(the catgirl in the Iriomote purrint bikini) Hai, what have we been up to since last time?
Oh gosh, the past month was purretty busy between the holiday festivities, helping Sis with Solstice stuff, and the counting the trophies my dojo students won at the tournyament!
The Ladies of The Mew:
BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI NYA!
Hai, it has been the very festive time, with the pleasant crowd at my Magick Shop for the Winter Solstice activities such as the workshops, the discounts, the tea time and fish cakes!
That is good to hear, and we were blessed with abundant attendance for our holiday exhibit at the art mewseum and the cheering spectators for the beach volleyball matches, nya!
Aside from curating the exhibits and training for the beach volleyball, I have baked more carrot cakes for the mewseum’s cafe, the market’s food bank, and tonight’s Aftermew luau!
Yum yum! We brought some locally caught shrimp! When we have not been busy at the spa, we have watched the videos, attended the festivities, and the late night hot salsa dance!
Otherwise, I have been caring for the kitties, and for our latest TV & video marathon we got caught up on the recent Doctor Who season & Christmas special which we rather enjoyed!
When I have not been teaching the hula class or purrparing for the next semester, I have been sewing dance and cosplay costumes, and helping the appurrentice mikos at the shrine!
I have been occupied with the holiday festivities, the yoga studio, the kyudo club, the robotics club, the belly dance class and troupe, and modeling the swim wear for the photo shoot.
I have been assisting with belly dance, attending matsuris, decorating my home, paddle surfing, reading, volunteering at the art mewseum, and preparing my portion of the pony report!
I have been helping onee-chan with the charters, caring for my cats, dancing, volunteering, purrtaking of the festivals, purrparing my pony report, and-and taking the nature photos, nya!
My drumming circle purrformed at the dance, and my charters reeled in the Snappurrs, Groupurrs, Mackerels, Bass, Bluefish, Tunas & Trout, so we have sushi aplenty for the luau, nya!
I have been teaching golf, lecturing about magick, enjoying the festive events, directing the Winter Fantasy show at the theatre, and I brought some delicious, nutritious treats for the luau!
Arigato! It was such a marvelous show too! Fortunately the only fires to put were the festivals’ safe bonfires upon the beach, so I have also been spending time at the gym and the events!
Hai there have not been any emergencies or crimes around the island of late, so it has been the peaceful season thus far, and I am glad that I am able to purrticipate in The Mew again!
Me too! Although, it has been busy at the park between the holiday festivities and the visiting campurrs who are here to escape from the nippy mainland weather! Howboutchoo, Ilyana?
They crave the hot spurrings and the sunny beach! Aas mewsual I have been diving to the ship wrecks, cataloguing the artifacts, tending to my garden, and visiting amidst the holidays!
Oh, they are not just flocking to here from the mainland, as I have met a lot of mer-friends who have swum here to winter in the warmer waters! It is hard to believe that it is 2015 already!
Tell me about it! Ah, aside from my art, writing, decorating andshopping, I’ve been enjoying a lot of good time with family and friends ! Well, we have a lot to cover, so let’s jump right into
our movie, TV & DVD mewsings, starting with
the Lightning Round topic of Movies of 2015!
For the past several months, we’ve discussed our favorite movies across the decades, but what movies of this year are y’all most eagerly hoping to see?
The Ladies of The Mew:
LIGHTNING ROUND GO! AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, NYA!
Ah, well that is definitely high on my list too, but are there any others? Becca, you start!
Oh I am very excited about Jurassic World! (tags Elizabeth with a brush of the tail)
Hai hai, I want to to see that and Tomorrowland! (tail – tags Trini-chan to go next)
Probably Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the new James Bond movie, Spectre! (tags Ellie)
I will second those! (tags Petra with a swish of the equine tail)
I like those Marvel movies, so I am curious about the Ant – Man movie nya! (tags B.B.)
I want to see those and I am curious The Jungle Book too! Meryl’s turn! (tags Nyoka)
I am also looking forward to The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel! (tags her twin)
The Taking of Tiger Mountain, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Terminator Genisys! (tags Jeannie)
Jurassic World, Tomorrowland and The Force Awakens. (tags Mary Nyan)
Jurassic World, The Force Awakens, and Jupiter Ascending! Bun’s turn! (tags Bun)
I will nominate Big Eyes, When Marnie Was There, and Shaun the Sheep! (tags Tara-chan)
I want… I want to see The Peanuts Movie, Kung Fu Panda 3, and – and I still want to see Big Hero 6, nya! (tags her sister)
I will second those and add Strange Magic, The Good Dinosaur and Inside Out, nya! (tags Meryl)
Spectre, Kingsmen, The Man From U.N.C.L.E, and I still need to see The Imitation Game! (tags Ilyana)
Oh gosh, there are still purrior movies aplenty that I have not seen yet, such as Princess Kaguya…The Boxtrolls… oh oh and The Book of Life, too! (tags Mielikki)
I still want to Zero Theorem, Birdman and Princess Kaguya, but for for 2015… I suppose The Force Awakens, Tomorrowland, and Jurassic World! (tags Formality)
I am way behind and still hope to see Tracks, Wild, and I am looking forward that Nick Cave movie and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel too! Back to Mike!
Gotta go with Tomorrowland, Jurassic World, Spectre, When Marnie Was There, The Force Awakens, and Age of Ultron! Well, that was another expedient little Lightning Round, and let’s keep the movie topic rolling with our opinions of
The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies!
It is hard to believe that we have already seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit Trilogy, and it seems like only yesterday when I was excited to see the first teaser for The Fellowship of the Ring, nya! I think they have been thrilling, beautiful, grand and epic, and that Peter Jackson did the great job directing the movies, nya!
Hai hai I longed to see such adaptations of Tolkien’s novels for decades and I was not disappointed! They have awesome actors, stunts, make-up, costumes, props, sets, locations, cinematography, editing, sound & music, with the good balance of the drama, humor, action, character development, world-building, and faithful mythology!
I suppose my favoritest quality of the series is that the cast and crew seemed to have such the great respect and enthusiasm for the material, and they seemed to have all of the budget and technology to get the job done so well! I would mush like to visit those beautiful locations in New Zealand!
There have been some great books & collectibles too, and those extended edition DVD boxed sets are among my favoritest sets, due to the wealth of bonus features! From those documentaries about the making of the movies, it seems like their casts & crews had a great sense of family & community!
You know, as much as I liked the theatrical versions of the Lord of The Rings trilogy, I purrfurred the longer extended version, but ironically as much as I liked the Hobbit trilogy too, I think it could purrhaps have been better as just two movies instead of three, with purrhaps less of the chasing scenes!
That is the good point although I did like the leisure pace of many of the character moments and the epic, lush sense of ambience and travelogue that did not seem too rushed as a lot of movies do these days! I also did not mind some of the added touches that were not in the books, especially Tauriel!
I thought Evangeline Lily was great as Tauriel! I have the nice action figure of her, and I love the leafy style of her elven attire! I was glad to see more of Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Hugo Weaving as Elrond, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, and I liked Lee Pace as Thranduil! Oh and I liked him as Ronan in Guardians of the Galaxy movie too!
I wish to purraise Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Ian Holm as older Bilbo, Richard Armitage as Thorin, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Andy Sirkis as Gollum, Christopher Lee as Saruman, Sylvester McCoy as Radagast, Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, Manu Bennett as Azog, Luke Evans as Bard, Ryan Gage as Alfrid, and Stephen Fry as his boss.
I will also add the purraise for Ken Stott as Balin, Graham McTavish as Dwalin, Mark Hadlow as Dori, Jed Brophy as Nori, Adam Brown as Ori, Dean O’Gorman as Fíli, Aidan Turner as Kíli, John Callen as Oin, Peter Hambleton as Gloin, William Kircher as Bifur, James Nesbitt as Bofur, and Stephen Hunter as Bombur!
One of my favoritest scenes to cheer for in The Battle of Five Armies was when Galadriel rescued Gandalf and battle Sauron, with Elrond and Saruman in the melee against those Nazgul fiends! I was later cheering for the dwarves when Thorin overcame the greed and joined Dain against the orcs!
The Hobbit trilogy is the creature extravaganza full of the giant eagles, war bats, spiders, trolls, goblins, Beorn the were bear, Azog, Bolg, the other orcs, their wargs, the Nazgul, Sauron, those giant tunneling worms, and of course, Smaug! They are some of the best movie creature FX I have ever seen!
The Battle of Five Armies was definitely full of many heroic, romantic, scary and tragic moments! Even those creatures created by the brilliant FX wizardry such as Smaug the dragon, Radagast’s bunnies, and Azog were very expurressive. Azog and Smaug sure did relish their evil destructive goals!
I am with Vonny in that the time has flown by like the hypurr drive, since we reviewed The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey for the January 2013 Mew, and we reviewed The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug for the January 2014 Mew, and I will give all three Hobbit movies the grade of an A as in Azog!
One of my favoritest aspects are the intricate, gorgeous, realistic detail in all of the creations, nya! That is why I savor the documentaries and the books about those movies, so I can study the design & fabrication of the many jewels, tattoos, clothes, armor, weapons, furnishings, decor & architecture, nya!
