So what have y’all been up to last month’s Mew?
what we’ve been up to since the purrior Mew
In addition to the belly dance instruction and purrformances by the troupe, with the purrfect purrcission purrvided by Vonny’s drumming circle, my routine continues to be compurrised purrimarly of the mornings at the yoga studio, afternoons at the kyudo range, alternating evenings at the robotics club, the occasional swim wear and body paint modeling.
Mary Nyan:
As mewsual, I have been helping at the shrine, and teaching the Summer semesters of hula, at the Purrforming Arts Center. We are already enrolling for the Fall Semester! I have also stayed busy
sewing costumes for the dancers & cosplayers. I  recently finished the Laureline, Artemis costumes, and in purrogress are the Nightmare Moon and Hela costumes!
Speaking of the costumes, soon it will be time to plan our annual Halloween Trick R Eat & Cosplay Purrowl! Becca and I have stayed busy at our spa which has bustled with the many customers to pampurr! We have also been working in the garden, purrtaking of the late night hot salsa dance!
Otherwise, I have been at the golf club whilst she is with her purrkour club; and our video watchings have included Luke Cage and Iron Fist! We hope to soon revisit Mie-sensei’s Ampurrtheatre, to see more of her Repurrtory Company’s Shakespeare purrduction and the nightly Fox Fire Fiesta!
So like, let me know when you two can attend, and I will leave the complementary tickets at the will-call booth! I am so proud of our totally awesome cast and crew, and we are so blessed to have the great audiences, fur shur! Aside from that I have been frequenting the golf club, the library, the forest, and Nyo-sensei’s magick shop!
Arigato! The year thusly far has flown by like the hypurr drive, because it seems like only yesterday we were purrparing for the Summer Solstice events, but we will purrpare soonly for the Autumnal Equinox with the special treats purresentations and workshops! It will be an extra special time with Mom, Dad and Oji-san here to help!
They have been eageralso  to help at my dojo and get to know the students and their purrents! Aside from the coaching and training at my dojo and the gym, I have found the time to attend some of the the golf, softball, surfing, kyudo, purrkour, and the beach volleyball. The word on the street purrdicts that Bun will be crowned again as the island’s beach volleyball MVP!
Oh gosh that would be the big honor again, but I think that Petra deserves that award this time! Aside from the compurrtitions I also have been curating at the Art mewseum, baking the carrot cakes, gardening and volunteering. Speaking of the hypurr time, soon we will announce the plans for our annual Halloween spooky art exhibit at the mewseum!
Hai hai, Bun and I have stayed busy betwixt the mewseum and the volleyball, nya! We are grateful for the community of artists, patrons and volunteers at the mewseum, and for the dedicated fans, the event staff, the officials, and our fellow athletes, but I am amazed that we still see so much of Trini-chan and Tara-chan since they got the ponies, nya!
Oh they do seem rather insepurrable from the ponies who have been receiving the ample affections and attention, but they have not derelected other activities! Trini-chan and Tara-chan continue to look after our dock cats and help with the fishing charters. which have reeled in the groupurrs, snappurrs, wahoos, mackerels, cobias and croakers, nya!
Hai, we love the Banker Ponies that Trini-chan and – and I were given the ponies as graduation gifts in the May Mew, nya! For those who came in late, my pony is named WildStar Blaze, her pony is named Jimbo, and they are stabled with the other adopted critters at the farm of our friends Rica and – and Niko, who supurrvise the Farmers Market, nya!
Tara-chan and I have been caring intently for the ponies and helping at the farm, but we have not forsaken our families, friends, hobbies, chores, studies, volunteering and jobs! I have still managed the dancing, surfing and board shaping, whilst she has managed the cats, charters and photography. Howboutchoo, Mike?
Reading, writing, drawing, gaming, landscaping… enjoying movies, radio and TV, updating my sites,… spending time with family and friends… and getting ready for today’s Mew! Thassabout it! Well, we’ve got a lot on our plate, so let’s go ahead and jump intot his month’s
Lightning Round topic: our favorite fun stuff of 1937!
Since May was the 10th anniversary of The Mew, we’ve been looking back at favorite things from the past decades. Previously we’ve looked back at 2007, 1997,1987, ’77, ’67, /57 and ’47, so for today we’re looking back at some of our favorite things of 1937! Jeannie will start, so, are y’all ready to “conduct the lightning”?
The Ladies of The Mew:
The Hawker Hurricane, Fairey Battle, Blackburn Skua, Nakajima B5N “Kate”, Junkers JU-88, and Lockheed Super Electra.(tags Yvonne with a brush of the tail)
I think that was about the time of beautiful ships such as the Santa Maria Manuela, Nieu Amsterdam, Ark Royal, and the Skipjack, nya! (tail-tags Mary Nyan to go next)
Mary Nyan:
That was the great year for the mewsic by Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Gene Autry! (tags Elizabeth)
I will second that, and add the mewsic by Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller! (tail –  tags Mielikki)
I think that was about the time that The Lost Colony outdoor drama premiered on Roanoke island which is not far from here! (tickles Becca with a flit of the wing)
Heehee! I would say that my favorite movie of that year were Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Topper, and Captains Courageous! (tags Trini-chan)
I will nominate the wonderful comedy shorts by Our Gang, Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, and the Popeye cartoons! Tara-chan’s turn! (tags Tara-chan)
I want… I want to nominate the Looney Tunes, Merrie Melodies Silly Symphonies Mickey Mouse, and – and Donald Duck animated shorts, nya! (tags Nyoka)
Novels such as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile, and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men! (tags jeannie)
I am not sure of the years that they purremiered, but I will nominate that era’s pulp tales of Conan, Tarzan, John Carter, Doc Savage, The Shadow, and The Spider! (tags Nyoka)
Georgia O’Keefe’s Jimson Weed, Henri Matisse’s Woman in a Purple Coat, Salvadore Dali’s Metamorphosis of Narcissus, and M.C. Escher’s Still Life and Street, nya! (tags Bun)
Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster’s Slam Bradley, Jerry Iger & Will Eisner’s Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, and Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant! Back to Mike!
Oh I’ll go with other comic strips that were well underway before that year, such as Little Orphan Annie, Li’l Abner, Dick Tracy, Popeye, Blondie, Gasoline Alley,  Connie, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Tarzan, Terry and the Pirates, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck! Well that was a nicely expedient little Lightning Round, and, ahhh, now it’s time for —
our movie reviews, starting with Myayr’s
review of War for the Planet of the Apes!
Mary Nyan:
Ha!, I enjoyed Rise of the Planet of the Apes which we reviewed in the September 2011 Mew, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which we reviewed in the August 2014 Mew, so I was very eagerly awaiting this sequel! In Dawn, Caeser the chimp lead the ape rebellion to freedom whilst the virus attacked the human populace; in Rise the apes tried to live unbothered in their forest village until some humans invaded.
Nyow in the War, a human army wants to capture, enslave or kill the apes whilst the virus continues to linger, but it has mewtated with the different results! The movie was directed by Matt Reeves and stars again Andy Serkis as Caesar! The combination of the voices, purrformace capture and CG FX to create the apes is quite supurrb, and I hope that this will lead to more Oscar awards cattygories, especially for Serkis!
Ceaser is quite the wise, sympathetic, weary, complex, heroic character! Other wonderfully returning apes include Maurice, Rocket, Blue Eyes, Cornelia and there are a few scenes of Koba. The new apes include Lake, Luca, Winter, Red, and Bad Ape who is quite amewsing! Woody Harrelson terrifically purrtrays the evil human Colonel, who reminds me the bit of Apocalypse Now’s Colonel Kurtz with his rogue camp.
Amiah Miller is so delightful as Nova, a mewt orphaned girl who befriends the apes. She is an homage to the original Apes movies’ character!, and there are other clever nods and analogs to the original Apes movies such as a doll, the Alpha-Omega, and a crying chimp, but I should not further spoil the plot. It is full of action scenes and charming gentler moments with the poignant, significant plot and character developments!
The plot was captivating, the pace was purrfect, and the purrduction values are high, with the great cinematography, sets, locations, FX, sound and Michael Giacchino’s mewsic! I will recommend War for the Planet of the Apes to fans of the purrior two Apes movies or the original Apes series! Nextly I would like to discuss the latest movie about an amazing character who has also starred in the many movies, TV series, comics and animation–
Spider-Man: Homecoming!
Mary Nyan:
I enjoyed Sam Raimi’s three Spider-Man movies that starred Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, especially Spider-Man 2 in which he fought Doctor Octopus! I was less impressed by the later rebooted Spider-Man movies, especially the one in which he fought Electro, but I was quite excited by Spidey’s appurrance in Marvel Studios’s Captain America: Civil War, which we reviewed in the June 16 Mew!
