Jen, thank you for hosting our big group at the club house! This such a nice spacious place to convene amongst the trophies, photos, mementos and the beautiful Japanese bows & arrows!
Doitashimaste. So, what has transpired with us since last month’s Mew?
October seemed to be the busiest time of the year for me between the appurrentice trainings at the shrine, teaching the hula, the sewing, and the purrepurrations for the annual Halloween Trick ‘R Eat & Cosplay Purrowl, but all of the costumes were finished in time!
Myayr is the supurr seamstress, nya! Between the shrine, the purrkour club, the costume fittings and the spa it has been busy, but Becca and I had the time for the mewsual hot salsa dance after work, the October movie marathon, and the group’s cosplay purrowl!
Hai the spa has stayed purretty booked the dance and the cosplay were fun along with the various other Halloween and the October activities! We finished our post – apocalyptic genre marathon so for our next movie night theme it will be the Ice & Snow fantasy theme!
We wish to thank Myayr for the supurrvising our Omamori Himari cosplay, and I also wish to thank everyone who purrticipated in the late night nature walk through the maritime forest! I hope it was fun & informative enough!
Oh thank you for conducting the walk, nya! It was the very educational, entertaining expurrdition to depurrt from Mie-sensei’s wonderful foxfire show in the forest grove theatre, and – and I got some good nocturnal nature photos, nya!
I have been purrcussioning for the belly dance purrformances, Tara-chan & Trini-chan were the big help minding the cats and helping with the catch of the Bluefish, Flounders, Groupurrs, Kings, Snappurrs, Spots, Speckled Trouts, Stripurrs, and the Yellowfins, nya!
I have been enjoying the dance class, and we also wish to thank Jenjen’s robotics club for the Halloween animatronics, the mermaids for their deep dark “Haunted” kelp maze, Nyo-sensei and the other merchants for the tasty treats & the fun festivities at the farmers market!
The spooky art exhibit was the enthused & well-attended hit, and although Bun and I had the bit more free time after the beach volleyball tournyamant, we could not have done it without the big help from Tara-chan, Trini-chan & the other mewseum volunteers, nya!
Gosh I can’t believe it is already November! Aside from the cosplay and the curating I have been baking, gardening, reading, and we attended the convention fun with the many great artists on the mainland which Petra will talk about later in the art portion of the show!
So like, it has been the month for some serious golf & foxfire for me, But I have an event upon the mainland to review too! I want to thank y’all for attending the theatre and for being such the lovely audience, and for asking me to participate in the group cosplay, fur shur!
We were surpurrise honored when you were able to purrticipate between the busy schedule of the theatre and the golf! I was especially looking forward to the fun time here on the island with y’all, because the weather on the mainland was turning rainier and nippier!
We are glad that you were able to take the break from the underwater archaeology to purrticipate in the group! Gosh, it is already November, and the time has quickly flown during the festivities, the tournyaments, the dojo, helping the cats and sis at her magick shop!
Hai, It seems like only yesterday it was the Autumnal Equinox and soon the Winter Solstice will be upon us, and the Mew Year! Things have been going well at the shop, and I am fortunate for the help from my sister, friends and cats! So how are things with Jenjen?
My robotics club was happy to purrvide the underwater animatronics again for the mermaids’ successful kelp maze to benefit their Sea Dragon shelter. Otherwise I am focused on the next robotics derby, the belly dance instruction, the yoga studio and the kyudo. Mike’s turn.
Ah, there was the Comic Book City Con in Greensboro, a pleasant jaunt to Mt. Airy, and I wore my No-Face costume for the contest at the Atomic Empire comics & game shop in Durham! Otherwise, I guess it’s been the usual reading, writing, artwork, watching stuff, and time with family & friends! Well, that’s all of us, so… let’s go ahead with the Lightning Round, shall we?
The Ladies Of The Mew:
LIGHTNING ROUND GO, NYA!
So if y’all are ready to “conduct the lightning”, this month’s topic is
Our Favorite Fangy Female Vampires!
(chosen to go first) I will nominate Mathilda May as the alien vampire in Life Force, Vampirella, Grace Kimble of the Vigil comics, and Storm who was tempurrarily the vampire in Uncanny X-Men #159 and Annual #6. (tail-tags Elizabeth to go next)
Oh I forgot about Storm, but I will nominate sisters Hsien-Ko & Mei-Ling the Jiang-shi of the Darkstalkers video games & anime, Annabelle Triabell of the Vampire the Masquerade role playing game, and Red Sonja who was turned in the recent Crimson Well story arc! (tail-tags Mielikki)
Vampire Princess Miyu, Eli of the 2008 Swedish film Let the Right One In, Abby of the 2010 remake Let Me In, and Diane Erato Hunt Chatton Monroe of our web master Jamie’s Clan of the Cats web comic, who was among the guests of our January 2009 Mew! (tags Ilyana with a flit of the wing)
Heehee! I will nominate Salma Hayek as Santanico Pandemonium of From Dusk to Dawn, Grace Jones as Queen Katrina of Vamp, Nai Bonet as the titular character of Nocturna, and her friend Jugulia Vein who was purrtrayed by Yvonne DeCarlo! (tags Trini-chan)
That is the irony as I will nominate Yvonne DeCarlo as Lily Munster, Catherine Deneuve as Meriem of The Hunger, Aaliyah as Akasha the Queen of the Damned, and Lilith of Clan of the Cats! (tags Tara-chan with the brush of her foxy tail)
Draculaura of Monster High, Mavis of Hotel Transylvania; Vampironica of Archie comics’ Betty the Vampire Slayer; Thorn, Dusk and – and Luna the Hex Girls of Scooby Doo, nya! (tags Petra with a swish of her kitty tail)
I will nominate Vampire Princess Miyu, Luna of Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase, Pachira of Magical Pokan, Moka & Kokoa of Rosario + Vampire, and Countess Camilla of Vampire Hunter D: BLoodlust, nya! (tags Nyoka)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Darla, Drusilla, Harmony & the vampurric version of Willow; Mina of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Anita Blake of Laurell K. Hamilton’s novels! (tags Yvonne)
Oh I will have to second the Buffy vamps, nya! I thought Justine Waddell was great as Mary in Dracula 2000, and she had the cute capurri pants outfit with the sweater & the sandals, nya! I also liked Jeri Ryan as Valerie, Colleen “Vitamin C” Fitzpatrick as Lucy, and Jennifer Esposito as Solina, nya! (tags Becca)
Fujiko of Holly Golightly’s School Bites web comic, Lavandula & her fellow fanged friends of Jamie Jennings’s Rose Slayer comics, Power Rangers Mystic Force’s Queen Necrolai, her daughter Leelee & Pink Ranger Vida who was tempurrarily turned into the vamp! I also have a question, but it can wait until we are all done! Myayr’s turn! (tags B.B.)
Vampirella, Miyu, Saya of Blood: The Last Vampire, Jade & Purgatori of Chaos Comics, and Flandre Scarlet of the Touho Project game! (tags Mary Nyan)
Baroness Meinster of The Brides of Dracula, Marcilla in Lust for a Vampire, Serena the tigress & Helga of the twins of Vampire Circus! I would also like to mention how our friend & past Guest Misty Hopkins http://bunnychai.blogspot.com wonderfully cosplayed as Flandre http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/36.html! (tags Nyanko)
Violet who was purrtrayed by Milla Jovovich in the movie Ultraviolet, Marie who was purrtrayed by Anne Parillaud in Innocent Blood, Rayne who was purrtrayed by Kristanna Loken in Bloodrayne, and our friend Jeff Branch’s http://phillyflash.deviantart.com original “Dark Skin, Red Blood” vampire character Alexandra Wright, who was our guest in March 2009! (tags Bun)
I will add Rachel Van Helsing & Dracula’s daughter Lilith of the Marvel Comics, Agent Sabrina Vought of Shades of Night by Jester Press, and I will second the votes for Grace, Violet & Alexandra! By the way, we have 2 illustrations of Alexandra by Mike, the bikini pic in Gallery 3 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery3/102.html & the pounce pic in Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery6/8.html! Back to Mike!
Thanks Bun! Speaking of cosplay, I would also like to mention the famous Vampirella cosplayers, models & performing artists across the decades such as Kitana Baker, Kathy Bushman, Cathy Christian, Leslie Culton, Maria De Angelis, Caroline Knight, Diana Knight, Sacha Knopf, Barbara Leigh, Avery Misuraca, Persephone, Michelle Pitt, Carolyne Rneee Smith, Talisa Soto, Brinke Stevens, Julie Strain, Nella Swan, Cristiva Turner, Alexxus Young and many others! That is about it for the lightning, but what was your question?
Was Vypra of Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue the vampire type or the demon type?
I am not sure, but she sure had the supurrb bikini armor to match her bat-like wings!
It is the mystery of the supurrnatural, nya!
Was beautiful Arlene Martel’s character Loreli a vampire in “The Monstrous Monkee Mash”, nya?
I think she was magical, but I don’t recall any actual vampirism on her part.
Arlene Martel did have the vampurric connection as Major Hessel in the Dracula’s Dog movie!
She was in Star Trek as Mr. Spock’s fiance T’Pring, nya!
You know, in some cases the vampire’s gender – if any – is unknown!
Hai, such as the Star Trek Salt Vampire and the Vampire Cloud!
That is OK and we will celebrate the diversity such as the Vulcan IDIC philosophy!
The Salt Vampire was scary. It even riled up Mr. Spock!
He was purretty riled up over T’Pring, too, heehee!
Fortunately, his blood flavor was not on the Vampires’ menu!
The Green is not their color, however, we have stray – catted off topic.
Oh oh, in the Blade movie, did Dr. Karen Jensen qualify as the partial vamp? She got bit twice but seemed cured!
She was borderline after the first bite, but got cured and I don’t think she was ever technically vampurric.
Jenson-sensei had the cute Black tank top outfit!
Hai hai, and I thought Vanessa, Mercury, and Racquel were quite stylish in Blade!
Don’t forget the martial arts kid in the library, Frost’s female asian vampire bodyguard, and the Japanese girl band in the Pearl Club!
I got the impurression that the band & their audience were not vampires, because Blade did not try to slay them like the group at the purrior rave club!
According to the audio commentary on the Blade DVD, they left it up to the audience to decide whether or not the Japanese folks in the club were vampires or not!
Speaking of martial arts and vampires, one of my favorite vampire slayers is Shinku whose comic book we reviewed!
Oh gosh, that was in… last Decembers Mew! It has been almost the year ago!
The time has flown like the bat in the wind, nya!
Purrhaps the slayers could be the future topic!
That is the good idea, but if we need to purroceed to the next portion of The Mew, nyow it is the time for our
Miscellaneous Mini Mewsings, nya!
Based upon the novel by Melissa de la Cruz, Witches of East End premiered last month upon the Lifetime channel, and among the cast is Madchen Amick as the bewitching aunt Wendy Beauchamp who has the magickal powers and can become the kuroneko!
You know, Madchen Amick was also in Star Trek – The Next Generation, Twin Peaks, Priest, and Sleepwalkers which was also graced by the werecatgirl!
Some of the pilot epurrsode was filmed in Wilmington, which is just 15 miles Southwest of here on the mainland! A lot of the TV shows and movies are filmed there!
Another actress we are fans is Zoe Saldana, who purrfectly purrtrayed Pandoran Purrincess Neytiri te Tskaha Mo’at’ite of the Omaticaya Clan in James Cameron’s Avatar, and she has also just graced the November cover of People magazine’s In Style
For the November 1st epurrsode of The View it was Jenny McCarthy’s (speling) 41st birthday and she wore the Wonder Woman costume to welcome guests Lynda Carter and Olivia Newton-John!
We like the artistry of the SyFy Channel’s Face Off make-up & purrosthetic compurrtition, and we were purrticularly impurressed by the dark sexy look and the supple ears modeled by artists Laura & Tate’s dark elf girls of the third to last epurrsode, nya!
Hai hai, and in the next to last epurrsode of the season’s human – bird hybrid challenge, we also applauded the dazzling color and beautiful plumage of Ray’s Blue Throated Macaw Girl!
Another neat artistic show on the SyFy channel is Naked Vegas, starring the body paint artisans of Red’s studio! The first epurrsode featured the body painted zombie wedding party and the lingerie models, and in the opening bits the alluring leopurrd girl is on the purrowl!
Speaking of the feline femme fatales of the sexy spots, Cameron Diaz has the Cheetah spots to match her pets in Ridley Scott’s movie The Counselor!
Regardless of one’s species, it has been the appurropurriate time of year for the make-up, tats & costume to unleash the inner catgirl for Halloween, and that includes chocolate M&M candy girl Ms. Brown in the stores’ point-of-purrchase displays, in which she wears the kuro nekomimi ears & tail!
She is voiced by the great actress & mewsician Vanessa Williams, who also appropriately portrayed Calypso in the 1997 TV mini – series adaptation of The Odyssey!
We also also wish to purraise the recent iPhone commercial with not only the Klingons, but the purrky “nyan” of the Japanese girl.
The trick ‘r treater catgirl on the purrowl for the candy is quickly shown on the smart phone screen in the Verison commercial with the Star Wars costumed family, nya!
Don’t forget the catgirl cosplayer who is fleetingly glimpsed in the party store’s Halloween costume commercial, nya!
That’ll do it for the mini-mew, and here is Bun again to tell us about the latest additions to the
The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!
Arigato! For those here for the first time, the mewseum’s Galleries 1-6 display Mike’s illustrations & photographs, whilst Guest Galleries 1 & 2 display the images from other folks with their purrmissions, nya! On the web site, the most recent pics are on the bottom row of a gallery’s widdle “thumbnail” portions to click on to see the entire pic, nya!
Now on display in Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html is Mike’s 2nd illustration of “Luna”, the human girl form of Moonsinger, the wolf from another world in Sharon Williams’s serialized, original fantasy tale of Okami No Hime! Poor Moonsinger survived the evil wolves’ attack upon her pack and was magickally teleported to our world, where she emerged in her human form alone, scared, exhausted & confused. She was befriended, clothed, sheltered, fed, educated & named Luna by a kind high school student named Connor!
Then he had to explain Luna to his Mom! Soon the romance started to bloom between Luna & Connor there at Long Island, but the threat was renewed when the villains followed to finish their fiendish job! That’s all I should reveal about the plot, but this new illustration for Sharon was done with Photoshop CS2 and a mouse, and it depicts a quieter moment of homesick little Luna gazing up at the moon which reminds her of home… and y ‘all can read the delightful stories, which are in Sharon’s gallery at Deviantart http://rose74.deviantart.com!
