and the mermaids’ guided tour of our county’s undersea realm, nya!
(wearing a Catgirl Island baseball cap, White Dogwood print aloha shirt, Dark Teal cargo shorts & Charcoal Gray Nikes) Aloha y’all, and welcome to The Mew for our monthly reviews & discussions of fun stuff! We’ve convened at Ilyana-sensei’s cottage in the Pirate Cove neighborhood on the NorthWest side of the island, where it’s 78 degrees under the Blue sky & puffy Cumulo-Neko Clouds!
Once a favorite spot for pirates to hide out centuries ago, these days Pirate Cove a residential neighborhood of bungalows, duplexes and villas of the Italianate, Victorian, Gassho, and our own Carolina-Polynesian style of Outer Banksian architecture, amidst gardens full of Hydrangea, Orchids, Irises, Lillies, Morning Glories & Magnolias, so it is perfect for our special Anniversary Show!
It’s an extra special anniversary, because not only is it the 8th Anniversary of The Mew, but it’s been five years since Becca arrived here, one year since the mer- maiden flight of Melanakeami’s hot air balloon tour finally business came true, and it’s been just about 1 year since Ilyana-sensei got her Doctoral degree after many years, so we’ve tried to plan something special for the occasion!
For our May 2014 Mew, we toured much of the island, so this time also in observance of our local Mer-Morial Day holiday, we’ll be touring the surrounding some of the merfolks’ favorite places in the Atlantic waters that comprise the rest of Mew Hanover County (not to be confused with nearby New Hanover County)! I’m Mike, the show’s “Purrducer” and here are The Ladies of The Mew!

Ah, well we’ve got a very big crowd here for our anniversary show, so quickly, what has everyone been up to of late?
It has been mainly the mewsual stuff between my dojo, the gym, the tournyamnets and helping sis’s magick shop on occasion!
Oh I have been spending most of my time at the shop, and we are already purrparing for the Summer Solstice festivities!
Becca and I have stayed busy at the spa, but we have also been in the garden and going to the late night hot salsa dance!
We have been caring for the cats and we have also squeezed in the bit of time for the sports clubs and the DVD watching!
Oh, I have been wreck diving, cataloguing and purrparing the nautical relics for the exhibits, and tending to my garden too!
The yoga studio, the kyudo club, my belly dance troupe and purrparing the robotics club’s Kids Summer Mech Camp.
I have been teaching golf and rehearsing our theatre’s Spring Fantasy & Shakespeare productions which will soon open!
I am glad that I was able to purrticipate in The Mew so soon again when I have not been busy with the purrtrols & papurrwork!
Me too, and since we are hiring more officers, we will be able to purrvide more service and have more flexible schedules too!
Bun and I have been heating up the sand in the beach volleyball play, and curating the exhibits at the mewseum of art, nya!
We have managed the baking and gardening too and I wish to those who volunteered with the mewseum’s body art show!
We were so glad to help with the beautiful show! Otherwise I have been surfing, belly dancing, and helping them at the dock!
I have been caring for my cats, helping with the fishing charters, dancing, volunteering and – and taking more nature photos, nya!
My drumming circle & fishing charter that caught the Blue Fish, Cobias, Croakers Groupurrs, Mackerels, Snappurrs & Tunas, nya!
Teaching Hula class, helping the appurrentice mikos at the shrine, and sewing the costumes for the cosplayers and dancers!
I have been helping mom & dad at the dive-in theater and I can’t believe that my hot air balloon tour business is one year old!
The Ladies of The Mew:
Hai hai, It is the anniversary Mew after all, and we will celebrate the occasions with the special suppurr tonight at Sheila May’s!
Of course since she is the manager and I am the MerMaidtr’d there it was not hard to reserve the large purrivate banquet hall!
I am looking forward to teaching the Summer semester of the photography class and going to Tsu & Tami’s dance recital!
I hear that we might get a sneak peek at the dance tonight! Ne, Lani and I have special sauce, wine & coffee on the menu too!
Yum yum I can’t wait to taste what y’all and Chef Amadahy have planned, but I will have to swim extra laps in the morning!
Sometimes I miss working at Sheila May’s but Ruru-chan and I love our Purramermedic jobs with the with the Surf Purrtrol!
(finishing the cabbage) nom nom nom…
I am looking forward to teaching the advanced Ikebana class this Summer, and attending the big coffee & barista convention!
It seems like only yesterday when you steamed your first latte! Lately I have been traveling and pearl diving, Howboutchoo, Mike?
Since I got back from the G.I. Joe Con which I’ll discuss later in the show, I’ve been drawing, writing, reading, watching movies & TV, listening to music, the radio, and spending time with family & friends! By the way, if y’all would like to know more about The Ladies of The Mew, y’all can read their brief purrofiles at our Meet The Critics page https://mewsings.wordpress.com/meet-the-critics-2/! Well, in addition to the Star Trek original series, Star Trek animated series, and Star Trek: The Next Generation theme, which was a variation of–
Ah- there he goes again!
Ah… I think I missed something!
The Star Trek: The Next Generation theme is a variation of the theme of Star Trek – The Motion Picture which is his all – time favorite movie.
Hai, and he will ramble about it with the least purrovocation, heehee!
OK OK, I’m sorry! Um, ah, I was also just gonna add Mannix, Hawaii 5-O, Lost In Space’s 3rd season theme, and Space Battleship Yamato to the list! Well thanks y’all, I think that was a pretty expedient lightning round for such a big group! Speaking of World War II naval vessels, we’ll be visiting a few of the nearby sunken wrecks during our mermaid – guided tour of some of the local undersea points of interest, along with more of our friends and the–
POLYPHEMUS MOTH, NYA!
(the distracted catgirl with her camera scampurrs after the interesting insect)
Nyow there SHE goes again, heehee!
And so early into the how this time!
The gardens do attract the lovely lepidoptera.
Ah… we’ll be right back after this short break, so don’t go away!
(one short break later…)
(The large group has spurread out into smaller groups to visit different locations, until they will later reconvene for the Aftermew luau suppurr at Sheila May’s Restauraunt. Mielikki has magickally transformed into her aquatic faerie mode to dive into the ocean along with Melanakeami, as they speedily swim underwater far from the shore towards one of the Merfolk NeighMerhoods.)
The NeighMerhood of WaveMerly Place
(This mixed – use neighmerhood is zoned for residential and commercial purrposes, where merfolk of all colors live, work, shop, play and go to school with a strong sense of community purride. In a concentric plan around a central government / municipal office complex radiate several cafes, bistros, bakeries, specialty shops, diverse places of worship & the FarMers’ MerKet. In an outer loop are the suburban homes, schools, medical center, city park, recreational areas and additional entertainment venues.)
The Dive-In Theatre!
So like, this very stately, grand old theater is one of my favorite places for the entertainment when I am not at my own forest grove ampurrtheater or busy on the golf course! Not only do they screen the movies and showcase the live events, but the friendly staff & volunteers take such great pride, create such pleasant positive waves, and do not allow texting during the movies!
Hai, we try to make it a very special , fun big place for the whole community and for our guests from afar! There is the large illuminated marquee above the main entrance just past the coral reef garden! Let’s swim into the lobby so that my mom & dad can guide the tour before the box office opens! Hi Mom! Hi Dad!
(the theatre co- manager merman with a squid ink pen tucked behind an ear) Yo!
(the theatre co- manager mermaid wearing the Fuchsia colored JellyCups) Aloha Mie-sensei!
(JellyCups are bikini tops locally made of hollowed, naturally – deceased, hand – picked matching jellyfish bells, which are available in various colors & cup sizes at several boutiques in the county.)
Aloha! Ogenki desu-ka?
Hai, ogenki desu! The Dive-In Theatre is a very historic undersea cinema, and one of the few in the region that can still show the 70mm prints, but the screenings are mostly digital these days. We have 8 theaters in which we screen not just the big blockbuster movies but also the independent and foreign films, plus the selected screenings of TV shows, children’s matinees, midnight movies, live performances, and occasional festivals too!
Hai, our larger theaters are even equipped with the balconies and the orchestra pit! So, we are in the main entrance lobby, and here is the large luminous map of the place! So over here is the box office, there are the restrooms, and one of our snack bars! The Shrimp Popcorn is our best – selling treat, but the selection includes the Oysters, Scallops, Clams, Sea Squirts, Chocolate & Licorice! For some of the movie premiers we try to plan the family – friendly fun activities too!
Hai we had a costume contest for For Avengers: Age of Ultron we and we will have similar activities later this year for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens! Of course there are many other movies between those that we are excited about, such as Ant-Man, Jurassic World, Tomorrowland, Mad Max: Fury Road, Terminator Genisys, Fantastic Four, The H8ful Eight, Spectre, Jemm, Yoga Hosers, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 and Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2!
Oh it seems to be a totally awesome year at the cinema! I am also looking forward to Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, The Peanuts Movie, Hotel Transylvania 2, and Minions! So like, among this theater’s festivals is their Halloween Extravaganza, which includes the totally awesome decorations, cosplay, and the scary movies marathon! Well, while we are discussing the topic of the year in cinema, now we would like to reveal the results of our county – side survey of
our favorite films of 2005, 1995, 1985, 1975 & 1965!
So like, in the March Mew we nominated our favorite movies of 2005, and since we are at the theatre, we will continue the topic with our favorite films of 1995, 1985, ’75, ’65 & ’55! Toy Story was our #1 favorite for 1995, and our other favorites were 12 Monkeys, Apollo 13, Babe, Batman Forever, Braveheart, Casino, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Goldeneye, Mallrats, Memories, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers; The Movie, Pocahontas, The Quick and the Dead, Sailor Moon S, Tank Girl, Under Siege 2 and Whisper of the Heart!
Our favorite 5 of ’85 were Back to the Future, Brazil, The Breakfast Club, Commando and Fandango! The others were Angel’s Egg, Beyond Thunderdome, The Black Cauldron, Cocoon, The Color Purple, Day of the Dead, Dirty Pair: Affair at Nolandia, The Emerald Forest, The Goonies, Ladyhawk, Leda: The Fantastic Adventure of Yohko, Legend, Mr. Vampire, Night on the Galactic Railroad, Peewee’s Big Adventure, Ran, Silverado, Urusei Yatsura: Remember My Love, Vampire Hunter D, Weird Science and Young Sherlock Holmes!
Jaws was our clear #1 top favorite film of 1975, which is impressive considering the list also included The Apple Dumpling Gang, Barry Lyndon, Dog Day Afternoon, The Man Who Would Be King, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Rollerball, Three Days of the Condor, The Wind and the Lion, Death Race 2000, The Eiger Sanction, Escape to Witch Mountain, The Land That Time Forgot, The New Original Wonder Woman, Return of the Pink Panther, The Terror of Mecha Godzilla, and Trilogy of Terror!
The Sound of Music was our #1 favorite for 1965, and the rest of our top 10 included The Agony and the Ecstasy, Cat Ballou, Doctor Zhivago, For A Few Dollars More, The Great Race, Help!, The Ipcress File, My Fair Lady and Thunderball! The rest of our top 20 included Battle of the Bulge, Beach Blanket Bingo Doctor Who and the Daleks, Flight of the Phoenix, The Hill, Invasion of the Astro Monster, She, Ski Party, That Darn Cat and Von Ryan’s Express! That will conclude our movie list, and here is Mie-sensei again to discuss the
Witches of East End The Complete First Season DVD!
Hai! I just finished watching the TV series adaptation of the novels by Melissa se la Cruz, pertaining to the awesome women of the magickal Beauchamp family! The great cast stars Julia Ormond as the matriarch Joanna, Jenna Dewan-Tatum as daughter Freya, Rachel Boston as daughter Ingrid, Madchen Amick as their fun Aunt Wendy who can transform into a cat, Eric Winter as Freya’s fiance Dash, Daniel Di Tomosso as his brother Killian and Virginia Madsen as their mom Penelope. The series aired for 2 seasons on Lifetime from 2013 to 2014 but sadly then it was cancelled.
So like, there is a fatalistic family reincarnation curse across centuries in that Joanna has tried to hide from her daughters in their current life, but soon they discover their true bewitching aspect and other occult situations. I think it is a delightful show full of the great characters, performances, clothes, architecture, cinematography, the very good production values, and the pretty FX! It has the good mix of the family & friend relationships, mythology, action, humor, drama and seriously sexy scenes! Some of the pilot episode was even filmed just the few miles from here in Wilmington!
The 4 disk R1 NTSC standard DVD set includes the 10 episodes of the 1st season which total 417 minutes. They are presented in 1.78:1 widescreen with English & Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, optional English SDH, Spanish, Portuguese & French subtitles, and the few special features of a 6.5 minute discussion of the series by the actors, 2 minutes of deleted scenes, a 1 minute gag reel, and a 1.5 minute kitty blooper! Not only was it entertaining, but I got the DVD for about $10, so it was a totally awesome find, fur shur! Now here are Keami-chan’s mom & dad to review the
Game of Thrones The Complete Fourth Season DVD!
Arigato! The TV series Game of Thrones shown on HBO is the superb adaptation of the fantasy novels by author George R.R. Martin, who is also a producer of the show! It is the lavish epic tale of so many great characters with the great dialogue amidst the political struggles, family relationships, warfare and supernatural situations, with plenty of the romance, sex, combat violence & bloody gore too! The series is so very well written, directed, photographed & edited with the perfect cast, costumes, make-up, props, sets, locations, FX, sound & music!
Among the many great characters across the lands are Tyrian, Jaime, Cersei,Tywin, Joffrey, Bronn, Olenna, Arya, Sansa, Bran, Varys, Baelish, Jon, Ghost, Samwell, Gilly, Ygritte, Mance, Brienne, The Hound, Stannis, Melisandre, Davos, Roose, Ramsay, Theon, Oberyn, Ellaria, Shae, Morment, Missandei, Grey Worm, Daenerys and her dragons! The Region 1, NTSC standard DVD set for the 4th season is very handsomely packaged, with the 5 disks & booklet clenched by the fold out boards within the sturdy slipcase & the outer cardboard sleeve!
