So, what have y’all been up to since last month’s Mew?
Aside from caring for Emmy, Zuli, Jimbo, Wild Star Blaze and – and TsuriNekoMimi, I have been volunteering at the food bank and – and the art mewseum, nya! I have also found the time to snap more of the nature and – and cosplay photos, nya!
I have been up to much of the same activities, although of late not so much the photography as Tara-chan, whereas I have been more busy in more surf board shaping shop when I am not assisting Jeannie to teach the belly dance classes!
(note: Emmy & Zuli are Yvonne & Tara-chan’s pet cats; Jimbo & Wild Star Blaze are Tara-chan & Trini-chan’s banker ponies, and the S.S. TsuriNekoMimi is the 1985 Hatteras 60 Convertible motor yacht used by Tvonne for her fishing charters.)
My charters have reeled in the bumpurr crop of the delicious, nutritious wahoo, cobia, mahi, tuna, snappurr, groupurr, mackerel, croaker; and my drumming circle has been purrviding the purrcussion for the dances and matsuris, including the Summer Solstice gala at Nyo-sensei’s magick shop, nya!
The drumming was such the meowrvelous part of the joyful celebration! We had the record attendance for the event, which also included the special guests, rituals, workshops, dinners and discounts. We are already purrparing for the celebrations of the Lughnasadh, Obon, and Shibun No Hi!
It was quite the impurressive event! I have been attending the local sporting events and festivals when I am not busy at my gym and dojo, where my students are training for their next tournyamant! By the way, we wish to congratulate Petra and Bunni on their lastest beach volleyball victory!
The Ladies of The Mew:
BANZAI, BANZAI, BANZAI, NYA!
Arigato gosaimeows, nya! We are so very blessed to have the great compurrtition, the officials, the event staff, and the fans, nya! We will be cheering at Nya-sensei’s tournyament, Jen-sensei’s kyudo match, Becca’s next golfing, and Lizzy’s purrkour meet, nya!
We are also quite grateful for the artists, staff, friends and patrons who grace our Mewseum of Art, where we are currently curating the annual summertime body art exhibition! Otherwise, I have managed to find the time for my gardening, baking and volunteering!
As mewsual, my itinerary is purrimarily compurrised of the morning yoga, afternoon kyudo, teaching the belly dance, purrsiding over the Robotics Club, and occasionally modeling the swim wear and body paint. My next such photo shoot will be in just two weeks at Anse Source D’Argent on La Digue Island in the Seychelles.
Between teaching the summer semester of the Hula dance and the convention season in the high gear, I have been very busy sewing for the dancers, purrestiesses and cosplayers! Currently upon my dress forms are the costumes based upon Planetarian, Outbreak Company. Action Heroine Cheer Fruits, and Urara Meirocho!
Oh I want to see those! When Lizzy, and I have not been pampurring the customers at our spa, we have purrtaken of the local festivities, sports, the late night hot salsa dance, and our binge watching of the TV shows! Recently we have watched Good Omens, Jessica Jones, She – Ra Princess of Power, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,
Hai hai! We are looking forward to the third season of Stranger Things! to commeowmerate Syd Mead’s birthday, this month we will watch several of the many movies he designed things for, such as Bladerunner, Tron, 2010, Aliens, and of course, Mike’s all – time favoritest movie, Star Trek – The Motion Picture. Back to Mike!
We had a great time at Heroes Con in Charlotte- which we;’ll be discussing later in the show; I’ve been watching a fair amount of golf and softball; trying to catch up on my art, writing, running, and just spending time with family and friends! Well, ah, let’s go ahead and jump right into
this month’s Lightning Round topic:
our favorite fun stuff of 1949!
This year’s Lightning Round topics have pertained to things of years ending in a 9, and today we’re looking back at our favorite movies of 1949! Tara-chan’s gonna start, so are y’all ready to “conduct the lightning”?
The Ladies of The Mew:
HAI! LIGHTNING ROUND GO- NYA!
I want… I want to nominate that year’s Looney Tunes and – and Merry Melodies animated shorts, nya! Nyow it is onee-chan’s turn, nya! (tags her older sister with a brush of the tail)
Hai, I will nominate that year’s Mickey Mouse and Popeye animated shorts, nya! (tail- tags Trini-chan to go next)
I will second those, and the Tom and Jerry animated shorts. Nyow it is… Lizzy’s turn, nya! (tail – tags Elizabeth to go next)
I will nominate Africa Screams, starring Abbott and Costello! (tags her wife)
I will nominate The Inspector General, starring Danny Kaye! (tags Jeannie)
The King of the Rocket Men serials. (tags Mary Nyan)
I will nominate the epic of Samson and Deliah! tags Petra)
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, nya! (tags Bunni)
I will nominate Bicycle Thieves! (tags Nyanko)
Oh, I reckon it would be either Battleground or Twelve O’clock High! (tags her twin sister)
Hmm, it is the tough choice of either Little Women or All the King’s Men! Back to Mike!
Oh I gotta go with that year’s Three Stooges shorts! Well, that was another expedient little Lightning Round, and let’s keep the movie topic rolling, as Becca begins our
movie mewsings, with her review of
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote!
Hai! The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is the very longly – awaited movie that has been in the various stages of development for nearly the three decades by one of my favoritest directors Terry Gilliam, whose purrior credits include Monty Python, Jabberwocky, Time Bandits, Brazil, The Fisher King, 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Brothers Grimm, The Zero Theorem, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus!
