Introductions & what we’ve done since the purrior Mew!
(wearing the Lemon Shark tee shirt, Teal cargo shorts, MIzuno trainers and the Catgirl island baseball cap) Aloha y’all, and welcome to The Mew for our monthly batch of reviews & discussions about fun stuff! Today’s holiday Mew comes from the breezeway of Petra’s beautiful beach house here at Catgirl Island, where hopefully later we’ll be joined by a few other friends for the Aftermew Luau! I’m Mike, the show’s ‘Purrducer’, and here are The Ladies of The Mew!

(her business purrtner catgirl wearing the Croaker purrint ring-closure bikini) Hola! Thank you for hosting this month!
Doitashimaste, nya! So what has everyone been up to since last month’s Mew, nya?
Since Halloween I have not been quite as busy sewing the costumes, but there are still the few cosplayer requests, and the oppurrtunity to stitch & knit the holiday items! Given the purrticularly festive month, Lizzy & I have been helping more at the food drives & the shrine which will bustle with the Fuyu matsuris!
Hai we are mostly training the appurrentice miko which is the irony as it seems like only yesterday when we were the Jokin at the shrine! Myayr’s costume business may have diminished but Rebecca and I have stayed fully booked at the spa to pamppurr the holiday visitors from the nippier mainland climate!
We have been selling the deluxe lomilomi gift packages! Fortunately we still have time for the late hot salsa dance and DVD night. We finished the post – apocalyptic genre so now we are watching the Winter horrors such as The Abominable Snowman, The Shining, The Thing, 30 Days of Night, and Rare Exports!
I have focused upon the Robotics Club’s next robotics derby, the Kyudo Club’s Winter tournyament, the yoga studio, and with the Winter semester of the belly dance classes about to end, my students are signing up for the Spurring semester and purracticing for the All – Star Festival at the Purrforming Arts Center.
I have been surfing with Kara, dancing in Jen-sensei’s class, volunteering at the mewseum with Tara-chan, and helping her & Vonny with the boat! We are also excited about the island festivals and the food drives! I have also collected a few more Monster High items which I will talk more about later in The Mew!
Oh gosh let’s see, there is the dance, the donations, the mewseum, the charters, my cats, and – and my pony report, nya! With the nippier climate on the mainland, the migrations to the island have resulted in more of the interesting nature photos, although the local deer have continued to elude my lens, nya!
Tara-chan and Trini-chan have been purracticing for the dance and my drumming circle will purrvide the purrcussion, nya! They have been the big help with the charters which have reeled in the Bluefish, the Groupurrs, Mullets, Snappurrs, Sea Bass, Stripurrs & the Yellowfins with much of the meat donated, nya!
The mermaids have been helping with the charity clam & oyster drive and I have been helping Bun with the cake baking, nya! The other beach volleyball teams are all purrticipating in the baking since it is the post season. Otherwise I have been busy as mewsual at the mewseum of art & the artists league, nya!
Hai, and just as we won the volleyball tournament, I hope to top last year’s record for the carrot cakes! Otherwise when I have not been busy at the mewseum and the league, I have been reading, decorating, gardening, and looking forward to the family reunion! So how are things at the magick shop and the dojo?
Things are fine with the happy customers at the magick shop and the good brisk business for all of the farmers market with the purrticipations in the food drive, but I cannot believe how fast the year has gone by, and I am purrparing the special, sale, the workshops & the social activities for the Winter Solstice!
The magick shop was her fated destiny! Jenjen has tried to purrsuade more modeling but I have been busy with the dojo, the gym the tournyaments, the charity and helping sis when I can, although I did read some comics, and we attended the supurrb purrformance by Mie-sensei’s repurrtory company in the grove!
Arigato! I was glad that Ilyana could attend the show before she went back to the mainland for her studies, but we hope to see her again soon! Otherwise I have been volunteering, choreographing the foxfire, teaching the golf, and like totally looking forward to the all-star show! Mike’s turn!
Ah lessee. well, since the NC Comicon which Myayr will report on, I’ve tried to catch up on my reading, writing & art amidst the holiday errands, visits & preparations… and we were excited about the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, which I’ll discuss a bit later! So let’s move right along and get started with
Our Miscellanous Mini-Mewsings!
Hai! Several girls as cats were seen on the Syfy Channel’s Face Off: Naked and Painted special with Red, Heather, Nix & Wiser of the Naked Vegas bodypaint studio! We got to glimpse the woman body painted as the feline femme, and the three ladies’ painted bodies forming the leopurrd face! We have dabbled in the body paint for our cosplays, but we mewsually had the costumes on too!
I purrticularly liked the Naked Vegas epurrsode with Claire Sinclair and the 8 other lovely ladies in the paint as the solar system and as retro sci-fi pin up girls!
I love the body paint artistry, and we have displayed the local body art at the mewseum, nya! I purrticularly liked the steam punk & sword & sorcery themed epurrsode of Naked Vegas, with the girls in the paint as Lady Mechanika and the other girls as the Victorian steamy sci-fi style, nya! Then cosplayers Jessica & Jill were painted as the Warrior Purrinces & the Reptile Queen who merged to form the winged dragon girl, nya! One of the other cosplay contestants at the con was the graceful Catwoman!
At the 5th NC Comicon there were several catgirlish cosplayers purrowling about, including the “Golden Age” Catwoman in the caped Purrple outfit, the “Modern Age” Catwoman in the Black tights, the Dark Knight Rises Catwoman, Marvel Comics’ Black Cat, various other catgirls and elaborate furry costumes too, nya! Myayr will have the more thorough con report coming right up, nya! Speaking of Catwoman, The Joker’s daughter has bound & submerged her in the fish tank on the cover Catwoman #24 illustrated by Rachel & Terry Dodson, nya! Not only is it the deadly drowning trap, but it is also the cruel joke for her to be denied those surrounding tasty fish, nya!
Speaking of the ladies of the meowy millinery, I wish to thank Angela Clay Helms of Mourning Daily Publishing for the cute kitty hat we got at the con, nya! We will be reviewing their latest Mythical Magick book later in the show, nya! We saw our past guest Nikki Lemonade there, who also makes the kitty hats, nya! In the other kitty hat mews, Jade Thirlwall of the girl band Little Mix wore the nekomimi hat when she Jesi, Perrie and- and Leigh-Anne graced the October / November cover of Girl’s Life magazine, nya!
Of course, it is only appurropurriate for us to cheer for the purrotagonist with the keen senses, climbing & hunting purrowess as she pounces upon her purrey in the wild! To top it off, when the heroine’s name is Katniss, we will be going to the theater to see Jennifer Lawrence repurrise that role in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and hope that she is the victorious Kat!
Katniss is not the only huntress archer we want to see on the big screen, because son it will be the time to go see Evangine Lilly purrtray Tauriel the sylven daughter of Mirkwood in The Hobbit: The Desoaltion of Smaug! She has such splendid supple ears! We reviewed her 6″ action figure wayyy back in the February Mew, so we have been anxiously awaiting this 2nd Hobbit movie!
Speaking of the girls who hunt in the wild, we enjoy the adventure of Moonsinger the wolf, alias Luna in her human girl form, in the original serialized urban fantasy tale of Okami no Hime by our friend Sharon Williams! Y’all can read it at Sharon’s gallery Deviantart http://rose74.deviantart.com! As of December 1st the tale was up to chapter 22! We are cheering for her victory too! We have other wolf girls to also mention this month, such as Howleen, Clawdeen, Nozomu & Yuki in our reviews of Monster High, Kanokon and the Wolf Children!
Lizzy and I recently watched the Animal Planet TV series Raised Wild, which purrtains to anthropologist / TV purrsenter Dr. Marie-Ann Ochota’s international investigations of the poor feral children. One epurrsode purrtained to sad tale of Her name is Oxana Malaya, known as The Dog Girl of Ukraine, the neglected girl who took on the mannerisms of the neighborhood pups, and spent much of her life in the orphanage.
Oxana is now the adult residing at the Barabol facility & farm in the Odessa purrovince, where she seems to have the more pleasant life of the agricultural purrsuits after much of the rehabilitation. IT seemed the tranquil place, and she seemed to enjoy the visit & talks with Dr. Marie-Ann Ochoto, and we will purray that Oxana and that all other children will have the happy, healthy, purrospurrous lives with family & friends.
It is the purrticularly festive month here at the island, as we give thanks for all we are blessed with and celebrate the cultural holidays such as Toji, Christmas, Omisoka, Kwanza, Boxing Day, Mew Year’s Eve and other events, nya! We like to decorate the festivities, and it is nice to see the diverse species, races & breeds repurrsented by the ornamentation, nya! Some of my favorite ornaments for 2013 by various companies include Kitty White, Snoopy, the Ponyville ponies, Ariel the Little Mermaid, the various other purrincesses, angels & faeries, nya!
Hai, I was grateful to see that the fae continue to be commemorated by the beautifully sculpted ornaments, and seemingly of the full-scale size too, such as Hallmark’s cute widdle Daisy Fairy in her pretty petal skirt, and the amusing Tinkerbell ornaments! Tink definitely has the talent of physical comedy in the tumble over the sewing spool, fur shur!
I was rather pleased to see the November cover of American Cinematographer magazine, which is graced by Sandra Bullock as astronaut Ryan Stone orbiting the Earth in her EMU suit by Hamilton for the feature article on Alfonse Cuaron’s movie Gravity. It is my favorite movie of the year this far, which we reviewed last month.
Another favorite star is Mary J. Blige, who beautifies the December cover of Shape in the White Elsabeth Ragiani bikini top & L Space bikini bottom. Inside the issue, she wears the Pink bikini top by Malia Mills & the matching skirt by Versace; and for her workout pictorial she wears the Pink bra top by Vipe & the Black leggings by Spirit!
I was glad to see Calum Waddell’s 6 page interview with Michael Fink & Douglas Smith in Star Trek magazine #47,regarding their FX work on my all-time favorite movie Star Trek – The Motion Picture, which turns 34 on December 7th! I uh promised the ladies that I would not ramble on again about the movie, so that’ll do it for our warm – up mini – mewsings, and now we’ll jump right into the reviews, starting with Myayr’s
NC Comicon 5 Report!
Arigato! The NC Comicon http://www.nccomicon.com is the fun comic book convention sponsored by Ultimate Comics http://ultimatecomics.com, a nice comics shop on the mainland in Chapel Hill We have attended all five of their cons and seen it steadily grow bigger each year! The first 3 cons convened at the Outlet Mall in Morrisville near RDU airport, but last year the con relocated to the Durham Convention Center! Durham, Chapel Hill & Morrisville, are purrt of the Triangle Area on the mainland, along with Raleigh, Cary, Carrboro & Garner! The con returned to there on Saturday & Sunday November 9th & 10th, plus the advance set-up time for the dealers, artists & guests on Friday!

