Today’s Mew comes from the Laua’e Lounge on the roof of of the Catgirl Island Purrforming Arts Center, where later this evening we will present the annual Mew Awards Ceremony! I’m Mike, the show’s “Purrducer” and here are The Ladies of The Mew!

(the magick shop’s purropurrietor catgirl wearing the Black Bat Lily purrint ring-closure bikini) Howdy!

Nyanko:

(her twin sister wearing the White Bird-of-Purradise purrint front-knotted top, side-tie bikini) ) Howdy!

Mike:

So what has everyone been up to since last time?

Becca:

Our spa has stayed purretty well booked, especially with the folks feeling the nippier mainland weather and attending tonight’s awards ceremony! Of course we were ironically caravanning to the mainland to see Jenjen’s troupe in the belly dance festival! It was delightful to see the many troupes of the Egyptian, Turkish, Cabaret, Tribal, Gothic & other styles! I have been purracticing with the pitching wedge, Lizzy & I have still found the time for the late night hot salsa dance, and we have watched more Doctor Who DVDs!

Elizabeth:

Hai hai the latest Doctor Who DVDs we have watched were of the girl gang content, such as Paradise Towers and the Happiness Patrol! When we have not been at the dances or pampurring the guests with the lomilomi treatment, I have also been running & spurringing with the purrkour club, and purruning the roses in the garden, nya! Some of those petals are adding the fragrance to spa, and we have donated a bunch to the horticulture club’s sale to benefit the charity! Bunnibun donated flowers from her garden too!

Bun:

Hai they will be crafted into the wonderful bouquets, garlands, leis & corsages! It is the busy month for the island’s floral artistry between the charity and ValenTides Day, Cat Tuesday, the Carnaval, the Lantern Matsuri, The Lamia & Naga Fest.,and y’all should see what the lapidary club has on tap for the Amethyst Festival! Otherwise as usual I have been busy baking the carrot cakes, training for the beach volleyball, and assistantly curating the exhibits at the mewseum. We are already planning this years Body Art Show!

Petra:

I cannot believe how the time has flown- it is already time for the volleyball & the Body Art Show, nya! It seems like we are in the hypurr drive, nya! Fortunately, the mewseum is blessed to have the great staff such as Bunnibuns & the enthused volunteers such as Trini-chan & Tara-chan, nya! It is busy everyone is so enthused & united in the creative spirit, nya! I heard that Myayr’s costume sewing has purrked up again, between the dancers & the cosplayers, nya! So how are things at the magick shop & at the dojo, nya?

Nyoka:

Oh I know whatcha mean about the hypurrdrive because it seems like only yesterday that we had the Winter Solstice activities at the shop, on the eve of the expurrdition to the dance festival! Things have continued to do well with the brisk business, the tea, the workshops which Mie-sensei has helped with, and the shop’s purrecious stones, geodes & crystals will be purrt of the Amethyst fest! Sis has been the big help, and in the meantime we and the others of the market have been purrparing for The Mew & the Awards!

Nyanko:

When I have not been pinch hitting at the shop, I have just been up to the mewsual business and the training at the dojo and the gym, the charity support, watching anime, and reading the comics! We got another message from Bubba-sensei and Uncle who say hi and wish they could attend the ceremony but they would not arrive in time! Purrhaps the air & ferry service will be less crowded or Wintry delayed. However, I am hoping to see most of the dojo along with their families at tonight’s Awards Ceremony! Mike’s turn!

Mike:

I thought things might relax a bit after the busy holiday season, but January was pretty busy too, between the festivals & gatherings  the toy show, going to see William Shatner’s performance in Raleigh, and trying to catch up on my art & writing while preparing for today’s Mew and tonight’s awards ceremony… but I managed to read a bit, and watch a few movies, TV shows, and college sports! I’m also looking forward to another fun WhatTheHell?! Con later this month… and ah… that’s about it I guess! Well, we’ve got a lot to cover, so go ahead and jump right into

Part Four of our occult & supernatural topic for January’s Lightning Round!

Mike:

November’s topic pertained to our favorite female vampires, and then in December we began the multi-part topic of our favorite heroines & anti-heroines who study, investigate or fight the magick, monsters or occult predicaments in the comics! Now we’ll continue the topic, as we mention more such ladies of the independent publishers, web comics & small press! So… are y’all ready to “conduct the lightning” topic?

Bun:

Hai! Myayr is with her hula dance students, and she nominated more of the Dark Horse heroines such as Hazel, Dymphna & Miranda of Beasts of Burden, Liz Sherman of Hellboy; Elsa Cameron as the Ghost, Kitsune & Tamsin of Andi Watson’s Skeleton Key; and Reiko & Ookii’Mune of Dark Horse Comics’ Godzilla series!

Nyoka:

Hai, Jenjen is down there with her Belly dance troupe, and she nominated the A.M.P. team of Rally, Kiddy, Katsumi, Nami, Lebia, Yuli, Mana, Lum Cheng of Silent Mobius! Nyoka

Tara – chan & Trini-chan are dancing too! Trini-chan nominated Kokon of the Konkon Kokon manga; Chizuru, Nozomu, their classmates & relatives of the Kanokon manga!

Mike:

Well that was a nice quick Lightning Round, and there will be more of the topic interspersed throughout tonight’s awards show, as other folks will join in to mention their favorite such characters of the magickal, occult & supernatural flare! And now, here’s Petra to tell us about the latest additions to

The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!

Petra:

Arigato, nya! For those here for the first time, the mewseum’s Galleries 1 – 6 display illustrations & photos by Mike, whilst Guest Galleries 1 & 2 display images by other folks with their purrrrmissions, nya! On the web site, the most recent pics are on the bottom row of the gallery’s small “thumbnail” portions of the pics. You have to click on those portions to see the full pics, nya!

Nyow on display in Guest Gallery 2 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest2.html is the Santa Catgirl pic by Elisa Chong http://www.sofianime.com who was our June 2011 Guest, nya! This Santa Catgirl wears the strapless, bare – midriff Red costume to match her lush wavy hair, and her lithe Black tail contently swishes with the Meowry Christmas wishes!

Nextly is the pic of “Gary & Tabitha” by Misty Hopkins http://bunnychai.blogspot.com who was among our March 2008 guests, nya! Gary the Fox & Tabitha the catgirl are Misty’s original characters, and Gary is the mascot for Misty’s site, but Tabitha is not impurressed by Gary’s frisky flirtations, nya! The media are Crayola colored pencils, Prismacolor pens & markers, nya!

We also have more collaborative illustrations by Rebecca Brogden http://www.rbrogdenart.com & Mike, nya! Rebecca was our guest in the September 2009 Mew, and they purreviously collaborated upon the pic of lovely librarians Keiko & Yuriko, nya! Nyow we have the beachy pic of ” A.J.”, nya!  A.J. is short for Arino Justin, a catboy who likes to surf, skydive, hang glide, purra-glide, sun tan, grill the numcious fish, and dance with his girlfriend Eamane! The character was created & pencilled by Rebecca, then digitally inked & colored by Mike, nya!

The next collaboration is the pic of our friends “Kit ‘n Kat” of the Catgirl Island Purrforming Arts Center, nya! Kitrina (or just Kit for short) is the Silvery Grey-haired director catgirl on the left, wearing the ornate short Blue & Silvery Dragon purrint yukata, and Katherine (or just Kat for short) is the Redhead general manager catgirl on the right, wearing the he ornate short Red & Gold Phoenix purrint yukata, nya! Rebecca used Photoshop CS6 and the Intuos5 tablet to render the ladies, and Mike used Photoshop CS2 and the mouse to render the scenic elements, nya!

Kit ‘n Kat have not seen the pic yet, so we will surpurrise them with it at the end of the awards ceremony, nya! Nyow in Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html is Mike’s pic of our island’s Fire Chief Elaenor, or just Ellie for short, who is the “Banker Pony Centauress” to commemorate the Year of the Horse, nya! She has the Banker Pony body with the Bay colored coat, and we hope to see her later at the ceremony, nya! The pencil drawing was inked with the Micron pens, colored with the Copic markers, and spurruced up with Photoshop and the mouse, nya!