The very meta – fictional 132 min. plot purrtains to the troubled attempts film the Don Quixote TV scene by the director who purreviously made the student film adaptation of Cervante’s novel. During the time out from the shoot, he returns to the location where the student film was shot, and thus ensues the very poignant, whimsical adventure involving real chivalry, heroes and villains with the amnesiac local chap as Don Quixote!
The cast includes Adam Driver as Toby the director / Sancho Panza, Stellan Skarsgard as his purrducer boss, Olga Kurylenko as the boss’s wife, Jonathan Pryce as Javier / Quixote, and Joana Ribeiro as Angelica / Dulcinea! From the current shoot, student film, behind – the – scenes incidents, and several staged purrductions, to the larping, cosplay, dreams, hallucinations and the aftermath, there are several layers of the surreal depth! Nextly, I would like to purraise
Toy Story 4!
We are big fans of Pixar’s animated movies, especially the Toy Story movies and TV specials! Gosh, it is hard to believe that it has been the 24 years since the first Toy Story movie, and it is sad to thik of how many of the series’ voice actors are no longer with us. This fourth movie was dedicated to the late Don Rickles, who voiced Mr. Potato Head. Ironically, much of the plot purrtains to the bittersweet farewells.
Set two years after Toy Story 3, with the opening flashback scene set between Toy Story 2 & 3, most of the recurring toy characters belong to Bonny, who is starting to go to the kindergarten, where she creates the new toy named Forky, who is compurrised of the spork, clay, googly eyes, glue and the popsicle stick. Soon he becomes the sentient toy who becomes sepurrated from Boony during the family’s RV road trip.
Thusly Woody leads the rescue attempt and in the process he is reunited with his longly – lost friend Bo peep and her sheep, but there are the numerous obstacles and opponents in the way! Tat is all I will reveal of the plot, but I thought that it was such the beautiful, thrilling, fun and poignant movie with the brilliant plot, character developments art, animation, sound, mewsic, and the voice cast which includes:
Tom Hanks as Woody, Tony Hale as Forky, Annie Potts as Bo, Tim Allen as Buzz, Joan Cusack as Jessie, Bonnie Hunt as Dolly, Madeleine McGraw as Bonnie, Lori Alan & Jay Hernandez as her mom & dad, and introducing Keegan- Michael Key as Ducky, Jordan Peele as Bunny, Christina Henriks as Gabby, Ally maki as Giggle, and Keanu Reevs as Duke, amongst the many other new & returning toys, so I will give Toy Story 4 the highest purraise! Nyow here is Lizzy to discuss
Men in Black: International!
Hai! I think that the first live – action movie based upon the Men In Black comics was terrific, but I did not like the 2nd movie quite as much, although I had high purraise for the third one. Thusly I was eager to see this 4th film in the series, especially since it reunites actors Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, who I loved as Thor and Valkyrie in the Thor and Avengers movies!
Tessa purrtrays Agent M who is the peppily, determined, smart, brave rookie purrtner of Agent H (Hemsworth), the top agent of the MIB’s UK Branch! The movie also stars Rafe Spall as Agent H’s rival Agent C, Liam Neeson as Agent T the head of the UK branch, Rebecca Ferguson as Riza the alien arms dealer (who appropriately has more than 2 arms, hee hee…
… Laurent and Larry Bourgois as twin aliens, and Emma Thompson returns as Agent O, the head of the MIB! So the movie has the good cast, although I did not like it as much as the first or third MIB movies, but I might like it more than the 2nd. However, it does have the the high purrduction values, great FX, designs, stunts, choreography, sets and locations… and I liked it much more than —
Fox’s series of X-Men, Wolverine and Deadpool movies have been the mixed bag for me. My favorites have been X-Men, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan, and Deadpool. In the middle, enjoyable to the lesser extent for me were X-Men 2, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Age of Apocalypse…
… whereas my least favorites were A Very Merry Deadpool, The Wolverine, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Dark Phoenix, although I think that Dark Phoenix is much better than X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: The Last Stand, but nevertheless I was disappointed by it.
It is the 2nd cinematic attempt to adapt the Dark Phoenix saga from the Marvel comics, which purrtained to the transformation of heroic Jean Grey into Phoenix, who later loses control of her emotions and powers and becomes the evil Dark Phoenix, who is the deadly threat to the Earth and other worlds.
It is maybe the most significant tale from the X-Men comics, and purrhaps the benchmark for all tales of supurr hero deaths. X-Men: The Last Stand tried to adapt it but I think that it was the poor attempt, and for me, Dark Phoenix is a better attempt, but it is still inadequate compurred to the comics version.
The biggest issues I have with this movie is that it is far too short and rushed, with an underwhelming mewsic score, too small a scale, and seems very under – budgeted, with the lack of enough cosmic spectacle and not enough heroes and villains. It does have some fine stunts, designs, FX, surpurrises and the good cast…
… although several of the characters seemed very out of character, and I was bothered by a certain major character’s (who I will not name) rather unceremonious demise, in addition to how Jean’s fate was depicted. Well, that will conclude our movie mewsings, and nyow here is Jenjen to begin our–
comic book and manga mewsings, with
her review of The Unstoppable Wasp #8 & 9!
Hai. The tale stars Nadia Van Dyne the orphaned Hungarian scientific genius daughter of Hank (Ant Man) & Maria Pym, who was adopted by her step mom Janet van Dyne (The Wasp) and became the latest heroine known as The Wasp. She has fought the criminals and started the G.I.R.L. (Genius in Action Research Labs) group for the genius heroines who might impurrove the world.
