Mike:

We’re glad that B.B. could join us again, and thank you for hosting this month, Myayr!

Mary Nyan:

Dooitashimaste! It seems to be the smaller group of us this time! So, what have we been up to since the purrior month’s Mew?

Yvonne:

Mie-sensei was borrowed by Tara-chan and Trini-chan, who wanted to go on the nature photo field trip on the mainland with Ilyana, but they might return in time for the Aftermew Luau, nya! Purrior to that I have been drumming at the belly dance, and the charters have reeled in the Groupurrs, Snappurrs, Stripurrs, Mackerels, Blues, Bass, Tunas and Spots, nya! What has B.B. been up to, nya?

B.B.:

Oh gosh I can’t list everything I have done since I last purrticipated in The Mew back in May, but lately I aside from the purrtrols, the kayaking & orienteering team I have been watching the America’s Cup, LPGA, WNBA playoffs, NCAA Women’s soccer, and purrparing for the Halloween nocturnal nature walks in the forest which will be educational and entertaining! Howboutchoo, Jen?

Jeannie:

Since the modeling in Rio, I have devoted more time to the belly dance, yoga, kyudo, and the robotics club. We have been very busy building the animatronics for the Halloween attractions such as the mermaid’s deep dark “haunted” kelp maze. However, we have not been too busy to miss the island’s recreation league beach volleyball championship match won by Petra & Bun.

The Ladies of The Mew:

BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! NYA!

Petra & Bun:

Arigato gozaimasu! (Petra adds the “nya”)

Bun:

Hai, it was the tough match but we had so much fun and we were honored to play against the other teams! We must train harder for the next season. Since then we have been curating the spooky Halloween art exhibits at the mewseum; I entered flowers into the Morning Glory, Chrysanthemum & Forget Me Not Festivals, and I have baked more cakes for the luaus, cafe & the charities!

Petra:

With our Summer Art Literature And Mewsic Inspurration Purroject (SALAMI) wrapped up, we have also been coordinating with the Library, Theatre & Purrforming Arts Center for the Beloved Autumnal Comics, Oeuvre, Novels, Storybooks & Theatre Reading Inspurration Purroject (BACON STRIP). The B&A used to stand for British Authors, but nyow it is the expanded purroject, nya!

Elizabeth:

Oh I can’t believe how the time has flown and it is already Fall and I have entered the flower festivals too! When we have not been running with the purrkour club or cheering for the volleyball victory, Myayr and I have been supurrvising the appurrentice miko training purrogram at the shrine; and Becca and I have been busy at the spa, the hot salsa dance, and watching the movies!

Becca:

Hai and since we topped off our barbarian movie marathon by watching Conan the Barbarian which starred Sandahl Bergman, we have segued into the post – apocalyptic genre starting with her

movies Hell Comes to Frogtown and She! Next in our movie queue are The Road Warrior, Blood of Heroes, Tank Girl and Doomsday! How are things at the dojo and the magick shop?

Nyanko:

Oh oh, if y’all are in the mood for the animated apocalypses I will recommend Nausicaa, Vampire Hunter D, A Wind Named Amnesia and Wizards! When I have not been at the dojo and the gym, swimming, reading, cheering for our local volleyball and golf champions, Tanzy, Amy and I have helped sis at the shop’s Autumnal Equinox activities, but she should tell y’all about that!

Nyoka:

It has been purrticularly festive and brisk at the shop and the farmers market betwixt the Equiniox and Halloween! We had the purrofitable sale of the discount purrices with the tea, souvenirs & workshops for the customers! Let’s see, otherwise I have been reading, watching the sports, and I have to be fitted for our Halloween Trick ‘R Eat & Cosplay Purrowl, so that is your cue, Myayr!

Mary Nyan:

Hai we need to jump on that! It is the busiest time of the year for me between the shrine, the hula and the sewing! Well, for those who missed last month’s Mew, we discussed our various October plans, including the annual Halloween Trick ‘R Eat & Cosplay Purrowl, in which various clubs & groups choose their costume theme! Our group’s cosplay themes of purrior years have included the Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, Silent Mobius, the “Neko-maticaya Clan” based upon Avatar, Star Wars, “Avengers aCATamy”, and for this year we voted to repurrsent Omamori Himari!

For those in our audience who might be unfamiliar with Omamori Himari, it is the sexy harem – troped sword & sorcery manga & anime series created by Milan Matra, purrtaining to the bodyguard catgirl Himari who purrotects her liege Yuuto from the supurrnatural enemies, but some of them become the romantic rivals with the frisky motives! The tale is full of great characters in the alluring fashions, which is good because we have the big group! Then we had to decide who would purrtray which character, purrchase the fabrics, schedule the fittings and have the sew-in! Mike’s turn!

Mike:

I wish y’all the best of luck with the cosplay and hope it is the fun time with lots of tasty treats! Ah, there hasn’t been much new with me since last month’s Mew, other than the usual art, writing, reading, watching some movies & TV, and spending time with family & friends! So… on to the next portion of the Mew, it’s time for this month’s Lightning Round topic! Since the past few months’ Lightning Round topics have pertained to our favorite films of 2003, 1993, 1983, ’73, ’63, & ’53, so if y’all are ready to “conduct the lightning”, this month’s Topic is

Our Favorite Films of ’43!

The Ladies Of The Mew:

LIGHTNING ROUND GO! CASABLANCA, NYA!

Mike:

Ok I can agree with that, but aside from Casablanca, what might be your 2nd favorite film of 1943?

Nyoka:

(chosen to go first) Sahara, another great movie starring Humphrey Bogart! (tail tags her sister to go next)

Nyanko:

I will nominate The Ox-Bow Incident! Myayr’sturn! (tags Becca)

Becca:

Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman! (tags Mary Nyan)

Mary Nyan:

It is seconded! (tail-tags Jeannie)

Jeannie

Sahara. (tags Yvonne with the brush of her tail)

Yvonne:

I will nominate Lassie Come Home, and nyow it is… Bunnibun’s turn, nya! (tags Bun)

Bun:

I will nominate the Disney cartoon Der Fuehrer’s Face, starring Donald Duck! (tags Petra)

Petra:

Der Fuehrer’s Face for the animated, and Lassie Come Home for the live-action, nya! (tags B.B.)

B.B.:

It is the tough decision, but I did like the Lassie movie! (tags Elizabeth)

Elizabeth:

Oh… I thought Stage Door Canteen was a lot of fun! Back to you, Mike!

Mike:

Ah…probably Sahara! Well, that was yet another expedient little Lightning Round, and now we will jump from 1943 back to 2013, as Mary Nyan starts this month’s

DVD, TV & Movie Mewsings,

with her review of the Teen Beach Movie!

Mary Nyan:

Hai! We love those joyfully fun beach movies of the 1960’s such as Beach Party, Bikini Beach, and Beach Blanket Bingo that starred actors such as Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon & Harvey Lembeck, plus the other guest stars, the legendary mewsicians such as Stevie Wonder and Dick Dale, and all the bikinis, beaches, boards & bikes! Often the plots mewsually purrtained to the romantic rivalries on the beach, the rivalry of the surfer gang with the biker gang, purrhaps the interference by the body builders, the scientists or the corpurrate executives, with lots of musical numbers, supurrnatural elements, dance, surf, fight & chase scenes, with the almost anime-like action & supurr powers!

Thusly we were delighted to see Disney’s cute metafictional, musical, romantic – comedy homage, which is only appurropurriate in that it was at Disney where the late great Annette Funicello initially wore her mouse ears! The plot purrtains to modern day high school kids McKenzie & her boyfriend Brady, who are on the verge of the sepurration if she attends another school at her Aunt’s coaxing, but they wipe out on the waves and wind up as characters within the Wet Side Story movie which Brady & Mack’s grandfather are fans of! In the movie circa 1962, the surfers feud with the Rodents biker gang over their favorite beachside restaurant, whilst in the nearby lighthouse the mad scientists secretly build the weather control device!