The 5 disks contain the 10 episodes of the 4th season, which total 545 minutes, plus over 111 minutes of the excellent bonus features! The video is beautifully presented in the 16:9 widescreen format of the 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The Dolby digital audio is presented in the spoken language choices of English 5.1, French 5.1 and Spanish 2.0 with the optional subtitles in English, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Complex Chiese, Korean and Thai! The very legible subtitles are of the White bold sans serif font with a fine Black outline.
There are optional audio commentaries by members of the cast & crew for all of the episodes except for # 3. Episodes 9 & 10 have 2 commentaries apiece, and there are further bonus features on disks 1 & 5. Disk 1 has a retrospective of Season 3 which is 25 minutes long; the “Bastards of Westeros” featurette which is 7.25 minutes long; and “New Characters and Locations” which is just over 7:5 minutes long. Those documentary featurettes have comments by several of the cast & crew, but now I will let my husband continue the DVD review!
Arigato, dear! Episode 1’s commentary is by executive producers / directors / writers D.B. Weiss & David Benioff with Pedro Pascal (Oberyn). Episode 2’s commentary is by George R.R. Martin & director Alex Graves with Jack Gleeson (Jofrey) & Natalie Dormer (Margaery). Episode 4’s commentary is by director Michelle MacLaren & director of photography Robert McLachlan. Episode 5’s commentary is by Sophie Turner (Sansa) & Maisie Williams (Arya)! Episode 6’s commentary is by director Alik Sakharov & writer / co-producer Bryan Cogman!
Episode 7’s commentary is by Aiden Gillen (Littlefinger), Kate Dickie (Lysa), producer Chris Newman and executive producer Bernadette Caulfield. Episode 8’s commentary is by the production designer Deborah Riley, costume designer Michele Clapton and director of photography Anette Haellmick. Episode 9 has one commentary track by actors Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Rose Leslie (Varitte) and John Bradley (Samuel Tarly); with another commentary by Game of Thrones’ visual FX producer Steve Kullback & visual FX supervisor Joe Baur!
Episode 10 has a commentary by Rory McCann (The Hound), Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) & director Alex Graves, and another commentary by Peter Dinklage (Tyrian), Lena Headey (Cersei) & Nikolai Coster-Waldau (Jamie)! Disk 5 has a deleted scene of Bronn & Shae which is almost 2 minutes, and a deleted scene of Dany & Missandei which is just over 1 minute! “The Behind the Battle of the Wall” featurette is just over 37 minutes long; and “The Fallen: A Roundtable” is a 29.5 minute chat with several actors whose characters have perished!
However, I will not spoil any of the plot be revealing who those actors or characters are! To top it all off is the very amusing 2 minute long Season 4 Blooper Reel! Oh, and the fold out 5.5″ x 7.5″ boards of the case are graced by great Black & White portraits of Dany, Brienne, Jaime, Tyrian, Tywin, Cersei, Sasa, Jon, Bran, Arya, and The Hound! It is such a great boxed set of a great TV series, and I will certainly recommend it to our fellow Game of Thrones fans! Now here is our daughter Melanakeami again, to present her review of
The Avengers: Age of Ultron!
Avengers: Age of Ultron is one of this year’s movies that I have most eagerly anticipated! I have enjoyed the purrior movies a& TV shows of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series, such as the Hulk, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man movies, the Agent Carter and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, and the purrior Avengers movie which we reviewed in the May 2012 Mew! I am also a fan of writer / director Joss Whendon’s movies & shows such as Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dolls House, Dr. Horrible, Cabin in the Woods and Much Ado About Nothing!
The wonderful cast includes Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as The Black Widow, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Helmsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Linda Cardellini as his wife Laura, Paul Bettany as the voice of Jarvis the computer and also as The Vision, James Spader as the voice of Ultron, Elizabeth Olsen as The Scarlet Witch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Cobie Smulder as Maria Hill, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Don Cheadle as War Machine, and Claudia Kim as Helen Cho!
As if that were not enough, there are also appearances by Haylee Atwill as Peggy Carter, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Stellan Skarsgard as Erick Selvig, Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Henry Goodman as Hydra’s Dr. List, Thomas Kretschmann as Baron Strucker, Julie Delpy as Madame B, Andy Serkis as Klaw, Kerry Condon as the pretty Irish voice of Friday the computer, plus brief cameos by Stan Lee and Josh Brolin, but I should not say more about those! Pepper and Jane are mentioned but are not in the movie, and sadly there was no mention of Phil Coulson or his agents.
The movie seemed rather rushed and too short, but it was brimming with the more relaxed humorous & serious character moments betwixt the missions, to the building of the Marvelous mythology and the spectacular epic battles in different countries! I didn’t care for some of the camera & editing techniques which seemed too wobbly, fast, swishy ‘n zoomy at times, but I thought the designs, dialogue, actors, costumes, props, stunts, choreography, sets, locations, FX, sounds & music are great, and a nice preview trailer for Marvel’s Ant Man movie which I am looking forward to!
Betwixt Ex Machina and Age of Ultron, it has been the good month for movies about androids and the scientists who create them!
They are both very popular! Oh look- here come Mina-sensei and Dina-sensei! They are among our frequent patrons! Aloha y’all
(a Platinum-Blond haired faerie in her aquatic form) Hi Hi!
(a Dark Brown haired faerie in her aquatic form) Aloha!
For those who have not met my sisters, Alua-mina-sensei is the theatre’s artistic director and Wyrdina-sensei is the technical director of the our theatre in the grove of the island’s maritime forest!
It is a wonderful ancient place accessible by land or sea, where they produce the great plays and other performances!
Arigato! Our sister Thyna is down here too, but she stopped by the library, while we swam ahead to buy our tickets for Age of Ultron!
Oh your timing is perfect, as we just finished reviewing that movie, but we will not say any more about it!
We will open the box office soon, and y’all will be first in line!
Until then, perhaps y’all could tell us about the recent movies we have seen!
Okay! Mina, why don’t you discuss that other recent super hero movie we saw,
Batman vs. Robin (plot spoiler warning)!
Hai! I have enjoyed the recent DC Comics OVAs, especially Assault on Arkham and Throne of Atlantis, so I was eager to see Batman vs, Robin which is a sequel to Son of Batman, starring the the voices of Jason O’Mara as Batman, Stuart Allan as his son Damian, Sean Maher as Nightwing, David McCallum as Alfred, Jeremy Sisto as the villain Talon, Robin Atkin Downes as his boss the Owl Grandmaster, Grey Griffina as Samantha and Al Yankovic as the villain Dollmaker, plus Flashbacks with Kevin Conroy as the voice of Thomas Wayne & Griffin Cluck as young Bruce!
The 80 minute long, PG-13 rated animated movie was written by J,M, Dematteis, directed by Jay Oliva and edited by Christopher D. Lozinski, with the powerfully ethereal music score by Frederik Wiedmann, and the casting / voice direction by Andrea Romano! The plot pertains to the strained relationship of Batman / Bruce Wayne and his son Damian / Robin whilst battling the secret society known as The Court of Owls, and their top agent Talon who wants tries to influence Damian! It splendidly bookends with Son of Batman, with the major ramifications for their relationships!
The character & FX animation are top notch, and the background art is quite glorious, especially the images of Wayne Manor! There is such amazing fight choreography with about 10 or 12 thrilling actions scenes, such as Batman & Robin vs the Dollmaker and his subjects, Damian vs thugs, Batman vs the Owls, a car chase, Damian vs Nightwing, Talon vs Nightwing, Talon vs thugs, and the big battle between Batman, Nightwing & Alfred against Talon and his troops in Wayne manor and the Batcave, with very brutal, bloody, visceral violent martial arts and weapons combat!
Damian might seem bratty, but he is a very smart & competent but confuzzled, frustrated kid with the overprotective father who has huge secrets to keep from the world. It seems rushed & short, but I was impressed by the very spooky, creepy, gothic & macabre ambiance of the manor, cave, the rooftops of Gotham, the depths of the Owls’ lair, and the disturbing lair of the creepy Dollmaker and his unfortunately eerily transformed child victims, and I will give the movie a good grade of B+ as in Batman! That is it for me, so I should let Dina chat about the other movie we just saw–
Hai! Ex Machina is a new science fiction film written and directed by Alex Garland, who also wrote 28 Days Later and Sunshine! The movie stars Domhall Gleeson as the computer programmer who gets to meet his rich, genius reclusive boss Nathan who is portrayed by Oscar Isaac, who wants Caleb to conduct the Turing Test for artificial intelligence upon his latest creation, a very pretty & sympathetic gynoid named Ava who is portrayed by Alicia Vikander. The only other person there is Kyoko the quiet maid who is so gracefully portrayed by Sonoya Mizuno.
Soon Caleb suspects that Nathan has not been an honest or nice host, whilst Caleb and Ava grow quite fonder of each other during the week in the amazing wilderness home and research facility full of amazing technology, voyeuristic cameras and unkind secrets! It is has a very fascinating, captivating, smart, seductive and suspenseful plot of the brilliant but mean and sad Frankenstein – like qualities, and other disturbing moments. I should also mention that there is nudity, sexuality, violence, terse language & creepy ambiance that is not for the widdle kitties!
It was splendidly edited and unfolds at the leisurely pace for much tension with the slow build and twisty plot! There I think the performances are beautifully superb amidst the impressive designs, cinematography, FX and music! The sets and locations are almost stars of the movie too! Some of it was filmed at the beautiful Juvet Landscape Hotel in Valldalen, Norway, and now I want to go to there! I should not say too much more about the movie, lest I further spoil the plot, but I will give Alex Garland, his Ex Machina, its cast, crew and scenery the very high praise!
I wonder how many times Jeanie has seen Ex Machina or Ultron?
I believe that she and her robotics club camped out for those!
Honey, I suppose that we should start to open the box office!
Well, thank you all for the reviews and for choosing our theater!
The next destination on the tour is
The FarMERs’ MERket, fur shur!
(A short swim from the theater, Dessy, Nyssy, Daytona & Avana-Ruru visit the bustling FarMERs’ MERket full of delicious, nutritious foods from the land and sea. Venders’ booths are brimming with locally caught Bluefish, Cobias, Crevalle jacks, Croakers, Flounders, Groupurrs, Mackerels, Marlins, Mullets, Pompano, Sea Trout, Snappurrs, Striped Bass, Wahoos, Oysters, Crabs, Eels, Shrimp, Lobster, Calamari, Conch & many more delicacies from the deep. There are also herbs, fruits, nuts & vegetables, such as another tasty cabbage for Avana-Ruru.)
(There are sauces, seeds, salts, seasonings, syrups, sodas, stocks and cereals; plus sushi and sashimi made to order. Like the island’s market, The FarMERs MERKet offers plenty of non-food items too, such as the stores of supplies, tools, instruments, books, furnishings, arts, crafts, decor, ornaments, and garments. Dessy, Nyssy, Daytona & Avana-Ruru then purroceed to one of the nearby charming boutiques to browse amongst the jewelry and fashionable accessories, although the manatee would purrfur to linger by the fresh purroduce.)
This is one of my favorite places to shop! It is where I got my ears, tail fin & belly button piercings! Oh lookit those new spirals, barbells & rings! Daytona should get one!
They are very alluring, but I purrfur to wear less jewelry so that there is less drag, and I do not want the shinies to attract any fish that might nip at me during a marathon!
I can see that. Oh they have more Jellycups in stock too- and in the rare Sea Nettle style! Oh gosh I hope they have them in my cup size… yattah! I need to try these on!
(tugs on Dessy’s tail to get her attention)
What’s that? Oh you’re right, I guess we have strayed off the topic!
Alrighty, let’s put these items in the basket for now, and finish the shopping after our reviews!
Hai, we can discuss some of the
toys and collectibles such as Hasbro’s Marvel Legends
Infinite Series HellCat and Spider-Woman action figures!
Hai I was very pleased to find these recent action figures of two of my favorite Marvel Comics heroes, Pasty Walker Hellstrom as The HellCat and Jessica Drew as the Spider – Woman! Pasty had been around the comics for many years, but she did not become the HellCat until Avengers #144 in 1976 when she inherited the costume that was formerly worn by Tigra! Then in 1977, Jessica first appeared as Spider – Woman in Marvel Spotlight #32, and later in her own series! Patsy is 5’8″ & 135 lbs, whilst Jessica is 5’10” & 130 lbs, so these 6 1/8″ figures are just over the 1/11th scale!
The Hellcat has the graceful catlike agility, the sharp claws, hip – length Red hair and wears the skin tight Yellow & Blue costume with the mask & sash! Spider – Woman has the super strength, speed, clinging, flying, pheromones, the bioelectrical venom blasts, the shoulder – length Black hair and wears the tight Red & Yellow costume! These two figures are among the six figures of the “Build – A – Thanos” series, along with Captain America, Batroc, The Hulk, and Iron Man Mk. 43! Each of those figures includes some of the pieces needed to assemble a figure of evil Thanos!
I think these two figures are very well designed, sculpted and painted, with their individual physiques, expressions, coiffures, gestures and details! They are both highly posable, with the points of the articulation within the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, sternum, hips, thighs, knees and ankles! Furthermore, Spider – Woman’s upper arms are also adjustable! She has the more voluptuous curves with the more defined throat & collar bones; whilst HellCat has the leaner, lithe physique with the more defined, tight abs! Each heroine is accompanied by the widdle accessory parts too!
HellCat is equipped with the 3″ long combat baton, which can separate into the halves for the two – handed combat! Spider -Woman includes two pairs of her removable translucent underarm “wings”; one pair is folded up and the other pair are fully spread out for the glide! I think these figures are excellent, and I have found the home for them upon the shelf next to their friends Storm, Captain Marvel, and The Black Cat! I guess that is all for my review, so I should let Tona tell us about
Mattel’s Monster High Toralei vinyl figure!