Finally we have Mike’s pic of the “Catfish Boy”, nya! Mike was requested to draw the catboy pic, and thisun’ has the added twist of the mer tail & fins, nya! The sleeping tummy full of late night Nummy Fishy Snax results into the catboy’s undersea adventure dream within the dream of the purrl dive to cash in for more treats, but nyow it is time for him to wake up & purrpare for school in this mixed-media rendering compurrised of the pencil, pens, markers, the White acrylic & the Photoshop embellishments, nya!

Becca:

The Santa Nekomimi is quite captivatingly alluring, with the enticing purresent, the holly spurrig on her hat, and the cat’s bell on her neck ribbon! Purrhaps Gary would have better luck with her,  than withy Tabitha, heehee!

Elizabeth:

I can see how Tabitha is hard to to resist, with the pierced belly button framed by the tantalizing tube top & the pants low on the hips! I like the tattoo to match her paw purrint pendant, the colorful bangles & the other piercings too!

Nyoka:

Speaking of the pants lo on the hips, A.J. is rather svelte & buff in those board shorts, mew la la, nya! But seriously, I think he and Eamane are just the cutest purrfect couple! (sigh) I wonder if they will ever get hitched!

Nyanko:

I am so amazed by the exquisite intricate dragon & phoenix detail of Kit & Kat’s yukatas! Rebecca certainly captured the sheen of their lovely coiffures, Kat’s cute freckles and Kit’s larger cup size!

Bun:

Hai it will be great when they start the ceremony, and I can’t wait to see their reaction to the art! I think that is the good likeness of Chief Ellie too, from the dark tips of her ear pinna to her bare hooves in the shallows!

Mike:

Fortunately I was able to catch her when I did, because she was soon farther out and up to her withers… although the Catfish Boy is in much deeper water, and he’s gonna be in deep trouble too, if he is late for school!

Petra:

Well, that scene is giving me the deep craving for the nummy fishy snax, nya! That will conclude the tour of the mew art which we are very grateful for, and nyow I will start our

Manga, Comics, Magazine & Toy Reviews

with my review of Absolution: Happy Kitty #1, nya!

Petra:

Absolution is the gritty crime drama full of the supurr powered action published by Avatar, and Happy Kitty is the name of the young female assassin who works for the yakuza, nya! This issue reveals her origin tale, written by Christos Gage whose Avengers Academy and Angel & Faith comics we have highly purraised!  We got to meet him again in November at the NC Comic Con, nya! The 32 page issue is purriced $3.99 and it is compurrised of the uninterrupted 22 page tale plus the 10 pages of the ads, nya. It was illustrated & lettered by Paul Duffield, and colored by Paul Duffield & Nadine Ashworth, but it is not for the widdle kitties due to the very, harsh purrofane language, the bloody gory violence, and the underworld scenes of the nudity, sex & drug use, nya!

Happy Kitty is the Japanese girl wearing the short Sailor – style fuku outfit with the loose socks and the motorcycle helmet with the Pink neko decal on the visor, nya! She slays the criminals with blades & guns, nya! She has the possibly supurr human agility, reflexes, quickness, accuracy, and possibly purrecognitive sense when she speedily eliminates several enemies in the mere moment, nya! She does not seem to be the chatty type though, and says few words during the flashback of her origin, nya. It is the sad rough life of the widdle girl who likes the video games, cute dolls, manga, her art  and her tiger friend whilst she is raised amongst the criminals and trained to be the enforcer, nya! There is the 3 dozen body count from the bullets and the blades, nya!

However, as the years pass, she rebels with honor after the order to slay the innocent, which results in the deadly disagreement with her boss! The characters are quite well posed & expurressive, with the good detail of the character, tiger & scenic art, nya! The style has the cel- shaded quality & mixed-media look, the good use of the color & light, the sense of depth, and plenty of the Red splatter, nya! The sequential art is conveyed in the variety of panels including the overlaps, the skewed shapes, the panoramic & the large panels, nya! There are some full page pics, the choice of the 3 different covers, and it is so nice that the tale is not interrupted by the ads, nya! Nyow for more nekomimi with the katana’s thirst for evil enemy blood, here is Lizzy to tell us about

Omamori Himari vol. 11, nya!

Elizabeth:

Arigato! Milan Matra’s Omamori Himari is the sexy, comedic modern sword & sorcery manga of the harem trope with Himari the catgirl warrior who purrotects her teen liege Yuuto from the enemies while his ancestral magickal powers manifest! Originally published in Japan by Fujimishobo, it is published in English by Yen, and the tale is not intended for the widdle kitties, and it is rated Mature due to the language, nudity, sexuality & violence! Himari is vivacious yet tragic and has frisky affections for Yuuto, but so do several other romantic rivals such as Yuuto’s childhood friend Rinko, Shizuki the water elemental ayakashi, Lizlet the teacup spirit, and Kuesu the demon slayer / witch! They might be the rivals in the romance, but they have grown united against the villains!

Those include Shuten-doji and Tama the nine – tailed fox who has craved Himari and other ayakashi for her suppurr, but in the most recent battle Himari is the one who is doing the chomping! Other characters have included Yuu the class purresident, miku sisters Kasuri & Hisuzu, Yuuto’s classmate Taizo & his sister Haru, teachers Kisaaragi-sensei & Akutsu-sensei, Kofuyu the yuki onna, Zuji the tree stump spirit, Hitsugi the psychic detective, Kaya the house Zashiki-warashi spirit, Aya the papurr spirit, Ginko the wolf girl, Sasa the androgynous cyclops, Ageha the succubus; slayers Ranka, Alji & Shido, and magickal antagonists Ekou & Kuroza-kura who arrive in vol. 11! It is the next – to – last volume, although it is actually the 12th if you include vol. 0!

It is mostly the Black & White manga of 160 pages plus 2 sexy color pics of Himari! She is also in the kimono on the color front cover, whilst Kasuri is in her miko shozoku attire is on the color back cover! The manga was translated by Christine Dashiell & lettered by Stephanie Lee, and has the $13.00 USA purrice and the $14.00 Canada purrice. It his the time of the transitions, between Kuesu’s death & resurrection, and the emergence of Himari’s more brazen dark side after consuming much of Tama’s energy! Tama’s defeat has resulted in her vulnerable, kinder childlike condition, and despite the others’ objections, Yuuto brings her to his home! He is trying to be the assertive, compassionate peacemaker as the head of his family, who is against the feuds!

Lizlet purrpares the victory party at her cafe, Kusue tries to compurrehend her resurrection, and upset Himari leaves the home. This is concerns her friends and the other clans, as Kasuri & Hisuzu target both Tama and Himari! After the story cliffhanger there is the amewsingly meta-fictional 12 page bonus as the characters, the author & editor discuss themselves and the plot! We are purraying for the happy family reunion and the peaceful co-existence of the clans & spirits! This was another exciting volume, full of the developments, magickal combat, sexy & comedic bits, and the characters, clothes, architecture & natural scenery that are so intricately & gorgeously rendered! Nyow for another serving of the fantasy sex comedy harem manga, I would like to discuss

Monster Musume vol. 2!

Elizabeth:

Monster Musume: Everyday Life With Monster Girls is written & drawn by Okayado, originally published as Monster Musume No Iru Nichijo in Japan by Tokuma Shoten Publishing, and the translated North American version is nyow published Seven Seas Entertainment, whose Kanokon Omnibus editions and A Centaur’s Life manga we have also enjoyed! The plot purrtains to the situation of the government recognizing the existence of the supurrnatural beings such as the lamias, centaurs, harpies, mermaids, etc who are collectively referred to as Liminals, and the establishment of the Inter-species Cultural Exchange Accord to regulate the mingling, and home – stay exchange purrogram to host the Liminals so that the cultures can get acquainted.