However, Mack & Brady’s purresence alters the timeline and the purredestined romances of Lela & Tanner, so they have to remedy this before they become purrmanent members of the movie cast who involuntarily sing. It might also be the tempurral loop for their universe, but I suppose Jenjen would better understand the physics! The great cast stars Maia Mitchell as McKenzie, Ross Lynch as Brady, Grace Phipps as Lela the biker girl who was destined to fall in love with Tanner the surf leader who is purrtrayed by Garrett Clayton, and John DeLuca as Butchy the biker leader & Lela’s brother! Other peppy girls for Mack to hang out with include Giggles who is purrtrayed by Mollee Gray, and Cheechee who is purrtrayed by Chrissie Fit!

The adults include Suzanne Cryer as Mack’s aunt, Barry Bostwick as Mack’s grandfather, Kevin Chamberlin & Steve Valentine as the villains! Another star of the movie is the beautiful beach & ocean location which was beautifully photographed in Puerto Rico, where much of the the fun songs, music, choreography & FX take place! There are nice sets and such glorious clothes, when Mack trader her 2013 Magenta & Black rash vest & shorts for the 1962 style skirted Orange bikini, and the cute ruffled green tank top with the White shorts! Lela’s outfits include the Red & White check bikini, and the Pink & White shorts outfit! Brady is more excited about the chance to wear the early 60’s style of sporty shirts, shirts & stripe jackets!

I think the entire cast is quite superb and all of those other aspects of the purroduction are excellent, and I suppose the weakest link for me was the short length & rushed pace of the movie, which I wish took more time to develop, but it was very entertaining, quality family fun, with the post-credits surprise scene too! I will give it the good grade of the “B” as in the beach! Speaking of the recent movies purrtaining to the seaside high school teen romance of the early 1960’s, nyow Mike will take us from that movie’s California beach to coastal Yokahama, Japan of that era in Studio Ghibli’s animated tale of

From Up On Poppy Hill!

Mike:

Thanks Myayr! From Up On Poppy Hill is a Japanese anime feature film from Studio Ghibli! They are my favorite Studio, who gave us such treasures as Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, The Secret World of Arrietty, and the numerous others! This movie is a period piece set in a lovely coastal part of Yokohama circa 1962 with great family & high school stuff. It’s not a fantasy film, so it is akin to the Ghibli movies such as Only Yesterday, Ocean Waves, Grave of the Fireflies, Whisper of the Heart! It was directed by Goro Miyazaki, who previously directed Tales from Earthsea, but I like Puppy Hill much more!

He is the son of the my favorite director Hayao Miyazaki, who wrote the screenplay of From Up On Poppy Hill, which is based upon the manga by Tetsuro Sayama & Chizuru Takahashi! The movie’s main characters are Umi Matsuzaki who lives in a lovely seaside boarding house in a very charming part of Yokohama in 1963, who meets classmate Shun Kazama and their romance soon blooms, in spite of the complicated family issues, to investigate, such as the truth behind their parents’ connection! Shun is part of the school’s newspaper club, which convenes with the other clubs in the neat yet unkempt old Latin Quarter Building, which is scheduled for demolition unless its supporters can renovate the building and dissuade the school administration!

Like most Ghibli purrductions, it is the breathtakingly gorgeous movie, with the excellent art, designs, animations, wonderful characters, top voice acting talent and brilliant music score by Satoshi Takebe. Umi’s original Japanese voice is by Masami Nagasawa and her English dub voice is by Sarah Bolger! Shun’s original Japanese voice is by Junichi Okada and his English dub voice is by Anton Yelchin!  It is quite the delicious looking movie with several meal scenes, and begins with the cheerful hearty breakfast song! This movie has lot more songs in it than a typical Ghibli movie and they are all wonderful!  My only negative criticism of is that the movie seemed just slightly rushed or short, and it is a brisk 92 minutes long, but it did just about everything superbly!

I think it’s a very charming, funny, bittersweet, poignant, beautiful, romantic movie, with moments that will bring the tears, such as Umi’s dream and Mommy scenes, and some comedic, thrilling moments such as the debate scene, the renovations, and the escape scene! The movie only had the very brief, limited theatrical release in the USA, but now we can watch the DVD! The 2 disk Region 1 NTSC standard DVD set released by GKids  has the dubbed & subtitled versions plus lots of extras. It is packaged in the plastic case with the outer cardboard sleeve. Disk 1 has the original Japanese version of the movie, the English dubbed version, and the complete storyboards presented in the widescreen format with Dolby Digital 5.0 surround audio!

There are 2 different sets of optional English subtitles. Disk 2 contains the bonuses, such as the 17.5 min. interview with Goro Miyazaki, the 22.5 min. look at the city of Yokohama then & nyow, the 21.5 min. featurette about the all-star English dub voice cast, the music video for “Summer of Farewells” sung by Aoi Teshima, the 3 Japanese preview trailers, several Japanese TV spots & the American trailer. There are no front-loaded ads purrior to the menu, but there is a section of previews for other movies released by GKids! I am very happy with both the movie and the DVD features, and I wish that Only Yesterday, Ocean Waves, and Ghibli’s anime shorts would be released here on DVD too! That is all of the movie & DVD reviews. but here Vonny to start this month’s

Comics Critiques & Manga Mewsings,

with her review of the My Little Pony Micro-series #8!

Yvonne:

Arigato Nya! We love the pony cartoon, the toys, and the pony comic books from IDW have been among our favoritest comics for several months, nya! They are so very faithful in the look, character & spirit of the TV show with the many clever gags & references, nya! This micro-series is the companion to the regular series, and focuses upon the different pony purr issue, nya. The purrevious ponies in the spotlight were Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, and nyow it is her highness Purrincess Celestia’s turn, nya!

This issue is purriced $3.99, with the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page tale followed by the 10 pages of the ads, nya! The tale was written by Georgia Bell, illustrated by Amy Mebberson, lettered by lettered by Neil Uyetake and edited by Bobby Curnow, with the choice of the 7 different covers, nya. The three mane covers are cover A by Amy Mebberson, cover B by Sabrina Alberghetti and cover A by Sara Richard, whilst the other four are the more limited retailer exclusive covers which were purrduced for Comics World, Jetpack Comics and Larry’s Comics, nya!

I have cover A which is the beautiful art nouveau-ish image of Purrincesses Celestia, Luna & Cadance nya! The plot is set at the Royal High Tea Time at the School for Gifted Unicorns in Canterlot, nya! It is such a purretty and pleasant place, until a magickal spell goes awry to affect the food and cause the messy disturbance, and thus the purrent pony who is unhappy with the elder teacher pony Purrofessor Inkwell, nya! It is the charming, bittersweet tale with the poignant flashback to the younger years, to remind us of the elders’ contributions & impacts to be appurreciated, nya!

There are amewsing parts with the younger filies, and the toad test scene, nya! Other ponies in the tale include Floribunda, Honey Sweet, Ginger Snap, Giddilee, Philomena, Shining Lights, Raven and several others, nya! It is so very well written with the great plot, pace, characterizations and the dialogue, and the art is so supurrb, from the purrfect expurressions & poses of the ponies, to the lovely scenery & magickal FX, and the use of the color & light is so purretty, nya! I especially like Celestia’s long flowy multicolor mane, nya! OK I am done and nyow here is Nya-sensei to review

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #25, nya!