Hai! Since 2010 we have enjoyed Mattel’s Monster High line of fashion dolls, accessories and other toys, plus the books, magazines, and the animated episodes! Monster High is the supernatural school which is attended by the teen sons and daughters of the famous monsters such as the Frankenstein, Dracula, Mummy, Werewolf, Sea Creature, Yeti, Phantom, Ghost and so forth! It is so amazing how very many characters there are now, including the faculty, students, siblings and visitors, and one of our favorite characters is Toralei Stripe the werecats’ 15 year old daughter!
Voiced by actress America Young, Toralei and her twin besty friends Meowlody & Purrsephone are the mischievous catgirls who often get into the troubles! She has the Orangey skin,, Red-Orangey hair, the Green eyes, and the lovely supple tail! Her birthday is August 20thm she has a pet saber toothed kitty named Sweet Fang, and according to Toralei’s page at the Monster High Wiki http://monsterhigh.wikia.com/wiki/Toralei_Stripe, her favorite subject is drama, her least favorite subject is math, her favorite foods are anchovies and milk shakes, but not mixed together!
There are several different dolls and figures of her including the recent “Fusion” series in which she and other characters got crossed together! The latest addition to my collection is the 4.25″ tall chibi – style vinyl figurine of her! Given the exaggerated, cartoonier proportions of the style, such as the larger head and tail, I am not sure of the scale but it is very cute! She is smiling and in the reaching pose as if she wants to paw at something! She is wearing the Black mini skirt ensemble with the tights, Red, White & Black striped skirt, fingerless gloves & toeless high heeled boots!
She is not posable, but she will stand up just fine between her soles and tail. The sculpt and paint are precisely intricate, from her neko ear pinna, the Black stripes upon the bangs of her sassy short bob cut coiffure, the minute details of her eyes and the widdle whiskers upon the cheeks to the trim of the gloves, the cuffs of the sleeves, the stripes upon the tights, her Skull belt buckle, the lacings of the boots and the curves of the tail! Even the illustrated 3″ x 4.5″ x 5″ window box is peppy and pretty, and I hope to get the Clawdeen Wolf figure next! Now here is Nyssy to discuss the
Monster High Purrsephone & Meowlody plush dolls!
Hai! In addition to the fashion dolls and widdle figures are the plushy dolls of the characters and I recently got the exclusive werecat sister pack of Purrsephone & Meowlody at the reduced sale sale price! Lucky! They are vivaciously cute but mischievous 15 year old werecat girls who are known for the pranks which they assist Toralei with! Their favorite hobbies are catnaps & gymnastics, their favorite food is ice cream, their favoritest school subject is Mad Science, and their least favorite is Home Ick!
Sadly, one of them was allergic to the other’s pet canary and they had to give the bird away. They do not say much in the cartoons, but their meowy / nyan voices are by actress America Young who also voices Toralei! Both sisters are Gray & White with Golden eyes & long slender tails, and while they seem identical they do have some personality differences, and there are certain ways to tell them apart. Purrsephone has Black hair with Gray streaks, whilst Meowlody has White hair with Gray streaks!
Purrsephone has a White tummy with black stripes, whilst Meowlody has a Black tummy with White stripes! Purrsephone has White stripes upon her right arm & left leg, whereas Meowlody is the mirror – image with White stripes upon her right arm & left leg! Their matching attire is very similar with matching vests, skirts, bracelets, hair ribbons, Red shoes & one fingerless glove apiece, but Purrsephone wears the ribbon, bracelets & glove on the right side whereas Meowlody wears them on the left!
The very soft and huggable dolls are made of polyester and are 11″ tall from the soles of their shoes to the tips of their neko ear pinna! Their curved tails are about 6.5″ long, and their hip – length hair is made of the shakeable tassel – like ribbons! Their tummies are is framed by their sleeveless, pleated vests and the Red mini-skirts. Purrsephone’s vest is Red with Black trim and Meowlody’s is Black with White trim! Kawai! Now they are lounging upon the ottoman with other plushy dolls in my room!
It sounds like a good month for the spider & cat lady collections!
Hai hai we are very fortunate to be able to indulge our hobbies!
It is a good pony month too, which our friends will discuss at the
Giant Marine Iguanas Crossing!
(About 3 kittymeters west of the island in the Atlantic Ocean, Captain Yvonne’s fishing charter yacht, a 1985 Hatteras 60 Convertible, would mewsually be boarded by a group of eager anglers hoping for taut lines reeling in big fish, however, purrsently only Yvonne, Tara-chan & Trini-chan are aboard, with the 11′ long, dappurr orca girl Formality leisurely leaning upon the starboard side. Instead of hoping to catch a fish, they are watching for the Giant Marine Iguanas. Meanwhile, their two cats Emmy & Zuli purrfurred to remain at the marina, sunning themselves upon the dock.)
We have reached one of the sweet spots for Rappy watching, nya! Rappy is one of the Giant Marine Iguanas who migrates to and from the island, nya!
We might also see some dolphins, sailfish, herons and – and turtles out here too, so I am ready with my camera, nya!
I hope we might see some tasty tarpon or squid too! I’ll dive under and letcha know what is lurking down there!
At 50′ long and 30 tons, the Giant Marine Iguanas are the largest critters in these parts! They are amphibious and sometimes nap upon the beach.
Well, aside from any whales, they are the biggest in the local waters, and even the island’s Giant Cave Slugs don’t get over 48′ long, nya!
They are purretty smart and docile! They do not mind if you hitch a ride on their long back, purrvided that you are polite and give them a treat!
Rappy even helped Melankeami to tow her hot air balloon back home after her first test flight last year, nya!
(resurfacing) The iguanas are on their way, but we have the bit of time for our reviews before they pass by! Tara-chan, why don’t you tell us about the
My Little Pony: Equstria Girls McDonald’s Happy Meal Toys!
Hai, but I will try to be brief before they arrive, nya! Well, I cannot believe that it is was one whole year ago when we reviewed the plastic My Little Pony Friendship is Magic figurines, from the McDonald’s restaurants, and – and nyow there is another batch to collect, nya! The 2014 series included Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Celestia, Luna, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and – and DJ Pon 3, nya! This year’s series includes the pony and – and the human Equestria Girl versions of Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Twilight Sparkle and – and Fluttershy, nya!
You can get the toys with the meal in the purretty pony box or by themselves, nya! The pony versions are about 1.5″ tall at the shoulder, and – and Pinkie Pie is about 3″ tall from hoof to mane with her head raised up, whereas her human version is about 5.25″ tall, from the soles of her boots to the purrked tips of her equine ears, nya! Each pony has the 2.75″ long fiber tail, the Fluttershy and – and Twilight ponies have the 1.75″ long wings, each human doll has the 7″ long fibre ponytail coiffure, and – and each toy includes the widdle comb of the different color, nya!
Each figure has a totally different sculpt and pose, and – and the pony figurines are not posable, but the articulation of the human dolls varies, nya. For example, Applejack’s human arms & legs turn, Pinkie Pi’s human head turns, Twilight Sparkle and – and Fluttershy are inarticulate, but they do have the does have the lovely wings of the 3.25″ span, nya! They are in the cute outfits with the boots, short sleeves and – and the short skirts, with the Cutie Marks upon their skirts and – and their faces, nya! Nyow here is Trini-chan to to continue our pony report with her review of the
My Little Pony: FIENDship is Magic Mini-Series, nya!
Each of the 5 issues of this pony mini – series from IDW were published weekly in April, and told the origin tales of major villains! Each issue contained an uninterrupted 22 page tale colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake and edited by Bobby Curnow, followed by 6 pages of ads and the choice of at least two variant covers!
The regular cover has villain portrait by Amy Meberson and the subscribers’ cover has the ornate Dia de Muertos skull motif by Sara Richard! Issue #1 has the sad, tragic origin tale of King Sombra, with Princesses Twilight Sparkle & Cadance in the framing sequence, and major characters Princess Amore, Chestnut Falls and Radiant Hope!
The tale was written by Jeremy Whitley who writes the Princeless comics, and the ponies even have a cute dragon bank that looks like Sparky! The tale was illustrated by Brenda Hickey, with the total of four variant covers, including the retailer incentive cover by Sara Richard, and retailer exclusive cover by Jamie Tydall and Stacy Raven!
Issue #2 has the origin of Tirek, written by Christina Rise and illustrated by Tony Fleecs. Tirek was the the villain from the very first pony cartoon in 1984; and he also appeared in the last year’s 4th season finale of the TV series. Also appearing are his brother Scorpan, their king & queen parents, evil mentor Sendek and a poor captive unicorn.
Issue #3 has the origin of the three Sirens Sonata Dusk, Aria Blaze, Adagio Dazzle, written by Ted Anderson and illustrated by Agnes Garbowska. The tale of their magicial musical fights with the wizard Starswirl is amusing with the various song homages, and it is also a sort of prequel to the last year’s Equestrial Girls: Rainbow Rocks movie!
Issue #4 has the origin of Nightmare Moon written by Heather Nuhfer & illustrated by Tony Fleecs, which felt like one of the bigger tales, including Nightmare Moon’s affect on Equestria, her battle with Princess Celestia & sad Luna moments. Finally, issue #5 has the origin of Queen Chrysalis written by Katie Cook & illustrated by Andy Price!
That tale stars the mane six ponies and Spike who converse with the imprisoned villainess and trade a few tales of her infamy, with some rousing anecdotes and surprises! That will conclude my review of this great mini – series and this month’s the pony report , but we have lots more comic book reports, including Formality’s review of IDW’s
Jemm and The Holograms #1!
Arigato! I was glad to see this new comic book based upon Hasbro’s 1980’s Jemm and the Holograms cartoon! Can you believe that was three decades ago? Myayr must be right about that hyper – drive feeling! For those who came in late, it is about the quartet rock girl band comprised of Jerrica alias Jemm the lead vocalist with Pink hair, Aja the lead guitarist with Blue hair, Shana the drummer with Purple hair, and Kimber the keytarist with Red hair, and their mean girl rival band The Misfits, who should not to be confuzzled with that other great rock band of the same name!
I wondering how it might be similar or different, and if it was going to be set in the 80’s or the present, and I was very pleased to read the comic’s author Kelly Thompson’s message in the 1st issue, which discussed how to faithfully & respectful adapt the 80’s animated TV series to the 2015 comic book medium! From the looks of the 1st issue it looks as if they have marvelously succeeded! It has the uninterrupted 20 page introductory chapter plus that message page, the 4 character profile pages and the 7 pages of the ads, all sammiched within the choice of the 12 different covers!
The tale by author Kelly Thompson & artist Ross Campbell, was colored by M. Victoria Robado, lettered by Robbie Robbins & edited by John Barber! The 12 covers include 2 by Campbell, 5 by Amy Meberson, 1 by Sara Richard, 1 by Agnes Garbowska, 2 by Artgerm, 1 by Amanda Conner & Paul Mounts! I was furtherly optimistic given IDW’s great pony comics! However, the band is off to a less than optimistic start when Jerrica has trouble singing whilst they shoot their first music video. Some brief bickering ensues and she goes home, when something very unusual occurs!
She is greeted by Synergy the beautiful holographic A.I. girl, who reveals the secret laboratory left for Jerrica from her late father! When the ladies learn that Synergy can create the realistic holographic illusions, Jerria uses the Jemstar earring interface to create her glamorous, shimmering, realistic holographic alter ego named Jemm, who is 6″ taller with the voluptuous flowy ankle- length hair, the sexy tight off – shoulder dress and matching high heels! This really perks up her spirit, and she has the new unbridled enthusiasm to resume the band’s musical performance!
I think it is a very faithful adaptation with the good spirit and such gorgeous art! The characters, fashions and scenery are beautifully drawn, the coloring and lighting FX are so bright and pretty, there is an excellent variety of fonts for the dialogue and sound FX, and the graphic narrative excellently flows from panel to panel, with many wide panoramic panels, a couple of half – page pics, an impressive two – page spread of the stage scene, and the vivacious final full – page pic! One of the ads is a full – page pic for The Misfits debut in the next issue!
I am also glad that the tale is uninterrupted by the ads which are placed afterwards, and I wish all of the other publishers did it that way too! So between all of that goodness, the character profiles which greatly help with the introduction, Kelly’s message, and the great cover art (I have the “plugged in edition” of Ross’s art with a Red foil logo), I was very pleased with Jemm and the Holograms and I hope that it will appeal to both the older and the newer fans! Ah ah, I guess that I got carried away and rambled on, but we still have plenty of time for Vonny’s review of DC Comics’
Convergence Catwoman #1!
Oh that is fine and very thorough, nya! We are big fans of Selina Kyle, Alias Cat Woman who celebrates her 75th anniversary in the comics this year, because she purremiered in Batman #1 in the Spurring of 1940, nya! Convergence Catwoman is a two – issue miniseries which ties into DC’s big Convergence event, in which the different versions of the DC characters from across the many decades and the purrallel worlds are involved in another crisis of the multiverse, nya! However I am only reading this’un, so there is much of the convergence I am unfamiliar with, nya!
It is purriced at $3.99 and has the 32 pages compurrised of the 22 page tale of “Schrodinger’s Cat” plus the 2 pages about Selina’s career and the 8 page of the ads. I wish the ads did not interrupt the tale, and were all afterwards, nya! There is much great creative talent in the credits, as it was written by Justin Gray, illustrated by Ron Randall, colored by Gabe Eltaeb, lettered by Pat Brosseau, edited by Marie Javins, assistantly edited by Holzherr and Kraiger, with the mane cover art by Claire Wendling and the variant cover art by Chip Kidd, Jim Balent and Andy Parks, nya!