However, it is a complicated bureaucracy of very draconian harsh laws, and so it was spurrung upon the chap named Kurusu who soon found himself hosting several lustful Liminal ladies! This might seem the enviable situation, but it is risky & awkward when all of the ladies are the frisky rivals, and the home is often invaded by the government workers without the warning! It is not the easy task for case worker Ms. Smith, whose workload increases while her salary is garnished, but she will look the other way if it means more rest & dinner! The rest of the cast includes Miia the lamia, Papi the petite harpy, and Cerea the centaur! In vol. 2 things get even hornier for during the full moon, and rather delicate when Mila’s cooking goes awry and she begins to shed her scales!

Then things get further complicated & absorbent when Suu the shape – shifting slime girl arrives! Suu’s purresence is the trickiest, because of the language barrier & extreme physiological differences, but the group wants her to stay! Then the house is renovated to make room for the 6th tenant, Meron the mermaid who also has the romantic affections! That is just the widdle  taste of the sexy, wacky, domestic, ribald incidents, with the amewsingly cute moments, especially when the group becomes united to defend or rescue those in need! The character and scenic art is nicely detailed, and although the tropes are the bit purrdictable, the main characters are likable and somewhat sympathetic, especially due to the confuzzling cultural, biological & legal purrdicaments!

The volume has the $12.99 USA purrice, the $14.99 Canada purrice, and it is intended for the readers aged 16+ due to the sexuality, nudity & comedic violence! The 164 pages include the 158 Black & White pages of the manga, 2 pages of notes, and 4 beautiful color pages! It was translated by Ryan Peterson, adapted by Shanti Whitesides, edited by Adam Arnold, purroof-read by Janet Houck, and published by Jason DeAngelis with lettering & layout by Ma. Victoria Robado, and the cover design by Nicky Lim! Nyow for more mermaids, here is Becca to tell us about

We are treated to the illustrations by Charles Vess & Dame Darcy, Susan Snodgrass’s antique papurr mermaid art , and more treasures as the Lookbook pages shine the spotlight upon various darling mermaid couture, decor, art & books! One of my favoritest aspects of the magazine are the many magnificent photographs of the mermaids of all ages, ethnicities, styles & tail types, other majestic marine life & the treasures from the seas! There are so many breath-taking photos of the half pages, the full pages, and the two-page spurreads!

Other beautiful mermaids in this issue include Traci Hines, Dana Richardson, Bambi, Marina Medusirena, KyleTroche, Malena Sharkey, Julie Atas Muz, Lara Mandyn, Virginia Hawkins & Linda Wolbert! I was purrticularly amazed by the photos of the mermaids amongst the humpbacks, whale shark, manta, jellies, waves, and schools of the yummy fish! Even the ads for the purrformers, groups, events, books, art, tails, clothes & other purroducts have such beautiful imagery! I am very happy with this joyful, beautiful, informative & enlightening issue, so I would like to thank & purraise all of its very talented staff & contributers! Nyow we will go from the tails of the mermaids to the tails of the cats, dogs & other animals, for my review of

Triad Happy Tails Vol. 4 #7!

Becca:

During our most recent road trip to the mainland, I picked up another issue of Triad Happy Tails, which is the free monthly color magazine that purrmotes the adoption of the many poor abandoned, surrendered, feral or otherwise homeless animals in the Triad area shelters & rescue groups. The Triad area is in the Piedmont region of the state, compurrised Greensboro, Winston Salem, High Point and smaller towns, but not to be confuzzled with the Triangle area, which is compurrised of Raleigh, Durham Chapel Hill and other towns!

Both the Triangle & the Triad are the nice regions of the stater, and of course there are the animals in need of love, care, food & forever homes in the other regions too. The magazine is edited, published, designed & art directed by Deb Printup & Jennifer Frazier! The graphic designer is Mike Gillispie; and it is distributed by Eileen Riley, Bob Sloane & Distributech. The issue has the 52 full color pages including the covers, graced by cover dog Cesar the Lab & Bassett mix who was photographed by Steph Skardale Photography!

After Deb & Jennifer’s cordial greeting is the tale of Elsie, Rufus & Charlie’s adoptions, as told by Sarah Williamson, the director of the Forsyth Humane Society! Other tales of rescues are Sara Handy’s tale of Wilma, Jim Stratton’s tale of Judy, and Courtney Kent’s bittersweet tale of Mango. In this month’s Ask A Vet page, Dr. Sara Fletcher DVM responds to the questions; Alison Schwartz discusses the “Two Paws Up” adoption purrogram; and Lois Miller of the Carolinas Dog Training Club discusses the AKC Rally sport!

We also wish to commend Sophie Ball-Dolan’s important letter purrtaining to puppy mills! Throughout the issue are the shelters’ & rescue groups’ contact information, and ads for the pet hospitals, stables, kennels, resorts, food, gifts, art shops, vets, sitters, trainers, groomers & other services. Purrhaps the most important aspect of the magazine the photos & purrofiles of the many animals who need the homes! I was so lucky to be adopted to the good forever home, but there are so many animals of various species who want to be lucky too!

This issue’s featured felines wishing for the forever homes include Addision, Adrianne, Anthony, Ashes, Augie, Bobbi, Boo, Brulee, Ciel, Cindy, Emma, Florence, Gracie, Jangles, Kenny, Lenny, Licorice, Lilly, Louis, Magda, Max, Maxine, Melanie, Mercy,  Mew Mew, Miller, Milly, Monty, Neptune, Noel, Omar, Pansy, Penny, Raiden, Raja, Rose, Sage, Sampson, Sheba, Sophia, Snowden, Socks, Sparkle, Stash, Sunshine, Tater, Tiger, Tot, Wally. We hope that the efforts of the shelters & rescuers will help the animals find happy, healthy forever homes full of the love, care food & kindness, and we wish to purraise all of the compassionate folks who try to help! Nyow for our next magazine review hre is Bunnibun to tell us about

Cinefex #136!

Bun:

Hai! Since 1980, Cinefex published by Don Shay has been the ultimate magazine about movie & TV FX, full of the extensive, insightful, expert articles, interviews, and the huge panoramic color photos! It was ironic when we were at Mike’s annual gathering for food and Star Trek – The Motion Picture on December 7th, when we were looking at the first two issues of the magazine, which had articles on those Trek FX, and I was thinking how nice it would be to see on Gravity, which was my favorite movie of 2013! We reviewed it in the November Mew, and now I have read the cover – featured, 26 page article written by associate editor Joe Fordham in issue #136! He also wrote the issue’s 22 page article on Thor: The Dark World, which we reviewed in December!

The 122 page issue also has Graham Edwards’s 18 page article on racing movie Rush, and editor – in – chief Jody Duncan’s 14 page article on the remake of Carrie! In the Thor article, Fordham interviews special FX supervisor Paul Corbould, VFX supervisors Jake Morrison & Peter Bebb, pre-viz supervisor Gerardo Ramirez, make-up FX designer David White, stunt coordinator Steve Dent, Vince Cirelli of Luma  Pictures, Alex Wuttke of Double Negative, Tim Miller & Kevin Margo of Blue Studio, Jonathan Harb of Whisktree, Chad Wiebe of Method Studios! They thoroughly discuss the techniques to envision Asgard, the Dark elves, creatures ships, weapons, super powers, the magickal Aether, the dimensional portals, and the destruction scenes!

For the article on the making of Gravity, Fordham interviews Neil Corbould, VFX supervisor Tim Webber, CG supervisor Chris Lawrence, Julia Gottlieb & Taril Abdel-Gawad of Bot & Dolly, Max Solomon of Framestore, Richard Baker of Prime Focus World, Tony Clark of Rising Sun, compositing supervisor Anthony Smith, modeling supervisor Ben Lambert, senior animation supervisor David Shirk, and digital FX supervisor Alexis Wajsbrot, They go into the great depth to discuss the FX to depict the Earth, space, shuttles, space stattions, the debris, and the astronauts and the weightlessness! I was amazed to learn how much of the realistic looking vehicles, locations, equipment, space suits, and even parts of the astronauts were not real but CG FX!