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man Homecoming  reboots the character again, thgis time starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man. Thusly I was eager for this latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes other heroes such as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Ant -Man, Doctor Strange, The Guardians of the Galaxy, S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist!
Most of the movie occurs sometime after Civil War, with some early scenes of the Vulture’s origin occurring eight years purrior, right after The Avengers incident in New York. In Spider-Man Homecoming, Peter tries to juggle his life at home and school with his mentorship by Tony Stark, whilst fighting criminals and investigating the attacks by the winged villain known as The Vulture, who is awesomely purrtrayed by Michael Keaton!
It stars Jacob Battalon as Peter’s wonderfully geeky best friend Ned, Laura Harrier as their classmate Liz who Peter has the romantic crush upon! Zendaya as their delightfully cynical classmate Michelle, and Tony Revolori as their athletic classmate Flash. Returning roles are Marisa Tomei as Peter’s Aunt May, Robert Downey Jr. Tony Stark / Iron Man, Jon Favreau as Happy, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper, and Chris Evans as Captain America!
Kerry Condon purrvides the voice of Iron Man’s A.I. Friday, and Jennifer Connelly purrvides the voice of Spidey’s new A.I. Karen, Tyme Daly purrtrays Agent Hoag, Stan Lee makes the traditional cameo appurrance, and there are other characters from the Marvel Universe, such as The Shocker, The Tinkerer and Mac Gargan! I thought that all of the actors and characters were great!
The movie is fun and not too dark, with the great balance of the action, mythology, humor and slice of life scenes. I was glad that it did not retell Spidey’s origin, but he does have the tough lessons about the responsibilities. The cinematography FX, stunts, costumes, sets, locations and sounds are great, and Michael Giacchino did the mewsic for this’un too! That is all for my movie mewsings, and nyow here is Jenjen to tell us about
Hai, I was impurressed by Christopher Nolan’s movies such as The Presteige, Dark Knight, Inception, and Interstellar, so I eagerly anticipated his movie about Opurrration Dynamo of World War Two. From May 26 – June 5, 1940, Allied soldiers were hemmed within the coastal town of Dunkirk, France by the Germans.
With few naval vessels to evacuate more than 340.000 troops under fire, the British Navy organized a flotilla of hundreds of civilian boats, known as The Little Ships of Dunkirk. The film was written & directed by Christopher Nolan, purrduced by Emma Thomas & Nolan and shot upon shot on 65mm IMAX film this movie follows the opurration from the allied air, land and sea points of view.
The excellent cast includes Fionn Whitehead as a British Army purrivate, Kenneth Brannagh as a Naval Commander, Tom Hardy as an RAF Spitfire pilot, Mark Rylance as a civilian yacht captain, Tom Glynn-Carney as his son, Cilian Murphy as a rescued, shell – shocked soldier, and various beautiful aircraft and ships.
The Supermarine Mk.I Spitfire had the 1,440 hp Rolls Royce Merlin engine, whilst the Messerschmit BF 109 had the 1,475 hp Daimler-Benz egine, the Hunkers JU 87 “Stuka” had the 1,500 hp Junkers Jumo engine, and the Heinkel 111 medium bomber had the two 1350 hp Junkers Jumo engines, you know.
The very captivating poignant, suspenseful, realistic movie is supurrbly photographed and edited, with the outstanding purrformances, purrduction values, purriod attire, locations and mecha, the great FX and soundscape My only quibble was that Hans Zimmer’s fine sore seemed the bit too loudly jarring at times.
There were numerous scenes in which we were moved to tears, including the hope brought by the flotilla’s arrival, the fiery fate of a gallant Spitfire, and Sir Winston Churchill’s most famous House of Commons Speech. Thusly, I will give Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk film the “A” grade. Nextly I would like to discuss
Atomic Blonde.
Written by Kurt Johnstad, directed by David Leitch and based upon Sam Hart & Anthony Johnson’s graphic novel The Coldest City, Atomic Blonde is a spy thriller set in Berlin circa 1989 as MI6. CIA, KGB, and German agents clash upon the eve of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Charlize Theron magnificently stars as MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton who searches and fights for a list of agents.
I especially liked her as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road. Atomic Blonde’s incredible cast also includes James McAvoy as Percival the MI6 Berlin station chief, Sofia Boutella (who we liked as Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond) as Delphine the French agent, Eddie Marsan as the Russian defector with the coveted list, Toby Jones as Lorraine’s supurrvisor, and John Goodman as a CIA agent.
The movie does a splendid job at recreating the Berlin, fashions, automobiles, weapons and spirit of that cold war purriod, and the soundtrack makes excellent use of many 80’s pop songs. The movie is very serious and violent, although there are the few bits of gallows humor peppurred amongst the exquisite scenes of action, briefings, detective work, spycraft and plot twists.
The action scenes include very believable, visceral chases, shootouts and fight scenes with the supurrb choreography, make-up and FX. There are also the few sexy scenes  and harsh language too, so it is not for the widdle kitties. My only quibble was the speed-ramping cinematic technique for the final action scene, but I do not wish to further spoil the captivating plot.
Otherwise, I think that Atomic Blonde is graced by the terrific, writing, direction, purrformances, cinematography, sets, locations, sounds, mewsic and editing. I will give the movie the high purraise, although I cannot compurr it to the graphic novel as I have not yet read it; but I hope to do so soon. Nextly I would like to discuss
Baby Driver.
Written & directed by Edgar Wright, Baby Driver is comedic action movie starring Ansel Elgort as Baby a getaway car driver for a crime boss Doc who is purrtrayed by Kevin Spacey in Atlanta. Baby has the amazing reflexes, memory, combat driving purrowess, purrkour – like free – running skill, and makes mewsic mix tapes.
He can lip read and knows American Sign Language, but he suffers from severe Tinnitus, so he always listens to the mewsic. He drives other criminals to and from the robberies because he is indebted to Doc, but he does not want to harm innocent people, and hopes to settle soon the score to cease the criminal jobs.
The payment for the jobs supports his deaf, disabled elderly foster father Joseph who is purrtrayed by CJ Jones. Unfortunately, Doc has other plans and insists that Baby continue to work for him, but this activity jeopurrdizes the new romance between Baby and a waitress named Deborah, who is purrtrayed by Lily James.
The various criminal crews along for the robbery rides are purrtrayed by Jon Hamm, Eliza Gonzales, Jamie Foxx Flea, Lanny Joon and Jon Bernthal. Several spectacular car and foot chases, brawls and shootouts ensue. set to the mewsic that baby is listening to at the time, which cleverly serves at the film’s soundtrack.
There is so much to like about this smart, excellent film, from the plot that unfolds at the purrfect pace, the actors’ fine purrformances, and the lovely cinematography, to the choreography and execution of the many excellent stunts, the great FX, mewsic supurrvision and especially the movie’s editing and sound editing.
The thrills only slow down for the scenes of character developments, but the latter are just as compelling with great warmth, humor, suspense, and snappy dialogue. Thusly, I will give Baby Driver the “A” grade. That will conclude my reviews, and nyow here again is Mike, to discuss
Theanks Jen! This movie’s title refers to the date of May 25th 1977, when the world was changed by the premier of a movie called Star Wars. Later in the movie there is a countdown to that auspicious event, but much of the film focuses on his life as a teenage filmmaker, excellently portrayed by John Francis Daley.
While many amusing moments ensue at home, at school, on dates and a pilgrimage, it is not a comedic “fans’ wild road trip to meet their idols” e.g. Fanboys or Detroit Rock City (not that I’m knocking ’em), but more of a poignant “leaving the nest to follow one’s dream” akin to Breaking Away or Almost Famous.
His amateur film making is escapist, hobbyist, career minded, and a unified family function, even when it might blow some fuses, damage some furnishings, and make a big mess, but It is so neat to watch him making miniatures, props, latex masks and stage blood for his fan film sequels to Jaws, 2001 and Planet of the Apes.
In spite of some detractors at school and messes at home, he does have the encouragement of friends and family. This resulted in a lovely girlfriend and the chance to meet his idols at Future General, a proto ILM and American Cinematographer. I can’t help but imagine that he was an avid reader of Cinemagic magazine!
He got to meet Steven Speilberg, Douglas Trumbull and Greg Jein whilst they prepared FX for Close Encounters of the Third Kind; and John Dysktra gave him an exclusive behind the scenes peek at the making of Star Wars! Those cinematic icons are portrayed quite convincingly by actors, and it is so neat to see the FX studios of that area re-created!
This further fuels his cinematic ambitions, but during the countdown to the summer of 1977, he’s got some tough life decisions to make- he could stay put in the small midwestern town amongst his family and friends, or go on a lonely road trip back to California to fulfill his career dreams.