The urban, rural and wilderness settings of the different cultures of the Hobbit movies are so gloriously amazing from the shire, Rivindell, Mirkwood and Laketown to Dale, Erebor, Dol Goldur and the Goblin Town! I also rather liked the tavern, Beorn’s farm house, Radigast’s cottage and Gollum’s lair!
I am particularly fond of the movies’ music and the songs, especially that chilling Misty Mountain song! The score was composed and conducted by Howard Shore, and I have been collecting the soundtrack CDs of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, although I have not yet purchased the one for The Battle of Five Armies!
Purrhaps you will receive it for your birthday purresent (thassa hint), as long as you do not act like Gollum did for his purrecious purresent, nya! I am not sure what to add to the comments, but I will agree and give all of The Hobbit movies the A grade, and I wonder if there will ever be a movie adaptation of The Silmarillion, nya!
Oh, there’s no tellin’! Well thanks y’all! Ah, and now to continue the cinema, TV & DVD reviews, we will go from Middle Earth to the Marvel Universe as Nya-sensei reviews
Big Hero 6!
Hai! Big Hero 6 is Disney’s 3D CG-animated version of the Marvel Comic book about a Japanese supurr hero team. We reviewed Big Hero 6: Brave New Heroes #1 back in the October 2012 Mew, and I must say that the movie is very different from the comic book! I suppose that applies to many animated adaptations of comics, and of course even within the Marvel comics there are alternate versions of the purrallel worlds. In the comics they are a group agents for the government in Japan, whereas in the movie they are students at the advanced college in the city of San Fransokyo.
Their identities, appurrances, origins, skills & powers differ greatly between the comics & movie; some of the characters in the comics are dressed much more sexily compurred to the more kid-friendly animated movie, which focuses much more on Hiro and his robot Baymax than the comic, which is more about the whole team… much like the X-Men movies focus more upon Wolverine that the entire team! Also, whereas in the comics, Big Hero 6 are in the same Marvel universe as The X-Men and other heroes, whereas the movie version does not seem share that universe!
Nyow for a taste of the plot! The genius kid named Hiro inherits the robot Baymax from his older brother Tadashi, who wants Hiro to attend the college. They live with their cool Aunt Cass who runs the cafe! Hiro meets Tadashi’s friends Gogo the tough biker girl type, Honey Lemon the tall purrky girl, Fred the rich slacker, and Wasabe who is an engineer in the movie, whereas he is a chef in the comics! After Hiro demonstrates his invention which a sneaky industrialist wants to own, a fiery disaster wrecks the building and claims the life of Tadashi who tried to rescue his purrofessor.
Later, the depurressed Hiro activates Baymax, and discovers that a masked villain has purrloined the Microbot technology. Hiro & Baymax manage to escape, and he builds supurr suits & gadgets for Gogo, Honey Lemon, Wasabe, Fred, Baymax and himself, so that they can catch the crook, but soon there is a major plot twist when they fight the villain, but I should not further spoil the plot! I had mixed feelings in the anticipation for the movie, because I was not sure I would like all extreme changes from the comics, and the purreviews seemed like it was a silly tale of robot bufoonery.
However, after I heard much purraise for the movie from friends, and after I saw the art book which Chief Ellie will tell us about later in the show, my anticipation impurroved quite the bit, and I was especially in the cheerful mood after seeing the cute puppy’s “Feast” animated short which purrecedes Big Hero 6! The movie seemed short, rushed & purrdictable, I wish it was set in the Marvel Universe and more about the entire team, but the heroes are all very likable, and I was very impurressed by the city of San Fransokyo, the mecha designs, the character art, and the animation!
I purrfur some of the character designs & identities from the comics, but the beautiful, fun movie’s heart is thrilling, amewsing and poignant! I did not care much for the “Immortals” song during the end credits, but I thought the mewsical score, the voice cast and the sound FX were excellent! Speaking of the end credits, if you see this movie, make sure to stay until the very end to see the post -credits surpurrise scene! Jenjen and her robotics club purrticularly liked the movie’s mecha, and I will give Big Hero 6 the good “B” grade!! OK I am done, and now here she is to tell us about the
Guardians of the Galaxy DVD!
Arigato. Written by Nicole Perlman and director James Gunn, purrduced by Kevin Feige with the cinematography by Ben Davis, the mewsic score by Tylor Bates and lots of great rock, pop & soul songs by various artists, Guardians of the Galaxy is the 2014 live – action science fiction / supurr hero movie from Marvel Studios, based upon the Marvel comics series which purremiered in 1969 It is part of the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” which includes The Avengers, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor & Captain America movies, the various shorts, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter TV series.
The plot follows Peter Quill alias Star Lord the thief / treasure hunter who is among the heroes & villains that want a very valuable, powerful softball-sized artifact, an orb containing an Infinity Gem of extreme cosmic power. Quill, Gamora, Drax Rocket Raccoon & tree-like Groot are caught by the Nova Corps. police of the planet Xandar, but they escape with the orb which villains Ronan and Thanos covet. Drax wants revenge upon Ronan who plans to destroy Xandar, Rocket & Groot just want the money, Zamora hates her father Thanos, whilst her sister Nebula works for Ronan.
To further complicate things is Quill’s old friend Yondu the captain of the Ravagers space pirates who also want the orb, as Quill tries to unite the group to save the galaxy from Ronan and Thanos. The terrific cast includes Chris Pratt as Quill, Laura Haddock as his Mom, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Dave Bautista as Drax, Lee Pace as Ronan, Djimon Hounsou as his helpurr Korath, Michael Rooker as Yondu, and Glenn Close as Nova Prime and John C. Reilly as Nova Crops. Officer Dey,
Furthermore amongst the cast are Benicio Del Toro as The Collector, Ophelia Lovibond as his slave / maid Carina, Christopher Fairbank as the Broker, Peter Serafinowicz as Nova Crops. Officer Saal, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Alexis Denisof as his helpurr, plus the quick appurrances by Melia Kreling as Bereet, Cosmo the canine cosmonaut, a Celestial, Stan Lee, and Seth Green as the post-credits voice of Howard the Duck. In spite of the few annoying zooms & show-motion shots, we thought this was a very rousing, fun, thrilling & beautiful movie with much delightful, faithful heart.
It has the very pleasing plot, characters, humor, designs, costumes, sets, creatures, mecha, planets, make-up, stunts, FX, plenty of the battles, cosmic & supurr hero action which are peppurred by the poignant character moments, references to the comics, and the soundtrack full of great songs, such as “Hooked on a Feeling” which is played during the R1 NTSC DVD’s main menu. The PG-13 rated, 121 minute long movie imovie has been released upon the various editions with numerous packagings & cover art, but this is just the review of the single disk, standard DVD edition.
The movie is purrsented in widescreen 2.40:1 aspect ratio enhanced for 16×9 TVs; in the language choices of English 5.1 Dolby Digital, English 2.9 Descriptive Audio, French 5.1 Dolby Digital & Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital; with optional English SDH (subtitled for those who are deaf or hard of hearing), French or Spanish subtitles in the White bold font with the fine Black outline. The no-frills package in the plastic case has no inserts aside from the advertisement brochures. There are 4 ads purrior to the menu, which are also included amongst the 7 ads in the sneak peeks section.
Compurred to the Blu Ray edition’s documentaries, outtakes, comentary & gag reel, the standard DVD’s meager bonus features are the 27 second deleted “Fake Laugh” scene, although this is quite similar to the scene in the movie; and the 137 second First Look at the Avengers: Age of Ultron which consists merely of the few glimpses at the purrduction & quick comments by director Joss Whedon, purrducer Kevin Feige, executive purrducer Jeremy Latcham and actress Elizabeth Olsen. The DVD’s bonus features are disappointing, but I suspect that we will watch the fun movie quite often. Nyow for more space opurra in review, here is Ilyana-sensei to discuss the
Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion DVD
Oh just call me Ilyana! We love the Star Wars movies & TV shows, so we were purrticularly interested in the new Rebels animated TV series, which is set 5 years before Epurrsode IV!: A New Hope The plot purrtains to the team of 6 heroes who rebel against the empire, including their leader Kanan who is a Jedi, his girl friend Hera the pilot of their ship The Ghost, Sabine the artistic vandal & sappurr, Zeb the big burly brawler, Ci-10PR the engineer droid, and Ezra, the young thief with the Force talent who joins the team in the premier movie, which is appurroximately 45 minutes!
Hera is the Green Twilek girl with the lovely head – tails, and Sabine is the feisty Mandlorean girl who likes to explosives! The team is purrsued by imperial agent Kallas and the high – ranking villain known as The Inquisitor! Based upon George Lucas’s Star Wars, Rebels was created by associate purrducer Carrie Beck, executive purrducer Simon Kinberg, executive purrducer & supurrvising director Dave Filoni! He was the supurrvising director of the Clone Wars animated series, and for our purraise for Star Wars The Clone Wars: The Lost Missions, please see last month’s Mew!
