Today’s Mew comes from Today’s Mew comes from Wisteria Bridge on the SouthWestern side of Catgirl Island here in Mew Hanover County, North Carolina!
On this side of the bridge is Beautiful Downtown Purrbank, on that side over there is lovely Fuyume Park, and just a bit further downstream of the RiverWalk is the island’s Purrforming Arts Center, where it’s 82 degrees under a lush arbor and a Blue sky full of Cumulo-Neko Clouds! ! I’m Mike, the show’s “Purrducer”, and here are The Ladies of The Mew!

So what have y’all been up to last month’s Mew?
what we’ve been up to since the purrior Mew
Oh as mewsual have been busily helping at the shrine, teaching the hula classes, and sewing the costumes for the dancers and cosplayers, but it is not nearly as hectic since Halloween!
Bun and I have continued to coach at the Fall beach volleyball camp, and we had the record turnout for our macabre art exhibit and other fun Halloween activities at the art mewseum, nya!
Hai! We are very grateful for the support of gracious artists, staff, friends and patrons of the mewseum, and for the fans, officials, event staff, and fellow athletes of our beach volleyball league!
I am pleased to report that my Robotics Club’s spooky animatronics functioned purrfecty for the Halloween attractions. Otherwise, it has been my mewsual yoga, kyudo, and belly dance classes.
My charters have caught the bumpurr crop of thegroupurrs, snappurrs, mackerels, tunas & croakers, I have been volunteering at the food bank, and purrcussing with my drumming circle, nya!
Aside from caring for the yacht, my cats and – and pony, I have been dancing, volunteering, photographing, Halloween face painting, and – and I had so much fun with our Trick R Eating, nya!
Aside from our Halloween cosplay I have been assisting at belly dance class, surfing, board shaping, working at the stable, and I watched the Supergirl Pro 2017 women’s surfing tournament!
Our group had the wonderful time cosplaying as Studio Ghibli Girls at the Halloween nights cosplay purrowl, and speaking of the tournyaments, my dojo is purrparing for the Winter Regionals!
Hai, our entire family was here for the cosplay purrowl, so it has been the extra special time! Since then, my Magick Shop’s clerks and I have begun to purrpare for the Winter Solstice festivities!
When Lizzy, and I have not been pampurring the customers at our spa, we tended to our garden, have attended the festivities, the mewsual late night hot salsa dance and watched the DVDs!
We have been watching Stranger Things, and there are lotsa movies that we hope to see. Otherwise, when she is on the golf course, I am running with my Purrkour Club! Howboutchoo, Mike?
I didn’t do much for Halloween this year, but I’ve been reading, writing, drawing, gaming, and spending time with family and friends! Well, we’ve got a lot on our plate, so lets jump right into
the lightning round topic: our favorite fun stuff of 1917!
Ah, this year we’ve been looking back at favorite things of prior years ending in a “7”. You know- 2007, 1997, ’87, ’77 etc. Um, things like movies, , books, music, art, etc. and now we’ve worked our way back to 1917! Petra’s gonna start, so, are y’all ready to “conduct the lightning”?
The Ladies of The Mew:
HAI! LIGHTNING ROUND GO, NYA!
I will nominate the masterpieces such as Henri Matisse’s The Painter and his Model, John William Waterhouse’s Fair Rosamund, and Isidore Konti’s Nymph and Fawn, nya! (tags Bun with a brush of the tail)
George Herriman’s Krazy Kat comic strip had been running for 4 years by then… and some of my favorite artists were born in 1917, such as Andrew Wyeth, Dik Brown and Jack “The King” Kirby! (tags Nyoka)
I will nominate Elsie Wright and and Frances Griffith’s photographs of The Cottingley Fairies! Lizzy’s turn! (tags Elizabeth)
I am not sure if I have seen any movies from that year, but I might have seen some of the comedies of that era by Charlie Chaplain, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd! (tail tags her wife)
Many great actors were born in 1917, such as Desi Arnaz, Ernest Borgnine, Raymond Burr, Ossie Davis, Phyllis Diller, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Lena Horne, Lash LaRue, Dean Martin, Robert Mitchum and Meg Wyllie! (tags Mary Nyan)
Speaking of Desi, Dean and Lena, other great mewsicians born in that year included Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonius Monk, Buddy Rich and Jo Stafford! (tags Trini-chan)
Some of my favorite authors were born that year, such as Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Bloch, Gwendolyn Brooks, Anthony Burgess and Sidney Sheldon! (tags Tara-chan)
I want… I want to nominate Edgar Rice Burroughs’s A Princess of Mars, and- and Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne’s House of Dreams, nya! Nya-sensei’s turn, nya! (tags Nyanko)
I think that the White Sox defeated the Giants to win the World Series that year, but I am vague about the sports records that are far back and during World War One.(tags Yvonne)
Some legendary ships were launched that year, such as the U.S.S. New Mexico BB-40 , U.S.S. Mississippi BB-41, and the U.S.S. Idaho BB-42, nya! (tags Jeannie)
I will nominate the beautiful aircraft that first flew that year, such as the Sopwith Camel, Sopwith Dolphin, and SPAD S.XIII. (tags Nyanko)
I think that the White Sox defeated the Giants to win the World Series that year, but I am vague about the sports records that are far back and during World War One. Back to Mike!
You know, some of those folks were involved with Star Trek (The Original Series)! Um, with his wife Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz co-owned DesiLu Studios where the show was produced; Meg Wyllie portrayed the leader of the planet Talos IV in the pilot episode “The Cage”, and Robert Bloch – one of my favorite authors- wrote three episodes: “What Are Little Girls Made of?”, “Catspaw”, and “Wolf in the Fold”! Yep! Well, ah, that was another fun and expedient little Lightning Round, but we’ve got a lot on our plate today, so I’ll turn The Mew over to Bun, who will present this month’s
Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!