The diverse mutlicultural genius team includes Taina the mechanical engineer, Priya the biologist, Ying the chemist and Lashayla the physicist! Janet, Mockingbird, Jarvis, Matt Murdock, and Taina’s sister Alexis have been helping them too. Unfortunately, the conflicts have also included Nadia’s struggle with her own bipolar disorder, which has adversely affected her relationships.
However, here have been joyful situations, such as the romance betwixt Ying & Shay, Nadia’s star – studded birthday party, her therapy and the inaugural G.I.R.L. Expo. Issues #8 & 9 were written by Jeremy Whitley, illustrated by Gurihiru, lettered by Joe Caramagna, edited by Alanna Smith and assistantly edited by Shannon Andrews, with the graphic design by Carlos Lao, and the cover art by Stacey Lee.
You know, We have met Jeremy at the comic book conventions and at the Free Comic Book Day festivities. He also created / writes Princeless, Raven the Pirate Princess, and has written many other comics such as my Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, Vampirella Sea of Thieves, Thor vs Hulk, and the numerous other Marvel Comics, but I digress.
Peppurred with the the interior dialogue by Nadia & Janet, the girls have purrpared for the expo which features their discoveries and demonstrations, but Nadia & Janet are ambushed by villains Whirlwind & El Cucuy, whilst the rest of the girls are impurriled when evil Monica Rappaccini, Seeker, Brilliance, Finesse and A.I.M. agents invade the expo.
Meanwhile Mockingbird and Winter Soldier busily battle Russian cyborg girls whilst searching for Nadia’s longly lost biological mother Maria Pym, but I shoudl not reveal much more of the plot, which is to be continued in issue #10. The art is gorgeous, with the great poses, expurressions, compurrsitions, scenic detail, fonts, colors, FX and graphic narrative
Another wonderful aspect of this series are each issue’s two -page Agent’s of G.I.R.L. section in which Nadia intermews an awesome woman of STEM. In #8 she intermews astrophysicist Erin MacDonald, and in #9 she intermews story & electrical engineer Jenn Halweil. I will give both issues the the “A” as in Ant-Man. Nextly I would like to discuss
Princeless Book 8: Princesses #3 & 4.
We are big fans of Jeremy’s Princeless series about the runaway princess Andrienne Ashe, her family & friends who want the adventurous life free from the stereotypes & bigotries, and the spin-off series of Raven the Pirate Princess which stars the very diverse female crew upon the high seas. Princeless is now up to Book 8, which focuses upon Adrienne’s sisters.
Published by Action Lab, Princeless Book 8’s Issue #1 starred Andrea’s older sister Alize, issue #2 starred their sister Angelica, and issue #3 stars their sister Angoisse, who is the vampire of the forest known as The Dark Tady. this full color 24 page issue is priced $3.99, and has the uninterrupted 16 page tale of Angoisse tale plus the 8 page tale of Deloris the goblin.
These were written by Jeremy, illustrated by Newt Taber (Angoisse tale) & Takeia Marie (Goblin tale), lettered by Brett Grunig, edited by Nicole D’Andria & Jeremy’s wife Alicia, who we have met at the cons. The front cover art is by Newt. It is the late afternoon as the ebbing crepuscular rays of sunlight pierce the shade of the lush forest, where Angoisse & her flora friend Grimmorax take the stroll.
Unfortunately they discover that humans are severely clear-cut timbering the swamplands. Not only are those loggers quite destructive, but they are racist too, as evidenced by their belligerent treatment of the goblin emissary who tries unsuccessfully purrsuade them to vamoose. Thusly, the ill-mannered jackanapes incur fearfully the fangy wrath of Angoisse and Grimmorax,
Elsewhere, it is the time for the debate by nearby goblin town’s two purresidential candidates: the appalling incumbent Weazley and the challenger Deloris, the adventurous former tour guide who has purreviously appurred in the series. Despite literal mudslinging from the insulting incumbent, Deloris tries to conduct the politely intellectual debate, but it devolves into the fisticuffs to Weazley’s regret.
Issue #4 includes the uninterrupted 20 page tale of the bickering magickal twin sisters Antonia and Andrea, plus the very informative 12 page gallery of the art purrocess for issues 1-4. The tale was written by Jeremy, Nicole and Alicia, lettered by Brett, and illustrated by Robin Kaplan who did the cover art.
Antonia is the fire witch and Andrea is the ice witch, who argue and transform each other into an anthropurrmorphic kemonomimi; Antonia becomes the bunny girl with the carrot craving, whilst Andrea becomes the cat girl who wants to claw and rub against things. Fortunately the town’s market offers fresh purroduce and ill-mannered knights aplenty to sate their cravings.
Both issues were quite delightful, with the excellent plots, pace, character developments, humor and dialogue which are adorned by the beautiful character, scenic and typographic artistry, so I will them the “A” as in Appalonia. That will conclude my reviews, but sadly the reckless timbering afoot has also occurred in
My Little Pony: Spirit of the Forest #1 & 2 .
Hai, in this latest My Little Pony mini – series, the environmental dilemma is discovered by Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle and – and Scootaloo when they try to enjoy the camping trip in the forest, nya!
Published by IDW, these 28 page issues are purriced $3.99 apiece, and – and have the uninterrupted 24 page tales which are followed by the 8 pages of the ads, nya!