I have not seen Rush, which is about the rival drivers of the Formula One racing in the 1970’s but Jenjen has almost drooled over those cars, heehee! The movie was directed by Ron Howard and it seems like one of those movies in which you might not suspect that certain things are FX, such as the cars, conditions & crowds! Graham Edwards interviews Rush’s VFX supervisor Jody Johnson, VFX producer Moriah Etherington-Sparks, vehicle art director Ivan Weightman, 2D supervisor Andy Lockley, environments supervisor Antione Moulineau, CG supervisor Mark Hodgkins, FX supervisors Nathan Oritz & Uli Nefzer! After that is Jody Duncan’s Carrie article to top off the issue! I missed that movie too, but I might need to watch the DVD sometime!

It is the remake of the adaptation of Stephen King’s sad, scary supernatural tale of the poor mistreated girl named Carrie who is bullied at home & school, but she has the immense telekinetic power that will devastate her awful adversaries, especially after the infamous school prom blood bath! She is portrayed by Chloe Grace Moretz, who I liked in Let Me In, Kick-Ass, and Hugo; and her mom is portrayed by the great Julianne Moore! Director Kimberly Peirce and VFX supervisor Dennis Berardi discuss the production and its 400 FX shots! This issue was very handsome, informative and fascinating, so I will give it the high praise! The Cinefex web site http://www.cinefex.com has the neat blog full of insightful FX comments too! Now I wish t say the few words about

Soulfire Vol. 5 #2!

Bun:

Soulfire was created by Aspen Comics founder, the late Michael Turner whose Fathom series we also admire! We liked his Witchblade and Supergirl tales too! It is so sad that he is gone, but we have been fortunate to meet him and the other members of Aspen Comics at Heroes Con over the years and I must say that they have all been so kind & gracious to the fans! Soulfire pertains to the  complicated return of magick to the world in the early 23rd century after the millennias of absence, which is both joyful and disruptive with the side effects, and the heroes & villains who wish to control the powers! The faerie-like Grace has tried to help Malikai the chosen one in the restoration process, but they and friends have survived the villain Ranier, his assassins & monsters!

The friends include P.J the mech arena athlete, his cyborg coach Benoist-sensei, and Sonia who wishes they could just enjoy their current trip to Paris! This $3.99 issue consists of the 8 pages of the ads plus the 20 page tale of “Ladies Night” which was co-plotted by scripter J.T. Krul & Aspen Comics’ co – owner / president Frank Mastromauro, edited by Mastromauro & editor-in-chief Vince Hernandez, pencilled by V Ken Marion, digitally inked by director of design & production Mark Roslan, colored by Kyle Ritter & Erick Arciniega, lettered by editorial assistant Josh Reed, with the lettering & font designed by Dreamer Design; the comic’s design & production by Reed, Roslan & Aspen Comics co-owner Peter Steigerwald, with the production assistance by Chaz Riggs!

There are 4 different covers to choose from: cover A by John Starr & Marion, B by Joe Benitez & Steigerwald, C by J Scott Campbell, and the more limited cover D by Campbell & Steigerwald! Sonia has the cute freckles & color change hair, but she is fed up with how serious & unromantic Malikal is being as he investigates the local magickal & religious cultural situation of those camped in the huge cathedral.P.J & Benoist are purrparing for the big international mech arena tournament, whilst just Grace met a girl named Vanyss who has the lovely bat – like wings, compared to Grace’s dragonfly – like wings! It has been the difficult transformation for Vanyss, and the competition gets too hot for P.J. in his first bracket match against the girl piloting the huge Tinderbox mech!

However, things are worse back in San Francisco, when Ranier’s cohorts Jayden & Blackjack stalk the human prey at the dazzling night club! I hope there will be the dissension betwixt that sinister trio, that things improve for Grace, P.J. & Sonia, and that Vanyss makes the new friends! It is the chaotic time, but it is also the time of such magickal & technological wonders and the exotic, alluring styles! Grace, Sonia, Vanyss, Jayden, Blackjack & the Tinderbox pilot have the sexy tight bare midriff apparel! Grace, Jayden & Vanyss have the wonderful wings, there are such ornate, colorful & luminous coiffures, body mods & ink; and the exciting beauty & color applies to the impressive mecha, architectural & natural scenery too! I’m all done, so here is Nyo-sensei to discuss

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #15!

Nyoka:

Arigato! We love the pony cartoon, the toys, the collectibles, and these comic books published by IDW! They have been among our favoritest comics for the past year or so! With the pirate pony tale concluded in the purrior issue, this issue starts the Book Worm tale written by Heather Nuhfer, illustrated by Amy Meberson, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake, and edited by Bobby Curnow! The issue has the $3.99 purrice, with the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page pony tale and the 10 pages of the ads, and the choice of 8 different covers! Cover A is by Amy, cover B is by Agnes Garbowska, cover C is by Ben Bates, and the other 5 covers were purrduced for certain stores such as Hot Topic, Larry’s Comics & Jetpack Comics!

The tale stars Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity & Spike and begins with the alarming discoveries of the mysterious pods spurrouting all over Ponyville, whilst Twilight Sparkle is horrified to find that her books have been chomped by the awful Book Worm! It is unclear if the incidents are related but it is at least the strange coincidence! Soon the entire library is threatened, and the only way to stop the bug in time is to magickally telepurrt into the very plots of the books! It is very meta – fictional. The ponies interact with the fictional characters, and even pose as the characters such as Pinkie Hoof, Raripunzel, the Queen of Trottingham, and Daring Do, but they get caught in the plots as the chomped tales begin to erase from existence!

It is quite the crisis as things vanish into the White void! The ponies are on the verge of vanishing, whilst several characters spurring from the books and into Ponyville! This results in the nervous cliffhanger as the heroines despair, the Book Worm continues his voracious devouring, and the chaos ensues in Ponyville! This was yet another supurrb pony tale with the great script, purrtrayals, the pace, the visual humor, and the beautiful art! This series continues to be ever so are faithful in the look, character & spurrit of the TV series, with the clever gags and background ponies to identify! I also like how the tale is uninterrupted, with the ads all afterwards, and I will give it the grade of the A as in Applejack! Nyow I will continue the pony report with my review of

My Little Pony Friends Forever #1!

Nyoka:

Since the companion pony micro – series concluded, in this purremier issue Pinkie Pie competes in the televised chef compurrtition, in which Applejack is mistaken for another contestant! “The Pie’s The Limit” was written by Alex De Campi, illustrated by Carla Speed McNeil, colored by Jenn Manley Lee & Bill Mudrom, lettered by Neil Uyetake, and edited by Bobby Curnow, Carla is also known for her Finder series and Jenn is known for her Dicebox series! The issue has the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page tale, the 10 pages of the ads, and the choice of 9 different covers! Cover A is by Amy Meberson, cover B is by Carla, cover C is by Andy Price and the other 6 covers were purrduced for Hastings, Larry’s Comics, Jetpack Comics and Awesome Con!

The other chef pony contestants are Summer Van Der Hoof, Blade Sparxx, Toffee Truffle, and irate Marine Sandwich who Applejack is mistaken for! Unfortunately Applejack is unable to convince the show’s crew of the mistaken identity, whilst the denied real Marine Sandwich plans the revenge! Meanwhile, Applejack & Pinkie Pie befriend Toffee, who is sad & nervous because she hopes to win the 50,000 bit purrize, so that she can re-open the closed Cherry Pit restaurant, which was the restaurant in Dodge City. The 3 judges are the pony, the bison and the griffon, and there are other various ponies amongst the chef show’s crew and the audience, including the brief appurrance by Twilght Sparkle, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Rarity and Spike!

