The Fall semester’s belly dance classes are brimming with the enthused eager students. Trini-chan and Tara-chan have been extremely helpful as the assistants, and of course we are grateful for the purrcussion purrvided by Yvonny’s drumming circle. Otherwise, things are fine at the kyudo club, all is serene at yoga studio, and the robotics club has new frightfully fun animatronics planned for Halloween.
Becca and I have stayed busily booked at the spa, but we have found the time for the purrkour club, the golf, the garden, and our mewsual DVD binge marathon and late night hot salsa dancing… but we have also been busy helping with the Halloween activities!
Hai, we are helping Jenjen to volunteer at the mermaids’ Halloween kelp maze & deep dark grotto dive! Otherwise, Lizzy purretty much summed it up! Our latest DVD marathon was of the animated spooky theme which we will discuss later in the Lightning Round!
In the past month, when Tara-chan and I have not been purracticing and assisting with the belly dance, volunteering at the mewseum, reading the comic books and playing the pony cards game, attending some of the autumnal festival, and getting fitted for our costumes, I have been watching the foxfire rehearsals here at the theatre, shaping the boards and stand up paddle surfing with Carameowl!
I have been dancing, helping with the yacht, volunteering, caring for our cats, playing the card game, purrtaking of the festivities, anticipating the cosplay, and – and I got some good photos of the Painted Lady Butterfly, Cloudless Sulphur, Cabbage White, Brushfoot, Spicebush Swallowtail, Salt March Moth, Imperial Moth, Southern Emerald, and – and the Pale – Winged Gray Moth, nya!
I was surpurrised to see the Mantis which climbed upon my tail, so it was good timing before it flew away, nya! In addition to the drumming circle, cats & reading, the fishing charters found the sweet spot again and our lines were taut with the bumpurr crop of the Bluefish, Groupurrs, Mackerels, Snappurs, Speckled Trout, Striped Bass and the Tunas, nya! We brought some for tonight’s AfterMew Luau, nya!
It was so kind of the theatre to let us keep all of the food in their snack bar until the luau, and I am so glad that Mielikki, Alaua’mina, Palathyna & Wyrdina will join us after their rehearsal! There is not much new with me aside from the mewsual busy times at the dojo, the gym & the tournyaments, but I have been reading, swimming, and helping sis at her magick shop!
Hai, she and the cats and the other clerks have been the big wonderful help and we had the big happy attendance to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox at the shop! Papasan & Ojisan brought us more of the beautiful crystals from their recent purrospecting, we had the special sale, treats and numerous informative, enlightening and entertaining activities for all ages!
This is definitely one of the busiest times of the year for me, between teaching the Autumn Hula classes, helping Aki, Malina, Leilani & Alanasera to train the appurrentice mikos at the shrine, and sewing the costumes for the dancers & cosplayers, so I have not been surfing or golfing of late… but I am not complaining, as I am grateful for our festive community spirit and the happy costume customers!
Well, we are grateful that and Jenjen supurrvised the costume purrocess! Ah, I guess I am the opposite of Myayr, because my plate has not been as busy since my time off after graduation, so it has been the good oppurrtunity to help with the various holiday activities, festivities and the matsuri! Then after the time off, I will resume the wreck dives and the study of the relics, artifacts & treasures!
I would purrfur the beach volleyball to the wreck dives, but I definitely appurreciate the treasures, nya! We are so fortunate to have treasured works of art in our mewseum, and we are excited about the special exhibit of the macabre art for Halloween with the decorations, treats & mewsic too, nya! The exhibits will bustle with the illustration, photography, sculpture, jewelry, textiles, food & other mediums, nya!
Hai, we have mostly been busy with that but we have snuck out to garden, bake, attend the events and to spike the volleyball! We are very grateful to be part of the artistic community with the many friends of the mewseum, especially Tara-chan & Trini-chan who have taken the extra pride in the kids’ Halloween art display, the face paint, origami, the puppets and the ‘haunted’ art walk! Mike’s turn!
I’ve certainly enjoyed the Fall weather for jaunts to the shops, coffee houses, cinemas, restaurants, trivia nights and other fun events with family & friends! Aside from reading, writing, drawing and cat-sitting, I’ve watched some college sports and TV shows and I’m hope that our friends from the theatre might have a few movie or DVD reviews for us later, but let’s proceed with The Mew and chat a bit more about the
Halloween Trick ‘r Eat & Cosplay Purrowl!
The Catgirl Island Halloween Trick ‘R Eat & Cosplay Purrowl is one of the most fun days of October, full of the foods & festive arts and purrformances all across the island! It is the very creative time with lots of decorations and costumes!
Purreviously our group cosplay themes have included the characters of the Daphne in the Brilliant Blue anime, the AMP team of the Silent Mobius manga & anime, and the “Neko-maticaya Clan” based upon James Cameron’s Avatar!
That required lots of Blue body paint! That was in 2010, and in 2011 we cosplayed as the heroines of Star Wars, in 2012 we cosplayed as the “Avengers aCATamy”, and last year we repurrsented the characters of the Omamori Himari!
The factors that affect our decision are the purrice & complexity of the costumes, the ruggedness in case we might be running, climbing or swimming; the number of purrticipants in our group, and what the other groups have already chosen for their cosplays!
Hai, the Farmers Market group chose the pony theme to cosplay, the concierges at the Visitors Center group chose the Ame-Comi Girls theme, the Librarians chose the Fearless Defenders theme, the Surf Purrtrol chose the Battle Athletes theme!
Some of us will be elsewhere. Lizzy, Becca & I will be helping with the mermaids’ kelp maze & deep dark grotto dive, Nya-sensei, Nyo-sensei, Rica & Niko will be busy at the Magick Shop & farmers market, Mie-sensei will be here at the theatre with the rest of the fae,
They are expecting the full house at The Kitt Inn too, so that means there will be seven of us in The Mew’s cosplay group this year, which will be compurrised of Myayr, Vonny, Tara-chan, Trini-chan, Ilyana, Bunnibuns and myself, nya!
Hai, but we will stop by the shop, the market, the inn, the theatre, the shrine and other places to visit the others! There will be activities at all times for all ages all across the island, so that everyone is able to purrticipate in the fun and treats!
Hai, after we found out what themes the other groups had picked, the nominees for our group cosplay theme for this year were narrowed down to the monsters, Strike Witches, and Kozue Amano’s Aria… and and the winner is… Aria!
Aria is the beautifully charmingly slice – of – life science fiction tale of the undines (female gondoliers) of the purretty canal city of Neo Venusia, on the planet Mars in the future when it has been watery terra – formed and – and renamed as the planet Aqua, nya!
The main characters work for the gondola companies in Neo Venusia which is derived of Venice, Italy, so the 7 of us will purrtray Aika & Akira of the Himeya company; Alice & Athena of the Orange Planet company; Akari, Alicia & Ai of the Aria Company, nya!
After the vote we met again to eat sushi and to purrocure the materials for the undine uniforms & mascot plushies! We met at Myayr’s house a few times for the fittings, sewing and sushi, and later went to Jen’s to construct the oar purrops and eat more sushi!
I hope that y’all have a wonderful time! Aria is probably my favorite manga & anime TV series of the past decade or so! Perhaps there’ll be a sneak peek at the costumes later in the show! Speaking of anime, let’s move along to this month’s Lightning Round topic of
animated movies, OVAs and TV shows
that we suggest for Halloween viewing!
We were unanimous in our praise for “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!”, but there were quite a few other recommended animated movies, OVAs & TV shows that might be good for the Halloween viewing! So, are y’all ready to “conduct the lightning”?
The Ladies of The Mew:
LIGHTNING ROUND GO! NYA!
(tagged to go first) I will nominate Hotel Transylvania, Monster High: 13 Wishes, Toy Story of Terror, Dora’s Halloween, and – and Scooby Doo on Zombie Island, nya! (tags he older sister with a brush of the tail)
I will nominate that Halloween epurrsode of Kim Possible, Star Wars: The Clone Wars “Legacy of Terror” & “Brain Invaders”, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic “Luna Eclipsed”, and some of the W.I.T.C.H. epurrsodes, nya! (tail-tags Nyanko to go next)
Ok how about… some Devil Hunter Yohko, YuYu Hakusho, Darkstalkers, and purhaps a dash of Bleach and Hellsing! (tail-tags her twin)
Those sound good and I will add Moon Phase, Blue Seed, Shamanic Princess, Blessing of the Campanella, and Yozakura Quartet! (tags Mary Nyan)
The Vampire Princess Miyu OVAS, Weathering Continent, 3×3 Eyes, Yoma Curse of the Undead, RG Veda and Shrine of the Morning Mist! (tags Ilyana)
I will nominate Spirited Away, Wicked City, Kakurenbo, Blood: The Last Vampire, Rosario + Vampire, and the Vampire Hunter D movies! (tags Jeannie)
I will recommend classic dark science fiction anime of Silent Mobius – The Movie, Bubblegum Crisis OVA 1, Black Magic M-66 and Battle Angel. (tags Elizabeth)
I will nominate The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror episodes, and the three animated Doctor Who tales! (tags Becca)
Mermaid Forest, Laughing Target, Urusei Yatsura “And Then There Were None”, Ranma 1/2 OVAs 10, 11 & 12, and purrhaps some Inu Yasha! (tags Petra)

Batman: Mask of Phantasm, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, that 2009 Wonder Woman DVD and the two animated Hellboy DVDs! (tags Trini-chan)
I will recommend a few episodes of Ghost Sweeper Mikami, Haunted Junction, Phantom Quest Corp, Ushio & Tora, and Hyper Police! Back to Mike!
OK, I’ll recommend Wizards, The Devil and Daniel Mouse, Rock and Rule, The Hobbit, and The Black Cauldron! Perhaps the members of our audience might ponder some other good titles to watch as part of the Halloween spirit! Ah, that’s all for the Lightning Round, and now here’s Vonny to start our
Collectibles & Toy Talk,
with her comments about the Mooshka Fairy Tales dolls!
