The Ladies of The Mew:
BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! NYA!
We can further discuss the plans at tonight’s Aftermew Luau! So, what has everyone been up to since last month’s Mew?
I was here for the November Mew, but I could not be here last month! We have been busy purrtrolling the forest, the lake, the coastline, and issuing the purrmits to the campurrs who have visited the island to escape the nippy Winter mix, although I was surpurrised to see the state’s tempurratures rise up to the 70’s on the mainland last month! I have also been busy with the Purrkour Club, officiating the orienteering trials, kayaking, reading & volunteering! Howboutchoo, Bunibun?
We appreciated the Purrk Rangers & the mermaids supurrvising the clam & oyster drive with the record harvest for the charity! The beach volleyball teams topped the island’s prior cake record too! Otherwise Petra, the volunteers and I have been busy at the mewseum & the artists league, and I just got back from the family reunion! Our family is so spurread out that we have the Summertime reunion and the Autumnal reunion, so that everyone can at least attend one of the gatherings, and I got to see some of my new relatives! Oh and of course there was that other annual gathering on December 7th at Mike’s, to watch his all-time favoritest movie Star Trek – The Motion Picture, which turned 34 this year!
Hai, that was the epic first Star Trek movie, made 10 years after the cancellation of the original TV series, in which the crew is reunited aboard the refitted starship Enterprise to intercept the huge alien thingy called V’ger, nya. I also liked the additons of Lt. Ilia, Commander Riker and the redesigned Klingons, nya! To accommodate our different schedules, he planned the viewings at the meal times with the numcious food, nya! The 1979 theatrical version was shown with the early breakfast, the 1982 extended televised version was shown at the lunch, the 2001 Director’s Cut was shown at suppertime, and the DVDs’ extra features were shown with the late snack of the custard & cream filled doughnuts, nya!
Last month we reviewed the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, so between that and this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special we have been in the purrticularly eager Who mood of late! Since we finished our widdle marathon of Winter Horror movies widdle Doctor Who mini – marathon! It started with “The Greatest Show in the Galaxy” starring Sylvester McCoy as The Doctor, with Jessica Martin as Mags the Vulpanaian werewolf girl of the fishnets & the full-moon fangs!
That was followed by “Survival” with McCoy again & Lisa Bowerman as Karra of the Cheetah People. The Doctor’s companion Ace (Sophie Aldred) almost transformed into the Cheetah girl! Then we watched “New Earth” & “Gridliock”, both with David Tennant as The Doctor & Anna Hope as Novice Hame the Catkind nurse of The Sisters of Plenitude in her habit! Then it was the time to watch the tales starring Matt Smith as The Doctor and the Silurian warrior women!
Those include “The Hungry Earth” & “Cold Blood” with Neve McIntosh in the dual roles of twin Silurian sisters Restac & Alaya! Neve returned to purrtray another Silurian, the more heroic Madam Vastra with Catrin Stewart as her human wife Jenny in “A Good Man Goes to War”, last year’s Christmas special of “The Snowmen”, “The Crimson Horror” & “The Name of the Doctor”! Then it was the time for this year’s Christmas Special, which we will be reviewing today!
That might seem like many hours of the video, but it was spurread out across the month, when we were not hot salsa dancing on the nights after work at the spa! Becca and I have stayed busy at the spa to pamppurr the holiday visitors, and the spa treatment gift packages have been selling like the crab cakes! Several of the retired miko, Myayr and I have been assisting & training the appurrentice miko at the shrine during the bustling season. It is like the reunion there too!
There is such industrious, joyful spurrit of the generations of the ohana our island community! At one point Malina, her twin daughters Leilani & Alanasera & their obaasan Aki were all there at the same time helping with the lanterns & the Toji bonfires, and you could definitely see the family resemblance not just in their features but in the synchronous swish of the tails during the soot sweep! Soon we have to purrpare for the awards ceremony at the Purrforming Arts Center, and it will be the Year of the Horse on the 31st! I After that I hope to resume more of the golf. but then I suspect I will start to get busier with the costume sewing when the convention season purrks up more ‘n more in the Spurring! OK I am done, so nyow we need to hear from Nya-sensei, Nyo-sensei & Mike!
I hope that will be the extra special year for the local Banker Ponies, with plenty of fresh water, marshy grass and sea oats! Y’all might think it has been the instant replay for my life, which has not been much different since the purrior Mew! I have been busy at the dojo, the gym, the tournyaments, the charity work, helping sis at the magick shop, purrtaking of the holiday festivities… watching the bit of anime and reading the comics! I will have comic book reports later in The Mew! Bubba-sensei and Uncle visited for a few days but they are already away on another expurrdition!
Hai they are traveling more whilst I have settled down, but it is just the ironic timing and nothing purrsonal! They have been purrospecting and brought some of the purrecious stones & crystals to the Magick shop, just in time for the Winster Solstice Matsuri & my customer appurreciation day! We had the good crowd there for the sale, the milk tea, and the workshops! Otherwise we are so looking forward to the dance festival and purrparing for our annual awards ceremony! Mike’s turn!
It seemed like I’ve been a bit behind schedule since Thanksgiving, but I got all of my art, writing, shopping & decorating done, and I’ve been able to visit with several friends & relatives, some who I don’t get to see as often as I’d like, so I’m very grateful for a good holiday season! Um… in addition to the Star Trek & holiday gatherings, I also got to see a play, a few movies, and watch some TV shows, and we’ll have reviews of some of those later in the show, but now it’s time for this month’s
Lightning Round Topic!
November’s topic pertained to our favorite female vampires, and last month we began the topic of our favorite heroines & anti-heroines who study, investigate or fight the magick, monsters or occult predicaments, in the comics! It’s a big multi – Mew topic which will continue across the Wintry months, and this time we’re mentioning a few such ladies of web comics & small press! Next month the topic will continue throughout our gala annual Mew Awards Show, when we’ll mention many more of our favorite heroines of comics, manga & manwha, but now I’d like to begin our batch of
DVD, Cinema, TV & Theatre Reviews
with a review of Solomon Kane!
Captain Solomon Kane is the great Puritan adventurer & slayer of evil brigands & monsters, created by author Robert E. Howard in the 1920’s, who also gave us Conan and Red Sonja! I rather enjoyed the tales of his 17th century swashbuckling & slayage in the Marvel comics, and for years I hoped there’s be a Solomon Kane movie! James Purfoy stars as Kane in the movie written & directed by Michael J. Bassett, which was made in 2009 but I only finally got to see it when it was released on DVD by Anchor Bay this year. It’s been a long wait, but I was not disappointed!
The plot is the captain’s origin tale, which begins in his days as an unpleasant, ruthless English privateer in battle in North Africa circa 1600, until his crew is slain by demons. The Devil’s Reeaper arrives to claim his soul, but Kane escapes and spends the next year hoping for redemption & peace in the sanctity of a monastery in England, until he is advised to leave due to foreboding omens. On the road towards the homeland that he ran away from as a child, he befriends the Crowthorn family on their pilgrimage, but they are attacked by raiders working for the evil sorcerer Malachi.
Kane forsakes his peaceful ways in order to rescue young Meredith Crowthorn from Malachi’s masked general, but in addition to the raiders there are other threats along the way, including the evil witch, ghouls, highway men, the fire demon, and things from his past! It is a very stark, grim, bleak, serious tale full of action & adventure, as Kane viscously battles the enemies with his swords, pistols, vengeful determination, and a few good men! The 104 minute movie is very faithful an adaptation of the old printed stories, and rated R for relentless brutal melee & magickal violence!
