Introductions and Stuff Since The Purrior Mew!

Mike:

(wearing the Carolina Hurricanes tee shirt, Khaki shorts, Charcoal Gray Nike trainers & Catgirl island baseball cap) Aloha y’all, and welcome to The Mew for our monthly batch of reviews & discussions! Today’s show comes from the observation deck at Catgirl Island’s Lake Neko, prior to the evening luau and July fireworks! I’m Mike, the show’s ‘Purrducer’, and here are The Ladies of The Mew!

Mary Nyan:

(the catgirl wearing the Longleaf Pine purrint yukata) Aloha!

Petra:

(the catgirl wearing the Strawberry purrint yukata) Hi Hi, nya!

Bun:

(the bunny girl wearing the Blueberry purrint yukata) Guten Tag!

Ilyana:

(the catgirl wearing the Sweet Potato purrint yukata and the Gold tail ring)  Whassup?

Jeannie:

(the catgirl wearing the European Honey Bee purrint yukata) Nihao.

Becca:

(the gynoid catgirl wearing the Cardinal yukata, waving the widdle USA flag) Aloha!

Nyoka:

(the catgirl wearing the Venus Flytrap purrint yukata) Howdy!

Nyanko:

(her twin sister wearing the Carolina Lily purrint yukata) Howdy!

Trini-chan:

(the kitsune wearing the Scuppurrnong Grape purrint yukata) Namaste!

Tara-chan:

(her best friend catgirl wearing the Dogwood purrint yukata) Namaste, and here is onee-chan, nya!

Yvonne:

(Tara-chan’s older sister wearing the Scotch Bonnet seashell purrint yukata) Namaste, nya!

Elizabeth:

(the catgirl wearing the Emerald yukata) Aloha! It has been the week full of the patriotic festivities, so yesterday we wore the Red, White & Blue yukatas to match the flags and the bunting, and today we are wearing the North Carolina themed yukatas with the various state symbols!

Mike:

So what have y’all been up to since the prior Mew?

Mary Nyan:

The Summertime semester at the Purrforming Arts Center started so I have been busy teaching the Hula classes! In the mean time I am still helping to train the appurrentice mikos at the shrine, and I have been sewing the anime, comics and the Doctor Who and costumes for the cosplayers! Howboutchoo, Petra?

Petra:

Oh I have been busy as mewsual between the art mewseum, the various island arts activities and the beach volleyball, nya! We have been purrparing the exhibit of the island photo compurrtition at the mewseum which will be the beautiful exhibit that Tara-chan and Trini-chan have helped with, nya!

Bun:

Hai, they have been the very industrious volunteers! We will have the special non-competing section of the photos by the mewseum staff & volunteers! Let’s see… hmm other than that I have been busy with the volleyball and baking more of the carrot cakes! Perhaps Tara-chan and Trini-chan can tell folks about their photos?

Tara-chan:

Hai the cakes are so delicious with the cream frosting, nya! I have been caring for the kitties and – and helping onee-chan with the charters, nya. I entered the photos of the Gray Seal, the Yellow Slider Turtle, the baby Robins in the nest, the Polyphemis Moth, the Pandora Sphinx Moth, and – and the Eastern Cicada Killer, nya!

Trini-chan:

I have entered the photos of the Chipmunk, the Dragonfly, the Ladybug, the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, the Cabbage White, and the Southern Emerald Moth! We have our cameras with us in case of more oppurrtunities! Otherwise I have been surfing and attending Jeannie’s belly dance class!

Jeannie:

She quite excels in the hip shimmy, the tummy undulation and the serpentine tail technique. In addition to the dance which Vonny’s drumming circle is graciously accompanying, it has been the typical month including the morning yoga, the afternoon kyu-do, the robotics club’s summer mech camp, and the swim wear modeling.

Yvonne:

Oh we are purroud to purrvide the purrcission, nya! It is good that Tara-chan has been helping with the charters which have reeled in the bumpurr crop of the Bluefish, Croakers, Flounders, Groupurrs, Mackerels, Marlins, Mullets, Snappurrs, the Wahoos for the sports fun and the market purrice, nya! So how are things under the water for Ilyana, nya?

Ilyana:

Oh it has been great and I am excited about the sunken pirate ship cannons, but I have also been looking forward to the nightly festivities here such as the floating lanterns of the riverwalk, the purrade along Beautiful Downtown Purrbank, the mermaids’ bioluminescent water works! So how are things at the dojo, the magick shop, and the spa?

Nyanko:

Fine fine! When I am not at the dojo or the gym annex for the training and the tournyaments I have been reading, swimming, posing and helping sis and the cats at her magick shop, and we have been helping to supurrvise the Yosakoi Dance Matsuri and chapurrone with the purrents the street sparkler gatherings for the widdle kitties!

Nyoka:

We are lucky to get the early good spot on the deck to view the faeries’ foxfireworks over the lake! Mie-sensei says it will be their most elaborate show and they will join us afterwards for the Bunnibun’s cakes. They will bring the honey treats and the Kitt Inn will bring the ice cream for the a la mode! That leaves Becca, Lizzy & Mike to go next!

Becca:

There is not much mew with us besides the unwind with the hot salsa dance after the massages and the the treatments at the spa, but for today’s Mew I have the art book reviews, and Lizzy has the manga reviews! It was sad to hear of the passing of legendary purrolific author Richard Matheson, so we are reading his short stories. I just finished I Am Legend and I have started The Shrinking Man!

Elizabeth:

Hai and I have curled up indoors with Somewhere in Time and after that I plan to read Now You See It! We are going to watch some of the movies too, such as What Dreams May Come and Real Steel! The library has the display of his credits including Duel, The Night Stalker, and Hell House!

Mary Nyan:

He also wrote Trilogy of Terror, which has that killer Zuni doll with the sharp knife & fangs that could chomp a girl’s tail!

Ilyana:

(her tail nervously curls) A Barracuda almost did that to me, but he wound up as the sushi in my tummy, ha ha!

Mike:

I will also recommend the TV shows that he wrote starring William Shatner, such as The Twilight Zone’s “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” and Star Trek’s “The Enemy Within”!  Ah, speaking of Star Trek, y’know that Syd Mead was hired to envision V’ger for Star Trek – The Motion Picture!

Nyanko:

Mike cannot resist the temptation to mention his favorite movie!

Nyoka:

It tends to be not just the mention, but the long ramble, heehee!

Bun:

Hai, especially when he wishes to praise Syd Mead!

Petra:

Of course, the high purraise is supurremely deserved, nya!

Becca:

It is the good point!

Mike:

Hey, ah, look, it was just segue since his birthday is this month!

Jeannie:

So desu. Please continue.

Mike:

Since the 1950’s and his service in the Army, legendary industrial designer, concept artist & futurist Syd Mead has designed vehicles, products, commercial art, graphics, games, structures and whole environments for many clients & corporations around the world, and there have been many books, prints, magazine articles, videos and exhibits pertaining to his astounding vision & brilliant illustrations! He is also famous for his motion picture work, including Star Trek – The Motion Picture, Blade Runner, Tron, 2010, Aliens, Short Circuit, Time Cop, Strange Days, Johnny Mnemonic, Solar Crisis, A Sound of Thunder, The Core, Mission to Mars, Mission Impossible 3; Japanese anime such as Yamato 2520 and Gundam… and we wish him a most wonderful future full of many more happy years!

Tara-chan:

Yattahh, nya!

Trini-chan:

So, what is the next portion of The Mew?

Yvonne:

Nyow it is time for our

Heroes Con 2013 Report, nya!

Mike:

Heroes Convention http://www.heroesonline.com/heroescon is North Carolina’s biggest convention, which evolved from the Charlotte Mini-Con started by Shelton Drum, the owner of  the Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find comics chop in Charlotte! I’ve been attending the con with fellow members of the Carolina Comic Book Club since the early 1980’s, so it has become the fun tradition! There were hundreds of great guests, artists, publishers, exhibitors & dealers, lots of presentations, discussion panels, & other fun activities in the Charlotte Convention Center and the 3 officially participating hotels, and maybe about 20,000 fans of all ages, genders & ethnicities, including the many cosplayers! This year’s con was Friday – Sunday June 7-9th, with exhibitors’ set up starting on Thursday the 6th! It seemed to be much bigger than ever, with over 200,000 square feet of exhibit space & over 100,000 square feet of programming for the  for the family – friendly fun!

Nyanko:

Thursday after the breakfast we arranged the carpools for the expurrdition to the mainland where we met Mike and other friends on that Thursday morning! Some of them were past guests of The Mew such as Ob1, Pacozord, Chef Ron  and the other dear friends who we met in the Piedmont area for the lunch! Then it started to rain, and West of the Triad Area (Greensboro, High Point & Winston-Salem) the purrogress was delayed due to the weather, the constructions and the accidents! We were able to detour a bit for the afternoon snack, and later arrived in Charlotte to check-in to the lovely hotel and to help set up the club booth at the convention center! It is interesting to see the set up of the different tables, booths & displays! After the Halls closed for Thursday we went back to the hotels to spurruce up and went to the nearby restaurant for the suppurr in the purretty downtown area but after the meal it was time for the catnap!

Trini-chan:

Hai, it is in the neat part of downtown Charlotte amongst the skyline of the nice architecture, the landscaping and the light rail train near Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers and the Panthers’ Cheerleaders, The Top Cats! Friday morning after the breakfast we went back to the con which was all set up, with approximately 280 guest artists, writers & editors, plus another 270 amazingly talented friendly folks in the artists alley! There were about 150 exhibitors with booths, including publishers, schools, charities, clubs & organizations, podcasters, dealers, selling old & new comics, cards, art, memorabilia, DVDs, toys & collectibles, shirts, fashion accessories & costume parts, collecting supplies, art supplies & equipment! The guests, artists, exhibitors & the event stage were all there in the same huge bay of the conference center, with the various panels, purresentations & contests in the ballrooms upstairs near the food court!

Petra:

There were long lines to get into the con and lots of the exhibitors’ trucks, cars & vans at the loading docks, but it is very well staffed with lots of the very polite & expurrienced event staff to handle all of the registration, information, loading, security, food, the auctions, the contests, and the other activities, nya! Some of the main events were the Friday night Drink & Draw with the mewsic at the Hilton, the Inkwell Awards ceremony on Saturday, the big Saturday night art auction at the Westin, the Sunday Silent Auction and the Costume Contest, nya! Friday night after the con we dined upon the delicious food at our friend Kevin’s restaurant The Iron Grill, and then chatted the while in the Hilton bar before the nap, nya! Saturday evening after the con we strolled to the nearby Epicenter for the pub suppurr, then looked in on the art auction action at the Westin ballroom, and chatted the while in the bar again before the Saturday night nap, nya!

Bun:

It was the great fun time for the discussions, autographs, sketches, the commerce and the photos! There were live podcasts, the daily Quickdraw Contests for the three age groups, and workshops conducted by alumni of the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) pertaining to self-publishing, mini-comics, character creation, dynamic figure drawing, composition, and creating maquettes! The discussion topics included breaking into comics, graphic design in comics, young adult graphic novels, cover art, good girl art, hip hop in comics, the history of censorship,, sports in comics, crime stories, classic literary adaptations, newspaper strips, Kickstarter, Batman, Starman, Green Lantern, Wolverine, Daredevil, Hawkeye, Transformers, Akira, Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti, inkers, Marvel artists & writers, Dark Horse Comics, Valiant Comics, Image Comic, and the Carol Corps – Carol Danvers Fan Club meeting!