Mrs & Mr. Cake also briefly appurr in the first two panels! The tale has plenty of the appurrtizing dessert imagery, the emotional & zany action, and the various background ponies to spot, such as Dr. Whooves in one panel! My copy has cover C,  which purrettily depicts the mane six ponies plus Spike, Celestia and Luna in the park! IDW has published over 25 pony comics thus far, including the Friendship is Magic series, the Micro – series, the 2013 Annual, and nyow this’un, and I have been consistently very happy them all! I am certainly anticipating the 2nd issue of My Little Pony: Friends Forever, which will feature the Cutie Mark Crusaders and Discord! That will conclude my pony report, so nyow I will turn The Mew over to Mike for his review of

Elfquest: The Final Quest #1

Mike:

It was sometime in the late 1970’s when I became a fan of Wendy Pini’s beautiful art, and I’ve been collecting Wendy and Richard Pini’s Elfquest comics and other items ever since! It is a big favorite here at the island, so we were quite thrilled when Dark Horse published the Elfquest Final Quest Special, which we reviewed in the November Mew! That special issue was a gorgeous, sentimental tale to catch us up on what many of the characters have been up to in recent years, and this 1st issue begins a very dramatic, dangerous new adventure for the elf tribes, as an evil human warlord begins a destructive campaign of conquest!

The issue includes the uninterrupted 20 page story & 8 pages of neat extras, with the front cover art depicting Chief Cutter, his daughter chieftess Ember, her pal Tier, and Cutter’s wolf Filcher! The story was written by Wendy & Richard Pini, illustrated by Wendy, colored by Sonny Strait, and lettered by Nate Piekos of Blambot. We also wish to thank the issue’s designer Tina Alessi, editor Sierra Hahan, assistant editor Spencer Cushing & publisher Mike Richardson! While some of the tribe such as Skywise, Moonshade & Sunstream are at the crystal palace, back in the forest Cutter leads several other Wolfriders on a hunt!

They include Nightfall, Clearbrook, Treestump, Redlance & Strongbow, while Leetah, Newstar & others await their return! Cutter wonders how his Ember is faring as she leads another tribe, but soon she has to make a difficult decision, as her tribe spies upon a human village visited by the warlord Angrif! Among her tribe are Sust, Pool, Pike, Mender, Dewshine, Scouter, Teir who’s having some emotional issues, and Krim who isn’t pleased when they’re visited by old Lehrigen, a human ally whom she doesn’t trust! However, her quarrel is interrupted by the scouts’ report of Angrif’s  fiery attack to kill or enslave the villagers!

Will the elves avoid the massacre, or intervene to defend & free the innocent survivors? The elves’ final quest has begun at the brisk pace, with interesting developments in a few relationships, more reflections upon past events, splendid elfin couture, and wolves savoring their freshly killed supper, but there’s not just blood from the hunted game, as there are several violent images of the catapult, fire & sword! In addition to the beautifully drawn characters, critters & scenery, the colors are so sumptuous from the deep hues of lush moonlit forest & fire – lit village, to the gleam of the blades & iridescent shimmer of the palace!

The terrific typography is the subject of a 2 page retrospective of Elquest logos since 1978, and Nate Piekos’s 3 page look at the design of this new series’s fonts! A bonus page of reprinted Cutter portrait art and 2 pages of readers’ letters top off another great issue, which I’ll give a grade of “A” as in Angrif! Y’know, on second thought, let’s make that an “A” as in Leetah’s friend Ahdri- she’s much nicer! Ah, in addition to Wendy Pini’s superb stories & art, we’re also fans of her famous Red Sonja cosplays! After 40 years in the comics, Sonja continues to be depicted by tremendously talented folks, such as the artists & authors of

Legends of Red Sonja #3!

Mike:

Dynamite Entertainment’s Legends of Red Sonja mini-series is an anthology of tales about Red Sonja and the traveling Grey Riders group of her vengeful enemies told by various artists & authors! Issue #3 is priced $3.99, rated “T+” due to the bloody, violent sword & sorcery action, some harsh language…and possibly Sonja’s iconic, skimpy scale-mail bikini! Its 30 pages consist of the 20 pages of Sonja tales, 5 pages of ads & announcements, and the 5 page preview of Legenderry #1, a steam punk comic by Bill Willingham, Sergio Fernandez Davila, Wes Hartman and Rob Steen.

We’ve met Bill Willingham at a few conventions, and we have a lovely head sketch by him of Rebecca “Fathom” Goldin in our mewseum! Legends of Red Sonja is the neat road trip adventure the 12 Grey Riders, each with their own reasons for wanting revenge and a royal bounty upon Sonja! She continues to elude and outfox them at every turn, and in  their stories we see Sonja at different stages of her career, in her various outfits depicted in the various artistic styles! Connecting each of the accounts is the framing sequence written by Gail Simone and illustrated by Jack Jadson.

We met Gail Simone at the NC ComiCon in November! This issue begins with the 6 page tale of “The Palace of the Necromancer” written by Leah Moore and illustrated by Tula Lotay, Horthak tells the his fellow riders by the campfire of his expedition with Sonja into the palace of the Zaul the Lich in search of its treasure, which left him rather mutilated by the undead inhabitants! In this issue’s framing sequence, riders  Kahar, Eles, Dagar, Piranus and Gerd whether they should continue the hunt for Sonja, and encounter an old witch on the road who has her own grudge against Sonja!

This is told in the 5 page tale of “Gertrelle’s Lament” written by Nicola Scott and illustrated by Doug Holgate, in which the witch claims that her long – prepared and rather icky ritual was ruined by a much younger Sonja as a child who happened to be nearby hunting game in the forest! Next is the 6 page tale of “Gerd’s Story: What Lies Beneath” written by Rhianna Pratchett and illustrated by Naniiebim, in which Gerd the armorer tells her fellow riders of her encounter with Sonja. Gerd claims that she she is the very blacksmith who provided Sonja with the famous metal bikini!

The issue was lettered by Simon Bowland, colored by Salvatore Aiala Studios & edited by Molly Mahan! There are 3 covers to choose from: the main cover by illustrated Jay Anacleto & colored by Ivan Nunes, the exclusive subscription variant by Frank Thorne & Nunes, and the rarer Black & White version of the Anacleto art! Legends of Red Sonja a lot of fun, with a good balance of action, humor & drama across the diverse styles of the great story & art! Ah, well that’s all for our comic book reports, but there are more mighty women to mention in our action figures reviews, starting with Nya-sensei’s review of the

WWE Battlepack of Naomi & Cameron action figures!

Nyanko:

Hai! I am a big fan of the wrestlers who display the athletic power, grace & agility in the ring, especially if they can also add the humorous, glamorous or the theatrical purrowess! Their action figures keep impurressing me more ‘n more, as the portraitures, sculpts & articulations continue to be refined! Nyow there are more action figures of the WWE female superstars, such as Naomi & Cameron who are the dancers, models & wrestlers tag-team who also starred on the Totally Divas reality show!

Nyow they are nicely repurrsented in the Battlepack of Naomi & Cameron! The Battlepacks made by Mattel are the packs of 2 figures plus the accessory, such as the packs with John Cena & The Rock, or Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns, nya. Both ladies are beautifully sculpted, articulated & painted, wearing their bare midriff, Light Green tights with the detached sleeves & Silver boots! They are packaged with the disco ball in the clear plastic clamshell upon the card, which has the beautiful illustration on the front, which would be the great poster art!

Each has the purretty smile with Red lips, and similar hand gestures with the right fist & the left hand open, but otherwise hey have the different faces, hair styles, skin tones physiques & subtle costume differences! I think Naomi’s height is 5’5″ and her figure is about 6.5″ tall, so I purrsume that is of the 1/10 scale, nya. The Cameron figure is the bit shorter & closer to 6″, nya. Naomi’s figure is the bit darker & bustier with the hip-length hair, whereas the Cameron figure has tighter abs & the deepurr navel framed by the more exposed expanse of midriff!