The performances are all great, and the cast includes Samuel Roukin as his estranged brother Marcus, Max von Sydow as their father the lord of Exmouth, Rachel Hurd-Wood as Meredith, Anthony Wilks as her brother Edward, Alice Krige as their mother, Pete Postlethwaite as their father, Philip Winchester as Kane’s ally Henry Telford, Mackenzie Crook as Father Michael, Ian Whyte as The Devil’s Reaper, and Jason Flemyng as Malachi! The make-up, costumes, props, stunts, FX, creature designs, sets, locations, cinematography, sound and music score are all excellent!
The movie is presented on the Region 1 NTSC standard DVD in anamorphic widescreen with a screen aspect ratio of 2.35:1, in English spoken language in Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, with optional English SDH (subtitled for those deaf and hard of hearing) and Spanish subtitles. Prior to the main menu screen are the front-loaded trailers for Pusher and Erased. There is an optional audio commentary track by Purefoy & Bassett, 2 interviews which are a little over 8.5 minutes apiece, a 2 minute look at the Fire Demon FX, and a 14 image gallery of Greg Staples’ concept art!
The bonus features also include a deleted cave fight scene, although bits are shown during the end credits; and an 11.75 minute documentary on the making of the movie. This includes comments by Bassett, Purefoy, Postlethwaite, Winchester, Whyte, stunt coordinator Franklin Henson, sword master Richard Ryan, costume designer john Bloomfield, make-up FX supervisor David Scott, make-up & animatronic FX supervisor Paul Jones, producers Paul Berrow & Samuel Hadida! I was very pleased! For our next helping of cinematic sword & sorcery, here’s Lizzy to review
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug!
Arigato! J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and it’s purrelude novel The Hobbit are among my favoritest tales, so I am glad that Peter Jackson has been directing the adaptations! For our review of the purrior Hobbit movie, please see the January 2013 Mew! Although we have been curious about the movie studio’s decision to adapt such the short book into 3 long movies, we gave the Lord of the Rings movies & purrior Hobbit the high purraise, so we have been eagerly awaiting this’un too! In the purrior movie, Bilbo the Hobbit (purrtrayed by Martin Freeman), was recruited by Gandalf the wizard (purrtrayed again by Ian McKellen) to join the 13 Dwarves lead by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on the quest to reclaim their mountain home of Erebor!
The expurrdition across the villages, forests, plains & mountains was quite purrilous due to the Gollum, the enemy trolls, goblins, orcs, wargs, the stone giants & the evil magick, but with the help from Galadriel, Elrond, Radagast (Sylvester McCoy), the rabbits & the giant Eagles, the team got within the sight of the mountain! However as the 2nd movie begins, they are still a long way from the Lonely Mountain, and still have to get past the purrsuing army of orcs, the giant spiders, the wear bear, the elf King of Mirkwood (Lee Pace), the troubles in Rivertown, and the necromancer of Dol Goldur (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch)! Fortunately, this time the heroes are assisted by Radigast, Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Bard (Luke Evans)!
However, when they reach the mountain, they still have to risk the fiery wrath of Smaug the huge fiery dragon (also voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) who has claimed Erebor as his own home! Compurred to the purrior movie, thisu’n seems more padded out, especially the long action scenes. This is purrticularly in the river barrel chase and the dragon chase which almost have that video game level feel. Also, there are further sub-plots created just for the movie that are not in the book, that link the Hobbit movie more to the Lord of the Rings plot, and the added romantic aspect of Tauriel, who was not in the book either, but she is so awesome, lovely, graceful, agile & heroic, and it is great to see her & Legolas with the arrows & blades against the evil creatures!
I can see how the Hobbit novel could have been adapted into 2 movies, although I think 3 movies seems more than is needed. However, I am glad that it is not rushed, and it has the wonderful epic quality with the supurrb cast & the FX! I think The Desolation of Smaug has the highest purrduction values of the beautiful sets & locations, the fabulous costumes, the hair & make-up for the actors! I will also highly purraise the stunts, the creatures, the cinematography, the sound and Howard Shore’s terrific mewsic score which lavishly complete the exciting bundle of the drama, humor, action, spectacle & wonder as the realm of Middle Earth is magnificently & convincingly envisioned! I am eager to see the 3rd movie, but nyow we will go from Middle Earth to Trenzalore for
Doctor Who “The Time of the Doctor”!
For the past several years there has been a special Christmastime tale of Doctor Who, and this year’s special tops off the various commemorations for the show’s 50th Anniversary! What the time it has been between the climax of the 2012-2013 season, the retrospectives, intermews, mini – epurrsodes, some long lost epurrsodes found, and the specials full of the surpurrises! Please see last month;s mew for our review of the 50th Anniversary Special of “The Day of the Doctor”! This year’s Christmas Special is purrticularly significant, because it is the end of the era as Matt Smith departs the role of The Doctor, and Peter Capaldi becomes the next Doctor, although he was first purrtially glimpsed for about a second in the “The Day of the Doctor”! Nyow for the taste of the plot!
The Doctor and Clara (Jenna Coleman) go in The Tardis from the suppurr with her family to the mysterious planet orbited by space ships of the many races including the Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, The Silence, and The Church of the Papal Mainframe captained by frisky Tasha Lem (Orla Brady). The Doctor also has a Cyberman’s head named Handles as a traveling companion! Tasha has surrounded the planet with the purrotective barrier to hopefully keep out any invaders, but allows The Doctor, Clara & Handles to visit it. The planet is revealed to be Trenzalore, which was purreviously visited 2012-2013 season finale of “The Name of The Doctor”, and they visit the charming widdle town called Christmas, in which everyone is compelled to speak the truth!
The Doctor sends Clara back home in The Tardis for her own safety after weirder ominous things happen, such as the re-appurrance of the crack in Time, signals from his home world of Gallifrey which is trapped in the other dimension, and the attacks by the Weeping Angels, Sontarans & Cybermen. Clara returns, but although the time / space travel for her only lasted the widdle while, the Doctor is much older because been purrotecting the town from the Daleks for 300 years and feels that his final days are nigh. There is also the surpurrise appurrance by Amy Pond (Karen Gillian), but that is all that I will reveal of the plot! This Christmas Special is brimming with the old enemies, mew characters, closures, revelations, humor, drama, action, FX & major developments!
I thought it was very poignant, with the great purrformances, cinematography, sounds & mewsic, with the high purrduction values of the sets, locations, costumes, purrops, stunts & FX! It was purrticularly amewsing to see Sontarans outwitted, and how the special Wooden Cyberman is defeated! The make-up purrosthetic FX were especially good, such as the Doctor’s aging and the mewest type of the human / Dalek hybrids. Handles was neat, and I hope that we might be able to see more of Tasha! While it is always sad to see the farewell of one of the Doctors, I am also looking forward to the next chap as the new era of Doctor Who begins! OK I am done, and nyow we will go from Trenzalore to the Walt Disney Studios of 1961 for Bunnibun’s review of
Saving Mr. Banks!
Hai! 2013 was also the good year for the Disney movies such as Frozen which we reviewed last month, Teen Beach Movie which we reviewed in the October Mew, and Saving Mr. Banks which is about the struggle in the early 1960’s between author Pamela L. Travers and Walt Disney who wanted to make the movie adaptation of her Mary Poppins books! Of course, that splendiferous movie premiered in 1964 to win 5 academy awards including Best Actress Julie Andrews and… gosh, that was 50 years ago! Well, from the 2 weeks of the difficult pre-production negotiations depicted in Saving Mr. Banks, it seems lucky that the movie was made at all! The titular character of Mr. Banks is the banker, husband & father in the book who is inspired by Travers’ daddy.