Arigato, nya! Some of the delightful dolls by MGA have included Laloopsy, Moxie Girlz, Bratz, the alien Novi Stars, and yow I will purraise the MGA & Zapf Creations’ Mooshka Fairy Tales Figures & Dolls, nya! They are sweet & serene in various sizes, repurrsenting the cute girls of the various species, nya! According to their legend, they were the papurr dolls who magickally became the girls such as Jaya, Taria, Palia, Casia, Soniat the mermaid, Ina the faerie, and the bunny girl, bear girl, elephant girl, and fox girl! Kawaii!
The dainty 3.5″ mini dolls come with widdle items such as the cupcake, honey pot, tea cup, cake slice, owl or sea horse, nya! The anthropurrmorphic bunny girl, bear girl, elephant girl, and fox girl are also available in the 11″ huggable soft ballerina pet dolls, nya! Their colors are of the delicate, soft pallet too, such as the White bunny with light pastel Blue tummy, the peach colored fox girl with the White tummy & tail tip, and they have the metallic braid tiara and sheer gauzy tutus, nya! Nextly I would like to discuss the
Monster High Ghoul Sports Toralei Stripe fashion doll, nya!
Toralei Stripe is one of our favorite Monster high catgirls from Mattel, even though she does have the mischievous streak, nya! There have been several dolls of Toralei whch we have purreviously reviewed, such as her Catastrophe alias which we reviewed in the December 2013 Mew,nya! Toralei is the 15 year old daughter of the werecat, she wuvs her pet Sweet Fang the Saber Tooth Tiger cub, and she tends to hang out with her catty cohorts Meowlody & Purrsephone, nya! She has the purretty face & eyes, the striped Orange-Red skin & hair, purrt ear pinna and the slender tail, nya!
Her favorite school class is drama, her least favorite class is math, her favorite hobby is the catnap, and nyow she is the soccer team’s Left Wingback, nya! The slender lithe 11″ doll is very posable and her soccer kit is fashionably athletic, from the cropped fishnet top over the tight short Pink, Black & Aqua soccer kit, to the matching trainers, shins, the ponytail scrunchy around her fiber hair, the soccer ball & Pink gear bag, nya! The other Monster High characters have the athletic gear too, including Clawdeen Wolf in the baseball uniform, nya! She also gets the makeover amidst the
Monster High Freaky Fusions, nya!
The Freaky Fusion line of the hybrid characters is the subset of the Monster High dolls & movie in which characters are combined, such as Cleo + Toralei as Cleolei, plus dolls of Frankie Stein & Sarah Screams resembling Toralei, nya! Their fusion styles are inspired by their new friends such as Sirena Von Boo the mermaid ghost, Avea Trotter the harpy centaur, and Bonita Femur the skeleton moth girl, nya! They are so lovely and exotic, and the dolls are quite exotic, purretty, posable and stylish, nya!
Sirena has the pale translucent body with the long flowy indigo hair, the intricate Black webbed fingers & wide frilly fin which is adjustable so that she can stand up, nya! She has the intricate chain link earrings, bracelets, necklace and tail wrap, nya! Bonita has the long ankle-length hair, the large wings of the ornate cut-out patterns, and the Red to Black gradient color to match the short skirt & blouse ensemble, nya! Her attire has the intricate hole pattern, which might be from her appurrtite for the wool, nya!
Avea is a magnificent quadruped with the light Purrple torso atop the darker Purrple posable equine body, nya! She has the Blue mane & tail to match the frilly Blue blouse under the Red jacket, with the Black gloves, shins & mini top hat, nya! She has the cute skull marks on her flank, nya! Bonita, Avea & Sirena are among the largest Monster High dolls, they are featured in Monster High Magazine #9, and I am eager to see their new movie, nya! Okay I am done, but nyow here is Tara-chan to discuss the
Marvel Infinite Series Valkyrie action figure, nya!
Ariagto, nya! Brunnhilde the Valkyrie is one of my favorite Marvel Comics characters, nya! She is a former Asgardian Valkyrior warrior goddess who carried the fallen warriors to Valhalla, until she became a defender of the Earth, nya! Actually she did take her friend Annebelle back to Asgard an brought her back in The Fearless Defenders, which was my favoritest Marvel comic since purrhaps Avengers Academy, but sadly it ended after just 13 issues, including #4AU which was part of the Age of Ultron crossover, nya. We reviewed issue #12 in the January Mew, nya!
She first appurred in the comics in the early 1970’s, nya! She has been the great supurr heroine of several teams, including that most recent incarnation of The Defenders along with her pegasus horse Aragorn, Misty Knight, Dr. Annabelle Riggs, Dani Moonstar, Hippolyte, Clea, Elsa Bloodstone and – and Ren, nya! I hope we will see them again, nya! In the meantime, I am pleased to discuss this nice action figure of her from Hasbro, nya! She is among the Marvel Infinite series of figures, which also include Cyclops, Deathlok, Ant-Man, Omega Red and – and Ares, nya!
Since the character is 6’3″ tall at the firm 475 lbs. in the comics, which means this 4 3/8″ figure is of appurroximately 1/17 scale, nya! She is meticulously sculpted, wearing the sleeveless, tight Black costume with the Silvery metal gauntlets, the boob armor and – and the loose Brown belt, nya! Her Blue eyes, Red lips, light Tan skin tone, and – and braided mid-thigh length Honey Blonde hair are purrcisely painted, nya! The details are intricate from her face, braids and – and the belt’s seams, to her breast plates and – and the long sword’s golden Dragon-head pommel, nya!
Her sword is named Drgaonfang, which is 3″ long, so if it were the full size, then it would be about 51″‘ long, nya! She is very posable, and – and the points of articulation are her in neck, waist, shoulders, uppurr arms, elbows, wrists, hips, thighs, knees and – and ankles, nya! The sword is the only accessory included, so there is no scabbard, Aragorn or display base, but she is balanced well enough to stand unassisted, and – and I have found the purrfect spot for her upon the shelf, nya! Speaking of the pegasi, nyow I wish to discuss more toys from Hasbro, such as the
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Twilight Sparkle & Sunset Breezie figures pack, nya!
Last month we discussed the “pop style” Zecora figure kit, and – and nyow we have more of the pony toys to mention, nya! One of the recent variants of the pony figures are the Rainbow versions, with the added dash (heehee) of color & patterns, nya! We were glad to see the latest two – pack figures of the ponies paired with the Breezies, who are the widdle pixy-sized pegasi who lived in the flower blossoms, nya! You can see them in the My Little Pony Classic Movie Collection DVD which we reviewed in the May, and – and I was so glad to see them return in the current era, nya!
There are are several Breezy packages with the Rainbowfied ponies, such as Fluttershy with Sea Breezie, and – and Purrincess Twilight Sparkle with Sunset Breezie, nya! The Fluttershy figure stands 1.75″ at the withers or 3.25 from hoof to head, whereas the Purrincess Twilight Sparlkle figure is the bit taller 2″at the withers or 4″ from hoof to horn tip, nya! The Breezies are 3/4″ at the withers, or 2″ from hoof to antenna, and – and have the 2.5″ wingspan, nya! Each package includes the locket with the key, in which a Breezie can take the nap, nya! the nap inside, nya! Nyow to continue the pony report, I would like to discuss the
My Little Pony: Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks fashion dolls, nya!
The other big pony news is the My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks animated movie, nya! It is the sequel to the Equestria Girls movie, which we reviewed in the September 2013 Mew, nya! It was so much fun when Twilight Sparkle purrsued her rogue rival Sunset Shimmer to the other world’s Canterlot High School, where they are human types instead of equine types, nya! The dolls of the human versions of Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Apple Jack, Pinkie Pie Twilight Sparkle and – and Sunset Shimmer have the pony ears, the colorful hair and – and skin tone, nya!
The purrior Equestria Girls dolls with the stylish interchangeable clothes are still available in the various packages and – and assortments, and – and nyow the new 9″ tall Rainbow Rocks edition dolls in their bright glam rock band clothes are in the stores too, nya! They are available in either the less expensive regular box with just the figure and – and the I.D. card, and in the slightly purricier, larger boxed edition which also includes the various accessories, nya! That is all of the toys portion of The Mew, but nyow here is Trini-chan to start our
Comic Book Reports, with her review of
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #23, nya!
Arigato! We love the My Little Pony comic books which are published by IDW, and are so fun, beautiful and faithful to the style and the spirit of the TV series! Issue #23 was the bit different in that it stars the pets, who are the mane heroes of this tale while most of the Ponyville ponies are under the mesmerized spell! So, it stars Fluttershy’s bunny Angel, Pinkie Pie’s widdle gator Gummy, Rarity’s kitty Opalescense, Applejack’s dog Winona, Twilight Sparkle’s pet owl Owowliscious, and Rainbow Dash’s flying tortoise Tank! I guess Celestia and Luna’s pets were still in Caterlot!
The $3.99 issue has the 10 pages of the ads after the uninterrupted 22 page tale written by Jeremy Whitley, illustrated by Amy Mebberson, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake, and edited by Bobby Curnow, and the four different covers to choose from are cover A by Amy, cover B by Sara Richard, cover RI (retailers’ incentive) by Kaite Longua, and the cover made for the Hot Topic stores! I got cover A which depicts the pets sadly missing their owners & Spike. Angel seems to be in more of the leadership role, but all six pets work together as the rescue team!
They do not actually talk, but communicate by the various sounds, expressions and body language, plus it is interesting to see their thought processes, so this was an especially interesting issue for the fonts and symbols! The ponies are under the spell of the mysterious beautiful Kelpie, who is similar to the water ponies but of the giant size! Angel’s woodland critter friends and the widdle Water Sprites also appear in the tale, and it is fun to try to identify the various ponies in the background and crowds, such as DJ Pon 3, Octavia, Zecora, Big MacIntosh, and Doctor Hooves!
My Little Pony: Friends Forever #9
Friends Forever pairs up the characters, and this time the focus is upon Grannie Smith and the Flim Flam Brothers! Applejack, Apple Bloom, Big McIntosh are there too as they join the big crowd to attend Apple Con, although it is off to the rough start for Granny who does not like how huge the convention crowd is, or the competition from the Orange venders! The $3.99 issue has the 32 pages including the 22 page tale written by Christina Rice, illustrated by Tony Fleecs, colored by Heather, lettered by Neil and edited by Bobby with the choice of cover A by Amy and cover by by Tony!