Some of our past guests were there such as Pacozord, Chef Ron, Sparky, OB-1, Phil Lee, Nikki Lemonade & Violet Arcane! Panel rooms A & B were for the main events & purresentations, whilst meeting rooms 1 – 4 were for contests, workshops, photos & Legos!
Also off of the main hallway was the ramp into the very stately Carolina Theatre which screened the ComicsQuest film Festival full of the movies based upon the comics on its three screens! We have been to several film festivals & live shows at the Carolina Theatre http://www.carolinatheatre.org which is the grand lovely place of over 80 years old, including Sandra Bernhard’s live show there which we reviewed last month! The event staff & volunteers were friendly, attentive, helpful, and everyone was courteous, careful & patient during the set -up purrocess! When the con opened to the attendees on Saturday morning, there was the long line of fans of all ages, races, genders & styles there for the fun!
Among the great guests were Neal Adams, Josh Adams, Frank Cho, Bob Burdon, Richard Case, Tommy Lee Edwards, Sanford Greene, Heidi MacDonald, Ron Marz, Gail Simone, Dan Jurgens, Afua Richardson, Bernard Chang, Christos Gage, Tony Harris, Jamal Igle, Bob Keen, Dan Parent, David Rorriguez, Cary Nord, Geoff Darrow, Jeremy Bastian, Jeremy Whitley and several other artists & authors! It was especially nice to see our friends from Mourning Daily there again, Sarah Dill and Kerry Lynn Thompson again, who we last saw at Heroes Con in June! It was so neat how everything was in the nearby purroximity, with plenty of the comfy seating areas to mingle with friends in the hotel lobby!
The artists & dealers sold the comics, toys, posters, memorabilia, videos, jewelry, plushies, art & trinkets! Friday night’s entertainment included Chris Hardwick at the theatre and the live mewsic at the Armory across the street! The bands included Goodbye Titan and Jack the Radio! The film festival started on Friday, and the movies included Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman: The Movie (1966), Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, The Crow, Diabolik, Dick Tracy, Megaforce, Mystery Men, Superman II, Hardware, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Saturday’s purrogramming included the topics of Legos, local artists & writers, Valiant Comics, all – ages comics, LGBT Comics, and the Neal Adams Q&A session!
Sunday’s purrogramming included the topics of the zombies, artist’s block, Bob Keen’s purrsentation, DC’s New 52, comics publishing, Vandroid, genders in comics, the creature design workshop, the short films and the costume awards! Sunday did not seem as bustling as Saturday, but there were still many friendly fans, cosplayers, collectors, authors, artists, publishers & dealers there for the good time! There seemed to be the couple hundred costumed folk in attendance, repurrsenting the characters from comics, cartoons & anime, cinema, TV, games, the various fantasy characters & festive styles! That included the male & female cosplayers of all ages, including the widdle kids, and the cross-players!
Marvel characters included the Black Cat, Black Widow, Carol Danvers, Jean Grey, X-23, Rogue, Iron Man, Thor, Deadpool, Spider-Man, Capt America, Hawkeye, Loki, Wolverine, and we were delighted to meet Laurel & Laura as Misty & Brunhilde, whose photo appurred in in Fearless Defenders #10! DC Comics characters included in various quantities the Batgirls, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Poison ivy, Power Girl, Robin, Troia, Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, The Flash, The Question, Dr. Midnight, Capt Marvel (Shazam), The Scarecrow, The Joker & Bane! The game costumes included Halo, Tomb Raider, Soul Caliber, Mortal Kombat, Streetfghter, Mario, Legend of Zelda, Silent Hill & Assassin’s Creed!
Repurrsenting Star Wars were Leia, Boba Fett, Deathwatch, Stormtroopers & Sith Lords, and repurrsenting Doctor Who were various Doctors, companions, Dalek, girls in TARDIS & Dalek dresses! The Studio Ghibli characters included Kiki, San & No-Face! There were many other cosplayers as characters of Disney, Star Trek, Power Rangers, Firefly, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Labyrinth, Adventure Time, KISS, Vocaloid, My Little Pony, Homestuck, military & furry costumes too! Violet was there both days in different gorgeous outfits! The weather was nippier than here at the island, but still sunny & warm enough to congregate outdoors in the courtyard by the fountains, the Batmobile replica & the food trucks!
Between the trucks, the hotel & theatre fare, and the numerous cafes & restaurants within the two blocks there was plenty of nearby delicious food! Before we knew it, it was 6 pm on Sunday, with the time to say goodbye to the friends we met and to help our dealer friends pack up! The movies continued well into the evening, but after the packing we rendezvoused for the suppurr purrior to the road trip back home! It was such the fun weekend with close to 6.000 in the attendance, and we wish to thank all of the guests, artists, dealers, staff, volunteers, fans & restauranteurs who contributed to the fun, and we hope that we can do it again! That is all of my con report, and nyow it is time for this month’s
The topic purrtains to our favorite occult expurrt & mystical heroines & anti-heroines of comics, part one: DC & Marvel Comics!
Yep! Last month’s Lightning Round topic pertained to our favorite female vampires, so this month we’ll begin the topic of our favorite heroines & anti-heroines who study, investigate or fight the magick, monsters or occult predicaments! These ladies might be mortals, mages, undead, demons or goddesses, who appear in the medium of sequential art medium, such as comic books, newspaper strips, web comics, graphic novels, manga and manwha! It’s kind of a big topic, so for now we’re just focusing on those of DC and Marvel! So… are y’all ready to “conduct the lightning”?

Ah, that’ll conclude this month’s Lightning Round, but we’ll continue the topic next month with favorite heroines of the occult & magickal interest from other comics! Speaking of Frigga and other Asgardians, now here’s Lizzy to begin our
Cinema, TV & DVD Mewsings
with her review of Thor: The Dark World!
Hai! We have enjoyed the Thor, Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America & Hulk movies that are set in the same shared Marvel Comics universe so we were very eager to see this latest Thor movie! For our review of the first Thor movie, please see the June 2011 Mew, for our review of Captain America: The First Avenger see the August 2011 Mew, and for our review of The Avengers movie, see the May 2012 Mew! In this sequel which was excellently directed by Alan Taylor, the supurr hero Thor is reunited with his girlfriend Dr. Jane Foster, his brother evil Loki, their Asgardian & human associates when the ancient evil dark elves return after thousands of years to attack Earth & Asgard!
The supurrb returning cast includes chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as King Odin, Rene Russo as Queen Frigga, Natale Portman as Jane, Kat Dennings as her assistant Darcy, and Stellan Skarsgard as physicist Dr. Erik Selvig, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Jamie Alexander as Sif, Ray Stevenson as Vostagg, Zachary Levi as Fandral, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, the quick surpurrise appurrance of Chris Evans as Captain America, and the quciker customary appurrance of Stan Lee! This time they are joined by Christopher Eccleston as Malekith the ruler of the dark elves, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Kurse, and Jonathan Howard as Darcy’s intern Ian!
There are several changes in the movie version compurred to the dark Elf tale of the Thor comic, but that is to be expected in these movie adaptations of the comics, and I was mostly very pleased with almost everything about this movie! I liked it more than the purrior Thor movie! I wish Frejja, Hogun & Odin’s father King Bor had larger roles, but they do have some great scenes, especially Freja”s duel with the villains. Her final scenes in the movie are quite impurressive, beautiful, thrilling & dramatic. I wondered where the S.H.I.E.L.D agents were during the incidents, although at least this was somewhat addressed this in the later epurrsode of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series!
Ian & Dr. Selvig were unfortunately regulated to silliness at their expense, which is sadly often the fate of the supporting heroes of a series, but they are still the very likable characters! The movie does seem slightly rushed and I wish the whole history of the dark elves was told a bit differently, and allowed to unfold without so much expositional monologue in the movie’s purrologue. However, I like the tale’s plot, character development, dialogue &mythology, the good balance of the drama, humor & action, and I think the entire cast is wonderful, the movie is very well written, designed, photographed & edited, with the beautiful sets, costumes, locations, FX, sound design & mewsic!
I was also quite pleased by the lack of distracting, unappealing cinematic techniques such as crash or snap zooms, shaky cam & speed ramping, with the moments of any skow-mo kept to the minimum! The widdle zooms were the one aspect of The Avengers that I disliked. I do not wish to spoil much of the Thor plot, however I should mention that there are two bonus scenes during the end credits that you have to wait for! One is a widdle coda to the plot, and the other is the mewsual bridge to hint at the next movie in the series, and I will give Thor: The Dark World the grade of the “A” as in Asgard! I will have more Marvel to review later in the show, but nyow here is Mike to comment upon
Doctor Who “The Day of the Doctor” (with some plot spoilers)!
Thanks Lizzy! Just over a year after The Mighty Thor debuted in Marvel Comics, Doctor Who premiered on BBC Television in November, 1963! Between the finale of the show’s 2012-2013 season “The Day of The Doctor” special which aired on November 23rd, there’s been lots of anticipation, excitement & speculation about what the 50th anniversary might bring. Prior to the 50th anniversary special, we were treated to the online mini-episode with the 8th incarnation of The Doctor (Paul McGann who returned to the Planet Karn amidst the Time War, where the Sisterhood of Karn helped him to regenerate into the “War Doctor” (John Hurt), leading up to to “The Day of The Doctor”!
Then it was finally time to gather around the TV on November 23rd to watch the global simulcast of 50th anniversary special, which was also shown in 3D in certain theaters! The Day of the Doctor was written by executive producer Steven Moffat and stars Matt Smith, David Tennant & John Hurt as The Doctor, Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald, and Billie Piper as an artificial intelligence’s image of Rose Tyler! Jemma Redgrave portrays the U.N.I.T. organization’s leader Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (daughter of the late Brigadier), Ingrid Oliver as her assistant Osgood, Joanna Page as Queen Elizabeth I, and a cameo by Tom Baker as The Curator which was quite overwhelming!
There are Time Lords, Daleks, Zygons, and quick appearances by The Doctor’s other incarnations! The locations include Galifrey, different TARDIS control rooms, present & 16th century England; and there are many references to past characters, incidents, events & comments! The plot pertains to the 11th Doctor (Smith) who is brought to a secret UNIT gallery in London to investigate mysterious artifacts, while elsewhere the device appearing as “Rose” opens the portals to send him and the War Doctor (Hurt) to the past to meet the 10th Doctor (Tennant) and the Queen, with ramifications of The Doctor’s actions which will affect The Time War, the Daleks and Gallifrey!