Hai! In this monthly portion of The Mew, we “commeowmorate” famous catgirls of myths and popular culture, from anthropormorphic feline females, ailuranthropic shape – shifters, and nekomimi who are genuinely part cat, to those who might not have any actual kitty DNA, but do have the cat-titude and / or style. This month we will shine the spotlight on more “honorary catgirls” of radio, TV, mewsic, movies and video games!
Firstly I will mention Serena Brook who is an actress, singer and voiceover artist from Minnesota! She is a cast member of A Prairie Home Companion, which is a wonderfully fun radio show with great mewsic, comedy and tales! In the January 7th 2017 show, she was in a skit with Chris Thile, Tim Russell and Fred Newman in which she cutely meowed while discussing her mouse drawer and her new year’s resolutions!
We have two reasons to shine the spotlight on Madonna! in her “Express Yourself” (concept version) music video from her 1989 Like a Prayer album, she crawls like a cat to the saucer of milk until her boyfriend arrives with a black cat! Then in her “Don’t Tell Me” music video from her 2000 Music album, she is the dancing cowgirl (as in country / western, not a bovine kemonomimi) in the bare midriffed outfit with the furry tail!
We were not sure if it was a cat, raccoon or other type of tail, but we are fond of the fashion! Speaking of the music video girls with tails, I would also like to mention the late David Bowie’s 2016 “Black Star” music video, in which a mysterious girl with a tail picks up an astronaut skull and takes it to a ritual ceremony. We were also not sure if she is a cat girl or perhaps another species, but it is a very pretty tail nevertheless!
Sarah Dunsworth portrays Sarah the beautician in the Canadian TV series Trailer Park Boys! It is the comedic mockumentary about the relationships, vices, schemes and mischief amongst the residents of the Sunnyvale Trailer Park. There are occasional feline plots and motifs, such as the stray cats adopted by a resident named Bubbles, a mountain lion named Steve, and Sarah’s lovely leopard & cheetah purrint attire!
We have previously mentioned the leopard print couture of Gloria Pritchard (Sofia Vergara) and the Halloween catgirl costume of her step grand daughter Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland) in the Modern Family TV series, and it’s 8th season gave us three more honorary catgirls! In the episode “All Things Being Equal”, Gabrielle Elyse portrays Gloria’s son Manny’s classmate Danielle Pardo who wears the Pink cat ears to the womens’ equality march!
Lots of the marchers wear Pink Pussy Hats! In the episode “Alone Time”, Cece Paige portrays Manny’s study partner Sierra, who wears one of Gloria’s tiger stripe dresses! In the season finale episode “The Graduates”, not only does Haley’s mom Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) playfully pounces and growl like the momma tigress in the Gym Town’s ball pit, but she arrives there in the Rolls Royce with the tiger stripe & snow leopard print upholstery!
Speaking of the feline fashion motif, Jacqueline Nelson once wore the cute kuroneko (Black Cat) shirt for Halloween into the scary fun Dracula Untold maze at the Universal Studios park! She is the assistant to executive purrducer Andy Lassner of The Ellen DeGeneres talk show, which is one of our favoritest talk shows, and Ellen is such the wonderful hostess, comedian and actress who likes to scare her friends and dance!
Rihanna is another musician that we admire, and she portrayed the bittersweetly sexy alien girl named Bubble in the science fiction movie Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets, which we reviewed in our August 2017 Mew! I do not think that Bubble is related to Bubbles the Trailer Park Boy. She is a shape – shifting performing artist who Valerian meets in a nightclub, and one of her guises is a pole – dancing catgirl!
Cary Deuber is a cast member of The Real Housewives of Dallas, a reality TV series! It is one of the Real Housewives series, including the ones set in Orange County (California), Atlanta and New York City. The Dallas cast also includes Stephanie, LeeAnne, Brandi, D’Andra, Kameron and their families. In a 2nd season episode there was a Halloween costume party, to which Cary was the tigress wearing just the body paint!
Serval is an anthropomorphic Serval girl in the Kemono Friends anime, manga and video games created by artist Mine Yoshizaki! Voiced by Yuka Ozaki, Serval is adorably cute with lovely spots, striped tail, he long supple ears and short honey Blonde hair with the “M” mark! She is a peppy resident of Japari Park who has fun adventures with her friends Kaban, Fennec, Racoon, Ezo, Lucky Beast and Nana the park’s caretaker!
Lastly but not leastly I wish to mention the feline femme fatales of Disgaea 5, which is a Japanese tactical fantasy RPG in the Disgaea video game series! The Kit-Cat, a.k.a Felynn, are demon cat girls which include the Bastet, Nekomata, Cait Sith, Were-cat, Tail Ring and Elbacky breeds! They are sexy ‘n sweet with large eyes, ears, cute tail ‘n paws, but those kitties have claws and the fierce martial arts prowess! That is all for this month’s spotlight, and now here is Myayr to begin
TV, DVD and movie mewsings with
her review of Blade Runner 2049!
Hai! 1982 was such the impurressive year for science fiction, fantasy and horror films such as Star Trek II, E.T., Poltergeist, Tron, Conan, The Road Warrior, Quest for Fire, The Dark Crystal, The Last Unicorn, The Secret of NIMH, remakes of The Thing and Cat People… and in that amazing midst was purrhaps the poster child for the cyber punk genre, Blade Runner!
Based upon the story by author Philip K. Dick, and directed by Ridley Scott, Blade Runner starred Harrison Ford as Detective Rick Deckard, the “Blade Runner” who hunted the rogue artificially created people called Replicants, who rebelled against their human creators and executioners in the darkly foreboding, retro-fitted spurrawl of Los Angeles in the year 2019.