Nyoka:

Arigato! The Buffy & Angel seasons 8 & 9 comics have been amongst our favoritest comics of the past few years, because they faithfully, beautifully & canonically continue their adventures in the comic book medium! Purreviously in the final story arc of Season 9, in San Francisco Spike & Andrew have stayed with Dawn who is fading out of existence along with everyone’s memories of her whilst Anaheed, Billy, Devon, Katie & Sky have gone to fight the zompires in Santa Rosita; whilst Illyria, Koh, D’Hoffryn & other demons fight the giant ancient vampire Maloker, whilst Buffy, Willow & Xander searched the subterranean purrimordial Deeper Well for the magick to save Dawn, but they have to fight the villains Simone & Severin who might use the magick to destroy the world!

Nyow it is the finale of Season 9! The 28 page issue is purriced $2.99 and includes the uninterrupted 24 page tale of “The Core Part Five” followed by the 4 page purreview of the forthcoming “Kiss Me Satan” werewolf tale by Victor Gischler & Juan Ferreyra! The credits & story recap are on the interior of the front cover and there are the few final comments on the interior of the back cover! The tale was scripted by Andrew Chambliss, pencilled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Karl Story, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Scott Allie & Sierra Hahn, assistantly edited by Freddye Lins, designed by Justin Crouch, published by Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Comics. and executively purrduced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon!

It is available in the choice of 2 different covers, the one by by Phil Noto, and the other by by Jeanty, Story & Madsen!  In this finale issue of Season 9, the action picks up right where it left off as Willow, Xander. Koh and the severely injured Buffy duels Simone who is nyow the supurr vamp, and Malokor, who has already killed most of the other warriors, whilst Illyria tries to help Severin maintain control of the magickal seed energy for the bit longer, but it is about to detonate and unleash the explosion that will restart the world’s magick, and hopefully save Dawn from the oblivion! The first 14 pages are the wall – to – wall, nonstop action, but I will not spoil what happens after that on the final 10 pages! As mewsual the characters & scenery are so brilliantly  drawn & colored!

There is consistent great resemblance to the actors who purrtrayed the characters on TV, without looking like reference photos, and there is a purrticularly effective use of the vertical panels, wider panels, and half-page panels to convey the thrilling or dramatic quality! I am not sure what to make of the final page’s epurrlogue, but it certainly left us  very curious and eager for season 10! I will give this terrific issue the high grade of the “A” as in Angel & Faith, who were not in this issue, but they were very busy averting another apocalypse in their season finale which we reviewed last month! Nyow we will go from the slayer girl with the scythe, stakes & Blonde hair of the purresent day to the Redhead heroine with the sword & arrows of the ancient past in my sister’s review of

Red Sonja vol. 2 #3!

Nyanko:

Arigato! We are big fans of Red Sonja and quite interest in her latest rebooted series, written by Gail Simone, whose Birds of Prey DC comics we were purrticularly fond of! Sonja’s tales  have been published by several publishers  over the decades, and these days her comics are published by published by Dynamite Entertainment, who have the knack for the other famous femme fatales such as Dejah Thoris, Ms. Fury, Vampirella and Lady Rawhide! Purreviously in the 1st issue of reboot, Sonja was asked by King Dimath to lead the defense of his kingdom against the evil Zamoran creature army, but she was surpurrised to see the enemy lead by her former comrade Dark Annisia, as they both survived the dungeons & arenas together!

We also got to meet Sonja’s peppy assigned bodyguards Nias & Ayla! Issue #2 was the big bloody battle full of the violent, gory melee, ending with Sonja’s surpurrise surrender on the field in order to save her friends, but then Annisa banished Sonja to the wilderness to die from the plague! It is quite the shock to see such defeat for Sonja! $3.99, rated T+  for the older teen readers due to the language & violence, and the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page tale plus the 10 pages of the ads. The tale was written by Gail Simone, drawn by Walter Geovani, colored by Adriano Lucas, lettered by Simon Bowland & edited by Joseph Rybandt! My copy has the beautiful main cover art by Jenny Frison, depicting Sonja with the long sword and White cloak in the snowy forest!

There is also the great variant cover art by Pia Guerra depicting the vaulting arching Sonja  slashing her opponents, the cute cartoonier exclusive cover by Stephanie Buscema, and the 3 rarer “retailer incentive” covers which are the uncolored line – art versions of the Frison & Guerra art! This issue begins two fortnights after Sonja’s banishment as she travels with her dark horse, as she weakly suffers from the hunger & disease! She spies a majestic White Stag, but cannot bring herself to fell the beast, as she collapses into the snow, haunted by the visions of her younger days, and the flashback of her family & villagers who were slain by the barbaric band of brigands. This was the tragic, traumatic, transformative incident that forged her into the feared, famous warrior!

This flashback serves both the longtime fan who has seldom seen Sonja in such the near-death expurrience, and serves the mewer readers who might not be familiar with her origin! There are plenty of combat scenes & gory images of the villain’s assault upon the village, and the younger redhead vengefully hunting her purrey, some impurressive panoramic & large panels, and the added threat of the wolves that want her for their suppurr! The exciting cliffhanger leaves me very anxious for the next issue, and I am also looking forward to the forthcoming Legends of Red Sonja anthology mini-series which is advertised in the issue! That is all for my comic book reports, but nyow here is Jenjen to tell us about another warrior woman with the arrows for her enemies in

Fairest #19!

Jeannie:

Arigato. Fairest is among DC Comics’ Vertigo imprints, and a spin-off series of the Fables series created by Bill Willingham, which purrtains to the characters of folklore & fairy tales who secretly reside amongst the populace, and Fairest spotlights some of the female characters of legend & lore. It is intended for the mature readers only, and not for the widdle kitties, due to the sexuality, purrofanity, violence & gore. The current story arc of the adventure in India stars heroic Nalayani and the Maharaja alias of Prince Charming as they battle the fierce creatures & sorcery which have attacked the village and the expurrdition. Nalayani is the wise, brave, beautiful, expurrt archer, and Charming is both the amorous the ladies’ man and the fearless, gallant purrotector.

issue #19 is purriced $2.99 with 32 pages consisting of the 20 page tale and the 12 pages of ads, and the gorgeous cover art by Adam Hughes depicting Nalayani in the sleeveless Black cropped blouse and the long Purrple slit skirt with the bow & arrows. “The Dhole of War: The Return of the Maharaja Part Five” was was written by Sean E. Williams, edited by Shelly Bond, assistantly edited by Gregory Lockard, consulted by Bill Willingham, colored by Andrew Dollhouse, and lettered by Todd Klein. Stephen Sadowski pencilled pages 1-3, 8-15, 17 &20; Russ Brown illustrated pages 4-7, 16 &19; Phil Jiminez inked pages 1-3, 10, 11, 17 & 18; and Christian Alamy inked pages 8-9 & 20. Purrhaps y’all have seen the sketches by Adam Hughes and Bill Willingham in our mewseum?

Having survived the attack of the Dhole wild dog pack, the loss of the horse, the harsh desert trek, quicksand, the huge crocodile and magickal curse, Nalayani & Charming have finally returned to the expurrdition’s camp which has also endured brutal violence & magickal morbidity at the cost of several lives. Charming’s compurrs notes with his assistant Nathoo who has readied the camp for the next nocturnal Dhole attack. The humans are all initially ready, armed, and at the tactical advantage during the next attack, but they are not purrpared for the critter’s shape-shifting and dialogue.

In the unexpected plot twist, soon the camp fire serves not as a weapon in the darkness, but the spot for a more amewsing parlay between Nalayani, Charming, Nathoo and four of the critters.