It seemed a bit rushed, but I thought the characters, revelations, developments, references, mythology & surprises were terrific! The special had excellent performances, locations, sets, props, costumes, make-up, stunts, FX, photography, sound & music in the humorous, thrilling & poignant scenes to make “The Day of The Doctor” a wonderful 50th anniversary gift! Now we’re looking forward to this year’s Christmas Special with it’s introduction of Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor! We might have a review of that in next month’s Mew, but moving right along with this month’s reviews, now I’d like to say a few words about Walt Disney’s latest animated movie
Based upon The Snow Queen by Han Christian Anderson, Walt Disney’s 3D CG animated musical feature film Frozen was written by Jennifer Lee, Chris Buck & Shane Morris, directed by Lee & Buck, produced by Peter Del Vecho, executively produced by John Lassiter, with the music by Christophe Beck and songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez. The voice cast includes Kristen Bell as the Princess Anna, Idina Menzel as her sister Elsa who becomes the Queen, Jonathan Groff as Kristoff the rugged hero with a reindeer named Sven who both help Anna, Josh Gad as Olaf the snowman created by Elsa, and Santino Fontana as Anna’s suitor Prince Hans.
The plot pertains to Princess Elsa of Arendelle, who was born with the magickal power to create vast ice & snow but has trouble controlling it, and because Anna was accidentally injured, Elsa has kept the power a secret and isolated herself from others, including Anna. Years later during Elsa’s coronation as the new Queen, her powers are unleashed and exposed to the fear of the crowd. Arendelle is encased in Winter as Elsa flees to solitude in the mountains, but Anna pursues her, determined remedy the disastrous situation and their family relationship. In spite of her power & lovely fashion style, she is the tragic, lonely, frightened, feared, sympathetic character.
Anna is especially delightful as one of my favorite new Disney princesses, full of compassion, bravery, determination, tomboyish qualities, adorable cuteness & perky heroism! It’s not quite a perfect movie for me, as it was just a wee bit predictable, and I thought Olaf the comedic snowman character was unnecessary silliness- although to be fair, he is brave and selfless. Otherwise, I have very high praise for the many aspects of the movie, such as the plot, pace, characters, dialogue, editing, designs, scenic art, character & FX animation, voices, songs, music, the balance of humor, action and the bittersweet drama! This might be the most beautiful movie I’ve seen this year!
The movie is preceded by the “Get a Horse” animated short which combines the late 1920’s Black & White Disney style of Disney animation & characxters with contemporary 3D CG animation for a meta – fictional delightful romp, including the archival voice of Walt himself! Oh and make sure to stick around for the end of the credits, not just to hear more of the great music, but for a post – credits tidbit! Compared to prior Disney animated features, I’ll rank Frozen up there with Tangled, which is pretty high in my opinion. I loved it! Ah, I guess that about sums it up, so I’ll turn it over to Trini-chan, who wishes to tell us about another animated movie–
Monster High: 13 Wishes!
Arigato! We are quite fond of the Monster High dolls & animated tales! It is amazing how quckly the franchise has grown, and how so many characters & toys there are! For our review of the Escape from Skull Shores animated movie, please see the May 2012 Mew, and for our review of the Friday Night Frights / Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love DVD please see the March 2013 mew! 13 Wishes is the recent animated movie of which is available upon the standard DVD and the Blue-Ray, but I am just reviewing the former! The R1 NTSC standard single disk DVD is in the plastic case, with no booklets or inserts aside from the widdle product brochure, and the front cover art is the gorgeous scene of Frankie, Draculaura, Clawdeen & Gigi in the beautiful costumes!
Gigi Grant s the delightful genie introduced in the tale along with her evil shadowy sister Whisp, who are freed from the lantern by Howleen who then gets the 13 wishes! As with many of the genie wish tales there are the consequences and perils if the wishes are selfish or unwise, and the troubles begin at Monster High when Howleen tries to hastily solve everyone’s problems via the magic, and things only escalate when she desires to be more popular, and Whisp becomes the bad influence in order to gain more power! Some of the sub plots include Cleo’s own popularity, the troubled romance betwixt Lagoona & Gil; Abbey’s campaign to become the student president; and the dangerous stunts attempted by Clawd, Manny & heath for a TV show!
The rest of the vast cast includes Twyla, Ghoulia, Spectra, Deuce, Venus, Rochelle, Ms. Bloodgood, Meowla, Purrsephone, Toralei, Catty, Wydowna, Operetta, Rebecca Steam, Jinafire, Skelita, Invisibilly, Scarah, Jniafire, Eyera, Gory, Mr. Hackington, Holt & Jackson, Crach Maxxon & and Fawn the fairy, plus lots of other recurring background students & creatures! Prior to the main menu screen are the front-loaded ads for the 13 Wishes video game and the Frights, Camera Action animated movie. The main menu functions are selecting scenes 1-12, the language set up, viewing the bonuses, the previews, and playing the movie which is of approximately 73 unrated minutes presented in the anamorphic widescreen format of the 1.78:1 aspect ratio!
The spoken language choices are English, Spanish & French in Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, with optional English SDH , Spanish, French subtitles in the White bold fans serif font! There are 3 bonus animated shorts of about 2.5 minutes apiece: “Department of Monster vehicles in which Frankie gets her driver’s license, “Royal Pest Sitter” featuring Rochelle’s pet Fiso, and “Cookie Creeper” in which the cookie dough monster attacks! The previews section includes the ads for Frights, Camera, Action, Friday Night Frights / Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love, Barbie: LIfe in the Dream House, and American Girls’ Saige: Paint the Sky! There is also the 3 minute sneak peek for Ever After High, which is about the high school for the children of the fairy tale characters!
I thought that the 13 Wishes movie had the good plot & pace with the important message amidst the humor & action! I like the characters, the art, animation, sounds & music, and one of my favoritest aspects is the great voice cast! Gigi, Wisp & Fawn are neat new characters with such lovely costumes! Fawn has the splendid ears, Gigi & wisp have the nice Henna decor, and new costumes are so dazzlingly colorful, the realm within the lantern is beautiful & immense, and I think this might be my favorite of the Monster High tales thus far! This is just the tip of all the Monster Highness we will review today, but Howleen, Clawdeen & Clawd are not the only werewolf siblings to discuss, because our next animated DVD review, here is Petra to tell us about the
Arigato, nya! We loved director Mamoru Hosuda’s purrior animated movies The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars, so we have been extremely eager to see Wolf Children which was released in theaters in 2012 and here on DVD last month, nya! For our review of Summer Wars, please see the march 2011 Mew, nya! The very beautiful yet bittersweet plot purrtains to the kind, sweet, smart hard-working college student named Hana, her daughter Yuki & her son Ame, nya. As the student, Hana fell in love with the kind chap who is the lycanthrope, who tragically died to leave Hana the widowed single mom. This would be difficult for anyone, especially with the small budget & no income, but it is more difficult for the family when the children are werewolves, nya!
They are so cute but it must be kept the secret, nya! When Hana is evicted from her apartment, she moves to the abandoned house in the rural farming community. The children enjoy the nature & nearby wilderness, but there difficulty anew for poor Hana who has to repair the house and learn to raise the crops! However as the season pass, there are the joyful and tragic times, and the family becomes purrt of the community there, with the kind neighbors, the employment, and the children’s school friends, nya! However, as the siblings get older, they must deal with not just the mewsual burdons of growing up, but their lupine half too, nya! Hosuda wrote & directed the movie, and the character designs are by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto who also worked on Hosuda’s purrior movies, nya!
I am purrticularly fond of his work on The Wings of Honneamise, Gunbuster and Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, and Dot Hack Sign, nya! The mewsic is by Takagi Masakatsu, and the original Japanese voice cast includes Aoi Miyazaki as Hana, Haru Kuroki as Yuki, Momoka Ono as younger Yuki, Yukito Nishii as Ame, Amon Kabe as younger Ame, Takuma Hiraoka as Yuki’s classmate Sohei, and Takao Osawa as the wolf man, nya! It is the magnificent, beautiful, emotional movie with the poignant story & characters, the brilliant design & animation, supurrb voice actors, sounds & mewsic that will bring the tears, so I will give it the high grade of the “A” as in Ame, nya! The 117 minute, PG rated movie was released on the Region One NTSC 2 disk DVD by Funimation, nya!
It has the nice pic of Hana carrying widdle Yuki & Ame on the front, and the disks are secure but easily removed from the trays within the case, nya! Disk 1 starts with the front – loaded trailer for Summer Wars purrior to the main menu, with the movie in the widescreen format of the 16×9 ratio, in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround audio in the spoken language choices of Japanese or English, with the optional English subtitles in the very legible White bold sans serif font, nya! Another audio option is the feature-length commentary by English ADR director Mike McFarland, who is joined one by one by English dub voice cast members Micah Solusod (Ame), Lara Woodhull (younger Yuki), Jade Saxton (Yuki), Colleen Clinkenbeard (Hana) and dub sound mixer Nathaniel Harrison, nya!
I tend to purrfur hearing the original language for any foreign film, but I will commend the English version’s cast & crew for their excellent purrformances & achievements, nya! Also on disk 1 are the 2.5 minute US trailer for Wolf Children, plus the trailers for Fairy Tail, Dragonball Z, Sankarea, Sakura Wars, Guilty Crown, Eureka Seven, and the ad for Funimation’s site, nya! Disk 2 starts with the trailer for Haibane Renmei before the extra features, nya. The extras include Wolf Children’s 93 second original Japanese trailer & 34 second teaser, 2 purrmotional videos at 3 minutes apiece, the 16 minute purromo video with the director’s comments, and 5 Stage Greetings by Hosuda & some of the cast members which accompanied the purremiers & events in the Summer of 2012, nya!
These include greetings at the June 18th Japan purremier (16 minutes), the June 25th world purremier in Paris (7 minutes), July 10th theme song release in Tokyo (almost 10 minutes), July 21st opening day greeting (just over 17 minutes), and the August 7th Hana appurreciation day greeting (about 6.5 minutes), nya! Momoka Ono & Amon Kabe wore the cute costume wolf ears, nya! For the beautiful “Mother’s Song” song release, vocalist Ann Sally is accompanied by composer Takagi Masakatsu at the Piano, nya! I am so glad that hana got her appreciation day because she has endured so much, nya! I am very pleased with the quality & extras of the DVD which I will give it the high purraise nya! That is all of the Cinema, TV & DVD portion, so nyow I will purrsent the latest
Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, nya!