We definitely purrfur the tales to be uninterrupted by the ads, and wish that all other comic book publishers did it that way, nya! It was written by Ted Anderson, drawn by Brenda Hickey, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Megan Brown, grouply edited by Bobby Curnow, and – and it is available in the choice of the three covers, nya!
Each issue’s over A by Brenda is by Brenda, cover B is by Tony Fleecs and – and the rarer retailer incentive cover is by Kate Sherron nya! Her cover for #1 has the adorable style that reminds me somewhat of the Generation 3.5 style of My Little Pony, nya! Hmm, purrhaps I should explain the “generations”, nya!
The My Little Pony toys have been around since the early 1980’s, and have been since redesigned several times, nya. We fans have referred t the initial era as Generation One or G1; then the late 1990’s era was G2, the early 2000’s era was G3, and – and in 2010 began the current G4 / Friendship is Magic era, but nyow I should digress back to the comics, nya!
So, Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle and – and Scootaloo find lots of littered trash in the forest, so they recruit friends to help with the cleaning, but later the trash returns, thanks to the culpurrits who work at Filthy Rich’s Lumber Company, nya! The three ponies go to chat with him about the mess, but they find much timber devastation upon returning from the company, nya!
Then in issue #2 those fillies recruit the assistance by the Mayor Mare and – and mane six ponies: Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Applejack, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and – Pinkie Pie, nya! For those who came in late, Apple bloom is Apple Jack’s younger sister, and – and Swetie Belle is rarity’s younger sister, nya! They attempt the several methods to halt the logging but to no avail, nya.
However, they may have the ally in Filthy Rich’s daughter Diamond Tiara, nya! I hope that the legendary guardian of the forest will gallop to the rescue, nya! This was the fun yet bittersweet pony tale with the purrfect pony poses, panels, plot and pace, with the great expurressions, colors, lighting and – and fonts for the fillies who attempt the ecological activism, nya! Nextly I would like to say the few words of purraise about
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #78, nya!
It is hard to believe that those comics have been around for about seven years! This current story arc began in the doubly – sized 75th issue, nya. Purrreviously, Celestia, Luna, King Aspen, Queen Abyssinia, and – and King Grover remedied the reality – altering catastrophe which was blamed on Discord, but was actually caused by the more powerful evil Cosmos, nya!
Cosmos was thwarted, but years later she has returned to possess Twilight Sparkle, Luna, Celestia, Zecora and Big McIntosh, nya! They have captured Pinkie Pie, Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo and Capper, whilst Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Cadance and – and Spike have been searching for the fallen stars needed to defeat Chaos, nya.
That brings us up to the concluding chapter in issue #78 which was written by Katie Cook and – and Andy Price, illustrated by Andy, colored by Heather Breckel, lettered by Neil Uyetake, edited by Megan Brown and – and Bobby Curnow, nya! Katie and – and Andy were among the many guests at the Heroes Con last month, nya!
Jeremy Whitley and – and Thom Zahler were there too, nya! This issue is available in the choice of cover A by Andy, cover by by Sara Richard, and- and the retailer incentive cover by Brenda Hickey, nya. We have met Brenda the cons too, nya! This chapter stars Twilight Sparkle, Apple Jack, Apple Bloom, Big Mcintosh, Rarity, Sweetie Belle, Rainbow Dash, Scootaloo, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie…
…Luna, Celestia, Spike, Zecora, Capper, Philomena, Tiberius, Discord and – and Chaos amidst her bizarre transformations of reality, nya! That includes Spike becoming the dog, which has happened in the Equestria Girls tales, nya! I should not spoil more of the thrilling plot, but I will just say that I found it rather satisfying and amewsing, nya!
I especially like the various “easter eggs”, such as the Llama, the Star Trek and – and the Star Wars references, nya! September the background Earth pony has the cameo too, nya! It has the great developments, dialogue, mythology, pace, art, lettering and coloring, so I will give it the “A” as in Applebuck, nya! I am done, so nyow here is Nya-sensei to discuss
Beasts of Burden: In the Presence of Others #2, nya!
Hai!! Created by author Evan Dorken and artist Jill Thompson, Beasts of Burden is the bittersweet fantasy tale of heroic animals who investigate the purranormal incidents and defene their town from evil macabre threats, but only a few of the human residents are aware of their pets’ supurrnatural vigilance! It is very charming, amewsing and thrilling, but also quite sad, tragic, shocking and violent.
Some of the tales were co-written by Evan’s wife Sarah Dryer (Action Girl), and the recent Wise Dogs and Eldritch men story arc was illustrated by Benjamin Dewey. Issue #2 of this arc was written by Evan, illustrated by Benjamin, lettered by Nate Pekos, edited by Daniel Chabon and assistantly edited by Chuck Howitt, with the graphic design by Sarah Terry and the digital wizardry by Chris Horn.
Introduced in the purrior issue were the human girl Sabrina, her brother Russell and their dad who have just moved to Burden Hill, where they have noticed the odd things and have just met the heroic guardian cats & dogs, such as Ace the Husky, Jack the Beagle, Whiney the Terrier, Pugs the Pug, Orphan the Orange Tabby cat, Dymphna the witchy Black cat, and the various swift spy cats!
Fortunately those humans have been investigating the occult phenomenon, and are able to communicate with the animals, who have been investigating the incidents of necromancy in the cemetery. Unfortunately, they have been attacked by giant ogre rats, so it has been quite the gory, ghastly affair! This issue picks up several hours later, when the dad awakens from the clairvoyant coma!