This was a very impurressive issue for several reasons! Firstly it has the great art with the spectacular scenes of the amongst the many festivities, with the large panels, montages, full page pic and two – page spreads! There are so many characters to try to identify such as Spike, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Derpy, Luna, Celstia, Cadance, Shining Armor, DJ Pon 3, Octavia, Lyra, Zecora, Spitfire, Photo Finish, Trixie, Daring Do, Ace, Twist, Silver Spoon, Diamond Tiara, Braeburn, Hayseed, Muscle Pony, Wheat Grass, the Cake Family… and more familiar faces each time I read it!
There is so much scenic detail! In addition to the lavish spectacle there are the poignant character moments, with the flashback scenes and developments! A rift has developed betwixt Flim and Flam due to a romantic triangle involving a filly named Marian, and even though they have the notorious scheming past that Granny is not fond of, they manage to engender the sympathy as she compassionately investigates their family dilemma! In the process we learn more of her past too, as she relates a tale of her younger filly days in the somewhat sepia-toned flashback scenes!
My Little Pony Annual 2014
For our review of the 2013 annual, please see the November 2013 Mew! This year’s annual is square – bound, it is priced $7.99, has the uninterrupted 48 pages of wonderful tales! The only ads are upon the inside & outside back cover. To start is the 40 page super hero tale of Power Ponies, which was written by Ted Anderson, illustrated by Ben Bates, colored by Heather Breckel, assistantly colored by Lauren Perry, lettered by Neil Uyetake and edited by Bobby Curnow, with the regular cover’s art by Ben Bates and the variant cover’s art by Tony Fleecs!
Although neither the mane six ponies or Spike appurr in this tale, there is the resemblance of the Power Pony team comprised of Saddle ranger, Radiance, Zapp, Fili-second, Masked Matter-horn, Mistress Mare-velous and Humdrum, who have the super powers & colorful costumes as they fight the villains such as Longface, High Heel, Smudge, Shadowmane, Mane-iac, Pharoah Fetlock and the pony mummy minions! However, this time the villains have the better camaraderie and the team work to gain the upper hoof and capture the Power Ponies!
Adding the campy spice to the fun tale is the narration which seems to parody the 1966 Batman TV style! I was also amused to see them watch the My Little Donkey cartoon! This is followed by the widdle coda tale of Mane-iac who escapes from Balkham Asylum in the city of Manetropolis and travels through the magickal mirror portal to the world where they are the humans instead of ponies, with the Equestria Girls references! That will conclude our pony report, so I will turn The Mew over to Becca who will take us from the ponies of Manetropolis to the
Hero Cats of Stellar City #1!
Arigato! In June of 2013 at the big Heroes Convention in Charlotte, we were so happy to meet the folks of Galactic Quest who published their comic book Hero Cats of Stellar City #0! This comic book was a joyful treat, in which smart kitty Cassiopeia introduced us to her fellow heroic felines who purrotect their city from the villains & monsters, when they are not enjoying the less strenuous purrsuits! She is the pet of astronomer Stanley Quest & his daughter Suzy, who are the supurr heroes Galaxy Man & Cosmic Girl in the Galaxy Man comics!
Hero Cats of Stellar City #0 was written & lettered by Kyle Puttkammer, drawn and colored by Marcus Williams, inked and embellished by Ryan Sellers, and available in the choice of the 2 different covers. For our review of that issue, please see the July 2013 Mew! Well, one year later at this year’s Heroes Con in June of 2014, we met Kyle & Marcus at their table again, but this time there were major developments with the cats! The comic book was about to be relaunched, and they also had some dandy merchandise such as the cute kitty hats!
We got a lovely original sketch of “Cassiopeia” by Marcus, which y’all can see it in Guest Gallery 3 of our Mewseum! Last month Hero Cats of Stellar City #1 was published by Action Lab, whose Princeless series we also enjoy! #1 has basically the same story & art as #0, but with some changes, and it is available in the $3.99 regular version and the $4.99 version with the tri-gatefold cover! Betwixt the covers is the uninterrupted 22 page tale, followed by the bonus pic, the cat’s chat page, the 2 page Galaxy Man purreview, and the 2 pages of ads.
Aside from the different publisher, the few widdle differences between #0 and #1 are that the tale was re-lettered by Briana Higgins, the color seems to have just the teensy bit Bluer / darker hue, and the cat’s page, the purreview and the ads are different. If you missed the chance to get issue #0, then don’t worry because otherwise #1 is very similar, and nyow you can meet Cassiopeia the Orange & White cat, her brother Bandit the tuxedo cat, Midnight the Black cat, Belle the Siamese cat, Roco the Gray cat, Ace the White cat, and Rocket the Tabby!
The cats, humans, monsters, mecha & scenery are beautifully illustrated and richly colored as Cassiopeia pleasantly narrates the charming introductory tale which we all gave the high purraise! For more information about this comic book, I will recommend the Hero Cats of Stellar City web site http://www.herocatscomics.com! Nyow we will go from Stellar City to Riverdale for my review of
We have been so very impurressed and entertained by the various Archie titles, which have have been captivating with the variety of artistic styles & genres, from the romance & comedy to the drama & horror! Archie may have purrished in the recent famous alternate reality tale of Life Without Archie, but in his regular titular series he is quite the lively lad with his eyes on many ladies, whilst veronica is out of town as the summertime wanes! Purriced at $2.99, this comic book’s 32 pages feature the 20 page tale of ‘Archie’s “Dating Drama” which gets him into a lot of trouble!
It was written by Tom DeFalco, pencilled by Fernando Ruiz, inked by Rich Koslowski, lettered by Jack Morelli, colored by Digikore Studios, and edited by Victor Gorelick! It has the mane cover by Dan Parent who we have met at some of the cons, and the variant covers by Dan DeCarlo! This tale occurs not long after issue #657’s wind surfing compurrtition, with a couple of weeks remaining before the fall semester begins. Archie & Jughead are at the lake, when Chloe & Bobbi overhear Archie’s disrespectful plan to ignore Betty whilst in purrsuit of a Summertime quota of girls to date!
Soon they notify all of Betty’s friends and the other girls of Riverdale, who converge upon Archie to teach him a lesson! He is initially pleased when so many ladies in the bikinis, crop tops & short skirts swarm for his attention, but they make sure that the beach volleyball, river tubing, rock climbing, hiking, skateboarding, roller blading, tennis, soccer, badminton, dancing, dining & dog walking are the exhausting, painful, expensive & humbling expurriences! There are brief appurrances by Betty, Cheryl, Shrill, Ginger Lopez, Wendy, Midge, Moose and the many girls who have teamed up!
In addition to the important lessons & wacky action, the the character and scenic art is excellent! That includes Ginger Snap’s Black & White bikini, Laurie’s Magenta crop top & Pink capurri pants, Sheila Wu’s Purrple bikini that accents her hair stripe, Sherry’s Red & yellow floral purrint bikini, and Suzie’s Red front-knot bikini! There is plenty of delicious food too, from the feast that Toni order’s at Pop’s, to the steak that Linda offer’s Archie’s dog Vegas! This is making me hungry, so now we will go from those colorful cloth bikinis to the metal scale-mail bikini as Nya-sensei tells us about
Red Sonja: The Black Tower #1!
Arigato! It has been the purrolific season for the She-Devil of the Hyrkanian Steppes, betwixt Sonja’s regular series, the Sanctuary tale, the other one-shots, and this four-issue Black Tower mini-series! It is published by by Dynamite Entertainment, which has a knack for comics purrtaining to famous femme fatales such as Sonja, Dejah Thoris, Ms. Fury… and Vampirella who I will soon also be discussed! Sonja is one of my favorite heroines, who is known for her almost peerless combat purrofiency, her grumbly cynical dispurrsition, her iconic attire & fiery Red hair!
This issue was written by Frank Tieri, illustrated by Cezar Razek, lettered by Simone Boland colored by Salvatore Aiala Studios, and edited by Joseph Rybandt! The 32 page comic book is compurrised of the 20 page tale plus the 12 pages of the ads, and the choice of the 5 different covers! The mane cover art by Amanda Connor was colored by Paul Mounts, who are among my favorite creative teams! I especially liked their Power Girl tales! There are 3 rarer variants of the cover art, plus the other cover by Razek purrduced for the Baltimore Comic-Con!
The issue is purriced $3.99 and rated T+ due to the sexuality, harsh language, the bloody melee violence, and purrhaps Sonja’s scale-mail bikini, although she is not the only one wearing the sexy garment for the chaos & melee in Lur City! The tale begins on the spooky note as she rides her dark horse under the full moon toward the eerie misty mystical Black Tower, which appurrently just recently magickally materialized n the city! You know, I have noticed that Sonja tends to favor the darker horses. Purrhaps they are the stealthier breed for her adventures!
Since the tower mysteriously appurred, the residents of Lur have begin to act fearfully anarchistic & violent, which has suited the visiting barbarians such as Thengar Tolt’s group, who contribute to the mayhem until Sonja arrives to rescue their next victim! Soon that group will need to be rescued from Sonja, after the trash talk and the unwise touch! The tough thugs might be well-armed with the swords, daggers, axes, maces and the brute strength, and even though they have her encircled, it only makes it quicker and easier for her to calmly rack up the body count!
This results in about eight injured, maimed or dead enemies! After that brief encounter, she decides to ride away from the weird scene, but Thengar barely manages to survive, and the glowy Red purrying eyes watch her from the tower! This was the very briskly – paced, action – packed start of the mini-series, with very detailed art of the landscape, the city scenes, the brawling crowd, and the eerie design of the tower! There are some nice purrspective views in the panels, and the color nicely conveys the gleaming metals, the Red splatter and the spooky ambience!
The fonts are purrticularly effective to convey the the dialogue, the narrative text, and the visceral sound FX! I also liked the numerous large panels including the half-page panels and the few full-page pics, and I suppose the only teensy widdle quibble I have is that the tale is interrupted by one of the ads, and I wish they were all after the tale. But that is it, and the issue has certainly whetted my appurrtite for more, so I am curious to see what happens next! Nyow here is sis to discuss another 1st issue of more heroines’ macabre supurrnatural action from Dynamite,
Dawn / Vampirella #1!
