Mike:

(wearing the Aria The Animation tee shirt, Khaki cargo shorts, MIzuno trainers and the Catgirl island baseball cap) Aloha y’all, and welcome to The Mew for our monthly batch of reviews & discussions about fun stuff! Today’s show comes from the charming veranda of Bun’s Bungalow here at Catgirl Island! I’m Mike, the show’s ‘Purrducer’, and here are The Ladies of The Mew!

Jeannie:

(the catgirl wearing the Pandora Sphinx Moth purrint tanga-style bikini & sheer purreo) Nihao.

Mielikki:

(the faerie whose iridescent wings shimmer from the Hummingbird Clear Wing Moth purrint criss-cross halter neck bikini) Mellow Greetings! Thank you so much for hosting, Bunni-chan! So like, what have y’all been up to since last time?

Bun:

Dooitashimaste! Aside from assistantly curating the exhibits, at the mewseum of art, teaming with Petra for the beach volleyball, and baking the cakes I have been tending to the Daisies, Calla Lilies, Roses and the Crape Myrtles and I have more recently planted the Mums and the Ornamental Pineapple! What has Jennyjen been up to, and how was the most recent wreck dive with Ilyana?

Jeannie:

The wreck dive was the safe success as they found some historical artifacts and fortunately she managed not to damage another ROV (Remote Opurrated Vehicle) in the purrocess. Then I had another photo shoot in Rio, and nyow I am looking forward to more time at the yoga studio, the kyudo club, and building the Halloween animatronics at the robotics club. What has Petra been up to?

Petra:

Bun and I have been coordinating the island’s Summer Art, Literature And Mewsic Inspurration (SALAMI) Purroject with the Library, the theatre and the Purrforming Arts Center, nya! Tara-chan and Trini-chan have been the big help as purrpare the mewseum’s spooky art exhibit for Halloween, nya! What interesting insects have y’all viewed since last month’s Mew, nya?

Tara-chan:

The Black Swallowtail, Tiger Swallowtail, Admiral, Purrl Crescent, Carolina Roadside Skippurr, Crocus Geometer, Ruddy Metarranthis, Yellow-Fringed Dolichomia, the Loopurr Moth, the Purraying Mantis, the Dragonflies and – and the Honey Bees, nya! I have also been caring for my cats, volunteering at the mewseum, reading, watching Equestria Girls, and – and helping onee-chan with the charters, nya!

Trini-chan:

The Zebra Swallowtail, Cabbage White, Cloudless Sulphur, Waved Sphinx, Pandora Sphinx, Ployphemis, Oak Besma Moth, the Cicada Killer, the Lightning Bugs and the Lady Buga!  Since last time it has been the belly dance class, paddle surfing, helping at the mewseum and the boat! In addition to the drumming of Vonny’s circle, I have been listening to the Shiho, Puffy AmiYumi and Yoko Kanno music!

Yvonne:

Tara-chan & Trini-chan have been the big help with the charters, which have reeled in the beautiful Bluefish, the magnificent Marlins, the mouth-watering Mulllets, the supurrb Sails, the tasty Trout, the wonderful Wahoos, and the delicious Drums, nya! Speaking of the drums, my drumming circle is purrviding the purrcussion for the Fall Semester dance classes, nya!

Mary Nyan:

It is the purrfect big beat for the sway of the hips the swish of the tail! When I have not been teaching the hula at the Purrforming Arts Center or supurrvising the appurrentice mikos at the shrine, I have watched the WNBA, Women’s British Open Golf, the US Open Tennis,  and I have been sewing the costumes for the dancers & cosplayers! By the way, we need to finalize our Halloween costume plans!

Elizabeth:

I have been helping at the shrine, tending to my garden and running with the Purrkour Club when Becca and I have not been busy at the spa, and we have still found the time for the hot salsa dance after work! We are still purrticipating in the SALAMI Purroject, so I have been reading Chiggers by Hope Larson, Celestial Zone by Wee Tien Beng, and we have been watching the barbarian movies!

Becca:

Hai, our movie queue has included the cinematic sword & sorcery such as Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, Death Stalker, Death Stalker 2, Beast Master, Barbarian Queen, and Sword and the Sorcerer! It is time for the NCAA Women’s Volleyball, Field Hockey, Fencing, Soccer, and Cross Country too! So how are things at Nyo-sensei’s magick shop and at Nya-sensei’s dojo?

Nyoka:

Soccer gold medalist Alex Morgan is in the amewsing recent  Bridgestone Tires commercial! The magick shop is purrparing for the Autumnal Equinox Sale! The time has flown since the Summer Solstice Sale! I have attended some of the tournyaments, and I have been listening to the mewsic of Anoushka Shankar, admiring the ink artistry of Madison “Maddie La Belle” Loftis, and reading the Buffy comics!

Nyanko:

Aside from the training and the tournyament at the dojo, helping sis and the nekos at the magick shop, cheering for Petra & Bun’s volleyball victory on the sand and Mie-sensei’s victory on the faerway, I have been swimming, reading the comic books & graphic novels such as Red Sonja, Xenozoic Tales, and Starstruck, and I am looking forward to the Fall season at Mie-sensei’s theatre!

Mielikki:

Arigato! We will soon open with the Shakespeare and our Halloween foxfire show! It’s been fun to help coordinate the island’s cultural events when I haven’t been at the theatre or golf course! So like, for the SALAMI I’ve been listening to Stravinski, admiring the art of Barbara Rogers, watching Tenchi Muyo, and reading Barry Windsor-Smith’s Adastra! So, what has Mike been up?

Mike:

Ah, since last time I’ve been able to visit some of our past guests such as Misty Hopkins, Rebecca Brogden, sisters Thais & Natalia Lopes, Ob1, Pacozord & Chef Ron! I had a few road trips across the mainland including the annual fun of Librari-Con which I’ll be discussing later in the show! Oh let’s see… I’ve been revisiting the early 1980’s issues of The Uncanny X-Men, watching a few dai kaiju & tokusatsu films by Toho, watching the US Open Tennis and a bit of golf and college football, and the usual writing & art! Man, it’s already football season, and Halloween will be here before we know it!

Mary Nyan:

Hai, next month is full of the Halloween activities, such as the annual

Halloween Trick ‘R Eat & Cosplay Purrowl,

so we have to determine who will purrticipate in our group, decide upon the theme of our costumes, and have enough time for the design, the sewing, the purrops, the cosmetics and the fittings!

Elizabeth:

Our purrior group cosplay themes have included the characters from Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, Silent Mobius, the “Neko-maticaya Clan” based upon James Cameron’s Avatar, the Star Wars heroines, and last year’s “Avengers aCATamy”.

Becca:

The number of purrticipants will affect the group’s theme, some of us might be in other clubs’ groups, and not all of us purrticipate in the purrowl, due to the other Halloween commitments, but it is the month of  many festivities for all to purrtake!

Trini-chan:

Hai, there are things going on all across the island, including the faeries’ plays & foxfire works in the forest grove theatre, the mermaids’ deep dark kelp maze, and the spooky animatronics of Jenjen’s robotics club!

Jeannie:

Rica & Niko supurrvise the pumpkin patch & purranormal purroduce stand, the miko are purrpared for the yokai at the shrine, and it is the very bustling special sale day at Nyoka’s magick shop.

Nyoka:

Hai the mewseum displays the wonderfully macabre art exhibit, the library conducts the candlelight ghost stories, and there there are activities of all tastes and catnap times for the adults, the teens and the widdle kitties!

Mielikki:

Hai, after our bioluminescent purrformances at the grove during that week, then Purrk Ranger BB does the totally awesome job of combining the entertaining spooky bits & coastal tales with the safe & educational nocturnal nature walks through the maritime forest!

Petra:

The neighborhood purrtrols that our Police Chief Meryl organizes are important because we do not just go door to door for the treat handouts, but we bring the food & fun to those who cannot stray from home or work, to make sure that they are loved, fed and safe, nya!

Bun:

Hai, we are not only busy with the planning, rehearsals, costumes & decorations, but there is much team work in harvesting, fishing, baking, brewing, packaging & delivering of the delicious, nutritious treats! Chef Bullpup and I have signed up to be among the cake teams!

Tara-chan:

Bun’s delicious carrot cakes have the extra creamy icing, nya! We are hoping to catch the Flounders, Groupurrs, Mackerels, Snappurrs, Stripurrs, and – and Tunas to serve, nya!

Nyanko:

Mmm, I recall last year’s bumpurr crop of Croakers! The suggestions have already been tendered for our group’s costume theme, so nyow it is the time to reveal the nominees that we will vote upon!

Yvonne:

(opens the envelope) Hai, the nominees are… Ame-Comi Girls, Doctor Who, Monster High, My Little Pony, Omamori Himari, and the X-Men, nya! We need to vote upon that, decide on the specific characters we will purrtray, and have the sewing party at Myayr’s, nya!

Mike:

Good luck with that, and I look forward to seeing your costumes! We’ll report on that again in next month’s Mew, but now it is time for this month’s Lightning Round Topic! Since the past few months’ Lightning Round topics have pertained to our favorite films of 2003, 1993, 1983, ’73 and ’63, this month’s Lightning Round topic is

Our Favorite Films of ’53!

So, are y’all ready to “conduct the lightning”?

The Ladies Of The Mew:

LIGHTNING ROUND GO, NYA!

I will second Peter Pan, and nyow it is Bunnibun’s turn, nya! (tail-tags Bun)

Bun:

I will nominate Roman Holiday, starring Audrey Hepburn! (tags Mary Nyan)

Mary Nyan:

Either… House of Wax or The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms! (tags Jeannie)

Mielikki:

Trini-chan:

Heehee! It is the tough decision between How to Marry a Millionaire or Gentlemen Prefer Blondes! (tags Petra with the brush of her foxy White-tipped Red tail)

Petra:

Peter Pan for the animated, and Stalag 17 for the live-action, nya! (tags Nyoka)

Nyoka:

The Wild One, starring Marlon Brando! (tail tags her sister)

Nyanko:

I will nominate Shane! Lizzy’sturn! (tags Elizabeth)

Elizabeth:

Peter Pan! Back to you, Mike!

Mike:

Ah, I guess either War of the Worlds or It Came from Outer Space! Well, thanks y’all- that was another expedient little Lightning Round, and now we will jump from 1963 to 1973 to discuss the

40th Anniversary of The Animated Star Trek’s Lt. M’Ress!