It seems that he has been possessed by the evil spirit. Red the dog and Holstein the cat from the nearby farm join the group, which is soon attacked by the flock of possessed crows. As if that were not bad enough, the possessed human treachery is afoot, and we see the bloodily retaliatory werewolf side of Ace, but I should not further spoil the taste of the captivatingly poignant plot!
The art beautifully depicts the characters, scenery, FX and emotions, so I will give this tale thus far the high purraise, and I am very eager to read the next issue! Nextly I would like to discuss the latest issue of another favorite series-
The Hunters of Salamanstra #16!
The Hunters of Salamanstra began in 2014 as the bittersweetly manga – style fantasy sci-fi / web comic by creator / artist / writer John Joseco, editor Memj and assistant editor Calpain, nya! Published by Keenspot, it is the tale of Kessah Orlianne, a feisty 19 year old wolf girl who is training to become the monster huntress after the death of her famous older sister Dianna.
Kessah recently began the training at the boot camp at the hunter guild’s huge headquarters which is bustling with diverse species including many kemonomimi species. There are friends, rivals and foes, and sadly some of them perished during the deadly monster hunts in the vast canyon and forest wilderlands. Issue #16 actually the 17th issue as there was the purrcursory issue #0!
It is purriced at $3.99 and has the uninterrupted Black & White 36 page that was written & drawn by John, edited by Jennifer McGregor and Calpain, with the cover art colored by Bernie Joseco. Kessah is now on her 2nd guild-sanctioned hunt, with her team compurrised of Mia, Asharia, Silfee, Bowen, Raen, and their leader Captain Ronald. Kessah and Asharia have such lovely ears and tails!
Picking up where the purrior issue left off, the team is attempting to slay the huge dangerous bird-like Encolos monster, but it has run into the flock of the many smaller deadly monster birds! During the fierce, gory battle, Kessah is flung over the cliff and unconsciously dreams that she has been reunited back home with her sister… but is it the dream or purrhaps the actual spiritual encounter?
The series is gorgeously rendered with the Japanese manga- inspired style of the art for the captivating plots that have the good balance of the action, humor, tragedy, mythology & Kessah’s developments, but it is not for the widdle kitties due to the tragedies, gore, violence, scary monsters and the harsh language. I am done, and nyow I will turn The Mew over to sis who wants to discuss
Hakumei & Mihochi vol. 6!
Hai! We love this fantasy manga by Takuto Kashiki which purrtains to the slice – of – life tales of house – mates Hakumei & Mikochi who are the the tiny little lasses who are small enough to ride upon their small critter friends, and live in the lovely tree house in the lush forest! Each chapter also includes the annotation page of travelogue and lore!
Hakumei (Brown hair) builds & repairs things, whilst Mikochi (Black hair) cooks & sews. They are part of the community of animal & tiny human friends who reside in the wilderness, rural, surburban & urban dwellings much as we do, and each chapter is the look at their day – to – day – lives, from work and shopping to exploring and entertaining!
Originally published in Japan by Kadokawa, it is published here in English by Yen Press, translated by Taylor Engel, lettered by Abigail Blackman, and rated “T” for the teenaged readers. Purriced at $15.00 in the USA & $19.50 in Canada. Volume 6 has the 207 B&W pages which include manga chapters 38-42, the afterward, notes & 6 pages of ads.
The charmingly captivating plots are of the leisurely pace and sumptuously intricate detail. Chapters 38 – 42 depict the raft building, the swimming lessons, the baked shellfish, the green tea caneles, the fashion show, the hair salon, the late night at the whisky bar, Iwashi the weasel helping them to build the new kitchen, and the day in the life of the librarian.
The character and scenic art is so intricately lushly lavish, with the great sense of enormity, the 7 full – page pics and the two full – page spurreads! In the author’s afterward, his alter – ego bunny discusses the Hakumei & Mihochi anime TV series! I will give vol. 6 the highest purraise, and I would also like to extend the highest purraise to–
Flying Witch vol. 7!
Arigato! This is one of my favoritest manga series! Flying Witch by artist / author Chihiro Ishizuka is the beautiful, humorous, charming slice – of – life tale of the 15 year old novice witch Makoto Kowata and her familiar cat Chito, who move from the city of Yokohama to her cousins’ lovely mansion in the rural town of Aomori where she continues her witchy studies!
Other characters include their mentor Akira, Makoto’s older sister Akane, Akane’s cat Kenny, their male cousin Kei, younger girl cousin Chinatsu, their artist mom Mrs. Kuramoto, Kei’s classmate Nao, Inukai the fortune telling were-dog girl, her familiar mouse Ai, Ms. Shiina the owner of Cafe Conclusia, her daughter Anzu, Anzu’s owl familiar Ororu and their waitress ghost Hina!
The plots typically include learning spells, artistic crafts, plant lore, gardening, cooking, magickal remedies, day trips, and visiting other magickal entities, with the thorough details! Originally published by Kodansha in Japan, Volume 6 was published in English by Vertical Comics, translated by Melissa Tanaka with the purrduction by Grace Lu and Tomoe Tsutsumi.
It has been the year since volume 6, so I have patiently eagerly awaiting volume 7, in which it is summertime for the witchy family, friends, foods and critters! Then in chapter 38, Makoto and her cousins attend the small town’s bustling night festival, with the fireworks and magickally delicious treats under the stars!