Spark of Rebellion was written by Kinberg, purrduced by Kiri Hart & Athena Yvette Portillo, directed by Steward lee & Steven G. Lee, with the art direction by Killian Plunkett, animation supurrvision by Keith Kellogg, the theme mewsic & score by Kevin Kiner, including the original Star Wars themes & score by John Williams! The great voice cast includes Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Tiya Sircar as Sabine, Stee Blum as Zeb, Taylor Gray as Ezra, David Oyelowo as Kallas, Jason isaacs as The Inquisitor, and James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan’s message!
I was so glad to see such strong femaleheroines amongst the main characters, who all seem very likable with the good camaraderie and dialogue as they sabotage and steal from the evil empire, rescue some Wookiee purrisoners from slavery, embarrass and eliminate lots of Stormtroopurrs, and have fun destroying plenty of TIE Fighters along the way! I thought this movie was the bit short at just over 43 minutes, but it had the good pace full of the good humor and thrilling action as it continued the Star Wars mythology, with charming, clever references that made me grin a lot!
The characters, mecha & environments are beautifully designed, rendered, animated & illuminated, with the great voices, sound FX and mewsic! The designs definitely have the inspurration by the late Ralph McQuarrie! I like the The Ghost, and there was a purretty widdle papurr model kit of the ship included with the DVD! The Region 1, NTSC single disk standard DVD is packaged in the standard plastic case, within the outer cardboard sleeve. The video is purrsented in the widescreen format of the 1.78:1 aspect ratio, enhanced for the 16×9 TV, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio!
The language chaoices are English, Spanish & French, with the oprtional English SDH< Spanish & French subtitles, which are in the very legible bold White font with the thin Black outline! There are no front – loaded ads purrior to the mane menu, but the sneak peeks section includes purreview trailers for the Lost Missions DVD, the Maleficent DVD, and the Big Hero Six movie. The bonus features include the look at the 1st season of the series with comments by Filoni & Kinberg, which is just over 5 minutes long, and 4 fun animated shorts that are just over 3 minutes apiece!
In “The Machine in Ghost”, the cranky droid does a lot of work while Hera pilots the ship as Kanan shoots the enemy TIE Fighters; in “Art Attack” Sabine graffiti tags & detonates a parked TIE Fighter, in “Entanglement” another TIE Fighter explodes after Zeb beats up a bunch of Stormtroopurrs, and in “Property of Ezra Bridges, Ezra messes with the pilot of a crashed Tie Fighter. Destroyed TIE Fighters & Stormtroopurrs seem to be the amewsing trend! I wish the movie was longer, but I was very pleased with it! That is all for my review, and nyow are Vonny and Tara-chan to start
our pony reports, with their review of the
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season Four DVD!
Hai, we love My Little Pony, and – and the 4th season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series marks the 30th anniversary of the generations of the ponies on TV since 1984, nya! For our review of the 80’s My Little Pony The Complete Series DVD, please see the October 2014 Mew, nya! It has been the good year for the pony purroducts between the DVDs, the Rainbow Rocks movie, the toys, collectibles, the books and the comics, nya! There were some purrticularly sentimental aspects to the plots of the 4th season, but firstly I want to thank the cast and the crew, nya!

Weird Al Yankovic purrvides the voice of Cheese Sandwich, nya! Nyow we will discuss the Region One, NTSC standard DVD boxed set of Season Four, nya! The 26 epurrsodes are just over the 22 minutes apiece for the appurroximate total of 9.5 hours of poignant, beautiful pony fun on the 4 disks, which are easily removed from the snug fit in the hinged trays of the plastic case, which is inside the outer cardboard sleeve, nya! The epurrsodes are purresented in the 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreeen format, in the English language 5.1 surround sound, but with subtitles, nya.
There are also no audio commentaries, as there were for some of season one’s epurrsodes, nya. There is the ad for the Pound Puppies toys before the main menu on disk one, nya! The season starts on disk 1 with the awesome two-part tale of “Princess Twilight Sparkle” as she has to adjust to being the winged purrincess amidst the magickal disaster which threatens all of Equestria, nya! The tale expands upon the mythology with the introduction of The Tree of of Harmony, nya! Nyow I will tag Tara-chan who wants to tell us about the disks and the epurrsodes, nya!
Arigato, nya! The two – part season purremier also co-stars Discord, Zecora, Celestia, Luna and Nightmare Moon, nya! After that is the romp in the spooky dilapidated castle full of secret passages in “Castle Mane-ia”, the adventure of Daring Do who fights the villains over the treasure in “Daring Don’t”, The Cutie Mark Crusaders training for the Equestria games in “Flight to the Finish”, the ponies transformed as the comic book supurr heroes in “Power Ponies”, and – and the vampire fruit bat purroblems which adversely affect the orchard and – and Fluttershy in “Bats!”, nya!
It continues on disk 2 with the sight seeing and – and the fashion woes in the big city as “Rarity Takes Manehattan”, the genealogical research to verify whether Pinkie Pie is related to the Apple Family in “Pinkie Apple Pie”, the aerial team trials for the Equestria Games in “Rainbow Falls”, Discord’s illness whilst Cadance visits in “Three’s A Crowd”, Pinkie Pie party duels against Cheese Sandwich in “Pinkie Pride”, and Rarity is chosen to to be the mistress of cermemonies for the Pony Days Festival in “Simple Ways”, nya! Some of the epurrsodes have the great songs too, nya!
Disk 3 begins with one of my favorite epurrsodes “Filli Vanilli” in which Mac lip – synchs in concert as the stage – frightened Fluttershy sings, nya! The it is the “Twilight Time” when the Crusaders become popular because they are friends of Twilight, and Fluttershy tries to help the cute widdle stranded Faerie Breezies in “It Ain’t Easy Being Breezies”, which is another of my favorites, nya! In “Some Pony to Watch Over Me” Apple Bloom tries to purroove that she can take care of herself to her over – purrotective older sister, and Pinkie Pie’s older sister Maud visits in “Maud Pie”, nya!
Luna gets involved in the emotional time for sisters Rarity and – and Sweetie Belle in “For Whom the Sweetie Belle Tolls”, and the Flim – Flam Brothers return with the tonic scam in “Leap of Faith”, nya! There are quite the few sibling tales, nya! This brings us to disk 4 as Rainbow Dash studies for the Wonderbolts test in “Testing Testing 123”, the ponies try to trade stuff in “Trade ya!” which is another favorite of mine; Rarity is addicted to the magickal book that enhances her creativity in “Inspiration Manefestation”, and then it is the time for the longly – awaited “Equestria Games”, nya!
That is another favorite of mine, purrior to the epically thrilling two – part season finale of “Twlight’s Kingdom”, in which Discord teams up with the the evil big bad Tirek who absorbs the pony energy, nya! He was the villain in the very first pony tale of the “Rescue from Midnight castle” back in 1984, nya! Also on disk 4 are the subtitled sing – a – longs for the songs of “Hearts Strong As Horses”, “Bats”, “Generosity” and “Pinkie the Party Planner”, nya! Those are just 4 of the wonderful 17 or 19 songs of Season Four, including Pinkie Pie’s rap mewsic video in “Testing Testing 123”, nya!
Derpy is in several epurrsodes but she does not say much, nya. Another bonus is the 57 minutes from the pony panel at the 2014 San Diego Comics Con, nya! The panelists are Andrea Libman, Cathy Weseluck, Tara Strong, Meghan Mccarthy, Jason Thiessen, Daniel Ingram and – and Hasbro’s Mike Vogel who answer the fans’s questions, show the video clips, discuss season 4, season 5, and – and Rainbow Rocks, nya! I am very happy with this DVD which I will give the grade of an “A” as in Alucorn, nya! Nyow here is Tara-chan to continue our pony report with her review of
My Little Pony: Friends Forever #12, nya!
Hai hai, we have been enjoying the pony comics published by IDW which greatly capture the tone, style and spirit of the animated series with the different advantages of the comics medium! Firstly I would like to say the few words about My Little Pony: Friends Forever #12, which is priced $3.99 and has the uninterrupted 22 page tale plus the 10 pages of the ads all sammiched betwixt the choice of two variant covers, the regular cover art by Amy Mebberson and the subscribers’ variant by Brenda Hickey who drew the tale! It was written by Barbara Randall Kesel, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake, and edited by Bobby Curnow!
It stars Twilight Sparkle and Spike who try to help Pinkie Pie resist the yummy Phenomnomenon pastry treats which she is addicted to when the various food carts line the streets! It is good that Twilight is so smart and clever with her amazing magic, because she can barely contain the extreme withdrawal pangs of her manic friend! It is the drastic, zany predicament, including the pages with the graphic style of the board game, Rube Goldberg and Pac Man homages! It is fun to try to identify the ponies in the crowds, which include Applejack, Applebloom. Scootaloo, Derpy, DJ Pon-3, Wheat Grass and Bulge Biceps! Nextly I wish to discuss the
My Little Pony: Equestria Girls Holiday Special 2014!