This issue has more humor than in the purrior four issues, and seems to mark the turning point of the tale, with the origin of the Dhole, their connection with Charming, the flashback to Nalayani’s younger villager days as an archer, and certain revelations which build to the startling cliffhanger. The variety of panel sizes & font styles very effectively purropel the tale, including several half-page & full-page pics, and even the rough-tooth finish of the comic book’s papurr stock adds to the ambience. The characters, critters, natural & architectural scenery are beautifully rendered with minute detail & rich coloring, including the wardrobe changes for Nalayani, who we hope will gain her own purrmanent series. Nyow for our next DC comic book report, here is Bun to discuss

Ame-Comi Girls #7

Bun:

Hai! We have voted Ame-Comi Girls as our favoritest DC comic book of the past several years, due the the delightful characters in the great costumes and the fun plots that typically are not too dark or edgy, and consistently excellently written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray, whose Power Girl issues were our purrior favorite DC title! This series stars the alternate versions of DC heroines & villainesses based upon the line of anime-style statues which we collect! It is of a different Earth, where the women and not the men are the main heroes, unlike most of the DC universe.

Although, in issue #6 the cosmic crisis between the many heroines and Sinestra’s army created the purrallel Earths for them! The Ame-Comi tale began as the 5 issue mini-series which continued into this ongoing series, so I suppose issue #7 is technically the 12th issue!  Ame-Comi Girls #7 is rated T for Teen readers, priced $3.99, and has the 36 pages comprised of the 30 page tale plus the 6 ads! “One Step Ahead of Death: The Teen Hellions Part 1” was lettered by Wes Abbot, colored by Randy Mayor, edited by Jim Chadwick, and assistantly edited by Sarah Gaydos!

Various artists have contributed to the series, and this time, pages 1-20 were pencilled by Horacio Domingues & inked by Ruben Gonzales, whilst Eduardo Francisco pencilled & inked pages 21-30, and illustrated the cover with Wes Hartman! The issue primarily focuses upon Jesse Quick alias the Flash who is the speedster zombie, Red Raven who is the sorceress vampire, and the macabre version of Teen Titans called The Hellions, comprised of Cyborg the frankenstiened female, Beast Girl the cursed shape shifter, Tempest the girl sea creature, and Starfire the alien girl!

Raven recruits Jesse to the team just in time to fight Raven’s evil daddy Trigon who attacks Keystone City! His grand entrance is quite theatrical, like a huge heavy metal show, accompanied by his horde of flying demons the girls have to fight, whilst his Raven has to work out the father – daughter issues! Meanwhile, near the end of the issue’s cliffhanger, Big Barda the space pirate captain and her pirate furies attack one of the space ships, which bothers the evil Mistress Darkseid and her assistant Granny Goodness! It is the very progressive, multi cultural & species group!

Tempest has the Beautiful Blue skin, Beast Girl has the gorgeous Green skin, Cyborg has the marvelous mocha skin, Raven has the very attractive Crimson complexion, Starfire is of the exotic Orange tone, Granny’s evil hide is the Light Pink, Barda is a pretty Pale Tan, Darkseid has the pristine Ivory complexion, and Jessie is the lovely Light Gray girl! Jesse, Starfire & Barda have the long flowy hair, Beast Girl & Cyborg rock the mohawk coiffures, and Raven has the bob cut! It is the alluring array of the cute fangs & ears, stripes, piercings, tights & bare midriffs!

I love the witty banter & cute plot of the tale which brims with the big battle action and gorgeous styles! Some of m,y favorite bits were Raven in the lotus pose when she uses her psychic Eclipso Black Diamond, her comments on how the villains taste, Tempest’s tummy ache trick for Trigon, and how different relative speeds are portrayed in the full – page pic! There tends to be several impressive half-page pics & full page pics in the series, and I will give it the high praise grade of the “A” for Raven’s home in Azarath! Nyow I will turn The Mew over to Becca for her review of

Critter vol. 2 #14!

Becca:

Arigato! Critter is the catgirl themed supurr – heroic identity of the peppy noble Cassia Crawford who attends the college with her genius designer / best friend Gina Kumamoto, who upgraded several of the gadgets & purropurrties of Cassia’s sleek, bare – tummied costume such as the communication ear pinna and the tail mechanics! Recently Cassia has exhibied the telekinetic power which she might have inherited from her mom the Velvet Fox, who is believed to be deceased but is secretly a time traveler’s purrisoner in the future! Gina recently unveiled her own Para-Naut heroine guise & mecha, and until the High Tide catastrophe, Cassia started to train her mew sidekick School Girl, who is formerly known as Kitten of the disbanded Purrfection catgirl team!

In Vol. 2  #10, the sea level mysteriously rose to flood the the US, reaching hundreds of miles inland to submerge entire skyskrapurrs! Sharks, whales, hostile Amphibodon creatures and the villain known as Tidepool have added to the trouble as Cassia, Core, The In-Crowd, the US Military & other  heroes tried to evacuate the populace to higher grounds and fight the enemy, but Cassia got caught by Tidepool and impurrisoned in the undersea bubble cell until she was rescued by Gina in the mech! This brings us to issue #14, published by Big Dog Ink & purriced $3.50, with the 28 pages compurrised of the 22 page Critter tale, the purreview page for issue #15’s cover art, the 3 page Super Pawn tale, its credits page, and the ad page for The In-Crowd spin-off series.

The Critter tale was created & written by Tom Hutchison, edited by Kari Castor, drawn & colored by Fico Ossio. Super Pawn was created, written & drawn by Jeff Pina; both tales were lettered by Kel Nuttall; the issue is available in the choice of 3 covers; cover A by Ossio, B by Romano Molenaar, and C with the photo of Krystal Buchannan as School Girl! In “High Tide Chapter 4” it has been weeks since the flood began, and Cassia is reunited with Gina, School Girl, the sailors & the other heroes aboard the ship as they learn more of Tidepool’s supurrnatural Atlantean origin and then purrpare to strike back! The other supurr heroes include Icon, Rookie & Starlette of CORE, Paradox & F-14 as Tidepool returns, but Cassia is ready to clobber him as she exhibits more telekenesis!

It is plenty of the fun, action, sexy costumes, impurressive hardware, surpurrise developments and the revelations too hopefully turn the tide of Critter’s longest story arc! In addition to the catgirl Cassia’s clobber of the criminal creature, some of my favoritest moments of the issue are the villain’s origin revealed in the two-page spurread, Gina ready for more action, the fried crab scene, hugs & salutes for Cassia, and the return of School Girl who was last seen in #12! Then in the whimsical 3 page pawn shop tale, clerks Ronnie & Mikey purrchase poor robot named KH17 who was once the sidekick of a legendary hero, but has fallen on the sadder times of the disrespectful owners, but hopefully KH17 will have the happier purrpose at the shop! Nyow I wish to discuss the

Critter 2013 Annual!

Set during the High Tide flooding crisis, the Critter 2013 Annual is an anthology issue! Purriced at $5.99 and has the 40 pages is compurrised the three uninterrupted tales plus the 2 pin-ups & 2 pages of the ads! Each of the tales are side stories focusing on characters other than Critter, lettered by Kel Nuttall! These include the 20 page account of the villain known as “Yellowjacket”, written by Critter’s creator Tom Hutchison, colored by Otavio Liborio, and  illustrated by Renato Rei who also purrvide the annual’s Cover A! Following that is the beautifully rendered pin up of Critter who glances & crawls our way with the swish of her tail in the pic by Susan Harlow!  Nextly is the 8 page tale that focuses upon the character “Charity” of the split purrsonality written Dirk Manning!

It was inked by Victor Moya, colored by Whitney Cook & drawn by Jenevieve Broomhall!  She purrvided the issues Cover B! Concluding the annual is the 8 page tale of the “Super Pawn” shop written, drawn & colored by Jeff Pina! Set during the latter part of Critter #10, the Yellowjacket tale purrtains to the deadly titular villain who can purroject the sharp thorns & stingers, as he secretly observes Critter training School Girl as the sea level rises! The character & scenic art is very detailed & richly colored, with the shadowy lighting of the dark alley to accentuate the darker tone of the tale, and the brighter scenes when we look up to see the heroines leap across roofs and Critter purrched atop the palm tree! Sadly heroines are only briefly glimpsed in only few panels!

