kind purresence, nya! The first important question is… what tasty beverage would y’all like, nya?

Des:

(wearing Scarlett’s jeans & tee shirt) Root Beer!

Rose:

(wearing the Baroness’s Black bikini) I’ll take a pina colada – and I like getting caught in the rain!

Tara-chan:

Yvonne:

Where are you from and what is your home town like, nya?

Rose:

I’m from a little place called Akron Ohio. But you Joe’s might know it as Arboc.

Des:

Washington DC. It’s pretty interesting place.

Yvonne:

Hai hai, I like all the interesting mewseums, galleries, and – and  and the historic places in Washington, DC and Ohio, nya! Speaking of the homes, do the visual or purrforming arts talents run in your family nya?

Des:

Not really- some of my cousins are in performing arts, but not my immediate family.

Rose:

My dad’s a bit artistic & a bit daring at times. So I’m sure I get a great deal from him.

Tara-chan:

(scampurrs back with the Root Beer & Pina Colada) The beverages, nya!

Yvonne:

I understand that Rose has the kitties, nya!  have two widdle kitties too, nya! What could you tell us about your cats, nya?

Rose:

Sadly I lost one last year.. he was 17. Both kitties I’ve have for over 17 years though and both have had moments of cosplay fun. We’ve dressed them up many time.

Tara-chan:

Sad nya!

Yvonne:

It is the long fruitful life of the cat , nya. Does Des have any pets, nya?

Des:

No, but would love a puppy!

Yvonne:

The pup would be good, nya! What is your favorite type of mewsic, or your favorite mewsicians, nya?

Des:

Top 40, Hard Rock, alternative, Hip Hop, R&B… and some Metal… but not all.

Rose:

Weird Al would be my favorite.. although I love tunes from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s too :)

Tara-chan:

Yay Weird Al, nya! Howbout your favorite games and the sports nya?

Des:

Scrabble…strategy games… hmm sports include volleyball, rugby and hockey

Yvonne:

Purrhaps you would like to purrtake of our island rec league beach volleyball, nya! What are the purrfurred sports for Rose, nya?

Rose:

Relaxing in bed, ordering room service, is that considered a sport?

Tara-chan:

Hai that would be the ideal full tummied power cat nap, nya! Who are your favorite artists & authors, nya?

Des:

Of course Larry Hama, Rob Atkins, Tom Feister, Jamie Tyndall, Erica Shultz, Vincente Alcazar, Ed Brubaker, Gail Simone, and anything Chris Claremont or Stan Lee does!

Yvonne:

Those are definitely amongst the supurrb purrolific talents, nya!

Rose:

Stephen King for his horror books & Favorite artist… truthfully none other then my dad, he’s a great artist.

Tara-chan:

The purreview for the remake of Stephen King’s Carrie looks kinda scary, nya! What kind of art your Dad’s art, nya?

Rose:

My dad does a lot with pencils, his art centers more on classic cars, stars, farm and country scenes, things he’d remember from the 50’s.

Tara-chan:

Sugoi, nya! What are your favorite books & comics, nya?

Des:

G.I. Joe, of course!

Yvonne & Tara-chan:

YO JOE, NYA!

Rose:

Stephen King again and I enjoy Marvel’s Transformers comics from the eighties best. But I do collect many others as well.

Yvonne:

Oh we are big fans of Arcee the Autobot, and the animated Transformers movie, nya! What are your favorite movies & TV shows, nya?

Des:

NCIS, Big Bang Theory, G.I. Joe Renegades

Tara-chan:

Yay I like Abby on NCIS, and – and I especially liked the Big Bang epurrsode when Penny cosplayed as the catgirl, nya!

Rose:

Stephen King again, horror movies and Zombie movies. I do like a lot of drama related movies too though. TV shows.. only two that I can think of, I don’t watch to much TV. I love Walking Dead though & Monk.

Yvonne:

The zombies are quite popular monsters these days, nya! Oh I liked Monk’s Tony Shalhoub in the Galaxy Quest, nya! So then, who are your favorite actors & voice actors, nya?

Rose:

I’ve always been a huge Star Trek fan, so I love James Doohan & DeForest Kelley. I have a ton of favorites in voice acting, to name a few Michael Bell, Neil Ross, Jack Angel and Morgan Lofting!

Tara-chan:

Those are such great actors but speaking of Star Trek  it is sad that DeForest Kelly and – and James Doohan have gone to the final frontier, nya.

Des:

Hmmmm. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Jason Statham, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Pine, Daniel Caig, Olivia Wilde, Helen Mirren, Damme Judi Dench, Jennifer Garner, Julia Roberts, Elodie Yung and Maggie Q… and my avorite voice actors are the G.I. Joe voice actors because they were the best!