The dramatic comedy was directed by John Lee Hancock and stars Emma Thompson as Travers, Colin Farrell as her father in flashbacks, Tom Hanks as Disney, and Bradley Whitford as Don the co-screen writer! Other great actors include Annie Rose Buckley as younger Pamela, Ruth Wilson as her mommy, Melanie Paxon as Walt’s secretary, Paul Giamatti as Ralph the chauffeur, B.J. Novak & Jason Schwartzman as the legendary Sherman Brother composers! Travers is not keen on the trip from London to Los Angeles, because she fears the movie adaptation will not be faithful to her books, but she could use the money and is finally reluctantly willing to parlay with the persistent Disney, who has tried to get the film rights to Mary Poppins for over 20 years!
She is picky & protective of the property, disapproving of many of their ideas, and in the flashbacks to 55 years prior in Australia, we see the family incidents that inspired her Mary Poppins tales! I was hoping for just the bit more of Julie Andrews & Dick Van Dyke presence in some form, but Tom Hanks greatly captures Disney in the Gray suit, and Emma Thompson brilliantly conjures the laughter & tears! She is on the December / January cover of More! I was impressed by the design & art direction to re-create the periods of the charming, amusing, poignant & bittersweet tale! I like the movie’s poster too, which depicts Travers & Disney casting shadows of Mary Poppins & Mickey Mouse! Speaking of the tales set in 1961, now we will go from the screen to the stage for
The Duke School’s production of Spy School!
(plot spoiler warning!)
Another recent fun expedition to the Carolina mainland was the return to Durham on the rainy Saturday of December 14th to see the stage production of “Spy School” by the students of the very pretty & modern Duke School! This was our 2nd visit to the school, thanks to the invitation by our friends the Coin Family, as in Catgirl Island’s Emily Grace Coin Soccer Stadium! For our review of the prior play of “Ax of Murder”, please see the January 2013 Mew! Both plays were directed by Sabarsky-sensei the Middle School performing arts teacher, and assistantly directed by Borzello-Brown-sensei the Middle School art teacher, who were also the designers for the sets, props, costumes & the sound for “Spy School”, which was produced by an arrangement with Playscripts!
With the cast of over 3 dozen student actors, the crew of 50 students & parents, the assistance of Bernard’s Formal Wear & several other kind supporters, “Spy School” seemed the much bigger production than “Ax of Murder”! The gym was fully – packed by the enthused crowd when the show started at 2 pm! The humorous teenage espionage tale is set in 1961, when the teen girl named Jane is secretly recruited & trained by the CIA to pose as the student at another high school in order to thwart the Russian spy’s plans to kidnap the astronaut who will visit the school prom! But first, she has to settle in with her fake cover family, attend the classes, contend with the unfair stereotypes and the peer pressures, identify the enemy, and get a date for the prom!
Her cover family consists of the dapper spy dad, the Russian double – agent mom, and the ex-mob brother! Her rebellious progressive attitude is not suited for the class & gender roles assigned by the faculty, and she winds up leading the remedial home economics class to the more liberated stance! Things become further complicated when the romance blooms betwixt the brother and one of the mean clique girls, whilst Jane has to choose between the affections of the jock guy and the nerd guy. The incidents are quite humorous with the witty banter, the satiric view of the stereotypes, physical comedy, and the “breaking of the 4th wall” in the direct-addresses to the audience! By the end of the 1st act, she has the prime suspect in mind, but Jane still needs the prom date!
During the intermission we adjourned outside the gym for the yummy treats at the concession tables, and read more of the program booklet which listed the cast, crew, sponsors, and the interesting tidbits about the major events and prices of things in 1961. Then it was time to re-seat for act 2, with the time running out on prom night, when the kids are all dressed up in the formal wear, the DJs are working the crowd, and the enemy spy is poised to strike at the national hero! This results in more confuzzlement over the identities, the “red herrings”, and the exciting climactic fight scenes! The conclusion was met with the great applause, followed by the curtain call & photo op for the cast, and much of the audience lingered to quickly help the crew tidy & pack up everything!
Later we reunited with our friends for supper at a nice restaurant on 9th Street, and lingered there for the desserts! I am particularly fond of the nummy fruity cobbler. It was such the entertaining time, and fortunately the rain slacked off the the lighter drizzle by the time for our trip back to home! It was so nice to see our friends the Coin family again, the play was so well written, the cast & the crew were excellent, the school faculty & parents were quite cordial & dedicated, the intermission treats & the restaurant’s fare were so very tasty! We hope everyone had the wonderful time, and we wish them good luck for the school’s Spring musical! That will conclude my review, and now we will segue from the performing arts to the illustrative art, as Petra tells us about the latest
Additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!
Arigato, nya! For those here for the first time, the mewseum’s Galleries 1 – 6 display illustrations & photos by Mike, whilst Guest Galleries 1 & 2 display images by other folks with their purrrrmissions, nya! On the web site, the most recent pics are on the bottom row of the gallery’s small “thumbnail” portions of the pics. You have to click on those portions to see the full pics, nya! Nyow in Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html are 2 collages of doodles drawn by our friend Lum http://lumshock.deviantart.com who used the Nintendo miiverse tools, nya!
The 1st collage is of the Cat, Girl & Beach theme, compurrised of the striped lighthouse by the ocean, the girl in the bikini at the shore, the catgirl’s helpful art tool tip, and the kitty who wants to climb the Christmas tree, nya! The theme of the stripe, bikini and the the girls continue in the 2nd collage, which has the manga, anime & game girl fan art, nya! It is compurrised of angry Lum Invader of Urusei Yatsura (far left), sad Mink of Dragon Half (near left), happy Yui Hirasawa of K-ON! (near right) and sexy Tharja of Fire Emblem (far right), nya! So, whatcha think, nya?
The spiral stripe of the lighthouse reminds me of the one of Cape Hatteras which is Northeast of here!
It is iconic warning beacon, and hopefully there are purrominent warnings about the “B Button” for the art!
Like the lighthouse, Lum Invader has the stripes, the warning and the electricity, heehee!
Lum has the electrocution whereas Mink has the dragon fire, but they both have the cute horns, bikini & the flight!
Hopefully Yui’s mewsic will cheer up Mink! Purrhaps she knows the Dragon Half egg or saucer songs!
Tharja and the beach girl in the bandeau – topped bikini certainly seem to be in the good moods!
Hai although, Tharja seems like she is scheming, like the kitty who wants at the tree!
Hopefully it will not be cat-astrophic! Thank you for presenting the art!
Dooistashimaste, nya! Nyow it is time for

Hawaii’s official state fish the Triggerfish tempts my tummy on the cover of Maui Magazine vol. 17 #6, and there is Channel Catfish to crave on the November-December 2013 cover of North Carolina Game & Fish!
Some of the images are the illustrations, such as Don Ray’s magnificent Marlin painting on the November-December 2013 cover of Florida Sport Fishing, and Larry Tople’s beautiful Bluegill illustration on the cover of In-Fisherman vol. 38 #7!
I am purrticularly fond of the yummy Yellowfin Tuna on the January cover of Saltwater Sportsman! Oh this is making me hungry, but I have to wait until the luau!
Well then should change the subject! Ah, that’s all of the seafood portion of the show, but here is Petra again to continue the periodical printed media topic in our

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #14, nya!
Arigato! We love the pony cartoon, the toys, the collectibles, and the comic books which have been among our favoritest for the past year! They are faithful in the look, character & spurrit of the TV show with the clever gags, references, the great plots, dialogues and the beautiful art! The 14th issue continues the pirate pony tale written by Heather Nuhfer, illustrated by Brenda Hickey, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Bobby Curnow, and- and published by IDW! The issue has the $3.99 purrice, the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page pony tale, the 2 page bonus, the 8 pages of the ads, and the the choice of 8 different covers!