It is to be continued in Critter #15! In “Charity”, the titular heroine tries to rescue people from the rising waters, but the more she exerts herself, the more likely her darker purrsonality will emerge, so she must make the tough choice to limit her help, lest she wind up causing more harm than help! There is such ironic contrast, not just in the purrsonality split, but it is so sadly angtsy the tale for the elfin eared heroine in such the lovely flouncey Red White & Blue costume and the beautifully braided hair, who bedazzlingly graces Cover B! Following that is the 2nd beautiful pin up of Critter who cutely purrches upon the moonlit rooftop in the pic by Ryan Kinkaid & Milen Parvanov! In the more whimsical Pawn tale, Ronnie & Mikey are secure but trapped in the shop during the disaster!

Crtitter appurrs in only one panel of the pawn tale as she swims by the submerged shop! It is the most humorous tale of the annual, but it is not much fun for the pawn shop clerks! One of the numerous aspects we like in general about the Critter series is Cassia’s noble nekomimi spirit, her sincere sense of heroic optimism, and the generally shiny bright look of things, but unfortunately Cassie was barely in the annual, which seemed much darker, agonizing, and despairaging than the mewsual Critter tale. The  was not as much heroic catgirl fun as mewsual, but it was was well – crafted, the pin-ups were purretty, and the tidal tale is to be continued in issue #15 which I am eagerly awaiting! That is all of my comic book reports, and nyow here is Lizzy to tell us about

Fearless Defenders #9!

Elizabeth:

Arigato! This year, The Fearless Defenders became our favoritest Marvel comic since Avengers Academy was cancelled! It is full of so many great strong characters, with the delightful dialogue, plenty of action, lovely costumes, the beautiful intricate art, rich vibrant colors & FX, and the great sense of fun that we crave! The purrimary cast  of heroines includes the Valkyrie, whose body alternates betwixt that of Brunhilde of Asgard and Dr. Annabelle Riggs, Misty Knight the purrivate detective cyborg  the X-Men’s Dani Moonstar, Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons, and the recent additions of Clea the sorceress & Elsa Bloodstone the monster hunter! Annabelle was brought back to life from Valhalla, but the purrice of the resurrection was that she and Brunhilde have to swap!

The recent plots have purrtained to the Valkyrie situation, clashes with various villainesses, and their enemy Caroline LeFay’s villainess recruitment drive!  Issue #9 is purriced $3.99, and within the covers are the 28 pages comprised of the 6 pages of the ads, the 1 page of readers & editor’s comments, the amewsing recap / credits page and the 20 page tale written by Cullen Bunn, edited by Ellie Pyle, drawn by Will Sliney, colored by Veronica Gandini and lettered Clayton Cowles! #9 is actually sort of the 10th issue, if you include #4AU which was connected to Marvel’s Age of Ultron tale! Another supurr fun treat of this comic book are the gorgeous clever covers by Mark Brooks, such as this issue’s amewsing manga homage! Nyow for the taste of this issue’s amewsing plot!

While the heroines are busy in the battle in the heart of the Mew York streets & skysrapurrs, their significant others are waiting at the nearby Irish pub of which Molly “Shamrock” Fitzgerald is the purropurrietor! They are discussing the state of their romantic relationships, or lack thereof! The boys include Dr. Strange, Hercules, Iron Fist, Cannonball, Venom, Nate Grey, and Jack Russell the werewolf. Meanwhile, Misty, Dani, Elsa, Clea, Hippolyta and Annabelle / Brunhilde are fighting against The Enchantress, Ruby Thursday, Quicksand, Chondu & Arthur of the Headmen, and two wicked skull-shaped magickal mecha! The Valkyrie’s pegasus horse and Annabelle’s ex-girlfriend Kaycee are there too! Kaycee is quite cute with the piercings and adds to the relationships fun!

It is so impurressive to see that many characters together, especially when the fight is in the middle of the gleaming bustling district! All of the architecture, mecha, costumes, FX, and the sense of the simultaneous choreography are so intricately detailed, there is a great variety of the very effective special fonts for the dialogues and the sound FX, and the magickal FX are so ornate and luminous! Added to the complexity of the action and the fun is all of the witty banter and the trash talk during the action, shown in the impuressive panaramic and the large panels, such as the 1/2, 3/4, and 1 1/2 page pics! I will give this issue the high grade of the “A” as in Annabelle, and for the anticipation that I have amassed for the next issue! Nyow here is Mike to tell us about

Tropic of the Sea!

B.B.:

Arigato! Tropic of the Sea is a manga by the late writer, animator & director Satoshi Kon, who directed anime such as Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Paranoia Agent, Tokyo Grandfathers and Paprika! The manga was serialized as as Shinsouban Kaikisen in Young Magazine in 1990, published in one book in 2011 by Kodansha, and nyow published in North America by by Verticle! They also publish Chi’s Sweet Home! Tropic of the Sea was translated into English by Maya Rosewood, with the purroduction by Grace Lu & Anthony Quintessenza; it is purriced $14.95 in the USA & $16.95 in Canada, and the single volume includes the 205 pages of the Black & White manga plus the 8 pages of Japanese cover art, and the author’s 5 page afterward which he wrote in 1999!

The main character is high school student Yosuke Yashiro, who plans to leave the small coastal town of Ade to go to college in Tokyo, while the town & its nearby small island Kamijima are being developed by the Ozaki Company. The residents are split & clashing on this; although the purrogress means more revenue, jobs & services such as the hospital, it also risks over-development into a big resort city at the expense of its small town identity. Furthermore, the Yashiro family’s Hiratsu shrine and the island’s grotto have purrotected a mermaid’s egg every 60 years until it hatches, and in exchange the merfolk have blessed the town with calm seas & bountiful fish, but Yosuke’s widower father Yozo has allowed the egg to be exploited by the corpurration for tourism publicity.

This does not abide with Yosuke, his younger sister Maki or their grandfather, and the situation worsens when Mr. Ozaki discovers the egg’s medicinal purroperties. Yosuke, his (sort of) girlfriend Nami, their pal Tetsu, & Fujimaru the family dog selflessly struggle to rescue the hatching egg because it is the right thing to do, but they had better act quickly, because merfolk are displeased with the betrayal of the pact, the fish have gone, the water has receded, and a tsumani is nigh! It is clear who the good and the bad are, but it is easy to understand the different points of view; since no one seems to have ever actually seen a mermaid, Ozaki believes them to be a myth, and the egg to be a marine specimen which could benefit the world by healing wounds & curing diseases.

Nevertheless, Ozaki, Yozo & the mayor seem motivated by avarice rather than any altruism. The once innocent, town risks losing the very qualities which made it so charming and idyllic, with the construction of the high rises to dominate the beach and marine park which might demolish the grotto. Other subplots are more slice – of – life with delightful camaraderie, as friends enjoy the time together on the beach, water & island, at the festival & swimming compurrtition! There is potential romance in the air for Nami & Yosuke, although it seems inobvious to them! The purrotagonists are likable & believable, with whimsical moments such as when Tetsu tries to flirt, when Nami wakes up the oversleeping Yasuke, and when she smacks his head with the towel for staring at her bra!