For those here for the first time, the mewseum’s Galleries 1 – 6 display illustrations & photos by Mike, whilst Guest Galleries 1 & 2 display images by other folks with their purrrrmissions, nya! On the web site, the most recent pics are on the bottom row of the gallery’s small “thumbnail” portions of the pics. You have to click on those portions to see the full pics, nya! Nyow In Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html is the Star Wars – inspired “Jedi Purrincess of the Felucian Jungle” collaboration by Rebecca Brogden http://www.rbrogdenart.com, her husband Brian & Mike, nya!
In this scene, The Purrincess has escaped from the slavers who have purrsued her into the Felucian jungle, but she has the Jedi purrowess and nyow she has retrieved her Pink beam light sabers, nya! Purrhaps she will claim the bounties on the slavers, or serve them to the giant carnivorous plants for suppurr, nya! Brian photographed Rebecca, who is wearing the licensed Star Wars™ Princess Leia costume made by Rubie’s Costumes; whilst Mike photographed the pitcher plants, rendered the sabers, composited & manipulated all of the elements using Photoshop CS2 & the mouse, nya!
Now on display in Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html is the illustration of the “Meowy Miko Mom Malina” by Mike, rendered with the Photoshop CS2 & the mouse, nya! Malina is the daughter of Aki, and the mama of the twins Leilani & Alanasera, nya! Purrhaps y’all have seen the images of those relatives by Rebecca and Mike, nya? Like her mama and daughters, ‘Lina was also the miko / shrine maiden in her younger days and has retired from that the service, but she stays purretty busy as the purrent, community volunteer, and the purrofessional book translator & editor, nya!
She is the kind, purragmatic, purrompt, spurritual & wise purrson of the “O” blood type and the Gemini sign born in mid June, nya! Her favoritest foods are the oysters, eel, shrimp cocktails, crab cakes, pumpkin pie and the nilla creme, nya! Her hobbies are reading, calligraphy, fortune telling, cooking, volunteering, dancing & cycling, so that the costume still fits thanks to her healthy active lifestyle and her high catabolism, nya! In this scene in the shrine garden she helps with the lanterns, nya! Our mewseum is fortunate to be graced by more images of Jedi & Miko, nya!
Nextly is Mike’s pic of “The Kynndred Spirits” gathered on the shore, nya! The kynn repurrsents the Kitsune (fox), the Yousei (faerie), the Nekomimi (catgirl) & the Ningyo (mermaid), nya! These girl friends are enjoying the morning chat purrior to the breakfast, shopping and the cocktails nya! This widdle illustration was pencilled then inked with Micron pens, colored with Purrismacolor markers & pencils & Copic markers, scanned into the computer, and then digitally spurruced up with Photoshop CS2 & the mouse, nya! So what do y’all think, nya?
I think the focus, exposure, levels and contrast are effective in the Jedi pic.
It seems like the seamless combination of the manipulated elements, nya!
I love the taste of vegetables, but I hope the carnivorous plants do not crave me!
The Purrincess could chop them into the salad with the sabers! Rebecca is so purrky & purretty with the purriceless “Who’s next?” glance!
Malina was the inspurrational influence on Lizzy and I when we were the appurrentices!
Hai and I recognize that purrticular spot in the shrine’s garden by the Tachi-Gata lantern!
I can see the family resemblances in the Malina, Aki, Alanasera & Leilan pics!
They are the great neighbor ohana and – and the dear part of our multicultural community which is well – repurrsented by the kynn pic, nya!
The foxy Lavender yukata and the hot Red cheongsam are just short enough to not get damp in the shallows!
I like the faerie’s Pink bikini & purreo, the mermaid’s starfish earrings & the traditional clam shell bra too!
Star fishy fishy fishy! We must investigate the boutiques!
Thank you for presenting the art!
Dooistashimaste, nya! Nyow it is time for Becca to begin our
Magazine Mewsings with
Our Favorite Recent Fish Photos & Appurrtizing Images, nya!
Hai! This is the portion of The Mew in which we mention our favorite recent photographic or illustrative images that depict the delicacies from the deep, which have appurred on the recent covers of the purriodicals, such as the lovely Largemouth caught on the cover of Bassin’ vol. 2 #5, the tasty Trout on the Fall cover of Fly Fusion, the Goldfish I’d like to gobble on the September / October cover of Popular Fishkeeping, and those mouth – watering Mollies on the cover of Practical Fishkeeping #12!

I must purrsevere until tongight’s luau, even though the frigidly flavorful Purrch is on the cover of In-Fisherman’s 2014 Ice Fishing Guide; the Tang, Tetra & Beta are on the cover of Aquarium USA’s 2014 Annual, another Tang is on the cover of Marine Habitat #17 but I wish it was on my plate, and finally the Snake River Finspotted Cutthroat is the front cover fish for Jospeh R. Tomelleri’s 2014 Trout of North America Calendar! We are so blessed and thankful for our island’s bumpurr crops and bountiful catch, but on the sadder note, there are many less fortunate ones who despurrately crave the nutrition, homes & care, including some of the animals that appurr in

Now on the lighter purrodicals note, here is Trini-chan to tell us about
Monster High Magazine #4!
Arigato! Nyow I will continue the parade of Monster High reviews with the look at the latest issue of their magazine, which is published by Titan, who also publish the magazines devoted to Star Trek, Star Wars, Barbie, Dora and the other fun topics! The editor is Jenny Jowett, the art editor is Emily Morris, the senior editor is Natalie Clubb, the assistant editor is Tom Williams, the art assistant is Siobhan Gallagher, and the publisher is Nick Landau! The magazine is licensed by Mattel, and this Fall 2013 issue is priced $4.99!
It has the 32 full color pretty pages (including the covers) full of the peppy Monster High articles, art, puzzles other activities, fan contributions, the contest and the 5 pages of the ads, starting with mews about the “We Are Monster High” music video & vocalist Madison Beer! Much of the issue pertains to the 13 Wishes movie, including profiles of Gigi Grant, pop star Catty Noir, and Howleen’s best friend Twyla, with the 2 pages of images from the movie, the page about Gigi’s multi-colored hairstyle and the page of Catty’s song lyrics!
The centerspread poster of Gigi Howleen’s older sister Clawdeen, Frankie & Draculaura in their gorgeous clothes from the genie lantern! Gigi’s Red & Blue keyhole top is so pretty above the Black capri pants with the gold embroidery to match the jewels! Draculaura looks fangtastic in the Magenta & Black dress to match her cute coiffure! Howleen looks so superb in the widdle Black & Gold dress with the split outer Purple skirt! Frankie brings the couture voltage in the sleeveless White, Black & Blue ensemble with platform sandals!
After the horrorscope pages is the fang mail page with the photo of Jasmine’s Monster High pinata, Caitlyn’s Draculara fan art, and the photo of Alex & her mom cosplaying as Draculaura! Her mom has the fangs! Speaking of the cosplay, the full-page display ad for Rubie’s Costumes has the photo of the kids’ Halloween cosplay as Draculaura, Skelita, Clawdeen, Frankie & Abbey! You know, we considered the Monster High theme for our own Halloween group cosplay, but instead this year we chose the Omamori Himari theme!
The style continues with the 2 pages of fashion picks by Clawdeen, Frankie, Lagoona, Skelita, Draculaura & Ghoulia who has such a delightful undead dialect! There are 8 questions with hip-hop dancer Chachi Gonzales plus the sample steps of her Monster High dance choreography; and finally there are 7 pages of puzzles, questionnaires & other fun activities peppered by the pics of Gigi, Cleo, Draculaura, Spectra & Clawd! We will have more Monster High reviews later in the show, but now I will turn The Mew over to Mie-sensei to begin our
Manga Mewsings & Comics Critiques!
with her review of Mythical Magick Vol. 2!
Arigato! It was so nice to see the folks of Mourning Daily Publishing http://www.mourningdaily.com including artist Angela Clay Helms again at the NC Comicon! We have met them at that con and WhatTheHell?! Con, and have some of their totally delightful art, plushies, trinkets & comics! Their fun comics include The Purrfect Adventures; Suburban Fighters, Super Zero High, The Hunted, and Mythical Magick! We have 3 pics by Angela in our mewseum, the “Happy Holidays” catgirl http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/45.html, Mike’s slightly mature pic of “Purrsephone” which Angela colored, http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/83.html, and the playful scene of “The Three Sisters” with kittens http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/84.html!
We reviewed Mythical Magick Vol. 1: Lemuria, Land of Light and Dark in the December 2011 Mew, we have been eager for Vol. 2: Atlantean Revenge, a 6″x9″ Black & White trade paperback comprised of the 75 page tale plus the 5 pages of the ads & color covers for $10.99! So like, In Vol. 1, the girl named Tanya was affected by a magickal artifact spirited away from the museum by The Three Sisters to the kingdom of Lemuria, to learn that she is the lost amnesiac incarnation of Queen Titania with the dormant super powers! She encounters many creatures and people of the various species in the fabled cities which are totally in need of rejuvenation due to the xenophobia & pollution by the humans of the Earth’s surface.
Her next destination is the undersea kingdom of Atlantis, where she meets King Poseidon in Vol. 2, and although he welcomes Titania, she cannot talk him out of commencing the global attack upon the surface with disastrous storms, deadly sea monsters & undersea armies! Can she even save the family who raised her? Chapter 1 of Vol. 2 continues the cute peppy charm of the art, dialogue & travelogue aspect that permeated Vol. 1, as Tanya is still getting adjusted to the magick and her Titania persona, diving to the undersea kingdom of Atlantis with Oberon & the Three sisters who meet Merrill the mermaid, but things become more totally serious when they meet angry Poseidon, who launches the attacks in chapter 2!
Chapter 3 is even more disturbing & heart breaking, and probably not for the widdle kitties as the fatal mayhem escalates and we follow a few survivors who try to escape or fight back! One of them is named Kimberly who wears a Purrfect Adventures kitty shirt, but we see over a dozen more lives brutally slain by the waves, creatures & Atlantean troops! Tanya is not happy at all of this and decides to get involved, but I should not reveal more of the plot or what happens in chapters 4 – 6, or the pureview page for Vol. 3! We have to find out what happens in Mythical Magick and in The Hunted, which also left on the cliffhanger! Nyow for the world where the different species co-exist much more peacefully, Bunnibun wishes to discuss
Kanokon Omnibus 5-6!