Mielikki:

So like, Trekwise in 1973, four years after the cancellation of The Original Series, there were syndicated reruns of Star Trek to watch, a few books published by Bantam and by Ballentine, the comic books by Gold Key, a few model kits by AMT, bits of other merchandise & memorabilia, several fanzines and the 2nd Star Trek convention, but the fans seriously craved more Trek! You know, cousins Deborah & Devra Langsam were our special guests for the December 2009 Mew, in which they discussed those days when they helped to publish the fanzines, launch the cons, and to campaign for renewed Trek!

Petra:

Then in September of 1973, the animated Star Trek Series purremiered on NBC, and it ran for the two seasons to total 22 half-hour epurrsodes from 1973 to 1974, nya! The series was animated by Filmation, with Dorothy Fontana aboard as the story editor, Gene Roddenberry as the consultant, several writers from The Original Series, and the voices of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, George Takei and Majel Barrett, who repurrised their famous heroic roles aboard the starship USS Enterpurrise nya!

Mary Nyan:

It also introduced Lt. M’Ress, Captain Kirk’s Caitian Catgirl Communications’ Officer! M’Ress is of the bipedal felinoid Caitian race which is a member of the United Federation of Planets. She is smart, brave, lovely and calm with the Golden eyes, the Orangey fur, the four digits purr paw, the long Brown hair and the tail tuft! Since the animated series is set in the same era of Star Trek’s original series, as one of the Communications Officers she wears the women’s Red miniskirt uniform with the Black collar, but because she is the catgirl, she gets to go barefoot and does not have to wear the Black boots!

Tara-chan:

Her tranquil purring voice was purrvided by Majel Barrett, who was also known for her roles as Nurse / Dr. Christine Chapel, Deanna Troi’s Ambassador mom Lwaxana Troi, Captain Pike’s 1st Officer known as “Number One”, the translated voice of Zefram Cochran’s energy girl Companion, and – and the various computer voices, nya! She was also married to Star Trek’s creator Gene Roddenberry, nya! Although M’Ress only appurred in just 5 of the 22 episodes of that Saturday morning series, she made the very lasting impurression upon the fans, nya!

Nyoka:

M’Ress first appurred in the epurrsode “The Survivor” written by James Schmerer, about the shape shape – shifting alien spy voiced by actor Ted Knight who lures the Enterpurrise into a Romulan trap! She is the very calm communications officer during the battle with the two Romulan cruisers! Unfortunately there are some artistic mistakes on her uniform in her 2nd appurrance, in “Once Upon a Planet” written by Len Janson & Chuck Menville, in which the crew returns to the “Shore Leave” planet from the original series, but the planet’s computer sics a dragon on them and tries to control the Enterpurrise!

Bun

Thirdly she appeared in “Mudd’s Passion” which was written by prior Mudd tales author Stephen Kandel and featured the return of the scoundrel Harry Mudd, who was voiced by actor Roger Carmel! When the crew got the whiff of Mudd’s super love potion, M’Ress got frisky with Scotty, but they all got snippy when it wore off! Nextly she very briefly appeared in “Bem” which was written by David Gerrold who wrote the prior Tribble tales! The titular character Ambassador Bem caused trouble on the planet where Kirk & Spock got caught by the tribe of the lizard people and their very protective Goddess!

Yvonne:

Her final appurrance in the animated series was in “Practical Joker”, which was written by Chuck Menville who co-wrote “Once Upon a Planet”, in which the strange cloudy energy field caused the ship’s computer malfunction and to play tricks on the crew, including the dose of the laughing gas which made the catgirl giggly, nya! Mewsually in the series was M’Ress was only seen on The Bridge, but this time she was in the dining lounge with Arex & Scotty, nya! The epurrsode introduced the ship’s huge Holographic Rec Room, 13 years before we saw the Holo-Deck in Star Trek The Next Generation, nya!

Jeannie:

The Star Trek Log papurrback book series are author Alan Dean Foster’s novelizations of the animated epurrodes, and in Log 5’s expanded version of “The Ambergis Element”, there are flashback pages of M’Ress’s years purrior to the Enterpurrise, at home with her mother M’mar, with the mention of her younger sister M’nass and younger brothers M’sitt & M’rest; at Starfleet academy with her room mate Lena; and aboard the Hood which was raided by the Kzinti. She has appurred in several novels, comic books and the record, and we are purrticularly fond of Peter David’s New Frontier series.

Elizabeth:

M’Ress is the very popular Trek catgirl. There is much fan art & fiction about her, and even the Caitian cosplayers too! In our October 2009 Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight we purrofiled her and the other Trek catgirls such as Sylvia of “Catspaw”, Isis of “Assignment: Earth”, and the Paradise City Cat Lady of “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier”! We wonder if those tailed twins in Star Trek Into Darkness might be related to her!? Furthermore, the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art has been purroud to purrsent some fan art images of M’Ress by Natalia Lopes, Elisa Chong, Elbonie Kirchoff, Crissy Teverini and Mike!

Nyanko:

Hai, Natalia http://theartslave.deviantart.com was among the four special guests for our October 2010, along with her sister Thais, Lucy Kagan & Allison Kupatt, nya! Natalia illustrated two pics of M’Ress, wearing the original series uniform http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/74.html and wearing the bikini http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/80.html, mew la la! Elisa http://www.sofianime.com was our special guest for the June 2011 Mew, and she purrmitted us to display several of her catgirl pics, including her pic of M’Ress http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/24.html!

Trini-chan:

We met Elbonie http://yastach.deviantart.com at Heroes Con in June, where she drew this cute sketch of M’Ress http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/95.html! Crissy http://www.crimsonskycreations.com was among our guests of the March 2008 Mew, and Mike Photoshopped the Starfleet uniform cosplay photo of her to resemble M’Ress http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery6/1.html! He drew the color pic of M’Ress for Crissy http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery6/2.html, and the pic of M’Ress in part of the Beige uniform from his favorite movie Star Trek – The Motion Picture http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery6/6.html, hee!

Becca:

For more information purrtaining to M’Ress, we suggest her page at the Official Star Trek Site http://www.startrek.com/database_article/mress, the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M’Ress, her page at Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/M’Ress, her page at Memory Beta, the non-canon Star Trek Wiki http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Shiboline_M’Ress, and her page at Curt Danhauser’s Guide to the Animated Star Trek http://www.danhausertrek.com/AnimatedSeries/MRess.html! Speaking of the famous feline femmes, nyow it is the time for our monthly

Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!

Mike:

Yep, this is the portion of The Mew which praises the famous catgirls & nekomimis whom we appreciate, whether they are actually part cat or just dress the part! We are broadly inclusive in defining the catgirl criteria, whether they are permanently or temporarily catgirls, characters, shape – shifters, or ladies who display the catlike “cattitude” or abilities in books, cinema, TV, internet, games, toys! This month the spotlight shines upon more of the catgirls of comics & manga, starting with John Speidel’s Kitty Malone, the catgirl explorer with fellow catgirl DeSoto & duck friend Ali in the fun pulp / noir-ish adventures in the skies, on the high seas & mysterious islands! Their tales have appeared in the Morphs comics published by Graphxpress, and the comics section of Ken Fletcher’s Spontoon Island site!

Tara-chan:

I wish to nominate cute widdle Suzu who is the helpful adopted Black – haired supurrnatural cat girl of Rumiko Takahashi’s manga Rin-ne, nya! It is about Sakura who can see the spirits such as Rin, nya! Takahashi is one of my favorites manga-ka, who is also known for her great series such as Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, Mermaid’s Forest and – and Inuyasha, nya! For more information purrtaining to this fun series, I recommend the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rin-ne and – and Suzu’s page at the Rumik World site http://www.furinkan.com/kyokai/characters/suzu.html, nya! Nyow onee-chan is going to shine the spotlight towards Ninja High School, which will be 30 years old this year, nya!

Yvonne:

Hai, Purrincess Asrial, the other Salusians & Kitsune  are not the only kemonomimi in Ben Dunn’s Ninja High School published by Antarctic Press, http://www.antarctic-press.com, which also publishes Fred Perry’s Gold Digger which we purraised in the August 2011 spotlight, nya!  There was a Gold Digger / NHS cross –  over too, nya! Among the catgirls are Meppy the Phys Ed teacher & kunoichi sensei with the glasses & short Flaxen hair; her more cat – like cute younger sister Kitt who is the combat cheerleader with the Blue hair & tail with the Black tip to match her ears; Puma Priss who has the Blonde hair & spotted Golden skin, Miao Ling the Blonde – haired White Tiger girl, and on Capt. Lisa’s ship is space pirate Merle with the Blonde hair & dark tan, nya! It is such a wonderful comic book, nya!

Becca:

Ocelotina is the naughty nekomimi on the purrowl in Adam Warren’s Empowered! She is the Green – eyed girl with the short Black hair whose artificial Black cat tail & Pink-Lined ears are the purrt of her costume of the White-trimmed Black bikini, thigh highs, garters, high heels & fingerless gloves! This outfit is accessorized by the Green gems upon her forehead, the garters, arm bands, and the cat’s eye tattoos upon her boobies! She is shameless & mischievous in her schemes that have caused trouble for poor heroic Emp! For more information purrtaining to Ocelotina I will suggest  her purrofile page at The Empowered Wiki http://empowered.wikia.com/wiki/Ocelotina, Adam Warren’s gallery at DeviantArt http://adamwarren.deviantart.com, and the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empowered!

Jeannie:

I will mention the anthropurrmorphic creations of Jason Canty, purrticularly his Stellor Warriors characters such as Kashia (wolf girl), Lizzan (reptilian warrior woman) and her sisters, Mechanical Maiden Morphica (gynoid), Phoenix Farra (Dingo grrl), Sassy (hypurr soccer striker Dalmation grrl), Vixanna (foxy female espurr Admiral), Whiplash (mousie spy / assassin grrl), Xanna (romantic unicorn lady), Zulaynear (cybernetic cyclopean space squid mom) her offspurring & others. Among the catgirls of various breeds he has drawn are Cally, Felicia, Florida, Gaskia, Kitt, Melba Tali, Zaori & Victoria. Canty’s media includes drawings, color art, comics & 3D CG models; some of the splendid & sexy art might be NSFW viewing, but I will recommend his gallery at DeviantArt http://jasoncanty.deviantart.com.