I was delighted to see that Ron Randall http://ronrandall.com was the artist because I purrticularly liked his issues of Wonder Woman, Supergirl, the Idol mini-series, his jungle girl art and Trekker series http://trekkercomic.com, nya! He is no stranger to Cat Woman either, and in this tale she is wearing her former Purrple costume with the opurra – length gloves, the thigh – high boots, the tail and the whip, nya! In the purrologue in the city of Metropolis she duels a gang of roller girls over the jewelry of a spoiled heiress, but luckily she leaves purrior to a big explosion, nya!
Then the tale jumps ahead a year later, when the city is under a giant dome in which she purrotects the residents of the Suicide Slum boroughs from purredatory criminals ,such as the Intergang group, whilst there are no other supurr heroes purresent, nya. Much of this is a mystery, but purrhaps it is explained in the other Convergence issues, nya! It is the tough time in the city, when cash and gold have no value compurred to medicine, food and other urgent supplies, but there is plenty of the action as she pounces upon her enemy purrey and rescues the citizens, nya!
Then there is a surpurrising epic development for the cliffhanger which involves Batman & heroes from other domed cities, nya! I should not further spoil the plot, but I will just say how much I liked the art, especially how Cat Woman is so beautifully drawn in the Purrple again and in the great purrspective of the dynamic poses, nya! It is purrticularly nice in several nice large panels, the 4 full – page pics, and the 2 wide panoramic spurreads, and I am curious to see what Selina will do next, nya! That is all for my comic book report, and it looks like the iguanas are near, nya!
Yay here they come! Let’s get a photo of Formality swimming with them!
(happily snapping the photos of the huge wonderful critters) Yattah, nya!
(smiles with a shaka hand gesture as she poses beside an iguana) Hee!
While we are here on the surface, the tour will continue deepurr below in
the kelp maze, forest & fields, nya!
(Scintillating crepuscular rays of sunlight stream into hundreds of square MERiameters where colossal Sequoia – sized Kelp and Seaweed thrive the deep Blue depths. This destination spanning the rural and wilderness oceanic areas of the county is carefully zoned into park, natural forest, and farmed aquacultural sectors. Bioluminescent glyphs serve as boundary and location markers, lest the inexpurrienced explorer get lost amidst the gently waving giant flora, and many acres of farm territory are frightfully fashioned into a vast kelp maze for the annual spooky Halloween fun).
(wearing a custom purrototype diving appurratus) Wow Jen these suits of yours are great! It seems very secure with the intuitive instruments!
(also wearing a custom purrototype diving appurratus) Arigato. I hope to eventually market them in various sizes, styles, colors and options.
(the Redhead, Red Drum – tailed mermaid wearing Magenta – colored JellyCups) They are fancy but I am glad that I do not need to wear one!
Well, as functional and as purrotective as these suits & other Scuba gear are, they are not as comfortable as the JellyCups or other bikinis!
That is true for these Mk.I suits, but purrhaps later versions will be more like bikinis. Fortunately, it is my modeling swimwear that pays for these.
Still, I guess when folks are all tricked out like that with all of those special gadgets, then I bet y’all won’t be needing me for a tour guide!
Well, we might have some fancy electronic equipment, but you know all the purrime spots and the stories to tell, so I think your job is safe!
Hai, Whether we use the technology or the magickal devices, we would still purrfur the company of our friends for the happier expurrience.
We are glad that y’all are able to visit and spend more time down here! We are also eager to see the new animatronic FX for Halloween!
Oh me too! Jenjen and her robotics club build the neatest things for the amphibious spooky Halloween attractions to haunt the mazes!
Arigato, Those will be among the purractical purrojects at this Summer’s mech camp and we hope that more mer-kids will wish to attend.
We have posters & brochures about it at the Library, the Art School & the Merseum! We hope to attend B.B.’s nocturnal nature hikes too!
We are definitely planning to expand the night hikes to include more routes along the lake and the river for the swimmers!
There has been much more interest in the kelp maze too, which will hopefully further benefit your Sea Dragon Sanctuary.
It is a great cause that we are proud of! We have reached the middle of the forest, so perhaps this is a good spot to hear
B.B.’s review of Furry Tails #1!
Sure! Antarctic Press publishes some of my favoritest comic books such as Ninja High School and Gold Digger, so I was eager to get this mewest anthropurrmorphic anthology comic book full of tales by some great artists & authors! It is purriced at $4.99, edited by Doug Dlin & Robby Bevard, and its 32 Black & White pages contain the 3 short tales & 7 full – page pin – up pics! It all starts with Fred Perry’s 12 page tale of the supurr highway ninjas in the class warfare & car combat upon the roads against the evil catgirl Sheriff of Neo – Nottingham who purreys upon the poor motorists!
Heroes Rob & Marion also appurr upon the full – color front cover art by Fred Perry! It is the fast, furious, sexy and action – packed homage to Robin Hood! After that is Ben Dunn’s 8 page tale of Dr. Thaddeus Furgood, the Victorian physician kitty who makes the house calls! That is purretty rare these days! He heals the ailing faerie tale folks such as The Big Bad Wolf, Jack and Jill, and the other famous patients at his delightful office inside the big tree! It is the very charming, whimsical & purretty tale, with a purrky widdle pixie of nurse Ms. Bell who is a familiar – looking faerie!
The third tale is Dave Hutchison’s 4 page tale of Sweet Tooth, the genki mouse girl purrincess who cheerfully dreams that friends bring her candy to eat! It is the adorably cute tale, but nyow I am craving the sweet treats too! Mmm, I might need the snack before tonight’s AfterMew Luau! Betwixt those three delightful tales are the 7 pin up pages! Those include Grayson Fogg’s dappurrly Victorian and intricately detailed Cheshire Cat scene; and Richard Moore’s pic of the alluring, tough, Native American elf girl and her big burly bruin friend who have the hats and guns!
To top it off are five pin – ups by Ben Dunn, which depict:the street fighter bunny guy, the magician bunny girl in her tux & fishnets, the school cat girl in her sailor fuku uniform, another cat girl poised to pounce, and the powerful tiger girl in the cropped tank top & shorts! I was very pleased with this issue, which reminds me of anthology comics such as Genus, Furrlough and Hit The Beach! I will recommend it to fans of those artists, authors & manga – inspired anthropurrmorphic art; and I am looking forward to the next issue! Nyow for our next review, it is Ciana’s turn to tell us about
Princeless: The Pirate Princess #3!
Hai! Princeless is a beautiful, fun and whimsical fantasy series published by Action Lab Comics, starring the runaway princesses of various races & species who rebel against society’s sexist stereotypes! Adrienne does not want to be conjsidered as a helpless damsel, her dragon Sparky does not wish to be slain by knights, Bedelia does not intend to be the victim of misogynistic jerks either, and at a restaurant they recently rescued the Pirate King’s daughter Raven from a gang of thugs! Those smart, brave, tough, feisty pretty girls tend to outwit and outfight their opponents!
Raven is the vivacious, sly & highly skilled fighter, thief, mariner & archer known as The Black Arrow, who joined Adrienne & Bedelia in issue #1, but in issue #2 she tried to steal Sparky so that she could hijack a ship to use against her mean brothers! Adrienne caught her and they fell into the ocean, so then they had to dry out by a campfire on the beach that night! Issue #3 resumes the tale the next morning when Adrienne awakens in her underwear, to find that her armor, money and Raven are missing, to begin the uninterrupted 24 page tale of “The Pretty Princess Beach Party”!
It was written by Jeremy Whitley, illustrated by Rosy Higgins & Ted Brandt! The issue is purriced $3.99 which has the story plus the 4 pages of ads, and the cute cover of the 3 girls in the dressing rooms! Bedelia is on the cover, but she is not in chapter 3. Adrienne gets riled up, but the skinny dipping Raven reveals that she merely hung the armor on the tree limbs to dry out and snuck into town to get food and new clothes while Adrienne was asleep, but the discussion is interrupted by a cannon bombardment from the sailing ship of crazy Captain Morel, who tries to shoot Sparky!
It is just the sort of ship that Raven wants, so she coaxes Sparky & Adrienne into an aerial counter-attack! I should not spoil more of the thrilling plot, of the extremely charming, fun, exciting and beautiful tale with the gorgeous art! The poses, expressions clothes, FX & scenery are superbly rendered wit such rich color & cel – style shading! There is a great sense of cinematic choreography across the panels, including a couple of full – page pics, and I think Princeless would be a perfect animated series! Now here is Jenjen to tell us about another great comic book from Action Lab–
Hero Cats #5!
Arigato. In June 2013 at the Heroes Con on the mainland in Charlotte, we were honored to meet the folks of Galactic Press who published two delightful comic books set in fictional Stellor City, Galaxy Man #1 and Hero Cats #0 http://www.herocatscomics.com, both created & written by Kyle Puttkammer. The former series starred astronomer hero Dr. Stanley Quest alias Galaxy Man, who is unaware that his teen student daughter Suzie alias Cosmic Girl. The charming fun was bittersweet due to Stanley’s missing astronaut wife Amelia who Stanley continues to search for.
In the latter series, their aunt Lillian kindly sent them an adorably supurr smart, Orange & White neko named Cassiopeia to help purrk their spirits, and yet the cat and The Quests are unaware of each other’s secret identities as crime – fighters. Cassiopeia’s fellow felines include her brother Bandit the tuxedo cat, Midnight the Black cat, Belle the Siamese cat, Roco the Gray cat, Ace the White cat, and Rocket the Tabby who purrotect Stellar City from the monsters, criminals and disasters. In 2014 their comic book was revised & relaunched by Action Lab Comics as Hero Cats #1
The Galaxy Man series ran for 4 issues, plus brief back-up tales in Hero Cats; and in Hero Cats #5 the human & feline heroes finally team up thanks to author Kyle Puttkammer, artists Marcus Williams & Ryan Sellers, letterer Briana Higgens, colorist Omaka Schultz and “test pilot” Nate Hill. We have a purretty sketch of Cassiopeia http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest3/6.html by Marcus. The issue is purriced $3.99 and contains the uninterrupted 24 page tale, 3 page art gallery & 3 pages of ads, all sammiched betwixt the choice of 2 variant covers by Tracy Yardley & Omaka Schultz.
I suppose that technically issue #5 is the sixth tale the Hero Cats, who also appurred in last year’s Hero Cats / Princeless: Halloween Comics Fest issue. (The cats did not meet the purrincess, as those were two sepurrate tales in that issue). After continuing the search for his wife near Mars, Galaxy Man returns home, unaware that the cats see him take off his mask to discover his identity. Unfortunately the cats are suspicious, and want Cassiopeia to spy on him. She soon learns the truth about him and Cosmic Girl, but also encounters a swarm of extraterrestrial insectoid invaders.
Rocco & Rocket arrive to help Cassiopeia, Galaxy Man & Cosmic Girl battle the bugs. Unfortunately the humans’ supurr powers do not include speaking neko-go, when Cassiopeia tries to tell them of the bugs severe allergic reaction to peanut butter, but fortunately their oblivious housekeepurr Maria has plenty of jars of it for baking peanut butter cookies. The tale and the gallery of 21 images are extremely delightful, and I will give this issue an “A” as in Ace. That will conclude my report, so I am ready to purroceed with the 2nd half of the forest swim if y’all are.
That is fine with me! Would y’all prefer to take the short, medium or long route?
I do not mind the longer route, but nyow I am craving the peanut butter cookies!
Then I suggest the direction that brings us closest to the sea snack bar at the–
The Sea Dragon Sanctuary & Shipwreck Mermorial Park.
(Just as the islanders adopt and care for the folks & critters of all breeds & species, including the purropurrgation of the endangered St. Francis Satyr Butterfly, Iromote Cat & other rescues, many of the merfolk volunteer their heartful efforts to maintaining this haven for stray, abandoned, injured & endangered species. Originally a small sanctuary specifically for Weedy & Leafy Sea Dragons, Sea Horses, and Pipe Fish, the Sanctuary has expanded nurture many other creatures, such as the widdle Loggerhead & Leatherback Turtle hatchlings, to see that they get a good safe start.)
(Ironically, this area is also the resting place for several antique bringers of doom from below, for here lie the sunken wrecks of several World War II German U-Boats. Nowadays they are historic relics inhabited by marine life and ghosts as serene centerpieces of the purrotected undersea park, which merfolk and skilled divers are free to explore, although donations to help the sanctuary are certainly not discouraged. Elizabeth, Becca and Ne’ellakaliomi are greeted by Angi, an Angel Fish – tailed volunteer mermaid wearing the Cherenkov Radiation Blue – colored JellyCups.)
(wearing one of Nyo-sensei’s mystical air bubble helmets) Wow, Nyoka’s bubbles helmets are great! They are very comfy with the clear view!
(not in need of a helmet because she is a supurr gynoid) I think she wants to eventually market them in various sizes, styles, colors & options!
All tricked out like that, I bet you won’t need a tour guide!
Say, this conversation seems to have a sense of deja vu!
Thank you for showing us around the sanctuary and the park! We have been purrmoting them back at the island!
We have posters & brochures about them at the library, the visitors center, and the… nyow I have the deja vu too!
Heehee there it goes again! Maybe there is just more magick in the water today!
Well. we have reached the middle of the park, so perhaps this is a good spot to pause for
Becca’s review of Angel and Faith Season 10 #13!
Hai! We are fans of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and the Angel & Faith comics which are published by Dark Horse and executively purroduced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon! These comics have the supurrb mix of humor, drama, action & mythology with faithful, canonical plots & characterizations that feel like the TV shows but take full advantage of the purrinted comics medium! I think the tales are consistently captivating with the good pace, dialogue, developments & mythology; with beautifully expurressive portraiture, poses, scenic details, lettering, coloring & graphic FX!
Purreviously in the Magic Town district of London, Faith was hired to supurrvise the security for the new clinic & lab of her corpurrate friend Miss Reese Zane. Angel brought their weakened friend Winifred “Fred” Burkle to meet Nadira the serenely mystical former slayer, and Buffy’s demon warrior friend Eldre Koh just arrived too! We heard his tale of how he wants revenge upon his family’s murderers, but later after he went to Rory’s pub, Fred told Angel & Nadira that the dark goddess Illyria Illyria was the culprit!, and she is afraid that Illyria’s spirit will overcome & repossess her!