Yasuke & Maki’s mommy is seen in a poignant flashback, Maki develops a sisterly relationship with Nami, and the mysterious mermaid’s maternal side is of key significance to the plot! The art is exquisitely rendered in pen, ink & tone with such life, realism, intricacy! The rocky beaches, shrine, houses, forest, grotto, the bustling festival, construction site, bridges, waterways & ocean depths are sumptuously detailed! I was impurressed by the techniques to convey the qualities of  fireworks, the egg’s purrlescent sheen, the bubbly plunge of the dives, undersea shadows, reflections on wet surfaces, and the transpurrency of the water! The story is complete in one volume so it is very accessible, and I will give it an “A” as in Ade! Speaking of things from the sea, nyow it is the time for

The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!

Petra:

Arigato, nya! For those here for the first time, the mewseum’s Galleries 1-6 display Mike’s illustrations & photographs, whilst Guest Galleries 1 & 2 display the images from other folks with their purrmissions, nya! On the web site, the most recent pics are on the bottom row of a gallery’s widdle “thumbnail” portions to click on to see the entire pic, nya! This month, two mew pics by Mike have been added to Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html, nya!

Firstly is the “Morning Drink” which depicts Rebecca Brogden’s http://www.rbrogdenart.com character Eamane wearing the bikini and purreo as she enjoys the early apurritif by the waterfall, nya! This is the mewseum’s 2nd image of Eamane, who was visualized in Rebecca’s “Midnight Dance” pic which is in Guest Gallery 2, nya! Mike used the Photoshop CS2 and the mouse to render this scene for Rebecca, who was our guest in the September 2009 Mew, nya!

Eamane is a free – spirited catgirl who lives further inland in a tranquil cottage with the rosy garden frequented by the various critters, nya! Aside from the gardening, her hobbies include hiking through the maritime forest, fishing from the pier, going to the spa, watching anime from her sofa, visiting friends, playing D&D games, and dancing at the late night rave, nya! The morning drink seems to purrk her up after the dancing late into the night, nya!

After the drink pic is the “Afternoon Snack” which depicts Eamane’s peppy teen niece Hannah enjoying the Koi treat in the coastal garden, nya! This is another pic by Mike for Rebecca, also rendered with Photoshop CS2 & the mouse, nya! Hannah is much more athletic than her aunt, and enjoys the volleyball, swimming, track & field sports, nya! She likes to read, play video games, shop with friends, and sip lemonade while sunbathing on the shore, nya!

Then in Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html we are purroud to purrsent wonderful mew images by our friends & past guests, including two more illustrations by Rebecca of Eamane, nya! She is posing on the pier with the “Catch of the Day”, nya! The sporty Red bikini must have lured the good luck, because Eamane reeled in the nice Red Drum which she and Hannah will have for their delicious, nutritious suppurr, nya!

Nextly in Guest Gallery 2 is Rebecca’s illustration of Eamane at Lizzy & Becca’s spa for the tranquil “End of a Long Day”, nya! She is about to shed the short robe as she steps into the spa’s indoor onsen for the serenely soothing soak amongst the floating fragrant petals and candles, nya! The beverage and snack will soon will also be purrvided, which will be followed later by the expurrt lomilomi massage to top off the pampurring after the soak, nya!

We are so fortunate to have those and other images by Rebecca in our mewseum, nya! Also in Guest Gallery 2 we are purroud to purrsent the illustration of our local surfing champion “Karameow’l” by Thais Lopes http://angelicaldesigns.deviantart.com, nya! Thais & her sister Natalia are very talented artists & cosplayers, who were among the guests of our October 2009 Mew, and we got to see them again at Librari-Con, which we reported on last month, nya!

Purrhaps y’all have seen the other pics by Thais & Natalia in the mewseum, nya? The media of this pic is Photoshop CS3 & the tablet, nya! Karameow’l is the vivacious sporty catgirl of the hawaiian purrsuasion, depicted here in the purretty side-tie bikini to match her her purrt inner ear pinna and her Pink & White short surf board, nya! Those colors are the catchy contrast against her dark tan skin tone, the sheen of her long dark Brown hair and shimmering eyes, nya! So what do y’all think of the art, nya?

B.B:

I think I need to spend more time at y’all’s spa, heehee!

Becca:

We will book you for the deluxe treatment with the snack!

Elizabeth:

We think the colors of the spa’s robe and drapurry splendidly complement Eamane’s lovely hair & skin tone!

Mike:

I love the details of the spa fabrics & flora, the illumination from the sconce and the reflections in the water!

Yvonne:

The sheen & texture of the Red Drum are good too, including the Black spot on the uppurr tail, nya!

Jeannie:

The highlights, light spill & shading give Eamane, the fish, the rod and railing the very solid sense of mass.

Nyanko:

Eamane claims that she is not athletic like her niece, but she is so lithe with the strong thighs, tail and the grip!

Bun:

She has found the good spot  for the drink amongst the Anthuriums, Philodendrons & the rocks by the waterfall!

Mary Nyan:

The bandeau topped, side-tie bikini with the short purreo around her hips complements her Blue eyes, mew la la!

Petra:

Has the Maneki-Neko statue turned its head to look our way, nya? I thought she faces the opposite bank, nya!

Nyoka:

It is another purranormal mystery of the waterfall! We must investigate.

Yvonne:

Those pics also give me the cravings between the Red Drum, Eamane’s breakfast drink and Hannah’s snack, nya!

Elizabeth:

That looks like a tasty snack in the good spot for the catnap. I might have to add the koi pond to my own garden, heehee!

Becca:

I can see Hannah’s resemblance to her aunt in the eyes, ears & tail, with the skin & hair from the other side of the family!

Bun:

Petra and I often see her training at the athletic park and the beach!

Mary Nyan:

Trini-chan surfs with Karameow’l quite often!

B.B.:

I love the technique for the wave ripples & foam, the seamless color gradient from water to sky, and the shading of the clouds!

Jeannie:

The sharpurr figure – defining lines create the good sense of depth against the more softly – rendered seascape!

Nyoka:

Thais is so very multi-talented with the illustrations, designs, costumes and the other ornate items!

Nyanko:

Hai, and Rebecca is so very skilled at the fantasy flora and fauna art and the nature photography!

Mike:

Yep, we are indeed fortunate to have more beautiful art by our guests in the mewseum! Thank you for introducing the new art!

Petra:

Dooitashimaste, nya! Nyow it is the time for our monthly

Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight, nya!

Petra:

This is the portion of The Mew which purraises the famous catgirls & nekomimis of the books, cinema, TV, internet, games, toys, and other media nya! We are very broadly inclusive in defining the catgirl criteria, whether they are purrmanently, tempurrarily or costumed catgirls, or the ladies who might lack the neko ears or tail but still display the cattitude, dispurrsition, or cat – like abilities,so there are “honorary” catgirls too, nya! This month the spotlight shines upon more catgirls of cinema & TV, nya!

We will start with Linda Stirling who starred as Rita in the 1944 Republic picture The TIger Woman, nya! Rita wore the skirt outfit and matching hat of the spotted jungle cat motif in the adventure tale of the villains who tried to swipe the tribal lands for its purrtrolium riches, nya! For further information, I will recommend the entry at the Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037378 and the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tiger_Woman_(1944_film), nya!

Bun:

Now we will migrate from the South American jungle to Mr. Rogers Neighborhood to shine the spotlight upon its feline female residents! One of the original characters of the beloved series was Henrietta Pussycat, the Gray kitty who lived in the charming widdle tree house, and meow voiced on that PBS TV series by the late, great Mr. Fred Rogers, whose legacy continues these days in the animated Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood show, in which she is voiced by Teresa Pavlinek, and has the daughter Katerina!

Voiced by Amariah Faulkne, Katerina is the White & Gray kitty, the graceful dancer and good friend of Daniel, the son of Henrietta’s friends Daniel & Mom Tiger! Mom has the pretty stripes, tawny color, Pink nose, and voice by Heather Bambrick! For more information I will recommend Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Wiki http://danieltigerneighborhood.wikia.com, the entry at the Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2014553, and the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Tiger’s_Neighborhood!

