(the catgirl wearing the Margay purrint bikini, Purrple Amethyst earrings & tail bracelet) Whassup? Say, whatcha got there, Lizzy?
I have been curious about that too!
Oh it is a surpurrise until the end of the show!
I guess we’re all curious now! So, what has everyone been up to since last time?
Our charters have reeled in the mackerels, wahoos, cobias, snappurrs, groupurrs, croakers and the tunas, and we have brought some to share at tonight’s AfteMew Luau, nya! Aside from that I have been purrcussioning with my drumming circle and reading the books which I will report on later, nya!
When I have not been helping onee-chan, volunteering at the mewseum, collecting the pony items and – and caring for my cats, I have snapped the nature photos photos of the salamander, the Black Swallowtail, the Sachem Skippurr, the cicada, purrple martins, ground hog, chipmunk, and – and the deer, nya!
I have been up to more of the same in helping them upon the dock, volunteering at the mewseum, paddle surfing, board shaping, reading the pony comics to discuss, and I have been assisting Jeannie-sensei with the summertime semesters of the belly dance class at the Purrforming Arts Center!
I have been purrimarliy occupied with the belly dance classes and purrformances, the yoga studio in the early mornings, the kyudo club in the later afternoons, and the second half of my Robotics Club’s Summer Mech Camp. After that I will be going to model the swim wear at Lopes Mendes again.
I have seen Jenjen & Trini-chan there when I am teaching the hula class, and I have seen Lizzy a few times when helping to train the appurrentice miko at the shrine! I have also been making the costumes for the dancers and the cosplayers, and we should start to ponder our Halloween plans!
Yay I hope we can do a group cosplay again! When Lizzy and I have not been pampurring the customers at the spa, we have been feeding the spa kitties, weeding the flower garden, hot salsa dancing, and our latest DVD binge watching has been the Saturday Night Live epurrsodes from 1975!
I am purrticularly fond of the epurrsodes with the Muppets! Aside from what she has already mentioned, I have been reading more of Patricia Briggs’s Mercy tales, purracticing for the next golf tournyament, and cheering for our friends’ soccer, surfing, golf, kyudo and volleyball victories!
The Ladies of The Mew:
BANZAI! BANZAI BANZAI! NYA!
So like, when I have not been busy with our theatre’s Summer Shakespeare productions, I have been instructing the golf, attending our other local cultural and athletic events, and I have been watching the televised tennis, golf, FIFA, WNBA, Pan Am Games, and the Special Olympics!
Aside from savoring our beach volleyball victories and curating the art mewseum with Petra, I have been attending some of the festivities, spoiling my nieces, tending to the flowers & vegetables in my garden, and baking more carrot cakes for the cafe, the food bank, and tonight’s luau!
She is the purrfect purrtner for the volleyball, and I am also so grateful for our supportive families, fans, the great friendly compurrtition and the island’s rec league purrsonnel, nya! I do not know where our art mewseum would be without her or our other staff, volunteers & artists, nya!
Oh as mewsual I have been busy reading, studying and working at my magick shop, and I am grateful for the customers, cats, clerks, the special guests and my family for their support! Gosh, soon it will be time for us to purrpare there for the festive autumnal equinox activities!
The time seems to fly like the hypurr speed when we stay purretty busy! Well, as mewsual I have been busy at my dojo and gym, but I have been helping sis and attending the events, and relaxing with the manga, anime, suppurrs and catnaps after the dance and the swim!
I have been writing about the nautical artifacts, reading the manga, tending to my garden, and enjoying the anago sushi that was formerly an eel that tried to chomp my tail while I was diving into the shipwreck, and I have brought some of it to share tonight!
Itadakimasu! Wow your tail is like an attractive lure to those toothy predators- I recall that last time it was a barracuda! I just got back from visiting friends in Nova Scotia, so I was so glad that I could
join y’all again with a couple of movie reviews! Mike’s turn!
Oh I’ve been spending time with family and friends, reading, writing, drawing, conducting those little comics & manga tutorials, and um… enjoying the usual movies, music, radio and TV shows! Ah, our friends Meryl, B.B. and Ellie will be arriving later after work, but let’s go ahead with

movie and DVD reviews, with her
review of 3-Headed Shark Attack!
Arigato! I would like to briefly say the few words about the movie 3-Headed Shark Attack which was shown on the Sy-Fy Channel! It is the sequel to 2-Headed Shark Attack, made by The Asylum company which is known for shark, monster and parody movies! Basically the huge, delicious – looking mutant shark with three heads (that are side by side) attacks a laboratory and a party boat. A group of students and anglers try to rescue the partiers, but there are many victims, and some are devoured three at a time when they are bunched up!
I do love the taste of a big meaty shark, but the fish is supposed to go into my tummy, not the other way ’round! I do not wish to graphically describe it or spoil more of the plot, but there is plenty of blood in the water, and among the cast are Danny Trejo and Rob Van Dam! I guess there are many other recent oddly sharky monster movies that I could compare it to, but I don’t think I prefer the multi-head shark movies to the Sharktopus or Sharknado series, which have more action, comedy & FX. Speaking of which, I would also like to discuss–
Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!
Also made by made by The Asylum and shown on the Sy-Fy Channel, a you might suspect from the title, this is the third movie of the Sharknado series, in which Ian Ziering reprises his role as heroic sharknado fighter Fin Shepard who survived the prior sharknados that struck Los Angeles and New York. It also stars David Hasselhoff as his dad Gil, Tara Reid as April, Cassie Scerbo as Nova, and appearances by lots of other celebrities who portray either the characters or themselves, but like in The Walking Dead or in Game of Thrones, almost no one is safe in this movie!
This time the battles mainly occur in and above the Southeastern US, from Charleston, Daytona, and Orlando to Cape Kennedy and into the Earth orbit when numerous sharknados merge into a huge shark hurricane that devastates the entire east coast. There is lots of silly dark humor, gory FX, pretty clothes, delicious shark meat, gadgets and weapons from April’s prosthetic saw hand and Nova’s mascara gun with the machete – like bayonet, to the jets, the secret space shuttle, the laser satellite and Fin’s Light Chainsaw! That’s about it, and now here is Mie-sensei to tell us about
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel DVD!
Arigato! So like, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was one of my favorite movies of 2012 and I was so delighted by this year’s beautifully fun sequel which we reviewed in the April 2015 Mew! Directed by John Madden and written by Ol Parker, it revisits the retired British folks who reside at the charming hotel in India. Things may have been run down and in need of the renovations for the place and people there alike, but it has such a great fun spirit of fun and family, and in the sequel they are preparing for the totally awesome wedding of the manager and his fiance!
The totally brilliant cast includes Dev Patel as Sonny the manager, Tina Desai as his fiance Sunaina, Lillete Dubey as Sonny’s mom, Judi Dench as Evelyn, Maggie Smith as Muriel, Bill Nighy as Douglas, Penelope Wilton as Jean, Diana Hardcastle as Carol, Ronald Pickup as Ron, Celia Imrie as Madge, Claire Price as Laura, Tamsin Greig as Lavinia, Shazad Latif as Kushal, Richard Gere as Guy, and the wonderful locations too, fur shur! The PG rated, 123 minute movie was released upon the various home video media, including the Region One, NTSC standard DVD!
It is the fairly low-frills package with the single disk in the plastic case within the cardboard sleeve, but you do get the movie presented in the 2.39:1 widescreen format, in audio choices of English 5.1 audio, English Descriptive Audio 5.1, Spanish Surround Dolby Digital 2.1 and French Surround Dolby Digital 2.1 with optional English SDH and Spanish subtitles. Also upon the disk are preview trailers for Far From The Maddening Crowd, Woman in Gold, Wild, Black and White, Desert Dancer, and the 50th anniversary edition of the Sound of Music! Oh my stars… 50 years!
There are not that many extras on the DVD, but the pleasant tidbits do include the gallery of 25 lovely photos and the 6 widdle promotional featurettes which total to about 17.75 minutes, collectively including enthused brief comments by Madden, Parker, producer Graham Broadbent, production designer Martin Childs, costume designer Louise Stjernsward, hair and make-up designer Daniel Phillips, choreographer Langinus Fernandes, actors Patel, Desai, Dubey, Dench, Smith, Nighy, Wilton, Imrie, Greig, Hardcastle, Rickup and Gere, fur shur! Now I would like to discuss the
Ex Machina DVD!