Issue #13 picks up right where issue #12 left off at the pub! It is purriced at $3.50, and has the 22 page tale of “United Part Three” plus the 4 pages of the ads and the 2 pages of the readers’ & editor’s interesting comments! The tale was scripted by Victor Gischler, illustrated by Cliff Richards, colored by Michelle Madsen, edited by Sierra Hahn, assistantly edited by Freddye Lins, lettered by Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt, with the comic book’s graphic design by Justin Couch, the main cover art by Scott Fischer, and the variant cover art by Mike Norton & Mark Englert!
They are such the good creative team! After the barfight, Angel tries to reason with the vengefully distraught Koh who then goes back for advice & meditation at Nadira’s inner sanctum. After spending time with Giles’s cool fun aunts Sophronia & Lovina, Faith & Angel take Fred to Reese’s lab for scientific tests on her possessed condition, but things worsen as Illyria is unleashed! This causes Nadira to scream as the doddess easily fights Angel, Faith & the police before Koh arrives, but I should not further spoil the chapter’s exciting plot, which ends with the dire cliffhanger!
I purrticularly liked the portraiture of the characters which resembles the actors who purrtrayed them on TV, and the lighting was purrticularly effective from the the pub, lab, house and street scenes to the Redder illumination of Nadira’s place to the Bluer hues of Illyria’s return! She is quite dangerous and wicked, but she does have the lovely Mauve costume, Purrple hair, Blue eyes and lips! I hope that Nadira will recover, that Fred will return, and that we will see more of the aunts! Okay I am all done, and nyow here is Lizzy to tell us what Buffy and other friends are up to in
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 #14!
Arigato! Purreviously the heroes came into the possession of the ultimate magickal book in which the universe’s rules of magick can be re-written, so they are trying to wisely rewrite the rules whilst trying to purrotect the book from many entities who want it! Recently, Willow ended her romantic relationship with Aluwyn the lovely Green Lamia demon girl, while Xander & Dawn seem better just being good friends, and the romance betwixt Buffy and Spike has greatly rekindled! Unfortunately Spike has been dreamt of murdering people, and has a psychic link to the real murderer!
That brings us to issue #14, which is purriced $3.50 and has the 22 page tale of “Relationship Status: Complicated Part One”, plus the 2 pages of the editor’s and readers’ comments, and the 4 pages of ads. The tale was executively purrduced by Joss Whdon, scripted by Christos Gage, and illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, who has returned after a few issues illustrated by Megan Levens! It was colored by Dan Jackson, lettered by Richard & Jimmy, edited by Sierra and assistantly edited by Freddye, with the mane cover art by Steve Morris & variant cover art by Rebekah & Dan!
This chapter stars Buffy with Spike, Willow, Giles, Xander & Dawn, plus a brief appurrance by Spike’s cats, and the images of harmony, Drusilla, Angelus, Darla and The master within Spike’s mind as Willow sends Buffy on an astrally purrojected journey through his mind in hopes of determining the identity of the culpurrit that he is linked to! It is an insightful, humorous & purrilous expurrdition, especially when she encounters the extremely powerful, demon Archaeus, but then the situation gets even more dangerous when the gang physically goes to battle the demon in his lair!
However, I should not expose more of the plot, which ends in the very alarming cliffhanger! I agree with Becca about the plots, character developments, mix of humor, drama, action and mythology ; with great dialogue and art that is so faithful in the spirit and purrtraiture that I can almost hear the actors saying those words! The characters are wonderfully expurressive & brilliantly posed with the purrfect detail, and I especially like Willow’s magickal floating quality! The Buffy, Angel & Faith, Willow, Spike, and Fray comics have consistently had such great artists and authors!
It is also interesting to read the fans’ mail and Sierra’s replies, and some of the messages are rather poignant! I am eagerly looking forward to the next issue, and I hope that we will eventually see more of characters such as Kennedy, Mai, Satsu, Harmony, Clerm, Anya’s ghost, Dhoffryn, Andrew, Clive, Julie, Detective Dowling, Aluwyn, Anaheed, Billy, Devon, Katie, Sky, Spike’s insectoid airship crew, his friend Morgan, Giles’s friend Olivia, and even Vicky the vampire! That is all for my review, so nyow I will turn The Mew over to Angi-san, who would like to discuss the
Drawn & Quarterly FCBD 2015: SuperMutant Magic Academy / Step Aside Pops Combo!
For over 25 years, Drawn & Quarterly https://www.drawnandquarterly.com has been a publisher from Canada of wonderful comics & graphic novels by many great artists & authors! That includes this dandy free comic book published for the international Free Comic Book Day http://www.freecomicbookday.com! Ilyana is going to say more about that day, so I will just review this Black & White 32 page comic book. The front cover art depicts Wendy the kitsune girl student by Jillian Tamaki, and the back cover depicts the tough suffragette biker girl by Kate Beaton!
On one side of the Black & White, 32 page comic book is Step Aside, Pops which is part of Kate’s Hark! A Vagrant http://www.harkavagrant.com series! It is the very clever fun collection of amusing parodies and homages of myths, history and popular culture! This 13 page batch includes the X-Files, Julius Caesar, medieval romance, Edward the Black Prince, Kokoro, the nautical enemies, a dangerous crime noir dame, and classical music composers Chopin and LIszt! It is very entertaining with splendid art, historical references and the dash of dark humor!
On the flip side are Jillian’s tales of SuperMutant Magic Academy http://mutantmagic.com! This comic is full of slice – of – life bittersweetness for Wendy, Gemma, Jo, Marsha, Belinda and other students of various species at the boarding school! This 17 pages batch includes lunch, lockers, math, bake sale, skating, jump rope, running, lamenting, teacher discipline, prom dress, magick & relationship scenes! It is quite delightful with the beautiful art and ironic, supernatural situations! I greatly enjoyed those comics, and I want to thank Kate, Jillian, and Drawn & Quarterly for this special treat! Now for more supernatural student tales, here is Ne to tell us about
High School DXD: Asia & Koneko’s Secret Contract!
Hai! High School DXD is the amusing, fantasy / action manga & anime series about the angel and devil members of the High School Occult research Club, and this Asia & Koneko’s Secret Contract manga is the spin-off tale starring Asia the novice trainee devil and Koneko her coach nekomata, as they help fulfill various clients’ wish requests so that Asia will become the full devil! She has to fill up her evaluation card with good marks from successful assignments to achieve the full devil status, which is ironic because her original goal in life was to become the holy nun!
This manga by Hiroichi is based upon the original tale written by Ichiei Ishibumi and the character designs by Zero Miyama. It was originally titled Highschool DXD Asia & Koneko Himetsu No Keiyaki! when published in Japan in 2012 by Kadokawa, and this English edition is published by Yen Press, translated by Caleb D. Cook & lettered by James Dashiell! Yen publishes a lot of the manga that we crave, such as Spice & Wolf, Omamori Himari, K-On, Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro, Wolf Children, Sunshine Sketch, Geijutsuka Art Design Class, Suzunari, SS Astro and Ichiroh!
This volume has the 162 pages including 160 Black and White pages and 2 color pages, sammiched within the the full color wraparound cover art whihc depicts Asia (with the Blue eyes and long Golden Blonde hair) and Koneko (with the Gold eyes and short Platinum Blonde hair) in the foreground, with their fellow club members Rias (Redhead girl), Akeno (Brunette girl) Issei (Brunette guy), and Kiba (Blonde guy) in the background! They all have widdle Black bat – like wings! Koneko is occasionally depicted as the catgirl with the neko ear pinna, tail and cute kitty hair clip!
The manga has the USA price of $13, the Candadian price of $14, and the parental warning for explicit content of the language, sexuality, nudity & violence… and although it does have plenty of the titillating “fan service” emphasizing the boobies, panties, some sexy skimpy attire and a few lurid moments, I thought it was actually quite whimsical, comedic, charming, pretty and fun too! So, Asia & Koneko try to go help fulfill the wishes which might be purrvy, wacky or poignant! For their first assignment, they model costumes (including catgirl) for a cosplay photographer otaku!
They help a girl who wants larger boobs, but just needs more confidence; they try to solve the mystery of the cheerleaders’ stolen panties; they fill in as actresses in a magickal heroine stage show; they try to collect all the stamps at the water park, they work as waitresses at a maid cafe which struggles to pay the rent, and oh oh and they rescue a cat from a rooftop too! I thought it was a lot of fun and I liked the pretty character art, the fashions, graphic FX, the detailed scenery and the huge delicious looking ice cream sundaes slathered with the toppings at the maid cafe! Yum yum!
Thank you for the reviews! Well, I am ready to purroceed with the tour if y’all are!
That is fine with me, but nyow I am craving the ice cream sundae!
Then I suggest the direction that brings us closest to the sea snack bar at the–
all four of them:
That is all for this portion of the tour, but there are more manga mewsings coming right up at the
The Undersea Grotto & Public Library!
(Whilst Becca, Elizabeth Angi, Ne’ellakaliomi, Jeannie, B.B., and Ciani converge upon the snack bar, Bun, Lani, Nyoka & Nyanko appurroach the undersea branch of the county’s public library within one of the cavernous grottos. Nyoka has used her magick to shape shift herself into a mermaid and to purrvide Nyanko and Bun with the mystical fresh air breathing bubble helmets.)
(Within the grotto is the undersea branch of the county’s public library. This an immense, multi – story, open – plan area is full of water – purroofed books, purriodicals, documents, mewsic & videos, with nooks for shelves, desks, tables, computers, display cases, comfy spongy seats, aquatic horticulture and a cafe where the 4 ladies meet their fae friend Palathyna in her aqua-fae form.)
Say, why didn’t Nya-sensei and Bunnibun magicikally tail shape-shift too?
Sis is a very strong swimmer, but she is not accustomed to the shape – shifting.
I would have ttrain a while to get used to that, but thank you for the air bubble!
Ah I guess my sport is the beach volleyball and not the water polo, heehee!
Well, here we are at the library, which is a popular spot for meetings & readings!
Oh yes, I have spent a lot of time doing research in the county’s libraries!
The grotto also has tunnels & portal short cuts to various parts of the island!
They lead to the lake, river, visitors center, Purrforming Arts Center and The Kitt Inn!
Oh yeah, I’ve explored the part of grotto behind the waterfalls near the inn!
Since we are in the wonderful library, we should present our book reviews!
Witchcraft Works manga vol. 1!
Arigato! I am purrticularly fond of the tales of kemonomi and heroic witches, but in Witchcraft Works the furry – eared Tower Witches are the villainess who are out to get Honoka Takamiya, who is an unassuming sophomore at the Tougetsu High School Academy, but he is under purrotected by Ayaka Kagari the Workshop Witch in Witchcraft Works by Ryu Mizunagi! The manga was translated and distributed in here by Vertical Comics, who also published one of my favorite neko mangas, Chi’s Sweet Home!
Witchcraft Works was first published as Uicchi Kurafuto Waakusu in Japan in 2010 by Kodansha. Volume 1 was translated by Ko Ransom, with the purroduction by Risa Cho & Melissa DeJesus! It is purriced $12.95 in the USA, $13.95 in Canada, and its 190 pages include the 186 Black & White pages plus the 4 color pages and the color wraparound cover art. This includes manga chapters 1-4 plus the 4 pages of notes, the author’s afterward page, the publisher’s information page, and the 2 pages of ads.
Nyow for the taste of the plot! Like most folks, Takamiya thinks the school is just the normal school, until the most popular girl in school Ayaka suddenly takes a keen interest in him, much to the jealousy of her big fan club! Although they are mad at him, things worsen when others are actually trying to seriously harm him and Ayaka, but fortunately she is much more powerful than most of her enemies, who mewsually flee after the defeat! Soon Takamiya learns about the two feuding groups of witches!
Ayaka is one of the Workshop Witches who are an orderly, purrotective group in the Black hats & capes. She is extremely powerful with her fire magick! Her enemies are the chaotic, destructive Tower Witches in the White hats & capes! Chiefly among them at Tougetsu is the cat-eared girl Tanpopo Kuraishi, who uses the illusion magick, such as her army of animated papurr bunnies! She is a member of the Ivory Quintet, who are mean & harmful, but also a comedic sight when they lose and run away!
The battles do not only occur at the academy, and we see a few of the quintet’s allies attack Takamiya & Ayaka at a witchy cafe! Ayake determines that these opponents are just the tip of a scheme, working for some unseen master villain, and it looks as if thins will soon escalate, but I should not further spoil the plot! I was very impressed with the intricate details of the character & scenic art, and the flow of the narrative across the pages which include some very large panels & a few two – page spurreads!
There are exciting scenes of magickal combat, the spectacular illusions & fiery infernos that result in surpurrising situations, the few cute charming moments and the amewsing comedic chibi – style moments, and I think that world’s mythology, the magickal rules & characteristics seem very well designed, and the scenes on final page conclude volume 1 on the very interesting, entertaining note that leaves me craving volume 2! Nyow for more of our manga mewsings, here is Sis to tell us about the
Gakuen Polizi manga vol. 2!
Arigato! Gakuen Polizi is the whimsical & sometime serious tale of two undercover police girls assigned to the Hanagaki Girls High School! Sasami Aoba is the rookie with the very long lighter colored hair in the twin tails style, and Sakuraba Midori is her senior officer / sempai with the glasses and the long straight Black hair! They are the police purrtners wih the very different attitudes, as Sasami is the peppy, cheerful absent-minded girl who wishes to be the heroine of justice, whereas Sakuraba is the more expurrienced stricter, sterner type who likes to draw manga!