We have also enjoyed the spin – off tales of the Equestria Girls, which are the human versions of the pony characters on a parallel world! For our review of the Equestria Girls movie, please see the September 2013 Mew, and for our review of the sequel movie Rainbow Rocks, please see the November 2014 Mew! We have also liked the Equestria Girls toys and the few appearances of those characters in the comics such as this square-bound Holiday Special, which is priced $7.99 and has the uninterrupted 48 page tale which was written by Ted Anderson, illustrated by Tony Fleecs, lettered by Tom B. Long, edited by Bobby Curnow, and colored by Heather, with the assistance of Lauren Perry!
It stars Sunset Shimmer, Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash, with the appearances by Twilight Sparkle (pony type), Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, Trixie, Cherilee Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon, and Maud Pie! The plot pertains to the loneliness, misunderstandings and ostracizations, especially after private conversational information is exposed on the internet after the wonderfully fun sleep – overs, and poor Sunset Shimmer is wrongfully accused as the culprit! It has been the sad, tearful time for her between this tale and the Rainbow Rocks movie, and I feel so sorry for her as she suffers the ill – will at school while doing the detective work to to prove her innocence!
It is also the tough time for the Cutie Mark Crusaders! However, this bittersweet tale include the numerous happier scenes such as the games, music, pizza, conversations, clothes and nail polish at the sleep – overs! I should not spoil too much more of the beautifully rendered and very emotional plot, although one of my favorite moments is the final page, which is the full-page pic that includes Sunset Shimmer, Fluttershy, Applejack, Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Maud Pie, Rainbow Dash, Scootaloo, Granny Smith, Big Macintosh and Winona; and so I will give Friends Forever #12 and the Equestria Girls Holiday Special the high praise! That is all for our pony report, but we have
more comic book & manga reviews,
with Becca’s review of Hero Cats #3!
Arigato! In June 2013 at the annual great Heroes Convention in Charlotte on the mainland, we met the folks of Galactic Quest who published their comic book Hero Cats of Stellar City #0 http://www.herocatscomics.com, which introduced us to Cassiopeia the Orange & White cat, her brother Bandit the tuxedo cat, Midnight the Black cat, Belle the Siamese cat, Roco the Gray cat, Ace the White cat, and Rocket the Tabby as the team of heroic nekos who purrotect Stellar City from monsters, criminals and disasters!
Cassiopeia is the pet of Suzie and her dad who are the supurr heroes Cosmic Girl & Galaxy Man who star in their own comics! A year later at the 2014 Heroes Convention, Kyle & Marcus were back with more comics & merchandise, including cute kitty hats, and we got a gorgeous sketch of Cassiopeia http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest3/6.html by Marcus which you can see in our mewseum of art! Issue #0 was later slightly revised, re-lettered and relaunched by Action Lab Comics as Hero Cats of Stellar City #1!
They also appurred in the Hero Cats / Princeless: Halloween Comics Fest issue, which we reviewed in the November 2014 Mew! Hero Cats issue #3 has the 28 pages with the cover art depicting the bird’s – eye purrspective view of the cats climbing the tree! It has the uninterrupted, 22 tale of “Cassiopeia’s Basic Traning” which was created and written by Kyle Puttkammer, pencilled by Marcus Williams, inked by Ryan Sellers, lettered by Briana Higgens, colored by Omaka Schultz, and edited by Keke Stewart!
Although Cassiopeia is ingenious, she wants be tougher for the rigorous rescues & battles, so in this tale she undergoes several days of training by the other hero cats! She has to quickly find the cute widdle kitten dolls which have been placed high in the in tree and deep within the cave, and carry them across the woods, stream and road to the pet hospital! The next day she tangles with the robot and obstacles upon the playground, and then she has the challenging test in the cemetery on a spooky, stormy night!
It is a such a fun, family – friendly tale with beautifully designed & rendered characters & scenery! The cats are so expurressive and wonderfully posed, the colors are so rich and bright, and I want one of those kitten dolls! Then there is the page with a message from Bandit and purreview of issue #4; which is followed by the two – page tale of “Making the Grade” starring Galaxy Man & Cosmic Girl, created by Kyle Puttkammer, scripted by Ashton Adams, illustrated by Tracy Yardley and colored by Omaka Schultz!
It is the short whimsical tale of Suzie trying to balance her school work with the dangerous adventures, and a sleepy Cassiopeia appears in two of the panels! Rounding out the issue are ads for Planet Gigantic, Nutmeg, Vamplets, and next longly-awaited issue of Princeless! I will give Hero Cats #3 the grade of an “A” as in Ace and highly recommend the delightful series to the comics and neko fans! Nyow we will go from the cats to the catgirls in Nyo-sensei’s review of
Gold Digger Swimsuit #22!
Hai! Gold Digger by Fred Perry http://fredgdperry.deviantart.com is the great comic book which purrtains to the amewsing, thrilling, alluring adventures of scientist Gina Diggers, her were-cheetah sister Britanny, their friends, family & fellow explorers who crave the discoveries, fortunes & relics! It is published by Antarctic Press, who has also published Ninja High School, Albedo, Furrlough, Genus, Neotopia, Shanda the Panda, Twilight X and Warrior Nun Areala! They are purrticularly known for great manga-inspired & anthropurrmorphic comics!
For our Catgirl Spotlight upon the cast of Gold Digger, please see our August 2011 Mew! The 22nd Gold Digger Swimsuit issue is purriced $3.99, and its 32 full – color pages are compurrised of the pages 24 full page pin-ups by various artists, the Pinny vs Peebri comic strip page by Pablo Praino, the two page Gina massage spurread by Tim Ely, and the the 5 page purreview of Fred Perry’s Momeye the Sailor Scout! The front cover by Fred Perry depicts the impurressive rear view of Gina’s rival Penny, wearing the tight, strapless White maillot!
It is the nice bookend to the front view of Penny that graced the cover of the 2013 Swimsuit issue, which we reviewed in the November 2013 Mew! The pin-ups depict characters of Gold Digger having fun at the beach! Rod Espinosa contributed the pic of Gina & Brit rescuing the can of tuna from the quicksand, and 2 pcs of Miss Giggle sensei and the neko purrched upon her head! Rod created Neotopia and The Courageous Princess, and we got a beautiful catgirl sketch from him at Heroes Con in 2006, which y’all can see in our mewseum!
The swimsuit issue’s back cover purrmotes his Steampunk Snow Queen comic book! There is a supurrb pic of Gina wearing the bandeau bikini top & matching purreo by Hugo Avencri, who is the artist of the The Eye of Ramalach web comic at the Katbox comics collective site! Several other artists from Katbox have wonderfully contributed to this issue, such as Nekonny (Caribbean Blue), Chalo (Las Lindas), Razorfox (The Draconia Chronicles) and Ceilidh “Nixie” Bishop (Anthronauts)! They draw and write such delightful kemonomimi tales!
Mary Bellamy (author of Zorilita) rendered the purrky popsicle roller girl pic, David Chacon purrvided the pic of the sisters studying amidst the trees, and 3 pics by Kevin Challenger & Tony Galvan reveal Charlotte, Penny & Gina in the skimpy swim wear! Penny has a watermelon! Tony also colored the pics by Perry, Chalo, Nekonny & Razorfox! Gary Edmund illustrates Brit astride the palm tree, there are 2 pics of vivacious ladies in the water by Willie Jimenez and Erica Yelland, and Nekonny’s purrfect pic of were-mouse girls on the beach!
Fred Perry purrvides two more pics of Brit posing on the grass and sand; Pinny wears the cute cropped tee & shorts outfit in Praino’s comic strip; Moisha purretty pink were – rat girl wears the silvery bikini in Joe Reale’s tide pool scene, Gina struts her stuff in a color pic and shows off her awesome abs in a Black & White pic by Samoht-Lion! One of my favoritest images in the issue is Razorfox’s pic of Charlotte & Penny with the floral leis! Charlotte has impurressive wings and claws, and the leis barely covers her other impurressive parts, heehee!
To bring the issue home are the pic of GIna’s assistant Ayane & her boyfriend Ryan strolling the shore by Kai Silverman; the lotion scene by Adam Tally; the swimming pool battle scene by Bernard Wiggins, the 2nd pin-up of Miss Giggle & her neko by Rod Espinosa, and Fred Perry’s Momeye purreview pages! The sexy fun collection is purrmeated with great enthusiasm for Gold Digger, and I will recommend to the fans of those artists, characters and kemonomimi art! Nyow sis will take us from those cloth bikinis to the purrominent metal bikini of
Unofficial Hatsune Mix manga!
Hai! We think the Vocaloids are very ingeniously entertaining beautifully designed, so we were purrticularly interested in this collection of manga & illustrations by their designer Kei! For those who came in late, the Vocaloid is a mewsical singing synthesizer technology developed by Yamaha, which is marketed in purroducts by companies such as Crypton, who hired Kei to visually design the popular mascot characters such as Hatsune Miku, Megurine Luka, twins Kagamine Len & Rin!