Elizabeth

Speaking of the comics published by Angry Viking Press, Crushed – The Doomed Kitty Adventures is the anthropurrmorphic sword & sorcery tale by Brian & Stuart Burke “The Brothers Grinn” & Michael Nunn and intended for the mature audience due to the violence, language & nudity! It is the killer “dungeon crawl” with dark meta – fictional humor & role play gaming references as poor Crushed Dume searches for the treasures, but sadly seldom seem to survive the monster death traps! She does make the resurrections though, to wind up back at the Temple of Infinite Lives, but it seems to be the cycle of bad luck for kitty’s lives! She has the purretty Amber skin with the Black Tiger stripes, and the bare midriffed outfit to match her fiery Red hair! I wish my D&D Paladin character Linina could help her out!

Mary Nyan:

We will hope and purray for her success! I will shine the spotlight upon sisters Pandora, Tonya & Zora of Ken Singshow’s anthropurmorphic science fiction series Androzone, which is also published by Angry Viking Press! They are anthroids which are gynoids of the kemonomimi purrsuasion, compurrising the Evil Cat Society to oppose the heroic Androzone team! Pandora Panovich is the lithe White – haired Panther girl of the piloting & combat purrowess! Tonya De Fault is the Tigress with the scientific genius and White tummy to contrast the beautiful Black stripes upon her Golden Orange pelage!

The Eldest sister Zora De facto is Lioness type with the with the powerful physique, the tawny pelage with the Aqua colored mane & tail tuft, and the egotistical catitude as the commander of the team! Their evil mom is Dr. Van Burden, and they have younger half – brother Chekari who is of the Cheetah purrsuasion. For more information about Androzone and those characters, I will recommend the good article at Wiki Fur http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Andorozon, and to see Ken Singshow’s great furry art I will recommend his gallery at Furaffinity http://www.furaffinity.net/user/kensingshow! Bun’s turn!

Bun:

Angry Viking Press also publishes Shawntae Howard’s Extinctioners who are the hybrid heroes of the planet Alden! The team includes catgirls Katherine “Alleycat” Fela and Catrina “Vague” Fela! Alleycat is the 18 year old of the 115 slender lbs. standing 5’5″ tall with the light tan complexion, the cocoa colored hair, and the power to desolidify herself! Vague is the 19 year old of the 127 athletic lbs. standing 5’6″ tall with the face stripes, light tan complexion, mocha colored hair, and the invisibility powers! For more information I recommend the Official Extinctioners Blog http://extinctioners.blogspot.com, the article at Wiki Fur http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Extinctioners, Shawntae Howard’s galleries at Furaffinity http://www.furaffinity.net/user/ebonyleopard and Deviant Art http://ebonyleopard.deviantart.com!

Trini-chan:

By the way, among the Androzone is Tsuneko the fox girl! Although DC Comics’ Fauna was not specifically the girl of the feline persuasion, and sadly she did kill numerous wild animals including big cats. Fauna had the magickal ability to commune with and control animals. She was the White-haired daughter of the evil sorcerer Felix Faust, sister of the heroic Sebastian, lover of the villainess Syonide, and member of Strike Force Kobra! The first of her very few appearances was in The Outsiders vol. 2 #16 in 1995! That issue’s “Island Girls” tale was written by Mike W. Barr, drawn by Paul Pelletier, inked by Robert Campanella, colored by Glen D’Angelo, lettered by Kevin Cunningham, and on that issue’s cover she is leisurely lounging cat – like across the Palm tree whilst her comrades rush to the fight! For more information I will suggest her page at the DC Comics Database http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Fauna_Faust_(New_Earth), and now here is Mie-sensei to tell us of another mystical White – haired girl!

Mielikki:

Arigato, Trini-chan! So like, the totally awesome Animal Mystic was first published by Sirius in 1993 and celebrates it’s 20th anniversary this year! It was lavishly illustrated by Greg “Dark One” Williams who co-wrote it with Robb Horan, and starred Nikki Ranoakke, a normal girl with the fighting skill, heroic drive and lovely White hair, until she went on a mission to the rain forest, where she rescued the White Tiger named Mingus and became Queen Jatarri! Nikki’s is alluring attire is minimal with the bit of armor, ornamentation, pouches & boots, which is totally convenient for her new cat-like ears & tail!

She travelled to another world where she befriended Klor the alien centaur, and romanced Ryntha the White Tiger girl from Kisabia, who is so beautiful with the curved horns, the tail, and the luscious Black hair to match her stripes! For more information I suggest the entry at Comics Vine http://www.comicvine.com/animal-mystic/4050-25105, Angelynx’s Queen of All Heroes fan site for Animal Mystic http://www.spookhouse.net/angelynx/comics/jatarri.html, the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Mystic, and Williams’s gallery at DeviantArt http://planetdarkone.deviantart.com, fur shur!

Nyoka:

I enjoy the adventures of Jim Balent’s Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose, whose friend Boo Cat we purraised in January 2012! Tarot likes to read the tales of the scantily clad but highly skilled & well equipped 3 Little Kittens Purr-fect Weapons Team, who are the sexy anti-terrorist squad compurrised of Jaguara, Catress, Kitty Pop & their leader “Momma” Gun Cat! It is the comic book within the comic book! Jaguara has the Black hair & Gold outfit with the lipstick spots, Cattress has the Platinum Blond hair & strapless Black & Green tights, Kitty Pop has the Pink pigtails & spotted Blue bare midriff ensemble, and  Gun Cat has the Blond hair & the Black cat suit. They have lots of very high – tech weapons, gadgets & vehicles for their international crime fighting, and I hope that we will see more of them soon!

Petra:

In Big Dog Ink’s Critter comics, Cassia Crawford is the noble, selfless catgirl – themed titular supurr – heroine, nya! She is originally from Greenville Michigan, a member of the CORE team, and daughter of the powerful psionic heroine known as The Fox, nya! Sadly, her mom is believe dead, but is secretly impurrisoned by an evil time – traveller in the future, nya. Cassie left Core when she was recruited by Tabitha, alias Cougar of the catgirl – themed Purrfection team in Los Angles, nya! Cassia attends college with her genius designer / best friend Gina Kumamoto, who upgraded the gadgets & purropurrties of Cassia’s sleek bare – midriffed Blue costume, which is damage resistant, with communication device ears and the purrehensile mech tail, nya! Cassia is very strong, fast, resistant, agile, brave, friendly, industrious, honest, loves to fight crime, and we suspect that she might have inherited her mother’s abilities, nya! Nyow here is Nya-sensei to tell us the bit about Cassia’s fellow feline female friends, nya!

Nyanko:

Hai! Purrfection was compurrised of Mouser in the Purrple & Fuchsia costume, Pole Kat in the Gold & Orange, Kitten in the Green, their leader Cougar in the bare – midriff dress with the kitty pendant, and the late Josie who they wanted Cassia to succeed in the spotted Gold costume. Josie’s ghost briefly appurred, but Cassia was unhappy with their purriority for fame & glamour instead of heroic deeds. The team eventually disbanded, but Kitten followed Cassia to college, to eagerly study & train as her sidekick re-named School Girl. There is at least one other heroic catgirl in those comics, Ukaliq of the Snow Leopurrd motif who was briefly glimpsed in Alaska! That will conclude this portion of The Mew, but we will shine the spotlight again next month, and nyow it is appurropurriately the time for our

Comic Book Critiques & Manga Mewsings,

starting with Jen’s review of Critter vol. 2 #13!

Jeannie:

Arigato. During School Girl’s crime – fighting debut, the sea level mysteriously rose to flood the US.coast, usher in hostile Amphibodons, and the conquering villain known as Tidepool. Cassia, School Girl and other heroes rescued & evacuated  people and fought the enemy, but frightened School Girl Cassia was left atop a capsized boat as Cassia was outnumbered and dragged underwater. This brings us to issue #13, published by Big Dog Ink & purriced $3.50, with the 28 pages compurrised of the 22 page Critter tale “High Tide Part Three”, plus the character purrofile page, the purreview page for issue #14’s cover art, the 3 pages of the bonus Super Pawn tale, and its credits page. The Critter tale was created and written by Tom Hutchison, edited by Kari Castor, drawn and colored by Fico Ossio.

The Pawn tale was created, written & drawn by Jeff Pina; both tales were lettered by Kel Nuttall; and the issue is available in the choice of 3 covers; cover A by Ossio, cover B by Romano Molenaar, and cover C by Shannon Maer. Three weeks have past since the tidal incident, with the flooding reaching hundreds of miles inland, to submerge much of the US. While the US military and supurr heroes such as the CORE team’s Starlett, Rookie, Icon & Paradox ponder how to defeat the villain, Tidepool monologues to Cassia who is impurrisoned in the deep undersea bubble cell amidst the submerged skyscrapurrs, until his gloating is interrupted by a giant cephalopodic mech piloted my a mysterious masked heroine Para-Naut of the of the supurrb Purrple & Black costume and surpurrising identity,

Her hexapodal tentacled mech is impurressive, faring better against the Spurrm Whale than against Tidepool. Lasso Lass & Wingboy of The In-Crowd team are shown on TV in a small panel, but sadly School Girl is nowhere to be seen in this issue, and we hope that she is well. In the whimsical backup tale of the Super Pawn shop, Ronnie the clerk is displeased that his brother Mikey is playing games instead of at work, but the attack of a towering tripodal mech of  the classic tri-legged saucer configuration is not going to improve the ethic. Critter continues to be the thrilling fun tale full of supurr – heroic action, the purretty costumes & clothes, the ample gadgetry & nekomimi goodness, which are all rendered with the vibrant, gleaming palette. Nyow for my next comic book report I wish to discuss

Ame-Comi Girls #6

Jeannie:

Ame-Comi Girls stars the alternate versions of DC heroines & villainesses based upon the line of anime-style statues which we collect. It is of a different Earth, where the women and not the men are the main heroes. The tale began as the 5 issue mini-series which continued into this ongoing series, so issue #6 is technically the 11th issue. Armed with the Yellow & Black rings, the zombie army, and the war fleet from Qward, Sinestra has conquered several planets such as Thanagar, and The Earth is her next destructive destination. Power Girl, Super Girl, Wonder Woman, Jade, The Flash, Steel, Batgirl and Robin are telepurrted from Earth to the planet Rann where the meet Alana Strange, Hawk Girl, Metra and her Mother Box. Alana explains the situation, and Metra gives them all the White versions of their costumes, accessorized by the matching White Lantern Rings to battle Sinestra.