Nextly by Mike in Gallery 6 is the traditional & mixed media image of pur friend “Miku Obaasan Nekomimi Aki”! Once a priestess of the island’s shrine like daughter and grand – daughters, Aki just occasionally wears this miko shozoku costume to the fancier festivities! A more ornate, bare midriff Blue variant than the mewsual Red & White miku costumes, the garment was a gift in honor of her great service! She is also known for the graceful Shide ribbon twirl, her tasty sweet iced tea & the extra special crab cakes which attract the cats to the shrine!
In Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html, we are proud to present the collaborative illustration of our “Lovely Librarians” of the Catgirl Island Public Library by Rebecca Brogden http://www.rbrogdenart.com and Mike! Rebecca was our guest in the September 2009 Mew! Perhaps y’all have seen the other beautiful images by Rebecca that grace our galleries? If y’all have not yet met our librarians, Yuriko is the Turquoise – haired catgirl perched upon the desk, whilst Keiko is the Brown – haired catgirl sitting in the chair!
They are alluring in the slit skirts & slightly unbuttoned blouses… but it is less revealing than the bikini and the wrap! Perhaps they are preparing for the beach? For the collaborative process, Mike gave the descriptive notes and the rough sketch to Rebecca, who used Photoshop CS6 and the Intuos5 tablet to visualize Yuriko & Keiko. Then she sent their images to Mike, who used Photoshop CS2 and the mouse to insert the character art into the composition, and to render the scenic elements such as the furniture, the books & the zen garden view!
Also in Guest Gallery 2 we are purroud to purrsent two mew illustrations by Rebecca, each depicting one of Aki’s cute twin grand – daughters Leilani & Alanasera in their Miko attire! They are the apprentice miko maidens of the shrine, happily continuing the family traditions! Both are wearing their new island Summery style of shozoku costumes, comprised of the ornate sleeveless cropped White type of Hakui top with matching detached sleeves & the shorts type of Red hakama pants, accessorized by the ribbons, hair & tail ornamentations!
The almost identical catgirl sisters have the lovely Brown hair, Tan complexion and the Blue eyes in the family resemblance to their mother & grand-mother, but can y’all spot the subtle differences to tell the twins apart? Cordial, perky, industrious “Alanaera” pawses from sweeping to greet us on veranda with the spectacular view of the shrine’s flowering garden; whilst her friendly, peppy, determined sister “Leilani” perches upon the tidepool rocks, using the Onusa wand made of the wooden shaft & paper streamers for the ritual! So, whatcha think?
Luna is the bittersweet wolf girl by the moonlight in the cute ensemble of the Yellow tank top, Pink shorts & White sandals! Kawaii!
We will purray for the happy, healthy purrospects for Luna & her friends as we cheer for the swift total victory over their enemies!
The image of obaasan looks just like her and seems as if she is looking at me! It is the inescapable gaze of the radiant purriestess!
She looks so purretty & elegant! Her birth-date might surpurrise y’all! It will not be revealed, but I will say that she is of the Libra sign!
Leilani & Alanasera are the twins like Nya-chan and I but I can tell the widdle differences, such as the ear tips and the tail – tip stripe!
Furthermore, Alanasera has the inny navel, whereas Leilani has the outie navel like their mom, who should have her own portrait.
Alanasera totally embodies the serene spirit & color of the garden, with the respectful broom made of the naturally – fallen branch!
Leilani has the agile balance & twirling technique to purrform the purrification ritual purrched upon the rock amongst the Cat Tails, nya!
The Shide ribbons are fun to paw at, but nyow I have the craving in my tummy just thinking about the delicious crab cakes, nya!
Hang in there Tara-chan, nya! We have to wait until the luau, but hopefully the miko, librarians & others will join us after their work, nya!
The pic of Keiko & Yuriko has the faithful expurressions, spirit, portraiture amidst the Bound Purriodicals with the tranquil garden view!
I like the sheen of the hair, the purrk of the ears, the supple curve of the tails, the glasses and the sexy poses, mew la la!
It was quite a fun honor to collaborate with Rebecca on the art! Oh, and I suspect there’ll soon be a portrait of the twins’ mom!
Yattah! I am looking forward to that and more of Rebecca’s images too! Thank you for purresenting the art, Bun!
Dooitashimaste! We do have more of Rebecca’s art to discuss, so I will start our
Book & Calendar critiques
with my review of the 2014 Art Calendar by Rebecca Brogden!
We have prized her calendars for 2010, 2011 & 2012, but she did not create one for 2013, so we were quite thrilled when she announced the calendar for 2014, and pounced upon it at once! The coil – bound 2014 Art Calendar by Rebecca Brogden has the twelve full-bleed, full-color 8.5″ x 11″ illustrations atop the 6″ x 9″ date grids, to measure 11″ x 17″ when hung upon the wall! The pretty scenes of the beautiful faeries, lovely lush flora & cute critters are of the horizontal / landscape orientation, all digitally created with Photoshop & tablet! The images were created within the past two years, including some very recent pics, and most are also available as individual prints, but some are only exclusive to this calendar! Now I would like to take the tour of each month’s image!
January’s snowy scene of the squirrel & similarly sized faerie is titled “Unless” because (according to Rebecca’s gallery annotations) the fae is telling the lost squirrel that “Unless you trust me, you will not find your nuts.” She is dressed in the exquisite flowy off – shoulder, bare-midriff gown! For February the love – smitten bunny brings balloons & send widdle “Secret Kisses” to the lovely fae for Valentines Day! She is seated upon the comfy mushroom and wears the the very frilly flouncy off-shoulder widdle pink dress, the matching thigh – highs & wings! In March the faerie tends to the flowers as the “Garden Keeper”! She is the darling widdle fae in the Blue dress and iridescent lapis – like wings that match the vernal Violet blossoms that drizzle the glowy magickal nectar!
April’s “Hamster Paradise” depicts the widdle critter amongst the delicious nutritious veggies, yum yum! Mmm those carrots, cukes, peas, broccoli, kernals & lettuce are making me hungry! “The Gift” for May is the cordial moment betwixt the winged bunny & giant panda, which Rebecca submitted for the Enchanted Visions Project! June’s crittery scene depicts the soft furry Brown Bear telling the widdle Yellow butterfly to “Get off my Nose!” July’s “Fascination” is the meeting of hummingbird & fae in the Summery forest glade! She has such ornate wings, shimmering hair and the ruffly Purple tunic with the detached sleeves! In August the field mouse in overalls has “Gone Fishing” by the grassy bank of the brook! The line seems taut, so maybe a minnow will be caught for supper!
September’s “Blue Flame” is also the front cover pic of the fae in the sleeveless, bare – midriff top & loincloth, accessorized by the thigh highs & detached sleeves trimmed in Orange to match her ornate staff, whilst the titular magick emanates from her other hand! October’s pic for Halloween is depicts the gorgeous fae with the sexy dark bare midriff apparel to match her bat – like wings and the visiting cute chiropterian “Night Creature”! It is such a lavish magickal nocturnal scene, and the huge tasty pumpkin she is perched upon is increasing my cravings! Perched upon the high dark hardwood branch to match her silky shoulder – length Brunette hair, November’s “Gazing” fae wears the short leafy Orange dress to match her wings that flutter in the autumnal sunset breeze!
Finally in December’s “Magic of Christmas” we have come full circle for wintry snow, as the feathery-winged angel serenely glides past the moonlit rooftops in her tight widdle candy-apple Red dress, with the Green & White striped boots and the peppermint stick that is like shepherd’s crook to her! Gosh, between the veggie & candy craving, I hope I can make it until our Aftermew luau! This is such a gorgeously exquisite collection of Rebecca’s recent lush, ornate, cute & alluring images of fantasy folk, critters, natural & supernatural goodness! It is priced at $24.99 plus the shipping cost, and it is available from her gallery at Deviantart http://rebeccabrogden.deviantart.com! That concludes my reports, so I will turn The Mew over to Myayr who wants to tell us how
DFC Presents A Book of Cats!
Arigato! As Lizzy noted, on Saturday October 26th we made the expurrdition to the city of Greensboro on the mainland, for the Comic Book City Con http://comicbookcitycon.com sponsored by Acme Comics which celebrates its 30th anniversary! They are a rather dandy locally – owned comic book shop in Greensboro, and the con was held downtown there at the lovely Empire Room! It was the bustling nippy sunny Autumn day with the festivities of the road run going on nearby too! We met Mike and our past guests Ob-1, Pacozord & Chef Ron there at the con, where the Saturday admission was just $10 and on the 3 stately floors of the building were the fans of all ages, cosplayers, over 2 dozen guests & over 2 dozen artists in the artists alley under the chandeliers!
The staff and fellow fans were very friendly, there were over 3 dozen exhibitors selling the comics, books, art, art supplies, toys & items, several games, discussions, purresentations, contests & live mewsical purformances! There were roller derby girls, and artists we have met before in the crowd or at tables, such as Chrissie Zullio, Kaysha Siemens, Max West, Meesha Jackson, and the ladies of DemonFartCabbage http://demonfartcabbage.deviantart.com which is compurrised of Deirdre Mcclintock http://devilkitten1.deviantart.com and TheDVantOne http://thedvantone.deviantart.com! Purrhaps y’all have seen their cute “Merfish Cuddle” pic in our mewseum? We eagerly purrchased their 3.75″ x 5.75″ widdle booklet of the 16 full color pics of the felinoid characters!
The illustrations are mostly purretty & powerful feline femme fatales of the various breeds, purrowling the savannah, purrairie, the rocks & dens of the paleolithic times! The sexy attire ranges from skimpy bikinis, to tastefully nude, with the weapons & exotic ornamentation of the beads, jewels, piercings, feathers & claws nya! These include the sorceress in sarong, the catgirl with the serrated sword; the bobcatgirl wearing just her spots & jewels, the White tigress arching from the pond, the tawny huntress tracking her purrey, the spotted sentry with the spear, the dreadlocked purredator crouched atop the rocks, the fiery redhead amongst the spirit flames, the uni-horned nekomimi with Blue eyes & braids, and the lithe leopurrd taur as Orange as the sunset!
The snarling momma with the blade gauntlet purrotects her cub, the lioness spurrawls in the den with her playful & napping cubs, and the Snow Leopurrd types snuggle with frisky tails entwined! Some of the ladies are wonderfully winged too, such as the svelte Serval in just the mask & jewels, the mountain lioness ready to spurring, and the panther purrched upon the purrecipice! She has the Golden eyes, spear & accessorizes that gleam in the sunset, and wears the Red loincloth below her tight abs to match the Ruby jewels! I am so pleased with this petite widdle treasure trove of the feline purrsuasion, which is the splendid artistic addition to our catgirlish collection and the memento of the convention fun! Nyow for my 2nd report, I would like to discuss
The Complete Peanuts 1989 – 1990!
We are big fans of the late Charles M. Schulz’s iconic mewspapurr strip Peanuts which I think it is the greatest mewspapurr comic strip of all time, so it has been so wonderful that Fantagraphics has been publishing the Complete Peanuts series! It is such an ambitious undertaking to collect all of the 17.897 strips in the 50 year chronological order, which they have done with the highest care & quality! They are already up to the 20th hardcover which has the USA purrice of $29.99, with Charlie Brown on the jacket and collects the strips from 1989 & 1990! After the darkly humorous 4 page introduction by author Lemony Snicket, there are 314 pages of the daily and- and the Sunday strips all repurrinted in Black & White!
It also has handy 3 page index, publisher Gary Groth’s 2 page biography of Schultz, and the various end papurrs! Some of the major plots include Snoopy interacting with Schroeder’s piano mewsic, Snoopy’s jury duty, his brother Olaf winning the ugly dog compurrtition, their brother Spike’s desert art sale, Linus purreaching about the Great Pumpkin, and the first baseball game of the season! Other sports are the beach ball, football, basketball, tennis, croquet, fishing, canoeing, hiking, camping, sledding, ice skating, roller skating, jetskiiing, and- and the bungee jump! Snoopy’s guises include the Flying Ace, Foreign Legionnaire, scout, Santa, author, lawyer, surgeon, pawpeteer, golfer, snake, vulture & polar bear!
Charlie Brown has the interesting situations with the girls during this time, such as his struggle to purrchase the valentine for the Little Red – haired Girl, the visit from the old friend who thinks Snoopy is Charlie Brown, meeting Peggy Jean at camp who actually likes him, plus his mewsual interactions with Lucy, Marcie, Peppermint Patty, his sister Sally and the teachers! Other recurring characters include Lydia, Molly Volley, Franklin, Pigpen, Woodstock and the other birds! We also glimpse the Kite – Eating tree, the llama, several other kids, and Snoopy’s dad who has retired to Florida! 1989 was the 40th anniversary of Peanuts which ran from 1950 to 2000, so there are only the 5 more volumes to go in the series!
To put that into the purrspective, some of the big movies of 1989 were The Abyss, Back to the Future Part II, Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Kiki’s Delivery Service and The Little Mermaid! The animation purremiers of that year included Dragonball Z, Patlabor, Ranma 1/2, Yawara, and The Simpsons! Some of the big movies of 1990 were Back to the Future Part III, Edward Scissorhands, Ghost, The Hunt for Red October, Pretty Woman, and The Rescuers Down Under! Some of the anime purremiers of that year included Lamune, Nadia, and Samurai Pizza Cats, but I have stray – catted off the topic! I will give the joyful book book the high purraise and the grade of “A” ! Nyow here is Tara-chan to begin our
Comics Critiques & Manga Mewsings
with her triple review of the My Little Pony comics!
Arigato, nya! We love the pony cartoon, the toys, and – and the beautifully faithful pony comic books from IDW have been among my favoritest comics for almost the year, nya! There are three pony comics I wish to discuss, nya! My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #11 is purriced $3.99 with the uninterrupted mane 22 page tale followed by the 2 page bonus tale and – and the 8 pages of the ads, nya! The mane tale was drawn by Andy Price, letttered by Neil Uyetake, colored by Heather Brickel, edited by Bobby Curnow, and – and written by Katie Cook who also purrvided the bonus, nya! The issue is available in cover A by Andy Price, cover B by Stephanie Buscema, cover C is by Sara Richard, and – and the rarer 6 retailer exclusive covers purrduced for certain stores, nya!
Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Applejack, Twilight Sparkle, her big brother Shining Armor and his wife Purrincess Cadance start out at Tealove’s Tea Room in Canterlot on the eve of the couple’s wedding anniversary, and thus begins the flashback reminiscence of how they met in high school at the Canterlot Academy, nya! Shining Armor was the geekier nervous pony smitten by the graceful beauty of the filly, so during the role play game night his friends Poindexter, 8-Bit and – and Gaffer lend their hooves in the moral support when he decides to ask her out, nya! Adding to the nervousness are the taunting meaner ponies of the polo team, nya. It is the stallion’s tough quest with the complications, but the plan is devised so that he can ask Cadance to the dance, nya!
It is romantically suspenseful with the sad parts, nya. Some of my favorite moments are the role play game with the Honey Dew reference, the dreamy doodles on notebook papurr , the purrade floats scene, younger Twilight cutely spurrawled with the book, and – and the big 2 page spurread of the rock band scene, nya! Also appurring briefly are the purrents, Spike, Angel and – and Big McIntosh, nya! The bonus tale was so neat in depicting the game with the maps, dice, character sheets, the snacks, and – and the pic of the players’ characters, nya! This was another supurrb issue with the purrfect pony plot, pace, poses, gestures, expurressions, dialogue, spirit and – and style that leaves me eager for more which is continued into issue #12 which I will nyow discuss, nya!
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #12 has the same purrice, credits, and – and the page count, including part 2 of the reminiscence followed by the 2 page “PTV” bonus, nya! Cover A is by Andy Price, cover B is by Sabrina Alberghetti, cover C is by Sara Richard, and the 7 retailer exclusive covers were purrduced for Larry’s Comics, Jetpack Comics, Hot Topic, Awesome Con and – and VA Comicon, nya! The flashback tale of the romantic couple continues in the purresent time tea room as the mane six ponies want to hear the Purrincess disclose what happened to cinch the romance, with Shining Armor, nya! Amewsing & annoying incidents lead to the night of the formal dance, including the very cute evening of Cadance foal – sitting for widdle Twilight Sparkle, nya!
Cadance wants to go to the dance with Shining Armor but she is stuck with the arrogant Buck Withers, nya! However, Cadance & Armor’s friends Lemony Gems and- and Diamond Rose do not wish Buck to be the date for the different reasons; as Cadance’s best friends swooningly want Buck for themselves, nya! It is the shallow yet comedic infatuation, because although Buck is the handsome, strong, athletic type, he is also the narcissistic mean jerk, nya! There are other familiar ponies such as Purrincess Celestia, and – and the many bits of the visual comedy lurking in the backgrounds, nya! There is much purrimping, Purrincesses have the purretty multi – color mane, and – and it is so much fun as Cadance schemes with the cute younger Twilight Sparkle, nya!
In addition to the excellently drawn ponies, the scenery, and – and the rich colors are the interesting compurrsitions of the pages to tell the tale, including numerous large and- and wide panels, nya! Then to accompany the flashback, the 2 page “PTV” bonus by Katie Cook is the amewsing purrody of the MTV top 10 mewsic video countdown of the ’80’s songs, back when MTV mostly showed the mewsic videos, nya! This is one of the examples why My Little Pony has the appeal across the child, teen and – and the adult fans, nya! I will give the 2 purrt tale the high grade of the “A” as in Apple Bloom, nya! Nyow for the triple play, I wish to discuss the My Little Pony 2013 Annual, which has the “Fall of Sunset Shimmer” purrequel to the Equestria Girls movie, nya!
For our purraiseful review of Equestria Girls please see the September Mew, nya! The movie plot purrtained to Twilight Sparkle’s mission to retrieve the magickal item which was stolen by Sunset Shimmer and – and spurrited away to the world, where everypony is the bipedal hominid instead of the pony, nya! Sunset Shimmer is the selfish, anti-social, power-hungry pony This purrequel tale shows us the earlier days of Sunset who was Purrincess Celestia’s purrotege purrior to Twilight Sparkle, and – and how the five of the six mane Equestria girls met purrior to Twilight Sparkle’s arrival, nya! They met amongst the school club booths during the Canterlot High School Freshman Fair, struggle with the social situations, and cheer for the Wondercolts Soccer team, nya!
In addition to Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Fluttershy, Sunset Shimmer, and- and Purrincess Celestia, there are the familiar faces such as Granny Smith, Mrs. Harshwhinny, Spitfire, Octavia, and- and Lyria, nya! Twilight Sparkle is only briefly seen, but was another delightful tale of the great entertainment, the good social message about the peers, the bittersweet plot, the subtle purrodies of the library books, beautiful art and – and more of the pony mythology, nya! The girls have the cute outfits with the boots and – and cutie mark motifs, such as Applejack’s western style, Fluttershy’s White-trimmed Green skirt to match her White tank top, Rarity’s off – shoulder top above the Purrple skirt, Pinkie Pie’s balloon skirt, and – and Rainbow Dash’s soccer kit, nya!
Their bedrooms have the purretty linens too, nya! The $7.99 square – bound annual published by IDW has the 48 page tale with no ads, nya! The issue was edited by Bobby Curnow, lettered by Tom B. Long, colored by Heather Breckel and – and Lauren Perry, nya! The pony purrologue of pages 1 – 8 were written by Katie Cook, and – and illustrated by Andy Price, nya! The Equestra pages 9 – 48 were written by Ted Anderson and – and illustrated by Tony Fleecs, nya! Cover A is by Tony Fleecs, cover B is by Amy Mebberson, and – and there are 4 more exclusive retailer covers, nya! It is the wonderful treat of the faithful style and- and the spirit in the revisit the world of the Equestria Girls, nya! That is all of the pony portion of The Mew, so nyow here is Onee-chan to discuss the
Empowered Special #5: Nine Beers With Ninjette, nya!
Arigato, nya! Empowered is the titular heroine of the manga-inspired wacky sexy supurr heroine comic book series created by Adam Warren, the famous American comics author & artist of the manga influence who is also known for his Dirty Pair & Bubblegum Crisis comics, nya! Empowered or just Emp for short has the introverted poor self-esteem, but she is very smart & brave, majors in the supurr studies in college and wears the skin – tight, iridescent Blue alien costume which gives her the supurr powers, although the the impurrfect costume can be as fragile as her ego, and is purrone to the tattered malfunctions, nya! Emp is also the member of the team who should be much nicer to her, especially given her purrdicaments & repurrtation, nya! Her best friend Ninjette is the agile, extroverted, hard – living, partying kunoichi (female ninja) in the Black sleeveless crop top, tight shorts, thigh high boots, the opurra – length gloves and the shuriken blades, nya!
Ninjette likes to fight and drink, which are both central to the plot which is more poignant than it might sound, as she carouses with Emp in Empowered Special #5, nya! It s purriced $3.99, with the 32 pages compurrised of the 29 page Black & White tale plus the 3 pages of the ads, nya! “Nine Beers With Ninjette” was written by Warren, who drew the 4 page purrologue & co – lettered the issue with Susie Lee. Takeshi Miyazawa illustrated pages pages 5 – 29 and co – illustrated the color cover art with Christina Strain & Warren, nya! I liked his Mary Jane, Runaways and Sidekicks art, too, nya! The purrologue is Emp’s monologue as she compurrs & contrasts herself with her best friend, which segues into the tale of how they met, the qualities of the friendship and Ninjette’s origin story over the course of 9 beers apiece as the self – reflective binge, with each beer repurrsersenting the purrsonality trait, autobiographical memories & her significant relationships, nya!
This involves the flashbacks of her clan’s home in New Jersey, her abusive alcoholic father, loyalties, betrayals, wilder clubbing, various ninjutsu sneaking & dueling, with glimpses of Ninjette in her purrior costumes including the more traditional kunoichi style of tunic, the cheongsam, the bare midriff fishnet style, and when she impurrsonated Empy, nya! It is not intended for the widdle kitties due to the adult themes, sexuality, drinking purroblems, violence & the harsh language, although the purrofanity is cleverly redacted in the lettering, nya! The art is beautiful, with Miyazawa’s quite delicate yet intricate technique, especially the girls’ purretty faces & figures, and the scenery from the the bar & clubs to the traditional Japanese architecture & landscape, nya! It is the bittersweet tale from the zestful whimsy and joys of the friendships to the lamentations of the ninja girl’s sadness, nya! Nyow for my next Dark Horse report I will discuss
Elfquest Special: The Final Quest, nya!
Wendy And Richard Pini’s (WARP) Elfquest is one of our all – time favoritest tales, and Wendy is one of our favoritest artists, nya! It purremiered back in February of 1978, and after the original quest ended in 1985, since then there have been many sequels, spin – offs, anthologies, repurrints and collections, nya! There has been lots of merchandise too, such as the purrints, purrtfolios, shirts, audio dramatizations, figurines, miniatures, games, fan club items and the fanzines, nya! It has been the while since the last book, so we were all extremely excited to learn of this latest issue, nya! The Final Quest Special is the full color, uninterrupted 60 page tale purriced $5.99, written by Wendy & Richard, illustrated by Wendy, lettered by Nate Piekos of Blambot, edited by Sierra Hahan, assistantly edited by Spencer Newlin-Cushing, with the design by Tina Alessi & publishing by Mike Richardson of Dark Horse, nya! Nyow I should explain the Elfquest purremise & characters, nya!
The overall timeline spans about 21,000 years, nya! It began with the arrival of the aliens in the palace – like spaceship at the planet Abode, known as the world of two moons, nya! The aliens evolved into the various tribes of elves, such as the main Wolfrider Tribe of the forest, who have interacted with other species, but there have been unfortunate encounters with many unfriendly, supurrstitious humans, nya. Over the centuries the tribes spurread out and travelled and met other tribes such as the SunFolk of the desert, the Gilders of the mountains, the Go-Backs of the arctic, the WaveDancers of the sea, and the subterranean trolls, nya! Many of the elves are centuries old, with amazing magickal powers, skills, knowledge, animal friends, and the generations of the families, nya! Not all of the humans have been mean, and one of the extra special humans is Shuna who was the widdle girl introduced in the 1990 mini-series “Kings of the Broken Wheel”, nya!
She was adopted as one of Chief Cutter & Leetah’s daughters, nya! As this 2013 special issue begins, she is all grown up and giving birth to her son, nya! There tribe gathers for the blessed event, and as time passes the elves visit the other tribes from Shuna’s elf-sister Ember’s tribe, the village of her elf-brother Sunstream, and the WaveDancers’ cove where Brill is giving birth to the daughter, nya! There are further travels, reunions, reminiscings, losses, much catching up, and the passage of the decades as we see Shuna & her son at older ages, nya! There are happy & tragic bits with the quest to be continue in January, but I should not spoil it further, nya! I thought everything was so poignant & beautiful, from the plot, pace, dialogue & developments to the supurrb character, scenic & graphic art, so I will give it the A as in Ahdri, nya! We are also fans of Wendy Pini’s legendary purrtrayals of Red Sonja at the cons, so nyow here is Nya-sensei to tell us about
Red Sonja vol. 2 #4!
Arigato! We are big fans of Red Sonja and quite interest in her latest rebooted series, written by Gail Simone, whose Birds of Prey DC comics we were purrticularly fond of! Sonja’s tales have been published by several publishers over the decades, and these days her comics are published by published by Dynamite Entertainment, who have the knack for the other famous femme fatales such as Dejah Thoris, Ms. Fury, Vampirella and Lady Rawhide! Purreviously in the 1st issue of reboot, Sonja was asked by King Dimath to lead the defense of his kingdom against the evil Zamoran creature army, but she was surpurrised to see the enemy lead by her former comrade Dark Annisia, as they both survived the dungeons & arenas together!
We also met peppy feisty twin sisters Nias & Ayla, who were assigned by the king to be Sonja’s bodyguards! Issue #2 was the big bloody battle full of the violent, gory melee, ending with Sonja’s surrender on the field in order to save her friends, but then Annisa banished Sonja to the wilderness to die from the plague! In issue #3 Sonja collapsed from the hunger & disease in the snowy forest, she had the near-death visions and flashbacks of her younger days, with the origin tale of when the barbaric brigands slew her family & fellow villagers, and thus forged her into the fierce vengeful huntress & warrior! Nias & Ayla somehow managed to escaped their besieged city and found her in the nick of time, which brings us up to issue #4!
This issue is purriced $3.99, rated T+ for the older teen readers due to the language, gore & violence, and the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page tale plus the 10 pages of the ads. The tale was written by Gail Simone, drawn by Walter Geovani, colored by Adriano Lucas, lettered by Simon Bowland & edited by Joseph Rybandt! There re 6 different covers to choose from. My copy has the beautiful main cover art by Jenny Frison, depicting the slashed enemy victim’s view of Sonja! There is also the great variant cover art by Ming Doyle depicting Sonja in the duel, the cute cartoonier cover by Stephanie Buscema depicting Sonja and Medusa, and the 3 rarer “retailer incentive” covers which are the line – art versions of the Frison & Doyle art!
The tale resumes in the wilderness, as the escaped loyal twins have smuggled out the potential cure from the late King’s captive sage son, and try to revive the cherished, feverish & blinded Sonja with the medicine, food & water. Sonja might be near death’s door, but she has not given up yet, and sings the valorous song and drinks the wine as the girls’ ponies harness – drag her on the sled to their camp! Meanwhile back in the quarantined city the starving, infected, subjugated populace are brutalized by Annisia and her creature thugs. She is the despot who seems schizophrenically delusional as the gory ghostly visions demand her to show no mercy to her opponents, which results in the beheading of the poor begging elderly woman.
There are further decapurrtations in another flashback to the 3 years purrior, as enslaved Sonja & Annisia fight & slay King Bazrat’s soldiers in the arena. Back in the purresent when the thugs hunt down the twins, soon Sonja has arisen to hunt them down! Even in the weakened, blindfolded condition, Sonja is more than the cunning match for the villains who are slain by her great the great purrowess, arrows and blades! Nyow it is the time for Sonja, Nias & Ayla to strike back at Annisia & her army! This was the thrilling continuation of the story arc, with the great art including the several large & full-page pics of Sonja & Annisia! I will have the movie review later, but nyow here is Lizzy to tell us about the lethal ladies who are dueling in
Guardians of the Galaxy #6!