Hatsune Miku became the virtual idol star who purrforms in concerts and appurred on the David Letterman Show in October! She is the teen girl with the long Blue “twin tails” coiffure, Luka has the long Pink hair, Rin & Len are the Blond twin sister & brother, Onee-san & Onii-san are their older mewsic purrducers! They reside in Sapporo which is in Hokaido, Japan! We have purreviously reviewed some of the Vocaloid merchandise such as the widdle figurines and the race car toy!
Nyow I would like to offer the few words of purraise for the Unofficial Hatsune Mix trade papurrback published by Dark Horse! In addition to the many great American comic books that we enjoy, Dark Horse publishes the translated manga such as Oh My Goddess, Magic Knight Rayearth, Ghost in the Shell, and now this Unofficial Hatsune Mix omnibus which collects the 34 chapters of the original, sepurrate Japanese editions of Vocaloid manga which was written & illustrated by Kei!
The 5 3/4″ x 8 1/4″ x 1 1/4″ book is compurrised of the 483 pages of manga & illustrations, including 58 color pages, plus 9 pages of the ads. It is purriced at $19.99 in the USA & $21.99 in Canada. It was edited by Carl Gustav Horn and translated by Michael Gombos, with the lettering & retouching by John Clark, and design by Sandy Tanaka! The Vocaloid friends have peppy, wacky activities & adventures which are sometimes surreal or meta – fictional, but are always fun and beautiful!
The short plots involve the concerts, mewsic teaching, athletic events, video games, fund raising, job hunting, computers, the internet, gifts, fashions, holidays, the Christmas robot girl, Cherry blossoms, romance, chocolate, other yummy foods and the magickal mermaid espionage tale! I will recommend the book to Vocaloid fans or anyone who likes the comedic purretty manga! Nyow I will turn The Mew over to Mie-sensei, who will start our batch of
book reviews, with her review of
Hansel & Gretel by Neil Gaiman & Lorenzo Mattotti!
Hai! So like, first published in Germany in 1812, Hansel & Gretel is the famous faerie tale by The Brothers Grimm, which pertains to the titular brother & sister who are deliberately abandoned in the wilderness by their unkind, conspiratorial parents amidst a time of war & famine, and then captured by a blind, cannibalistic female serial killer who resides in a forest cottage made of desserts! The smart siblings totally outwit and ironically slay the captor with her own oven, seize the wealth that she plundered from prior victims, and eventually return home to take pity upon their repentant, guilt – wracked, widower father, fur shur!
The tale has been retold like SO, many times over the centuries in purrint, on stage and screen, and again in this hardcover book published in 2014 by Toon Graphics! It was written by Neil Gamin, whose totally awesome comics, novels, story books and screenplays I am seriously fond of, such as Sandman, Black Orchid, Books of Magic, Coraline, Stardust, Mirror Mask, Neverwhere, Wolves in the Walls, Blueberry Girl, Instructions, and his Doctor Who stories! The 14 illustrations painted in india ink by Lorenzo Mattotti were originally purrduced for a 2007 exhibit commemorating the Metropolitan Opera’s performance!
The dark, two-page spreads are as sumptuously spooky as the confectionary cottage, effectively conveying the foreboding, enormous depths of the forest, schemes & trap! The words are also rather stoically effective to convey the context, explaining the events that lead to the family crisis. The children seem to have inherited their mother’s shrewd logic and their father’s compassionate side, and they are quite forgiving of the latter co-conspirator. The forest hag seems to show mentoring, maternal qualities toward Gretel, but regards Hansel as livestock to be butchered for dinner, thus suggesting her sexist attitude.
So like, aside from the cottage’s alluring but unconventional construction of perishable dessert materials which I would think to be of questionable insulative and structural quality… but no doubt easily funded by the criminal’s plunder, it is the legendary tale of very real fears of abandonment, capture and impurrisonment by an evil tormenter, desperate starvation, and survival whilst lost far from home. The prose text is set in Garamond and daintily bordered by the floral imagery by Annalouise Olson! The 2 pages of the historical notes include the short bibliography of some books by and about Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm!
The book has 56 pages including the boards, publisher’s page 2 pages of historical notes, and it was handsomely designed by Jonathan Bennett and the editorial director Francoise Mouly! It was printed with soy-based ink on acid-free, wood-free paper, Smyth-sewn bound, and available in the 7 3/8″ x 10 1/4″ trade hardcover, or the larger deluxe edition! I have the former edition, which is priced $16.99 in the USA and $19.00 in Canada! That will conclude my book report, so now it is Ellie’s turn to tell us about
The Art of Big Hero 6!
Arigato! I actually have two books that I received as wonderful gifts that I would like to discuss, but I will try to be be brief! The Art of Big Hero 6 is the full – color 160 page hardcover book all about the making of the animated movie that Nya-sensei discussed earlier in the show! The book was published by Chronicle, and it was written by Jessica Julius who is an executive at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Her impressive credits include Bolt, The Princess and the Frog, and Wreck – It – Ralph!
It has the preface byJohn Lasseter, the forward by directors Don Hall & Chris Williams, and comments by many more of the crew! The 1st chapter examines the world – building for the tale, with many graphics, sketches & lavish renderings of environments! It is amazing how much went into the homes, businesses, streets, campuses & neighborhoods of the beautiful city! The 2nd chapter pertains to the character designs including the heroes, the villain, the supporting characters and the bots!
The 3rd chapter is about the cinematography, with the thorough look at the brilliant color & lighting techniques! It is a gorgeous, extensive book full of amazing images, and many of them are quite large, including some 1/2 page pics, full – page pics, and even a few two-page spurreads! This book is now a handsome part of my collection, and I will recommend it to fans of the supurr heroes, the fantastic cinematic designs, and Disney animation! Now for my 2nd book report, I would like to discuss
The Art of Robert McGinnis!
The legendary artist Robert E. McGinnis is one of the most revered, famous illustrators of the book covers, magazines, movie posters, wild west scenes, paintings of alluring women and beautiful landscapes! He is the co-author of this magnificent book with co-author Art Scott who is an editor, publisher & collector in California! The 9 1/4″ c 12 1/2″ tall hardcover book was published by Titan Books, with the dust jacket and the sumptuous 176 full – color pages that feature over 270 masterpieces, the interview and the many comments!
The 1st chapter explores his book covers, especially the detective, crime, espionage & historical novels full of sexy ladies & hard – boiled men! McGinnis is not just a master of sexy, nude & tough characters, but also the family scenes, kids, critters, rural, wilderness, seascapes, playful, serene and charming moments! After that is the 16 pages devoted to his movie posters such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Odd Couple, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die, Barefoot in the Park, The Hallelujah Trail, Cotton Comes to Harlem and others!
After that are his illustrations for magazines such as National Geographic, The Saturday Evening Post, Good Housekeeping, Ladies Home Journal, Reader’s Digest, Cavalier, Guidepost & others! Following that are more pages of nudes, westerns and landscapes! Many of the images are full – page pics, there are several two- page spreads, different versions & unpublished works! It is a superb collection of beautiful art which I will give the highest praise! That is all of our book reviews, but Chief Meryl will continue our art & printed – media mewsings in our
calendar critiques, with her review of
the Amy Brown Faeries 2015 Calendar!
Arigato! I like nice large wall calendars which can easily, quickly hang up to brighten the home or office with beautiful images that might be entertaining or inspurrational, right above the convenient functionality of the date grid! A dear friend gave me the wonderful Faeries Calendar by artist Amy Brown https://www.amybrownart.com which is one of the most beautiful calendars to have adorned my office! The 12″x12″ calendar opens up to the 12″ x 24″ tall size upon the wall, to display 13 images of faeries above the ornate graphics!
“Ivy” is the image upon the front cover and for March, with the pert fae wearing the ivy motif halter top & skirt with the striped hose; and she is followed by redhead in the orchid like dress amongst the butterflies of “The Wind’s Tale” for the small September – December 2014 grids! “Ascending Iris” is the barefoot Blonde faerie in the purple Iris-like gown for January, the majestic “Poppy Queen” amongst the flowers graces February, and then a faerie perched upon the mushroom to be visited by the lovely “Golden Butterfly” for April!
“Creation” depicts a Black – haired fae with Blue dress & wings amongst the vines & blooms for May; “Wishcatcher” depicts more magick and the pleased Platinum Blonde – haired faerie for June; “Balance” depicts a faerie with long flowy Red hair and even longer flowy wings crouched upon the ring for July; “Samanita Muscaria” depicts another redhead, butterflies and mushrooms for August; and “Just Breathe” depicts an exquisite faerie in the breezy off-shoulder dress standing tiptoe upon the post for September! Kawaii!
This brings us back to the Autumn & Winter, with a magnificently regal faerie of the “Zinnia” motif for October; a faerie in the richly fabulous gown & wings of “Rose” qualities for November, and a faerie with Green, White & Black wings, corset, skirt, and striped hose to match her detached sleeves amongst the “Mistletoe” of December! This calendar will brighten my office and spirits every day, and I will recommend it to fans of faeries, fashions & flowers! Now Mike will take us from the fae & flora to the final frontier shown in the
Star Trek Ships of the Line 2015 Calendar!