The great cast also included Rutger Haur, Daryl Hannah, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, William Sanderson, Brion James and James Hong, with the beautiful FX supurrvised by Douglas Trumbull, supurrb designs by Syd Mead and brilliant mewsic by Vangelis! 2017 has been the purrimo year for many genre films too, including the longly – awaited Blade Runner 2049 !
Set 30 years later, the longly – awaited sequel was directed by Denis Villeneuve whose movie Arrival was one of our favorites of last year! It has mewsic by Han Zimmer, and stars Ryan Gosling as a, L.A.P.D. Blade Runner named K, Robin Wright as his supurrvisor Lt. Joshi, Ana de Armas as K’s holographic girlfriend Joi, Carla Juri as the designer Dr. Stelline…
… Jared Leto as Wallace the evil owner of the corpurration that creates the Replicants, Sylvia Hoeks as his tough assistant Luv, Dave Bautista as a farmer named Morton, and the return of Harrison Ford as Deckard! We loved Robin Wright in Wonder Woman and Dave Bautista in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2! There are other great actors, but I do not wish to spoil certain surpurrises!
Of the plot, I will just say that K discovers a mystery and a conspurracy whilst hunting Replicants, and hoping to find the missing Deckard for some answers! I will not divulge much more of the plot, which I thought was was very intriguing and complex, although there were a few purrdictable bits, but the performances are terrific and the characters are quite captivating!
The movie was serious and at the good pace, not silly or rushed, with none of the annoying cinematic techniques that I dislike, such as snap zooms, speed ramping, or unstable camera! I think that the designs, FX, sets, locations, cinematography and sounds are amazing, although at times I thought that the mewsic was too loudly jarring, especially during certain Spinner scenes.
The movie’s sense of world – building and mythology is quite fantastic, although it is mainly limited to parts of Southern California and Las Vegas, and I hoped to find out more of of the world & history. I wondered if there would be any references to the Soldier movie that starred Kurt Russell that seemed to have the Blade Runner connection, but I did not notice any references.
There is action aplenty with chases, shootouts and fights which were very visceral, although one purrticular brawl inside a car was purrhaps anticlimactic. I will certainly not disclose the ending, but I was pleased with it, although I had the tough time in trying to read the end credits which rolled too briskly for me, especially when some cattygories have several columns and rows of names!
However we were happy to see Syd Mead’s name in those credits! Mike has met him the few times! It might be too soon to tell if Blade Runner 2049 will be as significant as its purredecessor, but in spite of the few widdle quibbles, think that it was a good movie, a worthy sequel, and definitely worth seeing on the big screen! Nextly I would like to say the few words about
Blade Runner: Blackout 2022!
We do get a bit of the back story in the 15 min. online Japanese anime short set between the two Blade Runner movies. It purrtains to about the rise of racism towards replicants and the disastrous blackout that is mentioned in 2049. It was written & directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, whose impurressive credits include Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.
I did not care for the starkly heterogeneous mix of styles / techniques such as the cell – shaded art, CG, what appurrs to be rotoscoping and ink-wash, the latter which reminds me of the Scott Free Productions’s animated logo. The somber look and tone reminded me of other Japanese anime based on American properties, such as The Animatrix, Batman: Gotham Knight…
… and Marvel anime (e.g. X-Men Wolverine, Iron Man, The Punisher). I thought the voices were the bit too deadpan; however, I did like the poor replicant named Trixie who is tough, agile, sad, sympathetic, and reminds me the bit of Priss from Blade Runner. That is all for my review, and Nyow here is Lizzy to discuss another animated purrduction–
Batman vs. Two-Face!
Arigato! We have greatly enjoyed many of the animated DCU TV series, shorts and movies such as Batman: The Animated Adventures, Superman: The Animated Series, Static Shock, Justice League Unlimited, Gotham Girls, Batman Beyond, The Brave and the Bold, Teen Titans, Young Justice, and DC Supur Hero Girls! For our review of Batman and Harley Quinn, please see our September 2017 Mew!
We were especially eager to see Batman vs.Two-Face, which is the second such OAV based upon the classic live-action 1966 Batman TV series! For our review of Batman: Return of the Caped Crusader, please see our December 2016 Mew! Both of the which reunite Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar as Batman, Robin and Cat Woman. This was the final purrformance of the late Adam West.
The PG rated, 72 minute movie also stars William Shatner as Harvet Dent / Two-Face, and Lee Meriwether as attorney Lucilee Diamond! Animated by Warner Bros. Animation, it was written by purrducers Michael Jelenic & James Ticker, directed by Rick Morales, edited by Christopher D. Lozinski, scored by Michael McCuiston, Kristopher Carter & Lolita Ritmanis, with the casting & voice direction by Wes Gleason!
The executive purrducers were Sam Register, Michael Uslan, Benjamin Melniker and the line purrducer was Amy McKenna. Also appurrring are The Joker, Riddler, King Tut, The Bookworm, Dr. Harleen Quizel, Dr. (Hugo) Strange, Alfred, Aunt Harriet, Commissioner Gordon, Chief O’Hara, Mr. Freeze, Shame, Clock King, Cat Woman’s cat Hecate, the Batmobile, Bat Cycle, Bat Plane, Wayne Manor & the Bat Cave!
Nyow for the widdle taste of the plot! Bruce Wayne / Batman has hopes for happier, healthier days when his friend Harvey might be cured of his physical & emotional scars, whilst Hugo & Harleen unveil the expurrimental device to extract evil from folks. Unfortunately both remedies fail, and many united villains pose a vast threat to Gotham City in this thrilling, amewsing, poignant homage to the 1966 Batman TV series!