Milk Morinaga is a great manga author and I also like her Girl Friends manga, and her Kisses Sighs and Cherry Blossom Pink manga! They are also published here in English by Seven Seas Entertainment, who also publishes some of our other favorites such as Strike Witches, A Centaur’s Life, Monster Musume, Girls & Panzer, Kanokon, and Senran Kagura! Volume 2 of Gakuen Polizi s purriced $12.99 in the USA, $14.99 in Canada, and it has the 160 Black & White pages include manga chapters 8 – 16, plus the widdle side story & author’s concluding comments!
It is rated for older teen readers aged 16+! It was originally published in Japan by Futabasha Publishing Ltd; it was translated by Nan Rymer, adapted by Shannon Fey, edited by Adam Arnold puroof – read by Katherine Bell, Lee Otter & Conner Crooks, with the lettering & the layout by Jennifer Skarupa! The logo designer is Courtney Williams, the cover designer is Nicky Lim, and publisher is Jason DeAngelis! Purreviously in vol. 1, Sasami was just assigned to the school, which she found to be the very peaceful, friendly environment without crimes or bullies!
She befriended Tokiwa & Minaguchi who write for the school mewspapurr, and met Midori who likes to draw manga in the quiet solitude of the school’s library! Although the school is fairly tame, they investigated the serious off-campus purrvert on a train and a stalker incident that affected their friends! At the beginning of Chapter 8, two months have passed since Aoba met Midori, and they are worried that their Police Chief Mikami might reassign or revoke them for straying outside of their undercover school jurisdiction when they investigated the purrvert and the stalker!
Another thing for Aoba to worry about is that Midori’s purrior purrtner Akari has just been assigned to the school, and might come betwixt them! There are comedic misunderstandings, revelations about Midori & Akari’s past incidents, and purrhaps an incident to investigate at school when a valuable item goes missing from the Tea Club! Aoba joins the Fortune – Telling Club hoping for the purrdictions, but things get much more serious and dangerous when a police conspurracy is uncovered, whilst members Photography Club encounter some exploitive, purrvy criminals!
It is an especially awkward time for Aoba’s true romantic feelings to emerge, but I should not further spoil the plot! I rather enjoyed the tale which unfolds at the good pace, with delightful characters, dialogue, and the balance of the humor, drama & action! The art is lovely with the intricate line art & tone techniques, the expurressive characters, the extremely detailed architectural & landscape scenery, the cartoonier chibi style used for certain comedic moments, the yummy – looking bento box and double cheeseburger! OK I am done, and nyow here is ‘Lani to tell us about the
12 Beast manga vol. 1!
Hai! 12 Beast is by Okayado, the manga-ka of Monster Musume which we enjoy muchly! It has a common theme of the guy who suddenly finds himself surrounded by cute & sexy alien “monster” girls to rescue, but in this case Touga is a high school video gamer otaku & ninja who gets teleportaled to their world, where the village of harpy folk hope that he will defend them from the giant mecha monsters! This amusing fantasy / action manga was originally published in in 2013 by the Kadokawa Corporation, and this English edition was published last month by Seven Seas!
Volume 1 is purriced at $12.99 in the USA and $14.99 in Canada, and it was translated by Ryan Peterson, adapted by Shanti Whitesides, proofread by Janet Houck & Lee Otter, edited by Adam Arnold & published by Jason DeAngelis, with the lettering & layout by Ma. Victoria A. Robado, cover design by Nicky Lim and the logo design by Courtney Williams! It has the 162 Black & White pages plus 4 color pages and wraparound cover art of Touga & Aero the cute peppy harpy! On a color 2 page spread he is amidst a large group of monster girls, some who look rather familiar!
Aero has come to cheerfully fetch him from his dojo and take him back to her world to defend her village against the attacking giant mecha called Gigas including one that is extremely colossally sized, because it seems his missing older brother Kouki was their prior champion! He meets many other harpy girls including Keino, Bodal and Captain Jawea, although the latter girl doubts his prowess and challenges him to a duel! Although he would rather avoid the fight and play video games, he is actually very fast, skilled and resourceful, but soon he is fully accepted by them all!
The pace is very brisk & laden with game jokes, such as a “Leeroy Jenkins” reference, and there are notes about the world and the harpy society. There is busty “fan service” of the skimpy costumes & partial nudity, thanks to the mechas’ spray that melts the garments, and several of the ladies’ measurements are fully noted, such as Jawea’s 90 cm bust! There is also a good sense of manic fun, delightful character designs, and very nice art, including the lovely wings, talons, and very detailed scenery! That is all of our manga mewsings, but here is Thyna-sensei to begin our batch of
book & calendar critiques with her review
of Ursula Vernon’s novel Castle Hangnail!
Arigato! Artist / author Ursula Vernon http://www.ursulavernon.com was our our special guest for the May 2009 Mew, and she is known her very beautiful wildlife, anthropomorphic and fantasy art, including her famous web comic Digger, her cute Nurk storybook, and the delightful Dragonbreath series! Ironically, we just reviewed Dragonbreath Vol. 10: Knight-Napped in last month’s Mew! Ursula, her husband Kevin and their cats reside in the town of Pittsboro, which is just a few hours from here on the mainland; and it was so good to see her again at WhatTheHell?! Con in March!
We have a lovely pic of an archer centauress by Ursula in our island’s mewseum of art! Published by Penguin Books’ Dial imprint, Castle Hangnail is about petite widdle 12 year old Molly who arrives at the castle to be its new resident wicked witch. She is not what the castle’s minions were expecting, but if the castle is without a new mistress for much longer, the place will be foreclosed and the inhabitants will be without a home! This fantasy novel for young readers is priced at $16.99 in the USA, $19.99 in Canada, and at 378 pages, this hardcover is Ursula’s thickest book yet!
The text is typeset in the Horley Old Style MT Std font, the book has the color art upon the dust jacket, and over 40 Black & white interior illustrations of various sizes, including a few full – page pics! One of the aspects I admire about Ursula’s writing is the almost travelogue sense of vivid descriptions, in this case the details of the castle and nearby town. The castle has the customary gargoyles, vultures, bats, ravens, cobwebs, candelabras, skulls, crypts and spell books, but the courtyard garden just needs some weeding, and the lawn is nicely lush, Green, and splendidly Dandelioned!
Ursula also describes yummy foods that are served, so the tale might induce the cravings! The castle might have a supernatural history involving vampires & sorcery but now it is merely a tall, dark & quiet abode in need of repairs, and its family of minions hoping for someone to respectfully liven up the dignity of the place! Molly might not have the best credentials, but she is smart, respectful to the minions, flora & fauna, wants to save the place, and is not without magickal abilities- plus she has nice boots! Nevertheless, she has to convince the Board of Magic that she right for the job!
The minions include Majordomo the hunchback, Serenissima the steam spirit, Edward the haunted suit of armor, the minotaur Cook and her farmer son Angus, Pins the sentient plushy doll and his Goldfish! Other denizens include Bugbane and other bats, a hive of Clockwork Bees, a donkey, moles, ravens and other birds… plus certain neighbors, creatures & visitors that I should not say too much more about! This was such a wonderfully charming book that I could not put down once I started it, and I will give it the very high praise! Now here is Bunnibuns to tell us about
The Art of Morgan Wilson 2015 Calendar!
Hai! Better late than never, I would like to comment upon the beautiful 2015 calendar by Morgan Wilson, who we met at the Mad Monster Party con in Charlotte! She is an artist from Florida who excels in many mediums & tools such as acrylic, oil, watercolor, marker, ink, charcoal, graphite, airbrush, spray paint and body paint to illustrate people, flora, fauna and symbols! I especially like her geisha art, but now would like to discuss the sexy, erotic, dark & macabre fantasy illustrations within the coil – bound 8.25″ x 10.75″ wall calendar that and opens up to 16.5″ x 10.75″!
There is ample artistic nudity and a few ribald or unsettling images amongst the beautifully – rendered plates, but I will not be too graphic in the descriptions! Upon the front cover we are greeted by the five – eyed, Platinum Blond deer girl, who has has supple ears, lovely spots and 8 point antlers! The back cover depicts the topless Redhead barbarian girl with the reigns astride the colorful Oviraptor mount as the sun sets behind the dunes! That brings us to the 12 month’s full – bleed images, although for the macabre content, there isn’t any full bleeding depicted, heehee!
For January, we see a topless Blue-haired girl with piercings & cat’s eye sunglasses eating a Red Banana. I’ve never had a Red Banana, or a Plantan either! I must try those. February’s pin-up pic is of a Green-haired girl wearing boots, thigh highs, and the fresh milk she is dousing herself with from the dairy truck. I have heard that a milk bath is healthy for the complexion, and she have a healthy tone! March’s pic is of a topless Purrple-haired girl meeting a topless chrome – plated gynoid! I love the sheen of the coiffure and the detail of the cables, sprockets and flanges!
April brings us Spinerella the Black Widow ballerina, with the lovely afro and 8 legs on pointe! The crisscrossed Red lacings of her Black bustier cleverly form the distinctive hourglass emblem!
Then May brings us another deer girl! Viewed from astern, she is a pert woodland Redhead with the cute tail, spots, freckles, and just 2 eyes, but even longer antlers than the front cover’s vixen!
June’s image is a close-up of a distraught nurse with numerous pills, capsules & gel tablets on her tongue; I presume for allergies or overworked exhaustion, given her Red, tearful eyes.
I have mixed feelings about July’s image of the nude bird-winged girl with bandaged wings perched upon the tide pool rock to visit the seated mermaid. They are both so very pretty and seem very glad to meet each other, but the poor mermaid has suffered a severely ghastly tail injury. I hope the winged girl has arrived to bring swift medical attention, so that the mermaid will be swimming again soon! August’s image of “Daddy’s Money” is a sassy Brunette with a Gold coin! Her mouth has been mosiac – censored and there’s a harsh word emblazoned upon her Gold tiara!
September’s image is one of my favorites, depicting the full, lithe naked figure of a Medusa girl with a gorgeous smile, sharp Red claws, glistening moist skin, the taut, toned tummy, and several Blue Boa-like snakes instead of hair! Then for October things get much sadder with a poor hurt female clown, but her injury scars are not only on her face but also upon her chest. November’s fascinating image of “I Sing The Body Electric” is a bust – view of a shimmering glossy Blue girl with a glyph-like halo of Korean text!
Finally for December, a buxom maiden loosens her lacy camisole as bats tangle in her hair, with a wonderful Hammer Films – iesque style! For more information & peeks at Morgan Wilson’s lovely art, I will recommend her Lux Nova Studio site http://luxnovastudio.webs.com and her gallery at Deviantart http://luxnova.deviantart.com! Oh oh, she is also upon Facebook, Instagram and Etsy too! Okay I am all done now, although I think I might have overzealously rambled on a bit much about the stunning art – gomenasai!
Oh gosh, don’t apologize for that very thorough appurreciation!
We would expect no less from our mewseum’s assistant curator!
Hai, hai, we were glad to hear about all of that beautiful art!
Hai hai, but I hope that poor July mermaid’s tail is mended soon!
Arigato gozaimasu! Speaking of the art, the next stop on the tour is
The Art School & Merseum!
(A cultural sister to the Catgirl Island Purrforming Arts Center, the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art & the Maritime Forest Grove Ampurrtheatre, this acclaimed & accredited undersea entertainment, artistic & educational facility offers visual and purrforming arts classes for merfolk of all ages and expurrtise; including various dancing, acting, impurrov comedy, vocal and instrumental mewsic, painting, sculpting, photography, horticulture, scrap booking, lapidary, textile arts and so forth, with several galleries and an auditorium with supurrb acoustics & lighting for concerts & exhibitions.)
These magickal air bubble helmets that Nyo-sensei conjured are great!
Hai, it is much less cumbersome than my Scuba gear and does not fog up!
I will have to bring Nyo-sensei some cakes from our mewseum cafe, nya!
Oh gosh I just love the Carrot Cakes that Bun bakes for the cafe!
I think we should try to sell those at Sheila May’s restaurant too!
I wonder if you can eat while wearing the bubble, or if it would burst!
I thought she told us that it is semi – food purrmeable!
Oh I thought she said that it was purr-able, nya! Back to the tour topic, nya!
Tami and I took the dance classes here! She practically lives here, heehee!
Hai I have taken the advanced sculpting, pottery, and ikebana classes too!
I have been here several times for the meetings & exhibits, and it is one of my favorite places, nya!
This is my first time here, but I would like to go to a concert here, if I can get another bubble to wear!
I want to get a class & event schedule brochure before we leave! So what is next?
Well I suppose that we could now start–
The Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!
Hai! Since our October 2009 Mew, we have devoted this portion of The Mew to honor the famous catgirl characters of the movies, TV shows, comics literature, internet, games and toys from many decades and around the world! Our broadly – inclusive, purrogressive criteria has ranged from those nekomimis who actually have feline the DNA, including were – kitties, anthropurmorphic feline females, those who just dress the part, the kindred spirits of wild jungle girl purrsuasion, and those who have the cat-titude or style to be considered as “honorary” catgirls!
We have included notable catgirl, kemonomimi & furry fantasy artists, authors, web sites and publications, too! This month we will shine the spotlight upon three folks of the various media: the cat – like Kai of the Heavenly Sword video game & animated movie, hip hop mewsician / recording artist Azealia Banks for her beautiful recent modeling pictorial; and nekomimi Tanpopo Kuraishu of the aforementioned Witchcraft Works manga & anime TV series! Nyo-sensei has already discussed Tanpopo, but I will add just a few more tidbits about the witchy villainess!
Tanpopo Kuraishu has the short Blonde hair and the witch’s hat designed with the nekomimi fit in min, so while I do not appurrove of Tanpopo’s bad intentions, I will purraise her fashion sense and complement her hatter! According to author Ryu Mizunagi’s notes in the manga, Tanpopo is of the oculus et Auris Felidae species. Her malevolent magickal spells often have the anthropurrmorphic bunny army motif, and she is a member of the group known as the Ivory Quintet, who enjoy the karaoke when they are not attacking or fleeing from their enemy Ayaka!