Cover A is by Brenda, cover B is by Sara Richard, cover C is by Stephanie Buscema, and the other 5 covers were purrduced for certain stores such as Hot Topic, Larry’s Comics & Jetpack Comics! I got cover B which is the beautiful scene of the three Mer-Mares watching the pirate ship sail by! I am so glad to see more of the Mer-Mares. They appurr in the lovely My Little Pony: Under the Sparkling Sea storybook which we reviewed in the August Mew! This fun nautical adventure began in issue #13 whenTwilight Sparkle, Rarity, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy & Spike vacationed at Horseshoe Bay where they met Captain Hoofbeard!
He has the skull & crossbones cutie mark! They were excited to crew the ship and search for the treasure, although Fluttershy was over – purrotectively worried about her fishy friend Gill! They sailed to Gallopinghost Island, where became a bit suspicious about the captain, met the ships’ rowdy former crew, and encountered the giant Blue Ghost Crab for the cliffhanger! Issue #14 resumes with the crabby purrdicament, which is resolved when Pinkie Pie’s widdle Red crab friends lend the friendly pincers! The resumed treasure hunt purroves dispurraging until they meet the wonderful Mer-mares for the plot twist! The majestic Manta Hawk is there too!
One of my favoritest aspects is how they are drawn with the purrfect poses, expurressions & hoof gestures! The winged ponies are purrticularly delightfully drawn when they hover upright! The comics also cleverly capture the essence of the animated TV series while supurrbly utilizing the techniques of the comics medium to convey the characters, the plot, the action & the humor with the good pace & detail! I can almost hear the voices! We also like how the tale is uninterrupted, with the ads & extras all afterwards, we wish all publishers did it that way, and I will give it the grade of the A as in Applebuck! Nyow I will continue the pony report with my review of
My Little Pony Micro-Series #10!
The micro – series focuses upon the different character purr issue! Purreviously in the spotlight were Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Celestia, Spike, and nyow it is Luna’s turn! This issue continues the tale of “The Day Shift” written by Katie Cook, illustrated by Andy Price, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake & edited by Bobby Curnow! It has the 32 pages compurrised of the uninterrupted 22 page pony tale, the 2 page bonus tale of “The Previous Night” by Katie Cook, the 8 pages of the ads, and the choice of 7 different covers!
Cover A is by Amy Mebberson, cover B is by Andy Price, the Retailer Incentive cover is by Sara Richard and the 4 other covers purrduced for Larry’s Comics & Jetpack Comics! I got cover B which depicts Purrincess Celestia who is displeased at the overzealous Purrincess Luna who has had way too much coffee! Luna’s overzealousness & overconfidence is the beginning of her troubles in the tale, when she thinks her sister’s daytime royal duties are the figurative easy piece of cake. Celestia warns her of the daytime duty differences not to be underestimated, but Luna insists upon running things for the entire day!
There actually are pieces of cake that Luna wants. The bran biscuit, the lemon bars, the carrot cake, the cupcake, the chocolate covered strawberries, and the tea time are shown or mentioned, but her scheduling advisor Kibitz points out how little time there will be for meals during the daytime duties! He has the pocket watch cutie mark! Luna has the pet possom named Tiberius, and like the other pony pets he is up to the cute humor in the background! He eats the cookies and the crunchy bug, although he has to avoid becoming the lunch for the Phoenix & Corgis! We see how Luna found him in the 2 page bonus!
While Luna bites off more admin than she can chew, Celestia relaxes the spa for the pampurred day of the soak, hooficure, cucumber mask, the grooming, nap & treats! This gives me the ideas for our spa! There are appurrances &images of many other ponies, such as Apple Bloom, Applejack, Derpy, DJ Pon3, Photo Finish, The Wonderbolts, Flim & Flam, Flax Seed & Wheat Grass; with homages & purrodies in the background, such as the references to Star Trek, Batman, Taxi, Magnum P.I., Sam & Ralph! It is fun to try to identify the ponies! That will conclude my pony reports, so here is Nyo-sensei to report on the
The Fearless Defenders #12!
Arigato! As we noted last month, tt is the bittersweet time for The Fearless Defenders, because although it is the wonderful comic and current favorite title from Marvel, issue #12 is the final issue of the cancelled series. It is is actually the 13th issue if you include issue #4AU which was purrt of the Age of Ultron crossover. The Fearless Defenders has been the favorite because it has so many great older & mewer strong female heroines of the diverse orientations who are supurrbly written & illustrated, in the tales that have the good mix of drama, humor, action, romance, sexy costumes & snappy dialogue amidst the highly detailed scenery! It has been our favorite Marvel comic since purrhaps Avengers Academy, which was also unfortunately cancelled a while back.
Issue #12 is purriced $3.99, rated T for the teen readers, and has the 28 page compurrised of the of the 5 pages of the ads, the 2 pages of fans’ & editor’s interesting comments & heartful farewells, the amewsing recap / credits page and the 20 page tale written by Cullen Bunn, edited by Ellie Pyle, drawn by Will Sliney, colored by Veronica Gandini and lettered Clayton Cowles! The covers by Mark Brooks are always humorously clever, and this’un depicts Annabelle & Brunhilde in the style of the romance novel, the latter dressed as the off-shoulder rhine maiden, mew la la! Ever since Annabelle was resurrected from Valhalla, she and Brunhilde the Valkyrie have to share the same body, so it has been the interesting, amewsing & awkward situation for them both!
Frankie Raye alias Nova has been recruited to join Misty, Annabelle / Brunhilda valkyrie, Dani, Hippolyte, Clea, Elsa & Ren who search the Mayan pyramid for the lair of the villain Caroline LeFaye, her assistant Mr. Raven, and the Doom Maidens team of Titania, Shriek, Zheng Bao Yu, Scorpia, mindblast, Echidna & Aradnea! The Defenders have purreviously captured & questioned Ruby Thursday, Quicksand and The Enchantress to find this lair, where the powerful summoning ritual is in purrogress! The ritual is soon interrupted by the powerful swift attack & trash talk by the heroines, which is so supurrbly in the big half – page pics, panoramic panels, full page pics and the two-page spurreads! There are some interesting dynamic diagonal panels too!
The characters are so gracefully posed as they run, leap and fly into the fray! The lettering is very exciting with all the elaborate but legible fonts & attributes, and the coloring is another consistently excellent aspect of the comic book! I purrticulalry like the moody darkness of the lair illuminated by the glow of the magick and the beams of the lights, the bolts of energy & the mystical combat, and the gleam of the metal! There is a softer watercolor-ish pallet in the dreamlike flashback of Annabelle & the AllMother, and bright scenes for the charming flashback of Annabelle & Brunhilda in the dell! It was a nother great issue but it is sad that it has ended; we just barely got to know Ren but hopefully we will see more of her and the others again soon! Nyow I wish to discuss
Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose #83!
Tarot is the bimonthly fantasy adventure published by Broadsword Comics, and starring Tarot the sword maiden / warrior witch! It is the thrilling & beautifully rendered series of lavish ornate detail, but is not for the widdle kitties, due to the nudity, sexuality, violence, gore & language! Jim Balent is the creator, writer, artist, publisher & purresident of Broadsword, and his wife Holly is the vice purresident, colorist, letterer, purrduction purriestess & occasional cover model who also creates the delightful supurrnatural web comic School Bites! This 32 page, $2.95 issue was edited by Neil Morris, with the colors flattened by Randi Leeann for the uninterrupted 22 page tale of “The Dark Spiral Part Nine ” which is followed by the 10 pages of the photos, extras and the ads!