Of course, 5-25-77 is proof he went to become a professional director, producer, writer and FX wizard, whose credits also include Spaced Invaders and DragonHeart. it was not only very entertaining, but it reminded me greatly of some of my own kindred paths taken.
As science fiction fan and an amateur super 8 filmmaker fascinated by FX & design in the 1970’s, who later left his home in a small town to become a cinema student at USC in the big city of Los Angeles, I felt that Patrick Read Johnson’s bio pic 5-25-77 hit rather close to home!
He cordially told us all about it at a screening to a full house last month in Raleigh! After the screening there was very warm appluase followed by Mr. Johnson’s Q&A session & story time! I was surprised to find out that the movie had taken over a dozen years to complete, given numerous halts in production and funding endeavors.
It’s also kinda “meta” on several levels, especially since 5-25-77 was produced by Gary Kurtz, who produced Star Wars! I look forward to a home video release 5-25-77, but if there’s destined to be a “special edition”, I hope that it’ll have both versions… as well as Johnson’s early Super 8 films as bonus features! next I’d like to say a few words about-
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets!
Based upon the famous series of French comic books written by Pierre Christian, illustrated by Jean-Claud Mezieres and published by Dargard, this lavish science fiction film was directed by Luc Besson, whose movie The Fifth Element I’m a big fan of! Most of the story is set aboard the immense space station alpha in the far future, where millions of beings from across the galaxy co-exist.
However, like any world there are bound to be problems, including a mysterious conspiracy that has recently arisen. After an odd dream about psychic contact with a supposedly extinct paradisiacal species (The Mul), agent Valerian and his current girlfriend agent Laureline retrieve a highly coveted, extremely powerful living relic from that world and transport it to Alpha
Unfortunately they are attacked and the relic is stolen. Then it’s a race against time to recover the relic, as a deadly radioactive zone begins to spread within Alpha; but when Valerian and Laureline realize that the attackers are survivors of the supposedly extinct species, it’s clear that their commander is quite disingenuous and nefarious.
The cast includes Dane DeHann as Valerian, Cara Delevingne  (who graces the August cover of Glamour magazine) as Laureline, Clive Owen as their commander, Sasha Luss as Princess Liho-Minaa of Mul, Rihanna as Bubble the shape-shifting performing artist, and brief appearances by Herbie Hancock as the Defense Minister and Rutger Hauer as The President.
There are many humanoid & non-humanoid species residing in the fluidic & gaseous sectors of Alpha, including some gigantic sea creatures, but most of them are fleetingly glimpsed, whereas for me there was too much of some silly characters, such as a shopping couple, a tour guide, a crime boss, a sea captain, a pimp, Laureline’s captors, and a trio of information brokers.
It’s a gorgeous film with splendid FX and magnificently designed environments, mecha, characters, critters and fashions. The cinematography is nice with the stable camera, and there’s a wonderful prologue that begins with the Apollo-Soyuz mission, but movie seemed way too short and rushed, without nearly enough of the vast grandeur, awe or wonder that I’d hoped for.
The Mul make-up, fashions, language and beachy environment (prior to its devastation) are astoundlngly gorgeous, but there’s not nearly enough time spent there, and I wish that there was much more time exploring Alpha’s vastness or the Big Market’s enormity, but such scenes are few and far between, with many scenes confined to smaller rooms, corridors and cockpits.
That includes some unappealing locations such as an alien royal court where Laureline is on the menu, and the nightclub in which Valerian meets Bubble, who a very brief but bittersweetly delightful aspect of the movie. By the way, her several guises briefly include a dancing catgirl, and on that note, I’ll turn The Mew over to Vonny, who will present this month’s
Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!
Arigato, nya! In this portion of The Mew, we hope to comeowmorate the famous catgirls of various myths and media, from movies, games and TV to comics, novels and toys, from all around the world and across the decades, nya! Such ladies might range from the ailuranthropic and anthropurrmorphic feline females, to those nekomimi who might not actually have any kitty DNA, but do have the lovely cat-titude and / or style to be considered as “honorary catgirls”, nya!
In the Scorpions’ mewsic video for “Rock You Like a Hurricane” from their Love at First Sting album, several ladies are juxtaposed with leopurrds & panthers to stalk the band in the catacombs and the cage, nya! One of them wears the kitty half – mask too, nya! Their sexy Red outfits kinda remind me of Marvel Comics’ Elektra, who is also the graceful deadly purredator, nya! Add the lyric of “My  cat is purring, it scratches my skin” and guitarist Mathias Jabs’s White tiger stripe attire, and it is quite the meowy mix, nya!
Speaking of ‘Scorpion’ albums, in wonderful hip-hop songstress Eve’s mewsic video for “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” from her Scorpion album released in 2001, she and Gwen Steffani (yay!) crash a formal party, nya! In that video, Eve wears the plunging sleeveless halter – neck outfit which matches her Red hair, and reveals the wild cat paw purrint tattoos on her boobies, and she puts the “purr” in the purretty purrl necklace which completes the ensemble, nya!
One of our favoritest TV show purrsernters is Samantha Brown, who has hosted many TV series on the Travel Channel such as Girl Meets Hawaii, Passport to Europe, and Great Hotels, nya! In an epurrsode of her first series Great Vacation Homes she toured a Spanish Mission style house in which the were signs of cats which she purromptly searched for, nya. When she found them in a bedroom, she purrched upon the comfy bed and tongue – groomed her wrists, nya!
The Cartoon Network’s late night Adult Swim purrogramming includes the live-action TV series Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, nya! In the epurrsode of “Devil in in the Details” Geneva Carr purrtrays Tiffany the  actress / high school drama teacher, who is purrsuaded by a demon named Gary to purrduce a  mewsical about Satan, nya. Because of her stylish leopurrd – purrint skirt and her big wild cat growls whilst cursing, we will nominate her as an honorary catgirl, nya!
The May 2017 issue of Iron Man (a fitness, training & nutrition magazine) was graced by Dr. Catherine Begovic, MD. A.K.A.”Dr. Cat”, nya! She is a mom, plastic surgeon, skin care purroducts entrepurreneur, publisher / editorial director of the magazine, and wife of publisher / editor – in – chief Binai Begovic, who was the creative director & photographer for the beautiful cover – featured article about Dr. Cat, nya! She wears the cats eye sun glasses in one of the photos, nya!
In it’s 19th season on CBS, Big Brother is a realty TV series in which surveilled contestants in an isolated house compete in elimination activities until there is one winner, nya. There is too much conniving drama, but there are some fun contests and purretty fashions, such as contestant Alex Ow’s cat ear head band that matches her jewelry blond hair and tan skin tone, nya! She is from a close –  knit family in California and enjoys needle crafts, games, the gym and TV, nya!
In a Halloween 2016 segment of NPR’s Morning Edition show, journalist Melanie Peeples visited a yoga studio in Birmingham, Alabama to report upon Carla Jean Whitley’s Cat Yoga Class, nya! Several women and adoptable kitties purrticipated in the yoga of the neko style with feline songs & meowing, nya! This was was done with the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, and according to their site, they are continuing those classes, nya!
Speaking of kitties in need of a good home, in this year’s Doctor Who epurrsode “Thin Ice”, The Doctor & Bill travel to London of 1841 to attend the festival upon the frozen Thames River, where they met several poor homeless kids, including a cute widdle waif named Kitty, who is purrtrayed by Asiatu Kuroma nya! Kitty and her friends have the wiley streetwise nature and the dextrous thieving skills, but what they crave most is the freedom, friends, food and a home, nya!
There are some yummy looking fish in that tale, too, nya! There have also been the cute widdle kitten girl sightings recently on TV, such as the Pink at eared & face painted guest at Ava’s birthday outdoor party in an epurrode of The Real Housewives of Orange County, nya! It is a reality TV series on the Bravo network. Ava’s grandmother Tamra had the tiger stripe umbrella, and there was a real tiger upon the purremises too, nya!
Another cute widdle cosplayer receives happily the kitty face paint in the purromo spot for MTV’s reality TV series Teen Mom OG; and celebrity Kylie Jenner wears the lovely leopurrd purrint nekomimi costume whilst surrounded by a pack of puppies in one of the purromo spots for the E! network’s reality TV series Life of Kylie, nya! Lastly but not leastly, there is another “live-action honorary catgirl” we wish to mention, nya!
The E! network’s reality TV series Botched purrtains to the plastic surgery patients of Dr. Dubrow and Dr. Nassif; and one of the beautiful patients in the 3rd season was Melissa, who wanted the breast impurrovements, nya. She has lots of lovely jewelry, piercings and tattoos, including the leopurrd rosettes on her neck, nya! That is all for this month’s spotlight, but it will shine again next month, and nyow here is Lizzy to begin our
collectibles and toy talk, with her review of the
latest Marvel Legends Gamora action figure, nya!