That is about all of our report, but we have wonderful art from the con, so nyow here is Bunnibun to tell us about the

Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, nya!

Bun:

Hai! For those who are here for the first time, Galleries 1-5 are the exhibits of Mike’s illustrations & photographs, whilst Guest Galleries 1 and 2 display the images from other folks with their kind permissions! On the web site, the most recent pics are on the bottom row of the widdle “thumbnail” portions, so just click on one of the ‘thumbnails’ to see the entire picture! This month we are proud to present the mew additions to Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html and  Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html!

Firstly of those six new pics is the  inked pencil sketch of “Kiki & Jiji” by Richard Case http://rhomblog.blogspot.com who is the supurrb comic book & video game artist! He was among the guests again at Heroes Con! Kiki is the 13 year old witch who can fly on her broom and talk to her Black cat Jiji in the 1985 novel Majo no Takkyu-bin which was written by Eiko Kadano & illustrated by Akiki Hayashi! The tale was was adapted into the 1989 anime film Kiki’s Delivery Service written, purrduced, storyboarded & directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and animated by Studio Ghibli!

Secondly of the additions to Guest Gallery 2 is the more wonderful art of the animated heroines in the perfect pencil sketch of Star Trek’s “Lt. M’Ress” by Elbonie Kirchoff http://yastach.deviantart.com who wrote and drew the anthropomorphic comic book Sutari The Mystic for WM! Comics! M’Ress was the Caitian catgirl communications officer aboard the starship U.S.S. Enterprise in the 1973 animated Star Trek series! She was purringly voiced by actress Majel Barrett, who also starred in the various other Star Trek roles!

Thirdly & fourthly we have the wonderful 9″ x 12″ colored pencil & watercolor paintings of “Apple Bloom” and “Ti-girl & Tire” by Scarlett Edwards who is the daughter of famous artist Tommy Lee Edwards http://tommyleeedwards.com! Apple Bloom is the cute widdle sister of Apple Jack and part of the filly trio known as the Cutie Mark Crusaders in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic! Ti-girl is the playful pretty kitty of the distinctive tiger stripes who loves her tire! Kawaii! These were painted by Scarlett at Heroes Con, where she cosplayed as Apple Bloom’s friend Rainbow Dash and assisted her dad! They are the very talented family, and perhaps Scarlett will be the famous visual or performing artist too!

Fifthly we have the “Nuku Nuku (Chibi Version}” fan art by Misty Hopkins http://bunnychai.blogspot.com, who was among our guests in March 2008! Perrhaps y’all have seen numerous prior illustrations & cosplay photos from her in the mewseum! Nuku Nuku is the super gynoid catgirl heroine of the anime series Bannou Bunka Neko Musume, which is also known as All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku- Nuku! She was created in 1990 by Yuzo Takada , whose credits also include 3×3 Eyes and Blue Seed!

In Misty’s pic of “A Foxy Bra” her fan-character Strawberry is the Pink-haired gynoid inspired by Hidekazu Sekishima’s designs for the Saber Marionettes anime based on Satoru Akahori’s manga! Strawberry is perplexed over this perdicament, because although her boobies are still somewhat covered, they are usually covered by the black bikini top, not a dangling frisky fox! The fox in this colored pencil pic is Misty’s original mascot character Gary! Due to the hint of side-boob, the pic is perhaps mildy mature in nature and maybe not “work safe” or for the widdle kitties to view!

Nextly in Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html is Mike’s pic of the “Dealer Catgirl” hand-trucking her boxes of merchandise to sell at her convention booth! We are wondering sort of merchandise might be in those boxes, and hope it will be the fun & profitable event for her! This pic was sketched with the pen and spruced up a bit in Photoshop! Finally in Gallery 6 is “Finished Version” of the sketch Mike entered in the 2013 Heroes Convention’s Quick Draw Contest! In the Quick Draw, the contestants have the 20 minutes to pencil draw something on the 11″ x 14″ bristol board. Mike’s rushed rough sketch of the catgirls & mermaids at the resort was unfinished and he did not win a prize, but after the con he decided to finished the sketch in pencil, pens, marker & Photoshop!

Nyoka:

I like the fluttery sense of the motion on Kiki’s dress, hair, and the shoulder bag, with Jiji hanging on tightly to the broom stick!

Nyanko:

I am purrticularly fond of Richard Case’s Sandman, Doom Patrol & Annie Ammo comics, and Elbonie Kirchoff’s Surati comics!

Mary Nyan:

Hai hai and it is so nice to have more art of M’Ress! Look at her darling swishy tail- she seems to be anticipating something good!

Tara-chan:

Yattah, nya! I think that is the purrfect pony painting of Apple Bloom with her Yellow coat, the Red mane and- and the tail, nya!

Yvonne:

She has the lovely large expurressive eyes,  the cute grin and the ribbon, and I hope she will find her Cutie Marks soon, nya!

Becca:

Ti-girl has the cute widdle kitty fangs! Scarlett has the good mixed media technique and definitely inherited the great family talent!

Elizabeth:

Chibi Nuku is so cute in her Sailor Fuku outfit with her Red cowlick coiffure and her cyber ears purrked!

Trini-chan:

She would need her special “mermaid” diving gear to swim in the resort pool that Mike drew!

Ilyana:

The window of the resort’s lagoon full of fish is like looking into a seafood buffet heehee! Whatchoo think, Jen?

Jeannie:

I am pondering the contents of the Dealer Catgirl’s boxes. I will speculate that they contain books and / or toys.

Petra:

It is the mystery of the art, nya! That is a rather naughty fox latching on to Strawberry in Misty’s pic, heehee!

Mike:

I love the intricate detail of Strawberry’s braided hair, the overlapping parts, and the shading that conveys the solid sense of mass! Ah, well thank you for presenting the art, Bun!

Bun:

Dooitashimaste! Now it is the time for the

Other Things Of 1973…

To put that into the purrspective, 1973 was amidst seasons 10 & 11 of Doctor Who starring Jon Pertwee, with tales such as The Three Doctors, Planet of the Daleks, The Green Death and The Time Warrior.

Ilyana:

Hai I think that was also about the time that The Tomorrow People, The Ascent of Man, Last of the Summer Wine and Are You Being Served purrmiered on TV!

Becca:

Oh gosh that was also during during the first two seasons of M*A*S*H, and when The Young and the Restless and The Six Million Dollar Man purrmiered!

Trini-chan:

That was the good year for the anime too, such as Aim for the Ace, Cutie Honey, Doraemon, and Panda Go Panda!

1973 was purrticularly significant because of the purremier of the Star Trek cartoon, and the debut of Lt. M’Ress that Fall!

Don’t forget A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, Schoolhouse Rock, Jeannie, and – and Super Friends, nya!

Yvonne:

Speaking of the year in Trek, the 2nd ever International Star Trek Convention was February 16th-19th, 1973 at the Commodore Hotel in NY, nya! I remember that because our December 2009 guests Deborah & Devra Langsam were amongst the con staff, nya!

Mary Nyan:

The first KISS concert was that year too! That was the great year for the mewsic such as Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, The Rolling Stones’ Goat’s Head Soup, The Who’s Quadrophenia, Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy, and The Allman Brothers’ Brothers and Sisters!

Nyoka:

Nyanko:

That was the epic year that Secretariat won the Triple Crown and the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins won the Superbowl!

Bun:

You know, some of my favoritest Frank Frazetta masterpieces were painted in 1973, such as The Death Dealer, The MoonMaid, Atlantis, Ghoul Queen, Black Panther, and A Fighting Man of Mars!

Petra:

Hai it was the exqusite era for the illustrations and the comics with Red Sonja, Shang-Chi, Blade, Howard the Duck, Moondragon, Thanos, E-Man, Swamp Thing, Black Orchid, Manhunter, and The Legion, nya!

Mike:

One of my all-time favorite Batman stories was from that year too, “The Joker’s Five Way Revenge” in Batman #251 by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams! Ah, well, we sort of stray-catted from the movie topic, but now here is Bun to get us back on track with her

World War Z Movie Review!

Bun:

Arigato! World War Z is the action / horror movie directed by Marc Forster who previously directed the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace! World War Z stars Brad Pit as the scientist who works for the United Nations and tries to protect his wife (purrtrayed by Mireille Enos) and kids from the global zombie apocalypse! They manage to escape from the millions of fast zombies in Philadelphia and are helicoptered to the fleet in the Atlantic Ocean, where he learns more of the global situation, but then he needs to go on the mission to find the cause! This takes him to various places including Israel where he teams up with an Israeli soldier (portrayed by Daniella Kertesz), with the hordes of the zombies escalating and chomping at them along the way! The movie is only very loosely based upon the supurrb novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks, who also wrote The Zombie Survival Guide and the Recorded Attacks graphic novel!

There is also an audio drama adaptation of the World War Z book! Unfortunately, aside from the premise of a zombie apocalypse and perhaps a few bits of dialogue, the movie has little in common with the book! The book is the collection of the journalist’s interviews with survivors from all over the world and all aspects of society, with their first hand accounts across the years, and how the world was changed by the zombie war, whereas the movie is about one person’s mission during a few days to find the cause of the pandemic. I was very disappointed that the movie’s  was so drastically different, plus there were lots of other changes I found hard to accept. Compared to other notable zombie apocalypse tales, the movie is rated PG-13 and relies more of the suspenseful tension and the intensity of the chases, with almost no blood or gore, which is fine but it did felt a bit too tidy at times.

In the movie, the victim becomes the fast running zombie about 10 seconds after getting chomped, whereas in the book the victim becomes the sjow shambling zombie hours after the chomp. It does have the good performances and the high production values of the sets & locations, the huge crowd scenes, and the great visual FX to depict the vast numbers of the zombies. I thought some of the quieter moments were actually the creepiest, such as the laboratory sneaky scene! The sound mix was effective although I did not care much for the choice of music, especially the tracks during the end credits. The movie is only about 2 hours long and seemed rather rushed, I saw the regular 2D version so I cannot comment on the quality of the 3D version! I was definitely fascinated more by the book than the movie, and that is pretty much my critique, and now it is the portion of The mew to discuss our recent favorite

Preview Trailers, TV Commercials & Print Media!

Jeannie:

We are huge fans of supurrb actress Zoe Saldana, who recently appurred as Uhura with the other officers on the cover the Official Star Trek Magazine #45; and as the cover girl in the short Cream Mint Green Dior gown photographed by Liz Collins for InStyle Magazine’s Hair special. Since then she has been the cover girl in the breezy satin & organza dress by Dior photographed by Devon Heath for the compact June issue of In Style’s UK edition; and the cover girl in the spaghetti strapped Black Gucci top photographed by Tom Munro for the June issue of Allure.

Ilyana:

Hai, she was the purrfect Pandoran purrincess Neytiri te Tskaha Mo’at’ite of the Omaticaya in James Cameron’s Avatar! Speaking of the heroic latinas and catgirls, we really liked Ava Ayala alias The White Tiger in the Avengers Academy comics, so it was nice to see her grace the cover and S.H.I.E.L.D. purrofile pages in Avengers – Earth’s Mightiest Heroes #12! In the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon she is voiced by Caitlyn Taylor Love http://www.caitlyntaylorlove.com!