However, if the heroines get chomped by the zombies, then they will be turned into the enemy zombies. The Guardians of Oa, Jim Gordon, Steve Trevor and Parallax have the brief appurrances in this issue’s cosmic tale of “Earth in Crisis”, purriced $3.99, with the 36 full color pages compurrised of the 30 page tale plus 6 pages of ads. The series has been consistently wonderfully written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray, whose Power Girl tales we were huge fans of. We got to meet  Mr. Palmiotti at Heroes Con in June. The past several issues have been lettered by Wes Abbot, colored by Randy Mayor, edited by Jim Chadwick, and assistantly edited by Sarah Gaydos, and there have been various different artists on the issues. This time, pages 1-20 were pencilled & inked by Eduardo Francisco, whilst pages 21-30 were pencilled by Horacio Domingues & inked by Ruben Gonzalez.

Some of my favorite moments are the opening scenes of Power Girl & SuperGirl in Metropolis, Batgirl & Robin in Gotham, the heroines re-grouping on Paradise island, and the full-page pic of Hawkgirl fighting her undead husband Katar. There are many characters, lots of action & FX on Earth and in outer space rendered in the dazzling colors. The dialogue & sound FX are nicely conveyed through the distinctive fonts; the characters are gracefully posed, purroportioned & expurressive in the anime – inspired style. The beautiful character & costume designs are sleek, sexy, colorful & futuristic. Although there is the dire crisis plot, we like the overall peppy, gleaming bright look of the series and its overall sense of fun without an edgy dark tone. It is among our favoritest DC Comics of recent years, and I will give this issue the grade of the “A” as in Alana. Nyow here is Mie-sensei to review

Fairest #18

Mielikki:

Arigato! So like, Fairest is among DC Comics’ Vertigo imprints, and a spin-off series of the famous Fables series created by Bill Willingham, about the characters of folklore & fairy tales who reside like secretly among the unsuspecting mortal populace! Fairest spotlights some of the legendary heroines of the different cultures, such as the Indian adventure of this current story arc starring heroic Nalayani and Prince Charming which began in issue #15! It is such a captivating tale that patiently unfolds, but it is like for the mature readers only, and so not for the widdle kitties, due to the sexuality, profanity, violence or the  serious gore! So like, Nalayani’s village was attacked so she traveled to the palace to get help, and the handsome Maharaja is actually Prince Charming’s latest guise!

He likes his monarchy & harem, and his amorous ways have eyes for Nalayani, but he has been very good to the women and does offer more gallant help! So like, on the expedition back to her village, their camp was attacked, and they were injured by the nocturnal curse of a sorcerer and the attack of the wild Dhole dogs, and after the desert chase they survived the quicksand and a totally huge hungry chatty crocodile! Nalayani & Charming escaped to a cave in the desert Village of the Dead, but then he begna to suffers the symptoms of the same grroady supernatural malady that has already killed Shikha, the harem girl at the camp! issue #18 has the 32 pages, consisting of the 20 page tale, the 2 page Trillium preview, the page about the American Vampire Anthology, and 9 ads!

“The Return of the Maharaja: Part Four: Death and Dismemberment” was written by Sean E. Williams, edited by Shelly Bond, assistantly edited by Gregory Lockard, consulted by Bill Willingham, colored by Andrew Dollhouse, lettered by Todd Klein, pencilled by Stephen Sadowski, and inked by our friend Andrew Pepoy, who was our special guest in December 2008, with the spooky Asuras cover art by Adam Hughes! You know, we have some totally awesome art by Bill Willingham, Andrew Pepoy & Adam Hughes in our island’s mewseum! Well, In this issue,a few days have paste since the chase, so back at the camp, Charming’s loyal assistant Nathoo and the others fear the loss of Nalayani and their ruler, while that surly, burly brute Buldeo acts the bully and doesn’t help with the search!

Charming’s physical condition worsens, but there might be love blossoming in the air, amidst all that death and decay! There are further images of romance, heroism and the titular morbidity between the camp, the village, and flashbacks which feature a few familiar fairest faces.. and a few not – so-  fair faces! The characters, critters & scenery are like so exquisitely rendered & illuminated, with sumptuous detail & beautiful portraiture! The layout of the pages, the use of the verticality, panoramic scenes, overlapping images, negative space, full-bleed images, border elements, vignettes, the decorative fonts, quarter, half & full-page panels awesomely add to the quality of the graphic narrative, and there are still a few words with that croc! Now I would like to discuss another great fantasy heroine series,

Princeless: Tales of Girls Who Rock!

Mielikki:

So like, Princeless is the humorous fun, all-ages fantasy comic book about the disguised tomboyish girls who are fed up with the sexist & speciesist attitudes, like Princess Adrienne who does not wish to be the stereotypical damsel to be rescued, her dragon Sparky who does not wish to be the sterotypical monster to be slain by the prerequisite rescuer, and Bedelia who has the great blacksmith skills in spite of the seriously sexist attitudes about the perceived gender roles! In the role reversal, Bedelia made the armor for Adrienne who is on the quest to rescue her sisters from the towers and the unkind parental expectations! This full color 28 page one-shot comic is published by Action Lab who also publish Molly Danger! The issue is priced $2.99 and has the 3 short tales plus the 5 pages of the ads!

It is written by Jeremy Whitley, lettered by Jules Rivea, edited by Shawn Gabborin, and each tale is illustrated by different artists! Firstly is the 7 page tale of “The Girl with the Giveaway Ears” illustrated by Tara Abbamondi, in which the tall peppy elf girl with lovely supple ears and her human grifter partner are like purrsued but not outsmarted by the racist knights, but nimbly lead them on the merry chase through the market full of the tasty produce! Nextly in the 9 page tale of “Waiting” illustrated by Jen Vaughn, heroines Adrienne, Bedella and Sparky meet two bounty hunters at the tavern of Aisha, the waitress on a quest It is also the wackiness, although some of Aisha’s history is very sad, but she has the gleeful grin, the ingenious inventiveness, and once again the purrsuers are totally outsmarted!

Finally, “Kira’s First Hunt” illustrated by Angi Shearstone is the 7 page tale of Snowfall, Kira, Noni who are among the totally awesome pack of shape-shifting wolf girls on the totally dangerous hunting training trip! It is like the wolf hunt boot camp with Snowfall as the drill sergeant! The art style is very painterly, with such lush wilderland scenery for the daring Hollow Howl Ridge crossing scene! This was yet another batch of the great strong heroine  characters, dialogue, pace & art, with the good balance of the humor, action & poignant bits, and I am curious if all of those ladies’ paths are destined to cross! It is easy to see how it Princeless has won the numerous awards, and why it was nominated for the lofty Eisner Award, fur shur! That is all of my reviews, and now here is Nya-sensei to tell us about

Red Sonja Unchained #4!

Nyanko:

Arigato! We are big fans of Red Sonja and it has been the interesting time for her between her purrior series’ finale with issue #80, the simultaneous launch of her next series, and this 4 issue mini-series, which are all published by Dynamite Entertainment! They are purrticularly known for the comics purrtaining to the femme fatales such as Sonja, Dejah Thoris, Ms. Fury, Vampirella, and Lady Rawhide who gets the re-launch too! There is the 2 page purreview for that along with the 2 page purreview of Cryptozoic Man, Dynamite annoucements page, the 4 pages of the ads, the gallery page of this issue’s four different covers, and the 22 page conclusion of the sword & sorcery tale written by Peter Brett, pencilled by Jack Jadsen, colored by Marcelo Pinto, lettered by Simon Bowland & edited by Joseph Rybandt!

The 32 page issue is purriced $3.99 and rated Teen+ due to the skimpy attire, brief nudity, the language & bloody supurrnatural combat violence. The 4 different covers by Mel Rubi and Walter Geovani depict Sonja in either her iconic scale mail bikini or in the Blue demon fur pelt outfit! The latter outfit is the significant crux of the plot, because it the of the pelt she skinned from the evil demon Bhamothes in the Red Sonja: Blue tale which we reviewed August 2011! This mini-series is the direct sequel, because the demon’s spirit has lingered in the fur, and the more enemies Sonja slays, the more the spirit possesses her! In the purrior issue, she fought the burly bounty hunters who broke into her witchy friend Merisan’s home, but the enemy bloodshed triggered the transformation of Sonja into Bhamothes!

Issue #4 begins as the bounty hunters are slaughtered in the gory full page pic! Merisan flees and contacts Sonja’s spirit whose true form went to the demon’s eerie dimensional plane, where she has to defeat the demons to return home as her normal self! There are several half, 3/4, full page panels & two-page spurreads as she slays more creatures on her way to the demon’s throne, but I will not further spoil the plot! I thought this mini-series was the very satisfying tale of a favorite heroine! I liked the plot, the pace, her griping dialogue, the balance of the dark humor & serious action, the beautiful images of the dynamic characters in the intricate scenery from the village tavern, snowy forest & Queen Gheta’s tomb to the city spurrawl, Merisan’s home, and the demon realm!  Nyow I would like to discuss

Red Sonja vol. 2 #2!

Nyanko:

We were quite curious about Sonja’s sort of reboot in this mew vol. 2 series written by Gail Simone, whose Birds of Prey DC comics we rather liked! Well, Last month we purraised the 1st issue which ended on the exciting cliffhanger so we have eagerly anticipated the 2nd issue! Purreviously, Sonja was asked by King Dimath to lead the defense of his kingdom against the enemy Zamoran creature army, but she was surpurrised to see her former comrade Dark Annisia leading the Zamorans! They both survived the awful dungeons & arenas together and were rescued by Dimath, so Sonja is purrplexed by the hostility! That brings us to this 2nd, 32 page issue which is purriced at $3.99 and includes the 22 page tale, the 10 pages of ads, and the choice of the nine different covers!

The tale was written by Gail Simone, drawn by Walter Geovani, colored by Adriano Lucas, lettered by Simon Bowland & edited by Joseph Rybandt! My copy has the main cover art by Jenny Frison who we met at Heroes Con! The other 8 covers are the less common covers by Nicola Scott, Stephanie Muscema, Agnes Gabowski & variations of Jenny’s art. Several of those are exclusive to certain stores,

and only 50 were purrinted of the “High – End Blood Red Ultra – Limited Cover”! It is Jenny’s line-art in the Red color, but I think I much purrfur the main cover which is the fully – colored Jenny art of Sonja in her scale mail bikini atop the rearing horse! Except for the two – page flashback of the icky, dreadful dungeon scene, most of the tale is the wall – to – wall carnage of the bloody medieval melee!