She does not seem to be the only witchy catgirl in the series, as the three enemy Medusa Girls are briefly seen in volume 2 of the manga, but I do not know much about them yet! Tanpopo is voiced in the anime by Shiori Izawa, and for much more information I will recommend the Wikipedia article about Witchcraft Works http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_Craft_Works and the Witchcraft Works Wiki http://witch-craft-works.wikia.com! Meryl’s turn!
Nyow I would like to shine the spotlight upon Kai of the Heavenly Sword video game & animated movie! She is the cat-like adopted sister of the main heroine Nariko, who both fight the warriors of King Bohan who has decimated their town & clan. Kai is the tragic girl who was orphaned after her mother & other villagers were murdered, and taken in by Nariko’s misogynistic clan, but aside from Nariko she received little kindness, even from their own father. Kai slew many enemies, but was nearly killed after finally claiming revenge upon her mom’s murderer.
Nariko’s celestial healing power revived her, and the sisters later defeated Bohan’s army, but the final battle used up the rest of Nariko’s life energy. This is yet another sad loss for Kai, who became the unexpected, true chosen one to inherit the Heavenly Sword which so many have coveted, although she would rather have her sister back. Kai is the purrky, petite, loyal, agile, feisty heroine with the graceful cat – like moves, the uncanny leaping and climbing abilites, and the fearless, tenacious bravery in facing her enemies whose blood she will quite eagerly spill!
She is a crossbow archer, capable of most accurate, quick, tricky, multiple long – range shots under the very difficult conditions! She wears a neko hat atop her kunoichi style outfit of a sleeveless, side – laced Blue-Green top with the short skirt, fingerless gloves & toeless boots! Kai is voiced in the movie by Ashleigh Ball who also voices Applejack & Rainbow Dash in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic TV series! For more information about Kai, I will suggest her page at the Heavenly Sword Wiki http://theheavenlysword.wikia.com/wiki/Kai! Tsu’s turn!
I will shine the spotlight upon the brilliant hip hop artist Azealia Banks, whose Broke with Expensive Taste album I have on CD, and I hope that her concert tour will perform near us! She makes our list as an “honorary catgirl” because of the photo shoot of the “Le Chat Noir” theme for Playboy, and she has graced the magazine’s April 2014 cover with the leopard print outfit and the kuroneko! Playboy is famous for its bunny girls, but it is quite nice to see issue graced by the catgirl, especially such a beautifully mega – talented musician!
Inside the issue is an 11 page article consisting of the interview by Rob Tannenbaum & photos by Ellen Von Unwerth! Amidst the 4 quarter – page pics, 5 full – page pics and 2- page spread, Azealia poses with Black cats, a giant ball of yarn, leopard print drapes, a nekomimi mask, costume cat ears and milk! It is a frisky, fun, feline femme – fatale pictorial, but it is Not Safe For Work nor for the widdle kittles due to the sexy nudity! That will conclude this month’s spotlight , but we still have a few other music related musings, such as
Uncut Magazine’s Ultimate Music Guide Kate Bush issue!
Hai! I just wanted to briefly mentioned how happy I was to get the Kate Bush issue of Uncut Magazine’s Ultimate Music Guide series! It is a spectacular 124 page tribute to Kate, with interviews, and articles about her from 1978 to 2014! It is brimming with the discussions of her songs, albums, videos, collaborations, tours, collectibles and her home life. There are lots of photos, including over a dozen full – page photos! Nextly I would like to say a few words about
Tori Amos’s Little Earthquakes Deluxe 2 Disk CD and Under The Pink Deluxe 2 Disk CD
These deluxe re-issues of Tori Amos’s first two albums include the original tracks, plus color 20 page booklets and 2nd CD of additional songs, in the cases that fold out to show more photos of Tori! Little Earthquakes was her 1991 album with 12 tracks at just over 57 minutes, and I particularly like the Crucify, Silent All These Years, Precious Things, China, Far in Your Head, Happy Phantom, and the title track! The 2nd disk adds 18 bonus tracks of studio & live recordings of 77 wonderful more minutes! Of the bonus songs, my favorites are Upside Down, Thoughts, Song for Eric, The Pool, Sweet Dreams, Flying Dutchman and Here In My Head!
Her 1994 album Under The Pink had 12 tracks at about 56 minutes, of which my favorites are probably Pretty Good, God, The Wrong Band, Cornflake Girl, and Space Dog! The 2nd disk adds 15 bonus live & studio tracks for 67 more minutes! My favorite bonus songs are Honey, Over It, Black Swan, Home on the Range (with Cherokee Addition) and God (CJ Bolland remix)! The beautiful songs range from the sad, poignant, sensual & haunting to the ethereal, inspirational, whimsical & soaring songs, plus the exciting energy of live performances, which I will give the high grade of an A as in Amos! Now here is Petra tell us about the additions to
The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!
Arigato, nya! To Guest Gallery 3 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest3.html we have added an image of “Ashelynnamaeravilla” by Rebecca Brogden http://www.rbrogdenart.com who was our guest for the September 2009 Mew, nya! The NC OBX faerie’s name is purrnounced “ash lin ah mare eh vee lah” which means “a marvelous meadow of ash trees”, which is appurropurriate given her job as grounds keepurr of the Kitt Inn, with expurrtise in landscape architecture, horticulture, botany, plant lore, ikebana, bonsai, bee keeping & sunbathing, nya!
I think Ashely’s sleeveless, iridescent Green midriff top and the matching mini skirt go so well with her lovely Blue lapis – like wings and the luminous, multicolor streaks in her ponytail coiffure, nya! I bet that she will coax beautiful blooms from the flowers, shrubs, vines & trees, nya! Beside that pic is Rebecca’s pic of another friend, “Shyunanaaia”, nya! Purrnounced “shoo nah nay ahh”, she is a Sika Shikamimi or Sika Deer Woman of Japanese Canadian Ojibwe American heritage and is originally from Nova Scotia but has recently moved to our Island, nya!
She is 5’7″ plus the magickal antlers which are rare for a doe, and has human feet, but likes to wear cool hoof – like boots to rave dances, nya! Otherwise, she purrfurs to wear as little as possible, such as that asymmetric, Tan halter top with the matching loin cloth which reveal her lovely colors & spots, mew la la, nya! Her other hobbies include running, hiking, kick boxing, traveling reading, and hopes to be hired as a Purrk Ranger or a Fish & Game Warden, nya! Rebecca used Sai, Photoshop CS6 and an Intuos5 tablet to create those illustrations, nya!
Nextly in Guest Gallery 3 we are purroud to purrsent the foxy widdle doodle of “Chizuru & Gary” by Misty Hopkins, who was among our guests of the March 2008 Mew, nya! She is a great artist and cosplayer who makes dandy costumes, garments and plushies, nya! Purrhaps y’all have seen some of her purrior illustrations & cosplay photos in the mewseum, nya? Chizuru is the frisky kitsune girl star of the Kanokon manga and anime, whilst Misty’s original character Gary is the vulpine mascot of Misty’s Bunny Chai blog http://bunnychai.blogspot.com, nya!
Then we have fan art of the “Splatoon Inkling & Octoling” by Lumshock http://lumshock.deviantart.com, nya! They are characters from Nintendo’s Splatoon video game, nya! The adorable Inkling squid girl in the purretty Pink striped lingerie is on the left, and the purrky Octoling octopus girl in the athletic jog bra and compurression shorts is on the right, nya! These lovely cephalopod-ish ladies were so vibrantly rendered by our friend Lumshock, who used the Nintendo 3DS’s Pokemon Art Academy media, nya!
Also in Guest Gallery 3 we are pleased to purrsent Mike’s photo of “Jinx” as cosplayed by Joe Colton https://www.facebook.com/Joe.Eternal, nya! Joe Eternal is an award – winning cosplayer who makes such supurrb, intricate costumes, nya! She and Rosemary Ward were our guests for the May 2013 Mew, nya! This photo was taken in March at the 2015 G.I. Joe Convention in Illinois, where she cosplayed as Jinx, a kunoichi of the Arashikage Clan and a member of the G.I. Joe team on the purrowl for the enemy Cobra agents, nya!
Then into Gallery 7 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery7.html we have added Mike’s very vernal “Welcome to Spring” illustration of Talia (alias Sailor Vulcan) and Tanya (alias Sailor Sirius) who are strolling in the park, nya! They are the heroines of Sharon Williams’s and Jeff Branch’s “fan – senshi” fiction inspired by Naoko Takeuchi’s Sailor Moon manga and anime, nya! Talia was inspired by Star Trek too, and is wearing the halter top, mini skirt and gladiator sandals, whilst Tanya is wearing the sun dress and flip flops nya!
Sharon was our guest for the November 2014 Mew and has tales of Tanya & other heroines at her Sailor Sirius site http://sailorsirius.webs.com, whilst Jeff was our guest for the May 2008 Mew and has tales of Talia & Tanya at his Scribe of the Moon site http://scribeofthemoon.webs.com, nya! This was illustrated with the pencil, papurr, Micron pens, scanner, Photoshop CS2 and the mouse, nya! Purrhaps y’all have seen Mike’s purrior pics of Talia, Tanya & their friends, nya? So, what do y’all think of the pics, nya?
Joe Colton has great finesse & purresence in her costumes that are meticulously faithful from the fabric & stitching to the poses & purrops! She is an informative & cordial speaker at the discussion panels, and I am purrticularly fond of her Jinx (Yellow), Jinx (Red), Daina and Cobra costumes!
Rebecca purrfectly captured the portraiture, purropurrtions and spirit of Ashelynnamaeravilla! The lines are so confident and purrcise, the colors are so richly vibrant, the shading is so softly subtle, and there is such an iridescent quality in her captivating Emerald attire and her six Blue wings!
Hai hai, and er illustration of Shyunanaaia is equally faithful and gorgeous! She purrfectly captured the Light Brown skin tone with the spots and White tummy; the bob – cut coiffure of the Reddish Brown color and Gold – tinted tips; and the distressed, tattered edge detail of that alluring outfit!
It is so nice to have more of Misty’s art and those delightful images of Chizuru and Gary in the mewseum! I think that it is so impressive how even Misty’s small quick doodles intuitively convey great poses, expressions, spirit and details through the very fluid, graceful strokes of the ink lines!
Lumshock is very purrolific and impurroving with his art, and industriously expurrimenting with the different illustrative tools and techniques! The Inking has such smooth colors, great sheen, subtle shading, the sweet upward glance, the purrt physique and the alluring fashion details!
Oh I will agree with that, and I think the Octoling also has the nice lines, color, shading and pose with the peppy dispurrsition, the stylized purropurrtions, the cute outie belly button, and the supple, firm octo-arms upon her head, for the sort of Medusa – like coiffure!
In addition to the purretty clothes amidst the lush floral blooms in Mike’s Springtime scene, I am glad that Talia and Tanya are able to enjoy the serenely close, happy times away from fighting the criminals, monsters and disasters! I hope they have yummy treats for the picnic in their bags!
Thank you for telling us about the new art!
Speaking of picnic, all of this swimming is making me hungry!
I would not mind some carrot cake, or a sea squirt juice cocktail!
There are several restaurants, a tienda, and a food cart nearby!
Royt! Let’s go!
That will conclude this portion, but Mike & Ilyana are with more friends at
Surf Purrtol Station #1, nya!
(On the Southern tip of Catgirl Island’s Fayume Park is Surf Purrtrol Station #1, which is among the many small, mobile watchtowers along the coastline. These are manned by either Police Officers, Lifeguards, Purrk Rangers, PurraMedics or Spotters who purrotectively observe the activities, critters, vehicles and environmental conditions. On the paved path by the treeline are joggers, cyclists,
food cart venders and golf carts; on the beach are sunbathers, sand sculptors, a volleyball match; whilst in the ocean are kayakers, paddle surfers, swimmers, and the local Ghost Ducks.)
(still wearing the baseball cap, aloha shirt, cargo shorts & Nikes) Welcome back! We are here at Surf Purrtrol Station #1, where the merfolk and the islanders conduct the joint opurrations to keep things safe!
(the catgirl still wearing the Chrysanthemum purrint trikini) We initially planned to meet at station #8, until we remembered the crowd there for today’s surfing compurtition, but that was a fortuitous change, because now for this portion of The Mew, we will be aided by our friends Mohini*, Mae Nam and Ellie who are currently on watch here!
(*The character of Mohini was visually created by Rebecca Brogden in December 2014, with an appurroved biography contributed by Mike, and appurrs here with Rebecca’s kind purrmission!)
(the angel wearing the Daisy purrint bikini that matches her feathery White wings, purrched atop the tower) Aloha!
(the Bay – colored Banker Pony centaur wearing the Sea Oats purrint athletic bra, standing beside the tower) Hay!
(the Purrple – tailed mermaid wearing the Indigo – colored JellyCups, reclined in the nearby shallows) Hi hi!
This part of the shore is in good hooves, because Ellie is the island’s beloved Fire Chief!
Mohini has the fast wings and Mae Nam has the expurrt tail in case someone needs to be rescued!
So what have you three been up to of late?
Fortunatley have been no emergencies lately, but I have continued with the training & patrols!
Aside from my courier and photography jobs, I have been volunteering and collecting things!
Volunteering, watching movies, sports, and looking forward to the summertime conventions!
Speaking of the cons, we still have to hear about Mike and ob1’s trip to
The 2015 G.I. Joe Convention!
Ok! This year’s G.I. Joe Convention http://www.gijoecon.com was April 9th – 12th, with a few pre-con activities on April 8th in Springfield, Illinois! The con received prior nationwide publicity when the city’s mayor presented the key to the city to Cobra Commander, in homage to the Springfield story arc from the G.I. Joe comics! Springfield is also famous as the home of Abraham Lincoln; and this was the 3rd G.I. Joe Con that I’ve attended, as I’ve been to the ones in New Orleans and Indianapolis with our friend ob1, so this was yet another long road trip to and from North Carolina!