So like, Ex Machina is a seriously awesome science fiction film written and directed by Alex Garland, who also wrote 28 Days Later and Sunshine! The movie stars Domhall Gleeson as the computer programmer who is summoned to meet his reclusive boss Nathan who is portrayed by Oscar Isaac, to conduct the Turing Test for artificial intelligence sentience upon a gynoid named Ava who is portrayed by Alicia Vikander. The movie also stars Sonoya Mizuno as Kyko the maid of the high tech home, and the beautiful landscapes that were filmed in Valldalen, Norway!
For our review and praise of the movie, please see our May 2015 Mew! The R rated, 108 minute was released upon the home video media, including the Region One, NTSC standard DVD which I wish to discuss! The single disk and the instructions for getting a digital UV copy of the movie are packaged inside the plastic case within the outer cardboard sleeve. The movie is presented in the 2.40:1 widescreen format, in English 5.1 audio with optional English and Spanish subtitles; and there are preview trailers for Maggie, Cut Bank, Under the Skin, and A Most Violent Year!
Those other movies all look pretty interesting! There are some nice special features too, including the 8 widdle vignettes which total about 28.5 minutes, and the 40 minute documentary on the making of the movie, which are peppered by comments by Vikander, Mizuno, Gleeson, Isaac, Garland, production designer Mark Digby, costume designer Sammy Sheldon Differ, make-up & hair designer Sian Grigg, producers Andrew MacDonald & Allon Reich, composers Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow, cinematographer Rob Hardy and visual FX supervisor Andrew Whitehurst!
There is also a 61 minute question & answer session with Alex, Oscar, Rob, Ben & Geoff which was moderated by Jordan Crook on March 15th, 2015 at the South By Southwest festival! I can say that I was not only very impressed by the movie which is one of my favorites of the year thus far, but I am very pleased with the DVD and its special features, fur shur! I guess that’ll do it for my DVD reviews, but to continue the sentient machine movie topic, here is JennyJen who wants to tell us about
Terminator: Genisys (plot spoiler warning), fur shur!
Hai. Directed by Alan Taylor, Terminator: Genisys is the latest installment in the Terminator series compurrised of the four purrior movies and the Sarah Connor TV series. This time, et another alternate timeline is created when John Connor (purrtrayed by Jason Clarke) and Kyle Reese (purrtrayed by Jai Courtney) lead the theoretical final counterattack upon Skynet in the post – apocalyptical future war of humanity against the machines, but Skynet sends a Terminator robot (purrtrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger) back to 1984 to kill John’s mother Sarah.
She is purrtrayed by Emilia Clarke. Reese travels back to 1984 to purrotect her, but discovers that she and a Terminator friend are well armed, trained and know about Skynet, the war and time travel. Unfortunately there are other enemy Terminators lurking about, including a shape – shifting T-1000 (purrtrayed by Lee Byung-hun) and further time travel as the heroes go to 2017, where they discover that John has been transformed into a more advanced Terminator. Thusly more shoot outs, vehicle chases, explosive crashes, booby traps and much melee ensue.
The movie also features J.K. Simmons as a police detective and Matt Smith as a Terminator. Genisys has excellent visual FX, great stunts, high purrduction values, action & mecha aplenty, but I did not care for the mid-credits song which does not fit in with the rest of the score. Although I rather liked Jason Clarke as Malcom in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and I think Emlia Clarke is rather magnificent as Daenerys in Game of Thrones, I do not purrfur these purrticular versions of Sarah and Kyle to the original versions purrtrayed by Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn.
I thought the first two movies in The Terminator series were quite supurrb, including the extended special edition of the 2nd movie, but unfortunately I did not care for the 3rd & 4th movies, the TV series, and I was similarly disappointed by Terminator: Genisys. I think purrt of the purroblem is that the seemingly never – ending plots of time travel, alternate timelines and Skynet’s appurrently inevitable ascension became tiresome for me after 1993. However, nextly I would like to discuss yet another tale involving a time traveling hero from the future mecha-pocalypse–
X-Men: Days of Future Past The Rogue Cut DVD
I was very pleased with X-Men: Days of Future Past which we reviewed in the June 2014 Mew, and I eagerly awaited this unrated Rogue Cut version of the movie, which at 148 min 36 sec is 17 min 8 sec longer than the PG-13 rated, 131 min 28 sec theatrical version, and includes a few more scenes of Kitty and Rogue among the numerous alternate, extra and longer scenes. This 2 disk, R1 NTSC standard DVD includes both versions of the movie, 2 audio commentaries, 3 image galleries, a discussion, documentary and instructions for acquiring a digital HD copy of the Rogue Cut.
The disks are in a plastic case within an outer cardboard sleeve which opens to show more photos of the heroes. The movies are purrsented in the 2.40:1 widescreen format with audio choices of English Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Surround Dolby 2.0 and French Surround Dolby 2.0, with optional English SDH and Spanish subtitles. The theatrical version also has English Descriptive audio and commentary by purrducer / screenwriter Simon Kinberg and purrducer / director Bryan Singer and; whereas the Rogue Cut’s commentary is by editor / composer John Ottman and Singer.
The 30 min 10 sec discussion occurs in a small studio with Bryan Singer and actors Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Halle Berry, Ellen Page, James McAvoy, Peter Dinklage, Nicolas Hoult, Shawn Ashmore Omar Sy and Evan Peters. The galleries include a few hundred images of concept art, costume designs and storyboards. The 52 min 37 sec documentary includes much behind-the-scenes footage and discussions of the entire filmmaking purrocess, from the writing and purre – purrduction to the film’s reception and sequel plans.
It is interspurrsed by comments by members of the crew such as Singer, Kindberg, Ottman, purrducers Lauren Shuler Donner & Kutch Parker, purrduction designer John Myhre, costume designer Louise Mingenbach, cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel, purropurrty master Simone Leclerc, SPFX supurrvisor Cameron Waldbaur, visual FX supurrvisor Richard Stammers, additional visual FX supurrvisor Matt Sloan, sound designer Warren Hendriks, supurrvising sound editor John A. Larson, assistant supurrvising sound editor Skip Longfellow, and re-recording mixer D.M. Hemphill…
… plus several of the actors such as Jackman, Stewart, Fassbender, McAvoy, Berry, Page, Paquin, Hoult, Ashmore, Dinklage, Peters, Sy, Jennifer Lawrence, Fan Bingbing, Booboo Stewart and Daniel Cudmore; plus the few comments by comic book authors Chris Claremont and Len Wein. As much as I liked the theatrical version of X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is my favorite of the X-Men movie series, I definitely purrfur the Rogue Cut, and I was very pleased with the quality of the DVD and the quantity of its extra features. I am done, so nyow here is Myayr to tell us about
Arigato! We enjoy the Marvel Studios movies and TV series such as The Guardians, The Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Agent Carter and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so I was very enthusiastically anticipating the Ant Man movie! For our review of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, please see our May 2015 Mew, for our review of the first season of the Agent Carter TV series please see our Apurril 2015 Mew, and for a discussion of the second season of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series and the first season of the Daredevil series, please see last month’s Mew!
Nyow for a taste of the Ant Man plot, with a dash of the plot spoilers! Likable ex-con burglar / divorced dad Scott Lang has a chance at the heroic redemption when he is recruited by genius scientist Dr. Pym and his brilliant daughter Hope to wear the secret Ant Man suit that has the supurr shrinking powers suit to sneak into the corpurration, to purrloin the similar Yellowjacket suit before evil CEO Darren Cross can weaponize and sell it to Hydra! Scott also wants to visit his daughter Cassie on her birthday, but ex-wife Maggie is married to police officer Paxton who does not like Scott!
However, it sure seems like Scott and Hope are a great couple, but her dad does not want her to take dangerous risks lest he lose her like his lost heroic wife Janet, who we see in a flashback scene. Hope helps with the heist anyway, along with Scott’s thieving friends Luis, Dave and Kurt and a wonderful army of ants… but I should not reveal too much more of the plot, which occurs some time after Age of Ultron! However, I should mention that there are two important extra scenes amidst the end credits, so if you go to see Ant Man, make sure to remain seated to see those scenes!