Petra:

Miss Fury purrowls upon the various comic book covers from Dynamite Entertainment, nya! She purrches atop the chimney in Joe Benitez’s art for cover A, she stretches atop her pile of purrey in Billy Tan’s art for cover B, she pounces upon the enemy in Paul Renaud’s art for cover C, she seems to have purrloined their guns in Wagner Reis’s art for cover D, and wears the strapless bare-midriff outfit for Ale Garza’s “risque” retailer incentive cover, mew la la, nya!

Bun:

She also appears along with other Pulp & Golden Age era heroes such as The Shadow, El Zorro, The Spider, The Black Bat, The Green Lama, The Green Hornet and Kato in Alex Ross’s cover art for Masks #8! Cat Woman is purrked to crack the whip in Emanuella Lupacchino’s cover art for Catwoman Annual #1, and seems to have kitty whipped The Penguin into shape upon the ledge in Rachel & Terry Dodson’s cover art for Cat Woman #21! Purrhaps the poultry is on the menu tonight, heehee!

Ilyana:

Unfortunately things are not faring as well for Cat Woman in Jay Fabok & Alex Sinclair’s rather bloody variant cover art for Justice League of America #5– eek! However, I noticed in the cat-alog advertisement that she and The Cheetah are amongst the many supurr villains in David Finch & Richard Friend’s cover art for DC Comics’ forthcoming Forever Evil #1! Oh oh- oh have y’all seen that

Nationwide Insurance commercial set in the burgled home, with Jana Kramer as the stealthy agile anti-burglar in the Black leather? She is sort of like the graceful anti- Cat Woman, hee!

Elizabeth:

Speaking of the agile lovely ladies, purrima ballerina Georgina Pazcoguin of the NYCB graces the June cover of Dance Magazine in the beautiful Black costume, and the purretty Purrple and the White costumes in the featured article! We liked Alyssa Milano as the bewitching Phoebe Halliwell and tempurrary mermaid on Charmed and she is on the July / August cover of Maxim! Other great purrforming artists on the magazine covers are are Yiu, Mio, Ritsu, Tsumugi & Azu-meow who compurrise the After School Tea Time band in the anime K-ON! and they are on the cover of Neo #111!

Yvonne:

Speaking of the animations, we want to see Equestria Girls, although Tara-chan and I still have not yet seen Epic or From Up On Poppy Hill yet, nya! Well, Our State is one of our favoritest magazines and in the July 2013 issue’s article on the 10 Best Kept Local Secrets is Sarah Perry’s half- page purrtaining to the Polydactyl cats that frequent the Burrus Market which has been around since 1866 at Hateras which is not far from here to the North East, nya!

Tara-chan:

I like… I like the Bird’s Eye commercial with the talking bear family catching the upstreaming succulent salmon, and – and the  Bass Pro Shop’s commercial with the girl catching the yummy looking fish from the pool, nya! There is tasty Trout on the Summer cover of Fly Fusion, the Cichlid upon the June / July cover of Amazonas, the noodled Catfish on the debut cover of Catfish World, and the big bass has been caught upon the June cover of BassMaster, nya! Oh nyow my yummy has the craving, but I will try to wait until the AfterMew Luau, nya!

Trini-chan:

Speaking of the sports, it was so good to see Alana Blanchard on the cover of Surfgirl #42, Tyler Wright on the cover of Salted – A Surfing magazine for Women issue #2, Jen Lee on the Summer cover of SUP (Stand Up Paddle surfing) the Mag, and Kristy Jones on the Spring cover of SUP International! I like the One-A_Day Vitamins commercial with the three surfer girls paddling to the lighthouse shore too! Legendary Serena Williams wears the strapless gradient Blue maiillot on the July cover of Essence, and olympic skiier Lindsey Vonn is in the promo spot for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi!

Nyanko:

LPGA legends Annika Sorenstam and Paul Creamer are in the “While We’re Young” series of USGA commercials! Unfortunately we were not able to visit the mainland in time to see Jill Canuso and her Queen of Diamonds dragster, but we got to see the bit of NHRA drag racer Erica Enders-Stevens on TV, Off-Road racers Heidi Steele and her husband in the Yokohama Tire commercial, Traxxas funny car driver Courtney Force and her daddy on the cover of RC Driver #116, and the 2 sided poster of Danica Patrick and her Chevy SS in the June issue of NASCAR Illustrated! Banzai!

Nyoka:

Speaking of the girls and cars, there is much lovely genie magick in the air of late, between The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco is the genie in the Toyota RAV4 commercials,  stunning fashion model Hannah Davis as the genie in the DirecTV commercials, and the eternally beautiful Barbara Eden http://www.barbaraeden.com who appurred in her iconic Jeannie costume at the AIDS LIFE 2013 Life Ball charity event in Vienna, Austria!

Becca:

Meanwhile our favorite Jedi Ahsoka Tano, Yoda and Plo Koon appurr on the cover of Star Wars The Clone Wars magazine #18! Purrincess Leia and her brother Luke appurr upon the cover of Geek vol. 2 #1, and her mommy Padme graces the cover of Star Wars Insider  #142! I do not know if she has the genie or Jedi powers, but actress Catherine Kresge is the charming spokespurrson in the recent Xerox commercials!

Mary Nyan:

It has been the season fro the dragons in the TV commercials too, such as Snapdragon for Sprint, Danerys’s cute widdle Dragon commercial for Time-Warner Cable, the fire breathing dragon with the Soldiers and the UFO in another DirecTV commercial, and the dragon in the trailer for the Dragon Age Inquisition video game. It has Morrigan in it too! Oh oh and speaking of the giant reptilians, there is a T-Rex with the soldiers, barbarians, wolves, police cars and the choppurrs in the Samsung Smart TV too!

Mike:

I like the Mike’s Lemonade commercial set in the bar with the masked cult, the ninja, the old sailor, the villains, and Koolio! I’m intrigued by the commercials for the remake of The Tomorrow People, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and the trailers for Much Ado About Nothing, Pacific Rim, RED 2, Kick Ass 2, and Thor: The Dark World! Now I will turn The Mew back over to Vonny who will start our

Comic Book & Manga Reviews

with her review of Hero Cats of Stellar City #0!

Yvonne:

Arigato, nya! We discovered many wonderful mew comics at the Heroes Con, such as Hero Cats #0 at the table of Galactic Quest http://www.galacticquest.com who also publish Galaxy Man ccomics http://www.galaxymancomics.com, nya! Hero Cats is set not only in the same Stellar City of Galaxy Man, but under the same roof, nya! That is because Cassiopeia the Orange & White kitty of the literary purrsuits is the pet of astronomer Stanley Quest & his daughter Suzy, who sneak out of their observatory home as  who sneak out as the costumed supurr heroes Galaxy Man and Cosmic Girl, nya!

They make the brief appurrance, nya! When Stanley’s astronaut wife Amelia went missing on the Mars mission, her author aunt gave them Cassiopeia, who addresses the readers in the delightful first – purrson kitty dialogue, to narrate Hero Cats #0, nya!

The issue is purriced $3.99 and has beautiful 22 full color pages compurrised of the “Welcome to the World” tale of the nekos, plus the author’s illustrated cordial greeting page & the ad for Galaxy Man, nya! It was written & lettered by Kyle Puttkammer, drawn & colored by Marcus Williams, inked & embellished by Ryan Sellers, nya! It is available in the different covers such as the great tri-gatefold wraparound cover, which Kyle & Marcus autographed at the con, nya! Cassiopeia is so sweet and endearing and tells us how she was adopted, and about the other cats, Midnight the Black cat vigilante of the night, Belle telepathic Siamese cat, Roco the tough Gray gym cat, Ace the White military family cat, and Rocket the odd engineer Tabby who may or may not be the alien cat, nya! It is the purretty, charming & amewsing introductory comic book, nya!

The supurrbly drawn characters, critters, mecha & scenery are all rendered in the beautiful rich bright color, including a a couple of full-page pics, nya! The cats are so wonderfully posed & expurressive, and we get to glimpse the bit of their lifestyles & adventures, as they fight the skeletal dinosaurs, insectoid mecha, flying saucers & criminal robots, when they are not  playing the video games, the night mini golf, purrching atop the cars at the drive – in theatre, and catching the tasty fish, nya! I purrticularly liked the scenes of Cassiopeia with the author, the books, and her Tuxedo Cat brother who hangs out at the mewsstand, nya! I will give Hero Cats #0 the high purraise and hope that it will be the big hit, nya! Nextly we will go from the kitties to the ponies of

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #8, nya!

Yvonne:

Arigato, nya! We love the pony cartoon, the toys, and the pony comic books from IDW have been among my favoritest for several months, nya! Oh gosh I can’t believe it has already been over the 3/4 year since IDW, started to publish the purrinted pony purriodicals, nya! Issue #8 is purriced $3.99 with the uninterrupted 22 page tale followed by the 10 pages of the ads, nya! There are the 3 mane variant covers plus about 7 other exclusive covers, nya! I have Cover A by Amy Mebberson, nya! Cover B is by Tony Fleecs, cover C is by Andy Price who was at Heroes Con, and the 5 other rarer retailer exclusive covers were purrduced for Hot Topic, Larry’s Comics, Emerald Knights, JetPack Comics, and the conventions, nya!

Displayed on the inside covers are the small pics of the different cover art, nya! The tale was written by Heather Nuhfer, illustrated by Amy Mebberson, lettered by Neil Uyetake, colored by Heather Breckel, and edited by Bobby Curnow who all did the supurr great job, nya! This issue concludes the tale begun in issue #5, when the ponies suffered from the bad dreams, and Rarity was rustled away to The Moon by the Nightmares, so the rescue expurrdition was mounted, but she was brainwashed to become the reborn evil Nightmare Moon, who invades Ponyville, nya! The tale stars Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rarity; Celestia, Luna, Spike, Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo, nya!

There are brief appurrances in the town by Granny Smith, Big Macintosh, Zecora, Trixie, Dr. Hooves, Derpy, the Wonderbolts, the Cake family and the many other ponies, nya! Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake are so cute, nya! Also defending Ponyville are Angel the bunny, Gumby the gator, Tank the turtle, Opalescence the kitty, Winona the dog, Owlowiscious the owl, and the hummingbird, nya! Fluttershy also befriended the cute widdle moon bunny Buffy while in the lunar purrison, and Spike’s infiltration of the castle was assisted by the moon slugs, nya! Some of my favorite parts are Pinkie Pie’s wiggle & hopping, Apple Bloom’s determination, Nightmare Moon’s narcissistic comments, and Spike’s crafty plans to free his friends, nya!

I also liked Angel bunny’s sad-eyed ruse, Granny Smith’s karate clop kata, Zecora’s confident canter, and Dr. Hooves with his screwdriver, but it was the purrticularly poignant Luna tale, nya! She had the sad lament, the fight scene, the joyful rebound, and the big 2/3 page panel, nya! This was another supurrb issue with the purrfect plot, pace, dialogue, the pony poses, gestures, expurressions, the details and  the colors that so extremely faithful in the visual style, the tempo and the spirit of the animated TV series, nya! I also appurrove of how the ads are all placed after the uninterrupted  tale, which is how I wish all publishers did it, and I gave this issue the grade of the “A” as in Apple Bloom, nya! Nyow here is Tara-chan to discuss

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Micro-Series #4 & 5, nya!