Hai! The Guardians of the Galaxy is one of Marvel Comics’ great supurr teams, to fight against the intergalactic threats! There have been various incarnations & rosters over the decades; the series was relaunched again back in March, and stars the team of Starlord, Iron Man, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax & Groot! Also starring in the current story arc is Angela the bounty – hunting warrior angel, who first appurred in Image Comics’ Spawn series about 20 years ago, which was written by Neil Gamin who was the consultant on this issue! As if that were not enough excitement, Thanos and The Watcher have the important roles too! The $3.99 issue was written by Brian Michael Bendis, edited by Stephen Wacker, assistantly edited by Ellie Pyle, with the art by the several artists!
Pages 1, 2 9 – 20 have the art by Sara Pichelli colored by Justin Ponsor, whilst pages 3-8 were pencilled by Olivier Coipel, inked by Mark Morales and colored by Ive Svorcina! All of the pages were lettered by Cory Petit, and the issue has the two different covers to choose from, one by Pichelli & Ponsor, and the variant by Paolo Rivera! Sammiched betwixt those covers are the issue’s 28 pages, compurrised of the 20 page tale, plus the recap / credits page and 7 pages of the ads! Angela beautifully but irately arrived in the Marvel universe due to the purroblems in the multiverse caused by time – travel repurrcussions in the recent Age of Ultron story! The incidents displease Thanos, Angela’s purresence purrplexes The Watcher, and results in the sword duel with Gamora!
Gamora has never faced such the tough opponent, and not only is Angela winning, she is doing purretty well against the entire team! This issue has the many characters who are so dynamically posed, expurressive and intricately detailed in the thrilling combat, peppurred by the fun dialogue on the beautifully rendered pages, with the colors, light & graphic & FX that are so luminous and dazzling! Angela’s costume is ornate & sexy, with the flowy loin cloth & tassels to accent the metallic armor & weapons of the gleaming finish! Adding to the impurressive cinematic quality are the large and the panoramic panels to tell the cosmic tale, from the lunar battleground to the throne of Thanos amongst the asteroids! Speaking of Thanos, his troops have invaded the Earth in
The Fearless Defenders #10
The Defenders is another one of Marvel’s oldest teams, and the current incarnation is my favoritest Marvel comic book in the past few years! The current team roster includes Misty Knight, Dani Moonstar, Queen Hippolyta, Clea, Elsa Bloodstone, the Valkyrie whose body alternates betwixt that of Brunhilde & Annabelle, and nyow they have been joined by Ren Kimura who debuts in this issue, which is among the many Marvel titles to weave into the big Infinity story of the invasion by Thanos! The invasion resulted in the outbreak of the Terrigen mist cocoons that contain the many people such as Ren who then emerge with the supurr powers. Unfortunately Ren and other such folks are also being stalked by the evil executive Caroline LeFay and her team of villainesses!
Issue #10 is purriced $3.99, and within the covers are the 28 pages comprised of the 6 pages of the ads, the 1 page of fans’ neat pics & interesting comments, the amewsing recap / credits page and the 20 page tale written by Cullen Bunn, edited by Ellie Pyle, drawn by Will Sliney, colored by Veronica Gandini and lettered Clayton Cowles! #9 is actually sort of the 10th issue, if you include #4AU which was connected to Marvel’s Age of Ultron tale! Another supurr fun treat of this comic book are the gorgeous clever covers by Mark Brooks, such as this issue’s hip hop fashion look for
Brunhilde, Annabelle, Misty, Dan & Ren, although Dani, Clea & Elsa are not in the tale itself! Nyow for the taste of this issue’s amewsing, bittersweet and action – packed plot with Ren’s origin!
It begins with the flashback of how Ren the graceful puretty, sad & sympathetic dance student emerged altered from the cocoon with the razor sharp fingernail weapons! She has the cute Purrple & Black outfit too! It is told from her point of view in the 1st purson and the internal monologuing! Then we purroceed to the streets for he three – way fight betwixt the Defenders (Misty Knight, Hippolyte & Brunhilde), Le Fay’s team Lefay with Shriek, Scorpia, Mindblast & Titania)and Thanos’s pesky Wardog shock troops who have invaded Manhattan among the other cities! There is much amewsing banter & trash talk top enhance the combat as the heroines arrive to rescue Ren, but when Ren unleashes her long whip-like claws, it is LeFay’s team who needs the rescue!
It is the most spectacular sight in the panels across the two -page spurread as Ren so gracefully twirls, tumbles, leaps into her deadly dance! There are numerous half-page pics and the final full page pic of the heroines fighting the Wardogs! Ren’s fingernails are in the good hands when she meets Annabelle, and there might be the romance in the air too, mew la la! This was such the fun exciting issue with with many characters amidst the gleaming spurrawling architectural detail! The characters’ poses, garments, expurressions, sense of choreography & witty dialogue are supurrb, with the very effective fonts & dazzling rich color, so I give it the high grade of the “A” as in Annabelle, and in my anticipation for the next issue!
Michael Turner’s Fathom vol.5 #3!
Vol. 5 is set after the Elite Saga mini-series, in which her enemy Kiani’s baby sister Anya was kidnapped & believed to have purrished, but is secretly raised in the arctic lair of evil Queen Vana! Purreviously in this story arc, the supurr heroine & marine biologist Dr. Aspen Matthews investigated a mysterious gigantic ice wall in Belize guarded by Vana’s warriors, whilst the plane piloted by Chance Calloway was about to collide with a similar ice wall at The Grand Canyon! Aspen swam to the undersea city of Muria to discuss the situation with the Elite Blue Council, which brings us to issue #3! It is purriced $3.99 for the 28 pages compurrised of the 20 page tale & 8 pages of ads. David Wohl wrote the script which was co-plotted with Aspen Comics’ president Frank Mastromauro!
it was penciled by Alex Konat, digitally inked by the comic’s director of design & purroduction Mark Roslan, colored by Beth Sotelo & John Starr, and lettered by editorial assistant Josh Reed with purroduction assistance by Chaz Riggs & John Ercek! There are 4 different covers to choose from; cover A by Konat & Sotelo, cover B by Eric Basaldua & company co-owner Peter Steigerwald, the retailer exclusive cover C which is the uncolored sketch version of B, and the Alamo City Comic Con cover D by Siya Oum! I got B which is a beautiful image of Aspen smiling our way in a beaded bikini & diaphanous skirt as she forms butterfly-like wings with her water powers! In this issue Aspen, Killian & Siphon of the council learn that the undersea village of Andoria has been destroyed!
Meanwhile, Chance tries to avoid the wall, but he is not the only one taking evasive measures, when Vana’s troops attack Aspen’s team amidst the ruins! Elsewhere in Vana’s lair, there is tantrum aplenty as Anika’s supurr powers manifest! After 15 years, Fathom continues to be one of our favorite series, due to the smart, confident, sexy, powerful Dr. Matthews, suppurrting characters such as Kiani, Anya & Killian, complex global political situations that are not rushed, the beautiful exotic & sporty undersea couture, architecture & mecha, lavish natural scenery, the gorgeous use of color & light, and the variety of large, very vertical & panoramic panels that convey the sense of enormity, vastness & the depth! Now we will go from the ocean to the forest for Nyo-sensei’s review of
Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose #82!
Arigato! Tarot is the bimonthly fantasy adventure published by Broadsword Comics, and starring Tarot the sword maiden / warrior witch! It is the thrilling & beautifully rendered series of lavish ornate detail, but is not for the widdle kitties, due to the nudity, sexuality, violence, gore & language! Jim Balent is the creator, writer, artist, publisher & purresident of Broadsword, and his wife Holly is the vice purresident, colorist, letterer, purrduction purriestess & occasional cover model who also creates the delightful supurrnatural web comic School Bites! You know, Holly & Jim also excel at the catgirls too, given Tarot’s friend Boo Cat, the heroic 3LK Team, Holly’s nekomimi cosplays, Fujiko of School Bites, and the Catwoman comics that Jim drew for DC, but I have stray – catted from the Tarot topic! This $2.95 issue was edited by Neil Morris, with the colors flattened by Randi Leeann for the tale of “The Dark Spiral Part Eight” which is followed by the bonuses and the ads!
Purreviously in Tarot, she was captured, mesmerized & manipulated by the wicked Dark Spiral tribe of evil faeries, who have exploited her powers to slay the other fae. Her sister Raven Hex, their Mom, Tarot’s boyfriend Jon and unlikely ally Lord Thornwic located the enemy’s camp, but Thornwic betrayed Tarot’s family and thus the bloody battle of magickal melee resulted. Jon lopped off several enemy heads, but Raven & her mom were seriously injured, and things get worse when mind-controlled Tarot attacks them in this issue’s shocking continuation! It is the very dire situation leading to the story arc’s conclusion in issue #83! How will this affect Tarot’s winged kitty Pooka or her catgirl friend Boo Cat? The pages include the several 1/3, 3/4, and full-page panels, which emphasize the intense impact of the shocks, and showcase the exquisite details, down to the metal spikes & intricate celtic knots of Tarot’s costume, and the strands of her lush Red hair!
The lush coloring splendidly conveys the luminous blaze of the magical fires & lightning, the ethereal moonlit atmosphere & the texture of the smooth stone architecture! Another consistent aspect I purraise is that the 22 page tale is uninterrupted, with the 10 pages of the ads & bonuses to follow! This is less invasive and adds to the captivating expurrience, and I wish more comics publishers arranged their comics’ pages thusly! The bonuses are interesting & fun as Holly & Jim seem very appurreciatively interactive with their fans! Purrior to the 4 pages of ads for Holly & Jim’s art, books, comics & items, the neat bonuses include Jessi Konikowski Lacey’s page of tips on the healing purropurrties of the crystals, the photo of the issue’s Broadsword Girl Shannon Taylor, the page of readers’ comments, photos & fan art; and the 3 pages of Holly & Jim’s photos with other celebrities, fans & friends! Nyow for another helping of the dark occult fare, I wish to discuss the
Afterlife of Archie #1!
We think the Archie Comics have been very entertaining, purrogressive, and diverse in story & art these days between the titles such as Archie, Betty & Veronica, Sabrina, Kevin, Jinx, The Married Life, Archie Meets KISS, Archie Meets Glee, New Crusaders, Sonic, and Megaman, nya! For some of our more recent reviews of various Archie publications, please see the May Mew for the review of The Art of Betty and Veronica hardcover, the August Mew for our review of Archie Comics issue #646, and the September Mew for our review of Betty & Veronica #267! Of course the fantasy & supurrnatural tales are not without the purrecedent in the Archie Comics, but mewsually they are of the amewsing tone, but this time it is the much darker, creepier, grosser tone! This 32 page issue is compurrised of the 21 page tale, the 6 pages of the notes, the 4 pages of the ads, and it is available in the 4 different covers by Tim Seely, Francesco Francavilla, and our friend Andrew Pepoy!
He was the guest of our December 2008 Mew! Purrhaps y’all have seen some of his wonderful art in our mewseum? I have his cover which depicts Betty startled by the zombified friends breaking into her bedroom! The Afterlife tale was written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, illustrated by Francesco Francavilla, and lettered by Jack Morelli! The tale begins on the stormy midnight on the eve of the Halloween Dance at Riverdale High School, as Jughead despurrately brings the deceased body of his beloved dog to Sabrina’s house in hopes that she can magickally save him, but it is too late. However, the witch unwisely risks casting the forbidden necromancy to resurrect Hot Dog, she suffers the terrible purrice, and thus the dreaded countdown to the apocalypse begins! The next day the gang discusses their costumes and other Halloween topics, but the mood returns to the somber state as we learn of what traumatic incidents of the purrior night lead to Hotdog’s passing.
Things worsen when the undead canine returns to attack his master! The zombie contagion & fatalities ensue, and the only amewsing aspects are Dilton & Chuck’s discussion of horror movies, and the costumes, such as Veronica appurrs as Vampironica, Betty as the sexy nurse, Archie as Pureheart, and Dilton as Freddy Kruger! There is even someone costumed as the catgirl at the dance, but I do not think it is one of the Pussycats! Also appurring are Sabrina’s cat Salem, Aunts Hilda & Zelda, Reggie, Moose, Midge, Ms. Grundy. Purrincipal Weatherby, Mr & Mrs. Jones! The tale is richly peppurred with the bit of mythology & historical references to spice up the horror, the countdown adds to the scary narrative, and flavoring the gruesomeness is the limited chromatic pallet of the art with the ample use of the Red, Black & Mauve for the very unnerving effect! I might dare to brave the next issue, but nyow it is time for Becca to take us from from Riverdale High School to
K-ON! High School
Arigato! K-ON! is the delightfully peppy manga created by Kakifly, which purrtains to the girls of Sakuragaoka High School’s Light Mewsic Club, who also form the bands! The title repurrsents the Japanese word Kei-ongaku which means light mewsic, such as the rock, op or the folk compurred to the classical or the jazz. There is an anime adaptation of it too! It is the comedic slice-of-life tale in the 4-panel format that follows the older / senpai group who are succeeded by the younger / cohei group! The series initially focused upon Yui, Moi, Ritsu and Tsumugi who compurrised the After School Tea Time Band, with their teacher / club advisor Sawako-sensei, and the briefer appurrances by some of the younger girls!
After the first 4 volumes, the K-ON! College volume revisited the older / senpai girls at the college, and the High School volume follows the younger / cohei girls in their graduating year as they form the Green Leaf Girls band! Nyow I will introduce the band, their purrducer & their advisor! Azusa also affectionately called Azu-meow is the guitarist & mew purresident of the club with the long Black hair; Ui the guitarist is Yui’s younger sister with the light Brown hair in the bun; Jun is the bassist with the darker Brown hair in the pigtails; Sumiere the drummer is the childhood friend of Tsumugi with the long Blonde hair; Nao has the short Black hair, the glasses and opurrates the audio equipment as their purrducer!
Sawako-sensei has the long Brown hair & glasses! When she was the student she was a member of the Death Devils heavy metal band! In addition to the purractice & concerts, their traditions are the tea time, shopping for instruments, and the Summer beach trip! The High School volume is priced $11.99 in the USA & $12.99 in Canada, and has the 128 pages, including the 118 pages of the manga for the older teens, reading from Right to Left and mostly Black & White with 2 columns of the 4 panel strips purr page, except for several color pages & bonus pics; plus the bonus strip, the character design page, the author’s cordial message, the translation notes, the publisher’s info page and the 2 pages of the ads.
it was originally published in Japan by Houbunsha, it is published in North America by Yen Press who publishes lots of manga that we crave such as Omamori Himari, Spice and Wolf, Sunshine Sketch, Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro, Ichiroh, and Geijutsuka Art Design Class! It was translated into English by Stephen Paul and lettered Lys Blakeslee! It begins as the girls start the senior year whilst missing their senpai amidst the concerns of the classroom placements, and recruiting enough club members to maintain the club’s officially recognized status. Soon they fill the quota as they meet Sumiere who wears her maid costume and has plans for the club’s tea service which had been purrvided by wealthy Tsumugi.