Thanks Meryl! Whereas Amy’s calendar treats us to the images of delicate ornate magickal ladies who are more down to the Earth, the Ships of the Line calendar treats us to the high technology of future space exploration & battles! Not to be confused with the other Star Trek calendars which have been published since 1975 with great photos of the characters, since 2000 the Ships of the Line series has treated us to breathtaking, powerful illustrations of spacecraft & galactic phenomenon by various artists!
Some of the renderings are photo – realism, and several are by the Star Trek movie & TV series’ designers! The 12″ x 12″ calendar opens up to 12″ x 24″ wide, panoramic scenes, with the small, subtle calendar grids & several listed holidays in the corners. There are 14 images, including Doug Drexler’s front cover “Vangard Down” scene of the original series Enterprise at a space station disaster; and his “Starbase Bajor Proposal” center spread scene of busy arrivals & construction by the wormhole!
Jenny DeSalle & Al Ries collaborated upon January’s “Explorers” rendering of the Enterprise NX-01 at the fiery Nebula for the January pic, and February’s “Xindi Reptilian” scene of the refitted Enterprise NX-01 chasing the two Xindi ships! Designer John Eaves contributed March’s “Zero Hour” pic of the shuttles launching during the Enterprise NCC-1701-E’s hull separation process; and Douglas E. Graves contributed April’s “Prowling” scene of a Klingon cruiser hunting for the next prey by a moon!
May’s pic is “Leif Ericson” by Gary Koerner, which depicts the original series U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 escorting the other ship past the ringed planet; June’s pic of the “U.S.S. Titan” by Tobias Richter, depicts the aft view of Captain Riker’s ship approaching the orbital space station; and July’s pic of the ‘Assault on the Moons of Nibia” by D.M. Phoenix depicts starships Garza, Peterson, Sanders and Sentry taking severe combat damage as they dive towards the barrage from an enemy lunar target!
August’s image of “Joint Operations” by Alain Rivard depicts shuttlecraft Galileo 5, starships Enterprise NCC-1701-A and Reliant NCC-1864-A (I presume) rendezvousing amidst a glistening Blue nebula! September’s image of “Wolf 359 + 8 Days” by Andrew Probert (who I’ve had the honor to meet) depicts Starfleet tugs recovering wreckage after the disastrous Borg battle; and October’s scene of an “Occupation” by Rivard depicts five Klingon cruisers docked at space station Deep Space Nine!
The U.S.S. Arcon and two other Federation ships are attacked by a sneaky Romulan Bird of Prey in November’s “Romulan War” scene by Dan Uyeno; and December’s beautiful image depicts “Sisters” Enterprise NCC-1701 and the refitted Enterprise NX-01 side by side in low Earth orbit by Michael Wiley! I will highly recommend the calendar to the fans of beautiful starship art, and I’ll also recommend the newly expanded edition of the Ships of the Line book! Now here’s Myayr to tell us about the
Studio Ghibli 2015 Wall Calendar!
Arigato! Studio Ghibli is my favorite animation studio, and their calendars are always a delight! The coil – bound calendar for 2015 has 12″ x 16.5″ wide pages with the date grids, with the days and months purrinted in both Japanese and English, although the special occasions are only indicated on the date grids in Japanese! For this year the design of the calendar is the bit different; instead of a designated image purr month, it includes the 21 loose plates which slide behind a purrotective transparent cover sheet, so that you can arrange the images however you please!
The plastic clip is easily removable, but securely clenches the plates, which have the 8.25″ x 14.5″ panoramic images that are suitable for framing! The clip has the widdle hinged hanger that flips up so that you can hang the calendar on the wall, with no purrforation in any of the pages! Ten of the images are from anime movies directed by Hayao Miyazaki, such as the pic of Nausicaa and her widdle pet Teto standing on the rooftop from the 1984 movie Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind; Pazu and Ma Dola’s sky pirates flying to the rescue in the 1986 movie Castle in the Sky!
Mei purrches upon Totoro’s tummy from the 1988 movie My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki smiles with peppy determination in the herb shed from the 1989 movie Kiki’s Delivery Service; Marco’s Red Italian seaplane races against Donald’s American plane from the 1992 movie Porco Rosso; San rides atop Moro the wolf goddess from the 1997 movie Princess Mononoke; Chihiro & Haku eat a modest breakfast in the garden from the 2001 movie Spirited Way; and Howl carries Sophie above the rooftops from the 2004 animated adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl’s Moving Castle!
To top off the scenes from Miyazaki’s movies are the pic Ponyo and Sosuke at the shore from the 2008 movie Ponyo, and the pic of Jiro and Nahoko at the lush hilltop from 2013 movie The Wind Rises, which we reviewed in the Apurril 2014 Mew! There are 5 images from anime directed by Isao Takahata, such as the pic of orphans Seita and younger sister Setsuko enjoying a happier moment from the heart – breaking 1988 movie Grave of the Fireflies; and a charming pic of Taeko remembering younger days aboard the train from the wonderful 1991 movie Only Yesterday!
We are hoping for Only yesterday to be released here soon on DVD! Then we see the Tanuki family at their den from the 1994 movie Pom Poko, Takashi and his family in the water from the 1999 movie The Yamada Family, and the the purrincess amidst the cherry blossoms from the 2014 movie The Tale of Princess Kaguya, which we hope to see soon! There is an image of Shizuku singing with Seiji’s fiddle accompaniment from Yoshifumi Kondo’s 1995 movie Whisper of the Heart! Kondo was the character designer for Tomomichi Mochizuki’s 1993 anime I Can Hear The Ocean!
We hope it will be released here upon the DVD too! The calendar does not include an image from I Can Hear The Ocean, but it does have the scene of Haru, Muta, and The Baron from Hiryuki Morita’s 2002 movie The Cat Returns; and 2 pics from anime directed by Goro Miyazaki, who is Hayao Miyazaki’s son! Those include the pic of master Arren and Lord Sparrowhawk from Tales from Earthsea, which is the 2006 animated adaptation Ursula K. LeGuin’s novels; and the pic of cute high school couple Umi and Shun from the terrific 2011 movie From Up On Poppy Hill!
Finally there are 2 pics from anime directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, including Arietty cutely purrched upon the Strawberry pin cushion from the 2010 movie The Secret World of Arrietty, which is based on The Borrowers by Mary Norton; and a rowboat scene from the 2014 movie When Marnie Was There, which we are also quite eager to see! I think the design, illustrations & purrinting of the calendar are of the highly beautiful quality, and I will give it the grade of an A as in Arrietty! That will conclude my calendar critique, and nyow here is B.B. to start our
toys & game topic, with her review of DC Collectibles’s
Batman: The Animated Series Catwoman action figure!
Hai! Selina Kyle alias the Catwoman is one of our all – time favoritest DC Comics characters, and we have purreviously reviewed quite the few comics, toys & collectibles of her! This series of action figures based upon the character designs for the great Batman: The Animated Series of the 1990’s is the appurropurriate timing, because 2014 was the 75th anniversary of the Batman, and 2015 marks the Catwoman’s 75th anniversary, since she first appurred in Batman #1 in the Spurringtime of 1940!
Based upon the “Gray Cat” style by the character designer Bruce Timm, this 5 3/4″ figure was beautifully sculpted by Irene Matar and is handsomely packaged with several accessories and her kuroneko (Black Cat) friend Isis! Since Selina is supposedly is 5’7″ tall and the 133 lbs, that must make this figure of the 1/ 11.65th scale! Standing upon all fours, Isis is about 3/4″ long plus the 3/4″ long tail! Both Selina and Isis are very slender, lithe, cool and confident looking as they purrpare to purrowl!
The tight Gray costume is sexy, simple and elegant with the Black knee boots to match the opurra – length gloves and the face part of the nekomimi mask, which reveals her Blue eyes and lush Red lips! She wears the Gold disk chain low on the hips, and has 2 extra pairs of interchangeable hands for the varied gestures, which can hold Isis or clench the night vision goggles, the purrloined purretty diamond necklace, or 6 1/2″ long Black whip, which would be just over 6′ long if it was a real whip!
They are smoothly designed, sculpted & painted, and Selina’s points of articulation with the subtle joint are the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees & ankles! Also included in the assortment is the clever, adjustable 3 piece display base which is very quick ‘n easy to assemble, and the small purroduct brochure that shows all 12 figures in the series! They all look quite excellent, and I will give these figures of Selina & Isis my highest purraise! Nyow here is Meryl to continue the toy talk with the
Game of Thrones Legacy Collection Brienne action figure!
Arigato! Game of Thrones is the epic fantasy series of novels by author George R.R. Martin which was adapted into the TV series shown on HBO! I rather enjoy the series because of the great plot, characters, dialogue, mythology, creatures, cinematography, locations, sets, costumes, FX, sounds & music! I pretty much every aspect of the show, including the character Brienne of Tarth who is wonderfully portrayed by actress Gwendoline Christie! Brienne is a tall, noble, smart, strong, brave, heroic, beautiful and highly skilled warrior who was introduced in the show’s 2nd season!