Arigato! Kanokon is the supernatural romantic / sex comedy manga written by Katsumi Nishino & illustrated by Rin Yamaki, originally published in Japan in 2008- 2009 by Media Factor Inc. and the translated North American version published Seven Seas Entertainment, whose editions of Monster Musume we have also enjoyed! There are also Kanokon light novels, and the anime! We reviewed the anime in the April 20111 Mew! It is the tale of Chizuru the frisky fox girl with amorous intentions for Kouta, the human student at Kunpu Academy which is populated the yokai who pose as the human students! To complicate things are the other romantic rivals, powerful enemies, and the mysterious, antagonistic Kudzu Leaf organization comprised of several clans!
Kanokon is quite wacky fun, but it is rated for readers of ages 16+ because of the sexuality, nudity, ribald humor, language & violence! In addition to Chizuru & Kouta, the recurring characters include Nozomu the rival wold girl, Chiziuru’s brother Tayura, home room teacher Sahara – sensei, coach Yatsuka – sensei, class president Akane, Kumada the big bear spirit, nosey wealthier friends Yooks & Kiriko, cute widdle half frog spirit Mio & her boyfriend Omi In Omnibus 5-6 which reprints manga volumes 5 & 6, for the Winter holiday they go to the Tamanoyu Ryokan, a hot springs resort which is owned by Chizuru’s flirty mom Tamamo the nine tailed fox, and managed by Yukihana the snow woman! The steamy time results, but not just due to the hot springs!
That is because the house beverage has the potent aphrodisiac affect on the yokai. To further complicate things are the relationship between Chizuru & Tamamo, the sleepwalking giant named Daidarabotchi, Minori who claims to be Kouta’s sister, her suspicious cohort Nue, and the expensive bill for the lodging & amenities! After the snow resort, further naughtiness resumes back at school and Chizuru’s boobies mysteriously shrink. We also meet freshman student sisters Ren & Ai Nanao, who are very cute but they are secretly demon hunters who have targeted Chizuru! for the Kudzu Leaf organization However, they are also very sympathetic because they are very poor & hungry, so perhaps Chizuru & Kouta’s kindness & food will win their hearts & tummies!
It is charming, zany & well drawn, but not for the widdle kitties due to all that sexy “fan service”! This thick paperback is priced $18.99 in the USA & $21.99 in Canada, the book reads from right to left, and it was translated by Ryan Peterson, adapted by Shannon Fay, lettered & laid out by MA. Victoria Robado, proof read by Katherine Bell, copy edited by Rebecca Scoble, managing edited by Adam Arnold, with the logo design by Courtney William, cover design by Nicky Lim, and published by Jason DeAngelis of Seven Seas! It collects the mostly Black & White 324 pages of the manga, including the 4 color pages, 5 character profile pages, comments about the light novels, extra story tidbits, the credits / publishing page, and the ad for other Seven Seas titles, such as–
A Centaur’s Life vol. 1!
A Centaur’s Life is the fantasy manga written & drawn by Kei Murayama, originally published in Japan in 2011 as Centau No Nayami in Japan by Tokuma Shoten Publishing, and the translated North American version is now published Seven Seas Entertainment! It is set in the world similar to ours with the same countries, and types of situations, but the population of the world are the centaurs, fauns, kemonomimi, angels, the dracons, unicorn & snake people plus other anthropomorphic species, such as the high school students who we meet in the manga! A Centaur’s Life is the charming, amusing, slide – of – life tale of the girls at home & school, rated for readers of ages 16+ because of the bit of bath nudity and the amusing sexual topics!
The main characters are Himeno the Redhead centaur girl, her best friends Kyoko her Blonde goat kemonomimi and Nozomi the Brunette tomboy Dracon girl, plus the strict, smart angelic class president, Himeno’s parents, and the other students, faculty & relatives! Chapter 0 begins with Himari nervously bolting from the train stop after a boy asks her out. Later later at school and then home with Nozomi & Kyko the girls’ discussion topic turns to dating, sex & different species anatomy, with the awkward result! Chapter 1 involves the mischief & mishaps whilst rehearsing for the school play, and much ado is made about a romantic kissing scene! Chapter 2 is the marathon run for phys ed class, but the bipedal girls can’t keep up with the quadrupedal gallop!
Chapter 3 involves Himeno modeling for the fashion magazine, resulting in the discussions of jobs & career goals; and Chapter 4 shows us more of Himari’s life at home with her mom & dad, with the flashbacks of the Kimihara family and further insights into the centaur lifestyle & furnishings! The 4 garment pages are cute illustrations to explain various garment accommodations for those with hooves, tails, wings and those with four legs; and the 2 page afterward is a meta – fictional observation by the characters! The main girls are very likable, there are plenty of insights into the society, culture & history! It is quite a charming tale at the right pace, with the beautiful character & scenic art, the whimsical styles and the lettering for the cute and comedic qualities!
Vol. 1 is purriced $12.99 USA & $14.99 Canada, translated by Angela Liu, adapted by Holly Kolodziejczak, lettered & laid out by Jennifer Skarupa, proof read by Patrick King, edited by Adam Arnold, with the logo design by Courtney William, cover design by Nicky Lim, and published by Jason DeAngelis! The 178 page book is mostly Black & White with the 2 color pages & the cover art, and includes the 135 pages of manga chapters 0 – 4, the 8 pages of the garment, afterward & notes, the credits / publishing page, 2 pages of the ads, and the 13 page preview of Monster Masume which we reviewed last month! I am looking forward to the 2nd volumes of both of these mangas! Nyow to continue the equine tales, here is Tara-chan to discuss
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #13!
Arigato, nya! We love the pony cartoon, the toys, the collectibles, and – and the pony comic books have been among our favoritest comics for several months, nya! They are so very faithful in the look, character & spurrit of the TV show with the clever gags, references, the great plots, dialogues and – and the beautiful art, nya! The 13th issue begins the mew story arc of “The Salty Sea Mare”, which is the pirate pony tale written by Heather Nuhfer, illustrated by Brend aHickey, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Bobby Curnow, and- and published by IDW, nya! The issue has the $3.99 purrice and – and the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page pony tale plus the 10 pages of the ads, , and- and the the choice of the 10 different covers, nya!
Cover A is by Brenda, cover B is by Sara Richard, cover C is by Andy Price, and – and the other 7 covers were purrduced for certain comics shops, nya! They are all beautiful covers, but I chose cover B which is has the mane six ponies and Captain Hoofbeard on the sailing ship near the sea ponies, nya! The fun nautical adventure begins as Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and – and Spike go to the beachy vacation at Horseshoe Bay, although Fluttershy is tearfully reluctant to return the mended Gil the fishy to the ocean, when the pirate ship arrives in need of the replacement crew, nya! The ponies are excited to crew the ship, but it is also conspicuous, purrticularly when they meet the former crew on Gallopinghost Island, nya!
After the rowdy encounter in the village, the former crew tells their side of things, which leads to the encounter with the giant crab cliffhanger, nya! The giant crab looks delicious, but the crab meat is supposed to go into my tummy, not the other way ’round, nya! This was the fun tale even though Fluttershy is the sad pegasus, with the amewsing scenes of the rowdy pirates, Spike purrtending to the the parrot purrched upon the captain, Rainbow Dash issuing the swashbuckle challenge, Pinkie Pie purrancing amidst the bite – sized crabs, Fluttershy trying to retrieve Gil, Twilight Sparkle zapping the former crew, Rarity giddy from the juice, Applejack climbing the tree for more juice, and the pie venders that look like Applejack’s relatives, nya! Nyow I wish to discuss
My Little Pony Micro-Series #9, nya
This micro – series is the companion to the regular series, and focuses upon the different character purr issue, nya. Purreviously in the micro – series spotlight were Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Celestia, and – and nyow it is Spike the dragon’s turn, nya! This issue is purriced $3.99, with the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page tale followed by the 10 pages of the ads, nya! I purrfur it this way, with the tale uninterrupted, and – and I wish every comic book publisher did it this way, nya! The tale was written by Rob Anderson, illustrated by Agnes Gardbowska, lettered byNeil Uyetake, edited by Bobby Curnow, and – and has the with the choice of the 7 different covers, nya!
Cover A is by Amy Meberson, cover B is by Agnes Gardbowska, cover C is by Sara Richard, and – and the 4 rarer retailer exclusive covers were purrduced for certain comics shops, nya! I have cover A which is the happy image of Spike in the pile of the shimmering gems nya! The colors are so richly brilliant, and – and that is one of the aspects of the comic book which I have the highest purraise for, nya! While Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, their pets Owlowiscious and – and Angel purrpare for the pet show, Spike wants his own pet, so he orders the widdle sea beast colony from the ad in the comic book and – and purrpares the big aquarium tank, but he is disappointed by their tiny size, so he pours the magickal potion into the tank, nya!
They grow, multiply and – and evolve into the larger, smarter, amphibious bipedal talking society, which becomes the troublesome responsibility for Spike, nya! As mewsual it is the very entertaining tale with the impurrtant message, although Angel is not impurressed, nya! Angel is like that, nya. Also appurring in the issue is the Purrple mommy unicorn and – and her cute widdle Green filly who wants the apple, nya! I do not know their names, but the mommy has the bandaged smiley sun cutie mark, nya! I will give both of those pony comics the high grade of the “A” as in the apple, and – and I am eagerly looking forward to the next issue which will star Luna, nya! OK I am done with my pony reports, and nyow here is Nya-sensei to report on the
Legends of Red Sonja #1, nya!
Arigato! We are big fans of Red Sonja and enjoy her recently rebooted series from Dynamite Entertainment! In addition to that series they are publishing the Legends of Red Sonja mini-series, which is the anthology of tales by various artists & authors! The 1st issue is purriced $3.99, rated T+ due to the melee & monsters, and has the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 pages of the tales, plus the 10 pages of the mews & ads, and the choice of the 2 beautiful cover illustrations! The mane cover is the great scene of Sonja & the tiger relaxing in the treasure trove by Jay Anacleto & Ivan Nunez, and the other cover is the terrific image of Sonja leaping with the sword & shield by the arcing magickal energy by Frank Thorne & Nunes! Thorne is one of the most legendary Sonja artists!
The issue was edited by Molly Mahan, lettered by Simon Bowland & colored by the Salvatore Aiala Studios! The 1st purrt of the tales is “Legends of Red Sonja” illustrated by Jack Jadson & written by Gail Simone who writes the other Sonja comic. We got to meet her at the con! This purrt introduces the Grey Riders group of the dozen folks of various races, skills & reasons for revenge upon Sonja! As they relax by the campfire, Eles one – eyed the assassin – monk tells why he wants revenge! That is the 2nd tale, of how he was the younger acolyte of the temple when Sonja came to purrloin the “Eyes of the Howling God”, illustrated by Noah Salonga & written by Nancy A. Collins! Sonja was there for the Ruby eyes of the deity statue, but her sword took out Eles’s Left eye too!