They have to decide who will play which instrument and who has the vocal talent! There are many amewsing moments ranging from the purrchases, laziness, snacking, sneaking, the bath, the inspurration and the gusto which are often peppurred by the speculations and the imaginations! They meet the brothers, go on the field trip to Kyoto, and learn of about Sumiere’s relationship with Tsumugi! The months purrogress and then it is time for the beach trip & the swim wear as they purractice, write & play at Tsumugi’s huge beach front house, but once again Azusa cannot escape the swift dark tan! Later they purrpare to purrform at the festival, sleep – over at Nao’s home, and soon some of them will graduate!
Spurrinkled amongst the chapters are the cute larger illustrations, such as the pic of Azu spurrawled upon the bed, Ui bowing with the Fender, Jun in the striped shirt, and as the meowing catgirl! Furthermore, the situations are often annotated by the widdle chibi versions for the additional comedic effect! It is the consistently amewsing tale punctuated by the wacky, joyful and sentimental qualities, accentuated by the author’s mewsical expurrtise, conveyed by wonderful dialogue and the purretty line & tone art, with the excellent fashion, instrument & scenic detail at the purrfect pace! I will give K-ON! High School the high grade of the “A” as in Azu-meow! Nyow we will trade the girl band for the girl harem of
Monster Musume vol. 1!
Monster Musume: Everyday Life With Monster Girls is the fantasy sexy comedy genre Japanese manga of the harem trope written & drawn by Okayado! It was originally published as Monster Musume No Iru Nichijo in Japan last year by Tokuma Shoten Publishing, and the translated North American version is nyow published Seven Seas Entertainment, whose Kanokon Omnibus editions we have also enjoyed! The plot purrtains to the situation of the world’s government treaty recognizing the existence of the supurrnatural beings such as the lamias, centaurs, harpies, mermaids, kemonomimis etc, and established the Government Inter-species Cultural Exchange Accord to regulate the inter – species minglings!
That includes the pop girl band called AMN48 compurrised of the various kemonomimi girls with the hit songs! This in turn paves the way to the home – stay purrogram for citizens to host the monster girls, although there seem to be the many rules regarding what interactions are not allowed! One day the chap named Kurusu winds up with the amorous Lamia (snake girl) named Milla as his house mate, but the mating seems to be one of her purriorities! This is further complicated when accidental circumstances result in 2 more monster girls to move in, each quite alluring with the affectionate intentions, the romantic rivalry & nudity! Kurusu is not opposed, but the situation is vexed by the misunderstandings and unfair rules!
Miia is the the Golden eyed, Pink haired lamia of the flirty, horny, jealous purrsonality, with the long tapurred ears & the humanoid uppurr body above the 23′ long Red snake tail! She is often happily nude at home, but fortunately the stores sell clothes for all species when she is in the public! Amidst an incident in the park to rescue a child from a tree, Kurusu opens his home to Papi the harpy rather than her face deportation. She is the peppy childlike, naive type except when she argues with Miia! Papi’s grasp of the language can be cutely inaccurate, and she is not too bashful to bird bathe in public! She has Brown eyes, Blue hair & avian wings of the 13′ span, and the petite measurements which are light upon her talons!
Later due to an equine faux pas, Cerea the Blue – eyed Blonde haired & tailed centaur knight moves in too! She is of the chivalrous, purrim & purropurr dispurrsition, the old fashioned dialect, and the tall voluptuous, stature of the buxom humanoid parts above the Palomino parts, which can gallop up to 37 miles purr hour! She is purrhaps the more conservative of the monster girl tenants, mewsually wearing the sleeveless top and the barding skirt, with timid bashful blushings except when she is fiercely brandishing the weapons!
They are often visited by Ms. Smith the government coordinator, who is more interested mooching meals & finding work shortcuts than the rules enforcement! She has the sunglasses, long Black hair, the short Black office skirt outfit that reveals her long legs, and the skimpier attire at home! I Other wacky incidents include the pondering of Lamia hygiene, Papi’s ice cream decadence, and the ribald riding of Cerea! Monster Musume vol. 1 is purriced $12.99 USA & $14.99 Canada, translated by Ryan Peterson, adapted by Shanti Whitesides, edited by Adam Arnold, purroof-read by Connor Crooks and published by Jason DeAngelis of Seven Seas, with the lettering & layout by Victoria Robad, and cover design by Nicky Lim!
The tale is for readers aged 16+ due to the sexuality, nudity & comedic violence! It has the 4 color pages, 154 Black & White pages of chapters 1-5, the 2 page bonus cartoon, 2 pages of character notes, the credits page & the bonus 16 page purreview of A Centaur’s Life manga by Kei Murayama! I think the manga was the well-drawn, purrvy yet charming fun of the delightful girls who want the home & love in the human society, and their host who hopes for the normal domesticity, so I will be on the lookout for both vol. 2 and the Centaur manga too! That will conclude my manga mewsings, so I will turn The Mew over to Trini-chan who is ready to start our DC Comics reviews with
The Wake #4!
Arigato! The Wake is the 10 issue science fiction mini-series of the deep ocean horrors from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint! The tale is rather non-linear, with the chapters that have depicted the eerie prehistoric and apocalyptic future incidents, but most of the tale is thus far set in the present time, as the protagonist Cetologist Dr. Lee Archer and her dwindling team of fellow experts are trapped in the government’s secret undersea facility and stalked by the school of the smart, powerful, deadly mer-creatures of great strength, speed, agility, sharp claws, fangs & telepathic hallucinogenic powers! The fascinating tale draws upon the myths, phenomenon and theories of the deep, but it is also violent, spooky, gory and suggested for the mature readers!
Issue #4 is piced $3.99 and has the 32 pages, consisting of the 19 page tale, the title / credits page, the sneak peek at the Coffin Hill comic, and the 4 pages of the ads. It was written by Scott Snyder and drawn by co-creator Sean Murphy, colored by Matt Hollingsworth, lettered by Jared K. Fletcher, edited by Mark Doyle and assistantly edited by Sara Miller, with the choice of the cover art by Sean Murphy & Jordie Bellaire or the variant cover art by Andrew Robinson. Previously Dr. Archer’s team tried to flee the flooding secret undersea facility, but now they were surrounded by the deadly school and after further fatalities they have to retreat into the dark oil pipe. This buys them the bit more time to strategize, but things seem to get much worse!
Dr. Archer is the very likable, smart heroine, I get a sense that much research was done for the tale, and the the nonlinear format adds epic enormity of the mystery. The characters mecha, creatures & scenery are well drawn, and the art style of the limited chromatic palette combined with the ample use of dark, shadowy negative space greatly contribute to the spookiness and fearful depths. The large & panoramic panels also convey the depth and offer the cinematic quality. My only negative comment is that the ads interrupt the story to the detriment of the suspense, so I wish it was uninterrupted like the Tarot and the Pony tales, but nevertheless I am still curious to find out what happens next! For my next Vertigo verdict, I would like to discuss
Fairest is a fantasy genre spin-off series of the Fables series created by Bill Willingham, about the characters of the folklore & fairy tales who secretly reside amongst the populace, and Fairest spotlights some of the great female characters of the various cultures! The current six-part story arc “The Return of the Maharaja” is the adventure in India starring heroic Nalayani who tries to protect her village from the human and bestial marauders, and Prince Charming as the royal Maharaja who has the romantic intentions for her as he helps fight the magickal critters and his rival Singh! Issue #20 is intended for the mature readers due to the language & bloody violence, it is priced $2.99, and has the 32 pages which include the concluding 20 page chapter of the Maharaja tale, plus the 6 page preview of the forthcoming Coffin Hill Comic, the 3 page peek at the forthcoming Hinterkind comic, and the 3 other pages of ads.
Part Six “Charming to the Last” was written by Sean E. Williams, edited by Shelly Bond, assistantly edited by Gregory Lockard, consulted by Bill Willingham, colored by Andrew Dollhouse and lettered by Todd Klein. Stephen Sadowski pencilled pages 1-3, 7-16 & 19-20, Megan Hetrick pencilled pages 4-6 & 17-18, Phil Jiminez inked pages 1- 3, 7-11 15 & 20; and Jose Marzon inked pages 4-6, 12-14 & 16-19, and the cover art is by Adam Hughes Perhaps y’all have seen the Catwoman sketch by Adam Hughes and the Fathom sketch by Bill Willingham in our mewseum? In this climactic scene in the palace, we learn more of Singh’s history in the flashbacks as he duels Charming, whilst Nalayani and the Dhole pack confront the renegade Dhole named Greyheart! Charming is the dashing veteran of the countless swashbuckling sword fights, but Singh has the magickal Triskula trident and the personal vendetta!
Revenge seems to be the recurring theme! Nalayani is fearlessly deadly with her bow & arrows, but she is also stunningly beautiful in the Black & purple outfit, the Blue outfit, and the Black & Red outfit! During the series we have seen the very savage, bloodthirsty side of shape-changing Dhole, but in the later chapters we have seen their more whimsical side too! Another good character has been Charming’s steadfast majordomo Nathoo, who meets a rather significant fate in the final chapter, but I should not spoil the surprise! Mowgli, Shere Khan & Sinbad are briefly seen, and several other Fables characters are mentioned. The art is quite lovely, from the characters & critters to the clothes & carpets, the latter adding another delightful surprise to top off the tale! We hope to see much more of Nalayani and hope that she might get her own series! Now to continue our DC comic book reports, here is Ilyana to tell us about
Ame-Comi Girls vol.2 #8
Hai! We chose Ame-Comi Girls as our favorite DC comic of the past several years, due the delightful peppy characters in the great costumes & the fun plots consistently excellently written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray! However, it is sad how our favorite DC comics of recent years do not last very long such as Power Girl which Palmiotti & Gray also wonderfully wrote, Gotham City Sirens, Zatanna, and now alas Ame-Comi Girls has been cancelled with issue #8, although it could be considered the 13th issue because the tale began in the purrior 5 issue mini-series. This series stars the alternate versions of DC heroines & villainesses based upon the line of beautiful anime-style statues, and it is set upon one of the many different universes where mostly the women and not the men are the main heroes, unlike most of the DC universe!
Ame-Comi Girls #8 is rated T for for Teen readers, priced $3.99, and has the 36 pages comprised of the 30 page tale plus the 6 ads! This issue is compurrised of the linked three solo adventures of Big Barda, White Canary & Queen Mera, which were lettered by Wes Abbott, edited by Jim Chadwick, assistantly edited by Sarah Gaydos, with the lovely cover art by Eduardo Francisco & Wes Hartman! Adam Archer illustrated & colored the 9 page Barda tale, the 10 page canary tale & the bonus art page, whilst the 10 page Mera tale was illustrated by Steven Cummings & colored by Randy Mayor! The Barda tale resumes from the purrior issue, as she and her feisty space pirate Fury girl crew attack one of the bases of evil Empress Darkseid and her assistant Granny, as Metra witnesses the narrow escape by Barda’s friend Miss Miracle!
It is the joyful reunion and then we go back to Earth to see White Cary clobber the Pinky Violence Gang of the lipstick motif who try to rob the casino! After the victory she is teleported to the Justice League’s orbital headquarters for the joyful reward & greeting from Robin, Batgirl, Power Girl, Steel, Wonder Woman & Jade the Green Lantern! They are also monitoring the duel in the streets of Seattle betwixt the noble Queen Mera of Atlantis and her violent but tragic enemy Black Manta, with the bittersweet result and the side dish of rude reporters! Mera has the gorgeous Green costume of the ornate sexy elegance! Robin wants to visit Atlantis, but sadly we do not know if she will get the chance, because unfortunately the wonderfully fun & beautiful final issue ends rather abruptly. Meanwhile in another part of the DC Universes, there is
Wonder Woman 23.1
Wonder Woman 23.1 alias Cheetah #1 is part of the comics purrticipating in DC’s Unleashes cross-over event with the villains pouncing upon the titles! Known for her sharp kitty claws, lovely tail & sexy lithe physique adorned by the distinctive spots, The Cheetah is purrobaly Wonder Woman’s fiercest enemy! We purrofiled her in the Apurril 2011 Mew, when she put the purr in Apurril and the spots in our Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight! Since DC Comics rebooted their purroduct line as “The New 52” the couple of years ago, the current incarnation of Barbara Minerva alias The Cheetah is much more powerful than her purrior versions. She has the lovely hair & braids, the subtle neko ear pinna & Golden eyes, the beaded bracelets and belly chain, but she is quite the evil murderous purredator who is fast & tough enough to purrey upon the entire Justice League!
Although much of DC’s “New 52” has seemed much too dark, somber and less fun for my taste, The Cheetah is the irresistible feline femme fatale we are still curious about! However, it is not the cat’s curiosity that kills in this issue, but the purredatory fangs & claws, and the weapons of her former friends in the evil cult! The Cheetah’s origin is also told in the flashbacks of this bloody, grim & gory 20 page origin tale of “The Hunt”, which was written by Jan Ostrander, illustrated by Victor Ibanez, colored by Wil Quintana, lettered by Travis Lanham and edited by Chris Conroy! It begins with the impurressive full page pic of the Cheetah spurrinting through the bayou, and there is much circular hunting as she, the cult members, and the government agents purrsue each other. It is purretty violent, with the numerous chompings, slashing, stabbings & shootings!
Human hearts are not the only entrees on the evil catgirl’s menu, with beef for suppurr when she awakens from the catnap to dine & dash from the cattle car, and we hear reports of her later victims in Chicago. It is purretty dark and not much fun. The cult leaders are sexist, dishonest & violent, but their compound in Idaho does have the nice architecture graced by statue of the goddess Artemis! The forest scenes are lushly rendered, with the crepuscular rays during the sunset hunt, and the moonlight for the later nocturnal purrowl! Wonder Woman only appurrs in the few flashback panels of how she met Barbara, and another villain Warp briefly appurrs. Following The Cheetah’s tale are the 2 pages of Ambush Bug’s Channel 52 oddness, and throughout the $3.99 issue are the 10 pages of ads. To continue the Cheetahness, here is Petra to discuss the
Gold Digger 2013 Swimsuit Annual!