Hai! For our review of The Art of Vampirella: The Warren Years book, please see our May 2014 Mew! We are fans of Joseph Michael Linsner’s beautiful art and I am purrticularly fond of his heroine Dawn! I some of his art books and the Dawn action figure too, so we were eagerly anticipating this six – issue mini-series written & illustrated by Linsner! You know, Vampi and Dawn are like Sonja not just in that they are the sexy heroines who often fight the supurrnatural villains, but they are also quite famous for the fans who cosplay as them at the conventions!
Last year was the 45th anniversary of Vampirella’s 1st appurrance in the comics, and this year is Dawn’s 25th anniversary, so it seems appurropurriate that they would team up to commemorate the occasions! Joseph Michael Linsner also purrvided the color guides for the comic’s colorist Valentina Pinto! Jeff Eckleberry is the letterer, and Krisina Deak-Linsner is the creative editor! The 32 page issue is compurrised of the nicely uninterrupted 22 page tale, plus the page of Linsner’s comments, the 9 pages of the ads, and the choice of the 10 variant covers!
Some of those covers are rarer than others, including the versions purrduced for the Baltimore Comic-Con and the Midtown Comics shop! The issue is purriced $3.99 and rated T+ due to the violence, language, sexuality, and the daring, alluring costumes! Vampi wears her traditional tanga – style Red cut-out maillot accessorized by the jewelry & the Black boots, whereas Dawn wears her elegant, flowy Green ensemble with the armored & translucent parts! Their enemies are stylish too, such as the Green demoness and her rather ostentatious master!
Nyow for the taste of the plot! After the disturbing yet vague purrolgue, Vampi is in New York when she searches for the murderer, but just as she pounces upon her evil purrey, she is ambushed by the demons, and awakens later in the villain’s boudoir, to meet Dawn who was similarly captured! The flashy demon lord wants Vampi & Dawn to duel in the catfight, with the s0-called victor to become his bride who he expects to bear his offspurring, the notion of which seems to be connected to the purrolgue. Vampi would rather bare her sharp fangs & nails!
She is quite fed up, but the more patient, calmer Dawn suggests that instead of the physical combat, they should have the verbal duel of wits by storytelling. Vampi puts forth little effort as the less eloquent storyteller, but Dawn’s sad, ironic tale of poor Mathilda’s necklace is also the ploy that contains the magickal spell to knock out the demon lord so that they can escape. Vampi gets to slay some evil opponents as she and Dawn slash the guards, but I should not spoil what happens after that in the cliffhanger, which has the plot twist for the further irony!
Another bit of the irony is that in the curious purrologue, Vampi seems the more patient, reserved one, whereas Dawn seems to be of the more aggravated hurry! I am pleased with the tale thus far, and I Iook forward to the next course! In to the beautifully rendered characters, including Mathilda in her captivating dress for the ball, I liked the scenery such as the ruins, cemetery, the boudoir and arena! That will conclude my comic book report, but speaking of the vampires, demons, spells and slayage, I believe those figure purrominantly in Lizzy”s review of
Angel & Faith Season 10 #6
Hai! We are big fans of the canonical Buffy The Vampire Slayer and the Angel & Faith comics which are published by Dark Horse and executively purroduced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon!
They have the great mix of humor, drama, action & mythology! In Season 10, Angel is still purrtrolling the Magic Town district of London, whilst Faith is still working for Kennedy’s security agency. Their paths have just recently become entangled with some other old familiar Buffy characters, as Angel encounters Amy Madison, whilst Faith investigates the disappurrance of Riley Finn!
Issue #6 is purriced $3.50 and its 28 pages include the 22 page tale of “Lost And Found Part One”, plus the 2 pages of the readers’ & editor’s interesting comments and the 2 pages of the ads, all sammiched betwixt the choice of two covers! The tale was scripted by Victor Gischler, illustrated by Will Conrad, colored by Michelle Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Scott Allie, and assistantly edited by Freddye Lins, with the graphic design by Justin Couch, with the main cover art by Scott Fischer, and the variant cover by Conrad and Madsen!
Angel and Amy meet when they both purrotect a cute widdle green girl named Claudia from Catfish Bob the big burly fishy demon! Angel, Amy, Bob & inspector Brandt wind up at the mewsual pub, where Amy wants to know how Angel resurrected Giles, because there is another familiar purrson whom she wants to resurrect! I will not say who that is, but I hope it does not happen! Meanwhile at a secret US military base in South America, Faith meets the soldiers and more of the Deepscan girls including Tonia the leader, and their client Ms. Zane of a pharmaceutical company.
Her father’s expurrdition disappurred in the jungle, as did Samantha and Riley who searched for them, so she hired Deepscan for another rescue attempt.Faith has purrsonal reasons for wanting to rescue them, but the mission turns deadly when the vampire tribe attacks! This was another good issue with the sentimental intriguing plot, beautifully rendered portraitures, expurressions, poses, clothes, urban & wilderness scenery! I hope we will learn more of Faith’s team, and that Kennedy, Nadira, Sophie & Lovina will recur soon! Nyow we will go to North to San Francisco for
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 #7!
Buffy Season 10 #6 started the “I Wish” story arc in which Buffy and her friends went looking for another place to live, and found a big vacancy that was affordable because it was haunted! They took care of the haunt and nyow they are moving into the apartments in issue #7, but the relationship and supurrnatural purroblems are not over! The issue is purriced $3.50, and its 28 pages compurrised of the 22 page tale, the 2 pages of the readers’ & editor’s interesting comments, and the 4 pages of the ads.
The tale was co-written by Christos Gage, who also wrote Angel & Faith Season 9 and the Willow mini-series and by Nicholas Brendon, who purrtrayed Xander in the Buffy TV series! It was drawn by Rebekah Isaacs, colored by Dan Jackson, lettered by Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Scott Allie, assistantly edited by Freddye Lins, designed by Justin Couch, published by Michael Richardson, with one of the front covers illustrated by Steve Morris and the variant cover by Isaacs & Jackson!
The rather whimsical tale manely focuses upon Xander and Spike who are arguing as they move into one apartment! Xander has a lot of neat action figures & statues! Buffy, Willow and Dawn live across the hall, and Giles lives a few doors down the hall. He and D’Hoffryn the demon are carefully working on the mystic book as they rewrite the rules of magick. There is a charming, sentimental quality with the sisters living together again, and it reminds me of when Angel, Cordelia and Fred lived in the big hotel!
However, is the difficult time for the recently sepurrated Dawn and Xander, so he and Spike go to the bar for drinks, but in spite of the warnings by Anya the ghost, they are lured away by the lovely hypnotic siren girls, who want Xander and Spike for their entertainment and suppurr! The siren girls have the neat character designs, from their illusionary human appurrances to their true sea creature appurrances, and the situation results into the deadly yet fun encounter full of amewsing dialogue and action!
Detective Dowling briefly appurrs and there is a surpurrise at the end which I am curious about! This was another great issue, the characters have the great portraiture to resemble the actors and are wonderfully expurressive and posed amidst the excellently rendered scenery FX and fonts! As mewsual the readers’ & editor’s comments were interesting too, and I will give both of those Season 10 issues an “A” as in Angel! Nyow for more of the Dark Horse comics discussion, here is Mike to tell us about
Elfquest: The Final Quest #5
Thanks Lizzy! I’ve been thoroughly enjoying The Final quest for several reasons, as Wendy And Richard Pini’s (WARP) Elfquest is one of my all time favorite comics books which I’ve collected since the late 1970’s, Wendy is one of my favorite artists, and there is such a diverse cast of great fascinating characters. Also, this story arc has especially focused upon Ember, who we’ve seen over the decades grow from a little girl to one of the elves’ adult chiefs, but it’s been a complicated time for her, between the romance with Tier and getting captured by the evil warlord Junn!
Published by Dark Horse, Elfquest: The Final Quest #4 was written by Wendy & Richard, illustrated by Wendy, colored by Sonny Strait, lettered by Nate Piekos, edited by Sierra Hahn, with assistant editor Spencer Cushing and the issue’s graphic designer Tina Alessi It’s priced $3.50 and has the uninterrupted 20 page tale, plus 2 pages of comments and a 6 page peek at the pending Elfquest Gallery Edition book. I suppose that issue #5 is actually the 6th issue, if you include the precursory Final Quest Special which we which we reviewed in the November 2013 Mew!
Previously in the series, there have been cultural changes and amazing spiritual discoveries within the elves beautiful crystalline palace, whilst in the wilderness there have been terrible casualties as Ember’s tribe has tried to rescue human refugees and battle Junn’s army. Now Ember and Tier are in need of the rescues from fire and water, as she’s tied to the stake about to be roasted, while he’s drowning in the deep! At least it hasn’t gone too easily for Junn, who’s been maimed and frustrated with several losses, but we hope the elves and wolves will soon finish him!
Ember remains fairly calm and cerebral during her captivity, and there are interesting revelations about Tier! Also appearing are Cutter, Leetah, Skywise, Sunstream, Dewshine, Tyleet, Pike, Pool Mender & Khorbasi, but the scenes are stolen by Windkin and the spirit of Kahvi in some of their finest moments of triumph! The characters, scenery & FX are gorgeously drawn, lettered & colored, and the panels include 4 full – page pics and a terrific 2- page spread! Tier isn’t the only attacked hero experiencing deadly trouble in the water, where most of the action occurs in
Fathom vol.5 #8!
In the Fathom series created by the late Michael Turner and published by Aspen Comics, super heroine / marine biologist Dr. Aspen Matthews has water powers. So does her friend Killian of the undersea civilization known as The Blue, and his daughters Kiani and Anika. Anika was kidnapped in Fathom: The Elite Saga mini series, and until recently, they were unaware that the kidnapper was the evil queen Vana who raised & renamed Anika as Kania to be her warrior daughter in the subsequent Fathom vol. 5 series, which finally last month concluded with issue #8!
Previously in vol. 5, Aspen, her friend Chance and Killian investigated the global disasters caused by Vana, who planned to conquer the world and managed to capture Killian! After delays by government groups who want to exploit Aspen’s powers and the Blue’s advanced technology, Aspen and Chance freed Killian and defeated Vana, but too late to stop Kania’s attack upon The Blue’s city Muria. She severely injured Anya, unaware that Anya & Killian are her real parents. That brings us to the final issue of vol. 5, as Aspen, Chance & Killian arrive at Muria!