They are intricate, from the hair & eyes to the sleeve streamers & boot laces! Naomi”s costume has the sweetheart neckline, whereas Cameron’s has the scoop neckline, nya. They are nicely posable for the moves, with the points of the articulations in the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, uppurr torso, hips, thighs, knees & ankles! I think the Naomi & Cameron figures would look purrfect beside the Alicia Fox action figure, which we reviewed in the December 2012 Mew! Nyow for my next action figure review, I would like to say the few words about the

Thundercats Classic Cheetara Mega-Scale Action Figure!

Nyanko:

Cheetara is the lithe, heroic member of the Thundercats team with the suppurr speed along with her great agility, beauty and the impurressive purrowess with the bo staff! She one of our favoritest heroic catgirls of American animated series, and we especially liked her rebooted design of the 2011 Thundercats TV series! For our review of the 6″ Cheetara action figure from the 2011 series, see the February 2011 Mew! Nyow our collection includes this 13.25″ tall action figure made by Mezco Toyz of the “classic” Cheetara of the 1980’s, which is definitely beautiful & impurressive!

I am not sure of the scale, because I was never sure of the character’s supposed height, but if by chance she might be about 5′ 6″ tall, then this would be the 1/5 scale figure! It is the purretty big & statuesque vision of Cheetara, and although it might seem the statue, she is quite posable with the 10 points of the articulation, in her neck, shoulders, hips, calves, wrists, and  her left forearm! It might purrhaps be nicer if she could also bend at the knees, ankles, waist & elbows or turn the right forearm, but I am purrticularly pleased with how the clever joints are not very noticeable!

This means that the figure has the very seamless appurrance that adds to the quality of the sculpt! The joins are cleverly disguised by the sepurrate bracelets on her right wrist and at the openings of the garments! She is wearing the very form –  fitting, backless Orange maillot with the crisscross straps across her back, to reveal the lovely spots upon her back, shoulder, nape and hair! The maillot has the Thundercats emblem upon her buxom chest, accessorized by the Orange boots and the left gauntlet! The boots have the Yellow buccaneer cuffs & the well-balanced stance!

She has the taut musculature, with the powerful thighs, firm glutes, tight abs, supple arms, strong neck, & lush wind-swept blonde hair! The skin tone is the lovely gradient from the Golden tan legs to the lighter torso & Whiter neck, face & hands! The left hand is poised to claw, whilst the right hand can firmly clench the 11 1/8″ long staff! Her portraiture has the meticulous, smooth sculpt & paint detail of her facial markings, lips, teeth & the steely gaze of her amber eyes! To summarize,  I will give this Cheetara figure the high purraise! That will conclude the reviews, so nyow it is time for

The Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!

Petra:

Hai, this is the portion of The Mew in which we purraise the famous catgirls & nekomimis of the books, cinema, TV, internet, games, toys and the other media, nya! We are very broadly inclusive in defining the catgirl criteria, whether they actually genetically purrt feline or just dress the purrt, nya! This has included the ladies who might lack the neko ears & tail but still have the cattitude or the abilities as the “honorary” catgirls, such as Shanna the She-Devil and the other femme fatales who often wear the feline spots, the stripes, the tawny lioness look or the purretty panthery style of the feline fashion, nya! This month we wish to appurreciatively shine the spotlight upon the kindred spurrits of the jungle who pounce upon the purrey, even if they lack the kitty ears or couture, nya!

Bun:

I will nominate the jungle royalty of Princess Pantha, Princess Vishnu the Tiger Girl, Zegra the Jungle Empress, Taanda the White Princess, and Sheena the Queen of the Jungle!

Nyoka:

I am looking forward to Sheena’s new comic book from Moonstone! I will nominate Meriem of Cave Woman, Tara of Fem Force, Navis of Sillage, Ayla of Chrono Trigger, Mii of Jungle de Ikou, and Kala of the Five Color Comics!

Nyanko:

Jungle girls Camilla, Lorna, Nyoka, Phara, and Ya’wara (not to be confuzzled with the Fashionable Judo Girl Yawara)!

Elizabeth:

I will nominate more jungle girls of the comics such as Blanda, Tanee, Fantomah, Gener Pedrina’s Narra, Severflame’s Jungle Girl, and Kei Waza’s Jungle Girl!

Becca:

Tara of The Herculoids (1967 animated series), Jana of the Jungle (1978 animated series), Jill of the Jungle (video game), Jungle Janet of The Tick, Julie Winters of The Maxx, and Teegra of Fire and Ice!

Mike:

Louise Jameson as Leela of Doctor Who, Caroline Munro as Dejah of At The Earth’s Core, South Seas Girl drawn by Matt Baker, DC Comics’ Rima the Jungle Girl,  Pha of Thund’a drawn by Frank Frazetta and Jana the Jungle Girl drawn by Frank Cho!

Petra:

Jana has a 2014 calendar too, nya! Carol Mantomer the Cave Girl, Kazanda of the Lost Continent, Gwen the Leopard Girl of Atlas Comics, Marga the Panther Woman, and Jean Evans the Panther Girl, nya!

Elizabeth:

Nyow for the absentee ballots! Myayr nominated Celeste Yarnall as Eve, Evelyne Kraft as Samantha in Goliathon, and Judy Graubart as The Electric Company’s Jennifer of the Jungle; and Jenjen nominated Dhalua & Tesla Strong, Tarzan’s wife Jane & niece Meriem, Seesha of the Fall People in The Savage Land, and Jane Hastings alias Jann of the Jungle!

Becca:

Yonny nominated Judy of the Jungle, Pamela of the Jungle, Rulah, Zara, Pantera Bionde, and Jungle Jo; and Tara-chan nominated Maya of Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, Christa of the 1992 Land of the Lost series, Veronica Layton of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, George of the Jungle’s Ursula, and The First Slayer of Buffy the Vampire Slaye!

Petra:

Trini-chan nominated Bettie Page, Irish McCalla & Dorothy Lamour as the the great Jungle girls!, nya! There is the astersk on the ballot, because she was curious if Hannah Dundee of Xenozoic Tales and Lady Adastra of Young Gods could be considered as the occasional jungle girls, nya!

Nyoka:

That is the good question! They have spent the time of the jungle for the expurrditions, but they do not purrmanently reside there, nya!

Nyanko:

It is the subtle distinction between the “jungle girl” and the girls who roam the forests, purrairies, and the other wilderness!

Bun:

Hai hai, Just the favorite forest elf & dryad girl pics would be the long list! You know, that “Book of Cats” by Demon Fart Cabbage which we reviewed in November is full of the cat girls of the various wilderness!

Becca:

Oh oh I want to include Frank Frazetta’s “Cat Girl” painting and Olivia de Beradini’s “Zebra Lady” painting!

Elizabeth:

I was  just thinking about some of those Amazons illustrated by Chris Achilleos!

Nyanko:

I am not sure if I could narrow down my favorite jungle girl art, nya!

Petra:

just think of the sheer vast number of all the comics, the covers, the purrints, the concept art, the animations and the collectibles, but that would be the good exhibit to curate, nya!

Nyoka:

Purrhaps we could ponder some of those for next month’s Lightning Round topic!

Mike

There’s a good thought! Well gosh, I guess that will conclude this month’s spotlight, and right on time too, because we need to go downstairs to the dressing rooms and change into more formal attire for the ceremony Hopefully the rest of the gang already here too!

In the Arboretum’s Plumeria Purrvilion…

Elaenor (or just Elie for short):

(the island’s Fire Chief centauress wearing the knotted White blouse, Pikaki Lei, and matching saddle bag / purrse) Wow y’all were great- I think y’all danced even better than y’all did at the last festival!

Jeannie:

(the belly dance instructor catgirl wearing the cabaret style Azure jeweled bra, hip belt, slit circle skirt, epawlets, cuffs & bracelets) Arigato, I am very purroud of my students and the dance troupe!

Trini-chan

(the belly dance student kitsune wearing the cabaret style Emerald beaded bra & hip belt, slit circle skirt, epawlets, cuffs & bracelets) We have been extra practicing the tummy undulation and the serpentine tail!