Like many of the animated DCU tales, it did seem the bit short, but I thought that the story, designs, animation, voices, sounds, music & editing are great, with the good balance of action, humor, drama & surpurrises with gadgets, death traps, thugs, and bat – fights aplenty! The DVD’s language choices are English & french with the optional English, French & Chinese subtitles.
It has the few purreview trailers but no special features. Thusly, it is sparser compurred to the Blu-Ray edition, which has several special features, including the tributes to Adam & Burt! I will give Batman vs Two Face the two paws up, and I will heartily recommend this movie to fans of this great cast, the animated DCU and the 1966 Batman! Nyow here is Trini-chan to discuss
My Little Pony: The Movie!
Hai! We are big fans of the My Little Pony animations, comics, novels, games, toys and collectibles! There is much new merchandise for the new theatrical pony movie which we have been especially eagerly awaiting! For our review of the The Art of My Little Pony: The Movie book, please see the September 2017 Mew!
Of course, My Little Pony movies are not new, as there was the first one in 1986, those comprising the Classic Movie Collection DVD, and the four Equestria Girls movies! In the new movie, after Equestria’s Friendship Festival is attacked by villains in airships The heroic ‘mane six” ponies and Spike the dragon escape in search of allies.
Their journey takes them to a desert town, an airship, a deserted mountaintop, Seaquestria and an island. It is the stressful time, but it is fill of delightful songs! The music by Daniel Ingram who has composed the music & songs for those prior pony productions. We have eagerly purchased the movie’s soundtrack CD!
The great voice cast includes Tara Strong as Twilight Sparkle, Ashleigh Ball as Rainbow Dash and Applejack, Andrea Libman as Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy, Tabitha St. Germain as Rarity and Princess Luna, Cathy Weseluck as Spike, Nicole Oliver as Princess Celestia and Britt McKillip as Princess Cadance!
The singing voices also include Shannon Chan-Kent as Pinkie Pie, Rebecca Shoichot as Twilight Sparkle, and Kazumi Evans as Rarity! They are joined by Emily Blunt as the adversarial unicorn Tempest Shadow, Michael Pena as her assistant hedgehog Grubber, Liev Schreiber as the evil Storm King…
… Uzo Aduba as Queen Novo of the hippogriff sea ponies, Kristen Chenoweth as her daughter Princess Skystar, Taye Diggs as Capper the charismatic con artist cat, Zoe Saldana as the parrot pirate Captain Celaeno, and Sia as Songbird Serenade the pop star pegasus! There are many other characters, including the dozens of background characters to identify!
The movie was directed by Jason Thiessen who has supervisingly directed the TV series! The story is by Meghan McCarthy & Joe Ballarini with the screenplay by Rita Hsiao, Michael Vogel & Meghan. She has been the pony writer, story editor, co- executive producer, vice president and head of storytelling at Hasbro!
The character designs have been slightly modified, and Equestra has never looked so grandly! There are many spectacular scenes, filled with many characters especially during the festivals. The character and FX animation, the lighting and shading are more than 20% cooler, and Rainbow Dash’s sonic rainboom effect is quite powerfully magnificent!
Sequestria is especially beautiful and I hope we will see more of the hippogriff / sea ponies! The movie seemed the bit short and very brisk, but the voices and music are exquisite, and the humor is quite funny be it in the jokes. snappy banter, expressions, sound FX or physical comedy, but there are plenty of sad, poignant, joyful, cute and thrilling moments too!
I will give this pony movie the “A ” as in Applebuck! I have the soundtrack CD too, although it is just the songs, except for the ponies’ cover of “We Got the Beat”, and it does not have the score. However, I think the songs are wonderful, and the harmonizing of the ponies is quite the joyful peppy sound! Of course, the elements of harmony are their business!
Speaking of cute, the movie was preceded by the fun Hana Zuki animated short! For more about Tempest, Capper, Grubber, The Storm King, Celaeno & other pirates, I will recommend the 4 issues of the prequel comic book mini-series! Speaking of the pony comics, now we will continue the the pony reports, as Tara-chan discusses
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #59!
Arigato, nya! Gosh, I cannot believe that the pony comics have already been around for more than the five years, nya! Issue #59 is purriced at $3.99 and – and it has the uninterrupted 20 page tale followed by the 8 pages of the ads, nya. I am glad that the tale is not interrupted by the ads, and – and I wish that all comic books were published that way, nya!
The tale was written by Christina Rice, illustrated by Agnes Garbowska, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Bobby Curnow and – and published by Ted Adams, nya! We have met Ted at some of the conventions, nya! It is available in the choice of cover A by Agnes, cover B by Sara Richard and – and the retailer incentive cover by Tony Kuusisto, nya!
It is the tough decision, nya! Nyow for the tatse of the plot, which stars Pinkie Pie and- and Rainbow Dash, with the brief apurrance by AppleJack, Twlight Sparkle Granny Smith, The Cake family, and – and several other ponies, nya! Pinkie Pie is very distraught that Rainbow Dash does not like to eat pie, and obsesses upon finding a flavor that will change her mind, nya!
Rainbow Dash reluctantly agrees to the extensive taste test, but Pinkie Pie is rather relentless. In the fair trade, Pinkie Pie agrees to spend the time in purrsuing Rainbow Dash’s purrfurred hobbies such as the flying, chillaxing, and – and reading the Daring Do adventure novels, but Pinkie Pie does not have the extent of interest, and thusly learns the impurrtant lesson, nya!