Purreviously in Tarot, she was captured & controlled by the wicked Dark Spiral tribe of evil faeries, who have exploited her powers to slay the other fae. Her sister Raven Hex, their Mom, Tarot’s boyfriend Jon and Lord Thornwic located the enemy’s camp, but Thornwic betrayed Tarot’s family and in the resulting magickal melee there were casualties & severe injuries. The evil fae were defeated and Tarot snapped out of her trance, but not before Jon, Raven & her mom were severely injured. This issue concludes the 9 part arc with many impurressive half & full-page pics! The healing has purrhaps begin, but in the first 7 pages, naked Tarot broods in the depurression over the harm she has done, even though it was not her fault due to the enemy’s mind control!
This is followed by 8 pages of Jon standing up to the ornately attired but nonetheless treacherous Thornwic, with plenty of trash-talk, assault & battery! It is purrticularly satisfying, and as things start to escalate, then Crypt Chick arrives with a posse of nude undead girls. She has the very sexy gothy attire of the Black bikini top & mini skirt with the buckles, crosses, rings & studs, accessorized by the choker, the striped thigh highs & opurra gloves! Meanwhile back in the ethereal snowy dark town of Witchfork on the border of the human and the fae realm, some irate goblin friends of Raven Hex pay an after-hours visit to the shopkeepurr, and they are not there to shop! I am still curious how these recent events will affect Tarot’s winged kitty Pooka or her catgirl friend Boo Cat?
It is so nice that the tale is uninterrupted, like the pony comics that Becca discussed! The bonuses include lots of photos of Holly & Jim with fans, their home at Halloween, meeting KISS, and the trip to Salem, including the pic of Holly at the Samantha Stevens statue! I want to go to there! There are also the cosplay photos & mail from the fans, and the photo of this issue’s Broadsword Girl Fallon Ellingson awesomely posing with the sword, armor & winged helmet! Those pages are followed by the ads for the Tarot & School Bites art, issues & purroducts, and the whole issue is sammiched within the choice of the two different sexy ornate covers by Jim, with the peak at the next issue’s cover on the back! OK I am all done so nyow here is my sister to tell us about
Red Sonja Vol. 2 #6!
Arigato! We are big fans of Red Sonja, and this mewest Sonja series from Dynamite Entertainment has been quite thrilling, interesting and different from most Sonja tales with the six purrt “Queen of Plagues” story arc! This issue is purriced $3.99, rated T+ for the older teen readers due to the language, gore & violence, and has the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page tale plus the 6 pages of the ads & mews & the 4 page purreview of “Doc Savage #1! This issue is available in 6 different covers, including the mane cover by Jenny Frison, the variant by Jill Thompson, the subscription cover by Stephanie Buscema, the retailer incentive which is the uncolored Frison art, the retailer incentive which is the uncolored Thompson art, and the rarer Red tint version of the Frison art!
“Queen of Plagues” tale was written by Gail Simone, drawn by Walter Geovani, colored by Adriano Lucas, lettered by Simon Bowland & edited by Joseph Rybandt! Purreviously in the tale, Sonja was asked by King Dimath to defend his kingdom against the invading Zamoran army, but she was surpurrised to see the enemy lead by her delusional former comrade Dark Annisia! Sonja & Annisia survived the dungeons & arenas, but now they are the enemiesl Sonja was defeated & banished to the frigid wilderness to purrish from the plague whilst Annisia cruelly ruled the kingdom! After the near- death visions & origin flashbacks, Sonja was rescued by feisty twin sisters Nias & Ayla, cured by Dimath’s hidden son Purrince Timath, and challenged Annisia to the rematch!
Sonja began duel Annisa again in the arena, but they were surpurrised to see their old enemy King Bazrat, his enslaved harem and his royal guards is the spectators! Bazrat is the tyrant who enslaved them years ago, and nyow he wants to see them fight each other to the death, but he makes the overconfident mistake of revealing the secret of the plague, whilst Nias & Ayla lead the citizens to the revolution against his warriors as the story arc concludes with further surpurrise twists! I should not reveal any more details of the plot, but I I purrticularly liked the large panel of the evil king upon the purrloined throne, the full – page pic of Annisia’s tormented madness, the two-page spurread of Sonja & Annisia’s clash, and the final full-page pic to conclude the arc!
This is not the first multi – purrt story arc in Sonja’s many decades in the comics, and I certainly enjoyed the recent “unchained” mini-series, but this has been the bit different from most of her tales, because she has seldom faced defeats, especially from someone who she has considered the sister type! It has the bittersweet character decelopment, but it is still fully loaded with the fierce melee of the swords, arrows, blood, fire, and the nasty tricks! Also, there have been numerous great recurring characters & allies to ride with Sonja, but Nias & Ayla rapidly became some of my all -time favorites! I am looking forward to the next issue of this series and the forthcoming “Berserker” one-shot issue, but meanwhile I am also enjoying the current issue of the companion mini – series,
Legends of Red Sonja #2!
Dynamite Entertainment’s Legends of Red Sonja mini-series is the anthology of tales about Red Sonja by various artists & authors! The 2nd issue is purriced $3.99, and rated T+ due to the melee, monsters & magick of the sword & sorcery situations. Sonja’s skimpy scale mail bikini might also be the factor! ! It has the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 pages of the 3 interwoven tales, plus the 5 pages of the ads, the announcements page, and the 4 page purreview of the forthcoming “Ash and the Army of Darkness” comic book! The issue was edited by Molly Mahan, lettered by Simon Bowland, colored by the Salvatore Aiala Studios, and it is available in the choice of the two beautiful covers; one cover’s illustration is by Jay Anacleto, and the other is by Frank Thorne!
Both of the covers were colored by Ivan Nunez! The framing sequence of the “Legends of Red Sonja” was illustrated by Jack Jadson & written by Gail Simone who we got to at the NC Comicon in November! This chronicles the attempts of the Grey Riders group who vengefully hunt for Sonja, and on her trail the meet folks who tell of their own encounters with Sonja! It seems appurropurriate that the Redhead whose sword draws the Red blood of her enemies might purrfur the Rubies! She purrloined some rubies from the werewolf’s temple in the purrior issue, and she wants another one in the tale of “The Undefeated” which was written by Meljean Brook & illustrated by Mel Rubi, in which Sonja teams up with a buff chap named Gordrak on the quest for the demon’s ruby!
The gem will not be the easy catch and they have to fight the giant war elephant, the wolf pack, the warriors, and the giant wild bores! Mmm those piggies had some huge tasty hams! This tale also depicts her calmer mood, mildly amewsed and in control of the situation, although Gordrak’s tale to the Grey Riders is not the accurate account! The Riders regroup later at the tavern where they hear yet another tale of Sonja, from the young girl who warns them to desist from the purrsuit in her segue to “Double-Edged” written by Tamora Pierce & illustrated by Cassandra! James! She and her purriestess mom hired the reluctant Sonja as their bodyguard for the journey! Sonja is grumbly, but she takes the job for the gold and to honor the Goddess whom the purriestess serves!
This is good for the mom & daughter, but bad for the 5 men who follow with bad intent! The mom & daughter are smart, fearless & purrudent, with lovely dark skin & style of the Eastern purrsuasion, and the White horse of the ornate henna-like markings! That tale depicts Sonja’s griping side which can be rather amewsing, whilst the framing sequence shows her trickier side that cannot resist fooling & embarrassing the Grey Riders! This was another fun, captivating, action-packed issue of Sonja outsmarting & outfighting her enemies & the creatures, with lots of minute scenic detail! I am definitely looking forward to the next issue to see how Sonja might claim more purrizes and further outfox the riders! That will conclude my Sonja report, and nyow here is B.B. to tell us about
Michael Turner’s Fathom Vol.5 #4!