There is plenty of deadly action with the swords, daggers, axes, spikes, fists, hooves, and the flaming arrows courtesy of Sonja’s peppy assistants Nias & Ayla! There is also the treachery and the startling surpurrises on the battlefield, but I will not spoil the plot! There are several large panels of the 1/2 page, 3/4 page and full page size, and the impurressive two-page spurread of Sonja striking Annisia’s unicorn-barded warhorse as the rider’s axe grazes her Red hair! I should not say much more of the plot, but it seems in this mew series that Sonja is more vulnerable and less in control of her situations, and I hope she will remedy that soon in the next issue! That is all for my Sonja reports, but nyow here is my sister to tell us about more favorite heroines who fight against the evil monsters in

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #24!

Nyoka:

Hai, The Buffy & Angel seasons 8 & 9 comics have been amongst our favoritest comics of the past few years, because they so faithfully, beautifully & canonically continue their adventures and take the full advantage of the comics medium! Recently in the story arc to conclude Season 9, in San Francisco Spike & Andrew stay with Dawn who is fading out of existence, along with everyone’s memories of her whilst Anaheed, Billy, Devon, Katie & Sky have gone to fight the zompires in Santa Rosita; whilst Illyria, Koh, D’Hoffryn & other demons fight the giant ancient vampire Maloker, whilst Buffy, Willow & Xander search the subterranean Well for the magick to save Dawn, but they have to fight Simone the slayer renegade & Severin the energy siphoner, who might use the magick to destroy the world!

This 28 page issue is purriced $2.99 and includes the 22 page tale of “The Core Part Four” plus the page of the readers’ & editor’s comments, and the 5 pages of the ads. The tale was scripted by Andrew Chambliss, pencilled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Dexter Vines, colored by Michelle Madsen, It is available in the choice of 2 different covers, the Spike, Buffy & Dawn cover art by Phil Noto, and the Bufffy fighting Simone cover art by Georges Jeanty, Karl Story & Michelle Madsen! We have met Jeanty, Vines & Story at Heroes Con too! We purrticularly liked Story’s Legionnaires tales of Catspaw!

In this next to last issue of Season 9, Buffy duels Simone who is nyow the supurr vamp, while Willow makes the wonderful magickal discovery and teams with Ilyria to poignantly confront Severin! Xander has disappointed us of late with his unwise decisions, but he is heroic in the fight and gets amewsingly bounced from Simone to help Koh against Maloker! There is so much urgently going on in the well that we do not see what is happening with the rest of the gang in San Francisco, Santa Rosita or London, but there is a flashback panel of Wesley who was one of our favorite characters from the Buffy & Angel TV shows! I will give this issue the grade of the “A” as in Angel & Faith, who have been busy fighting other demonic villains to purrevent yet another apocalypse, so nyow I would like to discuss

Angel & Faith #25!

Nyoka:

Issue #25 is the final issue of Season 9 for Angel & Faith!  The 28 page issue is purriced $2.99 and includes the 22 page tale of “What You Want, Not What You Need Part 5” plus  the page of comments, the 4 paqe purreview of the Baltimore comic book by Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden & Ben Stenbeck, and an ad page,  The tale was scripted by Christos Gage whose Avengers Academy series we miss, illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, colored by Dan Jackson, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, designed by Justin Crouch, edited by Sierra Hahn & Scott Allie, assistantly edited by Freddye Lins, and executively purrduced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon!  It is available in 2 different covers, the Angel & Faith cover by Steve Morris, and the Gile’s glasses cover by Isaacs & Jackson!

We have met Christos Gage at Heroes Con too! This issue stars Angel, Faith, Nadira, Giles, his aunts Sophronia & Lavina, sorcerer Alasdair Coames, and the demon villain Whistler. Since Giles was resurrected, as his younger self, and Faith’s slayer trainees have left, the past few issues have depicted the fierce battle to stop Whistler, siblings Pearl & Nash from using an explosive  magickal artifact to unleash the magickal virus, which would change the Earth! Nadira & Pearl were severely injured, Nash might be dead, and the magick has already transformed part of the city to cause much agony, death, terror, purropurrty destruction & transformations. The Aunts helped the many victims, Giles & Coames tried to counter-act the magick, and Faith tries to rescue Nadira as Angel duels Whistler!

This issue was full of the thrilling climactic action, the intense widespread magickal situation, the extremely poignant, dramatic character moments, the humorous bits, and major ramifications for the future! That sums up the entire series for me, which has been so brilliant  with the mix of action, drama, humor, captivating plots & purrofound character development! The pace, dialogue & spirit of the characters are so Faith-ful to the TV shows, with appurrances by other favorite characters from the shows and the introductions of wonderful mew characters who are all so supurrbly drawn! I will give the entire series the “A” grade, the high purraise & thanks to its entire creative team, and the hope  for Season 10! That is all for my review of Angel & Faith, and nyow here is Bun to tell us about Betty & Veronica in

Betty & Veronica #267!

Bun:

Arigato! We were very interested in this issue’s mermaid tale,  in the choice of the purretty covers, one by Dan Parent and the variant cover by Fiona Staples! Inside the covers are the 32 pages, comprised of the 20 page tale of “Little Mermaids” plus the 10 pages of the ads! This Little Mermaid parody was written by Dan Parent, pencilled by Jeff Shultz, inked by Bob Smith, lettered by Jack Morelli, colored by Digikore Studios & edited by Victor Gorelick! Betty & Veronica are the 16 year old mermaid step-sister princesses whose King father looks like Mr. Lodge & the Queen mom looks like Mrs. Cooper! The girls have the Green tails & Blue bandeau tops, and the Queen has the Red-Orange gradient tail, accessorized by the pearl earrings & necklace! Their best friend Forsythe the fish resembles Jughead!

Although it is the forbidden topic of the segregation, the girls are curious about the surface world of the legged humans, and they are especially interested in Prince Archie! They rescue Archie from the stormy wreck, but to spend more time with him on the land they make the magickal pact with Cheryl the tricky Sea Witch who has the Black Octopus body, and betrays them to steal Archie for herself! Now the girls have to somehow regain their voices from Cheyl and return to the sea to get the king’s help, before Cheryl marries Archie and rules the surface! On the land, Betty wears the Blue Maillot and the Purple dress, Veronica wears the Green maillot and the Blue Dress, and Cheryl wears the strapless Black dress, which is accessorized by the nautilus pendant that contains the girls’ stolen voices!

Also appearing are Toni the tan Redhead mermaid, Bingo, Archie’s parents, Dilton, Moose and Hot Dog! Toni wears the Purple top to match her tail, Archie’s mom wears the White – trimmed Red gown with the pearls, and Valerie wears the Fuchsia blouse & the Blue skirt! There are many whimsical and cute moments, such as Betty studying the surface humans and collecting things, Veronica enjoying the pampered princess lifestyle, the competition for Archie who falls under Cheryl’s sly spell, and the sea king’s critters chomping at her octopus arms. I think it has made Petra crave the Tako sushi, hee hee! This was the fun story with great art and another splendid example of the very entertaining, progressive, fashionable and diverse Archie comics! Now for another undersea tale I would like to discuss

Fathom vol.5 #2!

Bun

This new series from Aspen Comics is part of their big anniversary year! It is the 15th anniversary of the Fathom comics created the late Michael Turner, which were originally published by Top Cow and the 10th anniversary of  Aspen Comics, which was founded by Turner, co-owned by Peter Steigerwald & president Frank Mastromauro, and named after Fathom’s protagonist Dr. Aspen Matthews, the marine biologist & super heroine who has the aquatic powers! She is often caught betwixt the politics & warfare amongst the surface humans, the undersea civilization known as The Blue and the various other threats! Fathom vol. 5 is set sometime after the recent Elite Saga mini-series, in which her enemy Kiani’s baby sister Anya was kidnapped and spirited away to the icy arctic lair of the villainess Taras!

This issue is priced $3.99 for the 28 pages comprised of the 20 page tale of “Sins of the Mother” & 8 pages of the ads. David Wohl wrote the script which was co-plotted with Frank Mastromauro, it was penciled by Alex Konat, digitally inked by the comic’s director of design & production Mark Roslan, colored by Beth Sotelo, and lettered by editorial assistant Josh Reed with the production assistance by Chaz Riggs & John Ercek! There are 4 variant covers; cover A by Alex Konat & John Starr, B by Paul Renaud, C by J. Scott Campbell, and the limited edition of cover D by Peter Steigerwald & Konat! I got cover B which depicts Aspen in the crustacean – motif bikini amidst the helix swirl of water! The lovely & sporty swim wear, and the sexy exotic Blue couture are other great aspects of the comics!

In issue #1 she was busy with the job offers, an oil spill, and then had to investigate a mysterious giant ice wall that formed in the tropical waters near Belize, and issue #2 starts with her undersea battle with the chaps who created the wall! They escape, so later she swims to magnificent luminous undersea city of Muria to discuss the situation with the Elite Council. Kiani’s father Killian meets her, but in the Arctic Ocean we find out what has happened to widdle Anya who has grown a lot, whilst another ice wall mysteriously appears at The Grand Canyon! The lavishly beautiful character, scenery & FX are  rendered with such rich colors!; the fonts nicely reveal the dialogue, thoughts & sound FX; and the page layout is quite interesting with the wide, vertical, large panels & several full – page pics to convey the lush locations, vast depths & significant moments! I am curious as to what will happen next, and we hope that Anya will be rescued & reunited with her family! Now herw is Becca to tell us about

The Fearless Defenders #8!

Becca:

Hai! The Defenders are one of Marvel Comics’ oldest super hero teams with many rosters over the decades since 1971, but this year it is the partnership of Heroes For Hire’s Misty Knight and long-time member Brunhilde the Valkyrie! Also in the club are fellow valkyrie / the X-Men’s Dani Moonstar, Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons, and the delightful rookie valkyrie Dr. Annabelle Riggs! We have not seen much of the valkyries’ pegasus horses of late though. but there have been lots of guest starring heroines, such as Clea the sorceress in last month’s issue and Elsa Bloodstone the monster hunter in this issue! The series has been thrilling fun with plenty of the witty, powerful and dramatic moments, and the recurring villainess Caroline LeFay, the daughter of Dr. Doom and Morgana LeFay!