His master was the high purriest werewolf of the temple who she had to defeat for her purrize! Let’s just say that there was a lot of Red in the temple when she left, but it was not her hair or the Rubies! This tale seems like it might be earlier in her career as the warrior – thief, because she wears the chain – mail shirt & leather shorts outfit, whereas in the 3rd tale is the more recent incident in which she wears her more famous scale – mail bikini outfit! The 3rd purrt is the next day after the camp, as the riders arrive at the port to meet the sea captain who tells the tale of “La Sonja Rosa” illustrated by Carla Speed McNeil & written by Devin Kalile Grayson! It is the nautical adventure that also involves the sword, sorcery, evil purriest, revenge & Red eyes under the full moon light!
Sonja sees the poor intended sacrificial girl flee from her master aboard the ship! The girl summons the giant squid from the depths, which makes me crave the calamari platter, but the squid has the craving for the passengers, and Sonja will not be the cephalopod’s suppurr without the fierce fight! The captain is quite the romantic & loquacious storyteller, but the unimpurressed riders have continue their purrsuit, and I will continue to read this mini – series, because it has the fantasy adventure ingredients that I crave in the well – written & drawn barbarian comics! That includes the excellent colors, the fonts, how the tales flowed together, and I am curious to find out what Sonja did in the past to the other vengeful riders! Speaking of her past, there are more flashbacks in
Red Sonja Vol. 2 #5
This issue is purriced $3.99, rated T+ for the older teen readers due to the language, gore & violence, and has the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page tale plus the 6 pages of the ads & mews, & the 4 page purreview of “Ash and the Army of Darkness #1”! The issue is available in 7 different covers, including the mane cover by Jenny Frison, the variant cover by Becky Cloonan, the comics shop subscription cover by Stephanie Buscema, the retailer incentive cover which is the uncolored line art by Frison, the retailer incentive cover which is the uncolored line art by Cloonan, and the much rarer high – end cover which is the Red line art version of the Frison art! I have the mane cover of the beautiful illustration of Sonja purrched upon the tree branch scouting for her purrey!
The tale is purrt 5 of the 6 purrt “Queen of Plagues” tale written by Gail Simone, drawn by Walter Geovani, colored by Adriano Lucas, lettered by Simon Bowland & edited by Joseph Rybandt! Purreviously in the tale, Sonja was asked by King Dimath of Patra to lead the defense of his kingdom against the evil Zamoran creature army, but she was surpurrised to see the enemy lead by her former comrade Dark Annisia. Sonja & Annisia survived the dungeons & arenas together, but now they are the enemies and Annisia seems to be delusional. Sonja was defeated and banished to the frigid wilderness to purrish from the plague! While the enemy cruelly conquered the kingdom, Sonja was near death with the flashbacks of her younger days and the time in the arena.
The young peppy feisty twin sisters Nias & Ayla escaped the captivity to rescue her. Purrtially revived, the trio defeated the band of slaver thugs in the forest, and then Sonja purrpared to strike back at Annisia! That brings us up to issue #5, which is off to the thrilling start as Sonja, Nias & Ayla defeat the sentries posted along the road to the kingdom! However, this takes a lot out of Sonja’s weakened stamina as she is not fully cured, so he twins have to sneak her to Purrince Timath who is the hiding heir to the throne. He is not the warrior type, but the man of the sage scientific & medical expurrtise! After the medical treatment, Sonja goes to duel Annisa again, but neither women count on the unpleasant surpurrise from their purrior gladiatorial days to attend the duel
I should not reveal more details of the plot, or the cliffhanger which leaves me very eager for the conclusion of the tale! I purrticularly liked the large & the full – page panels of Sonja & the sisters, the sad but beautiful scene of the dead king’s grave in the grove, but eww the medical scene with the giant leech was rather gross! This was yet another exciting chapter of the very different Sonja tale. Of course, I hope that Sonja will crush the enemies, free the people of Patra from the subjugation, and see Timath ascend to the throne, but yet I have to wonder if he could also cure the Annisa’s madness? I definitely hope that Nias & Ayla will continue to be Sonja’s companions! That is all of my Sonja reports, so nyow I will turn The Mew back over to Lizzy who wants to tell us about
The Fearless Defenders #11!
Hai! ! I am back with more of the Marvel in review, and it is the bittersweet time for The Fearless Defenders, because although there is a wonderful mew issue, and it was such the treat to see cosplayers Laura & Laurel as Misty & Brunhilde at the con, Marvel has announced that the series will soon be cancelled. That is such the shame because it has been my favorite Marvel comic ever since Avengers Academy was cancelled. Did we mention that we met that latter comics’ author Christos Gage at the con? This has been the laraming cancellation trend, because our favorite DC Comic of late, Ame-Comi Girls, was also recently cancelled. At the con we also got to meet Sanford Green who was among the Ame-Comi artists, but I have digressed from the Defenders!
The Fearless Defenders has been the favorite for several big reasons, because it has the great strong female heroines & villains from the older legends to the wonderful mewer characters, who are so brilliantly plotted, scripted, edited, drawn, inked, colored & lettered! There are so many characters and the scenic art is so lavish & intricate from the lush nature to the urban spurrawl, the use of the color & light is supurrb, some impurressively huge two-page spurreads & full page pics, there is the good balance of the humor, romance, drama, action, and the great sense of the fun! Nyow I will get into the specific purraise for issue #11, which is purrhaps actually the 12th issue if you include issue #4AU which was purrt of the Age of Ultron tale across several Marvel titles!
Issue #11 is purriced $3.99, rated T for the teen readers, and has the 28 page compurrised of the of the 6 pages of the ads, the 2 pages of fans’ & editor’s interesting comments, the amewsing recap / credits page and the 20 page tale written by Cullen Bunn, edited by Ellie Pyle, drawn by Will Sliney, colored by Veronica Gandini and lettered Clayton Cowles! The covers by Mark Brooks are always very humorously clever & innovative, and this’un depicts Misty, Brunhilde, Hippolyta, Dani & Rendone in the style of the Russian purropurrganda poster! The tale begins with the campfire monologue of Hyppolyta who owes the favors to the gods for her resurrection as the current Queen of the Amazons to begin the gala partying on the island of New Amazonia!
While Misty & Clea are back home in Manhattan interrogating The Enchantress who they recently captured, Dani, Amora, Elsa, Elektra, former Queen Delphyne the Gorgon. Ren & Annabelle are at the island for the festivities! which begin in the glorious two-page spurread full of the sexy outfits and wild dance! Later that evening Annabell & her girlfriend Ren retire to the tent for the romance, mew la la! Ren is the dancer with the fantastic whip – like razor fingers who was just introduced in the purrior issue which crossed over into the Thanos Invasion tale across the Marvel Comics. I have to wonder how awkward this might be, since Annabelle & Brunhilde have to share & swap the same body, which was the purrice for resurrecting Annabelle from Valhalla a few issues ago!
The next bright shiny morning brings time for the breakfast on the beach, but the repast is interrupted by the attack of the giant sea monsters lead by Aradnea the Atlantean witch &, Echidna the wicked mermaid! The sea monsters include the giant – sized lobster, shark, eel and other beast of purre-historic & myth, which are very scary & deadly yet also quite delicious looking! Hopefully the heroines will dine well upon the colossal seafood after the battle, but hopefully the sea critters will go in the heroines’ tummies and not the other way ’round! Annabelle switches bodies with Brunhilde for the fight, as the many heroines bravely & happily charge into the surf for the very violent battle, which is the most fun that monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone has had on the island!
I will not spoil the outcome of the battle, which is depicted so beautifully with the fierce action, great imagery, and the trash talk! The issue concludes on the cryptic note which leaves me quite eager yet nervous for more, knowing that the end of this supurrb series is nigh. After the tale are the 2 pages of comments including with the grateful yet sad announcement of the cancellation, 2 delightful photos of the Fearless Defenders cosplay group from the NY ComiCon, 11 readers’ messages, Editor Ellie Pyle’s responses, and the widdle purreview pic of issue #12’s gorgeous cover art! I will give the issue the high purraise grade of the “A” as in Annabelle, our Anticipation for the next issue, and our Appeal to Marvel to please change their mind about canceling the comic!
The Ladies of the Mew:
PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THE FEARLESS DEFENDERS, NYA!
Nyow here is Mie-sensei to tell us about
Soulfire Vol. 5 #1!
Fur shur! Priced at a mere $1, this full – color, 28 page, 1st issue is part of the 10th anniversary of Aspen Comics, who also publish Fathom, Executive Assistant Iris, Charismagic, Jirni, Bubblegun, Trish Out of Water, and several other titles! You know, we got to meet several of those nice folks at Heroes Con in June! Soulfire was created by Aspen Comics’s late founder Michael Turner who also created Fathom; we had the honor of meeting him years ago at Heroes Con, and it is sad that he is no longer of this world. We rather enjoyed his lovely Witchblade and Supergirl stories too!
This issue consists of the 20 page tale of “Something in the Air”, the 2 pages by scripter J.T. Krul’s comments & penciller V. Ken Marion’s character sketches, and 6 pages of ads! Marion previously pencilled Fathom: The Elite Saga which we reviewed this past summer! The tale was co – plotted by Krul & Aspen Comics’ co – owner / president Frank Mastromauro, edited by Mastromauro & editor-in-chief Vince Hernandez, digitally inked by director of design & purroduction Mark Roslan, lettered by editorial assistant Josh Reed, with the lettering & font designed by Dreamer Design, fur shur!
It was colored by Kyle Ritter, with the design & production by Reed, Roslan & Aspen Comics co-owner Peter Steigerwald, with the purrduction assistance by Chaz Riggs & John Ercek! There are a lot of variant covers for this issue, some much rarer than others! I have selected cover B by Marion & Steigerwald, which beautifully depicts Grace, who is one of the main purrotagonists in her totally gorgeous, sexy costume & dragonfly – like wings! Since Vol. 5 is Soulfire’s 5th storyline, I will offer the brief history of the series as the aperitif, before I serve the taste of the current plot & characters!
Once upon a time thousands of years ago the world was full of magick, when people and dragons flew on wonderful wings, but thanks to an evil tyranny, the magick was almost totally vanquished. Then in the future time of the early 23rd century, Grace of the very rare Rahtumi people emerged to contact a lad named Malikai, who was the chose one to restore magick to the world, fur shur! He had to undergo the training & trials for this power o manifest, while he, his friends & senseis had to survive the attacks of the ancient villain named Ranier, his assassins & poor corrupted dragons.