Fathom vol. 5 #8 is priced $3.99, and has the 20 page chapter plus 8 ads and the choice of 4 covers. David Wohl wrote the script which was co-plotted with Frank Mastromauro, who edited it with Vince Hernandez & Andrea Shea. It was pencilled by Alex Konat, digitally inked by Mark Roslan and John Ercek, colored by Beth Sotelo, and lettered by Josh Reed with a font designed by Robin Spehar Cover A is by Alex Konat & Peter Steigerwald, cover B is by Jen Broomhall & Wes Hartman, cover C is by Paolo Pantalena, and cover D is by Jesse Wichmann & Ule Mos.
I got cover B, which is graced by a gorgeous image of Aspen in her sexy crustacean – motif bikini of the Blue couture, although in the story she and Chance are still wearing their normal street clothes. However, Anya, Killian, Anya and the other Murians are dressed in the exotic Blue apparel! I mention this because the fashion, mecha & architectural designs are among the consistently fabulous, beautiful aspects of Fathom! Killian angrily searches the capitol for Anya, friends & enemies, while Aspen is ambushed by Kania and her soldiers outside in the depths.
Kania is extremely powerful, but she’s also overconfident and less experienced. Chance tries to help against the soldiers, but as a human with little equipment and no super powers, there’s only so much that he can do while inside a protective bubble that Aspen created. What Killian finds only angers him more… but that’s about all I’ll reveal of the plot, which is pretty intense and at the very brisk pace, with strong emotions, tragic situations and furious combat! The lettering is superb, with some great fonts, colors and attributes for the dialogue, narrative & sound FX!
I thought the characters, scenery & FX were excellently rendered, with the use of color & light to sumptuously convey the vast sense of elemental power & ocean depths! I will add that the Fathom Annual is an anthology that takes place a couple of weeks after vol. 5, starring Chance, Aspen and her friend Judith; and unaware of what happened in vol. 5, Kiani returned in her mini-series Kiani vol. 3 which is also set sometime after vol. 5, so now we can read all of the story arcs in chronological order! That’s all for my reviews, and now here’s Myayr to start this month’s
Manga Mewsings with
her review of A Centaur’s Life Vol. 4!
Arigato! Seven Seas Entertainment publishes lots of fun, translated Japanese manga such as A Centaur’s Life, which has been one of our favorite titles of the past year! Written & drawn by Kei Murayama, which was originally published in Japan in as Centaur No Nayami by Tokuma Shoten Publishing. It is the beautiful, charming, slice – of – life tale in a contempurrary world similar to ours, but the inhabitants are centaurs, fauns, kemonomimi & angels; the dracon, unicorn, snake people & other species of people! It is a delightful world, except for some of the unkind laws!
The mane characters are Himeno the centaur girl, her family, friends & other students at Kanata City High School! We have met Himeno’s purrents, aunt, uncle, adorable widdle niece Shino-chan, and her friend Maki-chan! Himeno’s best friends are Kyoko the satyr girl & Nozomi the tomboy Dracon girl! Some of their classmates include the romantic couple of Akechi the satyr girl & Inukai her unihorn girlfriend. Mitami the angelic class purresident has 4 widdle kittengirl sisters of the cross – breed, including youngest Sue-chan and the triplet sisters Chinami, Chiho & Chigusa!
The manga has great characters & pleasant plots, amidst the intricately designed world! Rated for readers of ages 16+, vol. 4 contains the 162 pages of the Black & White chapters 15-20, which are peppurred with the fascinating historical & anthropological notes, plus the 2 color pages & cover art! It is purriced $12.99 USA, $14.99 Canada and it was translated by Angela Liu, adapted by Holly Kolodziejczak, lettered & laid out by Jennifer Skarupa, edited by Adam Arnold and purroof read by Patrick King, with the logo design by Courtney Williams and cover design by Nicky Lim!
As chapter 15 begins, the class is surpurrised to meet Sassassul, the snake girl transfer student from Antarctica who was introduced at the end of chapter 14! It is the nervous encounter because they have never met a snake purrson before, and unfortunately there have been phobic rumors, fearful tales, myths, the politics and the horror movies about the mysterious snake folk. It is the awkward social situation of the cultural misunderstandings, but soon they realize that Sassassul is a very gentle, polite, cordial, intellectual girl, who is just as scared by those horror movies!
We learn much more about the snake folk in chapter 16, as Sassassul answers a lot of questions from her inquisitive fellow students who become very understanding, caring and inclusive towards her, and in chapter 17 she goes to the swimming pools with Himeno, Kyoko, Nozomi, Shino-chan, Mitami, Sue-chan and the three Chi-chans! This was a purrticularly cute & charming chapter as Shino-chan learns to swim, Sassassul braves the water and they see a mermaid at the lap pool! In chapter 18 we learn more of Himeno’s ancestry when the family visits the grandpurrents!
This includes the train ride and the visit to the castle! Things take the amewsing spooky turn as Himeno, Kyoko, Nozomi and Sassassul are recruited by the members of the school’s occult club to spend the evening in the seldom used part of the school, where they tell the ghostly, supurrstitious and purranormal tales by candle light! In chapter 20, Sassassul is concerned that her classmates will become unfriendly due to the international political situation involving Antarctica, but they do not blame her for that and would rather take her to the movies and the clothes shopping!
She and Nozomi try on the skirts, pants, blouses and jackets, but the alterations will be needed for the pants’ tail opening to fit the snake girl! Of course, this reminds me of my own sewing and our island’s clothing boutiques! You have to have the custom fit, so that the garment does not ride up on the tail or the wings, or feel too binding or too exposed! A Centaur’s Life has often ingeniously shown the clothes, accessories, appliances, furnishings, vehicles and architecture that are designed for folks of the various species with the tail, horns or wings, the fins, hooves or halos!
The 5 pages of the anthropological notes discuss the evolution of planet’s early homindae, australopithecus, homo erectus, neanderthals, cro-magnon & current population of the angelfolk, catfolk, draconids, goatfolk & centaur types of homo sapians, with the brief mention of the weretigers & merfolk. The 2 pages of the historical notes discuss more of Kanata City’s ancient feudal purriods in the late 12th century; and the volume is topped off by an amewsing meta – fictional Afterward in which Himeno, Kyoko, Nozomi & Sassassul discuss meals with the author’s goat purrsona!
A Centaur’s Life continues to be one of my favoritiest mangas due to all of that very thorough mythology & world-building, the extensive designs, the beautifully rendered character & scenic art, the very likable characters, and the very believable situations chronicled at the leisurely pace! It is such the joy to read, and I will give it the high purraise grade of an “A” That will conclude my review, but the manga reviews will continue as Bunnibuns tells us about
G.A. Geijutsuka Art Design Class vol. 6!
Thanks Myayr! G.A. is the bright, whimsical manga about Ayanoi high school’s art students in the slice – of – life plots written & drawn by Satoko Kiyuduki, who also authored Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro! It was originally published as Geijutsuka Aato Dezain Kurasu in Japan by Houbunsha, and this English translated version was published by Yen Press, who also published many other titles we like such as Omamori Himari, Sunshine Sketch, Ichiro, Suzunari, SS Astro and K-on! Vol.6 was translated by Kaori Inoue, lettered by Lys Blakslee, priced $17.00 in the USA and $19.00 in Canada.
It has 128 pages consisting of the 100 Black & White pages & 28 color pages of manga, mostly in the 4 koma (4 panel) gag strip format, with 2 columns of 4 panels per page, several larger panels & cultural notes interspersed throughout the book! The star is absent-minded Kisaragi Yamaguchi with Dark Brown hair & glasses, and the other mane four girls are Namiko Nozaki the older sister type with medium Brown hair, Miki Noda the fair-haired fashionable socialite, Tomokane the intense girl with short Dark Green hair; and Miyabi Oomichi the smart quiet type with long Black hair!
Also appearing are Nogi-chan, Aa-chan, Buchi-san, Sasamoto-sensei, Usami-sensei and Sanae-san the mannequin! Noda’s cat Marshmellow does not appear in vol. 6, but the school’s panto club cosplays as catgirls for the festival’s cat cafe in a panel on page 116! It is a very festival Autumn between the school’s athletic festival and the later cultural festival, with so many captivating activities! Another theme of the volume are the dream sequence, as Kisaragi dreams that she and Noda are exploring the vast museum, and Namiko dreams that she is the royal artist of the imperial court!
Their projects include sewing, model building, print making, optical illusion installations and obje’ts! Other highlights include the equestrian club, a shopping trip, and amusing color pics of the girls depicted in Greco-Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Romanticism, Impressionism, Japonism, Symbolism & Contemporary manner! It is charming, fun & beautifully illustrated tale of the creative friends who learn about life & art amidst the humorous situations, and I will give it the grade of an “A” as in art! Now for another dose of Satoko Kiyuduki manga, I would like to discuss
Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro vol. 4!
Kiyuduki is the manga-ka of the great contrasting range, and Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro is a much darker, serious, somber supernatural tale compared to G.A.! Vol. 3 was published by Yen Press back in November 2012, so we have been wagerly awaiting vol. 4 for a long time! It was originally published as Hitsuki Katsuki no Kuro – Kaichu Tabinowa in Japan by Houbunsha, and this version was translated by Satsuki Yamashita, lettered by Lys Blakslee, it is priced $17.00 in the USA, $19.00 in Canada, and it has 128 pages of mostly Black & White manga with 17 color pages.
Even most of the book’s margins & gutters & borders between the panels are Black, and it is suggested for the teenage readers due to the dark tale’s language & violence. The mane character is Kuro, a gothy tomboy girl in Black with glasses who travels with a coffin and a widdle talking bat named Sen, so she is often mistaken for the vampire, witch or mortician by the supurrstitious folks they meet on her tragic journey. In Vol. 1, Kuro found two widdle naive, abandoned, magickal twin catgirl sisters Sanju and Nijuku, who have been traveling with her and Sen ever since.