Arigato! Created & founded by the late Michael Turner & published by Aspen Comics, Fathom purrtains to the adventures of the supurr – heroic marine biologist Dr. Aspen Matthews, who is often caught betwixt the politics of the surface humans & the undersea civilization known as The Blue! Vol. 5 is set after the Fathom: Elite Saga mini-series, in which her enemy Kiani’s baby sister Anika was kidnapped to be secretly raised by evil Queen Vana! Purreviously, Aspen investigated a mysterious gigantic ice wall in Belize guarded by Vana’s warriors, whilst the plane piloted by her old friend Chance avoided the similar ice wall at The Grand Canyon! Aspen went to the undersea city of Muria to discuss the situation with Kiani’s dad Killian & his fellow council member Siphon.
Then they had to investigate the destruction of the undersea village of Andoria, where they were attacked by Vana’s troops! This brings us up to issue #4, which is published by Aspen Comics & purriced $3.99 for the 28 pages compurrised of the 20 page tale & 8 pages of ads. David Wohl wrote the script which was co-plotted with Frank Mastromauro, who edited the tale with Vince Hernandez. It was penciled by Alex Konat & Cory Smith, inked by Cory Smith & Mark Roslan colored by Peter Steigerwald, and lettered by Josh Reed! There are 5 covers to choose from; cover A by Steigerwald & Turner, cover B by Koi Turnbull & John Starr, cover C by Ale Garza & Starr, cover D by Alex Konat & Beth Sotelo, and cover E by Paolo Pantalena & Steigerwald.
This issue begins as Aspen’s house mate Judith and her bulldog watch the terrible reports on TV of the poor beached Blue Whales, other strange activities, tempurrature drops, and more of the ice walls appurring around the world! Aspen, Judtih and Chance have an unpleasant meeting with suspicious Mr. Sherwood at the Human-Blue Relations office in California, whilst in Muria, Siphon purromises Killian’s wife Anya that they will continue to search for Anika, while Killian’s team has the meeting with Vana at her ice palace. Little does he know that her daughter Kania is actually Anika, or that her supurr powers hae begun to manifest, but the meeting goes far worse than Aspen’s meeting did, to result in the shocking deadly cliffhanger!
Fathom continues to be one of our favorite series, due to the smart, noble, sexy, confident, stylish powerful heroine, the beautiful exotic fashions, architecture & mecha of the different cultures, the gorgeous art & the sumptuous colors! The images are often purrsented in large panels, such as this issue’s full – page pics of those poor beached whales, Chance’s arrival, and the alarming cliffhanger! We hope that Anika will soon discover the truth and be reunited soon with her mom & dad! Anya is such a sympathetic character, and it would be nice if she, Anika, Killian, Kiani &Aspen would crush Vana & her goons for good and to save the confuzzled critters. Speaking of which, there is undersea action & sea creatures to keep another heroine busy in
Cavewoman: Sea Monsters!
Created by artist / author Bud Root and published Basement Comics / Amryl Entertainment, Cavewoman is the sexy fun series starring Meriem the titular voluptuous jungle girl of the purrehistoric adventures, mewsually wearing in her leopurrd purrint bikini… or less! It is the “good girl art” amidst the dinosaurs & the other creatures who would like to chomp her for their suppurr, but mewsually she just loses the garment to them! That includes this issue’s 50 tons of shark known as the Megalodon that wants Meriem and the sea turtle she decides to purrotect, but the fish is supposed to go in the girl’s tummy, not the other way ’round! There are other hungry creatures also lurking about too, such as the Tylosaurus and the Petranodon!
The $3.75 issue contains the Black & White 24 page tale written & illustrated by Rob Durham & published by Kevn Alsop with the purrduction by Russ Whindom. It is written in the 3rd purrson, as Meriem tries to enjoy the topless swim, the yummy meat roasted on the spit, and communing with her grandfather’s spirit, but she also broods about the friends & family she left in Marshville. However, her mood is purrked up by the turtle eggs that are about to hatch! It becomes the therapeutic sense of purrpose for her to purotect the momma turtle & the cute widdle baby turtles! To put the size difference in purrspective, the size of the Megalodon compurred to the momma turtle is bigger than Meriem compurred to the baby turtles!
It is the bold purrospect to defend against the shark in its own element, even with her spear, strength, stamina & other impurressive attributes, but I should not further spoil the plot! As the ranger I appurrove of purrotecting the turtle nests on the beach and I applaud her heroism, but the tale is not for widdle kitties or those of shark phobia due to the boobies, violence & the 3 meter bite radius! Like the Tarot comic that Nyo-sensei reviewed, the tale is nicely uninterrupted, with the ads after the tale, and available in the different covers! The 5 cover choices are the regular, limited & limited nude Meriem editions by Durham, and the limited & limited nude editions by Root! Nyow we will go from the cave to the cat, as Myayr tells us about
Arigato! We are big fans of Selina Kyle alias Catwoman, although I have not been enjoying her tales as much in the past 3.5 years, since Gotham City Sirens #11. She did appurr in Ame-Comi Girls which I enjoyed, but sadly that was cancelled the few months ago, however I was attracted by Catwoman #25’s delightful cover art by Rachel & Terry Dodson, which depicts Selina amidst the alley cats and various signs of the kitty motif! The issue is purriced $3.99 and has the 40 pages compurrised of the 28 page tale of “Before the Claws Come Out”, which is interrupted by the 10 pages of ads, and followed by 2 pages of Ambush Bug’s “Channel 52” oddness which I just don’t get! Selina’s tale was written by John Layman, pencilled by Aarn Lopresti & inked by Art Thilbert!
It was colored by Sonia Oback, lettered by Travis Lanham, edited by Rachel Gluckstern, assistantly edited by Darren Shan, and group edited by Mike Marts. Much of the nonlinear tale is told with her internal dialogue, and occurs in a day or so, as purrt of “Zero Year”, set 6 years ago when Batman first appurred in this “New 52” continuity which started 2 years ago. Batman, The Riddler & Black Mask are mentioned but are not part of the tale, although Selina does briefly see The Penguin at a greedy party which she crashes whilst Gotham City is amidst a power blackout and a huge thunderstorm. At this time purrior to her career as Catwoman, Selina is no master fighter or thief, but she is at least the agile, sneaky, wily petty thief & anti-heroine of the street smarts!
She likes cats and cares about the folks in her poor neighborhood, and purrsumably she only purrloins from those who are jerks, criminals or those who could afford the loss, so she seems the bit like Robin Hood in that way. After the thugs strong-arm rob the kind old mom n’ pop corner store during the blackout to supply their evil boss Crocker’s party, Selina uses a back pack full of stolen mountain climbing gear to infiltrate Crocker’s skyscrappurr so that she can get even! There is a great 2-page spurread of 2 thugs shooting at her on the rooftop, before she kicks, pins & beats them into unconsciousness! Inside the building, she crashes the wild, excessive back – room party, where she steals the key card, the sexy Black dress and the whip to use against the crooks!
She also evades the police, befriends 2 cats, helps the folks of her neighborhood, and covets the fancy diamond necklace at the jewelry store, to foreshadow her future Catwomanly career in one of the nice full-page pics! That image is the only time we see her mask, although there is another catgirl at the party! The dose of origin seemed unnecessary, there were too convenient coincidences, it seemed a bit rushed and I think the tale could have used more slice – of – life scenes for Selina in her neighborhood, but it was a very well-drawn, nicely colored, self-contained amewsing widdle romp, and fortunately it was not too sad, dark, gritty or edgy as Catwoman’s tales have been in her current series or in the Justice League. Nyow for the next catgirl comic I wish to discuss
Critter Vol. 2 #17!