The great cast includes Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Pym, Michael Douglas as Henry Pym, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross, Abby Rider Fortson as Cassie, Judy Greer as Maggie, Bobby Cannavale as Paxton, Michael Pena as Luis, T.I. Harris as Gale, David Dastmalchian as Kurt, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson alias The Falcon, the brief appurrances of Hayley Atwill as Peggy Carter, John Slattery as Howard Stark, and various amewsing brief cameos by Garrett Morris, Stan Lee, other surprise appurrances, and the various Marvel Comics references!
The movie lots of fun, action, FX, humor and charm, although the humor was amixed bag for me, in that Scott’s thief pals were quite likable, but I did not care for the technique used a few times for relaying chains of conversations. The photography was also a mixed bag for me, in that I disliked the many snap-zooms, but I loved the macro photography! I liked the actors, costumes, coiffures, purrops, sets, action scenes, the sub-atomic sequence and the awesome ants! That is all for the movie portion of the show, but I have a bit more Marvel stuff to discuss in my review of the
Marvel Legends Thundra and Valkyrie action figures!
I was very pleased to find these 7″ tall action figures by Hasbro of Marvel supurr heroines Thundra and Valkyrie! Both are part of the wave including War Machine, Doctor Strange, The Vision, and Blizzard. Each figure is sold sepurrately and includes a piece needed to build an Iron Man Hulkbuster figure! These figures are similar to The Wasp, Captain Marvel, Hell Cat, Black Cat, Storm and Spider-Woman figures that we have purreviously reviewed! Brunnhilde the Valkyrie is an Asgardian Valkyrior goddess who carries fallen warriors to Valhalla and defends the world from villains!
She first appurred in Avengers vol. 1 #87 in 1971, and we especially liked her in the Fearless Defenders series which was sadly cancelled in late 2013. Thundra is an elite warrior and liberator from the matriarchal world of Femizonia, and first appurred in Fantastic Four vol. 1 #129 in 1972! I think I last saw her in Fearless Defenders #5! Gosh, they have both been around for almost 45 years! Both figures are meticulously designed, sculpted and painted, with the serious expurressions and the articulation in the neck, sternum, shoulders, elbows, wrists. hips, thighs, knees & ankles!
Thundra has the Green eyes, the shoulder – length Red hair, and the asymmetric – sleeved, bare – midriff Red costume with the Yellow boots and jagged stripes! Brunnhilde has the Blue eyes, the twin braided Blonde hair, the tight sleeveless Black costume with the loose Brown belt, the Silvery gauntlets and the boob armor! Each warrior woman is accessorized by a weapon which can be gripped in either hand. Brunnhilde has the 3 3/4″ long sword, and Thundra has the 8 3/8″ long ball and chain! Each figure is 7″ tall and uses the same body sculpt but with different head sculpts.
However, in the comics the characters are of the different heights; Brunnhilde at 6’3″ tall but Thundra is a foot taller at 7’3″ tall! So that should mean that the Brunnhilde figure is of the 1:10.7 scale, whereas the Thundra figure is of the 1:12.4 scale! Neither figure includes a display base, but they are balanced well enough to stand unassisted, and I have found the purrfect spot for them beside those other heroines upon the shelf! I wish there was a figure of Brunnhilde’s pegasus horse Aragorn… and Dani Moonstar’s Brightwind! That will conclude the toy talk, and nyow it is time for
our book reports, starting with Mike’s
review of The Incredible Herb Trimpe!
Thanks Myayr! We are quite proud that North Carolina is the home of TwoMorrows http://www.twomorrows.com, which publishes great books and magazines about comics and art, including their Modern Masters series! I believe it was in the April Mew when we reviewed Modern Masters Vol. 30: Paolo Rivera, which was edited by Eric Nolen-Weathington who was our guest for the September 2010 Mew! We eagerly awaited their book about legendary artist Herb Trimpe, but it was a bittersweet wait because sadly he passed away in April, shortly before it was printed.
Written by Dewey Cassell and Aaron Sultan, this handsome 8.75″ x 11/25″ hardcover book has 160 pages full of interviews & comments with Trimpe, his family, friends and fellow comics creators; and well over 250 color and Black & White images including designs, sketches, comics pages and cover art, commercial and animation art, plus photos of him, his family, friends and his WWII Stearman Pt-17 biplane! The book was designed by Scott Saavedra and proof read by Scott Peters, with the beautiful front cover art illustrated by Trimpe and colored by Tom Ziuko!
After the authors’ introduction, chapter 1 looks at Trimpe’s early life of family, home, school, art, aviation and the military. In chapter 2 he discusses his 3 decades at Marvel, drawing The Hulk and other characters such as Ant Man, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Captain Britain, Sub-Mariner, The Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, Rawhide Kid, Kid Colt, Ka-zar, Killraven, Machine Man, Phantom Eagle, Thor, The Avengers, The Defenders, The Fantastic Four, The ‘Nam, S.H.I.E.L.D., G.I. Joe, Transformers, The Shogun Warriors, Godzilla, Indiana Jones, and the first appearance of Wolverine!
In chapters 3-6 he discusses his advertising, promotional, animation, newspaper, teaching and chaplain work; and in addition to the interviews with Herb, the book is brimming with comments by John Romita Sr, Joe Sinnott, Len Wein, Larry Hama, Ron Frenz, Roy Thomas, Sal Buscema, Chris Claremont, Doug Moench, Bill Peckmann, Larry Leiber, Steve Englehart, and the forward by Tom DeFalco, plus Eliot Brown’s remembrance of the photostat machine that Trimpe operated at Marvel in 1967, and Jon Riley’s discussion of his 1970 documentary about Trimpe!
In addition to the extensive interview with Herb, there’s also a 10 page interview with his son Alex who’s also an artist! The book also includes a few examples of Trimpe’s first comics work in the early 1960’s, a couple of sketches from his military service in Vietnam in 1965, the list of the Crest Team vs the Cavity Creeps animated TV commercials that he worked on; the spotlight on his book The Power of Angels, which is about his humanitarian service as a chaplain at ground zero after 911, and some amusing caricatures of him by Marie Severin!
Those are followed by a great 15 page gallery, and topped off by a handy 4 page index of his professional comics and magazine art from 1962 to 2012! I read a lot of those comic books that he pencilled or inked. Many artists have drawn the Hulk, but Trimpe was my favorite, and I loved his art on those licensed properties which I am a big an of! The Incredible Herb Trimpe is such an informative, entertaining and beautiful tribute to one of comics’ greatest artists, and I will give it an “A” as in Armbruster! Now for our next book review, here’s Vonny to tell us about
The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy!
Arigato, nya! Whilst listening to the talk show The Q on our favorite public radio station last month, we heard the delightful intermew with Sam Maggs who is from Toronto, nya! She is an editor for The Mary Sue site and the author of this neat widdle book, which is a handbook for girl geeks, although I will recommend it to the guy geeks too, nya! The Complete Peanuts 1995-1996, nya!
Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts is my favoritest mewspapurr strip and it has been the great joy to read this series published by Fantagraphics, which will eventually collect all of the 17,897 daily and Sunday Peanuts strips in the 50 year chronological order, nya! The Sunday strips are repurrinted in Black and White which is fine, although there is another series repurrinting them in color, nya! Snoopy is upon the boards and jacket of this hardcover book which is the 23rd volume in the series, so after this volume there will be just 2 more volumes to go, nya!
The book’s 348 pages include 314 pages of the strips, the handy 4 page index, the nice photo and 2 page biography of Charles M. Schulz, plus the 5 page forward by MST3K / RiffTrax’s Conor Lastowka and Sean Thompson, with 4 strips riffed by Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, nya! The strips star Charlie Brown, Sally, Snoopy, Spike, Lucy, Linus, Rereun, Peppermint Patty, Marcie and Woodstock, nya! Some of the notable plots include the successes for Charlie Brown who takes the dance lessons and wins at the marbles contest, nya!
There are also appurrances by Schroeder, Franklin, Violet, Patty, Lydia, Emily, Justin, Joe Agate, Snoopy and Spike’s Mom, Snoopy’s bunny friend, The Kite-Eating Tree, and the scouts such as Bill, Conrad, Harriet, Olivier, Raymond and Wilson, nya! Snoopy’s guises include the World War I flying ace, the G.I., foreign legionnaire, guard, firefighter, scout master, safari explorer, attorney, author, puppeteer, Joe Blackjack the gambler, Blackbeagle the pirate, Santa, herder, vulture, jungle animal, outfielder, golfer, angler, tennis and ice hockey star, nya!