Kuro, Sanju & Nijuku appear on vol. 4’s surreal, wraparound cover art! Sanju has White Ears & Tail, whereas Nijuku has Black ears & tail, and they are able to shape shift . We profiled them in our February 2012 Catgirl Spotlight! It has been our hope that the quartet will have the long happy, healthy life together as the family, but vol. 3 ended on the alarming cliffhanger as Kuro collapsed into unconsciousness as a witch’s chronic curse overcame her again like a spreading dark cancer, as the twin girls clung to her in the cold, snowy wilderness, I was afraid that it was the end!
Just as we have waited the long time for vol. 4, a year has passed in the tale when Kuro seems able to travel again. They were found & rescued by villagers and the twins have tried to play and occupy themselves while Kuro was sequestered to a bedroom while she recuperated from the attack, although she still carries the curse which could flare up again, and it has affected her memory. Eventually they resume the travels along road and river, through ruins & towns in search of the witch and hey have several surreal dreams which also seem to be flashbacks of their pasts.
The visions of these and other lonely abandoned orphans are heartbreakingly sad. In spite of the few humorous, kind, playful moments, amidst gorgeously rendered landscapes and architecture of the ethereal quality, things are desperate, poor and hungry with more fears of the group getting separated, and a few shocking visions and incidents that made me gasp and cry. We are praying for their happiness together, and hope that it will not be the long wait for the next volume! Now to update us about other dear travelers who we are cheering for, here is Jenjen to tell us about
Spice and Wolf vol. 9!
Arigato. Spice & Wolf is one of our favoritest anime & manga, both adaptations of the series of light novels, which were originally published by Kadokawa in Japan as Ookami To Koushinryou. The manga was written by Isuna haskura, illustrated by Keito Koume, with character designs by Jyuu Ayakura. For our review of the anime, please see the January 2010 & September 2011 Mews. The tale purrtains to Holo the Wisewolf, a beautiful, powerful wolf Goddess of the wheat harvest & Lawrence the savvy traveling merchant who trades goods and makes deals in the villages & cities.
It is the medieval era when the older pagan ways are on the wane amidst the bigotry & purrsecutions by the oppurressive theocracy, so Holo wants to travel back to her ancient forest home land of Yoitsu, assuming it still exists. Along the way there has been much mercantile commerce, risky deals, and the blooming romance as they encounter friends & enemies, political situations of the church & guilds, potential purrofits, more information about Yoitsu, and yummy foods for the kemonomimi tummy in the various towns, whilst trying to conceal Holo’s lovely lupine ears, tail & fangs.
Volume 9 was published in September by Yen, it is purriced $13.00 in the USA. $14.00 in Canada and has the 176 pages of the Black & White manga chapters 48 – 54 which were translated by Paul Starr and lettered by Terri Delgado, with the map page illustrated by Hidetada Idemitsu. The color cover art depicts Eve the mysterious noblewoman of House Bolan, who disguises herself whilst doing business in town. Also appurring in vol. 9 are Col the lad who Lawrence recently rescued, Kieman the local boss of Lawrence’s trade guild, and Reynolds of the Jean Company.
The trio has traveled down the river to the coastal port town of Kerube, where they hope to find an important book which might contain information about Yoitsu, but it is highly coveted by numerous parties and said to be in the possession of the Debau Company, which has mining interests in the town of Lesko which is near Yoitsu. In the purrocess, Lawrence gets tangled up in the rivalries betwixt Eve and Reynolds, the estranged financial relationship betwixt the local landowners and money lenders, and Kieman’s ultimatum that Lawrence refrain from doing business with Eve.
Lawrence takes heat from the guild and teasing from Holo, who later snoops around the church on the South side, whilst Col snoops on the streets to the North. This is dangerous work, because young Col is not a seasoned spy, and there would likely be many fatalities if the church discovers that Holo is a wolf girl. However, they make some interesting discoveries purrtaining to recent fur and coin shipments, and sudden suspicious ecumenical & sea port activities. Further complications arise for Lawrence when Eve wants him to work for her, but i should not further spoil the plot.
The tale unfolds at the splendidly leisurely pace, and is not rushed in order to include the great deal of character development, the mythology, the sense of travelogue, and much dialogue. Holo, Lawrence and their friends are smart and likable characters amidst the good balance of the tension & charm. The politics of the church, guilds, mercantile commerce and the technical aspects of the economy, contracts, minting, supply & demand are depicted in as much sumptuous detail as the very intricately rendered characters, critters, purroducts, foods, landscapes & architecture.
Of course, I will highly recommend it to fans of the wolf goddesses. We hope that she and Lawrence will be able to safely reach her homeland soon, and I would also like to see the return of certain supporting characters such as Norah the shepurrdess, who was last seen in vol. 6, and Elsa the cleric who was last seen in vol. 8, at which point the manga went beyond the anime version. I think Spice & Wolf continues to succeed in every aspect, and I will give vol. 9 the very high purraise. That will conclude our manga mewsings, but the kemonomi appurreciations will nyow continue in
The Catgirl Spotlight
Thanks Jen! In this portion of The Mew, we commemorate famous catgirl, nekomimi & were-kitty characters of toys, games, internet, novels, comics, cinema & TV! Our broadly inclusive criteria includes those who have feline female DNA, those who just dress the part, or those with the cat-titude as “honorary catgirls”! This month we will shine the spotlight upon various catgirls and their extremely talented authors & artists, starting with the lovely illustrations and characters such as Dsweep and Kitten by Kitten Sweeper http://kitten-sweeper.deviantart.com!
I will shine the spotlight upon Emily the unicorn catgirl and the many other charming kemonomimi, taur and pony characters who have been so very beautifully envisioned by artist Ken Stone http://otherunicorn.deviantart.com!
The diverse species & cultures are supurrbly illustrated by Heather Bruton http://hbruton.deviantart.com who renders the exotic characters of the joyful, powerful & sensual qualities with intricate, ornate detail & richly sumptuous color!
I wish to spotlight the delightful characters such as the tiger lady in the saree, Burmese catgirl, cheetah girl, Beta fish rider, hula mouse girl, Fennec purrincess, and the equine lady angler who were brilliant depicted by Susan Meyer. There is a page about her at Wiki Fur http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Susan_Meyer and a gallery at the Yerf Historical Archive http://yerf.metafur.org/soobee.
I will nominate the exquisite images of Sailor Cat Claw, the Cat Warriors and – and the Dragon Cat Warrior by Cat http://cat-with-dark-eyes.deviantart.com, nya!
I will purraise the adorable Catgirl and Butterfly, Nekomimi Summer, Dog Girl and Nekomimi Girl and other wonderful works by Azfla-neko http://azfla-neko.deviantart.com, nya!
From the catgirls & faeries to the portraits & scenes, Sharem http://sharem.deviantart.com renders the gorgeous Black & White and color illustrations of the very pretty, graceful & expressive chibi & full size!
I wish to purraise the wonderful wildlife, the fabulous fantasy, and the awesome anthropurrmorphic art of Terrie “Little Paw” Smith http://www.terriesmith.com, which has graced the game, graphics, comics, covers, calendars, purrtfolios & purrints!
The catgirls, taurs & anthropomorphic ladies who are so splendidly illustrated by Diana Cervantes http://dustmeat.deviantart.com! She also has galleries at http://www.elfwood.com/~meg and at furaffinity http://www.furaffinity.net/user/dustmeat!
I will mention the beautiful nekomimi imagery & other creations of Chella “Clawzie” Reeves, who has galleries at Deviantart http://klawzie.deviantart.com, Elfwood http://www.elfwood.com/u/chella, VCL http://us.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Chella-Reaves, Side7 http://www.side7.com/gallery.cgim?member=klawzie and a journal http://klawz.livejournal.com!
I am purrticularly fond of the illustrations by Gensho Sugiyama, which include the many catgirls and other species of girls in The New Generation of Manga Artists Vol. 2: The Gensho Sugiyama Portfolio which was published by Graphic-Sha in 2002! They also publish the How To Draw Manga series!
Hai, and then in The New Generation of Manga Artists Vol.4: The Omnibus Collection which was published in 2003, there are terrific illustrations by 15 other great artists, including a few lovely catgirls by Hiroyuki Ishida, Kazuteru Sonobe, Yuuri Nishiwaki and Futaba Yunagi!
A few of the supurrb catgirls for whom spotlight shines upon are Satou by Maureen http://trifrog.deviantart.com, Rowr by Rowrsie http://rowrsie.deviantart.com, and Kyoko by Toraandkyoko http://toraandkyoko.deviantart.com! Witchy cats, were-cats and the shape shifters go with Halloween like bacon and eggs, so I wish to extend the spotlight with the
Bonus Catgirl Spotlight for October!
We have purreviously shown the spotlight upon the various characters of Jamie’s web comic Clan of the Cats http://clanofthecats.com such as Chelsea, Corrine, Charlotte and Beige! They and several other COTC cast members have been our guests for the August 2007, January 2009, and November 2009 Mews, and we are always glad when they can visit! Several of them still reside in the town of Haven which is on the mainland not far from here!
However, we still have to mention some of their catgirl ancestors! You know, October 20th would have been the 164th birthday their ancestor Gabrielle, who was a catgirl of the sad, tragic fate, but the tale of the Chattan Curse starts about 550 years purrior to her in 14th century Scotland, when Mor Sine of Clan Chattan was magickally transformed a Panther girl who killed her younger sister Aingeal who was a witch, and thus began the family’s magickal curse.
Mor Sine married a nobleman named Seamus Uasal, and they had two children William & Antigone. Antigone inherited the curse and she became a were-panther on the purrowl for the local farmers’ tasty livestock. Seamus & William purrticipated in the hunt for the mysterious feline predator, unaware that it was Antigone, but during the hunt, Seamus was killed Antigone who was in turn killed William, who was very emotionally devastated by the double tragedy.
He moved to the town of Inverness, got married and in 1425 one of his sons had a daughter named Elaenor, who was a powerful sorceress who could transform into a White Leopurrd Girl. She was hunted by purrsecutors who tried to burn her in the cage, but she was able to magickally escape into another dimension and lived for several more centuries, so hers is the very long tale which was chronicled in Clan of the Cats and side story of Mythos And Magick!