Tara-chan:

(her best friend hula student catgirl wearing the Golden Heliconia bikini top, grass skirt, Carnation Lei & Tuberose tail corsage) Our class has been putting in the extra hours on our story hands and – and the hip shimmy, nya!

Yvonne:

(her older sister purrcussionist catgirl wearing the Pink Wisteria purrint twist bandeau-top bikini & matching sarong around her hips) We took no chances with the mew costumes either and took the kittens to the Inn to visit the rest of their family, so that they would not be tempted to paw at the skirt, nya!

Mary Nyan:

(or just Myayr for short, the hula instructor catgirl dressed the same as Tara-chan) I hope the kittens have the joyful reunion, although you might think they got hold of the fabrics and the materials in my sewing room! It has been the might cluttered during the hectic week! By the way, thank you for holding on to our stuff during the purrformance!

Ellie:

Dooistashimaste!

Tara-chan:

Has Chief Ellie seen the pics of her in the mewseum, nya?

Elaenor:

I’m not worthy! Wahhh!

Trini-chan

(hands Ellie the tissue from the bag) The tissues!

Ellie:

I must write the thankful notes! (sniff) Um, so what have y’all been up to- oh and how was the trip to Raleigh?

Jeannie:

Inside Pitch’s Toy & Hobby Collector’s Show was at the State Fairgrounds on January 11-12th, with appurroximately 200 tables of mostly toys & cards. Our friends & past guests ob1, Chef Ron & Pacozord sold action figures & comic books. I purrchased the 5″ figure Torchwood’s Toshiko Sato, the 8″ figure of Bio Hazard’s Claire Redfield, the 5.75″ action figure of Supergirl in the White shirt & Blue skirt outfit, and the Hot Wheels 1/64 scale Herbie the Love Bug. Otherwise I have been busy with the kyudo club, the robotics club, the yoga studio, the dance troupe and the classes.

Mary Nyan:

Between the festivals, shows & purrformances we have been caravanning to the nippier mainland a lot of late. Mike and our past guest Kaiser joined us for “Shatner’s World: We Just Live in It” that Sunday night January 12th at the DECPA Memorial Auditorium! It is only about a couple of blocks from the Convention Center where we have attended Animazement, and the few miles from the fairgrounds! ! We had the great seats on front Row A very close to the stage! William Shatner was so very witty & entertaining as he told the jokes & stories with the photos & video clips!

The tales reflected the eras of his life from his purrents, childhood, motorcycle, college, theatre, TV roles, Star Trek & NASA to the romance, children, dogs, horses, record albums, Boston Legal & other appurrances! He topped it off by purrforming “Real” and it was such a delightfully witty one man, live show by such an iconic legend who will be 83 in March! Otherwise I have been teaching the Spurring Semester’s Hula classes, helping the other mikos the wee bit at the shrine, sewing the costumes for the dancers and the cosplayers, and looking forward to the next conventions!

Yvonne:

Hai I purrfur our warmer weather but it was fun to see the friends & shows, nya! When we have not been caravanning, taking the kittens to the reunion or rehearsing for the events, my charters have reeled in the bumpurr crop of the Bluefish, Groupurrs, Speckled Trout, Sea Bass, Snappurs, the Stripurrs & Tunas, nya! Soon it will be time to catch the Mackerels, Wahoos, and the Croakers, nya! It has been the fun & purrofitable catch, with plenty to donate to the food bank, nya! We have also found the time to relax with the comic books and the anime but I will let Tara-chan discuss that, nya!

Tara-chan:

When I have not been helping onee-chan with the boat or attending Myayr-sensei’s dance class, I have snapped more of the nature photos we have been volunteering at the mewseum, and – and watching the anime such as Lagrange – The Flower of Rin-ne anime season 2 nya! We reviewed season 1 in the August 2012 Mew, nya. It is about heroic Madoka the high school student who flies the Vox mech against the enemy invaders, nya! Her best friends are the alien pilot girls Lan and – and Muginami, who have their own Voxes named Orca and – and  Hupo, nya! However, they been busy for several unpleasant months since the 1st season, but on the opposite sides of the intergalactic war, so they need to reunite back at the lovely coastal town of Kamogawa, nya!

Also returning are the crew of the huge naval vessel the Pharo, Madoka’s older cousin Yuko who studies the mysterious ancient stone slab; the alien scouts Kirius, Izo, and – and Array who have become quite fond of the Earth customs and – and work at the Uncle’s cafe of the yummy cuisine, nya! There is Machiko – sensei, the other students, Asteria and – and Mold the alien advisors, King VIllagulio, Purrincess Yurikano and – and the mysterious Rin-ne purresence, nya! I purrticularly liked the epurrsode in which the Jersey Club recruits the younger student Reiko, and – and I like the bonus comedy shorts too, nya! ! It is such a beautiful anime with the great characters, designs, art, animation, voices, and – and the mewsic, nya! Nyow it is Trini-chan’s turn, nya!

Trini-chan:

Hai! We have also been watching the Girls and Panzer anime! It is about the girls of the high school military tank club, who compete against the other school teams in the tank war games! The main characters are the team of Miho the commander, Saori the radio officer, Mako the driver, Yukari the loader and Hana the gunner in their Panzer IV tank! The tanks are real and the cannons really do fire the projectiles, but they use the special safe type of the ammo and the special armor with the the sensors to determine the hit damage, so I would compare it to the paint ball or the military re-enactment of the mechanized type, but of course with the competing vehicles, there are the possible dangers like you might find at the races and the rallies, but it is the thrilling peppy fun anime!

Ellie:

I  saw American Hustle which was the comedic drama set in the late 1970’s, as the con artists in the marital trouble work with the FBI agents to perpetrate the sting job upon criminals & politicians, but the plans & relationships spiral out of control! It was written by Eric Singer & director David Russell, and stars Christian Bale as Irving the con man, Amy Adams as Sydney his girl friend & con partner, Jennifer Lawrence as Irving’s wife, Bradley Cooper as Agent DiMaso, Jeremy Renner as The Mayor! it has the soundtrack full of the great songs too, so it is one of my favoritest movies of the past year! Aside from that and my job, I have been reading, hiking, swimming, working out, watching the college basketball, and looking forward to our next archery competition!

Tara-chan:

Oh oh speaking of the reading I have been meaning to ask Chief Elanor about her favorite centaurs of the comics, nya!

Ellie:

Oh, well I have certainly been enjoying Himeno of A Centaur’s Life and Cerea of Monster Musume, and some of my all-time favorite heroines are Bruna of Stinz, Ursula of Ironwood, Chex of Return to Centaur, Allison of The Wotch, Samantha of Accidental Centaurs, and Fred Diana’s Scenturus! I was also amused when Dawn became the centaur for the while in Buffy Season 8, and the time when Superman’s girlfriend Lois Lane was temporarily transformed!

Yvonne:

Oh I read the Buffy comic, but I have not read the Lois comic! How did that happen?

Ellie:

In Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane #92 published in 1969, Lois and Comet the supurr horse had the adventure in the desert, but they had to deal with the meteor and the evil magician! He turned her into the centaur and then into the full filly of the Chestnut coat, and then she got caught in the round up! I can bring y’all that issue if y’all would like to read it!

Tara-chan:

Arigato, nya!

Mary Nyan:

Oh oh that reminds me, I recently heard on the State of Things radio show the intermew with wonderful mewsician Heather McEntire, who mentioned the Chiron centaur inspurration!

Nyow please let us welcome our friends Tash Maw, Michi Tiger, and Sadiyah from Alexcia Reynolds’s http://www.sailorchristmas.com Cybernetic Showdown http://michi.byethost16.com tales to purrsent the noms for our favorite

Toys & Collectibles, nya!

Tash:

(wearing a pale Lemon Yellow Creme sarong) Well, we’re here again, with a new friend of Michi’s. Sadiyah is a deaf belly dancer, who feels the beat with her feet when she’s on stage.