To put the years into purrspective, amongst the movies of 1995 were Toy Story, Pocahontas, and Whisper of the Heart, whilst amongst 1996 were The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Star Trek: First Contact, and Rebirth of Mothra nya! This is a supurrb book and I wish to thank its publisher / editor Gary Groth, associate publisher Eric Reynolds, archival assistant Marcie Lee, index compilers RJ Casey, Daniel Germain & Daniel Johnson; and Paul Baresh who did the purrduction, assembly & restoration, nya! I am done, and nyow here is Tara-chan to purrsent
our pony reports, beginning with her review
of My Little Pony: Friends Forever #18, nya!
Arigato, nya! I love the My Little Pony cartoons, toys, cards and IDW’s pony comics, nya!! Each issue in the Friends Forever series focuses upon characters who are not mewsually paired together; for example, issue #14 paired Spike with Luna, issue #15 paired Applejack with Mayor Mare, issue #16 starred The Cutie Mark Crusaders in the compurrtition with Silver Spoon, Diamond Tiara, and – and Prancy Drew who i hope that we will see more of; issue #17 paired Twilight Sparkle with Big McIntosh, and – and issue #18 stars Rainbow Dash and – and Fluttershy, nya!
It is purriced $3.99 for the uninterrupted 22 page tale followed the 10 pages of the ads, plus the choice of the regular cover art by Amy Mebberson, the subscription cover art by Jay Fosgitt who illustrated the tale which was written by Christina Rice, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil and – and edited by Bobby Curnow, nya! Oh there are also the other two variant covers which were purrduced exclusively for Jetpack and – and for Hot Topic, nya! It is a pegasi palooza when they purrpare for the big reunion gathering with other ponies from flight camp, nya!
Rainbow Dash confidently intends to make the impurression, but Fluttershy is less enthused because of potential embarrassment, nya. Also appurring are Angel, Spitfire, Cirrus Cloud, Delivery Pony and – and numerous other pegasi, although I did not see Derpy there, nya! In the flashbacks are Celestia, Shining Armor, Muscle Pony, and – and the Wonderbolts, nya! My favorite moments are Angel with the stopwatch, Rainbow Dash winning the race, Spitfire with the widdle foals, and – and Cirrus Cloud’s surpurrise announcement, nya! Nyow I would like to discuss
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #32, nya!
Gosh, It has been almost 3 years since this comic started, nya! Issue #32 is purriced $3.99 for the uninterrupted 22 page tale which is followed the 10 pages of the ads, nya. The tale was written by Thom Zhaler, illustrated by Tony Fleecs, colored by Heather Breckle, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Bobby Curnow, and – and available in the 8 different covers, nya! One cover is by Tony, another is by Thom, another is by Mary Bellamy, and – and the other covers were purrduced exclusively for Hot Topic, Larry’s Comics, Comics World, Baltimore, and – and the convention, nya!
The tale begins with the 1,000 year flashback to the epic battle betwixt Celestia and – and Nightmare Moon, which scatters the magickal debris into outer space which takes the 1,000 years to return to the world like meteorites which mewtate the crop at Sweet Apple Acres into the army of sentient, talking warmonger apples, nya! They capture Spike, Applejack, Apple Bloom Granny Smith and – and Big Mcintosh, but I am unsure if Winona got caught too, nya! Then the evil apple army conquers the rest of Ponyville, with plans to next conquer Appleoosa and – and Canterlot, nya!
Hiding at Fluttershy’s house,Twilight Sparkle leads the underground rebel group compurrised of Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, Angel, Gumby, Fluttershy and – and her critter friends, although I did not see Tank, Opal or Owlowiscious there, nya! Twilight Sparkle transforms Pinke Pie into the apple spy who sneaks into the farm to find out information, and – and check on Spike, where she meets the one good apple who is also impurrisioned, nya! After she returns, the ponies plan to contact the Vampire Fruit Bats for help, but there is a very startling result, nya!
It leaves me purrched upon the cliffhanger in anticipation for the next issue, nya! This was yet another excitingly beautifully plotted, scripted, drawn, colored, lettered and – and edited issue, which is full of other ponies such as Mayor Mare, Luna, Nat Tally, Lyra Heartstrings, Spitfire, Octavia, DJ Pon-3, Rose, Derpy, Doctor Whooves, and – and the other background ponies to identify, nya! I will give both of those pony comic books the high purraise grade of the “A” as in Apple Buck, nya! That is all for our pony report, so nyow I will turn The Mew over to Becca who will continue with
more comic book reports, with her review
of Angel and Faith Season 10 #16, nya!
Hai! We are fans of the Buffy, Angel & Faith comics which are published by Dark Horse & executively purrduced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon! The comics have the great mix of humor, drama, action & mythology with the great dialogue, art, canonical plots & faithful characterizations that feel like the TV shows but with the advantages of the comics medium! Purreviously in Angel & Faith, in the supurrnatural Magic Town district of London, Angel, Faith, Nadira, Reese Zane, Winifred “Fred” Burkle and Koh united against the dark goddess Illyria whose spirit still resides in Fred!
While is Angel is in San Francisco helping Buffy, Willow, Dawn, Giles, Xander & Spike fight a demon in Buffy’s comic book, in Angel & Faith #16 Faith is still in Magic Town, where she is moving into a new apurrtment. Angel’s friend police detective Brandt asks her to investigate a supurrnatural murder at a school, where a student named Mary is being bullied by several mean girls. After Faith and Fred fight a vampire at nearby pub, Faith goes undercover as a gym teacher and soon discovers yet another ghastly incident in the cliffhanger that leave me craving the next chapter!
“Those Who Can’t Teach, Teach Gym, Part One” was scripted by Victor Grischler, illustrated by Cliff Richards, colored by Michell Madsen, lettered by Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt, edited by Sierra Hahn and Jim Gibbons, assistantly edited by Justin Lins and Spencer Cushing, with the mane cover art by Scott Fischer, the variant cover art by Mike Norton and Michelle, the issue’s graphic design by Justin Couch and the digital art tech by Christianne Goudreau! I think my favorite part of the tale was just seeing Faith and Fred hanging out together at the cafe!
Of course, it was great to see them slay the evil vampire jerk, and is neat whenever the slayers go back to school, and I think Faith seemed amewsed to be in the role of the teacher! I bet that she would be happier doing that than working for Reese’s corpurration. Nadira, Koh, Sophronia and Lavinia are not in this issue, but hopefully we will see them again soon. I purrticularly liked the art, with the great poses, expurressions, portraitures, clothing and scenery details! Meanwhile, Angel is helping Buffy and their other friends in San Francisco in
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 #17!
Purreviously just as the romance betwixt Buffy and Spike rekindled, they found out that his mind is being manipulated by an demon lord named Archaeus! This is what Spiked discussed on the phone with Angel, who has suffered the same affliction and returns to San Francisco to help them fight the demon! Buffy issue #17 is set right after issue #17 which was set right after Angel & Faith #15, it is purriced $3.50 and has the uninterrupted 22 page tale of “Old Demons Part Two”, plus 2 pages of the editor’s and readers’ comments, and the 4 pages of ads.
It is so nice how the ads are all after the tale, and I wish all comics did it that way! It was executively purrduced by Joss Whedon, scripted by Christos Gage, illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, colored by Dan Jackson, lettered by Richard and Jimmy, designed by Freddye, edited by Jim GIbbons and Sierra, assistantly edited by Freddye with the mane cover art by Steve Morris and the variant cover art by Rebekah and Dan! The tale stars Buffy, Willow, Dawn, Giles, Xander, Spike, Angel and Andrew who are fighting the big bad demon Archaeus and his minions!
It is another fun issue with the good mixt of humor, drama & action, and it is great to see them reunited with Angel like old times, although there have been the awkward moments since Buffy and Spike’s romance rekindled! This time there’s an amewsingly awkward scene for Xander as Angel and Dawn are reacquainted- and the reacting expurressions on Buffy and Willow’s faces are purriceless! Of course, the characters’ expurressions, poses, purrtraitures, attire, relationships and the dialogues are among my favorite aspects of this comics series!