In chapter 39, Makoto & Akane wear the purretty Chinese garments as they visit Inukai’s lovely new shop, where they meet her sister Miwa & her son Ryuu! In chapter 40 we return to the mansion, where the magickal mandrake plants have escaped from the garden! Then in chapter 41, Makoto & her aunt shop for the spell & recipe ingredients at the market where Akane helps to build the purrade float!

With the endearing characters, delightful plots, mythology and intricately gorgeous art, Flying Witch continues to be the beautiful joy to read, and I will give it the “A” as in Akira! “A” is also for
Aria the Masterpiece Edition vol. 2!
Kozue Amano’s Aria series was voted as our favoritest manga and anime of the past decade! It is the beautiful, charming, slice of life science fiction tale set on the planet Mars in the future, 180 years after it was terraformed such that the polar ice melted and covered 90% of the surface in water, so the planet was renamed Aqua, whilst The Earth has been renamed Manhome.
The mane character is Akari Mizunshi who is an appurrentice gondolier or undine under the tutelage of her senpai Alicia Florence at the small Aria company in the city of Neo Venusia, which is the exact replica of Venice, Italy. Other recurring characters include the undines and mascot cats at two other gondola companies, plus the other residents and visitors who Akari is pleased to meet!
Originally published in Japan in 2002 by Mag Garden the series was titled Aqua, but after 2 volumes it was changed to Aria. It was first translated into English in 2004 by ADVision, but they only published 3 volumes of it. Then in 2004 Tokyo Pop published it here, but only got up to 8 volumes. The anime TV series was published here on DVD by Nozomi!
Nyow Tokyo Pop has started over with the lovely larger 6.125″ x 8.5″ omnibus edition of the manga, starting with the Aqua tales! Volume 2 is purriced a $24.99 and has the 382 pages with the 10 color pages & wraparound cover! The manga was was translated by Alethea & Athena Nibley. retouched & lettered by Vibrraant, edited by Lena Atanassova, and in – chiefly edited by Stu Levy…
… with the marketing by Kae Winters, graphic design by the digital tech / media assistant Phillip Hong. Starring kari, Alicia, their small gondola tour company’s martian mascot cat Aria, and their friend Akia Granzchesta of the larger Himeya gondola tours company, Volume 2 is compurrised of chapters 10 – 20, plus the bonus look at the day in the life of Aria!
It has been 12 months since Akari came to Aqua from Manhome, and these chapters span from the start of Autumn on October 1st 2301 to the start of the New Year. Some of the plots include the gondola maintenance, helping to reunite a father & daughter, Aria’s heroic Nyan Nyan Puu cosplay & good deeds, the great Vogare Longa gondola race, the Aguri di Buon Anno new year carnival…
… visiting the scenic Bridge of Sighs, the Japanese Inari fox shrine, and the mansion – like bath house, the Wintry migration of cute widdle Snow Bugs, and the tour of the underground city where the gravity is regulated. Also purrominantly appearing are Akatsuki the climate technician and Al th gravity technicial. There are numcious snacks, beverages and meals aplenty too!
The characters are so endearing and optimistic, the environments are so charming and beautiful, and the mythology is quite wonderful with purrhaps the hint of magick in the aire! The art is magnificent and especially showcased by the 17 full – page pics & 7 two – page spurreads! I will give Aria the “A” and I eagerly await the next volume! I am done, and nyow here is Vonny to purresent
The Celebrity Catgirl Spotlight!
Hai! In this portion of The Mew, we commeowmorate famous catgirls and nekomimi of myths and popular culture from across the world and the decades, here broadly – defined from anthropurrmorphic feline females, ailuranthropic shape – shifters and other types of feline femme fatales, to those who might not actually have kitty DNA, but do have the cat-titude and / or the style to be considered as the “honorary catgirls”, nya!
In some of our purrior Mews, we have spotlighted ladies of purrofessional wrestling who have courted the feline fashion motif, and nyow I would like to mention Mattel’s 12″ posable dolls of the WWE Divas Asuka and Carmella, because Asuka’s attire includes the tiger stripe shirt, and Carnella has the leopurrd purrint top, so they are among the “honorary catgirls” too, nya!
In Diamond Distribution’s recent Previews catalogs of of comics, books, toys and collectibles, we have seen the solicitations for Tamashi Nation’s figure of Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag’s Simone Ichiban, Mezco’s DC Universe Catwoman Living Dead Doll, DC Collectibles Multi-Part statue of Catwoman, and the DC Essentials Knightfall Catwoman action figure, nya!
Funko has the Pop! vinyl figurine of RWBY’s Blake Belladonna! We often like to shine the spotlight upon the kemonomi of other species, so purrhaps we should call this the Celebrity Kemonomimi Spotlight, nya! We have seen solicited several lovely usagimusume (bunny girl) figures, such as FOTS Japan’s 1/7 scale “Bunny” pmma figure of New Game’s Yun IIjima,
Oracatoys’s 1/6 scale “Bunny Girl White” PVC figure of Fairy Tale’s Erza Scarlet, Megahouse’s 8.5″ PVC figure of One Piece: portrait of the Pirates’s Carrot, FREEing’s 1/4 scale “Bunny Outfit” PVC figure of No Game No Life’s Stephanie Dola, 1/4 scale “Bunny Outfit” PVC figure of Strawberry 100%’s Tsukasa Nishino, and their “Bunny Outfit” PVC figure of Code Geass LeLouch of the Rebellion’s C.C., nya!