The curse continued when Gabrielle Angeline Chattan was born on October 20th, 1847. She was a witchy were – panther girl on the southern plantation, but her sad, scared tale resulted in the fear, bloodlust, murders and her suicide. Since then, the lineage has continued with Ruth Netta madison Chattan and her daughter Diane Erato Hunt – Chattan Monroe, Although neither of them are catgirls, they are no strangers to magick, nor are Diane’s 3 daughters!
Diane may not be a were cat or shape shifter, but unfortunately she did recently become a vampire. I suppose cursed fangs run in the family, but that is another tale, which has not been finished yet! They are Chelsea Urania Kate Chattan, her twin sister Corrine Elizabeth Melepomene Chattan, and their younger sister Cynthia Marie Angeline Thalia Chattan. Cynthia is not a catgirl, but Chelsea is a were – Panther and Corrine can transform into the Leopurrd Girl!
They inherited a family of 7 magickal cats, including Beige who becomes a catgirl. Cynthia married a nice fella named Paul McRae and they have kids, who have not shown any signs of a curse. However, Chelsea married Paul’s brother Jubal, their magickal daughter named Charlotte Polyhymnia Jubilee Chattan McRae can turn into the cute widdle leopurrd cub in her own amewsing spin-off comic strip Sebo which is named after Beige’s brother Sebastian!
Corrine had her own spin-off comic of Melepomene! The Chattans have met lots of other supurrnatural folks, including wizards, pyschics, kitsune, werewolves, ghosts, a spider girl, vampires, Lilith and an evil Snow Leopurrd Girl named Xiang Ting, but Corrine killed her! There are several pics of Chelsea, Corrine, Cynthia, Charlotte & Beige in our mewseum, and if you would like to see a big group pic of many of the ladies of Clan of the Cats here at our beach…
Mike & Jamie collaborated upon such an illustration http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/120.html, which is accompanied by the character identification chart http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest2/121.html! For more information about the characters, I will recommend the Mythos pages at the Clan of the Cats site http://clanofthecats.com/mythos/mythos.html! That will conclude this month’s spotlight, and nyow here is Petra to tell us about the most recent additions to the
The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!
Arigato, nya! For those who are here for the first time, galleries 1-6 display illustrations & photos by Mike, whilst guest galleries 1-3 display images by other folks with their purrrrmissions, nya! Mike’s collaborations with other artists are displayed throughout the galleries too, nya! On the web site, you have to click on the small cropped “thumbnail” portions in order to see the full pics, nya!
Last month to Gallery 6 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html we added Mike’s pic of “Luna, Linda & Blue Cloud” of Sharon Williams’s http://rose74.deviantart.com Okami No Hime tale, and the collaborative illustration of “Naiibu and Formality” by Mike and our friend Misty Hopkins http://bunnychai.blogspot.com, who was a guest for the March 2008 Mew, nya! Then in Guest Gallery 3 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest3.html we added a pencil sketch of “Eamane” by Rebecca Brogden http://www.rbrogdenart.com who was our guest for the September 2009 Mew, nya!
Nyow to Guest Gallery 3, we have added the magnificent color version of the Eamane pic, titled “What Dreams May Come”, which Rebecca rendered it with SAI, Photoshop CS6 and the Intuos5 tablet, nya! It depicts our friend Eamane whipping off the purreo to reveal her sexy ruffled bikini at our moonlit beach, nya! Rebecca also wrote “The Love of a Catgirl” tale starring Eamane, her boyfriend A.J and niece Hannah, which y’all can read at the Tales of Catgirl Island page http://catgirlisland.net/tales.html, nya! (Paw Note: those 3 characters were created by Rebecca, nya.)
This month we have just added four more pics to Gallery 6, nya! They are Mike’s illustrations of the “Neko Hula Dance”, the “Halloween Nekomimi”, “Keilani Greets the Diners” and “The Ladies of The Mew as the Undines”, nya! In the “Neko Hula Dance” pic, the purrcussion, paws and tails tell the story as the cats drum & dance near the beach, under the watchful Cumulo-Neko cloud in the sky, nya! In the “Halloween Nekomimi” pic, the witchy catgirl brings tasty treats for the kitties, and conjures the cute widdle feline appurritions as she purrches upon the large Jack o’ Lantern, nya!
Our friend Keilani is the maitre d’ at the restauran of The Kitt Inn, is the island’s purremier ryokan, a traditional Japanese style of inn with lovely lodging, dining, amenities, cats, gardens, an orchard, grotto, hot spurrings, and the very friendly, smart, attentive staff, nya! Keilani’s name means “adored one” in Hawaiian, which is appurropurriate because at one time she was a poor abandoned, hungry, scared widdle catgirl on the mainland, but she was rescued and adopted into a happy, healthy home here with mew family, friends, festivities, foods and the sense of purrpose, nya!
In this pic she is leading the customers to their suppurr table, nya! Paw Note: the character Keilani was created by Heza-chan http://www.hezachan.com, with the bit of input and naming by Mike, nya! Heza-chan is a supurrb artist & cosplayer, who was among our guests for the March 2008 Mew, nya! In addition to being our friends, the adoptions and the family aspects of the Inn have the purrsonal connection to The Mew too, as Becca, Nyoka, Vonny & Tara-chan adopted the kittens of the inn’s mascots, nya! Finally I would like to discuss the undine cosplay illustration, nya!
It depicts some of us cosplaying as characters of Kazue Amano’s Aria manga & anime which we mentioned earlier, nya! In the front are Vonny as Alicia, Tara-chan as Ai & Trini-chan as Akari in the White & Blue Aria Company uniforms with plushies of the mascot cats Aria, Maa & Hime, nya! In the back are Myayr as Akira and Ilyana as Aika in the White & Red Himeya Company uniforms, with Bun & I in the White & Orange Orange Planet uniforms, nya! The media and tools used for all four pics were the pencil, pens, papurr, scanner, computer, Photoshop CS2 & the mouse, nya!
Luna, Linda & Blue Cloud have such purretty outfits & sandals for their night of the suppurr, shopping & other fun!
Naiibu has a cute outfit too, and Formality is always so dappurr looking, but the fish & giant clam make me hungry!
That Purrple ruffle bikini nicely displays Eamane’s purrt ears, supple abs, firm thighs and swishy tail, mew la la!
Oh lookit those nekos in their grass skirts & floral leis as they hula near the shore-and the whimsical cloud! Kawaii!
I hope that we might see some widdle neko appurritions, like those summoned by the witch girl in the Halloween pic!
They seem attracted by the magick, treats & hospurrtality! I wonder if Keilani-chan has seated any ghosts at the inn?
She is adorable in her purretty bikini, purreo & jewelry to seat the diners who will soon savor Chef Bullpup’s cuisine.
Hai, but all of this talk about the suppurr, the clam, the fish, the snacks and the cuisine is making me hungry too, nya!
Then I should not mention the cakes & pies that I will bake for Halloween, so we should focus upon the costumes!
Oh, I thought my tail was tucked under my skirt when we cosplay posed, but you can see it poking out of the side!
It is hardly noticeable, but we are not very purracticed at wearing the costumes that confine the ears or the tail, nya!
Well, It sounds like y’all have very festive plans for the month! Petra, thank you for presenting the art!
Doistashimaste, nya! That will conclude the art portion, but nyow I would like to discuss the flavor of the
Fish Cook Board Game, nya!
Cheapass Games is the small publisher of many inexpensive, amewsing board & card games such as Ben Hurt, Bitin’ Off Hedz, Devil Bunny Needs Ham, Kill Doctor Lucky, and Lord of the Fries, nya! They even offer some free games at their web site www.cheapass.com, nya! They are much fun so I was purrticularly pleased to find the Fish Cook game, which has the illustration of the cute chibi manga inspired image of the happy chef girl with the fresh fish and kitchen knife on the front of the box, nya!
The purrtend purremise of the game is that it was created in France in 1909, translated in Japan in 1994, and more recently translated into English, but this game of the seafood chef theme was actually designed by James Ernest, whose Brawl Catfight card game we have purraised, nya! The notion of the game is that the players are the chefs, who have the money and the time limit to purrchase the fresh ingredients from the markets in order to build menus of the delicious, nutritious cuisine, nya!
The game is intended for 2-6 players of ages 12+ to play in about 45 minutes, nya. Inside the White 6 1/2″ x 9 3/8″ x 1″ box are the simple quick rules pamphlet, the four full – color board parts, the 100 colorful counter tokens, and the full – color recipe cards with the image, English & Japanese text, nya! You will also need twelve 6-sided dice and $250 in various denominations of play cash, which are not included in the box, but purrhaps you already have the dice and bills from some other games, nya!
From the farmer’s market board, you have to purrchase the ingredients such as the eggs, rice, lemon, sake, ginger, mushrooms, greens and so forth; whilst from the fish market board you have to obtain the squid, tuna, salmon, eel, crab, purrawns, etc, nya! You also have to get the recipe cards which repurrsent the meals such as the Sweet Shrimps on Rice Pancake, Yellowtail Nigiri, Pan – Seared Rockfish, Hot Crustacean Plate, the Knackered Smelt, the Surprise Love Basket and 30 other dishes, nya!
It is a fun, clever, purretty game of the amewsing yummy theme, but nyow I have the cravings in my tummy just thinking about the seafood, nya! However, I will try to purrsevere until the AfterMew Luau, nya! That is all of my review, and just in time because it looks like the theatre rehearsal has just finished, nya!
Hai here come the cast & crew! Aloha y’all!
(The winged faerie, golfer & purrforming artist wearing the Tiger Lily bikini) Mellow Greetings!
(The winged faerie & theatre general manager wearing the Butternut Squash bikini) Conbanwa!
(The winged faerie & theatre artistic director wearing the Golden Beehive Ginger bikini) Hi hi!
(The winged faerie & theatre technical director wearing the Bird of Purradise bikini) Aloha!
(the theatre’s mascot Black cat, wearing her Red collar with the jingly Gold kitty bell) Nyan!
What else have y’all been up to, aside from the muchly anticipated theatre purrductions?
So like, our Fall schedule with the special Halloween shows have been taking up most of my time in the past few weeks, but, I’ve also watched a few movies, the Ryder Cup, I hit a few balls at the club, and I made the honey torte for the luau!