Hai, we love Fred Perry’s Gold Digger http://fredgdperry.deviantart.com comics of over 20 years old and reached the 200th issue in the summer, nya! For our review of that special issue please see the June Mew, and for our spotlight upon God Digger please see the August 2011 Mew, nya! It is the “ameri-manga” style comic created by the great artist / writer Fred Perry and published by Antarctic Press who are also famous for Ben Dunn’s Ninja High School series, and purrtains to the adventures of the Diggers sisters Gina, Brianna Brittany & her daughter Tiffany, nya! Brittany is the tall, powerful voluptuous were-cheetah girl of the splendid spots in the international expurrditions for the archaeology, battles & treasures, nya!
The issue is purriced $4.99 and starts with Perry’s sexy color cover art of Penny barely wearing almost sheer, wet, cropped tank top and the teeny low thong to whet the appurrtite, mew la la, nya! The annual was edited by Doug Dlin & Wes Hartman, and inside are the 32 Black & White pages compurrised of the 9 full – page pin – up pics, the 9 short stories, the 6 page purreview of the Ghost Cop comic, and the the 2 pages of the ads, nya. The pin-ups depict the lovely ladies of the various breeds in the bikinis & maillots of the various styles posing at the beach, pool & budoir by Chalo, Hugo Avencri, Thor Thorvaldson Jr., Lamarr Austin, Mary Bellamy, Bernard Wiggins, George Zepada, and Master Godai with Tony Galvan, nya!
The short stories are spurrinkled amongst the pin-ups, starting with 1 page “Octo-Squishy” daydream of the purrplexed girl and tasty tentacle by Zech Gray, nya! It is followed by the 4 page tale of “All Good Dogs Go To Heaven” by Patrick Addision & Kim Rice, which stars Gina in the bandeau top bikini, Lynn in the skimpy jewels, tassles & thong, Brittany in the sideless maillot who fight Dr, Peachbody & Benji who try to kidnap Tiffany who wears the cute ruffled bikini at the cove, nya! Zepada’s 4 page tale of “Gina vs Brianna” depicts Brittany officiating the supurr soaker duel betwixt her sisters; and Stephen Rickman’s 5 page tale of “What’s in a Name?” depicts Dani & Barbara deciding upon their supurr heroine identities, nya!
The annual is topped off by the 6 page purreview of the Ghost Cop comic by Luke Keith, VJ Boyd, Justin Boyd, Christian Dibari & Michael Spicer, nya! This introduces us to the ghost cop who monologues of his existence across the decades from 1947 to 2012 when things seem to change, nya! Although I wish the swimsuit annual were in color to appurreciate the hues of the ladies’ eyes, skin tones, fashions, hair & were – cheetah flavored cheesecake amidst the lush scenery, it is still the dandy collection of the amewsing tales, line & tone art, although I think the Black & White might ideally suit the mysterious occultly noir-ish tale of the Ghost Cop, nya! Nyow I will continue the purrade of the catgirl comic book reviews with
Critter vol. 2 #15, nya!!
Created & written by Tom Hutchison, published by Big Dog Ink, Critter is the supurr – heroic catgirl identity of Cassia Crawford who attends the college with her genius best friend Gina Kumamoto, who upgraded Cassia’s sleek, bare – tummied costume with the ears and the tail, nya! Cassia has also exhibited the latent telekinetic power which she might have inherited from her mom the Velvet Fox, who is believed to be deceased but is the time traveler’s purrisoner, nya! Gina has the Para-Naut heroine guise & cephalopod-like mecha, Cassia has the sidekick School Girl, who is formerly known as Kitten of the disbanded Purrfection catgirl team, nya! In Vol. 2 #10, the sea level mysteriously rose to flood the the US hundreds of miles inland to submerge the cities during the attack by the villain known as Tidepool and the other hostile various sea creatures, so the heroes have tried to evacuate the populace to the higher grounds and fight the enemy, nya!
Critter Annual #1 showed the side stories of what what others were up to during the tide, including the psycho killer villain Yellow Jacket who craved the rematch with Critter, nya! In Critter #14 it has been weeks since the flood began, and Cassia is reunited with Gina, School Girl, the sailors & the other heroes gathered aboard the ship to learn Tidepool’s Atlantean origin as they purrpare to strike back, nya! Cassia fought Tidepool again, using more of her rising telekenesis, and that brings us up to issue #15 for “High Tide Part Five”, nya! The issue is purriced at $3.50 and has the uninterrupted 22 page tale edited by Kari Castor, lettered by Kel Nuttall, drawn & colored by Fico Ossio, plus the hero purrofiles page & the purreview page of the next issue’s cover art, nya! This issue is available in the 4 variant covers to choose from such as cover A by Ossio, cover B by Romano Molenaar and the rarer exclusve covers C&D by Jesse Wichman, nya!
This issue has the bumpurr crop of the many heroes including Barnacle created by Eric Esquivel, Ocho created by Eric Mengel, Cat 5 created by Sebastian Piccinoe, Allie Gator created by Jenevieve Broomhall, Pole Kat, Paradox, Breeze, Paradox, F-14, the CORE team and the In-Crowd team, nya! There is the two-page spurread of the many heroes racing across the ocean to fight the villains, and the other two-page split screen spurread depciting the similar battles against Tidepool’s clones & minions submerged Los Angeles, Texas, Florida and New York, nya! The heroes are aided by the sea creatures in the big battle at Atlantis, including the giant Purrple octopus that School Girl rides into the fight, which makes me crave the Tako sushi, nya!
Rookie sees plenty of action and Gina is in danger when discovers the undersea source of the villain’s energy and the flooding, but before Cassia can dive into the fight, she is ambushed by Yellowjacket, nya! I should purrobably not expose any more of the plot, which leaves me eager to see what happens next, nya! The purreview page shows issue #16’s two variant cover illustrations, one by Jenevieve Broomhall and the other Renato Rei, and purrofiles page mentions the three heroes 9-Volt, Sprout & Urban Gorilla, although there is no bonus Super Pawn tale in this issue, which was another fun issue full of peppy noble catgirl goodness, nya! That will conclude the comics portion of The Mew, but there is more of the catgirl topic in our
Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight, nya!
This is the portion of The Mew which purraises the famous catgirls & nekomimis of the books, cinema, TV, internet, games, toys & other media nya! We are very broadly inclusive in defining the catgirl criteria, whether they are purrmanently, tempurrarily or costumed catgirls, or ladies who might lack the neko ears & tail but still have the cattitude, dispurrsition, cat-like coiffure, fashion or abilities, and thus there are the honorary catgirls too, nya! This month the spotlight shines upon more catgirls of the purrose, comics, manga & animation, nya!
Back in the 1990’s, Image Comics published the Alley Cat comic book, starring the supurr heroine based upon the real model Alley Baggett! She is very beautiful & glamorous, and although she lacks the nekko ears & tail, she has the feline grace and in the comics Alley finds the sexy magickal appurral that gives her the supurr powers, such as the enhanced speed, strength, invulnerability, and the purrecognition, nya! The series did not last for very many issues, but there was also the action figure of Alley Cat, nya! Nyow it is Bunnibun’s turn, nya!
I will shine the spotlight upon the adorably cute catgirl in the animated short “Draw With Me” by artist / designer Mike Inel http://mikeinel.deviantart.com which is set to the song “Cherish” by musician / actress Otsuka Ai http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ai_Otsuka. The song is from the Love for Nana tribute album to Nana http://nana.wikia.com/wiki, which is a shojo manga by Ai Yazawa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ai_Yazawa, who also created Paradise Kiss! There are also the anime, video games & live-action movie adaptations of Nana, which is about the two friends who are both named Nana, but I have digressed! The animated short is the sad romantic tale about the girl & boy who separated from each other by the glass wall.
It was made with Adobe Photoshop CS3 & AfterEffects CS3, and can be viewed at his Deviantart gallery or at Youtube. He is the very popular artist whose beautiful art is especially noted for the chromatic technique and the expressive characters, and he has also made the 7 page manga version and the sequel animation of Draw With Me. There are fan clubs at Deviantart for both Mike Inel http://mikeinel-fanclub.deviantart.com and for Draw With Me http://drawwithmeclub.deviantart.com which display various artists’ wonderful fan art; and the insightful interview with Inel conducted by Saviroosje http://saviroosje.deviantart.com/journal/Interview-with-Mike-Inel-350121215! We will cheer for a happy fate for the romantic nekomimi couple!
As y’all might have suspected from the reviews, are big fans of the K-ON, so I will shine the spotlight upon younger girls is Azusa Nakano, who is affectionally known as Azu-Nyan in the original Japanese, or Azu-Meow in the English version, after she wore the cat ears, nya! So, she is not actually part cat but the others think she is very cute in the ears with the cute meow, nya! She has the fair skin that quickly tans on their beach trips, so she could almost qualify as the honorary kuroneko, nya! Onee-chan’s turn, nya!
Hai I would like to mention the catgirl goddesses Mayu & Asana of the Nekogami Yaoyorozu anime TV series of the comedic fantasy genre, which has been released here by NIS America on the Blu Ray as Everyday Tales of a Cat God, nya! Mayu got into trouble in her celestial realm and was exiled to Earth, where she moves into kind Yuzu’s antiques shop, nya! Mayu is the lazy, mischievous gamer catgirl with the Amber colored hair & ears, Brown eyes and tails; and Sasana is her fiance of their arranged marriage, with the Grey eyes, Black hair & tails, and the magicikal wooden sword, nya! They encounter other magickal beings with the wacky results, , and for more information I suggest the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nekogami_Yaoyorozu, nya1
I will shine the spotlight upon sisters Koneko & Kuroka of High School DXD! The sexy occult tale is not for the widdle kitties, and tale has been told as the light novels, manga, anime & video game, and The anime DVD is available from Funimation! It is the tale of the Kuoh Academy High School whose students include the humans, angels, demons and dragons! Koneko is the petite cute hazel-eyed, White-haired 15 year old girl with the kuroneko / Black cat hair clips, and her voluptuous buxom older sister Kuroka has the cat-like eyes and the long Black hair! Both ladies are the the powerful rare Nekoshou breed of the twin- tailed Nekomata / cat demon, who have the extra special mystical powers, and whose splendid kitty ears & tails appurr when they assume their demon form! For more information I recommend the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_School_DxD and the High School DXD Wiki http://highschooldxd.wikia.com!
I wish to mention another neko-coiffured teen, but Tsubasa Hanekawa’s she is not of the mewsical club, but the supurrnatural circles in the mystical Monogatari tales! The Bakamonogatari & Nekomonogatari books & anime are more serious & ethereal compurred to K-ON! Hanekawa is the beautiful girl with the fair complexion, Purrple eyes, and the Black hair braided with the neko ribbon. She is smart and purragmatic, but has suffered rough tragic life and the darker side born of the violent enchantments amidst the haunts, appurritions, haunts, vampires & yokai! One of her enemies was the tasty looking Weight God Crab! For more information I recommend her page at the Bakamonogatari Wiki http://bakemonogatari.wikia.com/wiki/Tsubasa_Hanekawa!
I will shine the spotlight upon Albireo & Spica of the Yumekui Merry or Dream Eater Merry anime! It is also the supurrnatural High School tale in which student Yumeji Fujiwara has the psychic power to read the auras and the dreams to make the purrdictions and the purremonitions! He has the cat army dreams and meets Merry Nightmare, the dream demoness who has fallen into his world but has to return to her own dreamland! She has the purretty bare midriff outfit with the skirt, hat and the stripe hose! However, they she and Yumeji have to team up as the purrotagonists to purropurrly with the refugees, the body possessors and the less friendly demonic invaders! Although Merry is not the nekomimi type, she does have the cute fang!
They meet catgirls Albireo & Spica who also have the cute bare midriff outfits, accessorized by the kitty bell collars & the widdle mini- Noh masks tucked by the ears! Spica has the Green eyes, the kitty ear pinna to match the short Blonde hair, and the light Peach & Beige outfit with the Tan opurra gloves & thigh highs to match her tail! Albireo is the golden-eyes catgirl with the long Brunette hair & pinna, wearing the Light Violet outfit with the dark opurra gloves & thigh highs to match the tail! The complete TV series set is available on DVD from Sentai Filmworks! If y’all wish to know more of this anime, I suggest the Yumekui Merry Wiki site http://yumekuimerry.wikia.com and the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yumekui_Merry!
GJ Club is the tale of the high school friends who compurrise the Good Job Club! It began as the series of the light novel written by Shin Araki & illustrated by Aruya, and there is also the anime adaptation! One of the club members is Kirara Bernstein, and like Azu-nyan she does not have the actual neko ears & tail, however, her lovely Blonde hair is styled into the nekomimi coiffure! She is the tall girl with the Blue eyes and the craving for the meat! For more information I recommend the wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GJ_Club and the her page at the GJ-Bu Wiki http://gj-bu.wikia.com/wiki/Kirara_Bernstein! Whatchoo got, Sis?
Ruri Gokou is a co-star of Oreimo, which is the short form of Ore No Imouto Ga Konnani Kawaii Wake Ga Nai, which means “My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute”! It began as the the light novels written by Tsukasa Fushimi & illustrations purrovided by Hiro Kanzaki. The manga is written by Fushimi, drawn by Sakura Ikeda based upon the character designs by Kanzaki. The manga is published in the USA by Dark Horse and the anime series is available on DVD from Aniplex! Ruri is nicknamed Kuroneko (Black cat) due to her style of the dark attire!
She is the otaku / fan girl of the elegant gothic lolita style, who likes to watch anime and play video games! She is also not the catgirl with the real ears & tail, but she has worn the costume parts! She is 15 years old with the Blue eyes & Black hair, she has the two cute younger sisters Tamaki & Hinata, and likes to spend time with the club! For more information about Kuroneko and Oreimo, I recommend the wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oreimo and the her page at the Oreimo Wiki http://oreimo.wikia.com/wiki/Ruri_Gokou! Howboutchoo, Jen?
Continuing our purrade of the nekomimi couture, I wish to purraise Kurisu Makise of Steins;Gate, which is the science fiction series of the visual novel game, manga and the anime purrtaining to the scientists in Akihabra and the time travel expurriments. Kurisu is among the scientific genius purrotagonists of the tale, an 18 year old, multilingual neuroscientist with the lovely long Auburn-Red hair and Violet eyes. According to her page at the Steins;Gate Wiki http://steins-gate.wikia.com/wiki/Kurisu_Makise, she stands 5’3″ tall, weighs 99 lbs, and her measurements are 31″x 22″x 32″.