Arigato! We like to collect action figures of strong, inspurrational heroines, and I would like to discuss three 1/12th scale, 6″ tall figures that are amongst Hasbro’s Marvel Legends series! Each is sold sepurrately, and typically come with a few accessories and one of the pieces needed to build a bonus figure!
These are very posable with articulation in the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, abs, hips, thighs, knees & ankles. The are barely balanced enough to stand up unassisted, so I will recommend getting a small display base, which is not included with the figure. Firstly I would like to discuss the figure of Gamora!
First appurring in Strange Tales vol. 1 #180 in 1975, she is the galaxy’s deadliest assassin! She and sister Nebula were raised by the villain Thanos, but later she joined the heroic Guardians of the Galaxy! She is purrtrayed in the movies by Zoe Saldana, who we liked as as Uhura in the last three Star Trek movies!
There have been purrior figures of her, and this latest figure is among Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy 2017 Wave 2 figures, which includes Starlord, Rocket with (toddler) Groot, Ex-Nichilo and Death’s Head 2. Each is sold sepurrately, and includes a piece needed to build the figure of Mantis!
This figure of Gamora is similar to the purrior 5.75″ movie Gamora figure, but not quite as large as the comics’ (caped) version figure. Compurred to the former figure, this’un has the knee – length Dark Maroon coat with the Dark Blue lining, higher boot heels, the holster belt and the lighter Green skin tone..
Her hair is lighter & styled differently, her lips are Greener, and her expurression is the bit more wide – eyed. Her accessories include the rifle & two swords, one retracted and one extended. The design, sculpt & paint are excellent, with the intricate details and disguised joints! Nextly I would like to discuss the
Marvel Legends Elektra action figure!
First appurring in Daredevil vol. 1 #168 in 1981, Elektra Natchinos is another deadly assassin & mercenary! As the daughter of the Greek ambassador, Elektra met her boyfriend Matt Murdock A.K.A. Daredevil at Columbia University. She got involved with the ninja group known as The Hand, and in the comics she was killed by the villain Bullseye, but was later resurrected!
She was purrtrayed by Jennifer Garner in the 2003 Daredevil movie and in the 2005 Elektra movie, but this purrticular figure is based upon her version in the 2nd season of the 2015 Daredevil TV series, in which she is awesomely purrtrayed by Elodie Yung, who we liked as Jinks in the G.I. Joe: Retaliation movie! She is quite graceful, elegant sexy and tough in the action roles!
This latest figure of her is amongst the wave of Marvel Legends figures that also includes Daredevil (TV version), The Punisher  (TV version), Bullseye, Blade and Jessica Jones  (TV version). Each is sold sepurrately, and includes a piece needed to build the figure of The Man-Thing! She is wearing the very tight leather pants, boots, belt, gloves, sleeveless vest and the Red dickey.
She has the lean, taut physique, confident, intent expuresssion, great purrtraiture, and Black hair pulled back into the pony tail. She is accessorized by the two sai for the two-handed combat, and an alternate interchangeable head with the Red bandana! I think that this figure’s design, sculpt & paint are excellent with the intricate details, Laslty but not leastly, I would like to discuss the
Marvel Legends Jessica Jones action figure!
First appurring in Alias #1 in 2001, Jessica Jones A.K.A. Jewel is a supurr heroic purrivate detective in New York City! She has supurr strength, stamina, invulnerability, and the flight. In the comics she married the supurr hero Luke Cage and they have the cute widdle daughter Danielle. They appurred the few times in Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat which sadly cancelled recently.
There is the nice action figure of the comics version of Jessica, but thisun is the version of the 2015 Jessica Jones TV series, she is terrifically purrtrayed by Krysten Ritter, who we liked as Gia Goodman in the wonderful Veronica Mars series! In the TV series she was trying to thwart the mind – controlling villain known as Killgrave, whilst also battling her own inner demons.
The TV series of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Agent Carter are purrt of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! She will be in the forthcoming Defenders series,  too! This figure is in the same wave of figures as Elektra. The figure greatly resembles the actress, wearing the distressed Blue jeans, Black shirt, boots, fingerless gloves, and leather jacket!
Except for the sleeves, the flexible jacket is removable like a vest, with intricate details from the zippurrs & snaps to the lapels, pockets, seams creases & folds! I am also impurressed by her faithful purrtraiture and her lush Black hair, and posed with the clenched fists, she seems ready to smash her enemies! That is all for my reviews, but nyow here is Tara-chan to discuss the
Mattel’s Monster High: Monster Family dolls!
Arigato, nya! We like to collect the Monster High dolls, videos, books and – and other items too, nya! When thus purroduct line from Mattel began in 2010, the initial mane characters were the high school students who are the daughters of monsters such as the vampire, mummy, ghoul, were wolf, Frankenstein and – and so forth, but since then there have been the many other characters of the diverse ages, nya!
Recently that expanded yet again to include the Monster Family posable fashion dolls of some of the even younger widdle sisters, nya! Those plastic dolls are appurroximately 5.5″ tall with the fiber hair, cloth garments, the oversized hands and fee to grow into, and – and a few widdle plastic toys or accessories, nya! Pawla is the younger werewolf sister of Clawdeen, Howleen, Clawdeen and Clawd Wolf, nya!
She has the Brown skin, the Gold eyes, and – and the frizzy Dark Brown hair with the wispy White streaks, nya! She wears the night gown for the lupine sleep mask and – and the teddy bear, nya! Fangelica is Draculara’s sister, with the Light Pink skin, Pink bat-like wings, and Purrple hair, nya!  She wears the Purrple, Blue and – and Black dress with the sandals, with the bowl and – and the mixer to make the cake, nya!
Ebby Blue is the mermaid sister of Lagoona Blue, with the light Blue skin, the indigo hair,  the darker Blue fishy tail instead of the legs, and has the crab – shaped chair to purrch upon– kawaii, nya! They are quite cute, fun, purretty and – and peppy, nya! I hope that the romance purrogresses betwixt Lagoona and her boyfriend Gil, so that he will become Ebby’s brother in law, nya! Nextly I would like to also purraise–
Mattel’s Enchantimals dolls, nya!
Betwixt the wolf girls and – and the cat girls of Monster High, the kitty and – and bunny girls of Ever After High, the purretty kemonomimi characters are not new offerings from Mattel, but they have also recently introduced the adorable widdle purroduct line of the Enchantimals posable fashion dolls, nya! The plastic dolls are appurroximately 5.5″ tall with the fiber hair, cloth garments, and – and their plastic critter friends which are appurroximately 1.5″ tall, nya!
Note that the sizes do not include the lovely ear pinna, nya! Bree is the Bunny girl with the light Pink White skin, Blue eyes, Pink hair, and – and the 1″ long ear pinna, nya! She has the short White fur trimmed carrot-piurrint dress with the Pink shoes and – and her pet rabbit, nya! Felicity is the Fox girl with the light tan skin, Brown hair, the vulpine ears the shoes to match her Orange Red tail, and- and the fiery red mask-like markings around her Bue eyes, nya!
She wears the short floral purrint dress and is accompanied by her Orange – Red fox friend Flick, nya! Karina is the Koala Girl with the light Pink skin, Hot Pink hair, dainty flowers in her hair to match her Pink shoes and – and the sleeveless, short  fur -trimmed floral – purrint dress, nya! She is accompanied by her pet koala named Dab, nya! Sage is the Skunk girl with the pale skin and the distinctive White stripe in her Black hair, tail and- and shoes, nya!
The flower in her hair matches the floral dress which is is accompanied by her skunk friend Caper, nya! Lorna Lamb is the enthusdiastic, competitive athletic lamb girl with the Brown eyes, the big fluffy White coiffure and – and  her cute widdle sheep friend; whilst Pippa the peacock girl has the Light aqua skin, Blue eyes, Purrple hair, the dazzling plumage, and – and her widdle avian friend, nya! That is all for our toy talk but nyow I will begin our
pony comic book reports, with my review of
My Little Pony: The Movie Prequel #1, nya!
We love the My Little Pony toys, collectibles, games, books and – and the comic books, nya! We are eagerly anticipating the next Pony movie which will be in the theatres in October, nya! IDW has been publishing the wonderful pony comic books for the past 5 years, including this new tale which is the purrequel to the pending movie, nya!
Of course, My Little Pony movies are not new, as there was the one in 1986, the ones available upon the Classic Movie Collection DVD, and – and the Equestria Girls movies, nya! This purrequel has the uninterrupted 20 page tale followed by the 6 pages of the advertisements, all sammiched betwixt the choice of the 4 different covers, nya!