Tara-chan:

Arigato onee-chan, nya! This series from IDW focuses upon the different pony purr issue; the purrevious ponies were Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, and – and #4 is Fluttershy’s issue, nya! It is is purriced $3.99 with the 22 page tale followed by the 10 pages of the mews and – and the ads. all sammiched betwixt the different covers, nya! There are the 3 mane covers plus the 5 other exclusive covers which are all so purretty, nya! I have the “Snow White” homage cover A by Amy Mebberson, cover B is by Tony Fleecs, cover C is by Sabrina Alberghetti, and – and the 5 others were available at certain stores such as Double Midnight, Larry’s Comics, and – and Jetpack Comics, nya!

The tale was written by Barbara Randall Kesel, illustrated by Tony Fleecs, lettered by Neil Uyetake, and – and edited by Bobby Curnow who all faithfully capture the look and – and the spirit of the pony show in the comics medium, nya! Fluttershy is the kind, shy pony with the Yellow coat, Pink mane & tail, Blue eyes, butterfly cutie marks, who loves animals such as her widdle pet bunny Angel, nya. In the animated series she is voiced by Andrea Libman who also voices the hypurr manic Pinkie Pie, nya! In this tale, Fluttershy and – and Angel are out for the pleasant stroll when she reacts in the panic to the sign for the big art show, nya! This seems to be the odd reaction, as she nips the sign and – and flees back home to her secret extreme knitting parlor, nya!

It is the glorious reveal across the impurressive two – page spurread as she gleefully flies around all of her knitted creations, nya! Oh, nyow I want the ball of yarn to play with, nya! However she wrestles with the emotions because she is purroud of her artistry but fears it will be scoffed, nya! She enters the art show in disguise and – and I think her huge complex knitted sculpture of the pony and – and the butterflies the breathtaking masterpiece, but the mean art snobs arrive to berate it, nya! They are the critics who offer the discouraging, unconstructive insults, but when Fluttershy tries to sneak away, but then Rarity sees through the disguise, nya! She offers the support for the art, but poor Fluttershy is so overwhelmed and – and confused, nya!

I will not spoil what happens in the final four pages, but I thought this was another amewsing poignant issue with all of the purrfect pony ingredients nya! In addition to the spurread and – and the unveil of the sculpture, I purrticularly liked the purretty Ponyville scene, the expanse of the art show, Rarity’s “couture sizing sense”, and the final four pages, which include the impurressive full-page pic, nya! I also appurrove of the layout with the ads all after the uninterrupted tale, and I give this issue the “A” as in Angel bunny, nya! Nyow I will discuss issue #5 which is the Pinkie Pie issue, nya! It has the same purrice, the page count, letterer & editor, and – and the artists for covers A through C, but it was written by Ted Anderson, illustrated by Ben Bates, nya!

Also the other 8 variant covers for issue #5 were purrduced for Larry’s Comics, Jetpack Comics, Double Midnight, The Source, the cons, and – and North Carolina’s own Chapel Hill Comics, nya! In this pony tale, Pinkie Pie is so thrilled to win the tickets to the circus starring the great clown Ponyacci, nya! She invites Twilight Sparkle to go with her but upon the arrival they meet the sad Orange pony, she graciously tries to cheer up by giving him the ticket, but he turns out to be Ponyacci, nya. He has the comedy-mask cutie mark, but thinks he is too old for the purrformances, so Pinkie Pie decides convince him not to quit, nya! This results in the very dazzling colorful montages full of the glitter, the confetti, the balloons, the mewsic and the pony tricks, nya!

Pinkie Pie goes all out to purrsuade him to continue, but I do not wish to spoil the ending, nya! It is yet another merry poignant pony tale with the full – page montages and – and in the two-page spurread, nya! The poses, pace and- and the compurrsitions capture Pinkie Pie’s extreme manic energy, her gleeful gusto, and – and the hop, nya! There are also the amewsing scene when she is in Spike’s shopping wagon with the fresh purroduce, and – and I will give this issue the “A” as in Angel too, nya! Another Angel is is Faith’s vampire friend, so nyow we will go from the little pony comics to the Dark Horse comics as Nya-sensei to tells us about the LUNA MOTH, NYA!!! (the distracted catgirl with the camera scampurrs after the beautiful Green moth of the 4.5″ wingspan)

Yvonne:

TARA-CHAN, NYA!

Bun:

There she goes again, heehee!

Elizabeth:

She can’t resist the nature photo oppurrtunity!

Trini-chan:

It is good that she has the entomological interest!

Nyanko:

Hai I suspect she will become the scientist or the veterinarian!

Nyoka:

Well sis, while she is in the purrsuit of the lovely lepidoptera, purrhaps we should purroceed with your review of

Angel & Faith #22 & 23

Nyanko:

Hai! We have been enjoying the canonical Buffy, Angel & Faith comics from Dark Horse, which are so faith-ful in the balance of humor, drama & slayage, the writing & art, the character development, mythology & continuity! Issue #22 is purriced at $2.99, with the choice of 2 covers- one by Steve Morris, and the other by the issues’ artist Rebekah Isaacs & colorist Dan Jackson! Inside the covers are the 22 page tale “What You Want, Not What You Need Part 2” plus 2 pages of the readers’ & editor’s comments and 4 pages of the ads. It was written by Christos Gage, excecutively purrduced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, edited Scott Allie & Sierra Hahn assistanly edited by Feddye Lins, designed by Justin Crouch & published by Michael Richardson! This issue includes Angel, Faith, her estranged traineee Nadira, Giles, his aunts Sophronia & Lavina, sorcerer Alasdair Coames, the demon villain Whistler, and his evil allies Nash & Pearl!

Purreviously, the villains raided Alasdair’s mansion to purrloin his valuable magickal artifacts, thus interfering with the ritual to resurrect Giles, which purrtially succeeded, but he is not quite right, having been revived as the kid body and not the adult body, although he is mentally the same old Giles! My favorite parts are the resurrection, their wide-eyed reactions, the awkward moments between Faith & Giles, the drinking scene, the winged kitty & pixies purrched upon the chair, and wondering what sneaky Nadira will do next up on the rooftop! I like Sophronia & Lavina and I wish would get their own spin off issues! Issue #23 has the same creative team for the 22 page “What You Want, Not What You Need Part 3”, plus the pages of the comments and the ads, and wastes no time in resuming the melee, as Angel & Faith duel Nash & Pearl on the rooftops, whilst Whistler focuses on his magickal endgame spell! It is the brutal bloody battle with the trash talk to match the furious action and the fiery energy!

Nadira joins the fight against the villains, so while she and Faith are busy with Nash & Pearl, Angel is able to duel Whistler who transforms into his true taller horned demon form! Giles, Sophronia, Lavina, & Alasdair arrive the bit later to help, bringing more team work and the amewsing banter, but it is still the intense, emotional battle with the shocking parts! My favorite parts are Nadira attacking Nash, lots of powerful emotion from her and Faith, the banter betwixt Angel & Whistler, and the arrival of Giles, Sophronia, Lavina, & Alasdair in the car full of the weapons & magickal items! Overall for both issues I liked the plot, pace & dialogue, the supurrb portraiture, expurressions, poses & detail of the art, the colors, fonts, FX and the narrative quality of the panels! These issues were terrific with the whimsical, comedic, poignant, sad, sentimental, surpurrising, thrilling & shocking moments which I will give the grade of the “A” as in Angel! I assume that these events are happening at about the same time as

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #22!

Nyanko:

Buffy has been amongst our favoritest comics of the past few years, but we are so nervous about poor Dawn’s plight! This 28 page issue is purriced $2.99 and includes the 24 page tale of “The Core Part Two” plus the 2 pages of the readers’ & editor’s comments, and the 2 pages of the ads. The tale was scripted by Andrew Chambliss, pencilled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Dexter Vines, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, designed by Justin Crouch, edited by Sierra Hahn & Scott Allie, and assitantly edited Freddye Lins! We got to chat with Georges Jeanty & Dexter Vines again at Heroes Con! It is available in the choice of 2 different covers, one by Phil Noto and the other by Jeanty, Vines & Madsen!  Buffy, Willow, Xander are also in England, to confront D’Hoffryn and the other demons at The Deeper Well site in order to find the magickal cure to save Dawn, who is purrotected by Spike, Billy, Anaheed & Andrew back home in San Francisco

If they don’t get the magick from the well soon enough, Dawn and all memories of will fade away! Buffy is so agile and acrobatic as she dives into the demons with her scythe, while Willow magickally zaps them from above! The slayage is not going well, until Illyria & Koh arrive in the nick of time! Unfortunately Xander is not helping at all, and to make things worse he is sending updates to the villains Simone & Severin who are are fighting a few demons too as they try to enter The Well from its other entrance in New Zealand! Out of despurration to save Dawn, Xander went behind Buffy’s back to assist the enemy, who claimed they could save both Dawn and Severin’s girlfriend by using the well’s magick to travel back in time. Back at Andrew’s home in San Francisco, my favortiest scene in the issue is the very sweet and charming chat between Dawn & Spike, but nyow Spike is starting to forget things about her too as she withers away, and he tries to record the information about Dawn while he can!

Anaheed & Billy grab bags full of weapons and head for Santa Rosita to help Katie & Devon against the zompires, Their side-story will be continued in Dark Horse Presents #25 – 27! As mewsual the Buffy comic has the purrfectest mix of the humor, action, mythology & drama, the excellent plot, pace & dialogue, the supurrbly drawn portraiture, expurressions, poses & slayage, with the great fonts, colors & FX! There are lots of great bits amongst the details, from Willow’s eyes getting darker as she grins and slays, the yummy looking chocolate chunk cookies that Andrew baked, and his decor including the cute fanged plushy from Season 8! Oh I want the plushy and the cookies too, but I should change the subject away from the cravings! The readers’ & editor’s comments were very fascinating as mewsual, so this was yet another consistently great issue of Buffy, which I will give the grade of the “A” as in Angel! A is also for the Aspen, which Ilyana wants to tell us about in her review of  Michael Turner’s

Fathom: The Elite Saga #1 & 2 (Plot spoiler warning)!

Ilyana:

Hai! This weekly 5 issue mini series is part of the 15th anniversary of the Fathom comics created the late Michael Turner! initially published by Top Cow Comics, then 5 years later by Aspen Comics, which was founded by Turner, and co-owned by Peter Steigerwald & purresident Frank Mastromauro! The company is named after Fathom’s Dr. Aspen Matthews, the marine biologist & supurr heroine who has the aquatic powers, the sexy clothes, and gets caught in the politics & warfare between the surface humans, the undersea civilization called The Blue, and the various other threats! It is sad that Michael Turner is no longer with us but his creations such as Fathom and Soulfire are in the good hands of his friends who we met at their booth at Heroes Con! We liked his Witchblade and Supergirl tales too!

issue #1 has 28 pages compurrised of the 8 pages of the ads & the 20 page tale “The Loss of Innocence” scripted by editor in chief Vince Hernandez, who co-plotted the tale with J. T. Krul & David Wohl; pencilled by Ken Marion, digitally inked by director of design & purrduction Mark Roslan! It was colored by Jordi Escuin Llorach, Kyle Ritter & Steigerwald; and lettered by editorial assistant Josh Reed with the font by Dreamer Design! The purrduction was by Roslan, Reed & Steigerwald with assistant Chaz Riggs! It is available in the 4 covers, Cover A by Ken Marion & Steigerwald, Cover B by Talent Caldwell & Steigerwald, the less common retailer incentive Cover C by Turner, Weems & Smith, and the San Diego Comic-Con Cover D which is limited to just the 250 copies by Benitez & Steigerwald!