Michi:

(wearing an Orange Creme and White 4-Piece Jasmine Genie Belly Dancer Costume with the Black – striped matching Isis Wings purrrop) And she’s teaching me how to dance and how to use sign language modified for the blind.

Sadiyah:

(signing in American Sign Language, and wearing the purredominantly Purrple 4-Piece Jasmine Genie Belly Dancer Costume with the Blue highlights & Isis Wings) As they said, my name is Sadiyah and I’m a deaf belly dancer. It’s a long story for another time. I haven’t been traveling with them for very long, but it seems to me that Tash and Michi have a family type relationship going on. Somewhere between mother & daughter and sisters/sibling rivalry.

Michi:

Aheh… of course, I’m Michi, and this is Tash. (points in general direction of where Tash is standing) Sadiyah will be helping us interpret / sign our catty-gory for the Awards.

Tash:

Without further adieu… (nods to the telepurrompter and places a few pages of braille writing on the podium before Michi)

Michi:

(signs to Sadiyah) You ready?

Sadiyah:

(nods & signs ‘yes’ into Michi’s hand, before looking towards the telepurrompter)

Michi:

The favorite toys and collectibles of 2013 include…

Tash:

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic posable figures & mini figures, and the Kawaii Crush Cuddly Pet Collection!

Michi:

From what information I gathered, I probably would crush one of those cuddly pets in a big hug since they’re so cute.

Sadiyah:

(signs) You would. But then so would I.

Michi:

(purretends she didn’t feel Sadiyah’s hands when she signed that… but still sticks out her tongue in a silly little raspberry) The Nendoroid Petit Vocaloid Series 01 Hatsune Miku trading figures, and Kotobukiya’s Marvel Bishoujo Kitty Pryde figure!

Sadiyah:

(continues to sign) I’d love to have Kitty’s powers, even if it’s for a little while.

Tash:

I would too, if I could trade in my wings.

Sadiyah:

(softly snickers before signing the next nominees) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Tauriel action figure, the Thundercats Classic Cheetara Mega- Scale action figure, and the Batman Classic TV Series Catwoman action figure!

Tash:

I semi-remember that series. Loved it when Eartha Kitt was Catwoman – especially when she purred.

Michi:

I thought you hated the amount of pleather she wore?

Tash:

That was Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. Eartha Kitt’s Catwoman wore an outfit that I think was mostly a spandex / velvet blend.

Sadiyah:

(signs) How many different Catwoman actresses were there?

Michi:

Too many in my books.

Tash:

(shakes head and rolls eyes) Next up is from Monster High – Catrine DeMew, Catastrophe & Catty Noir dolls, and the Momiji x Hello Collection’s Kitty Aya & Kitty Kipi Message doll!

Michi:

Speaking of Hello Kitty, there are the Hello Kitty Plushy Dolls for Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween & Christmas; and the Hello Kitty Magical Mini Plush Dolls of Kitty as the mermaid, faerie & the princess!

Sadiyah:

(signs) Hallmark’s The Little Mermaid “Ariel’s Dream” & Peter Pan “Tink Takes a Tumble” ornaments round up the nominees!

Michi:

Hmm? (finger scans the braille papurrwork) Huh…. Ah, due to choosing difficulties, all nominees seem to be too top notch to choose just one winner!

Tash:

That seems to be the case with several of the catty-gories! And now, here are Petra & Bun of the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art who will purrsent the nominees for our favorite

Art & Entertainment Books & Calendars!

Petra:

Nyow for more computer cattygory, we will welcome our our purrducer Mike, and our web master Jamie who is also the creator of Clan of the Cats to discuss the

Our Favorite Video Games of 2013, nya!

Mike:

(in a tux) Do you remember back in the May 2008 Mew, when we were here right after the renovations, and Lizzy was chatting with you about The Beatles?

Jamie:

(in a tux) Yes, that was outside in the outdoor Azalea Ampitheater! By the way, you know, It was 50 years ago when The Beatles first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show!

Mike:

Man, that’s right! We’ve reviewed a few Beatles toys & DVDs, and you’ve kindly reviewed a few video games too! So what is our verdict for the games of 2013?

Jamie:

2013 saw a gaming head into an even more cinematic realm with outstanding titles like Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us. Both titles were also noteworthy for strong female characters that fight alongside the protagonist. In Bioshock Infinite the player is thrust into an air city set in 1912 and submerged in early 20th century Americana. The object of the game is to find and rescue Elizabeth, a young girl held prisoner in the city for most of her life. Above being a standard first person shooter, the appeal of Bioshock Infinite is look and feel of the city and the rollercoaster-like gameplay.

Mike:

What about The Last of Us? Doesn’t that have a zombie apocalypse?

Jamie:

The Last of Us also tells the story of a man trying to save a young girl, Ellie, who is now humanities only hope after a mutated strain of fungus has turned much of the US into zombie-like creatures. Again, the gameplay itself is standard, but what sets The Last of Us apart is the story and the characters.

Mike:

I understand that there were some alien invasions too!

Jamie:

Oh yes. X-Com: Enemy Within, was a 2013 DLC follow-up to the 2012 game X-Com: Enemy Within. X-Com: Enemy Unknown is a strategy game based on a game of the same name from 1994. X-Com: EW is the follow-up DLC and is a turned based strategy game set in a not too distant future. Aliens have invaded the earth and the player controls a secret military organization that must stop them at all costs.

Mike:

How does that one play?

Jamie:

Playing as the “Commander”, the player must send off squads of men and woman trained in four basics modes of combat. The gameplay is challenging and soldiers will die often, especially on harder levles. Unlike most DLC X-Com: EW adds barely any new story elements, but what it does add changes the gameplay quite a bit. A PC mod called “Toolbocks” adds even more, allowing more customization of the squad and thus making the player care about them more.

Mike:

I seem to recall that in the 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider, the threats were more of the normal human, animal & environmental variety?

Jamie:

Yes, the 2013 Tomb Raider was a fun action – adventure game which owed more to the likes of Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed than the series it was based upon. In Tomb Raider the player is archeologist / explorer Lara Croft, but unlike the original Lara Croft, this version of her is untested. She is not the double pistol packing heroine of the 1990s and early 2000s, but rather a vulnerable yet resilient individual who must learn to survive by her wits alone.

Mike:

What was the prognosis?

Jamie:

Tomb Raider could have at least benefited with a hard mode in which Lara actually had to eat and sleep every once in a while. A mode where ammunition or a flame of some kind isn’t around almost every corner. However, Tomb Raider’s biggest flaw is that the story is so linear. Outside of combat and what weapon she uses, the player is never asked to make a choice for Lara’s path and that seems out of place in a story about survival. Then again, Tomb Raider was never about choices. It’s about adventure.

Mike:

By the way folks, Jamie here is also the web master of Femshep http://femshep.ning.com which is a fan site dedicated to the female version of Mass Effect’s hero Commander Shepard! So perhaps you could comment on last year’s Mass Effect: Citadel DLC?

Jamie:

It’s fair to say that Mass Effect’s DLC, Citadel is about 95% fan service and adds many features that the fans had clamored for since the end of ME3. One of the highlights of the pack has (female) Shepard and Garrus doing the tango. Citadel is a bit of a compromise as it gives a very hopeful yet bittersweet conclusion to the content before launching the player back into the main game and to experience one of the worst levels of the game and its controversial ending.

Mike:

So what’s the verdict?

Jamie:

It’s as if BioWare had intended for players to stop playing after Citadel if they wanted a happy ending to Mass Effect 3 (or even a coherent one). If viewed as a goodbye to the beloved characters of the series and Shepard herself, Citadel is more than worth it and is why it ranks as my favorite game of the year!

Mike:

Wow, well that’s definitely big step up from that controversial ending! Speaking of endings, I reckon that’s all for this cattygory, so what’s up next, pal?

Jamie:

Next are Yvonne and her younger sister Tara-chan of The Mew to present the nominees for