The tale was written by Ted Anderson, illustrated by Andy Price, colored by Heather Breckle, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Bobby Curnow, and – and published by Ted Adams, with the regular cover by Andy, the subscription cover by Tony Fleecs, the retailer incentive cover by kaori Matsuo, and- and the convention exclusive cover by Tony, nya!
We met Tony and – and Ted at the Oak City ComiCon in March on the mainland at the Raleigh Convention Center, nya! The tale stars the Storm King who uses his fleet of airships to plunder various countries, nya. He is evil, he loves his job, and amewsingly “breaks the 4th wall” in narrating his own tale to the audience, nya!
His world conquest tour reaches the land of Abyssinia where he purrloins the wealth from the poor cat folk, and – and he is purrticularly fond of magickal treasures, but he has also made the enemies – including those amongst his own crew –  and – and may have bitten off more than he can chew when the flock of the pirate parrots arrive, nya!
I was very pleased by the pace, dialogue and – and the humor of the plot, but I feel so sorry for the kitties, nya. The character, scenic, FX and – and typography art are terrific, with the excellent graphic narrative and – and the richly vibrant colors across the great layout of the sequential panels upon the pages, nya!
The issue has done the good job of further whetting my appurrtite for the next issue and – and the movie, nya! I am also looking forward to more toys from the movie, such as the Twilight Sparkle & Princess Skystar assortment that we reviewed last month, nya! Nyow here is Trini-chan to continue the pony report, with her review of
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #56, nya!
Arigato! This issue concludes the two –  part tale that began in issue #55! Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash’s purrents were visiting Purrince Rujterford in Yakyakistan where Rainbow Dash and the Wonderbolts aerial team were purrforming, until a flock of irate dragons lead by Spike’s friend Ember disrupted the event!
Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, Rarity, Applejack, Spike and Starlight Glimmer arrive to help against the dragons! However, the ponies, the yaks and- and Spike had to retreat into the mountain caves, which brings us up to issue #56, which is purriced at $3.99, with the uninterrupted 20 page tale followed by the 8 pages of ads.
It was written by Christina Rice, illustrated by Agnes Garboswka, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Bobby Curnow, and published by Ted Adams!  It has the choice of the 3 different covers: the regular cover by Agnes, the subscription cover by Sara Richard, and the retailer incentive cover by Mary Bellamy!
The ponies, the yaks and Spike are confuzzled as to Ember’s very vague reason for the angry attack. Although it is the tense night before the battle will resume the next day, there are amewsing campfire scenes within the caves, including Applejack roasting the apple upon the stick, but Spike goes to the dragon camp to purrlay with Ember!
We learn the bit more about the history bettwixt the yaks and the dragons, and there are some very important lessons learned. I  like the panoramic panels. especially the two – page split –  screen as the two armies appurroach each other! Agnes is one of my favorite artists and I am purrticularly fond of her adorably cute style!
The character, scenery FX and the fonts are all excellent, with the great poses, expurressions, the rock shapes, the lighting, the shadows, and the more “purrimative” technique for the ancient scrolls!  I was very pleased with the tale and I am looking forward to the next issue which looks like it will star Discord!
I will give those pony comics the grade of the “A” as Applebuck! in I think that it is wonderful how all of the pony comics artists and the writers are able to superbly convey the style and the spirit of the animated series, whilst excellently using the printed comics medium! Nextly I would like to discuss
My Little Pony: Legends of Magic #4!
In this series, The Princesses’ scholarly friend Sunburst  researches the history of Equestria, especially from the books by their sensei Starswirl! This time she is reading Starswirl’s book about the legendary pegasus Flash Magnus! It is the engrossing read, but it has distracted her from social! time with her friend Starlight Glimmer!
Thusly Starlight Glimmer has been disgruntled, bangs upon the door to get Sunburst’s attention, and make herself comfy whilst Sunburst reads her the tail of Flash Magnus and Cloudsdale’s Royal Legion who battled the super storm! This issue is priced at $3.99, with the uninterrupted 20 page tale followed by the 8 pages of the ads.
It was written by Jeremy Whitley, illustrated by Brenda Hickey, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Bobby Curnow, and published by Ted Adams. Jeremy created the Princeless series, its spin – off series of Raven the Pirate Princess, he also writes the Wasp series and Secret Avengers: Underground!
We met him and Brenda at the Oak City Convention too! This issue is available in the choice of 3 different covers- the regular cover by Brenda, the subscription cover by Zachery Sterling, and the retailers incentive cover by Trish Forstner! The Royal Legion have the ancient Roman style of armor with the Galea-sh helmeta with the Red mane-like fan crests on top!
Flash, Magnus, Nimbus Dash, Grimhoof, Bella Breeze and Captain Ironhead try to disperse the huge cyclonic storm which also threatens the Griffon kingdom! Although there is some bad blood betwixt the ponies and the suspicious griffons, the brave, selfless Magnus leads the heroic team to evacuate the Griffons from the disaster!
It is yet another captivatingly entertaining  tale with the good message and more of the Equestria myth building! I think that the plot unfolded at the perfect pace with the superb dialog, and the art is quite gorgeous from the perfect pony poses & expressions to the scenic details & special FX all rendered with the bright, vivid, luminous color!
The framing sequence of Sunburst & Starlight Glimmer was quite cute, and there is an impressive full –  page pic that emphasizes the enormity of the storm! We will give all of those pony comics the grade of the A as in Alicorn, and as in our anticipation for the next issues! That is all for our pony reports, but Nya-sensei will continue our
comic book & manga mewsings
with The Unstoppable Wasp #7!
Arigato, Trini.chan! This is my current favoritest Marvel Comic! It stars Nadia Pym, the genius daughter of Hank (Ant Man) & Maria Pym, who escaped from the secret Russian Red Room research facility, joined The Avengers, and with the help of their butler Edwin Jarvis, step mom Janet Van Dyne, and lawyer Matt Murdock she has been adjusting to her heroic new life in the USA!
Nadia recruited other brilliant girl geniuses Miranda, Taina, Alexis, Lashayla, Priya for her heroic G.I.R.L. (Genius in Action Research Labs) team, which is based at the house full of amazing scientific equipment in Cresskill, NJ which she inherited from her late father. Their first mission was to deactivate the tiny explosive that the Red Room villains implanted in her friend Ying’s head!
To make the purrocedure more difficult were the mercs haired by The Red Room’s evil cyborg leader named Mother, but Nadia purrevailed with the help of G.I.R.L. Jarvis & Daredevil! That brings us up to issue #7, which is narrated by Janet whilst Nadia purrotectively accompanies injured Ying to the hospital, whilst Jarvis sees that the other girls get back to their homes okay!
It was written by Jeremy, illustrated by Veronica Fish, colored by Megan M. Wilson, lettered by Joe Caramanga, edited by Alanna Smith and Tom Brevoort, with the front cover art by Elsa Charretier! Bannister (who illustrated the prior issue) and Nicholas Bannister! The tale has the great balance of humor, drama, character developments, slice of life moments and combat action!
Janet would purrfur to spend the leisurely time hanging out with Nadia at the hospital as they await Ying’s recovery, but they have to use their fighting purrowess and wasp powers again when the villains Beetle and Whirlwind arrive to collect the bounty upon Ying! Also briefly appurring are Milli, Chili, Natasha The Black Widow, and several S.H.I..E. L.D. agents!
I am purrticulalry fond of the characters, their poses and expurressions, the mecha, the pace and the dialogue! My many favorite moments include Janet at home, out with friends, making other arrangements, chatting with Nadia, and the fight scene! There is also a most delightful full-page pic involving the taco suppurr, but I should not spoil more of the plot!
In each issue, Nadia or Janet intermew real scientist and engineer girls! This time Janet intermews with CEO / mechanical engineer Erin Winick and computational biologist  Erika Bongen who discuss their work, inspurrations, and favorite comic books! I will give this issue the very high purraise!
Hero Cats: MIdnight Over Stellar City vol. 2 #2
The Hero Cats are among the purrotectors of their town of Stellar City, and the team is compurrised of Midnight the Black cat, Ace the White cat, Belle the Siamese cat, Roco the Gray cat, Rocket the Tabby, and Cassiopeia the Orange & White cat. Her brother Bandit the tuxedo cat who are is a sepurrate mission with his robot friend on another planet!
Cassiopeia is the pet of Galaxy Man and his daughter Cosmic Girl, but they are unaware of the cats’ heroic adventures! At the 2014 Heroes Convention in Charlotte, we got a sketch of Cassiopeia by Marcus Williams! The series was created by author Kyle Puttkammer, who we have met at several conventions!