Yvonne:

Between Oblivion, The Big Wedding, Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Red 2 there are new movies starring Tom Cruise, Robert De Niro, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Pine, and Helen Mirren! What did

you think of Elodie Yung as Kim “Jinx” Arashikage  in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, nya?

Des:

I think she was exactly what she needed to be. She was introduced in this movie so we cannot get her full story, but I think she was portrayed as she should have been and the actress did a fantastic job!

Yvonne:

Which Jinx costume do you purrfur, nya?

Des:

Right now I’m torn between The GI Joe Collector Club’s FSS Jinx and the San Diego Comic Con traditional jinx! I like the updated version as it brings in more girls interested in GI Joe and we have to bring the line into a modern world.

Tara-chan:

What did you think of Sienna Miller as The Baroness in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, nya?

Rose:

I had my complaints. But then I’m a huge fan of the original comic and cartoon.

Tara-chan:

Who are your other favorite characters, nya?

Rose:

G1 Ratchet from Transformers & Dr McCoy from Star Trek.

Des:

Jean Grey / Dark Phoenix, G.I. Joe’s Scarlett, M3’s Machiavella Maria Marcona, and the Birds of Prey!

Yvonne:

Could you tell us about your Dark Phoenix costume, nya?

Des:

Sure! Growing up I always loved Dark Phoenix. I loved the balance of Jean Grey, but also the strength and conviction of the Phoenix Force.

Yvonne:

What is your opinion of the late comics artist Dave Cockrum’s costume designs in general, nya?

Des:

Loved his X-Men art and I especially remember his sketches of Dark Phoenix and Storm. He could always capture the essence of the character. Their facial expressions show so much with such subtlety at times and then with strong detail.

Tara-chan:

Yay I like Storm and – and Phoenix too, nya!

Yvonne:

Are there any costume / fashion designers, models or cosplayers who are purrticularly inspurrational to you, nya?

Rose:

Truthfully.. I can only think of one that inspired me when I first planned to do a Transformers costume and that was Jace Moore.

Des:

I think every cosplayer is inspired by the characters they portray… fashion designers are a different area.  But I do love Michael Kors- simple yet elegant.

Tara-chan:

What are your favorite toys to collect, nya?

Des:

Marvel Universe, GI Joe, and anything unique from the 80s!

Rose:

Transformers would be my favorite, but I’m also a huge fan of She-ra, Jem, He-man and the list goes on when it comes to 70’s and 80’s toys :)

Tara-chan:

What are the some of the most purrized parts of your collection, nya?

Rose:

Our G1 boxed Transformers collection, we have about 170 mint in their original boxes.

Tara-chan:

170 mint in the box, nya!!!

Yvonne:

What as the first costume you ever made, nya?

Des:

It was a folk princess costume I made with my mom.

Rose:

The Baroness from G.I. Joe.

Yvonne:

Rose = the supurrb Baroness, nya! Which version of her costume do you purrfur, nya?

Rose:

The original black suit from the cartoon, but then I’ve liked her outfit from the IDW comics too.

Tara-chan:

How did you make the Baroness’s chest armor, nya?

Rose:

The first chest plate was molded from a femme trooper, my more recent came from Pit Viper studios.

Yvonne:

Des’s cosplay as Daina & Stormovik of the Oktober Guard was so purrfect, nya! Could you discuss that purroject, nya?

Des:

We wanted to do a theme for JoeCon and I gravitated towards the Oktober Guard for obvious reasons… but also because I love strong female characters.  Daina is the only female member of the October Guard, Daina L. Janack was also the team’s only Czechoslovakian.  She is both a sniper and a helicopter pilot and is one tough cookie!

Yvonne:

What can you tell us about Daina’s Dragunov snipurr rifle, nya?

Des:

Daina’s preferred weapon, the Dragunov, a Russian sniper rifle with semi-automatic capability; it can be used in close quarters when necessary- she is a world-class sniper

Tara-chan:

Could you list your various costumes, nya?

Rose:

I’ve got quite the list, including three Transformer related costumes. Soundwave & Wheeljack being full sized and then a sexy nurse Ratchet. I have five G.I. Joe costumes..Zarana, The Baroness, A femme Cobra trooper, Wild Bill and then Cobra Commander. Anime wise I have two Robotech costumes, Lisa Hayes and Miriya. I also have a Hellsing costume and Wicked Witch costume from the Wizard of Oz. That’s of course not adding my Star Wars related costumes. Of and my Sailor Pluto costume :)

Des:

Wow! That’s a lot.  But I can tell you that every year I have at least 2-3 new costumes that I make and wear on average 3 costumes at every con.

Yvonne:

Gosh y’all have lots of costumes, as the purroliific cosplayers, nya!

Tara-chan

Could you tell us about the Sailor Pluto , nya?

Rose:

I’ve always liked the characters and I went with Sailor Pluto because she was closer to my actually age. Love playing that scout though.