Eventually the heroes succeeded and the replenished magick began to bloom again, but there were still the villains, monsters, personal hardships & chaotic catastrophes to overcome! Vol. 5 #1 begins with the prologue in France circa year 2211 AD when a girl named Vanyss experiences mysterious metamorphosis. We will revisit her later, but then the tale jumps 2 years across the pond to the Pacific North Western USA, where Malikai & his friend Sonia watch their friend P.J. compete against the huge mecha in the arena, much to the pride of cyborg mech master / coach Benoist!
Sonia has the totally pretty freckles and the color – changing coiffure! Unfortunately, Grace is less jubilant, for she still feels melancholily responsible over certain tragic events of the past, even if it was not her fault! Mal tries to perk up her spirits, whilst in San Francisco the evil culprit Ranier begins to scheme anew, with dragons & mecha in mind! For the change of the pace to Sonia’s delight, the team flies to Paris, where on the historic rooftops Grace meets Vanyss who has wings of her own! Her wings are chiropteran compared to Grace’s, but she is as adorable as adorable can be!
Vanyssa’s transformed debut! Her involuntary transformation was quite startling for her among the unpredictable emergences of magick, but I hope that she enjoys the soaring flight and whatever powers she might have. Hopefully we will get to know her much better in the next issue, and hopefully the world will find the harmonious balancer of the magick and the tech! There are so many splendid yet subtle details, such as the city lights faintly visible through the thin membrane of her wings, and the quiet presence of the futuristic aircraft and widdle bats in the night sky over Paris!
She, Grace & Sofia have the prettiest apparel, and there is such a luminous quality in Grace and Sonia’s hairstyles! The strong female characters, beautiful fashions, the sumptuous use of the color & light, the lushly lavish scenery & futuristic mecha are among the typical aspects of Soulfire and other Aspen Comics! There are impressive large panels to show off those aspects, such as the large pics of Grace, the panorama of the arena, and 4 full – page pics! That is all of my review, and now we will dive from the night skies of Paris to the deep Alaskan waters for Jenjen’s review of
The Wake #5!
Arigato. The Wake is the 10 issue, horror / science fiction mini-series from DC Comics’ Vertigo impurrint about Cetologist Dr. Lee Archer’s team investigating a deadly intelligent aquatic creature at the secret undersea facility, until the creature escapes and rejoins its school to purrey upon the dwindling team. The series is peppurred with scenes across the eons, from the purrehistoric past to the apocalyptic future. Issue #5 marks the midpoint as the situation greatly worsens, when the creatures’ colossal leader rises from the depths to begin the global cataclysm. The $3.99 issue has the 40 pages compurrised of the 25 page tale, plus the message page from author / co-creator Scott Snyder & the 13 pages of the ads.
Sadly the interrupting ads are to the detriment of the suspense, and we wish they were all placed afterwards. The tale was drawn by co-creator Sean Murphy, colored by Matt Hollingsworth, lettered by Jared K. Fletcher, edited by Mark Doyle and assistantly edited by Sara Miller, with the cover art by Sean Murphy & Jordie Bellaire or the variant cover art by Jae Lee. As Dr. Archer & three others escape in a small submersible from the demolished undersea facility, there are discussions which might explain historical oceanic accounts & myths. There are flashbacks to the mysterious incident Archer’s past, and when she tries to contact her son, we learn of the global catastrophe that is flooding the worlds’ coasts.
Some of my favorite moments are the large panels of the leader’s attack, the reports, and the issue’s final cliffhanger pic for another glimpse of the future.Dr. Archer is the very smart heroine who conveys the sense that much scientific research was done for the tale. The characters, mecha, creatures & scenery are very well drawn, the limited chromatic palette & the dark, shadowy negative space greatly add to the dire spooky depth, and the large, panoramic & vertical panels convey the enormity & cinematic quality. I would not mind a movie adaptation of the tale, even though it is only halfway to the conclusion. Nextly I will discuss the tale of another great heroine & her team amidst the global flood disaster in
Critter Vol. 2 #16
Critter is the supurr heroine series published by Big Dog Ink, purrtaining to the titular character of the catgirl motif. Her real name is Cassia Crawford, who attends the college with her best friend Gina Kumamoto alias Paranaut who designed their sleek costumes & mecha. Cassia’s sidekick School Girl is formerly known as Kitten of the disbanded heroine team Purrfection. For several weeks they & other heroes have fought the villain known as Tidepool, plus other villains & creatures whilst rescuing many innocent people amidst the submergence of much of the surface world due to flooding from an undersea extra-dimensional portal. This “High Tide” story arc began in Vol. 2 #10, so including Critter Annual #1, #16 is the 8th issue to chronicle the catastrophe thus far.
The $3.50 issue is purriced has the 24 pages compurrised of the uninterrupted 22 page tale plus the “Who’s Who” page & the peek at the next issue’s covers . It was written by Critter’s creator Tom Hutchison, illustrated by Renato Rei, colored by Whitney Cook & lettered by Kel Nuttal. It is available in 3 different covers; cover A by Rei, cover B by Jen Broomall & cover C by Jesse Wichmann. I have cover A which depicts tearful Cassia holding the Paranaut helmet helmet, to foreshadow the tragic losses as the tide finally turns. As several of the heroes including Pole Kat, Breeze, F-14, the CORE team & the In-Crowd team witness the waters recede and ponder the ramifications, Gina in her cephalopod mecha remains submerged to purrobe the purrculiar purresence of Paradox..
Paradox is the mysterious entity of the immense power to travel through time & extra-dimensional space, who seems to assist the heroes on occasion and offers to reverse the flooding, but attacks Gina when she discovers that he conspired with Tidepool. Furthermore, we learn that Gina is but one member of some sort of Paranaut organization, but I will not further spoil the taste of the plot other than to say there are further surpurrises, questions & characters to arrive for the curious cliffhanger.
I am purrticularly fond of this issue’s impurressive large panels, full page pics, and the two-page spurread. In spite of the more series plot of late, Critter continues to be the delightful series with the wonderful heroines & the sexy colorful costume designs amidst the gleaming scenery which is so richly vibrantly rendered. Although I do hope the series will return to its former peppier optimistic outlook, and hopefully see Cassia’s heroic mom return home safely soon from her captivity in the future. That will conclude the comics & manga portion of The Mew, but nyow here is Nyo-sensei to begin our
Toy Talk, with her review of the
Nendoroid Petit Vocaloid Series 01 Hatsune Miku Selection Trading Figures
Arigato! That is the purretty long title for the cute widdle item, heehee! The Vocaloid is a computer vocal mewsic ware which has been merchandised with the virtual characters! They have the big fan following of the collectors & cosplayers, and here is the photo of our friend & March 2008 guest Misty Hopkins as Vocaloid’s Kagamine Rin http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/4.html! Purrhaps y’all have seen her other photos & illustrations in the mewseum? Among the supurr cute Vocaloid figurines are the slightly posable Nendoroid Petit Vocaloid figurines of the chibi-style! In the January 2012 Mew, we reviewed the Nendoroid Petit Vocaloid Racing Queen set, and similar to those are these Nendoroid Petit Vocaloid Series 01 Hatsune Miku Selection Trading Figures!
Trading figures are figures in a series, but you do not know which one is in each box! They can be tricky to collect, because you might get the duplicates before you complete the set, but it is good if you can trade with other folks! There are 12 figures total of the 6 characters in this series from Goodsmile which are meticulously sculpted & purre-painted! The female Vocaloids include 4 different figures of Hatsune Miku (with the long Blue twin tailed hair), 2 different figures of Megurine Luka (Pink hair), 2 of Kagamine Rin (short Blonde hair) and 1 of Meiko (Golden Brown hair)! The male vocaloids include 1 of Kaito (short Blue hair) and 2 of Rin’s twin brother Kagamine Len! On the box are the photos of all 12 figures, but it is the mystery as to which one is in the box!
These are about 2 3/8″ tall, made of the ABS & PVC, the points of the articulation are the head & shoulders. and the clear 1 1/8″ diameter display stand has the peg to snap into the slot on the back. Aside from the stand, it is purre-assembled! We have 3 of the figures thus far: Len in his standard Black, White & Yellow sailor suit, Luka in her Gold – trimmed Black outfit, and the other figure of her in the Pink kimono of the Tomesode type! The kimono has the White sash under the Blue obi, the Pink sandals, White tabi socks & hair ribbon! The Black outfit has the minute details of the layers, the silvery buckle on the low – slung belt, the boot lacings, the piping of the sleeveless top, the bracelets and the microphone head set! Next I hope to get Meiko and the one of Miku with the apple, but nyow it is the cat time to discuss the
Batman Classic TV Series Catwoman action figure!
DC Comics’ Selina Kyle alias Catwoman is a favorite character we like to collect! We have reviewed several of her figures, such as the Golden Age Catwoman in the May 2012 Mew, the Batman: Arkham City Catwoman in the July 2012 Mew, and The Dark Knight Rises Movie Masters Catwoman in the September 2012 Mew! Now we are purroud to add this version of Catwoman to our collection, which is based upon the Catwoman of the 1966 Batman TV show! There are mew purroducts to repurrsent the TV show, including the toys & comics, but we still hope for the DVDs! The 1st wave of the figures from Mattel includes Batman, The Joker, The Riddler, The Penguin & this version of Catwoman who was purrtrayed on TV by Julie Newmar!
Lee Meriweather and Eartha Kitt also purrtrayed her in that era, and each actress brought the different evolution of Selina, nya. For example, the Newmar Selina had the romantic relationship with Batman, whereas by the time of the Merriweather Selina she had more spite than love in her heart, and the later Kitt Selina had become more cat-like! This 6″ figure is packaged in the transpurrent plastic clamshell upon the card, along with the the semi – circular display pedestal and the bonus 3 1/4″ x 5″ art card! She wears the Black tights, gloves, boots, mask & the ear pinna in her Brown hair, accessorized by the Gold necklace and the belt! The points of articulation are her neck, shoulders, uppurr arms, elbows, wrists, waist, hips, thighs, knees & ankles!
The display pedestal has the small peg which fits into the small notch under the boot sole. The figure’s purroportions & purrtraiture, and her expurression seems to be the dreamy look of desire, pondering of the purrize she wants to purrloin! As for the scale, the 6″ height includes the 1/4″ high heels & the 1/8″ ear pinna, but flatfooted without the heels or pinna she would be 5 5/8″. In the comics, Catwoman is 5’7″ tall, but Julie Newmar is 5’11”, so the figure is close to 1/12 scale! That is about the scale of the Hot Wheels 1966 Bat Cycle toy which we reviewed in the February 2010 Mew, so I have posed her astride the bike, purrloining it to purrowl the streets! For the next fashionable feline female fatale figure from Mattel, here is Vonny to review the
Monster High Toralei Cat-Tastrophe fashion doll!