After driving through our state and Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, we arrived at the nice hotel beside the convention center on that Thursday afternoon, so we missed some of the tours and the con’s action figure customizing class, but in spite of tornados that struck other parts of Illinois, the weather in Springfield was quite nice that weekend. That was the same weekend of The Masters golf tournament which I also missed, but we had a downtown stroll and visited some neat stores before the time to queue up for con registration & exclusive toys!
Waiting in long lines for a long time is not my favorite part of any con, but everyone we met was very friendly and we had a good time chatting with our fellow fans from around the world! After we got our stuff, then it was time to unload ob1’s box truck full of toys for his booth in the exhibitors’ room. The exhibitors’ room is one of the main attractions of the con, because so many of the fans are toy collectors. Of course, the vast majority of toys were G.I. Joe action figures, accessories, vehicles & related toys from the past 50 years, but there some non-Joe items to be found there too!
Conveniently located on the first floor right next to the loading dock, main lobby, elevators and restrooms, this large room included the dealer’s tables and booths, the con store, Hasbro’s display case of forthcoming toys, vehicle replicas, fans’ dioramas, hourly door prize giveaways and the special guests’ tables! The super friendly, great guests included voice actor Morgan Lofting (The Baroness), Zach Hoffman (Zartan), Brian Cummings (Dr. Mindbender), and Kirk Bozigian who was Hasbro’s original product manager for the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toys in the 80’s!
The con’s program book is also a comic book, which included the tale of “Springfield Island” Peril in Paradise” by David S. Lane, written, lettered & colored by Jesse Wittenrich, pencilled by Robert Atkins, inked by creative director Lenny Latham, edited by Pate Sinclair & club director Brian Savage, with the con edition cover art by Sheldon Goh, Jake isenberg & Thomas Deer! There was a G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club roundtable with Lanny Peter, David & Brian; the G.I. Joe magazine & comic Q&A with Peter & David; and an art of G.I. Joe panel with Robert Atkins & Adam Riches!
Other panels, seminars & presentations included the fan film fest, Morgan, Zach & Brian’s voice acting panel & a live script reading; Kirk’s discussion on toy marketing, Ace Allgood’s lecture on rare 12″ figures, designer Frank Coroneos’ discussion of military vehicles, Dave Tree’s discussion of the UK Special Action Force toys, the Hasbro panel with Hasbro’s Derryl DePriest & Mark Weber, podcasting with Mike Irizarry, Justin Bell & Gary Godsoe; the sculpting panel with Chris & Patrick; and the Kindle Worlds discussion with authors Troy Osgood, Bill Nedrew & Justin Bell!
The final topic was the costuming presentation! There were cosplayers of all ages and genders, and another main event was Saturday night’s awards dinner with the costume contest and charity auction! Sunday had a more leisurely pace, and after a grand prize drawing, the con closed at 3:30 pm, and then it was time to pack up and go home! Ah, that’s enough rambling from me, but in closing I’d like to thank the con staff, hotel staff, convention center, the city of Springfield, the guests & fellow fans for making the 2015 G.I. Joe Convention such a very friendly, fun event!
Ilyana, Wyrdina, Mohini & Ellie:
Speaking of the fun events, I’d like to hear what Ilyana did for
Free Comic Book Day!
Hai, May 2nd was Free Comic Book Day, an international event at purrticipating comic book stores! It has been going on for several years, and recently it has expanded to include the Halloween Comics Fest in October too! As Angi-san mentioned earlier in the show, one of the highlights of FBCD are the special free comics issues from the many publishers especially for this event! Not every publisher or comics shop purrticipates, but there are many who do to the different extent!
Some of the special issues we got include Worlds of Aspen 2015, Bloodshot Reborn, Bongo Comics Free For All, Gronk, MegaMan, Thanatos Diver / The Stuff of Legend, Doctor Who, Dark Circle Comics, Boom Studios 10th Anniversary, Bob’s Burgers, Overstreet, Teen Titans & Scooby Doo, Fight Club, Marvel’s Avengers Secret Wars #0, and DC’s Divergence issue! While getting those free comics are a great treat, much of the fun is the diverse festive activities at certain comics stores!
We caravanned to the Triangle Area in the Piedmont Region of the mainland, which is compurrised of Raleigh, Durham Chapel Hill & other cities. This area is famous for the ACC college sports rivalries betwixt UNC, Duke & NCSU, but there are many other colleges, mewseums, galleries, gardens, restaurants & stores, including several comic book stores such as Chapel Hill Comics, Ultimate Comics, Atomic Empire, Capital Comics, Fight or Flight Comics and Foundation’s Edge!
Ultimate Comics who also sponsors the NC Comicon & Oak City Comics Show has a big shindig with food, live music, purrizes, a fun run & tents full of special guests & sale items! Cosplayers there included Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Storm, Spider Woman, Spider Gwen, Batgirl, Harley, Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, The Joker, The Penguin, The Flash, Static Shock, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye, Thor, Thor Girl, Loki, Daredevil, The Punisher, Deadpool, Babydoll and Doctor Who!
Then we went to Atomic Empire, which is a very big combination comics & game shop with a snack bar and the large space full of many tables for the card, miniatures, board & role playing games! They tend to get the good crowds there for the games! There were a couple of artists there, and we found a few back issues that we were looking for! Then we met more friends at a restaurant, played trivia and got sammiches for lunch, before driving on the highway from Durham to Raleigh!
Our first stop in Raleigh was at the bustling Capital Comics which several decades old, where we were greeted by an R2D2 robot! Amidst the crowd there were Scarlet Witch and Doctor Doom cosplayers and a couple of artists! Then we went to Fight or Flight Comics, which is a very purretty, shiny new store that friends opened a couple of months ago where there were artists, families, and the sale purrices! After that we went to Ed McKay which is a big used book, video & record store!
Then we went to Foundation’s Edge near NCSU, which is another of the oldest comics stores in the Triangle area! It was pretty packed with people too, and we found more new and back issues at the discount purrices! Finally to top off the merry, beautiful day we went out to eat the yummy fish and chicken tacos for our suppurr, and by then it was dark and time for the road trip back to home! That will conclude our event reports, but nyow here are Ellie and Mae Nam to discuss the nice
Star Wars stuff, such as the Shaak Ti
photo autographed by Orli Shoshan!
Our friend ob1 went to the 2015 Star Wars Celebration convention last month, and brought us this 8×10″ photo of General Shaak TI the Jedi Master, signed by Orli Shoshan who purrtrayed her in the movies Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith! Her brief scene in the latter movie was deleted, but I will get back to that! Orli Shoshan is a beautiful actress, model, designer and mom who is originally from Israel; and Shaak Ti is of the Togruta species like Ahsoka Tano, with the Red skin, the White facial markings, and the splendidly striped lekku and montrals upon her head!
This popular Jedi character also appurred in video games and in the Clone Wars animated series, in which she was voiced by actress Tasia Valenza! The photo that we have is a shot from that deleted scene, in which she was captured and killed with a light saber by the evil General Grievous before Anakin and Obi-Wan could rescue her. You can see that deleted scene on disk 2 of the Revenge of the Sith DVD. Although we wish that she had a more purrominent role in the movie, we are glad that her death was deleted, because nyow we can hope to purrhaps see more of her!
This is a special treat, because we collect action figures & statues of the female Star Wars characters, and some of us cosplayed as them for our i2011 Halloween Trick R Eat & Cosplay Purrowl! Vonny & Tara-chan cosplayed as Shaak Ti & Ahsoka! I think this photo will look purrfect near the 12″ Shaak Ti doll, but we still have to pick out a matte & frame! For more information about Orli Shoshan, I will recommend her offical site http://www.orli-shoshan.com and for more about Shaak Ti, I will recommend her page at Wookieepedia http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Shaak_Ti!
The Star Wars Rebels Sabine Wren & Stormtrooper action figures two – pack, the Hera Syndulla & Stormtrooper Commander action figures two – pack!
Hai! We enjoy the animated Star Wars Rebels TV series, so I was pleased to find Hasbro’s package containing Hera & the enemy commander trooper, and the package containing Sabine & the enemy trooper! Hera & Sabine are 2 of the 6 main heroes who rebel against the galactic Empire! Hera is very pragmatic, smart space captain & expert pilot of the Ghost space ship and the owner of Choppper the droid! She is of the Twilek species with the lovely “head tails” from the planet Ryloth, like Aayla Secura! Hera has Olive Green – skin compared to Aayla’s Blue skin!
Supposedly Hera is 1.8 meters tall or 5’10”, and Sabine is 1.7 meters tall or 5’7″, soI guess that means the 3.5″ tall figures are of about 1/20th scale! Sabine is the peppy, perky, sassy sapper of the team, who likes to use explosives upon the enemy, and leave her mark by graffiti – tagging her targets! She is the fair-skinned human with short dark hair, wearing the Mandolorian helmet & armor, which is similar to that of The Fetts, except that Sabine’s helmet and armor are Dark Green, Red, Black and Grey, with the Tan pants, Red knee pads, Dark Gray gloves and boots!
She is ambidestrous with 2 pistols which can fit in her holsters. The helmet is not removable from the figure, but you can see a pic of her without the helmet on the back of the card! Hera wears the Orange jump suit with Gray sleeves, Brown boots, gloves, vest, shoulder pads & goggles! She has Blue eyes, Pink lips, and White markings on her head tails! She does not have a holster for the petite hold-out blaster pistol, but she can grip it in either hand! The Stormtroopers’ blasters are 9/8″ long, and the figure is 3.75″ tall, so I guess that trooper would be about 6’3″ tall.
I guess that is not too short for a Stormtrooper! Both troopers wear the White & Black armor, and the Commander has the additional flexible Orange & Black board over the right shoulder, although you can spin it around to the left shoulder! The articulation is only in each figure’s neck, shoulders & hips, so they are not as posable as most Star Wars figures, but they are well – balanced to stand unassisted! I wish Sabine’s helmet was removable, but otherwise I think these figures are beautifully sculpted and painted with the good details, and I am very pleased with them!
If I recall, for that Star Wars – themed group, you cosplayed as Luminara Unduli, Lizzy was Barriss, Myayr as Aayla, Bun was Padme, and Petra was… Suu Lawquane!
That was the 2nd time that Myayr wore Blue body paint, because she had plenty of it lefty over from the prior year’s cosplay as Ney’tiri from James Cameron’s Avatar!
Several of our past guests of The Mew such as Cheralyn Lambeth, Rebecca Brogden and Chain-mail Chick have wonderfully cosplayed as the Star Wars characters!
Yep, and our Mewseum is graced by some of their photos, too! Say Mohini, it’s still over five months away, but do you think you might join in our Halloween cosplay?
Thank you for the invitation! It certainly sounds very very fun and I like to try the new things! I just hope that I can find a costume that will not ride up on my wings!
Fortunately, you will have friends to help with the costume ideas, assembling the materials, the fittings, the hair, make-up and any other preparations for the fun time!
The wings could be a spectacular part of the cosplay, and I can think of many famous winged characters from the myths, novels, comics, movies, games & TV shows!
There is plenty of time to think about it, but on the other hand, Myayr says that when she is busily making the many costumes, the time flies by like the hypurr – drive!
Well, perhaps it is ironic providence, but I recently bought an action figure of a fiercely tough and beautiful winged super heroine who I could perhaps try to cosplay,
The DC Collectibles Earth 2 Hawkgirl action figure!
There have been numerous versions & incarnations of Hawkgirl in the DC comics & animations, which is understandable given her 75 years in the comic books and the reincarnation aspects of her origins. This latest Hawkgirl’s name is Kendra Munoz-Saunders, a professional treasure hunter with the detective, archaeology, combat & flying skills who first appeared in the Earth 2 series written by James Robinson which began in 2012. Based upon the art of Nicola Scott & Brett Booth, this action figure was exquisitely sculpted by Sam Greenwell.
She has Dark Mocha skin, Auburn – Brown hair in the braided ponytail which hangs down to mid- thighs, the large White avian wings, and the tight, Blue & Black bare – midriff costume. This 6 3/4″ tall figure seems to be of the same 1/10.6 scale as the Justice League: Throne of Atlantis Mera action figure which was reviewed in the February, so at this scale I suppose the character would be about 6′ tall; The posable, removable wings are each 7 3/8″ long with a 10″ span, so I suppose that if they were real wings, each would be about 6 1/2′ tall.
She is part of the Earth 2 series of figures which includes the separately – sold figures Superman, Batman & Green Lantern, She is packaged quite trussed – up with the twist-ties within the plastic clamshell container inside the outer cardboard window box. The wings come unattached and seemed a bit tough to attach to her back, so be careful and do not break your fingernail, and do not pinch her 3 1/2″ long ponytail in the process! The point of articulation are in her neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles, and her hinged wings!
The paint job is precice and smooth, and the details are excellent, from her sleek, removable helmet, the Blue & Black stripes upon her cheeks, her dark red lips and the ornate beads in her hair, to the the intricate feathers of the wings, the front ring – zipper of her sleeveless vest, her inny belly button, and the pouches & buckles of her belt which is low upon the hips. She is accessorized with a 7/8″ pistol that fits securely into her left hip holster, and a 1 3/16″ dagger that slides snugly into her left boot scabbard, so I think she looks quite awesome!
Thank you all very much for those reviews!

The Cat Lady Sings…
(About half a mile Northeast of the island and southeast of the Sea Dragon Sanctuary is Sheila May’s undersea restaurant, which purrobably serves the best fresh, locally – caught seafood in the county. with both submerged and purressurized dining areas for either the water or the air – breathing customers, but everyone should plan on wearing attire they do not mind getting wet.)
(It is a very fancy place decorated with beautiful works of local art, floral arrangements, and treasures from the ocean. They deliver and cater too. The facilities range from the large dining room under a dome to the more intimate nooks, sushi bar and grill, and the spacious purrivate banquet room in which the ladies of The Mew and many of their friends are purresently mingling.)