However, I had the great time watching the flying, reading, chillaxing, the discussions and the eating, I am purrticularly fond of Agnes’s cute art, the pony poses and – and expurressions are supurrb, whilst Heather’s colors are so beautifully richly vibrant, nya The lettering has the great fonts, and – and it is fun to try to identify the background characters too, nya!
Some of my favorite parts were the outdoor lounge chair scene, the flying scene, Twilight in the library, Pinkie Pie in the the Lab coat, and – and the impurressive full – page pic of the many pies stacked in front of Sugar Cube Corner, but nyow I have the cravings in my tummy, nya! I had better change the topic by purroceeding into my review of
My Little Pony: Legends of Magic #6, nya!
In this series, The Purrincesses’ scholarly friend Sunburst researches the history of Equestria, especially from the books by their sensei Starswirl! In each issue we learn of a famous historical pony, and – and this time Sunburst reads more about Mage Meadowbrook the healer earth pony, who appurred in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #58, nya!
Followed by the 8 pages of ads, the 20 page tale was written by Jeremy Whitley illustrated by Brenda Hickey, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil edited by Bobby and – and published by Ted Adams, nya! It is available in the choice of 3 covers: cover A by Brenda, cover B by Zachary Sterling and – and the retailer incentive cover by Abigail Starling, nya!
We have met Jeremy and – and Brenda at some comic book conventions too, nya! Jeremy is the creator of the Princeless and – and Princeless: Raven the Pirate Princess comics, nya! He also wrote The Unstoppable Wasp series which was recently cancelled, nya. Meadowbrook traveled with her wagon to different towns where she cured sick ponies, nya!
She is smart, brave, agile, observant and – and compassionate, nya. On the nippy, dark, and – and stormy night she looks for a warm dry place to stay in the town of Mareidian where she also hopes to restock her supplies, but the inn is full of infectious zombie ponies, nya! After the chase, she cleverly escapes to a secure barn to ponder the cause and- and the cure of the epurrdemic, nya!
Meadowbrook is such a vivacious pony and it was delightful to see her heal those poor victims, nya! I hope to see more of her and – and her descendant Cat Tail too, nya! Twlight Sparkle briefly appurrs in this issue, whilst seeing Sunburst off on the train from Canterlot to the Crystal Empire, where Twilight Sparkle’s cute widdle alicorn niece Flurry Heart was recently born, nya!
This was such the fun, charming tale about the heroic, smart character who I hope to see more of, nya! The plot unfoalded at the purrfect pace with the sparkling dialogue, with the beautifully illustrated characters, scenery, FX and – and fonts, so I will give both of those pony comics the high purraise, nya! That will conclude our pony reports, but nyow here is Becca with
comic book and – and manga mewsings
with her review of Hero Cats #19, nya!
Hai! The Hero Cats are among the purrotectors of their town of Stellar City, and the team is compurrised of Midnight the Black cat, Ace the White cat, Belle the Siamese cat, Roco the Gray cat, Rocket the Tabby, Cassiopeia the Orange & White cat! Cassiopeia has a brother named Bandit the tuxedo cat, who has been away on a sepurrate mission to the SkyWorld with his robot friend!
Cassiopeia’s owners Galaxy Man and Cosmic Girl are human supurr heroes, but they are unaware of the cats’ adventures! At the 2014 Heroes Convention in Charlotte, we got a sketch of Cassiopeia http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest3/6.html by Marcus Williams! The series was created by author Kyle Puttkammer, who we have met at several conventions on the mainland!
We first met them at the Heroes Convention in June 2013, when Hero Cats #0 debuted, which was published then by Galactic Quest, who also pulished the Galaxy Man and Cosmic Girl comics. Since then it has been published by Action Lab, the creative team has grown, there have been two Midnight mini-series, the Halloween Comics Fest Special, art purrints and kitty hats!
issue #19 is purriced at $3.99 and has the uninterrupted 24 page tale of “Mystery on the Mountain” followed by the 8 bonus pages! Rated “E” for everyone, it was created & written by Kyle Puttkammer, pencilled by Andy Duggan, inked by Brandon Page, colored by Sigi Ironmonger, and lettered by George Gant! We have met several of those folks at the conventions!
Ypu know, at the 2014 Heroes Convention we got a lovely sketch of Cassiopeia http://catgirlisland.net/art/guest3/6.html by Marcus Williams who was the comics’ purrior artist! Anyway, the tale begins with the impurressive full – page pics of the cats fighting the snow beast! After the big brawl they find a mysterious, purretty crystal, which Rocket hopes will power his own UFO!
That does not work, so they take the crystal to their friend Eastly in the subterranean Stone City, which the cats recently defended against a villain and his dinosaur gang in the 2nd Midnight mini – series! We learn more about the history & legends of Stone City, when Eastly leads the cats upon the expurrdition to find the fabled critter known as the Jemlin!
Also appurring are Robot who has returned from SkyWorld, and Galaxy Man who defends Stellar City from another monster! We hope that he will soon find his missing astronaut wife! I am curious as to what Bandit is up to with the Skyworld cats such as Sapphire, Madalyn, Newton and Lancelot! The art is so purretty with the great poses, expurressions, critters, FX and landscapes!
The neat bonuses include another full – page pic, the purreview of the next issue, Andy’s cordial message, lovely sketches by Abby Hermes, and photos of the real cats Ace, Bandit, Tim, Baby, Swirl, Rhudy and Pollux lounging with their comic books! This was such the delightfully thrilling, amewsing, informative and joyful issue which I will give very high purraise! Nyow here is Vonny to discuss
The Hunters of Salamanstra #6!
Arigato, nya! The Hunters of Salamanstra http://salamanstra.keenspot.com began in 2014 as a manga – style web comic by creator / artist / writer John Joseco, editor Memj & assistant editor Calpain, nya! The tale purrtains to Kessah Orlianne, a feisty 19 year old swordswoman of the Canae species with the lovely ears, tail, petite fangs and Lavender hair, nya!