She is recruiting the bad grrls for her own evil team! I am particularly fond of the art and the clever covers by Mark Brooks such as the “action figure” cover for #2, the “tattoo” cover for #3, the “papurr doll” cover for #4, the “video game” cover for #5, the “horror comic” homage for #6, the “billboard” cover for #7 and this issue’s Valkyrie “character design” cover! Issue #8 It is purriced $3.99, and sammiched within the covers are the 28 pages comprised of the 5 pages of the ads, the 2 pages of readers & editor’s comments, the amusing recap / credits page and the 20 page tale! It was written by Cullen Bunn, edited by Ellie Pyle, drawn by Will Sliney, colored by Veronica Gandini and lettered Clayton Cowles! #8 is technically the 9th issue, if you include #4AU which was connected to Marvel’s Age of Ultron tale!

Purreviously, Annabelle was resurrected from Valhalla, but the purrice of the magick is that the bodies of Annabelle & Brunhilde cannot co-exist at the same time, so they have to swap! This issue starts with the bang as Misty amewsingly beats up the uncoopurrative thugs in New York’s China Town, during The Defenders’ investigation of the murders & monsters, which is why they have just recruited Elsa to help! Misty’s lip gloss matches her sexy bare midriffed shiny Red vinyl outfit with the brown padding, belt & holsters to match he rlovely mocha skin tone, and the triple Golden earrings to match her gleaming bionic right arm! Elsa’s Red earrings & Orange bare – midriff outfit match her long Red hair, with the Black leather coat, gloves, thigh boots, choker & belt to match the pump shotgun!

Annabelle is purrky & cute with the glasses & under-stated Brown ensemble of the Brown pullover, jeans, boots & White tee! As they follow the monster trail into the subway tunnels, Annabelle transforms into Brunhilde, who debuts the mew sleeveless Black & Blue costume with the furry boots, the Brown straps, belt, bracers, gauntlets & scabbards to match the hilt of her swords! The larger sword seems to be the 2-handed bastard Sword, which is about 5′ long from the pommel to the tip! The trail leads them to the secret subterranean lair of the Order of the Hai Dai villains and their boss lady Zheng Bao Yu, whose expurriments breed the icky mewtant strains of the awful Brood aliens for the sinister purrpose! Yu is the sister of the hero Shang – Chi and the daughter of the evil Dr. Fu Manchu!

She has the mystic, scientific, and martial arts purrowess, but I hope she is not as tough as her brother! She wears the Purrple ink upon her hands, arms, legs & feet, muchly revealed by the sultry ankle-length tight Green dress slit to the waist with the ornate dragon on the hem, draped slit sleeves, matching sash, mandarin collar & hat! She is displeased by the intrusion, but boastfully welcomes the challengers to the fight! To complicate the plot, No-Name of Brood arrives to help shut down the villains’ opurration! It is the awkward moment those Broods aliens are not known to be friendly, and although Elsa is untrusting, Annabelle detects the difference! Even if they manage to thwart Yu and the Hai Dai, they still have not yet appurrehend Caroline LeFay who is busy with her evil plans!

This was another fun issue full of the witty banter, dark humor & combat of the heroines who are nicely posed & expurressive amidst the intricately detailed clothing, coiffures, hardware and scenery!

I purrticularly like the color & graphic FX from the crepuscular rays of sunlight through the skyscrapurr windows & the flashlights in the tunnels, to the luminous mystical transformations, auras & spells! The fonts very effectively convey the visceral sound FX, which is purrticularly good for the off-panel action, and the storytelling of the sequential art is helped by the variety of the large, panoramic, diagonal, borderless and the full-bleed panels! I will give this issue the grade of the “A” as in Annabelle! “A” is also for Angela who appurrs in the next Marvel Comic which Lizzy will tell us about,

Guardians of the Galaxy #5!

Elizabeth:

Hai! The Guardians of the Galaxy is one of Marvel Comics’ great supurr teams, which has been fighting against the intergalactic threats in various incarnations, rosters & series since 1969! Their series was relaunched again in March and stars the Guardians team of Starlord, Iron Man, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax & Groot! The comic book is priced $3.99, rated T+, written by Brian Michael Bendis, colored by Justin Ponsor, lettered by Cory Petit, edited by Stephen Wacker, assistantly edited by Ellie Pyle, and illustrated by the various artists. This issue was illustrated by Sara Pichelli, who with Justin Ponsor also purrvided one of the 12 different beautiful covers! This issue was also consulted by Neil Gamin, and the character Angela who he co-created with Todd McFarlane also appurrs in this issue!

She first appurred 20 years ago in the tale of “Angela” in Spawn #9 which was written by Neil Gamin, drawn by Todd McFarlane, by published by Image Comics and included the poster of her by Jim Lee! Angelia is the bounty – hunting warrior angel with the fiery Red hair to match her tempurr, the Golden bikini armor with the wide belt for her huge sharp weapons, accessorized by the boots, gauntlets, winged helmet, the long flowy tassles and the loin cloth! We have a few action figures of her! She is displeased so suddenly find herself in the different universe, but it is the impurressive entrance in the two-page spurread! There are several panoramas & large pics in the issue which includes the 20 page tale plus the recap/ credits page, the comments / cover gallery page, and the 6 pages of the ads!

She wound up there due to the disturbances in the multiverse which were caused by time – travel repurrcussions in Marvel’s recent Age of Ultron story! While Angela angrily looks for answers in the deep space, on the Guardians’ space ship there is amewsing banter between Rocket Racoon & Tony Stark as they repair his armor, but Gamora is the other dangerous woman with the weapons & displeased mood! She is unhappy because Tony tried to romance her, the enemy Spartax fleet is hunting for them, and Starlord & Drax have gone off somewhere! She wears the tight Black pant suit with the White bodice and Green piping to accent her hair, skin & eyes! Meanwhile, Starlord is being chased by the Spartax soldiers through the streets of the planet Rigel 7, where he is rescued by his friend Mantis!

Mantis first appurred in 1973, 2 years purrior to Gamora’s debut, so this is her 40th anniversary! Like Gamora she is the powerful fighter with the gorgeous Green skin! She has the cute antenna, and wears the purretty White off-shoulder dress of the plunging neckline and the slit sides, with the fingerless gloves and Gold belt! In another impurressive panoramic scene she uses her telepathy to help his mind which is confuzzled by those disturbances! Drax who also has the Green skin is the other purrson looking for answers, and he is about to go medieval on the interrogated purrisoner from the enemy Badoon who is Green too! Back on the Guardian’s ship, there are more dazzling graphics & FX as they meet Angela, which results in the low gravity fierce lunar sword fight between her and Gamora!

The final page is the full page pic with the big surpurrise, but I will not spoil it! This was a good issue with the beautifully rendered characters, garments, mecha, scenery, graphics & FX with the beautiful color & lighting qualities! The poses, expurressions, intricate details & the page compurrsitions are all great, and the tale had the amewsing dialogue, the brisk pace, and the good mix of the mystery, humor, suspense, action & cosmic developments! I just have the one copy and did not try to collect the 11 variant covers by Milo Manara, Paul Renaud, Adi Granov, Scottie Young, Brandon Peterson, Mark Brooks, John Tyler Christopher, Julian Totino Tedesco, Paolo Rivera, Mike Deodato & Rain Beredo, Rachel & Terry Dodson! That concludes my review, and nyow here is Tara-chan to start the

My Little Pony Portion of The Mew,

with her review of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #10

Tara-chan:

Arigato Nya! We love the pony cartoon, the toys, and the pony comic books from IDW have been among my favoritest comics for several months, nya! Issue #10 is purriced $3.99 with the uninterrupted 22 page tale followed by the 2 pages of Big Mac’s scrap book pics and – and the 8 pages of the ads, nya! Big Mac is the older brother of Applejack and –  Apple Bloom, who in the purrior issue went into Ponyville to purrchase nails for the gazebo repairs but was greatly distracted by the town’s festival, so his situation is continued in this issue, nya!  There are the 3 mane variant covers plus the 6 other rarer retailer exclusive covers, nya! Cover A is by Andy Price who also drew the tale, Cover B is by Tony Fleecs, Cover C is by Katie Cook who wrote the tale, nya!

The 6 rarer covers were purrduced for various stores or events such as Larry’s Comics, JetPack Comics, Hot Topic and the Fan Expo, nya! Displayed on the inside covers are the small pics of the different cover art, nya! The tale was lettered by Neil Uyetake, colored by Heather Breckel, and edited by Bobby Curnow who all did the supurrb job, nya! In this issue, Mac’s purrogress continues to be delayed due to all of the activities that he gets lured into, and the incidents of the Cutie Mark Crusaders but I think it looks like much fun with all the foods, mewsic, games, purrformances, arts, exhibits, and items, nya! There are great clever visual jokes, homages and – and the purrodies including the Star Trek “Archons” bit, the James Bond bit, nya!

There are also the fillies of the romantic interest such as Fleetfoot, the lovesick wonderbolt pony so I hope they might be the cute couple, nya! Mac winds up involved with Sapphire Shore’s dance, Photo Finish’s photo oppurrtunity but he also gets the good advice from Zacora, nya! Also appurring in the story or upon the cover are are the mane six, Spike, Angel, Winona, Cherilee, Snips, Snails, Flim, Flam, Lugnut, Trixie, Lyra Heartstrings, Dr. Hooves, Derpy, DJ Pon-e, Octavia, Sweetie Drops, Rose, Minuette, and the many other ponies it is fun to try to identify, nya! his was another supurrb issue with the purrfect plot, pace, dialogue, humor, poses, gestures, expurressions, details and – and the spirit that faithful to the spirit of the animated TV series, nya! Nyow I would like to discuss

My Little Pony Micro-Series #7, nya!

Tara-chan:

This series focuses upon the different pony purr issue; the purrevious ponies were Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, and nyow it is the Cutie Mark Crusaders’ turn, nya! They are the trio of the younger filies Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, and – and Applejack’s younger sister Applebloom, who are all hoping to figure put their best skills to earn their cutie marks, which often results in the wacky fun reckless adventure, nya! Purrhaps y’all have seen Scarlett Edward’s adorable painting of Applebloom in the mewseum, nya? They have the tree club house, the crusader capes, and – and the wagon to carry the things they might find, nya! This issue is purriced $3.99, with the 22 page tale followed by the 10 pages of the mews and – and the ads, nya!

The tale was written by Ted Anderson, illustrated by Ben Bates, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Bobby Curnow, Amy Meberson, with the choice of the 7 different covers by Sara Richardson and – and  Ben Bates, nya! Five of those are only available at certain stores such as Larry’s Comics, and – and Jetpack Comics, nya! I have Cover B which depicts the Crusaders surpurrised to see two Winona pups, nya! Winona is the Apple family dog, but one of these Winonas is actually Imp, the playful young gem-like shape- changing Mimicker who the crusaders meet during their wilderness expurrdition, nya!