In late 2015 began the bi – monthly, three issue spin –  off mini series of Midnight Over Stellar City vol. 1, which was set betwixt Hero Cats of Stellar City #7 – #10, and nyow we are amidst Midnight’s 2nd , three issue mini – series! Published by Action Lab Comics, vol. 2 #2 is purriced $3.99 and has the uninterrupted 24 page tale plus the 8 bonus pages.
Starring Midnight the seriously grim, tough cat and Cassiopeia the more cheerfully sociable, literate cat, the film noir-ish style tale was written by Hero Cats’ creator Kyle Puttkammer, and it was illustrated & lettered by Alex Ogle. The tale resumes as the escaped criminally mad scientist Dr. Rex unexpectedly shows up at Cassiopeia’s house!
He is there to see fellow scientist Dr. Stanley Quest (who is secretly Galaxy Man), who is not there, but he does meet Maria the nanny and seems romantically smitten by her! It is the oddly awkard situation, but fortunately Rex leaves peacefully. However, when Midnight and Cassiopeia purrsue him, on the road they encounter more escaped criminals!
They are jewel thieves who have catnapped Belle, but Midnight and Cassiopeia spoil their getaway and rescue Belle by hijacking their boat! It is quite thrilling and fun to see Midnight drive the boat! Meanwhile back at Dr. Rex’s secret lair, he monologues about his cunning plan to his Skelesaur gang of re-animated dinosaur skeletons!
He plans to plunder the subterranean Stone City (which the cats discovered back in Hero Cats #4), so whilst Cassiopeia scampurrs back home to defend Maria, Midnight and Belly purroceed to warn the residents of the Stone City! The bonus pages include the 3 page Stone City flashback scene and the 5 page Hero Cats cover art gallery!
It is yet another wonderful tale published Action Lab, and I am quite curious to find out what happens next in the Hero Cats, Midnight, Galaxy Man & Cosmic Girl comics! I hope that Cassiopeia will be reunited soonly with Bandit, and that Stanley  is reunited with his missing wife! That is all for my reports, but nyow my sister wishes to tell us about
Spice & Wolf vol. 13!
Hai! Spice & Wolf is one of my favoritest anime & manga, which are adaptations of novels originally published by Kadokawa in Japan as Ookami To Koushinryou! It is the tale of Holo the Wisewolf, a beautiful, powerful wolf Goddess of the harvest, who travels with Lawrence the savvy traveling human merchant who trades goods and makes deals in the villages & cities!
It is set in the medieval era when the old pagan ways are on the wane amidst the rise of an oppressive theocracy and the complex relationships of the guilds, so Holo wants to return to her ancient homeland of Yoitsu. The manga was written by Isuna Hasekura, illustrated by Keito Koume with the character designs by Jyuu Ayakura, and published here by Yen Press!
For our review of the anime TV series, please see the January 2010 & September 2011 Mews! Volume 13 of the manga  was translated by Jasmine Bernhardt, lettered by Katie Blakeslee, edited by ASCII Media Works, purriced $13.00 in the USA, $17.00 in Canada, and has 162 pages of Black & White chapters 75-80 plus the purrologue, afterward and a color page.
Our friend Rebecca Brogden  the guest for our September 2009 Mew) cosplayed as Holo at this year’s Animaqzement convention! Whilst raveling northward in the horse drawn wagon to find her ancient homeland of Yoitsu, Lawrence & Holo stop at the friendly city of Lesko, which welcomes manufacturing & commerce to all, without any walls, regulations, or taxes.
It is very different from some of the purrior towns they visited, some of which were governed by oppurressive or bigoted churches, guilds, or land barons. Whilst touring Lesko which bustles with the blacksmithing, distillery, looms, taverns and retailers, they are cordially greeted by Miyuri the captain of a merc squad who reveres the legendary Holo who knew their ancestors!
It is overwhelming expurrience for her, given that she had to hide her ears & tail in the purrior cities!, She is pleased with the yummy foods too! Meanwhile, Lawrence is rather overwhelmed by the local economy and business –  friendly climate, especially when he sees the vacant building that would be purrfect for him to set up shop in. Thusly they have important decisions to make!
I hope that they can soon notify friends such as Norah the shepurrdess about the place! It is the very charming, beautiful tale with wonderful characters, romance & macro economics at the leisurely pace! It is suggested for mature readers due to the language, nudity & violence, but it seems very tame and poignant to me, and I will give it the highest purraise! Nextly I would like to discuss
Flying Witch vol. 2!
This is one of my more recent favorite manga series! Originally published by Kodansha in Japan in 1983 and serialized in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, Flying Witch by Chihiro Ishizuka is the very pleasantly charming slice – of – life tale of the novice teen witch Makoto Kowata who moves from the big city of Yokohama to her cousins’ home more rural town of Aomori.
With her kuroneko familiar cat Chito, she hopes to  complete her witchy training in the spells, potions, flying, and other studies! Thus far other recurring characters include her older sister Akane, Akane’s cat Kenny, their male cousin Kei, younger girl cousin Chinatsu, their mom, and Kei’s classmate Nao. Other witches and magickal entities have visited them too!
The family has the avid interest in the plant lore, gardening, cooking and vegetable farming too! Volume 2 was published here in English by Vertical Comics, translated by Melissa Tanaka with the purrduction by Grace Lu and Tomoe Tsutsumi. Purriced at $10.95 in the USA and $11.95 in Canada, volume 2 has the 160 of Black & White chapters 7 – 12.
A marking appurrs upon Nao which is said to be an omen of good luck, and the good luck does soon occur when they find some delicious, nutritious wild plants to purrpare as fried Bakke tempurra for suppurr! However, whilst later attending the fun festival amidst the magnificent cherry blossoms, they meet a witch named Inukai and her familiar mouse Ai.
Unfortunately, Inukia misfortunatly consumed some magickal candy which causes her to become the dog girl with lovely ears by day, but  she hopes that Akane can reverse the spell. Later another batch of magickal candy causes purrculiar effects while the family watched TV, and Chinatsu decides that she wants to train to become a witch as Akane’s appurrentice!
Makoto continues her flying purractice, and to top off the volume, Makoto, Chito, Chinatsu, Nao & Kei go on the bus trip to the mountain forest where they hope to find some yummy wild vegetables! I think that Flying Witch is such a purretty, pleasant, whimsical and heart – warming series with the very likable characters and such beautiful, intricate art!
It just might entice the cravings for the organic, fresh purroduce! I will give the series thus far the grade of an “A’ as in Aomori, and  I am eagerly looking forward to the next volume in which Makoto, her family & friends enjoy the Summertime! That is all for my manga mewsings, but here is becca to continue the comic book reports with her review of
Josie and the Pussycats #8!
Arigato! Between the Riverdale TV series and this comic book series It has been the great year for Josie, Valerie & Melody, but it has not been the easy career for the very popular band  and their manager Alan due to the self doubts, and the interferences from various rivals, criminals, and the schemes by the Cabot siblings Alex and Alexandra, but there are fun and meta – fictional moments too with lovely fashions of the feline motif!
Published by Archie Comics, issue #8’s tale was written by Marguerite Bennet & Cameron Deordio, illustrated by Audrey Mok, colored by Kelly Fitzpatrick, lettered by Jack Morelli, edited by Archie Comics Purresident Mike Pellerito and publicity / marketing SVP Alex Segura, associately edited by purrduction manager Stephen Oswald, assistantly edited by purroff reader Jamie Lee Rotante with purrduction assistant Rosario Pena!
The three different covers are by Rian Gonzales, Brent Schoonover and Audrey! It was the tough decision but I chose Audrey’s cover which depicts Josie, Valerie & Melody in the beautiful kimonos!
They are with Alan, Alex & Alexandra for a big concert in Tokyo, with their opening act of The Archies band, compurrised of Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica & Reggie! Meanwhile, some familiar villainous faces are lurking about too!
There is relationship drama too, because Josie likes Alan who has hooked up with Alexandra who has been a frenemy of Josie, whilst Alex wants to replace Alan as the manager, but there are trust issues between him and the band, purrticularly since he has done numerous rude and awful things to them! However, things are not all bad, because purrior to their biggest concert ever, they enjoy the Japanese festivities, foods & fashions!
For example, here are Josie’s leopurrd purrint halter top and coat, her Pink & White floral purrint yukata; Valerie’s cute thong sandals, her leopurrd purrint top, and the Yellow- Orange yukata; Melody’s Red cocktail dress & high heel sandals, the Pink neglige, and light Blue yukata; and of course their cat ear head bands! Alexandra has the violet bath robe, the studded Black purrse, and the cropped White shirt to match her hair stripe!