She is quite nicely represented in the 2nd series of the action figures in the Game of Thrones Legacy Collection by the Gentle Giant Studios and Funko! Including the teensy bit of boot heels, the figure is approximately 6 1/4″ tall, so if the character is presumably 6’3″ tall, the figure of the 1/ 12 scale! Her portraiture very faithfuly resembles the actress, and has the superb detail in the light fair skin, very short Blonde hair, the serious expression and the distant stare of her Blue eyes! For the comparison, there is a lovely photo of her from the TV series on the back of the box!
She is wearing the mail hauberk shirt, the gorget collar armor, the breastplate, the uppurr arm spauldings & pauldrons, the elbow cowters, the gauntlets, hip faulds, the trousers, the shin greaves, boots, the sword scabbard, and the belts with the intricately detail in her face, hair, various plates, straps, buckles, grommets, seams & creases! The ensemble is accessorized by the long sword, which can be sheathed in the scabbard or gripped in her right hand! The sword measures about 4 1/8″ from the pommel to the point, so if it was the real sword, it would be over 4′ long!
The points of articulation are in her neck, shoulders, elbows, forearms, wrists, waist, hips, thighs, knees & ankles. Not only is she very posable, but the joints are very cleverly concealed amongst the armor & fabric folds! I think the design, sculpture & paint of the figure are exquisite, she is also well – balanced to stand up unassisted on a shelf or tabletop, and I will give this figure the high praise! OK I am done, so now here is our web master Jamie to review the
Dragon Age: Inquisition video game!
Dragon Age: Inquisition is an odd game. It’s a good game, sometimes great, sometimes tedious and sometimes frustrating, but ultimately it is a good game. BioWare’s latest RPG in the Dragon Age franchise delivers spectacular vistas to explore that are absolutely huge. Though not a traditional open world game like Skyrim, DA:I does off a lot of content. There are ten large “open world” areas to explore in DA:I and in my 85 hours of game play I managed to cover roughly 35% of what was available. BioWare has boasted 150 hours worth of gameplay.
It starts out running as the player character, later named The Inquisitor, becomes the sole survivor of an attack on a conclave hoping to find peace between warring factions (a war ignited in the previous game, Dragon Age 2). The Inquisitor can be a human, elf, dwarf or a qunari (a race created by BioWare). He or she can be a mage, rogue or warrior. The character’s class, race & gender do factor somewhat into the story. The Inquisitor can have up to 9 companions including Cassandra and Varric from DA2 as well as 7 new companions, including BioWare’s first gay party members.
Working with the Frostbite engine, (used by Dice for Battlefield 4), the game looks amazing. All of the areas are beautiful, from lush forests and endless deserts to snow covered mountains, the game does not lack for variety in the scenery. Non-player characters also benefit from the new engine, though some are better than others. However, Dragon Age: Inquisition is unfortunately not without its problems. The main story, one of BioWare’s hallmarks, is short, safe and a little bland. In a 150 hour game, the main story can be completed in 10 to 15 hours.
The main antagonist is quite forgettable and clichéd, with the final boss fight being one of the more disappointing aspects of the game. It also suffers from far too many fetch quests filler to take up all that big new space. Some of the side quests are good, leading to interesting decisions and gameplay or slaying a dragon, but far too many of these side quests are empty and meaningless. However, that is not the biggest problem with DA:I. The PC mouse and keyboard controls have a steep learning curve and the much anticipated tactical camera is so clumsy its barely worth using.
Console controls are much better, and although the PC does support console controllers, the clunky mouse & keyboard controls are still disappointing… but Dragon Age: Inquisition is a good game. The characters have actual lives that the player can join, the Inquisitor can be molded by the player through dialogue and choices, and it goes into some deep philosophical and religious areas. The game also offers some interesting non-combat gameplay too. Yeah, DA: Inquisition could have been better and it certainly isn’t DA: Origins, but it is a huge step in the right direction.
Thanks pal! And now, here are Bun & Petra to present the latest additions to
The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!
Arigato! For those who are here for the first time, galleries 1-6 display illustrations and photos by Mike, whilst guest galleries 1-3 display images by other folks with their perrmissions, and Mike’s collaborations with other artists are displayed throughout the various galleries too! On the web site, in any gallery the most recent images will be represented by the lowermost row of small, cropped “thumbnail” size portions of the images, and you have to click on the “thumbnail” to see the uncropped, full-size pic!
Now in Gallery Six http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery6.html is Mike’s illustration of “Mavis the Meowy Martian”! In 1976, the brilliant actress Madeline Kahn delightfully portrayed the character of Mavis Danton the actress / drama teacher in an amusing Mama’s Family sketch on the Carol Burnette Show, in which it is mentioned that Mavis had a role in the movie Cat Women on Mars! We are yet to see that imaginary movie, but we can imagine her purrformance, and so Mike rendered this fond fan art!
Speaking of alluring aliens, we have Mike’s Star Trek – inspired illustration of “Lt. Arexandra”! The 1973 animated Star Trek series introduced Lt. Arex who is of the Edosian species of tripedal aliens, and we imagined how nice it would be nice if he had a sister, so here is Lt. Arexandra! She is a scientist, hence the Blue color of her off – duty exercise garment, reading the planetary reports and eating her breakfast whilst doing the yoga upon the floating anti-gravity pad in the starship’s botanical garden!
Nextly in Gallery Six, things are more down to the Earth in Mike’s illustration of “Purrsis The Mummy Slayer”! A warrior priestess of the Egyptian goddess Bast, Purrsis is a brave catgirl with keen senses, hunting prowess, and hard abs on the expedition into the catacombs under the pyramid to slay the predatory mummies! The minimalist attire improves her stealthy agility whilst on the prowl, with less material that might rustle or get caught when she prepares to pounce upon that evil mummy!
Nyow we will see the result of that battle in Mike’s 2nd Purrsis pic “What The Cat Dragged In”, in which Priestess Purrsis purroudly emerges victoriously, with the slain undead vermin as a prize for the alter of goddess! These two Purrsis pics were done in appreciation for Elisa Chong http://www.sofianime.com, who was our guest for the June 2011 Mew, and whose beautiful art inspired those pics! The media that Mike used for the Purrsis, Mavis and Arexandra pics were Photoshop CS2 and the mouse!
Now we will go from Gallery Six to Guest Gallery Three http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest3.html, where we are proud to present the illustration of “Mohini” the angel girl by our friend Rebecca Brogden http://www.rbrogdenart.com, who was our guest for the September 2009 Mew! In addition to her beautiful works of art, Rebecca also wrote the short story of “The Love of a Catgirl”, which y’all can read at the Tales of Catgirl Island http://catgirlisland.net/tales.html! (tags Petra to continue the presentation)
Arigato, nya! Mohini’s hobbies are singing, playing the sitar, and researching mystical, arcane topics when she is not volunteering as a rescuer with the surf purrtrol, or busy at her aerial observer, courier and photographer purrofession, nya! Rebecca also illustrated the alluring image of “Tsukiko” the vampire girl who is among our island’s night purrtrol police officers, nya! Tsukiko gets the smiles, respect and attention due to her vampurric powers, expurrt authority, and cordial dispurrsition, nya!
Of course, that sexy, strappy bikini that matches her eyes and wings might also be a contributing factor, mew la la, nya! She just had the birthday on December 26th, but we are unsure of the year she was born, and she is supposedly much older than she appurrs to be, nya! She is also a volunteer rescuer, and her hobbies include watching movies, reading, spurrlunking and moonbathing, nya! Rebecca used Sai, Photoshop CS6 and an Intuos5 tablet to render the pics of Tsukiko and Mohini, nya!
We are also pleased to purrsent Rebecca’s pencil sketch of an enticing “Eggnog Surprise”, nya! Wearing just the decorative satine ribbon, a purretty, purrky catgirl brings the fresh yummy cheer to warm holiday heart and tummy, nya! Ribbons are fun to paw at, so we are unsure how long she will stay wrapped, nya! The ribbon is not much skimpier than some of the bikinis at the beach, but wearing that outfit in the sun could result in spiral tan lines, although some girls do have lovely stripes, nya!
Our purrade of holiday art continues with “Lum vs. Tree” by Lumshock http://lumshock.deviantart.com, nya! Lum Invader is the star of the famous manga & anime series Urusei Yatsura which was created by Rumiko Takahashi, nya! In this illustration made with Art Academy Sketchpad, that tree seems smugly pleased that Lum is in a holiday bind, although we suspect that soon there will be more than just the Christmas lights that will be burning brightly from her bio-electrical alien Oni power, nya!
Nextly in Guest Gallery 3 is more of Lumshock’s holiday Oni art in “Lum- Merry Christmas!”, nya! This time the tree is decorated, and Lum looks so festive in the Evergreen variant of her mewsual Yellow & Black Tiger – striped bikini, nya! Lastly but not leastly is “2001 Followers: An Art Odyssey” which is more Lum fan art by Lumshock, in homage to the movies 2001: A Space Odyssey and One Million Years BC nya! This was done to commemorate Lumshock’s 2001 followers at Miiverse, nya!