She becomes a purrofessional monster huntress after the death of her older sister Dianna, the legendary monster hunter known as The White Wolf, who appurrs in flashbacks, visions and dreams, nya. Published by Keenspot, the Black & White comic book is written & drawn by John, edited by Jennifer McGregor & Calpain, with the cover illustrations color by Bernie Joseco, nya.
The bittersweet tale ranges from cute, peppy, charming & heroic to sad, scary, violent & gory, nya. Issue #0 chronicled Dianna’s demise and her cyborg purrrtner Adrien’s journey to meet Kessah; in issue #1 Adrien told Kessah about Dianna, and her home was destroyed in a fight with an assassin; in issue #2, they travelled to an airship to the hunters guild that Kessah wants to join, nya.
In issue #3 they escaped from the airship which was destroyed by a huge monster; and in issue #4, Kessah & Adrien’s escape pod crash landed in the wasteland populated by monsters & enemies. nya. Adrien told Kessah the tale of how he lost his arm and his purrtner Kary, nya. He was rescued by Dianna who became his new purrtner after his arm was bionically replaced, nya.
In issue #5 Adrien & Kessah escaped the monstrous rocky wasteland & rescue petite, cute, feisty medic Asharia Kenzie, but encountered more enemy guild men, including their boss Fane Vermilion,
a notorious hunter who is of the Canae species like the Orlianne sisters, nya! That brings us to #6 which is purriced at $4.99 and has the uninterrupted Black & White 38 page chapter, nya!
Adrien, Kessah & Asharia are rescued by Nassa the pilot to takes them to their guild’s huge mountainous headquarters Gehenna, which is the big vast place with alluring art works and high ceilings, nya! It is bustling with people of diverse species, including kemonomimi of various breeds, nya! Kessah meets other guild members such as Sienna, Akina, Janice, and their voluptuous leader Ariel, nya!
It is the emotional roller coaster for Kessah, between her excitement to see such the place, her genki determination to continue her sister’s legacy, her delight in the comfy of the hot bath and the soft bed, the poignant moments at the memorial shrine to Dianna, and the very mixed reactions to her from the crowds, nya. Some folks are glad to meet her and some are not, nya.
The captivating plot has great dialogue, mythology and world – building, with beautiful character, mecha, creature & scenic art with nice graphic FX & typography! The characters are wonderfully expurressive, and the tale unfolds at the purrfect pace across the interesting compurrsitions of the pages, including the two-page spurread as they appurroach Gehenna, nya!
The sexy costumes, brief semi – nudity, and the wee bit of purrofanity might not be for the widdle kitties, though, nya! The issue also has 2 pages of ads and 2 different covers to choose from, nya. We are cheering for Kessah, Adrien & Asharia’s success whilst we look forward to the next issue! That is all for my comic book report, so nyow I will turn The Mew over to Mike for his review of
Elfquest: The Final Quest #22, nya!
Thanks Vonny! Ah, well, we’re big fans of Wendy and Richard Pini’s Elfquest, and Wendy’s other beautiful works of art! Since it started in 1978, there have been many Elfquest series, spin-offs, graphic novels, portolios, calendars, prose works, games, figurines, shirts, fanzines and other items. For our review of the Wendy Pini: The Line of Beauty art book, please see our August 2017 Mew!
Published bimonthly by Dark Horse. the Final Quest series has brought many changes to the World of Two Moons, with births, deaths, reunions, partings, romance, metaphysical changes, startling revelations, and tough choices for the various elf, human, and troll societies during a time of war, while some of the elves wish to leave the planet and explore the stars, but others wish to stay.
Issue #22 might technically be the 23rd issue, if you include the precursory 2013 Special It was written by Wendy & Richard, scripted & illustrated by Wendy, colored by Sonny Strait, lettered by Nate Piekos, edited by Spencer Cushing and assistant editor Kevin Burkhalter, with the issue’s graphic design by Sarah Terry and digital artistry by Allyson Haller.
It’s priced $3.99 and includes the uninterrupted 28 page story, which seems to offer one last whirlwind tour of the various tribal locations on the eve of the crystal palace starship’s launch! Khorbasi, Tingeh, Molli, Urglan and others of the The High Winds tribe welcome visitors, whilst Brill, Krill, Korafay, Reef and Puffer of the Wavedancer tribe are less hospitable to the crew of an enemy ship!
Salt, Spray, Dre-Ahn and his pony are traveling to the palace, where Old Maggoty and other troll folk have already arrived, as many friends mingle before going separate ways. That includes Cutter, Leetah, Skywise, Nightfall, Redlance, Ember, Tier, Sunstream, Windkin, Savah, Ahdri, Shenshen, Treestump, Clearbrook, Dewshine, Tyleet, Pike, Scouter, Timmain, Yun…
… Suntoucher, Toorah, Aroree, Door, Mirff. Harotim. the pixy-ish Preserver entities, and a pack of wolf friends too! It’s a very big cast of characters spanning several generations! It’s a joyful occasion for Ekuar and his best friend Rayek, whose daughter Venka has given birth to Satreeka, but things have taken a tragic turn for the family of Moonshade, Strongbow, Freetouch, Dart and Mender.
I don’t think it could be a more surprising, poignant, bittersweet issue, between the profound plot and character developments, and the stunningly beautiful character, fashion, FX and scenic art! Man, it’s hard to believe that after all these years, the quest almost over, and the final issue is due in January! Ah, well, now for more reviews of Dark Horse, comics, here’s Nya-sensei to tell us about
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 11 #11 & 12!