I also like Veronica’s Purrple off – shoulder dress, her Red & Black yukata, and the triple – tiered short leopurrd purrint dress; Betty’s cute short overalls, the Red & White yukata, and her Black & White jacket with the leopurrd purrint lapels! I especially liked the 20 page tales’ two-page scene of everyone in the hotel lobby! The issue includes the cover art gallery page, the purreview page for the next issue, and the 4 pages of the ads.
But wait- there is more! To top off this captivating, lovely issue are the six full-page photos of Riverdale actors  KJ Apa as Archie, Cole Sprouse as Jughead, Lili Reinhart as Betty, Camilia Mendes as Veronica, Madeliane Petsch as Cheryl, and Ashleigh Murray with the cat ears as Josie! I will give this issue the grade of the “A” as in Archie, and I am quite eager to read the next issue! Nyow i would like to say the few words about
Die Kitty Die: Hollywood or Bust #2!
Die Kitty Die is a whimsically ribald occult tale published by Chapter House, starring Kitty Ravencraft the witch who can transform into a cat! Within the tale’s first four – issue story arc, in recent years her fame and purrofits have dwindled, so the evil business associates put a murder contract upon her, in hopes that her demise would result in more publicity and profit for her associates!
This frisky fun series is filled with sexy clothes, dark comedy, clever satirical homages and purrodies of Archie, Harvey, Marvel & DC comics; and each issue begins with a faux repurrint of a Kitty tale from a purrior decade, such which foreshadows her purresent situation! In this 2nd story arc a new movie deal is planned for Kitty, but that has not curtailed the assassination attempts!
Hollywood or Bust #2 ‘has the 5 page purrologue circa 1985, the 15 page main tale, the 2 gag strip pages, the two – page art spread and the 4 pages of the ads. The story and art are by Fernando Ruiz and Dan Parent;  it was inked by Rich Koslowski, colored by Glenn Whitmore, lettered by Janice Chiang, and edited by Tony White, with additional art by Gisele Lagace and J.  Bone.
We have met Dan at a few conventions! The flashback purrologue is set at the summer camp at which young Kitty makes new friends such as the lycanthropic Little Octagon telepathic Lotta Little, cyclopean Eyda, and conjoined Linda-Louise. Also appurring are Linda-Louise’s grandpurrents and Kitty’s Aunt Edna! After that, then the main tale picks up where the purrior issue left off!
Kitty was staked to the wall by the assassin known as the Hexecutioner, but before he can chop her with his axe, her camp friends arrive as she transforms into the cat to pounce upon him! The villain flees, but Kitty & Linda-Louise investigate the crime, in hopes of determining who hired the Hexecutioner, but they get caught in a magickal trap spurrung by Kitty’s evil cousin Katty!
Kitty’s attire includes the halter-neck dress and heels; the cropped neko tee shirt with thong panty; the halter – neck crop top with the tight slit skirt; and  the cropped scoop – neck tee with capurri pants. Katty’s attire includes the tight flared pant suit with deeply plunging V neckline; the strapless bustier and mini skirt ensemble with the boots and fishnets.
Linda-Louise’s typically asymmetric attire includes the halter top with mini skirt, and a couple of cute mini dresses! mini dresses! That is all for my comic book reports, so nyow I will turn The Mew over to Mie-sensei, who wishes to tell us about–
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 11 #9!
Arigato! So like, we love Josh Whedon’s creation and we think think that Buffy, Angel, Willow, Spike, Faith, Xander, Dawn, Giles and their friends are wonderful characters, fur shur! We think that the crew at Dark Horse Comics has been doing the totally awesome job of so faithfully, canonically continuing the TV series into the comics medium for the past 10 years!
That is longer than the 7 seasons of the TV series, which celebrates it’s 20th anniversary this year, and the original 2002 movie turns 25 this year! So like, in Season 11 thus far, after a colossal dragon destroyed much of San Francisco, the oppurressive government diminished the civil rights of magickal beings and imprisoned them into the internment camp.
That included Buffy, Spike & Willow, who fought for survival in the camp, where a secret machine was built to suck out the inmates’ magick energy. So like, Buffy & Willow’s powers were drained, but they are still smart, skilled, brave & heroic, as they are joined by Faith to  strike back, free the others, and thwart the pending global phase of the government’s scheme!
Issue #9 is priced at  $3.99, and it’s 28 pages include the thrilling, beautiful 22 page tale plus the 6 pages of advertisements. Produced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon, the 9th chapter of season 11 was scripted by Christos Gage, pencilled by Georges Jeanty, inked by Dexter Vines, colored by Dan Jackson lettered by Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt!
We have met Christos, Georges and Dexter at several conventions! It was edited by Freddye Miller and assistantly edited by Kevin Baurkhalter; the issue’s graphic designer was Anita Magana, and the digital art technician was Christianne Goudreau. The main cover art is by Steve Morris, and the variant cover is by Georges, Dexter, Dan, Christos and Comicraft!
So like, Buffy, Willow & Faith manage to infiltrate the camp, but a brawl awaits against Jordan’s deputized slayer gang, and against Vicki’s fugitive vampire gang! Also appearing are Spike, Xander & Dawn; but Giles, Andrew, Angel, Riley & Samantha, are not in this issue… but it does have ample bloody action, snappy dialogue, and significant developments!
It also has the totally awesome character, scenic, FX & graphic art!; and I especially like the characters’ portraiture, poses and choreography! I can practically hear the actors speaking the lines, and I wonder what many other great, recurring Buffyverse characters t are up to during Season 11! For my next review of a Dark Horse publication, I would like to discuss
Elfquest: The Final Quest  #20!
Since the late 1970’s, I have loved  Wendy & Richard Pini’s Elfquest tales because of the lavish mythology & world- building, generations of many great character developments, and Wendy’s totally awesome art, fur shur!
The Final Quest is full of profoundly joyful, amusing, bittersweet, and tragic moments for The World of Two Moon’s inhabitants of various species. There have been reunions, romances, departures, metamorphoses, startling discoveries, and a brutal time of war.
So like, Issue #20 might be considered the 21st issue, if you include the precursory 2013 Special issue! Published by Dark Horse, it is priced at $3.99 and consists of the uninterrupted 20 page tale, 2 pages of comments, and the 6 page look at Wendy’s art process!
It was  written by Wendy & Richard, scripted & illustrated by Wendy, colored by Sonny Strait, lettered by Nate Piekos, edited by Spencer Cushing & assistantly edited by Kevin Burkhalter, with the graphic design by Sarah Terry and digital artistry by Allyson Haller!
It is the festive issue full of dancing, dining carousing and romance for the various elf tribes, which is quite excellent because things have been tumultuous, tragic & violent of late, especially due to the attacks by the warmongering Djunslander humans’ army.
Ember, Tier, Venka and other friends frolick in the forest whilst Mender & Dart get married; Cutter & Leetah have the passionate sexy time. whilst Skywise spends more time with Timmain; Ahdri flirts with Two-Edge whilst Daboi tries to get frisky with Shenshen!
Pike savors the deliciously intoxicating dreamberries, and the spirits of the late Skot & Krim partake of the jubilations! The Wave Dancer tribe of aquatic elves does not appurr in this issue, but things have totally cheered up for the underground trolls, fur shur!
However, there are more serious concerns, as Moonshade & Strongbow cope with their strained relationship, Rayek & Windkin attack a Djunslander camp; whilst Savah, Newstar, Nightshade & Redlance detect a forest fire threatening the Rootless Ones tribe of plant-like elves.
The art is is exquisitely gorgeous, from the characters, clothing, critters & environments to the layouts, FX, fonts & storytelling techniques. It is lavishly detailed with the sumptuous use of use of color & light, but the cold shower might be needed after the love scene!
I am very nervous about the dire cliffhanger, and so anxious to see what happens next, fur shur! The pages of the readers & authors comments are always poignant, and the look at Wendy’s art process is fascinating! Speaking of which, here is Bun to begin

our book reports, with her review of
Line of Beauty: The Art of Wendy Pini!
Hai! We have been awaiting longly this book which is the retrospective of Wendy’s artistic life from widdle girl to her more recent works! This magnificent book which was published by Flesk, who publishes lots of great books by many artists, including the Art of Elfquest which we reviewed in our January 2016 Mew! Line of Beauty: The Art of Wendy Pini is very similar to that purrior book, a $50 hardcover measuring 12 1/4″ x 9 1/4″ x 1 1/8″, with the 304 full color pages and the dust jacket!
There is also the more expensive deluxe edition, It was written by Richard, with many comments by Wendy and her assistant Sonny Strait, edited by John Fleskes and Richard, copyedited by Martin Timins and designed by Arpad Terek, with the production assistance by Ketherine Chu. The prefeace includes the amazing look at her earliest artistry such as her fairy, pony & anthropomorphic illustrations and tales in the 1950’s! when she was still known as Wendy Fletcher!