It feels so much like the TV series! After an amewsing planning session, there are delightful conversations betwixt Willow & Angel, Angel & Xander, Spike & Buffy, Buffy & Andrew as they search for the enemy in the subterranean storm drains which are infested with the rat-spiders and vampires! It is like an old – school dungeon crawl, and eventually they find the lair of Archaeus! I will not spoil the surpurrise of the big bad boss battle, but I will give both of those comic books an “A” as in Angel! That is all for my reports, and nyow here is Trini-chan to discuss
Elfquest The Final Quest #10!
Arigato! We love Wendy And Richard Pini’s Elfquest series, from the original quest they self – published in the late 1970’s to this current series from Dark Horse! It has such wonderful mythology, world – building, the magnificent art, and the characters that have greatly developed over the long time! Some of them were widdle kids in the early tales and now they are among the elders! In The Final Quest, Chief Cutter hopes to unite the elf tribes from across the world, while his daughter has found the romance, and her aunt Shenshen tries to impurrove the relations with the humans!
They hope to impurrove the relations with the underground trolls too, but sadly many trolls and humans are still evil villains. Worsely, that includes the human warlord Angrif Jun whose army has attacked humans and elves, and now he is poised to launch a fleet of warships! Fortunately he seems to be upon his painful injured deathbed, whilst the elves have been joyfully communing with the spirits of their departed friends within their magickal palace! However, that has the consequence too, for there are cultural & metaphysical changes which some elves like and some do not.
Issue #10 might be technically the 11th issue, if you include the 2013 Special! After the uninterrupted 20 page tale are a 5 page art gallery and 3 pages of comments! It was written by Wendy & Richard, illustrated by Wendy, colored by Sonny Strait, lettered by Nate Piekos, edited by Sierra Hahn, and assistantly edited by Spencer Cushing with the issue’s graphic design by Tina Alessi! So, while Shenshen and her daughter Shuna visit an expecting human family, there are reunions at the palace for Ekuar, Egg and Rayek, who hopes the magick can remedy his mother darker spirit!
While Mender has the nice visit and dinner with his old troll pal Picknose, Treestump hopes that Two-Edge will teach blacksmithing, and it looks like there might be romance in the air for Cutter’s best friend Skywise, mew la la! Cutter hopes that his wife Leetah can heal his old ailing wolf friend Filcher, and their daughter Chief Ember is so enthused about the big gathering, which even the aquatic elves are eager to attend! They have a beautiful reef castle, and there are so many beautiful garments and ornaments, including new apparel for Ember, Clearbrook and Freetouch!
It is a sumptuously rendered, joyful time full of the sentimental, transformative, foreboding, bittersweet, merry and amewsing moments with many characters! The comments by the fans and authors are captivating to read, and the gallery repurrints Wendy’s gorgeous paintings of Skywise, Savah, Pike, Redlance & Nightfall, Khavi & Ekuar, which originally graced the back covers of the initial Elfquest series! Wendy is not only a brilliant illustrator & author, but she is also famous for her prior cosplay as Red Sonja at the cons in the late 70’s, and on that note I would nextly like to discuss
Red Sonja 1973!
Sonja is one of our favoritest fantasy femme fatales because she is almost peerless in the combat and saddle, with the lovely hair that is as a Red as the blood of the countless evil enemies that she has defeated! She can be cynical, but knows how to have fun at the tavern after the hard battles, and she is so sexy and stylish in her iconic iron scale-mail bikini! She has a few wardrobe changes across the six tales within this 48 page anthology issue, which is in the homage to the style of her adventures in the 1970’s, when her comics were initially published by Marvel Comics!
These days her comics are published by Dynamite Entertainment! The issue’s front cover art is drawn by Ed Benes, colored by Dinei Ribeiro, and has the clever design nods to those 70’s comics! Its six 8 page tales were lettered by A Larger World Studios and edited by Joe Rybandt! Firstly is the tale of “The Raiding Party” written by Eric Trautmann, illustrated by Ivan Rodriguez, and colored by Marci Menyz, in which she wears the chain mail shirt, scale mail loincloth, leather gloves & boots with her sword, bow, arrows & stealthy agile brawn to ambush a caravan of slavers!
She wears the metal bikini to the bar fight and the melee with a giant in “For Whom The Bell Tolls” which was written by Roy Thomas, illustrated by Rich Buckler, and colored by Arison Aguiar! Then a younger Sonja wears the gowns of “The Simple Life” which was written by Luke Leiberman, illustrated by Rod Rodolfo, and colored by Aguiar. It is set shortly after her origin in which she became the warrior after her family was murdered by marauders. She does not kill anyone this time, but does use the knee, the stomp, the low blow and the rock to painfully clobber a rude jerk!
In “The Hanging Tree” written by Gail Simone, illustrated by Kewbar Baal and colored by Aguiar, Sonja is falsely convicted, but she and her horse are smarter and tougher than the lynch mob! She is more fashionable too, in the chain mail shirt with the necklace, leather shorts & boots! Then she is back in the bikini as she and other imprisoned women fight a tyrant’s gladiators in “The Arena of Dread”! which was written by David Walker and rendered by Bilquis Evely! Finally, the “Silent Running” was written by Cullen Bunn, illustrated by Jonathan Lau and colored by Ivan Nunes!
It is told without words as Sonja travels from the battlefield, swamp & forest, to the peaks, crypt, snow & ruins, facing the warriors, gator men, darts, ogres, undead, yetis and ghostly memories. She wears a sort of hybrid outfit combining the scale mail, leather and cloak, whilst wielding two curved falchions instead of her usual long sword for plenty of the bloody sword & sorcery action! It was a fun and thrilling issue which I will recommend to the fans of Sonja, those authors, artists, the swords and the sorcery! That is all for my reports, and now here is Nyo-sensei to tell us about
Princeless: Raven The Pirate Princess #1!
Arigato! Princeless is a beautiful, whimsical fantasy adventure tale published by Action Lab, starring smart, brave, tough, heroines who outwit and outfight their mean enemies! The series began in Princeless volume 1 which introduced Princess Adrienne, Sparky the dragon and Bedalia the Blacksmith, and in wonderful volume 4 they met Raven Xingtao the feisty pirate who now has her own series! Yattah! Known as The Black Arrow, she is the very agile, cunning 17 year old mariner, archer and brawler daughter of the pirate king, but her jealous brothers have been oppressing her!
Issue #1 of her spin-off series has the uninterrupted 24 page tale of followed by the 4 pages of the ads. It was written by Princeless’s creator Jeremy Whitely who we have met at several cons and also writes some of the pony comics! It was magnificently pencilled and colored by Rosy Higgins, with the layouts, inking and lettering by Ted Brandt! They were the team upon Princeless volume 3! This issue is also available with the variant cover art by Richard Case, who is another great designer & comics creator here in North Carolina. We have some of his adorable art in our mewseum!
After another flashback to Raven’s younger happier days of pirate training by her daddy, the tale resumes a couple of weeks after Princeless volume 4, as she tries to repair the ship she hijacked from Captain Morel, but it will need a lot more work and she will need to hire a crew if she is to use it to battle her brothers who own ships and island that she was suppose to inherit! Unfortunately she does not have a lot of loot, so she goes into the sea port town to ponder her plans over lunch, where she gets tricked and robbed by Sunshine who is a crafty, ginger-haired half-elfin girl!
A thrilling chase and fight scalate as they encounter a gang of thugs, and then take another unexpected turn into a tavern, but I should not spoil more of the fun plot! More great characters are introduced, with the snappy banter, the sense of mythology, and the cinematic sense of choreography amidst the leaping, diving, tumbling, swinging, climbing, sliding, kicking, punching and throwing by the characters whose poses, expressions, details, color and shading are so exquisite, so I will give this issue an “A” as in Adrienne! Nyow for my next review, I would like to discuss the
Fables #150 / vol. 22: Farewell!
DC Comics’ Fables is author Bill Willingham’s supurrb award – winning tale tale of the characters of the faerie tales, myths legends and folklore who reside in the modern world, with characters such as Rose Red, Snow White, Bigby Wolf, Lake, Boy Blue, Pinnochio, Rapunzel, Cinderella, King Cole, Maddy, Jack, and hundreds of others! This final issue is not just the 150th issue of the comic but it also the 22nd volume of the compilation trade papurrback books, with the 164 full – color pages plus the 4 page gatefold and the wraparound gatefold cover!