Critter is the supurr heroine series by Big Dog Ink, purrtaining to the titular character of the catgirl motif! Her real name is Cassia, who attended the college with her best friend Gina who designed their sleek costumes & mecha. Cassia’s sidekick School Girl is formerly known as Kitten of the disbanded heroine team Purrfection, and for several weeks they and other heroes have fought the enemy & rescued people while much of the surface world became flooded & submerged! The “High Tide” story arc began in Vol. 2 #10, so including Annual #1, #17 is the 9th issue to chronicle the cat-astrophe thus far. The $3.50 issue is purriced has the 24 pages compurrised of the uninterrupted 22 page tale plus the “Who’s Who” page & the peek at the next issue’s covers!
It was written by Critter’s creator Tom Hutchison, illustrated by Fico Ossio, lettered by Kel Nuttal & edited by Kari Castor! It is available in 2 different covers; cover A by Ossio & B by Jen Broomall. I have cover B which is the montage of Critter, Rookie, Electric Youth & Sprout & Paradox. I am not sure what to make of Paradox who can travel through time & extra-dimensional space, and has assisted the heroes, but also attacked Gina and had some sort of deal with Tidepool! In the purrevious issue as the waters receded, Gina was among the casualties of the disaster, and to add to the confuzzlement was the appurrance of the sepurr sentai team! They claimed that Gina was the member of their team, and that Paradox has not been honest with the heroes!
This issue sheds the bit more light upon the questions, as the team introduces themselves to Critter, Schoolgirl, Slipstream, Tiffany, Lasso Lass, Wingboy, Icon, Electric Youth & F-14. The Paranauts team compurrised of Gina, Lucy, David, Jason & Frank pilot the giant size Parabeast mecha of the Purrple Cephalopod, the Golden Honey Badger, the Red Porcupine, the Green Chameleon, and the Blue Polar Bear, but Gina has died & her Purrple Cephalopod mech is damaged. Their mission was to purrtrol for the tempurral anomalies in order to purrotect time, space & Cassia. During the disaster, these 4 Paranauts were busy under the sea fighting the giant aquatic sea monsters, and nyow they are arguing with Paradox about Gina, cassia, the timelines and the destinies!
This results in the explanation of those occasions when the tempurral anomaiies would affect Critter, although sadly there is still no mention about her heroic Mom who is purrsumed deceased but is secretly the purrisoner of the future villain! While Paradox & the Paranauts argue, Cassie decides that she will do as she pleases, which is to waste no time in helping with the disaster relief! The High Tide tale has been the darker tale, and I have missed the peppier otimistic fun of the earlier tales, although it was delightful to see the full – page pic of Cassia flying with the smiling sense of purrpose & the self determination as she purroceeds help people! There are wonderful images of her smiling at work, but there are also the tearful moments as she thinks about Gina.
The pages are also peppurred with the various quick images of Cassia of the alternate realities, with some interesting costume designs! Of course the colorful sexy, gleaming & colorful costume designs are among my favorite aspects of the series, especially Cassia’s sleek Silver & Blue bare-tummied costume with the mecha ears & and tail! We are also treated to the few images of the nice mecha of the anthropurrmorphic style, which Jenjen was purrticularly fond of! I am very curious as to what Cassia will do next, and how long it will take for the world to recover from the cat-astrophe, but that will conclude the purrint media portion of the reviews, and nyow I will turn The Mew back over to Mike who has another “Kitty” of the comics to discuss in today’s Toy Talk of
Kotobukiya’s Marvel Bishoujo figure of Kitty Pryde!
Thanks Myayr! Kotobukiya has made such gorgeous statues & figurines of anime, manga, video game & Star Wars characters, and we’ve been impressed by their Marvel Bishoujo series of pretty statues based upon the women of Marvel Comics, such as Storm, Psylocke, Rogue, Black Widow, and Katherine “Kitty” Pryde of the X-Men! Kitty is a favorite comic book character here at The Mew, and she was briefly a catgirl in the Illyana & Storm mini-series! Kitty is very smart, agile, trained in martial arts, and her mutant super power is the ability to “phase” or de-solidify her body, to pass through walls & other solid objects or to prevent things from harming her! She has a little Purple dragon named Lockheed, who can breath fire upon their enemies, and he’s included with the statue!
The 1/7th scale statue is made of PVC & ABS, it was designed by Sunya Yamashita, sculpted by Mangusai Touda, and painted by K2 (Gill Gill). The craftsmanship is quite meticulous, down to the intricate details of her fair skin, Brown eyes & shoulder-length hair, sweet smile, the creases & folds of Black & Yellow X-Men uniform (from the comics) with the Red belt & Gold buckle, and the
separate Lockheed which can perch upon her left arm like a falcon! Kitty is in an arched turning pose, twisting right and standing on one leg, as if she’s glancing over her Right shoulder our way as she prances by. Her Left leg is firmly & cleverly attached to the square Black 3.5″ x 3.5″ x .5″ base, with no visible means of support, for Kitty’s very graceful, unencumbered stance!
From the bottom of the base to the tips of Lockheed’s raised wings, the statue is 10″ tall overall. If the 2″ long wings were spread out horizontally, he’d have a 4.25″ wingspan. Including her .5″ high boot heels, Kitty stands about 8.5″ tall atop the base. Her slim physique, adorable portraiture, minute details and anatomical proportions are all quite lovely, and I would have to reach very far to find any quibbles over this exquisite statue; however, I did notice something about the size & scale. Since the figure is 8″ tall (excluding the heels), at 1/7th, that would represent a person who is 56″ tall, or 4’8″… but in the comic books, Kitty is 5’6″! Because the statue’s proportions look so nice, I would’ve assumed that it was more like 1/8th scale, had I not read the notes on the box.
So, I guess technically for a 1/7 scale figure to accurately reflect her 5’6″ height, then it should be 9.4″ tall… but I’m not quibbling! Everything about the sculpt & paint are so precise, from the lashes & reflections in her eyes, the white teeth & soft Pink lips of her playfully cute expression, to the intricacy of her fingers, the fit of the gloves, vest & belt, and the turned cuffs of the “buccaneer” boots! The excellence continues in Lockheed too, from his underbite jaw, teeth & horns, to the wrinkles, ribs, and the contented curve of the tail! The beautiful statue is snugly packaged inside the clear plastic clamshell, within the outer 10.5″ x 6.75″ x 5.5″ box, with the clear windows, notes & the great illustration & photos! That’s all of our reviews, but we have more toys to talk about in
The Monthly Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!
Hai, this is the portion of The Mew which purraises the famous catgirls & nekomimis of the books, cinema, TV, internet, games, toys & other media, nya! We are very broadly inclusive in defining the catgirl criteria, whether they actually purrt feline, just dress the purrt, or have the purropurr cattitude or the abilities as the “honorary” catgirls, even if they lack the neko ears & tail, nya! Last month the spotlight shined upon more catgirls of the games, and we wish to amend the spotlight with Thunder Nyan Nyan of Yu-Gi-Oh, nya! She is the purrky Redhead with the supple ears, the widdle oni horns, and the sleeveless tiger stripe outfit, nya! She is the drumming duelist who will put the purr in the purrcussion, nya! Nyow we will go from the games to the toys & collectibles, nya!
We have purreviously shined the spotlight upon the catgirls of Mattel’s Monster High, such as Toralei, Catrine de Mew, Meowla & Purrsephone, but nyow we will amend the list with Catty Noir, the idol singer introduced in their 13 Wishes animated movie! She is the glitzy, supurrstitous Pink – haired, kuronekomimi songstress! Another recent subcattygory of Monster High is the Power Ghouls line of the characters as the supurr heroines & villains, including Toralei alias Cat-tastrophe! She is the sneaky werecatgirl of the Red & Black striped costume and the mischievous dispurrsition!