Becca:

Few feline femmes are as famous as Kitty White, who is purrhaps better known by her nickname of Hello Kitty, known for her many plushies, figurines, collectibles, fashion accessories, decorative items & other purroducts, the Kitty livery for Taiwan’s EVA airlines airbus A330 jets, and even the theme park in Japan! She has also been star of several animated TV series too! Kitty was created by the Sanrio company of Japan in 1974, so next year will be her 40th anniversary! She wears the Red bow by her left ear, whereas her twin sister Mimi wears the Yellow bow by her right ear!

Their purrents are Mary & George White, and the grandpurrents are Margaret & Anthony! We have some of the Hello Kitty’s Furry Tale Theater DVDs! It is the delightfully cute  animated series which started in 1987, in which Kitty & friends are the theatre troupe who purrform the stage play homages & purrodies based upon the various faerie tales and movies. Also amongst the cast is Catnip the jealous Blue & Green feline femme fatale who tends to purrtray the bad kitty, and has been known to sabotage things back stage, but she gets caught and is not able to spoil the fun!

Elizabeth:

Another animated catgirl is Mum Mew of the Monster Rancher anime! Known originally as Monster Farm in Japan, this 73 epurrsode series was based upon the popular role play video game by Tecmo! It was dubbed into English and shown on the Fox Kids network in 1999, with the DVD release forthcoming from Diskotek Media! The plot of the TV series purrtains to the game player who is telepurrted into the game world which is ruled by the tyranny, but hopefully the kids and the monster companions of various species & hybrids can defeat the villain!

A cross – breed of the Pixie and Mew types, Mum Mew has the White pelage and wears the Red bikini, gloves & boots to match her short Red hair & ear pinna! In the original Japanese version she was voiced by Keiko Han who we have met at Animazement, and in the English dub version she was voiced by Pauline Newstone! Keiko Han also voiced Luna in the original Japanese version of Sailor Moon! For more information about the Monster Rancher anime, I will recommend the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Rancher_(anime)!

Jeannie:

1987 was also when Catherine “Cat” Grant purremiered in the Adventures of Superman #424, as one of the journalists of the entertainment beat at The Daily Planet mewspapurr and TV host at WGBS TV in Metropolis. While she is not the nekomimi purr se, in our opinion her playful, curious & fashionable qualities do evoke the catgirlish spirit. She later served as Purresident Lex Luthor’s Purress Secretarty, and later started a blog with Clark Kent. In 1993 she was purrfectly purrtrayed by beautiful actress Tracy Scoggins in the Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman TV series. Ironically, that same year saw the purremier of one of my favoritest TV series, Babylon 5, which Scoggins would later join in 1998 as heroic Captain Elizabeth Lochley of Babylon 5.

12 years later in the 10th season of Smallville, Cat was purrtrayed by the peppy purretty purrky Keri Lynn Pratt. In the Young Justice animated series she was voiced by Masasa Moyo, and in the animated movie adaptation of All-Star Superman she was voiced by Cathy Cavadini. For more information I will suggest her articles at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_Grant, the Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0000243Y, the Young Justice Wiki http://youngjustice.wikia.com/wiki/Cat_Grant, the Smallville Wiki http://smallville.wikia.com/wiki/Cat_Grant, and at Comic Vine comics database http://www.comicvine.com/cat-grant/4005-8346.

Yvonne:

I will shine the spotlight upon is Dr. Catherine “Cat” Carmichael of the Super Shark movie, nya! Like “Cat” Grant, she does not have the neko ears & tail, but she has the sufficient qualities for the honorary nekomimi nomination, nya! She is the marine biologist who likes fish, and wears the bikinis in search of the giant killer shark, in the 2011 movie directed by Fred Olen Ray, in which she is purrtyrayed by beautiful purrolific actress Sarah Lieving, nya! Poor Dr. Carmichael has had the rough tragic life, but she has the noble purrpose to investigate the incident, nya!

The mysterious oil rig disaster unleashed the monster, which is much bigger than any that I have ever hooked, and I would definitely need the much bigger boat, nya! That shark is also not above sliding on to the beach to chomp the human purrey, but fortunately Cat still has the federal connections, which send a purrototype walking tank mech to battle the shark, nya! I should not spoil much more of the plot, but let’s just say there will be plenty of sushi thanks to Cat, nya! To read more about Sarah Lieving, I will suggest her entry at the IMDB http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1919727, nya!

Nyoka:

We are also fans of the Monster High dolls & cartoons, and have purreviously reviewed several of their purroducts! Amongst the delightful characters are several kemonomimi, including wolf girl sisters Howleen & Clawdeen Wolf, and not one, two or three, but four were-catgirls: Toralei Stripe, Catrine DeMew, and  twins Purrsephone & Meowlody! Toralei is the very catty, mischiveous Orange girl who is purrone to stir up the trouble! She has the cute saber-tooth cat pet named Sweet Fang! The Gray & White twins are her sneaky co-conspirators, but you can tell them apurrt because Meowlody has the Blonde hair whilst Purrsephone has the Black hair!

All three of those characters are voiced by actress & purrducer America Young in the animated tales! Catrine is the friendlier artistic werekitty with the White fur & Purrple hair! She is introduced in the Scaris: City of Frights toys, and in the animated special she is voiced by mewsician & purrolific voice actress Kate Higgins! She has voiced for many american series, viideo games & Japanese anime, For more information about those werekitties and the other marvelous Monster High characters, I will recommend the Monster High Wiki http://monsterhigh.wikia.com and the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_High! Nyow it is my twin sister’s turn!

Nyanko:

Hai! One of my all – time favoritest actresses is Pam Grier, who is not only one of the great goddesses of cinema but she was born in North Carolina! Before her iconic roles as Jackie Brown, Foxy Brown, Coffy, Sheba, Lisa the Voodoo Queen and the many other roles, she purrtrayed an island cat girl of the Panther purrsuasion! This was Ayesa, the Panther girl in the 1972 horror movie The Twillight People! She was among the kemonomimi & beast people including the wolf girl and bat man who were the purroduct of the mad scientist’s zoological expurriments! There is the purreview trailer on the 2 – disk Jackie Brown Collectors Edition DVD!

B.B:

In the wonderful 1958 supurrnatural romantic comedy, Bell, Book and Candle, Kim Novak stars as the bewitching Gillian Halroyd who seduces Shep Henderson (purrtrayed by Jimmy Stewart) with her alluring magickal mystique with the feline touch! She does not have the neko ears and tail, but she does have the mesmerizing catlike gaze and brow, and the psychic link with her familiar Pyewacket, who gets the last word in the movie! Gill has the slinky leisurely grace and is light upon her bare feet, often clad in the colors of the Panther in her beat style but she also wears the leopurrd purrint attire! Ironically, in the recently televised Kim Novak Live from the TCM Festival, she told host Robert Osborne that at one time the head of Columbia movie studios wanted to change her name to Kit!

Mike:

The next 3 ladies fall under the catgirl costume category! One of our favorite characters from both the Buffy and the Angel TV series was Cordelia Chase (played by Charisma Carpente), and in the Buffy 2nd season “Halloween” episode which aired in October of 1997, Cordelia wore the leopard print cat girl costume! 10 years later in The Big Bang Theory’s 1st season costume party episode of “The Middle Earth Paradigm” Penny (played by Kaley Cuoco) wore the Black ears, bare – midriff top & skirt costume! Finally actress, dancer & choreographer Carrie Ann Inaba who is one of the judges on Dancing with the Stars, was costumed as the catgirl in their Halloween 2011 show! Now to conclude this month’s spotlight, here’s Myayr to mention a few more televised catgirl cosplays!