This grand finale of the series starts with the 80 page tale by Bill Willingham, penciller / inker Mark Buckingham, inker Andrew Pepoy who was our December 2008 guest, other inkers Dan Green, Steve Leialoha and Jose Marzan Jr., colorist Leigh Loughridge, and cover / gatefold artist Nimit Malavia! The tales were all written by Bill Willingham, lettered by Todd Kelin, edited Shelly Bond and associately edited by Rowena Yow! By the way, in our mewseum we also have some lovely Simone & Ajax art by Andrew, and the purretty Fathom art by Bill!
After that are 17 tales of Clara the Raven, the Snow Queen, Blossom, Pinnochio, Gepetto, Lake, Santa Claus, Stinky the badger, the little dog, the 3 Goats, Boy Blue, Blossom, the North Wind, Dare, Connor Wolf, Ghost, and Toyland illustrated by Andrew, Steve Leialoha, Neal Adams, Mark Schultz, David Peterson, Russ Braun, Lee Garbett, Gene Ha, Peter Gross, Joelle Jones, David Hahn, Lan Medina, Aaron Alexovich, Teddy Christiansen, Niko Henrichon, Laura & Michael Allred, Rachel & Terry Dodson, Lee Loughridge and Andrew Dollhouse!
Those tales are then followed by 4 tales of the transitional times, including the 10 page tale of Maddy, Mundy, King Cole and Fabletown pencilled by Lan Medina, inked by Mark Farmer and colored by Lee Loughridge; the Frankenstein chapter illustrated by Megan Levena and colored by Andrew Dollhouse; the Death page illustrated by Bryan Talbot and colored by Andrew Dollhouse; and the longly – awaited gala coda for Snow White, Rose Red and Bigby Wolf, with the lushly beautiful two – page spurread by Buckingham and c Dollhouse! Yattahh!
As if that fiesta of fables were not enough the book is topped off by more art by Buckingham and Leialoha, the author’s farewell message, a peek at his writing purrocess, the key to the cover art, and the widdle batch of creator biographies! It is such the poignant, thrilling, charming, sentimental, bittersweet, amewsing and beautiful tale of what fates await the many residents of Fabletown and the other enchanting locations, and I think that it is one of the most awesomest finales ever for a wonderful series! That is all for me, and nyow here is sis
to begin our manga mewsings with my review
of Magika: Swordsman and Summoner vol. 1!
In the harem fantasy manga with some nudity & lurid fan service, Kazuki is the only male student at the all – female, magic academy in Japan, where they purractice summoning divine entities on the astral plane. This causes the fuss at the academy and distresses his sister Kanae who flirts with her adopted brother! She is the student purresident at the rival sword fighting school, where Kazuki would have enrolled if it not for his mystic mark! The story is by Mitsuki Mihara, and the art is by MonRin with the assistance of Gran, based upon the character designs by CHuN.
It was originally published in in 2014 by Kadokawa Corporation, and the English edition is published by Seven Seas! Volume 1 is intended for the older teen readers, it was translated by Jill Morita, adapted by Lee Otter, purroof read by Patrick King, edited by Adam Arnold and assistantly edited by Lissa Pattillo, with the lettering & layout by Courtney Williams and cover design by Nicky Lim! Chapter 1 introduces Kazuki’s adopted origin, Kanae’s frisky intentions, her affectionate friend & magic academy student purresident Kaguya, the origin of summoning and the two schools,
Kaguya seems to have a mysterious connection with Kazuki! Chapters 2 -5 offer more of the mythology, rules of magick, the students and the celestial entities known as Divas who they summon.
LizLisa is the stern teacher like a sergeant, Mio is the voluptuous top – rank student seen upon the cover, Koyuki is the tsundere elfin girl also of the top rank, and Hikaru is the shy androgynous vice purresident! Each student summons a diva, such as petite Leme who moves into Kazuki’s room at the mansion – like dorm, and purromises ultimate power if he can seduce the other ladies!
Kazuki would rather be a respected friend than a harem king, but Leme purrvokes the snobby sempai until they insult Kazuki too far, so he challenges Mio to a duel! There are tropes aplenty such as the harem, love triangle, fan service and other archetypes, but some of the characters are likable with comedic bits and interesting mythology. I like the poses, expurressions, grilled fish, magickal FX, the grandly palatial architecture and the alluring appurral such as the lingerie, uniforms and the ornately skimpy summoning costumes! Nextly I would like to discuss
Non Non Biyori vol. 1!
Hai! Written & drawn by Atto, Non Non Biyori is the charming whimsical tale of girls at the small school! It was originally published in in 2010 by the Kadokawa Corporation, and this English edition was published last month by Seven Seas! Volume 1 is purriced at $12.99 in the USA and $14.99 in Canada, and it was translated by Jocelyne Allen, adapted by Shanti Whitesides, purroof read by Janet Houck, lettered & laid out by Jennifer Skarupa, edited by Adam Arnold, assistantly edited by Lissa Pattillo, and published by Jason DeAngelis, with the cover design by Nicky Lim!
At the Asahigaoka Branch School in the agricultural town of the small population and the slower pace far from the big cities, there are only the five students enrolled: first grader Renge with the Lavender hair, Hotaru the fifth grade transfer student from Tokyo with the Black hair, Natsumi the seventh grader with the Red hair, her eighth grade sister Komori with the long Brown hair, plus Komori and Natsumi’s ninth grade brother Suguru. They are introduced in the 1st chapter along with Renge’s lazy 24 year old sister Kazuho-sensei, who is the only teacher with little to do!
The girls have plenty of time to pontificate the least things such as the bus schedule, cow crossing, leaky roof, pieces of candy, and how cute Hotaru thinks the petite Komari is, although Hotaru’s expurressions and actions are misinterpurreted! Things purrk up in chapter 4 when Hotaru & Renge try to catch the escaped rabbit, only to be trapped within the hutch; and chapter 5 is the spooky bed time for Natsumi & Komori after the arguments and the movies before bed; and in chapter 6 Kazuho-sensei takes the class to the rice field where whimsically unfortunate incidents occur!
As she oversleeps in chapter 7, the waiting students occupy themselves with the cat cradles and clay kitty sculptures, including the cute catgirl! Hotaru & Komari hike to the sweet shop in chapter 8, and the girls go to the river with a watermelon, report cards and a crab as the Spurring semester ends in chapter 9! The tales are so much fun, the characters scenery are wonderfully rendered, there are also a few bonus gag strips and sketches, and I will give Non Non Biyori vol. 1 the grade of the “A” as in Asahigaoka! I am all done, and nyow here is Illyana-sensei to tell us about
12 Beast vol. 2!
Hai! 12 Beast is by Okayado, the author of Monster Musume which we also enjoy, and both series purrtain to a reluctant chap whose life winds up surrounded by a harem of monster girls! Whereas Monster Musume is about the girls from the other world who movie into his home, in 12 Beast it is the guy who winds up in the other world! In this case, Eita is a high school video gamer otaku & ninja who gets telepurrted to their world, where the village of harpy folk hoped that he would help to defend them from the giant mecha monsters controlled by an enemy gamer!
This amewsing comedic fantasy / action tale is full of the game references and the ribald fan service! It was originally published in in 2013 by the Kadokawa Corporation, and this English edition was published last month by Seven Seas! Volume 2 is purriced at $12.99 in the USA and $14.99 in Canada, and it was translated by Ryan Peterson, adapted by Shanti Whitesides, purroof read by Janet Houck and Lee Otter, edited by Adam Arnold and published by Jason DeAngelis, with the lettering and layout by Ma. Victoria A. Robado, and the cover design by Nicky Lim!
Eita, Aero the peppy cute harpy girl and Captain Jawea the sterner warrior harpy girl land in Labyrinth Town which is populated by the minotaurs who are very tall, strong, and known for their mining & metallurgy. They meet Asteria the very kind, powerful and talented blacksmith and go on a dungeon crawl full of deadly traps to find the item needed to repair Eita’s power gauntlet! Asteria is larger at 7.5′ tall and the 56x31x46″ size compurred to Aero’s 32x21x31″ size and Jawea’s 35x22x33″ size! I mention this because the boobies are often focused upon in the manga!
The gauntlet comes in very handy (ha ha) when he has to help defend the town against another giant enemy mech! The boss battle is laced with the villain’s sarcastic comments and the gaming terminology. We still do not know much about the villain, although he is rather mean to his ram girl assistant. There is also the bonus hot spurrings side story incident! The manga has a light fun ambience, delightful character designs and intricately detailed architectural scenery, and I am curious to see who they will meet in volume 3! For my next review, I would like to discuss
A Centaur’s Life vol. 6!