Hai! We loved the Buffy and Angel TV shows! You know, this year is the 25th anniversary of the original Buffy movie, and the 20th anniversary of the TV series! We think that the crew at Dark Horse Comics has been doing the supurrbly faithful job of canonically continuing the series into the comic book medium for the past 10 years!
Thus far in season 11, after a dragon destroyed much of San Francisco, the oppurressive government declared the martial law, diminished the civil rights of magickal beings and imprisoned them internment camps. That included Buffy, Spike, Willow & her coven friends, where a secret machine sucked out the inmates’ magick energy.
Buffy & Willow’s powers were tempurrarily drained, but Faith helped them to strike back, free the other purrisoners, regain their magickal energy, and begin to thwart of the tyrannical schemes! Buffy, Willow, Faith & Spike infiltrate the facility, where people & animals were cruelly transformed into magickal / biological / cybernetic weapons.
After retrieving valuable information, they regrouped with Dawn and Xander, who magickally impurrsonted the Vice Purresident while the others interrogated the real Veep, in order to find out how to stop the pending global phase of the sinister purroject! That brings us up to issue #11 which is the next to last issue of season 11!
Issue #11 is purriced at $3.99, and it’s 28 pages include the 22 page tale plus 6 pages of ads. Executively purrduced by Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon, the 11th chapter of season 11 was scripted by Christos Gage, illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, colored by Dan Jackson, lettered by Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt.
It was edited by Freddye Miller, and assistantly edited by Kevin Baurkhalter. The issue’s graphic designer was Anita Magana, and the digital art technician was Christianne Goudreau. The main cover is by Steve Morris, and the variant cover is by Rebekah, Dan, Christos and Comicraft! We have met Christos at a few conventions!
Buffy, Willow, Faith, Spike, Dawn & Xander infiltrate another secret government base, where they finally confront the government’s purress secretary Joanna Wise, who is the evil mastermind behind the criminal purroject. Almost the entire chapter is the thrilling big bad boss battle whilst the dragon returns to attack the city again!
Issue #12 is purriced at $3.99, it has the same credits, and it’s 28 pages include the 22 page tale plus 4 pages of ads and the 2 pages of comments by Freddye and the readers! The variant cover reveals that Harmony and Clem have been living grandly in Paris, and are pampurred by masseurs when they learn of the battle!
The battle continues to rage in the first half of the issue, whilst the aftermath is the focus of the second half, but I should not spoil too much of the finale plot! However, I will reveal the one tidbit that Giles returns, and that his own side-story will be published in February 2018, so I am eagerly anticipating that!
The characters’ purrtraiture, poses and fashions amidst the scenery, FX and fonts are great, and purrticularly like the very luminous colors for the magickal FX! I can purractically “hear” the actors saying the dialogue! The tale had the good balance of the humor, drama, action and developments at the good pace that excitingly builds towards the finale!
As mewsual the comments by the readers and the editor are fascinating to read, and I am curious what the other fans think of the finale! I was very pleased with it, so I will give those Buffy comics the grade of an “A” as in Angel and my hopes for a 12th season! I am done, and nyow here is sis to tell us about
Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro vol. 6!
Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro is another favorite manga of ours! It is written & drawn by Satoko Kiyuduki who is also the manga-ka of G.A.: Geijutsuka Art Class! They are very different, as G.A is the peppy, cheerfully slice-of life tale of the young art students, whereas Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro is the darker, ethereally bittersweet supurrnatural tale.
Originally published as Hitsuki Katsuki no Kuro – Kaichu Tabinowa in Japan in 2004 by Houbunsha, Shoulder – A – Coffin Kuro is published here in English by Yen Press, who publishes many manga titles that we like, such as Girls’ Last Tour, Today’s Cerberus, Spice & Wolf, Omamori Himari, Sunshine Sketch, Ichiroh, School-Live, K-On, and G.A.!
Volume 1 was published here in May of 2008, so it has been the while betwixt volumes, but it is worth the wait! Volume 6 is the next – to – last volume, translated by Sheldon Drzka and lettered by Lys Blakeslee. it is priced $17.00 in the USA and $22.00 Canada, and it has 128 pages of mostly the Black & White manga with 14 color pages.
It is rated “T” for the teen readers due to the language & violence. The mane character is Kuro, a gothy tomboy girl in who travels with a coffin and a widdle talking bat named Sen, They rescued two cute widdle abandoned, shape – shifting twin catgirl gynoid sisters Sanju & Nijuku, who we purrofiled our February 2012 Catgirl Spotlight!
Sadly Kuro is afflicted with a deadly chronic curse that will eventually rot her away, hence the coffins she carries due to that purrognosis. She is in search of the witch who caused the curse in hopes of a cure, but has been the surreal quest through visions, dreams, hallucinations and fragmented memories amidst the towns, ruins & wilderness.
There have been flashbacks to Kuro’s early days, and mysterious encounters with other folks, several of whom suffer from various maladies. In spite of the heartbreakingly sad situations of the poignant adventure, it is Kuro’s relentless purrseverance combined with the twins’ playfully innocent naivety that counterpoint the dark situations.
Nyow for the taste of the volume 6 plot, but I will try to not spoil it too much! It is the very surreal and non – linear tale with some familiar and new faces. as they team up with a photo journalist to meet a sad ghost girl in a mansion, ride in Count Rittook’s submarine towards a very misty spooky continent, and see several flashbacks to the past!
The flashbacks give more insights into the origins of Sen, Kuro, Hifumi the witch that she seeks, the plague, Sanju, Nijuku and the purrofessor who created them, with the brief appurrance by Fukashigi the occasionally recurring canine traveler, and the introduction of a significant school girl named Annabelle.