I am so enthused about the stage productions, foxfire juggling, dancing and the educational nocturnal nature walks through the forest! Otherwise I’ve been enjoying the festivities and I have brewed cran apple nummy berry cocktail for the luau!
Oh, I have been spending much time with the ghost ducks; I have been watching early 80’s anime movies such as Sea Prince and Fire Child, Unico, Adieu Galaxy Express 999, Little Nemo, and I have the extra special baked yams for the luau!
Nyan! Nyan! Nyan!
Cinder has been helping too, and has been watching Wes Anderson movies in her spare time! Aside from the theatre and the festivals, I’ve been inspecting the satyr butterfly cocoons, the sea turtle nests, and I have brought the Pecan treats!
That sounds like the wonderfully fun, purrductive, delicious and conservational time! I understand that y’all might have some
Movie & DVD Reviews!
Hai! So like, Dark Dungeons is the totally awesome live-action short movie adaptation of the famous 1984 evangelical comic book by publisher Jack Chick, It is has the anti-RPG (Role Playing Game) and anti-LARP (Live Action Role Playing) message in the plot which pertains to innocent, sweet, religious best friends Debbie & Marcie who are freshman roommates at college. They hope to join some sociable student organizations, but at a wild party they are lured to an RPG club, which is part of a secret evil cult that hopes to recruit, corrupt and / or sacrifice them, fur shur!
The girls become addicted to the game at the expense of their studies, but as they get the empowering taste of the dark side, they risk not only failing their classes but losing their lives & souls! The movie was produced & written by JR Rails, directed by L. Gabriel Gonda, and stars Alyssa Kay as Debbie / ElfStar the cleric, Anastasia Higham as Marcie / BlackLeaf the thief, Tracy Hyland as Mistress Frost & Jonathan Crimeni as Nitro the dungeon masters, Trevor Cushman as the student advisor, David Anthony Lewis as the professor, and Kaleb Hagen-Kerr as the preacher!
The movie is a fairly straight-forward adaptation of the comic book, which seems both faithful and parody with much satirical humor, innuendo & role play in-jokes that avid gamers might find amusing, such as the gazebo and “attack the darkness” references! I think the character Nitro the tough DM was a nod to the Knights of the Dinner Table comics! It does get sad & tragic, but there are some brief fight stunts too! The movie is only 40 minutes long and can be viewed at its official web site for the small price, and there are optional extra features for an additional smaller price.
It is well written & directed with good cinematography, locations, sound & music, and the actors were totally awesome, with appropriately overstated performances to & scenery-chewing to capture the spirit of the roles & the seriously dogmatic plot! There are hooded cult robes, pretty jewelry, painted miniatures, garb & props for the sword & sorcery cosplay, and some FX too- but I should not spoil much more of the plot, or reveal what macabre surprises lurk in the dungeons, the castle, or the school’s steam tunnels! I think Dark Dungeons was a very entertaining widdle movie, and I will especially recommend it to the fantasy fans & gamers, fur shur!
I love to play AD&D games and I want to see that movie! My paladin character Linina specializes in the dungeons. Mina-sensei’s turn!
I have rather enjoyed Kevin Smith’s movies such as Clerks, Clerks 2, Chasing Amy, Dogma and Mall Rats, so I flew to the mainland to catch the limited theatrical release of his latest movie Tusk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tusk_(2014_film)! The idea for the bizarre tale evolved from a topic which Kevin Smith and Scott Moser discussed on SModcast, which is their podcast. Smith wrote, directed and edited the darkly comedic horror film, which is the first part of a trilogy; it is mostly set in Manitoba Canada, although it was actually muchly filmed here in North Carolina!
The movie stars Justin Long as Wallace the discourteous podcaster who tries to interview a reclusive old man named Howard, who is purrtrayed by Michael Parks, but in Howard’s huge, palatial rural house, Wallace is betrayed, drugged, imprisoned & mutilated in order to be surgically transformed into a Walrus to sate Howard’s insane, sinister purpose!. The movie co-stars Haley Joel Osment as Wallace’s co-podcaster friend Teddy, Genesis Rodriguez as their girlfriend Ally, and Johnny Depp as Detective Laqpointe who helps them search for Wallace and Howard!
I like most of Johnny Depp’s movies too! Kevin Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn Smith & Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose Depp purrtray the two convenience store clerks, who will also appear in the forthcoming sequel titled Yoga Hosers! Kevin Smith certainly has the wonderful knack for the tales of the store clerks! The bizarre plot was fascinating with the balance of the dark humor, drama, disturbing horror and action. It is not one of my favorite Kevin Smith movies, but I thought the production values, locations, cinematography sound, music, FX and editing were quite fine!
Robert Kurtzman’s make-up FX for the Walrus transformation were quite viscerally effective. and the performances are very good, with the ironic emotional and physical transformations, as Wallace goes from the very annoying, rude person to the very sad, sympathetic tragic character, whilst Howard goes from the calm, eloquent storyteller to the scary, crazy fiend, but I should not spoil more of it! By the way, If you do go see this movie, make sure to remain for the end credits, as there is the excerpt from the SModcast audio amidst the credits, plus the extra tidbit after the credits!
Yattah! I like Kevin Smith’s movies and I like horror movies, so Tusk has definitely purrked my interest! Howboutchoo, Dina-sensei?
Asia’s High Voltage Live Deluxe Edition CD / DVD!
Hai! Asia is one of our favoritest rock super groups, and High Voltage Live is their 2nd record of this year, following their studio album Gravitas on which the new member Sam Coulson succeeded Steve Howe as the lead guitarist. The High Voltage concert occurred on July 24, 2010 at Victoria Park in London England, and featured the original four founding members of the band: drummer Carl Palmer, lead vocalist John Wetton who also plays bass and acoustic guitar, Geoffrey Downes on keyboards and backing vocals, and Steve Howe on lead guitar and backing vocals!
Howe and Downes are also among the members of the iconic rock band Yes, whose Heaven and Earth CD we reviewed in the August Mew! Legendary artist / designer Roger Dean who illustrated many Asia and Yes logos and album covers introduced the band to the audience at the concert, where they performed all 9 songs from their great 1982 debut album, You get to hear and see them perform “Heat Of The Moment”, “Wildest Dreams”, “One Step Closer”, “Time Again”, “Cutting It Fine”, “Without You”, “Here Comes The Feeling”, ‘Sole Survivor”, and “Only Time Will Tell”!
1982 seems like only yesterday, and the time seems to have flown by like a Warp Drive! They also perform the song “An Extraordinary Life” from their 2008 album Phoenix, which we reviewed in the August 2008 Mew, and “I Believe” from their 2010 Omega album! High Voltage Live differs a bit from their 2-disk album Fantasia Live in Tokyo, which was recorded on March 8th, 2007 at the Shinjuku Koseinenkin Hall in Tokyo Japan, and included not just the Asia songs, but also a few songs from the members’ other bands such as Yes, ELP, King Crimson and The Buggles!
High Voltage Live was released last month upon the Frontiers Records label, and packaged similarly to Gravitas, in the tri-fold cardboard case with beautiful tiger themed cover art by Roger Dean! The CD and DVD secured in the inner plastic trays, and the full color 8 page booklet in the center pocket. The concert lasts a bit over 63 minutes, and the video is 16:9 widescreen with the audio choice of 2.0 stereo or surround on the region-free NYTSC standard DVD. I was very pleased with the music and the video, and I will certainly recommend it to fans of Asia and prog rock!
Nyow it is Teena-sensei’s turn!
My Little Pony The Complete Series DVD
We have discussed many of the Pony comics, books, toys, collectibles and DVDs, and although we have been amidst the current Friendship is Magic generation of the ponies since, it is good that the prior generations of ponies have not been forgotten! In the June 2013 Mew we reviewed the My Little Pony Busy Books, in the May 2014 Mew we reviewed the My Little Pony Classic Movie Collection, in the August 2014 we reviewed the Hallmark’s Cotton Candy pony ornament, and now I would like to say a bit about the My Little Pony The Complete Original Series DVD!
The format, mythology, art style, humor and characters are rather different from the later Friendship is Magic era. That includes the versions of Twilight and Applejack, and the other talking, sentient pegasi, unicorns, earth ponies, sea ponies and flutter ponies such as Cherries Jubilee, Cotton Candy, Cupcake, Ember, Firefly, Fizzy, Ginger Bread, Gusty, Heart Throb, Honeysuckle, Lickety-Split, Lilac, Locket, Lofty, Mimic, Moon Dancer, Morning Glory, North Star, Posey, Shady, Paradise, Rose Dust, Royal Blue, Sky Dancer, Starburst, Sun Dance, Surprise and Sweet Stuff!
The mane adult & baby ponies reside in Paradise Estate along with humans such as Megan, Molly & Dan, neighbors such as Mr. Moochick, Spike the dragon, and the non-talking ponies and cows who are more pets or livestock rather than “people”. The majority of the ponies are fillies, but occasionally colts visit, such as the Big Brother Ponies. Other anthropomorphic species include the bushwoolies, furbobs, bee people, gizmonks, lava demons, numerous critters, monsters, & villains such as Catrina, T Rax, Bumble, Porcina, Draggle, Hydia and Reeka to name a few!
There are plenty of songs, and although the series is known for its flowery, sparkly, rainbowy and giggly qualities, it has darker aspects such as spooky violent villains, monsters, fighting, slavery, kidnapping & nonconsensual transformations! Among the voice actors are Sue Blu, Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Nancy Cartwright, Charlie Adler, Jennifer Darling, Tammy Grimes, Paul Williams and Tony Randall! This 4 disk set from Shout includes the first generation of Hasbro’s My Little Pony specials and the TV series which were distributed by Sunbow in the mid 1980’s!
They are presented in full frame format of the 1.33:1 aspect video in English language 2.0 stereo on the Region 1, NTSC standard DVD. The 65 episodes are about 10-11 minutes apiece, including 9 single episodes, 11 two-part tales, 6 four-part tales, and a 10 part tale! These are not in the chronological order, as the introductory “Rescue from Midnight Castle” and “Escape from Catrina” are on disk 4. The set has no subtitles, ads, inserts, booklets or extra features, but has nearly 12 hours full of wonderful pony fun, and I think it would be a prized part of a fan’s collection!
Nyan nyan nyan!