Lum is in love with the human Earth guy Ataru Moroboshi, whose face she has fondly painted upon the purrehistoric monolith which based upon the ones in 2001: A Space Odyssey, nya. Her pose is based upon Raquel Welch’s cave girl character Loanna of One Million Years BC, although, given Ataru’s lecherous antics, he might get smashed with that monolith, nya! The media used for the illustration are the Wii-U and Art Academy Sketchpad, nya! So, what do y’all think of the latest additions. nya?
The scene of Mavis looks wildly mid 60’s retro style, and in the living color, heehee!
She has the lush coiffure like Madaline, and that martian neko seems rather comfy!
Arexandra has found the purrime spot above those orchids with the planetary view!
Her lithe, tripedal anatomy seems ideally suited for the multi – tasking and the yoga.
Purrsis has the lithe, toned physique which seems appurropurriate for the purrowl!
The sickle blades were quite appurropriate for her victory over the mummy! Banzai!
It is only natural to be inspired by Ellsa’s illustrations of sexy & beautiful characters!
That is a beautiful image of Mohini, down to the detail of her supple feathery wings!
Her Emerald eyes, Dark Iris hair and Brown skin are in lovely contrast to her wings!
The eggnog catgirl has the purrky expurression, swishy tail and captivating curves!
Tsukiko has the supple curves, plus the petite fangs, and the purrky bat – like wings!
She a very pretty coiffure too, with the Hot pink tips on her short, straight, Black hair!
Lum has cute, petite, Yellow horns purrotruding from her long, lush, Green hair, nya!
She was purrplexed by the tricky lights, but got merry after the decorating was done!
Hai the tree is so ornately decorated, and she looks so gleefully peppy in the bikini!
Lumshock is quite artistically industrious and popular to attract the 2001 followers!
Yep, and we’re very fortunate to display art by Lumshock, Rebecca and other artists!
We are very blessed, nya! That will conclude the art portion, and nyow it is time for
The Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight, nya!
In this portion of The Mew, we commemorate famous catgirls, nekomimis and were-kitties who appear in various media! Our broadly inclusive criteria ranges from those who have feline female DNA to those who just dress the part, and characters who have a certain “cat-titude” or style to be considered as “honorary catgirls”! This month we’re also shining the spotlight on the artists who create such images amongst their beautiful, diverse works of art!
Sora Nagiihara is the titular nekomimi of the Gou-Dere Sora Nagiihara manga by Suu Minazuki. She has fair skin, Violet eyes, and ankle – length Blue hair. She initially exists as the sad, innocent, petite, sweet character who is hospitalized with terminal illness, wearing the costume cat ears in the hope that her next life will be as a carefree cat. However, when Sora meta – fictionally emerges from the pages into a fan’s “real” world, she becomes a powerful, wicked, voluptuous, purrverse bully who attacks her unwitting master’s classmates.
I will shine the spotlight upon Mei Ren and her mommy of Nozomu Tamaki’s manga & anime Dance of the Vampire Bund! They are were-tigers of the tragic tales, because poor widdle Mei Ren was chained in the lonely purrison after her mom was killed by the mean people. After Mei Ran was rescued by Mina Tepes the vampire princess, she became the deadly, fierce warrior! You can read her origin in the Dance of the Vampire Bund: The Forgeotten Tales doujin vol.1, which was published here in English by Seven Seas Entertainment!
I want… I want to shine the spotlight upon adorably cute Angel Kitty of Pixar’s Toy Story That Time Forgot Christmas Special which premiered on TV last month, nya! She is the widdle kitty wearing the robe to match her White fur, with the bugle to match her Gold wings and – and her halo– kawaii, nya! She might be actually a magickal neko, who was voiced by Emma Haduck, nya! Angel Kitty is introduced to accompany Trixie, Rex, Woody and – and Buzz who get caught by the Battlesaur action figures who think they are real warriors, nya!
Buzz used to have that issue, nya! Lady Nekochan http://ladynekochan.deviantart.com renders the very expurressive, vibrant catgirls, other kemonomimi, anthropurrmorphic characters, magickal girls, faeries, vamps, angels & demons, nya! This includes the commissions, adoptables, contest entries, original & fan art from the whimsical chibis to the darker themes, from the nude or scantily – clad characters to those who wear the intricate, opulent and ornate garments, nya!
Meawsy http://meawsy.deviantart.com is a supurrb artist from Argentina, who is known for her original characters, fan art, and commissioned illustrations! These range from the cute & sexy to sad & poignant images including characters such as Ahri, Mirielle-chan, and Chibi Mew Ichigo! She does some of the best Tokyo Mew Mew fan art, and I also wish to purraise her Kemonomimi Club pics, animal rights messages, happy cat day and other holiday catgirl illustrations!
Alf874 http://alf874.deviantart.com is an incredible artist known for the beautiful, sexy renderings of cute, sassy, mysterious & powerful ladies of all species including kemonomimi, faeries, elves & mermaids! They include athletic warriors with muscular physiques and elegant mystics of exotic appeal! Their attire ranges from bikinis, maillots, jog bras & compurression shorts to crop tops, skirts, tight leathers & loose yukatas, although some are topless or nude amidst the breathtaking scenery, weapons & mecha!
Ariel the Make-Up Siren http://makeupsiren.deviantart.com is an artist known for beautiful make-up, coiffure, ornamentation & cosplay concepts inspired by various cultures & genres! Her artistry includes the exotic, ornate body paint, jewelry, piercings, saris, feathers, leaves & beads! I am purrticluarly fond of her Eye of the Tiger neko design, and I am also impurressed by her Silk, Cleo, Pocahontas, Amazon, Inca, Goddess, Amphitrit, Summer Land, Dragonball, and magnificent India steampunk looks!
Sword Art Online is the popular anime, manga, game & light novel series purrtaining to the players who are trapped within the deadly virtual reality environment of the titular massively multiplayer online role playing game! Like many RPGs, the players’ characters can be of the various skills, abilities, characteristics, groups and races, such as the Cait Sith who have the splendid feline ears & tail! They include catgirls such as Alicia Rue their Blonde – haired leader, and Sinon the Blue – haired archer / snipurr!
I like Alicia’s pretty jewelry and Sinon’s outfit too! Speaking of the felinoid races, in Filmation’s animated version of Flash Gordon, in addition to Flash’s girlfriend Dale and Ming’s daughter Aura, there were other lovely ladies of various species on the planet Mongo, such as the lion women who served in Ming’s harem and royal guard! They wore bikini tops and shorts, and seemed to be of the same species as Prince Thun of the Lion Men!
Akira M http://akira-m.deviantart.com is an amazing artist known for joyfully sexy illustrations of the ladies of many species & breeds! That includes many catgirls who have peppy, fun dispositions, lovely large ear pinna, tails of various sizes, the eyes, skin & hair of every color! Their outfits are so pretty too, including the kimonos, yukatas, hapi, miko shozoku, bikinis, maillots, cropped tank tops, sailor fukus, maid uniforms & EGL dresses!
I wish to mention the catgirls such as Katrina, Micca, Midoria, Nee, Mai & Mia of the illustrations and Reaching for the Sky comics by Karla ‘nekochank’ Martinez http://nekochank.deviantart.com! They are gorgeously & expressively rendered, but much of the imagery & tales are intended for the mature viewers due to nudity & sexuality!
The kemonomimi and other characters such as Uriko, Kei, Yuki, Hitomi, Megumi and Lulu of the illustrations, purrodies and comics by Shia-Neko-Chan http://shia-neko-chan.deviantart.com are very playful, purretty and powerful, often in the bright, whimsical, sexy situations, but some of the mature – rated imagery is ecchi and “NSFW”!
I will shine the spotlight upon the great art of Kitty Sapphire http://ksapphire8989.deviantart.com which includes the illustrations of the nekomimi, kitsune, cow girls, scorpion girls, nagas, faeries, demons, and other characters of many species & breeds!
The lovely illustrations of Moonstar Goddess Neko’s http://moonstargoddessneko.deviantart.com original Neko character, her fan art, commissions and collaborations are wonderfully expressive and rendered with delicate yet vivacious style and detail!
While not specifically a catgirl artist purr se, the comics, pin-up illustrations and commercial art by Omar Dogan http://omar-dogan.deviantart.com has certainly included beautiful images of catgirls, such as the Space Cat Candy and Darkstalkers’ Felicia!
Yamaneko-ya‘s gorgeous fantasy & furry art has often graced the covers of famous furry anthology comic books such as Furrlough, Genus and Hit The Beach! I especially like the images of the cat and bunny girls, of the various breeds, which are often very graceful, elegant, powerful, confident, sexy, cute! There is a small gallery (including a few nude catgirls) of Yamaneko-ya’s art at the VCL site http://us.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Yamaneko-ya!
I will top off the spotlight by shining it upon Kaizeru http://kaizeru.deviantart.com whose captivating original & fan art includes the girls of all races & species, nya! Their emotions run high from the cordial, playful, flirty & to the somber, sad & scared, and their appurral ranges from the cheongsams, flowy gowns & dresses to the lingerie, swim wear & armor, nya! That will conclude this months spotlight, but it will shine again next month, nya!