At first Rarity and – and Spike think it is the purrecious gem stone, but Twilight Sparkle determines that it is the Mimicker, who the trio names Imp and then induct as the mewest crusader, nya!

The young Mimickers try out the different forms until they settle upon the final form as the adult, so the ponies suggest the various forms such as the toys, the instruments, the clothes, the vehicles and – and the critters, but they get carried away and it becomes too frustrating for poor Imp, nya! It is the bittersweet tale of the mysterious discovery, the zany fun, the sad parts and – and the responsibility, nya! This was another charming, fun, poignant, purretty issue with the very faithful spirit to the TV show, nya! Some of my favorite scenes are the club house, the cave, the boutique, the library, and – and the big flea market, nya! I will give both pony comics the “A” as in the apples, and – and I am looking forward to the next issue which will star Purrincess Celestia, nya! Nyow here is onee-chan to tell us about the

My Little Pony Treasury Edition, nya!

Yvonne:

Arigato, nya! We love the My Little Pony animated TV series, the books, comics, the toys, the cards, and the tempurrary Cutie Mark tattoos, nya! There have been some cute recent releases too, such as the mini-figures babysit set of Pinkie Pie, Nurse Redheart and- and the Cake Family; the mini-figures school lessons set of Cherilee, Twistaloo, Silver Spoon and Smarty Pants; the Princess Celebration car assortment set with Spike, Rarity, winged Princess Twilight Sparkle and the widdle accessories; and the line of the Equestria Girls fashion dolls, nya! Onee-chan will discuss the movie, but to return to the comics, IDW has published the 8.5″ x 13″, 72 page (including the covers) trade papurrback, which repurrints the comic’s 1st issue tale plus much of the cover art, nya!

It includes the uncolored version of “The Return of Queen Chrysalis” plus the 48 full – color pages that repurrint the variant covers from that story arc’s 4 issues, nya! It is larger than the comic books’ size of 8.5″ x 13″, with the artist’s name is in the small uppurr corner triangle. but – but without the logos nya! The 22 page tale was drawn by Andy Price, lettered by Robbie Robbins, edited by Bobby Curnow, designed by Neil Uyetake, and written by Katie Cook, nya! Applejack, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Twliight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and Spike had to rescue Applebloom, Sweetie Belle and  Scootaloo from wicked Queen Chrysalis and The Changelings, however this edition repurrint does not include that 1st issue’s bonus 2 pages by Cook, or any of the advertisements, nya.

We reviewed that 1st issue in the December 2012 Mew, nya! Afterwards are the 48 pages of cover art by Cook, Price, Tony Fleecs, Amy Mebberson, Jill Thompson, Stephanie Buscema, Melanie Tingdahl, Amanda Connor with Paul Mounts, Scott Campbell with Nei Fuffino, nya! Those lovely images include the Mane Six ponies, The Cutie Mark Crusaders, The Purrincesses, Queen Chrysalis, Spike, Derpy, Dr. Hooves, DJ Pon-3, and Angel, nya! Some are the two-page spurreads, and include the 6 covers which connect to form the panoramic scene, although to recreate that scene with this book, you have to buy two copies because the art is on the both sides of the pages, nya! It is interesting to compurr the Black & White art to the pages that were colored by Heather Breckel, nya! Nyow I will discuss

My Little Pony Cover Gallery #1, nya!

Yvonne:

The pony comics published by IDW have the beautiful cover art, but it could be purricey & difficult to collect all of the variant covers of each issue because there are a bunch and many were exclusive to certain locations, so if you have one copy of each story this is the more affordable way to start to collect the array of variant cover art, nya! This regular comic book size of 8.5″ x 13″ issue is purriced $3.99, with the glittery logo, 32 pages plus the covers, no ads, and includes the repurrints of 34 images from both of the Pony comics series by IDW, nya! These images are not the same as the ones repurrinted in the Treasury Edition, so there is not the duplication, nya! The artist’s credit is in the small uppurr corner triangle, but otherwise the repurrinted art does not have the logos, numbers or the purrices, nya!

The 34 full – color images include one cropped pic, the 27 full bleed / full page pics and the 3 two – page spurreads which were wraparound cover art, nya! The images depict individual ponies or the groups, including the Mane Six ponies, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, the Purrincesses, Spike, Granny Smith, Big McIntosh, Shining Armor, Derpy, DJ Pon-3, Lyra Heartstrings,Trixie, Dr. Hooves, The Wonderbolts, Angel, Winina, Opalescence, Tank and other characters, nya! It includes one pic apiece by Sabrina Alberghetti, Stephanie Buscema, Brenda Hickey, Ben Bates, Andy Price, Amy Mebberson & Stephanie Buscema; 2 pics by Agnes Gabowski, 4 pics by Sara Richard, 5 by Andy Price, the 5 by Tony Fleecs which include the 3 two – page spurreads, and the 11 by Amy Mebberson, nya!

The 3 two – page spurreads are the Fluttershy ‘Frog Purrincess / Little Mermaid’ scene, the Apple Jack & Apple Bloom ‘Paul Bunyan’ scene, and the romantic Big McIntosh & Fleetfoot ‘Mt. Olympus’ scene, nya! In addition to the inspurrations by the faerie tales, myths & folklore there are the few homages to the great masters such as nouveauish pic of Celestia & Luna, the Tank & Rainbow Dash homage to Frank Frazetta’s “Death Dealer”, and the psychedelic Rarity pic reminiscent of the 1960’s concert posters, nya! There are also the fun homages such as the genie Rarity, Transformers Pinkie Pie, and the Adventures in Babysitting poster purrody with Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, Pound Cake & Pumpkin Cake, nya! OK I am all done, and nyow here is Myayr to review The Elements of Harmony:

The Official My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Guide Book, nya!

Mary Nyan:

Arigato, Vonny! In addition to the comics, there have been other delightful pony publications such as My Little Pony & My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Busy Books with the figurines which we reviewed in June, the Under the Sparkling Sea storybook with the Sea Ponies which we reviewed last month; the various other widdle story and activity books! Nyow I would like to discuss this official book which is the ultimate companion to the TV show! Priced at $17.00 in the USA & $19.00 in Canada, this  8 1/4″ x 6 1/8″ hard bound book with the outer papurr wraparound jacket  was authored by Brandon T. Snider, and published by Little, Brown & Company! The book’s jacket design is by Steve Scott, and the ornate case art by Ross Stewart looks like the book you might find in Ponyville’s Golden Oak Library!

The 256 full color pages are peppurred by the comments by the creators of the show such as the writers, producers, artists, designers, & directors, and graced by the hundreds of illustrations, such as the design sketches, the color renderings, the scenes from the episodes, and the opening 14 Equestria legend paintings! Following those are the introduction by the TV show’s supurrvising director Jayson  Thiessen & story editor Meghan McCarthy, and the Forward by My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’s creator Lauren Faust, prior to the 51 pages that introduce the ponies, their friends, enemies & the magick! Then we are treated to the travelogue of the wonderful map & details of the different regions of Equestria, and the 8 page interview with Lauren purrior to the 132 page guide to seasons 1-3!

After that are the 33 pages of the song lyrics with the annotations, and the 7 page parting discussion of the pony popularity & fandom! it is not a complete encyclopedia to mention every character or cutie mark, nor does it include the generations of My Little Pony purrior to the 2010 Friendship is Magic era or the Equestria Girls movie. The book does not purrtain to the voice acting & technical purroduction aspects of the show, or the toys & merchandise, but the creative, story & design purrocess are discussed, and I think it is the extremely thorough, informative, entertaining & beautiful pony book, to which I will give the grade of the “A” as in Apple Buck, and the high recommendation to our fellow pony fans! Nyow to top off our pony purroducts portion of The Mew, I would like to discuss the

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls Movie & DVD!

Mary Nyan:

Arigato! For our review of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 1 DVD, please see the May Mew, and for our review of the Season Two DVD please see the June Mew! We have been eagerly anticipating the Equestria Girls movie, which is the animated movie canonically set after the 3rd season of the TV series! The movie purremiered in the very limited theatrical Summer release, and it was released upon the home video last month! The plot purrtains to Twilight Sparkle whose magickal crown has been stolen by the rival Sunset Shimmer and sent to the alternate world of their human counterparts, where the purrincess must learn to function in the human body, with Spike in the puppy form, and retrieve the crown with the help of her friends at school before it is too late!

The 73 minute movie was written by Meghan McCarthy, directed by Jayson Thiessen, art directed by Ridd Sorensen, edited by Mark Kuehnel, executively purrduced by Stephen Davis, Chris Bartleman and Kristen Newlands, purroduced by Sarah Wall and Devon Cody, with the mewsic by William Anderson and Daniel Ingram, with the animation by DHX Media and Hasbro Studios nya! The voice cast includes Tara Strong as Twilight Sparkle, Ashleigh Ball as Applejack and  Rainbow Dash Andrea Libman as Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy Tabitha St. Germain as Rarity, Luna and Mrs. Cake, Cathy Weseluck as Spike, Nicole Oliver as Celestia and Cheerilee, Britt McKillip as Cadance, Rebecca Shoichet as Sunset Shimmer, Vincent Tong as Flash Sentry, and the movie’s voice director was Terry Klassen!

The singing vocalists included Rebecca Solchet as Twilight Sparkle, Shannon Chan-Kent as Pinkie Pie & Kazumi Evans as Rarity! There are other familiar characters in the movie too, such as the human versions of Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, Big McIntosh, Granny Smith, Trixie, Snips, Snails, DJ Pon-3, Photo Finish, Derpy & others! I purrticularly liked the costume pony ears & tails worn for the “Cafeteria Song” dance! It is interesting how the ponies have changed over the years, especially Twilight Sparkle as the mew purrincess with the wings! I thought the movie was a charming sweet fun with great characters of the positive, optimistic outlook and the friendship theme, including the whimsical human versions of the Cutie Mark Crusaders!