Yvonne:

What is the most difficult or complicated costume y’all have made, nya?

Rose:

That would be the G1 Transformer costumes, those two took months and many trips to the hardware store and of course I couldn’t have done it without my boyfriend and our friend Jack Doud.

Des:

I made a Sabretooth costume for my boyfriend, who had to stand for about 8 hours while I hand stitched everything in place including the bodysuit.

Tara-chan:

That is the endurance, nya! I could catnap for that long but I could not stand like that for that long, nya!

Yvonne:

Aside from the Sabretooth, do y’all make costumes for other people, nya?

Des:

I do. I was commissioned to do some of the costume work for a fan film and I get commissioned by friends to sew their costumes,

Rose:

Nope that I haven’t.

Yvonne:

What are your favorite & least favorite materials to work with, nya?

Des:

Don’t have a favorite fabric… but I do find it difficult to work with military grade material used for military equipment & clothing.

Rose:

Resin and fiberglass can be a pain!

Yvonne:

Hai, we have used it on the boats, nya! How do you store & transport your costumes, wigs, make-up, accessories etc, nya?

Des:

To store: Bins… bins… and more bins…. To transport, I have bags that are thick cloth like so that the costumes don’t get wrinkled or smushed.

Rose:

Depending on how were traveling. if it’s something were driving to, we’ll place most of it in bags. But if were flying, were very limited to what we can bring and sometimes we do ship items.

Yvonne:

Do you have any technical advice for making costumes?

Rose:

Truthfully. I’d say just go with the flow, have fun with it and mistake will happen, just be ready to do over.

Des:

Write out what you will need to create the costume from head to toe before you start.. and give yourself enough time!  Which I never do! Ha!

Yvonne:

Do you act, sing, dance, or purrform stunts as part of the purrtrayal, nya?

Des:

No.

Rose:

I do act and put on a show when playing these characters!

Yvonne:

We like your Zarana cosplay too, nya! Can you sing the Cold Slither song, nya

Rose:

I have :)

Tara-chan:

Do you have a favorite brand of the grape soda, nya?

Rose:

Crush grape soda :)

Yvonne:

It has the good taste of the grape, nya! Do you have any safety tips, do’s & don’ts for the cosplayer at the cons, nya?

Rose:

If you get into the acting part as I have before, just be careful not to break any bones and to always have fun! Does and don’ts… I never take anything off. Put that as a “don’t” –  and never go up to someone’s hotel room. I’ve been offered that before.

Tara-chan:

Eek, nya! Please be careful, everybody, nya! What are your favorite cons, or the upcoming cons & events you hope to attend, nya?

Rose:

Botcon, Joe Con, Otakon, Wizard World, New York Comic Con and I’ve been to Dragon Con.

Des:

NYCC, Baltimore, and Retro Con.

Yvonne:

What costumes do you dream of making the most, nya?

Rose:

Another Transformer, a Voltron costume and Battle of the Planets. Maybe another Robotech.

Des:

A Wonder Woman costume which I am doing this year!

Tara-chan:

Oh gosh we would love to see those, nya! We are almost to the end of the intermew, so what are your other goals for your hobbies & career, nya?

Rose:

Hobbies kind of mix in with my goal. I love collectables and one day, I’d like to go into business selling collectable toys and comics.

Des:

Getting in shape, spending more time with friends, and I’d like to get back into archery and chess. Hehe. I know that’s two different hobbies but I’m always multitasking!

Yvonne:

Des might wish to visit Jenjen’s kyudo club for the archery fun, nya! Are there web sites where folks might find y’all, nya?

Des:

You can reach me through The Finest: A GI Joe Costume Club Facebook’s page https://www.facebook.com/#!/TheFinestCC or my cosplay facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Joe.Eternal

Rose:

My site Screamers Retro Flashbacks: http://screamersretroflashbacks.wordpress.com and Retro Con http://retrocons.com, a convention I help organize!

Tara-chan:

Oh please tell us more about the Con, nya!

Rose:

Retro Con is Saturday September 14th, 2013 in Oaks, Pennsylvania and in it’s 2nd year. Last year we had about 700 attendees, 100 tables, lots of costumes, and positive comments!

Tara-chan:

We wish y’all the good luck with the collecting, the clubs, and the cons! Domo arigato gozaimasu, nya!

Yvonne:

Hai thank you for joining us and granting the intermew, and we hope y’all will enjoy the rest of the visit, nya!

Rose:

Have fun and keep it real!

Des:

Thanks for having us. See you next time!

The Cat Lady Sings…

Tara-chan:

Yay that was great to meet Des & Rose, and – and  I hope they will enjoy th– POLYPHEMIS, NYA!!! (the distracted catgirl purrances after the large Light Brown 5.25″ wingspan moth)