Written & drawn by Kei Murayama, A Centaur’s Life is one of my favoritest manga series! It is such a beautiful, charming, slice – of – life tale set in a contempurrary world similar to ours, but instead the inhabitants are the centaurs, fauns, kemonomimi, angels; the dracon, unicorn, snake people, frog people and other species of people! It is a very thoroughly envisioned and designed world, with intricate cultural, historical & scientific notes, beautiful character & scenic and endearing characters such as Himeno the centaur, her family, friends and other students!
We have met Himeno’s purrents, aunt, uncle, widdle niece Shino-chan, and Shino’s best friend Maki-chan! Himeno’s best friends are Omaki the satyr girl and Nozomi the Dracon girl! Their high school classmates include Sassassul the snake girl, Akechi the satyr girl, Inukai her unihorn girlfriend, and Manami the angelic class president who has four widdle crossbreed kitten girl sisters, including youngest Sue-chan and triplet sisters Chinami, Chiho & Chigusa! The delightful manga was originally published in Japan in as Centaur No Nayami by Tokuma Shoten Publishing,
The English translated version is published here by Seven Seas, it was translated by Greg Moore, adapted by Holly Kolodziejczak, lettered & laid out by Jennifer Skarupa, edited by Adam Arnold, published by Jason DeAngelis, purrroof read by Patrick King & Conner Crooks with the logo design by Courtney Williams and cover design by Nicky Lim! Volume 6 is suggested for the older teen readers purrhaps due to nudity & sexual topics. Himeno’s family chases a mysterious peeping tom who might be an alien, and Sassassul‘s tale of a rousing adventure hints at more aliens!
Omaki has an argument at school and is curious about certain sexual topics; a famous froggy CEO visits the school; and Shino-chan has fantasy adventure dreams! The merfolk students discuss boobies, Eri-chan’s purrforms in a festival where she encounters a giant sea creature; the triplets have the same dream, Shino-chan & Maki-chan watch a magical girl TV show, and there is a metafictional afterward at a hot spurring! A Centaur’s Life continues to be a joy to read, and I will give it a grade of an “A” as in Akechi! Nyow here is Formality again, with her review of
Akame Ga Kill vol. 3!
Arigato! Written by Takahiro and drawn by Tetsuya Tashiro, Akame Ga Kill pertains to the Night Raid team of assassins who work for the rebellion against an oppressive government that comits the many atrocities. Opurrating from a secret mountain base, Night Raid is compurrised of Akame who is uses the poison demon blade sword, Mine the snipurr with the soul gun, Lubbuck the master of the deadly strings, Bulat in the supurr armor, Najenda the boss, Leone whose beast belt buckle transforms into the fiece catgirl, and Tatsumi who is the determined rookie!
The use the legendary mystic weapons are known as the Teigu, but unfortunately some of their evil enemy opponents are also thusly armed, and the Night Raid has suffered plenty casualties, recently including Sheele who was armed with the giant shield scissor Teigu. The very well illustrated tale is full of intense action and emotions, but it is also full of very visceral images of the brutal bloody combat, plus the graphic scenes of the gory tortures and murders, harsh language and some nudity, so it is definitely not for the widdle kitties or for the squeamish readers!
The manga was originally published in Japan in 2010 by Square Enix, and the English edition of the manga is published here in the USA by Yen Press! Although most of the manga that we are reviewing this month just happens to be published by Seven Seas, Yen Press has certainly published many titles that we crave such as Spice and Wolf, K-On, Wolf Children. Omamori Himari, G.A.: Geijutsuka Art Design Class, Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro, Sunshine Sketch, Suzunari, Sword Art Online: Girls Ops, High School DXD, S.S. Astro, and Ichiroh… but I have digressed!
Akame Ga Kill Vol. 3 has the $13.00 USA price & $14.00 Canadian purrice, the 210 pages including the Black & White manga chapters 10 – 14 plus the notes and 2 color pages, it was translated by Christine Dashielle, lettered by Erin Hickman, and the front cover is graced by the pic of Leone in her powerful catgirl form! She is paired with Tatsumi for a hit, but it takes an emotional toll while they still grieve the loss of Sheele, As they continue their training and vigilance, their enemies commit further atrocities whilst framing the Night Raid and luring them into the trap!
This time the enemies include sadistic General Esdeath and her elite trio of thugs Daidara, Nyau and Liver who are known as The Three Beasts. As Akame and Lubbock stake out the city, Leone attempts to pounce upon Esdeath, but retreats upon sensing the trap, whilst Bulat & Tatsumi battle The Three Beasts to the death upon the deck of the ship in the canal. It is an epic boss battle with further fatalities and origin revelations, but I should not further spoil the intense plot! That is all for our manga reviews, so nyow I will turn The Mew over to Lizzy who wants to shine
our celebrity catgirl spotlight upon the catfolk of
the Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder games!
Arigato! This monthly portion of The Mew is to honor the famous catgirl characters of movies, TV shows, comics, literature, internet, games and toys from many decades and around the world! Our broadly – inclusive and purrogressive criteria has ranged from those nekomimis who actually have feline the DNA, including anthropurmorphic feline females & lycanthropes to those who just dress the part, the kindred spirits of the kindred jungle & purrehistoric girls, and those who have the cat-titude or style to be considered as “honorary” catgirls!
We have included catgirl, kemonomimi and furry fantasy artists, authors, sites and publications too! We have purreviously shown the spotlight upon some of the feline femme fatales of the fantasy role – playing games such as the goddess Bast, GynoSphinxes, WereTigers, the Tabaxi, and nyow it is the Catfolks’ turn! They are among the playable characters’ races in the 3.5th edition of the Dragons & Dragons game and the similar Pathfinder game! Dungeons & Dragons has been around since 1974 and it is currently in its 5th edition rules.
In the Races of the Wild supplement book by Skip Williams in 2005 for D&D – gosh that was 10 years ago – there are 3 pages purrtaining to the Catfolk race! They are bipedal felinoids of various breeds who are taller than a house cat, with the fur similar to a lion, tiger, leopurrd or others! They are sociable, adventurous, curious, spiritual, passionate & good – natured tribal nomads of warm tempurrate & tropical grasslands which they purrfur to colder regions. They are quick ‘n energetic with very keen senses such as the nocturnal vision!
They get along fine and trade with most other races, although they purrfur to have contact with the smaller villages instead of the larger cities. Their own domiciles tend to be the tents or lean-to type of structures which can be quickly assembled or packed up! Like most folks they can choose from numerous purrofessions, but they are purrticularly good as Rangers! The female coiffure tends to be short ‘n loose whereas the males favor the braided style! In the book there is a delightful color illustration of a Catfolk couple by Emily Flegenschuh!
Meanwhile there are 6 pages purrtaining to a different version of the Catfolk in the Pathfinder game’s Advance Race Guide book, which is a supplement to the game’s Core Rules Book, published by Paizo in 2012! That type of Catfolk are graceful, slender furry bipeds with neko tail, ears, eyes, claws & colors who are not as tall as humans. They are very graceful, quick, nimble, agile, stealthy clever and lucky with the keen senses and balance, with the supurrb spurrinting, climbing, hunting and tracking purrowess and various purrofessions!
They tend to be generous, faithful, sociable & curious felinoids of the “chaotic good” moral dispurrsition who like to hunt, gather & explore! They might have their own custom & magickal weapons & gear too, such as the claw blades, the softpaw boots, the cat’s eye crown and magick kitty spells! There are two illustrations of them in the Guide book, and he depicted female is the beautiful monk catgirl weilding the nunchaku weapon, wearing the bikini top, tunic, beads & bracelets atop her soft gray fur with the purretty whiskers, spots & rosettes!
The Advance Race Guide book it even lists the most popular male & female catfolk names and the deities they might worship! It is a beautiful hardcover book full information & illustrations of other interesting races such as the Kitsune, Merfolk, Centaurs, Aasimar, Samsaren, Nagaji, Gillmen and several others, nya! These books are fascinating to read and are full of many beautiful illustrations to admire, and can contribute to many hours of RPG fun with a good group of friends! That is all for this month’s spotlight, but it will shine again next month!
Oh look, here come more of our friends, nya!

We are so glad that y’all could attend! So, what have y’all been up to?