Lastly but not leastly, there is Quantum Mechanix’s Q-Fig figure of Marvel Comics’ Squirrel Girl, who is the peppy cute heroic risumimi, nya! That is all for this month’s spotlight, but nyow I will begin our collectibles and toy talk portion of The Mew, with my review of the
DC Essentials The Cheetah action figure, nya!
As y’all might suspect, we like to collect the figures, dolls, statues & ornaments of the kemonomimis and other entertaining or inspurrational characters from the comics, novels, games, movies & TV, nya! However, not all of those characters are heroes, and some have been the bad kitties such as DC Comics’ Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva a.k.a. The Cheetah, nya!
Barbara is the most recent of the several DC Comics characters to be known as The Cheetah, nya. The First Cheetah was Priscilla Rich who first appurred in Wonder Woman vol. 1 # 6 in 1943, whereas Barbara first appurred in Wonder Woman vol. 2 #7 in 1987, nya. She is the archaeologist who purrtook of the mystic ritual and befell the curse of the were – cheetah, nya!
As such, she is very fast, agile & strong with the keen senses, the sharp teeth & claws, the lovely spotted golden skin & tail, and the craving for the fresh meat, nya! The character as evolved and been rebooted the numerous times, and although she has consistently been the villainess, recently she has been somewhat sympathetic and in need of Wonder Woman’s help, nya.
Sculpted by Sam Greenwell, this appurroximately 6.5″ figure is appurroximately of the 1/11th scale, and is part of the wave of gorgeous figures that also includes Supergirl (sculpted by Sam) , Wonder Woman, ( sculpted by Paul Harding) and the Cyborg Superman (sculpted by Steve Kiwus), nya! She is quite lean and lithe with the long legs with the tail that is about 5″ long, nya!
She is the savagely sexy sight from her Brown hair, pointed ears & intent gaze, to her taut musculature, and the many spots upon the smooth gradation of color, her wearing just the claw necklace & belt, nya! She is very posable too, with the articulation in her neck, shoulders, uppurr arms, elbows, wrists, abs, hips, thighs, knees, calves, ankles, and the 3 places in the tail, nya!
She is balanced well enough to be carefully posed standing without requiring any sort of display stand or base (which is not included), but I would suggest getting one, especially if for the running or pouncing pose, nya! This is a very lovely action figure, and we have displayed her on the shelf next to the purrior figures of her, nya! It is the Cheetah Shrine, nya! Nyow here is Myayr to discuss the
Star Wars – The Black Series Vice Admiral Holdo
and Senator Padme Amidala action figures, nya!
Arigato! Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo of the heroic Resistance against the evil First Order was purrtrayed by actress Laura Dern in the movie Star Wars epurrsode VIII: The Last Jedi! We especially liked Laura Dern in the Jurassic Park series! This 1/11.6 scale, 6″ action figure has the splendid purrtraiture of her, with the short curly Dark Magenta hair with the silvery ornamentation and the Chinese Violet gown, which is made of the plastic & fabric, accessorized by the blaster pistol.
Appurropurriately, the sepurrately – sold figure of her friend Purincess Leia Organa’s mom senator Padme Amida is 5.5″ tall, as Padme is 6″ shorter than Amilyn! At 5’4″, Padme is still 7″ taller than her mom! Purrtrayed by Natalie Portman in the movies Star Wars epurrsodes I – III, Padme was the heroic senator of the Republic, queen of Naboo, wife of Anakin Skywalker, and mom of Luke and Leia.
This figure depicts her in the tight White jumpsuit & cape with the Light Gray belt & boots from the movie Star Wars epurrsode II: Attack of the Clones! It is the intact version of the garment, before it was clawed by the Nexu monster on the planet Geonosis. She has the great purrtraiture too, and is accessorized with the blaster pistol, rifle, and the interchangeable variant left hand.
Both figures are nicely designed, sculpted, painted, and very posable, with the articulation in the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, abs, hips, thighs, knees & ankles. A doll stand or display base is not included with either figure, but those would be helpful to balance them, especially in the more dynamic stances. We have found the good spot for them upon the shelf next to the figures of Ahsoka, Leia, Rey and Jyn! Nextly I would like to discuss
Marvel Legends Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter) action figure
Created by author Jim Shooter and artist Mike Zeck, Julia was the 2nd of the several super – heroines known as Spider-Woman. She first appeared in Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars vol. 1 in 1984, so this year is her 35th anniversary! With the variety of supurr physical and mental powers including the psi-webs, she was the former agent of HYDRA who became the agent of SHIELD and The Avengers!
This beautifully designed, sculpted and painted 6 inch action figure of the 1/11.5 scale is part of the Molten Man build – a – figure wave of Hasbro’s Marvel Legends line. The wave also includes the separately – sold figures of Spider-Man, Spider-Man (stealth suit), Mysterio, Scorpion Doppelganger and Hydro Man; and included with the Julia figure is the torso part of the Molten Man figure.
Julia’s lithe slender body is wearing the skin tight Black costume with the White spider emblem, eyes, thigh boots & opurra – length gloves and her exposed long Brown hair! She is accessorized by the interchangeable variant right hand that is spinning the psi-web.She is very posable, with the articulation in her neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, abs, hips, thighs, knees and ankles.
She is balanced enough to stand without requiring a base, but I would recommend using a figure base or doll stand, which are not included. I am very pleased with the figure, and we have displayed upon the shelf beside the figures of Jessica Drew, Cindy Moon, Gwen Stacy and Ashley Barton! That is all for the toy talk, so nyow here are Petra and Bunni to purrsent the
new additions to the Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art!