The tale takes place after the Worlds of Aspen 2013 issue, which is after Fathom vol. 4 #9 & Kiani vol. 2 #4! Nyow for the taste of the plot! Killian is the commander of The Blue, husband of Anya, father of Kiani & her baby sister Anika. Kiani is the dissident leader with the aquatic supurr powers, but she got caught and impurrisoned by the Elite Council. She and her daddy are not happy about this, and Anya has fled the undersea city with Anika to purrotect her from the violent situations! While Killian has the discussions with Kiani and councilman Alcer, Anya is attacked by the thugs who are slain by the mysterious masked group who kidnap Anika! Several days later, Aspen is at her friend Tyler’s beach house in California, when they see the TV mews that a certain lady has surfaced in search of Aspen!

It is the nice house, with the couch that could set about 16 people in front of the huge TV! There are 3 impurressive full – page pics, and Killian has the fast sub of the sleek futuristic, organic quality! I like the use of the color & light, from the bioluminescence of the Blue architecture and the iridescent Purrple-ish sheen of the kidnappurrs, to the houses by the moonlight ocean! Kiani wears the Purrple Bikini, Anya wears the Mauve gown with the White fingerless gloves, Aspen wears the Red Short Sleeve Ruffled Crop Top and her mewsual choker, Tyler wears Green sleeveless criss-cross halter-neck top, and there is ample exotic Blue couture & jewelry! It is the briskly paced tale, with the impalements & dismemberments as the thugs are sliced & diced, and the terrifying situation of the stolen baby!

Issue #2 has the same credits, except that Kyle Ritter is listed as the sole colorist! It has 3 three different covers; Cover A depicting Kira by Marion & Steigerwald, Cover B depicting Kiani, Kira & Yoren by Caldwell & Steigerwald, and the less common Killian Cover C by Turner, Weems & Smith! When Anya rises from the San Diego surf, she is hostilely met by the soldiers, but Aspen purrotects her with the wall of water in the full-page pic! They search the ocean for Anika and go to Aspen’s old explorer friend Bana for help abaord his Lion Fish – like sub! He deduces that the culpurrits are the Valorik Pirates, so they go to the vast undersea bazars of Mozskil, which is unveiled in the great two – page spurread! Meanwhile Killian angrily searches for Anya & Anika in the beautiful undersea city of Aescylot!

He attacks the guards but their ruler Kira (formerly known as Terza) confronts his attitude & mistaken blame! She has the sexy spiny Red crustacean-like bikini armor and the glowy double blade! Bana correctly guessed where Anika has been spirited to, but then Aspen is attacked by escaped Kiani, who like her dad has angrily blamed & attacked the wrong purrson! In the full-page cliffhanger pic, she wears her Purrple crustacean – like cut-out tanga maillot and carries the glowy Blue sword! The last time she and Aspen met was in the climactic final battle of Fathom Volume Three, so they will have the rematch in The Elite Saga #3! Oh I hope that Kiani will listen to her mom, and that they will all unite to safely rescue Anika soon! Nyow for more of the Aspen goodness Myayr would like to discuss the

Aspen Splash 2013 Swimsuit Spectacular!

Bubble Gun #1!

Mary Nyan:

The 1st issue is purriced just $1 and has the 28 full color pages compurrised of the 8 ads, 2 character purrofile pages, and the 20 page tale of  “Finders, Keepers” written by Mark Roslan, drawn by Mike Bowden, colored by David Curiel, lettered by Josh Reed, edited by Frank Mastromauro & Vince Hernandez! The issue is available in the different covers, with the main edition cover by Bowden & Curiel, covers B & D by Bowden & Steigerwald, cover C the blank version for the original sketch, cover E is the 10th anniversary edition, and cover F is the Heroes Con cover limited to 250 copies, depicting Molli with the animation cel-like shading by Khary Randolph & Emilio Lopez! We were lucky & grateful to get the Heroes Con edition with the stiffer outer cover, signed by Mark at their booth!

Molli is the genki peppy gung-ho younger member of the cyber merc team lead by her smart older sister Devyn in this cyberpunk tale set in the year 2113! The rest of their team are Zuse the savvy older mentor, Roman the huge burly brawny chap, and Kyo the quieter pilot & mechanic with the crush on Molli! They purrtake of the exciting capurrs in the spurrawling gleaming colorful city of Neocapital! The tale begins as the gang of Riggs, Oleg & Caprice break into the Inotech skyscrapurr to purrloin a vault containing the purrize worth the huge fortune, but they are ambushed by Devyn’s team who get away with the vault! They leave the incapacitated rivals for the cops to appurrehend! Later Devyn’s team celebrates with the fun time at the club, but Molli wishes her older sister were not so purrotective!

She wants the real gun but for nyow she has the Bubble Gun which fires the huge sticky gooey blob to trap the target! They are appurroached by Craine Drowe who is an enforcer for the Vitadrone corpurration, who is interested in Devyn’s purrestigious haul. This raises the suspicions back at the team’s hideout, as they try to determine the the incredibly valuable contents of the vault, which Vitadrone intends to retrieve at any cost, but I will not reveal the contents of the vault, or further spoil the plot! I love the character designs, and the bright gleaming colorful look of the sleek sexy fashions, coiffures, mecha and the architecture, and I purrticularly liked the views of the urban skyline, the Inotech vault room, and the night club which all have a great sense of the shiny futuristic enormity!

There are lots of glowy luminous images, purrojections & Devyn’s translucent cloaking effect! She has the lovely caramel skin tone, the two tone mohawk, the Violet eyes & lips, and the lithe abs! Molli has the sassy cute atttude to match her colorful appurral and Bright Blue eyes! There was one scene that disturbed me though, and that purrtains to what Caprice did to the eyes of poor Miss Gates the gynoid at  Inotech! I hope that she will be repaired and spurruced up so that we might see her again! It would be so nice if she could then be hired by Zuse to work at the team’s hide-out, and purrhaps she and Devyn could appurr in a future Aspen Swimsuit issue like Molli did! That is all for our Aspen reviews…but I see that Tara-chan has returned from her photo expurrdition in time for Mike’s review of

Red Sonja: Unchained #3 (plot spoiler warning)!

Tara-chan:

Gomenasai, nya!

Mike:

Oh it is all right and we hope to see the photos! Sonja is one of our favoritest characters, purrhaps best known for her lovely Red hair, her peerless prowess in combat, and her iconic metal bikini! She has worn other outfits, including the plunging short Blue fur outfit made from the pelt which she skinned from the evil demon Bhamothes in the Red Sonja: Blue one-shot which we reviewed for August 2011! In that comic published by Dynamite Entertainment, she was hired to rescue the kidnapped villager from a sorcerer’s sacrificial ritual to Bhamothes, but her bikini top was damaged so she skinned the demon and made his pelt into the garment! That was ironic twist for the demon, but more irony happened later at the tavern when the rescued villager was killed by Sonja in the sword fight!

In Unchained #1 she left the village and later on the road she met the witch Merisan after slaying her treacherous comrades, but didn’t realize that the demon’s spirit lingered in the fur to crave blood and influence her! Merisan told Sonja of the nearby tomb of Queen Gheta of Ilazarr, which she searched for treasure in issue #2. Gheta seems to be an homage to another famous warrior woman of the comics, Ghita of Alizarr! After the encounter in the tomb, Sonja doesn’t realize that the fur sops up her opponents’ blood to renew the demon! That brings us to Red Sonja: Unchained #3, which is priced $3.99, rated Teen+ due to the skimpy attire, the language, and the bloody combat violence. It is available in the choice of the 4 variant covers, 3 by Mel Rubi and 1 by Walter Giovani!

The issue has 30 pages comprised of 22 page story written by Peter Brett, pencilled by Jack Jadsen, colored by Marcelo Pinto, lettered by Simon Bowland and edited by Joseph Rybandt; plus 3 pages of ads, a page of the Dynamite mews, the 2 page peek at the Lords of Mars comic book & intermew with its writer Arvid Nelson; and the 2 page peek at the Lady Rawhide comic book & intermew with its writer Eric Trautmann! The latter intermew is accompanied by the full page pic of Lady Rawhide by Joseph Michael Linsner, who we met at Heroes Con! Lady Rawhide is another Redhead in the sexy costume with the sword, and Linsner is perhaps best known for his famous sultry Redhead goddess character Dawn of the Cry for Dawn series… but I digress!

Unchained #3 begins with the magnificent full – page view of the huge library, on which Sonja perches on high with bow & arrow, ready to snipe the treacherous priest who Merison has business with! The priest covets the ribald book about Gheta, but Sonja’s arrows embarrass and thwart his swindling intent & threats! This is the amewsing scene with Sonja’s first – person narration in the Red, which lends a bit of dark cynical humor amidst the very lavish detail of the architecture and clothes! The colors are so rich such as the sheen of Sonja’s hair, the luster of her lips, and the gleam in her green eyes as she sees the bounty hunter who has snuck up upon her! This is another bit of irony, since there price on her head is for killing the lad who she was initially hired to rescue!

They wind up brawling upon the moonlit rooftop in the nice wide panoramic panels full of the intricate details! Several amazing panels later, she;s evaded the rest of the bounty hunters to reach Merison’s carriage on the street! Merison’s home is brimming with the many books, scrolls, statues & ornate decor where they study the Bhamothes legends! There is so much sumptuous detail in all the fabric folds of the linens as Sonja fitfully slumbers, but she awakens to realize she can’t shed the garment which is magickally stuck, and that the bounty hunters have broken into the home! Even though Sonja is barefoot, unarmed, and trying to purrotect Merison, she is smarter, faster, more agile & skilled than the burly opponents, who prove to be a dismembering threat to each other!

Much of her enemies’ blood is spilled in the supurrb two-page spread, which would usually be good for Sonja, but in further unfortunate irony, the splatter soaks the blood thirsty fur enough to transform Sonja into the demon in the amazing full – page, body – swapping cliffhanger pic! The full page pics on the first & last pages nicely bookend the chapter, which has such beautiful, meticulous detailed art, rich sumptuous coloring, a good mix of dark humor and violent sword & sorcery action, and I can’t wait to see how Sonja will get out of the demon and bounty jam in issue #4! It’s a good time for a Red Sonja fan, and I’m also looking forward to her forthcoming series written by Gail Simone! Now here’s Trini-chan to start our DC Comics reviews with her review of

The Wake #1 & 2!