It has the great quality of the voices, art, animation, and the ending! The Region 1, NTSC standard DVD has the movie plus the few bonus features in the no-frills case, with the purretty front cover art of Twilight Sparkle in her two forms, and the back cover art of the mane 8 characters in their alternate forms! There is no booklet or poster inside the box, aside from the small flyer ad for various pony purroducts! The movie purrsented in the widescreen format of the 1.78:1 aspect ratio and the audio is unsubtitled spoken English language in 5.1 stereo surround. Purrior to the mane menu are the quick front-loaded logos for Shout Factory, Hasbro Studios, the cute ad for the Littlest Pet Shop DVD, and amongst the bonuses there is the 30 second ad for Hanazuki!

The bonuses include the purrintable movie poster which requires the computer DVD Rom and the purrinter, the 1 minute long “Ponify Yourself” coiffure video, the three widdle featurettes about the movie, and the karaoke versions of the movie’s “Cafeteria Song” and the “Friends for Life” song! Those two pop songs are close to 2.5 minutes apiece, and the karaoke technique has the color changing lyrics text to follow against the kaleidoscopic background! One of the three featurettes is just over 4 minutes long with Daniel Ingram and Hasbro Studio’s Vice Purresident of Development Mike Vogel who chat about the the remix of the show’s main title song and the movie’s pop songs! The 2nd featurette is the nearly 6 minute long discussion of the character designs and the school scenery!

That part has the comments by Tara Strong, Meghan McCarthy, Jayson Thiessen, Mike Vogel, Ridd Sorensen & character designer Kara Kasicka! We get to see her digitally draw the character! The longest featurette is the appurroximately 12.5 minute discussion of the movie, with comments by Tara, Meghan, Jayson, Mike & Stephan! The featurettes are very interesting but their total length is under 25 minutes, so I wish there was much longer documentary, or other extras such as commentaries, galleries, or a booklet, but I am very pleased with the movie which is the very different tale for the ponies! We are hoping for the TV show’s 3rd season to be released on DVD too! That is all of the pony portion of this month’s Mew, but we still have the few

More Book & Manga Mewsings,

so here is Trini-chan to discuss K-ON! College!

Trini-chan:

Arigato! K-ON! is the manga & anime series, which purrtains to the girls who form the pop music band called the After School Tea Time. The word K-ON is an abbreviation of Kei-Ongaku which rmeans light or pop / rock mewsic,! In K-ON! volumes 1 – 4 the girls were in high school and now they are in college! It was written & drawn by Kakifly who knows a lot about the music, it was originally published in Japan by Houbunsha, and it is published in North America by Yen Press! This College volume is priced $11.99 in the USA & $12.99 in Canada, and has the 128 pages, including the 32 color pages, the bonus cartoons, sketches and translation notes! The book reads from right to left, it was translated into English by Stephen Paul, lettered Lys Blakeslee, and it is intended for the older teen readers!

The wraparound cover depicts the quartet of guitarist Yui, bassist Mio, drummer Ritsu, keyboardist Tsumugi; and the Only Girlz trio whom they meet in college, comprised of guitarist Akira, bassist Sachi & drummer Ayake! Each group wears the shorts outfits with the sandals & logo tee shirts, and there are numerous pics of them in other cute outfits! Mio wears the cat – eared maid costume in one panel! Yui, Ritsu, Mio and  Tsumugi are glad to be living close to each other but Yui still has the lazy habits! In adjusting the college life away from home with clubs and part – time jobs to consider, they meet Akira, Sachi and Ayumi, although Akira is the less cordial rival guitarist and thinks Yui is odd! Some of the topics include the snacks, cooking, shopping, yearbooks, instruments, hair cuts, and their bra sizes.

They go to music camp with the onsen, and compete in the battle of the bands! When Yui goes visits home we see her younger sister Ui, their mom, and friend Nodoka. We do not see their friends Azusa, Jun or Sawaka-sensei, although Ui is in the band with Azusa & Jun who we will follow in the forthcoming High School volume!  The delightfully fun K-ON! manga is of 4 koma (panel) format, for abundant quick gags like a newspaper comic strip. mostly in 2 columns of 4 panels per page. The art is of the precise line art & tone with, and the color pages are especially nice. Occasionally there are cartoonier “supurr – deformed” styles of comedic expressions and the widdle chibi – style heads of characters for the aside comments for the cute comedic effect! Now I will go from the K-ON to the Kanokon of the

Kanokon Omnibus 3-4!

Trini-chan:

Kanokon is the supernatural romantic comedy tale of Chiziru the Sophomore girl who is actually the frisky fox girl with amorous intentions for Kouta, the freshman lad who recently discovered that Kunpu Academy is populated the yokai who pose as the human students! Kouta’s life would be complicated enough at school, but now he has the flirtatious fox girlfriend, romantic rivals, and powerful enemies! Based upon Katsumi Nishino’s light novels, the manga is written by Nishino & illustrated by Rin Yamaki, it was originally published in Japan by Media Factory, and published in North America by Seven Seas! We reviewed the anime adaptation in the April 2011 Mew! This thick paperback is priced $18.99 in the USA & $21.99 in Canada, and collects the mostly Black & White 326 pages of volumes 3 & 4!

That includes the manga chapters 6 – 11, 6 color pages, the bonus cartoons, sketches & character notes! It is charming, romantic & zany but with some serious & violent situations, and suggested for the older teen readers due to the nudity, sexuality, language, violence and “fan service”! The book reads from right to left, it was translated by Ryan Peterson, adapted by Shannon Fay, lettered by Ma. Victoria Robado, proofread by Rebecca Scoble and edited by Adam Arnold, with the cover design by Nicky Lim! The front cover depicts the amusing embraced pose of Chiziru the voluptuous 5′ 7″ Honey Blond fox girl with Nozomu the petite 5’1″ Platinum Blonde wolf girl! Nozomu is the seductive rival to complicate Chizuru & Kouta’s relationship, and her rebellious biker brother Saku is of the adversarial intent!

Nozomu adds to the ribaldry & nervous tension, whilst Saku adds the combative danger as the challenging outsider who thinks the school’s secretive nature is oppressive to the yokai spirit! It is the shame because Chizuru & Kouta seem truly in love, and there seemed to be a general harmony settling upon the school, but it adds to the comedy, drama & action! The disruptions also bothers Chiziru’s brother Tayura, home room teacher Sahara – sensei, coach Yatsuka – sensei, class president Akane, Kumada the big bear spirit, nosey wealthier friends Yooks & Kiriko, cute widdle frog spirit Mio & her boyfriend Omi! There are many amusing & sexy images, and the art is pretty with the very well – rendered kemonomimi, clothing, classrooms, combat, cuisine & comedic bits! Nyow here is Bunnibun to tell us about

Dragonbreath: The Case of the Toxic Mutants!

Petra

Along the way there are mewsings & delightful images of various creatures & subterranean locations, but I do not wish to reveal more of the mystery plot, nya! It is the neat, fun tale peppurred by the ironic, poignant environmental issue, and we learn about Danny’s gemology expurrtise, nya! There is also the bonus page of the Dragonbreath Create – Your – Own – Comic winner’s art, nya, so we wish to congratulate the winner Kristin and the honorable mentions of Samantha & Sage, nya! Gosh The Dragonbreath series is already up to volume 9, nya! I give all nine of them the high purraise, and  I will recommend the book fans of the anthropomorphic tales & art! Purrhaps y’all have seen her other illustrations in our mewseum, nya? Rebecca rendered this lovely image using Photoshop CS2 and the Intuos3 Tablet, nya! However, this purrticular faerie is the strawberry Pocky thief, so we will be careful lest she purrloin the unattended Pocky, nya!

Nextly is another illustration by Rebecca, “Midnight Dance”, which she created with the mewer Photoshop CS6 and the Intuos5 tablet, nya! This beautiful image depicts her own fantasy character Eamane dancing the night away at the late night rave, nya! Later in the morning she will purrk up with the yummy kona coffee, nya! Eamane is a free – spirited catgirl who lives further inland in a tranquil cottage with the rosy garden frequented by the various critters, nya! Aside from the gardening & dancing, her hobbies include hiking through the maritime forest, fishing from the pier, getting pampurred at the spa, watching anime from her sofa, visiting friends, and playing the D&D games, nya!

The widdle birthday kitten girl is so happy & grateful for the fun, food & gifts!

Tara-chan:

Nyow I am craving the treat, between the Strawberry Pocky and – and the birthday cake, nya!

Perhaps the images of the pocky and the cake will entice visitors to the mewseum cafe, heehee!

Mike:

Thank you for introducing the new art!

Petra:

Dooitashimaste, nya! And nyow here is Mike to purrsent his

Librari-Con 2013 Report, nya!

Mike:

Librari-Con is a wonderful annual free, one day mini-con at the Cumberland County headquarters Library on in Fayetteville, NC, on the mainland not far from historic  Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base! It is a family – fun con full of  great charm & spirit and increasing in attendance every year! This year it convened from 10 am to 5 pm at the lovely library on the sunny Saturday, August 31st, 2013, and I was told there were close to 1300 folks in attendance! It is primarily an anime / manga con, but the programming also includes comics, science fiction & fantasy topics, cosplay, videos, activities & performances! The activities were on the 1st floor, 2nd floor and front steps, with several hundred cosplayers representlng characters of anime, comics, games, movies & TV!

The costumes included many anime & manga, video games, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Marvel, DC, furries, catgirls, Homestuck, elegant lolita dresses & yukatas! The Carolina Garrison of the 501st Legion of Stormtroopers were there again, along with Jedi, rebel & Mandalorian cosplayers, with their great presentation & Star Wars trivia! Other costume activities included the Zombie Squad, Lolita panel, and the cosplay runway. Our friends & past guests sisters Thais & Natalia Lopes were there again in their gorgeously opulent dresses as their mom & dad helped at their artist alley table full of ribbons, keychains, magnets cards & prints! The artist alley had about 20 tables full of books, art trinkets, plushies & fashionable accessories, other organizations’ representatives, and the Friends of the Library book sale!

There was an author’s reading, art & writing advice panel, karoke, live music & imrov comedy performances! and the Chibi Corner full of activities, arts & crafts for little children & their parents! Other discussion topics included a parental guide to manga,  ghosts & haunts in manga, Vocaloids, Touhou, Hetalia, Japan travel, the Firefly panel, and the Doctor Who panel! Gaming included the chess, Angry Birds & Marvel role play game; video screenings included Electric man, Sweet Blue Flowers, You’re Under Arrest, and Rideback! Everyone seemed so happy & friendly, from the fans of all ages to the very cordial, caring, helpful event staff & volunteers! I would like to thank all of the folks who helped to make Librari-Con such a joyfully fun event again, and I hope that I can attend again next year!