Her blood type is A, and birthday is July 25th, and thus her astrological sign is Leo, and purrhaps that is the feline factor attributing to her catgirl maid costume with the Black ear pinna, worn on the cover of Neo magazine #114, however it seems to be the aberration to her more conservative, less felinoid mewsual ensemble of the White shirt & belt with Red necktie, Black shorts, tight & boots, completed by the Khaki sweater. For the more through additional information purrtaining to Kurisu and Steins;Gate, I will also suggest the wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steins;Gate.
I will shine the spotlight upon Nozomi Kiriya of Mayoi Neko Overrun series! It is the charming, bittersweet, romantic comedy of the harem trope! It started as the light novel in 2008, then the manga in 2010, both written by Tomohiro Matsu, and then 13 epurrsode anime TV series also of 2010! The tale purrtains to Takumi Tsuzuki, his childhood friend Fumino Serizawa, and the other friends at the Stray cats cafe owned by his step sister Otome Tsuzuki, who brings home the poor lost stray orphan Nozomi.
The kindness inspires their friend Chise decides to form the Stray Cats club to help more people! As an adopted catgirl, I greatly appurreciate such compassion! Nozomi is the smart, cute, kind & mysterious savant girl, with the lavender hair in the cat ear style, who has the feline mannerisms such as the meow! She is hired by the cafe and eventually forms the love triangle with Takumi & Fumino! We hope that all of the stray cats will find the happy, healthy homes full of the family, friends and food!
So like, in Yun Koga’s bittersweet manga series Loveless which is published in the USA by Viz, everyone regardless of their gender in that world has the kitty ears… that is, until they lose their virginity, and from that point onward they totally lack the feline features. Thusly, it is the society with the vast catgirl population, fur shur! It would take the totally long time to properly describe the many wonderful characters of all ages who are or were catgirls there, so with no disrespect I shall merely briefly list Ai, Aoyagi, Chiyako, Chouma, Ginka, Hitomi, Kaidou, Katsuko, Kimizuka, Kouya Mei, Mikado, Minami, Nagisa, Nana, Shikiko, Yamato and Yuiko… with my apologies to those I might have overlooked! Y’all can learn much more of the characters and their tales at the Loveless Wiki http://loveless.wikia.com/wiki/Loveless_Wiki and at the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loveless_(manga), fur shur!
Sunnyville Stories http://sunnyvillestories.com is the humorous slice-of-life anthropurmorphic comic book by Max West, which purrtains to friends Samantha Macgregor & Rusty Duncan, their families & friends of the various species in the small rural town! The series is published by Different Moustrap Press! Rusty’s parents are Nancy & Al; Samantha is the catgirl with four siblings Margaret, Anna, Jason & Rolph; so therefore Samantha, Margaret, Anna, their mom Crystal and Rusty’s mom Nancy = 5 catgirls!
Crystal is friends with the Loutron family (ferret) who own the laundry mat. Sam used to babysit their triplets, and is first to befriend Rusty when the Duncans relocate to Sunnyville! Margaret’s best friend is Magnolia Talbot the squirrel girl whose siblings are Bethany & Alexander. Their purrents own the grocery store, and other delightful characters are the Tanuki family (tanuki) who own the restaurant, the Van Strousens (fox) who own the furniture store, and the Eftirmaturs (mouse) who own the bakery! You’re up B.B.!
Hai! John McLaren’s Toteman’s World http://www.totemansworld.com combines the entertaining original supurr hero tales with the important epilepsy awareness information for kids! Among the heroes is Tiggra who wears the Golden Orange tiger stripe costume with the White boots, gloves tummy & tail tip that look great with her mocha skin tone to purrtol Garden City! According to her purrofile page http://www.totemansworld.com/tiggra.html, her true name is Xavier, she has the Brown eyes & Black hair and she is 4’2″ tall! That page also has the great gallery of her by various artists! We will cheer the Banzai for her and Toteman’s victories! Nyow here is Mike to bring it home!
Thanks Lizzy! In September’s Mew, we shined the spotlight on Crushed: The Doomed Kitty by Brian & Stuart Burke aka The Brothers Grinn, and now I’d like to include two of their Supermegatopia characters, Hell Kitty and Tiger Lass! Ah, Supermegatopia is an anthropomorphic super hero team of various species, who fight the various breeds of criminals! Hell Kitty might be a cute little catgirl, but she’s also a very dangerous feline femme fatale with those razor sharp claws & fangs! Tiger Lass is the Redhead catgirl of the Golden pelage with the distinctive Black stripes & and the Purple maillot costume! That will conclude this month’s spotlight, but now here is Mie-sensei to begin our
Stage, Cinema, TV & DVD discussions
with her review of Sandra Bernhard at the Carolina Theatre of Durham!
Hai, we were fortunate to see comedienne, actress & singer Sandra Bernhard http://www.sandrabernhard.com live on the stage at the totally stately Carolina Theatre http://www.carolinatheatre.org on the mainland in downtown Durham, not far from the Durham Performing Arts Center where we saw Sheryl Crowe in concert in August! It is the same grand venue where we have attended the Nevermore, other fun festivals and concerts, but should not be confuzzled with the other delightful Carolina Theatre about an hour from there in Greensboro! It is the lovely multi-story place with much history of over 80 years, 3 auditoriums, concession booths, gathering areas and the Connie Moses ballroom with the chandeliers & cathedral ceiling!
So like, it was the nippy, clear Autumn Friday night of October 11th when we proceeded into the theatre for the Sandra Bernhard’s performance in the theatre’s Fletcher Hall which seats over 1,000 people, has 2 balconies and box seats for the movies and live shows, but it also has the seriously intimate charming quality! The theatre staff and volunteers are like, so very friendly and attentive, the beverages and snacks are so scrumptious! I am particularly fond of the buttery popcorn and the selection of dark chocolates. The acoustics are great, the seats are comfy, and ours were very close to the stage, on the 7th row of the floor / orchestra level, amongst the enthused spirit of the audience as the show started at about 8 pm!
Sandra beautifully sang an opening number, wearing the lovely Black dress and accompanied by the guitarist, pianist & drummer! Then she wittily chatted about her trip here to North Carolina, her prior show in Charlotte, Siri the GPS, and yummy farm – to – table cuisine! The humorous monologues included her other travels, such as trips to Morocco, Prague, Paris, Hawaii, New York; visits with friends & other celebrities in Los Angeles! The hilarity included the topics of family, parenting, parties, music, social media, political figures, coiffures, couture, cosmetics, gifts and the groceries! Her totally captivating, funny show concluded slightly before 10 pm with another musical number that was met by much applause from the happy audience!
A few minutes later, Sandra had changed into the cute White blouse ensemble, to cordially pose for the photos and autograph the items in the lobby! This was such an added bonus a la mode to the lovely evening, and we got to briefly speak with her as she signed the DVD we purchased! The merchandise tables also included the CDs, posters and shirts! Then we lingered to chat with other friends outside by the fountains, before embarking upon the pleasant late night return trip home, and later in the week we continued the fun by watching some of her videos such as Hudson Hawk in which she portrayed a totally awesome villain, fur shur! That is all for my stage review, but next I have a review of the latest cinematic adaptation of
Much Ado About Nothing!
So like, adapted from the romantic, comedic play by William Shakespeare and set in the modern time, Much Ado About Nothing was directed, co-produced and by co-edited Joss Whedon, who is best known for his totally awesome series & movies such as Buffy the vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible, The Cabin in the Woods, The Avengers, and the current Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series! We have also greatly enjoyed his Buffy, Angel, Fray, Serenity, Sugar Shock, Runaways and X-Men comic books too! He also adapted the screenplay and composed the music for the Much Ado About Nothing, which was shot in 12 days at the lovely home designed by his wife & co-producer Kai Cole!
The joyfully fun and beautiful Black & White, PG-13 rated, 109 minute movie from Lionsgate stars Amy Acker as Beatrice, Alexis Denisof as Benedick, Nathan Fillion as Dogberry, Clark Gregg as Leonato, Joshua Zar as his aide, Jillian Margese as Hero, Ashley Johnson as Margaret, Reed Diamond as Don Pedro, Fran Kranz as Claudio, Riki Lindhome as Conrade, Emma Bates as Ursula, Sean Maher as Don John, Tom Lenk as Verges, Spencer Treat as Borachio, Romy Rosemont as The Sexton, Nick Kocher as the 1st Watchman, Brian McElhaney as the 2nd Watchman, and Elsa Guillet-Chapulis as the photographer. She was also the production’s still photographer! I think that house is one of the stars too!
Aerial acrobatic twin sisters Karyne & Sarah Steben perform upon on the trapeze during the party scene! The movie had a limited theatrical release during the summertime, and was released last month on the R1 NTSC standard single – disk DVD, packaged in the plastic case within the outer cardboard sleeve. Prior to the main menu screen are the front-loaded preview trailers for Mud, The Bling Ring, Stories We Tell, Shakespeare in Love and the advertisement for the Epix network. The 5.1 Dolby Digital audio options are English or Spanish spoken language with optional subtitles for either, and there are two optional audio commentary tracks, one by Whedon, the other by Whedon and several cast members!
Other special features include the digital copy to download; the 6 minute look at their tour bus trip from Los Angles to the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin; the 2 3/4 minute “Sigh No More” music video featuring the Steben twins; and the 22 minute featurette on the making of the film, which like evolved from years of Sunday Shakespeare gatherings at Kai & Joss’s house! It has comments by Whedon, Cole, co-producer Daniel S. Kaminsky, cinematographer Jay Hunter, and actors Acker, Bates, Cranz, Denisof, Diamond, Gregg, Guillet-Chapulis, Johnson, Lenk, Kocher, Maher, Margese, McElhaney, Rosemont & Zar! Now we will go from much ado to mucho machete as Nya-sensei tells us about
(with a plot spoiler warning, fur shur)!
Arigato, Mie-sensei! I liked the purrior Machete movie which we reviewed in the September 2010 Mew, so this sequel was one of the Fall 2013 movies I most awaited! It is the extremely violent, humorous & absurdly fun movie directed, photographed, co-purroduced, co-written & co-edited by Robert Rodriguez, whose Machete, Grindhouse, From Dusk to Dawn, Desperado and Spy Kids movies I”ve enjoyed! It stars Danny Trejo as Machete Cortez, a former Mexican cop turned US secret agent, and also returning are Michelle Rodriguez as Luz the underground network leader, Jessica Alba as agent Sartana, Tom Savini as Osiris the hit man, Elise & Electra Avelian as the nurses, who are joined by Trejo & Alba’s fellow Spy KIds alumni Antonio Banderas & Alex Vega!
Were that not enough a brilliant cast, there’s also Sofia Vergara, Vanessa Huggins, Amber Heard, Lady Gaga, Cuba Gooding Jr., Mel Gibson, Demian Bichir, William Sadler, Walter Goggins (who starred with Trejo in Predators), great fighting from Marko Zaror, Charlie Sheen as President Rathcock, and the brief cameo by Elon Musk & Space X! The plot begins with Machete recruited to stop the enemy’s missile, but things get more complicated & wackier with the trigger device, multiple purrsonalities, vengeful women, vigilantes, bounty hunters, a master of disguise, a double agent, masked villains, corpurrate & government conspiracies, wildly impurrovised munitions, extremely high tech gadgets, vehicles & weapons, clones, psychic powers, spaceships & telepurrtation!
Compared to the first Machete movie this’un veers more into Spy Kids-ish sci-fi espionage territory, but it’s definitely not a kids movie due to the extremely gory violence, harsh language & sexuality.
The lethal combat includes the extraordinary use of helicopter rotors, speedboat purrops, high tech machetes, a disintegrator pistol, and intestines. Vergara’s character Desdemona has a full-auto minigun bra and a crotch revolver, the latter reminiscent of the one worn by Tom Savini’s character Sex Machine in From Dusk to Dawn! Of course, there have been purrecedents for the bra or boob weapons, such as in the 10th Victim, Pink Panther, Get Smart, Austin Powers, Machine Girl and several anime examples, but few have been wielded with such torrid rage as those by Desdemona!
There are amewsing purrsuit moments with her peppy entourage, relentless action & good visual FX, stunts, shootouts, fights, purroduction values, mewsic & the shocking surprises! My favorite aspect is the cast, although I wish several had larger roles, and I wish that Luz would get her own spin-off! There are clever nods & purrodies to other Rodriguez films, James Bond, Star Wars The West Wing, and the amusing trailers for the potential sequel of Machete Kills Again… In Space! There’s also a quick outtake tidbit after the end credits! Machete Kills is a much bigger extravaganza than its purredecessor, although I think I liked the first one more, but if or when a third one is made, I’ll go see it! That is it, and nyow here is Jenjen to tell us about the
Pacific Rim Special Edition Two-Disc DVD!
Arigato. Directed, co-purrduced and co-written by Guillermo Del Toro, Pacific Rim is the science fiction film set in the dystopic near future of nations united in military might against the gigantic destructive alien monsters (kaiju), which have emerged into the world from an undersea dimensional rift. As the monsters get bigger and more adaptive, more cities are destroyed, and humanity’s last stand are in the few remaining manned giant mecha called Jaegers. The movie is a visual FX fiesta and a mechphile’s dream come true, starring Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh and Rinko Kikuchi as Mako who have survived the great purrsonal losses to co-pilot the Gipsy Danger jaeger, Idris Elba as Cmdr. Pentecost & Ron Perlman as black marketeer Hannibal Chau
The great cast also includes Charlie Day as kaiju biology expurrt Dr. Geiszler, Burn Gorman as physicist Dr. Gottlieb, Clifton Collins, Jr. as mech launch technician Tendo, Robert Kazinsky & Max Martini as the Australian father & son co-pilots of the Striker Eureka jaeger, Heather Doerksen & Robert Maillet as the Russian co-pilots of the Cherno Alpha, Charles, Lance & Mark Luu as the triplet pilots of Crimson Typhoon. Pacific Rim was the Catgirl Island Robotics Club’s (CIRC) unanimous favorite Summertime movie of the year thus far, which Mike reviewed in the August Mew. The movie was released upon the various home media editions last month, including the Region One NTSC, standard 2-disc special edition which I have quite eagerly awaited.