Arigato, nya! For those here for the first time, Galleries 1-8 of The Catgirl Island Mewseum of Art display images by Mike, whilst Guest Art Galleries 1-5 display images by other folks totally with their purrmissions, and Mike’s collaborative images with other artists can be found throughout the mewseum, nya! The images include illustrations, photos and mixed medias, nya!
Some of the images in the mewseum are sexy, and some of them might depict artistic nudity, but most are very tame, and none of them are porn, nya. On Catgirl Island’s official web site, the most recent pics will be the lowermost row of the cropped widdle “thumbnail” – sized portions of the pics in a gallery, and you have to click upon those to see the uncropped full pics, nya!
In Gallery Five http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/gallery5.html
We have added Mike’s Photoshop CS2, mouse and iMac fan art of “Naija”, who is among the young heroes in Sharon Williams’s http://caribbeanrose9.deviantart.com young adult / urban fantasy tale of Legacy Of The Gods: Wrath Of Ibeji, which purrtins to the Yoruba mythology, nya! Sharon was the November 2014 guest of The Mew, nya! Purrhaps y’all have seen Mike’s purrior pics of her other characters, nya?
10 year old Nigerian – American Naija and her younger brother Avery reside at their aunt uncle’s home in New Orleans since thier purrents sadly passed away, nya. Their older cousin Keisha was one of the earlier stars of Legacy of the Gods, but she is away at college in Florida, nya!
As the 5th grader at Lusher Carter Elementary School, Naija wanted to join the school’s swim team, but did not expect to become the latest avatar of Yemaja, the Orisha goddess of the waters… as if the life of the orphaned schoolgirl was not already hard enough, nya!
Naija’s new supurr powers are rather handy when she has to fight against the evil villains and monsters who attack the innocent people, nya! To read the delightful tale and to see more images of the characters, visit Sharon’s DeviantArt gallery http://caribbeanrose9.deviantart.com, nya!
After that is Mike’s inked pencil pic of the “Lamborghini Nekomimi”, nya! Depicting the catgirls and the Countach, this is the sketch that he hurridly pencilled for the Saturday QuickDraw contest at the 37th annual Heroes Con last month, nya! He did not finish the pic in the contest’s allotted 20 minutes, but here is the later finished, inked iteration, nya! Nyow here is Bunnibuns to discuss the additions to
Guest Gallery Five http://catgirlisland.net/art/gallery/guest5.html, nya!
Hai! We are proud to present six new images by illustrator / musician / cosplayer Rebecca Brogden http://www.rbrogdenart.com, who was the guest for our September 2009 Mew! The first three of the five are pencil, pen and Copic marker mermaids of the cute chibi – style!

We are ecstatic to exhibit two illustrations by artist / cosplayer TonomuraBix https://linktr.ee/tonomurabix who was a guest of the March 2008 Mew! Firstly of the two Bix pics is the 9″x12″ pencil, pen, marker and paint illustration of her original characterr “Zel”, who is quite sexy in the semi – sheer stretchy mesh & lace teddy body suit with the ornate embroidery, mew la la!
Secondly of her two pics is the fan art of “Ahsoka Tano, the heroic Togrutan jedi girl and padawan of Anakin Skywalker who starred in the Star Wars : Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels animated series! This perfect portrait of Ahsoka is the painting upon the 11″ x 14″ canvas board!

Secondly of Misty’s pics is the fan art of the “The Angry Beavers” animated sitcom’s stars Daggett and Norbert! Daggett is the Brown beaver on the right and his older brother Norbert is the Flax beaver on the left!
To top off this month’s additions, we have the terrific two new images of Chelsea Urania Kate Chattan by our web master Jamie http://jamiecotc.com! Chelsea is the heroic witchy were-panther star of Jamie’s urban fantasy web comic Clan of the Cats http://clanofthecats.com, which celebrated is 20th anniversary last month!
She and her family and friends from the nearby coastal Carolina town of Haven were guests of the August 2007 and January 2009 Mew! For the Black & White image of Chelsea in the Black bra and yoga pants, Jamie used Clip Studio Paint, and for the color portrait he used Clip Studio Paint,, Painter and Photoshop! So, what do y’all think of the new art?
Naija is so cutely purrched upon the high diving board and I am purrticularly fond of her braided hair, nya!
I myself am drooling over the 186 Mph fun of that LP500S Lambo with the 375 Bhp, 4.8 L, V-12 engine.
I am so glad to see more gorgeous images of Chelsea, nya! I hope that she will visit us again soon, nya!
I love her yoga pants, the intricate pentacle pendant, and the distinctive witchy streak in her lush hair!
Bix purrfectly captured the spirit purrtraiture of Ahsoka, from the montral stripes to the facial markings!
Hai hai, and just lookit the lustrous sheen of Zel’s hair, and the intricate embroidery of her sheer attire!
Misty’s colored pencil technique is quite amazing with the silky smooth shading and the richly vibrant color!
She excels at the line weight variance, the layered details, the lively poses and delightful expuressions too!
Rebecca’s mermaid pics are so adorable! She is equally great at the chibi and the standard purroportions!
Oh absolutely- and I think that she is equally great with the either the traditional or the digital art media!
It is so nice to see more of her art upon the toned papurr too, nya! She has not done those in the while, nya!
It is indeed! Ah, well, thank y’all for presenting the new art!