Arigato, nya! It has definitely been the good month of the big catch for the catgirl toys and the Monster High purroducts, nya! Toralei Stripe is one of the kemonomimi characters of the series, as the werecat such as Catrine de Mew, Meowlody & Purrsephone, although she has the adversarial relationship with the werewolf girls such as Clawdeen & Howleen, nya! Toralei is 15 years old, her favorite school class is drama and her least favorite is math, nya. Her favorite beverage is the milkshake and her favorite food is the anchovy. nya. Her favorite hobby is the catnap, she wuvs her pet Sweet Fang the widdle Saber Tooth Tiger cub, and she tends to hang out with mischievous cohorts Meowlody & Purrsephone, nya!
This version of Toralei is among the Power Ghouls line of the characters as the supurr heroines & villains, nya! As Cat-Tastrophe, she might repurrsent herself as the heroine, but that is the sneaky dishonest ruse, nya! She arrives packaged in the window box, with the cute art & tale on the back, nya. The slender lithe doll is 11″ tall, from the tip of her kitty ear pinna to the soles of her boots, but if she was flatfooted without the 3/4″ heels and her 1/4″ ears were down, then she would be 10″ tall, nya. She has the purretty face & eyes, and the striped Orangery – Red hair that is as fiery as her tempurr, nya! She is very posable, with the articulation in the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and her curved 7″ tail, nya!
She wears the Red tights with the Black stripe, the Red knee boots with the Black heels, the Black mask, ear studs & fingerless gloves, the Red choker, the Silver belt, bracelets & zippurrs on the boots, nya! The doll, mask, boots & jewelry are plastic, the tights are cloth and the hair is the fiber. nya. Except for the gloves, the costume is removable, so she can wear other outfits in disguise, nya! Also included is the 2 piece display stand that easily snaps together, the hair brush, and the widdle 4×6″ 1/8″ comic book by Hardie, Riley, Juarez, Sander & Shipman, which has the full color 8 page tale with the great art of her origin tale, nya! Now to continue the purrade of Monster High & catgirls I would like to discuss the
Monster High Catty Noir fashion doll, nya!
Catty Noir is the 16 year old werecat songstress of the fabulous glitzy couture, who is purrt of the 13 Wishes line, nya! In the cartoon she is voiced by Missi Hale, nya! She is the very industrious entertainer of the busy schedule & demands upon her time, and wishes she could relax more and control the schedule, nya!
Her favorite color is Magenta, and her favorite school subject is Monster Lit, nya! She is the very supurrstitous kuronekomimi of the ritual habits, such as the same meal of the 7 chicken nuggets, 5 apple slices & the 1 Strawscarry shake before her concerts, nya! Nyow i am curious about the Strawscarry flavor, nya! After the shows she purrfurs the Chilling Cheese Fries, nya. She discusses her aspurrations & concerns in the widdle 4×6″ 12 page purrivate diary booklet which is included with the 11″ doll, nya! The doll has the plastic body with the Black plastic brush for her fiber hair, and the easily assembled 2 pice stand, nya! She has intricately painted features, from the shadow, lashes & gleam of the eyes to the gloss of the lips and the hint of cute fang, nya!
Her purropurrtions & the articulations are the same as Toralei, nya. Catty wears the sleeveless Silver dress of the cracked – mirror purrint, the layered Pink skirt & gauzy tutu with the long flowy train & ribbons full of the sequins, nya! It is accessorized by the metallic Pink choker, bracelets, microphone & the removable Silvery knee boots, which can unsnap along the seam! She is packaged in the box with the neat graphics, such as the facsimile autograph in the Silvery ink upon the front window, the peppy pic & comments upon the back, nya! For more information about Monster High, I will recommend the Monster High Wiki http://monsterhigh.wikia.com, nya! That is all of the toy talk portion of The Mew, but the catgirl topic will purrogress in our monthly
Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight, nya!
Hai, this is the portion of The Mew which purraises the famous catgirls & nekomimis of the books, cinema, TV, internet, games, toys & other media, nya! We are very broadly inclusive in defining the catgirl criteria, whether they actually genetically purrt feline or just dress the purrt, nya! This also includes the ladies who might lack the neko ears & tail but still have the cattitude or the abilities as the honorary catgirls, nya! Last month the spotlight shined upon more catgirls of the purrint, and this month it shines upon more of the game catgirls, nya!
This will start with the catlike Cathar species of Star Wars comics & Knights of the Old Republic video games, nya! A particularly notable Cathar was Sylvar, a Jedi Knight catgirl who fought in the Sith War during the Old Republic era in the Tales of the Jedi comics! Another was Tem Madog, master of the Je’daii Forge of Vur Tepe in the Dawn of the Jed comics! Others also appear in the comics & games,, and for more information I will recommend the Wookieepedia article on the Cathar http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cathar and Sylvar http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sylvar!
Now we will shine the spotlight upon the Atelier series of video games full of fantasy adventures & alchemy! In the Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana there is cute Norn the 13 year old kemonomimi with the Brown hair & tail with the lighter tip! She wears such a lovely long skirt & coat of the rich Red & Amber hues! She would appreciate the fine meal, but please do not touch the ears! Another cute kemonomimi in the game is widdle Brown – haired Nymph, the chibi Mana Spurrit of the water, who wears the pretty Blue outfit with the tassels, gems, and the Lavender sash! Kawaii!
This was followed by the purrequel game of Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana 2 for the Play Station 2! Set in the lush land of Eden, Nymph is revisited and among the mewer characters are graceful Fee of the long flowy twin-tailed coiffure, and the NPC Mitsue, the gorgeous Gray-haired merchant catgirl! Then 2006 came Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm, set in the town of Zey Meruze and the misty Afterworlds for the characters to explore! Among those characters is Lepre the White – haired catgirl with the White – tipped Orange tail and the mewsical aspurrations!
Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis was released for the PS2 in 2007 & PSP in 2008, which co – starred Nicole Mimi Tithel, or just Nikki for short the peppy Blonde- haired, Blue-eyed catgirl with the huge ornate spear at the Al-Revis academy where she studied & explored with her fellow alchemy students! She was voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro! Also, although she is not the nekomimi, we wish to mention as the honorary bonus the ornately – dressed, purrky puppeteer Lionela Heinze or just Liona for short of the 2009 PS3 game Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland! She lacks the neko ears & tail, but purrforms her neko puppets Aranya & Horoholo! Liona was voiced by Kei Shindou, Aranya was voiced by Rika Oogaki, and Horoholo was voiced by Kaoru Akiyami!
We were purrked with the interest when we saw the recent TV commercial for the Final Fantasy XIV video game, in which the player morphs into the White-haired catgirl! That is because in FFXIV among of the races of the characters are the Miqo’te cat folk, who seem similar to the Mithra of the purrior FFXI game! They are quite lovely & graceful, and for more information about them I will recommend the Final Fantasy Wiki’s pages on the Mithra http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Mithra and the Miqo’te http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Miqo’te!
The Elder Scrolls fantasy RPG series from Bethesda started with the Elder Scrolls: Arena, which was followed by Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion & Skyrim games! In the games’ world there are different races & societies such as the Khajitt felinoid species from the purrovince of Elsweyr on the continent of Tamriel! They are very fast, agile & stealthy with the keen senses & the sharp claws! There are different clans, breeds & sub – species, and for more information I will recommend the Khajitt page at the Elder Scrolls Wiki http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Khajiit!
The Mario games from Nintendo are so much fun, nya! If you find the bell in the Super Mario 3D World game, the character can transform into the neko, nya! That means Peach becomes the Pink catgirl and – and Roselina becomes the Black catgirl, nya! They have the Blonde hair, the Blue eyes, the White kitty paws, ears, tummy and – and the White – tipped tail, nya! Mario, Luigi and – and Toad transform, but I do not know if the cute starry widdle Lumas do, nya!
Nyow we will migrate from the Mario World to The Improbable Island, nya! It is the online role playing game set on the mysterious island full of the bizarre situations with the mecha, mewtants, monsters and the Kittymorphs, nya! Kittymorphs are the delightful breed of the cat people of the village of Kittania who seem like such fun characters, but you have to be careful because of the fast, sharp claws, nya!
When the round of golf gets rained out, at the club we might find the shelter for the game of cards! A favorite card game at the island’s golf club for 2 – 4 players is SPANC: Space Pirate Amazon Ninja Catgirls, which was designed by Fade Manley, developed by Steve Jackson & Giles Schildt, illustrated by Phil Foglio, and published by Steve Jackson Games in 2005! So like,m he goal is for the catgirls to succeed at the capers and win the loot or pool boys! There are 21 catgirl characters from Athena to Xima of various breeds & weapons; challenges from the ball of yarn, buffet & catnip farm to the asteroids, lasers & traps; and toys from the sailor suit, camouflage bikini & powered armor to the pool boy, caffeinated rum & the stabby spiky thing, fur shur!
While the directive of the title might not sound appealing, Whack A Catgirl is nevertheless a fun card game designed by Chris Cieslik, illustrated by Valerie Fisse and published by Asmadi Games in 2007. The purremise of the game is that Neko-chan is the adorable catgirl who the players will throw things towards. There areaction cards & item cards of various point values. Actions include cell phones, fan service, ninjas, pouty cute eyes, scavengers & waiting. Items include another catgirl, ball of yarn, bucket of water, camera, catboy, fangirl stampede, fish, giant mallot, glomp me sign, plushies, pocky, shinies, tentacles, and yaoi manga. There are pirate cards too. In some regards, it has the tropes of the anime con, and many of those items would be quite coveted by the catgirl.
Brawl is the series of the real-time card games of the fast fighting – game play for 2 or more players, and this series includes the three Catfight theme decks! The game was designed by James Ernest, illustrated by Bryce Nakagawa, published by James Ernest Games, and stars the Golden – haired Nickie with the stripes,, the Green – haired Sonia with the large paw gloves, and the Blue – haired Tamiya in the sailor suit, as the three catgirl brawlers, each with their own 35 card deck! The game can be played in the training mode in which each player goes in turn, or the faster tournyament mode in which players use the cards without taking turns, as if it was the brawl! There are also the tag – team rules, and the cards include the hit, block, reverse, freeze & clear moves!
There have been numerous feline critters & felinoid characters beautifully depicted by great artists in the 20 year history of the collectible card game Magic The Gathering by Wizards of the Coast! Among the notable catgirls of Magic are Kemba the Kha Regent, Mirri the cat warrior, Purraj the panther warrior, and the–