When I have not been in my office or on purrtrol, I have been reading and relaxing! I considered riding my motorcycle on the mainland highways, but the weather there has been so humidly hot, so I stayed here where the tempurrature is not as severe! My bike might have the fiery Red paint, but it does not want to roast upon the road!
Hai hai we are so very lucky to be neither too hot and dry or too windy and wet as some regions are, but our department has vigilantly continued to educate the proper swimming, grilling, wiring and fireworks safety! When I have not been in the office, on the patrol or teaching the safety, I have been reading, swimming and working out!
Fortunately we have not recently expurrienced hazardous incidents at the forest, lake, beach, or estuary! Cinefex http://www.cinefex.com is the quarterly magazine published by Gregg Shay & devoted to the movie & TV visual FX, from the CG & purractical FX to the models & make-up! It is full of expurrt articles, intermews with the filmmakers, and the many great photos! We reviewed Age of Ultron in the May Mew, Fury Road in the June Mew, and Jurassic World in the July Mew! Director George Miller is among the crew who is intermewed for the 20 page Mad Max article, and it is neat to read about the history of the movie and details about Max’s world; and see how they conjured the villain’s citadel, the dust storm, Furiosa’s arm, the car chases and the pole cat stunts! The 25 page Avengers article reveals a lot about the FX for Hulk, Iron Man, Ultron, The Scarlet Witch, The Vision, Nick Fury’s Helicarrier, the buildings and battles!
Gosh it hard to believe that the original Jurassic Park movie is 22 years old! The 19 page Jurassic World article discusses the making of the park scenes, gyrosphere cars the the Indomius Rex, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Velociraptors, Gallimimus, Mosasaur, Pterosaurs and various other critters! Finally the 18 page article about San Andreas is the thorough coverage of the FX for the earthquake disaster movie starring The Rock! This was a great issue which I will give the high grade of an A as in the ankylosaur, and there are more articles at the Cinefex site’s blog!
That big Mosasaur had a nice tasty shark for lunch!
I love to look at those magazines’ costume and FX photos!

Ellie is the firm athletic 850 lbs, measures 13.5 Hands high at the equine withers and stands slightly over 7 feet tall, compared to Nya-sensei who is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs the fighting trim 164 lbs! When she is not at the dojo, gym or helping at Nyo-sensei’s magick shop, Nya-sensei enjoys the anime, reading, mewsic, dancing, swimming and cheering for her friends at other sports events! In this pic Ellie does pullups in the gym as Nya-sensei kindly looks in and leaves a fresh bottle of water! Misty used the pens and colored pencils to render the beautiful illustration!
Nextly in Guest Gallery 3 is Misty’s adorable illustration of “Sailor Luna”! In the Sailor Moon manga created by Naoko Takeuchi, Luna is one of the cute magickal guardian cats who help the other heroines fight the villains, monsters and disasters! In the live – action TV Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon adaptation, Luna transforms into the catgirl known as Sailor Luna, who is portrayed by lovely actress Rina Koike in the pretty sailor fuku costume with the tiara, ribbons, bows, collar & cat bell! MIsty used various pens & Prismacolor markers to sweetly render the cute widdle heroine!
Just added to Gallery 7 http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery7.html is Mike’s pic of Misty’s character “Strawberry dressed as Tabitha”! Strawberry is a lovely, sweet. Pink-haired gynoid inspired by the delightful Saber Marionettes J anime series, and Tabitha is Misty’s sexy original catgirl character! In this image, somehow their clothes got swapped, so the more voluptuous Strawberry is trying to squeeze into leaner Tabitha’s smaller attire! However it is the very tight fit, and the stretched Red tube top barely covers the boobies whilst the jeans shorts might not ascend the hips!
Fortunately the stretchy fishnet hose and the thong panty are in their proper places, and at least the cute accessories fit better, such as the choker, the pendant, head band, wrist band and bangles! Not only that, but Strawberry got the widdle paw print tattoo on her hip just like Tabitha has; and she is making a “cat ears” gesture with her hands! Kawaii! Tabitha is unseen nearby, and is having the opposite problem in trying on Strawberry’s much larger clothes! Mike rendered this pic for Misty with the pencil, Micron pens, Copic markers, Prismacolor markers & colored pencils!
Nextly in Gallery 7 is Mike’s illustration of “Merrie Khriste Massu”, alias the super heroine Sailor Christmas http://www.sailorchristmas.com! Inspired by Sailor Moon, this “fan senshi” character was created by our friend Alexcia Reynolds, who is a great artist and author of original and fan art and fiction, web sites and plushy dolls! She was our guest for the August 2010 Mew, and perhaps y’all have seen her delightful illustrations & photos in our mewseum! She also wrote the “Anniversary” Pokemon / Catgirl Island cross-over fan-fic, which you can read at our Tales of Catgirl Island page!
Khriste is a 21 year old history teacher, which is appropriate because her Sailor Christmas persona has existed for over 2000 years! She is 6 feet tall and weighs 146 lbs with short Red Hair, Green eyes and Pale Tan skin! Her birthday is December 25th, and her hobbies include shopping, growing Poinsettias, hosting parties and preparing feasts! She is wearing the Green bikini that she bought at one of our island’s boutiques, as she strolls amongst the fresh local foods and flowers at the farmers market! Mike rendered the pic with the pencils, Micron pens, Photoshop CS2 and the mouse!
Lastly but not leastly added to Gallery 7 for this month is Mike’s widdle pencil sketch of a perky “Manga-ka Nekomimi”! This was drawn at one of the comics & manga art tutorials that Mike & others conducted at one of the Barnes & Noble bookstores upon the mainland! The classes tend to last about 2 hours for the couple of dozen kids teenagers, parents and grandparents of the various ages, genders, races and skills with pencils and paper to draw the heads or full bodies of the characters of various species! So, what do y’all think of the latest additions to the mewseum?
(cries) Oh I am so happy and honored by another pic of me in the mewseum!
(cries) Me too! I am so flattered and.. oh, oh I am going to need the tissue!
The joyful tears were purrpared for, nya! (offers Ellie & Naynko the tissues)
Ellie & Nyanko:
Arigato, gozaimasu, nya!
Misty sure did another great job of so marvelously capturing their portraiture, details and spirits!
Hai hai she got the physiques, colors, clothes, expurressions, and the gym equipment just right!
Sailor Luna’s expurression, coiffure and richly vibrant colors are wonderfully purrfect too!
Rebecca exquisitely rendered Bonnee and Floraidh’s lovely couture, wings and features!
Every aspect of Bonnee is excellent illustrated, from her supple ears to her cute belly button!
Floraidh’s tight abs and strong thighs are nicely framed by the iridescent blouse, skirt and boots that match her wings!
Strawberry is so delightfully whimsical in that pose with that adorable grin and spectacularly long splay of braided hair!
Hai hai, she is so dear, purretty and sweet, but seems upon the verge of bursting out of the tube top and thong, heehee!
The crates of Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Braeburn, Fuji, Gala and Honey Crisp apples in the Khriste pic are giving me the craving!
I just noticed that Mu’awin the butterfly of Alexcia’s Cybernetic Showdown tale is purrched upon one of the Anthuriums in the Khriste pic!
I should revisit Alexcia’s other sites too, such as Pokemon Amber, Sailor Tiger’s Grotto, Book Of Otaku Senshi and Sailor Chibi-Moon’s World!
Mike’s widdle sketch of the catgirl looks so peppy and cute, and it sounds like there was the fun time at that Barnes & Noble bookstore, nya!
Yep, it went pretty well, and I’d like to thank the store’s employees & customers for the fun activities! Petra, Bun, thank y’all for presenting the new art!
What is next, nya?
The Cat Lady Sings…
So… what is Lizzy’s surpurrise?
We are curious about that!
Oh, um, I have something I want to give to Becca… (gives Becca a purrettily wrapped widdle box)
Arigato! (finds an extra special fortune cookie in the box)
Oh, what is the fortune?
(cracks open the cookie to find a gold ring inside) Nya ni—?
Will you marry me?
(Mike and 15 Ladies of The Mew watch in wide-eyed anticipation)
(crying happy cyber catgirl tears) Hai!
(Mike and 15 Ladies of The Mew joyfully cheer for the purroposal)
(snaps a photo of the engaged couple) nya!
Nyow it will be a celebratory luau!
Whew! Well, I guess that will wrap it up for another edition of The Mew, nya!