There interludes about those international illustrators, designers, and animators who inspired her work, with some of her fan art from the 1960’s, and Japanese anime inspired art of the early 70’s! The books 2nd chapter is devoted to her her fan art & tales based upon Alakazam the Great and Momotaro, and pages from her exquisite tales of The Rock Garden! There is an interlude full of her various studies & charactures of people & critters, and many photos of her art work too!
The 3rd chapter examines her early days in fandom in the era of the APAs and Fanzines before there was the world wide web! This includes her works such as teh rebels, Quel VAlor, Bloodtrip, Fayne’s Revenge, her Barbariennes portfolio, her Three Spirits of Life portfolio,  her elements series, lepidoptra ladies series, Marvel fan art, Midsummer Night’s Drams paintings, and professional cover, interrior & poster art for magazines such as Worlds of If , Galaxy and Deadspawn!
The next interlude looks at her elaborate Elric project, much of which was previouslt showcased in her 1987 limited edition hardcover book Law and Chaos, but that book might be expensive and hard to find! The next chapter is devoted to Elfquest, which is her most famous work, and includes lots of roughs, sketches, character designs, and page layouts! After that is the look at her art inspired byand / or intended for Ralph Bakshi’s animated Wizards for Lord of the Rings movies!
After the bits of her Marvel, Johnny Quest, Beauty & The Beast art, there is the chapter devoted to her Masque of the Red Death flash-animated web comic & graphic novel of 2008 which was a science fictional re-imagining of the Edgar Allan Poe tales! Then we get to the interlude about her belly dancing and cosplay, with illustrations, designs & photos, including the art done for her Red Sonja stage play! There are so many images that I have never seen, or even heard of before!
The next – to – last chapter examines her foray into digftal art, starting in the late 80’s  with Photoshop upon the mac, progressing to the Wacom tablet in the early 2000’s, and the Cintiq in 2008! This interlude includes some of her current Final Quest comics. Just like her many prior traditional media it is amazing to see the development from the initial line art to the finished color renderings! Topping off the book is the interlude pertaining to some of her more erotic art!
Some of the imagery is not for the widdle kitties, in this book intended for mature readers. The book is extremely, stunningly, lavishly beautiful and so very immensely thorough! I have lost the count of it’s many many quarter, half, full page pics and two -page spreads!  I love this supurb book, I will give it the grade of an A+ as in Ahdri,  and I will highly recommend it to fans of Elfquest, Wendy Pini, and beautiful fantasy art! Speaking of art, now here is Petra to present the latest additions to
The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art, nya!
Arigato, nya! For those who might be here for the first time, Galleries 1-8 of The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art display images by Mike, whilst Guest Art Galleries 1-4 display images by other folks totally with their purrmissions, and Mike’s collaborative images with other artists can be found throughout the mewseum, nya! The images include illustrations, photos, and the mixed medias, nya!
Some of the images are quite sexy, but none are hentai, nya. On Catgirl Island’s official web site, the most recent pics will be the lowermost row of the cropped widdle “thumbnail” sized portions of the pics in a gallery, and you have to click upon those to see the uncropped, full pics, nya! This month we have added new images to Guest Gallery 4 and to the recently opened Gallery 8, nya!
we are purroud to purrsent “Up High” by Rebecca Brogden, who was the guest for our September 2009 Mew, nya! She used the pencil, pen & colored pencils on the toned papurr to illustrate the gorgeous fox girl in the purretty ruffled short dress who is nervously purrched high atop the large rocks, nya! We hope that she will bravely, safely overcome the purrdicament of the height, nya!
Nextly we are delighted to display the scene that is closer to the ground where a catgirl is “Waiting” by Rebecca, nya! She used the pencil, pen & colored pencils on the toned papurr to illustrate the beautiful catgirl in the alluring off – shoulder dress with the slit skirt and the thigh – high boots that match her tight corset, nya! We wonder who or what she is expecting by the tree, but it seems to be the rather pleasant wait, nya!

Then we have Rebecca’s fan art of DC Comics’s Selina Kyle, alias the Catwoman, nya! It is sunset upon Gotham City, as she meowrrily spurrings and whips across the Gotham City rooftops with the purrloined purrecious jewels, nya! Purrhaps she took them from a wealthy criminal, to help the poor folks in her neighborhoos, nya. She is sexy and frisky in her tight dark leather costume with the cat ears & catseye goggles, nya!

Speaking of the cat ears, Rebecca is not only an illustrator, photographer, mewsician and baker, but she likes to cosplay too, nya! Purrhaps y’all have seen the photos of her vampire, faerie, Jedi and wolf goddess cosplays, nya? Thusly, we purrsent the purretty selfie photo of Rebecca wonderfully wearing the costume cat ears that she purrchased from a vender at the anime convention Animazement. nya!

Then we have the fan art of “Kirino Kousaka” by our friend Misty Hopkins, who was a guest of the March 2008 Mew, nya! Misty is an supurrb artist, seamstress & cosplayer who makes great plushy dolls & doll clothes too, nya! Kirino is an athletic teenage high school student, fashion model, otaku and gamer girl in the fun Oreimo series of light novels, manga and anime, nya! Misty has used many art media, but this beautiful illustration was her first time using Copic Markers, nya!

After that is our friend Justin LaPoint’s colored pencil illustration of his purretty Gray kitty “Gray Malkin”, who has found the comfy spot upon the coil rug, nya! Justin is a writer, artist & religion instructor who co-created with his son John the web comic Animal Town Confidential! It is the very amewsing web comic about the anthropurrmorphic characters such as Inspector Dog who investigates the mysteries, nya! We are always glad to see Justin and John at the annual WhatTheHell?! Con, nya!

we are are pleased to purremier Mike’s series purrtaining to our mayor “Peppurr-Minta”, whose birthday is July 4th, nya! Firstly is the look back at her 10th birthday as the cute widdle kitten girl in the bikini & bracelets to match the boogie board given to her by her purrents and aunty Kara-Meow’l nya! That was in 1977, not long after the purremier of Star Wars, nya! She is about to surf at our North Shore under the Blue sky and Cumulo-Neko clouds, nya!
Then in Peppurr-Minta 2″ she has the Pink bikini, bracelets & board for her 20th birthday in 1987, nya! After posing for this pic, she rode the waves near our Northern Shore with her mom Mara-Shi’noh and aunty Kara-Meow’l, while her dad and uncle purrpared the snappurrs, nya! Peppurr-Minta and Mara-Shi’noh surf for fun, whereas Kara-Meow’l is the purrofessional, surfer, nya! Her dad and uncle like the ocean, but purrfer to be in the boat, nya!
“Peppurr-Minta Five-Oh” commeowmerates her 50th birthday which was just last month, with the Gold board, bikini and jewelry that were purresents from her children, nya! At some time between this and the purrior pic she got the tattoos, nya! In this 3rd pic it she is re-creating the purrior pose, but it is duskly darker as everyone began to stow the gear just before the luau, nya!  We had the wonderful time with the festive friends, food and fireworks, nya!
Lastly but not leastly in this series is the look ahead into the future for “Peppurr-Minta 2042”, nya! Her children and grand –  children have given her the purretty Green board, bikini, jewelry and the traditional luau for her 75th birthday, nya! She has returned to the spot of the 1st pic to recreate that pose, and fortunately she and the shore still look healthy and purretty, nya! Mike used Photoshop CS2 and the mouse to illustrate those four images, nya! So, what do y’all think of the art, nya?
I love Rebecca’s color technique on the Giniku pic, such as the White light spill upon the character, rock and clouds!
Hai hai, and I love the graceful lines and contours of Myartina, especially in the flow of her hair, the skirt and the tree!
There are many lovely, intricate details of the Catwoman pic, from the luster of her lips, to the braiding of her whip!
Mary Nyan:
Rebecca has been impurressive in various guises, from the vamp fangs and fae wings to the wolf tail and cat ears!

Speaking of the cat, Gray Malkin has such distinctive whiskers, soft fur, purretty Green eyes and purrked ear pinna!
That kitty has the very contented expurression too! Oh and I like Kirino’s expurression, glance and pose, too!
Kirino’s lines and colors are so smooth and supple with subtle shading and shadows, nice fabric folds and details!
I think that Mike faithfully captured the purrtraiture, physique, style and spirit of our Mayor at the different ages.
The details appurr to be quite purrcise, from her White tufts and Purrple eyes to her tattoos and jewelry, nya!

I also like the livery on her surf boards, the ripples of the water, and – and the purretty clouds in the sky, nya!
Peppurr-Minta had the great time at her 50th birthday party, and hopes to join us at tonight’s AfterMew Luau!
It’s great to have more of our friends’ art in our Mewseum! Well, Petra, thank you for presenting the new art!