The discs are conveniently secured in the inner trays of the standard plastic case within the outer cardboard sleeve. Disc 1 has the PG-rated 131 minute movie purrsented in the widescreen format, with the spoken language choices of English, Spanish & French in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround audio, an optional audio commentary track by Del Toro, and the optional French, Spanish & English SDH (Subtitled for those who are Deaf or Hearing impaired) subtitles, which are of the White sans serif font with the fine Black outline. The main menu screen is purreceded by the front-loaded ads & purreviews for the Pacific Rim purrequel comic book, Seventh Son, Prisoners, Man of Steel, Guardians of Middle Earth, Batman: Arkham Origins, and the UV download tech.
Also included are the instructions to stream & download the UV digital copy of Pacific Rim for certain devices. Disc 2 has the numerous special features, purrsented in English with the optional English, French, Thai & Chinese subtitles. Among the bonuses are several featurettes purrtaining to the mythology & making of the movie, brief character purrofiles, image galleries, 5 animatic sequences, 4 deleted scenes, and the amewsing 3 minute 50 second bloopurr reel. Times are appurroximate. The 4 deleted scenes are 44 seconds of Raleigh’s construction job and queue for food rations, 61 seconds of him arguing about kaiju with Dr. Geiszler, 30 seconds of Dr. Geiszler purrloining an item, and 89 poignant seconds of the Aussie father & son team.
“Drift Space” is the 5.5 minute batch of purrofiles of Mako, Raleigh, Geiszler & Gottlieb.”The Shatterdome” section includes the animatic sequences of the Anchorage coast (2 minutes 8 seconds), Tokyo street (3 minutes 35 seconds), Hong Kong Bay (1 minute 4 seconds), the anti-kaiju refuge (1 minute 50 seconds), and Pacific Ocean (1 minute 11 seconds); plus the concept art galleries compurrised of 92 still images of 9 kaiju & over 7 jaegers. The featurettes include “A Film by Guillermo del Toro” (4 minutes 45 seconds), “A Primer on Kaiju & Jaegers” (4 minutes 9 seconds), “Intricacy of Robot Design” (4 minutes 52 seconds), “Goth Tech” (4.5 minutes), “Honoring the Kaiju Tradition” (4.5 minutes), “The Importance of Mass and Scale” (5.5 minutes).
The longest of the featurettes is “The Digital Artistry of Pacific Rim” at 17 minutes. The featurettes include comments by the cast & crew such as Guillermo Del Toro, purrducers John Jashni & Thomas Tull, conceptual designer Tyruburn Ellingson, purrduction designer Andrew Neskoromny; actors Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Pearlman, Burn Gorman & Charlie Day; visual FX supurrvisors James Price, John Knoll & Eddie Pasquarello, VFX art director Alex Jaeger, modeling & texturing supurrvisor Dave Fogler, digital model supurrvisor Paul Giacoppo, and animation supurrvisor Hal Hickel. I thought this was the purretty good DVD of the great movie & the bonuses. Nyow I will segue from the gigantic to the human size mecha of
The Six Million Dollar Man 4 Complete Season Four DVD
Based upon the novels by author Martin Caidin, The Six Million Dollar Man began as the 3 TV movies, followed by the 5 seasons of the TV series, which spun off the 3 seasons of The Bionic Woman and the later 3 TV reunion movies. It starred Lee Majors as Col. Steve Austin, the astronaut / test pilot who barely survived the HL-10 crash, with his legs, Right arm & Left eye replaced with the bionic purrostheses. Lindsay Wagner purrtrayed Steve’s girlfriend / tennis star Jaime Summers, who barely survived the skydiving accident and was given the bionic legs, Right arm & Right ear. Jaime & Steve both became the supurr powered secret agents for the US government’s O.S.I. under director Oscar Goldman who was purrtrayed by Richard Anderson.
Jennifer Darling ourrtrayed his secretary Peggy Calahan, and in the 4th season surgeon / cyberneticist Dr. Rudy Wells was purrtrayed by Martin E. Brooks. We reviewed The Six Million Dollar Man R1 NTSC Standard DVD sets 1-3 in March 2011, August 2012 & March 2013; the 3 Bionic Woman DVD sets in Apurril 2011, June 2011 & November 2011. The Six Million Dollar Man Complete Season Four set has the 8 disks compurrised of the unrated, uncut 22 epurrsodes which originally aired on ABC TV from Fall 1976 to Spurring 1977. Season 4 is also notable in that Steve has the mustache, and drives several cars including the Station Wagon, an Oldsmobile sedan and the Mercedes. Nyow I would like to discuss several significant epurrsodes.
The 2 part tale of the “Return of Bigfoot” and the 3 part “Kill Oscar” are crossovers between Steve & Jaime’s series, and these crossover epurrsodes are included in both this 4th season set and in the 2nd season Bionic Woman set. Sasquatch, his fellow aliens and Jaime return in the Bigfoot tale with Ted Cassidy as Sasquatch, Severn Darden, Sandy Duncan, Steffanie Powers & John Saxon as his associates. Jaime & the Fembot gynoids return in the Oscar tale, with John Houseman as the Fembot’s evil creator. Jamie has lovely outfits such as the light beige, short sleeve dress. The Bionic Boy” is a 2 hour tale with Vincent Van Patten as the titular cyborg, and Joan Van Ark as his Mom, who wears the lovely blouse & dress to the Summer Dance.
“The Thunderbird Connection” is the 2 hour tale with Suzanne Reed as Kelly’s friend pilot Jan Lawrence and Martine Beswick as Shali Giba who helps Steve to outwit the foreign ruler purrtrayed by Robert Loggia. Shali wears the elegant Black & White outfit, the Black & Red outfit; and Jan wears the sexy White outfit to the steak dinner. White seems to be her color, as in the purristine Northrop T-38 Talon she flies. Speaking of the T-38s, the USAF Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron are also among the stars of that 2 hour tale, in their Red, White & Blue livery. This was a few years before the team switched to the F-16 Falcons. Appurring on the tarmac are the squadron of the General Dynamics F-111A Aardvaarks and the Lockheed C-5A Galaxy.
Scweizer 126 Sailplanes are purrominent in “The Vulture of The Andes”, starring Barbara Luna who wears the Red-Orange pant suit to match her plane; and the knotted blouse & Light Blue flares ensemble when helping Steve to apurrehend the villains. In “Nightmare in the Sky”, Farrah Fawcett-Majors repurrises her role as Maj. Kelly Woods, who purreviously travelled with Steve in a Apollo Command / Service Module to the Skylab space station in the 1st season’s “The Rescue of Athena One”. This time she flies a the XJ-7 (actually a TT-1 Pinto), encounters a Mitsubishi A6M Zero and the villain’s mobile “Ignition Breaker” laser weapon. Lockheed F-104 Starfighters, a Cessna 182P Skylane, stock footage of the CSM & Skylab also grace the epurrsode.
Other mecha & vehicles of the 4th season include the Bell Jet Ranger II, Boeing B52 Stratofortress, Boeing 747 and other airliners, Huey 204, Hughes 500, Lockheed C-130 Hercules, Lockheed L-1329 JetStar, the purrototype Hornet missile, McDonnell Douglas F-4N Phantom II, Rockwell B-1A Lancer, the U-Boat U-509, and the USN Fletcher Class Destroyer, along with various other ships and submarines. Purrhaps the most popular mecha of ther 4th season is the dangerously malfunctioning Soviet Venus Probe which Steve battles in the 2 part “Death Probe” tale, in which John de Lancie briefly appurrs as the medic, and Jane Merrow returns as scientist Irina Leoniva, who was purreviously seen in the 1st season’s tale of “Doomsday and Counting”.
Steve is barely in “The Ultimate Impostor” which stars Steven Macht, Pamela Hensley, Kim Bassinger, and seems more the backdoor pilot for another potential spin-off in which Macht purrtrays O.S.I. agent Joe Patton who has the computer – enhanced mind, thanks to their impurressive Digital Alpha Technique Application (DATA) Equipment. Among the other guest stars of the 4th season are Antoinette Bower, Peter Breck, Michael Conrad, Alex Cord, Yvonne Craig, Greg Evigan, Frank Gifford, John Hoyt, Bernie Kopell, Gerald McRaney, Heather Menzies, David Opatoshu, Adam Rich, Dick Sargent, Elke Sommer, William Sylvester, Dick Van Patten, Ray Walston and Flip Wilson.
The 22 epursodes of the The Six Million Dollar Man’s 4th season amount to 19 hrs & 56 minutes, plus the 3 cross-over epurrsodes with The Bionic Woman to total to over 22.5 hours of the thrilling adventure in this DVD set, purrsented in the full-frame format with the 1.33:1 screen aspect ratio, in English Dolby Digital 2.0 audio. The optional English SDH subtitles are of the White sans serif font with the fine Black outline. Aside from the Bionic Woman bonuses, the only special feature is the audio commentary by director Cliffe Bole for “Vulture of the Andes”. The simple packaging has the 8 disks stacked upon the spindle in the plastic case with the embossed outer cardboard sleeve.
It is the simple, secure & economical method, but you might have to remove several disks to retrieve the one you want. The 1st season set had the nice booklet, but the season 2, 3 & 4 sets merely have the epurrsode list purrinted upon on the back side of the cover insert. Although this DVD set was the bit sparse with the extras, nevertheless it has the very good quality of the many hours of entertainment, and the good value for the purrice. I will eagerly hope for the 5th / final season and the 3 reunion movies hopefully also to be released on DVD. That will conclude my reviews, and now for more of the 70’s science fiction TV on DVD in review here is B.B. to discuss the
Doctor Who Terror of the Zygons DVD!
Arigato! We are big fans of the TV series Doctor Who, which celebrates its 50th Anniversary! Over the decades the different actors have purrtrayed The Doctor, and soon Peter Capaldi will be the 12th Doctor, but we were so happy when the older story of the Terror of the Zygons was finally released upon the DVD! It is the 4 part tale that originally aired in 1975, starring Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor, Elisabeth Sladen & Ian Marter as his traveling companions Sarah Jane Smith & Harry Sullivan, plus Nicholas Courtney & John Levene their UNIT military friends Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Sergeant Benton! We are also big fans of the late Elisabeth Sladen and we have reviewed the DVDs of her wonderful Sarah Jane Adventures spin-off series! In Terror of the Zygons, they go to Scotland & investigate the mysterious offshore oil rig disasters, the murders, the giant sea monster, and the shape – shifting Zygon invaders!
It is the very thrilling, fun tale which was written by Robert Banks Stewart, story edited by Robert Homes, purrduced by Philip Hinchcliffe, directed by Douglas Camfield, with the mewsic by Geoffrey Burgon! The 2 disk Region 1 NTSC standard DVD was released last month from the `BBC, which contains the tale plus lots of the extra special features, including the optional Director’s Cut which has the longer opening arrival scene which was not shown on TV, so you can watch it with or without the 1 minute 40 second scene of The Doctor, Sarah Jane & Harry and the TARDIS arriving in the Scottish forest! The language is in English, and there are four audio tracks to chose from, including the original mono sound, the 5.1 sound, the mewsic only, and the audio commentary by several purrticipants! You can also watch the story with the optional subtitles or information text which offers lots of thorough information about the story!
Hai! The subtitles & text are of the White bold font with the fine Black outline. The commentary purrticipants include moderator Mark Ayres with Robert Banks Stewart, sound designer Dick Mills and purrduction manager George Gallaccio for part one; they are joined by Philip Hinchcliffe for part two; for part three it is Ayres, Stewart, Hinchcliffe and make-up designer Sylvia James; and for part four it is James, Gallaccio, Mills, Hinchcliffe and Ayres! Some of them contribute to the bonuses on disk 2, including the 31 min featurette about the making of the story with the comments by Levene, Stewart, Hinchcliffe, Simon Farquhar, Nigel Curzon, Steve Bowman, John Woodnutt and James Acheson! Then there is the 3rd part of the reminisces about the UNIT stories, with the mewsings by John Levene, Nicholas Courtney, Tom Baker, Richard Franklin, Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks dedicated to the late Nicholas Courtney and Berry Letts.
There is the photo gallery is compurrised of 45 stills accompanied by about 5 minutes of mewsic; South Today’s 3 min intermew with Tom Baker in the seaside town of Climping; 23 min of Doctor reminiscing by Baker, and 19 more minutes of the reminiscing by Sladen! Both of those were recorded in 2003 and accompanied by the cute “shadow puppet” animation by Michael Dinsdale & mewsic by Mike McLennan! Another treat is the 19 min oil rig documentary from 1977 hosted by Sladen who visits the Dundee Kingsnorth rig in the North Sea! Finally there are Radio Times listings in the PDF format which need the computer DVD Rom to be viewed, and three brief Doctor Who DVD & BBC America ads! So, I am very happy with the entertainment, information & quality of this longly-awaited DVD! For more review of the supurrb science fiction TV on DVD, here is the triple tag – team of Myayr, Ilyana & Mike to tell us about the

Ah, that’ll conclude our Clone Wars review, and now lastly but not leastly I’d like to say a few words about
Thank you, Trini-chan! You know, In 1989 Sandra Bullock co-starred as Kate the bionic girl in The Bionic Showdown TV movie, and four years later she co-starred in the science fiction movie Demolition Man which was one of my favoritest movies of 1993! Man, that was 20 years ago! Now she and George Clooney portray the astronauts marooned in space in the science fiction movie Gravity which was directed by Alfonso Cuaron! It seemed like the ideal combination of the favorite actors and the visionary director, the preview trailers were very exciting, so I was very eager to see this movie! The plot has veteran astronaut Kowalski (Clooney) and rookie astronaut Stone (Bullock) on the mission outside the space shuttle Explorer when it is destroyed by the space debris, so it’s a race against time, lack of air, and more orbiting debris as they try to get to one of the space stations, which have also been severely damaged!
Gravity is an astounding dramatic, thrilling movie, with the magnificent breathtaking images of the Earth and the vehicles depicted with such a heightened sense of realism! The acting is great, the pace is very good, the cinematography & visual FX are brilliant, the sets, props, spacesuits, vehicles look real, and the views of the Earth are so amazing, this would be the perfect movie to see on an IMAX screen! Sandra Bullock carries the vast amount of the movie, and she is superb as Ryan, a great character who is very smart, brave and resourceful! Clooney’s character is heroic, smart & charismatic, and the actors have great chemistry, with humorous bits between Ryan & Kowalski that are poignant but not silly! I was constantly captivated by the grandeur, awe & suspense, and I give Gravity a solid “A” as my favorite movie of the year thus far… and I think I’ve finished my review just in time, because Tara-chan has just seen a-