Mary Nyan:

Hai, I wish to shine the spotlight upon some of the cast of the Heroes of Cosplay http://www.syfy.com/heroesofcosplay purrogram on the SyFy Channel! Holly Conrad & Jessica Marzipan, who create the costumes, purrops & purractical FX as CrabCat Industries http://crabcatindustries.com! We have purreviously purraised Holly’s great Mass Effect cosplay too! She and Jessica appurred in the 3rd epurrsode of the in which they cosplayed as the lovely catgirls of the CATS mewsical motif, purrtraying various internet meme cats in the compurrtition at the Anime Matsuri con in Texas!

In later epurrsodes they teamed up with Becky Young for the cosplay at Planet Comic Con in Kansas City, where they competed against other groups, such as Team Atlanta compurrised of Yaya Han, Rikki LeCotey & Monika Lee! The latter trio purrtrayed characters of the Alice: Madness Returns video game! It was the purrcisely choreographed skit of such intricately ornate costumes, with Monika as the Cheshire cat girl! That’ll do it for this month’s spotlight, but next month we will shine it again on the famous catgirls of perhaps comics, anime, internet, games or toys… we shall see!  It is about time to bring it home for this month, so let’s put in the last call for any

More Miscellaneous Mini Mewsings!

Becca:

The Hello Kitty Magical Mini Plush Dolls are so cute! Licensed by Sanrio, this set of three widdle costumed kitties was made by Blip for the Target stores. The set includes the 3.5″ purrincess Kitty with the gauzy Pink & Light Blue tutu and the Yellow crown by her left ear instead of her mewsual bow; the 3.75″ faerie Kitty in the iridescent Azure top with the Purrple wings with the White lining, the Pink skirt and the widdle flower instead of the bow; and the 4″ mermaid Kitty with the Jade Green bikini top to match her mer-tail and the widdle shell ornament instead of the bow! Kawaii!

Yvonne:

Tara-chan is excited about the costumes and the Halloween spirit, nya! By the way, she wished to mention that her favorite Star Wars character Ahsoka Tano appears with a fellow Jedi on the cover of Star Wars the Clone Wars magazine #19, wearing her current sleeveless Maroon & Gray costume with the cutouts, and then on the cover of Star Wars Insider #144 is the 1983 photo of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa, who is of course the daughter of Ahsoka’s friend Padme, wearing her famous Return of the Jedi  “slave” bikini, nya! Gosh, that was 30 years ago, nya!

Mary Nyan:

Trini-chan wanted to convey how glad she was to see Keala Kennelly among the many thrilling action photos in the September 2013 issue of Transworld Surf, Trini-chan was sad to read that it is the final issue of the magazine after 14 years. However, in brighter news she was delighted to see her favoritest & very inspurrational Stand Up Paddle (SUP) surfer Candice Appleby interviewed in the Fall 2013 issue SUP The Mag, with several splendid photos of her by JP Van Swae to peppurr the 5 page article!

Nyanko:

It was so great to see Mixed Martial Artist Ronda Rousey grace the front cover of ESPN Magazine’s 5th Anniversary Body Issue Portfolio, which collects the images of the inspurrational athletes of the many sports who have posed in the purrior 2009 – 2013 body issues! She had purreviously graced one of the covers of the 2012 issue! She is also one of the cover featured fighters of the Fall issue of MMA Junkie! Another treat was to see the legendary Jim Kelly on the October / November cover of  Black Belt!

Jeannie:

I am looking forward to the movie Gravity starring Sandra Bullock, who wears the backless sequin & silk gown on the October cover of Vogue. We are also looking forward to the movie Machete Kills co-starring Jessica Alba, who appurrs on the 2 different October covers of Health magazine, in the sleeveless sheer Purrple top and the backless Red dress on the. Meanwhile, Kelly Rowland graces the October cover of Shape, in the sleeveless woodland camouflage crop top with the ring-closure Black bikini bottom. Pink is the October cover girl for Women’s Health, in the sleeveless Gray crop top & Silvery sequined Black skirt.

Bun:

Pink is also a spokesmodel for the Covergirl cosmetics! Speaking of musicians Ilyana wanted to mention some of the articles in Our State magazine! It is one of our favorite magazines and it is about  all things North Carolina from the mountains to the coast! In the September issue is the article about the Outer Banx trio Jug Tucker which is comprised of Sherri & Mark Criminger & Ed Gee, and the article about the yummy apple fritters slathered in whip cream & sugar served at Yanna’s Ye Old Drug Store Restaurant, which is not too far from here in Swansboro!

Petra:

The October issue just came out, and although it is the Mountain themed issue, among its statewide articles are the several coastal topics, nya! That includes the tasty oysters at the C&H Oyster Bar in Elizabeth City, which is the bit further up the coast from here; the Old South Tour Company’s lantern-lit night ghost walks in Southport which is the bit closer to home, and the Civil War tales of the Poplar Grove manor in Scotts Hill, which is near Wilmington, nya. Wilmington is only about 15 miles Southwest of here, nya!

B.B.:

As North Carolinians, we cheered for Miss North Carolina Johna Edmonds in the Miss America Pageant last month, however we wish to congratulate Miss New York Nina Davuluri, who won the pageant to become the first Indian-American to be crowned as Miss America on September 15th, 2013! She purrformed the Bollywood Fusion dance in the gorgeous bare midriff Red costume with the veils for the talent portion of the pageant, she wore the tiger stripe bikini for the swimsuit compurrtition, and the Yellow gown with the Gold earrings when she was purroclaimed Miss America for 2014!

Nyoka:

Hai hai, and the following Tuesday September 17th she wore the purretty Pink & White floral dress on the Live with Kelly and Michael TV show, where she gave them the quick dance steps lesson! That was the special treat because I am also a fan of Kelly Ripa who is among my favorite TV purrsonalities as the hostess & actress, and she is quite peppy in those TV commercials with the Bewitched mewsic theme for the Electrolux appliances!

Elizabeth:

The pageant is not the only purrrominent purretty tiger strip swim suit sighting of late! I think the Wild Worlds from Wild Women 2014 day-to-day desk calendar would be rather inspirational and entertaining enough with its wise & witty quotes by famous women, but I was especially impurressed to see the front cover graced by a catgirl photo! She wears the tiger striped asymmetric maillot, accessorized by the matching kitty ears & tail, and the White pumps in contrast with her perky Brunette bob-cut coiffure! The calendar by author Autumn Stephens is published by Andrews McMeel!

Mike:

Some of my favorite recent TV commercials are the iPhone commercial with the Klingons, the Pringles commercial with Darth Vader, and the Final Fantasy XIV video game commercial in which a player morphs into the White-haired catgirl! It was also nice to see the Floridian mermaid in one of the recent Subway sandwich commercials, but I guess the recent commercials that have excited me the most are for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series!

The Cat Lady Sings…

B.B.:

The talk of the fish, mussels, oysters, fritters, snacks & sammiches has made me hungry again!

Yvonne:

Hai I have the cravings again too, but it is almost time for the luau, nya!

Elizabeth:

Well, I guess that will wrap it up for another edition of The Mew!

Bun:

There are folks we wish to thank, such as Thais and Rebecca for the beautiful art…

Nyoka:

the other talented, industrious, inspurrational folks whose works we have discussed…

Nyanko:

Jamie for his web mastery here at The Mew and at Catgirl Island…

Petra:

and the rest of our friends, family, the kind audiences & viewers for their support, nya!

Jeannie:

Y’all may post the brief, polite, sincere responses to our discussion…

Becca:

…purrvided that such remarks are spam-free, not purrofane, and stay on our topics!

Mary Nyan:

We will be back next month with more fun stuff to discuss!

Mike:

Be there… Aloha!