Trini-chan:

Arigato! The Wake is a new 10 issue science fiction mini-series of the dark tone from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint! The spooky oceanic high tech tale is suggested for the mature readers, because of the scary gory scenes and the bit of nudity! issue #1 has the 32 pages, consisting of the 24 page tale, the credits page, the 6 pages of the ads, and the page of author Kurt Busiek’s musings! It is is priced $2.99 and it was written by Scott Snyder, drawn by Sean Murphy, colored by Matt Hollingsworth, lettered by Jared K. Fletcher, edited by Mark Doyle and assistantly edited by Sara Miller, with the choice of the cover art by Sean Murphy & Jordie Bellaire or the variant cover art by Andy Kubert & Brad Anderson! The first issue’s nonlinear chapters are set in the three time periods, mostly in the present day (I assume), which is framed by the first chapter which occurs 200 years into the future, and the 4th chapter which occurs 100,000 years ago!

The future chapter is a bit cryptic, as a girl hang-glides across a partially submerged city to rendezvous with a dolphin wearing various gadgets, until they hastily retreat from a huge tidal wave! The present section focuses upon Cetologist Dr. Lee Archer who investigates an undersea mystery! Formerly employed by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, she is on her boat examining a whale off the coast of Washington when Homeland Security Agent Cruz arrives in need of her consultation on the recorded mysterious undersea sounds. She is not happy with the government situation, an apparently her marital separation, but when Cruz offers to help get custody of her son Parker, she agrees to join the expedition to Alaska. Hours later they arrive at the base camp to meet the expedition’s other members who are experts in the various studies, board the amazing submarine to descend into the depths to a secret oil rig on the ocean floor!

As soon as they arrive, a scary incident occurs and she witnesses something quite bizarre! It is a dangerous live aquatic humanoid creature they have captured! That creepy cliffhanger brings us to issue #2 which has the 32 pages, consisting of the 19 page tale, the credits page, the 11 pages of the ads, and the page of editor Shelly Bond’s musings. The tale jumps back in time again, to 5.1 million years ago when the megalodon shark goes for the purrehistoric pachyderm purrey, but becomes the big catch of the aquatic humanoid tribe! Oh I can’t blame them for wanting that seafood feast! Back in the purresent time, the team discusses, theorizes & examines the captive, and then we see the flashback to three days purrior of how the creature was caught while the divers were tangling with giant jelly fish! Dr. Archer has her own flashbacks and hallucination about her son, but this seems to be the telepathic affect on them by the deadly humanoid!

Issue #2 book – ends with more of that cat-aclysmic future incident, but I should not further spoil the chilling plot! Dr. Archer seems the smart &  likable protagonist who has tried to survive the raw deals, there is lots of amazing looking mecha, and the very spooky situation! It is suggested for the mature readers, and definitely not for the widdle kitties due to the violence and some nudity! Adding to the eerie ambience is the use of color & light, with the limited chromatic palette and lots of deep shadowy Black areas. The visual style of the narrative is quite interesting, using several large panoramic panels across two pages. My only complaint is that I wish the tale was uninterrupted, and that all of the ads were to follow the tale. It has the very cinematic storytelling, and the nonlinear method greatly adds to the intrigue of the plot, which leaves me craving the next issue as well as the shark filet! Now for my next Vertigo comic book report I wish to discuss

Fairest #16!

Trini-chan:

Fairest is the spin-off series of the DC / Vertigo Comics’ Fables created by Bill Willingham, about the characters of myth & lore who reside secretly among the mortal populace, and Fairest spotlights some of the legendary heroines! In issue #15 the tale of “The Return of the Maharaja” began, starring heroic Nalayani whose village in India was attacked by the wild animals and the brigands so she traveled to the palace to get help, but the current Maharaja is Prince Charming, who would rather help himself to her! The tale is suggested for the mature readers, due to the bits of sexuality and the bloody violence of the animal attacks and injuries! issue #16 has the 32 pages, consisting of the 20 page tale, the 7 pages of the ads, the page of editor Shelly Bond’s musings, and the 4 page preview of The Wake!

It was written by Sean E. Williams, pencilled by Stephen Sadowski, colored by Andrew Dollhouse, lettered by Todd Klein, assistantly edited by Gregory Lockard, inked by inked by Phil Jimenez, (pages 1-13) & Dan Green (pages 14-20), with the consultation by Fables’ creator Bill Willingham and the cover art by Adam Hughes! He was at Heroes Con again! Perhaps y’all have seen the lovely sketch he did of Catwoman which is on our mewseum of art? Nalayani is the brave, tough lovely heroic defender of her village, with the gleaming Golden eyes which are as sharp as the arrows she has for the enemies, and her wits to keep around the amorous Maharaja! He might seem the cad and likes his harem & his job, but he also loves the challenges, and does not hesitate to bravely take the risks and tries to help!

In fact, he rushes into harm’s way when the bloodthirsty pack of wild Dole canines attacks his camp, and despite injuries he joins Nalayani on horseback to go after them! Visually he reminds me a bit of Star Trek’s Will Riker! It is the tale of the beauty and the beasts, with the handsome Charming, the beautiful Nalayani, the clothes, palatial architecture & decor, with plenty of animals such as the horses, the Dole, the elephants, cows, and the gator! who wants to chomp Nalayani for suppurr, but hopefully she and Charming will dine on the gator meat instead! They have already been chomped by the Dole, and it is pretty graphic with the blood, maiming & dismemberments. One particularly painful sad moment is when the poor horse’s legs break, and Charming uses his last bullet to end that misery.

There is an impressive two-page spread depicting the Dole attack upon the camp amongst the palms, as the sorcerer watches and the horses & elephants are spooked under the full moonlight! I like the fonts used for the dialogue, narration & sounds too! The characters, critters & scenery are so exquisitely drawn, and the characters’ expressions are superb, whether they are amused, lustful, angered, pained or surprised- not just Nalayani & Charming, but also the sorcerer, the servants, the harem & villagers! Speaking of the villagers, they wonder if / when they might be attacked again, or if that legendary tiger Shere Khan might even show up, so now I am wondering about that too! That is all of my Vertigo comic books report, but we have more DC Comics on tap, as Petra tells us about

Ame-Comi Girls #4!

Petra:

Arigato, nya! Ame-Comi Girls stars the alternate versions of DC heroines & villainesses based upon the line of anime-style statues which we collect, nya! It seems to be of the different Earth where the women and not the men are the main heroes, nya. The tale began as the 5 issue mini-series which continued into this ongoing series so I suppose issue #4 is technically the 9th issue, nya! Purreviously, many of the heroines & villainesses got into the brawls, but then they were briefly united against Brainiac who almost destroyed The Earth  just like she destroyed the planet Krypton, nya! They also had to fight Supergirl who was possessed by Brainiac’s Black Kryptonite, nya! Brainiac was defeated but Supergirl has remained in the stasis until she can be cured, while Power Girl, Wonder Woman & Colonel Steve Trevor decided to form the international heroic league to protect the Earth in case other global or extraterrestrial cat-astrophes happened again, nya!

The Manhunter Girls notified the Guardians of Oa about Brainiac’s attack, so they have sent the Green Power Ring to Earth, to be worn by Chinese girl Jade Yifei as the new Green Lantern of Sector 2814, in the nick of time to defeat the villainess known Flying Guillotine, nya! Ironically, astronaut Carol Ferris was possessed by the alien Star Sapphire and then jealously attacked her old boyfriend Jimmy Olsen and Power Girl who he is now dating, nya!  This brings us up to issue #4, which resumes the fight between Power Girl & Star Sapphire! The issue is priced $3.99, has the 40 glossy pages consisting of the 30 page tale, plus the 8 pages of the ads, the credits page, and the DC Mews page, nya. Ame-Comi Girls has been drawn by the various artists, and has been consistently written Jimmy Palmiotti who we met at the con & Justin Gray, nya! “The Chosen Part Two” was pencilled by Eduardo Francisco (pages 1-20) & Derec Donovan (pages 21-30), nya!

It was lettered by Wes Abbot, colored by Randy Mayor, edited by Jim Chadwick, assistantly edited by Sarah Gaydos, and has the cover art by Jonboy Meyers & Randy Mayor, nya! Well, on the planet Oa, Tomar Re of the Green Lantern Corps is told the origin of Sinestra, an archaeologist who discovered the ancient Black Power Ring that was forged as an anti-Brainac weapon, but the ring possessed her mind and she raised the zombie army for the war with the Corps! They managed to defeat her, dispose of the ring in the negative universe, and exile her into the antimatter universe, but nyow she has been possessed again, this time by the Parallax entity in the Yellow Ring of Qward! She then lead a qward armada to the negative universe and found the Black ring, so nyow she has both rings and wants to destroy the multiverse, nya! On Earth, Jade detects this situation after helping Powergirl to defeat Carol and free her mind from that Sapphire, nya!

Jade flies off to purrtrol the sector and Carol goes home, but it is the busy time for Power Girl whose dates with Jimmy Olsen keep getting interrupted, as she winds up in the rematch with her roused cousin Supergirl, nya! Fortunately Powergirl has another partner, as Professor Avril Palmer alias The Atom shrinks to the microscopic size inside Supergirl to rid her of the Kryptonite, but first Avril has to get past the microscopic Brainac drones, nya! It is the issue full of the ladies possessed by the alien powers and the team-ups for Power Girl, and hopefully they will be able to organize the league soon, because Sinestra and the armada are on the way, nya! There is so much going on in the briskly paced tale across the time & space, nya! I liked the dialogue such as Carol’s taunts & explanations, Jade’s ring analyzing the Sapphire & Qward threats, Avril wanting to examine the Kryptonite, and Power Girl discussing the mewsic she mixes as the fortress DJ, nya!

The scenic art is so beautiful, from the gleaming utopia of Metropolis, Kara’s futuristic home, and inside Supergir;s body, to the exotic planet Oa, the ancient ruins of Korugar, and he Qward mecha, nya! There are lots of dazzling FX, the great fonts, several half-page panels, and six full-page panels, three of which are rotated right for the wide scenes, nya!  I purrticularly love the character & the bright sexy costume designs, and the wonderfully rich, luminous coloring is another favorite aspect of the comic, which appurropurriately complements the  peppy, bright tone & overall sense of fun! nya! Ame-Comi Girls has continued to be one of our favorite DC titles since DC rebooted their line of comics about two years ago, I was very happy with this issue, and I will give it the grade of the “A” as in Avril The Atom, nya! Nyow for my next review of the female fun in the sequential art of the colorful manga style, I would like to say the few words about Jamie Jennings’s

Rose Slayer, nya!

Petra:

In the artist alley at Animazement (an anime con on Memorial Day Weekend here in North Carolina), just a couple of tables away from our friends Thais & Natalia was the Lavender Legend table Jamie Jennings http://winterlegend.com who is purrhaps best known for her exquisite web comics Winter Legend, Emerald Winter & Lavender Legend, nya! She also has the lovely gallery at DeviantArt http://emeraldwinter.deviantart.com, nya! This year, Animazement was the first stop on her whirlwind convention tour including A-kon, Colossalcon, and Animegacon, at which she sells her beautiful sketches, cards, purrints & books, nya! That includes her two mew Rose Slayer graphic novels, which were published in May and freshly purrinted not far from here in South Carolina, nya!