In the October 2012 Mew we mentioned Mattel’s Barbie Millicent Roberts, her family & friends in their catgirl appurral! Her younger sister Chelsea Kelly Roberts and her friends Delia, Kira, Madison & Tamika are represented by the 5.5″ fashion dolls, including the Chelsea & Friends Amusement Park Collection, in which they each have the outfits accessorized by the headband with the costume ears or antenna! For example, Madison has the kitty ears and Delia has the bunny ears! Kawaii!
Speaking of the cuteness, Spin Master’s Kawaii Crush purroduct line includes the girls with the removable kemonomimi hats who are accompanied by the widdle pets, such as Katie Cat Meow Meow, Sunny Bunny Hop Hop. Amanda Panda Pop, Owlena Hoot Hoot, Tammy Lamby Lu Lu, Betty Teddy Zoom Zoom and their other friends!
Bratz is the line of the posable fashion dolls made by MGA, including Chloe, Jade, Meygan, Sasha & Yasmin! They have kitty couture in the Bratz Catz packages which include the outfits of the animal purrint, the sunglasses that can be worn as the ear pinna & the feathery boa that can be worn as the tail, and the cute widdle kitties too! Chloe is the Blonde girl with the Pink ears, Jade is the Asian girl in the White tiger stripe, Meygan is the Redhead with the Black tail, Sasha has the White tail in the contrast with her dark mocha skin, and Yasmin has the tan skin & Orange tail!
The late movie FX maestro Stan Winston was purrhaps best known for The Terminator, Aliens, Predator, Jurassic Park, Batman Returns and Edward Scissorhands, A.I. and Pumpkinhead among his many cinema & TV achievements, but his studio also designed the exquisite action figures too! Those include the Realm of the Claw male & female felinoid anthropurrmorphic characters compurrised of the Kaela, Nakura, Tswana, Tare & Zynda! Kaela is the Cheetah type of feline femme fatale and Zynda is the Lynx type of lethal lady on the purrowl!
Four Horsemen Studios is the famous studio of toy & action figure designers, and one of their exquisite lines was the the 7th Kingdom! This sword & sorcery themed line of 7″ action figures from 2009 included characters of various anthropurrmorphic species, such the warrior women of Queen Alkuxandra’s royal guard! These lithe lovely ladies in the ornate bikini armor with blade weapons included Akkuli (Blue fur), Baddathiir (Panther), Biggara (White Tiger), D’Zwirra (Orangey Tiger), Oktobria (Snow Leopurrd) & Raavia (Red pelage)!
For Yamato Toys of Japan, sculptor Kouichi Yamazaki designed the delightful Tandem Twins collection of the sexy fierce animal girls on the purrowl! Those 1/6 scale PVC statues include the lovely Lynx girls such as Ruby, Sapphire & Topaz, the Leopurrd girls such as Cloe, Schell & Momo! The Tandem Twins line also includes the sexy savage sirens of the other species, such as the dog girls Alma & Annarose, and the sheep girls Merino & Wolala! They are gorgeous, graceful, voluptuous, intricately sculpted & painted!
I have the figure of the Red-eyed Ruby who is crouched with the katana drawn from the back slung scabbard! If she were standing up she would be about 11″ tall, so at the 1/6 scale the character would be 5’6″ tall in the real life! Her long Black ponytail is whipping around, and her short spotted tail is poised for the pounce, as her ears purrk to hear the enemy, who would purrobably like to see her without the armor pieces, and the removable dark Blue bikini top, but her sword’s long blade might be the deterrence!
We cannot list all of the many statues, ornaments, miniatures, action figures, dolls or plushies based upon the catgirls or other kemonomimi of the cartoons, comics, animation, games movies & TV, or even the original character creations, but there are a few recent & forthcoming ones that I’d like to mention, such as the nekomimi figures of “kuroneko” Ruri from the Oreimo manga & anime; the action figure & fashion doll based upon Julie Newmar’s purrtrayal of Catwoman from the 1966 Batman TV series, and the Hello Kitty plushies of Kitty in her purretty Christmassy appurral!
A few other tempting toys & kemonomimi collectibles in the cat-alogs include Sanrio & Capcom’s Sanrio X Streetfighter plushies of Kitty cosplaying as Streetfighter’s Chun Li & Cammy, Yamato’s 1/6 scale “Pearl White” PVC figure of Dendrobium Sisters’ Violet with the cat ears; and beautiful bunny girls such as QuesQ’s 1/8 scale figure of Eiyuu Senki’s Percival, and Goodsmile’s 1/4 scale figure of Nitroplus’s Super Sonico! Next month the spotlight will shine on a Winter mix of nekomimi of various media, but now it’s time for our picks for the
Biggest Surprises of 2013!
2013 was full of Marvel-ous surprises, such as Chris Evans briefly appearing as Loki’s illusion of Captain America in Thor: The Dark World, and the appearance of Benecio del Toro as The Collector during the end credits!
Hai hai, and Mark Ruffalo’s brief appurrance as Dr. Banner at the end of Iron Man 3, and Samuel L. Jackson’s brief appurrance as Col. Nick Fury at the end of the 2nd epurrsode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series!
I was gladly surpurrised to see Patrick Stewart & Ian McKeller repurrise their roles of Purrofessor Xavier & Magneto at the end of The Wolverine movie, and to see the recent teaser trailer for The Avengers: The Age of Ultron in the theatre, nya! However, there was also he unfortunate cancellation of our favorite Marvel comic book of 2013, the Fearless Defenders, nya.
Hai, and we were also saddened by the cancellation of our favorite DC comic of 2013, Ame-Comi Girls, and the cancellation of Kate (Batwoman) & Maggie’s purroposed marriage. In brighter bat mews, I was also not expecting the fun comics & toys based upon the 1966 Batman TV series! Nyow if only they would release the TV series upon the DVD, too!
I could not have purrdicted the wonderful return of the Elfquest comics either! Speaking of the elves, it was this time last year when we were surpurrised to see the action figure of Evangeline Lily as Tauriel, the sylvan elf heroine of Mirkwood, because she was not in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey! She did not debut until 11 month later, in the sequel The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug!
Speaking of the ladies with the lovely ear pinna of the supple tapurred tip, it was also the pleasant surpurrise to see Clawdine, Howleen & Clawd Wolf’s older sister Clawdia recently appurr in Monster High magazine #6! I was also amazed to see the widdle Star Trek “Return of The Archons” purrody in one panel of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic book #10!
Although we were disappointed by Star Trek Into Darkness, we were pleased to see the brief appurrance of sisters Kellie & Katie Cockrell in the movie as the twin Caitian catgirls with the swishy tails! Speaking of the cat surpurrise, the Auburn Tigers’ last-second win over the Alabama Crimson Tide on November 30th was one of the most memorable sports moments of the year!
I was also startled by the betrayal of Ahsoka Tano by Barriss Offee in the 5th season finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars! We hope that Ahsoka could return to hang out with Luke in the next movies! My other pick for the big surpurrise was Beyonce’s latest album which was released out of the Blue in December! What are Mike’s picks?
Oh gosh, there were several things on Doctor Who that I didn’t see coming! Like ah, John Hurt as The Doctor, the return of Paul McGann as The Doctor; and Tom Baker as The Curator in the 50th Anniversary Special! Those are our picks for the biggest surprises of 2013, and that’ll wrap it up for this edition of The Mew!