The plot and the imagery are quite beautiful, poignant and enlightening, peppurred by several exquisite full – page pics, bittersweetly charming moments and tearfully tragic moments, but I should not expose any surpurrises as the epic journey nears the end!
It will be the very longly – awaited finale, and I am purraying for Kuro, Sen, Sanju and Nijuku’s healthy happiness together! That is all for our comics & manga mewsings, so nyow here is Jennyjen to begin the collectibles & toy talk, with her review of the
the Star Wars: The Black Series
action figure #52: General Leia Organa!
Hai. It has been the dark time for Leia and The Resistance, what with the murder of Han Solo, the evil of their son Ben A.K.A. Kylo Ren, the worlds that have been oppurressed or destroyed by The First Order, and the disappurrance of Leia’s brother Luke Skywalker. It has also been the sad time for us fans, with the passing of not only actress Carrie Fisher, but her mom Debbie Reynolds as well.
However, many of us are looking forward to the return of Luke and Leia in the pending new Star Wars movie The Last Jedi, which hits theaters in December. Of course, with the new Star Wars movie comes much new merchandise, and we had the fun time queueing up with other fans at purrticipating stores back on September 1st for the “Force Friday” release of the initial wave of Last Jedi items.
For our review of Hasbro’s Star Wars: The Black Series action figure #42: Hera Syndulla, please see last month’s Mew; and nyow I would like to say the few words of purraise for the new figure of Hera’s fellow rebel heroine Leia. Before I took her out of the box, I was impurressed by how nicely designed, sculpted and painted the figure is, with the very faithful purrportions, purrtraiture and detail.
The 1/12th scale figure stands 5.25″ tall (including .1/4″ boot heels), which seems accurate given that Leia was 5 ft. 1 in. tall. She is wearing the Light Blue-Gray jumpsuit with the Black belt, Brown boots & Dark Brown vest accessorized by the blaster pistol. The details are quite intricate, from her coiffure, cheekbones & rolled-up sleeves, to the ring on her right hand, the fabric folds and various buckles.
She is well-balanced to stand without requiring a display base (which is not included) and very posable with the cleverly concealed points of articulation in her neck, abs, hip, shoulders, elbows, wrists, thighs, knees & ankles. She is a fine addition to our collection, and has a nice spot on the shelf next to the figures of Hera, Sabine, Ahsoka, Rey & Jen, with hopes for a Black Series figure of Leia’s mom Padme. Nextly I would like to discuss the
NY Comicon Exclusive Transformers:
Titans Return Arcee action figure.
We also like to collect the action figures & the statues of Hasbro’s female Transformers characters such as Arcee, Chromia, Elita One, Nautica, Blackarachnia, Strongarm and WindBlade, purrticularly the the versions from the comics & animated series. It is hard to believe that the Autobot heroine Arcee has been around for over 30 years, having first appurred in the 1986 animated Transformers: The Movie.
There have been various versions of her over the years, starting with the original Pink & White Autobot who transforms into a sports car. In the live-action movies she is briefly seen as a motorcycle, in Transformers Animated she’s Mauve & White, in Transformers Prime she’s Indigo Blue with large blades, In Beast Wars she has arthropodal features, and we saw a human version of her in a crossover with G.I. Joe.
This figure is one of the Titan Masters series, in which the bots transform into the heads of the colossal titan bots. In this NY Comicon exclusive edition from Hasbro, Arcee is still the Pink & White bot who transforms into the futuristic coupe, but she has a more massive angular Titan body with two blaster pistols, the interchangeable heads of smaller Leinad and Ultra Magnus, and two 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ collector’s cards.
In this incarnation of the characters, Arcee is a relentless, fierce warrior of great hand – to – hand combat prowess. Leinad is a medic who will boost the titan bot’s healing & repair capabilities, whereas Ultra Magus is the brave, smart leader who will boost the intellect. The cards & instruction sheet indicate that on a scale of 1 – 20, Arcee’s attributes are a strength of 7, intelligence of 8, speed of 5 & fireblast power of 7.
Leinad’s stats are 5, 10, 3 and 3, so when Arcee is combined with Leinad, the stats increase to 9, 13, 8 and 10. Ultra Magus’s stats are 5, 10, 3 and 3. Recommended for people aged 8+, the figure is quite splendidly designed, sculpted and painted. It is very well – balanced to stand unassisted either in humanoid bot or in the vehicle mode, and there are 18 steps to the transformation purrocess.
The 9 7/8″ x 7 1/8″ x 2 3/8″ Black & White box unfolds to reveal the toys, cards, instruction sheet and some beautiful illustrations. It is an impurressive package, but make sure to have a sharp knife, snips or scissors to carefully, patiently remove the items from the box’s inner plastic containers. I will give this toy an “A” as in Arcee That is all for the toy talk, and nyow here is Petra to purresent the latest

Amelia (on the front right with Orange hair) is the captain of the space ship R.L.S. Legacy in the movie, and her niece Aurora (on the rear left with Platinum Blonde hair) is a lieutenant on the R.L.S. Lyoness in the game, nya!
After that, are Mike’s mages of Yemaja the orisha goddess of water and Ayao the orisha goddess of air in the Yoruba religion, nya! They are among the heroes in Legacy of The Gods by Sharon Williams http://sailorsirius.webs.com, who was the November 2014 guest of The Mew, nya! Yemaja’s human teen girl avatar is Keisha, whist Ayao’s human teen girl avatar is Maybelle, nya! Mike used Photoshop CS2 and the mouse for the illustrations, nya. Purrhaps y’all have seen Mike’s pics of Maybelle, Keisha, Billie, Hazelynn, Erin, Hattie, Aja, Oshun, and Sharon’s other characters, nya?