Rose Slayer is the gorgeous full – color manga – style web comic for the adults of ages 8+ only due to the very explicit nudity, sexuality, purrofanity, vampurric violence, so it is not for the widdle kitties, nya! I will keep the review tame and not describe the naughty details, but it is not only the beautifully rendered tale with the richly vibrant colors,  cel style shading, and the lavish fashions & scenic art, but it is the supurrnatural sex comedy with the peppy, purrky, playful quality with the amewsing dialogue and cute expurressions, nya! The plot purrtains to the romps in the castle of vampire queen Lavandula, which I think might be set in the 19th century / Regency purriod of Europe (but I could be wrong), as the local villagers of Teremaya send the various sacrifices and slayers her way, nya!

The villagers are the cowardly supurrstitous lot who intend to either appease or kill the vampire they blame for their purroblems, nya! In the purrequel book the Rose Slayer VampYou Collection, we see how  Lavandula met the four maidens who became her vampire friends in the maid costumes, nya! They include the lonely girl of the flaxen pigtails, the innocent investigator with the short Brown hair, the slayer with the Black pony tail who desires the powers, and the Redhead slave of rival vampire Alexandros, nya! Each was the unhappy mislead girl purrior to meeting he long Blonde haired Lavandula, but they are happier together as the lively quartet of the sweet vampire girls who love to play with their food, nya! Some of them still need the purractice with their magickal powers, nya!

In the 2nd book Rose Slayer Adult Vampire Comedy the next visitor to the castle is Felix the inexpurrienced blue-haired slayer who is there to slay the vamps, but the slayage is not his inexpurrience as the gleeful vamp maids have their way with him, nya! The VampYou Collection is the 6″ x 9″  trade papurrback compurrised of the 33 page tale plus the 3 pin up pics, and the latter volume is the 8.5″ x 11″ trade papurrback compurrised of the 31 page tale plus the 12 page gallery which is compurrised of the 11 full – page pics and the 2 half page pics, nya! The plot, joyful tone, supurrb art and alluring happy characters are so delightful, and I hope it is the big hit at the conventions for her, nya! OK I am all done with my reports so nyow I will turn The Mew over to Lizzy who will tell us about

GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class vol. 5, nya!

Elizabeth:

G.A. is is the fun manga published by Yen in the USA about the art student girls by Satoko Kiyuduki, who also authored Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro! It was made into the anime series which I want to see!  The main art student girls at Ayanoi High School are the absent – minded Kisaragi Yamaguchi with the Dark Brown hair & glasses, Miki Noda the fashionable socialite with the Light hair, Namiko Nozaki the older sister type with the medium Brown hair, and Tomokane the intense fiery spirited girl with the short Dark Blue-Green hair; and Miyabi Oomichi the smart quiet type with the long Black hair, who is nicknamed The Professor! Also appurring in this volume are teachers Usami – Sensei & Sasamoto – sensei, 2 boy students Homura & Uozumi, Awara the art club purresident, Nozaki the former art club purresident, Namiko’s older sister, Noda’s kitty Marshmellow, Suneko the kitty puppet, and Sanae the mannequin!

The characters and the slice – of – life plots & the art themes are so whimsical, mostly purresented in the 4 koma manga format with 2 columns of 4 panels purr page, although a several larger panels and the art facts peppurr Vol. 5! It has the 128 pages of the manga, mostly Black & White line & tone art, but it includes the several color pages and the cover art and the four pages of the translation notes! It was translated by Kaori Inoue, lettered by Lys Blakeslee, and purriced $12.99 in the USA & $13.99 in Canada! Volume 5 begins with the final assignments of the Spurring semester, on the eve of the Summertime, as they try to draw the various animals in the various styles & techniques and attend the  high school baseball tournyament! Miyabi & Mizubuchi are briefly trapped in the storage room, and then it is the Summertime of the cute clothes & humorous plots purrtaining to the seasonal colors and Miki’s lunch!

Tomokane cat sits for Noda, with Tomokane & Kisaragi as the tempurrary nekomimi in one panel with the costume ears & paws that Noda brought them! Then there is the fun at the park, the sketching expurrditions, the tropical theme party, fireworks, wearing yukatas to the festival, and the papurr mache kitsune mask! When Kisaragi & Noda find shelter from the late summer sun –  shower, they discuss the fox wedding legend, pose for the mysterious artist girl they meet and have the interesting dreams! To top off the volume as the Fall semester begins, they are visited by Nozaki – senpai and Namiko’s older sister eats all of the food in the fridge! Geijutsuka Art Design Class is purrfectly written & illustrated manga of the friends having fun as they learn more of the art amidst the life’s various purrsuits and I will give it the “A” grade! Nextly I would like to discuss another favorite manga which is also published by Yen,

Spice & Wolf vol. 8 (plot spoiler warning)!

Elizabeth:

Spice and Wolf is one of our favoritest anime & manga, and both are adaptations of the series of light novels originally published in Japan as Ookami To Koushinryou. For our review of  the anime DVDs please see the January 2010 & September 2011 Mews! It purrtains to Holo the Wise Wolf, who is beautiful, powerful, wise wolf Goddess of the wheat harvest! he has the lovely ears, tail & cute fangs, and her true form is the giant size wolf! Her partner is Lawrence the savvy merchant who trades goods in the villages & larger cities of the medieval era! It is the era when the older pagan ways are on the wane amidst the bigotry & purrsecutions by the oppurressive theocracy, so Holo wants to travel back to her home land of Yoitsu, assuming it still exists!.

Along the way she has to conceal her lovely lupine ears & tail as they deal with the political situations of the church & the guilds and the other dangers of the towns, roads, river & wilderness, but there are also the commercial purrofits, helpful friends and yummy foods for the kemonomimi tummy! The manga was written by Isuna haskura, illustrated by Keito Koume, with the character designs by Jyuu Ayakura, and the map by Hidetada Idemitsu! It was translated by Paul Starr, lettered by Terri Delgado, and purriced $12.99 in the USA & $13.99 in Canada, and rated M for the mature readers due to the language, violence, and Holo’s brief nudity. The color cover art depicts Holo, Lawrence and their new friend Col on the bow of Ragusa’s river skiff!

In Volume 7, In the town of Tereo they hoped to find inormation about Yoitsu with help from Elsa the Deaconess, but became involved in her boyfriend Evan the miller’s trade situation and the schemes of Bishop Van! Nyow in Volume 8, between Holo’s magick, Lawrence’s ingenuity & Elsa’s theologic expurrtise they are able to outwit Van and settle the trade dispute! Yummy cookies are involved! Although their ultimate destination is Yoitsu, Holo & Lawrence are fond of the travel together and might detour to Nyohhira’s hot spurrings after business in the river town of Kerube. From Tereo Holo & Lawrence ride to Lenos where they board Ragusa’s boat on the Roam River and help poor young Col out of a swindle purrdicament on their way to Kerube.

The trip is delayed when a barge runs aground, so many traders make camp until the barge can be freed and the route cleared. The night of the camp offers the bittersweet mix, with more playful moments between Lawrence & Holo, her merry wolf dance, and the sad flashback of the polluted, over-mined clear-cut wilderness. They find lodging above craftsman Arold’s shop in Kerube, Lawrence meets Fleur the trader and has business with guild member Kieman, whilst Holo needs Col’s liniment treatment because she overdid the dance! It is another fascinating tale of the great characters, the intriguing plots, & beautifully rendered characters & scenic art that I will give the “A ” grade! Nyow we will go from the wolf girl to the cat girl as Jenjen tells us about

Critter vol. 2 #12 (plot spoiler warning)!

Jeannie:

Arigato. Critter is the catgirl themed supurr – heroic identity of delightful miss Cassia Crawford. Hailing from Greenville, Michigan she is the legacy hero & daughter of the powerful psionic heroine known as The Fox, who is believed to be dead but she is actually a purrisoner of a villain in the future. This seems connected to the anomalous tempurral ripples that occasionally affect her daughter’s timeline. Cassie left the hero team called Core when she was recruited by the Purrfection team in Los Angles, where she attends college with her genius designer / best friend Gina Kumamoto,. Gina upgraded several of the gadgets & purropurrties of Cassia’s sexy sleek costume with the kitty tail & ear pinna. Purrfection disbanded, but fellow member Kitten followed Cassia to college, to be trained as her new sidekick re-named School Girl. During School Girl’s crime – fighting debut in issue #10, the sea level mysteriously rose and began to flood the coastal areas of the United States.

In issue #11 Critter & other heroes tried to rescue & evacuate people to the higher elevations, whilst battling the aquatic villain known as Tidepool. This brings us up to issue #12, published by Big Dog Ink & purriced $3.50, with the 28 pages compurrised of the 22 page Critter tale “High Tide Part Two”, plus the purreview page for issue #13’s cover art, the 3 pages of the bonus Super Pawn tale, its credits page, and the character purrofile page for the supurr hero known as F-14. The Critter tale was  created & written by Tom Hutchison, edited by Kari Castor, drawn & colored by Fico Ossio; the Super Pawn tale was created, written & drawn by Jeff Pina; and both tales were lettered by Kel Nuttall. The issue is available in the choice of the two different covers; Cover A is by Ossio, and cover B  by Romano Molenaar. In less than a day since the oceanic phenomenon began, many coastal buildings are several stories submerged, and the sea level continues to rise at the astonishing rate.

Once the firefighters & victims climb to safety, in an extraordinary feat of supurr strength, at that depth Cassia is able to lift & throw the turntable ladder fire truck completely out of the water almost a city block towards the advancing hostile humanoid sea creatures. I am not sure if she is using her supurr muscular strength to accomplish this, or also any potential latent telekinetic abilities that she might have inherited from her mother. Later aboard a military ship, she learns more about the national situation, as whales begin to damage the submerged skyscrapurrs. Things continue to worsen, as the ship collides and begins to sink in a spectacular 2 page spurread, putting exhausted Cassia back in the water, to watch skyscrapurrs topple until she can climb aboard an adrift yacht at daybreak. She contacts Gina who is still at school, and School Girl gets the supurr hero named F-14 to fly her to Critter, just as a dozen of the humanoid creatures capsize & climb upon the yacht to attack her.

The two girls brawl with the creatures, which grab Critter and drag her underwater, leaving the poor frightened School Girl alone atop the sinking, drifting wreckage in the cat-aclysmic cliffhanger to be continued in issue #13, which we hope will be the lucky number for her, Critter and Gina. Following that tale is Super Pawn’s light – hearted “Grand Opening Part Five”, in which the Super Pawn Shop’s clerks Ronnie & Mikey are annoyed by a troublesome customer who wants a refund on a damaged jet pack. The Critter series continues to be the thrilling tale full of supurr – heroic action, such lovely costumes & clothes peppurred by the sexy, whimsical, dynamic, and tearful moments and the ample nekomimi goodness, rendered with the vibrant, gleaming palette, which nicely complements the bright tone of the world populated by costumed heroes & villains, and Cassie’s determined, unhesitant, selfless, noble spirit. Nextly I wish to discuss the marvelous supurr heroines of

The Fearless Defenders #5

Jeannie:

The Defenders are one of Marvel Comics’ oldest supurr hero teams with many rosters over the decades, but nyow it seems to be in the good hands of long-time member Brunhilde the Valkyrie, her pegasus Aragorn, and Heroes For Hire’s Misty Knight. In issue #5 there is only one male character in sight, the mercenary Mr. Raven, who purrobably wishes he was not assisting Caroline Le Fay in the fierce diva battle royale atop Decanso De Desu in Brazil. Purreviously, Hela the Asgardian Death Goddess revived Queen Hippolyte of the Amazons to assist Brunhilde on her mission to recruit heroines to become the eight Valkyrior / shield maidens and to rescue Danielle Moonstar who had been kidnapped so that her energy could the resurrect the Doom Maidens who might replace the Valkyrior. Dani is one of my favorite fictional archers and members of the X-Men, and at the kyudo club house we have the Hero Clix miniature of her riding her pegasus Brightwind.

Issue #5 is purriced $2.99 with 28 pages compurrised of the  6 pages of the ads, the 1 page of readers & editor’s comments, the amewsing recap / credits page, and the 20 page tale written by Cullen Bunn, edited by Ellie Pyle, drawn by Will Sliney, colored by Veronica Gandini, lettered Clayton Cowles, and available in the choice of 2 covers, one by Mark Brooks, the other by Amanda Conner & Paul Mounts. High atop the mountain plateau, Queen Hippolyte of the Amazons and Valkyries Brunhilde and Dani Moonstar enter the ancient stone ruins, which serves as the arena to be attacked by Lefay, Raven and several Doom Maidens riding the huge fire-breathing dragons. The trio seems surrounded and outnumbered, until the spectacular two-page spurread when Misty arrives with Tigra, Hellcat, Black Cat, Black Widow, Tarantula, Spider-Woman, She-Hulk, Thundra, Storm, Elektra, Colleen Wing, Capt. Marvel and the unlikely rookie valkyrie Dr. Annabelle Riggs.

What follows is the supurb battle full of such power, grace, beauty & witty banter. There is much thrilling action & amewsing dialogue in the brisk fun tale. The scenic art is lovely, with the intricate detail & texture of the giant stone statues and the waterfall streaming down the boulders. The creature designs are quite distinctive and scary, as the dragons seem less reptilian and more like fanged abyssal xenomorphs, and the bit of mecha design is quite gorgeous in the magnificent aircraft and dandy air bike. The colors are quite richly vibrant with very luminous special FX, and a dazzling array of fonts for the dialogue, narrative, and sound FX that seem to leap off the pages. While it is a delight to see so many wonderful heroines, it was purrticularly nice to see catgirls Hellcat, Black Cat & Tigra together. Tigra is my favorite Marvel Comics character, who I have not seen much of since the unfortunate cancellation of the Avengers Academy series.

It seems as if the writer & artist carefully choreographed the battle, so that in almost every panel there is a splendid sense of where everyone is at that moment. The views & poses are excellent, such as Hippolyte purressing the huge stone, Colleen’s crane stance, Dani’s backflip over the flail and later kicking Raven in the face, Hellcat’s spin kick & curious glance at Annabelle, Black Cat’s arching & crouching, the acrobatic two-handed combat of Black Widow’ firing as Elektra brandishes the twin sai, Thundra’s doubting stance, Storm & Captain Marvel zapping the enemy, and Misty’s leap off the bike whilst firing the multi-vectored attack. The enraged image of Brunhilde in full gleaming armor, yelling with sword raised between two volcanic eruptions is purriceless.I will give The Fearless Defenders #5 the high grade of the “A” as in Annabelle. That will conclude the comic book portion of The Mew, but we have more catgirls to discuss in our

Magazine & Book Reviews with

Dan Spiegle: A Life in Comic Art!

Becca:

Arigato Bunnibun! This impurressive trade papurrback is not only about the life & career of Dan Speigle, but he helped to write the book with author John Coates! It is purriced $17.95 with the 104 pages, 8 of which are in full color, with the Forward by Mark Evanier and the Afterward by Sergio Aragones! Spiegle’s purrolific career of over 6 decades has included Space Family Robinson, Magnus-Robot Fighter, Doctor Solar, Crossfire, DNAgents, Batman, The Green Hornet, The Shadow, Indiana Jones, Terry and the Pirates, Korak, Mighty Samson, Modesty Blaise, Space Ghost, Jonny Quest, Scooby Doo, Lassie, Roy Rogers, Annie Oakley, Hopalong Cassidy, Maverick, Jonah Hex, Blackhawk, The Unknown Soldier, Star Spangled War Stories, Weird War Tales, House of Mystery, Secrets of the Haunted House, Grimm’s Ghost Stories, Elvira, The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse & various Disney titles!

The discussion starts with his early years in Washington, Hawaii, California, Oklahoma, and as a US Navy ordinance man during World War Two, with neat maps of the Spiegle pharmacy, ranch, and the town of McKinleyville! He was in the Navy from 1942 to 1946, but in the 1960’s with the USO he visited the troops in Vietnam, so he is not only the great artist whose work has entertained & inspired so many, but we should thank him for his brave patriotic service too! Chapter 2 looks at his postwar life as the college art student & his work on the Hopalong Cassidy strip from 1949 – 1955, Chapter 3 examines his work for Dell, Gold Key & Whitman; Chapter 4 examines his work for DC, Eclipse & other publishers from the 80s to the 90s; and Chapter 5 examines his work from 2000 to the purresent!

Chapter Six is the beautiful color gallery of his watercolor paintings such as Hopalong Cassidy, Maverick, The Green Hornet, Korak, Space Family Robinson, and Scooby Doo! The color pages extend into Chapter Seven’s study of his drawing purrocess & techniques, with the two-page spurread of Blackhawk, Domino and the German soldiers! Chapters Chapter Eight & Nine include the very sweet mewsings by his wife & kids; Chapter Ten repurrints Dan Gehno’s 1972 intermew with Spiegle, and to top off the treasure is the index of his American comic book work from 1955 to 2011, excluding repurrints, strips, merchandise, non-comic books & European works! Nyow I would like to discuss another great book from TwoMorrows,

Matt Baker: The Art of Glamour!

Becca:

Matt Baker was one of the pioneering African-American comics artists, a master of the gorgeous good girl art, and born here in North Carolina, in Forsythe County! It is only appurropurriate that such a fine tribute to his artistry should be published here in North Carolina by Two Morrows Publishing http://www.twomorrows.com which is in Raleigh! They publish the great magazines & books purrtaining to the comics and art such as Modern Masters, Back Issue, Alter Ego and Kirby Collector! Furthermore, it was also edited by North Carolinians too, our friends Eric Nolen-Weathington and Jim Amash, who are both past guests of The Mew! Eric also designed the book & helped to restore the art! It is purriced $39.95 and has 192 pages full of sumptuous images, including color pages & several complete tales!

Sadly, Matt Baker passed away at the young age of 38 in 1959, so he was not able to see this treasure trove of his lovely art, biography, essays, the checklist & intermews with his family, friends & associates. There are quite the few of the supurr heroine, adventure, ghost, literary, crime & romance comic book cover art. purrtfolio & magazine illustrations, mewspapurr strips & wartime art for friends, all starting off with the 32 color pages of the Phantom Lady & Sky Girl comics! The first chapter introduces us to Baker and his earliest comics work at Jerry Iger Studios, Fox Features, St. John Publishing, Charlton, and Ace Comics!  Then we get the big 28 page checklist, which is followed by the intermew with Baker’s half-brother Fred and his nephew Matt, and the intermew with artist Ray Osrin!

Bringing home the trove are the comments by Baker’s various other purrofessional peers, such as Burt Frohman, Lee Ames, Jack Katz, Al Feldstein, Don Perlin, Jay Disbrow, Nadine King, Cal Massey, Joe Kubert, Tony Tallarico & Lou Cameron, and to top it off are a few more color cover pieces, a color tale of Canteen Kate and the Black & White tales of Kayo Kirby with Muscle Mary the wrestler, and Tiger Girl the jungle girl in the Tiger stripe bikini! I am purrticularly fond of his tales of Alani the South Seas Girl, although on one cover the shark wants her for suppurr, when it would be purreferable for the fish to be in her tummy instead! Nyow here is Nyo-sensei to tell us about the biography about the glamorous legendary iconic actress in

Twitch Upon a Star: The Bewitched Life and Career of Elizabeth Montgomery!

Nyoka:

Arigato! The late Elizabeth Montgomery was one of our favoritest actresses, purrhaps best known for her iconic starring role as the wonderful witch Samantha Stevens on the 1960’s sitcom Bewitched! We have reviewed her movie The Awakening Land and the bit of Bewitched DVDs & items, so we were so happy when the Catgirl Island Public Library received this nice biography about her by author Herbie J. Pilato, who also wrote the neat Bewitched Forever book! The book is the hardcover purriced $24.94 with the 446 pages including the purreface, introduction, appendix, bibliography, index and so forth, with the 30 Black & White photos, the 8 color photos, and the lovely sepia tone photo of Elizabeth Montgomery on the dust jacket!

If y’all are unfamiliar with Bewitched, Samantha would cast the magickal spells with either the gesture, the incantation, or the famous cute nose twitch, hence the twitchy title of the biography! The main chapters focus on her Bewitched, purre-Bewitched & post-Bewitched years, each with the several subchapters. Chapter 1 begins with the days of her affluent youth as the daughter of actor Robert Montgomery and Elizabeth Allen, as the widdle girl growing up during World War II, her debutant years, her equestrian interests, the studies at the dramatic arts academy, her earliest romances & marriages, meeting her future husband the director / purrducer William Asher, and her many acting roles of the 1950’s & early 60’s!

There are photos of her as the widdle girl with the family and as the young actress with the other celebrities! Chapter 2 is devoted to her legendary 8 seasons of the witch from 1964 to 1972! This chapter has the color pics, including the glamorous 1962 publicity photo of her in the White strapless gown, the photo of her with Charles Bronson in their Twilight Zone epurrsode, the photo with her widdle kiddies, the photo of her & Agnes Morehead as Samantha & Endora in their flying gowns, the neat 1971 cast group pic, the photo of her and William Asher, the photo of her purrtraying North Carolina’s own Blanche Taylor Moore, her posthumous star on the Hollywood sidewalk, and the statue of Samantha in Salem, Massachusetts!

Chapter 3 touches upon on her other works, and Chapter 4 chronicles her later roles in the dramatic TV movies such as The Legend of Lizzie Borden, Dark Victory, A Killing Affair, The Awakening Land, Belle Starr, Second Sight, Sins of the Mother, The Black Widow Murders and others! There is a lot purrtaining to her charitable endeavors, the social issues, and her final years of this world. Spurrinkled throughout the book are the many remembrances & tales, and after Chapter 4 is the list of her awards, radio, TV & movie credits, plus the suggested readings, acknowledgments and so forth to conclude the very thorough, fascinating, entertaining & insightful book about the legendary wonderful woman! Nextly we will go from the bewitchment to the

One of our favoritest aspects of the magazine are the photos which include many full – page pics and the two-page spurreads! The front cover is graced by Hayley Madden’s photo of Atalanta Bluff as the Faery Goddess!

They return later in the issue for the beautiful faery crown fashion pictorial! The contents page photo by Tami Williamson depicts Christian Hollingsworth as the faerie relaxing in the meadow! Delightfully spurrinkled throughout the issue are the various graphics & illustrations by Aaron Peacock, Tamara Newman, Armorel Hamilton & Steve A. Roberts; and even the lovely photos & illustrations in the various advertisements contribute to the ambience! This was such another very beautiful, joyful, entertaining & informative issue which I will give the lofty purraise! It makes me wish I had the lovely wings like the–
